[0:02] SPEAKER_01: Welcome to Saints Alive, where we take you with us to meet God's most heroic followers.
[0:08] SPEAKER_01: The saints were just ordinary boys and girls who allowed God's love to transform them into real life superheroes.
[0:15] SPEAKER_01: Their love for God changed our world.
[0:18] SPEAKER_01: Did you know that God has sent you here to become a saint?
[0:21] SPEAKER_01: It's up to you to choose love over fear, to be courageous, faithful, and kind.
[0:26] SPEAKER_01: The choice to become a saint won't be easy, but it will be worth it.
[0:30] SPEAKER_01: So listen closely and open your hearts.
[0:33] SPEAKER_01: These real life tales of the saints from the past may just inspire you how to live your story.
[0:39] SPEAKER_01: Let's go on this adventure together.
[1:11] SPEAKER_01: God worked through Margaret Mary, a humble sister, to reveal the depths of his love for us through his sacred heart.
[1:19] SPEAKER_01: Devotion to the sacred heart of Jesus calls us to surrender ourselves to his love and mercy, to trust in him above all else.
[1:29] SPEAKER_01: This can be hard to do in good times, and especially when things get tough.
[1:36] SPEAKER_01: Today, we will meet two sisters who learned how to lean on the sacred heart of Jesus during an especially difficult time, World War II.
[1:47] SPEAKER_01: So, to tell our story, we'll travel back in time to England, 1940.
[2:10] SPEAKER_01: The country stood united, but a shell of what it had once been before the terror of war.
[2:16] SPEAKER_01: Fear lurked around every corner, and despair had crept into even the happiest of homes.
[2:23] SPEAKER_01: But there were some places where hope was kept alive, like a flickering candle, refusing to be extinguished.
[2:34] SPEAKER_01: One such place was the Shaftsbury Convent deep in the English countryside.
[2:39] SPEAKER_01: It was here that children were sent to take shelter from the war.
[3:00] SPEAKER_03: Come along.
[3:02] SPEAKER_03: Don't want to miss the train.
[3:05] SPEAKER_03: But I don't want to leave you alone.
[3:07] SPEAKER_03: No, it'll only be a little while.
[3:11] SPEAKER_03: Just until things settle down again.
[3:15] SPEAKER_05: I still don't understand why we can't stay.
[3:20] SPEAKER_03: There's little I understand these days too, Sarah.
[3:24] SPEAKER_03: But we're not able to understand everything in this world.
[3:28] SPEAKER_03: We're asked to surrender to God's will, even when we can't make sense of things.
[3:36] SPEAKER_03: Plus, Shaft breeds it too far, and I promise to write every day.
[3:45] SPEAKER_03: Now, one last hug.
[3:50] SPEAKER_03: I love you both so much.
[3:54] SPEAKER_03: Be brave.
[3:56] SPEAKER_05: You will.
[4:01] SPEAKER_05: Stay clear of trouble while I'm away.
[4:04] SPEAKER_03: I will.
[4:06] SPEAKER_03: You too.
[4:07] SPEAKER_03: Mind your sister.
[4:09] SPEAKER_03: Goodbye.
[4:16] SPEAKER_01: Hand in hand, the two girls stepped onto the train with the other children.
[4:21] SPEAKER_01: Mothers stood on the platform, holding back tears as they solemnly waved goodbye.
[4:28] SPEAKER_01: The train gathered speed as it left the station, barreling through London and on to the convent in Shaftesbury.
[4:35] SPEAKER_01: On to safety.
[5:05] SPEAKER_01: But within those walls reverberated the prayers of the sisters who refused to let the light of Christ be extinguished.
[5:23] SPEAKER_01: The weeks carried on at the convent, and though Sarah was able to distract herself during the day, she couldn't quiet her mind at night.
[5:32] SPEAKER_01: As soon as the other children had drifted off in the comfort of sleep, she would sneak out of bed and sit on the windowsill, watching the stars and thinking of home.
[5:45] SPEAKER_05: Sarah, well, you're lucky.
[5:52] SPEAKER_05: I just keep having nightmares.
[5:54] SPEAKER_05: What are you looking at?
[5:56] SPEAKER_05: The stars.
[5:58] SPEAKER_05: Look.
[5:59] SPEAKER_05: Just there.
[6:00] SPEAKER_05: Do you see that?
[6:02] SPEAKER_05: I see it.
[6:04] SPEAKER_05: Is it a star?
[6:06] SPEAKER_05: I think it's moving.
[6:09] SPEAKER_05: Oh no! It's the German.
[6:14] SPEAKER_05: They're coming.
[6:22] SPEAKER_02: Quick enough, just like we did, do the crit.
[6:26] SPEAKER_02: Sister Evelyn, go to the chapel and get the support.
[6:30] SPEAKER_02: I will take the children.
[6:32] SPEAKER_02: Yes, ma'am.
[6:53] SPEAKER_02: Mother Claire, the Siborium.
[6:56] SPEAKER_02: Thank you, sister.
[6:58] SPEAKER_02: Please place our Eucharistic Lord in the tabernacle.
[7:20] SPEAKER_02: Now, children, I know you must be all frightened, but now is the chance to practice courage.
[7:28] SPEAKER_02: We will sleep here for the night, and I'm sure we'll all be safe in the morning.
[7:34] SPEAKER_02: I have a blanket for each of you.
[7:36] SPEAKER_15: Try to get some rest.
[7:41] SPEAKER_15: Jane, Sarah, do you still need blankets?
[7:45] SPEAKER_05: No, I I have one.
[7:47] SPEAKER_05: Thank you.
[7:49] SPEAKER_05: Sister Evelyn, I need much more than a blanket.
[7:53] SPEAKER_05: What can I get you?
[7:55] SPEAKER_05: Well, I would really like for this water storm and for all of us to go home.
[8:01] SPEAKER_05: I don't think I'll be able to sleep tonight with these planes flying overhead.
[8:07] SPEAKER_15: I have to admit, I feel the same way, Jane.
[8:10] SPEAKER_15: But perhaps we should pray for Jesus' sacred heart to console us tonight.
[8:16] SPEAKER_15: Come now.
[8:17] SPEAKER_15: In Nomini Patrios it feeling Sister?
[8:21] SPEAKER_15: Yes, Sarah.
[8:22] SPEAKER_05: What do you mean exactly about Jesus' sacred heart?
[8:28] SPEAKER_05: You're always saying that, but to be honest, I don't know what it means.
[8:35] SPEAKER_15: Well, I come to think of it, it's a bit difficult to explain without knowing the backstory.
[8:40] SPEAKER_05: Backstory?
[8:41] SPEAKER_05: Now that's something that's always confused me.
[8:44] SPEAKER_05: Like the back of a storybook, the opposite of the cover?
[8:48] SPEAKER_15: No.
[8:49] SPEAKER_15: The backstory gives context, history.
[8:52] SPEAKER_15: The backstory of the Sacred Heart is the story of an incredible saint that helped the whole world come to know the love of Jesus.
[9:01] SPEAKER_05: So nothing to do with the cover.
[9:05] SPEAKER_05: No, Jane.
[9:08] SPEAKER_05: Well, can we hear it?
[9:12] SPEAKER_05: Mother, what do you think?
[9:15] SPEAKER_02: I think a story is a wonderful idea.
[9:18] SPEAKER_02: They'll fall asleep once their minds and hearts are quitened.
[9:24] SPEAKER_02: My thought exactly.
[9:26] SPEAKER_15: Now, this is the story of a young girl that lived about 300 years ago, not too far from here, in the country of France.
[9:34] SPEAKER_11: And her name was Margaret Left and right and whoa today born moment.
[10:06] SPEAKER_05: Medicine, Papa.
[10:10] SPEAKER_06: Oh no, your foot! Just see desolate.
[10:14] SPEAKER_06: How clumsy of me.
[10:17] SPEAKER_09: It's quite all right, little one.
[10:19] SPEAKER_09: I didn't feel a thing.
[10:22] SPEAKER_14: I don't want to put a stop to the fun, but it's time for bed.
[10:27] SPEAKER_04: Oh, just one more song.
[10:30] SPEAKER_14: No, Pierre, not tonight.
[10:32] SPEAKER_14: Come, I'll tug you in and tell you a story.
[10:35] SPEAKER_04: What if I beg really hard?
[10:39] SPEAKER_14: You can save your begging.
[10:40] SPEAKER_14: The answer will still be no.
[10:43] SPEAKER_14: Come, follow your brothers upstairs.
[10:45] SPEAKER_14: Come on.
[10:49] SPEAKER_06: Papa.
[10:50] SPEAKER_06: We shut him.
[10:53] SPEAKER_11: And I love you.
[10:55] SPEAKER_11: And I'd love seeing the joy in your face tonight.
[10:58] SPEAKER_11: Normally you're so quiet.
[11:00] SPEAKER_11: So pensive.
[11:02] SPEAKER_06: I'm quiet thinking of God.
[11:05] SPEAKER_06: He is always on my heart.
[11:10] SPEAKER_06: Always Papa, are you alright?
[11:15] SPEAKER_10: Yes, yes.
[11:17] SPEAKER_10: Don't you worry about me.
[11:19] SPEAKER_10: Always keep God on your heart and surrender your will to his.
[11:25] SPEAKER_06: Yes, I will, Papa.
[11:28] SPEAKER_06: Bonui.
[11:29] SPEAKER_10: Bonui, macheri.
[11:35] SPEAKER_15: Margaret was the fifth of seven children and lived a happy, carefree childhood.
[11:41] SPEAKER_15: But when she was eight, her father's cough only continued to worsen, and soon he lay in bed, knowing that these were his last hours on earth.
[11:51] SPEAKER_15: The Allocock family huddled around their beloved father and tearfully said their goodbyes.
[11:58] SPEAKER_15: Margaret was the last in line.
[12:00] SPEAKER_15: Leaning in close, she clutched her father's hand and tried to smile.
[12:07] SPEAKER_06: It's me, Margaret.
[12:14] SPEAKER_09: I want you to know I'm here, Papa.
[12:21] SPEAKER_06: I'm here.
[12:23] SPEAKER_10: I want you to never forget my love for you.
[12:31] SPEAKER_10: I'm so sorry I couldn't stay.
[12:35] SPEAKER_10: God willing, I will spend my time in heaven praying for you all.
[12:42] SPEAKER_06: And we will pray for you.
[12:47] SPEAKER_06: Don't worry.
[12:48] SPEAKER_06: We will never forget your love.
[12:53] unknown: Chateau.
[13:05] SPEAKER_15: After the death of her father, Margaret came to know the depths of suffering and grief.
[13:11] SPEAKER_15: But a remarkable thing happened.
[13:14] SPEAKER_15: Through her grief, she clung to Christ all the more.
[13:18] SPEAKER_15: He was her light, her hope, and her foundation of joy.
[13:22] SPEAKER_15: She was sent to a boarding school run by poor Clair nuns, and there she would spend hours sitting in the chapel, gazing at Jesus in the tabernacle, and letting her heart find rest in the beauty surrounding her.
[13:36] SPEAKER_15: Years went by, and on a sunny afternoon in July, she was jumping rope with her friend Jacqueline in the garden when tragedy struck again.
[13:52] SPEAKER_06: Here, let me show you.
[13:54] SPEAKER_06: You have to swing it high above your head, like this.
[13:58] SPEAKER_06: All right, let's see how many you can do in a row.
[14:11] SPEAKER_05: Margaret, Margaret, sister, come.
[14:44] SPEAKER_00: I'm afraid it's rheumatic fever.
[14:49] SPEAKER_00: It was smart to bring her back home.
[14:53] SPEAKER_00: Unfortunately, there is little that can be done.
[14:58] SPEAKER_00: If you're a religious woman, now would be the time to pray.
[15:07] SPEAKER_14: Thank you, Doctor.
[15:47] SPEAKER_15: Each day, Margaret's mother begged God for a miracle by her bedside.
[15:52] SPEAKER_15: And through her agony, Margaret turned to prayer too.
[16:01] SPEAKER_05: Oh holy mother, please bring my prayer to your side.
[16:07] SPEAKER_05: Important live.
[16:10] SPEAKER_05: Please, heal me.
[16:15] SPEAKER_15: Four years passed, and Margaret remained bedridden.
[16:19] SPEAKER_05: Four years, that's that's that's an entire century.
[16:24] SPEAKER_05: A century is a hundred years.
[16:28] SPEAKER_05: Well, four years is more than half my life.
[16:31] SPEAKER_05: So it seems like a century to me.
[16:34] SPEAKER_15: It really is unbelievable to think about.
[16:37] SPEAKER_15: Four years ago, I was just a novice.
[16:41] SPEAKER_15: Well, Margaret continued to pray through those long, difficult years.
[16:46] SPEAKER_15: She often found her mind wandering back to the convent where she had attended boarding school.
[16:51] SPEAKER_15: She would close her eyes and imagine she was in the chapel again.
[16:55] SPEAKER_15: She could almost hear the angelic voices of the sisters singing or the church bells tolling.
[17:00] SPEAKER_15: But she longed for more than just the convent.
[17:03] SPEAKER_15: She longed to give her life to Jesus entirely.
[17:07] SPEAKER_15: She longed to become a sister.
[17:10] SPEAKER_15: One morning, Margaret lay in bed watching the sun creep up over the hillside, and she felt her heart swell with the love of God.
[17:19] SPEAKER_15: She closed her eyes tightly.
[17:22] SPEAKER_05: Oh blessed mother, I long to be completely devoted to your son alone.
[17:31] SPEAKER_05: I promised to consecrate myself to him entirely as a religious sister.
[17:40] SPEAKER_15: In that very moment, when Margaret made her quiet promise, a great gust of wind threw open the windows.
[17:48] SPEAKER_15: Margaret shivered and reached down to pull up the blankets when she suddenly felt a great weight lift from her body.
[17:56] SPEAKER_04: Mama Mama Yes?
[18:12] SPEAKER_14: What is it, my love?
[18:13] SPEAKER_14: I'm right here.
[18:14] SPEAKER_14: Mama, I I don't feel any pain.
[18:18] SPEAKER_14: I I have been healed.
[18:22] SPEAKER_14: I don't understand.
[18:26] SPEAKER_14: Your toes.
[18:29] SPEAKER_07: You're moving your toes.
[18:33] SPEAKER_07: Oh Jesus.
[18:35] SPEAKER_07: Oh thank you.
[18:37] SPEAKER_04: Thank you.
[18:38] unknown: Thank you, Jesus.
[18:40] SPEAKER_04: What is it?
[18:41] SPEAKER_04: What happened?
[18:43] SPEAKER_04: Here, look, I'm all better.
[18:45] SPEAKER_04: I I can move again.
[18:47] SPEAKER_04: You can move?
[18:49] SPEAKER_04: You can move?
[18:50] SPEAKER_04: Thank you, Jesus.
[18:52] SPEAKER_04: Are you ready to dance again?
[18:55] SPEAKER_04: Not quite, but I will be here.
[18:58] SPEAKER_04: I will be.
[19:22] SPEAKER_05: I prayed every night that the bombs would stop, that the war would end, and we could go back home.
[19:30] SPEAKER_05: Why did God answer Margaret's prayer and not mine?
[19:36] SPEAKER_15: I don't know, Sarah, but I know it's not because he isn't listening or that he doesn't love you.
[19:43] SPEAKER_15: Sometimes there are things that we can't understand, that we have to surrender to God's will.
[19:52] SPEAKER_05: That's what Mummy says too.
[19:55] SPEAKER_15: Do you see that tabernacle over there?
[19:58] SPEAKER_15: Jesus loves us so much that he's here present with us, even now.
[20:03] SPEAKER_15: Sometimes God allows hard things, impossible things, to happen.
[20:08] SPEAKER_15: But that doesn't mean he's not with us.
[20:11] SPEAKER_15: That he doesn't love us.
[20:12] SPEAKER_15: He always wants to hear what's on our hearts.
[20:16] SPEAKER_05: I suppose it isn't so much about understanding as it is about surrendering to his will.
[20:24] SPEAKER_05: Exactly.
[20:26] SPEAKER_15: Easier said than done.
[20:28] SPEAKER_15: But know that the Lord truly is with you.
[20:31] SPEAKER_15: Always.
[20:32] SPEAKER_15: Even when you might feel abandoned, scared, or confused, he will never stop loving you with all of his heart.
[20:39] SPEAKER_15: His sacred heart, right?
[20:41] SPEAKER_15: Right.
[20:43] SPEAKER_15: Alright.
[20:44] SPEAKER_15: What happened next?
[20:46] SPEAKER_15: Well, things finally got better for Margaret.
[20:49] SPEAKER_15: She was so grateful to our blessed mother for interceding for her healing that she changed her name to.
[20:58] SPEAKER_15: Yes.
[21:01] SPEAKER_15: The years slipped by, and Margaret Mary became one of the most beautiful young women in the city.
[21:07] SPEAKER_15: Her wavy brown hair fell softly round her shoulders, and her smile seemed to soften even the hardest of hearts.
[21:15] SPEAKER_15: As was the custom, her family wanted her to marry well.
[21:19] SPEAKER_15: She remained faithful to the Lord, but with time, the memory of her promise faded.
[21:25] SPEAKER_15: She became swept up with the dances, parties, and suitors, living the life of a young socialite.
[21:33] SPEAKER_15: But internally, she felt conflicted, as if there was something missing or forgotten.
[21:40] SPEAKER_15: She didn't know it yet, but her heart was longing for more.
[22:00] SPEAKER_13: Margaret, Margaret Mary.
[22:01] SPEAKER_13: Oh, Sophie! There you are!
[22:04] SPEAKER_12: What a beautiful party! There isn't a man in this room that doesn't have his eye on you.
[22:11] SPEAKER_12: Oh, Sophie! That's not true.
[22:15] SPEAKER_12: Of course it is.
[22:16] SPEAKER_12: Just look around.
[22:18] SPEAKER_12: If there is a man with a pulse, he wants to dance with you.
[22:24] SPEAKER_08: Mademoiselle, may I have these dolls?
[22:28] SPEAKER_13: Me?
[22:30] SPEAKER_13: Well, go on.
[22:33] SPEAKER_13: Um yes, yes, you may.
[22:36] SPEAKER_15: Margaret Mary took the young man's hand and timidly walked onto the dance room.
[22:42] SPEAKER_15: She smiled politely as they began to dance.
[22:47] SPEAKER_15: The man's eyes fixed on her own.
[22:51] SPEAKER_15: With each familiar step, she became more lost in the moment, dancing with ease in the arms of her partner, and smiling broadly as she took in the beauty all around her.
[23:02] SPEAKER_08: You're a wonderful dancer.
[23:04] SPEAKER_13: Thank you.
[23:05] SPEAKER_13: So are you.
[23:07] SPEAKER_08: I'm just trying to keep up.
[23:11] SPEAKER_15: The second seemed to stand still as Margaret Mary allowed herself to gaze back into the young man's eyes.
[23:18] SPEAKER_15: And then her feet got in the way, bringing her back to reality.
[23:24] SPEAKER_13: Oh, your foot! I am so sorry.
[23:27] SPEAKER_13: How clumsy of me.
[23:29] SPEAKER_08: No matter.
[23:30] SPEAKER_08: I'm quite alright.
[23:33] SPEAKER_05: Oh no! My foot! Just see it as a leg.
[23:37] SPEAKER_05: How clumsy of me.
[23:39] SPEAKER_09: It's quite all right, little one.
[23:42] SPEAKER_09: I didn't feel a thing.
[23:44] SPEAKER_06: Of a crushia plena.
[23:59] SPEAKER_08: Are you okay?
[24:01] SPEAKER_13: Yes.
[24:02] SPEAKER_13: Yes, I'm sorry.
[24:04] SPEAKER_13: I I have to go.
[24:06] SPEAKER_08: Go.
[24:06] SPEAKER_08: But the night is young.
[24:08] SPEAKER_13: Margaret! Margaret Mary, where are you going?
[24:19] SPEAKER_15: Margaret ran out into the quiet street outside.
[24:23] SPEAKER_15: Panting, she placed her hand on her racing heart, trying to catch her breath.
[24:28] SPEAKER_15: Closing her eyes, she let the memory of her promise wash over her heart.
[24:35] SPEAKER_05: Oh, blessed mother.
[24:38] SPEAKER_05: I long to be completely devoted to your son alone.
[24:44] SPEAKER_05: I promise to consecrate myself to him entirely as a religious sister.
[24:56] SPEAKER_13: How could I have forgotten all this time?
[25:00] SPEAKER_13: I've known.
[25:01] SPEAKER_13: Deep down.
[25:03] SPEAKER_13: I've known.
[25:06] SPEAKER_13: Margaret, what are you doing in the middle of the street?
[25:10] SPEAKER_13: Oh, Sophie, I know.
[25:13] SPEAKER_13: You know that you're in the middle of the street?
[25:17] SPEAKER_13: I know what I've been missing.
[25:19] SPEAKER_13: Sophie, the promise! I remember.
[25:23] SPEAKER_13: Margaret! Margaret Mary!
[25:27] SPEAKER_08: Well, I've never had a day run away that fast.
[25:32] SPEAKER_13: I remember.
[25:34] SPEAKER_13: I remember! I remember.
[25:39] SPEAKER_15: Margaret Mary lifted the layers of her gown and ran on.
[25:43] SPEAKER_15: She ran down the middle of the empty streets of the city beaming with joy.
[25:48] SPEAKER_15: At long last, she remembered the promise she had made, the joy she had forgotten, and the love for the Lord she would never stop running to.
[26:17] SPEAKER_02: I don't think so.
[26:19] SPEAKER_02: Children, I've just received word that we are safe.
[26:25] SPEAKER_02: The coast is clear.
[26:28] SPEAKER_02: Now, gather your blankets and make your way back upstairs.
[26:32] SPEAKER_02: I know it's been a long night for you all, but the sun will rise on a hopeful day soon, and well, we all need our rest.
[26:43] SPEAKER_05: Sister Evelyn?
[26:45] SPEAKER_05: Yes, Jane.
[26:46] SPEAKER_05: Perhaps you could finish the story in the morning.
[26:50] SPEAKER_15: What do you think, Sarah?
[26:52] SPEAKER_05: I would like that very much.
[26:56] SPEAKER_15: So would I.
[26:57] SPEAKER_15: Now, you two hurry up and get some sleep.
[27:00] SPEAKER_15: I'll see you with the sunshine.
[27:12] SPEAKER_01: This is just the start of Margaret Mary's story, and we can't wait for you to hear the rest.
[27:19] SPEAKER_01: In our episode today, Sarah and Jane struggled to understand, but trusted and surrendered to God's will.
[27:26] SPEAKER_01: Has there been a time in your life where you didn't understand something, but leaned on the Lord and trusted in him?
[27:34] SPEAKER_01: Maybe there's something you're struggling to understand right now.
[27:38] SPEAKER_01: No matter what it may be, turn to Jesus and his most sacred heart and surrender to his will and let his love carry you through.
[27:51] SPEAKER_01: What will happen to Margaret Mary next?
[27:53] SPEAKER_01: And what does she have to do with the sacred heart of Jesus?
[27:56] SPEAKER_01: Find out in our new episode next Monday, the 24th, to hear the rest of the story.
[28:36] SPEAKER_14: I'm Melissa.
[28:37] SPEAKER_01: And I'm Tanner.
