## Transcript

[0:28] SPEAKER_02: Yes, we are back.
[0:29] SPEAKER_02: It's day two of the Iron Man 70.3 World Championship Daily Podcast.
[0:34] SPEAKER_02: And whether you're a contender like the great Benjamin Zorg Noddy or a pretender like Christian Blumenfeld, we're just stoked to have you here with us for the week and uh joining in on the ride.
[0:43] SPEAKER_02: I'm joined uh for day two by the baldest man in triathlon, the man who wants to have a one-night stand with Alistair Brownley, as we found out on yesterday's daily podcast, and the most opinionated man in Trithlon, Greg Harper.
[0:55] SPEAKER_04: Thanks for having me, Jack.
[0:56] SPEAKER_04: It's good to be back for day two.
[0:57] SPEAKER_04: And who wouldn't want to have a one-night stand with Alistair Brownley?
[1:00] SPEAKER_04: Like, are you even a triathlon fan if if you wouldn't?
[1:03] SPEAKER_04: So uh yeah, Alistair, respond to my DMs, please.
[1:05] SPEAKER_04: Okay, bye.
[1:06] SPEAKER_04: Thanks.
[1:08] SPEAKER_02: And as always, I'm joined by the second greatest triathlete of all time, the man who was only four minutes away from winning the 2017 Iron Man 70.3 World Championships, Sam Apo Appleton.
[1:20] SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Jack.
[1:21] SPEAKER_01: 2017, lifetime ago, but um still doing it, still here.
[1:26] SPEAKER_01: Happy to be doing the daily pods, day two.
[1:28] SPEAKER_01: Let's go.
[1:29] SPEAKER_04: I heard he was sick that day too.
[1:30] SPEAKER_04: So probably would have won, huh, Apo?
[1:32] SPEAKER_04: Is that isn't that what they usually say when someone gets like fourth place or something?
[1:35] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yeah.
[1:36] SPEAKER_01: Probably easy dub if I wasn't sick.
[1:38] SPEAKER_01: Easy dub.
[1:41] SPEAKER_02: Oh, shout out Patrick Lang.
[1:43] SPEAKER_02: Uh boys, we've gotten uh we've gotten used to starting these podcasts talking about movies the last uh couple of weeks.
[1:51] SPEAKER_02: And so I thought I'd mix it up today and go into TV shows.
[1:55] SPEAKER_02: So my question to you what are the three greatest TV shows of all time, in your opinion?
[2:01] SPEAKER_02: Apo, start us off.
[2:02] SPEAKER_01: Breaking Bad.
[2:04] SPEAKER_01: True Detective season one, don't bother with seasons two, three, or four, and Band of Brothers again, season one.
[2:12] SPEAKER_01: They're the best, they're the pinnacle of TV.
[2:14] SPEAKER_01: Um, especially True Detective.
[2:16] SPEAKER_01: That's the that's the best thing that's ever graced the um the screen.
[2:19] SPEAKER_01: It is very good.
[2:20] SPEAKER_04: I feel like the other seasons are fine though.
[2:22] SPEAKER_04: Maybe the second one wasn't awesome, but if you started with like three or four, you'd be like, oh, this is a solid TV show, but it set the standard so high.
[2:30] SPEAKER_04: I feel like that's what happened with Game of Thrones too.
[2:32] SPEAKER_04: Like it's never lived up to the beginning, but those are good shouts.
[2:35] SPEAKER_04: True Detective is is uh really good.
[2:37] SPEAKER_02: I only watched True Detective for the first time a month ago, Apo.
[2:41] SPEAKER_02: I literally just watched the first season.
[2:43] SPEAKER_02: Uh I think I finished two weeks ago.
[2:44] SPEAKER_02: Didn't I tell you to watch it, Jack?
[2:46] SPEAKER_02: Nah, I messaged you and asked you whether you had watched it, Greg, when I was watching it.
[2:50] SPEAKER_02: Because I was like, this is so good.
[2:51] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it's great.
[2:52] SPEAKER_01: It's probably the only TV show I've watched.
[2:54] SPEAKER_01: I've watched season one probably four times throughout um, you know, in the last ten years.
[3:00] SPEAKER_01: I just every couple of years I go back for a rewatch.
[3:03] SPEAKER_02: Can I just spoiler alert here for a second?
[3:05] SPEAKER_02: So if you haven't listened to True Detective, just skip forward 30 seconds from now.
[3:10] SPEAKER_02: But when you guys saw the man on the lawn mower, did you pick that he was the he was the killer?
[3:16] SPEAKER_01: Um Well, we kind of knew that he was involved, right?
[3:19] SPEAKER_01: Didn't we know?
[3:20] SPEAKER_02: Nah.
[3:21] SPEAKER_01: I feel I feel like we already knew.
[3:22] SPEAKER_01: I did I definitely didn't.
[3:24] SPEAKER_01: Because he was at the school, right?
[3:25] SPEAKER_01: He was at the school mowing the lawn.
[3:27] SPEAKER_02: Matthew McConaughey's character just asks him a question and the guy answers it.
[3:32] SPEAKER_02: And then when it all comes like back full circle and they found out that it was him, he uh says in the hospital bed to his partner, Woody Harrelson, he says, I saw that, I saw that guy.
[3:41] SPEAKER_02: I I met him at the the school, he was uh the groundskeeper.
[3:44] SPEAKER_04: No, I definitely didn't.
[3:45] SPEAKER_04: I was like mind blown.
[3:46] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I was mind blown too.
[3:48] SPEAKER_02: What about you, Greg?
[3:49] SPEAKER_02: What are your top three TV shows of all time?
[3:51] SPEAKER_04: Alright, my favorite show is Ted Lasso.
[3:53] SPEAKER_04: I've watched it many times.
[3:55] SPEAKER_04: I just everyone tries to be so like dark and edgy these days, and Ted Lasso is just like a good, feel-good, like there's some good life lessons in there and the character development.
[4:03] SPEAKER_04: I just love it, so that's that's mine.
[4:06] SPEAKER_04: Uh Legally Blonde, the TV show.
[4:08] SPEAKER_04: No, I'm just kidding.
[4:09] SPEAKER_04: Um The Wire.
[4:12] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, that's a good shit.
[4:13] SPEAKER_04: I love the wire.
[4:14] SPEAKER_04: Just rewatched it.
[4:15] SPEAKER_04: Uh did some nighttime hanging out with my newborn and watching The Wire, so that was fun.
[4:20] SPEAKER_04: And a little teen drama, Veronica Mars.
[4:23] SPEAKER_04: You guys should check it out.
[4:24] SPEAKER_04: That's just a wild call, Veronica Mars.
[4:27] SPEAKER_01: Greg, I'm surprised you didn't have like Buffy the Vampire Slayer or charmed on there or something.
[4:31] SPEAKER_04: One tree hill.
[4:33] SPEAKER_04: The OC.
[4:34] SPEAKER_04: The OC.
[4:35] SPEAKER_04: I grew up with two older sisters.
[4:37] SPEAKER_04: What do you guys expect from me?
[4:38] SPEAKER_04: Okay, we're all product of our environment.
[4:40] SPEAKER_04: All right.
[4:41] SPEAKER_04: The OC was good.
[4:42] SPEAKER_01: Do not tell me that you guys didn't enjoy the OC when it was coming out.
[4:46] SPEAKER_02: Mate, I still think about Seth Cohen from time to time.
[4:48] SPEAKER_02: He was just the man.
[4:50] SPEAKER_04: I'm I'm we're watching a show with him right now, actually.
[4:52] SPEAKER_02: Oh wow.
[4:53] SPEAKER_02: Uh, and for me, Breaking Bad, so same as Apo, my favorite TV show of all time.
[4:58] SPEAKER_02: Uh, Better Call Soul as well, the prequel to Breaking Bad.
[5:01] SPEAKER_02: I actually think it's not far off being as good as Breaking Bad.
[5:04] SPEAKER_02: And uh a bit of a new addition to my my top three, Clarkson's Farm.
[5:08] SPEAKER_02: If you guys haven't watched Clarkson's Farm, you've got to get on it.
[5:11] SPEAKER_02: It's so good.
[5:11] SPEAKER_01: I've never heard of that, Jack.
[5:12] SPEAKER_01: What's it about?
[5:13] SPEAKER_02: So it's Jeremy Clarkson's new TV show.
[5:15] SPEAKER_02: Because you know the other day how we got compared to the top gear boys, the Jeremy Clarkson, James May, and the short guy, who's kind of the Greg of the group who I've forgotten.
[5:24] SPEAKER_02: Um we got compared to them.
[5:26] SPEAKER_02: And since that I've been watching Clarkson's Farm, which is it's Jeremy Clarkson, he owns a farm in the Cotswolds, and it's just him farming the farm, and he's no good at it, and it's really, really, really good.
[5:36] SPEAKER_04: I did tune into a few episodes.
[5:37] SPEAKER_04: I was like, I was entertained.
[5:39] SPEAKER_04: I learned stuff about farming, which is cool.
[5:41] SPEAKER_02: That you'll never use.
[5:43] SPEAKER_02: But now when people talk about farming, you can like nod along like an expert because you watch the show.
[5:49] SPEAKER_02: All right, boys.
[5:50] SPEAKER_02: Let's do our favorite part of every episode on the daily podcast.
[5:54] SPEAKER_02: It's reading your Spotify comments.
[5:56] SPEAKER_02: And like always, we just love it.
[5:58] SPEAKER_02: Like it's seriously just the best part of doing the daily podcast.
[6:01] SPEAKER_02: So make sure you jump onto today's episode and leave a comment.
[6:04] SPEAKER_02: The better the comments are, the better the podcast are.
[6:07] SPEAKER_02: I'll kick us off.
[6:08] SPEAKER_02: So Zach Farrington says, heard the kid called the older guy a pretender at the finish line, and that's why he threw hands.
[6:16] SPEAKER_02: So if you didn't listen to yesterday's podcast, I recommend you do and go and listen to all the daily podcasts in order.
[6:23] SPEAKER_02: But we talked about the the fight at the Noosa finish line between the the old bloke and the young kid.
[6:29] SPEAKER_02: And there's been a little bit of development on my end about this point.
[6:33] SPEAKER_02: I I sent you a screenshot in the group chat today about a message I received.
[6:39] SPEAKER_02: I don't know how much of it you think I could talk I should talk about, but let's just say that that the police are now involved in the incident.
[6:48] SPEAKER_00: It's escalated.
[6:49] SPEAKER_00: Let's just put it that way.
[6:51] SPEAKER_02: Oh, what do you guys think?
[6:53] SPEAKER_02: Like, okay, maybe there's more to it than we saw.
[6:56] SPEAKER_02: But from what I can gather, from what people are saying, is that maybe the young kid was running pretty fast on the run course.
[7:02] SPEAKER_02: It's a very busy course, he was trying to get past.
[7:04] SPEAKER_02: Maybe the old guy didn't love that.
[7:06] SPEAKER_02: I don't know if anything was said.
[7:08] SPEAKER_02: Maybe there was a little bit of argy bargy, and then it escalated on the finish line.
[7:12] SPEAKER_02: To me, it seems like, yeah, okay, it's not great.
[7:15] SPEAKER_02: You don't want, you know, 60-ish-year-old blokes pushing 16-year-old kids.
[7:19] SPEAKER_02: It's not a standard we want to set.
[7:20] SPEAKER_02: But does it really warrant going to the police about well?
[7:23] SPEAKER_01: We don't know what else has happened, right?
[7:25] SPEAKER_01: Like this could have been an ongoing thing.
[7:27] SPEAKER_01: Uh maybe it wasn't just the push and the shove.
[7:30] SPEAKER_01: Um, but that guy, the older guy's name, the offender's name is out there.
[7:34] SPEAKER_01: I think someone posted it.
[7:35] SPEAKER_01: And it's um so if you're interested, it is out there.
[7:40] SPEAKER_00: He was there, but you can find it.
[7:42] SPEAKER_00: I can't remember.
[7:43] SPEAKER_00: Yeah, I'm not gonna say it, but if you're uh if you're that interested, it is out there and you can find it.
[7:47] SPEAKER_04: I don't know what they do in Australia, but if this was America, he would already have lost his job by now, which you know, like that's how we do it over here.
[7:55] SPEAKER_04: It's like cancel this guy.
[7:56] SPEAKER_04: They're like, take down his family and his job, he loses it.
[7:59] SPEAKER_04: So hopefully they resolve it, and yeah, anyway.
[8:02] SPEAKER_04: Drew Fulk says pretty crazy to see all the big names drop out of the race this weekend.
[8:08] SPEAKER_04: After seeing Trevor Foley drop out from another international race, he dropped out of Frankfurt, 2024, Nice, 2025, etc.
[8:17] SPEAKER_04: Do you think there's a conspiracy on whether or not Trevor Foley is allowed to leave America?
[8:22] SPEAKER_04: After browsing the PTO website, he hasn't raced outside the US since Iron Man 70.3 Cabo in 2022.
[8:30] SPEAKER_04: Do you think things might have gotten too crazy in Cabo 2022 for T Foley?
[8:36] SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna kick this to you guys.
[8:38] SPEAKER_00: What do you think?
[8:39] SPEAKER_00: This the episode title, Trevor Foley Banned from Leaving the US.
[8:46] SPEAKER_00: Yes, that is exactly what this is gonna be.
[8:49] SPEAKER_02: In a podcast that's gonna be dedicated to the women's race at the 70.3 World Championships, the title's gonna be Trevor Foley Banned from Leaving the United States.
[8:58] SPEAKER_01: He did race Frankfurt though in 2024, didn't he?
[9:00] SPEAKER_01: He just didn't finish.
[9:01] SPEAKER_01: So he has left the country.
[9:04] SPEAKER_02: Or was it even him?
[9:06] SPEAKER_02: I really doubt things got crazy in Cobo in in 2022 for Trevor.
[9:10] SPEAKER_02: He doesn't really strike me as the kind of guy who's gonna go and do like a hangover type thing, does he?
[9:15] SPEAKER_04: Not quite.
[9:15] SPEAKER_04: I will say, and I don't want to harp on Trevor too much.
[9:19] SPEAKER_04: I am sad that he's not racing.
[9:20] SPEAKER_04: I know he kind of skipped Nice and said, Hey, I'm I'm gonna focus on Marbella, but he's not here.
[9:25] SPEAKER_04: Much like our other co-hosts and all these other North American males who decided to skip the race, which I'm slightly disappointed in, but um it's not that uh that mindset I'd like to see.
[9:35] SPEAKER_01: I'm also not allowed to leave the country.
[9:38] SPEAKER_02: I just think it's smart, Greg.
[9:40] SPEAKER_02: I think you've got to pick your battles as a professional triathlete at the moment.
[9:43] SPEAKER_02: There's so many races, there's so many big races.
[9:46] SPEAKER_02: Like, okay, maybe it is best Trevor has a great day, but I think he's way more of a chance to win Iron Man Arizona, help him with sponsorship for the following year, help set him up, you know, maybe gets him an early Kona qualification for next year, which is probably actually his big goal, versus go and roll the dice at 70.3 world championships where he's not guaranteed to have a good result.
[10:06] SPEAKER_02: Like, sure, if he wins it or podiums it, it's probably better for his career.
[10:10] SPEAKER_02: But if he finishes like sixth or seventh at 70.3 World Championships versus winning Iron Man Arizona, like I'd go and win our Iron Man Arizona every day of the week if I'm Trevor.
[10:18] SPEAKER_01: Keith Murth says, love the special logo.
[10:21] SPEAKER_01: So if you don't know what that is, Jack has a new special logo for these daily pods, looks great.
[10:26] SPEAKER_01: Also, would love the podcast with video.
[10:29] SPEAKER_01: That's something we've actually thought about, haven't we, Jack, doing like a um kicking the um recording to YouTube or something like that?
[10:37] SPEAKER_01: Um but yeah.
[10:38] SPEAKER_01: Saw Greg on a social kick doing a video pod for the first time.
[10:42] SPEAKER_01: Maybe put the video on Patreon.
[10:44] SPEAKER_01: And yeah, we have thought about that.
[10:46] SPEAKER_01: We have thought about recording this and putting it on YouTube and things like that, but I don't know.
[10:50] SPEAKER_01: Are people actually interested in just looking at three faces talking into microphones?
[10:54] SPEAKER_01: Do you think that's something that people want?
[10:56] SPEAKER_01: Keith Murphy's.
[10:57] SPEAKER_02: I think people don't mind it for sure, but I reckon the thing is like we put so little effort into it, and like it just means you have to put more effort into like how you look and where your microphone is and that kind of thing.
[11:09] SPEAKER_02: We could do it.
[11:09] SPEAKER_02: I like the idea of doing it for the after hours pods, like for the 30-minute podcast that's gonna go on Patreon that we do every week after we record.
[11:17] SPEAKER_02: I reckon maybe we do a video for that and chuck that on Patreon.
[11:19] SPEAKER_02: That would be good, but yeah, maybe, maybe on YouTube one day.
[11:23] SPEAKER_04: It could be casual too.
[11:24] SPEAKER_04: We don't have to make it super professional, I guess.
[11:28] SPEAKER_02: All right.
[11:28] SPEAKER_02: Wabi Sabi says, what a name.
[11:31] SPEAKER_02: Uh I don't think that's his real name, but maybe it is.
[11:34] SPEAKER_02: What hurts most is having your comment read out, but it's another user with the same comment.
[11:39] SPEAKER_02: That's where it feels personal.
[11:41] SPEAKER_02: You start to wonder, is it my screen name?
[11:43] SPEAKER_02: Okay, there we go.
[11:44] SPEAKER_02: Not his real name.
[11:45] SPEAKER_02: Are they checking my race results?
[11:46] SPEAKER_02: Am I too slow to matter?
[11:48] SPEAKER_02: Is it because I wore a road helmet at Lake Placid one year?
[11:51] SPEAKER_02: I'm just a triathlete standing in front of a podcast asking it to love me.
[11:56] SPEAKER_02: Well, Wabi Sabi, yes, put your real name up there.
[11:58] SPEAKER_02: Stop being a pussy.
[12:00] SPEAKER_02: And what we're gonna do is in today's episode, we'll let we're gonna see.
[12:04] SPEAKER_02: Leave your race results, put your top three results, your fastest times, all your PBs, and then we're gonna judge you on tomorrow's Spotify comments.
[12:12] SPEAKER_02: We'll let you know if you're too slow or not to comment on the Spotify from now on.
[12:17] SPEAKER_01: Sub 570.3, or it's uh it's not getting read out next time.
[12:21] SPEAKER_02: We might be harsher than that.
[12:23] SPEAKER_02: We'll see.
[12:23] SPEAKER_02: We'll wait and see.
[12:24] SPEAKER_01: All right.
[12:25] SPEAKER_01: Patty Lee says, and this is in reference to yesterday's chat about the men's race sleeping on Casper is pretty crazy.
[12:31] SPEAKER_01: He ran minutes into Christian and Gustav off a lot of climbing on a hot course.
[12:36] SPEAKER_01: I think Casper is a podium win weapon.
[12:39] SPEAKER_01: And I don't think we meant to sleep on Casper yesterday.
[12:42] SPEAKER_01: Maybe we didn't bring him up and chat about him enough, but he's definitely in that top five for me and definitely a potential to win.
[12:50] SPEAKER_01: I just don't know if he has the run that Christian or Yeller have over a 70.3.
[12:56] SPEAKER_01: And you know, I could be wrong.
[12:58] SPEAKER_01: He did outrun Christian at the at Nice Iron Man World Championships with the 230, so he does have the wheels, but I just think Christian and Yella have so many good runs under their belt, and Kasper is a bit of an unknown to me.
[13:12] SPEAKER_02: Well, remember, Greg he completely wrote off the Norwegians.
[13:15] SPEAKER_02: He said not none of the three Norwegians are having a good race.
[13:18] SPEAKER_02: So we kind of talked about him a little bit.
[13:20] SPEAKER_02: I just I got a question for you, Apo.
[13:22] SPEAKER_02: If the Iron Man World Championships that day, like say there was like some crazy event that happened, they said we've got to cut the run short, it's now only a half on a half marathon to finish instead of a full marathon, would Christian and Gustav have both beat Casper Stoinas or would Casper have won?
[13:38] SPEAKER_01: Um I mean, no, probably not, right?
[13:40] SPEAKER_01: Because Casper took the lead in the second half of the marathon.
[13:44] SPEAKER_01: So I think Christian and Gustav potentially could have beaten Casper if it was just a half marathon at Nice.
[13:49] SPEAKER_02: And I think that's where our question with Casper is, isn't it?
[13:52] SPEAKER_02: Is is he as good over this distance as what he's now proven he is at Iron Man?
[13:57] SPEAKER_02: Like I personally just think that until he does it over 70.3, because he hasn't really had any like super world-class results over 70.3 distance yet.
[14:06] SPEAKER_02: Not to say he had over Iron Man either.
[14:07] SPEAKER_02: Like he could do it.
[14:08] SPEAKER_02: But you I think you're crazy to say that he's the favourite over, say, uh Gustav, who's won the 70.3 worlds two times, or Yalla, who is clearly showing that outside of Hayden Wilde he's the best in the world, or Christian Blumenfeld, who, again, he's he's done it before.
[14:23] SPEAKER_02: So it's not really that we're sleeping on it.
[14:25] SPEAKER_02: We definitely, again, like Nice, think he could finish top five, but we're just not brave enough to go out in a limb and predict that he can win, are we?
[14:32] SPEAKER_04: Some of us are brave enough to predict that he's not gonna do well, though.
[14:35] SPEAKER_04: All right.
[14:36] SPEAKER_04: Alex Samaida says, How is Max Newman coming back from the dead for 70.3 world champs not the biggest story of the men's race?
[14:45] SPEAKER_04: I agree with Max.
[14:47] SPEAKER_04: This podcast is biased against him and doesn't talk about him enough.
[14:52] SPEAKER_04: I agree fully.
[14:53] SPEAKER_04: And look, I'm gonna tell listeners go to Max's Instagram, send him a message, send him good luck, go comment on his recent uh Instagram post, which was probably from six years ago.
[15:04] SPEAKER_04: Let him know you're in this corner, you're happy he's not dead, and you're rooting for him this weekend.
[15:08] SPEAKER_04: Because I know Max through Jack, and I know he wants to get a ton of messages from you guys about the race this weekend.
[15:15] SPEAKER_04: So send them his way, wish him luck.
[15:20] SPEAKER_02: Nothing would piss Max off more than having 50 people DM him overnight.
[15:25] SPEAKER_02: He'd he'd just delete the Instagram app.
[15:27] SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I I second what we're doing.
[15:28] SPEAKER_02: He already has, dude.
[15:30] SPEAKER_02: He probably has actually.
[15:32] SPEAKER_02: It's I I dare say it is just his girlfriend, Holly, running his Instagram account.
[15:36] SPEAKER_02: And if you've ever got a DM from Max, there's absolutely no chance it was actually Max, let me tell you that.
[15:41] SPEAKER_02: Um, boys, uh side note, I was I had a coffee with Max today, and he was telling me that after Kona in 2022, where he finished fourth, he collapsed after the finish line the same way that like Taylor did or Lucy did.
[15:54] SPEAKER_02: And he reckons that once he recovered from that, about three weeks later he was in the best form of his life.
[16:01] SPEAKER_02: He thinks he says he's never felt better in racing or training.
[16:05] SPEAKER_02: And it just has me thinking about Lucy and Taylor after Cona.
[16:08] SPEAKER_02: We're all thinking that they're potentially gonna have bad races, maybe weren't gonna start.
[16:13] SPEAKER_02: But Maxie reckons that they could have great races and be in awesome form based on what his experience was for the same kind of thing.
[16:20] SPEAKER_01: Well, Max wasn't that race his last race in didn't Max wasn't that the race that did him in.
[16:26] SPEAKER_04: But he also got fourth, right?
[16:28] SPEAKER_04: He it he didn't DNF and like end up on the side of the road.
[16:32] SPEAKER_02: Uh he collapsed after the finish line.
[16:34] SPEAKER_02: Um and no Apo, uh Ibetha was after this.
[16:37] SPEAKER_02: Ibitha was uh a few months after this, and which he won, and Noosa was after it as well, which was one of the best races of his life, but he got disqualified because he got in a little bit of an argument with an official out on the race course.
[16:53] SPEAKER_00: That's not like Max.
[16:57] SPEAKER_02: He's gonna hate this.
[16:59] SPEAKER_02: Sean Watson asks, Jack, have you any insight to when Yalla is going to become a proper triathlete and go full course?
[17:08] SPEAKER_02: It would be great to see Geans versus Wilde at Kona.
[17:11] SPEAKER_02: Uh a little bit of insight.
[17:13] SPEAKER_02: I think you might see Yalla have a crack at qualifying for Kona next year.
[17:16] SPEAKER_02: Maybe, maybe an early season Iron Man, but he doesn't know yet as far as I'm aware.
[17:20] SPEAKER_02: But I think he wants to do Kona next year.
[17:22] SPEAKER_02: Although I'm hearing that Hayden maybe doesn't want to do Kona next year.
[17:26] SPEAKER_02: So we might have to wait for the Geans versus Wilde at Kona uh showdown.
[17:30] SPEAKER_02: But what do you boys think?
[17:31] SPEAKER_02: Do you think that Yala Geans could be a threat at Kona in 2026?
[17:34] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, absolutely.
[17:35] SPEAKER_01: I think he said on his podcast that he's looking at trying to qualify for Kona next year.
[17:38] SPEAKER_01: So yeah, you'd be silly not to think that he couldn't do well at Kona.
[17:42] SPEAKER_01: He's strong at all three.
[17:44] SPEAKER_01: He's shown in the T100 that he can time trial up there with the best of them, and he's one of the best runners in the sport.
[17:50] SPEAKER_01: So, you know, it's not a straight conversion from T100 to Iron Man, but it wouldn't surprise me to see Yeller have a great Iron Man in him, especially with um with Ben as his coach who knows what it takes to win Kona with Patrick.
[18:04] SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I think he'd be he'd be really good.
[18:07] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, of course he'd be good.
[18:08] SPEAKER_04: And but a proper triathlete doesn't mean Iron Man.
[18:11] SPEAKER_04: Olympic distance is the best distance, it's got an actual swim that matters.
[18:15] SPEAKER_04: So I don't like when people say that Iron Man means you're a proper triathlete.
[18:19] SPEAKER_04: Okay, like it just that doesn't make sense to me.
[18:22] SPEAKER_04: And that's all I have to say about that.
[18:25] SPEAKER_02: We get it.
[18:26] SPEAKER_02: You want to fuck Matt House up.
[18:27] SPEAKER_02: Just stop.
[18:28] SPEAKER_02: We get it.
[18:30] SPEAKER_01: But on that, Greg, I think you are kind of right though.
[18:33] SPEAKER_01: It's like you do a lot of people do the WTCS until they can't hang anymore, right?
[18:39] SPEAKER_01: And then they go to 70.3 until they can't hang anymore, and then they start doing Iron Man, and then, you know, until they can't hang, and then they go do Ultraman.
[18:48] SPEAKER_01: Um so yeah, it is kind of the way.
[18:50] SPEAKER_01: I'm not even talking about pros though.
[18:51] SPEAKER_04: Like I see people like, ah, I got into triathlon six months ago, I'm doing an Iron Man.
[18:56] SPEAKER_04: It's like, okay, you're just gonna cause damage to your body long term.
[18:59] SPEAKER_04: Like, you're not ready for that.
[19:00] SPEAKER_04: Like go and race an Olympic distance race and do it well and then move distances.
[19:05] SPEAKER_04: Like doing an Iron Man isn't cooler than doing an Olympic distance race.
[19:08] SPEAKER_04: You're just probably like going and going slow.
[19:09] SPEAKER_04: Like go and do a short race and go fast.
[19:11] SPEAKER_04: Like I don't know.
[19:12] SPEAKER_04: A triathlon's triathlon.
[19:13] SPEAKER_04: It's all it's all good distance.
[19:15] SPEAKER_04: You can't get that M dot though doing the sprint distance, the M dot tattoo.
[19:18] SPEAKER_04: Well, I have one just because I'm a fan, but like I didn't actually do an Iron Man, but I just I got one anyway, but whatever, no worries.
[19:26] SPEAKER_01: Alright.
[19:26] SPEAKER_01: Chris Chambers says Martin Van Riel is conspicuously absent from 70.3 World World Champs, which tells me he's balls deep training for an epic defense of his T100 title, which means we're gonna need to have daily pods for the T100 grand final.
[19:42] SPEAKER_01: Oh, don't do not sign me up for that.
[19:44] SPEAKER_01: I don't know if my body can take take any more daily pods.
[19:49] SPEAKER_01: Thanks in advance.
[19:50] SPEAKER_01: By the way, disappointed we have had all this cinema chat and with self-proclaimed movie buffs and not one mention of the greatest movie of all time, Terminator 2 Judgment Day.
[20:00] SPEAKER_01: That's a good one, dude.
[20:02] SPEAKER_01: I don't know if it's the greatest movie of all time.
[20:04] SPEAKER_01: I don't even know if that makes top 100, to be honest, Chris.
[20:06] SPEAKER_02: It's overrated, I reckon.
[20:08] SPEAKER_01: Yeah.
[20:08] SPEAKER_01: But to the Martin chat, I think, yeah, we're all a little bit disappointed that Martin's not there, right?
[20:13] SPEAKER_01: Because he this course suits him.
[20:15] SPEAKER_01: It's he's like yellow geans.
[20:17] SPEAKER_01: He's tiny, great power to weight ratio, and a fabulous runner.
[20:22] SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I think it's a shame that he's not racing.
[20:24] SPEAKER_01: Um maybe he's still kind of recovering from Nice and that injury that he had leading into Nice.
[20:30] SPEAKER_01: Um I don't know.
[20:32] SPEAKER_01: I don't think I think his T100 title is he's not going to be able to defend that, right?
[20:37] SPEAKER_01: Like I just think Hayden and Yeller are too far in front.
[20:40] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, but I don't think they're talking about the overall title.
[20:42] SPEAKER_02: I think they're just meaning the grand final, which remember he won the grand final last year.
[20:45] SPEAKER_02: I just think the thing with Martin's 2025, he has to regret how it's played out from a scheduling point of view.
[20:51] SPEAKER_02: I just think I think what happened and what's going to keep happening is there's so many races.
[20:56] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[20:57] SPEAKER_02: And you can't have it all.
[20:58] SPEAKER_02: Like you just cannot have it all.
[21:00] SPEAKER_02: And I think this weekend might tell us that that the guys who targeted guys and and girls who targeted the 70.3 world championships are going to have good years.
[21:08] SPEAKER_02: And there might be some some guys and girls who kind of tried to do it all that have a pretty tough day out there this weekend.
[21:14] SPEAKER_02: I think Martin, you know, that doing that double early in the year with Iron Man South Africa and then into the T100 Singapore race, and then the injury that happened from trying to prepare for Iron Man World Championships and squeeze it all in.
[21:26] SPEAKER_02: I just think on reflection, he would love to go back and not do such a crazy start to the year, pick his battles, and I bet you he would love to be here because this course does suit him, and we'd be talking about him as a real threat to win this race for sure if he was here.
[21:40] SPEAKER_04: Even like eight weeks ago or three months ago when he was injured, it seems weird that he didn't just say, uh, all right, let me knock out a Nice.
[21:47] SPEAKER_04: Let me just try to go for 70.3 worlds.
[21:49] SPEAKER_04: I have a little bit more runway.
[21:50] SPEAKER_04: But you know, Iron Man's Iron Man, it's a little more prestigious.
[21:53] SPEAKER_04: But yep, he would be uh dare I say contender if he was uh showing up to the race.
[21:58] SPEAKER_04: So um all right, Hannah Deere.
[22:00] SPEAKER_04: Asks, are we getting a fuck Mary Kill Iron Man 70.3 World Champs edition?
[22:07] SPEAKER_04: Um, I think we are.
[22:09] SPEAKER_04: And I'm gonna throw it to Jack.
[22:11] SPEAKER_04: Nick Thompson, Jamie Riddle, Vincent Louie.
[22:17] SPEAKER_02: Oh, that is a good one.
[22:20] SPEAKER_02: Uh oh god, that's a good one.
[22:25] SPEAKER_02: Do I trust Vince enough to marry him?
[22:27] SPEAKER_02: Probably not.
[22:28] SPEAKER_02: Uh so I'm probably going to have to kill Vincent Louis.
[22:35] SPEAKER_02: Uh Nick Thompson, I'm definitely oh Nick's funny, but I reckon like I reckon he's so sarcastic that living with him for 50 years might get a little tough.
[22:47] SPEAKER_02: So I'm gonna I'm gonna fuck Nick.
[22:49] SPEAKER_02: Uh because for one day, Nick would be one of the funnest blokes in Triton to hang out with.
[22:53] SPEAKER_02: And I guess I'm marrying Jamie Riddle.
[22:55] SPEAKER_02: Got a good family, met Jamie Ridd Riddle's family and niece, loved him.
[22:58] SPEAKER_02: So I assume that uh that Jamie must be a good bloke as well.
[23:01] SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I'm happy with that.
[23:02] SPEAKER_02: I'll marry Marry Jamie Riddle.
[23:04] SPEAKER_02: But also Greg and Apo.
[23:05] SPEAKER_02: I reckon we do a fuck Marry Kill tomorrow on tomorrow's daily podcast.
[23:08] SPEAKER_02: Like let's actually write them down and and do a fun segment to finish the show tomorrow.
[23:13] SPEAKER_04: All right, sounds good.
[23:15] SPEAKER_04: All males, guys, remember.
[23:18] SPEAKER_02: Maybe in the Spotify comments, can you leave some fuck Marry kills for us so we don't have to think about it?
[23:24] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a good idea.
[23:25] SPEAKER_01: But maybe not just like people, like competitors' names.
[23:29] SPEAKER_01: Like try and make it interesting.
[23:30] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, yeah.
[23:31] SPEAKER_02: It can be things for sure.
[23:33] SPEAKER_01: George Siararu?
[23:36] SPEAKER_01: Definitely, definitely butchered that.
[23:38] SPEAKER_01: Um sorry, George.
[23:41] SPEAKER_01: Finally, some good daily content to listen to on my pretending sessions.
[23:46] SPEAKER_01: Jack and Greg, why are we hiding heart rate data on your Strava runs?
[23:51] SPEAKER_01: Big Pretender Energy.
[23:53] SPEAKER_01: Release the heart rate files.
[23:57] SPEAKER_01: Um actually this reminds me, and I forgot to bring this up, you know, when we were having our Strava kind of um, you know, things that annoyed us about Strava?
[24:06] SPEAKER_01: I'm was a bit remiss to forget that I for the lot for my whole professional career, I have been applying for a Strava pro account.
[24:18] SPEAKER_00: And they will not fucking give me how many 70.3 wins do I have to have for them to give me a pro account.
[24:30] SPEAKER_00: Does anyone go to someone at Strava?
[24:32] SPEAKER_01: I got a guy.
[24:33] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, please hook me up.
[24:35] SPEAKER_01: Anyone I can hook you up, Apo.
[24:37] SPEAKER_02: You don't post all your stuff on Strava though, do you, Apo?
[24:40] SPEAKER_01: I mean, most of it goes to Strava.
[24:42] SPEAKER_01: I might hide a session or two here when I'm feeling a bit frisky, but most of it goes to Strava.
[24:46] SPEAKER_02: Can you follow me on Strava, by the way, Apo?
[24:48] SPEAKER_02: I refuse to follow you first.
[24:50] SPEAKER_04: Jack's got a weird complex about that shit.
[24:52] SPEAKER_04: All right.
[24:53] SPEAKER_04: I just want to address George's um heart rate files.
[24:56] SPEAKER_04: I just I don't wear a heart rate monitor half the time.
[24:59] SPEAKER_04: But when I do, I do show my data.
[25:02] SPEAKER_04: So that's what I gotta say about that.
[25:04] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, if I wore a heart rate monitor, I would 100% put it on there.
[25:08] SPEAKER_02: But I just have the risk-based heart rate, and it's always the same every run, no matter what.
[25:12] SPEAKER_02: It's always within like two or three beats per minute.
[25:15] SPEAKER_02: Like I could run a minute per case slower on the exact same loop on the exact same day, and the heart rate would be the same.
[25:21] SPEAKER_02: So it doesn't work, and I'm like, it's just not worth it.
[25:23] SPEAKER_02: But maybe I'll invest in a in a chorus arm strap and uh and start putting it on there because I would kind of know.
[25:28] SPEAKER_02: Now I'm getting a little bit fitter.
[25:30] SPEAKER_02: I actually would be kind of interested.
[25:31] SPEAKER_01: Don't you think that heart rate is such an important metric though?
[25:35] SPEAKER_01: Like I I look at heart rate more than I look at pace, even when I'm riding my bike.
[25:41] SPEAKER_01: I would like if I had the choice between power or heart rate, like I would probably choose heart rate for training.
[25:48] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think it is.
[25:49] SPEAKER_02: I think it is if you're taking your training really seriously, which I hadn't been up until recently.
[25:54] SPEAKER_02: Now I'm starting to uh yeah, I definitely agree.
[25:57] SPEAKER_02: I would like heart rate data, but I also just love the purity of going out for a run and not worrying about data at all.
[26:04] SPEAKER_02: Like I don't really ever do that.
[26:06] SPEAKER_02: Like I just go for runs with people, do whatever they're doing.
[26:09] SPEAKER_02: If I do a session, I just do it to feel like with my own training, I'm not a big data guy, even though with athletes I coach, I'm like a huge data guy.
[26:17] SPEAKER_02: So it's kind of just like a bit of a bit of a paradox that.
[26:20] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, and I will say I had two tempo runs last week, and that's when I used the heart rate monitor because I was trying to like monitor.
[26:26] SPEAKER_04: But for an easy run, it's like I know how to run easy.
[26:28] SPEAKER_04: Like I whether my heart rate's 122 or 132, like I don't really care that much as a thing.
[26:33] SPEAKER_04: So um now I will say one thing.
[26:36] SPEAKER_04: I had someone text me who's a pretender out there listening.
[26:40] SPEAKER_04: Hey, tell Jack to release his heart rate data.
[26:43] SPEAKER_04: He seems like he's getting pretty fit.
[26:45] SPEAKER_04: And this guy follows you on Strava, Jack.
[26:47] SPEAKER_04: And this is a shout-out, uh, Dr.
[26:48] SPEAKER_04: Hansen.
[26:49] SPEAKER_04: He's a pro, he's our orthopedic doctor for the professional triathletes.
[26:54] SPEAKER_04: Anyway, so he was curious about Jack's heart rate data.
[26:56] SPEAKER_04: So there's a lot of people out there, Jack, and they want to see your data and they think you're a good athlete.
[27:00] SPEAKER_04: I had to let them know that you were once a good junior runner, and now you're getting back to your old ways.
[27:06] SPEAKER_04: So they want it, Jack.
[27:07] SPEAKER_04: Release the heart rate data.
[27:08] SPEAKER_02: And we know that all that matters is how you ran when you were 15 or 16, and the rest of your career is really pretty pointless.
[27:16] SPEAKER_02: I think we all know by now that fueling your training and racing has become such a massive part of getting the most out of yourself as an athlete.
[27:23] SPEAKER_02: And if you're someone who doesn't realize that or knows it but still does a lot of faster training or just wings your day-to-day training nutrition, or even worse, your racing nutrition, then you need to stop doing that.
[27:35] SPEAKER_02: And the best way for you to fuel your training and racing is using precision, fuel and hydration.
[27:40] SPEAKER_02: Precision's PF90, PF30, PF-30 caffeine, and flow gel are the best gels on the market.
[27:45] SPEAKER_02: They taste great.
[27:46] SPEAKER_02: Their texture is incredible, unlike almost every other gel I've used.
[27:49] SPEAKER_02: And the packaging they come in is just so easy to use, which is low-key a huge benefit.
[27:54] SPEAKER_02: They also have energy chews, which are a nice mix-up from gels and honestly probably taste even better than gels.
[28:00] SPEAKER_02: They're really easy to use on the bike or out on a long run.
[28:03] SPEAKER_02: They're just a great mix up.
[28:04] SPEAKER_02: They also have a carbohydrate drink mix, which is great to use on the bike, or if you've got someone riding next to you while you do a long run, or just to have on pool deck while you swim.
[28:14] SPEAKER_02: It's an awesome option for that.
[28:16] SPEAKER_02: Precision, they just make the best training and racing nutrition on the market.
[28:19] SPEAKER_02: There's not even a close second, in my opinion.
[28:21] SPEAKER_02: So if you're using other brands, at least give precision a try because I think you'll like them more and you'll realize why they're literally taking over the triton fueling market.
[28:31] SPEAKER_02: It's not because they spend a heap of dollars marketing, it's because they really don't compare to some other big brands.
[28:36] SPEAKER_02: It's just because their stuff is the best.
[28:38] SPEAKER_02: So try it for yourself.
[28:40] SPEAKER_02: Head over to Precision Fuel and Hydration's website and use the discount code TTH25 for 15% off your first order.
[28:48] SPEAKER_02: All right, boys, we've spent uh enough time on this, but thank you all for sending in your Spotify comments.
[28:54] SPEAKER_02: Uh if you didn't get your Spotify comment read out, there's a chance you just didn't get it in on time.
[28:59] SPEAKER_02: Make sure you get it in nice and early before we do the recording for the next day.
[29:02] SPEAKER_02: So head over to Spotify.
[29:04] SPEAKER_02: Uh maybe now, maybe hit pause now, leave a comment, or maybe wait till the end of the episode.
[29:08] SPEAKER_02: Leave a comment.
[29:09] SPEAKER_02: Give us some fuck marriage, give us some good opinions to talk about for tomorrow's episode, because we are going to be starting all of these daily podcasts this week with your Spotify comments.
[29:18] SPEAKER_02: But for now, the main body of the podcast, just like yesterday, we did the deep dive for the men's race at the Iron Man 70.3 World Championships.
[29:25] SPEAKER_02: Today we're going to do our deep dive for the women's race at the Iron Man 70.3 World Championships.
[29:30] SPEAKER_02: And I've got a like a broad stroke comment for you boys that might seem controversial and a hot take, but I'm going to say it.
[29:39] SPEAKER_02: I would say for the majority of races for the last 24 months, I've been as excited, if not more excited, for the women's races.
[29:47] SPEAKER_02: I think they're highly competitive.
[29:48] SPEAKER_02: I think the top of the tree has probably more athletes who can win on any given day.
[29:54] SPEAKER_02: The level's insanely high.
[29:56] SPEAKER_02: But this is one of the first races in a long time where there's a men's and women's race where I'm clearly more excited for the men's race.
[30:04] SPEAKER_02: And I I think the women's race is quite lackluster at the top.
[30:07] SPEAKER_02: I think it's got three or four really good athletes and then a huge drop-off and lacks the depth that we're used to seeing in big women's races.
[30:15] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, you know that the tripole insta that like updates all the athletes, it's just like red marks across the entire thing, you know, like there's so many women not racing.
[30:24] SPEAKER_04: I think it's gonna be fun at the front, but yeah, like you said, like we might just see big gaps.
[30:28] SPEAKER_04: You know, some of these T100 races too, like they end up being these big gap races.
[30:33] SPEAKER_04: You know, there's only 20 athletes, and it could be something like that too, where we might know who's gonna win this race like pretty early and kind of the gaps there might not be that many battles on course that are really intriguing, potentially, you know.
[30:46] SPEAKER_04: I think so.
[30:46] SPEAKER_04: I think Jack's I Jack's on with that.
[30:49] SPEAKER_04: And you know, not that the women's race won't be exciting, but um, yeah, the the gaps could form, and we don't quite know how all these women are gonna shake out, especially post-Kona.
[30:59] SPEAKER_04: You know, it's like that Kona hangover.
[31:00] SPEAKER_04: It's only a month ago.
[31:01] SPEAKER_02: It looks like there's gonna be about 40 women who were qualified who aren't gonna race, Greg, which has got to be the most of any race since I've been covering the sport.
[31:10] SPEAKER_02: And some of the big names that aren't racing, like Kate Woth, I wish we could talk about her because I think she would win this race, but she's not racing.
[31:17] SPEAKER_02: Julie Duron's not racing, Laura Phillips not racing, Ash Gentle's not racing, Lisa Perder is not racing, Chelsea Cedaro, Hannah Berry, who just finished fourth at Kona.
[31:26] SPEAKER_02: Like, there is a lot of big names, and all of those women who I just mentioned, we would be talking about on today's podcast 100%.
[31:33] SPEAKER_02: And they probably would all finish top 10.
[31:35] SPEAKER_02: They're not racing though.
[31:36] SPEAKER_04: What's with Julie Duron?
[31:38] SPEAKER_04: I mean, I know we want to talk about the athletes who are racing, but she just raced like last weekend and then she's not doing this race.
[31:43] SPEAKER_04: It's a little bit weird, honestly.
[31:46] SPEAKER_04: She would do crazy well at this race.
[31:47] SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
[31:48] SPEAKER_04: I feel like she's a good strong climber.
[31:50] SPEAKER_04: Like she's kind of late.
[31:51] SPEAKER_04: I don't know.
[31:52] SPEAKER_01: Maybe it's a case of it just being like we're towards the end of the year, right?
[31:56] SPEAKER_01: And a lot of people, like we said a little bit earlier, there's just so much racing on, and I wonder if people have just spent their biscuits and they're tied, and people, you know, some people from the US or from the Southern Hemisphere don't want to travel all the way to Europe for a world champ.
[32:11] SPEAKER_01: Like I can kind of empathize with it a little bit, but it is a little bit disappointing that there's not um the strength that like some of the T-100 races have had.
[32:21] SPEAKER_01: Like some of those women like Kate Waff, Ashley Gentle, um Julie Duron, like they're all T100 winners, right?
[32:28] SPEAKER_01: And to not have them racing the 70.3 World Champs, yeah, it is a little bit disappointing.
[32:33] SPEAKER_02: Julie Duron didn't qualify.
[32:34] SPEAKER_02: That's why she didn't.
[32:36] SPEAKER_02: Um Kate Waff obviously prioritized T100.
[32:39] SPEAKER_02: And I just think when she started her year, probably didn't realise how good she was going to be at middle distance.
[32:44] SPEAKER_02: I think if she could have crystal balled this, she would 100% be racing.
[32:48] SPEAKER_02: So I think that's the the situation with Kate.
[32:51] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, Julie didn't qualify.
[32:52] SPEAKER_02: And then the rest, I think they've just chosen not to because they've had massive seasons.
[32:56] SPEAKER_02: I want to I want to take this conversation to a different place now because of this.
[33:01] SPEAKER_02: So when it comes to the hierarchy of triathlon races at the moment, where do you guys think that the Iron Man 70.3 world champs ranks in the most prestigious and desired triathlon race to win tier list?
[33:15] SPEAKER_02: Like what number is it right now?
[33:17] SPEAKER_01: Second after the Iron Man World Championships.
[33:20] SPEAKER_01: I still think it's the second most important race of the year.
[33:23] SPEAKER_04: I would agree, but I was just thinking the same thing because last year a lot of people didn't go, right?
[33:27] SPEAKER_04: It was late in the year, a lot of people, and this year it's almost slightly less it's a little more underwhelming, right?
[33:35] SPEAKER_04: And are we seeing a trend, right?
[33:36] SPEAKER_04: So maybe in three years it's gonna be like, well, 70.3 world champs.
[33:40] SPEAKER_04: It's it's gonna be like it did when uh your coach won it uh uh Reedy or uh Apo.
[33:44] SPEAKER_04: No one cares, right?
[33:45] SPEAKER_04: Um no, I'm just kidding.
[33:47] SPEAKER_04: Um and uh so uh it could go in that direction, but I still think it's second on the list.
[33:52] SPEAKER_04: And we saw the races are gonna be competitive, they're gonna be hyped, and the best athlete in the world is one of them in over middle distance, is still winning both the men and women's race this this weekend.
[34:03] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[34:03] SPEAKER_02: I mean, apart from the Olympics, obviously, if we're counting the Olympics, it clearly goes Iron Man World Championships, then Olympics, and a big gap to third, doesn't it?
[34:11] SPEAKER_02: But you still think that the Iron Man 70.3 world champs is bigger than like the T-100 grand final or a big European or American Iron Man or a WTCS win or challenge Roth or any T100 race?
[34:23] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think so.
[34:24] SPEAKER_01: I think I mean WTCS maybe like the whole series might be more important, but as a singular race, I still think it's second.
[34:34] SPEAKER_01: Um I did wrestle with something like Roth, but I think 70.3 words like a lot of these people, like if you win this race, you're a world champion, right?
[34:44] SPEAKER_01: And the I yes, I know the T-100 is technically, you know, trying to bring in world champion T-100, but it just doesn't have the same doesn't have the same aura to me as an Iron Man World Championship.
[34:56] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I agree.
[34:57] SPEAKER_02: I think it's still number three behind Iron Man and the Olympics.
[35:00] SPEAKER_02: So it kind of surprises me that we don't have more women on the start line.
[35:04] SPEAKER_02: I just think that they need to change the scheduling of it.
[35:07] SPEAKER_02: Like, I don't think it works being so close to the Iron Man World Championships like it used to when Iron Man dominated and you could only race Iron Man races.
[35:15] SPEAKER_02: I reckon they should now maybe not open the season with it, but like, don't you think 70.3 world champs middle of the year and then Iron Man World Champs at the end of the year would be a way better scheduling move for Iron Man going forward?
[35:28] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, 100%.
[35:29] SPEAKER_01: They should put it in the in in summer, June or July, and then there's enough time for people to prepare, build in for 70.3 worlds, and then if they want to do Iron Man World Championships as well, then they've got a few months to prepare for that.
[35:40] SPEAKER_01: I've always I've said for the last 10 years that it just never made sense being they used to have it in September for many years, which was like a few weeks out from Kona.
[35:49] SPEAKER_01: Um the last few years it's been a little bit different, but yeah, I just think at the end of the year, a lot of athletes are done, they're tired, they've they've done all their racing.
[35:57] SPEAKER_01: I think if you had it in June or July, there'd be a lot more kind of yeah, a lot more people targeting it, I think.
[36:04] SPEAKER_04: It's gone back to before for both men and women next year, though, which I I kind of like.
[36:08] SPEAKER_04: I mean that four-week, five-week before, I feel like that's decent timing.
[36:13] SPEAKER_04: I think it's better than what it is four weeks after Kona, that's for sure.
[36:16] SPEAKER_04: So we'll see how it goes next year.
[36:18] SPEAKER_04: It seems like it can be part of the build for the Iron Man World Championship.
[36:21] SPEAKER_04: Now we'll get everyone at their complete best prepping for it.
[36:24] SPEAKER_04: Uh, who knows?
[36:25] SPEAKER_04: But I like that they're going back to before for both men and women next year.
[36:30] SPEAKER_02: And I talked about it earlier on the podcast when Max Newman told that story about being in great shape after having a bit of a heat episode uh at Kona 2022.
[36:38] SPEAKER_02: That leads us on to Taylor Nibb.
[36:40] SPEAKER_02: So Taylor Nib, she's the defending champion.
[36:42] SPEAKER_02: She's been unbeatable at the 70.3 World Championships recently.
[36:46] SPEAKER_02: She's racing, she's she's here.
[36:47] SPEAKER_02: She's just landed in Marbella right now, literally an hour ago, uh, and and she's looking to come and defend her title.
[36:55] SPEAKER_02: How do you boys expect Taylor Nibb to go?
[36:57] SPEAKER_01: I think if she's recovered from that heat episode, I think she's probably my favorite to win.
[37:04] SPEAKER_01: It just there's so much unknown, right?
[37:06] SPEAKER_01: Like, how much did that take out of her?
[37:08] SPEAKER_01: Um, was she able to get into training pretty quickly?
[37:11] SPEAKER_01: Is there yeah, is there anything going on like health-wise after that episode?
[37:16] SPEAKER_01: I think there's things that we don't know that probably only Taylor knows.
[37:20] SPEAKER_01: Um so it's hard to kind of pass judgment, but if she's feeling good, it wouldn't surprise me for her to take another 70.3 world title.
[37:30] SPEAKER_01: Well, and she's here, right?
[37:31] SPEAKER_04: So something did go okay over the last few weeks, right?
[37:34] SPEAKER_04: If she was in a bad, bad spot, she probably wouldn't have made the trip.
[37:37] SPEAKER_04: So I've got to ask you, I'll ask Coach Jack, like, what do you do?
[37:41] SPEAKER_04: Do you do like a run session and like he like how do you t how do you test yourself?
[37:46] SPEAKER_04: And Taylor's like, I'm good.
[37:47] SPEAKER_04: Like I do a race prep session, okay, it went fine.
[37:50] SPEAKER_04: I do two or three, they all went fine, I'm ready.
[37:52] SPEAKER_04: Like, how do you figure out if you're ready to race after something like that?
[37:56] SPEAKER_02: Yep.
[37:57] SPEAKER_02: Uh so there's a couple of things.
[37:58] SPEAKER_02: The first thing you do is that immediately after that race, so once you finish that race at Kony, you go and get your your test done, and they kind of will tell you where all of your um electrolyte levels are, and just in general, like they'll do like a kidney health test and that kind of thing.
[38:15] SPEAKER_02: And then your doctors and and your coaches are going to work together and give you and let you know, hey, these are what baseline values should be for a healthy functioning human.
[38:24] SPEAKER_02: Here's what yours are right now, here's where they need to return to.
[38:28] SPEAKER_02: And so for sure Taylor would have done that.
[38:31] SPEAKER_02: Like she's the level of professional that would do that kind of thing.
[38:33] SPEAKER_02: And so I guarantee you that medically her baseline health and her kidney function and that kind of thing are back to where they should be.
[38:41] SPEAKER_02: And if they weren't, she wouldn't have raced.
[38:43] SPEAKER_02: So that's step one, and clearly she's got past that hurdle.
[38:46] SPEAKER_02: Then step two, it really just comes down to a confidence thing and a lack of training thing and where you're at because you're not going to be training.
[38:54] SPEAKER_02: So she wouldn't have been training much, either with Lucy Charles Barclay, for example.
[38:58] SPEAKER_02: They would have had big periods of rest.
[39:00] SPEAKER_02: They probably did two weeks of nothing since Kona and then just got back into one week of like experimenting, seeing where we're at, maybe doing some gentle sessions.
[39:09] SPEAKER_02: And so that's when they probably make the call to be like, okay, I actually feel all right, or nah, I still feel shit and tired.
[39:15] SPEAKER_02: And even though maybe health-wise, my my blood work and my urine has come back suggesting that I'm healthy enough to race, uh, I'm I'm I'm not gonna do it.
[39:24] SPEAKER_02: So clearly they've done both things, Greg, where medically they've got the tick off uh and they're back to being healthy, normal, functioning humans, and also probably done some some little sessions to give them confidence.
[39:35] SPEAKER_04: I can't cra not crack up when you say urine.
[39:37] SPEAKER_04: I think you're talking about like a like an orbiting like space ball or so.
[39:41] SPEAKER_04: I don't even know.
[39:42] SPEAKER_04: Just like it just doesn't run anyway.
[39:44] SPEAKER_02: Euron.
[39:47] SPEAKER_01: We can apply all this to Lucy Charles as well, right?
[39:51] SPEAKER_01: Um like she's probably done all the testing, she has a great team around her, so um, yeah, it's interesting.
[39:57] SPEAKER_01: It'll be interesting to see how it plays out.
[39:59] SPEAKER_01: But those two women, Taylor and Lucy, like if they're on, I don't see you know many people challenging them for the win, especially you know, Lucy has shown she's been racing really, really well this year at that T100 distance.
[40:12] SPEAKER_01: So she might be coming in, you know.
[40:14] SPEAKER_01: I said Taylor was probably the favourite, but Lucy is not far behind, in my opinion, if she's coming in healthy.
[40:20] SPEAKER_01: And she also stepped off the course a little bit earlier than Taylor did as well, right?
[40:25] SPEAKER_01: So and Taylor went to exhaustion, right, at Kona.
[40:29] SPEAKER_01: We saw her collapse.
[40:30] SPEAKER_01: Like Lucy never got to that point.
[40:31] SPEAKER_01: Yes, she was wobbling, yes, she didn't look that good, but you know, Reese pulled her off the course and she still looked quite lucid, whereas Taylor, she dropped out and you know, she didn't know where she was in the world.
[40:42] SPEAKER_01: So yeah, maybe that could play a factor into it as well.
[40:45] SPEAKER_02: And these are the last four Iron Man 70.3 world champions, like, because we obviously know that Lucy Charles Barclay's potentially best race she ever had was at the St.
[40:54] SPEAKER_02: George 2021 Iron Man 70.3 World Championships, where she had the fastest swim, bike, and run of the day.
[41:00] SPEAKER_02: And then Taylor's gone on to win three in a row.
[41:03] SPEAKER_02: So no one has ever won four Iron Man 70.3 World Championships in a row.
[41:07] SPEAKER_02: And I think Taylor loves history, like I like she loves records, she loves doing things that other people haven't done before.
[41:13] SPEAKER_02: So I think there was never a question that Taylor wanted to be here.
[41:17] SPEAKER_02: And I think now that she is here, there's probably not been a 70.3 world champs course that has suited her more in this stretch.
[41:23] SPEAKER_02: So I mean, if she is fit and healthy, you're you're kind of crazy to bet against Taylor Nib.
[41:28] SPEAKER_02: And I think preempting thinks she's my favourite for the race.
[41:30] SPEAKER_02: But yeah, if neither if neither of those two had a race, then the last four high man 70.3 world championships winners wouldn't have been on the start line.
[41:38] SPEAKER_02: So it is a good thing for the race that they're here.
[41:40] SPEAKER_04: And Lucy is is there, like she's boots on the ground, like that's that's been confirmed.
[41:44] SPEAKER_02: I haven't seen her personally, but I got told she's racing.
[41:47] SPEAKER_02: So unless unless it's just a like a strategic thing and she's not, but someone told me she's racing, so I'm assuming she's racing.
[41:53] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, this is all speculation, but I I think from a fan perspective, we hope to see Lucy racing because she's such a great athlete.
[42:00] SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I'd be disappointed if she's not racing.
[42:02] SPEAKER_01: So let's uh let's keep those fingers crossed.
[42:06] SPEAKER_02: Okay, so a quick break from the show to talk about something that's a game changer, not for your training, but for your online life, and that's Nord VPN.
[42:15] SPEAKER_02: As triathletes, we're constantly on the move.
[42:18] SPEAKER_02: Training camps, races, overseas trips, airports, hotel, Wi-Fi, and let's be honest, not all of those connections are secure.
[42:25] SPEAKER_02: That's where NordVPN comes in.
[42:28] SPEAKER_02: It protects your data and keeps your online activity private no matter where you are in the world.
[42:33] SPEAKER_02: I use NordVPN every single time I travel.
[42:36] SPEAKER_02: It's fast, it's reliable, and I can even use it to access my favorite streaming services and race coverage from anywhere in the world.
[42:43] SPEAKER_02: It's like having a secure internet connection that travels with you wherever you go.
[42:47] SPEAKER_02: So if you want to stay safe online and stay connected wherever your trython journey takes you, head to NordVPN.com forward slash trython hour for an exclusive deal.
[42:58] SPEAKER_02: Plus, there's a 30-day money-back guarantee if you want to try it completely risk-free.
[43:03] SPEAKER_02: So that's NordVPN.com forward slash trython hour.
[43:07] SPEAKER_02: Protect your data, protect your privacy, keep training smart, and watch those movies, TV shows, or race streams wherever you are in the world for free.
[43:18] SPEAKER_04: I'll do a quick swim chat, just how I expect it to go down.
[43:21] SPEAKER_04: Now there's kind of a few main good swimmers, you know, Lucy Taylor, like we said, Jess Learmonth is there, and maybe Georgia Taylor Brown.
[43:33] SPEAKER_04: Like those are probably the strongest swimmers in the field.
[43:36] SPEAKER_04: There were 20 women within one minute last year.
[43:39] SPEAKER_04: So it was similar to the men's race.
[43:41] SPEAKER_04: However, when Lucy's there versus when Lucy's not, changes the dynamics drastically.
[43:46] SPEAKER_04: So it could be more strung out than the men's race.
[43:49] SPEAKER_04: I mean, there's there's plenty of women like um Bianca Bogan, DeJenner Arnold, Hannah Devet, Caroline Poole, um Louisa Pratt, uh like there's a bunch, there's some fringe women who could pot potentially be with in the front pack, but I think if Lucy gets there and her and Jess are going off the front, I think it'll be a select group and it might be strung out more.
[44:13] SPEAKER_04: But I just think like I kind of want to ask you guys, do you think the swim is like really important, or do you think it's like less important for the females versus the males, or is it kind of in that same boat?
[44:23] SPEAKER_04: Like this race is going to be one on the bike.
[44:25] SPEAKER_02: I think it's more important for the female race because I think Kat Matthews, I think her race maybe depends on the swim.
[44:31] SPEAKER_02: So if there's a situation where Lucy is racing and you have like Georgia Taylor Brown, Jess Liemont, Lucy Charles Barclay, and Taylor Nibb getting out of the water near each other, but Kat maybe is 90 seconds back, it becomes a tough day for Kat Matthews.
[44:45] SPEAKER_02: Whereas let's say Lucy isn't there and the swim's a bit more congested, I don't know.
[44:50] SPEAKER_02: I think Kat Matthews becomes a really, really hard person to beat.
[44:53] SPEAKER_02: I think the course suits her absolutely perfectly.
[44:56] SPEAKER_02: And if the swim dynamics are right, I think Kat's the favourite.
[44:59] SPEAKER_02: But I think if you add Lucy into the race with Taylor Nib, with Jessica Liamonth, with Georgia Taylor Brown, I reckon the day becomes bloody hard for Kat Matthews.
[45:08] SPEAKER_02: You know, in the way that when that core group of Kate Wolf, uh, Lucy Charles Barclay, Taylor Nib, and Jess Liamonth are in T100 races, it becomes impossible for Ash Gentle to win them.
[45:18] SPEAKER_02: That could be exactly what happens for Cat Matthews as well.
[45:22] SPEAKER_02: So I think that there's a scenario that plays out where Kat Matthews is the favorite and wins this race, but based on what happens in the swim, maybe she's not the favorite and she has to run her way back up into second or third.
[45:34] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, that's a good shout.
[45:35] SPEAKER_01: I also think pack dynamics aren't going to be as big of a factor in this race.
[45:40] SPEAKER_01: Like a lot of other 70.3 worlds, the swim is so important.
[45:43] SPEAKER_01: You want to be in that front group, you want to be with the motorbikes, you want to be in that front group just getting sucked along.
[45:48] SPEAKER_01: Whereas this race, with the climbing, I think what does play into Kat's favour is that a lot of women will be riding their own race.
[45:57] SPEAKER_01: The pack dynamics won't be as much of a factor, and she can just she's so strong on the bike that she can just plug away and reel in some of those faster swimmers.
[46:05] SPEAKER_01: But I do agree, I think Lucy being there changes the dynamic of the race a lot.
[46:10] SPEAKER_01: And I bet people like Taylor, Jess Liamonth, and Georgia Taylor Brown actually probably want someone like Lucy there to drive the swim and get away from those other people, um other women like Kat.
[46:20] SPEAKER_02: Yeah.
[46:21] SPEAKER_02: And I think like for Kat, you have to be scared of a Taylor Nib who gets to sit on the feet of Jessica Liamonth and Lucy Charles and then gets them to help her, and then she can slingshot off and build her gap.
[46:33] SPEAKER_02: Like for Kat, Kat's thinking, oh, I wish Lucy doesn't come, and I wish Jess Liamonth doesn't come, and I can just have a head-to-head battle with Taylor Nib.
[46:40] SPEAKER_02: Because I think head to head, Kat backs herself against Taylor.
[46:44] SPEAKER_02: But with help, it probably just becomes harder.
[46:47] SPEAKER_02: And she probably would never admit it.
[46:48] SPEAKER_02: She probably would say, Nope, I want the best there, I want to beat the best.
[46:52] SPEAKER_02: But deep down, it does make it harder for her to win this race with that front group because Taylor Nib can use them and abuse them.
[46:59] SPEAKER_02: Like she can use them for as long as she wants, and then when she decides to turn things up to 10 out of 10 on the bike, she can drop all of them, including Lucy, in my opinion.
[47:07] SPEAKER_04: Lucy's just crazy though.
[47:09] SPEAKER_04: There's just no one in the sport, men or women, who can influence a race like she can.
[47:13] SPEAKER_04: Like whenever she's in it, it's just it's just totally different for everyone.
[47:16] SPEAKER_04: Um, so yeah, hopefully she's there, like we said.
[47:19] SPEAKER_04: Um, and hammering the swim per usual.
[47:21] SPEAKER_04: Now, do you think there's like they're on the first climb?
[47:24] SPEAKER_04: Taylor and Lucy are like, hmm, I'm thinking about Kona.
[47:27] SPEAKER_04: Like, should I just dial it back slightly here?
[47:29] SPEAKER_04: Like, where does the mental how how how can you recover mentally and like really be like, no, I'm I'm going for it.
[47:35] SPEAKER_04: 70.3.
[47:36] SPEAKER_04: I erased this, I'm a dog.
[47:38] SPEAKER_04: Like, how do you get to that point?
[47:39] SPEAKER_04: Because it just seems like it would be a little bit scary.
[47:42] SPEAKER_01: Not for a 70.3, I don't think.
[47:43] SPEAKER_01: I think for an Iron Man, if it was another Iron Man, yes.
[47:46] SPEAKER_01: 70.3, like after you've done a couple of Iron Man's, Greg, 70.3s are a walk in the park, maybe we'll find out soon enough.
[47:52] SPEAKER_01: But I mean no, probably not.
[47:54] SPEAKER_01: In answer to your question, they can throw caution to the wind a little bit for a 70.3.
[47:59] SPEAKER_01: It's you know, it's four hours, um, it's not that long compared to what they're used to.
[48:04] SPEAKER_01: Um, but back on the cat, like she's got to be so motivated, right?
[48:08] SPEAKER_01: Like, she's finished the Bridesmaid so often over the past few years, she's got to be really hungry for those for a world championship title.
[48:15] SPEAKER_01: And do you guys think that she has a better chance at winning this race than she did at Kona, or do you think that Kona um just gone was her best shot this year um for a world championship title?
[48:28] SPEAKER_02: No, I think a much better chance of winning this.
[48:31] SPEAKER_02: Like, I mean, Kat came second at Kona and it was a brilliant race, but Taylor Nib was a long way ahead of Kat with 1.6k to go before she collapsed.
[48:39] SPEAKER_02: So, you know, if if Taylor didn't do that, if Lucy didn't do that, Kat was a little way off winning.
[48:44] SPEAKER_02: Now, coulda, woulda, shoulda.
[48:45] SPEAKER_02: She came second.
[48:46] SPEAKER_02: It was a brilliant race and the best marathon I've seen in the sport, I think.
[48:49] SPEAKER_02: But I still think that she was probably never going to win that race, and she maximized her result at Kona.
[48:56] SPEAKER_02: That's just my opinion.
[48:57] SPEAKER_02: But I think she can win this race.
[48:58] SPEAKER_02: I 100% think Kat Matthews can win this race, and I think she's the hungriest.
[49:02] SPEAKER_02: Like, yes, Taylor Nib wants to go and win that fourth title in a row and create history, and I bet you she's hungry.
[49:08] SPEAKER_02: But no one would be hungrier than Kat because Kat, like you said, Apo, you gave the opinion that you think she's the best all-round female, like long horse triathlet in the world.
[49:17] SPEAKER_02: But she she's lacking that big title.
[49:19] SPEAKER_02: She hasn't gone and won that big title yet.
[49:21] SPEAKER_02: She's the only one inside that conversation, you know.
[49:24] SPEAKER_02: Like we mentioned her with Taylor Nibb and Lucy Charles Barclay and Laura Phillip and Ash Gentle.
[49:30] SPEAKER_02: She's in that category, but they've all won a big race.
[49:32] SPEAKER_02: Kat's won, you know, European Iron Man's and she's come second at 70.3 worlds and Iron Man World Championships, but she hasn't been on the top step in one of the big races.
[49:41] SPEAKER_02: So I think she has to be the hungriest person on the course on the weekend.
[49:44] SPEAKER_04: Kat seems to bounce back better than everyone, too.
[49:47] SPEAKER_04: Like we saw how many races she did last year.
[49:49] SPEAKER_04: She was pretty consistent the whole time.
[49:51] SPEAKER_04: This year she races a few less races.
[49:53] SPEAKER_04: She's ready to back up her performance from a month ago, and it almost doubled down.
[49:58] SPEAKER_04: Like, no one seems to be able to race as many times as consistently as Kat, and she raced less this year.
[50:05] SPEAKER_04: So I I agree with everything Jack said, and yeah, she's definitely gonna be a force, and depending on that swim, could uh could play a big role in how the how the race goes for her.
[50:14] SPEAKER_02: What about Solvig Lofseth?
[50:16] SPEAKER_02: Can can Solvig come back and do the doubles?
[50:19] SPEAKER_02: Can she win the Iron Man World Championships and back up and win the Iron Man 70.3 World Championships?
[50:23] SPEAKER_01: Norwegian?
[50:24] SPEAKER_01: Nah.
[50:27] SPEAKER_01: Her 70.3 results don't correlate with her Iron Man results, right?
[50:33] SPEAKER_01: So she's much stronger.
[50:34] SPEAKER_01: Like her Iron Man resume is much stronger than her 70.3.
[50:38] SPEAKER_01: Um you know, I don't want to say no, she can't because she's young, she's improving, and she hasn't done a ton of 70.3, so there is, you know, her ceiling is obviously really high, but from what we've seen this year, her 70.3s aren't as strong as her Iron Man, so I'm probably gonna say that it's gonna be tough for her to do the double.
[50:57] SPEAKER_01: Um, yeah, that's just my opinion.
[51:00] SPEAKER_04: I agree, Apo, and it seems like Kat sometimes steps up in a 70.3 and connects to the group more in the swim, and maybe doesn't quite because they swam together at the Iron Man World Champs, right?
[51:10] SPEAKER_04: Solvik and Kat.
[51:11] SPEAKER_04: I think there's a world where Kat comes out ahead of Solvik at this race.
[51:15] SPEAKER_04: So I'm not quite sure if Solvik could have a good swim.
[51:18] SPEAKER_04: It's the same deal.
[51:19] SPEAKER_04: Like if she swims three minutes or two minutes off the back, I think it's gonna be hard for her to get to the front.
[51:25] SPEAKER_04: But like I said, Norwegian method's dead.
[51:28] SPEAKER_04: Um, no, I'm just kidding.
[51:29] SPEAKER_04: I think I think it would be actually cool if she could surprise again and have a good race, right?
[51:34] SPEAKER_04: And I think we're all rooting for her.
[51:36] SPEAKER_04: I mean, she's obviously a fan of the show, the glove.
[51:39] SPEAKER_04: We love her here over at the triathlon hour, so we're rooting for her.
[51:42] SPEAKER_01: She won a world title and all she got was that stupid nickname.
[51:46] SPEAKER_02: That was a good Spotify comment.
[51:48] SPEAKER_02: I think the thing that works in solving Lof Cest Feather is the course, right?
[51:52] SPEAKER_02: Like she's one of the strongest cyclists in female triathlon.
[51:56] SPEAKER_02: And this is a this is a course where I think the women's race will be one on the bike.
[52:00] SPEAKER_02: I still expect the men's race to be one on the run, but I think this race is being one on the bike, whether it's Taylor Nib coming in with a massive gap, or Taylor and Lucy coming in together with a big gap to like um Kat Matthews, or maybe Solvig Losseth can do the impossible and work across that gap and get to the front of the race and have a really consistent run against Lucy Charles Barclay and Taylor Nib, who aren't at the top of their game because they haven't really trained since Kona and are a bit tired from a long season.
[52:29] SPEAKER_02: Whereas I think Solvig still seems really strong.
[52:31] SPEAKER_02: So if there's a way she could surprise at a 70.3 World Championships, I think this course is the one that could allow her to do it and use her bike strength.
[52:39] SPEAKER_02: But if she can't get to the front on the bike, she's no chance because she's not going to outrun someone like Kat Matthews.
[52:45] SPEAKER_02: It's just not happening, and she probably needs to be quite close to one of Taylor or Lucy, if not in front of them, to outrun them as well.
[52:52] SPEAKER_01: We haven't touched on Carolyn Pohl yet either, and I don't think many people are talking about her, but she's she's kind of flying under the radar.
[52:59] SPEAKER_01: And last year she won a bunch of races and was eighth at um 70.3 worlds last year.
[53:05] SPEAKER_01: What do we think of her?
[53:07] SPEAKER_01: Her this year hasn't been quite as strong as she was last year.
[53:11] SPEAKER_01: She just is coming off a DNF at T100 Wollongong, so we're not sure what really happened there, but um I think she's one that could surprise that not many people are talking about as well.
[53:20] SPEAKER_02: Oh, Apo, it's um it's one of those things where when you're saying like not many people are talking about Carolyn Pohl as one of the big like conversation pieces of the race, it probably does speak that the depth's not there and that it is a very top-heavy field because Carolyn's really great.
[53:34] SPEAKER_02: Like she's really great, she does really well at European 70.3s and she's a consistent performer.
[53:39] SPEAKER_02: But I kind of have her in that Hannah Berry category where she's really good and could finish fourth or fifth or sixth, but I don't see her beating the world's best.
[53:48] SPEAKER_02: Like I don't see her beating Kat Matthews or Taylor Nib or Lucy Charles Barclay, or maybe even Solid Losseth, or Paula Finlay, who we should probably talk about.
[53:56] SPEAKER_02: She's maybe the real dark horse of the race and going under the radar like she always does.
[54:00] SPEAKER_02: But I just think Carolyn Paul will have the kind of race she always does, a really consistent, solid race, but it won't be enough to get her to the win.
[54:09] SPEAKER_04: That's a good thought.
[54:09] SPEAKER_04: And yeah, you know, I I wanted to bring up Paula and I asked this question yesterday.
[54:15] SPEAKER_04: Who has this race as number one for the year, right?
[54:18] SPEAKER_04: Who's prioritized this?
[54:19] SPEAKER_04: Is Paula one of those people?
[54:21] SPEAKER_04: Because it seems like she loves 70.3 and she loves 70.3 world.
[54:25] SPEAKER_04: This is a tough bike course, which she's good at it, and not too technical of descents, which I know she doesn't love that from from what I can gather from her.
[54:34] SPEAKER_04: So she goes and reckies this course, knows the course well, circled this in January and thought, I'm gonna target this race.
[54:41] SPEAKER_04: She could, yeah, she could play spoiler.
[54:44] SPEAKER_04: And I dare I say win the race?
[54:46] SPEAKER_04: Maybe not, but I don't know.
[54:48] SPEAKER_04: This it could be her best performance at a 70.3 world ever.
[54:51] SPEAKER_04: Um so I don't know if you have any insight there on her or anyone else who's like this is this is the A race of the year.
[54:57] SPEAKER_02: Well, if if there was a 70.3 worlds that Paula Finlay could win, this has to be it, right?
[55:02] SPEAKER_02: Like this this is her best chance for the rest of her career, in my opinion.
[55:06] SPEAKER_02: Because exactly what you said, Greg, I think she's probably the only person in this field of the contenders who this is their A race.
[55:13] SPEAKER_02: Every every other woman that we're talking about, their A race was Kona.
[55:17] SPEAKER_02: Literally every single one of them.
[55:19] SPEAKER_02: She's the only one who that wasn't the case for.
[55:22] SPEAKER_02: So they're all tired, they're all coming off the back of a massive training block.
[55:26] SPEAKER_02: They've all no doubt had had off periods since Kona.
[55:29] SPEAKER_02: This is her chance.
[55:30] SPEAKER_02: This is her chance.
[55:31] SPEAKER_02: Like I guess the thing with Paula, which has probably been her problem her whole career, where she loves to finish second, third, fourth, fifth in these big races, and consistently does because she's so solid, but does she have the weapon?
[55:44] SPEAKER_02: Like, can her bike be the weapon it needs to be to win her this race?
[55:49] SPEAKER_01: I think Paula is so good at time trialling, right?
[55:53] SPEAKER_01: I'm not I'm not saying this course doesn't suit her, but I think like a rolling, undulating TT course is where Paula's strengths lie.
[56:01] SPEAKER_01: Like she was Canadian T T champ um a couple of times, and I just think kind of like when we alluded to the men yesterday, there's really strong guys like Magnus and Rico who love the TT courses.
[56:13] SPEAKER_01: I think Paula kind of falls into that category as well.
[56:16] SPEAKER_01: Um, and I mean I hope to be proven wrong because I really want Paula to do well.
[56:20] SPEAKER_01: Um, but I think I I think she's gonna be up there, but I just think maybe not vying for that win with someone like the Lucy Charles and the Cat Matthews.
[56:30] SPEAKER_04: I feel like she can climb though, like as good as anyone else, right?
[56:33] SPEAKER_04: I I think it was the French Riviera race where she like she put a minute into the entire field on that climb.
[56:41] SPEAKER_04: And yes, the hitters weren't there, right?
[56:43] SPEAKER_04: We know the best athletes, you know, Taylor Nibb, Lucy Charles, they weren't there that day, but I think Paula climbs super, super well.
[56:50] SPEAKER_04: So I think this course could even be better than just a straight TT course for her.
[56:53] SPEAKER_02: I agree, Greg.
[56:54] SPEAKER_02: I agree completely, especially given the field she's against.
[56:57] SPEAKER_02: I think this is Paula's chance.
[56:58] SPEAKER_02: But like if you boys were to put your life on it, where do you think she finishes?
[57:03] SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna say fourth.
[57:05] SPEAKER_04: Oh, I might have said that.
[57:07] SPEAKER_04: I think I'll just say third.
[57:08] SPEAKER_02: I I agree.
[57:09] SPEAKER_02: It's third to fifth, isn't it?
[57:10] SPEAKER_02: Like you'd be shocked if Paula Finlay didn't finish somewhere third, fourth, or fifth.
[57:15] SPEAKER_02: Like if she finished sixth or seventh, you'd be like, oh, that's surprising.
[57:18] SPEAKER_02: I thought she might have finished a bit higher.
[57:19] SPEAKER_02: But same thing, if she finishes first, you're probably equally surprised.
[57:22] SPEAKER_02: It's kind of the becoming the tale and story of Paula Finlay's career, isn't it?
[57:27] SPEAKER_02: Just always so consistently close to winning these big races, but not quite delivering and having that break breakthrough win.
[57:35] SPEAKER_02: Um, well, since her short course days, that is.
[57:38] SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I think big opportunity for Paula Finlay.
[57:40] SPEAKER_02: And what what why not?
[57:42] SPEAKER_02: Why not?
[57:42] SPEAKER_02: If she's ever going to do it, this this is probably the race.
[57:45] SPEAKER_02: Um, boys, we talked about dark horses yesterday.
[57:48] SPEAKER_02: Who do you think is the the number one dark horse, in your opinion, that we haven't talked about, or maybe we've only mentioned briefly who could have a good result?
[57:56] SPEAKER_01: I think someone like Jess Liamonth, like she's had a great T100 season, right?
[58:00] SPEAKER_01: And I know she did have a bit of a running injury, so her run's been a bit hit and miss this year, but if she's on, I could definitely see her rolling into T2 in the lead with like a group with someone like nearboard Lucy Charles if she's racing.
[58:14] SPEAKER_01: Um, and then it just kind of depends.
[58:16] SPEAKER_01: I don't think she quite has the run that someone like Lucy Charles has, but I think she could definitely surprise people.
[58:23] SPEAKER_01: And if they can get off with a big buffer, I could see just Lamont sneaking onto the podium.
[58:29] SPEAKER_04: That's a decent shout.
[58:30] SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna go someone in a similar boat with Georgia Taylor Brown.
[58:34] SPEAKER_04: She just hasn't put together a complete race at all this year.
[58:37] SPEAKER_04: Like she was winning that French Riviera race, and then she exploded and got like ninth place over like the last 10k or something.
[58:44] SPEAKER_04: But it's been two months since that race.
[58:48] SPEAKER_04: She can ride, she can run.
[58:50] SPEAKER_04: I just see a world where she finally like puts together a solid race, and she's she's an Olympic medalist.
[58:57] SPEAKER_04: Like, you can't discount her.
[58:58] SPEAKER_04: So I there's a weird world where maybe Taylor and Lucy don't have their days.
[59:03] SPEAKER_04: And if Georgia Taylor Brown won this race, I wouldn't be like crazy surprised.
[59:06] SPEAKER_04: I think it's a long shot, and obviously she has to step up her performance from what she's done already this year, but she just has to fit like you know, maybe she's doing some strength endurance work or whatever it is, some more time on the time trial bike in the last two months.
[59:19] SPEAKER_04: And yeah, I think she could surprise too, just like Jess Learmonth.
[59:23] SPEAKER_02: And another another athlete who maybe hurts Cat Matthews' chances, because she's probably going to be there in that front swim group, give or take, isn't she, Greg?
[59:29] SPEAKER_02: Depending on what Lucy Charles Barclay does.
[59:31] SPEAKER_02: But if Lucy doesn't do anything crazy and just swims a really high tempo, then that group with Georgia Taylor Brown, Taylor Nibb, Jessica Learmonth, maybe even like Bianca Bogan, those types, it becomes a really potent strong group.
[59:44] SPEAKER_02: Um I I reckon Lizzie Rayner, ex-member of the Chase Pack, is a bit of a dark horse.
[59:49] SPEAKER_02: I actually think like I fully I'll be surprised if she doesn't finish in the top ten.
[59:53] SPEAKER_02: I'll even maybe be surprised if she doesn't finish in the top eight.
[59:56] SPEAKER_02: No, I don't think she can win the race, but I expect her to have quite a good race.
[1:00:00] SPEAKER_02: I think maybe India Lee we're sleeping on.
[1:00:02] SPEAKER_02: I think she's racing after Kona.
[1:00:04] SPEAKER_02: And I think this course suits her, and I think she showed that she was fit at Kona.
[1:00:08] SPEAKER_02: Marjolaine Pierre clearly has something to prove after Kona.
[1:00:11] SPEAKER_02: And remember what she did on the bike course at Nice last year?
[1:00:14] SPEAKER_02: She rode off the front of the of the IMAN World Championships on a course very similar to this.
[1:00:18] SPEAKER_02: And so I think this course suits Marjolaine Pierre, and I reckon there's a chance she has one of the fastest times up the climb, which has to put her in a good position.
[1:00:26] SPEAKER_02: So for sure, and I think with so much to prove off the back of um of Kona, I think she'll she'll be highly motivated.
[1:00:33] SPEAKER_02: And then I think maybe the Australians, Ali Salthouse and Grace Tech, I think they're both gonna have really consistent races, finish somewhere in the top ten as well, and and maybe even one of them pushes up and finishes in the top five.
[1:00:44] SPEAKER_02: So I think there's like quite a few dark horses who, because of the calibre of the field, are potentially going to have career best days at the at the 70.3 world champs.
[1:00:53] SPEAKER_01: I mean, we we did say before, like at the beginning, that we were a little bit disappointed with the strength of field, but you we've just rattled off quite a few women that could potentially surprise and upset.
[1:01:05] SPEAKER_01: So yeah, after this chat, I'm a little bit more excited, a little bit more enthused.
[1:01:09] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, it's a good field.
[1:01:10] SPEAKER_02: It's just not the heights that we're used to of women's long distance racing.
[1:01:13] SPEAKER_02: Like usually the women's fields are so stacked that you just have too many names to talk about and you can't get close to mentioning them at all.
[1:01:19] SPEAKER_02: I reckon Hannah Devet as well could be could be quite potent on a course like this, lives and trains in Andorra in the mountains, which which obviously has to suit her.
[1:01:26] SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I think uh I think she's a she's a chance too.
[1:01:29] SPEAKER_02: Um, and then the opposite of the dark horse, we we did this with the men's race as well.
[1:01:33] SPEAKER_02: Who's your who's your favorite to win the race this weekend?
[1:01:36] SPEAKER_01: I'm gonna go Taylor Nib.
[1:01:38] SPEAKER_01: I think you know history has shown that she is the best, and I'm just gonna trust that she's coming in with great form.
[1:01:45] SPEAKER_01: She's flown all the way there from the US, so yeah, kind of like what Greg said.
[1:01:50] SPEAKER_01: I don't think she would have done that if she was unsure.
[1:01:52] SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna go with T Nib.
[1:01:53] SPEAKER_04: I hate to pick the same person, but I'm gonna double down on my Kona champion pick, Taylor Nib, and say Taylor Nib again.
[1:02:00] SPEAKER_04: Look, I just think Taylor's the best female triathlete on the planet, and it's just a matter of time before she nails Kona, and I think she's gonna nail her fourth 70.3 world champs again this year.
[1:02:11] SPEAKER_02: I agree.
[1:02:11] SPEAKER_02: Until proven otherwise, Taylor Nib is the best middle distance triathlet I've ever seen.
[1:02:16] SPEAKER_02: And I agree, Greg, the all-round best female triathlet in the world.
[1:02:20] SPEAKER_02: And I think this course is perfectly made for Taylor Nib.
[1:02:22] SPEAKER_02: If if Kona hadn't happened, we're not there's not a question in our minds, is it?
[1:02:26] SPEAKER_02: Like if Taylor didn't race Kona and she targeted this, we're just she's already won it.
[1:02:29] SPEAKER_02: Don't show up, basically.
[1:02:31] SPEAKER_02: I mean, it opens the door for Kat Matthews and Lucy Charles Barclay and the like, but yeah, I'm I'm still gonna pick Taylor Nibb for sure until she she shows me that she's not the the best middle distance triathlet in the world.
[1:02:41] SPEAKER_02: And what an achievement it would be if she could win four Iron Man 70.3 world world titles in a row.
[1:02:46] SPEAKER_02: That is unprecedented.
[1:02:48] SPEAKER_02: That's amazing in this sport.
[1:02:49] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, incredible.
[1:02:50] SPEAKER_02: Um, all right, boys, that's uh day two of the Iron Man 70.3 World Championships daily pods done and dusted.
[1:02:59] SPEAKER_02: Like I said, like we've talked about many times, get involved in this.
[1:03:03] SPEAKER_02: The daily podcasts are made by your involvement.
[1:03:05] SPEAKER_02: It's the best part of them by far.
[1:03:07] SPEAKER_02: So jump over onto Spotify, leave us a comment, give us an opinion on the race, give us an opinion about something we talked about today.
[1:03:13] SPEAKER_02: You know, take the piss out of one of us, give us a fuck, Mary Kill.
[1:03:16] SPEAKER_02: We want to start tomorrow's daily podcast with the best Spotify comments possible.
[1:03:20] SPEAKER_02: So get involved, get around it, uh, and and it'll be all the funner.
[1:03:24] SPEAKER_02: Apo, Greg, thanks for doing it.
[1:03:26] SPEAKER_02: Uh talk to you again tomorrow.
[1:03:27] SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Jack.
[1:03:28] SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Jack.
