[0:02] SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Saints Alive, where we take you with us to meet God's most heroic followers.
[0:08] SPEAKER_01: The saints were just ordinary boys and girls who allowed God's love to transform them into real life superheroes.
[0:15] SPEAKER_01: Their love for God changed our world.
[0:18] SPEAKER_01: Did you know that God has sent you here to become a saint?
[0:21] SPEAKER_01: It's up to you to choose love over fear, to be courageous, faithful, and kind.
[0:26] SPEAKER_01: The choice to become a saint won't be easy, but it will be worth it.
[0:30] SPEAKER_01: So listen closely and open your hearts.
[0:33] SPEAKER_01: These real life tales of the saints from the past may just inspire you how to live your story.
[0:39] SPEAKER_01: Let's go on this adventure together.
[1:15] SPEAKER_01: And it was time to hike back down.
[1:28] SPEAKER_14: As the sun began its slow descent to the horizon, Pier Giorgio, in his inimitable, gentle way, led his friends in praying the rosary.
[1:39] SPEAKER_14: In the glow of a magnificent sunset, they picked up their rucksacks, ropes, things, and canteens and started down the mountain.
[1:48] SPEAKER_14: A short distance from the bottom, Giorgio heard a cry of pain from behind him.
[1:55] SPEAKER_22: Ow! My ankle.
[2:00] SPEAKER_10: Are you all right?
[2:03] SPEAKER_22: I twisted my ankle.
[2:05] SPEAKER_22: It's okay.
[2:06] SPEAKER_22: Don't wait for me.
[2:08] SPEAKER_22: You can keep going.
[2:09] SPEAKER_10: No, let's sit and rest.
[2:11] SPEAKER_10: We have an hour more of light and not too much farther to go.
[2:14] SPEAKER_10: I would never leave a fellow Tipiloski behind, especially one as shady as you.
[2:21] SPEAKER_02: Don't make me laugh, Giorgio.
[2:24] SPEAKER_02: It hurts.
[2:25] SPEAKER_02: I think I can start walking slowly.
[2:32] SPEAKER_10: Take my hand.
[2:33] SPEAKER_10: I'll help you down.
[2:35] SPEAKER_02: Thank you.
[2:37] SPEAKER_10: I see you with your brother a lot.
[2:40] SPEAKER_10: How old is he now?
[2:41] SPEAKER_02: Giovanni?
[2:42] SPEAKER_02: He's 14 soon.
[2:44] SPEAKER_10: Fourteen?
[2:45] SPEAKER_10: I'm sure he's keeping your parents busy.
[2:49] SPEAKER_02: Well, our parents passed away a few years ago.
[2:53] SPEAKER_02: So it is just he and I, but we are close, so it is not a burden.
[2:58] SPEAKER_10: He's lucky to have you.
[3:00] SPEAKER_02: I'm just grateful we have each other.
[3:03] SPEAKER_10: Laura, I noticed at the top you did not have a rosary.
[3:06] SPEAKER_10: Here, take mine.
[3:08] SPEAKER_02: Oh, this is too beautiful! I can't.
[3:12] SPEAKER_10: Keep it in memory of me.
[3:14] SPEAKER_10: And if every time you say the rosary, you say an extra hell Mary for me, I'll be very grateful.
[3:30] SPEAKER_14: There it happened.
[3:33] SPEAKER_14: He was smitten.
[3:35] SPEAKER_14: Giorgio fell out of his ears for Laura Hidalgo.
[3:40] SPEAKER_14: But being a gentleman, he dared not yet express his feelings.
[3:45] SPEAKER_14: With his customary chivalry, he treated her with respect.
[3:50] SPEAKER_14: As a fellow T.
[3:51] SPEAKER_14: Piloski.
[3:53] SPEAKER_14: Pier Giorgio knew how to laugh with others and at himself, but when it came to the forever things, the things of the faith, he guarded them with the devotion like that of a son for his mother.
[4:12] SPEAKER_14: At this time in Italy, the fascists became stronger and would harass priests and disrupt churches.
[4:21] SPEAKER_14: On a warm day in September, Giorgio and his friends were attending a procession through the streets of Turin.
[4:28] SPEAKER_14: Giorgio's head was on a swivel, his eyes on the lookout for trouble.
[4:40] SPEAKER_14: As the procession made its way down the Via Santa Chiara, out from the crowded sidewalk stepped a small group of men in black shirts.
[4:54] SPEAKER_11: You think your friends and processions can stop what's coming?
[4:57] SPEAKER_10: Whatever comes, Jesus is with us.
[5:00] SPEAKER_10: We have nothing to fear.
[5:02] SPEAKER_11: Aren't you the senator's son?
[5:04] SPEAKER_11: The rich Frasati kid.
[5:06] SPEAKER_11: Hey, is it that Run's the last time a newspaper?
[5:09] SPEAKER_11: Well, we know where your family stands, and we know where you live.
[5:13] SPEAKER_11: We'll give you something to fear.
[5:16] SPEAKER_10: The Prince of Peace will have nothing but just that peace on his way to the cathedral.
[5:25] SPEAKER_11: Sleep tight.
[5:26] SPEAKER_11: Come on, let's go, boys.
[5:34] SPEAKER_14: Giorgio kept his eyes on the men as they departed through the crowd.
[5:39] SPEAKER_14: Only for a moment did the pity he felt for them show on his face.
[5:44] SPEAKER_14: Then he turned and walked on with the procession.
[5:50] SPEAKER_14: Only several weeks later, those fascists made good on their promise to return.
[5:55] SPEAKER_14: Pier Giorgio was sitting down for lunch with mama and our housekeeper, Maritia.
[6:02] SPEAKER_04: Pier Giorgio, when is your next exam?
[6:05] SPEAKER_10: Next week, hydraulics.
[6:08] SPEAKER_10: I hope.
[6:10] SPEAKER_04: I wonder who that could be.
[6:13] SPEAKER_18: I will get the door, George! We gotta take it money!
[6:30] SPEAKER_05: Mama, lock the door behind me.
[6:41] SPEAKER_14: George was too ball, strong, and ready to fight.
[6:47] SPEAKER_14: They took the group of scoundrels, but I'm surprised that they coward me.
[6:59] SPEAKER_11: I think we underestimated you.
[7:01] SPEAKER_05: That's the first thing we've agreed upon.
[7:03] SPEAKER_05: The door's behind you.
[7:05] SPEAKER_05: Now get out, all of you.
[7:14] SPEAKER_10: Cowards Marisha!
[7:20] SPEAKER_12: Oh Giorgio I'm okay.
[7:24] SPEAKER_12: I'm right here.
[7:25] SPEAKER_12: Marisha I'm fine, Giorgio.
[7:29] SPEAKER_12: I am fine.
[7:31] SPEAKER_12: Thank you.
[7:33] SPEAKER_14: As a man of peace, Giorgio hated violence.
[7:38] SPEAKER_14: But when it came to his friends, family, and his faith, he defended them zealously.
[7:47] SPEAKER_14: Over time, Pier Giorgio's love for God and the poor deepened.
[7:52] SPEAKER_14: Yet a new love had seated itself in his well-guarded heart.
[7:59] SPEAKER_14: During the Tipilowski excursions, he found himself drawn more and more to Laura Hidalgo.
[8:08] SPEAKER_14: Everything about her, her virtue, devotion to her brother, her love of God and her commitment to works of charity all commanded his admiration.
[8:21] SPEAKER_14: One day he came to me with his great black eyes and told me he was in love.
[8:35] SPEAKER_14: Well, have you told her how you feel?
[8:40] SPEAKER_10: No, of course not.
[8:42] SPEAKER_10: Not even the slightest.
[8:46] SPEAKER_10: Unless Mama and Papa would accept her.
[8:49] SPEAKER_10: It wouldn't be right to treat her like that.
[8:52] SPEAKER_14: Giorgio, I I do not know how this can happen.
[8:59] SPEAKER_14: It does not matter how deeply you love her.
[9:03] SPEAKER_14: Mama and Papa will never agree to this.
[9:12] SPEAKER_10: Luciano, with time, do you think they would accept her?
[9:16] SPEAKER_10: Is there any way?
[9:19] SPEAKER_14: No.
[9:21] SPEAKER_14: You two are from different worlds.
[9:26] SPEAKER_10: But the poor and the rich live in the same world.
[9:30] SPEAKER_10: And how much more blessed are the poor?
[9:33] SPEAKER_14: You know things between Mama and Papa are very strained.
[9:36] SPEAKER_14: If you pursue Laura, I fear it would be the last straw for their marriage.
[9:43] SPEAKER_10: I know, I know.
[9:45] SPEAKER_10: You will be married in a month, then we will be all alone.
[9:49] SPEAKER_10: I cannot hurt Mama like this.
[9:52] SPEAKER_14: Try not to see her.
[9:55] SPEAKER_14: It will only make things worse.
[9:59] SPEAKER_09: If I go to the mountains on Sunday, she will be there too.
[10:03] SPEAKER_09: How can I not go?
[10:05] SPEAKER_09: Should I telephone her?
[10:07] SPEAKER_09: Write her?
[10:08] SPEAKER_14: I don't know, but try to make this sacrifice for mama and papa.
[10:30] SPEAKER_14: Shortly after I was married, Pier Giorgio found himself alone in a cold, lonely house with our parents.
[10:40] SPEAKER_14: Every moment of happiness in my new marriage reminded me of his solitude.
[10:47] SPEAKER_14: I wrote to him, and a week later I received a reply.
[10:53] SPEAKER_10: Dear my little sister Luciana, I pray you are well and enjoying your new marriage.
[10:59] SPEAKER_10: You ask me if I'm happy.
[11:01] SPEAKER_10: I strive to be, yes.
[11:03] SPEAKER_10: As long as my faith gives me strength, I'm happy.
[11:07] SPEAKER_10: Sadness should be banned from Catholic souls.
[11:10] SPEAKER_10: Sadness is a disease worse than any other.
[11:13] SPEAKER_10: But the end which we are created for shows us the way, which may be full of thorns, but is not sad.
[11:20] SPEAKER_10: It is happy even through the pain.
[11:33] SPEAKER_14: On June 7th, 1925, to revive his spirits, Giorgio went to the mountains.
[11:41] SPEAKER_14: When he and Marco came to the most difficult leg of the climb, the Placa Santi, Giorgio sat down among the rocks, his face pain.
[11:58] SPEAKER_06: What's the matter?
[12:02] SPEAKER_10: Even though I'm up in the mountains, my spirit is in the depths.
[12:06] SPEAKER_10: Is it your exams?
[12:09] SPEAKER_10: No, it's my grandmother.
[12:11] SPEAKER_10: She's very ill.
[12:12] SPEAKER_10: And Luciana, her comforting presence, is a thousand miles away.
[12:17] SPEAKER_10: It feels as though she's gone forever.
[12:20] SPEAKER_06: I'm sorry, Giorgio.
[12:22] SPEAKER_06: I know you are going through a lot.
[12:24] SPEAKER_06: What can I do?
[12:26] SPEAKER_10: Pray for me, Marco.
[12:28] SPEAKER_10: That God may give me an iron will that does not bend or fail in his projects.
[12:33] SPEAKER_06: You know you always have my prayers.
[12:36] SPEAKER_06: We are the Tibiloski after all.
[12:39] SPEAKER_06: Are you ready to keep going?
[12:41] SPEAKER_06: This mountain is not going to hike itself.
[12:45] SPEAKER_10: I suppose not.
[12:46] SPEAKER_10: I'm just so worn with worry.
[12:49] SPEAKER_06: Let me say another thing.
[12:51] SPEAKER_06: As the terror of the Tibiloski, I must tell you what you once told me when I was tempted to turn back.
[13:04] SPEAKER_06: Come, Giorgio.
[13:12] SPEAKER_10: Okay, Marco, help me up.
[13:52] SPEAKER_20: I have a dependable Pierre Giorgio.
[13:56] SPEAKER_20: What would I do without you?
[13:58] SPEAKER_10: God and his angels would take care of you, Converso.
[14:01] SPEAKER_10: I've got those injections.
[14:02] SPEAKER_10: I hope you didn't run out.
[14:04] SPEAKER_10: How are you feeling these days?
[14:07] SPEAKER_20: As bad as the day before.
[14:10] SPEAKER_10: Well, I know what will lift your spirits.
[14:18] SPEAKER_20: What is that?
[14:20] SPEAKER_20: You know I have a sweet tooth.
[14:26] SPEAKER_20: I know you visit other houses after you visit me.
[14:30] SPEAKER_10: Converso, you sneak! Have you been spying on me?
[14:34] SPEAKER_20: Giorgio, be careful.
[14:36] SPEAKER_20: There is something going around, some sickness.
[14:40] SPEAKER_20: It's terrible.
[14:41] SPEAKER_20: You must take care of yourself.
[14:44] SPEAKER_20: Go home from here.
[14:45] SPEAKER_20: Go straight home.
[14:47] SPEAKER_20: No more visits tonight.
[14:50] SPEAKER_10: So you're kicking me out, huh?
[14:53] SPEAKER_10: You will wear yourself out.
[14:56] SPEAKER_20: You look exhausted.
[14:58] SPEAKER_20: Look at your clothes, a practically threadbare.
[15:02] SPEAKER_20: Once you're well rested, come visit me.
[15:08] SPEAKER_10: Okay.
[15:09] SPEAKER_10: Well take the rest of the chocolate and telephone me if you need anything.
[15:14] SPEAKER_20: God bless you, dear Giorgio.
[15:23] SPEAKER_14: Converso watched Giorgio as his young, strong frame disappeared into the blackness of the night, his rosary swinging at his side.
[15:41] SPEAKER_14: One week later, I was called on to During because of our grandmother's rapidly failing health.
[15:48] SPEAKER_14: Our family's attention was so absorbed by her suffering that we didn't even notice the disease which began to spread through Giorgio's strong body.
[16:03] SPEAKER_04: Has anybody seen Pierre Giorgio?
[16:05] SPEAKER_04: It's nearly nine o'clock.
[16:07] SPEAKER_04: I think he's still in his room.
[16:09] SPEAKER_04: That is not like him at all.
[16:11] SPEAKER_04: He is always up before dawn, and morning mass is starting soon.
[16:16] SPEAKER_04: Lutana, will you check on him?
[16:25] SPEAKER_10: Your footsteps become heavier since being married.
[16:28] SPEAKER_10: I heard you from across the house.
[16:31] SPEAKER_14: What are you still doing in bed?
[16:36] SPEAKER_14: Are you feeling already?
[16:40] SPEAKER_10: I cannot always be as handsome as the day before.
[16:43] SPEAKER_10: I'm fine, just a bit stiff as all.
[16:46] SPEAKER_13: Well, get dressed then.
[16:48] SPEAKER_13: It is your favorite feast day.
[16:51] SPEAKER_13: You'll be late for us.
[16:57] SPEAKER_14: Two days passed, and Giorgio silently endured his pain, for he still wanted to spare us any worry.
[17:08] SPEAKER_14: How are you today, Giorgio?
[17:12] SPEAKER_10: I'm not well.
[17:14] SPEAKER_10: I slept very little.
[17:16] SPEAKER_14: Giorgio, you must rest.
[17:20] SPEAKER_14: Nona is well.
[17:24] SPEAKER_14: Just get better for mama.
[17:27] SPEAKER_14: She needs you.
[17:28] SPEAKER_08: Luciana, please tell me.
[17:30] SPEAKER_08: How is Nona?
[17:33] SPEAKER_07: Oh Giorgio.
[17:36] SPEAKER_07: She won't be with us much longer.
[17:47] SPEAKER_14: Pale, weak, and wrapped in a big plaid blanket, with his rosary in hand, Giorgio made his way to the far-off bedroom.
[17:58] SPEAKER_14: His unsteady steps creaked as he staggered down the hallway, grasping the wall for support.
[18:05] SPEAKER_14: Three times he fell, each time struggling to stand.
[18:11] SPEAKER_14: When he arrived at her room, he knelt by her bed, raising his big eyes, swollen from pain, to grandmother's ashen face.
[18:23] SPEAKER_14: To our astonishment, she opened her eyes.
[18:33] SPEAKER_08: Thank you, Nona, for everything.
[18:36] SPEAKER_08: I love you.
[18:38] SPEAKER_14: Then she went back to unconsciousness to wait for death, which came shortly after.
[18:51] SPEAKER_14: The next morning began grandmother's funeral preparations, our eyes still blind to Pier Giorgio's suffering.
[19:09] SPEAKER_04: You are letting yourself go.
[19:11] SPEAKER_04: If you want to get well, you must get hold of yourself.
[19:14] SPEAKER_10: I will try.
[19:29] SPEAKER_04: Luciana, Marissa! Come quickly help me get him back to bed.
[19:37] SPEAKER_04: Luciana, you and Papa go to the burial in Polone.
[19:40] SPEAKER_04: I must remain here with Pierre Giorgio.
[19:42] SPEAKER_04: Something is wrong.
[19:44] SPEAKER_04: He needs me.
[19:45] SPEAKER_04: I will call for Dr.
[19:46] SPEAKER_04: Albazzi.
[20:13] SPEAKER_21: Giorgio, it's me.
[20:16] SPEAKER_21: Doctor Alvazzi.
[20:18] SPEAKER_21: Can you wait for a moment?
[20:22] SPEAKER_10: Doctor Alvazzi.
[20:23] SPEAKER_10: I think all you are here.
[20:26] SPEAKER_21: I'm so sorry about your grandmother.
[20:39] SPEAKER_10: I get out of the doctor.
[20:41] SPEAKER_10: I am so tired.
[20:49] SPEAKER_04: Get out here, Georgia.
[20:51] SPEAKER_04: No joking around.
[20:54] SPEAKER_21: Signora Fosati.
[20:55] SPEAKER_21: Please sit a body.
[21:05] SPEAKER_04: What is it, Doctor?
[21:06] SPEAKER_04: What in heaven's name is wrong with my Georgia?
[21:11] SPEAKER_21: There is no easy way to say this.
[21:13] SPEAKER_21: It is serious, unmistakable.
[21:24] SPEAKER_21: There is nothing.
[21:26] SPEAKER_21: Nothing we can do.
[21:31] SPEAKER_03: It is impossible.
[21:37] SPEAKER_03: He's a strong boy.
[21:48] SPEAKER_21: No, it's only a matter of time until it takes him.
[21:54] SPEAKER_21: What we can do now is minimize his pain as best we can.
[22:18] SPEAKER_04: Luciana, tell your father you all must return home.
[22:21] SPEAKER_04: Don't ask why, just come.
[22:35] SPEAKER_07: Giorgio?
[22:39] SPEAKER_07: Your mama said you're not well.
[22:42] SPEAKER_10: I am better now that the terror of the Biloski has arrived.
[22:46] SPEAKER_10: Be serious, Giorgio.
[22:51] SPEAKER_10: How are you?
[22:53] SPEAKER_10: It is bad, Marco.
[22:55] SPEAKER_10: I do not think there is a way out of this one.
[22:59] SPEAKER_10: I am sorry.
[23:01] SPEAKER_10: I am so weak.
[23:03] SPEAKER_10: I cannot talk more.
[23:08] SPEAKER_07: Giorgio.
[23:10] SPEAKER_07: Do you remember our climb to Saint Bernard?
[23:14] SPEAKER_07: I couldn't go any further.
[23:19] SPEAKER_07: You told me to look Versolauto to the heights.
[23:29] SPEAKER_07: You went to the top and held the rope to pull us all up.
[23:36] SPEAKER_07: Versolauto, Giorgio.
[23:45] SPEAKER_07: To the heights.
[23:50] SPEAKER_07: And when you get to heaven.
[23:57] SPEAKER_07: Pull us all up.
[24:02] SPEAKER_07: Pull us up to heaven with you.
[24:06] SPEAKER_07: Giorgio.
[24:09] SPEAKER_07: You are my best friend.
[24:14] SPEAKER_07: You always will be.
[24:17] SPEAKER_07: Look to the heights, Giorgio.
[24:22] SPEAKER_07: Versolato.
[24:28] SPEAKER_14: That afternoon, Papa and I returned home.
[24:35] SPEAKER_14: As soon as I looked into my mama's tear-filled eyes, I knew.
[24:51] SPEAKER_14: Over the next day, we gave him what we denied him that whole week, our company.
[25:00] SPEAKER_14: His soul pining for the consolation of the church's sacraments, Giorgio received our Lord in the Eucharist peacefully.
[25:10] SPEAKER_14: The pallor of his forehead and brightly burning eyes indicated his spirit was already being transfigured by the lucid call of paradise.
[25:25] SPEAKER_14: What if Nona called you to be with her?
[25:32] SPEAKER_10: How happy I would be.
[25:34] SPEAKER_10: But oh, what about Mama and Papa?
[25:37] SPEAKER_14: Oh Giorgio, you won't be abandoning them.
[25:41] SPEAKER_14: From heaven, you will give them your faith.
[25:45] SPEAKER_14: We will continue to be one family.
[25:51] SPEAKER_10: Help me to make the sign of the cross.
[26:08] SPEAKER_10: May my soul rest in peace with you.
[26:12] SPEAKER_14: I kept my hand in his...
[28:50] SPEAKER_14: a sea of people.
[28:52] SPEAKER_14: Thousands swarmed about these caskets, weeping.
[28:56] SPEAKER_14: These were not the dignitaries and royalty we expected, but the poor, the tired, the forgotten, the pressed team from all directions to pay their respects to the man who had dared to be close to them.
[29:14] SPEAKER_14: Their care world features were transfigured with the same great realization that they had not a saved.
[29:25] SPEAKER_14: And that he had loved them.
[29:35] SPEAKER_19: But it was Giorgio.
[29:37] SPEAKER_19: Giorgio took care of me.
[29:40] SPEAKER_19: He took care of my children.
[29:42] SPEAKER_16: He paid for my little Teresina to go to school.
[29:46] SPEAKER_16: You see this coat I'm aware.
[29:53] SPEAKER_12: He always gives me money for food.
[29:56] SPEAKER_12: Me too.
[29:58] SPEAKER_18: He remembered me.
[30:00] SPEAKER_18: Visited me when no one else did.
[30:04] SPEAKER_18: He was a saint, senora.
[30:07] SPEAKER_18: You raised a saint.
[30:14] SPEAKER_14: As I crossed the threshold of the cathedral, I noticed a young woman, Laura Hidalgo, standing amid the throne, tears streaming down her face.
[30:26] SPEAKER_14: Between her clasped hands, Angonvenir, Rosary, upon entering the church, overwhelmed with emotion.
[30:36] SPEAKER_14: Papa embraced Mama.
[30:46] SPEAKER_16: It looks like our boy was about his father's business.
[30:52] SPEAKER_03: Yes.
[30:54] SPEAKER_03: His heavenly father's business.
[30:59] SPEAKER_03: Our boy was about his heavenly father's business.
[31:41] SPEAKER_01: They spilled out from the packed church into the streets of Turin, stopping traffic for the man that brought them to the heights.
[31:54] SPEAKER_01: Next year, in the year 2025, blessed Pier Giorgio will be declared Saint Pier Giorgio Frasati.
[32:03] SPEAKER_01: Praise God! In many ways, Pier Giorgio lived an ordinary, simple life, but he lived it with the passion and joy of Christ.
[32:15] SPEAKER_01: And that made all the difference.
[32:19] SPEAKER_01: What are ways that you can live like Pier Giorgio?
[32:23] SPEAKER_01: How can you reach for the summit and bring others along with you?
[32:27] SPEAKER_01: The reality is that each moment matters.
