## Transcript

[0:01] SPEAKER_01: Welcome back.
[0:03] SPEAKER_01: When we last left off, Paul had hurt his ankle at practice and learned about Saint Katiri.
[0:09] SPEAKER_01: Let's see what he's up to.
[0:18] SPEAKER_07: Here, Paul, let me get the door for you.
[0:21] SPEAKER_08: Thanks.
[0:22] SPEAKER_08: These crutches are less glamorous than I thought.
[0:24] SPEAKER_08: You know, I always wanted crutches as a kid, you know, to get attention, but now they're just a pain.
[0:32] SPEAKER_08: Ugh.
[0:34] SPEAKER_07: Hey, Paul.
[0:35] SPEAKER_07: Hi, Mia.
[0:36] SPEAKER_07: Good morning.
[0:37] SPEAKER_07: Hi, Mrs.
[0:37] SPEAKER_07: Bremley.
[0:38] SPEAKER_07: Thanks for the ride.
[0:39] SPEAKER_07: Of course.
[0:40] SPEAKER_08: Hey guys.
[0:41] SPEAKER_07: Morning, shuffs.
[0:43] SPEAKER_08: Uh, how's the ankle, Paul?
[0:46] SPEAKER_08: Mark said you took a really hard fall.
[0:50] SPEAKER_08: It hurts, but hopefully I'm fine.
[0:53] SPEAKER_08: I have a doctor's appointment later today.
[0:55] SPEAKER_09: Wait, wait, wait.
[0:56] SPEAKER_09: So you won't be at practice?
[0:58] SPEAKER_08: No.
[0:59] SPEAKER_09: Oh.
[1:00] SPEAKER_08: Actually, Brad, could I borrow that book again?
[1:02] SPEAKER_08: The Thing Itary one?
[1:04] SPEAKER_08: It's really good.
[1:05] SPEAKER_08: I thought it might keep me entertained at my appointment.
[1:08] SPEAKER_09: Oh.
[1:09] SPEAKER_09: That book?
[1:11] SPEAKER_09: That book was um mistakenly left at the gym.
[1:17] SPEAKER_09: Along with my backpack.
[1:19] SPEAKER_09: And yesterday's lunch.
[1:21] SPEAKER_09: Uh Brad.
[1:22] SPEAKER_09: Hey, listen.
[1:24] SPEAKER_09: I was distracted by my injured friend over here.
[1:28] SPEAKER_06: Okay, just make sure you get it today.
[1:30] SPEAKER_09: Don't worry, I will.
[1:31] SPEAKER_09: Uh, I'll remind him.
[1:33] SPEAKER_08: Hey, do you guys know what happens after the part where Katiri meets the missionaries for the first time?
[1:37] SPEAKER_07: I do.
[1:38] SPEAKER_07: I can keep telling her story on the way to school if you guys want.
[1:41] SPEAKER_07: Oh, that would be great.
[1:43] SPEAKER_08: Wait, Mia, you know about Saint Katiri.
[1:46] SPEAKER_07: Yes, she is one of my favorite saints.
[1:49] SPEAKER_07: You didn't know that?
[1:50] SPEAKER_07: No.
[1:50] SPEAKER_07: Well, anyway, so after Saint Katiri met the Black Robes.
[1:59] SPEAKER_01: Several years came and went after the Black Robes first visited the tribe, and to Tekaweta's joy, the missionary priests were able to set up a permanent camp in her village.
[2:12] SPEAKER_00: Tekawita, will you join me again today visiting Orenda?
[2:17] SPEAKER_06: I was just on my way there, Father.
[2:19] SPEAKER_00: Perfect.
[2:19] SPEAKER_00: We will go together.
[2:21] SPEAKER_00: You seem to be fond of caring for the villagers.
[2:24] SPEAKER_06: I am.
[2:25] SPEAKER_06: Somehow it gives me peace to try and help.
[2:29] SPEAKER_06: Though it is hard to watch them suffer.
[2:33] SPEAKER_06: Especially Orenda.
[2:35] SPEAKER_00: It is a mystery, my child.
[2:38] SPEAKER_00: As all suffering is.
[2:40] SPEAKER_00: But we must believe that their illness is not for death, but for the glory of God.
[2:46] SPEAKER_06: I don't understand.
[2:48] SPEAKER_00: Here.
[2:49] SPEAKER_00: Look at his crucifix.
[2:51] SPEAKER_00: Jesus himself suffered great pain and persecution too.
[2:56] SPEAKER_00: Even to the point of death.
[2:59] SPEAKER_00: He is with us in our suffering.
[3:01] SPEAKER_06: But why would he do that?
[3:03] SPEAKER_00: Because he loves you.
[3:05] SPEAKER_00: Because there is nothing Jesus would not do.
[3:08] SPEAKER_00: Nothing that he would not give or endure.
[3:11] SPEAKER_00: Just to be with you forever in heaven.
[3:15] SPEAKER_00: Come, let us see how our friend is doing.
[3:20] SPEAKER_06: How are you feeling, Orenda?
[3:24] SPEAKER_09: I fear I am too weak to be worthy of your kindness.
[3:30] SPEAKER_09: Do not waste your time on an old widow like me.
[3:35] SPEAKER_00: To love is never a waste.
[3:38] SPEAKER_00: And besides, it is not our strength that makes us worthy.
[3:43] SPEAKER_00: It is God's love for us that gives us dignity.
[3:49] SPEAKER_01: Though Tekawitha was filled with wonder and peace as she learned more about Christianity, certain members of her tribe were far from embracing this foreign faith.
[4:01] SPEAKER_01: Not so fast, young lady.
[4:04] SPEAKER_03: Where have you been?
[4:07] SPEAKER_03: It is already quite late.
[4:09] SPEAKER_06: Um I was You will look at me when you speak.
[4:13] SPEAKER_06: I was with the Black Robes Uncle.
[4:16] SPEAKER_06: They had a special service at the chapel, and I thought it would be alright if you another word.
[4:23] SPEAKER_03: You must not spend time with them.
[4:25] SPEAKER_03: They do not understand our way of life.
[4:29] SPEAKER_03: They will make a fool of you.
[4:32] SPEAKER_03: Is that what you want?
[4:34] SPEAKER_04: To cause scandal for the family of the mighty village chief.
[4:38] SPEAKER_06: No, Uncle.
[4:40] SPEAKER_04: There are more pressing matters to concern ourselves with.
[4:43] SPEAKER_04: You have chores to do, vegetables to harvest, and it is time to settle down.
[4:51] SPEAKER_06: What do you mean?
[4:53] SPEAKER_03: You know very well what I mean.
[4:56] SPEAKER_03: It is time you accepted an offer in marriage.
[4:59] SPEAKER_06: But, Uncle, you know I do not wish to marry.
[5:02] SPEAKER_03: All I know is that you have lived under my roof, free of charge for years, and that you will do as I say.
[5:12] SPEAKER_06: But I am much too young.
[5:13] SPEAKER_03: On the contrary, Takomitha, a girl of your age has no excuse.
[5:19] SPEAKER_06: Then perhaps I could have a bit more time to think over my prospects.
[5:26] SPEAKER_03: Oh very well.
[5:29] SPEAKER_03: If you must.
[5:31] SPEAKER_03: But mark my words.
[5:33] SPEAKER_03: By the next moon, you shall be wed.
[5:44] SPEAKER_05: What about Hayawatha?
[5:47] SPEAKER_05: He is an excellent hunter.
[5:49] SPEAKER_05: A big, strong man.
[5:50] SPEAKER_06: What an even bigger appetite.
[5:52] SPEAKER_06: I could never cook enough to satisfy him.
[5:55] SPEAKER_05: Fair point.
[5:58] SPEAKER_05: Well, all right, maybe Atenati.
[6:01] SPEAKER_05: He is rather handsome.
[6:02] SPEAKER_06: That man dances at festivals more than I ever danced my whole life.
[6:07] SPEAKER_06: Perhaps not.
[6:10] SPEAKER_05: But you might consider Ganitzgare.
[6:12] SPEAKER_05: His father is another chief.
[6:13] SPEAKER_05: He would provide well for you.
[6:15] SPEAKER_06: But what do we possibly have in common?
[6:17] SPEAKER_05: Why am I beginning to think that you will have a reason not to marry any of the men in our tribe?
[6:24] SPEAKER_06: I'm so sorry.
[6:26] SPEAKER_06: It's just that I really don't desire marriage.
[6:30] SPEAKER_06: If I am honest, I long to spend my days with the black robes.
[6:35] SPEAKER_06: In peace, in purity, in quiet work at prayer.
[6:39] SPEAKER_06: Dakota!
[6:41] SPEAKER_05: That is unacceptable.
[6:44] SPEAKER_05: If your uncle heard the way you speak.
[6:46] SPEAKER_06: I do not mean to disrespect him or to upset you, but I cannot ignore God's call in my heart.
[6:53] SPEAKER_05: I don't want to hear another word of this.
[6:54] SPEAKER_05: Do you understand?
[6:55] SPEAKER_06: Yes, Auntie.
[7:04] SPEAKER_01: Over the course of the next few weeks, Tekowitha successfully evaded any more talk of marriage.
[7:10] SPEAKER_01: Her aunt and uncle, however, growing weary of her constant refusals, hatched a plan of their own.
[7:17] SPEAKER_01: And you think this will work?
[7:19] SPEAKER_05: I am certain.
[7:20] SPEAKER_05: I have spoken to Gonetskari's family, and it is all arranged.
[7:23] SPEAKER_05: He is on his way.
[7:24] SPEAKER_05: And he knows to approach Takawitha and sit next to her on her mat.
[7:30] SPEAKER_05: Yes, I have instructed him in all the customary etiquette of a Niroquois proposal.
[7:35] SPEAKER_05: Takawitha will not expect it in the least.
[7:38] SPEAKER_03: And so she will be forced to accept his offer.
[7:42] SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
[7:43] SPEAKER_05: And then we can finally rest easy and know that we will be provided for in our old age.
[7:48] SPEAKER_05: Shh, here he comes now.
[7:52] SPEAKER_08: Sago, Takawitha.
[7:54] SPEAKER_06: Got it's gurry.
[7:55] SPEAKER_06: But how did you what are you doing here?
[7:58] SPEAKER_02: Very funny, Takoetha.
[8:00] SPEAKER_02: Surely you must know why I'm here.
[8:04] SPEAKER_06: Um unfortunately, I've never been good at guessing games.
[8:08] SPEAKER_06: Can you give me a hint?
[8:09] SPEAKER_06: Well, I have long admired you.
[8:13] SPEAKER_06: Interesting.
[8:15] SPEAKER_06: And now I've come to make you my wife.
[8:18] SPEAKER_06: Your wife?
[8:20] SPEAKER_06: Fascinating.
[8:21] SPEAKER_06: Now, hypothetically speaking, I'm wondering what happens when a man has a certain idea, and maybe the woman wasn't actually fond of that idea.
[8:32] SPEAKER_09: Huh.
[8:33] SPEAKER_09: That is a good question.
[8:40] SPEAKER_06: Well, I'm not sure how to say this, but I'm the woman and us getting married is the idea.
[8:47] SPEAKER_03: I'm not exactly following.
[8:54] SPEAKER_03: You must forgive my niece.
[8:57] SPEAKER_03: That's enough fun and games, Takawita.
[9:01] SPEAKER_03: Remember our little promise.
[9:03] SPEAKER_04: Tonight is the full moon.
[9:05] SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah!
[9:06] SPEAKER_06: No wonder it's so bright! No, no, no, no, no.
[9:11] SPEAKER_06: You you tricked me! You're trying to force my hand!
[9:15] SPEAKER_05: Oh, do not be dramatic, Takawitha!
[9:18] SPEAKER_06: No! My answer is no.
[9:20] SPEAKER_04: You are a disgrace and utter embarrassment! How dare you refuse! Is this what we get for taking you in?
[9:34] SPEAKER_06: I do not wish to hurt you or be ungrateful, but I cannot marry Guinness Gary, for my heart belongs to someone else.
[9:44] SPEAKER_02: Oh okay.
[9:46] SPEAKER_02: I I get it now.
[9:48] SPEAKER_06: Um to the Lord whom I love.
[9:53] SPEAKER_03: Oh.
[9:54] SPEAKER_03: Nope.
[9:55] SPEAKER_03: Did not see that coming.
[9:57] SPEAKER_03: Then you are no longer any daughter of mine.
[10:01] SPEAKER_03: Ow!
[10:03] SPEAKER_04: Ow.
[10:09] SPEAKER_02: That even if you are sick and suffering, even if I seem far away, or if you feel all alone in the world, you will remember that Jesus is with you.
[10:21] SPEAKER_02: Always.
[10:28] SPEAKER_06: Okay, Lord.
[10:29] SPEAKER_06: Okay.
[10:30] SPEAKER_06: I will follow you.
[10:32] SPEAKER_06: Please show me the way.
[10:37] SPEAKER_07: And that is where I will end for today.
[10:40] SPEAKER_08: Wait, I want to know what happens.
[10:42] SPEAKER_07: You will, but you just have to wait.
[10:44] SPEAKER_09: Patience is a virtue, dear chap.
[10:47] SPEAKER_08: What is with the accents today, Brad?
[10:50] SPEAKER_09: Oh, you didn't hear?
[10:51] SPEAKER_09: Mrs.
[10:51] SPEAKER_09: O'Connell is doing Peter Pan for the spring play.
[10:54] SPEAKER_08: But no one has English accents in that play.
[10:56] SPEAKER_09: Yeah?
[10:57] SPEAKER_09: Not until Brad Brumley gets cast as a lead.
[11:03] SPEAKER_08: Alright, you four.
[11:04] SPEAKER_08: Have a good day at school.
[11:06] SPEAKER_08: Praying your ankle feels better, Paul.
[11:08] SPEAKER_08: Thanks, Mrs.
[11:09] SPEAKER_08: Brumley.
[11:10] SPEAKER_07: Bye, Mom.
[11:10] SPEAKER_07: Bye, Mrs.
[11:11] SPEAKER_07: Brumley.
[11:11] SPEAKER_07: Thank you.
[11:12] SPEAKER_07: Fairwell, dear mother.
[11:14] SPEAKER_07: Until we meet again.
[11:18] SPEAKER_09: Oh Brad.
[11:19] SPEAKER_08: Ridiculous Brad.
[11:21] SPEAKER_09: Hey, that's what I was going for.
[11:22] SPEAKER_09: And I got you smile.
[11:25] SPEAKER_08: Yeah, you did.
[11:26] SPEAKER_08: Come on, we'll be late.
[11:32] SPEAKER_01: Thank you so much for listening today.
[11:34] SPEAKER_01: Make sure to tune back in tomorrow to hear the final part of the story of Saint Katiri.
