[0:02] SPEAKER_00: Welcome to Saints Alive, where we take you with us to meet God's most heroic followers.
[0:08] SPEAKER_00: The saints were just ordinary boys and girls who allowed God's love to transform them into real life superheroes.
[0:16] SPEAKER_00: Their love for God changed our world.
[0:19] SPEAKER_00: Did you know that God has sent you here to become a saint?
[0:22] SPEAKER_00: It's up to you to choose love over fear, to be courageous, faithful, and kind.
[0:27] SPEAKER_00: The choice to become a saint won't be easy, but it will be worth it.
[0:31] SPEAKER_00: So listen closely and open your hearts.
[0:34] SPEAKER_00: These real life tales of the saints from the past may just inspire you how to live your story.
[0:40] SPEAKER_00: Let's go on this adventure together.
[1:05] SPEAKER_04: Isaac Jogues is my name, and I was born in 1607 in France.
[1:11] SPEAKER_04: As a child, I was bright and athletic.
[1:14] SPEAKER_04: But as my father died when I was young, I had to grow up quickly.
[1:19] SPEAKER_04: I learned early on that we can't hide from suffering.
[1:22] SPEAKER_04: We can only choose what we do with it.
[1:26] SPEAKER_04: Some men turn inward, wallow in bitterness and despair, while others turn outward, allowing their suffering to be a source of understanding and compassion.
[1:39] SPEAKER_04: I suppose that's why I was first drawn to the stories of Martyrdom.
[1:44] SPEAKER_04: As a Jesuit novice, I would spend hours reading letters from the missionaries in Ethiopia and the Indies.
[1:52] SPEAKER_04: I longed to be like them, to be the feet and hands of Christ to those who had never heard of Jesus.
[1:59] SPEAKER_04: And when I journeyed to the New World, what you'd now call Canada and New York, that's what I tried to be.
[2:42] SPEAKER_04: Those who live by the sword die by the sword in Inatig.
[2:46] SPEAKER_09: Not if you can't catch me!
[2:47] SPEAKER_04: And pride comes before the form.
[2:50] SPEAKER_04: Wait, time out.
[2:51] SPEAKER_04: I'll make you a deal.
[2:53] SPEAKER_04: Beat me to the tree, and I will do your chores for a week.
[2:56] SPEAKER_04: But if I win.
[2:58] SPEAKER_09: Ready, set, go! Hey, get back here!
[3:07] SPEAKER_04: The year was 1641.
[3:10] SPEAKER_04: Though I had been with the Huron for six years, I still delighted in coming to know their hearts.
[3:24] SPEAKER_10: So your God, the Father, is the creator who dreamed all good things.
[3:32] SPEAKER_10: And he's also the Son and also the Great Spirit.
[3:36] SPEAKER_04: Yes.
[3:37] SPEAKER_04: And he became man and became to reveal the love of the Great Spirit.
[3:43] SPEAKER_04: And when that love was rejected, he became an offering for his brothers.
[3:48] SPEAKER_09: And journeyed among the stars to the land of the dead so that all may live again?
[3:54] SPEAKER_04: Yes.
[3:55] SPEAKER_04: Soon you'll be the teacher, I mean that he's a father.
[4:00] SPEAKER_04: John, what are you doing here?
[4:02] SPEAKER_15: I came to warn you.
[4:04] SPEAKER_15: The Iroquois are on the move.
[4:07] SPEAKER_04: What do you mean?
[4:08] SPEAKER_15: They are attacking the Huron people wherever they find them.
[4:12] SPEAKER_15: It's grown so dire that the village I serve won't be trading this year in three rivers for fear of being attacked on the way.
[4:19] SPEAKER_15: But your people rely on the trade for food, for medicine, crops, so many things.
[4:25] SPEAKER_15: We are sending no one.
[4:28] SPEAKER_04: Then I will go.
[4:32] SPEAKER_09: You can't.
[4:33] SPEAKER_09: What do you mean you'll go?
[4:35] SPEAKER_04: Don't worry.
[4:36] SPEAKER_04: I'll be back.
[4:37] SPEAKER_04: Your people were the first to welcome me.
[4:40] SPEAKER_04: I must help where I can.
[4:49] SPEAKER_04: It was a bold idea, but I knew it was the right thing to do.
[4:55] SPEAKER_04: And so the next morning, I made a long journey to Three Rivers.
[4:59] SPEAKER_04: Once there, I traded for goods and medicine.
[5:02] SPEAKER_04: And met a physician and missionary who wanted to return with me.
[5:08] SPEAKER_02: There we are, father.
[5:10] SPEAKER_02: Goods and medicine to last into next year.
[5:13] SPEAKER_02: Smile, monsieur.
[5:14] SPEAKER_02: France are so heavy.
[5:16] SPEAKER_02: How can I smile when the English and the Dutch say we spread calamity wherever we go?
[5:23] SPEAKER_02: These people don't think of the good news we bring.
[5:27] SPEAKER_02: They think of guns in the hands of their enemies.
[5:29] SPEAKER_02: They think of fever and smallpox, they think of your black robes, and they see death.
[5:35] SPEAKER_04: And that is why we must be full of joy.
[5:38] SPEAKER_04: They must see life, Christ's life on our faces.
[5:42] SPEAKER_04: His love in our hands.
[5:45] SPEAKER_02: Take out Monsieur Kuteau.
[5:48] SPEAKER_02: Guillaume Kuteau.
[5:50] SPEAKER_02: It's a pleasure to meet you.
[5:51] SPEAKER_04: Isaac Jogs.
[5:53] SPEAKER_04: Take out Guillaume Couture.
[5:55] SPEAKER_04: Look around.
[5:57] SPEAKER_04: The Huron and Algonquin men here with us are converts.
[6:01] SPEAKER_16: Room for one more.
[6:02] SPEAKER_02: Monsieur Cupil.
[6:04] SPEAKER_02: Father, this is Renee Cupil.
[6:07] SPEAKER_02: A skilled physician and a better man.
[6:10] SPEAKER_04: Well, we're the perfect trio.
[6:12] SPEAKER_04: I'll tend to the souls.
[6:14] SPEAKER_04: Renee can tend to the body.
[6:16] SPEAKER_04: Guillaume?
[6:17] SPEAKER_04: I'll keep you two in line.
[6:21] SPEAKER_04: Fair enough.
[6:30] SPEAKER_04: And so we began our journey back together.
[6:33] SPEAKER_04: Little did we know that as the sun sank below the tree line and the path became unfamiliar, danger lurked ahead.
[6:49] SPEAKER_04: I have a bad feeling about this.
[6:51] SPEAKER_04: I told you that jerky was spoiled.
[6:54] SPEAKER_04: No, I uh I sense it too.
[6:57] SPEAKER_04: Fear not, my friends.
[6:58] SPEAKER_04: The owls are simply playing us a little flute.
[7:02] SPEAKER_16: I wish I could hear them.
[7:04] SPEAKER_16: You can't?
[7:05] SPEAKER_16: I'm going deaf.
[7:06] SPEAKER_16: In fact, it's it kept me from my doctorate, from joining the Jesuits.
[7:11] SPEAKER_16: They need strong, healthy men like you, not half the deaf oxen like me.
[7:18] SPEAKER_04: God has chosen the weak to defeat the strong, and the foolish to confound the wise.
[7:24] SPEAKER_04: He will use you as he sees fit, and you needn't feel the less for it.
[7:30] SPEAKER_04: Besides, better a physician have eyes than ears.
[7:35] SPEAKER_16: Thank you, Father.
[7:37] SPEAKER_16: Did you see that?
[7:38] SPEAKER_16: Yes, it was the Hurons, but where are they going in such a hurry?
[7:42] SPEAKER_16: Into the woods.
[7:43] SPEAKER_02: They're hiding.
[7:45] SPEAKER_02: But why?
[7:48] SPEAKER_02: It's the Iroquois.
[7:49] SPEAKER_02: Run.
[7:50] SPEAKER_02: Run, brothers.
[8:11] SPEAKER_03: No more, Gion.
[8:18] SPEAKER_11: You killed one of our men.
[8:20] SPEAKER_11: Shoot again.
[8:22] SPEAKER_11: And we will kill both of yours.
[8:24] SPEAKER_02: If you take them captive, you'll have to take me with them.
[8:28] SPEAKER_11: Perhaps you do not know what awaits captives of the mighty Mohawk of the Iroquois nation.
[8:34] SPEAKER_04: We have heard enough stories of your tortures to know what lies ahead.
[8:38] SPEAKER_04: But if God wills it, so may it be done.
[8:48] SPEAKER_16: Father, we are bound and being led to certain torture and slavery.
[8:53] SPEAKER_16: How can you smile?
[8:54] SPEAKER_04: Don't you see, Renee?
[8:56] SPEAKER_04: It's my Christmas morning.
[8:59] SPEAKER_04: We get to bring the Lord to our captors.
[9:06] SPEAKER_04: The truth is, I was terrified.
[9:11] SPEAKER_04: I knew Rene was right.
[9:14] SPEAKER_04: But I believed I oped in my Christmas too.
[9:18] SPEAKER_04: When I was tempted to doubt, I took comfort in an old memory.
[9:29] SPEAKER_14: Here comes the wave.
[9:31] SPEAKER_14: Band down the hashes.
[9:33] SPEAKER_14: Oh where are you sailing to?
[9:37] SPEAKER_14: Far away.
[9:38] SPEAKER_14: Across the entire ocean on a mission.
[9:42] SPEAKER_14: Oh, across the ocean.
[9:45] SPEAKER_13: And why do you want to go?
[9:46] SPEAKER_13: All the way across the ocean, little one.
[9:49] SPEAKER_13: To be a knight.
[9:50] SPEAKER_13: A knight, hmm?
[9:52] SPEAKER_13: But won't your armor get rusty on the ship?
[9:56] SPEAKER_14: No, help me drive a low deck.
[9:58] SPEAKER_14: France needs knights at home, you know.
[10:01] SPEAKER_13: You would make a fine knight here.
[10:05] SPEAKER_14: But how can I reach the lost sheep from all the way over here?
[10:10] SPEAKER_14: What kind of mission do you mean, little one?
[10:13] SPEAKER_14: To bring our lord to those who don't know him in faraway lands.
[10:18] SPEAKER_13: Uh well.
[10:21] SPEAKER_14: Even missionaries need to wash behind their ears.
[10:26] SPEAKER_14: Okay.
[10:39] SPEAKER_04: We were tortured and enslaved for months.
[10:43] SPEAKER_04: But through it all, we kept the light of Christ kindled within our hearts.
[10:48] SPEAKER_04: And in turn, it sparked the Iroquois curiosity.
[10:53] SPEAKER_14: You are strange men, you know.
[10:56] SPEAKER_14: You do not hide from the sufferings we inflict on you.
[11:00] SPEAKER_04: When we endure gratefully, we imitate our Lord.
[11:04] SPEAKER_02: His passion gave meaning to our suffering, and his crucifixion saves us from death.
[11:10] SPEAKER_13: What is this cruci?
[11:14] SPEAKER_04: It is how our Lord was tortured.
[11:17] SPEAKER_04: They nailed him to a tree.
[11:20] SPEAKER_16: We remind ourselves that this torture, that this death is not the end by marking ourselves in the shape of the cross.
[11:28] SPEAKER_16: Like this.
[11:30] SPEAKER_16: Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
[11:35] SPEAKER_16: Father, Son, Holy Spirit.
[11:39] SPEAKER_16: That's right.
[11:46] SPEAKER_06: Oh dear.
[11:49] SPEAKER_06: You are teaching my boy your cursors.
[11:52] SPEAKER_16: The sign of the cross is not a curse, it is a blessing.
[11:56] SPEAKER_16: Give it up now.
[11:59] SPEAKER_04: The sign of the cross is worthy of adoration and could not do anything but good to those who should use it.
[12:07] SPEAKER_04: We have no intention of giving it up.
[12:10] SPEAKER_06: Then you will have this.
[12:40] SPEAKER_04: I don't think so, Father.
[12:43] SPEAKER_04: It's just a cut.
[12:44] SPEAKER_04: Once we stop the bleeding, we'll be able to.
[12:46] SPEAKER_16: Listen, I've learned from medicine to know my final blow when I when I received it.
[12:57] SPEAKER_16: I only wish I could have could have served you and our Lord more.
[13:07] SPEAKER_04: Oh Rene.
[13:09] SPEAKER_04: You have served as bravely as any man could opt to.
[13:16] SPEAKER_04: Almighty and eternal God.
[13:19] SPEAKER_04: See how our brother Rene is strengthened by your infinite compassion and mercy.
[13:24] SPEAKER_04: Father Isaac.
[13:26] SPEAKER_16: These are the vows of a Jesuit.
[13:30] SPEAKER_04: Yes, they are.
[13:33] SPEAKER_04: Do you vow to his divine majesty before the most holy Virgin Mary and the entire heavenly court?
[13:42] SPEAKER_04: Perpetual chastity, poverty, and obedience in the society of Jesus.
[13:49] SPEAKER_04: To my last breath.
[13:52] SPEAKER_04: Yes.
[13:54] SPEAKER_04: Do you promise to enter the same society to spend your life in it forever?
[14:00] SPEAKER_04: And do.
[14:01] SPEAKER_04: Therefore, by his boundless goodness and mercy, and through the blood of Jesus Christ, we humbly ask that you judge this tortured commitment of Anna acceptable.
[14:15] SPEAKER_04: And that you have freely given him the desire to make this offering so awesome and you give him the abundant grace to fulfill it.
[14:27] SPEAKER_16: Amen.
[14:41] SPEAKER_04: May Christ who was crucified for you bring you freedom and peace.
[14:47] SPEAKER_04: I commend you, my dear Renee, to Almighty God.
[14:54] SPEAKER_16: This day I shall be with him in prads.
[15:17] SPEAKER_04: He deserves the name of martyr.
[15:20] SPEAKER_04: Not because he had been murdered while laboring in ardent charity, but most of all, because he was killed for making the sign of their cross.
[15:30] SPEAKER_04: Though they spared my life that day.
[15:33] SPEAKER_04: They took my thumb and first finger from my right hand.
[15:37] SPEAKER_04: But it was not the injury itself that brought me the most agony.
[15:41] SPEAKER_04: It was that, since I could not now hold the precious host in my right hand, I could no longer celebrate Mass.
[15:51] SPEAKER_04: For quite some time it went like this.
[15:54] SPEAKER_04: The Iroquois inventing more cruel and unusual ways to break me.
[16:00] SPEAKER_04: But Christ was broken too.
[16:02] SPEAKER_04: And I trusted I would rise with him on the last day.
[16:07] SPEAKER_04: Little to my knowledge were that spread of what I had endured.
[16:11] SPEAKER_04: And a kindly Dutch governor was moved with pity.
[16:15] SPEAKER_04: He asked a plan to set me free, tricking the Iroquois to bring me to the coast when they came to trade.
[16:22] SPEAKER_04: And then, in the dead of night, a brave soul came to my rescue.
[16:29] SPEAKER_06: Shh!
[16:30] SPEAKER_04: Father Joke!
[16:32] SPEAKER_06: Father Joke, wake up! Shh! My name is Arendt Van Koel.
[16:42] SPEAKER_06: You're in my barn, but you mustn't stay here.
[16:47] SPEAKER_06: Yonder is a vessel at anchor, which will sail in a few days.
[16:50] SPEAKER_06: Enter into it secretly.
[16:53] SPEAKER_06: It's going first to Virginia, and then we'll carry you to Bordeaux or to La Rochelle, where it is to land.
[16:59] SPEAKER_04: I cannot.
[17:00] SPEAKER_04: I must stay to aid in the salvation of souls.
[17:04] SPEAKER_06: No, no, my boy, please! You're withering away.
[17:09] SPEAKER_06: You must go back to France.
[17:11] SPEAKER_06: Then you can do whatever you think God demands.
[17:15] SPEAKER_06: Here, give me your hand.
[17:20] SPEAKER_06: What's left of it?
[17:23] SPEAKER_06: I had heard, but I didn't think.
[17:29] SPEAKER_06: Lord have mercy! You are a martyr.
[17:34] SPEAKER_04: A living martyr.
[17:36] SPEAKER_04: Monsieur Van Khler.
[17:38] SPEAKER_04: You aren't.
[17:39] SPEAKER_04: You couldn't be a Catholic, could you?
[17:42] SPEAKER_04: No.
[17:44] SPEAKER_06: But I can tell a man who has given everything, who has laid down his life for Jesus.
[17:51] SPEAKER_06: You're not dead yet, father.
[17:54] SPEAKER_06: But a martyr you are, with more story to tell.
[18:07] SPEAKER_04: So I sent off across the ocean and on to France.
[18:25] SPEAKER_04: When the ship finally pulled into port, I staggered with what little strength I had left to my Jesuit college in Rhine.
[18:34] SPEAKER_04: A thick, unkempt beard hid my face, and my broken, weary body struggled to put one foot in front of the other.
[18:43] SPEAKER_04: Last I rounded the corner and saw the dim glow of the light from the college.
[18:48] SPEAKER_04: I approached the door, raised the familiar heavy door knocker, and let it fall.
[19:02] SPEAKER_05: What do you mean, knocking at this time of night?
[19:05] SPEAKER_05: Please come back in the morning.
[19:09] SPEAKER_04: I have just returned from New France.
[19:11] SPEAKER_05: New France?
[19:14] SPEAKER_05: Tell me.
[19:14] SPEAKER_05: Tell me how is Father Isaac?
[19:17] SPEAKER_05: It has been so long since I have seen him.
[19:19] SPEAKER_05: Is he still alive?
[19:23] SPEAKER_05: He is But how do you know?
[19:27] SPEAKER_04: Because it is Father Isaac that stands before you.
[19:34] SPEAKER_01: Oh dear Isaac! Someone call the doctor.
[19:38] SPEAKER_01: Father Isaac is home.
[19:57] SPEAKER_13: There, there.
[19:58] SPEAKER_13: Shh Mother I'm right here.
[20:04] SPEAKER_13: Oh Isaac.
[20:07] SPEAKER_13: I thought I'd never see you again as did I No, no.
[20:19] SPEAKER_04: Don't cry Only you, mother, could admonish my tears through your own.
[20:29] SPEAKER_13: And only you could make light in a moment like this.
[20:45] SPEAKER_04: I was home.
[20:47] SPEAKER_04: A place I never thought I would see again.
[20:50] SPEAKER_04: And yet there I was.
[20:53] SPEAKER_04: In time I found that the stories of my sufferings and torture had reached the Jesuits in France, the French government, and even the Pope.
[21:03] SPEAKER_04: The glory didn't sit well.
[21:06] SPEAKER_04: But it was the Lord's will that the accounts be told.
[21:09] SPEAKER_08: Madame Joc, Madame Joc, a letter for you.
[21:13] SPEAKER_13: Young man, please come back another day.
[21:16] SPEAKER_13: My son, my dear boy who was the last, is now found, and I cannot fail to leave his side.
[21:24] SPEAKER_08: But Madame Jouk, it is from Rome.
[21:27] SPEAKER_08: Rome?
[21:28] SPEAKER_08: And Madam, it bears the papal seal.
[21:41] SPEAKER_13: It is from the Holy Father himself.
[21:45] SPEAKER_04: Mother.
[21:46] SPEAKER_04: Is everything all right?
[21:50] SPEAKER_13: Isaac! My son! A letter comes to you from his holiness.
[21:55] SPEAKER_04: What?
[21:56] SPEAKER_13: Here! Open it! Open it!
[22:01] SPEAKER_04: Oh my prayer has been answered.
[22:04] SPEAKER_04: He has given me dispensation to say mass again.
[22:07] SPEAKER_04: Oh Lord Jesus, thank you.
[22:10] SPEAKER_13: Oh, that is wonderful.
[22:12] SPEAKER_13: You will say mass and the old down will come.
[22:16] SPEAKER_04: Mother, when I am better, I will say mass in New France.
[22:22] SPEAKER_13: What?
[22:23] SPEAKER_13: No! Isaac, no! I have only just had you back.
[22:27] SPEAKER_13: You cannot return to the Huron.
[22:29] SPEAKER_04: No.
[22:29] SPEAKER_04: Not to the Huron.
[22:32] SPEAKER_04: To the Mohawk.
[22:33] SPEAKER_04: And to the Iroquois.
[22:35] SPEAKER_13: What are you saying?
[22:37] SPEAKER_13: To the men who did all of this to you?
[22:41] SPEAKER_04: Yes.
[22:43] SPEAKER_13: No.
[22:43] SPEAKER_13: No, you will not go back.
[22:46] SPEAKER_13: You must not.
[22:48] SPEAKER_13: I I forbid it.
[22:50] SPEAKER_04: The Lord has returned to me his hands to carry out his work.
[22:54] SPEAKER_04: And to bring it to completion is my only desire.
[22:58] SPEAKER_13: No, you can't.
[23:00] SPEAKER_13: The Lord cannot ask me to give you up again.
[23:02] SPEAKER_13: No, I won't.
[23:04] SPEAKER_13: I won't.
[23:05] SPEAKER_04: The Lord never asks us to give more than he did.
[23:08] SPEAKER_04: And he would never ask more of you than he asked of his own mother.
[23:16] SPEAKER_13: Oh my son.
[23:19] SPEAKER_13: My dear son, have pity on me.
[23:24] SPEAKER_13: But how can you ask such a thing?
[23:27] SPEAKER_04: I'm not asking for me.
[23:29] SPEAKER_04: I'm asking for them.
[23:31] SPEAKER_13: Oh, but why does it have to be you?
[23:34] SPEAKER_04: I have baptized more than 60, several of whom have arrived in heaven.
[23:40] SPEAKER_04: I know no mother dreams of their son far away, not knowing what might befall him out there all alone.
[23:48] SPEAKER_04: But these men too are sons of mothers.
[23:52] SPEAKER_13: You truly believe this is what he asks of you.
[23:57] SPEAKER_13: Of us?
[24:00] SPEAKER_04: Yes, I know he does.
[24:04] SPEAKER_04: I will petition the Father General to let me go to my captors.
[24:13] SPEAKER_13: You are the one to be sent on this mission.
[24:17] SPEAKER_13: You shall go, but not return.
[24:22] SPEAKER_04: We must do that in our life, which we would have wished that we did at the moment of our death.
[24:32] SPEAKER_12: Is this then to be our last embrace?
[24:37] SPEAKER_04: Of course not.
[24:39] SPEAKER_04: Take out, Mother.
[24:41] SPEAKER_04: Do we not confess?
[24:43] SPEAKER_04: Whoever should believe in him shall not perish, but have eternal life.
[24:53] SPEAKER_13: We do.
[24:54] SPEAKER_13: We do.
[24:56] unknown: We do.
[25:14] SPEAKER_04: So when I recovered, I returned to America.
[25:19] SPEAKER_04: Not to the Huron or the Adgonquin, but to the Mohawk.
[25:24] SPEAKER_04: As I entered the Mohawk village, I felt at peace.
[25:30] SPEAKER_04: A strength and calm came over me that fascinated some and enraged others.
[25:37] SPEAKER_04: But that no one could deny.
[25:41] SPEAKER_11: What?
[25:43] SPEAKER_11: It cannot be.
[25:45] SPEAKER_11: The black robe has returned.
[25:48] SPEAKER_04: My entire life I had been praying for this moment.
[25:58] SPEAKER_14: Where are you sailing to?
[26:01] SPEAKER_14: To bring our Lord to those who don't know him to follow him lands.
[26:08] SPEAKER_10: So Yoga, the Father, is the creator.
[26:14] SPEAKER_10: And he's also the Son and also the Great Spirit.
[26:21] SPEAKER_04: And he became man.
[26:23] SPEAKER_04: But when that love was rejected, it became an offering for his brothers.
[26:30] SPEAKER_04: The sign of the cross is worthy of adoration.
[26:33] SPEAKER_04: It could not do anything but good to those who should use it.
[26:37] SPEAKER_04: We have no intention of giving it up.
[26:42] SPEAKER_04: We must do that in our life, which we would have wished that we did at the moment of our death.
[27:13] SPEAKER_06: There, look.
[27:16] SPEAKER_03: Oh no, this is my mask.
[27:18] SPEAKER_03: A gift from my mother, and now a gift to you.
[27:22] SPEAKER_03: Stop him.
[27:25] SPEAKER_03: I'll do it.
[27:27] SPEAKER_03: Ahano, I know you.
[27:30] SPEAKER_03: You listened to Rene Gopil.
[27:32] SPEAKER_03: You sat with me at your auntie's home.
[27:34] SPEAKER_03: You know me.
[27:36] SPEAKER_03: Father.
[27:39] SPEAKER_03: Finish him.
[27:41] SPEAKER_03: You don't have to do this.
[27:44] SPEAKER_03: Do it.
[27:48] SPEAKER_07: Father.
[27:50] SPEAKER_04: They know not what they do.
[28:18] SPEAKER_04: October 18th, 1646 was the happiest day of my earthly life.
[28:25] SPEAKER_04: For it began my eternal one.
[28:29] SPEAKER_04: But my story didn't end there.
[28:32] SPEAKER_04: You see, not long after my death, the young man that took my life, Ahanu, was captured and held prisoner by another tribe.
[28:41] SPEAKER_04: While he was held prisoner, he began to boast and brag that it was by his hand that my life had ended.
[28:49] SPEAKER_04: His story traveled quickly, and when my Jesuit brothers heard it, they asked that Ahanu be released into their care.
[28:57] SPEAKER_04: Once Ahanu was taken in by the Jesuits, he let his defenses down and wept bitterly in regret and remorse for what he had done.
[29:08] SPEAKER_04: The Jesuits gave him the same mercy and compassion our Lord had for the good thief on the cross.
[29:15] SPEAKER_04: Ahanu was baptized and took the baptismal name Isaac Jogs.
[29:24] SPEAKER_04: One week later, he was killed.
[29:28] SPEAKER_04: After a word, one of the missionary priests said, God willing, there are now two Isaac Jogs in heaven.
[29:38] SPEAKER_04: Now, if you remember anything about my story, I want you to remember this.
[29:47] SPEAKER_04: Jesus Christ is our true greatness.
[29:50] SPEAKER_04: It is he alone and his cross that should be sought.
[29:55] SPEAKER_04: For if you strive for anything else, you will gain naught.
[30:00] SPEAKER_04: But having found Jesus Christ in his cross, you have found the roses in the thoughts, sweetness in bitterness, everything in nothing.
