## Transcript

[0:28] SPEAKER_00: I tell you what, a week it's just too long to wait.
[0:30] SPEAKER_00: I spend the entire week just wanting to get to Sunday so we can record the podcast, and I am pumped to be here.
[0:36] SPEAKER_00: We've got a big show planned today.
[0:37] SPEAKER_00: We're going to start off by reading your Spotify comments from last week, which was the most Spotify comments we've ever had.
[0:43] SPEAKER_00: And going through them was really tricky.
[0:45] SPEAKER_00: So if your comment got left off, we we're just sorry.
[0:47] SPEAKER_00: There was like 160 comments, and it's hard to get it down to uh like 10 or 12 comments.
[0:52] SPEAKER_00: So we apologize in advance, but we hope we've picked some good ones.
[0:54] SPEAKER_00: Uh then we've got some on the spot questions or some questions without notice to put each other through.
[0:59] SPEAKER_00: And we're going to wrap up the show with a fun new segment.
[1:02] SPEAKER_00: Or maybe it's like more like a game than it is a segment that I'm keeping from the team and keeping a little bit of a secret, been keeping it all week that we're we're going to play, and hopefully that's fun as well.
[1:10] SPEAKER_00: Uh and coming along for the fun today is the most opinionated man in Trithlon and the man who makes this podcast entertaining for all of us, love him or hate him, Greg Harper.
[1:20] SPEAKER_03: Thanks for having me, Jack, and uh happy to be back for another week.
[1:23] SPEAKER_00: And also joining us, as always, is the man of the hour.
[1:27] SPEAKER_00: He's too sweet to be sour.
[1:29] SPEAKER_00: What you see is what you get, and what you don't is even better yet.
[1:32] SPEAKER_00: It's Sam Appledon, the women's pick, the men's regret.
[1:35] SPEAKER_00: If you have to go against him, you made a bad bet.
[1:38] SPEAKER_00: The biggest arms, the biggest charms, and the man who's going to do all the harm.
[1:42] SPEAKER_00: The man who eats T-bone steaks and lifts barbell plates.
[1:44] SPEAKER_00: He's sweeter than a German chocolate cake.
[1:46] SPEAKER_00: Apo, good to see you, mate.
[1:49] SPEAKER_04: Wow, that was a um that was a pick-me-up.
[1:51] SPEAKER_04: I did get up at 5.20 this morning to uh do a four-hour brick session before recording.
[1:57] SPEAKER_04: So, you know, the energy was a little low, but that's that's definitely picked me back up.
[2:01] SPEAKER_04: Thanks for having me, Jack, and thanks for that intro.
[2:04] SPEAKER_00: Just so uh a bit of reference for the for the people listening, Apo, you were flat before the episode.
[2:08] SPEAKER_00: I said, I've got to lift the man during this in intro.
[2:11] SPEAKER_04: So And that that was just off the cuff, wasn't it?
[2:13] SPEAKER_04: That uh that little poem, wasn't it?
[2:15] SPEAKER_04: You didn't have that pre uh pre-prepared or anything.
[2:20] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, some people will know where that's from.
[2:22] SPEAKER_00: If you do, then you're an OG uh chale sunning fan.
[2:24] SPEAKER_00: If you don't, I highly recommend you go and uh watch the original.
[2:28] SPEAKER_00: All right, boys, let's jump into the Spotify comments.
[2:30] SPEAKER_00: I'll start us off today.
[2:32] SPEAKER_00: Vilmos Lucas says, in 40 years' time, Hayden Wilde will be beating teenagers at the finish line of the Noosa Trithlon.
[2:41] SPEAKER_00: And Wiggs says, Who do you think would win in a fight?
[2:43] SPEAKER_00: One gorilla or 100 Hayden Wilds at the T100 finish line last weekend.
[2:48] SPEAKER_00: Thought this was uh a funny comment about the Noosa Trithon finish line because you actually can picture Hayden Wilde being the competitive old guy at the Noosa Trithon finish line.
[2:57] SPEAKER_00: And boys, who do you think would win?
[2:59] SPEAKER_00: The uh 100 Hayden Wilds at last weekend's T100 finish line or one gorilla?
[3:05] SPEAKER_04: I would I would bet one Hayden Wilde would beat up one gorilla, I reckon.
[3:10] SPEAKER_04: Especially with that anger coming out at um Dubai.
[3:13] SPEAKER_04: But uh what's the update on the Noosa Noosa beef, Jack?
[3:17] SPEAKER_04: Do you have any I know a few weeks ago you got a DM from uh someone you know close to the family.
[3:24] SPEAKER_04: Um any update?
[3:25] SPEAKER_00: Close to the family, the family.
[3:28] SPEAKER_04: Uh I didn't know if I should dox him on uh on uh on the podcast.
[3:34] SPEAKER_04: I didn't I didn't know what's uh you know, I don't want the police knocking on my door, mate.
[3:37] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I look, I know that there was uh I know that it got taken to the police, which like we said in the podcast was absolutely ridiculous.
[3:45] SPEAKER_00: Um but uh no updates, don't know, don't know what's happened.
[3:48] SPEAKER_00: Maybe I'll send a message and and and get a get an update for us next week.
[3:51] SPEAKER_00: Because I am actually kind of curious now.
[3:53] SPEAKER_00: We say it.
[3:53] SPEAKER_00: Uh I think one gorilla beats a hundred Hayden Wilds.
[3:56] SPEAKER_00: Not like a hundred percent.
[3:57] SPEAKER_00: Hayden Wilde, he's an angry little man.
[3:59] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, he's an angry little man, but he ain't he ain't a fighter.
[4:02] SPEAKER_00: Hayden Wilde can't fight.
[4:04] SPEAKER_04: All right.
[4:05] SPEAKER_04: Um Callie Miller says, Can we chat about that bloke that ran next to and coached Georgia Taylor Brown in the T100 Dubai?
[4:14] SPEAKER_04: Does T100 have different rules than Iron Man about this?
[4:17] SPEAKER_04: And I was watching this as well, and this was like pretty egregious.
[4:22] SPEAKER_04: I don't know if you guys saw this, but this guy ran next to Georgia, like coaching her along.
[4:26] SPEAKER_04: Um, you know, he was speaking in a thick French accent, so probably one of Vincent Louis's mates, uh friend of the show, Vincent Louis.
[4:32] SPEAKER_04: But I was thinking that was like Iron Man gave Christian Hoganhag a penalty for like um his friend running next to him for like two strides, right?
[4:42] SPEAKER_04: And this guy was this guy must have done at least two to three hundred meters next to George and just like given a time splits and everything, and straight on camera.
[4:52] SPEAKER_04: I I think Jan was saying, mate, get off the screen or you know, stop doing that, but you know, no repercussions.
[4:57] SPEAKER_04: So I don't know what the rules are, but I definitely think there should have been some sort of infraction infringement given.
[5:03] SPEAKER_04: What is the coach even thinking at this point?
[5:05] SPEAKER_03: Like, what what can you really do?
[5:07] SPEAKER_03: Like the athlete's just gonna run the best they can run, like, oh let me run alongside him for 400 meters and and give him all this advice, or like, hey, your arm cadence is this.
[5:17] SPEAKER_03: Like, what can you really even do in that situation?
[5:18] SPEAKER_03: It's like, dude, just cheer on your athlete and move along.
[5:21] SPEAKER_03: Like, you aren't doing anything.
[5:22] SPEAKER_03: I'd be kind of annoyed, honestly, if someone was running next to me for an extended period of time trying to like tell me how to race.
[5:27] SPEAKER_03: It's like, what do you really what can the athlete really gain in a situation like that?
[5:32] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think bike splits are really helpful.
[5:34] SPEAKER_00: Like, if you can have a big whiteboard with splits, I think they're helpful because it's like long and lonely and you don't know where you are and you can gauge your effort a little bit more.
[5:41] SPEAKER_00: But on the run like that, Greg, I'm with you.
[5:42] SPEAKER_00: Like, what what difference can you actually make?
[5:44] SPEAKER_00: And Apple, I thought the funniest part of it was on commentary.
[5:47] SPEAKER_00: Jarn was essentially inciting violence against the guy.
[5:50] SPEAKER_00: He's like, someone needs to go and trip that guy over, and you just know you just know that if you because I've commentated with Jarn, if if if that had been happening, he would have been doing that thing where he like mute you've got a button on on your like box next to your microphone, and he would have been clicking that and it mutes your microphone, and he would have been like, What the fuck?
[6:07] SPEAKER_00: Someone go and like punch this guy, and then he would have gone back to the mic and like said a more tame version of it, knowing Jan.
[6:13] SPEAKER_03: Jan's commentary, like he just he really doesn't leave anything unsaid, and that's why we love him.
[6:19] SPEAKER_03: Alright.
[6:20] SPEAKER_03: Paul Thornton says, People have short memories.
[6:22] SPEAKER_03: It was only last week Iron Man cut away from the last one kilometer of a sprint finish to watch Mountains and a hotel.
[6:30] SPEAKER_03: Not to mention the advert interactions and absolutely jank commentary, such as, This is what we like to see when Taylor is suffering in the heat episode at Kona.
[6:40] SPEAKER_03: Short, short memories.
[6:42] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I mean I it it's true.
[6:45] SPEAKER_03: We have short memories, but I don't think anyone was really taking away from you know, saying, oh, T100's worse than Iron Man, even though Iron Man had had this big blunder as well.
[6:56] SPEAKER_03: You know, it's just it's just another thing that people were jumping on to say this is why Triathon can't get viewers, because here's another organization that has seemingly faltered again.
[7:05] SPEAKER_03: So yeah, we have short memories, but I don't think anyone forgets what Iron Man commentary and what the the broadcast did and their 70.3 worlds finish with the for the men.
[7:14] SPEAKER_00: I didn't watch the 70.3 worlds coverage live, so I couldn't go hard on it.
[7:18] SPEAKER_00: All I can say is I was at the finish line uh watching it live and it was incredible.
[7:22] SPEAKER_00: So that's what I commented on.
[7:23] SPEAKER_00: And you know what?
[7:24] SPEAKER_00: Finella Langridge's comment about Taylor Nibbs suffering her heat episode and like potentially, you know, on the precipice of death out there on the Queen K.
[7:33] SPEAKER_00: Like that comment that does kind of feel wrong, but she's not probably completely wrong.
[7:40] SPEAKER_00: Like, there is probably some people or a lot of people out there who do watch Iron Man or get inspired by um Iron Man by how crazy it is.
[7:48] SPEAKER_00: So she said it horribly and it was poor timing.
[7:50] SPEAKER_00: But her sentiment might not be wrong.
[7:52] SPEAKER_00: Like people do like the extreme side of Iron Man and how hard it is and the brutality of it.
[7:57] SPEAKER_00: And if you go back to the 90s, people collapsing at the finish line was like what took it to the next level.
[8:01] SPEAKER_00: It really did start to capture um uh you know the the non-Trithlon fan, and people were like, Oh, what is this thing where people are crawling across the finish line?
[8:10] SPEAKER_00: So I do agree the finella comment was was worded poorly, but her sentiment might not be as off as as maybe the the core Trithorn fan thinks.
[8:19] SPEAKER_04: And I think we were critical of Iron Man at the time, and just because you know, like two wrongs don't make a right.
[8:25] SPEAKER_04: Like we can be critical of both parties.
[8:27] SPEAKER_04: I think we were critical of Iron Man when they had that um sprint finish debacle, and we're critical of the T-100.
[8:34] SPEAKER_04: I think we're pretty even in our criticism across the board, except maybe to Hayden Wilde.
[8:39] SPEAKER_00: Especially when it's Greg.
[8:41] SPEAKER_03: Apple wants to fight him, so whatever.
[8:45] SPEAKER_00: Oh, a lot of talk about violence early in this podcast.
[8:48] SPEAKER_00: Jesus, what are we?
[8:49] SPEAKER_00: Um Carolyn says people need to lay off T100 for a lap counting mistake.
[8:53] SPEAKER_00: People have literally died at Iron Man races in motorcycle accidents and swims that should have been cancelled.
[8:59] SPEAKER_00: Well, yes, you're kind of correct, Carolyn, in that the lap counting mistake is very small compared to the deaths that have happened at Iron Man races, particularly that um that one at Iron Man Hamburg where the motorcycle hit the cyclist and and there was a death in that in that incident.
[9:15] SPEAKER_00: That was bad.
[9:16] SPEAKER_00: And uh I was doing the podcast by myself at that stage, and I was like, this is so bad that I literally went on and recorded a podcast that on on reflection I wouldn't do anymore.
[9:26] SPEAKER_00: It was so stupid because it was so full of emotion.
[9:28] SPEAKER_00: I was just like, fuck Iron Man, like Iron Man are the fucking worst.
[9:31] SPEAKER_00: I hate Iron Man.
[9:32] SPEAKER_00: Like I went off.
[9:33] SPEAKER_00: It was just it just I it felt so wrong to me that that happened.
[9:36] SPEAKER_00: So um, yeah, I mean, we do cover that kind of stuff when it happens.
[9:40] SPEAKER_00: And if that happened tomorrow at a race, us us three and Vicky would get on and talk about it the same way we do about any T100 incident.
[9:46] SPEAKER_00: Um, yeah, they're they're all shit.
[9:48] SPEAKER_00: People dying in Iron Man races is shit, you know.
[9:51] SPEAKER_00: That that sucks.
[9:52] SPEAKER_00: Um I don't know how we fix that, but we do have a problem in the swim where too many age groupers are dying.
[9:56] SPEAKER_00: Uh I do I do think that should stop being swept under the carpet.
[10:00] SPEAKER_00: And the the mistakes that do buy T100 were an absolute dumpster fire.
[10:03] SPEAKER_00: So yeah, we just we're just trying to talk about what's happened in the sport.
[10:06] SPEAKER_03: Now, if we talk about swims for a second, are these mostly these are more like heart attack related deaths that have happened in swims?
[10:14] SPEAKER_03: And it just happened in Australia, didn't it?
[10:17] SPEAKER_03: Um but is it really like the conditions out there?
[10:20] SPEAKER_03: I mean, is that is that playing a role, or it seems like uh maybe that's not like the biggest factor in this in this.
[10:25] SPEAKER_04: I think there's a competency.
[10:28] SPEAKER_04: Um like I feel like there might need to be some sort of vetting process that might need to be put into play.
[10:34] SPEAKER_04: Like, yes, some swims are rough, but I feel like, yeah, if you can't handle an open water swim, I think there I I don't know what I'm trying to say, but there might be need there needs to be some sort of vetting process, I think, that can ensure athletes can complete an open water swim of 3.8k or 1500 meters, whatever the distance, I think yeah, I think there needs to be some sort of process that ensures that athletes can swim that safely.
[11:03] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and it's it seems so big and hard that it's almost like, well, I don't know, what do we do?
[11:07] SPEAKER_00: Because people have medical episodes, whatever that medical episode is out in the water, whether they panic and drown, whether they have a heart attack, whether they have a stroke, whatever the thing is, people it happens.
[11:17] SPEAKER_00: And maybe sometimes it's because of the water conditions, maybe it's sometimes because of how many people are around them and panicking in that situation, maybe sometimes it's just a medical event that was always going to happen.
[11:27] SPEAKER_00: Maybe we need to get some vetting processes in place, like you said, Apo, to try and guarantee fitness and um competency to complete the the swim and the race as a whole, like a medical check or proof that you've done an Olympic distance race or something like that.
[11:40] SPEAKER_00: But I still don't think it completely um governs heart attacks out of the swim, for example.
[11:45] SPEAKER_00: So tricky situation.
[11:46] SPEAKER_00: I feel like the lap county thing's way easier to fix.
[11:49] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
[11:50] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, I'm gonna shift gears with uh with this one.
[11:53] SPEAKER_04: Um so Lewis Sendra says Aren't we gonna comment on how Ari Clare rocked the TTH Pretender Tri-suit in Iron Man, Arizona and having an amazing performance for an age grouper like him?
[12:05] SPEAKER_04: Good job, Ari.
[12:07] SPEAKER_04: I hope you enjoyed it as part of your severance package from the TTH podcast.
[12:13] SPEAKER_04: And you know, I just picked that one because it was funny.
[12:16] SPEAKER_04: I've got nothing really to add to that, but um yeah, Ari he was looking good for a minute there on the run, but um you know that marathon, she bites.
[12:25] SPEAKER_00: Apo, he had explosive diarrhea on the marathon.
[12:28] SPEAKER_00: He went to the toilet 12 times during the marathon, and uh he was he was describing what was coming out of his body to me.
[12:35] SPEAKER_00: Oh, didn't sound fun.
[12:36] SPEAKER_03: That's a nice severance though.
[12:38] SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, that was that top of the line hoop suit.
[12:41] SPEAKER_03: So uh yeah, good job, Ari.
[12:42] SPEAKER_03: Magna Meyer Lena says, if the T100 disappears That's definitely not her name.
[12:50] SPEAKER_00: That is not her name.
[12:52] SPEAKER_03: Uh I'm gonna start over.
[12:54] SPEAKER_00: We're not editing this out, Greg.
[12:57] SPEAKER_03: Uh Magna Meyer Lena says, that's I thought it was pretty good the first time.
[13:01] SPEAKER_03: Uh if the T100 disappears, what do you guys expect to happen with the sport?
[13:06] SPEAKER_03: And I thought this was an interesting thing to just discuss quickly because people were calling, oh, just give the sport back to Iron Man, whatever.
[13:14] SPEAKER_03: And I thought those were terrible takes after what happened in Dubai.
[13:17] SPEAKER_03: We don't want the T100 to disappear.
[13:19] SPEAKER_03: And you know, Iron Man could even roll back some of the you know pro series, they could go less money.
[13:24] SPEAKER_03: You know, if competition dwindles, then the monopoly gets more power, right?
[13:29] SPEAKER_03: So um hopefully it doesn't disappear and we don't have to really discuss that.
[13:33] SPEAKER_03: But uh I don't I don't expect anything good would would come of that.
[13:36] SPEAKER_00: Okay, we've got a few different ones here of the same theme.
[13:39] SPEAKER_00: So Matthew O'Neill says, serious question should Sam Renouf step down a sea of the PTO?
[13:46] SPEAKER_00: It's undeniably been a rough year for the PTO.
[13:49] SPEAKER_00: Do you think a new leader at the top could give the PTO an opportunity to regain the trust of the athletes and fans?
[13:55] SPEAKER_00: Or do you think this would risk a death spiral for the company?
[13:59] SPEAKER_00: And Hue says, I don't know if this is really how they are or how they strategically present themselves, but Scott DeRue seems much more likable than Sam Renoof.
[14:09] SPEAKER_00: Even in interviews, it sounds like Scott genuinely cares about the people and participants, whereas Sam says a lot of nothing.
[14:15] SPEAKER_00: He talks in a lot of circles and with a lot of buzzwords, but with no real substance.
[14:19] SPEAKER_00: Just my thoughts on the two CEOs.
[14:22] SPEAKER_00: And Red Shelby says, agreed, Sam Renoof needs to be at the T100 grand final with a massive ball and lap counter to counter his repeated PR failures.
[14:32] SPEAKER_00: So there's a lot to unpack here.
[14:34] SPEAKER_00: Firstly, I wanted to just bring to the table credit where credit's due.
[14:38] SPEAKER_00: Literally, like an hour before recording this podcast, Sam Renoof came out on Instagram, not on a story, not on a written statement.
[14:45] SPEAKER_00: He posted on the T100 Instagram account a video of him wrapping up the T100 Dubai shitstorm and like owning some mistakes from it, talking about what happened.
[14:56] SPEAKER_00: What did you two boys make of that video from Sam Renouf?
[14:59] SPEAKER_00: Because we've been calling for him to do that for two years now.
[15:02] SPEAKER_04: I think it was pretty good.
[15:03] SPEAKER_04: I mean, he came on board, came out and said that he takes full responsibility.
[15:08] SPEAKER_04: To the question of the Scott DeRue versus Sam Renouf kind of question that He posed, I think that's it's kind of different circumstances, right?
[15:17] SPEAKER_04: Like the PTO and Sam Renouf are trying to get a new company off the ground.
[15:21] SPEAKER_04: They're a startup.
[15:22] SPEAKER_04: Scott DeRue came into an already fairly established, well-oiled machine with Iron Man, so it's kind of hard to compare the two in my eyes.
[15:30] SPEAKER_04: Um, I don't I like Sam and I like Scott, so you know, I've got no no beef with Sam or Scott, so I just think they're different, you know, in different positions at the moment.
[15:43] SPEAKER_03: And credit where credit's due, just like Jack said, that's awesome.
[15:47] SPEAKER_03: Like Sam's showing that he can put a face to the camera, he can own up to his mistakes, he can he can assure people that he's still a part of this organization, he wants to do better.
[15:57] SPEAKER_03: So I thought that was awesome.
[15:59] SPEAKER_03: Now, someone's we talked about this last week, but if Sam Renof counted the laps at the grand final, that would be the fucking most awesome thing that could happen.
[16:08] SPEAKER_03: Like if he actually stood there with a lap counter going one, two, like that would put a cherry, like that would just put the bow on the whole season.
[16:15] SPEAKER_03: Like, all right, this guy's funny, he listens to people, it's funny, but also practical.
[16:19] SPEAKER_03: Like, they obviously need a lap counter out there.
[16:21] SPEAKER_03: We want them to be better at that.
[16:23] SPEAKER_03: So I think that would actually be an incredible opportunity uh for him to yeah, just just show that he is a human.
[16:30] SPEAKER_03: We want a human interaction with this man, this myth, the legend, CEO Sam, just so we can have faith in his company and and what he's gonna provide for the professionals and age groupers in 2026.
[16:41] SPEAKER_00: The irony of these questions is that I am personal friends with Sam Ranouf and I have zero relationship with Scott Duro.
[16:48] SPEAKER_00: Never talked to him, know nothing about him.
[16:50] SPEAKER_00: Stood next to him at Ma Bay, literally like a meter next to him, but didn't talk to him.
[16:54] SPEAKER_00: Um, and the the previous CEO, Andrew Mesik, and me, like would we notoriously got in fights all the time publicly.
[17:01] SPEAKER_00: Um, and so it's hard for me to talk about Sam Renoof.
[17:04] SPEAKER_00: Like, for example, and I I don't know, Sam will probably hate me saying this.
[17:07] SPEAKER_00: So, Sam, if you're listening, apologies for this.
[17:09] SPEAKER_00: Um, but Sam messaged me after Dubai and and felt like some of my commentary was unfair.
[17:14] SPEAKER_00: And I felt bad.
[17:15] SPEAKER_00: Like, I'm sitting there in a position, like, well, what the fuck do I do?
[17:17] SPEAKER_00: Like, I've got to give my opinion, but like I've got this personal relationship with Sam where we genuinely like each other, you know, like we we have spent a lot of time together, we talk regularly, like we we text regularly.
[17:27] SPEAKER_00: We were literally just a few weeks ago talking about doing the London marathon together.
[17:30] SPEAKER_00: So um, if there's any narrative that you think I hate the T100 or hate Sam Renouf and have a vendetta against him and want him fired, it's absolutely not true.
[17:38] SPEAKER_00: It couldn't be further from the truth, but I do want him to step up because I know Sam as a person, and what he presents publicly is the worst version of him, in my opinion.
[17:48] SPEAKER_00: When you talk to him face to face and get to know him, he's actually a legend.
[17:52] SPEAKER_00: He really is a good person and he's very engaging and friendly and likable, but he doesn't come across like that publicly.
[18:00] SPEAKER_00: And this Instagram video is what we've been calling for him to do forever because I want people to see the real Sam Renof.
[18:06] SPEAKER_00: And you can turn things around like this very, very quickly.
[18:09] SPEAKER_00: And this Instagram video from Sam is the first step in turning things around.
[18:14] SPEAKER_00: Now he just needs to not do it only when there's like a disaster on a race course, he needs to do it more frequently.
[18:19] SPEAKER_00: So the season's about to end.
[18:21] SPEAKER_00: He needs to come out after the grand final and do a wrap-up of the season.
[18:25] SPEAKER_00: Hey everyone, here's the things we did poorly, here's the things we do we did well, here's what we're gonna do in 2026.
[18:31] SPEAKER_00: And then when they release the schedule, he needs to come out and do it in video.
[18:34] SPEAKER_00: Hey, got an announcement.
[18:36] SPEAKER_00: This is the this is the races that we're doing next year.
[18:38] SPEAKER_00: Make himself more visible, make himself more relatable, make himself more likable.
[18:43] SPEAKER_00: He can turn this around super quick.
[18:45] SPEAKER_00: So I don't think Sam Renof should step down.
[18:47] SPEAKER_00: I think give him another chance in 2026, but we need to see the real him.
[18:52] SPEAKER_00: Um, I do think he genuinely cares.
[18:53] SPEAKER_00: I do think he wants to make the sport better.
[18:55] SPEAKER_00: Uh, he just hasn't really had the confidence to step out and show the people who he is.
[19:00] SPEAKER_00: So I thought this Instagram video, which if you haven't seen, head across to the PTO's Instagram and check it out.
[19:04] SPEAKER_00: I thought it was a great first step.
[19:06] SPEAKER_04: MT Pessavento comes he's coming out swinging in this comment.
[19:12] SPEAKER_04: All right, he says Jack is a hundred percent right and Vicky is wrong.
[19:16] SPEAKER_04: People don't like the T100 because it's an elitist club.
[19:19] SPEAKER_04: I hate the line that the PTO has helped the sport because it created the Pro Series.
[19:25] SPEAKER_04: That's a pathetic claim to fame.
[19:27] SPEAKER_04: PTO has lined the pockets of about ten athletes and doesn't give a shit about others.
[19:32] SPEAKER_04: I hate that the wildcards are given to spouses of athletes they like, regardless of how poorly they do in the past races.
[19:39] SPEAKER_04: It's an insider club that no one actually believes is helping athletes besides the very top.
[19:46] SPEAKER_04: Wow.
[19:46] SPEAKER_04: And I mean, I don't necessarily agree with all of that.
[19:52] SPEAKER_04: Um I don't even know where to start.
[19:54] SPEAKER_04: That's a lot of shade, and yeah, I don't agree with most of it to be honest.
[19:58] SPEAKER_04: I think the PTO has helped the sport.
[20:00] SPEAKER_04: And yeah, we say it a lot that the pro series wouldn't exist um without the PTO, and but it's true, right?
[20:07] SPEAKER_04: Like I that is an answer to the PTO's um T100 tour and their and the comment about lining the pockets of 10 athletes, I think the PTO did really good at the beginning where they had the um yearly bonus payout.
[20:21] SPEAKER_04: They were paying like everyone in the top 50, um, and then even through COVID, like they paid out a bunch of people.
[20:28] SPEAKER_04: So I don't agree with the lined the pockets of 10 athletes.
[20:32] SPEAKER_04: Yes, those at the very top are getting more than you know those ranked you know 40th to 50th, but it's a professional sport.
[20:40] SPEAKER_04: If you want to earn more, you've got to be at the top.
[20:42] SPEAKER_04: So that's kind of my opinion.
[20:44] SPEAKER_03: I like the idea of this entire comment because okay, it helped create the pro series.
[20:49] SPEAKER_03: Okay, great.
[20:50] SPEAKER_03: Now what are you gonna do?
[20:51] SPEAKER_03: Right?
[20:52] SPEAKER_03: It's like fine, we can't keep falling back to that.
[20:55] SPEAKER_03: It's like, yes, it's great, but keep going forward.
[20:58] SPEAKER_03: Like that it it's too it's too far in the past.
[21:01] SPEAKER_03: And also, it has just lined the pockets of 10 people.
[21:03] SPEAKER_03: I mean, it's true.
[21:04] SPEAKER_03: Like, you know, if you show up to a wild card and you get 16th place or whatever, now I want to know who's who's getting the shade with the spouses?
[21:13] SPEAKER_03: Is that uh is that a Josh Amberger?
[21:16] SPEAKER_03: Like who's who's getting the shade on that?
[21:17] SPEAKER_03: Because I can't really think of anyone else.
[21:19] SPEAKER_00: That was gonna be one of my first questions from this comment, Greg.
[21:22] SPEAKER_00: Who is he talking about?
[21:23] SPEAKER_00: So I was gonna say he's definitely talking about Josh Amberger as one.
[21:26] SPEAKER_00: Do you guys have any other names?
[21:28] SPEAKER_00: Is he also maybe talking about Eric Lagerstrom, who like, yes, in a different life has been a very, very good middle distance triathlet and good triathlete all round, but but maybe isn't up to T 100 standard at the moment.
[21:39] SPEAKER_00: They're the two I could think of, because obviously the the the T100 love Paula Finlay and Ashley Gentle, but is there anyone else?
[21:44] SPEAKER_04: Has Eric done a T100 recently?
[21:47] SPEAKER_03: No, not recently, but he has.
[21:49] SPEAKER_03: Like maybe in the last maybe like last year he had one, or maybe it was two years ago.
[21:54] SPEAKER_04: So I think there's there's a little bit of nuance to that.
[21:57] SPEAKER_04: I think the PTO, we've seen that athletically.
[22:00] SPEAKER_04: Athletes pulling out race week, like a lot of the times the fields aren't full, right?
[22:04] SPEAKER_04: They're not even filling 20 men, 20 women.
[22:06] SPEAKER_04: And I think if somebody like Josh is on site as a support personnel for Ash and he's got all his gear, it's like, why not?
[22:14] SPEAKER_04: Like it's either 19 athletes race or give Josh a start.
[22:19] SPEAKER_04: Like, I don't necessarily disagree with that.
[22:22] SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah, I can't really think of anybody else though.
[22:25] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and Eric only I think he I was just trying to think, I think he's only done the Canadian Open in like 2022, but I was just trying to think who MT Pesavento might have been talking about.
[22:34] SPEAKER_00: I don't agree.
[22:35] SPEAKER_00: I think I don't think Eric's really been given anything.
[22:37] SPEAKER_00: I was just trying to think who we might be talking about, but I I genuinely now I think about it, he's just talking about Josh Amberger, isn't he?
[22:43] SPEAKER_00: He's just fully throwing Josh Amberger under the bus and not saying his name.
[22:48] SPEAKER_00: Um I like that we're getting strong opinions on the Spotify comments though.
[22:51] SPEAKER_00: Like if you want to stand out, either say something really funny or give a strong opinion.
[22:55] SPEAKER_00: That is the best way to go about it.
[22:57] SPEAKER_00: And I think there's like elements of truth to everything he's saying, but I don't think any of it is completely true.
[23:03] SPEAKER_00: Like maybe it is a little elitist, but isn't all pro sport at the top level elitist?
[23:07] SPEAKER_00: Like F1 is definitely elitist, you know.
[23:10] SPEAKER_00: The the top tennis players definitely make more than the 500th ranked tennis player in the world.
[23:14] SPEAKER_00: And the the the whole, you know, that is a very, very interesting take that the PTO need to be more than just what they've made Iron Man do.
[23:25] SPEAKER_00: Because you're right, Greg.
[23:26] SPEAKER_00: You don't want to just be known for how you've made someone else better.
[23:30] SPEAKER_00: You want to make yourself better.
[23:32] SPEAKER_00: It's kind of like if you have a girlfriend and you have like a relationship that lasts three years and you know it's rocky, it's up and down, and she learns all these lessons from your relationship, breaks up with you, and then goes and implements them in the next relationship.
[23:45] SPEAKER_00: Like, yeah, sure, you might have helped her find her soulmate, but she's not your soulmate.
[23:50] SPEAKER_00: She she she's not sticking around in your life.
[23:52] SPEAKER_00: So, like the the PTO, they have helped the sport, they have helped Iron Man.
[23:57] SPEAKER_00: Now, when are they gonna go and find their soulmate?
[24:01] SPEAKER_04: Perfect analogy.
[24:03] SPEAKER_03: I love it.
[24:03] SPEAKER_03: All right.
[24:04] SPEAKER_03: Uh Nikki Rickerby says, I'm racing Iron Man Busso this year and was wondering if I spot Apo out there looking like he's flirting with an existential crisis courtesy of Nick Thomas.
[24:18] SPEAKER_03: Greg Greg.
[24:19] SPEAKER_03: Greg.
[24:21] SPEAKER_03: Greg.
[24:22] SPEAKER_03: What?
[24:23] SPEAKER_03: I got it right the second time.
[24:25] SPEAKER_03: All right.
[24:26] SPEAKER_04: Let me say existential.
[24:28] SPEAKER_04: We're leaving that in.
[24:29] SPEAKER_00: Do not say we're not in this either, Greg.
[24:32] SPEAKER_03: I said I said existential.
[24:34] SPEAKER_03: Existential.
[24:35] SPEAKER_03: All right.
[24:38] SPEAKER_03: Nikki Nikki Rickerby says I'm racing Busso this year and was wondering if I spot Apo out there looking like he's flirting with an as extend as existential.
[24:54] SPEAKER_01: Oh my damn.
[24:57] SPEAKER_03: Looking like he's flirting with an Sistent Existence.
[25:00] SPEAKER_03: I can't say it.
[25:01] SPEAKER_03: I can't say it.
[25:07] SPEAKER_04: Existential.
[25:09] SPEAKER_04: It's like when you're like questioning your existence.
[25:12] SPEAKER_03: Existential crisis.
[25:16] SPEAKER_03: Existential crisis.
[25:17] SPEAKER_03: Courtesy of Nick Thompson.
[25:20] SPEAKER_03: Are there any specific words of encouragement you'd like me to deliver?
[25:24] SPEAKER_03: Uplifting, gently threatening, or tastefully unhinged?
[25:29] SPEAKER_03: I think Afo would appreciate um something gently threatening.
[25:35] SPEAKER_03: He's kind of one of those guys who's like he's gentle, but he likes that little bit of flair, that spice, because it it gives him a taste of like, ooh, maybe I could be like that.
[25:44] SPEAKER_03: But he's he's kind of a very gentle guy.
[25:46] SPEAKER_03: So give him something, call him a pretender, and uh yeah, get him rolling again, because he's definitely gonna be having a crisis out there.
[25:52] SPEAKER_04: Oh yeah.
[25:53] SPEAKER_04: I mean it's Iron Man.
[25:54] SPEAKER_00: I think tastefully unhinged, Greg.
[25:57] SPEAKER_00: I think that Apo, he listens to death metal, like you know, Apo comes across like this nice guy, innocent guy, but he's not.
[26:03] SPEAKER_00: He likes dark humor.
[26:05] SPEAKER_00: So I think I think rip a little bit of dark humour Apo's way mid-marathon.
[26:09] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, not uplifting.
[26:10] SPEAKER_04: I don't need that.
[26:11] SPEAKER_04: You're doing great, keep it up.
[26:12] SPEAKER_03: Like they're dying up there, man.
[26:14] SPEAKER_03: You're you're catching them.
[26:15] SPEAKER_03: It's like fuck you, dude.
[26:17] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and then you see Nick at the U-turn and he's fucking looking awesome.
[26:20] SPEAKER_04: He looks like Superman.
[26:22] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, definitely tastefully unhinged or threatening.
[26:26] SPEAKER_04: Something that's gonna make me sl make me laugh.
[26:28] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, okay.
[26:29] SPEAKER_00: What about this approach?
[26:30] SPEAKER_00: Because Nikki likely will see you out on course.
[26:32] SPEAKER_00: Give her like a give her something to to shout out to you.
[26:34] SPEAKER_00: It doesn't have to be specific, but give her like a topic or you know, give her some direction here.
[26:39] SPEAKER_04: I don't know, maybe like an inside joke, like a TTH inside joke, something about a glove or something.
[26:45] SPEAKER_04: That'd be funny.
[26:46] SPEAKER_04: That'd make me laugh.
[26:47] SPEAKER_00: There you go, Nikki.
[26:48] SPEAKER_00: Okay, Adam Dryberg, he made he commented, and there's been comments about this before as well, Greg, and I was thinking about this on my run.
[26:54] SPEAKER_00: And it's basically asking you, why do you hate Hayden so much, but love Alistair Brownley so much when they are quite notorious for the same things?
[27:03] SPEAKER_00: Like Alistair Brownley has notoriously ended careers from how how hard he sprayed athletes out on course, but then when Hayden does it, maybe you're not the biggest fan.
[27:12] SPEAKER_00: So Adam just wants answers.
[27:13] SPEAKER_03: The answer is simple.
[27:15] SPEAKER_03: Hayden goes out there and disrespects officials.
[27:18] SPEAKER_03: Alistair doesn't.
[27:19] SPEAKER_03: I you can say whatever you want to the athletes.
[27:21] SPEAKER_03: Hayden running by the guys during the race, I thought that was kind of funny.
[27:24] SPEAKER_03: But I don't appro like you never disrespect the people who are working for the organization if they're a volunteer or whatnot, and I've seen it, and that's what I don't like.
[27:33] SPEAKER_04: I've been on the receiving end of an Alistair Brownle spray once or twice.
[27:36] SPEAKER_03: What was the best one?
[27:37] SPEAKER_03: I would love to tell me all about it.
[27:41] SPEAKER_04: I can't remember.
[27:42] SPEAKER_04: I think because I ra I did a year of racing with the French Grand Prix, and um I think I made like that swim group that was you know notorious, and I made it one time and I was like struggling, and I think I pulled to the front or something, and I like probably dropped the average speed by like 10 kilometres an hour, and he came past and yelled at me.
[28:03] SPEAKER_04: I was like, sorry.
[28:05] SPEAKER_00: There was a funny story an athlete told me last year, Apo, that they were racing Madrid, the the ITU race in Madrid.
[28:12] SPEAKER_00: And I don't know why, I I don't know why I found this so funny, but it was in the days where like the the TT bars were just coming into ITU, like they just had the clip-on ones that you could use on your road bike, and um they this person was in a breakaway, so you can go and look at the Madrid breakaways and probably figure out who it is.
[28:28] SPEAKER_00: But this person was in a breakaway in Madrid with Alistair Brownlee, and they were climbing up the hill, and this person was at the front, and Alistair and Johnny Brownley came around him, and this person was in the little clip-on TT bars, and Alistair Brownley yells out to him, get off your fucking little bitch T T bars.
[28:43] SPEAKER_00: And for some reason, that just I just cracked up when I was hearing this story.
[28:49] SPEAKER_04: Like it just what year was that?
[28:51] SPEAKER_04: Surely that's in the archives.
[28:52] SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go back and watch that.
[28:54] SPEAKER_00: I'm not saying get off your little bitch T T bars.
[28:59] SPEAKER_04: It must be someone that you know.
[29:00] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, Alistair had TT bars too.
[29:02] SPEAKER_00: That's the funny thing.
[29:03] SPEAKER_00: He had the clip on it.
[29:04] SPEAKER_04: It's gotta be Aaron Royal, dude.
[29:07] SPEAKER_00: No comment.
[29:08] SPEAKER_04: Alright.
[29:09] SPEAKER_04: James Sutherland comes in with a pretty fun one, I thought.
[29:12] SPEAKER_04: 70.3 Reelay, who wins?
[29:15] SPEAKER_04: Greg Harper on the swim, Apo on the bike, Jack on the run, versus Justin Rialli, Ari Clau, and Tempo Skipper.
[29:23] SPEAKER_04: And I mean, it's pretty clearly gonna be the former, right?
[29:28] SPEAKER_04: Like how much time would you put into Justin in a swim, Greg?
[29:31] SPEAKER_03: Is it just like uh two people in the race situation?
[29:35] SPEAKER_04: I'd say over a minute.
[29:36] SPEAKER_04: And you don't need to like think about the bike or the run.
[29:39] SPEAKER_04: You could just go full.
[29:40] SPEAKER_04: You you you could just go like the clappers and just go for it.
[29:43] SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
[29:44] SPEAKER_03: No, I'd reckon we take this for sure.
[29:46] SPEAKER_03: It but it would be like decently uh close.
[29:49] SPEAKER_03: I feel like they would just hover behind us for most of the race and never quite uh get to the front.
[29:53] SPEAKER_00: Who rides faster out of you and Ari Apple?
[29:56] SPEAKER_04: Ari can ride well sometimes, but I think I mean the odds are tip in my favour, surely.
[30:02] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, and I'm taking Joe Skip every day of the week, so that's three from three.
[30:05] SPEAKER_00: We definitely win.
[30:07] SPEAKER_04: I reckon it would be at least four minutes at the finish line to us.
[30:13] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, we'd be waiting long enough that we'd all be like we'd be through that phase where you finish a race and you're fucked, and we'd be on to that that phase where you're like starting to feel good and chatting and just having fun.
[30:24] SPEAKER_00: We've already probably already had two or three glasses of coke and and water.
[30:28] SPEAKER_00: Probably we're also probably all holding a slice of watermelon at that stage.
[30:31] SPEAKER_00: Like we've we've done a bit.
[30:32] SPEAKER_00: We've done a bit.
[30:33] SPEAKER_04: Getting ready for the athletic brewing uh podium celebration.
[30:39] SPEAKER_03: Uh, how do you say this next name, guys?
[30:41] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I'm glad that's you and not me.
[30:45] SPEAKER_03: I reckon it's seed led.
[30:48] SPEAKER_03: All right.
[30:49] SPEAKER_03: Seed Ledglik says 26th at Marbella to third at Iron Man Arizona is not impressive.
[30:57] SPEAKER_03: Got dominated where it matters.
[30:59] SPEAKER_03: Mennow destroyed Iron Man Arizona.
[31:02] SPEAKER_03: Nobody else was close to contention.
[31:05] SPEAKER_03: Now, I believe he's referring to us praising Ben Canute for backing up, you know.
[31:10] SPEAKER_03: I mean, backing up.
[31:11] SPEAKER_03: He didn't do well in Marbella by his standards, and then got third in Iron Man, Arizona.
[31:15] SPEAKER_03: But I just gotta come out here and say, defend Ben, and I gotta say, it's much more impressive than your uh 1140 Iron Man Niece result said.
[31:24] SPEAKER_03: So uh maybe uh get faster, buddy.
[31:27] SPEAKER_03: Wow Greg, did you actually look at it?
[31:29] SPEAKER_00: Greg has come with receipts.
[31:31] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I fucking looked it up, dude.
[31:32] SPEAKER_03: Don't hate on my boy Ben.
[31:34] SPEAKER_00: Wow.
[31:36] SPEAKER_00: That is amazing.
[31:38] SPEAKER_04: Clap back.
[31:40] SPEAKER_04: We've just lost a listener.
[31:42] unknown: Yeah.
[31:43] SPEAKER_00: Okay, Greg, question.
[31:45] SPEAKER_00: It's quick maths.
[31:46] SPEAKER_00: If you combined Ben Canute's finish time at Marbella 70.3 worlds and his finish time at Iron Man Arizona, would they combined be faster than said's time at Iron Man Nice?
[31:57] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, because Ben must have gone like 740 something in Arizona.
[32:01] SPEAKER_03: He went 730 something, I think.
[32:03] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, and under under four hours in Marbella.
[32:05] SPEAKER_00: So oh said, you've gone, you've fucked up here.
[32:08] SPEAKER_00: You didn't realise our boy Greg was gonna go search your name.
[32:12] SPEAKER_00: That is that's good, Greg.
[32:13] SPEAKER_04: Well, you should have posted under a pseudonym or something.
[32:19] SPEAKER_00: Next week we get a comment from like puppy dog one, two, three, four, five, six, seven.
[32:24] SPEAKER_00: Fuck Greg Harper.
[32:29] SPEAKER_00: Oh, that's brilliant, Greg.
[32:30] SPEAKER_00: All right.
[32:31] SPEAKER_00: Um, JMO Dwyer57 says, see if you can get Jess Liamonth to drop by for some stories for the grand final in Qatar.
[32:38] SPEAKER_00: Just listen to her Dubai wrap-up.
[32:40] SPEAKER_00: She's got to be the funniest pro triathlete in Trithlon now.
[32:43] SPEAKER_00: Tampons and post-race drug testing.
[32:45] SPEAKER_00: Yikes.
[32:47] SPEAKER_00: Okay, um, you had me for the first half, and then the second half made me think we're definitely gonna need Vicky here for this conversation because I don't know if myself, Apo, and Greg are ready for those stories.
[32:56] SPEAKER_00: But I agree, I do think Jess Learmonth, particularly in 2026, could make a great co-host of this podcast.
[33:03] SPEAKER_00: And I know her and Vicky are friends, and Vicki's got two children under two years of age, so she's not always able to be here.
[33:09] SPEAKER_00: Could Jess Learmonth be the rotating co-host we've been looking for?
[33:14] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Jess is so entertaining.
[33:16] SPEAKER_04: I think I worry that we might need like a translator for some of her thick um I think she's like Northern England um accent.
[33:24] SPEAKER_04: Like I can understand most of it because my mum and dad are from that area, but um yeah, Jess is she's a treasure, and I love watching her race.
[33:32] SPEAKER_04: Like, she's just so animated talking to the camera, giving people high fives, talking to the spectators while she's racing.
[33:38] SPEAKER_04: Um, yeah.
[33:39] SPEAKER_04: I love to see Jess do well.
[33:42] SPEAKER_00: I think we all know by now that fueling your training and racing has become such a massive part of getting the most out of yourself as an athlete.
[33:49] SPEAKER_00: And if you're someone who doesn't realize that or knows it but still does a lot of faster training or just wings your day-to-day training nutrition, or even worse, your racing nutrition, then you need to stop doing that.
[34:00] SPEAKER_00: And the best way for you to fuel your training and racing is using precision, fuel and hydration.
[34:05] SPEAKER_00: Precision's PF90, PF30, PF30 caffeine, and flow gel are the best gels on the market.
[34:11] SPEAKER_00: They taste great, their texture is incredible, unlike almost every other gel I've used.
[34:15] SPEAKER_00: And the packaging they come in is just so easy to use, which is low-key a huge benefit.
[34:20] SPEAKER_00: They also have energy chews, which are a nice mix-up from gels and honestly probably taste even better than gels.
[34:26] SPEAKER_00: They're really easy to use on the bike or out on a long run.
[34:28] SPEAKER_00: They're just a great mix-up.
[34:30] SPEAKER_00: They also have a carbohydrate drink mix, which is great to use on the bike, or if you've got someone riding next to you while you do a long run, or just to have on pool deck while you swim.
[34:39] SPEAKER_00: It's an awesome option for that.
[34:41] SPEAKER_00: Precision, they just make the best training and racing nutrition on the market.
[34:45] SPEAKER_00: There's not even a close second, in my opinion.
[34:47] SPEAKER_00: So if you're using other brands, at least give precision a try because I think you'll like them more and you'll realize why they're literally taking over the triton fueling market.
[34:56] SPEAKER_00: It's not because they spend a heap of dollars marketing, because they really don't compare to some other big brands.
[35:02] SPEAKER_00: It's just because their stuff is the best.
[35:04] SPEAKER_00: So try it for yourself.
[35:05] SPEAKER_00: Head over to Precision Fuel and Hydration's website and use the discount code TTH25 for 15% off your first order.
[35:14] SPEAKER_04: M.H.
[35:14] SPEAKER_04: Ballum says, Do you think the debacle in Dubai will hurt the PTO's ability to attract the top talent next year?
[35:21] SPEAKER_04: And that's an interesting question because we also got something similar from uh Coco Conis who says Paula Finlay said that she has zero trust that the PTO will post content that paints her in a good light.
[35:33] SPEAKER_04: If she messes up, it's going on social media.
[35:36] SPEAKER_04: Doesn't seem like the T-100 really has the pros' best interest in mind, and doesn't seem like a brand that athlete sponsors want to get behind.
[35:44] SPEAKER_04: And that's interesting, right?
[35:46] SPEAKER_04: Because there was quite a bit of um hubbub around the T-100's debacle in Dubai and how the content team handled it, right?
[35:55] SPEAKER_04: Like they were almost like creating content out of their mistake, which I think didn't really paint them in a good light.
[36:05] SPEAKER_04: And I think it's interesting.
[36:07] SPEAKER_04: I think that what happened in Dubai has probably broken the trust of a few athletes, and people probably are looking at Iron Man a little bit more um, you know, with more gusto for 2026 because that's a well-oiled machine.
[36:22] SPEAKER_04: They definitely know what they're getting, all the races are planned out, it's easy to plan their season.
[36:26] SPEAKER_04: I think it's just more of a safe bet, betting with the Iron Man Pro Series at this moment.
[36:31] SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, I'm rooting for the PTO.
[36:34] SPEAKER_04: Like I want to see it do well, but it's it's hard.
[36:37] SPEAKER_04: I think it's hard for the athletes to put all their trust in the PTO because with the changing of courses, with what's what's happened in Dubai and things like that, it just makes it really challenging for the athletes to plan out their season.
[36:48] SPEAKER_03: And it's it's all about how they respond though, too, you know.
[36:51] SPEAKER_03: Like Jack says, it's not hard to gain back trust or like get people pumped about it again.
[36:56] SPEAKER_03: So, you know, it's not there's that old saying, it's like, oh, it's not how many times you knock get knocked down, but it's what you do when you get backed up.
[37:03] SPEAKER_03: So the PTO or T100 got knocked down.
[37:06] SPEAKER_03: The content thing is interesting.
[37:08] SPEAKER_03: I mean, they're just trying to create viral reels, essentially.
[37:12] SPEAKER_03: So yeah, I mean it's all it's probably just some like interns doing social media.
[37:15] SPEAKER_03: So I don't know if it really aligns with what the people at the top maybe want them to be posting about.
[37:20] SPEAKER_03: So that is like an interesting conundrum.
[37:22] SPEAKER_03: Like, how far do you lean into your own mistakes to like create awareness and people talking about it versus hey, you're kind of just painting yourselves in a negative light?
[37:30] SPEAKER_03: It's like it is a fine balance, right?
[37:32] SPEAKER_03: Like all publicity is good publicity, like to an extent.
[37:35] SPEAKER_04: I don't necessarily necessarily agree with that all publicity is good publicity.
[37:39] SPEAKER_04: Yes, to an extent it is, but I mean, I think if the T100 had the choice between the debacle in Dubai happening and not, they would choose not to happen despite I'm more pumped though about the grand final kind of like yes, but has that done damage to the brand, right?
[37:54] SPEAKER_04: Like we're pumped as like you know, people and people that love to talk about Triflon and watch races and things, but has that done you know irreparable damage to the T100's brand?
[38:04] SPEAKER_00: No, I I couldn't disagree more, Apo.
[38:06] SPEAKER_00: I think this was the best thing.
[38:08] SPEAKER_00: I think it was the best thing that's happened to the T100 this year.
[38:10] SPEAKER_00: We've never talked this much about the T100.
[38:13] SPEAKER_00: There's never been more eyeballs on the T100.
[38:15] SPEAKER_00: This is the first period all year the T100 have dominated Iron Man from a from a like a trifle on Zeitgeist perspective.
[38:22] SPEAKER_00: This this was great.
[38:23] SPEAKER_00: And yes, Martin Van Riel might not race for the T100 next year.
[38:26] SPEAKER_00: Like there's every chance.
[38:27] SPEAKER_04: Whether he wants to or not.
[38:30] SPEAKER_04: Probably.
[38:31] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[38:34] SPEAKER_00: But yeah, and like I don't think this debacle in Dubai, isolated, has really done much.
[38:42] SPEAKER_00: I think it's kind of more death by a thousand cuts.
[38:44] SPEAKER_00: I think I think the T100 have just had lots of little things over the course of two years that's hurt trust from the pros.
[38:50] SPEAKER_00: And and the sponsors thing is a really salient point.
[38:53] SPEAKER_00: Sponsors don't put the same bonuses in contract for T100 races as they do big Iron Man races.
[38:58] SPEAKER_00: So if you're the top people, male or female, and you have a contract with, let's say, precision fuel and hydration, your performance bonus for the podium at the Iron Man World Championships is going to be higher than the grand final at the T100 in 2026.
[39:12] SPEAKER_00: So that is a big factor that gets talked about a lot behind the scenes in professional triathon, but maybe not on podcasts like this.
[39:18] SPEAKER_00: And that might be a big, big factor in 2026.
[39:22] SPEAKER_00: But we also got to keep in mind that in 2026 the T100 are changing the way they're going about the series and injecting a little bit more prize money per race and no contracts and that kind of thing.
[39:31] SPEAKER_00: Um the Paula Finlay thing, that's interesting.
[39:33] SPEAKER_00: Uh that's probably more personal to Paula.
[39:36] SPEAKER_00: Uh, I don't really have an opinion on that.
[39:38] SPEAKER_00: I don't I don't think it's um up to the T100 necessarily to paint people in good or bad lights.
[39:42] SPEAKER_00: It's just if they have what whatever they have, they have and they should post.
[39:46] SPEAKER_00: Um but I do agree they kind of look for viral moments a little too much on their on their Instagram.
[39:51] SPEAKER_03: All right, our Tesh says the real winner on the day of Dubai T100 is the TTH podcast.
[39:58] SPEAKER_03: At this point, the show's gotten so good and anticipated that watching races is just the pregame until the next TTH debrief drops.
[40:07] SPEAKER_03: That's the real show.
[40:08] SPEAKER_03: Also, waiting the extra 24 hours was grueling, not gonna lie.
[40:12] SPEAKER_03: And James Domini says, fucking finally been waiting days for this.
[40:17] SPEAKER_03: So that's obviously we are trying to get Vicky on, and she is just like, Oh, I've got kids, like, I'm so busy.
[40:23] SPEAKER_03: So we're putting that all on Vicky.
[40:25] SPEAKER_03: So if you have any if you if you're mad about the the podcast coming out day late, just message Vicky and say, What the heck, Vicky?
[40:32] SPEAKER_03: Um, so that's her fault.
[40:33] SPEAKER_03: And oh, we appreciate uh that you like to listen to us debrief it because we like talking about it.
[40:38] SPEAKER_03: Um we just were talking about the T100.
[40:40] SPEAKER_03: What if Sam Ranoof comes out next year and just goes, We want all the best pros.
[40:44] SPEAKER_03: What can I do to get you here?
[40:46] SPEAKER_03: And he just kind of puts out a message, and that's kind of what I've been thinking about.
[40:49] SPEAKER_03: Like he needs to get out there and say, Hey Christian, hey Gusov, we want you on the T100.
[40:54] SPEAKER_03: What's it gonna take to get you guys here?
[40:55] SPEAKER_03: And yeah, maybe that could be something that they could do uh moving forward next year.
[40:59] SPEAKER_00: Fucking amen, Greg.
[41:00] SPEAKER_00: That is genius.
[41:01] SPEAKER_00: Everything that Sam Renouf can do to be public-facing, to show that he cares, to show that he's trying to bring the best people in, trying to make the best product, is good for the T100.
[41:10] SPEAKER_00: Sam Renouf needs to be on the Instagram every week of the of the T100, I reckon.
[41:14] SPEAKER_00: I I think that is a brilliant idea by you.
[41:16] SPEAKER_00: And like you said earlier in the podcast, Greg, if Sam Renouf isn't at the T100 grand final with a bell on the last lap and a lap counter saying final lap, he's missed the biggest opportunity.
[41:27] SPEAKER_00: There should be a T100 camera person standing right next to him and post it on Instagram straight away.
[41:32] SPEAKER_00: If he does that, combined with the video he's just done, Sam Renouf is right on the precipice of turning things around from a publicity standpoint and a PR standpoint.
[41:43] SPEAKER_00: Let's just watch this space because I feel like Sam might listen to podcasts like this and and I think he does listen.
[41:49] SPEAKER_00: I think he he pretends that he doesn't listen, but I think he does hear public feedback.
[41:54] SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I'm with you.
[41:55] SPEAKER_00: Sam Renouf becoming more likable and doing things like that, Greg is genius.
[41:58] SPEAKER_04: Do you think the PTO ever brings in, you know, just backs up a truck full of money to athletes like Christian, Gustav and those and just do they get more cutthroat and say you can't race we're gonna pay you this much money, but you cannot race any Iron Man events for this year?
[42:17] SPEAKER_04: Do you think they ever do that?
[42:18] SPEAKER_04: Because I know they've tried to play nice with Iron Man and they didn't want to restrict athletes in that way, but it's it's pretty clear that it's hurting them, right?
[42:26] SPEAKER_04: Do they ever go back on that and just make it exclusive and back up loads of cash to athletes?
[42:32] SPEAKER_00: Apo, can I answer your question with a question?
[42:35] SPEAKER_00: Can I get you guys to A, put a dollar figure amount to it?
[42:38] SPEAKER_00: What would it have to be?
[42:39] SPEAKER_00: And who would your top three athletes that they that they go and do this to be in 2026?
[42:45] SPEAKER_04: Like it would have to be upwards of a couple of hundred grand, right?
[42:48] SPEAKER_04: Like they already had the top paid the top athletes.
[42:52] SPEAKER_04: I don't know what the figure ended up being, but it must have been over a hundred thousand dollars for those top-ranked athletes.
[42:58] SPEAKER_04: Um so to get guys like Lionel, Christian, Gustav, it's probably gonna have to be a couple of hundred thousand dollars, right?
[43:05] SPEAKER_04: For them to go all exclusive on T100 and do no Iron Man.
[43:09] SPEAKER_04: And I mean, money talks.
[43:11] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I would say it's probably closer to a half a million.
[43:14] SPEAKER_03: If you got Lucy and Gustav and Christian to forego the Iron Man World Championship, that would be very interesting and like put shined a big light on T100, but you'd have to pay them tons of money, I think, because like you said, Kona can make you maybe potentially more money than that.
[43:32] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I think it's Lionel, Christian, and Gustav, and I think the number's close to a million dollars, which sounds crazy and people might think is crazy, but I think people don't realise how much money those kind of guys can make and are making.
[43:43] SPEAKER_00: Like the Norwegians, you would hate to know what they make, I reckon, particularly if they win big races and get a sponsorship bonus.
[43:49] SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I think five hundred thousand minimum, probably more more around the seven fifty to a million dollar mark to get 'em.
[43:55] SPEAKER_03: All right.
[43:56] SPEAKER_03: Mandy McCoy says the beating up on Hayden Wild is getting a A bit out of hand.
[44:01] SPEAKER_03: The guy has passion and wears his heart on his sleeve.
[44:04] SPEAKER_03: No one could have made the comeback he had this year.
[44:07] SPEAKER_03: Do we forget his graciousness with Alex Yi?
[44:10] SPEAKER_03: You're like keyboard warriors, but with bullying voices.
[44:13] SPEAKER_03: Now, I don't know why I got all the Hayden comments for the day, but I'm I'm confused about what the the forget his graciousness with Alex Yee.
[44:21] SPEAKER_03: Like, what do you mean?
[44:22] SPEAKER_03: Like when he's just nice to the guy that routinely whoops on him?
[44:25] SPEAKER_03: Like Alex Yee just dominates Hayden Wilde at any turn, any race, no matter what.
[44:31] SPEAKER_03: So then he's like, I mean, what he can't talk shit on Alex Yee because he he loses.
[44:35] SPEAKER_03: So I don't know what graciousness you're talking about.
[44:37] SPEAKER_03: And yeah, I mean he's got passion, we like it.
[44:40] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think he's good for the sport.
[44:42] SPEAKER_03: But uh doesn't mean I don't have a an opinion about it.
[44:44] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, it's quite hard to see why you get all the Hayden Wilde questions, Greg.
[44:48] SPEAKER_00: I mean, it doesn't make any sense to me.
[44:50] SPEAKER_04: Greg purposely picks them all out for himself so we can uh so we can go on another Hayden rant.
[44:55] SPEAKER_00: Um Greg writes all his own comments.
[44:57] SPEAKER_00: Greg picks most of these comments and then says stuff like that.
[45:00] SPEAKER_04: Hayden, poor Hayden, he's been copping it a little bit, and I like, yeah, some of that is my doing as well.
[45:05] SPEAKER_04: But Hayden's a phenomenal athlete, and I don't mind the passion.
[45:08] SPEAKER_04: I think it's quite entertaining, and I think I'm not saying that Hayden's a villain, but people like a villain, right?
[45:15] SPEAKER_04: Like people like those polarizing figures, and I think Hayden is doing that quite well, and he's he's so dominant, and yeah, I kinda like the passion.
[45:25] SPEAKER_04: Um some things, you know, some there's been some things that I haven't really loved about Hayden.
[45:31] SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, I don't think I don't think it's the passion and um things that I don't like.
[45:38] SPEAKER_04: I think it was more about the uh the shoe and bottle situation that um that got me a little bit rustled my feathers.
[45:45] SPEAKER_04: Um but yeah, I like Hayden and he's a great athlete and he's good for the sport.
[45:48] SPEAKER_00: Mandy, I'll just translate.
[45:50] SPEAKER_00: Apo thought that Hayden was being a cheat.
[45:52] SPEAKER_00: Greg doesn't like that he's cheating as well and sometimes uh sprays officials.
[45:56] SPEAKER_00: I like it.
[45:56] SPEAKER_00: I think Hayden should go full bad guy.
[45:58] SPEAKER_00: The triath on world needs a bad guy.
[46:00] SPEAKER_00: We're all too nice, everyone's too introverted and keeps themselves.
[46:04] SPEAKER_00: I I mean Hayden, I think he should double and triple down and become the bad guy of Trithlon.
[46:10] SPEAKER_00: The single hardest thing about training is being consistent.
[46:14] SPEAKER_00: And there's nothing more frustrating than when you want to be consistent or you've finally found some consistency and you get yet another running-related injury like Achilles pain, a stress fractural reaction, runner's knee, or some plan of fasciitis.
[46:26] SPEAKER_00: That's exactly where lever can help.
[46:28] SPEAKER_00: Lever is a tool that allows you to keep training while reducing impact so you can recover, rebuild, and stay on track with your running.
[46:36] SPEAKER_00: Lever is a bodyweight support system that attaches to your treadmill and can remove up to 45 pounds or 20 kilos of your body weight while you run.
[46:44] SPEAKER_00: By reducing impact, it helps you train through little niggly injuries, safely rebuild after some time off running, and increase your mileage without fear of breaking down.
[46:53] SPEAKER_00: And it's not just for rehabbing, although that is a great use for it, it's also a tool for performance.
[46:58] SPEAKER_00: What many people don't know is that seven of the top 11 women at the 2024 IM World Championships used Lever to train and recover in the lead up to the race, including the world champion.
[47:10] SPEAKER_00: Lever is lightweight, it's portable, and connects with a digital scale so you can dial in exactly how much load you want to take off while you run.
[47:19] SPEAKER_00: Exclusive to the Triton hour listeners, you can use the code TTH to get you 20% off your Lever system.
[47:26] SPEAKER_00: Um, to do that, just visit levermovement.com and start running smarter today.
[47:32] SPEAKER_00: Get consistent in your running.
[47:34] SPEAKER_00: It's the main thing that will get you running faster.
[47:39] SPEAKER_03: All right, that is the Spotify comments wrapped up.
[47:42] SPEAKER_03: Now, this next segment that we have on the day, we're calling on the spot questions.
[47:47] SPEAKER_03: Apo and I have both prepared questions, but the the the caveat here is we didn't tell each other beforehand.
[47:53] SPEAKER_03: So they're questions with no notice.
[47:56] SPEAKER_03: You must answer the questions you are asked, and you must answer them honestly.
[48:00] SPEAKER_03: However, every week you'll get one quote, I'll answer that next week.
[48:05] SPEAKER_03: You get one week to think about it, and then you must answer that question the following week.
[48:10] SPEAKER_03: So what we'll do is we'll start with Apo.
[48:13] SPEAKER_03: He'll ask a question to Jack, he'll ask a question for me, and then we'll go to me, and then I'll ask one for Jack and Apo, and uh we'll see if anyone sits on the fence or uh ignores a question, and that's probably gonna be Apple Apple.
[48:26] SPEAKER_04: I've got one, here you go, Jack.
[48:28] SPEAKER_04: This podcast has taken a few different forms over the years.
[48:31] SPEAKER_04: Does any singular podcast stand out to you as your favorite episode that you've ever done, and conversely, any episode that stands out as your worst?
[48:41] SPEAKER_00: Okay, I'll start with the worst one.
[48:42] SPEAKER_00: There's been three episodes that have been recorded and not released.
[48:47] SPEAKER_00: The worst of them was the one with Florian Anger, which was the most desar.
[48:53] SPEAKER_00: It was the Dubai T100 equivalent of a podcast.
[48:57] SPEAKER_00: And I I I've I've let three people listen to it, and all three of them have been like, that is just insane.
[49:04] SPEAKER_00: Like it was insane, and I won't tell you why, but look, we didn't release it, and it was crazy.
[49:11] SPEAKER_00: Um there's been some other ones that have been recorded and not released that you know uh I won't talk about, but they're they're the three worst one.
[49:19] SPEAKER_00: The Florian Angert one, this was like three years ago, so I feel like I can talk about it.
[49:22] SPEAKER_00: Statue of Limitations is lifted.
[49:24] SPEAKER_00: The best one, I don't know.
[49:26] SPEAKER_00: Can I I I think the best podcasting I've ever done is now.
[49:30] SPEAKER_00: Like I think this show that we're doing now is the best the podcast's ever been.
[49:33] SPEAKER_00: I I love it when it's us three and Vicky.
[49:35] SPEAKER_00: I think the daily podcasts leading into Nice, Kona, and Mar Bay are the best podcasts we've ever done.
[49:40] SPEAKER_00: And I I I honestly I don't, I'm not just saying that because it's now.
[49:44] SPEAKER_00: I I really do think this is the best the podcast's ever been.
[49:47] SPEAKER_00: It's the funniest, it's the most entertaining, it's the most enjoyable to record.
[49:50] SPEAKER_00: I love doing the interview style, but to me, this is this has kind of taken four years for us to get here, and I think it's um it's uh it's been worth it.
[49:58] SPEAKER_04: All right.
[49:59] SPEAKER_04: I'm interested to hear about that.
[50:00] SPEAKER_04: Maybe maybe the uh after hours we can dig into the Florian Gird interview.
[50:06] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, let's do it.
[50:07] SPEAKER_00: Let's do that.
[50:08] SPEAKER_00: Let's tell people about this now.
[50:09] SPEAKER_00: So for people who don't know, as soon as we finish recording this, we keep the recording going for 30 minutes and then we upload that to Patreon.
[50:17] SPEAKER_00: The link to Patreon is in the description of this podcast.
[50:20] SPEAKER_00: So you can just go click on that, sign up, and you'll get to listen to the after hours podcast.
[50:24] SPEAKER_00: We also do another podcast.
[50:25] SPEAKER_00: Me and Apppo do a training podcast on there.
[50:27] SPEAKER_00: So you get at least two free bonus exclusive weekly podcasts if you sign up.
[50:32] SPEAKER_00: But the idea of the after hours podcast is that we can talk about anything that we feel we can't talk about on the podcast, like that we thought we think maybe is a little bit too risky to talk about on the podcast.
[50:43] SPEAKER_00: It's also just a general chat, uh debrief post-podcast.
[50:46] SPEAKER_00: So if you like the sound of that, uh go and sign up and and listen in.
[50:49] SPEAKER_04: Greg, what made you make the switch from swimming to triathlon?
[50:53] SPEAKER_04: And could you have made it as a swimmer?
[50:56] SPEAKER_03: No, I couldn't have made it as a swimmer.
[50:58] SPEAKER_03: Um, absolutely not.
[51:00] SPEAKER_03: I was definitely not fast enough.
[51:02] SPEAKER_03: And I'd already always planned to do triathlons after college because I had done them as a youth, so that was always on my game plan.
[51:10] SPEAKER_03: Like I knew I was gonna do something after my swim career, but I mean swimming got me into college, but yeah, I mean I would have kept being a swimmer if I could have.
[51:18] SPEAKER_03: Um I just wanted to be an Olympian, so whatever I thought was the best path to get me there, and I thought it was triathlon, so uh still trying.
[51:27] SPEAKER_03: Now, I'm not gonna ask Apo about his swim times because that's gonna be boring.
[51:31] SPEAKER_03: Um question for you, Apo, though.
[51:34] SPEAKER_03: Post triathlon, does it scare you?
[51:38] SPEAKER_04: Ooh, that is deep.
[51:40] SPEAKER_04: I mean, yeah, it it does for sure.
[51:42] SPEAKER_04: And I'm 35, I'm thinking, you know, trying to put some you know, ducks in a row to see uh or to have something lined up, but yeah, it scares me a little bit, and um part of me just wants like someone to come in and be like, oh, here's a job for you, you can start on Monday, and I'll be like, sweet.
[52:00] SPEAKER_04: But you know, I know that doesn't always happen or very rarely happens.
[52:03] SPEAKER_04: Um, but yeah, I think when you've been an athlete your whole life, like I have, like I've done trythons since I was 13, never really had a proper, like I've worked part-time and things, but I've never like had a full-time job, um, so to speak.
[52:19] SPEAKER_04: Like trython has been my identity for more than 20 years, so it yeah, it scares me, but I think it's also kind of exciting as well, you know.
[52:28] SPEAKER_04: Like it's daunting, but you could literally do whatever you want, right?
[52:33] SPEAKER_04: So I'm trying to reframe that into thinking I could literally do whatever I want.
[52:37] SPEAKER_04: It's like almost another second chance at um, you know, something that something else that I want to do.
[52:42] SPEAKER_03: All right, Jack.
[52:43] SPEAKER_03: You've coached athletes to two top ten in Iron Man worlds the last two years.
[52:48] SPEAKER_03: Do you think you deserve more credit as an elite coach?
[52:51] SPEAKER_00: Uh I don't think anyone deserves anything.
[52:54] SPEAKER_00: I think you uh you get what you get in life, and if you don't get it and you think you deserve more, then get better, not bitter.
[53:00] SPEAKER_00: And I live by that, I live by that saying.
[53:02] SPEAKER_00: Uh you won't you won't hear me get better bitter about it, uh, Greg.
[53:06] SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna keep getting better.
[53:08] SPEAKER_00: I love coaching, I love performance.
[53:10] SPEAKER_00: That's always been my passion.
[53:11] SPEAKER_00: But I'm the podcast guy, and people don't take the podcast guy seriously.
[53:15] SPEAKER_00: So I understand that.
[53:16] SPEAKER_00: Even if there is only two coaches who have coached two separate athletes to the top ten at the uh Iron Man World Championships in the last two years, and uh that's me and Ben Rezzel, and Ben Rezzel will probably win coach of the year in 2025.
[53:29] SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I mean I'm probably second best, um, just like you are the second best swimmer in Trithon, Greg.
[53:35] SPEAKER_03: Fourth, and and dropping every single day.
[53:40] SPEAKER_00: Sam Long being number one.
[53:41] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, of course.
[53:42] SPEAKER_04: All right, Greg.
[53:44] SPEAKER_04: Who's an athlete that you initially thought might be a dick in the way they carried themselves online, but then you met them and realize you were wrong about your initial impressions?
[53:54] SPEAKER_04: Because I've had that happen to me, right?
[53:56] SPEAKER_04: You you see people online and their Instagrams, and you're like, ah, this you know, this idiot or this dickhead, and then you meet them, you're like, uh, I'm sorry, I was wrong.
[54:04] SPEAKER_03: Easy question.
[54:06] SPEAKER_03: Justin Reale.
[54:07] SPEAKER_03: I mean, you see him flexing in the mirror on a cell phone, you think, oh man, this guy fooled himself, but god damn, he is a nice guy and he's a caring friend.
[54:17] SPEAKER_04: So you don't know what's funny?
[54:18] SPEAKER_04: That is a great answer because I was in a very similar boat, and the first time I met Justin was this year at Oceanside, and I saw Justin, I saw he had a YouTube channel, and I'm like, it's pretender, you know, loves himself.
[54:32] SPEAKER_04: And then um, because he's sponsored by Win Republic, one of my sponsors as well.
[54:36] SPEAKER_04: And we met at one of the expos there at Oceanside, and Justin came up to me and goes, Oh, you're Sam Appleton, you know, you've um I've looked up to you for so many years, and and I was thinking, bro, I've been like looking at this guy's hate watching his YouTube videos for like six months.
[54:55] SPEAKER_00: Me and Greg have messaged about this before, Apo, about how we both just thought Justin was a loser.
[55:00] SPEAKER_00: Like we thought he was an absolute loser.
[55:01] SPEAKER_03: And now he don't put words in my mouth.
[55:04] SPEAKER_00: I've got the message that says that.
[55:05] SPEAKER_00: And now we both just love him.
[55:07] SPEAKER_00: Like we would both consider him a friend now.
[55:09] SPEAKER_00: He's he's actually just a legend of a bloke and so caring and nice.
[55:12] SPEAKER_00: I reckon that's a good one.
[55:13] SPEAKER_00: I know you used to hate Sam Long, Apo.
[55:15] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I mean, I he I think, and even he would admit this, and I don't think he would mind me saying, but through that COVID time, they're like he came out very brash and brazen, and it was it was a very similar situation, like rubbed me the wrong way and a few others, I think.
[55:32] SPEAKER_04: And then all the old heads are like, God damn it, who's this guy?
[55:36] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, yeah, yeah.
[55:37] SPEAKER_04: The old heads.
[55:38] SPEAKER_04: And then Josh Amberger and I did that um, like through lockdown, the PTO did a an interview or something, and Josh, I feel like Josh was leading the charge more than me, but um, you know, had some choice words for Sam, and then now I actually really, really like Sam, and we get along really well, and um, you know, when we see each other at races, we always have a bit of a chat and things, and yeah.
[56:00] SPEAKER_04: I mean, it was one of those situations where you kind of judge people before you meet them, which I'm trying to be better at, so sorry, Sam.
[56:08] SPEAKER_04: Alright, Jack.
[56:09] SPEAKER_04: Another podcast question.
[56:11] SPEAKER_04: Do you have a white whale, someone you wish you could interview, but you have not had the chance to yet?
[56:16] SPEAKER_00: Oh, who haven't I interviewed?
[56:18] SPEAKER_00: I haven't we haven't had Gustav on the show.
[56:22] SPEAKER_00: We haven't had yeah, we've had Alistair Brownley.
[56:26] SPEAKER_00: Alistair's been on.
[56:27] SPEAKER_00: Um, I did a podcast with Alistair, maybe like 2023 or 2024, one of them.
[56:33] SPEAKER_00: I chatted to him.
[56:34] SPEAKER_04: What about a how they train with Jarn?
[56:36] SPEAKER_04: That would have been that's surely like pretty high up, like diving into Jarn's training, which he's now that he's retired, I th I thought Yarn would come out and be a little bit more of an open book, but someone needs to get those secrets.
[56:49] SPEAKER_00: We're doing a Tal all.
[56:50] SPEAKER_00: We're doing I think early December.
[56:51] SPEAKER_00: It's it's November 23rd when we're recording this.
[56:54] SPEAKER_00: And uh early December, we've got a date picked.
[56:56] SPEAKER_00: So me and Jarn are gonna sit down and I'm gonna title the episode Yarn for Dino, the Tal All Podcast, because he's promised me that's what it will be when we do it.
[57:04] SPEAKER_00: So that's happening.
[57:05] SPEAKER_00: That's why I don't say that.
[57:07] SPEAKER_00: It would be Yarn.
[57:07] SPEAKER_00: I I love Jarn, and I can't wait for it because I know all of Jarn's stories because I've been mates with him for two years now, and he's told me so many of them.
[57:14] SPEAKER_00: And every time he tells them, like, this is this needs to be in a podcast.
[57:17] SPEAKER_00: And so I've just written down all of my favourite Yarn stories.
[57:20] SPEAKER_00: I'm just gonna ask him on the podcast, and hopefully he answers them all honestly.
[57:23] SPEAKER_00: And here hearing about his training, his methodology, his views on everything will be really, really good when people uh when people do get the chance to listen to it, which I'm hoping will be in mid mid or late December.
[57:35] SPEAKER_00: Um so that is coming.
[57:36] SPEAKER_00: I I think Gustav, Gustav Eden, he's the he's the big dog of the current athletes who who hasn't been on.
[57:41] SPEAKER_00: So yeah, I'd probably say Gustav Eden, I'd love to have on the podcast.
[57:44] SPEAKER_00: Gustav is probably my favourite athlete as a fan.
[57:46] SPEAKER_00: Christian and Gustav are my two favourite athletes.
[57:48] SPEAKER_00: So I've had Christian on multiple times.
[57:50] SPEAKER_00: Gustav hasn't come on.
[57:52] SPEAKER_00: Maybe he hates us, but uh we don't hate him, we love him.
[57:55] SPEAKER_00: So yeah, Gustav Eden.
[57:56] SPEAKER_04: Has he left you on red?
[57:57] SPEAKER_04: Has he uh not responded to your uh messages or I don't know if Gustav wants to come on.
[58:02] SPEAKER_00: That's the honest answer.
[58:03] SPEAKER_04: He doesn't do many podcasts, really.
[58:05] SPEAKER_04: Like besides his own um what the Norwegian method one, he doesn't like there's not too many out there, I don't think.
[58:12] SPEAKER_00: So I don't think he has huge interest in coming on and talking about his training and being asked like detailed questions and that kind of thing.
[58:19] SPEAKER_00: I think he he would much prefer to come on a format like this.
[58:21] SPEAKER_00: But you're talking about a sit-down interview where they tell all, they tell you all about their training.
[58:26] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I don't think he he would enjoy that kind of thing from from my uh from my experience.
[58:31] SPEAKER_03: Question for Appo.
[58:32] SPEAKER_03: Now I'm gonna go a training question for you.
[58:35] SPEAKER_03: The difference between running 113 off the bike and 117, is it bike strength or is it run strength?
[58:42] SPEAKER_04: I would say probably bike strength.
[58:46] SPEAKER_04: I think the ability to get off the bike fresher and run to your capacity, I think is more important.
[58:54] SPEAKER_04: Because running 113, like if you break that down into mile splits or kilometer splits, it's not that fast, right?
[59:00] SPEAKER_04: Like you just need to have the resilience and get off the bike, like you need to have the ability to ride hard and then get off and access that run speed, right?
[59:07] SPEAKER_04: Which isn't that fast.
[59:08] SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I would say it's probably if you're struggling to kind of yeah, make that kind of leap from the 117s, um, but your training is indicating that you should be running faster than 117s, I'd say it's more than likely um, yeah, weakness on the bike.
[59:24] SPEAKER_03: All right, and Jack, what is the biggest single common trait among all the best athletes you've come to know in your life?
[59:32] SPEAKER_00: Competitiveness, I think.
[59:34] SPEAKER_00: I think without competitiveness, you're not gonna make it as an athlete.
[59:37] SPEAKER_00: So there's lots of things that make great athletes, but I would say the one overarching thing that the best all have in common is that they want to be the best they can be, they want to beat everyone, they want to prove they're the best.
[59:49] SPEAKER_00: So for me, if you want one trait to make you the best athlete you can possibly be, it's competitiveness.
[59:55] SPEAKER_04: All right, Jack.
[59:56] SPEAKER_04: Another podcast question.
[59:59] SPEAKER_04: Has any athlete that you've interviewed given you an answer to a question that totally took you off guard that you'll never forget?
[1:00:05] SPEAKER_04: And if so, can you please share?
[1:00:08] SPEAKER_00: There's one I edited out that I'm thinking about that manual can say on the after hours podcast.
[1:00:14] SPEAKER_04: Is that another after hours?
[1:00:16] SPEAKER_04: We're just uh Oh, I think it has to be.
[1:00:18] SPEAKER_00: It's just because it's not me who said it, it's the athlete who said it.
[1:00:20] SPEAKER_00: Um, you know what?
[1:00:22] SPEAKER_00: You know the probably the biggest thing that's annoyed me, and I've so I've said this to him, so I'm gonna say it.
[1:00:26] SPEAKER_00: But Matthew Marquart requested that I beep out his average power at Kona.
[1:00:30] SPEAKER_00: So he gave his average power at Kona the first time I chatted to him, and then I had to go out, go through the podcast, find it, and beep over it because he didn't want that number out there.
[1:00:39] SPEAKER_00: So it didn't shock me, but it yeah, it was uh I was kind of surprised by it because no one else has ever asked that.
[1:00:46] SPEAKER_00: And I was telling a story the other day.
[1:00:48] SPEAKER_00: I don't know.
[1:00:49] SPEAKER_00: Do you guys think I should edit this out?
[1:00:50] SPEAKER_00: But I've only ever been asked one time for money when I asked an athlete to come on the podcast.
[1:00:56] SPEAKER_00: Would you be able to guess who that athlete was?
[1:00:58] SPEAKER_04: That would have been a good question to ask.
[1:01:02] SPEAKER_00: I said no, by the way.
[1:01:03] SPEAKER_04: It's got to be someone with some kind of prestige or status, right?
[1:01:08] SPEAKER_04: I mean or or not.
[1:01:11] SPEAKER_00: Should I say it?
[1:01:12] SPEAKER_00: Is that is that throwing someone under the bus too heavy?
[1:01:14] SPEAKER_00: Should I say it?
[1:01:15] SPEAKER_00: Or should I say this for the after hours podcast as well?
[1:01:17] SPEAKER_04: No, just driving up those Patreon subscriptions.
[1:01:21] SPEAKER_04: Or is it male or female?
[1:01:23] SPEAKER_00: Male, not American, not Australian, not Canadian, not from Europe, not from Asia.
[1:01:28] SPEAKER_04: And it's someone that you haven't had on.
[1:01:30] SPEAKER_04: New Zealand?
[1:01:31] SPEAKER_00: Not from New Zealand, South Africa.
[1:01:33] SPEAKER_03: Henry Schoonman.
[1:01:34] SPEAKER_00: Not Henry Schoonman.
[1:01:36] SPEAKER_03: Jamie Riddle.
[1:01:36] SPEAKER_03: Jamie Riddle.
[1:01:37] SPEAKER_00: Not Slim Shady, Jamie Riddle.
[1:01:39] SPEAKER_03: It's Richard Murray, dude.
[1:01:41] SPEAKER_03: It's Richard Murray.
[1:01:42] SPEAKER_03: Richard Murray.
[1:01:43] SPEAKER_00: No, no comment.
[1:01:44] SPEAKER_03: No, because Richard Murray.
[1:01:46] SPEAKER_00: Oh, I did not say that.
[1:01:47] SPEAKER_00: That's just a guess that you're guessing and you don't know.
[1:01:51] SPEAKER_03: Alright, and now we I guess we have to I guess we have to move on now because we obviously don't know the answer to that question.
[1:02:00] SPEAKER_03: All right.
[1:02:01] SPEAKER_03: Last question.
[1:02:02] SPEAKER_03: We'll wrap it up.
[1:02:03] SPEAKER_03: I'm asking Jack, what does Apo need to do to go top 10 at Kona next year?
[1:02:09] SPEAKER_04: Oh swim one minute faster, improve his FTP by 30 watts, and run 10 minutes faster.
[1:02:20] SPEAKER_00: Apo has the makings of someone who could do really well at Kona.
[1:02:24] SPEAKER_00: He swims in a position that's good enough.
[1:02:26] SPEAKER_00: He doesn't need to change anything, he just needs to maintain where he's at.
[1:02:29] SPEAKER_00: Look, if he can swim a little bit, a little bit faster for a little bit less effort, that's never going to be a bad thing.
[1:02:34] SPEAKER_00: But I don't think that's the make or break.
[1:02:35] SPEAKER_00: Apo, when he was at his best, was a strong cyclist relative to the field.
[1:02:39] SPEAKER_00: Now Apo is a weak cyclist compared to the best guys in the sport.
[1:02:43] SPEAKER_00: Apo's good on the bike when he's in a front pack in a North American race and there's no one putting a lot of pressure on the race.
[1:02:48] SPEAKER_00: But at Kona, you can't get away with that.
[1:02:50] SPEAKER_00: There's too many big dogs on the front of the bike putting on a lot of pressure, and that's what's hurt Apo when he's gone into the bigger races.
[1:02:57] SPEAKER_00: That will hurt him again in Kona 2026 if he doesn't fix it.
[1:03:01] SPEAKER_00: And he is the kind of athlete that I think has the potential to do so.
[1:03:05] SPEAKER_00: But I think his bike has a few areas of weakness.
[1:03:09] SPEAKER_00: I think his his upper aerobic stuff is a little weak.
[1:03:12] SPEAKER_00: I think he needs to get a little bit stronger on the bike.
[1:03:14] SPEAKER_00: I, you know, things like his FTP being higher or his second threshold being higher, I think would be a really good place to start.
[1:03:20] SPEAKER_00: And then I think he needs more run volume.
[1:03:22] SPEAKER_00: I don't think the guy does enough run run volume to be really strong on the marathon at a place like Kona.
[1:03:28] SPEAKER_00: So that would be my snapshot of it, Greg.
[1:03:30] SPEAKER_04: Good answer.
[1:03:31] SPEAKER_04: Love it.
[1:03:32] SPEAKER_04: No lies detected.
[1:03:34] SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
[1:03:36] SPEAKER_00: Okay, so a quick break from the show to talk about something that's a game changer, not for your training, but for your online life.
[1:03:43] SPEAKER_00: And that's Nord VPN.
[1:03:45] SPEAKER_00: As triathletes, we're constantly on the move.
[1:03:48] SPEAKER_00: Training camps, races, overseas trips, airports, hotel, Wi-Fi.
[1:03:52] SPEAKER_00: And let's be honest, not all of those connections are secure.
[1:03:56] SPEAKER_00: That's where NordVPN comes in.

[1:04:48] SPEAKER_00: All right, last topic of the day.
[1:04:49] SPEAKER_00: So this is just a little fun one.
[1:04:51] SPEAKER_00: So there was a debate in the group chat this week about who is cooler between Apo and Greg.
[1:04:56] SPEAKER_00: They both obviously thought they were the cooler human.
[1:04:59] SPEAKER_00: So it got me thinking, who do Apo and Greg think they are cooler than in the Trithlon world?
[1:05:04] SPEAKER_00: And will they admit it live on the podcast?
[1:05:07] SPEAKER_00: And so that brings us to today's segment.
[1:05:09] SPEAKER_00: Are you cooler than these people in Trithlon?
[1:05:12] SPEAKER_00: So, Greg, are you cooler than Scott DeRoo?
[1:05:16] SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
[1:05:17] SPEAKER_00: Apo, are you cooler than Scott DeRoo?
[1:05:20] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, absolutely.
[1:05:20] SPEAKER_04: My bank account might not be, but I'm definitely cooler than Scott DeRue.
[1:05:25] SPEAKER_00: I've also got Vicky to text in her responses to all of these as well.
[1:05:28] SPEAKER_00: So Vicky has agreed that both of you are cooler than Scott DeRoo.
[1:05:32] SPEAKER_00: Greg, are you cooler than Sam Ranoof?
[1:05:35] SPEAKER_03: The accent, man.
[1:05:36] SPEAKER_03: I gotta say no.
[1:05:36] SPEAKER_00: Apo, are you cooler than Sam Renoof?
[1:05:38] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I think so.
[1:05:39] SPEAKER_00: Vicki's gone.
[1:05:40] SPEAKER_00: Yes, you're both cooler than Sam Renoof.
[1:05:42] SPEAKER_00: So interesting.
[1:05:44] SPEAKER_00: This is this is not the group chat, Greg, we get.
[1:05:46] SPEAKER_00: Greg, are you cooler than Ari Clare?
[1:05:48] SPEAKER_04: Obviously.
[1:05:50] SPEAKER_00: Appo, are you cooler than Ari Clare?
[1:05:52] SPEAKER_04: You know what?
[1:05:53] SPEAKER_04: As much as I rag on Ari, I'm gonna say no.
[1:05:55] SPEAKER_04: I think Ari is actually a pretty cool customer.
[1:05:58] SPEAKER_04: You know, he's got those little earrings hanging.
[1:06:00] SPEAKER_04: Down.
[1:06:00] SPEAKER_04: You know, when I was in my 20s, I had my ears pierced as well.
[1:06:03] SPEAKER_04: He's got uh, you know, he's he's like a little DJ, he's got his little DJ beats.
[1:06:07] SPEAKER_04: I think Ari's pretty cool, so I'm gonna say that I'm not cooler than Ari.
[1:06:11] SPEAKER_00: Vicki has said that Greg is not cooler than Ari, but Apo is cooler than Ari.
[1:06:16] SPEAKER_04: Greg.
[1:06:16] SPEAKER_04: So we've flipped the script.
[1:06:18] SPEAKER_04: The fuck?
[1:06:19] SPEAKER_00: Greg, are you cooler than Sam Long?
[1:06:22] SPEAKER_04: Yes.
[1:06:23] SPEAKER_00: Apo, are you cooler than Sam Long?
[1:06:25] SPEAKER_04: Yes.
[1:06:26] SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry, I I love Sam, but he is not cool.
[1:06:29] SPEAKER_00: Vicki agrees.
[1:06:30] SPEAKER_00: Greg, are you cooler than Trevor Foley?
[1:06:33] SPEAKER_03: Yes.
[1:06:33] SPEAKER_03: I'm taking a new turn on this, by the way.
[1:06:35] SPEAKER_00: Apo, are you cooler than Trevor Foley?
[1:06:38] SPEAKER_04: I don't know Trevor well enough.
[1:06:40] SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna say yes, though.
[1:06:41] SPEAKER_04: Sorry, Trevor, I know you listen.
[1:06:42] SPEAKER_00: And Vicky's gone that Apo, you are cooler than Trevor Foley, and Greg, you are not cooler than Trevor Foley.
[1:06:48] SPEAKER_00: Greg, are you cool?
[1:06:51] SPEAKER_04: Greg's face.
[1:06:53] SPEAKER_04: If we were recording this, Greg's face, he is livid.
[1:06:58] SPEAKER_00: Greg, are you cooler than Jason West?
[1:07:01] SPEAKER_04: Yes.
[1:07:02] SPEAKER_00: Apo, are you cooler than Jason West?
[1:07:04] SPEAKER_04: What why why have you picked the least cool North American drive leads for us to say yes or no?
[1:07:13] SPEAKER_04: Like, was it?
[1:07:16] SPEAKER_04: I'm sorry, but yes, I'm cooler than Jason West.
[1:07:18] SPEAKER_00: Vicky has gone with Greg is not cooler than Jason West, and Apo is cooler than Jason West.
[1:07:28] SPEAKER_00: Greg, are you cooler than Matthew Marquis?
[1:07:32] SPEAKER_03: Yes, of course.
[1:07:34] SPEAKER_00: Apo! Apo, are you cooler than Matthew Marquis?
[1:07:38] SPEAKER_03: Yes, absolutely.
[1:07:39] SPEAKER_00: Vicky has gone with Greg, you are not cooler than Matthew Marquis.
[1:07:44] SPEAKER_00: Apo, you are cooler than Matthew Marquis.
[1:07:47] SPEAKER_00: Greg's being stitched up.
[1:07:48] SPEAKER_03: I don't care what Vicky has to say anymore.
[1:07:49] SPEAKER_03: Like it she obviously has no authority on that.
[1:07:51] SPEAKER_03: Like, that's a fucking blow, dude.
[1:07:54] SPEAKER_03: Greg's being stitched up.
[1:07:56] SPEAKER_00: Greg, are you cooler than Joe Skipper?
[1:07:59] SPEAKER_00: Hell yeah.
[1:08:00] SPEAKER_00: Apo, are you cooler than Joe Skipper?
[1:08:02] SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
[1:08:03] SPEAKER_00: Okay, Vicky agrees.
[1:08:04] SPEAKER_00: She thinks you're both cooler than Joe Skipper.
[1:08:07] SPEAKER_00: Greg, are you cooler than Lionel Sanders?
[1:08:10] SPEAKER_00: No.
[1:08:10] SPEAKER_00: Apo, are you cooler than Lionel Sanders?
[1:08:13] SPEAKER_04: I mean, when you say Lionel Sanders, I don't think you know Lionel's a great athlete, but I don't think he he doesn't ooze the cool factor, right?
[1:08:21] SPEAKER_04: So I'm gonna say yes.
[1:08:22] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, so Vicki believes you are cooler than Lionel Sanders, Apo, but she does not believe Greg is cooler than Lionel Sanders.
[1:08:32] SPEAKER_00: We'll do three more.
[1:08:34] SPEAKER_00: Greg, are you cooler than Taylor Nib?
[1:08:36] SPEAKER_02: Yes.
[1:08:37] SPEAKER_00: Apo, are you cooler than Taylor Nibb?
[1:08:40] SPEAKER_02: Yes.
