[0:34] SPEAKER_02: Cat at Iron Man Hamburg, and the Iron Man Marathon Records to discuss.
[0:38] SPEAKER_02: Enemy of the Show is back for another week, and to finish a show, one of us four will go through a group intervention for a problem we believe we've uncovered.
[0:47] SPEAKER_02: As always, I'm joined by the most serious and organized, except he was late today, man in triathlon, fresh off racing T100 San Francisco, Justin Riale.
[0:57] SPEAKER_07: Jack, pleasure to be back for episode two.
[0:59] SPEAKER_07: Thanks for having me.
[1:01] SPEAKER_02: The self-proclaimed chosen one is here as always, Ari Claire.
[1:04] SPEAKER_05: I thought I was the most serious and organized man in Triathlon.
[1:08] SPEAKER_02: And again, a bit of a theme with us.
[1:10] SPEAKER_02: The self-proclaimed chosen one of Triathlon Swimming, Greg Harper is here.
[1:15] SPEAKER_02: Hello, mate.
[1:17] SPEAKER_02: And boys, to start off the show, we actually got sent in something from an avid listener who I didn't actually know was a listener of the show, but uh it turns out we have fans everywhere.
[1:28] SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna we're gonna listen to some audio off the top of the show here.
[1:31] SPEAKER_01: Hey guys, Camworth here.
[1:33] SPEAKER_01: Just wanted to check in and let you know.
[1:35] SPEAKER_01: Huge, huge fan of the show.
[1:37] SPEAKER_01: Justin, just the man's, man's man of multitasking.
[1:43] SPEAKER_01: Entrepreneur by I guess day and night, just absolutely kicking goals left, right, and centre, and then kicking us all in the teeth in Iron Man's on a weekend.
[1:53] SPEAKER_01: Dude, I um yeah, as someone else that tries to do everything and sucks at everything, I have huge admiration for you.
[2:02] SPEAKER_01: I've got two photos up in my son's room of examples of men, Novak Djokovic and uh and you're the other photo that he has there.
[2:12] SPEAKER_01: So uh just uh as an example of a man that can just do everything amazingly.
[2:17] SPEAKER_01: Love your work, dude.
[2:19] SPEAKER_01: Jack, I can't do a long run without listening to your show.
[2:23] SPEAKER_01: Uh you are the cornerstone of my of my training.
[2:27] SPEAKER_01: Um love the content, dude.
[2:29] SPEAKER_01: Thanks so much for all the years of great stuff, and it just gets better and better.
[2:34] SPEAKER_01: Goes without saying if we have another child, if it's a girl, we'll call it Jackie and if or Kelly, and obviously if it's a boy, he'll be a Jack or a Kelly.
[2:46] SPEAKER_01: So uh yeah, mate, massive fan.
[2:49] SPEAKER_01: Thanks for everything you do, absolutely love it.
[2:51] SPEAKER_01: Can't wait for the next the next pod to pop up.
[2:54] SPEAKER_01: And Greg, well, I don't really like you.
[2:57] SPEAKER_01: Uh in Oceanside, I've never seen a swim go single file so quickly.
[3:03] SPEAKER_01: I cannot comprehend how you swim that quickly, but as it's the one discipline that every triathlete either is good at and thinks they're getting better at, or says they're going to get better at it, and you're clearly the best.
[3:16] SPEAKER_01: Um to me, mate.
[3:17] SPEAKER_01: You are the OG of the sport at the moment.
[3:19] SPEAKER_01: So um yeah, whenever I'm not there, swim as hard as you can.
[3:24] SPEAKER_01: But I'd appreciate if when I'm there you swim a bit slower.
[3:26] SPEAKER_01: Anyway, guys, can't wait for the next show.
[3:28] SPEAKER_01: Love your work, catch you later.
[3:30] SPEAKER_01: Okay.
[3:34] SPEAKER_02: The legendary Cam Worth listens to the show and he sent in that voice message.
[3:38] SPEAKER_05: Oh, I I know it's because I passed him on the bike at Oceanside and he needed a hex wrench and I didn't have one.
[3:43] SPEAKER_05: And so now I'm the enemy of the show.
[3:45] SPEAKER_05: All right, Cam.
[3:46] SPEAKER_04: No, I I actually passed him with the same situation, but I mean he's saying my praises.
[3:50] SPEAKER_04: So hey Cam, that was really nice.
[3:52] SPEAKER_04: I appreciate the kind words.
[3:53] SPEAKER_04: We're all massive fans as well.
[3:55] SPEAKER_02: So that was completely random.
[3:56] SPEAKER_02: If you want to send in a voice message to the show, if you go to the Triathon Our Instagram page, uh there's a link in the bio that you can just click on and send in a voice message, and we just randomly got that from Cam Worth during the week.
[4:06] SPEAKER_05: So that wasn't fucking random.
[4:07] SPEAKER_05: That was on purpose, and you told him not to fucking talk about me.
[4:11] SPEAKER_05: Guaranteed.
[4:12] SPEAKER_05: New enemy of the show.
[4:13] SPEAKER_05: I had a good one, but new ones to say.
[4:15] SPEAKER_02: It's not true.
[4:16] SPEAKER_02: We didn't we didn't organize any of that.
[4:17] SPEAKER_02: It came in.
[4:18] SPEAKER_02: I don't know whether he forgot whether you were on the show, Ari, or what happened, but he didn't mention you.
[4:23] SPEAKER_02: So yeah, share that Cam Worth.
[4:25] SPEAKER_02: Thank you for listening every week.
[4:26] SPEAKER_02: Okay, boys, let's move on to headlines.
[4:29] SPEAKER_02: There's so much to talk about from a big week of triathlon.
[4:32] SPEAKER_02: Greg, you start us off.
[4:34] SPEAKER_04: Alright, well, my headline of the week is Taylor Nib loses her first middle distance race in I think two years or so.
[4:43] SPEAKER_04: And I mean, I just want to give a shout out to Taylor because there's certain athletes who set the bar, and then it takes everyone some time to like raise their level to catch up.
[4:53] SPEAKER_04: And I thought this was the year that Taylor would get beat because she's been so dominant for the last two years over the middle distance, and yeah, she set the bar, and the girls probably worked all winter to close the gap on the bike, and some of them have.
[5:05] SPEAKER_04: And yeah, she was handed her first loss, but she's gonna come back probably hungry.
[5:10] SPEAKER_04: And yeah, it was it was a good overall race.
[5:12] SPEAKER_04: And um, yeah, I guess shout out to her.
[5:14] SPEAKER_04: I mean, I'm not not shouting out to her because she lost, but it's good to see um yeah, the rivalries and the sport, you know, getting deeper and progressing.
[5:24] SPEAKER_05: I wonder how much she's got like uh Iron Man legs.
[5:29] SPEAKER_05: You know, Texas was a while ago, but and you know, the with a focus this year being the Iron Man World Championships.
[5:36] SPEAKER_05: You know, I wonder how sort of conservative she's being.
[5:39] SPEAKER_05: Because she was like so dominant, especially last year, that I I don't think I wouldn't think everyone else could catch up that quickly, you know, with a winter of bike training.
[5:50] SPEAKER_05: I think it says more about maybe Taylor not being at top form than everyone else having raised their level.
[5:58] SPEAKER_02: I've got like a few things that I'm interested in with this.
[6:01] SPEAKER_02: So we're so used to seeing Taylor dominate on on the bike in a level that she didn't on the weekend.
[6:07] SPEAKER_02: Is it because of the Iron Man training?
[6:09] SPEAKER_02: Is it because of you know her new partnership with Dan Lorang?
[6:13] SPEAKER_02: Like, is that not working compared to her old part her old coaching partnership?
[6:17] SPEAKER_02: She's been going through personal stuff.
[6:18] SPEAKER_02: Like people uh have kind of speculated about the um why she missed Singapore and that she just didn't want to do it and she was targeting Texas, but she did have personal stuff going on in the background.
[6:28] SPEAKER_02: I know that for a fact.
[6:29] SPEAKER_02: Um, I wonder how much that's playing a part.
[6:32] SPEAKER_02: Like, I've taught I've spoken to her a few times.
[6:34] SPEAKER_02: I'm not sure she's loving the sport the same way that maybe she has in the past.
[6:38] SPEAKER_02: Like, we we all know what triflon's like.
[6:40] SPEAKER_02: It's such an all-encompany compassing sport that you have to be obsessive if you want to be at the top, and it's so much harder to stay at the top than it is to get there.
[6:48] SPEAKER_02: And I think once you're at the top, you just have to be completely insanely obsessively dedicated.
[6:53] SPEAKER_02: I just wonder if some personal factors, maybe a period of time where she's having a bit of a lull in motivation.
[6:59] SPEAKER_02: I I don't know, because I'm with you, Arya.
[7:01] SPEAKER_02: I think that wasn't the Taylor nib that I'm used to seeing.
[7:04] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, to be clear, she only rode 40 or 50 seconds slower than she did last year.
[7:11] SPEAKER_07: Last year she outbiked the field by five minutes.
[7:15] SPEAKER_07: And this year we have some new names in the women's field.
[7:17] SPEAKER_07: We have Kate Waff and Julie Dierren, who rode, you know, one minute and three minutes slower than Taylor, who weren't on the circuit last year.
[7:25] SPEAKER_07: So I think it's a little bit of fresh blood, also bringing the level up.
[7:28] SPEAKER_07: And Jessica Learmouth threw down a 212 just two minutes slower than Taylor Nib on the bike.
[7:34] SPEAKER_07: You know, there was a 214 by Lucy Byrum.
[7:36] SPEAKER_07: So, you know, I'm not I'm not convinced Taylor's sort of lost uh what she had last year at all.
[7:44] SPEAKER_07: You know, she actually ran faster this year, I believe, than last year.
[7:47] SPEAKER_07: So, you know, I think it's a product of the level rising.
[7:52] SPEAKER_07: And I sat with Taylor on the bus to the race, like she was absolutely locked in in a great headspace, taking it as seriously as ever.
[8:01] SPEAKER_07: I don't think we've, you know, seen uh Taylor fade away at all.
[8:06] SPEAKER_07: I think this is just gonna fire her up to continue to get after it and realize the pressure is on.
[8:12] SPEAKER_02: And we've got to talk about Julie Duron, right?
[8:15] SPEAKER_02: Like Taylor still came second, and we're talking about it like she's dropped off a fair bit, except obviously you don't agree with that, Justin.
[8:21] SPEAKER_02: Maybe it's just shout out to Julie Duron.
[8:23] SPEAKER_02: Like Julie Duron looked like she was in great shape at Singapore.
[8:26] SPEAKER_02: I think what happened at Singapore is when you're racing in that kind of heat and humidity, as soon as you go over this point, you just can't get back.
[8:33] SPEAKER_02: And I think she swam right out the front with Jessica Liermonth.
[8:37] SPEAKER_02: And I think I think Julie went over that point at Singapore and therefore on the bike couldn't show her level.
[8:42] SPEAKER_02: But here at San Francisco, I think she was able to show her level that we saw early in the swim at Singapore.
[8:47] SPEAKER_02: So clearly, Julie's just gone to a bit of a new level this year, and that shouldn't surprise us with what we saw out of her last year.
[8:54] SPEAKER_02: And you know, that time at China with with Brett Sutton between Singapore and San Francisco clearly done wonders for Julie because that is as good a performance as we've seen in middle distance racing for a long time in the women's side of things.
[9:07] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, she outran me.
[9:11] SPEAKER_02: Not sure that's saying too much.
[9:13] SPEAKER_02: Fair enough.
[9:15] SPEAKER_02: Any anything else to talk about with the with the women's race at San Francisco?
[9:19] SPEAKER_04: Uh I'll just say one thing.
[9:20] SPEAKER_04: I think it's a combo.
[9:21] SPEAKER_04: I mean, you Iron Man legs, level rises, maybe personal stuff.
[9:25] SPEAKER_04: I mean, it's nothing's ever singular.
[9:27] SPEAKER_04: So, I mean, probably multiple things go into it, and that's what we saw.
[9:30] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, shout out to Julie Duron and her swim's improved a lot too over the last year or two, it seems.
[9:35] SPEAKER_04: So shout out, shout out to her for that.
[9:37] SPEAKER_02: Justin, your headline for the week?
[9:40] SPEAKER_07: My headline is that Rico Bogan dominates the T100 San Francisco men's race in absolutely disgusting fashion, dropping watts and running away with it solo off the front.
[9:52] SPEAKER_07: Um you know, unlike a T100 race I can remember recently, where he just shelled the front group on the bike, he normalized 394 watts for nearly two hours.
[10:04] SPEAKER_07: I believe that's the highest ever recorded power for a middle distance race.
[10:09] SPEAKER_05: You know, we're not gonna be able to fact check that, but Mattis was like 396 last year, supposedly.
[10:16] SPEAKER_07: Okay.
[10:16] SPEAKER_07: So up there with Mattis.
[10:18] SPEAKER_05: But a lot a lot slower.
[10:20] SPEAKER_05: Rico, Rico made the speeds a lot higher, it seemed like.
[10:23] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, it was just incredibly impressive.
[10:25] SPEAKER_07: I didn't basically see him all day, and he just uh, you know, chatting with some of the boys after the race, basically everybody said they had one of the best rides of their career, if not the best, in terms of just strong legs, fresh legs, and group dynamics working, crazy high power numbers across the board, and they still just couldn't believe what Rico was doing on the bike.
[10:47] SPEAKER_07: So yeah, super impressed by him.
[10:49] SPEAKER_05: Well, and then the run off of it too, because he obviously threw down some stupid power at uh Venice 70.3, and then got off and basically got outran by like six, seven minutes by most of the field.
[11:02] SPEAKER_05: Uh so I was most I'm not as surprised about the bike.
[11:06] SPEAKER_05: I mean, for him that was probably the card he knew he had to play, but then yeah, getting off and running basically a minute slower than Yella, uh, who ran.
[11:14] SPEAKER_05: I think him and Jason West were like the two fastest of the day, one of the uh only two uh under an hour.
[11:20] SPEAKER_05: And then Rico was basically faster or just as fast as everybody else.
[11:26] SPEAKER_02: I think there's a there's a couple of things at play here, Ari, with that.
[11:29] SPEAKER_02: The biggest one is 20 meters versus 12 meters.
[11:32] SPEAKER_02: I think this race and Venice show just how big a difference that makes.
[11:37] SPEAKER_02: Now, obviously the courses are different, and this San Francisco bike course is much harder than the Venice bike course, but being able to sit at 12 metres and ride 280 watts and stay four minutes back from Rico Bogan, like you could do and people did at Venice versus this course, where if you wanted to finish four minutes behind him on that bike, what would you have had to have rode?
[11:56] SPEAKER_02: Like 350 watts, maybe?
[11:58] SPEAKER_02: So we're talking like having to hold 70 more watts to stay within the same distance to Rico.
[12:03] SPEAKER_02: So what that does is it means that when everyone gets off the bike, they're so much more dead and have to run so much slower because of it.
[12:11] SPEAKER_02: Whereas, say like um Bitter DOS and Cameron Main at Venice riding behind Rico Bogan, their legs are so fresh that they they can go and bang out 107, 108 half marathons.
[12:21] SPEAKER_02: Whereas because of this 20-meter draft zone, what happens is Yalla and Mika and Kyle and Jason, they run slower off the bike than what they would in an Iron Man 70.3.
[12:32] SPEAKER_02: So it means that Rico's run is probably pretty similar to what it is in Iron Man races, but because everyone else is more tired, it brings them back towards him.
[12:41] SPEAKER_02: So I think we're seeing that these T100 races with the 20-meter draft rule, it means that you don't have to run as well if you are going to go off the front and attack on the bike like Rico does.
[12:52] SPEAKER_05: Well, it's all it's not just 20-meter draft.
[12:54] SPEAKER_05: I mean, it's the the course is crazy.
[12:56] SPEAKER_05: I think 20 meters on a on a course like Venice, you'd have probably a very similar result.
[13:03] SPEAKER_05: People would be a little bit more fatigued coming off the bike, but but still he uh Rico ran a 115 in Venice, which is uh what is that, three like 335 per K?
[13:14] SPEAKER_05: And he ran almost 320.
[13:16] SPEAKER_05: So he he ran a lot faster on more it was you know 372 for uh under two hours in Venice versus here it was three I don't know what his average was, but three ninety-four normalized.
[13:27] SPEAKER_05: Like that's a crazy high-level bike, arguably higher than what he did in Venice, and then almost 15 seconds a K faster on the run.
[13:36] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and maybe maybe there's a factor that um like uh because of the length, like the 80k bike versus the 90k bike.
[13:46] SPEAKER_02: I I know it sounds crazy, but when you're TTing at that higher power, like 370 to 390 watts, maybe just that little bit shorter distance.
[13:54] SPEAKER_02: So instead of 21k, it's 18k, instead of instead of 90k, it's 80k.
[13:59] SPEAKER_02: Maybe that's just a distance that really suit suits Rico as well.
[14:02] SPEAKER_02: And and that little bit of extra time on the bike hurts him, and that three extra K on the run hurts him in 70.3s.
[14:08] SPEAKER_05: It was the same duration though, basically.
[14:10] SPEAKER_05: But I think the hills giving you a chance to stretch out a little bit, go a really, really long way.
[14:15] SPEAKER_05: And also the 14-minute swim, right, Greg?
[14:17] SPEAKER_07: It was a duathlon, so yeah, they dropped us pretty close to the water.
[14:23] SPEAKER_07: The swim was 16 and a half minutes for the Oh, they dropped you close to the water?
[14:26] SPEAKER_06: That's right.
[14:27] SPEAKER_07: I'm sorry, close to the close to the shore.
[14:29] SPEAKER_07: Um, you know, not right next to Alcatraz, like Greg was hoping we would, but it was a fast but hard swim.
[14:36] SPEAKER_07: Everybody was basically together.
[14:37] SPEAKER_07: I don't think it took that much out of anybody, um, unless you were just maybe hanging on for life.
[14:42] SPEAKER_07: But really, the the bike is where the damage was done.
[14:45] SPEAKER_07: And, you know, for some quick numbers, like I know Aaron Royal rode seven minutes slower than Rico Bogan and still normalized about 350 watts.
[14:53] SPEAKER_07: You know, Jamie Riddle just posted his power.
[14:55] SPEAKER_07: He's a small guy who got dropped by Rico and he normalized 358 watts.
[15:00] SPEAKER_07: My experience was 20 meters felt very far.
[15:04] SPEAKER_07: You know, looking at those Race Ranger lights as somebody who's so used to 12 meters in the Iron Man Pro series, 20 meters is, I mean, it's literally almost double.
[15:12] SPEAKER_07: It was it was so much further.
[15:14] SPEAKER_07: And the draft benefit was, I felt hardly there on this course.
[15:18] SPEAKER_07: Um, it was very tough to stay in contact, and 20 meters can really quickly become 30 meters if somebody just puts in a little dig.
[15:25] SPEAKER_07: So man, I loved, loved the distance for the draft or the non-draft race.
[15:30] SPEAKER_07: Um, feel like it was just so much more fair, and I 100% agree with you know both of your statements.
[15:35] SPEAKER_07: Like, yeah, I think Rico wrote a lot better than he ran a lot better than he did in Venice.
[15:39] SPEAKER_07: But Jack's absolutely right that the race just damages people who have any weakness on the bike.
[15:46] SPEAKER_07: You could see it in the results and the gaps off the bike, absolutely.
[15:50] SPEAKER_07: Um, and a lot of that's well, you know, was due to the 20 meters, not just the hills.
[15:54] SPEAKER_07: It's the fact that the groups just don't clump up even on the fast flat sections.
[15:59] SPEAKER_05: Uh, sub-headline to your two headlines, Greg and Justin, is that T100 have the premier product in middle distance triathlon.
[16:08] SPEAKER_05: I just I turned on the broadcast early in the morning uh while I was getting free for my ride, and uh I just I was listening to the commentators and I was like starting to get they would say something, and I would like start to get pissed off and be like, ah, just shut up.
[16:27] SPEAKER_05: And then I I realized like, oh, they're actually saying something insightful, and they're not like advertising some some product.
[16:34] SPEAKER_05: Like, and it was all just like it was great.
[16:37] SPEAKER_05: It was like so good all the way around.
[16:39] SPEAKER_05: Like the coverage was amazing.
[16:40] SPEAKER_05: And I was just watching, I was like, this is a real sporting event that I would show my friends.
[16:45] SPEAKER_05: I would be like, let's watch this thing.
[16:46] SPEAKER_05: Like it's it's not like a piece of crap broadcast.
[16:50] SPEAKER_05: Like, it's really good.
[16:52] SPEAKER_04: Well, Vicky, she does her homework too, and she did a little good segment on you too, Justin, when you were coming in on the bike to run.
[16:59] SPEAKER_04: They kind of talked that dude, they're literally like, this guy works full time.
[17:02] SPEAKER_04: I was like, oh, god damn it, like this guy.
[17:05] SPEAKER_07: Um they didn't just do a LinkedIn reference from Ari, did they?
[17:08] SPEAKER_04: No, you should go back and listen to it.
[17:09] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, what if they called you LinkedIn?
[17:11] SPEAKER_05: You called Justin LinkedIn Reality coming into T2?
[17:14] SPEAKER_05: Oh, that would be awesome.
[17:15] SPEAKER_04: So it was good.
[17:16] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, they do their homework and the the broadcasting is super good.
[17:19] SPEAKER_04: Um, so I I echo your statements on that, Ari.
[17:22] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, that is the bar for a broadcast, right?
[17:24] SPEAKER_07: Like something you would want to tell your non-triathlon friends about is the bar to grow the sport.
[17:28] SPEAKER_07: And I think T100 is doing an amazing job, and it's it's clear they don't take it lightly.
[17:34] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[17:34] SPEAKER_02: Okay, moving on to my headline for the week.
[17:37] SPEAKER_02: It's moving away from T100.
[17:39] SPEAKER_02: Mine is that Kat Matthews versus Laura Phillip is the rivalry in triathlon right now.
[17:45] SPEAKER_02: And I don't know, you boys in America, it's quite hard for you to watch um European Iron Man races.
[17:51] SPEAKER_02: I don't often watch entire Iron Man races.
[17:54] SPEAKER_02: I don't often sit there and watch the full seven, eight, nine hours of coverage.
[17:58] SPEAKER_02: But I did with Iron Man Hamburg on the weekend with Laura Phillips and Cat Matthews.
[18:03] SPEAKER_02: This was for I assume most people haven't watched it the full thing, but this was one of the funnest Iron Man races to sit back and watch.
[18:11] SPEAKER_02: Laura Phillips and Cat Matthews were just in a battle literally all day.
[18:15] SPEAKER_02: So there was a few really interesting and exciting things from this race.
[18:20] SPEAKER_02: In the swim, there was a little front swim group, and Kat Matthews was clearly agitated in the swim.
[18:26] SPEAKER_02: There was a period where it looked to me like she kind of stopped and yelled at Laura Phillip.
[18:31] SPEAKER_02: I don't know if like I'm not saying there was anything untoward going on, but I just think there is there is maybe like uh that good kind of tension that you get with a rivalry between Kat and Laura.
[18:42] SPEAKER_02: Like Laura looked like she was swimming swimming behind Kat, maybe touching Kat's feet.
[18:46] SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
[18:47] SPEAKER_02: Kat was clearly getting frustrated in the swim with the pace of it, would have liked it to be a bit faster from from how it seemed to me.
[18:53] SPEAKER_02: And yeah, it kind of just kind of set the tone for the day.
[18:56] SPEAKER_02: Those two went to battle on the bike all day.
[18:59] SPEAKER_02: Um, they they really were with each other almost until the very end, where Cat got a bit of a gap in the last 20 kilometers into T2.
[19:07] SPEAKER_02: And then the run battle, if you guys haven't, just go back and watch the live broadcast of this and just watch some of the run battle.
[19:13] SPEAKER_02: It was seriously awesome.
[19:15] SPEAKER_02: So from the start, Kat Matthews had about a 30-second gap out of T2, and then from there to like 30k, the gap just floated between like 25 and 45 seconds, and both of them were just hammering.
[19:30] SPEAKER_02: Like Kat was hammering, Laura was hammering.
[19:32] SPEAKER_02: They were running like you know, at patches 230, 235 marathon pace, and it was it was just one of those battles where who's gonna crack first?
[19:42] SPEAKER_02: And it was so like fun to watch because you knew one of them was gonna crack at some point, and neither was giving in.
[19:48] SPEAKER_02: And then finally, at about yeah, 30 to 35k in, Kat Matthews did crack.
[19:54] SPEAKER_02: Laura Phillip got back to her.
[19:55] SPEAKER_02: She was about 40 seconds down, and then in the space of a few kilometers, Laura caught Kat.
[20:00] SPEAKER_02: Laura put in this massive surge past Kat.
[20:02] SPEAKER_02: Cat hung on to her, which was crazy.
[20:05] SPEAKER_02: You'd like you Kat hung on so tough for for much longer than you would think, then kind of got the gap out to 15 seconds and and it held there for a while, and and eventually Laura kind of broke her and ran a 238-27 marathon, and Kat Matthews ran a 240-58.
[20:20] SPEAKER_02: Like for you to ride 422 as a female and then run 240 and come second, it's just it's a crazy, crazy level.
[20:29] SPEAKER_02: And in my mind, Laura Phillip and Kat Matthews are the two um best female Iron Man distance athletes in the world.
[20:36] SPEAKER_02: I think as it stands right now, it's going to be them finishing first and second at Cone, or it's just who who can win it.
[20:41] SPEAKER_02: I think even someone like Taylor Nib is is a fair way behind these two ladies.
[20:45] SPEAKER_02: Like they are just on another level, and this is the rivalry in Triton right now.
[20:50] SPEAKER_05: Mate, uh, that was a great recap.
[20:52] SPEAKER_05: You might have a future in commentary if you keep it up.
[20:58] SPEAKER_05: Like, do I even need to go watch the broadcast?
[21:00] SPEAKER_05: I feel like I got it all.
[21:02] SPEAKER_05: That was that was brilliant.
[21:03] SPEAKER_05: But yeah, I I just checked the tracker, and I mean 238 and 240 is like those are pretty fast runs for guys these days still.
[21:13] SPEAKER_05: Like, so it's yeah, it's a it's a crazy level.
[21:17] SPEAKER_04: Well, 80 803, dude, for the whole race.
[21:20] SPEAKER_04: I mean, remember when they did breaking eight minute like hours in a draft, like they had a T T bikes drafting, like, this is crazy, we're pushing the limits.
[21:28] SPEAKER_04: These girls are out there just doing it already.
[21:30] SPEAKER_04: It's been that's like four years later.
[21:31] SPEAKER_04: So yeah, testament to them.
[21:33] SPEAKER_04: Jack's right, these they're on an another level.
[21:36] SPEAKER_04: And yeah, it's interesting the rivalry because it doesn't seem like they run in the same circles, really.
[21:41] SPEAKER_04: You know, some people are friends, right?
[21:42] SPEAKER_04: And they're like fr they're for they go training camps and stuff, but I don't know if they run in the same circle, so there might be that actual real tension there and a rivalry.
[21:49] SPEAKER_04: And yeah, it's it's good to see.
[21:51] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, and first and second at IMAM World Championships last year.
[21:54] SPEAKER_02: Um, they had that that really good run battle at T one hundred London as well, where they went toe to toe for most of the the 18 kilometer run.
[22:01] SPEAKER_02: Um and and then they've done it again here.
[22:03] SPEAKER_02: So like they're showing that that's three really like big races, as big a race as we as we have in that sport.
[22:10] SPEAKER_02: And these two women have found themselves locking in a head-to-head battle, which I just fully expect to see again in Corona.
[22:15] SPEAKER_02: And I think it's gonna come down to the the run again.
[22:18] SPEAKER_02: Like I I fully expect a run battle between Kat Matthews and Laura Phillip to decide the Iron Man World Championships this n this year and I cannot wait for it.
[22:25] SPEAKER_02: And I think that's a good point you make Greg.
[22:27] SPEAKER_02: I don't think look Cat Matthews is a is a like a cold blooded killer.
[22:32] SPEAKER_02: Everyone thinks Kat's this really nice person and she is outside of triathlon.
[22:37] SPEAKER_02: But Kat is a killer.
[22:38] SPEAKER_02: I I guarantee you I've spent time with Kat I've watched her race enough by now she's a killer.
[22:43] SPEAKER_02: She she she'll do anything to win.
[22:46] SPEAKER_02: And I think Laura Phillips quietly the same Laura Phillips plays this really nice sweet person but she's a killer too.
[22:53] SPEAKER_02: And so I think these two killers are just going to push each other to levels that will will have them quite a bit above every everyone else because I think that's right Greg.
[23:01] SPEAKER_02: I think these two in their own heads know it's uh you know me versus them me like Kat's thinking it's me versus Laura Laura's thinking it's me versus Kat.
[23:09] SPEAKER_05: They both know they're gonna have to throw down at Kona I I think this rivalry will push these girls these women to to levels that we haven't seen so far in women's triform do you not think that uh Annie Howe can uh still enter the chat here like I feel like she had a ton of bad luck uh mechanical bad luck last year in these in the key races and at Roth which maybe she was uh drafting off of some age group men at points a little bit legally but uh beat beat Laura Phillip pretty pretty soundly so I mean do you not see a world where is she just getting dropped on the bike like and she's too far out of it in my opinion Arne's probably getting a little bit older she's not at her best and I think the bike level's gone a bit past her particularly on a course like Kona like I think Arn can run fairly similar to Kat and Laura but I think they've caught her on the run now.
[24:02] SPEAKER_02: I think all three of them are going to be very similar on the run at Kona I just think Arn will be a fair bit back behind those two on on the bike fair this is a like a not an ignorant question but did has Kat raced Kona or did she will she pull out that one?
[24:17] SPEAKER_02: Yeah yeah so she she DNFed um the the last time the women were at Kona uh she you know we've seen what she did at St.
[24:24] SPEAKER_02: George we've seen what she's done at Nice she's uh had two podiums at the Iron Man World Championships but not at Kona yet so I think that's the big question Greg in this rivalry is how will Kat go with the heat at Kona because we know Laura's going to perform there.
[24:36] SPEAKER_02: Laura does well in the heat we know that that's why I think given that Laura's the defending Iron Man World Championship given that she just won at Hamburg which what wasn't super hot um I think Laura's the favourite and so the big question mark is can Kat perform at Kona like she does at Cooler Iron Man?
[24:53] SPEAKER_05: Exciting Ari, your headline My headline is the floodgates are open.
[25:03] SPEAKER_05: That's how I'll phrase it.
[25:04] SPEAKER_05: Earlier this year Trevor Foley posted an Instagram reel with the caption it was him running and his the caption was the year of the sub-230 Iron Man or Sub-230 Ironman marathon.
[25:15] SPEAKER_05: I don't know something something that idea and it's finally happened with a with really not much fanfare at a like a relatively small by sort of Ironman standards race, like no huge names but Manuel Masias dos Santos Jr ran 22650 and it's worth noting he didn't win the race uh Luciano Tacone did but he ran 22650 after losing 16 minutes on the bike to Luciano Tacone uh to finish second.
[25:48] SPEAKER_05: And I it's crazy.
[25:52] SPEAKER_05: Like that is crazy.
[25:54] SPEAKER_05: Like Patrick Lange who is probably the best runner that Iron Man has seen ran 230 flat uh twice and people were kind of looking at him or you know maybe Trevor Foley maybe Christian Blumenfeld uh like who would be the first under 230 and you you think it's gonna be a 229 you know someone's gonna get it barely and then this guy comes out and runs 226 that is crazy.
[26:22] SPEAKER_05: And I I want to say this very gingerly but it is the best marathon we have seen since Tomas Rodriguez.
[26:35] SPEAKER_07: Yeah I mean didn't you just race him in Chattanooga Ari or am I thinking Oh yes that was two weeks ago he ran 1130.
[26:42] SPEAKER_07: So you outran this guy by over two minutes two weeks ago.
[26:46] SPEAKER_05: No no by just like a minute or less than a minute.
[26:48] SPEAKER_05: Oh minute is I mean he ran he ran faster today average pace than at Chattanooga but uh I assume he had Iron Man legs.
[26:56] SPEAKER_02: Yeah well there's a famous saying in the running world that if you run a good half marathon in the month before a marathon then you're not in marathon shape.
[27:03] SPEAKER_02: So it kind of in the running world running fast half marathons doesn't really convert to running fast marathons.
[27:10] SPEAKER_02: So we're not kind of used to that that rule that rule or that saying in in trython but it is crazy that he ran 113 in Chatty and then a couple of weeks later runs 226 in the marathon off 180k so it's it's super impressive.
[27:23] SPEAKER_04: Yeah good for second good for second I I wasn't that surprised before the two weeks ago I was like alright like watch out for this kid and you know it was only three months ago he's racing Abu Dhabi and he comes in off the chase pack and he ran like 12 seconds slower than Hayden Wilde and Matt Hauser for like 14th.
[27:43] SPEAKER_04: So this guy is that class like he is the class that is above most of the rest of the field.
[27:50] SPEAKER_04: So yeah good on him.
[27:51] SPEAKER_04: It looks like he did some work on the bike too Iron Man debut.
[27:55] SPEAKER_04: Yeah Iron Man debut and like home dude I feel like Brazilians they go to Brazil and they race and they just go lights out.
[28:01] SPEAKER_04: Like he you know you get a Brazilian in a World Cup race they just like they always win and perform well in their home country it seems like too so yeah crazy crazy race.
[28:11] SPEAKER_05: I'm excited to watch him in Kona or Nice yeah is there any question marks over the course I haven't looked too much into it is the course legitim there were two Strava files we found one was twenty six point one miles one was one was was it point seven twenty five but but his time on Strava it was listed as two forty two and on the tracker it was listed as two thirty seven so it's like it maybe he left his watch running or like I I don't know.
[28:41] SPEAKER_04: Yeah it wasn't a mile short it was potentially a minute or something but it's it's pretty legit.
[28:46] SPEAKER_02: Wow if it's only a minute or so short then that is legit.
[28:49] SPEAKER_05: It could be I mean if it's 25 point eight I think if I remember I think it was not 25.7 I think it was 25.8 on that one strobophile.
[28:57] SPEAKER_05: I forget whose it was that's like two that's two minutes at the pace he was running two two and more like two oh five two ten.
[29:05] SPEAKER_05: So like really closer to two minutes uh at the pace he was running so like even if it's you know that that short it's still we're talking about a 228 high two twenty nine low yeah running a 226 kind of takes the doubters it kind of silences the doubters of saying oh the course was a little short it's like yeah no that's me you know maybe a minute or two and that's still sub 230 so yeah unlikely that it's like four or five minutes short crazy.
[29:30] SPEAKER_07: Nah it didn't say I think that's just the new level like that we're just seeing with Kat and Laura the level they're taking it to 238 and then we've seen this 226 uh yeah we're gonna see a lot more of it yeah what I will say about it is you know he he was outridden on the bike by what over 10 minutes by a guy 16 yeah but oh by 16 minutes by Luciano so and that's a guy that doesn't ride at the front of a competitive deep race on the bike and so I do wonder you know when when we're talking about sub 230 for a Christian or a Patrick at a world championship or Trevor Foley at a Lake Placid we're talking about a dramatically different effort on the bike.
[30:10] SPEAKER_07: Not to invalidate that somebody did finally run under 230 but attempting to do that while riding 300 watts for an Iron Man is going to be a lot different than my assumption of riding you know somewhere between 30 and 70 watts easier than that.
[30:28] SPEAKER_02: You're absolutely right Justin it's such a different thing doing this at the front of an Iron Man world championships or at the front of even an Iron Man hamburg like Kat and Laura did than just a pro series race.
[30:39] SPEAKER_02: Even a pro series race like go and try and do this at Lake Placid or Texas.
[30:43] SPEAKER_02: It's it's a different thing if you want to win the race.
[30:45] SPEAKER_02: So it's awesome that he ran 226.
[30:47] SPEAKER_02: I love seeing the level rise but he didn't win the race and I I do think that's what gets lost in it.
[30:51] SPEAKER_02: This is triathlon not not a marathon so yeah you're a hundred percent right Justin um different things.
[30:57] SPEAKER_02: Alright that's the the most serious part of the show done well or is it you could actually argue this next next segment's going to be the most serious it's time for enemy of the show after popular demand from last week it's back.
[31:10] SPEAKER_02: We've got some updates from our enemies of the show nomination last week.
[31:14] SPEAKER_02: Obviously Greg nominated Sam Long to be enemy of the show last week because he DM'd him uh or text messaged him and Sam Long didn't reply to him he snobbed him and then we found out during the week that Sam Long had actually snobbed another host of this show Justin Riale so Justin Riale being the nice guy he is he sent Sam Long a message he kind of said hey Sam how you going mate hope you're well I'm racing you know T100 San Francisco this week bummed that you're not going to be racing any tips for me on the course?
[31:45] SPEAKER_02: Nothing.
[31:46] SPEAKER_07: He got back to me on Thursday.
[31:49] SPEAKER_07: He got back to me on Thursday Jack so five days later but I was already in San Francisco he told me he ran too big of a chainring but I'm guessing you've already ridden the course so props to Sam he did get in touch with me this is the point Justin didn't have any helpful tips.
[32:05] SPEAKER_02: Wait let me check my text oh wait um no it doesn't look like he's gotten back to me yet that's unfortunate here's the point Justin I know why he replied to you because after finding out that he hadn't replied to you or Greg I thought well does he hate the show maybe he agrees that he is enemy of the show so I sent him a message and I said hey Sam how's it going?
[32:25] SPEAKER_02: And do you know how long it took him to reply 10 seconds 17 seconds from when I sent the message to and he replied 17 seconds to the same number that Justin and Greg reply uh had sent the message to and so I I said to him I said Sam what's going on here you've been nominated as enemy of the show and you're acting like an enemy of the show you haven't replied to my boy Justin you haven't replied to Greg and he goes oh yeah let me fix it and so then he replies to Justin but he still didn't reply to Greg I texted him too and did he reply?
[33:02] SPEAKER_05: Let's put it out there the the next day.
[33:06] SPEAKER_07: Yeah that's still more replies oh that's that's faster than Ari replies I either reply in five minutes or I don't reply at all.
[33:15] SPEAKER_04: So maybe maybe Sam just enemy of Greg Harper not of the show yeah I think so it hurts deep we did there was some chatting on the T100 YouTube chat before the race Jack you were in there I was in there Sam did acknowledge me one time and then immediately I called him he didn't obviously he didn't answer but you know maybe we're mending the fences who knows all right and uh we've we've all brought a new enemy of the show nomination.
[33:43] SPEAKER_02: Well you can go with the same one as you did last week but we are all going to put another nomination forward for for this week's episode.
[33:49] SPEAKER_07: So Justin let's start with you well I'll start by just extending the thread on Nate Newton former enemy of the show but proclaimed friend of the show he uh commented on my latest YouTube video and another inspirational quote.
[34:05] SPEAKER_07: I actually really liked this one and thought it was worth sharing.
[34:08] SPEAKER_07: If you find yourself in a room where you feel like you do not belong, you are in the right room.
[34:13] SPEAKER_07: Nate Newton, parentheses friend of the show slash just in reality accountability coach.
[34:20] SPEAKER_07: So he is now a self-proclaimed accountability coach of mine through the YouTube comments.
[34:26] SPEAKER_05: We still don't know who this mysterious man is but I actually really liked that dude I I went to his uh I went to I clicked on his YouTube channel and it it was like the account was created like the day before oh that's funny.
[34:39] SPEAKER_05: Yeah it was like he created it to comment on because it was on Instagram right that he was commenting on stuff?
[34:44] SPEAKER_05: No YouTube.
[34:46] SPEAKER_05: Oh weird yeah because I I saw I went to the account and it was created very recently interesting.
[34:52] SPEAKER_05: Maybe I'm mixing up March and May 2025.
[34:55] SPEAKER_05: It wasn't that it wasn't a very old account.
[34:57] SPEAKER_05: And it seemed like the plot thickens this is amazing actually I might have to go back and double check.
[35:01] SPEAKER_05: I may have misspoken but I looked at and I was like oh he just made this account.
[35:05] SPEAKER_07: But no shout out Nate I mean I was literally on the boat heading to the frickin' island like looking around at the guy sitting next to me thinking about this quote so there's something here.
[35:15] SPEAKER_07: There's something here moving from enemy to friend.
[35:17] SPEAKER_07: So my new enemy of the show a USA Olympian and now friend but a little bit of an enemy Morgan Pearson just raced his first T100 San Francisco race.
[35:28] SPEAKER_07: I had the chance to get to know the guy nice guy absolute legend cheering for him in Paris he's a newer American on the long course scene one of the best runners in the sport one on one half marathon guy.
[35:37] SPEAKER_07: I thought I was having a pretty good race yesterday.
[35:40] SPEAKER_07: I was on my run executed a really really good bike running sub six minute pace you know just really confident having a good time Morgan Pearson runs by me literally made me feel like I was on a Sunday stroll like I was running nine minutes per mile that man humbled me and his run form he looks like a gazelle to the point where when I finished instead of my parents you know talking about how great of a race I had they said did you see that guy running?
[36:11] SPEAKER_07: Oh my god he looked so good and I was like hey I look pretty good too guys so Morgan's currently my enemy but in a way you know motivated by somebody who's just that much better than you in one of the disciplines that's a beautiful thing about Trouton everybody has a weakness and you can look up to the top guys in that sport.
[36:29] SPEAKER_07: So Morgan's the enemy of the week for me.
[36:31] SPEAKER_06: Honest sounds like you have a man crusher a lame enemy of the show.
[36:35] SPEAKER_07: Doesn't sound like I don't know you and Morgan could have a little run rivalry Aria I could see that.
[36:39] SPEAKER_05: No me and Morgan I mean he could be my enemy of the show nomination too because we go we got beef from way back way back.
[36:48] SPEAKER_05: Yeah I mean he's not my enemy of the show nomination.
[36:51] SPEAKER_04: Oh dude yeah he was like oh you two generation that whole thing you would have been following that girl yeah of course I was I'm an Aria Cloud diehard since day one.
[37:00] SPEAKER_05: Speaking of Ari, who's your nomination for for enemy of the show well I was going to renominate Sam Long or I guess it's not a renomination for me but I was going to second Greg's nomination because he did text me back but then he didn't want to train with me.
[37:15] SPEAKER_05: I was in Tucson and uh he was doing a brick on Wednesday and like he coaches himself and I was like so you know why don't we just maybe move your brick to Thursday and we can do it together.
[37:24] SPEAKER_05: And then he just didn't respond.
[37:26] SPEAKER_05: But that one was also lame new enemy of the show Cam Werf.
[37:30] SPEAKER_05: Can't tell if it was random or it was staged but just no love for me on the on the audio that we started the show with.
[37:39] SPEAKER_05: I mean he he it's intentional in some way.
[37:43] SPEAKER_05: Either Jack, you said hey Cam, send in some audio say some nice things about Justin, say some nice things about Greg, say some nice things about me and just don't even mention Ari.
[37:52] SPEAKER_05: It's going to fuck him up or he just did it intentionally because like he's got something against me.
[37:58] SPEAKER_05: But either way that's my enemy of the show nomination you guys will probably fucking upgrade him to friend of the show joining Nate Newton but I don't care that's my nomination.
[38:09] SPEAKER_02: It wasn't planned.
[38:09] SPEAKER_02: It wasn't planned at all it randomly I get email notifications every time anyone sends in those voice messages and it says the email and it was Cam's worst email and I was like oh what's this?
[38:17] SPEAKER_02: I think he just forgot that you're on the show.
[38:19] SPEAKER_05: Like he he's a no way I talk so much oh well you brought it to the table Ari.
[38:26] SPEAKER_07: No Cam's a great Cam's a good good guy.
[38:28] SPEAKER_07: I mean I loved chatting with him in St.
[38:30] SPEAKER_07: George definitely friend of the show what do you think Greg?
[38:33] SPEAKER_02: Yeah for sure if he's an enemy of Ari he's a friend of me yeah I think we do it Ari brought it brought it to the agenda let's do a little group vote.
[38:41] SPEAKER_02: So uh Greg Cam Wirth friend or enemy of the show?
[38:44] SPEAKER_02: Friend Justin friend friend so we've now got two official friends of the show by majority vote Nate Newton and Cam Worth.
[38:53] SPEAKER_04: Gotcha Greg, who's your enemy of the show nomination Alright so this guy disrespected the ethos and the history of triathlon by dropping off the athletes in the middle of the ocean nowhere near Alcatraz my enemy show is the boat driver of the boat who dropped off the athletes in the T100 race.
[39:17] SPEAKER_04: That's my enemy of the show anyway so let's give a history lesson.
[39:24] SPEAKER_04: First first first escape from Alcatraz they take the athletes all the way to the island you have to jump off the boat swim to a tiny beach on Alcatraz they didn't allow wetsuits and then you swam to shore that's the history of this race that's what this race should be about and uh yeah so that boat driver man you should hire a PI and like figure out who it is not stalking the boat drama you know what's funny about it too Greg we got on the boat at 5 a.m they drove us all the way around Alcatraz on the backside like around the island they pulled up right next to it and I thought oh Greg would love this they're gonna drop us off next to the island and we're sitting there we're all putting our wetsuits on they like turn the motor back on and drive all the way to I was like why did we just drive all the way around the island like for the photos and so it's a little frustrating for sure especially when you have some of the world's best swimmers in triathlon all on the boat wearing wetsuits.
[40:27] SPEAKER_07: Like obviously we could have done the long swim but yeah I wasn't driving the boat.
[40:33] SPEAKER_04: Yeah and maybe it would be a little bit longer than 2K but it probably would have been 23 to 27 minutes which is the same time frame that the swims are normally to.
[40:43] SPEAKER_04: And they don't they always just talk about iconic course like this iconic race I'm like you didn't even do it like stop look that's like just clickbait man it just it pisses me off so much honestly I'm just gonna stop talking about it.
[40:56] SPEAKER_07: Yeah we were 54 seconds per 100 yard pace average with the current so it's certainly current assisted and just super fast and the whole group stayed together.
[41:07] SPEAKER_02: Greg do you think that your anger might be a little misdirected here like do you think your real enemy of the show is Sam Reno probably not the boat driver that's hired like I don't think that boat driver's the enemy Jack I think you bring a good point that I thought of myself but um yeah no comment on that no comment on that the boat driver's my official enemy I just love to see Greg like I wish Greg was on in this race just like in the boat just yelling like hijacked it.
[41:37] SPEAKER_02: It's America next year in San Francisco next year in San Francisco we see a camera pre-race and we just see Greg driving the boat and he's like he's gone to the boat driver's house in the morning he's whacked him and he's wearing like a balcot lava driving the boat and he drives it out to out to the prison and just refuses to go anywhere else.
[41:58] SPEAKER_02: It's not bad.
[42:01] SPEAKER_05: Oh that'd be so good.
[42:03] SPEAKER_02: Alright I got to bring my nomination um I've just brought some audio to the show.
[42:08] SPEAKER_02: Again this audio came as a surprise to me during the week so let's just sit back and have a listen to this.
[42:15] SPEAKER_00: Hey Jack Bob Babbitt here.
[42:17] SPEAKER_00: Hey don't believe in enemies I love what you do I love your show I love the fact that you support the greatest athletes in the world and the greatest sport.
[42:28] SPEAKER_00: Keep doing what you're doing and uh I don't want to be on your enemy list.
[42:33] SPEAKER_00: There's no such thing as enemies in our sport.
[42:35] SPEAKER_00: We want to grow it together.
[42:37] SPEAKER_00: Thanks buddy keep doing what you're doing.
[42:39] SPEAKER_02: Bye bullshit Bob you're you're listening you've just told me you listen to this show every week listen closely my friend oh no and I say that sarcastically because we are not friends Bob you are our enemy no matter how nice you try and be no matter how much you try and fool everyone with this nice guy act we're not buying it you try so hard to bring positivity friendship support encouragement to this sport we do not want it Bob if you see me in an elevator again this year Bob you look the other way don't speak to me don't ask me how my mum and dad are don't ask me how my life's going how my flight was don't say a word to me my nomination for enemy of the show for two weeks in a row is Bob Babbitt.
[43:40] SPEAKER_07: We are coming for you Bob I don't know what do you guys think of this one Ari and Greg I don't know if I'm coming for Bob that's a little weird easy so you know what's funny Jack uh I love Bob I was on his show at Oceanside great mate always supportive But you know what's funny?
[44:01] SPEAKER_07: He's so likable and talkative that my dad got stuck chatting with him yesterday over a coffee in the VIP booth and missed the whole swim exit because he was in a deep conversation with Bob Babbitt, and my wife and mom couldn't get him away.
[44:16] SPEAKER_05: So enemy of the show for sure.
[44:18] SPEAKER_07: Bob, so nice, but you prevented my dad from seeing the swim, which is really my dad's fault.
[44:22] SPEAKER_07: Because he's tight.
[44:24] SPEAKER_02: Bob Babbitt kidnaps and stops parents from watching son succeed.
[44:32] SPEAKER_02: We gotta stop him.
[44:33] SPEAKER_02: Someone has to stop this man.
[44:35] SPEAKER_02: He's a danger to society.
[44:39] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, right after he hosts the Challenge Athletes fundraiser, raising millions for those who need support in the sport.
[44:47] SPEAKER_02: Oh, this is just this, it just annoys me so much.
[44:51] SPEAKER_02: Millions raised for the underprivileged, nice to everyone, no one dislikes him.
[44:56] SPEAKER_02: It just rubs me the wrong way.
[44:58] SPEAKER_06: It's gotta be a front, right?
[44:59] SPEAKER_06: It's a front, he's a criminal.
[45:01] SPEAKER_06: It's like Gustavo Fring.
[45:04] SPEAKER_02: Exactly.
[45:05] SPEAKER_02: Bob Babbitt leading a double life.
[45:07] SPEAKER_02: What are you really up to, Bob?
[45:08] SPEAKER_02: We're on to you.
[45:13] SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
[45:13] SPEAKER_07: I think this one's heading for a friend of the show nomination pretty soon.
[45:16] SPEAKER_07: No, no, no, no.
[45:18] SPEAKER_07: Another week.
[45:19] SPEAKER_04: No, I don't think so.
[45:20] SPEAKER_04: I think, yeah, you there's some questions to be asked and answered here.
[45:23] SPEAKER_04: Nobody's that nice.
[45:24] SPEAKER_04: That's a really good point, Jeff.
[45:26] SPEAKER_02: For 50 years, Bob's been in this sport and he's thought he's got a he's thinking to himself, I've gotten away with this.
[45:32] SPEAKER_02: No one's no one's doubting any of this.
[45:34] SPEAKER_02: It's working.
[45:35] SPEAKER_02: Bob, your time's coming to an end.
[45:38] SPEAKER_02: We are on to you.
[45:40] SPEAKER_02: Okay.
[45:45] SPEAKER_02: All right.
[45:46] SPEAKER_02: Uh, we've got another new segment for the show this week.
[45:49] SPEAKER_02: Uh, it was actually brought about by a message that me and Ari had during the week where we kind of were comparing some things in triathlon to like the crazy uh relationship that you had with your ex that was up and down, and you kept going back to it because the highs were so high, and then you kept running away from it because the lows were so low.
[46:07] SPEAKER_02: And we thought, well, why don't each of us bring an example of what one of those might be?
[46:12] SPEAKER_02: So, like something in triathlon might be your training, it might be in the sport of triathlon, where it kind of reminds you like of a crazy relationship you had in the past, and then also brings something that reminds you of a really strong, stable, healthy relationship where it's just reliable and it never lets you down.
[46:29] SPEAKER_02: Um, I'll start us.
[46:30] SPEAKER_02: So, my crazy relationship comparison is saunas after training sessions.
[46:38] SPEAKER_02: Now, everyone talks about how great sauntering is for you.
[46:42] SPEAKER_02: You know, we know about all the heat benefits, the uh the increase in blood, blood, blood fluid levels, blood plasma levels, the hemoglobin increases.
[46:50] SPEAKER_02: We know that it can help you get prepared for hotter races, but also just just make you fitter.
[46:55] SPEAKER_02: The thing with saunas is I did one the other day after a run, and it was 112 degrees Celsius, and I tried to stay in there for as long as I could, which was about 25 minutes.
[47:04] SPEAKER_02: And I couldn't sleep that night.
[47:06] SPEAKER_02: I was like borderline sick for three days.
[47:08] SPEAKER_02: It just absolutely destroyed me.
[47:11] SPEAKER_05: 112 is no saunas don't get that hot.
[47:14] SPEAKER_05: It did.
[47:15] SPEAKER_02: I you would die.
[47:16] SPEAKER_02: The sauna that I've usually go to is sits between about 90 and 100 on the scale.
[47:20] SPEAKER_02: Now, maybe that maybe its measurement is a little wrong, but I walked into it.
[47:25] SPEAKER_02: It's very hot, it's hotter than any sauna I've ever done.
[47:28] SPEAKER_02: And we know that saunas regularly are between 90 and 100.
[47:31] SPEAKER_02: It's a traditional sauna, not an infrared one, so obviously a bit hotter.
[47:34] SPEAKER_02: Um, and this on that exact same scale, which even if not exactly right, is relative to that sauna, was 112 this week, and it was by far the hottest I've ever been in.
[47:43] SPEAKER_02: Like I did heaps of Austrian saunas with Fred, and he was telling me how they're the hottest in the world.
[47:48] SPEAKER_02: This made those feel cold.
[47:49] SPEAKER_02: It was brutal.
[47:50] SPEAKER_02: And so I do think there's this thing with heat training, but particularly saunas, where if you push the limits a little bit too much, have it too hot, stay in there for too long, the the downside of it just hugely outweighs the benefit of it.
[48:03] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I a hundred percent agree, Jack.
[48:05] SPEAKER_07: Saunas are are another crazy X of mine.
[48:08] SPEAKER_07: I have tried to do post-run saunas at the gym.
[48:12] SPEAKER_07: Um, and it's a nice sauna, traditional sauna.
[48:14] SPEAKER_07: Definitely not quite that hot, maybe 180 degrees Fahrenheit.
[48:18] SPEAKER_07: Someone can convert that to Celsius.
[48:22] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, they I find that they they just shell me.
[48:25] SPEAKER_07: I mean, they they're the fatigue equivalent to for me as an individual of like a three-hour hard ride or like 10 by 1k at threshold.
[48:36] SPEAKER_07: And if you just throw that in there during a hard training week, um, yeah, it's it can be super fatiguing, and it also messes with my sleep and dehydration, and it also has caused me to get sick.
[48:48] SPEAKER_07: I don't know if that's just because I don't wear sandals in there and there's like seven sweaty dudes all over each other in the public gym sauna.
[48:54] SPEAKER_02: Just like Were you naked in the sauna, Justin?
[48:57] SPEAKER_07: Uh well, I mean everyone's wearing a towel.
[49:01] SPEAKER_07: But yeah, it's like a nose close, no clothes allowed type sauna in the gym bathroom where you know, bunch of dudes in there, and then you know, one guy starts talking, and you're like, just shut up.
[49:13] SPEAKER_07: Like, no one wants to be this bad.
[49:15] SPEAKER_05: I've thought about saying that so many times to the random guy that just starts saying shit.
[49:20] SPEAKER_02: And my stable is commute, like my healthy, stable, strong relationship is communication with your coach.
[49:26] SPEAKER_02: What's if you have a coach, communicate with them.
[49:30] SPEAKER_02: I think that I think that how communication should work with your coach is you should be trying to make your coach feel like they are you.
[49:37] SPEAKER_02: Like everything you know about you, they know.
[49:41] SPEAKER_02: Not just with your training, with everything.
[49:43] SPEAKER_02: And it shouldn't be delayed.
[49:44] SPEAKER_02: Like so many times people have little niggles, and as a coach, you don't realize how serious it is, and then a week later they're like, oh, I can't run, I've got a stress fracture.
[49:52] SPEAKER_02: And you're like, well, this would have been nice to know a week ago when I've set you 80k of running for the last seven days, or maybe you know, you're having a bad like speaking of relationships, maybe you're having a fight with your boyfriend or girlfriend.
[50:04] SPEAKER_02: I think letting your coach know that kind of stuff so that they can help adjust your training to what's going on in your life, your work, your relationship, your friendships, how your mental health is, how your physical health is.
[50:15] SPEAKER_02: And the more you can communicate, the better.
[50:17] SPEAKER_02: No good coach wants less communication.
[50:20] SPEAKER_02: It's never a good thing to go and talk less to your coach.
[50:23] SPEAKER_02: If your coach is good, they want you to message them as much as you can, call them as much as you can.
[50:28] SPEAKER_02: They just want to feel like they are you.
[50:29] SPEAKER_02: And so for me, strong, frequent communication with your coach is the equivalent of a stable, healthy relationship.
[50:37] SPEAKER_05: God, it is just so funny that I ran 80k and my hip hurts, and I can't run now and I'm in a fight with my girlfriend.
[50:46] SPEAKER_05: Wait, you guys are in a fight?
[50:47] SPEAKER_05: I mean, I was just joking around.
[50:49] SPEAKER_05: I I can't, I can't run though.
[50:51] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean, I agree, Jock.
[50:52] SPEAKER_07: I think it's it's critical.
[50:54] SPEAKER_07: Run very far away if you're listening to this podcast and your coach has you on some kind of payment plan that is like, yeah, we can have one 10-minute call per week, and I'll send you four text messages, and that's the silver tier.
[51:04] SPEAKER_07: If you want to move to a gold tier, you can pay another$100 and that'll bump you to 10 text messages a week and two calls.
[51:11] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, that's if you're if you pay for coaching and your coach limits communication, like if they say you get one call a week or one call a fortnight or one call a month, fire that coach.
[51:20] SPEAKER_02: Fire them right now on the spot.
[51:22] SPEAKER_02: Even if you're only paying 50 bucks a week, fire that coach.
[51:24] SPEAKER_02: That's a lazy coach who's taking money from you and wants nothing to do with you.
[51:28] SPEAKER_02: A coach like that, you can almost guarantee is copy and pasting stuff.
[51:32] SPEAKER_02: Like that is just a good coach, no matter how much you're paying them, wants as much communication as possible.
[51:37] SPEAKER_02: Uh, Greg, what are your crazy and healthy relationships?
[51:41] SPEAKER_04: All right, well, my crazy one is, you know, I had something different, but this one actually hits home a little bit more.
[51:47] SPEAKER_04: And it's uh it goes back to last year when I was self-coaching, and it's um taking training advice from Lionel.
[51:54] SPEAKER_04: That's my crazy ex-girlfriend because those highs are high, but man, those lows can be lows too.
[51:59] SPEAKER_04: So honestly, man, like the roller coaster is real.
[52:02] SPEAKER_07: And uh, you're really you're really saying Lionel's YouTube channel, right?
[52:06] SPEAKER_04: Not no, not actual.
[52:08] SPEAKER_04: I don't know Lionel personally at all, but taking advice from his yeah, social media, which is obviously we should get training advice from.
[52:14] SPEAKER_04: So that's my crazy ex-girlfriend uh training.
[52:18] SPEAKER_07: Okay, what's one piece of advice you took from Lionel's YouTube training that didn't work out for you, or at worst, put you in a really bad spot?
[52:27] SPEAKER_04: Um, I can't think of one off the top of my head, to be honest, but I think just the general um theme of it all, where you're like you're s constantly second guessing what you're doing, is like the that's the cra that's that's the low low.
[52:41] SPEAKER_04: Um I think it's more that.
[52:43] SPEAKER_04: But it you know, no dig at lionel.
[52:45] SPEAKER_04: We all we all get there.
[52:47] SPEAKER_04: My my stable, my stable is the pool.
[52:51] SPEAKER_04: The pool grounds me, the pool is calm, the pool is safe, and there's no other distractions, and that's my happy place.
[52:59] SPEAKER_04: So yeah.
[52:59] SPEAKER_04: And the pool is closed for water aerobics.
[53:02] SPEAKER_04: And I just join the session and I get my pool session in.
[53:06] SPEAKER_02: Greg, I have a question about this.
[53:07] SPEAKER_02: Uh if you're a triathlete, what percentage of your swimming do you think is good to do in the open water?
[53:13] SPEAKER_04: Zero.
[53:14] SPEAKER_02: And why is that?
[53:16] SPEAKER_04: Well, if you're scared of the open water, you should practice.
[53:19] SPEAKER_04: But the open water, I think, just makes you a little bit slow.
[53:22] SPEAKER_04: Like if you're gonna swim open water, you need structure and you need speed.
[53:25] SPEAKER_04: I think you build skills in the pool to take to the open water, and I think majority of people should be doing their swimming in a pool in a structured, well-rounded program.
[53:35] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, but that's a classic Greg take, like zero, right?
[53:38] SPEAKER_07: Like you have to take a hard, you have to take a hard stance on a soft topic.
[53:42] SPEAKER_07: You know me, that's what I do.
[53:44] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, like I'll be the realist here.
[53:46] SPEAKER_07: Like, five percent is my answer.
[53:48] SPEAKER_07: Like, you should do all of your actual training in the pool, but one open water swim before your first race of the season, or one open water swim in the fall before your sort of A race or championship race certainly is not going to make you slower.
[54:04] SPEAKER_07: It'll make you comfortable with a wetsuit in a newer body position.
[54:08] SPEAKER_07: It'll remind you how to sight and look at buoys and keep your head up.
[54:12] SPEAKER_07: Like, those are hard.
[54:13] SPEAKER_04: Just put the wetsuit on your kitchen, see if it fits.
[54:16] SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
[54:17] SPEAKER_04: Like, are you the fastest swimmer in triathlon?
[54:19] SPEAKER_04: Like, were you coached by Olympic coaches last?
[54:21] SPEAKER_04: Like I was, but like whatever, no big deal.
[54:24] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I think you're jaded by that perspective at times, though, Greg.
[54:28] SPEAKER_07: Like you come from such a strong background.
[54:30] SPEAKER_07: Like, you know, if you're gonna give advice to 45-minute 70.3 swimmers, like they're not you.
[54:36] SPEAKER_07: Like, I don't think you need open water at all.
[54:38] SPEAKER_07: I don't think I need much of it.
[54:40] SPEAKER_07: But I've got friends that have had like it's how many panic, how many panic attacks do you see in every 70.3 age group swim?
[54:46] SPEAKER_07: It's not a small number, and I don't think those people have enough experience in the open water.
[54:51] SPEAKER_05: Well, like he said, if you're scared of the open water, you should do it.
[54:54] SPEAKER_05: Also, this has nothing to do with what we're talking about, but I gotta say it.
[54:58] SPEAKER_05: Justin, your camera quality went up like 200%, and your skin is looking so crisp.
[55:04] SPEAKER_05: You got a nice little tan.
[55:06] SPEAKER_05: It's from all the open water cement.
[55:08] SPEAKER_05: You know, nice and toughed up, like, oh my god, I just can't stop looking at you.
[55:12] SPEAKER_02: I was laughing all the way throughout that because you guys can't see this at home.
[55:16] SPEAKER_02: But every single word that Justin said there, Greg was shaking his head.
[55:21] SPEAKER_02: The entire time Justin was speaking, Greg was shaking his head.
[55:25] SPEAKER_02: Couldn't stop laughing.
[55:27] SPEAKER_07: Uh dare could you go against my perspective on the on swimming?
[55:31] SPEAKER_02: Sam Long, if you're if you're listening, which I know you do, you told me during the week that you heard our episode.
[55:37] SPEAKER_02: If you liked what Greg said, you can reply to his text message and he'll help you.
[55:41] SPEAKER_02: But if you liked what Justin said, reply to him and he'll help you.
[55:44] SPEAKER_02: Okay, uh Justin, let's move on to yours.
[55:47] SPEAKER_07: All right, my crazy X is just losing one to two kilos, or just lose three pounds.
[55:54] SPEAKER_07: Like, for me, I think of myself as a heavier triathlete.
[55:59] SPEAKER_07: Which is, I don't know, kind of interesting and maybe a bit silly, but I'm five foot nine inches, 162 pounds.
[56:07] SPEAKER_07: I fluctuated between 160 and 165 typically.
[56:11] SPEAKER_07: But in college I used to be 185 and lift weights and kind of chubby and drank too much beer.
[56:16] SPEAKER_07: And now I feel, you know, quite fit, but that's my weight.
[56:19] SPEAKER_07: And, you know, there's a lot of old school coaches and a lot of different body types in the sport, but as someone who's tried to get a bit better at running, uh, you know, you think, oh, if I just lost three pounds, I'd be 10 seconds per mile faster threshold.
[56:33] SPEAKER_07: Or I'd be running 116 instead of 117.
[56:35] SPEAKER_07: Let me just let me just eat a little less.
[56:38] SPEAKER_07: Um, and that has just been my detriment.
[56:42] SPEAKER_07: It's led to, I think, some injuries.
[56:44] SPEAKER_07: And I've never lost like 10 pounds, I've never had any eating issues, but just the idea of even trying to lose a pound or two, I've found can be like a crippling thought and really compromise my ability to train well and get stronger, which are both much more important than trying to lose a pound or two to get to get fast.
[57:01] SPEAKER_07: Um, so that's my crazy X.
[57:04] SPEAKER_04: Dude, that I've been there too, and I think this is like so applicable to pros and age groupers and in general.
[57:10] SPEAKER_04: And it's like it's you even learn the lesson, and then you can still fall back into the same ways where you're like, oh, like, eh, and then and then you know, maybe when you're eating something, like, oh, I just won't, I won't stuff myself or something like that.
[57:22] SPEAKER_04: You know, it can be it can be tough.
[57:24] SPEAKER_04: So I think we're all there, and you know, it's something we should all talk about, and you should always talk about with your coach and your friends and stuff, and make sure you're feeling your body correctly and and well, because that's really what like Justin said, if you want to not be injured, that's the most important thing, not you know, whether you're 5'9 and 158 or 5'9 and 161, because in the end, it doesn't really matter because you on the bike, like it the it's such a small percent, like it just it doesn't matter at all.
[57:50] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, it's one water bottle like of weight, right?
[57:53] SPEAKER_07: It's one water bottle of weight, and it's like it's kind of silly.
[57:56] SPEAKER_07: And there's guys, I just remind myself I look at Christian Blumentfelder Matthew Marquot who are stronger and faster than me, and they're big dudes and they're super strong.
[58:03] SPEAKER_07: And Rico Bogan, like big giant dude putting on 394 watts, like just get stronger, don't lose weight.
[58:10] SPEAKER_07: Stable relationship is going to be a just a classic workout that I go to two and one week out from race day, which is four times 15 minutes with five minutes rest on the TT bike in Arrow at race effort.
[58:23] SPEAKER_07: Uh, I'll typically do four times 15 minutes, two weeks out from a 70.3, and then if I've been doing a solid build one week out, I'll drop that down to four times 10 minutes at race effort.
[58:32] SPEAKER_07: And this is not race uh power, uh, it's purely race effort.
[58:37] SPEAKER_07: And typically those numbers are lower than what I would see on race day because I'm in a hole and I haven't quite tapered yet.
[58:42] SPEAKER_07: But man, those are just reliable sessions where I can mentally lock in, and uh it's worked pretty well for me heading into Oceanside and San Francisco where I feel really sharp and fresh on race day.
[58:52] SPEAKER_03: Nerd.
[58:53] SPEAKER_02: Ari, your crazy relationship?
[58:55] SPEAKER_05: Well, the cra I didn't even say it was a crazy relationship.
[58:58] SPEAKER_05: I forget what I said, but this is the thing that started this whole segment.
[59:01] SPEAKER_02: Is I I know what you said, Ari.
[59:03] SPEAKER_02: I know what you said.
[59:04] SPEAKER_02: You said, I won't spoil what the thing is, but you said it's like that ex-girlfriend that you've had where it's the sex is so good that it makes up for the relationship being shit to just keep going back to it.
[59:18] SPEAKER_06: Don't listen to this.
[59:19] SPEAKER_05: That's not what I said, but maybe that's the nutshell of what I said.
[59:23] SPEAKER_05: No, I said it's like the toxic, it's like I I should just go find it.
[59:27] SPEAKER_05: I said toxic was the word.
[59:28] SPEAKER_05: I didn't say crazy X.
[59:29] SPEAKER_05: Yeah But um because we were talking about I I just wore off the Alpha Fly 3.
[59:34] SPEAKER_05: I did a I did a uh session in it leading into chat, and the whole, the whole time I was like, these shoes, I hate them.
[59:41] SPEAKER_05: I finally just I've had my doubts and like I finally decided I hate them and they suck, and I can't wait for this workout to be over.
[59:48] SPEAKER_05: I wish I could like turn around, but I'm literally like seven miles from my car.
[59:52] SPEAKER_05: So I just have to finish the workout.
[59:54] SPEAKER_05: And then swarm off, never, oh these shoes suck, they don't work for me, never doing them again.
[59:58] SPEAKER_05: And then since then, and since switching over and running Chattanooga and the ASICs MetaSpeed Edge, I've just been like, oh, what if what if I just give them one more go?
[1:00:10] SPEAKER_05: What if I just buy a new fresh pair and they you know, and what if they're different at Iron Man paste than 70.3?
[1:00:17] SPEAKER_05: And Jack messaged me and was like, you know, I think maybe you just you know really consider giving the Alpha Fly 3 another go.
[1:00:23] SPEAKER_05: And I was like, I hate to admit that I've been thinking the same thing for weeks.
[1:00:27] SPEAKER_05: It's like that toxic relationship you just keep going back to.
[1:00:31] SPEAKER_05: So that's my my crazy ex is the uh the Alpha Fly 3 uh TBD, whether I buy another pair.
[1:00:38] SPEAKER_05: I I probably will.
[1:00:40] SPEAKER_05: I hate myself.
[1:00:41] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, I mean I I've been around the block with the Alpha Fly 3 as well, had had my fair share at it, and uh I thought the experience was pretty stable.
[1:00:50] SPEAKER_05: Damn, you've been around the block with my crazy ex?
[1:00:52] SPEAKER_05: Of course you have.
[1:00:54] SPEAKER_05: She's been around the block with everybody.
[1:00:57] SPEAKER_02: Can't say that.
[1:00:59] SPEAKER_02: You can't say that.
[1:01:03] SPEAKER_02: I'm starting to think that you might be the crazy, the crazy one in this side of the relationship, Ari.
[1:01:07] SPEAKER_02: Okay, and you're stable?
[1:01:09] SPEAKER_05: Uh yeah, 20 mile long run's at six-minute pace.
[1:01:12] SPEAKER_05: They just like bread and butter.
[1:01:16] SPEAKER_05: They re-center me at the end of the at the end of the week.
[1:01:19] SPEAKER_05: And I'm pretty devastated I wasn't able to do one this morning.
[1:01:22] SPEAKER_05: But uh, they just I don't know what else to say.
[1:01:27] SPEAKER_05: It's my that's my stable girlfriend.
[1:01:29] SPEAKER_07: Don't try this one at home, listeners.
[1:01:31] SPEAKER_05: It's gonna be different for other people.
[1:01:33] SPEAKER_04: For other people, maybe it's 20 miles or two hours, whichever comes first.
[1:01:38] SPEAKER_04: That's what Frank Shorter said.
[1:01:40] SPEAKER_05: Yeah, yeah.
[1:01:40] SPEAKER_05: Pretty much exactly that.
[1:01:42] SPEAKER_05: Yeah.
[1:01:42] SPEAKER_02: So your stable is just everyone should be having a long run in their program.
[1:01:47] SPEAKER_05: Yeah, but uh like a nice uh steady one, like not just like slogging it.
[1:01:52] SPEAKER_05: I think you should find find a good rhythm.
[1:01:55] SPEAKER_05: One that's not that's not hard, but uh you're you're kind of in a nice flowy, like your strides a little bit open, and then you just hang out there for 80, 90, 100 minutes, and it yeah, it does something good to your brain.
[1:02:10] SPEAKER_04: Have you heard about zone two?
[1:02:12] SPEAKER_04: LT1.
[1:02:17] SPEAKER_02: Ari's out in a run getting a thermometer put up his ass by Olive's Olive Alexander Boot.
[1:02:22] SPEAKER_05: That would not be stable for me.
[1:02:25] SPEAKER_02: Okay, boys.
[1:02:26] SPEAKER_02: We've got a new segment to finish the show.
[1:02:28] SPEAKER_02: I promise it uh at the start of the show.
[1:02:31] SPEAKER_02: I'm curious to see what you guys think of this this stinger.
[1:02:33] SPEAKER_02: Let me let me play it now.
[1:02:35] SPEAKER_00: This is the intervention.
[1:02:37] SPEAKER_00: This is your intervention.
[1:02:39] SPEAKER_00: What?
[1:02:39] SPEAKER_00: My intervention for what?
[1:02:42] SPEAKER_01: This is an intervention.
[1:02:43] SPEAKER_00: This won't be easy for any of us.
[1:02:44] SPEAKER_00: But I want you to know that we're here today because we care about you.
[1:02:48] SPEAKER_05: What's going on?
[1:02:49] SPEAKER_05: Uh why don't you have a seat, bud?
[1:02:51] SPEAKER_05: Just want to talk to you for a sec.
[1:03:10] SPEAKER_02: For those who don't know, that's a famous intervention scene on the hangover movies when Alan gets uh an intervention from the rest of the cast.
[1:03:18] SPEAKER_02: Today we're we're bringing an intervention to the to the table, to the podcast for for one of us four.
[1:03:23] SPEAKER_02: And again, it if this wasn't planned, but I got sent a message during the week from a listener who was concerned.
[1:03:31] SPEAKER_02: So let me play that message.
[1:03:34] SPEAKER_08: Hey Jack, Ryan Heisler from Slow Twitch.
[1:03:36] SPEAKER_08: Um have you checked in on Justin lately?
[1:03:40] SPEAKER_08: Um I was looking at a couple of things, and I think he might have an addiction problem.
[1:03:47] SPEAKER_08: Um we've been reviewing all of our numbers uh ever since we launched the new forum, and Justin's usage of the Slow Twitch forum keeps increasing like week by week.
[1:04:00] SPEAKER_08: Like he's now at the point where he's spending almost eight hours a day on the Slow Twitch forum.
[1:04:07] SPEAKER_08: And I mean, don't get me wrong, I love a good controversy about the hydration rules and you know, debating T100 versus Iron Man broadcasts, but this is becoming a problem.
[1:04:21] SPEAKER_08: Like I'm really concerned.
[1:04:22] SPEAKER_08: He's on there more than I am, and I work here.
[1:04:26] SPEAKER_08: Um, so do you think you guys might be able to check in on him, make sure that he's okay?
[1:04:31] SPEAKER_08: Uh appreciate it.
[1:04:34] SPEAKER_02: So thank you, Ryan, for listening to the show and sending in that voice messaging, letting us know that there is an issue here that we have to address.
[1:04:42] SPEAKER_02: Justin, this is an intervention.
[1:04:45] SPEAKER_02: You've been with your partner for ten years now.
[1:04:48] SPEAKER_02: You've been friends with all of us for much longer than that.
[1:04:52] SPEAKER_02: And yet none of us knew that you've been hiding a secret from us that must feel so isolating and lonely.
[1:04:58] SPEAKER_02: You don't have to fight this alone.
[1:05:00] SPEAKER_02: Slow Twitch lurking and being a slow Twitch creep is not something you need to live with for the rest of your life, Justin.
[1:05:07] SPEAKER_02: And it's been exposed that you are a slow Twitch lurker and a slow Twitch creep.
[1:05:12] SPEAKER_02: You can fight this.
[1:05:13] SPEAKER_02: You can beat this.
[1:05:14] SPEAKER_02: We want to help you beat this.
[1:05:16] SPEAKER_02: Sitting alone by yourself in your bedroom, scrolling the slow Twitch forums, reading every comment, hoping no one says anything bad about you, creating burner account after burner account to write nice things about yourself and hate comments about the people you don't like in Triton.
[1:05:33] SPEAKER_02: This is not something that you have to live with forever.
[1:05:36] SPEAKER_02: You've beaten addiction once before in your early twenties.
[1:05:39] SPEAKER_02: We've heard all about that.
[1:05:40] SPEAKER_02: You can do it again here in your thirties.
[1:05:43] SPEAKER_02: We want to support you, but to support you, first, you need to admit that you have a problem.
[1:05:51] SPEAKER_07: Well, thanks, boys, for getting me together on this one.
[1:05:55] SPEAKER_06: This is shit.
[1:05:55] SPEAKER_05: Why are you laughing?
[1:05:57] SPEAKER_04: I mean, on the other hand.
[1:05:59] SPEAKER_04: Can I say something?
[1:06:00] SPEAKER_04: Can I say something?
[1:06:01] SPEAKER_04: Sure.
[1:06:02] SPEAKER_04: Go for it.
[1:06:03] SPEAKER_04: I I prepared a piece.
[1:06:05] SPEAKER_04: It took me a little bit of time, but I just want to read it.
[1:06:08] SPEAKER_04: Dear Justin, this comes from a place of love.
[1:06:11] SPEAKER_04: We're worried about you.
[1:06:13] SPEAKER_04: You've already read every possible tire pressure debate.
[1:06:16] SPEAKER_04: It's okay to take a break.
[1:06:18] SPEAKER_04: I admire your dedication, but your wife Lauren has reached out.
[1:06:22] SPEAKER_04: She said you were arguing with a random Canadian Canadian about saddle angles for three hours.
[1:06:27] SPEAKER_04: It sounds like a cry for help.
[1:06:29] SPEAKER_04: The good news is we're here for you.
[1:06:31] SPEAKER_04: It's okay to let the guy with 17,000 posts have the last word.
[1:06:35] SPEAKER_04: He probably DNF'd his last six races.
[1:06:38] SPEAKER_04: I'm worried you're gonna lose your job at upstart and your world will come crashing down.
[1:06:42] SPEAKER_04: Let me support you during this tough time.
[1:06:44] SPEAKER_04: Love, Greg.
[1:06:47] SPEAKER_05: I prepared one as well.
[1:06:49] SPEAKER_05: Justin.
[1:06:51] SPEAKER_05: I always thought you were one of the best guys I know.
[1:06:54] SPEAKER_05: Rock solid, loyal, level-headed, and just an all-around good person.
[1:06:59] SPEAKER_05: When I saw that you were not only commenting on, but starting threads about me on Slow Twitch saying really hurtful things, I wasn't mad.
[1:07:08] SPEAKER_05: I wasn't even upset.
[1:07:09] SPEAKER_05: I'm just sad for you, mate, because you're sick and you need help.
[1:07:14] SPEAKER_05: I know how hard it must be to get off your 30-minute one-on-one call a little bit early, knowing you have 45 minutes till your next meeting and just trying to resist heading to the message boards.
[1:07:24] SPEAKER_05: But it can't go on any longer.
[1:07:26] SPEAKER_05: We're here for you to support you through this process, but if it doesn't stop, then this podcast, the weekly Patreon exclusive podcast, and unfortunately our friendship are all in jeopardy.
[1:07:38] SPEAKER_05: I hope you can find it in yourself to ask for help and make the right decisions from from here.
[1:07:43] SPEAKER_05: We're here for you, Justin.
[1:07:44] SPEAKER_05: Love, Ari.
[1:07:50] SPEAKER_07: Oh my God.
[1:07:51] SPEAKER_07: Alright, well, thank you for the heartfelt messages, boys.
[1:07:55] SPEAKER_07: He's not admitting it.
[1:07:56] SPEAKER_02: Justin, will you admit you have a problem and let us help you?
[1:07:59] SPEAKER_07: No, this is a bloody bullshit.
[1:08:03] SPEAKER_07: Obviously.
[1:08:04] SPEAKER_07: I'm a slow twitch account.
[1:08:05] SPEAKER_07: My username is my username is Tri-Ski20.
[1:08:09] SPEAKER_07: I just logged in for the first time in like six months.
[1:08:11] SPEAKER_07: Oh, sure.
[1:08:12] SPEAKER_02: Oh yeah.
[1:08:13] SPEAKER_02: I swear it was only one time.
[1:08:18] SPEAKER_07: Oh my goodness.
[1:08:19] SPEAKER_07: He's the Kevin Durant of triathlon burner accounts.
[1:08:23] SPEAKER_07: Yeah, just siphoning them through.
[1:08:25] SPEAKER_05: He's got the perfect alibi lined up, had another account that hasn't been logged into for six months.
[1:08:31] SPEAKER_05: He just logged into land.
[1:08:34] SPEAKER_02: Justin, it appears like you won't admit you have a problem.
[1:08:38] SPEAKER_07: You know, I think I'm doing just fine, guys.
[1:08:41] SPEAKER_07: Eight hours a day.
[1:08:42] SPEAKER_02: Eight hours a day, you're on the Slow Twitch forums.
[1:08:45] SPEAKER_02: Eight hours a day.
[1:08:46] SPEAKER_02: Ryan, he's two in charge.
[1:08:48] SPEAKER_02: He's second in charge at Slow Twitch.
[1:08:49] SPEAKER_02: He approaches us, he says they've been looking into accounts.
[1:08:52] SPEAKER_02: You've been on for eight hours a day on average.
[1:08:55] SPEAKER_05: It's red flags, mate.
[1:08:56] SPEAKER_02: That's over 60 hours a week you're spending on Slow Twitch, creeping, lurking in the background.
[1:09:03] SPEAKER_07: I don't know.
[1:09:04] SPEAKER_07: I think I think the only Slow Twitch forum thread I've read in the last few months is called Jack Kelly the Triathlon Hour, which continues to be one of the most popular threads with 374 posts.
[1:09:17] SPEAKER_07: I have uh contributed zero of those, but I enjoy eating my popcorn and reading it.
[1:09:22] SPEAKER_02: Alright, boys.
[1:09:23] SPEAKER_02: That's a fun show.
[1:09:24] SPEAKER_02: We've got to follow up on this next week.
[1:09:26] SPEAKER_02: It does feel like Justin isn't admitting he's got a problem.
[1:09:29] SPEAKER_02: I think the next step, the only logical step, is we get either Eric, who runs Slow Twitch, or Ryan, who's second in charge at Slow Twitch, to come on the show next week and reveal actual usage statistics of Justin's accounts.
[1:09:41] SPEAKER_02: So this is what happens when addicts don't admit they have a problem.
[1:09:45] SPEAKER_02: You present them with hard cold facts and then you ship them off to rehab.
[1:09:49] SPEAKER_02: So our next step, let's present the facts and then Justin might have to go on a break from the podcast because uh he might need rehab.
[1:09:56] SPEAKER_02: Uh Ari, Greg, Justin, episode number two in the books.
[1:10:00] SPEAKER_02: That was awesome.
[1:10:00] SPEAKER_02: Thank you, boys.
[1:10:02] SPEAKER_05: Thanks, Jack.
[1:10:03] SPEAKER_05: Later.
[1:10:11] SPEAKER_02: You're not gonna say goodbye, Justin?
[1:10:13] SPEAKER_07: Sorry, I was reading Slow Twitch threads.
[1:10:16] SPEAKER_07: Of course you were.
[1:10:20] SPEAKER_02: And if you have anything that you think any of us four are doing, send it in on that memo app.
[1:10:25] SPEAKER_02: Just on the triathlon hour, Instagram, go to the bio.
[1:10:28] SPEAKER_02: We will host an intervention.
