## Transcript

[0:03] SPEAKER_08: Welcome to Saints Alive, where we take you with us to meet God's most heroic followers.
[0:09] SPEAKER_08: The saints were just ordinary boys and girls who allowed God's love to transform them into real life superheroes.
[0:16] SPEAKER_08: Their love for God changed our world.
[0:19] SPEAKER_08: Did you know that God has sent you here to become a saint?
[0:22] SPEAKER_08: It's up to you to choose love over fear, to be courageous, faithful, and kind.
[0:27] SPEAKER_08: The choice to become a saint won't be easy, but it will be worth it.
[0:31] SPEAKER_08: So listen closely and open your hearts.
[0:34] SPEAKER_08: These real life tales of the saints from the past may just inspire you how to live your story.
[0:40] SPEAKER_08: Let's go on this adventure together.
[1:16] SPEAKER_04: Salve, Doctor.
[1:18] SPEAKER_05: The nurses told me you didn't sleep much last night.
[1:21] SPEAKER_05: How's the pain?
[1:23] SPEAKER_04: There are people who suffer much more than me.
[1:26] SPEAKER_05: And those who suffer much less.
[1:45] SPEAKER_04: Oh, except do you know when the priest will be by?
[1:49] SPEAKER_05: Father Villa?
[1:51] SPEAKER_05: Didn't you see him yesterday?
[1:52] SPEAKER_04: Yes, but I would love to receive Holy Communion again today.
[1:57] SPEAKER_05: I'll try to find him for you.
[1:59] SPEAKER_05: Do you go to Mass every day?
[2:01] SPEAKER_04: Yes, ever since my first communion.
[2:04] SPEAKER_04: I find my strength from it.
[2:06] SPEAKER_05: Wow.
[2:07] SPEAKER_05: To be honest, Carlo, I don't even get to Mass on Sundays.
[2:12] SPEAKER_05: I guess the habit of going to church faded slowly and then just stopped.
[2:18] SPEAKER_05: I have nothing against faith, but since medical school.
[2:30] SPEAKER_00: Of course.
[2:32] SPEAKER_00: All of us argue over who get to have the computer whiz as a patient.
[2:37] SPEAKER_05: Computer whiz, eh?
[2:38] SPEAKER_04: I didn't know about this.
[2:40] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, I've always loved video games, and computer programming is kind of like a cool puzzle.
[2:47] SPEAKER_04: I'm actually working on a website right now to catalogue all the Eucharistic miracles around the world.
[2:53] SPEAKER_04: Eucharistic miracles.
[2:56] SPEAKER_04: Mm-hmm.
[2:57] SPEAKER_04: Every once in a while, Jesus reminds us that he is truly present with us in Holy Communion.
[3:03] SPEAKER_04: So he does something extraordinary.
[3:07] SPEAKER_04: Okay, like what?
[3:10] SPEAKER_04: Well, uh, the one I'm writing about right now is about a miracle in Buenos Aires in 1996.
[3:16] SPEAKER_04: There was this doctor who didn't believe.
[3:27] SPEAKER_04: Cool.
[3:27] SPEAKER_04: The doctor's name was Frederick Zugabi, and he was an incredible surgeon.
[3:37] SPEAKER_06: How a piece of bread can become Jesus.
[3:40] SPEAKER_02: Yes, that is my question.
[3:43] SPEAKER_02: I realize you must find this difficult to believe.
[3:46] SPEAKER_02: Difficult?
[3:47] SPEAKER_06: It's impossible.
[3:49] SPEAKER_06: This is my body, which will be given up for you.
[4:34] SPEAKER_08: Hey Claire, good morning.
[4:35] SPEAKER_08: I got a page.
[4:37] SPEAKER_08: Claire.
[4:39] SPEAKER_08: Claire.
[4:40] SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah, sorry, sorry.
[4:41] SPEAKER_03: Sorry.
[4:42] SPEAKER_03: It's still wrapped up in online chats.
[4:44] SPEAKER_03: I forget what I'm supposed to be doing.
[4:45] SPEAKER_08: I know.
[4:46] SPEAKER_08: Oh.
[4:47] SPEAKER_08: Why was I paged?
[4:49] SPEAKER_03: Oh, yeah.
[4:50] SPEAKER_03: No, right.
[4:51] SPEAKER_03: You have a visitor from South America.
[4:54] SPEAKER_08: South America?
[4:56] SPEAKER_08: Was this on my schedule?
[4:58] SPEAKER_03: I think so.
[4:59] SPEAKER_03: We spoke about it last week.
[5:00] SPEAKER_03: It's Dr.
[5:01] SPEAKER_03: Gomez.
[5:02] SPEAKER_03: Not sure what it's about, but he comes with high credentials.
[5:05] SPEAKER_08: Oh.
[5:06] SPEAKER_08: That's that's right.
[5:08] SPEAKER_08: Well, came all the way from South America, so must be important.
[5:15] SPEAKER_08: Thanks, Claire.
[5:23] SPEAKER_08: Welcome.
[5:24] SPEAKER_08: You must be Dr.
[5:25] SPEAKER_08: Gomez.
[5:26] SPEAKER_08: So sorry to keep you.
[5:28] SPEAKER_02: Not a problem.
[5:29] SPEAKER_02: Thank you for offering your time and expertise.
[5:32] SPEAKER_08: Of course.
[5:32] SPEAKER_08: What can I do to help?
[5:34] SPEAKER_02: Yes, well, I have an interesting case.
[5:38] SPEAKER_02: In order for this process to remain impartial and untainted by bias, I will, for the time being, not disclose our patient's identity or circumstances.
[5:49] SPEAKER_02: And we are required to record on video the following examination.
[5:53] SPEAKER_08: Of course, standard protocol.
[5:55] SPEAKER_08: What is it you need examined?
[5:59] SPEAKER_04: Dr.
[6:00] SPEAKER_04: Gomez took a temperature controlled box out of his suitcase and removed a small glass slide.
[6:07] SPEAKER_04: Dr.
[6:07] SPEAKER_04: Zugebi took the sample, put it under his microscope, and began his examination.
[6:14] SPEAKER_01: Hmm.
[6:15] SPEAKER_08: This is interesting.
[6:19] SPEAKER_08: As I examine the specimen, I will speak for the record.
[6:24] SPEAKER_08: This is flesh, heart muscle tissue, myocardium from the left ventricle wall, not far from the valvular area.
[6:31] SPEAKER_08: It is the muscle that gives the heart its beat and the body its life.
[6:36] SPEAKER_08: This heart muscle is inflamed.
[6:40] SPEAKER_08: Hmm.
[6:42] SPEAKER_08: This poor man, he he must have suffered greatly.
[6:46] SPEAKER_02: Doctor, why has my patient suffered a lot?
[6:50] SPEAKER_08: Because your patient has some thrombi, you see.
[6:54] SPEAKER_08: At certain moments he could not breathe.
[6:56] SPEAKER_08: Oxygen did not reach him.
[6:58] SPEAKER_08: He labored and suffered much because every aspiration, every breath he took was painful.
[7:05] SPEAKER_08: He was probably hit in the chest very hard.
[7:09] SPEAKER_08: And this.
[7:12] SPEAKER_08: This is the most intriguing.
[7:14] SPEAKER_08: The heart shows there was dynamic activity at the moment when the sample was taken.
[7:22] SPEAKER_08: What do you mean?
[7:24] SPEAKER_08: The man was alive when this sample was taken.
[7:29] SPEAKER_08: Why?
[7:30] SPEAKER_08: How do you know?
[7:31] SPEAKER_08: Because I see intact white blood cells.
[7:35] SPEAKER_08: White blood cells are produced to address injury and they are transported only by the blood.
[7:41] SPEAKER_08: Thus, if white blood cells are here, it is because at the moment this sample was taken, it was pulsating.
[7:50] SPEAKER_08: I must ask, who was this poor man?
[7:54] SPEAKER_08: How was this sample taken?
[7:58] SPEAKER_02: For now, the identity of the individual will remain confidential.
[8:02] SPEAKER_02: But I will be in touch soon when our investigation is complete.
[8:06] SPEAKER_02: Thank you for your time and expertise.
[8:09] unknown: Dr.
[8:09] SPEAKER_08: Gomez, I will admit, in ordinary circumstances, I am not overly concerned about the origin of samples.
[8:16] SPEAKER_08: But in this case, I do hope to receive an answer.
[8:20] SPEAKER_02: Be assured, we will be in touch soon.
[8:24] SPEAKER_02: Good day, Doctor.
[8:33] SPEAKER_04: Several weeks went by, and on an overcast day in March, he received another visit from Dr.
[8:39] SPEAKER_04: Gomez.
[8:46] SPEAKER_02: Dr.
[8:47] SPEAKER_02: Shogibi, thank you for having me again.
[8:50] SPEAKER_08: Of course, pleasure to see you again.
[8:52] SPEAKER_08: I have to tell you, I have been so curious as to the case I examined.
[8:59] SPEAKER_02: Well, that's why I'm here.
[9:01] SPEAKER_02: We are ready to disclose the origin of the biological material which we presented to you at our last visit.
[9:10] SPEAKER_02: Your testimony was helpful in determining the structure and substance of the material.
[9:16] SPEAKER_02: And as one scientist speaking to another, there is no easy way to say this.
[9:22] SPEAKER_02: The material you determined to be heart tissue was from a consecrated host.
[9:32] SPEAKER_02: Dr.
[9:32] SPEAKER_02: Sogibie?
[9:34] SPEAKER_02: Did you hear what I said?
[9:36] SPEAKER_02: It is from a host consecrated at a Catholic mass.
[9:40] SPEAKER_02: I realize you must find this difficult to believe.
[9:45] SPEAKER_08: Difficult?
[9:46] SPEAKER_08: Um no, it's impossible.
[9:49] SPEAKER_08: I don't believe it.
[9:51] SPEAKER_08: That was heart tissue.
[9:52] SPEAKER_08: I know the heart.
[9:54] SPEAKER_08: And that heart tissue was taken from a heart that was still alive.
[9:57] SPEAKER_08: I realize this is No no.
[9:59] SPEAKER_08: I remember clearly.
[10:01] SPEAKER_08: There were degenerative changes in the myocardium due to the fact that the cells in the left ventricle were inflamed.
[10:07] SPEAKER_08: Is this some kind of joke?
[10:09] SPEAKER_02: No, no, this is not a joke.
[10:12] SPEAKER_02: In order to ascertain the truth, the diocese of Buenos Aires asked me to find the best doctor to do the examination without knowledge of the consecrated host.
[10:22] SPEAKER_08: With all due respect, Dr.
[10:24] SPEAKER_08: Gomez.
[10:26] SPEAKER_08: I don't know what to say.
[10:30] SPEAKER_08: Where did you say this miracle occurred?
[10:33] SPEAKER_02: Buenos Aires.
[10:34] SPEAKER_02: Argentina.
[10:36] SPEAKER_02: And what was the name of the church?
[10:38] SPEAKER_02: The parish of Santa Maria.
[10:41] SPEAKER_08: Are you going to fly out to see for yourself?
[10:44] SPEAKER_08: No, no, no, no.
[10:45] SPEAKER_02: I just um The priest's name is Father Alejandro Peset.
[10:54] SPEAKER_02: You know what?
[10:55] SPEAKER_02: Just in case you change your mind, here's his card.
[11:00] SPEAKER_02: Take care, Dr.
[11:01] SPEAKER_02: Sogabi.
[11:07] SPEAKER_08: Come on.
[11:08] SPEAKER_08: Pull yourself together.
[11:09] SPEAKER_08: It is impossible.
[11:09] SPEAKER_08: It is impossible, right?
[11:11] SPEAKER_08: No, it's not possible.
[11:12] SPEAKER_08: It's impossible.
[11:13] SPEAKER_08: It can't be.
[11:14] SPEAKER_08: Can it?
[11:15] SPEAKER_08: No, it's not possible.
[11:16] SPEAKER_08: It can't be.
[11:17] SPEAKER_08: Don't you're crazy.
[11:18] SPEAKER_08: No, you're not flying to Blaine's Aries.
[11:20] SPEAKER_08: Uh Claire! Claire?
[11:24] SPEAKER_03: Claire! Yes, doctor.
[11:29] SPEAKER_08: Please cancel my afternoon meetings.
[11:31] SPEAKER_08: Oh my gosh, I can't believe I'm doing this.
[11:33] SPEAKER_08: I have an urgent matter to attend to.
[11:36] SPEAKER_03: Of course.
[11:36] SPEAKER_03: What should I tell the board?
[11:38] SPEAKER_08: Uh tell them I've gone to Buenos Aires to double check something.
[11:47] SPEAKER_03: Oh.
[11:47] SPEAKER_03: Oh, oh, you're Siri.
[11:50] SPEAKER_03: Okay.
[11:51] SPEAKER_03: Well, I will tell them that you are double checking something in Buenos Aires.
[11:55] SPEAKER_03: That should go over well.
[11:57] SPEAKER_08: Oh, and Claire.
[11:59] SPEAKER_03: Yes.
[11:59] SPEAKER_08: I know you were playing chess.
[12:01] SPEAKER_08: I know you're always playing chess.
[12:04] SPEAKER_08: And if you move your rook here, you'll win.
[12:08] SPEAKER_08: You're welcome.
[12:13] SPEAKER_03: Please at shut mate.
[12:18] SPEAKER_03: Congratulations, you're the best box.
[12:44] SPEAKER_04: He immediately went to the church to find Father Pazette.
[13:04] SPEAKER_06: Good morning.
[13:05] SPEAKER_06: Good morning, Father.
[13:06] SPEAKER_06: My name is Dr.
[13:07] SPEAKER_06: Zugeeb.
[13:08] SPEAKER_06: Ah, Dr.
[13:09] SPEAKER_06: Gomez told me you might be reaching out.
[13:12] SPEAKER_06: I didn't expect you to come all the way out here.
[13:16] SPEAKER_06: I'm surprised to be here myself.
[13:20] SPEAKER_06: Please come in.
[13:22] SPEAKER_06: I'll make us some tea.
[13:24] SPEAKER_06: Thank you, Father.
[13:28] SPEAKER_08: I've never done anything like this before.
[13:31] SPEAKER_08: But I felt the need to come and find out what happened here in your church.
[13:37] SPEAKER_08: The day the host supposedly transformed.
[13:43] SPEAKER_06: Well, it it was a mass like any other, although it occurred on the feast of Our Lady's Assumption into Heaven, August 15, 1996.
[13:55] SPEAKER_06: Sugar?
[13:56] SPEAKER_08: Um no, that's that's alright.
[13:59] SPEAKER_08: But wait, did you say 1996?
[14:03] SPEAKER_08: That's nearly eight years ago.
[14:07] SPEAKER_06: Yes, 1996.
[14:09] SPEAKER_06: I will explain.
[14:11] SPEAKER_06: It's simple, really.
[14:14] SPEAKER_06: During the distribution of Holy Communion, a parishioner had dropped the host from his hand and left it there because he thought it was dirty.
[14:24] SPEAKER_06: Another parishioner alerted me to what had happened.
[14:28] SPEAKER_06: Following the instructions of the church, I put the host in a container filled with water, which stayed in the tabernacle, waiting for the host to dissolve.
[14:39] SPEAKER_06: A week later, I opened the tabernacle door to properly dispense of the host and found that it had not dissolved.
[14:49] SPEAKER_06: Incredibly, it had developed reddish stains.
[14:53] SPEAKER_06: Day after day, these stains continued to grow.
[15:01] SPEAKER_06: And the investigation started right away.
[15:03] SPEAKER_06: Not immediately.
[15:19] SPEAKER_06: No, absolutely not.
[15:21] SPEAKER_06: We can demonstrate an unbroken chain of custody of the host.
[15:27] SPEAKER_06: You look troubled.
[15:31] SPEAKER_08: I came all this way to confirm my doubts.
[15:36] SPEAKER_08: I mean heart issue.
[15:39] SPEAKER_08: From unleavened bread.
[15:41] SPEAKER_08: Are you a Catholic?
[15:43] SPEAKER_08: I was baptized Catholic, but I haven't practiced for years.
[15:48] SPEAKER_08: Not since I was a kid.
[15:50] SPEAKER_06: You're a heart doctor, no?
[15:52] SPEAKER_06: Yes.
[15:53] SPEAKER_06: You must come with me into the church.
[15:56] SPEAKER_06: I must show you something.
[16:06] SPEAKER_06: Look at that portrait of Jesus pointing to his sacred heart.
[16:11] SPEAKER_06: I see it.
[16:14] SPEAKER_06: What does it mean?
[16:16] SPEAKER_06: There is a miracle at every mass.
[16:19] SPEAKER_06: Jesus truly comes to us in what looks like bread.
[16:24] SPEAKER_06: In this particular miracle, the Lord wanted to show us his heart.
[16:29] SPEAKER_06: The myocardium in particular, the muscle that gives life to the whole heart, just as the Eucharist does with the church.
[16:37] SPEAKER_06: And why the left ventricle?
[16:40] SPEAKER_06: Well, that is where the purified blood comes from.
[16:45] SPEAKER_06: Exactly.
[16:46] SPEAKER_06: And Jesus is the one who purifies his church from her sins.
[16:52] SPEAKER_06: Listen, I am busy this afternoon, but come back tomorrow for Mass.
[16:58] SPEAKER_08: I'm not sure I have the time.
[17:02] SPEAKER_08: But I'll try to be there.
[17:06] SPEAKER_04: Good.
[17:06] SPEAKER_04: I'll count on it.
[17:10] SPEAKER_04: Dr.
[17:11] SPEAKER_04: Zugibe went back to his hotel exhausted from the hours of travel and woke up the next morning in time to make it to Mass.
[17:24] SPEAKER_06: Dr.
[17:24] SPEAKER_06: Sugibe! Good morning.
[17:27] SPEAKER_06: So glad that you returned.
[17:29] SPEAKER_06: But Mass is not for another half-hour.
[17:33] SPEAKER_06: I came early to speak with you again.
[17:37] SPEAKER_06: Of course.
[17:38] SPEAKER_06: Come in, come in.
[17:40] SPEAKER_06: Now, what is this about?
[17:42] SPEAKER_06: You look overwhelmed.
[17:45] SPEAKER_06: I guess in a way, I am.
[17:50] SPEAKER_08: I mean, I must admit, Father, this experience has shaken my shallow certainties about life, about science and medicine, and about well, everything.
[18:04] SPEAKER_06: Sometimes it is good to have our beliefs shaken up, especially if they are not altogether true.
[18:13] SPEAKER_08: Well, the thing is, science has been my whole life.
[18:19] SPEAKER_08: For so many years.
[18:21] SPEAKER_08: Science has always made my life simple, explainable.
[18:26] SPEAKER_08: Things are what they are, and they're not what they're not.
[18:30] SPEAKER_08: I could explain what things are made of using the periodic table of elements.
[18:35] SPEAKER_08: As a heart doctor, I can tell you how and why a heart works.
[18:40] SPEAKER_06: But what I can't tell you is how a piece of bread can become Jesus.
[18:50] SPEAKER_06: I guess.
[18:52] SPEAKER_06: Yes.
[18:54] SPEAKER_06: That is my question.
[18:57] SPEAKER_06: It all comes down to who Jesus actually is.
[19:02] SPEAKER_06: If he was just a man, you can jump back on that plane and pretend this never happened.
[19:08] SPEAKER_06: But God sent his son Jesus to save us, and at the climax of his life, in the most mysterious way, through his very words, this is my body, he offered his very self to us to be with us always in the Mass.
[19:26] SPEAKER_06: It was the first and last time that the priest and victim were the same person.
[19:34] SPEAKER_06: The Last Supper was his intimate way of showing his disciples that it was truly him making the sacrifice of his life and not the crowd or the Romans taking it from him.
[19:47] SPEAKER_06: Do you know what happened when he first gave this Eucharistic teaching?
[19:52] SPEAKER_01: No.
[19:53] SPEAKER_06: People walked away.
[19:55] SPEAKER_06: They didn't believe it.
[19:57] SPEAKER_06: But here's the thing: Jesus didn't clarify or change the teaching.
[20:02] SPEAKER_06: He let them walk away.
[20:05] SPEAKER_06: I just I just don't think I can believe it.
[20:12] SPEAKER_06: It's too hard.
[20:14] SPEAKER_06: In the gospel, a father whose child was suffering immensely once asked Jesus to help him heal his child.
[20:24] SPEAKER_06: Jesus told this man, All things are possible to him who believes.
[20:31] SPEAKER_06: This man won over the heart of Jesus with these words.
[20:37] SPEAKER_06: Lord, I believe.
[20:40] SPEAKER_06: Help my unbelief.
[20:44] SPEAKER_06: Try to believe, my son.
[20:48] SPEAKER_04: Something struck Dr.
[20:50] SPEAKER_04: Zugebi after his conversation with Father Gomez.
[20:53] SPEAKER_04: He paced outside of the church before the pals began to beckon him inside for mass.
[20:58] SPEAKER_04: Seating in the last pew, he tried to decide what to believe.
[21:07] SPEAKER_07: God.
[21:09] SPEAKER_07: I don't even know where to begin.
[21:13] SPEAKER_07: Show me the way.
[21:16] SPEAKER_04: At the consecration, Father Pezette lifted the host and spoke Jesus' words.
[21:22] SPEAKER_06: This is my body which will be given up for you.
[21:39] SPEAKER_04: And it was in that moment that Dr.
[21:41] SPEAKER_04: Zugebi decided to try.
[21:44] SPEAKER_04: He closed his eyes and he spoke to God in a whisper.
[21:49] SPEAKER_04: Lord, I believe.
[21:57] SPEAKER_04: Help my unbelief.
[21:58] SPEAKER_04: When Dr.
[21:59] SPEAKER_04: Zugebi opened his eyes, Father Peset held the chalice aloft.
[22:04] SPEAKER_06: This is the chalice of my blood.
[22:10] SPEAKER_04: A rush of warm childhood memories poured over and through him.
[22:18] SPEAKER_04: Prayers long forgotten in the midst of time returned in a flood.
[22:22] SPEAKER_04: Tears welled up in his eyes.
[22:25] SPEAKER_04: One of those prayers came out in a whisper.
[22:28] unknown: My Lord, and my God.
[22:32] SPEAKER_07: It is you.
[22:54] SPEAKER_05: Not me.
[22:55] SPEAKER_05: Jesus.
[22:57] SPEAKER_04: He is the one who draws you back.
[22:59] SPEAKER_04: I am so out of practice.
[23:01] SPEAKER_04: You are a good doctor and a good man.
[23:04] SPEAKER_04: I know you shed blood, sweat, and tears for medicine, for healing people.
[23:10] SPEAKER_04: Know that Jesus shed the same for you and your healing.
[23:16] SPEAKER_05: I'll tell you what.
[23:17] SPEAKER_05: I promise you I will take a look at your website when I get home.
[23:21] SPEAKER_05: Who knows what the Lord will do.
[23:27] SPEAKER_04: Looks like we just found out.
[23:29] SPEAKER_04: Come on in, Father Vila.
[23:31] SPEAKER_04: Perfect timing.
[23:32] SPEAKER_04: I just finished telling Dr.
[23:34] SPEAKER_04: Biondi a great story.
