[0:00] Speaker 1: Ridiculous Crime is a production of iHeartRadio.
[0:04] Speaker 2: And Hey Elizabeth, Hey over here. Nice, Hey, it's you.
[0:09] Speaker 3: It's me.
[0:10] Speaker 2: I've been waiting to see you because I have this
[0:11] Speaker 2: question I wanted to ask you. Yeah, good, okay, here,
[0:13] Speaker 2: it's a simple question. Sure, do you know what's ridiculous?
[0:15] Speaker 4: I do what? I too? Walt Disney?
[0:19] Speaker 2: What?
[0:19] Speaker 4: Yeah?
[0:20] Speaker 3: How?
[0:20] Speaker 4: So do you know what his last words were?
[0:23] Speaker 3: Help?
[0:23] Speaker 2: I'm trapping his box, let me out.
[0:24] Speaker 4: He was all so cold. I have no idea his
[0:29] Speaker 4: last words. Okay.
[0:29] Speaker 5: So he passed away in nineteen sixty six cancer and
[0:33] Speaker 5: he's on his deathbed and he asked for a notepad
[0:37] Speaker 5: and he scribbles down a bunch of stuff, and then
[0:41] Speaker 5: his last words were, Kurt Russell, what are you kidding?
[0:47] Speaker 4: I'm dead serious.
[0:48] Speaker 2: He was a child actor for him at the time,
[0:50] Speaker 2: and he's not like, you know, referring to him as
[0:51] Speaker 2: Snake pliskin.
[0:52] Speaker 4: Right, Yeah, he was a child actor.
[0:54] Speaker 5: He'd done Disney stuff, you know, the Barefoot Executive, the
[0:58] Speaker 5: Computer War, tennis shoes.
[0:59] Speaker 4: Totally horse in the gray flannel.
[1:01] Speaker 2: Suit, another classic.
[1:02] Speaker 5: All absolutely, he had a ten year contract and so
[1:05] Speaker 5: they had become friends, but no one's really sure why
[1:09] Speaker 5: his last words were Kurt Russell.
[1:12] Speaker 2: I wonder if Kurt Russell knows this well.
[1:14] Speaker 5: They asked him and he was in twenty seventeen interview
[1:18] Speaker 5: with Hauvington Post.
[1:19] Speaker 4: All he had to say was, O, G, I.
[1:21] Speaker 5: Don't know what it's connected to, which makes me think
[1:24] Speaker 5: he does know what it's connected.
[1:26] Speaker 2: Kurt Russell knows where the bodies are buried. What's going on? Kurt?
[1:29] Speaker 5: Yeah, so that's his I mean, maybe he was I
[1:31] Speaker 5: don't know what he scribbled in the notebook. Maybe it
[1:33] Speaker 5: was brainstorminge.
[1:35] Speaker 2: He's like, we got to get Kurt Russell.
[1:37] Speaker 5: Russell's overboard goldie hawn.
[1:41] Speaker 4: So yeah, that's ridiculous, ridiculous to have Kurt Russell is
[1:48] Speaker 4: not standing over you.
[1:50] Speaker 2: He's not like Kurt Russell extreming exclamation point.
[1:54] Speaker 4: Wow, yeah wow.
[1:56] Speaker 2: I learned something new every day and today That's what.
[1:58] Speaker 5: I was a little worried that. I say, do you
[2:01] Speaker 5: know what Disney's last words were? Well, Disney's last words,
[2:03] Speaker 5: and you go, Kurt Russell.
[2:05] Speaker 2: Course, I've never heard that he did it. I got
[2:11] Speaker 2: one for you. I could go tip for tatt. Yeah, well, Elizabeth,
[2:14] Speaker 2: you know, we say here and we tell each other
[2:15] Speaker 2: these strange, elaborate stories on air. Tales are forgers, frauds,
[2:19] Speaker 2: art capers, bank robberies, jewelry heist and they all have
[2:21] Speaker 2: one thing in common. You know what that is, right,
[2:23] Speaker 2: ridiculous The purps get caught. Yeah, I got a hell
[2:29] Speaker 2: of a story for you. It's about a daring, outrageous heist.
[2:32] Speaker 2: It went well right right up until it went bad.
[2:35] Speaker 2: But the real fun part is how it went wrong
[2:38] Speaker 2: and why they got caught.
[2:39] Speaker 4: I love when things go wrong, right.
[2:41] Speaker 2: So you're ready for a tale of close but no cigar?
[2:44] Speaker 4: Yes? Please?
[3:05] Speaker 2: This is ridiculous crime a podcast and adam surd and
[3:09] Speaker 2: outrageous capers, heists and cons. It's always nine to nine
[3:14] Speaker 2: percent murder free and one hundred percent or ridiculous. Elizabeth
[3:21] Speaker 2: Theren do you know where the saying close but no
[3:24] Speaker 2: cigar comes from?
[3:25] Speaker 4: Close but no cigar?
[3:27] Speaker 2: I had to look this up.
[3:28] Speaker 4: Were you winning a cigar for something good?
[3:31] Speaker 3: Look at you?
[3:32] Speaker 2: It's a carnie term. It dates back to the early
[3:34] Speaker 2: decades of the last century. In the nineteen twenties, basically,
[3:36] Speaker 2: smoking was still a very popular habit and folks, you know,
[3:39] Speaker 2: they rolled their own smokes. They also bought the new
[3:41] Speaker 2: machine factured cigarettes. That was a big thing, right, but
[3:44] Speaker 2: they were also partially obs of pipes. But the big
[3:47] Speaker 2: deal was cigars. That was like, oh, this is a
[3:49] Speaker 2: fine coach cuban exactly right. So when folks would they
[3:53] Speaker 2: would stroll the midway at a fair or carnival and
[3:55] Speaker 2: they'd play the games of chance, often the prize was
[3:58] Speaker 2: a cigar. And as you know, the games of the
[4:00] Speaker 2: midway were always difficult to win because they're mostly rigged
[4:03] Speaker 2: not to be easy to win, but they still had
[4:05] Speaker 2: some small chance to win because you had to have
[4:07] Speaker 2: somebody win occasionally, right yeah, and you know not everyone
[4:10] Speaker 2: could be the sucker. But since someone had to win,
[4:13] Speaker 2: the cigars were for the rare winners. And so therefore
[4:16] Speaker 2: we have the common saying close but no cigar, and
[4:19] Speaker 2: then the.
[4:19] Speaker 4: Six year olds are like, exactly a big.
[4:22] Speaker 2: Curse, and then go back to their day job. Now
[4:24] Speaker 2: I have one less fun bit for you about close
[4:26] Speaker 2: but no cigar that I found while I was looking
[4:28] Speaker 2: up where this came from. Can you guess what popular
[4:31] Speaker 2: artists recorded a song with that very same title.
[4:34] Speaker 4: Close but no Cigar. I'll give you a head, yes please.
[4:37] Speaker 2: He's weird. Yes, I didn't even have to give you
[4:40] Speaker 2: the second hint.
[4:41] Speaker 4: Well it's weird.
[4:42] Speaker 2: Yeah, all right, so yes, weird. Al Yankovic the lyrics
[4:44] Speaker 2: to a song close but no Cigar are Well, they're
[4:47] Speaker 2: certifiably weird. They are. I looked at him and I
[4:49] Speaker 2: was like, wow, I've seen why. I've never heard of
[4:52] Speaker 2: this song, but I want to give you this a
[4:53] Speaker 2: taste of the lyrics.
[4:55] Speaker 4: Is it one of his parody songs?
[4:57] Speaker 2: I'll answer that in a second. Right, here's some lyrics.
[5:00] Speaker 2: Then I met sweet young Janet, prettiest thing on the planet,
[5:03] Speaker 2: had a body hotter than a hobbin yarrow. She had
[5:06] Speaker 2: lips like a right pomegranate, and I was crazy like
[5:10] Speaker 2: Manson about her. She got me all choked up like
[5:13] Speaker 2: Mama Cass. She had a smile so incredibly radiant you
[5:17] Speaker 2: had to watch it through a piece of smoked glass.
[5:19] Speaker 2: I thought, after all these years of searching around, I'd
[5:22] Speaker 2: found my soulmate finally. But one day I found out
[5:25] Speaker 2: she actually owned a copy of Joe Dirt on DVD.
[5:29] Speaker 2: Oh no, I said, Hey, are we lobbing handgard aids kiddo, No,
[5:33] Speaker 2: I don't think we are. You're close close, Oh so
[5:36] Speaker 2: very close. Close. Yeah, baby, you're close, close, so close,
[5:40] Speaker 2: But no cigar. So obviously that track was not one
[5:43] Speaker 2: of his more beloved heads. Yeah, not one of his knockoffs,
[5:46] Speaker 2: not a parody song. It's a weird awl original.
[5:48] Speaker 5: Oh yeah, and jac starts very like Fresh Prince.
[5:52] Speaker 2: Totally right. I mean I did the rhythm little different
[5:55] Speaker 2: the rhythm, but the uh I didn't put the tune
[5:57] Speaker 2: so much in the long range. Yeah, there you go,
[5:59] Speaker 2: and you can see why he sticks to knockoffs. Yeah,
[6:01] Speaker 2: because we can't all be Bob Dylan. But anyway, how
[6:04] Speaker 2: did this gang of criminals I'm about to tell you
[6:07] Speaker 2: get close? But no cigar? Great question, Elizabeth, thank you.
[6:11] Speaker 2: You ready to hear about the great Dunbar Armored Truck
[6:14] Speaker 2: heist of nineteen ninety seven.
[6:16] Speaker 4: I was born ready Now, this one goes down.
[6:19] Speaker 2: In my old city, Los Angeles. It features a crack
[6:22] Speaker 2: amateur heist team. So I loved all about the research
[6:25] Speaker 2: of this one. Yeah, there was the ring leader, this
[6:27] Speaker 2: cat named Alan paced the third shout out for the
[6:30] Speaker 2: Trips of the World. Now, originally he was from Compton.
[6:34] Speaker 2: He worked at the Dunbar Armored Truck facility in downtown LA.
[6:37] Speaker 2: That meant he knew obviously the routines of the place.
[6:40] Speaker 2: He knew the layout of the secure facility, he knew
[6:42] Speaker 2: the personnel. He basically was an insider. He also knew
[6:46] Speaker 2: the best day to hit his employer for a planned
[6:48] Speaker 2: inside job. But he also knew he couldn't do it alone.
[6:51] Speaker 2: So he decided, you know, if I'm going to pull
[6:54] Speaker 2: up this off, I need to make this work to
[6:55] Speaker 2: eat myself some millions as a big payback against my employer.
[6:59] Speaker 2: Who ooh, Elizabeth, can I bring in for my HEIGST team.
[7:02] Speaker 4: His best friends?
[7:04] Speaker 2: You're on plot.
[7:06] Speaker 4: I was one of the team.
[7:07] Speaker 2: I'm telling you.
[7:08] Speaker 4: I was on the Dunbar's incredible.
[7:10] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[7:10] Speaker 2: Yeah, I thought, are you gonna look for hard men
[7:12] Speaker 2: fresh out of the federal pen? No veteran bank robbers? No, No,
[7:16] Speaker 2: He's like, I want loyalty, trust men I know personally, men.
[7:19] Speaker 2: I can rely on men whose families I know their
[7:21] Speaker 2: home addresses. So he picked his childhood friends, which can
[7:26] Speaker 2: be a dicey proposition. Yeah, enter Freddie Lynn McCrary Junior,
[7:30] Speaker 2: Eugene Lamar Hill Junior, and Terry Wayne Brown Senior. There
[7:35] Speaker 2: were two other members of the height team who weren't
[7:36] Speaker 2: named after their fathers or named their sons after them.
[7:39] Speaker 2: The other two were Eric Damon Boyd and Thomas Lee.
[7:42] Speaker 2: Not r Thomas Lee who did our theme song with
[7:44] Speaker 2: your Brother Trap. His full name was Thomas Lee Johnson.
[7:48] Speaker 2: Now this is our crew, six men in total. Together
[7:50] Speaker 2: they plan to pull off one of the most successful
[7:53] Speaker 2: armored car heights in American history. Now, Alan Pace thirty
[7:56] Speaker 2: two years old at the time. Big dream of a
[7:59] Speaker 2: major heights for ay young man. He's ambitious, brimming with
[8:01] Speaker 2: over confidence, but he wasn't cocky, he wasn't sloppy. He
[8:05] Speaker 2: planned his robbery down to the finest detail. I mean
[8:08] Speaker 2: it was a beautifully simple plan, but just beautifully rot right.
[8:12] Speaker 2: It helped that he was the safety inspector at the
[8:14] Speaker 2: downtown La Dunbar Vault site. That meant he knew not
[8:17] Speaker 2: only the daily operations, he knew the building security protocols.
[8:20] Speaker 2: He knew the personnel their work schedules. He knew the
[8:22] Speaker 2: schedules of the armored card deliveries so when the money
[8:25] Speaker 2: was coming in and being delivered out. So he knew
[8:27] Speaker 2: basically how to pry open this secure facility like he
[8:30] Speaker 2: had a can opener yea. His plan though, was just
[8:32] Speaker 2: you know, as I said, simple break in scare the security,
[8:35] Speaker 2: and you know then since it Caldron scare tactics, He's like, Okay,
[8:39] Speaker 2: I don't want my fellow personnel at Dunbar to try
[8:41] Speaker 2: to play the hero. So I'm gonna need some heavy weaponry.
[8:43] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, because there are there arm guards. When they're
[8:45] Speaker 2: walking around the ball, they all got guns on him, right,
[8:47] Speaker 2: So he lines up some guns for the jobs. He's like, oh,
[8:50] Speaker 2: what am I gonna need? Oh you know, I'm gonna
[8:52] Speaker 2: need a sawed off shotgun. I'm gonna need some handguns.
[8:55] Speaker 2: So he goes picks those up off the street, not
[8:57] Speaker 2: like off the street street, but like some street buyer.
[9:00] Speaker 4: Doing like a street cleanup, and a little grabbersticks.
[9:03] Speaker 2: Like at the beach. Whead's like in tennis grenade. Perfect.
[9:06] Speaker 2: I could use this. So next he's like, okay, what
[9:08] Speaker 2: else do I need? We got to hide our faces,
[9:10] Speaker 2: so he goes out gets some ballaklava face mask aka
[9:13] Speaker 2: you know like black ski masks. Right. He also he's like,
[9:15] Speaker 2: we're gonna need to talk to each other in case
[9:16] Speaker 2: we get separated. Walkie talkie radio sets right away. Really
[9:21] Speaker 2: good communication's key. So after these initial supplies are set,
[9:24] Speaker 2: he starts going over the plan with his childhood friends
[9:27] Speaker 2: who he now brings in and they're like, oh word,
[9:29] Speaker 2: I'm down. I like this plan right, So together they
[9:33] Speaker 2: scope out the floor plans of the vault facility that
[9:35] Speaker 2: he draws up from memory. He drills this heist team
[9:38] Speaker 2: until they know the layout nearly as well as he did,
[9:40] Speaker 2: because you don't want to get lost in a place
[9:42] Speaker 2: like that when you're going a robbery in case anything
[9:44] Speaker 2: to go sideways, some guard surprises you. There's always you
[9:47] Speaker 2: know something. So once they had it all down, he's like, Okay,
[9:50] Speaker 2: now I'm going to show you guys the camera rotations
[9:52] Speaker 2: and the timing so we can walk through and they
[9:55] Speaker 2: sleep on this pace, and so they work out pass
[9:58] Speaker 2: so they can avoid any clear face shots. This guy
[10:00] Speaker 2: is meticulous right now. He also specified all the internal
[10:03] Speaker 2: doors they would need to encounter on the way to
[10:06] Speaker 2: the vault and on their way out for their escape plan.
[10:08] Speaker 2: I mean, it's just reading about it, I'm like, how
[10:10] Speaker 2: did this go wrong?
[10:12] Speaker 4: Well?
[10:12] Speaker 2: Now, Elizabeth, as you and I often talk about movies,
[10:16] Speaker 2: you know, when we're just hanging out, not doing the show.
[10:18] Speaker 2: And I often will cite the British commando from the
[10:20] Speaker 2: movie The Bridge on the River Kwai. He's got a
[10:22] Speaker 2: very famous saying there's always the unexpected, isn't there?
[10:25] Speaker 6: Right?
[10:25] Speaker 2: And that to me is a life mantra. I wish
[10:28] Speaker 2: these guys knew it.
[10:29] Speaker 4: Did these guys watch heat?
[10:31] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[10:31] Speaker 4: I mean that seems to be a commentation.
[10:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, Michael Mann movies are pretty much like, you know,
[10:35] Speaker 2: a graduate seminar on bank robbery for a lot of
[10:38] Speaker 2: these guys. But uh no, they didn't do that. But
[10:41] Speaker 2: they did. I said, perfect plan. Yeah, there's always the unexpected.
[10:45] Speaker 2: So what happened? What was the unexpected? Great question, Elizabeth,
[10:48] Speaker 2: way to have your head in this game. Now, in
[10:50] Speaker 2: this case, the unexpected was alan paced. The third was
[10:52] Speaker 2: fired the day before they're planned heist. Oh no, the
[10:56] Speaker 2: date was nine to eleven, but not nine to eleven
[10:57] Speaker 2: two thousand and one. It was nine to eleven nineteen
[10:59] Speaker 2: ninety seven, So it was like his personal nine to
[11:01] Speaker 2: eleven Carbinger. Yeah. So the story goes he was spotted
[11:04] Speaker 2: tampering with vehicles on the lot and apparently whatever he
[11:06] Speaker 2: was caught doing was bad enough. He was pretty much
[11:08] Speaker 2: fired on the spot. I couldn't get what it was tampering.
[11:11] Speaker 2: But yeah, so what did the heist crew do now
[11:13] Speaker 2: that he's no longer an employee?
[11:15] Speaker 4: Yeah, he can't get him in, and well of.
[11:16] Speaker 2: Course they go for it anyway, right, I mean can't
[11:19] Speaker 2: perfect planning, what are you gonna do? Yeah, and plus
[11:22] Speaker 2: there's the millions and millions just whispering their name, Come
[11:25] Speaker 2: get us. So the heist is planned for a Friday.
[11:27] Speaker 2: The reason is simple because Fridays is when the Dunbar
[11:30] Speaker 2: vault is holding the most cash. Okay, And not only that,
[11:33] Speaker 2: but on Friday nights, the vault stays open like because
[11:36] Speaker 2: they have all these late night deliveries, so it stays
[11:38] Speaker 2: open till like midnight. And that was dude also, as
[11:41] Speaker 2: I said, the deliveries, but the staff would be working
[11:43] Speaker 2: till like twelve thirty often on a Friday night because
[11:46] Speaker 2: back then the banks would close and this was the
[11:48] Speaker 2: last opportunity to get the last money's in. Right, So
[11:51] Speaker 2: this place it keeps huge stores of cash, right. And
[11:54] Speaker 2: they also on Friday they bring in a couple extra
[11:56] Speaker 2: security guards, which he's well aware about. So they got
[12:00] Speaker 2: the extra security this place, they feel like, oh, we're good,
[12:02] Speaker 2: we're safe. But no, Alan paced third, he knows all
[12:06] Speaker 2: about that, and he's got a plan for it. So
[12:08] Speaker 2: this is where the guns come in, right, and the
[12:10] Speaker 2: well trained heist team. Now, even though you've been fired
[12:13] Speaker 2: one day before, they're planned heist.
[12:15] Speaker 4: I just I can't get my head around getting fired
[12:18] Speaker 4: the day before. You're big production.
[12:20] Speaker 2: You might think like this is a sign, but not him.
[12:22] Speaker 5: Well, and also maybe like play it straight, like what
[12:24] Speaker 5: are you tampering with?
[12:26] Speaker 4: What are you tinkering around?
[12:28] Speaker 2: Like just be cool now you're under suspicion. But apparently
[12:31] Speaker 2: this company was not the best at firing employees because
[12:34] Speaker 2: he still had keys to all the buildings tours. They
[12:37] Speaker 2: didn't come in to take the keys when he got
[12:39] Speaker 2: fired all.
[12:40] Speaker 5: The companies, right, you know, I've worked in places where
[12:43] Speaker 5: we're not doing anything you know, worthwhile. But you have
[12:47] Speaker 5: like nine factor authentication to get into things, and you
[12:50] Speaker 5: have pass codes.
[12:52] Speaker 2: And new security walking out to the door with a
[12:53] Speaker 2: box with a plant and and all your stuff.
[12:55] Speaker 4: But this guy, so he's.
[12:57] Speaker 2: Got the keys, he decides we're going for it.
[13:00] Speaker 4: Can I just have like a couple more days, you guys, exactly.
[13:03] Speaker 2: I just I don't know which key. Let me separate.
[13:05] Speaker 2: My wife's got my house keys. I need to make copies.
[13:08] Speaker 2: I don't know what the deal was. Read. So the
[13:11] Speaker 2: sun rises over LA on the big day Friday, his
[13:14] Speaker 2: heist team they go over their plan one last time.
[13:17] Speaker 2: They wait for evening because that's when they're going to strike.
[13:19] Speaker 2: The sun finally sets and descends into the Pacific night
[13:23] Speaker 2: descends over La. It's go time, right the heist team. Now,
[13:26] Speaker 2: they didn't drive directly to their target. Instead, the heist
[13:29] Speaker 2: plan called for them to go to a very strange place.
[13:32] Speaker 2: I don't want to take a guess where that strange
[13:34] Speaker 2: place was. I don't think you'll guess it. But no
[13:36] Speaker 2: ice team's opening move was to hit up a late
[13:38] Speaker 2: LA house party, like a nineties LA house party. They're like, yeah,
[13:41] Speaker 2: I was just hit up a house party before the
[13:45] Speaker 2: pre party, before the heist, Like, was this one last
[13:49] Speaker 2: blowout in case they got caught? Maybe it was far
[13:52] Speaker 2: more strategic than that. They planned to hit up this
[13:54] Speaker 2: house party, and so when they dip out to go
[13:57] Speaker 2: hit this house party, the reason was that was their alibi.
[14:03] Speaker 5: I see, I thought maybe they before they planned the
[14:06] Speaker 5: high state already RSV.
[14:08] Speaker 2: We can't get out of it? Want to last time?
[14:11] Speaker 6: Right?
[14:12] Speaker 2: No, the idea was Allen Pace the third is band
[14:14] Speaker 2: of rogue robbers. Thought we're gonna go hit up a
[14:16] Speaker 2: house party and down in Long Beach. Then we'll sneak
[14:19] Speaker 2: out and then we'll go do the heist, and then
[14:21] Speaker 2: we'll go back to the house party and we'll establish
[14:23] Speaker 2: that we couldn't have been in downtown l A. We've
[14:25] Speaker 2: been in Long Beach.
[14:26] Speaker 4: Yeah, where were you guys for those couple hours in
[14:28] Speaker 4: the We're you.
[14:29] Speaker 2: Know, hanging out with Derek and Bob. Is cool?
[14:32] Speaker 4: Separating out the cans from the garbage. Some of us
[14:35] Speaker 4: care about the environment.
[14:36] Speaker 2: Nineteen ninety seven. We're all captain planet over here now. Personally,
[14:40] Speaker 2: I dug the idea. I thought it was kind of
[14:41] Speaker 2: smart move on the surface. I mean, especially if it's
[14:43] Speaker 2: like a huge house party.
[14:45] Speaker 4: That's the thing you got to You got to make
[14:46] Speaker 4: it big enough, not just like four dudes playing.
[14:48] Speaker 2: Yeah, no, it was like a big house party, like
[14:50] Speaker 2: imagining like maybe a band played, or like there was like.
[14:53] Speaker 4: We're kidn't play there.
[14:54] Speaker 2: That's a good call. Great, I didn't. I did never
[14:57] Speaker 2: find that out. But uh. Also, by the way, now
[15:00] Speaker 2: you'd have an alibi of like tens, if not possibly
[15:02] Speaker 2: hundreds of people. That's a pretty strong alibi.
[15:04] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[15:05] Speaker 2: Yeah, So quick question, did their house party alibi work?
[15:09] Speaker 4: No?
[15:10] Speaker 2: Uh, I'll tell you after this little break, I'll tell
[15:14] Speaker 2: you if their plan worked out or not. And also
[15:16] Speaker 2: rather the specific part of their plan worked out. But first,
[15:18] Speaker 2: let's dig into some ads. Back dig it two.
[15:21] Speaker 3: And two.
[15:40] Speaker 2: Elizabeth, We're need to get to the heuston.
[15:44] Speaker 4: Yes, please.
[15:44] Speaker 2: So it's September twelfth, nineteen ninety seven, the big day,
[15:47] Speaker 2: the day after Alan Pace was fired for damparym vehicles,
[15:51] Speaker 2: and he says, how did the hell with it? We're
[15:52] Speaker 2: going for it and getting my personal revenge. Now rob
[15:54] Speaker 2: the hell out of my old employer. So the crew
[15:56] Speaker 2: that hit up the Long Beach house party, they make
[15:58] Speaker 2: the scene. They're looking clean, they make sure everyone sees them.
[16:01] Speaker 2: They circulate the mixing feel like.
[16:03] Speaker 5: A dance routine in the middle of the room.
[16:07] Speaker 4: Well there it is, and like, you guys are so good,
[16:09] Speaker 4: Like I know, I'll be out back.
[16:10] Speaker 2: I'm gonna go hang out because so and so is rolling.
[16:13] Speaker 2: Now they stablished the alby right, so sometime around midnight,
[16:17] Speaker 2: they bounce out. They're like, okay, we gotta get there
[16:19] Speaker 2: before they close up. They race up from Long Beach,
[16:22] Speaker 2: they sneak away from the party, head out for their
[16:24] Speaker 2: heightst Now what follows I'm about to tell you These
[16:26] Speaker 2: are all details from eyewitnesses to the robbery. Okay gave
[16:30] Speaker 2: sworn testimony to the FBI. According to the FBI's investigation
[16:33] Speaker 2: and witness statements, we know that the staff working at
[16:36] Speaker 2: the Dunbar vault facility was about to close up shop
[16:39] Speaker 2: after midnight Fridays. As they told you, it's common for
[16:42] Speaker 2: them to finish around twelve thirty, which so now I
[16:44] Speaker 2: guess early Saturday morning, So technically the folks work in
[16:48] Speaker 2: the late shift. They were at this point waiting for
[16:50] Speaker 2: a computer print out of all the days deposits and deliveries.
[16:53] Speaker 2: So they're all just kind of like milling about, going
[16:54] Speaker 2: to the break room, going to the bathroom, taking a smoke,
[16:57] Speaker 2: break the top exactly. And at this point there are
[17:00] Speaker 2: security guards in the vault area who are just like
[17:02] Speaker 2: holding it down because they still have tons of cash,
[17:05] Speaker 2: like millions. Yeah, so when one of the Dumbbar employees
[17:08] Speaker 2: dips out to hit the brake room, he runs into
[17:10] Speaker 2: four men who are not supposed to be there. Man,
[17:12] Speaker 2: they're all wearing ski masks and holding quote, stainless steel
[17:16] Speaker 2: semi automatic pistols. That's not right now. This guy's also armed.
[17:20] Speaker 2: But there's four of them, and he's like, I'm not
[17:22] Speaker 2: gonna pull on them. And also I should point out
[17:24] Speaker 2: they weren't stainless steel, like you know kitchen appliances.
[17:27] Speaker 4: Well, I wonder they have to get those special wipes
[17:29] Speaker 4: to clean them.
[17:30] Speaker 2: The person eyewitness didn't know it.
[17:34] Speaker 4: Was a stainless steel ratchet. Yeah, a ratchet.
[17:37] Speaker 2: Shoot, yeah, you popped the gun with the ratchets. So
[17:40] Speaker 2: one of the high screens, he tells his unlucky, dumbbar employee,
[17:43] Speaker 2: be quiet, don't do anything stupid. Get on the ground right.
[17:45] Speaker 4: I would just peel myself at this point. I let's
[17:48] Speaker 4: be real. Yeah, I mean, like you're in a vault
[17:52] Speaker 4: with millions, You're on.
[17:53] Speaker 2: The way to the bathroom, just like minding, your.
[17:55] Speaker 5: Already have to do exactly, you already have to go.
[17:57] Speaker 5: And then four that's when either like you never he
[18:00] Speaker 5: again or you just flood it.
[18:02] Speaker 2: Right here, I think flooded.
[18:04] Speaker 4: I'm just going to keep fixating on the air.
[18:06] Speaker 2: So they he gets forced to the floor, does not
[18:08] Speaker 2: wet himself. His weapon is taken from him. Again, he
[18:11] Speaker 2: probably did not. He's just now a big salt lick.
[18:13] Speaker 2: So the Highest crew asks him how many people are
[18:15] Speaker 2: in the facility? Right, he answers, He tells him to honestly.
[18:18] Speaker 2: Satisfied by this, one of the crew is like, okay,
[18:20] Speaker 2: probably the ring leader Alan Pace. He's like, tie him up,
[18:23] Speaker 2: and the crew does instruct it. Now I say tie
[18:25] Speaker 2: him up, but actually they duct taped him. They duct
[18:27] Speaker 2: taped his hands together and his feet together, so he's
[18:29] Speaker 2: now like in the prone like fetal position.
[18:32] Speaker 5: So when the guy before they put it over his mouth,
[18:34] Speaker 5: he's like, well, actually you didn't tie me up, you taped.
[18:38] Speaker 2: Funny that you mentioned that they were supposed to tape
[18:40] Speaker 2: his mouth and they've forgot to do it. They're like,
[18:42] Speaker 2: he won't scream, so full of exactly mouthful hearing, They
[18:47] Speaker 2: rifle through the dude's pockets, they take his keys, and
[18:49] Speaker 2: then they drag him to the ladies room and just
[18:50] Speaker 2: leave him there. Right at this point, now they've got
[18:52] Speaker 2: three security guards. So the high crew they make one
[18:55] Speaker 2: early mistake. They take the guard's keys, but they don't
[18:57] Speaker 2: ask him which keys go to which doors to take
[19:00] Speaker 2: the keys. This matters because when the FBI later hears
[19:03] Speaker 2: about this, they're like, hmm, that sounds like an inside job.
[19:06] Speaker 2: So right away they should have been a little bit
[19:08] Speaker 2: more dedicated the idea of we're robbers as opposed to
[19:10] Speaker 2: we've got a great plan, we know everything. Anyway, Next,
[19:13] Speaker 2: one of the dunbar guards heads to the break room
[19:16] Speaker 2: and promptly runs into the same Ice crew and seeing
[19:19] Speaker 2: the r men, he's like, please don't hurt me. These
[19:21] Speaker 2: their only job is being security guards. And each one
[19:23] Speaker 2: of them went faced with somebody there.
[19:25] Speaker 4: It's like four against one.
[19:27] Speaker 2: Don't even draw their weapons.
[19:28] Speaker 5: They then this guy's hungry waiting for the print out.
[19:32] Speaker 2: It's like a laser dot printer. It's like, come on,
[19:35] Speaker 2: so they are men. They say, okay, man, we won't
[19:36] Speaker 2: hurt you. Get down on the ground. He does. Second
[19:38] Speaker 2: guard bound with duct tape. He's also stuffed in the
[19:41] Speaker 2: ladies room with the first guard. Now the Ice crew
[19:44] Speaker 2: changes their mind about this bathroom stash spot. They double back,
[19:47] Speaker 2: they pull them back out and they put them in
[19:48] Speaker 2: an adjacent office. Oh, one of the high crew then
[19:51] Speaker 2: stays with them to babysit him. He's like, we probably
[19:53] Speaker 2: should you know, there's two of them, they might work
[19:56] Speaker 2: together to pull the tape off or something. So he
[19:58] Speaker 2: uses his walkie talkie to keep me municate with the
[20:00] Speaker 2: others as they're moving deeper into the facility, headed for
[20:03] Speaker 2: the vault. This leaves now at this point, we have
[20:07] Speaker 2: the four guards in the vault and then these two
[20:09] Speaker 2: guys who've been taken or are just like normal ancillary guards. Yeah,
[20:12] Speaker 2: and there's possibly like maybe a secretary out there. They
[20:14] Speaker 2: don't know exactly, but they're feeling pretty good so far,
[20:17] Speaker 2: no sweat, everything's going according to plan. Yeah, ice crew
[20:20] Speaker 2: is able to surprise the remaining guards in the vault.
[20:22] Speaker 2: They subdue them, duck, take them, take their weapons. It's
[20:26] Speaker 2: four on four. None of them draw, so it's like,
[20:28] Speaker 2: what's going on? Are these guys really guards?
[20:31] Speaker 4: Like, did they recognize him?
[20:34] Speaker 7: They're wearing the ski masks, so that'd be you now
[20:40] Speaker 7: left bound on the floor, The guards listen as this
[20:42] Speaker 7: high crew begins to make all kinds of noise, like
[20:44] Speaker 7: in the vault and in other places that they can hear,
[20:46] Speaker 7: like on the sides of walls, not like explosions, more
[20:49] Speaker 7: like say, like.
[20:49] Speaker 2: Filing cabinets being pushed over and rifled through like this
[20:52] Speaker 2: strange sound, and then like the wheels going oh, they're
[20:56] Speaker 2: pushing things around. The think gets quiet until they hear
[20:59] Speaker 2: a diesel truck backing up and then boom, it hits
[21:02] Speaker 2: the loading dock. They're like, okay, I think I know
[21:04] Speaker 2: what's going on, right, and guards assume this is just
[21:06] Speaker 2: be how they plan to load the cash they're going
[21:08] Speaker 2: to steal from the vault, which is correct. Ice team
[21:11] Speaker 2: loads three large storage containers of cash, like those kinds
[21:15] Speaker 2: that are on wheels. They have no way, yeah, like
[21:17] Speaker 2: you can put millions in these, right, So they decide
[21:20] Speaker 2: it's gonna be a good haul for us, and they're
[21:22] Speaker 2: all ready to bounce after they got the three loaded up.
[21:24] Speaker 2: So the ice crew returns and they tell the bound guards,
[21:27] Speaker 2: you guys, wait twenty minutes before you do anything, and
[21:30] Speaker 2: then everything would be cool. And then they disappear. Instead
[21:35] Speaker 2: of waiting twenty minutes, the guards wait five.
[21:37] Speaker 4: They're like that's good Enough's see exactly enough forgot.
[21:41] Speaker 2: Right, So they work their way out of the duct tape.
[21:43] Speaker 2: They retrieve their weapons, and they go and they find
[21:45] Speaker 2: the other guards who are tied up in the vault.
[21:46] Speaker 2: So the first two guards are the ones who free themselves.
[21:48] Speaker 2: Then they go find the other four, they free them
[21:51] Speaker 2: somebody phones nine to one one. Then the guards all
[21:53] Speaker 2: lock themselves in the vault, which I guess is the protocol,
[21:55] Speaker 2: and they wait for the police to arrive.
[21:57] Speaker 4: This is really traumatic for them. And forget it's like
[22:00] Speaker 4: mid September ninety seven. Princess Diana has only been dead
[22:04] Speaker 4: for like two Oh.
[22:05] Speaker 2: I'm sure they're all still grieving and they're now going
[22:07] Speaker 2: to have to get back in the job market.
[22:09] Speaker 4: How how are they going to survive this? And one
[22:12] Speaker 4: of them will never.
[22:13] Speaker 2: Be exactly this is difficult. You never see the trauma coming.
[22:17] Speaker 2: The cops arrive, the guards tell the cops what little
[22:19] Speaker 2: they know. They're like, made some weird sounds. We heard
[22:21] Speaker 2: the wheels, there was a diesel truck boom hit the thing,
[22:23] Speaker 2: the loading dog the report you know. Also, yeah, they
[22:25] Speaker 2: were wearing black ski masks, and then they had black voices,
[22:29] Speaker 2: and then yeah, so that's what they said.
[22:31] Speaker 4: Black voices is like like a selection on a streaming the.
[22:35] Speaker 2: Way listened to black voices?
[22:37] Speaker 4: What films. Do you want to watch, Let's check the
[22:40] Speaker 4: black voices section.
[22:43] Speaker 2: So the men go on. By the way, they also
[22:45] Speaker 2: pull like a whole like Tarantina thing where they don't
[22:47] Speaker 2: refer to each other by names. Instead they refer to
[22:49] Speaker 2: each other by pre assigned numbers. So the cops.
[22:54] Speaker 4: Right, but like, were they all prime numbers?
[22:56] Speaker 2: No, I would have loved that. So one of the
[22:58] Speaker 2: security guards tells the cops he not he recognized one
[23:01] Speaker 2: of the voices. It's a guy who works or rather
[23:03] Speaker 2: worked at Dunbar until one day before.
[23:06] Speaker 5: This man did not even try. I mean, you're in
[23:09] Speaker 5: a costume, basically, just give the.
[23:12] Speaker 2: Character do Batman voice, you know, come on?
[23:16] Speaker 5: Yeah, what is nice and squeaky that that hurts less
[23:20] Speaker 5: than the gravelly for me?
[23:21] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's probably true.
[23:23] Speaker 4: So I would be inclinient your Mickey Mouse.
[23:25] Speaker 2: You got robbed by Mickey Mouse with like.
[23:27] Speaker 4: A really offensive accent.
[23:29] Speaker 2: And they don't make him applicated.
[23:30] Speaker 4: Well, I don't want to replicate your offensive sounds racist. Yeah, Well,
[23:35] Speaker 4: for whatever group you choose.
[23:37] Speaker 2: Was the nineties, people are a lot more politically corrected
[23:39] Speaker 2: at the point.
[23:39] Speaker 4: That's true.
[23:40] Speaker 2: So the police at this point they investigate the crime scene, right,
[23:43] Speaker 2: because they get called in and they figure out that
[23:44] Speaker 2: this the five man hight crew that was inside that
[23:47] Speaker 2: they can count, according to the other guards, has gotten
[23:50] Speaker 2: away with millions in US currency. And because they wheeled
[23:53] Speaker 2: out the three large storage containers loaded with all large
[23:56] Speaker 2: denominations of cash, they all picked one, hundreds and twenties
[23:59] Speaker 2: and fives for them, So.
[24:00] Speaker 4: They load up although it's harder to move.
[24:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, well it depends on how you're moving in.
[24:04] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[24:05] Speaker 2: They load them up in the diesel truck and then
[24:06] Speaker 2: drove off with their stolen booty. They left me out
[24:08] Speaker 2: almost zero clues to their identities zero Elizabeth, yeah, zero
[24:13] Speaker 2: zero seal Now, other than the possibility inside job voice
[24:17] Speaker 2: yeah by the guy who got fired the day before,
[24:19] Speaker 2: the LAPD and later the FBI have very few clues
[24:22] Speaker 2: to go on, Like, don't you hate it when that happens.
[24:24] Speaker 4: It's so frustrating. Happened to be like three.
[24:27] Speaker 2: Times since it was suspected to be an inside job.
[24:30] Speaker 2: All of the dunbar employees working that night. Before they leave,
[24:32] Speaker 2: they get questioned and subjected to like light detector test.
[24:35] Speaker 4: Oh my god, you've been on the clone.
[24:38] Speaker 2: To go home right now, they're doing a polygraph test.
[24:41] Speaker 4: But do they get over time for that?
[24:42] Speaker 2: No, I don't think so. But they all passed the test,
[24:44] Speaker 2: so they got cleared by the FBI and the LAPD.
[24:47] Speaker 2: So FBI is now back to square one. They have
[24:49] Speaker 2: only one good lead on a suspect black voice, possibly
[24:52] Speaker 2: the guy who worked here until he got fired. They
[24:55] Speaker 2: have a few other clues. I should sorry, I should
[24:56] Speaker 2: have mentioned one. As I said, the robbers sounded black,
[24:59] Speaker 2: so they're possible black people. Also, they look to be
[25:01] Speaker 2: black based on the Cheshanks or chet Haanks good call
[25:05] Speaker 2: now based on the color of their skin around the eyes,
[25:07] Speaker 2: which was exposed by the ski masks.
[25:09] Speaker 4: That'll tell you.
[25:10] Speaker 2: Yeah. But you know, I've often thought about this. A
[25:12] Speaker 2: little makeup, the skin part could easily be faked.
[25:15] Speaker 4: Very right.
[25:15] Speaker 2: That's what I would do if I was gonna rob someone,
[25:17] Speaker 2: I would.
[25:17] Speaker 4: I would have really bad em.
[25:20] Speaker 2: They're worried about you, and then one.
[25:22] Speaker 5: Cloudy eye and they're just like, oh buddy, They're looking
[25:26] Speaker 5: for a very particular person.
[25:28] Speaker 2: And to your point about che Hanks as far as
[25:30] Speaker 2: sounding black, I mean that's subjective. I mean Bob Jobby
[25:32] Speaker 2: called well and Michael McDonald both sounded black when they sang.
[25:35] Speaker 2: I mean, so really, what does it mean to sound
[25:38] Speaker 2: black at this point? So, so the real clue the
[25:41] Speaker 2: FBI and LAPD have to go on is not much
[25:44] Speaker 2: other than possibly it was that one guy got fired.
[25:47] Speaker 4: Yeah, but is that just because he's on their mind?
[25:50] Speaker 4: They missed him so much.
[25:51] Speaker 2: That's a good point, like they.
[25:52] Speaker 4: Missed Princess Diana.
[25:56] Speaker 2: Also, there was the keys. I forgot about that they
[25:59] Speaker 2: asked for the keys, and even more strangely, the purpse
[26:01] Speaker 2: fled in one of the employees' cars after taking his keys,
[26:04] Speaker 2: like he always the car. Yeah, but they and also
[26:08] Speaker 2: they didn't ask which keys go to which car?
[26:11] Speaker 5: But yeah, they were just like I'll just take this
[26:14] Speaker 5: forward tourists out here, Oh I happen to be holding
[26:16] Speaker 5: the keys.
[26:17] Speaker 2: But also, I mean, only so many employees working that night,
[26:19] Speaker 2: It's not like the lot was full of cars. How
[26:20] Speaker 2: long would it take to try the keys?
[26:22] Speaker 4: And you just look at it and hit the Yeah.
[26:27] Speaker 2: The Selen car keys. That wasn't really conclusive proof.
[26:30] Speaker 5: It was in its grab the keys and be like,
[26:32] Speaker 5: oh my gosh, there's so many keys, How will I
[26:34] Speaker 5: ever figure out which one.
[26:36] Speaker 4: As you want?
[26:37] Speaker 2: Buttering and frustrated. Yeah yeah, so all these going on,
[26:39] Speaker 2: all they have is basically circumstantial evidence, and so this
[26:43] Speaker 2: perfectly planned and executed heist looks like it's gone off
[26:46] Speaker 2: just brilliantly. No alarms were triggered, no cameras worked to
[26:48] Speaker 2: capture anything. They got all big denomination money wheeled right
[26:52] Speaker 2: out of the vault area, loaded up, quick escape. I mean,
[26:55] Speaker 2: high screw is gone. It's just incredible all by the way,
[26:57] Speaker 2: I know you like this.
[26:58] Speaker 5: No one got hurt, who I love, except for the
[27:01] Speaker 5: guy whood Again.
[27:03] Speaker 2: So they also took the security camera footage with them.
[27:06] Speaker 2: They went and they took all the vhs.
[27:07] Speaker 4: Oh so you can't even look and see like how tall?
[27:10] Speaker 2: Nothing, So they were smart about that too. The only
[27:13] Speaker 2: piece of hard evidence left behind by the heist crew
[27:16] Speaker 2: was a tail light cover that was knocked off when
[27:19] Speaker 2: the truck backed into the loading dock. They broke a
[27:21] Speaker 2: tail light and a piece of plastic came off. This
[27:24] Speaker 2: is the only hard evidence they have. So how can
[27:27] Speaker 2: they possibly solve a crime with just a piece of
[27:30] Speaker 2: red plastic? Reddit, Yeah, I know Reddit could, but these
[27:33] Speaker 2: are a lapd let's chock. At this point, it sure
[27:35] Speaker 2: looks like the high Cres stolen nineteen million dollars and
[27:39] Speaker 2: disappeared into thin air, leaving nia clue behind.
[27:42] Speaker 4: Nineteen million and in nineteen ninety.
[27:44] Speaker 2: Seven, Yeah, a lot more value than So what do
[27:47] Speaker 2: you think, Elizabeth, do you think that this one clue
[27:49] Speaker 2: that is all they needed to bust this crew?
[27:52] Speaker 3: Yeah?
[27:53] Speaker 4: You know, if you've got someone in the motor pool
[27:55] Speaker 4: in LAPG who's just like on it, hammering down Megan
[27:59] Speaker 4: Mega Carnard.
[28:00] Speaker 2: Oh, I recognized that also, the FBI forensics team is
[28:03] Speaker 2: going to get involved to Yeah.
[28:04] Speaker 6: That's true, the exactly So, I'll just cut to the chase.
[28:08] Speaker 2: It was not enough for them to break the case. Nice,
[28:11] Speaker 2: What about the employee who had been fired the day before?
[28:13] Speaker 2: Was that clue the one that the FBI needed to break.
[28:16] Speaker 4: The case exactly?
[28:19] Speaker 2: Again, No, it wasn't. As far as the FBI could tell.
[28:21] Speaker 2: The high Screw pulled off a damn near perfect hes
[28:24] Speaker 2: and gotten away with a clean, cool nineteen mil.
[28:26] Speaker 4: I am so frustrated that I'm going to find out
[28:30] Speaker 4: what the problem, like, how they blew it?
[28:33] Speaker 2: You're gonna love it. So what about the party plan?
[28:36] Speaker 2: Did it work to establish their alibi when they went
[28:38] Speaker 2: to check on Allen pace the third they're like, oh, yeah,
[28:40] Speaker 2: go check my alibi at the house party.
[28:42] Speaker 4: Yeah, they were sipping on gin and right.
[28:45] Speaker 2: Well, apparently they did check and his alibi was sworn out.
[28:48] Speaker 2: People like, oh, yeah, he was here at the house party.
[28:50] Speaker 2: And then I saw him again late night at like
[28:51] Speaker 2: one am we were doing the dozens.
[28:53] Speaker 4: That's a really good That is actually a good thing
[28:55] Speaker 4: because people.
[28:56] Speaker 5: That have had a little bit of dress substance exactly,
[29:00] Speaker 5: he memory is not good for the memory.
[29:01] Speaker 4: And they're also not going to want to be like, well,
[29:03] Speaker 4: I don't know there are four hours in the county.
[29:05] Speaker 2: Because they drove to a house, changed clothes, back into
[29:08] Speaker 2: their clothes, and went right back to the house party
[29:09] Speaker 2: in Long Beach and like celebrated, and you knew they
[29:12] Speaker 2: got a lot to celebrate, and once they re established themselves,
[29:15] Speaker 2: it seemed like they've been at the party all night.
[29:17] Speaker 4: So yeah, they pulled up in a giant exactly.
[29:20] Speaker 2: With a missing tail light. So what gifts? How did
[29:22] Speaker 2: they end up on this show? Did they break the
[29:25] Speaker 2: basic rule of a heist and start buying all kinds
[29:27] Speaker 2: of extravagant gifts and lavishing themselves with the finer things
[29:31] Speaker 2: in life, getting a oh yeah, no pink Cadillacs for them.
[29:34] Speaker 2: They didn't spend a dime of the money for like
[29:37] Speaker 2: six months. Yeah, this tist crew, amateurs acting like pros.
[29:41] Speaker 4: Yeah, so what.
[29:42] Speaker 2: Happened, Elizabeth?
[29:43] Speaker 6: I know.
[29:46] Speaker 2: The crew was so disciplined. They had an exit plan,
[29:48] Speaker 2: you know, I'm always talking about that, even had a
[29:50] Speaker 2: plan to launder the cash. Wow, there's six month cooling
[29:54] Speaker 2: off period. They put the next part of their plan
[29:56] Speaker 2: into action. They went and they hired themselves with local
[29:59] Speaker 2: immigration lawyer and they offered him and his assistant a
[30:02] Speaker 2: million dollars each if they would help launder the stolen money.
[30:06] Speaker 2: The lawyer heard that, it was like, yeah, let's do this.
[30:08] Speaker 2: So he didn't get I don't know, yeah immigrant, I
[30:12] Speaker 2: just know he's a immigration lawyer. His name is David Matsumoto,
[30:15] Speaker 2: and his assistant was his cat named Joaquin bin Now together, No,
[30:19] Speaker 2: they hired them. They picked him out like yeah, like
[30:22] Speaker 2: I hear, you're kind of dirty, Like I don't know,
[30:25] Speaker 2: I don't know how he's recommended. So the high screw
[30:27] Speaker 2: the immigration lawyer and his assistant they work out this
[30:29] Speaker 2: complicated scheme to launder the stolen cash. They planned to
[30:32] Speaker 2: create a false paper trail of W two tax forms
[30:35] Speaker 2: that show that the members of the High Screw are
[30:38] Speaker 2: earning this money as wages. Right, So the immigration lawyer
[30:41] Speaker 2: creates this byzantine paper trail, right, involving shell companies, front
[30:44] Speaker 2: companies that all have obscuring the ownership. And to effect
[30:48] Speaker 2: that pace, he creates a company of his own called
[30:50] Speaker 2: Extreme Entertainment. It was a party rental supply company, and
[30:56] Speaker 2: that meant they could buy cars and jet skis and
[30:58] Speaker 2: then be able to use them for themselves beause it's
[31:00] Speaker 2: part of Extreme Entertainment's holdings. So that's how they can
[31:03] Speaker 2: get around the pink Cadillac temptation.
[31:05] Speaker 4: Yeah yeah.
[31:06] Speaker 2: Using this companys cover, the immigration lawyer is able to then,
[31:08] Speaker 2: you know, help them purchase their cars and their toys
[31:11] Speaker 2: and then also pay them through the W two's And
[31:14] Speaker 2: then also they decide, okay, we have more money we
[31:16] Speaker 2: need to get rid of. He's like, okay, well, what
[31:17] Speaker 2: do you want to do is real estate. It's a
[31:19] Speaker 2: great way to wash cash. So they go on a
[31:21] Speaker 2: spending spree, buying through their front companies real estate. Immigration
[31:25] Speaker 2: lawyer Matsumoto and the high screw. They work this money
[31:28] Speaker 2: laundering scheme for two years, flying below the radar because
[31:31] Speaker 2: there's all sorts of hanky stuff in LA. When it
[31:33] Speaker 2: comes to front, I.
[31:34] Speaker 4: Would have I would have gotten a small business loan
[31:36] Speaker 4: and bought a car wash. That's a good one, and
[31:39] Speaker 4: then you know no one ever goes there, or like
[31:41] Speaker 4: he's kind of just in the neighborhood.
[31:44] Speaker 2: Go for free, Go for free. You always have a.
[31:46] Speaker 5: Line, launder all the money, and then you get the
[31:48] Speaker 5: W two's out of the plus you've got the cover
[31:50] Speaker 5: of I had to take over.
[31:51] Speaker 2: But that's that's kind of like a classic mafia and
[31:53] Speaker 2: movie mafia move, So I think the FBI might have
[31:57] Speaker 2: noticed that. But nobody does extreme entertainment to hide their robbery.
[32:00] Speaker 2: So it just seemed like some more hinky LA stuff.
[32:03] Speaker 4: And like that's the era of like extreme extreme.
[32:06] Speaker 2: Everything, like Colgan with a black mustache. Now everything's going
[32:09] Speaker 2: so damn well. They plotted this perfect hest, they pulled
[32:12] Speaker 2: off the perfect hes. They'd washed their money perfectly for
[32:15] Speaker 2: two years. So again I asked, what the hell happened
[32:18] Speaker 2: that led to them getting the star treatment of ridiculous.
[32:21] Speaker 4: I don't trust the attorney's assistant.
[32:24] Speaker 2: Well, it's a good one. That's a good suspicion. Well,
[32:26] Speaker 2: to their credit, the LAPD and the FBI never gave
[32:28] Speaker 2: up on cracking this case, which would have been understandable
[32:31] Speaker 2: if they did sort of move on because they're really busy.
[32:33] Speaker 4: But yeah, but that's a huge amount of.
[32:35] Speaker 2: Totally Also it's a huge embarrassment for them. Is one
[32:37] Speaker 2: of the most successful heists, so it's like, oh, top
[32:40] Speaker 2: of the list, but even eventually it turns into a
[32:42] Speaker 2: cold case. Right after two a couple of years, the
[32:45] Speaker 2: trouble for the FEDS was the Dunbar robbery, once again,
[32:47] Speaker 2: as I said, the most successful armored car heist in
[32:49] Speaker 2: America at the time, which meant the FBI still is like,
[32:52] Speaker 2: we can't ever really stop. So it wasn't really cold,
[32:54] Speaker 2: it's more like a warm case. Sure, it's over the years,
[32:57] Speaker 2: their chief suspect, Alan Pace, he gets interviewed, questioned by
[33:00] Speaker 2: the FBI multiple times. They just stopped by every so
[33:03] Speaker 2: often questioned him, see if they get him to break Nope, Yeah,
[33:05] Speaker 2: Now he's the obvious choice, is the possible insider, and
[33:08] Speaker 2: they just keep working him. But he never flinches in
[33:11] Speaker 2: the face of this pressure. He never breaks. He's always like,
[33:13] Speaker 2: why are you guys bothering me? Right? The trouble for
[33:16] Speaker 2: the FEDS was, even if the FBI thought he might
[33:18] Speaker 2: be the mastermind for this alleged insider job, he looked
[33:21] Speaker 2: hell of normal on paper. He had no criminal history.
[33:24] Speaker 2: He's from the solid middle class home. He's well remembered
[33:27] Speaker 2: by his former co workers. They're like, oh, man, he
[33:28] Speaker 2: used to pull pranks on us. That was great. He
[33:30] Speaker 2: sent to humor. They were like fun, flirt lord, pressure right,
[33:34] Speaker 2: big Diana fan. Everybody could relate to him. As far
[33:37] Speaker 2: as the FBI was concerned, he didn't fit the profile
[33:39] Speaker 2: of a big bad bank robbery if he was on
[33:42] Speaker 2: criminal minds. I'll put this in your terms. They say
[33:44] Speaker 2: his profile didn't fit the unsub they were looking for.
[33:47] Speaker 5: I see, okay, now, okay, yes, now, now if you
[33:51] Speaker 5: can say that while dressed and sounding like Joe Montana, then.
[33:55] Speaker 2: I would have nailed it. Then that's too big of
[33:57] Speaker 2: an ask. Sorry, there's only one Joe Mantanine. So it
[34:01] Speaker 2: was clearly obviously suspicious that the safety director of facility
[34:04] Speaker 2: got fired one day before, But they just could not
[34:06] Speaker 2: nail them, and they couldn't get the papers so they
[34:08] Speaker 2: could raid his home and find any evidence because you know,
[34:10] Speaker 2: they needed the DA to sign off or whatever, try
[34:12] Speaker 2: as they might looks like the FBI and just might
[34:14] Speaker 2: never solve this one just had this embarrassing stain on
[34:17] Speaker 2: their face forever. So now I ask you one last time,
[34:20] Speaker 2: how the hell did they end up on this show?
[34:22] Speaker 4: Went wrong?
[34:23] Speaker 2: But they're perfectly planned executed heist.
[34:25] Speaker 4: I don't know, but I feel like it's going to
[34:26] Speaker 4: be a cautionary tale.
[34:27] Speaker 2: It is. Hold that thought, Elizabeth, and after these messages,
[34:30] Speaker 2: I will tell you how the dunbar armored Heist Facility
[34:32] Speaker 2: heist crew finally ran out of Lady Luck's favor. Oh
[34:55] Speaker 2: we're back, Elizabeth, Yes we are so now that we've
[34:58] Speaker 2: done the deal and seeing that these cats slipped away
[35:00] Speaker 2: and leave no actionable clues. Ready to hear how the
[35:03] Speaker 2: heighst crew is perfect Luck finally ran out after the
[35:07] Speaker 2: completion of the successful heist. Right. Originally, each member of
[35:10] Speaker 2: the hight crew received one hundred thousand dollars from the robbery.
[35:13] Speaker 2: It was like walking around money. They all were getting
[35:15] Speaker 2: some money, just a little taste of success. Yeah, you know,
[35:17] Speaker 2: they don't spend all in one place.
[35:18] Speaker 3: Now.
[35:18] Speaker 2: As for the rest of the cash, the mastermind Alan
[35:21] Speaker 2: paced the third He kept it under lock and key
[35:23] Speaker 2: at a secure storage facility in the South LA neighborhood
[35:26] Speaker 2: of Guardina. Right, So then he and his childhood friends,
[35:29] Speaker 2: he's ill. Yes, they lay low and they they said,
[35:33] Speaker 2: stretches for years. They lay low for years. Meanwhile, LAPD's
[35:37] Speaker 2: burglary team, FBI robbery squads, big time embarrassed. They just
[35:41] Speaker 2: are still working the case, still working the case. Dunbar
[35:43] Speaker 2: armored heist is like, it's this legendary thing. People are
[35:46] Speaker 2: talking about it. So they're embarrassed and they really want
[35:49] Speaker 2: to bust these guys. But howl. During the subsequent months
[35:52] Speaker 2: and years, nothing turns up, no tips, nobody flips on them,
[35:56] Speaker 2: No girlfriends get upset, no wives get you know, like,
[35:58] Speaker 2: oh you got a side piece, None of the like that. Right,
[36:01] Speaker 2: But the FBI they do follow up on their one
[36:03] Speaker 2: good lead, that broken tail light right left at the scene.
[36:06] Speaker 2: The FBI forensics teams they determined that the tail light
[36:09] Speaker 2: belonged to a U haul rental truck, so that was good.
[36:12] Speaker 2: The FBI visits all of the U haul rental centers
[36:15] Speaker 2: in the La Long beach area, the valley covering.
[36:18] Speaker 4: Sometimes sometimes you gotta just do that shoe.
[36:21] Speaker 2: Love exactly, that's the deal.
[36:23] Speaker 4: They look, get out there and shake some trees.
[36:25] Speaker 2: They check every record they can for any truck rented
[36:28] Speaker 2: by an Allen Pace the third, who's on their only suspect. Sure,
[36:31] Speaker 2: since they're fairly certain it was inside job and it
[36:33] Speaker 2: was him, this fits their theory. Only trouble is the
[36:36] Speaker 2: U haul rental folks. At every place they go to,
[36:38] Speaker 2: they tell the FBI they have no records of an
[36:40] Speaker 2: Allen Pace the third renting a truck at that time
[36:42] Speaker 2: or anywhere near that time, or in fact ever, He's
[36:45] Speaker 2: never ever rented a U that's not his thing. He's like,
[36:48] Speaker 2: I got a friend with the truck. He has a
[36:50] Speaker 2: box truck. He lives in. So what's frustrating for the FBI, Right,
[36:54] Speaker 2: But they don't give up on Allen Pace the third
[36:56] Speaker 2: is their lead suspect. They just have like a picture
[36:58] Speaker 2: of them in their office throwing dark chat it right,
[37:01] Speaker 2: They started working round the clock surveillance of Pace, you know,
[37:04] Speaker 2: just all that. They just stay on him this whole time.
[37:06] Speaker 2: They watch him. They wait for him to slip up
[37:08] Speaker 2: to spend some money. He shouldn't be able to have
[37:10] Speaker 2: do some odd behavior anything. Yeah, this man, this cat,
[37:14] Speaker 2: he is cool as a cucumber and a bowl of
[37:15] Speaker 2: hot sauce. Shout out to Man May and MCA. Now,
[37:18] Speaker 2: Allen Pace doesn't spend money, No extravagant purchases, no trips,
[37:22] Speaker 2: He doesn't leave the LA area nothing. He doesn't even
[37:24] Speaker 2: have a bank account. I mean any money he spends
[37:27] Speaker 2: is basically cash. He doesn't do anything that confirms their suspicions.
[37:31] Speaker 2: Not only that, Elizabeth, do you want to know how
[37:33] Speaker 2: committed to the heist this dude is. He doesn't even
[37:35] Speaker 2: contact any of his childhood friends from the heist team
[37:38] Speaker 2: for the two years time he cuts off all contacts,
[37:40] Speaker 2: severs any links to the FBI could use to connect
[37:43] Speaker 2: any of them to each other. Right, super smart? Really
[37:47] Speaker 2: on though, before the FBI began their surveill It's likely
[37:50] Speaker 2: in the first day or two after the robbery, back
[37:51] Speaker 2: when they were still talking to each other, Like maybe I.
[37:54] Speaker 4: Think did they all just go through the attorney?
[37:56] Speaker 2: Is that they have friends of friends and stuff. They
[37:58] Speaker 2: have ways to get to each other, but they just
[38:00] Speaker 2: have no direct contact. You know, they can pass word
[38:02] Speaker 2: through the hood. So he starts, you know, I imagine
[38:05] Speaker 2: that they were counting the stolen cash and they noticed
[38:08] Speaker 2: that a good amount of the money had sequential serial numbers.
[38:10] Speaker 2: So they thought that this would be an imminently easy
[38:12] Speaker 2: way for us to get caught. So they needed to
[38:14] Speaker 2: make a plan for what to do with that cash.
[38:16] Speaker 2: He told his accomplices burn it, and they burned the money.
[38:20] Speaker 2: They just get rid of it. They burned millions of dollars.
[38:22] Speaker 2: It's all free money to them, so they're that disciplined.
[38:24] Speaker 2: They burned millions of dollars to make sure that they
[38:26] Speaker 2: wouldn't be attempted to spend it, and it had to
[38:28] Speaker 2: be drawed back to them. Good question. Have you ever
[38:31] Speaker 2: burned money?
[38:32] Speaker 4: No, I'm not an idiot.
[38:33] Speaker 2: This will probably not surprise you. I have. I have
[38:35] Speaker 2: burned money because I am an idiot. It wasn't stolen
[38:38] Speaker 2: bank deposits. It was my money. It's my own money. Well,
[38:41] Speaker 2: it just goes to show a stupid I am about money.
[38:43] Speaker 2: I literally have burned my own cash. Why, well, I'll
[38:47] Speaker 2: put it to you this way. I was to amuse
[38:49] Speaker 2: my buddy's style. He was he's kind of a square, right,
[38:52] Speaker 2: and so I was like, only I'll burn a dollar
[38:54] Speaker 2: and so I burned like a five dollar bill, and
[38:56] Speaker 2: then I burned a one dollar bill. So we could
[38:57] Speaker 2: see the difference between Lincoln in Washington's faces that they
[38:59] Speaker 2: burned right, and so he was amused by this. And
[39:02] Speaker 2: I took the the Washington and I laid it down
[39:04] Speaker 2: in this big glass ashtray, and the bill fully burned
[39:07] Speaker 2: up and it just left a perfect ash dollar bill.
[39:10] Speaker 2: It was so cool to look at. And then we
[39:11] Speaker 2: started poking it like into like George Washington's face gets
[39:14] Speaker 2: all distorted and treasure. I was in college right anyway,
[39:19] Speaker 2: So ever like playing pointalism on old George's face. Right,
[39:22] Speaker 2: the bill is this perfect ash version. The reason for
[39:24] Speaker 2: that is money isn't just paper. It has cotton fibers. Yeah,
[39:27] Speaker 2: rolling through it right.
[39:28] Speaker 4: So yeah.
[39:29] Speaker 2: Second question, you ever tried to burn clothing?
[39:32] Speaker 4: I've accidentally burned clothes.
[39:34] Speaker 2: Okay, well, I once tried.
[39:36] Speaker 5: I've had pants burned with a sage stick at a
[39:39] Speaker 5: at a winter solstice, and I wish it.
[39:43] Speaker 4: I wish I'd never been there.
[39:45] Speaker 2: I once got lost on a mountain. I took my
[39:47] Speaker 2: t shirt off, wrapped around a stick and tried to
[39:49] Speaker 2: make a torch because it was late at night and
[39:51] Speaker 2: all I had was matches, and torches don't burn because
[39:54] Speaker 2: of the cotton. They burned because you dip them in things.
[39:57] Speaker 2: And so I didn't burn. And she's up all my
[40:00] Speaker 2: matches and had no shirt to wear. Anyway, you need
[40:04] Speaker 2: a really big fire for sources of combustion, right, you
[40:07] Speaker 2: would gas, propane, something wax. Anyway, clothing's gonna burn. So
[40:11] Speaker 2: this is why, once again, dollar bills don't burn so easily. No,
[40:15] Speaker 2: if you're wondering, this is not how they got caught
[40:17] Speaker 2: burning the money. Burning the money, was that they go
[40:19] Speaker 2: on there like the smoke set up. No, Instead, they
[40:21] Speaker 2: gave up on burning the money because it was so difficult,
[40:23] Speaker 2: and they decided, we'll just go and spend the money
[40:25] Speaker 2: that is a serial numbers. Where can we spend money
[40:27] Speaker 2: that's sequential serial numbers and not get caught? Where is that? Elizabeth?
[40:31] Speaker 2: I think you can guess this one at casino. If
[40:33] Speaker 2: you said a Las Vegas, you're today's big winner. So
[40:37] Speaker 2: that's exactly what the pair of the heist team did.
[40:39] Speaker 2: They said, road trip Vegas, Baby Vegas, you're so money.
[40:43] Speaker 2: Now they can't they learned something else about crisp clean
[40:46] Speaker 2: brand new dollar bills. Slot machines do not like new money.
[40:51] Speaker 2: Oh really, yes, if you put a wad of crisp
[40:53] Speaker 2: new cash into a slot machine, the machine waft and jam. Oh,
[40:57] Speaker 2: this cand be trouble for people. But this is not
[40:59] Speaker 2: how they got caught. They took a quick detour to
[41:02] Speaker 2: Las Vegas laundromat to wash their money. After they literally
[41:06] Speaker 2: laundered their cash, they went back to the casinos hit it.
[41:09] Speaker 7: Oh.
[41:09] Speaker 2: They they wrinkled it all up. Yeah, and they wet
[41:11] Speaker 2: it down and everything, and they hit up the slot.
[41:13] Speaker 4: Machine doing your laundry and just.
[41:16] Speaker 2: Got cash in the machine just going around.
[41:18] Speaker 5: Well, it's probably they probably put it in one of
[41:20] Speaker 5: those like lingerie.
[41:25] Speaker 4: Well, they're just like being careful.
[41:27] Speaker 2: Meanwhile, back at the ranch, the LAPD and FBI are
[41:30] Speaker 2: still chasing after phantoms, and eventually, after the surveillance of
[41:33] Speaker 2: Allen Pace turns up Diddley and Jack Squatt and after
[41:36] Speaker 2: no new leads come in and the case has gone
[41:38] Speaker 2: super cold, like colder than a penguin's tail feathers. And
[41:41] Speaker 2: we've had two full years past at this point. Yeah,
[41:44] Speaker 2: wouldn't you know it? Lady luck wandered off to glow
[41:47] Speaker 2: blow on some other guy's dice, and well, brather than me.
[41:50] Speaker 2: Tell you about this, Elizabeth, I'd just like you to
[41:52] Speaker 2: close your eyes. I'd like you to picture it. It's
[42:04] Speaker 2: nineteen ninety nine and you are enjoying a quiet day
[42:07] Speaker 2: in the office of your new boss. You've just arrived
[42:09] Speaker 2: at work and have settled into your daily routine of
[42:11] Speaker 2: reading Michael Connolly detective novels until the phone works. At
[42:15] Speaker 2: the moment, you are recently hired new secretary for a
[42:17] Speaker 2: real estate speculator and in southern California investor. The work
[42:21] Speaker 2: is slow and undemanding, which you like. Dowers are good,
[42:24] Speaker 2: the pay is good, and that's really the reason you
[42:26] Speaker 2: took this job after you lost everything in a failed
[42:28] Speaker 2: dot com startup called Slot's Virtual Strip Club, which was
[42:32] Speaker 2: just actually a video feed of a couch that sometimes
[42:34] Speaker 2: featured a woman as she read from a book and
[42:36] Speaker 2: slowly seductively flipped the pages. Somehow that didn't fit into
[42:40] Speaker 2: the dot com boom. Oh well, but now you get
[42:42] Speaker 2: paid to read, so the least there's that. Anyway. Today
[42:45] Speaker 2: you're reading waiting on a call, but the phone's been silent. However,
[42:48] Speaker 2: there's suddenly a knock at the door. You pop up
[42:51] Speaker 2: to answer. It's like, oh exciting. A young gentleman steps
[42:53] Speaker 2: in and he says he has an appointment with your boss.
[42:55] Speaker 2: He tells you just stopping by to drop off a
[42:57] Speaker 2: deposit for a recent real estate purchase. Your boss is
[43:00] Speaker 2: out showing a property to a client, which is a lie.
[43:03] Speaker 2: Your boss's home with a severe hangover. The young man says,
[43:06] Speaker 2: I bet, so kind lead to deposit with you. You
[43:08] Speaker 2: sort of stare at him and then realize you haven't
[43:10] Speaker 2: said anything, so you say, oh, yes, sure. The young
[43:13] Speaker 2: man reaches into his backpack and he pulls out a
[43:15] Speaker 2: stack of cash, and he sets down stack after stack
[43:17] Speaker 2: of cash. The money looks to be fresh from the bank.
[43:20] Speaker 2: I'm talking. The bands are still on the stacks of
[43:22] Speaker 2: ten thousand dollars each. He drops ten stacks on your desk,
[43:26] Speaker 2: and then he asks for a receipt. You quickly locate
[43:28] Speaker 2: the receipt book. You fill out the appropriate paperwork. You
[43:31] Speaker 2: hand the young man his receipt. He smiles bet thanks.
[43:35] Speaker 2: You heads for the door. After he leaves, you stare
[43:38] Speaker 2: at the pile of money on your desk. One hundred grand.
[43:41] Speaker 2: It's so tempty you can just walk out of here.
[43:44] Speaker 2: But then, being the super observer that you are, you
[43:46] Speaker 2: notice the bands are not from a bank. They're from
[43:48] Speaker 2: a Dunbar armored car service. You remember reading about the
[43:51] Speaker 2: brazen robbery of the Dunbar facility a couple of years back.
[43:54] Speaker 2: You stare at it some more, and then you pick
[43:56] Speaker 2: up a stack of bills. You fan the bills. They
[43:59] Speaker 2: are crisp. Oh, the clean money smell. This money has
[44:02] Speaker 2: never been in circulation. You see that the bands have
[44:05] Speaker 2: dates on them. You check the date nineteen ninety seven.
[44:08] Speaker 2: That was the same year of the Dunbar heist. Then
[44:11] Speaker 2: it hits you, this stolen loot. You are over the moon.
[44:15] Speaker 2: Finally some excitement in this office. You pick up the phone,
[44:18] Speaker 2: call your boss at home. You quickly tell him what
[44:20] Speaker 2: just happened and your working theory. He says, hang up
[44:23] Speaker 2: the phone, call the LAPD. You do just that, but
[44:26] Speaker 2: you decided to call the Hollywood division on Wilcox, the
[44:28] Speaker 2: same division from the Michael Connolly series of Bosh Detective novels.
[44:32] Speaker 2: You asked to speak to robbery Homicide. It's all happening.
[44:35] Speaker 2: You're calling Bosh's division. Only Bosh isn't real, but you are.
[44:39] Speaker 2: But Dan, just like his other great detective Renee Ballard,
[44:42] Speaker 2: you have just solved a real life cold case.
[44:46] Speaker 4: Oh my god.
[44:47] Speaker 2: After the LAPD gets his call and they come out
[44:50] Speaker 2: to the real estate office to check the money bands,
[44:53] Speaker 2: the detectives are stoked. They immediately recognize They confirm this
[44:56] Speaker 2: is indeed money from the dunbar job two years back.
[45:00] Speaker 4: I just they left.
[45:03] Speaker 2: He left the bands on too lazy. Of all the things,
[45:08] Speaker 2: the LAPD calls in the FBI. The FEDS are super stoked.
[45:13] Speaker 2: Now they finally have an actionable lead on their cold case.
[45:15] Speaker 2: The Bureau springs into action. They have someone other than
[45:18] Speaker 2: Alan Pace the Third to run surveillance on Yeah, they
[45:21] Speaker 2: do just that. They watch Eugene Hill around the clock.
[45:24] Speaker 2: They peer into his bank records, they examine his phone records.
[45:27] Speaker 2: They go back to U haul and ask the truck
[45:29] Speaker 2: rental folks if they ever had a reservation for a
[45:31] Speaker 2: man named Eugene Hill. U haul folks check their records up.
[45:35] Speaker 2: What do you know out of the tens of thousands
[45:37] Speaker 2: of records they have on file out jumps a reservation
[45:40] Speaker 2: for a rental truck rented the day of the robbery.
[45:43] Speaker 4: No gene.
[45:45] Speaker 2: The bureau throws on their windbreakers with the big yellow
[45:47] Speaker 2: letters that read the FBI across their backs, and they
[45:50] Speaker 2: go roll over to surprise mister Hill. He's promptly located arrested, Elizabeth.
[45:56] Speaker 2: What do you think he did when the FBI showed
[45:57] Speaker 2: up his house, kicked in the door, threw him on
[45:59] Speaker 2: the floor or whatever, arrested them, pulled him into an
[46:01] Speaker 2: interrogation room, presented their evidence linking him to the Dunbar Heights.
[46:05] Speaker 2: Did he roll over on his trusted child friends.
[46:08] Speaker 4: Cleared his throat and sang.
[46:10] Speaker 2: Like a bird, But I believe he did. He sat
[46:13] Speaker 2: there and sang every song he knew. The FBI offered
[46:15] Speaker 2: him a deal, that's how much he was singing, and
[46:17] Speaker 2: about as fast as he could. He said, I bet
[46:20] Speaker 2: I'd like to cooperate, so or some words to that effect.
[46:23] Speaker 2: The Hill said, I was there, I did that robbery,
[46:25] Speaker 2: and only that he was like and the mastermind was
[46:27] Speaker 2: my friend Allan Paced the third. The other guy's names
[46:29] Speaker 2: are Boom. The cat told the FBI everything he knew,
[46:33] Speaker 2: and next the FBI locates the other members of the
[46:35] Speaker 2: heist crew before they can be warned about this, arrest
[46:38] Speaker 2: them all, and just like that, years after their successful
[46:41] Speaker 2: heightst the Amateur Height crew finds themselves in federal court.
[46:45] Speaker 2: The first trial kicks off in two thousand and one.
[46:47] Speaker 2: It's pretty much an open end, shutcase. Each member of
[46:50] Speaker 2: the heist team is tried, convicted, and sentenced boom. Each
[46:53] Speaker 2: member of the crew gets seven and a half years
[46:55] Speaker 2: in federal lock up, except Alan Pace, the third. He
[46:58] Speaker 2: refuses to cooperate. He did not all the charges, wouldn't
[47:01] Speaker 2: confess to anything, say he knew anybody. That means the
[47:04] Speaker 2: judge threw the book at him and then chased it
[47:06] Speaker 2: with his gavel. He gave him twenty four years in
[47:08] Speaker 2: federal prison. He sent him up to FCI Stafford over
[47:11] Speaker 2: in Arizona, which is not a place you want to be,
[47:13] Speaker 2: and there he stayed until October of twenty twenty. He
[47:16] Speaker 2: did nineteen years behind bars, and based on the date,
[47:19] Speaker 2: I don't think he got off for good time. I
[47:20] Speaker 2: think he qualified for early release during the COVID years
[47:23] Speaker 2: since it was October twenty twenty, and I had an
[47:25] Speaker 2: uncle who was let out of federal prison around that
[47:27] Speaker 2: same time for that same reason. So I'm guessing that's
[47:29] Speaker 2: what it was. Now, if you speak with Alan Pace
[47:31] Speaker 2: a third today, he still denies he had anything to
[47:34] Speaker 2: do with the Dunbar heist. The most he's ever said
[47:36] Speaker 2: is that he must have been framed by one of
[47:38] Speaker 2: the guys who did it, one of his fellow co defendants. Right,
[47:41] Speaker 2: what was his reasoning for why they would frame him
[47:43] Speaker 2: for the job? Good question, Elizabeth.
[47:45] Speaker 4: Thanks.
[47:45] Speaker 2: Alan Pace said that he suspects it. Maybe I was
[47:48] Speaker 2: messing with his wife. Oh so there was that. Now
[47:52] Speaker 2: I left out two folks. So what about the immigration
[47:54] Speaker 2: lawyer and his assistant? Yeah, ka, the money launderers, Well,
[47:57] Speaker 2: don't worry. The FBI caught up with them too. David
[48:00] Speaker 2: Matsumoto got indicted on seventy one counts of money laundering
[48:03] Speaker 2: and one count of aiding in a bedding tried, convicted,
[48:07] Speaker 2: found guilty sentence for his part in the money laundering.
[48:09] Speaker 2: He got twenty seven months in federal prison, so two
[48:12] Speaker 2: years three months. Being that he was a lawyer. He
[48:14] Speaker 2: was also disbarred by the state of California. Ye his assistant,
[48:17] Speaker 2: Joaquin beIN, he had been at this point he'd become
[48:20] Speaker 2: an Arabian horse farm owner in the santi Andez Valley.
[48:24] Speaker 4: I wonder where he is.
[48:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, right, all that goes boof. He's also tried, convicted,
[48:28] Speaker 2: sentence to thirty months in federal prison. I guess his
[48:30] Speaker 2: boss had a better lawyer. Some of the eighteen point
[48:33] Speaker 2: nine million dollars that the crew stole, Matsumoto had washed
[48:36] Speaker 2: a considerable amount. The FBI was only able to recover
[48:39] Speaker 2: about five million from the robbery. There remains an outstanding
[48:42] Speaker 2: fortune they could never find, according to US attorney Alejandro Majorcas. Unfortunately,
[48:47] Speaker 2: despite their extraordinary efforts, over ten million dollars is still
[48:51] Speaker 2: unaccounted for. Well, they burned some, they burned some, and
[48:55] Speaker 2: also Alan pay Saint talking, so I think he knows
[48:56] Speaker 2: where some of it is. Yeah, and it's likely the
[48:59] Speaker 2: f BET will never be able to fine or reclaim
[49:00] Speaker 2: that missing money. But I think they keep an eye
[49:02] Speaker 2: on him, waiting for him to buy a boat or
[49:03] Speaker 2: do something.
[49:04] Speaker 4: Sure, and there you go.
[49:05] Speaker 2: So ends our tale of the all at the time
[49:08] Speaker 2: the largest cash robbery of an armored car company in
[49:12] Speaker 2: So what's our ridiculous takeaway here? Elizabeth?
[49:14] Speaker 4: You know, we we have childhood friends, but we don't
[49:19] Speaker 4: have good judgment as children about like character and personality
[49:25] Speaker 4: and who might be fun to pal around with as
[49:28] Speaker 4: a kid doesn't always grow up to be Yes, So
[49:31] Speaker 4: you've got this one loose cannon who is too lazy
[49:34] Speaker 4: to take the bands off the money.
[49:35] Speaker 2: And Alan pays. He basically picked them because he knew
[49:38] Speaker 2: it where their families were if he needed to get revenge.
[49:40] Speaker 2: But he never thought that one of them just get busted. Flip.
[49:42] Speaker 2: He had not thought about the unexpected, right right, Saren,
[49:46] Speaker 2: what's your I just told it you. Sorry, I skipped ahead.
[49:48] Speaker 2: I couldn't want you to ask, So there you go.
[49:53] Speaker 2: So I enjoyable. It worked for the whole. Well, let's
[49:59] Speaker 2: wash this all down with the talkback. What do you

[50:34] Speaker 8: which he was definitely pretending to be somebody specially and
[50:40] Speaker 8: makes forty children with someone, So anyway, are you ridiculous?
