With a love of robbing banks and the love of a good woman, Forrest Tucker pulled off heists with no violence involved. Plenty of arrests ensued, but so did plenty of prison escapes. He was a man with a life so extraordinary, Robert Redford played him in a movie...that put Zaron to sleep. See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

[0:00] Speaker 1: Ridiculous Crime is a production of iHeartRadio Zeron.
[0:04] Speaker 2: No, Yes, listen, listen to her.
[0:06] Speaker 3: Sorry I was napping, Go ahead, you know it's ridiculous.
[0:08] Speaker 3: Oh thank god, I had a dream about it. I
[0:09] Speaker 3: want to tell you about it. Scientists, they got jokes, right, yeah,
[0:13] Speaker 3: I mean, like, did you know there's a spider called
[0:15] Speaker 3: dracu Loitus bram Stokery. Yeah, there's a name after anyway.
[0:20] Speaker 3: There's also Roland Skiata mile Planna, obviously named for Henry Rowlins,
[0:26] Speaker 3: what famed front man of Black Flag and Rowlins man
[0:29] Speaker 3: veritable hardcore punk legend. He has a fireworm named after him.
[0:33] Speaker 2: A fireworm fireworm told you Henry Roland story?
[0:36] Speaker 3: No, it was it short?
[0:37] Speaker 2: Yeah, I just I ran into him at a shoe store.
[0:39] Speaker 2: I patted him on top of the head because he's
[0:41] Speaker 2: a little short.
[0:42] Speaker 3: You love doing that to short celebrities.
[0:44] Speaker 2: The only one I've done it too.
[0:46] Speaker 3: Wait a minute, I thought you also did the iced
[0:49] Speaker 3: tea was short. Yeah.
[0:50] Speaker 2: I didn't point it out to him.
[0:53] Speaker 3: On the head, like, really, you really pad him?
[0:55] Speaker 2: Look at you? And then I was not a nice
[1:02] Speaker 2: person back in the day.
[1:04] Speaker 3: I hope you never run to a Glenn Danzig you
[1:05] Speaker 3: might break his heart. Now I got one more for you, Elizabeth.
[1:10] Speaker 3: I found dickro tentipees thanogratis. Okay, all right now, dicro
[1:17] Speaker 3: Tendippy's gratis. Maybe saying that wrong. In Greek, thanatosis, you know,
[1:23] Speaker 3: is the word for the state of death, okay, And
[1:26] Speaker 3: gratusis is basically the Latin for grateful, which means there
[1:29] Speaker 3: is a mixed Latin and Greek blood worm with a
[1:32] Speaker 3: name that literally means the grateful dead.
[1:34] Speaker 2: Yes, so we got a blood worm and a fire.
[1:38] Speaker 2: Big apologies to Henry Rollins, by the way, big fan.
[1:42] Speaker 2: I wasn't in my right mind.
[1:44] Speaker 3: You know all that was ridiculous.
[1:45] Speaker 2: It was so ridiculous. I love that those are cute.
[1:49] Speaker 2: Do you know what else is ridiculous?
[1:50] Speaker 3: No, That's why I came here.
[1:52] Speaker 2: Never stop escapings eron, never got it. This is ridiculous Crime,
[2:16] Speaker 2: A podcast about absurd and outrageous caper's heis and cons.
[2:21] Speaker 2: It's always ninety nine percent murder free and one hundred
[2:24] Speaker 2: percent ridiculous.
[2:26] Speaker 3: Damn right.
[2:27] Speaker 2: You and I have similar tastes in lots of things.
[2:29] Speaker 3: You and I t why.
[2:32] Speaker 2: I even want to sing the rest You're about to
[2:34] Speaker 2: kick me off and do it. Okay, but that's funn
[2:36] Speaker 2: you should say that music especially, Yeah, and like you know,
[2:39] Speaker 2: we like pretty much every genre. Yes, we have a
[2:42] Speaker 2: lot of similar artists that we like.
[2:44] Speaker 3: A lot of overlap, and.
[2:45] Speaker 2: There's some overlap in TV and movies. Yes, but you
[2:49] Speaker 2: and I like different storytelling.
[2:50] Speaker 3: Styles, very different stories.
[2:52] Speaker 2: You like action and structure. I like quiet things and absurdity.
[2:56] Speaker 3: It may not have an end.
[2:57] Speaker 2: Yeah, here's some examples. Like we both like. I can say, like, oh, brother,
[3:01] Speaker 2: we're art that. Yeah, I love that. And we both
[3:05] Speaker 2: like the funny hammer Guy movies. For movies, movies, here's
[3:09] Speaker 2: where we part ways. One of my favorite movies is
[3:12] Speaker 2: The Last Black Man in San Francisco. Yes, I think
[3:15] Speaker 2: it's one of the most beautiful movies I've seen, Like
[3:17] Speaker 2: shot for.
[3:18] Speaker 3: Shot, totally a lot of beautiful scene.
[3:20] Speaker 2: Shot could be a piece of art. I enjoyed the story.
[3:23] Speaker 3: There's a sord like that.
[3:24] Speaker 2: I enjoy the energy of it, the ceiling.
[3:27] Speaker 3: I do, the aesthetic, the love. I liked the end.
[3:30] Speaker 3: There was an ending. You call that an ending?
[3:32] Speaker 2: You had feelings about this movie?
[3:34] Speaker 3: There was no ending. The movie just like basically just
[3:37] Speaker 3: ran out of film and then they turned the lights on,
[3:39] Speaker 3: you're supposed to walk out of the theater and like,
[3:40] Speaker 3: could you please take some popcorn with you?
[3:42] Speaker 2: I live for uncertainty, like I live in the gray areas.
[3:47] Speaker 3: Sure, in the middle of a movie.
[3:49] Speaker 2: I like contradiction, we contain multitudes.
[3:52] Speaker 3: I'm with you, but like it didn't feel like a
[3:54] Speaker 3: movie that had anything to say because it didn't have
[3:57] Speaker 3: an ending. The ending kind of would have been like
[3:59] Speaker 3: the period of like, oh, okay, this is what I
[4:00] Speaker 3: had to say, instead of just like I could keep
[4:02] Speaker 3: going you want yea. I understand that, you know, any
[4:05] Speaker 3: story could have any beginning. It's where you drop the needle.
[4:08] Speaker 3: I totally get that, but there is a point about
[4:10] Speaker 3: when you pick the needle back up. You can't just
[4:12] Speaker 3: be like, oh, we got to the It's just the
[4:13] Speaker 3: paper in the center of the record.
[4:15] Speaker 2: So I guess that's cool with that. You were not.
[4:17] Speaker 3: No, I did not like that's the record going.
[4:23] Speaker 2: Another film that we didn't agree on was the Robert
[4:26] Speaker 2: Redford movie The Old Man and the Gun. Yes, it's
[4:29] Speaker 2: got an all star lineup, got Robert Redford, Casey Affleck,
[4:33] Speaker 2: Danny Glover who was also in Last Black Man, Tom Waite,
[4:36] Speaker 2: Sissy space. We saw this movie.
[4:38] Speaker 3: Together, that's true.
[4:39] Speaker 2: You maybe you fell asleep.
[4:41] Speaker 3: Yes, you may see it.
[4:42] Speaker 2: As we were walking out, I said, I liked how
[4:45] Speaker 2: quiet and gentle the movie was, and meeting like the
[4:48] Speaker 2: pace and the visuals and everything. And you said, that's
[4:50] Speaker 2: one way to put it.
[4:51] Speaker 3: That's what I said.
[4:53] Speaker 2: I'm so Redford retired after making that movie.
[4:58] Speaker 3: I can see why what I'm self sleep. He's like,
[5:01] Speaker 3: I can't do this anymore.
[5:02] Speaker 2: Do you remember the plot of the movie.
[5:04] Speaker 3: What's again? I asked? Was there a plot? I remember?
[5:06] Speaker 3: There was an old it's about it.
[5:09] Speaker 2: It's about a career bank robber who's like in his seventies,
[5:12] Speaker 2: escapes from prison, picks up a foxy, age appropriate total lady,
[5:17] Speaker 2: and begins a romance while sticking up banks.
[5:19] Speaker 3: That was fun. The beginning of the Miss Sun dappled
[5:22] Speaker 3: and warm. Great.
[5:23] Speaker 2: Yes, you're going to hate the movie so much more
[5:26] Speaker 2: ended when I tell you what I'm going to tell
[5:29] Speaker 2: you today, Okay, because the movie is supposed to be
[5:32] Speaker 2: about a real life robber guy Forrest Woody Tucker. Yeah,
[5:36] Speaker 2: And as I'm reading about him, I'm reading about his
[5:39] Speaker 2: life and his whole story. I'm just blown away really
[5:43] Speaker 2: the great, and I keep thinking, like, at this point,
[5:45] Speaker 2: I haven't gone to the point in researching him where
[5:48] Speaker 2: I know that the movie's about him, and I'm thinking, like,
[5:51] Speaker 2: why haven't they made a movie about this? He's amazing,
[5:55] Speaker 2: his life is incredible. And then I find out that
[5:58] Speaker 2: The Old Man and the Gun was that movie, and
[6:00] Speaker 2: I liked the movie a lot less see thank you
[6:04] Speaker 2: one big missed opportunity. There you go, And it wasn't
[6:07] Speaker 2: the movie for Forrest Tucker and Jonathan Major's has tainted
[6:11] Speaker 2: my love for the Last Black Man in San Francisco.
[6:14] Speaker 2: So my favorites are all evaporating. Yeah, look at you,
[6:17] Speaker 2: but don't tell me anything about the Paris Dispatch or
[6:19] Speaker 2: Talladagan Knites.
[6:23] Speaker 3: I think you're gonna be good there.
[6:24] Speaker 2: I hope. So so let's talk about mister.
[6:26] Speaker 3: Tucker, please, And I'd love to hear this dude story.
[6:29] Speaker 2: Apparently casting Robert Redford, you know, Hoba Hoba, by the way,
[6:33] Speaker 2: even you know, for him as he aged year.
[6:35] Speaker 3: Old, eight year old, you still still got you climb
[6:38] Speaker 3: that tree.
[6:38] Speaker 2: Yeah, it wasn't too far off the casting because like
[6:43] Speaker 2: Tucker apparently had these really gorgeous blue eyes, but he
[6:46] Speaker 2: was no Redford.
[6:47] Speaker 3: Okay, Tucker, No.
[6:51] Speaker 2: He was what Bruce brings. You say, you're not a looker,
[6:54] Speaker 2: but yeah, you're.
[6:55] Speaker 3: All right, Okay, that is the boss.
[6:57] Speaker 2: Okay, so let's talk. Let's uh anyway. He's born nineteen
[7:01] Speaker 2: twenty in Miami, Florida, which what a time in Miami,
[7:04] Speaker 2: totally right, It's all possibility and development at that point,
[7:08] Speaker 2: Art deco everything. His dad was a heavy equipment.
[7:12] Speaker 3: Operator, so he was building Miami.
[7:14] Speaker 2: Yeah, but he dipped out on the family when Forrest
[7:17] Speaker 2: was six and his mom was barely making ends meet.
[7:21] Speaker 2: So Forrest gets sent to live with his grandma and
[7:24] Speaker 2: Stuart Florida, and he loved it there. There's like no
[7:28] Speaker 2: no dad to boss around. Granny lets him just kind
[7:30] Speaker 2: of like find himself and do his own thing. He
[7:33] Speaker 2: hung out at the river and built little boats from
[7:36] Speaker 2: scrap wood and metal that he found.
[7:38] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah.
[7:39] Speaker 2: And then he taught himself how to play the saxophone
[7:41] Speaker 2: and the clarinet.
[7:42] Speaker 3: Damn, just by ear.
[7:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's amazing, Like right, that's enough, right.
[7:47] Speaker 3: Cool playing along with records of something.
[7:49] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think so. And so you know that's his
[7:51] Speaker 2: childhood and Stuart, a little boy's dream idyllic children become
[7:56] Speaker 2: teens and that's when things can go sideways. Yes, and
[7:59] Speaker 2: it did for Tucker. So, you know, he didn't have
[8:01] Speaker 2: a strong father figure, and I think, like, you know,
[8:04] Speaker 2: a lot of men are successful without a strong father figure.
[8:07] Speaker 2: I'm not necessary, but I think he kind of needed it,
[8:10] Speaker 2: just by his necessary.
[8:12] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[8:12] Speaker 2: So when he was fifteen, he got caught stealing a
[8:15] Speaker 2: car and he gets cuffed and stuffed, take him to
[8:18] Speaker 2: the police station. He told the cops that he just
[8:21] Speaker 2: wanted to go on a joy ride, just as simple
[8:23] Speaker 2: as that. He's like, no, big, it's not a big deal.
[8:25] Speaker 2: Calm down. So the jailer takes the chains off and
[8:29] Speaker 2: like to process him, and he slips out. He escapes.
[8:32] Speaker 2: First arrest, first escape.
[8:34] Speaker 3: Nice, and there's like one for one.
[8:36] Speaker 2: One for one. There's like a half hearted man hunt
[8:38] Speaker 2: for him. Like a week or so later, a deputy's
[8:40] Speaker 2: cruising down the road and sees him sitting in an
[8:42] Speaker 2: orange grove eating an orange, just you know, as you do.
[8:46] Speaker 2: It's Florida fun. Yeah, please, So he gets busted an orange.
[8:52] Speaker 2: The sheriff sends him to reform school, basically like Juvie.
[8:56] Speaker 2: Here's the thing, though, when he was free. Between his
[9:00] Speaker 2: initial arrest and the capture of the Orange Grove, he
[9:03] Speaker 2: wasn't just like mowing down on oranges the whole time,
[9:05] Speaker 2: avoiding scurvy. He's working on future plans.
[9:08] Speaker 3: What were the future plans, Elizabeth?
[9:10] Speaker 2: Well, he was a rascal boy, and he knew other rascals,
[9:13] Speaker 2: and he knew that they'd been sent to reform school,
[9:16] Speaker 2: and he knew the cops would eventually catch him and
[9:18] Speaker 2: that he'd join his pals. So before he was caught,
[9:22] Speaker 2: he went over to the reform school and slipped like
[9:25] Speaker 2: six hacksaw blades through a cell window to a group
[9:28] Speaker 2: of boys inside.
[9:29] Speaker 3: Already in there. Yeah, he was like, I'm coming in, boys.
[9:32] Speaker 2: He gets thrown in with them, and they still had
[9:34] Speaker 2: the blade because they hadn't tried to escape yet. They're like,
[9:36] Speaker 2: we don't know how to use it, right, So he
[9:39] Speaker 2: changes all that. He cuts through the bars on the
[9:42] Speaker 2: window and he helps two other boys squeeze through. He
[9:45] Speaker 2: wasn't out long though. The cops found him and another
[9:48] Speaker 2: kid like they had jumped into the river and were
[9:51] Speaker 2: like up to right below their noses, so just the
[9:55] Speaker 2: tops of their heads sticking out, like trying to hide,
[9:57] Speaker 2: but not drown in the water of the river.
[10:00] Speaker 3: Well better than mud.
[10:02] Speaker 2: It's like very Viet con and so they're just likely
[10:07] Speaker 2: now pull them out. So the Stewart Daily News reported
[10:11] Speaker 2: the next day, quote trio escape by sawing bars of
[10:14] Speaker 2: cell last night, supplied with hack saws, cold chisels, and
[10:17] Speaker 2: files by boy. So he kept catching little petty crime charges,
[10:23] Speaker 2: and he winds up back in reform school, and of
[10:25] Speaker 2: course he escaped from reform school, ran away to Georgia
[10:29] Speaker 2: as you do go north. He got caught again and
[10:32] Speaker 2: he gets sentenced to quote be placed and confined at
[10:35] Speaker 2: labor in the chain game.
[10:37] Speaker 3: Ooh, he got tried as an adult.
[10:40] Speaker 2: So the authorities they had a blacksmith rivet the cuff
[10:43] Speaker 2: and chain to his ankles. And then this is how
[10:46] Speaker 2: he described it. Quote the guards would give you the
[10:48] Speaker 2: first three days to let you get your hands broken
[10:51] Speaker 2: in with calluses, but after that the walking boss would
[10:54] Speaker 2: punish you, hit you with his cane or fist, and
[10:56] Speaker 2: if you didn't work hard enough, the guards would take
[10:58] Speaker 2: you into the bathroom and tie your hands behind your
[11:00] Speaker 2: back and put a pressure hose in your face and
[11:03] Speaker 2: hold it there until you'd sputter. And couldn't breathe. They waterboarded,
[11:06] Speaker 2: so torture, they tortured it. It's the depression totally. They're torturing,
[11:10] Speaker 2: like disesting, so depraved.
[11:13] Speaker 3: So they're out there like making basically making all those
[11:15] Speaker 3: Southern roads, yea.
[11:17] Speaker 2: Making rocks. Yeah.
[11:20] Speaker 3: So he did still shake boss.
[11:22] Speaker 2: He did six months of that, and then he's released
[11:26] Speaker 2: and then he goes and he boosts another car and
[11:29] Speaker 2: he finds himself with a ten year sentence over his
[11:31] Speaker 2: head this time. And so his lawyer wrote in a
[11:34] Speaker 2: court motion, quote, we see a man who has been
[11:37] Speaker 2: thoroughly cast out by society, marked is a criminal at
[11:41] Speaker 2: seventeen years old, and constantly railroaded through judicial proceedings without
[11:45] Speaker 2: the benefit of counsel. Forrest Tucker was becoming an angry
[11:49] Speaker 2: young man. He was like, that's exactly what's happening here.
[11:53] Speaker 2: This guy, Morris has no hope, I mean none none.
[11:57] Speaker 2: His childhood friend of his, Morris Walton, said, quote, My
[12:00] Speaker 2: sense is he spent his life in jail for stealing
[12:02] Speaker 2: a bicycle and simply trying to escape. If he became bad,
[12:06] Speaker 2: it was only because the system made him that way.
[12:09] Speaker 3: So the conditions of his life Tucker just said quick
[12:12] Speaker 3: the dry was cast.
[12:14] Speaker 2: Yeah. So he still loved music. It was his passion,
[12:17] Speaker 2: and he tried to like get gigs with bands in Miami.
[12:20] Speaker 3: He could have been the next Bick spider Beck.
[12:22] Speaker 2: Nothing ever came of it, though he got married, but
[12:25] Speaker 2: then that fell apart, Like what's the guy to do?
[12:27] Speaker 3: Sure, crime crime it up.
[12:29] Speaker 2: So September twenty second, nineteen fifty, he's thirty years old,
[12:33] Speaker 2: old enough to know better. He strolls into this Miami
[12:37] Speaker 2: bank like, hey, what's up? How you doing? He's wearing
[12:39] Speaker 2: a mask and carrying a gun. He makes off with
[12:42] Speaker 2: one two hundred and seventy eight dollars and it worked
[12:47] Speaker 2: so well that he went back a couple of days
[12:49] Speaker 2: later and he stole the bank safe.
[12:51] Speaker 3: Oh the same bank, same bank. It's like, I like
[12:53] Speaker 3: that bank well.
[12:53] Speaker 2: And then he gets busted a few blocks away trying
[12:55] Speaker 2: to open it with a blowtorch. A few blocks oh
[12:58] Speaker 2: fwo blocks out in the set Like basically they took
[13:00] Speaker 2: it around the corner.
[13:00] Speaker 3: It doesn't even take it to like a garage, not
[13:03] Speaker 3: even to a shady alley.
[13:05] Speaker 2: He maybe took it into an.
[13:06] Speaker 3: He's like near a dumpster.
[13:07] Speaker 2: Okay, raccoons are peeking out. Back to the slammer.
[13:12] Speaker 3: Okay, back he goes.
[13:13] Speaker 2: Yeah, he's unfazed. This is what he said. Quote, it
[13:16] Speaker 2: didn't matter to me if they gave me five years,
[13:18] Speaker 2: ten years, or life. I was an escape artist. He
[13:22] Speaker 2: doesn't care.
[13:23] Speaker 3: So now he's got an identity. I like that for him.
[13:25] Speaker 3: He's like, I am in a.
[13:26] Speaker 2: School artist, so in jail, I cried. Therefore I am
[13:31] Speaker 2: right before Christmas, he said he was in terrible pain
[13:34] Speaker 2: and he was like he had to be rushed to
[13:35] Speaker 2: the hospital have his appendix. Yeah, and they chained him
[13:39] Speaker 2: to the bed while he recovered. But this is Forest Tucker.
[13:44] Speaker 2: He didn't just teach himself to play clarinet. He taught
[13:46] Speaker 2: himself how to picklocks.
[13:47] Speaker 3: Nice.
[13:49] Speaker 2: So a paper clip, some shuffling, and soon he's free.
[13:52] Speaker 3: Wow, a paper clip slipped out of.
[13:54] Speaker 2: The hospital and he took off like way off, like
[13:57] Speaker 2: California off.
[13:58] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[13:59] Speaker 2: He it was there that he went on a spree
[14:02] Speaker 2: of robberies. And he wasn't subtle, like he's robbing these
[14:05] Speaker 2: California banks wearing these like crazy loud suits, like checkered suits,
[14:11] Speaker 2: and he would like jump up on the counter and
[14:13] Speaker 2: point his gun and yell stuff like I mean business.
[14:16] Speaker 3: Yes. Yes.
[14:17] Speaker 2: His getaway was like this souped up fifties hot rod
[14:20] Speaker 2: with tubes along the side.
[14:23] Speaker 3: Yeah, running down the side.
[14:26] Speaker 2: Yeh.
[14:26] Speaker 3: Oh my god, I love this guy.
[14:28] Speaker 2: You know, eventually, of course he's caught.
[14:30] Speaker 3: Dude, Matthew McConaughey should play him.
[14:32] Speaker 2: Oh my god, yes, it would be so much better.
[14:36] Speaker 2: Two years after the hospital escape, he gets caught by
[14:39] Speaker 2: the FBI and he'd gone to pick up like all
[14:43] Speaker 2: the stuff that he had inside the safe deposit box
[14:45] Speaker 2: in San Francisco. The cops go down the peninsula that's
[14:48] Speaker 2: where they picked him up. They go down the peninsula
[14:50] Speaker 2: to his place in San Mateo, and they find a
[14:53] Speaker 2: young blonde woman, Shirley Bellow, living there. They asked her, Hey,
[14:57] Speaker 2: do you know Forrest Tucker. She's like no, Like, well,
[15:00] Speaker 2: what's your story? She said, Well, my husband, Richard Bellow,
[15:05] Speaker 2: he's a songwriter and he made tons of money and
[15:09] Speaker 2: we're very rich, and he commutes daily into San Francisco,
[15:14] Speaker 2: which is exactly what a songwriter.
[15:16] Speaker 3: That's how you do.
[15:17] Speaker 2: You know, you're after the industry.
[15:18] Speaker 3: Every free martini, give me your secretary. So you got
[15:21] Speaker 3: two o'clock with Don.
[15:22] Speaker 2: He told the Feds that they had just moved into
[15:25] Speaker 2: this larger apartment because now they had a five month
[15:27] Speaker 2: old son, Rick Bellew Junior. And the cops show her
[15:31] Speaker 2: a picture of Forrest Tucker and she gets all confused,
[15:35] Speaker 2: and they're like, this guy is a bank robber and
[15:37] Speaker 2: a fugitive, and she just bursts into tears.
[15:40] Speaker 3: My boy calls him daddy.
[15:41] Speaker 2: Yeah, she said, quote, I can't believe it. He was
[15:44] Speaker 2: such a good man, such a good provider. What's going
[15:46] Speaker 2: to become of our little baby? What's his name going
[15:48] Speaker 2: to be? He's not even Rick j. Because like in
[15:53] Speaker 2: that two years that he'd been on the run, like
[15:55] Speaker 2: being all flamboyant, he met a woman, Shirley Stores, at
[15:59] Speaker 2: a singles event in Oakland. They got married. Shirley was
[16:03] Speaker 2: a singer, She's sang in like a chorale, and he
[16:06] Speaker 2: would sit and listen to her for hours. This is
[16:09] Speaker 2: how he said, quote, we loved each other. I didn't
[16:11] Speaker 2: know how to explain to her the truth that this
[16:14] Speaker 2: was my way of life. So he keeps this secret thing.
[16:18] Speaker 2: This is what his son, Bellew Junior said, who kept
[16:20] Speaker 2: the name?
[16:21] Speaker 3: Really? The made up name, well, your name is. All
[16:24] Speaker 3: names are made up.
[16:25] Speaker 2: It's ultimately ultimately quote, I thought he died in an
[16:28] Speaker 2: automobile accident. That's what my mom told me to protect me.
[16:31] Speaker 2: My mom was afraid he'd come up to me on
[16:33] Speaker 2: the street and freak me out. He blew my mother's
[16:36] Speaker 2: world apart. She never remarried. There was a song she
[16:39] Speaker 2: used to sing to me, called Me in My Shadow,
[16:41] Speaker 2: all about being alone and blue, and when she had
[16:44] Speaker 2: cancer and wasn't going to live much longer. I broke
[16:46] Speaker 2: down and she sang that song, and I realized how
[16:48] Speaker 2: bittersweet it was. It was her life. I hear with
[16:51] Speaker 2: tears of breaking. Yes, but like, can you see the
[16:54] Speaker 2: scene in the movie.
[16:55] Speaker 3: Yes, I can.
[16:56] Speaker 2: That's the problem as I'm looking at this whole thing.
[16:58] Speaker 2: But yeah, it's like it's terrible. Yeah. So Bellow Junior.
[17:03] Speaker 3: And that's the song I know, Me and my okay exactly,
[17:06] Speaker 3: rolling down the lane.
[17:07] Speaker 4: Okay.
[17:07] Speaker 2: So the son and Tucker they write to each other
[17:11] Speaker 2: during one of Tucker's stints inside. In one of Tucker's
[17:14] Speaker 2: letters to Bellow Junior, he said, quote, I'm sorry things
[17:17] Speaker 2: turned out the way they did. I never got to
[17:19] Speaker 2: take you fishing, or to baseball games, or to see
[17:21] Speaker 2: you grow up. I don't ask you to forgive me,
[17:24] Speaker 2: as there's too much lost, but just so you know,
[17:26] Speaker 2: I wish you the best always your dad Forrest. So
[17:30] Speaker 2: it's like he, you know, he realizes what he you
[17:33] Speaker 2: KNOWA deprived this boy of not what he missed out on,
[17:36] Speaker 2: but what he deprived him of.
[17:37] Speaker 3: I think it's both. Yeah, I mean I think he's
[17:39] Speaker 3: basically saying, like, I missed out being your father. You
[17:41] Speaker 3: missed out on a father because of me.
[17:43] Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly. So September third, nineteen fifty three, at the
[17:46] Speaker 2: age of thirty three, Tucker goes to the Big Dog
[17:50] Speaker 2: of penitentiaries. He gets sent to Alcatraz, the rock thirty
[17:54] Speaker 2: year sentence.
[17:55] Speaker 3: Did he join the Bama Capone? He's like, I'll sit
[17:57] Speaker 3: in on.
[18:00] Speaker 2: So it's supposed to be a skateproof.
[18:02] Speaker 3: Sure, but this is Forest Tucker and we all know.
[18:04] Speaker 2: Yeah. So here's Tucker quote. Let me tell you about Alcatraz.
[18:07] Speaker 2: There were only fifteen hundred and seventy six people who
[18:11] Speaker 2: ever went there. I was number ten forty seven. It
[18:14] Speaker 2: was so cold in the cell block you had to
[18:16] Speaker 2: sleep with your coat and hat to stay warm. It's
[18:19] Speaker 2: cold out there.
[18:20] Speaker 3: I could not imagine I would have died if they
[18:23] Speaker 3: would have just found like a frozen little chip that
[18:26] Speaker 3: was me.
[18:27] Speaker 2: It's like he's there for a couple of weeks. Sureley
[18:30] Speaker 2: comes to visit. She came to visit with Yeah, this
[18:32] Speaker 2: is what he said. Quote. It was hard to talk.
[18:34] Speaker 2: We had to look at each other through a piece
[18:35] Speaker 2: of glass. She told me she had to make a
[18:37] Speaker 2: life for herself. I said, the best thing you can
[18:40] Speaker 2: do is make a life for you and our son.
[18:42] Speaker 2: I told her, I won't bother you no matter what,
[18:44] Speaker 2: no matter how much I want to, I won't ring
[18:46] Speaker 2: your phone. And so a few months later, he gets
[18:49] Speaker 2: a notice that the marriage has been annulled. Let's take
[18:52] Speaker 2: a break, we come back. We're going to head on
[18:55] Speaker 2: back to.
[18:55] Speaker 3: The rock because I'm shivering.
[19:17] Speaker 2: Sarah Elizabeth, Sarah Elizabeth, welcome. Hi. Okay. So when we
[19:22] Speaker 2: left off, Forrest Tucker locked up in Alcatraz. He'd escaped
[19:26] Speaker 2: from every other place he'd been sent, but the Rock
[19:28] Speaker 2: was supposed to be escape proof. Tucker had other ideas, obviously.
[19:34] Speaker 2: He and another inmate, a fellow bank robber, and like
[19:37] Speaker 2: a good escaper man, Teddy Green, he started plotting their
[19:41] Speaker 2: escape Teddy Green, who becomes like a lifelong friend of his,
[19:45] Speaker 2: Oh Danny Glover in the movie. So anyway, Teddy Green Green,
[19:52] Speaker 2: he once scooted by the fuzz by dressing as a priest.
[19:56] Speaker 2: Another time he escaped from prison by shipping himself out
[19:59] Speaker 2: in a b full of rags. It's a clever lad.
[20:03] Speaker 3: He's a man of the cloth.
[20:07] Speaker 2: So on Alcatraz, Tucker and Green they had prison jobs
[20:11] Speaker 2: that gave them access to tools, and they smuggled said
[20:15] Speaker 2: tools out of the shop and they hid the pieces
[20:17] Speaker 2: throughout the laundry and like in their toilet bowls. Oh
[20:20] Speaker 2: and they also they planted steel wool on other prisoners
[20:24] Speaker 2: to set off metal detectors, which I didn't even know
[20:27] Speaker 2: they had the metal detectors. So every night, the two
[20:31] Speaker 2: of them because like that, so they set off the
[20:33] Speaker 2: metal detectors and you know this, nothing is working here,
[20:36] Speaker 2: Like we can't use them anymore because they're not finding anything.
[20:40] Speaker 2: Every night they work on this tunnel that they started
[20:42] Speaker 2: that led to the basement and they wanted to slip
[20:45] Speaker 2: out into the freezing waters of the San Francisco Bay.
[20:48] Speaker 3: So their tunnel was going to go down to the
[20:49] Speaker 3: water and they're just going to slide into the potentially.
[20:51] Speaker 2: Yeah. So an inmate in solitary ratted them out before
[21:00] Speaker 2: he got tossed in. So he told the guards to
[21:03] Speaker 2: search all the cell toilets, and this netted a bunch
[21:07] Speaker 2: of tools, a bar spreader, a pair of sidecutters, a brace,
[21:13] Speaker 2: a screwdriver, some pieces of wire, a sharpening stone, and
[21:17] Speaker 2: a ding dang blowtorch to Aaron.
[21:19] Speaker 3: And a picture of Betty Grave.
[21:21] Speaker 2: Yes, so Tucker and Green they got labeled quote very
[21:25] Speaker 2: dangerous escape risks and sent to the treatment unit aka
[21:30] Speaker 2: the hole. This is how Tucker described it, quote I
[21:34] Speaker 2: remember walking in with no clothes or shoes on the
[21:37] Speaker 2: steel floor was so cold it hurt to touch it.
[21:40] Speaker 2: The only way to stay warm was to keep walking.
[21:43] Speaker 3: A steel floor. Oh he refrigerator right on the bay.
[21:49] Speaker 2: It's freezing.
[21:51] Speaker 3: And do they have a bed?
[21:53] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[21:54] Speaker 3: It doesn't sound like.
[21:54] Speaker 2: It doesn't sound like it. So here's a place where
[21:56] Speaker 2: the movie dropped the ball. I don't remember this scene
[21:59] Speaker 2: being in here that I'm going to tell you about. Sure,
[22:01] Speaker 2: it's super cinematic. One night, Tucker hears a sound through
[22:05] Speaker 2: the window while he's in the hole and he couldn't
[22:08] Speaker 2: see anyone outside, but he realizes it's the sound of
[22:10] Speaker 2: the guard's children singing Christmas carols. And this is what
[22:15] Speaker 2: he said, quote, it was the first children's voices I
[22:17] Speaker 2: had heard in years. It was Christmas Eve. Come on, man,
[22:22] Speaker 2: you're not going to put that in like seriously.
[22:24] Speaker 3: And also, can I question something here that the guards
[22:27] Speaker 3: did they have their families on the island. I always
[22:30] Speaker 3: assume they took the boats back to their families who
[22:31] Speaker 3: lived in the city. Or do you think the families
[22:33] Speaker 3: were like that and they came out to sing Christmas party,
[22:37] Speaker 3: party and they bring out or.
[22:38] Speaker 2: Yeah, exactly, and they you know, do all that kind
[22:40] Speaker 2: of stuff.
[22:42] Speaker 3: That is a very cinematic moment.
[22:43] Speaker 2: Right. So Tucker, he's stuck on the rock. He teaches
[22:46] Speaker 2: himself the law. He sent in appeals which were just
[22:49] Speaker 2: like perpetually dismissed, as you know, flights of fancy. He
[22:54] Speaker 2: got a hearing though in November of nineteen fifty six,
[22:57] Speaker 2: and the night before the court appearance, you know, send
[23:00] Speaker 2: you out to the courthouse. They actually took him down
[23:02] Speaker 2: to La He complained of kidney pain and they sent
[23:06] Speaker 2: him to La General Hospital. He he broke a pencil
[23:11] Speaker 2: and stabbed himself in the ankle when no one was
[23:13] Speaker 2: paying attention, and so like he's got shackles on his
[23:18] Speaker 2: wrists and his ankles, and so guard comes by and
[23:21] Speaker 2: he points down. He's like, I'm bleeding. This thing's cutting
[23:24] Speaker 2: into me. You got to take this thing off. And
[23:26] Speaker 2: so the guard takes off the leg irons, but Tucker
[23:29] Speaker 2: still handcuffed to the gurney. But you know Tucker, and
[23:33] Speaker 2: so he's getting wheeled into the X ray room. He
[23:36] Speaker 2: slips his cuffs, overpowers two guards and then bolts to
[23:39] Speaker 2: the door.
[23:40] Speaker 3: Do you think he paper clipped it again?
[23:41] Speaker 2: I think so. And they caught him not too much later.
[23:45] Speaker 2: He was still in his hospital gown. He was hiding
[23:47] Speaker 2: in a cornfield.
[23:48] Speaker 3: Man.
[23:49] Speaker 2: That's back in the day when they were still like
[23:51] Speaker 2: cornfields to Los Angeles.
[23:55] Speaker 3: And Jason did like almost downtown practice Elliott County.
[23:58] Speaker 2: Yeah, So he gets tried, convicted, sent back to Alcatraz.
[24:02] Speaker 2: Alcatraz gets closed March twenty first, nineteen sixty three, and
[24:06] Speaker 2: he got transferred over the Bay of San Quentin. Now
[24:09] Speaker 2: San Quentin at the time was known as the Gladiator School.
[24:13] Speaker 2: It was a rough, rough place.
[24:15] Speaker 3: It was the original Chino yeah, or.
[24:17] Speaker 2: Corcoran or like yeah, Pelican Bank. It's evolved over the years.
[24:21] Speaker 2: Now it's like a hub of you know, education and.
[24:24] Speaker 3: Reform stuff and actually a house for reform.
[24:27] Speaker 2: Yeah, and they have a lot of amenities for the inmates.
[24:30] Speaker 2: Back in those days, though, like we're talking on this point, sixties, seventies,
[24:33] Speaker 2: very eighties, it was wild, absolutely rough, And so for
[24:38] Speaker 2: whatever reason he's able to get another prison job there.
[24:42] Speaker 2: I'd be like, I wouldn't let the sky around, any tool,
[24:44] Speaker 2: any gadget, you know, sit in the library. You're not
[24:48] Speaker 2: getting a job. So that's just me. So he teams
[24:52] Speaker 2: up with two other jailbers.
[24:53] Speaker 3: A hard one.
[24:54] Speaker 2: I am John Waller and William McGirk.
[24:57] Speaker 3: Oh great name, I know mcgart So that tree.
[25:00] Speaker 2: The three of them, they ferreted away wood scraps and
[25:02] Speaker 2: like for mica sheets and then hid them under tarps,
[25:06] Speaker 2: and they lifted two six foot poles and buckets, tape
[25:12] Speaker 2: hat plastic dust covers, and they stored it all in
[25:16] Speaker 2: boxes labeled office supplies.
[25:18] Speaker 3: No one ever looks at those, No, that's a good cause.
[25:21] Speaker 2: August ninth, nineteen seventy nine. So remember he's fifty nine now.
[25:26] Speaker 2: He gave Waller and McGirk the signal. And remember how
[25:29] Speaker 2: when he was a little boy he built boats from scraps. Yeah,
[25:34] Speaker 2: well the skill never left him.
[25:35] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, I'm getting this.
[25:36] Speaker 2: So he built a fourteen foot kayak out of all
[25:39] Speaker 2: the pieces of wooden and formica.
[25:42] Speaker 3: And he did have a fourteen boat sitting somewhere.
[25:45] Speaker 2: This is when he said, quote a hammer was too loud,
[25:47] Speaker 2: so I had to use only tape and bolts.
[25:50] Speaker 4: Damn.
[25:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, he called it. He christened the boat and he
[25:55] Speaker 2: called it the rub a Dub Dub. And he only
[25:59] Speaker 2: had enough. Yeah, he only had enough paint for one
[26:02] Speaker 2: side of the boat, so he painted the side that
[26:06] Speaker 2: would be facing the guard towers.
[26:07] Speaker 3: See you know me, I would paint the bottom of
[26:09] Speaker 3: the boat because I'd want the waterproofing. That's just me.
[26:13] Speaker 2: Well then you know he also painted on the side
[26:15] Speaker 2: the Marine Yacht Club logo. Well, he'd seen boats going by,
[26:20] Speaker 2: like apparently like you used to be able to look
[26:22] Speaker 2: at like the views from San Quentin are jaw dropping,
[26:27] Speaker 2: just stunning. You're right kind of adjacent to like Tiberon
[26:30] Speaker 2: where houses are in the multi multimillions. Because of these
[26:33] Speaker 2: views and they've blocked it so that you can't go
[26:36] Speaker 2: and look out there anymore standing.
[26:39] Speaker 3: I've never been to Alcatraz Alcatraz, Yeah, I've never been
[26:44] Speaker 3: to either one of them. I've never been Valkatraz. I've
[26:46] Speaker 3: never been to Quentin either.
[26:48] Speaker 2: We've talked about I have. I want to do a show.
[26:50] Speaker 3: About Alcatraz, and I think we should.
[26:52] Speaker 2: But I've actually been in San I've not did either. Yeah,
[26:56] Speaker 2: So this one so he at the time they could
[26:58] Speaker 2: see all these boats. He sees the Marina club logo,
[27:01] Speaker 2: paints it on the side of his car, ironically, do
[27:07] Speaker 2: a little time and sussle. So the three dudes they
[27:11] Speaker 2: get out on the water and it's like a lot
[27:12] Speaker 2: rougher than Yeah, crazy, super choppy. They're like twenty mile
[27:16] Speaker 2: an hour winds.
[27:16] Speaker 3: I'm a calm mis day.
[27:17] Speaker 2: It's jo So there's some swells. This is what Waller said.
[27:21] Speaker 2: Quote the boat didn't leak a drop. We could have
[27:24] Speaker 2: paddled to Australia. It was those damn waves over the side.
[27:28] Speaker 2: And we finally reached the edge of the property at
[27:31] Speaker 2: q meaning said Quentin the son of a sake. So
[27:36] Speaker 2: a tower guard looks out, sees them hanging on to
[27:40] Speaker 2: this upside down kayak like kicking and paddling towards the shore,
[27:43] Speaker 2: and the guards called out like you fellas need help
[27:47] Speaker 2: because they think they're with the yacht club. Oh go,
[27:49] Speaker 2: and they're like, no, we're fine. And then McGirk like
[27:52] Speaker 2: he holds his wrist up and he shouts, we just
[27:54] Speaker 2: lost a couple of oars. But my time Ax is
[27:56] Speaker 2: still running. Cards are just cracking up. They love this.
[28:01] Speaker 2: They're like so chummy. And so the trio they get
[28:04] Speaker 2: to the shore and then they're on their way to freedom.
[28:07] Speaker 2: Off they go, I love it. So of course there's
[28:09] Speaker 2: like a statewide man hunt. Well come on, let them go, right,
[28:13] Speaker 2: But like tech, well they're too smart to stick around, right,
[28:16] Speaker 2: So this time, the three of them they take off
[28:19] Speaker 2: and at around the same time Oklahoma and Texas three
[28:23] Speaker 2: quote old men as have the witness statements say, start
[28:26] Speaker 2: robbing banks all over Oklahoma and Texas. One is even
[28:30] Speaker 2: wearing a hearing aid. And so the authorities they compared
[28:34] Speaker 2: them to the aged criminals in the movie Going in Style.
[28:38] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, yeah.
[28:40] Speaker 2: So the press start calling them the over the Hill gang.
[28:42] Speaker 2: And in the movie, you know that old man and
[28:46] Speaker 2: the gun. That's like Danny Glover, Tom Waits. They kind
[28:49] Speaker 2: of blend Danny Glover into a bunch of people. So Tucker,
[28:53] Speaker 2: in later interviews said he was only improving with age
[28:56] Speaker 2: and that he'd really mastered his craft by the time
[28:59] Speaker 2: he hit six and like he could talk right.
[29:02] Speaker 3: So this is You've been out of the game for
[29:03] Speaker 3: ten years, but I got right back in it.
[29:05] Speaker 2: Yeah. He gave an interview from prison at the age
[29:07] Speaker 2: of seventy nine and provided a bank robbing tutorial. So this
[29:11] Speaker 2: is what he said. Quote. First of all, you want
[29:14] Speaker 2: a place near the highway, then you need to case it.
[29:16] Speaker 2: You can't just storm in. You need to size it up. No,
[29:19] Speaker 2: a like your own home. In the old days, the
[29:22] Speaker 2: stick up men were like cowboys. They would just go
[29:24] Speaker 2: in shoot and yelling for everybody to lie down. But
[29:26] Speaker 2: to me, violence is the first sign of an amateur.
[29:31] Speaker 2: Love that one.
[29:32] Speaker 3: That's good.
[29:32] Speaker 2: There's an art to robbing a bank if you do
[29:35] Speaker 2: it right. Okay, the tools you can wear gloves, but
[29:38] Speaker 2: in warmer climates they only draw attention. And then he
[29:41] Speaker 2: went on to talk about how nail polisher super glue
[29:44] Speaker 2: was better at covering your finger takes Yes, he said
[29:47] Speaker 2: you needed a glass cutter, a holster, and a gun
[29:49] Speaker 2: just as a prop and a canvas bag quote big
[29:52] Speaker 2: enough for the dough. And then there's his trademark, the
[29:56] Speaker 2: hearing aid. Right, it wasn't a hearing aid. It was
[29:58] Speaker 2: an ear piece linked to police scanner that he had
[30:01] Speaker 2: wired into his shirt. And then that way he'd know
[30:04] Speaker 2: when the silent alarm was triggered. That's brilliant genius, especially
[30:07] Speaker 2: because he's just an old man with a hearing aid. Yeah,
[30:10] Speaker 2: this is what he said. Quote. Once you've got your
[30:12] Speaker 2: cool car park nearby, you've got your radio, your hands
[30:16] Speaker 2: are covered with gloves or super glue. You walk in,
[30:19] Speaker 2: go right up to the manager. Say sit down, Never
[30:21] Speaker 2: pull the gun, just flash it. Tell him calmly, you're
[30:25] Speaker 2: here to rob the bank, and it better go off
[30:26] Speaker 2: without a hitch. Don't run from the bank unless you're
[30:29] Speaker 2: being shot at, because it only shows that something's going on.
[30:32] Speaker 2: Just walk to the hot car, real calm, Then drive
[30:35] Speaker 2: to the cool car, rev it up, and you're gone.
[30:37] Speaker 2: I've just given you a manual on how to rob
[30:39] Speaker 2: a bank. No one can teach you the craft. You
[30:41] Speaker 2: can only learn by doing.
[30:43] Speaker 3: Guess what I'm doing this weekend Elizabeth.
[30:47] Speaker 2: So there's this guy, John Hunt. He's the Austin police
[30:50] Speaker 2: sergeant who was like Hunting No, right Over the Hill Gang,
[30:54] Speaker 2: he said, quote, they were the most professional, successful robbers
[30:58] Speaker 2: that I ever encountered in all my years on the force.
[31:01] Speaker 2: They had more experience in robbery than we had catching them.
[31:05] Speaker 2: They'd get up every day and beyond the job. Just
[31:07] Speaker 2: as a welder gets good at welding, or a writer
[31:10] Speaker 2: gets good over the years by writing, these guys learned
[31:12] Speaker 2: from their mistakes. It so over the course of one year,
[31:17] Speaker 2: they boosted sixty stores and banks in Oklahoma and Texas,
[31:21] Speaker 2: twenty in Dallas Fort Worth alone.
[31:23] Speaker 3: It's like one every five days.
[31:24] Speaker 2: Oh yeah. They did hold ups in New Mexico, Arizona, Louisiana,
[31:29] Speaker 2: and then like they're all over the papers. The headlines
[31:31] Speaker 2: are like senior citizens strike again and middle aged bendits
[31:35] Speaker 2: puzzle detectives. So March seventh, nineteen eighty three, the Over
[31:40] Speaker 2: the Hill Gang continues their march east and they hit
[31:44] Speaker 2: first Bristol County National Bank in Massachusetts. And Tucker, he
[31:48] Speaker 2: was proud of it. He called it, quote a breakthrough
[31:51] Speaker 2: in the art. Yeah.
[31:53] Speaker 3: So finding new ways to rob it bank.
[31:56] Speaker 2: There was an armored car scheduled to arrive at this bank,
[31:59] Speaker 2: and then Tucker and the boys they showed up ahead
[32:01] Speaker 2: of them dressed as Brinks guards making the pickup. So
[32:05] Speaker 2: they go in there wearing like makeup and mustaches, and
[32:08] Speaker 2: Tucker usually had a wig that he wore, but he
[32:10] Speaker 2: had to ditch it. Why do you have to digitalis
[32:13] Speaker 2: why digitalism? Question? The wig shrank in a snowstorm. It
[32:17] Speaker 2: didn't fit anymore, like what was it?
[32:19] Speaker 4: Wool?
[32:20] Speaker 3: Like, what's happening.
[32:22] Speaker 2: It's like, oh, that's not gonna work. And he didn't
[32:24] Speaker 2: have time to score another one, so he just went
[32:26] Speaker 2: without it.
[32:27] Speaker 3: He's like, exactly, it's a little beret.
[32:31] Speaker 2: So the guys they show up in costume, they get
[32:33] Speaker 2: buzzed into the bank. They go into the vault. The
[32:36] Speaker 2: bank manager saw some of the mustaches starting to peel
[32:39] Speaker 2: away from the guy's faces, and at the exact moment
[32:42] Speaker 2: one of the gang like pats the gun on his
[32:44] Speaker 2: hip and says, this is a hold up. Yes, so
[32:48] Speaker 2: they locked two tellers and the bank manager in there.
[32:51] Speaker 3: I'm going to need to sit down a moment.
[32:52] Speaker 2: Exactly, Sayatica. And then Tucker and the boys made off
[32:56] Speaker 2: with over four hundred and thirty thousand dollars. Oh yeah,
[33:00] Speaker 2: so police they show the bank employee mugshots. Tucker's identified.
[33:05] Speaker 2: This hadn't happened since the rubb a Dub dub incident
[33:08] Speaker 2: in San Quentin. They finally that's the guy. So the
[33:12] Speaker 2: cops know it's Tucker. But where was he Florida? Back
[33:16] Speaker 2: to the start. Yeah, he checked in with Green, his
[33:19] Speaker 2: Alcatraz pal, every day, making sure the coast was clear.
[33:23] Speaker 2: June tenth, nineteen eighty three, Tucker heads over to Greens
[33:27] Speaker 2: and he finds himself surrounded by the FBI. They're just
[33:31] Speaker 2: they've got him. They'd been tailing Green.
[33:35] Speaker 3: Other unrelated crimes.
[33:37] Speaker 2: So a gunfight ensues. Yeah, and Tucker gets hit in
[33:42] Speaker 2: both arms and in the leg, and so he took
[33:45] Speaker 2: off his car, but then he like crashed a little
[33:47] Speaker 2: bit away.
[33:48] Speaker 3: Yeah, you can't get fun.
[33:48] Speaker 2: He jumps out of the car and tries to hoof it.
[33:51] Speaker 2: And so this is nineteen eighty three, So he's a
[33:54] Speaker 2: sixty three year old man. At this point, he's running
[33:57] Speaker 2: down the road. A woman and her two kids are
[33:59] Speaker 2: dry by. They see a bloody old man jogging down
[34:02] Speaker 2: the road next to her. She thinks he's been hit
[34:05] Speaker 2: by a car or something, because he always dressed really nicely.
[34:08] Speaker 2: So she pulls over. She offers him a ride to
[34:11] Speaker 2: the hospital, and he basically carjacks her, and he shoves
[34:16] Speaker 2: himself into the driver's seat, and I guess he was
[34:19] Speaker 2: holding a rifle that she didn't see. Thanks, I will
[34:21] Speaker 2: take that, and he yells, I have a gun. Now
[34:24] Speaker 2: drive And then one of the kids sees the rifle
[34:27] Speaker 2: and yells criminal. And I was going to say, it's
[34:31] Speaker 2: very young Elizabeth behavior like a dutiful citizen for him.
[34:36] Speaker 2: When I was a little girl, every time, apparently I
[34:38] Speaker 2: don't recall, but every time we were like in the
[34:40] Speaker 2: car and my mom made a U turn, I would
[34:42] Speaker 2: ask her if it was legal? Is this illegal? You turn?
[34:45] Speaker 4: Like?
[34:45] Speaker 2: I was so much fun as a kid. I'm surprised
[34:48] Speaker 2: I wasn't just abandoned on like a fire station doorstep.
[34:52] Speaker 2: I would not blame my family.
[34:54] Speaker 3: Can you be asking is this legal?
[34:56] Speaker 2: Legal?
[34:57] Speaker 4: Child?
[34:57] Speaker 3: Here?
[34:58] Speaker 2: So Tucker and the Fan family are in the car
[35:01] Speaker 2: together in this crazy like he somehow has a rifle
[35:04] Speaker 2: that he's hidden on his pantle. Like they get about
[35:07] Speaker 2: a half a mile down the road, not too far,
[35:09] Speaker 2: and then he realizes he's going down to dead end street,
[35:13] Speaker 2: and so he lets the mother and children go. He
[35:15] Speaker 2: jumps out of the car and then passes out. Oh,
[35:19] Speaker 2: let's take a break when we come back. I'm going
[35:21] Speaker 2: to tell you how this went for him.
[35:22] Speaker 5: Oh please, hello, Hi, Hello. You know it's ridiculous that voice.
[35:47] Speaker 2: Yeah, hi, okay, So I was so courteously interrupted by
[35:52] Speaker 2: those brilliant ads. I was telling you about Forrest Tucker
[35:56] Speaker 2: and what kind of feels like is his last stand?
[35:58] Speaker 3: Oh yeah, he got gunshot to most carjacked a lady.
[36:02] Speaker 3: I didn't go well.
[36:03] Speaker 2: He got called a criminal by an eight year old.
[36:06] Speaker 3: Lying in the street.
[36:09] Speaker 2: It's not by a long shot, Sarah, don't give up
[36:12] Speaker 2: on him. So let's check in on his life in
[36:15] Speaker 2: Florida up until that point. All right, he'd been living
[36:18] Speaker 2: in a really fancy retirement community in Laughter Hill, Florida,
[36:21] Speaker 2: which is like Lauderdale, but the Hill instead Dale. And
[36:26] Speaker 2: he wasn't alone there. He was shacked up with an
[36:29] Speaker 2: heiress to a moving company named Jewel Centers. That's her name,
[36:33] Speaker 2: not the moving company. Like it caused me a little
[36:36] Speaker 2: bit of confusion. So her name is Jewel Centers.
[36:39] Speaker 3: I wish your name is like Jewels Brinks.
[36:43] Speaker 2: So that's her name. That's not the end of the
[36:45] Speaker 2: moving company. Uh So Tucker went down but not out
[36:50] Speaker 2: in a blaze of glory. The FBI. They go to
[36:53] Speaker 2: Jewel's house and they had some questions.
[36:55] Speaker 3: He survived, the laying in the street passing.
[36:58] Speaker 2: He survived. They arrested him, took him in. They go
[37:01] Speaker 2: to his lady's house and they're like, I got some
[37:04] Speaker 2: questions about Forrest Tucker And just like poor sorrowful Shirley
[37:09] Speaker 2: Bellow remember me in my shadow? Jules like, I don't
[37:12] Speaker 2: know who that is, never heard of that guy. No,
[37:15] Speaker 2: my husband's name is Bob Callahan, which is such a
[37:18] Speaker 2: great country club.
[37:20] Speaker 3: Name, totally big Bob club.
[37:22] Speaker 2: She's like, he's a stockbroker, of course. And she'd met
[37:26] Speaker 2: Bob not too long after she lost her first husband.
[37:29] Speaker 2: They met at a private club called the Whale and Porpoise. Yeah,
[37:33] Speaker 2: he came over to ask me to dance and that
[37:35] Speaker 2: was that, which like time out, Okay, let's go back
[37:38] Speaker 2: Whale and Porpoise. So at the time it was like
[37:41] Speaker 2: a private social club. But I found the address for it,
[37:45] Speaker 2: and today it's for a male strip club called Labert
[37:49] Speaker 2: La Vare, which is billed as the quote ultimate club
[37:55] Speaker 2: for ladies, the hottest male review show in Florida.
[37:58] Speaker 3: Review.
[37:59] Speaker 2: Since I can't find any but looking, I was really
[38:01] Speaker 2: trying to find information about whale and poor posts, okay,
[38:04] Speaker 2: because like I'm fascinated Sideline. I wanted interior photos. I
[38:08] Speaker 2: wanted like gossip column kind of layout. Yeah, and so
[38:13] Speaker 2: I instead in the instead of that, I present to
[38:16] Speaker 2: you some labeer YELP reviews. Oh yeah, Charlotte W said
[38:21] Speaker 2: one star. This establishment falsely advertised the mail review with
[38:26] Speaker 2: photos of adult men. Only three dancers over twenty five
[38:29] Speaker 2: years old, poor routines. Only three dancers performed, not worth
[38:33] Speaker 2: the time, poor customer service, nothing high end about the venue.
[38:38] Speaker 3: I want to hear the rest of her strip club reviews.
[38:40] Speaker 3: It's like, when you're going around giving strip club reviews,
[38:42] Speaker 3: I'm like, how many of these?
[38:43] Speaker 2: I don't like these barely legal dancers. Basically what she's saying,
[38:46] Speaker 2: I want some.
[38:48] Speaker 3: Man, I want some hair on that chest. It's gray and.
[38:51] Speaker 2: Silver Wanson over the hill game Fox. Yeah. So but
[38:55] Speaker 2: then there's Alex V who gave it five stars. I
[38:58] Speaker 2: went here two years ago for a batch. B a
[39:02] Speaker 2: h right, and I'm like, for a bop? Do they
[39:04] Speaker 2: do like a bock nail? Do they do like a quartet?
[39:08] Speaker 2: Night with like a concert?
[39:09] Speaker 3: Team turns?
[39:11] Speaker 2: So it's batch. I went here two years ago for
[39:14] Speaker 2: a batch and then again on Saturday for another batch,
[39:17] Speaker 2: and every time I go it is so much fun
[39:19] Speaker 2: exclamation point. The men are so respectful and aren't rough.
[39:23] Speaker 2: Trust me, I've been to ones where they have banged
[39:25] Speaker 2: my head in their hips. I always scope out Valentino
[39:29] Speaker 2: because he is my favorite and beyond gorgeous. All the
[39:31] Speaker 2: guys can dance and are so worth it.
[39:34] Speaker 3: Yes, I learned a lot. Don't get your head banged
[39:39] Speaker 3: by a dancer on their hips bangs.
[39:43] Speaker 2: Help Okay, So no, I could go on and on
[39:49] Speaker 2: back to the FBI.
[39:51] Speaker 3: FBI.
[39:52] Speaker 2: So the FBI tells her, look, we don't care about
[39:55] Speaker 2: the wheel on the porpoise. Your husband, Bob, he's really Tucker.
[39:58] Speaker 2: And Jules said, I told him, I don't believe a
[40:00] Speaker 2: word you're saying. But they had him. They shot him
[40:02] Speaker 2: three times. Well, there you go. So she went to
[40:06] Speaker 2: him to visit him in prison and he said, quote,
[40:11] Speaker 2: I told her that from then on, I'd only look
[40:13] Speaker 2: at ways to escape. She's one in a million, and
[40:17] Speaker 2: so she's.
[40:17] Speaker 3: Like he told her, I'll escaped prison for you, Like, don't,
[40:20] Speaker 3: don't leave me, I'll get out of it.
[40:21] Speaker 2: Like he can't help himself. So while he's a waiting trial,
[40:24] Speaker 2: he cuts a bar from his cell with a hack
[40:27] Speaker 2: saw who keeps giving him hack sauce. He makes it
[40:30] Speaker 2: to the roof with a homemade grappling hook and has
[40:33] Speaker 2: caught immediately. And then Jewel was like, okay, stop stop.
[40:38] Speaker 2: I will stick with you, but you have to mend
[40:41] Speaker 2: your ways, like you have to go straight, and he's like,
[40:44] Speaker 2: for you anything, yes I will. Really they had to
[40:47] Speaker 2: have the marriaginal because it's, you know, fraud. He's not
[40:50] Speaker 2: Bob Callahan. But Jewel stuck with him. Yes, she stayed
[40:54] Speaker 2: right with him. He gets sent back to San Quentin
[40:57] Speaker 2: and he kept writing appeals. He even got his sentence reduced,
[41:02] Speaker 2: and he wrote to one judge, this is to thank you.
[41:05] Speaker 2: It's the first break I ever got in my life.
[41:07] Speaker 2: I won't need another.
[41:08] Speaker 3: So it sounds earnest.
[41:10] Speaker 2: He knew that he was amazing and that his story
[41:13] Speaker 2: was compelling, so he started trying to write a book screenplay.
[41:19] Speaker 2: That's what you do.
[41:19] Speaker 3: He's crimed long enough, he's now he's a qualified author.
[41:23] Speaker 2: He should automatically get an agent.
[41:25] Speaker 3: So he put he go to prisons. Is that like
[41:29] Speaker 3: they used to go to colleges? Go to prisons? Okay,
[41:32] Speaker 3: what are you in for?
[41:34] Speaker 2: He wrote two hundred and sixty one pages for a
[41:36] Speaker 2: book he called Alcatraz The True Story, and then another
[41:39] Speaker 2: one called The can Opener, and where he describes himself
[41:44] Speaker 2: as a throwback quote to the highly intelligent, non violent
[41:47] Speaker 2: type of criminal in the Willie Sutton mold oh, shut
[41:50] Speaker 2: out god. Yeah. So nineteen ninety three, he's seventy three
[41:53] Speaker 2: years old, back out life as a civilian.
[41:56] Speaker 3: I love it.
[41:57] Speaker 2: He and Jewel they got a place in Pampino Beach, Florida.
[42:00] Speaker 2: She stuck with him. He had a music room there
[42:02] Speaker 2: and he gave a saxophone and clarinet lessons for twenty
[42:05] Speaker 2: five bucks an hour. Wow, Jules said, quote, we had
[42:08] Speaker 2: a wonderful life. He has all these talents that have
[42:11] Speaker 2: been wasted all these years. And so he played local
[42:15] Speaker 2: jazz clubs. But the whole book thing never got off.
[42:18] Speaker 2: The ground, he said, quote. I called Clint Eastwood's secretary,
[42:22] Speaker 2: but she said, unless you have an agent, he won't
[42:24] Speaker 2: read it.
[42:25] Speaker 3: So true.
[42:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, so, Saren, Tucker, at this point in my story
[42:29] Speaker 2: is seventy eight years old, nineteen ninety nine, and while
[42:33] Speaker 2: his story is so cinematic, I haven't asked you to
[42:36] Speaker 2: picture anything. No, you have not, well, because it's been
[42:39] Speaker 2: all one big picture it.
[42:40] Speaker 3: Oh, look at you.
[42:42] Speaker 2: JK just kidding, Saren, closed your eyes, Okay, I want
[42:47] Speaker 2: you to picture it. Yes, you are Forest Tucker's police scanner,
[42:52] Speaker 2: hearing aid. He has just nestled you into his ear.
[42:55] Speaker 2: As the two of you stand in the bathroom of
[42:57] Speaker 2: his tastefully decorated, well appointed Pompano Beach home.
[43:00] Speaker 3: I'm so warm.
[43:01] Speaker 2: He has painted his fingertips with clear nail polish and
[43:04] Speaker 2: is dressed all in white pressed white pants, a white
[43:07] Speaker 2: sports shirt, white suede shoes, and a white ascot Pablo.
[43:12] Speaker 2: You and Tucker pop into his car and cruise an
[43:15] Speaker 2: hour and a half up the coast to Jupiter, Florida.
[43:17] Speaker 2: You know what your job is. You've done this a
[43:20] Speaker 2: few times with him recently. As you pull into the
[43:22] Speaker 2: parking lot of the Republic security bank. Tucker pulls the
[43:25] Speaker 2: white ascot up over his lower face Bendito style. He
[43:29] Speaker 2: reaches into the canvas bag that he's carrying and pulls
[43:32] Speaker 2: out an old US Army COLT forty five. He strolls
[43:35] Speaker 2: up for the first teller and says, put your money
[43:38] Speaker 2: on the counter, all of it. The teller walks over
[43:40] Speaker 2: to another teller and gets some cash. You are chirping
[43:43] Speaker 2: in his ear about a loose dog or a stolen car.
[43:46] Speaker 2: Nothing about the bank. Tucker takes the money from the
[43:49] Speaker 2: teller and flips through the bills looking for diepacks. He
[43:52] Speaker 2: counts out a little over five thousand dollars. More squawk
[43:55] Speaker 2: from you about a shoplifting call, but nothing about the bank.
[43:59] Speaker 2: Tucker gracious, thanks the tuellers, and the two of you
[44:01] Speaker 2: amble back to his car. From there, you guys drive
[44:05] Speaker 2: you about a mile or so away, and you pull
[44:07] Speaker 2: up next to a red Grand Am. That's the cool car.
[44:10] Speaker 2: Tucker wipes down the interior of the hot car you've
[44:13] Speaker 2: just been riding in and starts to transfer his stuff
[44:16] Speaker 2: into the new car. A bottle of heart medicine, a
[44:18] Speaker 2: three fifty seven magnum, a sawd off, a carbine, two
[44:23] Speaker 2: black nylon caps, a holster, a can of mace, para
[44:27] Speaker 2: smith and wesson handcuffs, two rolls of black electrical tape,
[44:30] Speaker 2: a police badge, five triple A batteries, a police scanner,
[44:34] Speaker 2: a glass cutter, gloves, and a fishing cap. It'scott a scanner,
[44:38] Speaker 2: so he shuts you off. You sit silently in his ear.
[44:41] Speaker 2: The two of you head back down to Pompino Beach.
[44:44] Speaker 2: Tucker notices an unmarked car following him, then a police car.
[44:48] Speaker 2: He guns it. You are resting in the ear of
[44:51] Speaker 2: a seventy eight year old bank robber involved in a
[44:53] Speaker 2: car chase, And if it weren't for the fact that
[44:55] Speaker 2: you are but an arrangement of plastic and wires, you
[44:57] Speaker 2: have never felt more alive. Just like the last time
[45:01] Speaker 2: this happened, Tucker accidentally pulls into a dead end. He
[45:04] Speaker 2: wheels the car around like an expert wheelman. He's now
[45:07] Speaker 2: facing the two cars that had chased him, blocking the road,
[45:10] Speaker 2: and more sirens in the distance. You feel his breathing quickened,
[45:14] Speaker 2: and you see what he sees. There's a space between
[45:16] Speaker 2: the patrol car and a wooden fence. He floors at
[45:20] Speaker 2: a giant grin on his face. He clears the space
[45:22] Speaker 2: between the cop car and the fence, but loses control
[45:25] Speaker 2: of the car, skids over an embankment and hits a
[45:27] Speaker 2: palm tree. You are sent flying into the dashboard, getting
[45:30] Speaker 2: wedged against the windshield. The airbags go off in pin
[45:33] Speaker 2: Tucker in the seat. That was quite a ride. So Jule,
[45:38] Speaker 2: she had no explanation for the husband's HeSE while she's
[45:41] Speaker 2: out like getting her hair done and lunching with her friends. Quote,
[45:45] Speaker 2: he didn't do it for the money. We had a
[45:47] Speaker 2: new car, nice home, paid for beautiful clothes. He had everything.
[45:51] Speaker 2: And this is what a court psychologist said, quote. I've
[45:54] Speaker 2: seen many individuals who are self aggrandizing and that would
[45:57] Speaker 2: like to make their mark on history. But none must
[46:00] Speaker 2: admit that I heard that would want to, other than
[46:03] Speaker 2: in the movies, go out in a blaze in a
[46:05] Speaker 2: bank robbery. It is beyond the realm of psychological prediction.
[46:09] Speaker 2: So Tucker, that was his plan.
[46:12] Speaker 3: He wanted to go out in a blaze of glory. Yes,
[46:14] Speaker 3: this is like basically a yeah.
[46:16] Speaker 2: And he can't stop himself. Yeah, so he gets put.
[46:18] Speaker 3: Something you always say about the lack of impulse control.
[46:21] Speaker 2: Yeah, he gets put in this like semi isolation, and
[46:25] Speaker 2: it was all we request were manager honor, no bail, Yeah,
[46:28] Speaker 2: of course not. And so his lawyer was like, but
[46:30] Speaker 2: he could die in these conditions, and the magistrate said, quote,
[46:34] Speaker 2: ordinarily I would not consider a seventy eight year old
[46:37] Speaker 2: man of flight risk or a danger to the community.
[46:40] Speaker 2: But mister Tucker has proved himself to be remarkably agile.
[46:44] Speaker 2: So he pleaded guilty. October twentieth, the year two thousand.
[46:48] Speaker 3: Oh wow.
[46:49] Speaker 2: He got a thirteen year sentence at the Federal Medical
[46:52] Speaker 2: Center in Fort Worth, Texas. And he had like a
[46:55] Speaker 2: bunch of strokes after he went inside, and apparently blood
[46:58] Speaker 2: clots were like slowly cutting off the oxygen to his brain.
[47:01] Speaker 2: Here's what he said, quote. Everyone says I'm smart, but
[47:05] Speaker 2: I'm not smart in the ways of life, or I
[47:07] Speaker 2: wouldn't have done the things I did. When I die,
[47:09] Speaker 2: no one will remember me. I wish I had a
[47:11] Speaker 2: real profession, something like the music business. I regret not
[47:15] Speaker 2: being able to work steady and support my family. I
[47:17] Speaker 2: have other regrets too, but that's as much as one
[47:20] Speaker 2: man can stand. Late at night, you lie in your
[47:22] Speaker 2: bunk in prison, and you think about what you'd lost,
[47:25] Speaker 2: what you were, what you could have been, and you regret.
[47:28] Speaker 2: What hurts most is that I know how much I
[47:30] Speaker 2: disappointed my wife. That hurts more than anything.
[47:33] Speaker 3: I bet it did. He's promised her and then he
[47:35] Speaker 3: went back, oh promised, because he couldn't control himself do it.
[47:38] Speaker 2: So he passed away May twenty ninth, two thousand and four,
[47:41] Speaker 2: at the age of eighty three.
[47:42] Speaker 3: So that was the Sissy's basic character from the movie.
[47:45] Speaker 2: Yes, Jewel, it was Jewel. He was still in jail
[47:48] Speaker 2: when he died, and he was buried in Mansfield, Texas.
[47:51] Speaker 2: In twenty eighteen, the Old Man and the Gun came out,
[47:54] Speaker 2: and there's a scene in the movie where Tucker hands
[47:57] Speaker 2: a list of his escapes to Jewel, with the last
[48:00] Speaker 2: number nineteen being blank. And this actually happened, but not
[48:04] Speaker 2: with Jewel. When he was eighty three. He gave the
[48:07] Speaker 2: list to David Graham, a writer for The New Yorker,
[48:10] Speaker 2: and it was his article that got adapted into the movie.
[48:14] Speaker 2: And on Gran's list, the nineteenth space was never filled,
[48:17] Speaker 2: So that was his what what's your ridiculous takeaway?
[48:21] Speaker 3: Man? When you gave that list? What was all this stuff?
[48:24] Speaker 3: In his car. I was like, that sounds like the
[48:26] Speaker 3: best I'm going to go camping list I can think
[48:29] Speaker 3: of now. I mean all honesty, like, it's not so
[48:33] Speaker 3: terribly ridiculous, it's more much more. It's like it's just
[48:38] Speaker 3: kind of like an observation.
[48:40] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[48:40] Speaker 3: Basically The Man with the Gun, as you pointed out,
[48:44] Speaker 3: missed as a movie, right, but yet it captured the
[48:47] Speaker 3: feeling I had at the end of his life right
[48:50] Speaker 3: when you described like, I was like really sad for
[48:52] Speaker 3: them that like they couldn't he couldn't make their love work.
[48:55] Speaker 3: They had everything, as she pointed out, the you know,
[48:57] Speaker 3: the car, the house, the nice house, everything they had
[48:59] Speaker 3: each other love, and still he can't help himself and
[49:01] Speaker 3: he goes out and he gets like five grand from
[49:03] Speaker 3: the bank robbery or whatever. But that's exactly how that
[49:07] Speaker 3: movie felt, was the later years, the sadness of him
[49:10] Speaker 3: not being able to not be himself even in the
[49:13] Speaker 3: face of something like love, which he's obviously wanted this
[49:15] Speaker 3: whole time.
[49:15] Speaker 2: Well, I'm seeing like a what could have been that
[49:17] Speaker 2: was so much in the movie of like the life
[49:19] Speaker 2: that he could have had.
[49:20] Speaker 3: So I will say that what's ridiculous is you made
[49:23] Speaker 3: me like that movie more by telling this story.
[49:25] Speaker 2: Oh really, see there you go, there you go.
[49:28] Speaker 3: You liked it.
[49:30] Speaker 2: Well. I think the way you put it makes so
[49:32] Speaker 2: much more sense. And I just want to see a
[49:37] Speaker 2: young version of it. I want another movie, so I
[49:40] Speaker 2: don't want to erase the one that fits the end
[49:42] Speaker 2: of his life. I want a young one totally.
[49:44] Speaker 3: I'm with you on that. Just the rub a dub
[49:47] Speaker 3: dub three and a tub.
[49:52] Speaker 2: Captain d give me a talkback.
