[0:27] SPEAKER_04: Pretenders, we are back.
[0:29] SPEAKER_04: Yes, day two of the Daily Podcast.
[0:31] SPEAKER_04: That's right.
[0:32] SPEAKER_04: A podcast each and every day, all week in the lead up to the women's Iron Man World Championships at Kona this weekend.
[0:38] SPEAKER_04: And as always, we are joined by the only one of us who is even in the conversation for being a contender, Sam Appleton.
[0:45] SPEAKER_04: Apo, day two.
[0:46] SPEAKER_04: Let's go.
[0:47] SPEAKER_03: Thanks, Jack.
[0:47] SPEAKER_03: Yep, day two.
[0:49] SPEAKER_03: Keep them coming.
[0:50] SPEAKER_04: And the most opinionated man in Trithlon, the son of the eighth place finisher of the 1982 Iron Man World Championships, Dean Harper.
[0:58] SPEAKER_04: And speaking of dads, he's also the man who calls Morgan Pearson his daddy Greg Harper.
[1:04] SPEAKER_02: That's a good one, Jack.
[1:05] SPEAKER_02: Uh, thanks for having me.
[1:06] SPEAKER_02: And you know, Apo and Morgan swam the other day, and uh Apo was giving me a bunch of tips.
[1:10] SPEAKER_02: So uh shout out, shout out to Abo for that.
[1:13] SPEAKER_04: You're welcome.
[1:14] SPEAKER_04: But today, it's not just the boys.
[1:16] SPEAKER_04: No, today we are also joined by one of the pre-eminent voices in Trithlon, a world champion, an Olympic medalist for Ireland, someone who is the perfect blend of knowing more about the current crop of women racing Kona than just about anyone on this planet and loving some Triton-related banter.
[1:33] SPEAKER_04: Yes, that's right.
[1:34] SPEAKER_04: It's the one and only the great Vicky Holland.
[1:39] SPEAKER_01: Thank you, thank you.
[1:40] SPEAKER_01: I mean, I was gonna say it's an honor to be here, but Jack, come on, we've got to go into how bad your geography is.
[1:48] SPEAKER_01: I mean, we we spoke about this earlier today.
[1:51] SPEAKER_01: Said you can't keep getting wrong where everyone's from in Great Britain.
[1:56] SPEAKER_01: You cannot confuse David McNamy's accent with being Welsh.
[1:59] SPEAKER_01: I just don't know how that's possible.
[2:02] SPEAKER_01: Do we need do we need a geography lesson on what is what in the UK?
[2:07] SPEAKER_01: Come on.
[2:07] SPEAKER_01: And the fact that you don't leave Europe just because you leave the EU.
[2:11] SPEAKER_01: We're not in a different continent now, guys.
[2:14] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, we did uh we did step in that one a little bit, didn't we, last uh for the Nice series?
[2:19] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, the the the genuine confusion had me howling as I listened to you guys.
[2:24] SPEAKER_01: But yes, no, we we uh left the EU.
[2:28] SPEAKER_01: Let's not get political about it.
[2:30] SPEAKER_01: Terrible decision, but let's not.
[2:32] SPEAKER_01: Um, and we did not actually move continents.
[2:36] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, well, that's what we learnt when we did the daily pods in in Nice, Vicky.
[2:40] SPEAKER_04: We learnt that uh Great Britain is actually still connected to the rest of Europe.
[2:44] SPEAKER_04: Apo, Greg, and myself, we all thought that it actually split off and was just floating in the in the ocean by the way.
[2:50] SPEAKER_01: We're trying to move closer to Hawaii, but it's not really gone very well so far.
[2:54] SPEAKER_04: Uh and yes, Vicky's also not from Ireland, not an Ireland Olympic medallist.
[2:59] SPEAKER_04: She is uh yeah, unfortunately, a Brit.
[3:02] SPEAKER_04: From England.
[3:02] SPEAKER_04: What part of England are you from?
[3:04] SPEAKER_04: You're from near near Leeds?
[3:05] SPEAKER_01: No, I'm not.
[3:06] SPEAKER_01: Um, I live in Leeds, so you got that bit right, but I'm from Gloucestershire, the southwest.
[3:14] SPEAKER_01: Near Wales.
[3:15] SPEAKER_01: That's where Wales is, down on that side, okay?
[3:17] SPEAKER_01: On the left.
[3:18] SPEAKER_01: The bit that sticks out on the left, that's Wales.
[3:20] SPEAKER_01: Scotland on top, England the rest of it.
[3:23] SPEAKER_04: All right, geography chat aside, it was I could keep talking about Great Britain, okay.
[3:26] SPEAKER_04: It's just it's fascinating conversation, but we've got business to attend to.
[3:31] SPEAKER_04: Let's start like we did in the Nice Daily Podcast.
[3:34] SPEAKER_04: It's day two, so we've had one podcast come out already.
[3:37] SPEAKER_04: If you haven't listened to that, highly recommend you go back and listen to that and listen to them in order.
[3:41] SPEAKER_04: But it's meant that people were able to comment on the Spotify from yesterday's episode.
[3:46] SPEAKER_04: And just like Nice, we're gonna read out our favorite comments or the most interesting comments, or if someone was just, you know, not afraid to jump off the fence and give an opinion.
[3:55] SPEAKER_04: I'll start us.
[3:56] SPEAKER_04: Gerbs or Gerbs20 says, and I think this is directed at you, Apo, how is Kat supposed to be the best Iron Man athlete when Laura beat her the last couple of times they faced each other, including an Iron Man World Championship win, by the way?
[4:11] SPEAKER_04: Momentum can't be the answer as Laura has won her last three full distance races: Nice, Hamburg, and Roth.
[4:17] SPEAKER_04: Can someone explain that to me?
[4:20] SPEAKER_03: I mean, you make good points, Gerbs, but um and I mean you can make an argument for either one.
[4:27] SPEAKER_03: I just think that Kat races more.
[4:29] SPEAKER_03: She's kind of she puts herself out there a little bit more, she's in the forefront of everybody's mind.
[4:35] SPEAKER_03: She goes for the pro series, she won it last year.
[4:38] SPEAKER_03: I just think Laura is a great Iron Man athlete.
[4:41] SPEAKER_03: She's very selective about her races, and she doesn't race as often as Kat.
[4:44] SPEAKER_03: And I think because Kat races so much, she puts herself out there in everyone's minds.
[4:50] SPEAKER_03: And I think that's where my opinion about Kat being the best Iron Man athlete comes from.
[4:55] SPEAKER_03: Um but yeah, you're not wrong.
[4:57] SPEAKER_03: Laura has beaten her uh the last few times they've raced, but uh I still think Kat might have the edge.
[5:03] SPEAKER_03: Alright, I've got a couple.
[5:04] SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna lump these two together.
[5:06] SPEAKER_03: Frankie Hester says, Did Apo just spend the whole podcast off the fence?
[5:11] SPEAKER_03: And Paul Hillier says Apo's opinions are like buses in the UK.
[5:16] SPEAKER_03: You spend months waiting for one and then a bunch of them roll by at once.
[5:20] SPEAKER_03: So I mean it's taken a while, but I've blossomed, guys.
[5:23] SPEAKER_03: I think um, you know, I started off a little bit tentative, just putting my toes in the cold water, but now I'm fully submerged, I'm off the fence, got to give the people what they want.
[5:32] SPEAKER_04: I thought it was good yesterday, Apo, how you kind of jumped off the fence and said Taylor's not in the in the big X conversation.
[5:39] SPEAKER_04: And then I expected when we did the interview with her that you might be a bit nicer, but you're actually, you know, giving her some shit about swim squad and you're like you fully just backed your opinion.
[5:48] SPEAKER_04: You never just like in my for most people in that situation when Taylor jumps on the interview, they'd be like, Oh, Taylor, you're the best, you know, you're the greatest person alive.
[5:56] SPEAKER_04: Because they're trying to make up for just you know saying she's not gonna win the race on the weekend 45 minutes earlier.
[6:01] SPEAKER_04: But no, you jumped off the fence, you committed to it.
[6:03] SPEAKER_04: It was great to see.
[6:04] SPEAKER_02: We love to see the growth.
[6:06] SPEAKER_02: All right.
[6:06] SPEAKER_02: Uh Philip Nicholas says, I would love to hear Benjamin Zorgnotti's opinion on the woman race.
[6:13] SPEAKER_02: That's an opinion I want as well.
[6:15] SPEAKER_02: He's a legend, and maybe we'll have to get uh get an opinion from him.
[6:18] SPEAKER_02: Jack, your appointment on that.
[6:20] SPEAKER_02: What's what's the good word?
[6:21] SPEAKER_04: What about a group vote?
[6:22] SPEAKER_04: Like we just all go through and say yay or nay.
[6:24] SPEAKER_04: Do we get Benjamin Zorgnotti on the podcast one day this week?
[6:27] SPEAKER_04: Do you want to start us, Greg?
[6:28] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm gonna go nay.
[6:30] SPEAKER_02: I feel like someone has to say uh no, so I'm gonna say that.
[6:34] SPEAKER_02: Vicky?
[6:35] SPEAKER_01: I'm also with a no.
[6:37] SPEAKER_01: I want I want women's opinions this week, please, guys.
[6:39] SPEAKER_01: Come on.
[6:40] SPEAKER_01: You're you're a male heavy podcast.
[6:41] SPEAKER_01: I'm an artist, and I want I want the women.
[6:44] SPEAKER_03: I mean, yeah, as as much as we love Benjamin Zorg Naughty, I think Yeah.
[6:49] SPEAKER_03: I think we've got to get the women on.
[6:50] SPEAKER_03: It's the women's time to shine.
[6:52] SPEAKER_03: We gotta we've got to bring in more female voices, like we have Vicky on today.
[6:56] SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, we are a male dominant podcast, so I think more women's voices is needed.
[7:00] SPEAKER_04: Okay, so that's a nay from AppO.
[7:02] SPEAKER_04: That's three nays.
[7:03] SPEAKER_04: I'm a huge yay.
[7:05] SPEAKER_04: Anything Benjamin Zorg Naughty, I'm in.
[7:07] SPEAKER_04: So Ben, sorry about those three.
[7:09] SPEAKER_04: I I can't control it.
[7:10] SPEAKER_04: I'm outvoted three to one.
[7:11] SPEAKER_01: All right, it's my turn.
[7:13] SPEAKER_01: So Josh Spencer asks if the Iron Man World Championships were a pairs race where the pair had to stay together and work together all race, who would you take?
[7:24] SPEAKER_01: Laura and Kat or Taylor and Lucy?
[7:29] SPEAKER_01: Now I've thought about this probably far too much, and I'm not entirely sure.
[7:36] SPEAKER_01: So I've got there's two ways of going this for me.
[7:40] SPEAKER_01: The first one is that so far Taylor's run in a marathon isn't yet proven, and that's the one possible weak link in any of in the pair situation.
[7:52] SPEAKER_01: So that's my why I'm kind of shifting towards Kat and Laura.
[7:57] SPEAKER_01: But then on the flip side, can Kat and Laura work together?
[8:00] SPEAKER_01: Because I don't think there's much love loss there.
[8:03] SPEAKER_01: So I agree.
[8:04] SPEAKER_01: You know, that's that's why I'm I'm I'm caught in the balance, guys, and I'm gonna pass it over to you and sit sit on Apo's fence.
[8:11] SPEAKER_03: I mean, surely these two um, like Laura and Kat and Taylor and Lucy, I reckon behind the scenes they're actually probably already talking to each other.
[8:20] SPEAKER_03: I bet Taylor and Lucy are having some discussions about how they can maximize their advantage to Laura and Kat.
[8:27] SPEAKER_03: And Laura and Kat, while they do have a rivalry, and I think it is respectful, but I think you're right, Vicky.
[8:33] SPEAKER_03: I don't think Yeah, I I think they're rivals, but not on the friendliest of terms.
[8:40] SPEAKER_03: So, but it wouldn't surprise me if they have a little word to each other on the start line and say, you know, if we're in a bike group together, let's work together, try and reel in Taylor and Lucy.
[8:48] SPEAKER_03: And I think Taylor and Lucy are having that same conversation.
[8:51] SPEAKER_03: We want to maximize the advantage to those faster runners.
[8:55] SPEAKER_03: Um so yeah, I mean, but it in this hypothetical situation, I'd probably pick Laura and Kat for the win.
[9:01] SPEAKER_02: I'm going opposite for sure.
[9:02] SPEAKER_02: I mean, I'm going Taylor and Lucy.
[9:04] SPEAKER_02: I mean, Taylor's bike is the strongest thing in the race, right?
[9:08] SPEAKER_02: And they can maximize their time spent on the bike, her and Lucy doing it together.
[9:12] SPEAKER_02: Like Laura and Kat working together on the run, it's like it's not you're not gaining an advantage.
[9:17] SPEAKER_02: Taylor and Lucy can swap turns in the swim, there's draft advantages, they can swap turns on the bike, there's draft advantages.
[9:22] SPEAKER_02: I think them being solo out in the front in front of the race would be just the best tandem working together uh that you could possibly have.
[9:30] SPEAKER_04: I had questions like do they have to stay at 12 meters on the bike or are they allowed to just, you know, are they allowed to be on each other's wheel the whole time?
[9:38] SPEAKER_04: Because I I think if they have to follow the rules but stay together, I think that Laura and Kat win.
[9:44] SPEAKER_04: But I think if they don't have to follow the rules and they can just sit on each other's wheel like it, you know, like you're going out for a ride on a Sunday uh afternoon in the sun in Great Britain, then I think that Taylor and Lucer win and win quite comfortably as well.
[9:57] SPEAKER_04: I think their their swim and bike is just probably better to the point where they they have 10 to 15 minutes on on Laura and Kat.
[10:04] SPEAKER_04: And I think Vicky makes a good point.
[10:06] SPEAKER_04: Would Kat actually want to ride with Laura for four hours?
[10:10] SPEAKER_04: Like there'd be no conversation, I don't think.
[10:12] SPEAKER_04: I don't think they love each other.
[10:13] SPEAKER_04: Whereas Taylor and Lucy, I feel like there'd be a bit of positive momentum throughout that ride, and like Taylor would be saying funny stuff and Lucy would be like singing songs and stuff.
[10:21] SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I think uh I think probably Taylor and Lucy just the edge for me.
[10:26] SPEAKER_02: Alright.
[10:27] SPEAKER_02: Uh Dallas Jared says, What's it like to be on Taylor's list, Greg?
[10:32] SPEAKER_02: I mean, I think if Taylor's thinking about you, it's a it's a good thing.
[10:35] SPEAKER_02: So I'm I'm happy, happy to be on that list, you know.
[10:40] SPEAKER_03: Gavin McGregor says the only thing mortal hydration fuels is regret.
[10:46] SPEAKER_03: And I don't have any personal experience with mortal hydration.
[10:50] SPEAKER_03: I have never I've raced more triflons than I can count, and Mortal Hydration has been the sponsor of Iron Man Races for ages.
[10:58] SPEAKER_03: I've never had a sip of mortal, I've always just avoided it at every aid station.
[11:02] SPEAKER_03: I just grab the coke and the water and just never even think about mortal.
[11:05] SPEAKER_03: So I can't comment on how it tastes.
[11:08] SPEAKER_03: Um, but Gavin McGregor does not enjoy it.
[11:11] SPEAKER_04: Why do you avoid it, Apple?
[11:13] SPEAKER_03: Well, I just feel I don't need it.
[11:14] SPEAKER_03: You know, I've got my gels in my pocket, I grab Coke and water, and that's pretty much all I need.
[11:19] SPEAKER_03: I mean, I've never I've never thought that, oh, I need to grab this mortal because it's gonna pick me out of this hole that I've dug myself in, you know.
[11:28] SPEAKER_03: I think I think Coca-Cola does that better than anything besides precision.
[11:32] SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
[11:33] SPEAKER_04: Revisiting Greg's list from yesterday, Mortal Hydration, the more I think about it, they have so much to lose this weekend, I reckon.
[11:40] SPEAKER_04: Like if the if the porta bodies are just completely full on the run, oh Mortal Hydration's gonna cop it.
[11:46] SPEAKER_04: Um Lewis Williams says just simply pretender.
[11:50] SPEAKER_04: And I can only assume it was probably directed at you, Apo.
[11:53] SPEAKER_02: Um what about that Taylor, our guest?
[11:56] SPEAKER_04: I don't think it's Taylor.
[11:58] SPEAKER_04: Imagine if we oh, I didn't even consider that because she's just such a contender in my eye.
[12:02] SPEAKER_04: Do you think that Lewis was calling Taylor a pretender, Greg?
[12:04] SPEAKER_02: I mean, Apo did.
[12:07] SPEAKER_02: I don't regret it.
[12:11] SPEAKER_01: Okay, okay, next one.
[12:13] SPEAKER_01: Uh, we've got Tompa.
[12:16] SPEAKER_01: Lots of P's in that.
[12:17] SPEAKER_01: Tompa says Taylor might not have had the best year, but let's not forget that Kona is a very non-technical bike course, which is where Taylor shines.
[12:26] SPEAKER_01: I also have niggling doubts that Lucy's middle distance form is too good and is therefore not going to translate to Iron Man.
[12:34] SPEAKER_01: So I don't know.
[12:35] SPEAKER_01: Was there any questions in that, but just statements?
[12:39] SPEAKER_01: Um, I think they're probably right.
[12:41] SPEAKER_01: There's no doubting that Taylor is gonna be brilliant on this bike course.
[12:45] SPEAKER_01: She's probably gonna be better than she was when she was there two years ago.
[12:49] SPEAKER_01: And as for Lucy, she has been incredibly good over the middle distance.
[12:53] SPEAKER_01: Her races in the T100 recently have been outstanding.
[12:57] SPEAKER_01: But do you doubt the Lucy Charles Barkley team?
[13:00] SPEAKER_01: I mean, it's a brave person who does.
[13:02] SPEAKER_02: I mean, don't you think a good 70.3 means you're gonna do a decent Iron Man?
[13:06] SPEAKER_02: Like what?
[13:06] SPEAKER_02: Your threshold's good, like you're feeling strong.
[13:08] SPEAKER_02: Like to say that it's like, oh, I'm in 70.3 shape or Iron Man shape.
[13:13] SPEAKER_02: But I feel like Jack always says, oh, if you're in half marathon shape, you're not in marathon shape.
[13:17] SPEAKER_02: So I don't know, I feel like they're actually not they're similar and different, of course, but if you're doing well in a four-hour race, you're probably gonna do pretty good in an eight-hour race as well.
[13:25] SPEAKER_04: I don't think you can compare running to triathlon, though.
[13:28] SPEAKER_04: So in in the running world, forever, there's like this rule of thumb that if you're running a good half marathon close to a marathon, you're probably not gonna do well.
[13:35] SPEAKER_04: But that's a two and a half, you know, kind of hour race versus a one-hour and 15-minute race, which physiologically is much more different than a four-hour race compared to an eight-hour race.
[13:46] SPEAKER_04: Like a four-hour race and an eight-hour race, physiologically, very, very similar.
[13:51] SPEAKER_04: So, in my opinion, if you're in shape over the 70.3, it probably is gonna translate fairly well to the Iron Man, particularly if you have experience.
[13:59] SPEAKER_04: So I've said it before on the podcast.
[14:01] SPEAKER_04: I think Lucy being in good T100 and 70.3 shape is a very good sign.
[14:06] SPEAKER_04: I don't I don't hold the same doubt that Tompa does.
[14:09] SPEAKER_02: All right, uh, Julian, our uh loyal Patreon, Patreon subscriber, says, We will will we have a silly 15-person pack like the men's race last year?
[14:20] SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna throw it to Vicky right away.
[14:22] SPEAKER_01: I'm shaking my head, aren't I?
[14:24] SPEAKER_01: I I just don't see any way that's gonna happen.
[14:26] SPEAKER_01: The women's race just gets blown apart so early on with the likes of Lucy, even though she's probably gonna take Taylor and maybe one or two others with her.
[14:35] SPEAKER_01: It's never, it's never gonna be a 15-person pack.
[14:37] SPEAKER_01: I just don't see that happening.
[14:39] SPEAKER_04: I'm with you, Vicky.
[14:40] SPEAKER_04: Not to the same degree as last year, that kind of worked into Patrick Langer's favour.
[14:43] SPEAKER_04: Like, I don't see a world where Laura Phillip can sit behind 10 to 15 people all day and and you know just be taken to the victory like Patrick Langer was.
[14:51] SPEAKER_04: I think the women's racing, just by nature, gets torn apart.
[14:54] SPEAKER_04: Middle distance, T100, Iron Man races, they they tend to become a battle of the fittest person wins.
[15:01] SPEAKER_04: Um King OGC says, I think Taylor Nib has the makings of a great coach in 15 years' time.
[15:08] SPEAKER_04: What's your thoughts?
[15:10] SPEAKER_04: Now, King, I thought a lot about this when I read your comment because it's interesting.
[15:14] SPEAKER_04: I think in many ways, yes.
[15:16] SPEAKER_04: Like if Taylor likes you, she can be very empathetic, very understanding.
[15:21] SPEAKER_04: She loves having in-depth conversations, she knows a lot about the sport, she's very, very, very intelligent.
[15:28] SPEAKER_04: That's the positive.
[15:29] SPEAKER_04: But on the other side of things, I haven't met many more people who are more savage than Taylor Nib.
[15:35] SPEAKER_04: Like, if Taylor Nib thinks something about you and it's not positive, she's not afraid to tell you.
[15:41] SPEAKER_04: And as a coach, sometimes you have to walk this fine line of like telling someone the truth and maybe just like little subtle lies to keep them, you know, mentally together.
[15:51] SPEAKER_04: Whereas Taylor Nib, sometimes she might say something that if you're just on the edge of cracking mentally, will completely tip you over the edge.
[15:58] SPEAKER_04: So, yes, if she works on that over the next 15 years, could be a great coach.
[16:03] SPEAKER_04: But if not, I think she'll be like Brett Sutton.
[16:06] SPEAKER_04: She'll work very well for some people and really poorly for other people.
[16:11] SPEAKER_03: I think before she um becomes a coach, she needs to work out the correct uh swimming zones for that easy swim that we did last week.
[16:18] SPEAKER_02: She's obviously cracked Apple mentally already, so he's he's not biased.
[16:22] SPEAKER_02: He's very biased in this situation.
[16:25] SPEAKER_04: Uh moving on to our our next topic, the hoala swim.
[16:30] SPEAKER_04: I've never known how to say that, and I've heard many people say it differently.
[16:33] SPEAKER_04: Vicky, do you know how to pr pronounce it?
[16:35] SPEAKER_04: The hoala swim?
[16:36] SPEAKER_01: Absolutely not.
[16:38] SPEAKER_01: No.
[16:39] SPEAKER_02: Hoala.
[16:40] SPEAKER_04: Ho voila.
[16:41] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, I was.
[16:42] SPEAKER_02: You just pronounce every letter in Hawaiian.
[16:45] SPEAKER_04: Ho voila.
[16:45] SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
[16:46] SPEAKER_04: So anyway, the hoala swim was on yesterday, and I had some thoughts.
[16:50] SPEAKER_04: So, firstly, Lucy dominated it.
[16:52] SPEAKER_04: She was just fully bossing it.
[16:54] SPEAKER_04: She big dogged everyone on the start line.
[16:56] SPEAKER_04: It felt like uh like a personal Lucy Charles Barclay photo shoot and like videography session.
[17:02] SPEAKER_04: It literally, to me, looked like she was Beyonce or Taylor Swift, and everyone else was like her backup dancers in a film clip.
[17:10] SPEAKER_04: She was like in the all-white swim skin, and every other lady behind her was in a black or blue swim skin.
[17:16] SPEAKER_04: Like she literally just had the biggest main character energy I've ever seen.
[17:20] SPEAKER_04: And we talk about the Norwegian mind games.
[17:22] SPEAKER_04: I'm not sure that there were mind games on play here from Lucy, but there was just this like classic dog park situation where there was kind of like the athletes were the dogs in the dog park, and it was like this oh, let's let's just see what happens here, who establishes dominance, what's the dominance hierarchy?
[17:40] SPEAKER_04: And to me, Lucy was the big dog in the park, and everyone else just got into line.
[17:46] SPEAKER_04: Uh, some results from that swim, some notable results.
[17:49] SPEAKER_04: So Lucy won it, Steph Clutterback was 55 seconds back, Hannah Berry was 59 back, Marta Sanchez one minute, Solvig Lofseth and Regan Holyoke were 103 back, Lisa Perderer was 112 back, Marjolaine Pierre was 250 back, Kat Matthews was 256 back, Jackie Herring 301, Alice Alberts 302, Tamra Jewett 502, Penny Slater 522, Daniella Lewis 725, and Rebecca Anderbury was 916.
[18:19] SPEAKER_04: What are your guys' thoughts on everything to do with this swim?
[18:22] SPEAKER_04: Should we read anything into it?
[18:23] SPEAKER_04: Was everyone racing?
[18:25] SPEAKER_04: Were was it likely that some people stopped and did like a session or just took it easy?
[18:29] SPEAKER_04: What do we think about all of this?
[18:30] SPEAKER_03: It's hard to know, right?
[18:32] SPEAKER_03: Um a lot of people probably swim half the swim hard at race pace and then cruise in at the end.
[18:40] SPEAKER_03: Like all these people you mentioned, we're not sure if they were going as hard as they could for a uh for the whole the whole time.
[18:48] SPEAKER_03: I'm sure Lucy did have a bit of a, you know, she likes to win this race.
[18:52] SPEAKER_03: She's won it every time she's done it.
[18:55] SPEAKER_03: Um interesting.
[18:57] SPEAKER_03: I think um Tamara Dewitt only being five minutes back, I think that is quite interesting because the swim for her has been a bit of a weakness.
[19:06] SPEAKER_03: And to only be five minutes back from Lucy, who is so utterly dominant in the swim, yeah, I think that's a pretty good swim for her.
[19:13] SPEAKER_03: That just stood out for me.
[19:14] SPEAKER_03: Cat Matthews at 256, I think, is also a pretty reasonable deficit as well.
[19:19] SPEAKER_03: Um, yeah, I mean we can look into it and take some things, but yeah, without knowing how hard everybody was swimming for the whole the whole swim, I don't think we can make judgments on it.
[19:30] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, well, keep in mind it was like a 36, 37 minute swim for Lucy.
[19:34] SPEAKER_02: So it's essentially it was I know, right?
[19:39] SPEAKER_02: I was I had to look at the results.
[19:40] SPEAKER_02: So essentially three minutes becomes five, five becomes seven and a half, essentially.
[19:45] SPEAKER_02: So it's like a two-thirds type of swim.
[19:47] SPEAKER_02: So yeah, I'm really uh I'm really curious to see if uh Taylor can hang with her or maybe a couple others uh in in the race.
[19:53] SPEAKER_02: But I think it's clear that she she wants to go out there and say, hey, guess what?
[19:57] SPEAKER_02: You're not hanging with me.
[19:58] SPEAKER_02: I'm I'm gonna dominate this race from the start.
[20:00] SPEAKER_01: Well, if there was ever gonna be something that's Lucy's bag, it's this swim, right?
[20:04] SPEAKER_01: I mean, it it's her ultimate strength, and she's such an all-round athlete now.
[20:08] SPEAKER_01: She's got three really great strengths, but her swim is of course what we knew her for first, and there's no way she wasn't gonna go and win this swim.
[20:17] SPEAKER_01: But on top of that, she's a defending Kona champ.
[20:21] SPEAKER_01: So there's a lot there, I think, in that last year was such a disappointment.
[20:25] SPEAKER_01: She nearly got to the start line, she didn't quite get there.
[20:29] SPEAKER_01: She's had some great kind of redemption races, if you like, this year.
[20:32] SPEAKER_01: I think she's raced six times this year and she's won four of them.
[20:35] SPEAKER_01: She's only been off the podium once all year.
[20:38] SPEAKER_01: She's obviously in great shape, she's in great form.
[20:41] SPEAKER_01: The white suit to me just said, Hey, this is my day, my race, I'm the queen, come get me.
[20:47] SPEAKER_01: But you've got to also look at her history in Kona.
[20:50] SPEAKER_01: She's raced there five times as a professional.
[20:53] SPEAKER_01: She's come second four times and won it once.
[20:56] SPEAKER_01: She's got the most outstanding pedigree and record on the island.
[21:00] SPEAKER_01: She obviously is very comfortable there, very happy there.
[21:04] SPEAKER_01: And yeah, there was a very, very distinctive and probably very well-earned main character energy there.
[21:10] SPEAKER_04: Vicky, do you think that Lucy went into that going, I'm gonna make a statement here, like I'm gonna make this all about me.
[21:18] SPEAKER_04: I'm gonna make sure everybody knows how good I am, how confident I am.
[21:22] SPEAKER_04: Or is it just a coincidence that she was in the white suit, everyone else was in a dark colour suit, that she was in the middle of the pack, she led everyone into the water, she won it by so much.
[21:32] SPEAKER_04: Like, is that all just coincidence or was it a statement?
[21:36] SPEAKER_01: Probably a little bit of both, Jack, to be honest.
[21:38] SPEAKER_01: I mean, I don't know whether she actually asked for the white suit or whether that's her sponsors have just decided, you're our star girl, we're putting you in white, everyone's gonna know exactly where you are, everyone can see you.
[21:50] SPEAKER_01: Because if I was her sponsor, I think, yeah, of course, I'd put her in something that stands out because she is Lucy Charles Barclay.
[21:57] SPEAKER_01: Um, I think so there's a there's an element.
[22:00] SPEAKER_01: Of the other athletes deferring to her as well, like as they sort of shuffled their way into the water at the start.
[22:06] SPEAKER_01: I think they were told they weren't allowed to run, weren't they?
[22:08] SPEAKER_01: So they sort of um shuffled their way in.
[22:11] SPEAKER_01: She's right at the front, and they're kind of almost like, well, obviously after you, Lucy.
[22:16] SPEAKER_01: Um, I don't know whether we'll see quite such polite behaviour come race day on Saturday.
[22:23] SPEAKER_01: But yeah, there's she's got an aura about her.
[22:25] SPEAKER_01: She's got an aura about her anyway.
[22:27] SPEAKER_01: But when it's a race like this that's literally built for just the swim, it's it's Lucy's race.
[22:32] SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
[22:32] SPEAKER_04: Huge Regina George energy for those mean girls.
[22:35] SPEAKER_01: Regina George, mean girls, yeah.
[22:37] SPEAKER_01: Like that, Jack.
[22:38] SPEAKER_01: Like it a lot.
[22:39] SPEAKER_00: Yeah.
[22:39] SPEAKER_04: That's what it just was full Regina George when I saw it.
[22:43] SPEAKER_04: Uh, but without the like getting hit by the bus thing, hopefully.
[22:46] SPEAKER_04: Uh point.
[22:48] SPEAKER_04: Don't want that to happen out on the Queen K.
[22:51] SPEAKER_04: Um, Vicky, one more question from me to you.
[22:53] SPEAKER_04: Kat Matthews, three minutes back, like Greg talked about, it's a shorter swim.
[22:58] SPEAKER_04: Do you think that Kat probably stopped a couple of times throughout the swim, like didn't take it fully seriously?
[23:04] SPEAKER_04: Or would you have expected her just to go as fast as she could?
[23:08] SPEAKER_04: And in both hypotheticals, let's say hypothetically she did go as fast as she could, would she be concerned now about how big that gap is?
[23:15] SPEAKER_04: And if she did kind of just take it easier, would she be doing that to kind of make sure that Lucy doesn't know where she is relative to her and maybe play her own kind of mind games?
[23:25] SPEAKER_01: Okay, so firstly, I think the character that Kat is, she probably went pretty solid.
[23:32] SPEAKER_01: Like I don't think she went there to swim backstroke and chill out.
[23:36] SPEAKER_01: I think there was probably an element of let's see where I'm at.
[23:39] SPEAKER_01: I think her swim has improved.
[23:41] SPEAKER_01: And I think just under three minutes down is an improvement for her and where she's been in in previous years.
[23:48] SPEAKER_01: Um, the other thing I would say as well is that what I think was most interesting was there was a lot of people, a big bunch of people at around about a minute.
[23:58] SPEAKER_01: And in that bunch of people were some other big contenders, for example, Solve Loved Seth.
[24:03] SPEAKER_01: I didn't think she'd be quite that high up.
[24:06] SPEAKER_01: Her coming out the water a significant amount in front of Kat, I think plays could be very interesting for race day.
[24:14] SPEAKER_04: I thought the same thing.
[24:15] SPEAKER_04: I thought the big takeaway was the main character film clip, Taylor Swift energy from Lucy Charles Barclay.
[24:21] SPEAKER_04: And then I thought the next biggest takeaway was that Solvig Lovseth and Lisa Perder were a minute behind her.
[24:26] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, Lisa Pertera as well.
[24:28] SPEAKER_04: And there's no way that Lucy didn't swim it pretty hard.
[24:31] SPEAKER_04: Like she she definitely had a crack almost the whole time, from what I could tell.
[24:36] SPEAKER_04: And for those two women to only be a minute behind her, I mean, let's go back to the the big like three, four conversation from yesterday.
[24:44] SPEAKER_04: In my mind now, it is the big five, if not six.
[24:46] SPEAKER_04: I'm adding Solvig Lofseth into it a hundred percent, and I'm on the like precipice of adding Lisa Pertera after what I saw at this swim that maybe you don't have to take it fully seriously, but I'm telling you, those two women, they're dangerous this weekend.
[25:01] SPEAKER_02: They're dangerous.
[25:02] SPEAKER_02: I bet Lucy just went hard at the start, got a gap, and was like, for sure.
[25:06] SPEAKER_02: I don't know.
[25:07] SPEAKER_02: That's how I see it happening.
[25:08] SPEAKER_02: Like, I would know, you know, when you get out there and get that gap, you just you just chill.
[25:11] SPEAKER_02: No, I'm just kidding, I'm not in the class of Lucy, but it was just like a fun event.
[25:16] SPEAKER_02: Um, but yeah, I mean, Sol Solvig swam with Kat at Hamburg, right?
[25:20] SPEAKER_02: Together, but that's two minutes, right?
[25:22] SPEAKER_02: So, and then speaking to Vicky's point about you know, Kat giving it her all, that is that might be a big takeaway.
[25:29] SPEAKER_02: Other than that, yeah, remains to be seen.
[25:31] SPEAKER_02: But uh I I still think Lucy is gonna come out, you know, in that same, you know, six minutes ahead of of the cat and the Laura's out there and and and you know, possibly even Solvig, but you know, if she can with a little more gas at the start, and maybe she can't quite hang in that group, right?
[25:49] SPEAKER_02: But we'll see.
[25:52] SPEAKER_04: If you're training for any triathlon or running event, you should 1000% start using precision fuel and hydration as your training and race day nutrition.
[26:01] SPEAKER_04: Their best products, in my opinion, are their gels.
[26:03] SPEAKER_04: I love the PF90, PF30, and PF30 caffeine gels.
[26:07] SPEAKER_04: And I also love their flow gel for the bike.
[26:09] SPEAKER_04: All four of those are just amazing products.
[26:11] SPEAKER_04: The thing that separates precision gels from other brands is that they taste great.
[26:15] SPEAKER_04: They just have this really simple, sugary flavor that you don't get sick of.
[26:18] SPEAKER_04: Um, and in combination with that, they also have this texture that goes down really, really easily and doesn't leave you feeling gross and nauseous after taking it.
[26:26] SPEAKER_04: And I know for me, they're kind of two of the biggest factors that I've struggled with in other gels, but with precision, just a really simple, nice, sweet flavor, and they go down so so easily.
[26:36] SPEAKER_04: Um they've also nailed their packaging, which can be a bit of a bugbear of mine, but they've made a really um practical and simple packaging that that doesn't spill out and get everywhere in their smaller gels.
[26:47] SPEAKER_04: And the PF90 literally has an easy-to-use on-race day screw top.
[26:51] SPEAKER_04: And in training, the PF90 is just absolutely incredible if you're doing a long run or if you're out on the bike.
[26:56] SPEAKER_04: Like there's no better gel uh on the market than the PF90, in my opinion.
[27:00] SPEAKER_04: It's just the best.
[27:01] SPEAKER_04: Um, they also make electrolyte tablets that have become a staple in the Triton world.
[27:06] SPEAKER_04: So join the bandwagon, start using precision for your training and racing, and to get a discount code when you do, um, either use the code TTH25, which gets you 15% off the first time you use it, or click the link in this episode description if you want a bigger discount code.
[27:22] SPEAKER_04: Um, it's over on the triton our Patreon.
[27:24] SPEAKER_04: So the link to the Patreon is in the description of this episode.
[27:27] SPEAKER_04: And there's a 20% off every time you shop at Precision Link if you do sign up for Patreon that you can take advantage of.
[27:35] SPEAKER_01: Okay, so as the newbie on the podcast for today, I've been tasked with creating a list of the top five athletes who could become household triathlon names after this weekend.
[27:48] SPEAKER_01: Now, I struggled a little bit because as a triathlon nerd, I sort of think everybody's already a household name, but I've had to go about it as people who are real Iron Man specific household names and real superstars in the triathlon world.
[28:04] SPEAKER_01: So I'm gonna go in reverse order.
[28:06] SPEAKER_01: My number five, and the reason I chose this person who is Hannah Berry is because she's had two races in two years at Ironman World Champs.
[28:14] SPEAKER_01: So she's finished 11th and then 10th.
[28:17] SPEAKER_01: I think she's been really solid all year.
[28:19] SPEAKER_01: I think she is an intelligent trainer.
[28:22] SPEAKER_01: I think she knows how to prepare for big races, and she was really, really good in the hot and humid conditions in Singapore earlier this year.
[28:30] SPEAKER_01: I think it's gonna take probably a marathon PB to do it, but she's a solid swimmer, a solid biker, a solid runner, and just a little bit elevated from any of those three.
[28:39] SPEAKER_01: Could could sneak her maybe into the top five, but definitely into the top ten.
[28:44] SPEAKER_01: And that could get her a little bit more well known, shall we say, in the uh travel and world.
[28:49] SPEAKER_03: Hannah Berry's quietly had a really good year.
[28:52] SPEAKER_03: Um, she's raced, she's on the T100 tour, and she's finished like in that top top handful.
[28:59] SPEAKER_03: Um, I don't have a results off the top of my head, but I feel like she's had a couple of like more six and six.
[29:03] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, yeah.
[29:04] SPEAKER_03: I was gonna say uh three top sixes, which is great, but it just it kind of hasn't really got the kudos it's deserved, I think.
[29:12] SPEAKER_03: And she's always been better, I believe, over the Iron Man distance and that T100.
[29:17] SPEAKER_03: I think the Iron Man suits her better.
[29:18] SPEAKER_03: So I think it's a great shout, Vicky.
[29:20] SPEAKER_01: Number four, and this depends a lot on how good the Iron Man coverage is.
[29:26] SPEAKER_01: But my number four is Rebecca Anderbury, and I have chosen her because I think she has been laying down some really good bike legs and could be one of those athletes that absolutely tears through this course.
[29:41] SPEAKER_01: She's young, I think she's only about 25.
[29:44] SPEAKER_01: She's only been a professional for a couple of years, came through the uh Zwift Academy, I think, back in sort of 2022.
[29:50] SPEAKER_01: But the last couple of races she's done, she's been the fastest on the bike.
[29:55] SPEAKER_01: She was only just off Cat Matthews, I think, by about 30 seconds in maybe Swansea earlier this year.
[30:02] SPEAKER_01: So I'm not suggesting that I think she's gonna have a day that catapults her into that top five.
[30:09] SPEAKER_01: But what I do think is if the coverage is good and we see some of these players coming through from behind, we might get a bit of, she might get a bit of TV time and she might therefore become sort of known as one of these Uber bikers in Traplom.
[30:22] SPEAKER_04: Nine minutes and 16 seconds back in the practice swim, though, Vicky.
[30:25] SPEAKER_04: Does that concern you a little bit?
[30:26] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, it was a bit further than I was hoping, to be honest.
[30:29] SPEAKER_01: I'm hoping she was uh having a cruise because I wrote this list before I realized that.
[30:35] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, she was about six minutes back at the last T100, but like you said, the fastest split.
[30:40] SPEAKER_02: I mean, she outrode Lucy, and you know, Lucy was on a day.
[30:43] SPEAKER_02: So that's a super good shout.
[30:44] SPEAKER_02: And you know, if you set the bike horse record, or you know, maybe we'll see that, or you get close, or you set the fastest time of the day, you you become a household name.
[30:51] SPEAKER_02: So I really, really like that uh shout.
[30:54] SPEAKER_01: All right, number three, I've gone for Tamara Dewitt.
[30:58] SPEAKER_01: Now, she is pretty well known, I think, in the Traathlon world already, but probably not in the Iron Man Trahlon world, which is why I've chosen her.
[31:07] SPEAKER_01: And you guys actually touched upon it in your podcast yesterday, I think.
[31:10] SPEAKER_01: Like she could run 20, maybe 30 minutes into some girls.
[31:15] SPEAKER_01: Like if she runs the way we know she can, the way she showed she could in Lake Placid, she could run from so far down the field and even get herself right up there towards the podium, maybe top five.
[31:28] SPEAKER_01: And if she does something like that and sets that run course alight and sets the run course record, I think all of a sudden she is absolutely a contender any day of the week in the uh in the Iron Man world.
[31:40] SPEAKER_04: Couldn't agree more.
[31:40] SPEAKER_03: Yeah.
[31:41] SPEAKER_03: I think she's the best chance at um breaking the run course record.
[31:44] SPEAKER_03: That 240 in Placid, I think there was only three men or two men that ran quicker than that.
[31:51] SPEAKER_03: Um it's incredible.
[31:53] SPEAKER_03: And that run course is hard and like that's a 237 on a faster marathon course.
[31:58] SPEAKER_03: So I think she could run that mid-240s at Cona.
[32:02] SPEAKER_03: If she limits that loss on the um swim and bike and is within that, you know, if she's 15, 20 minutes down, she could absolutely run into the top five.
[32:12] SPEAKER_01: All right, number two, and these top two are probably going to come as absolutely no surprise to any of you guys.
[32:18] SPEAKER_01: I've gone for Lisa Perterer.
[32:20] SPEAKER_01: Uh she's had, I think, a really good year since she decided to leave short course behind and move up into the middle and long distance racing.
[32:28] SPEAKER_01: She's very good in the heat.
[32:30] SPEAKER_01: She actually qualified at Cosumel late last year, off the back of pure Olympic distance training.
[32:36] SPEAKER_01: She'd been racing for the Olympics just like a couple of months before.
[32:39] SPEAKER_01: I don't think she'd ran even close to marathon distance at that point and got herself qualified.
[32:44] SPEAKER_01: She loves the heat and humidity in general.
[32:47] SPEAKER_01: She was really good in Singapore at the beginning of the year.
[32:50] SPEAKER_01: Her marathon is starting to get better.
[32:51] SPEAKER_01: 255 and Placid again.
[32:53] SPEAKER_01: I mean, that's not a fast run course.
[32:56] SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I think she's someone who could become super well known as just an all-round weapon, really.
[33:03] SPEAKER_01: Come this weekend.
[33:04] SPEAKER_04: Amen.
[33:05] SPEAKER_01: Okay, that brings me back to number one.
[33:07] SPEAKER_01: And again, no surprises here, Solveg Loveseth.
[33:10] SPEAKER_01: I think she is on the cusp of becoming a very well-known name anyway.
[33:14] SPEAKER_01: I think you would be crazy not to put her as a contender for this race.
[33:20] SPEAKER_01: I know we haven't got to that segment yet, Greg.
[33:22] SPEAKER_01: I'll wait enough for you then.
[33:23] SPEAKER_01: Um, toilet, toilet.
[33:26] SPEAKER_01: Oh gosh, no one's gonna see that one coming.
[33:28] SPEAKER_01: Um, but she's firstly, I mean, she's Norwegian.
[33:32] SPEAKER_01: Why why are we doubting anybody at this point who is from Norway after what we saw just a few weeks ago?
[33:39] SPEAKER_01: But she's had the most amazing year since she stepped up to this full distance.
[33:43] SPEAKER_01: The two Iron Man she's done running 246, just I mean, unreal.
[33:48] SPEAKER_01: But there is nothing like doing a doing a result like that, putting out a result like that at the biggest race of all at Kona.
[33:55] SPEAKER_01: And I think if she was to do that, she would be a serious contender for the podium, and if not the top five at the very least.
[34:01] SPEAKER_01: So yeah, I think she could very quickly become a very much household name in Iron Man this weekend.
[34:07] SPEAKER_04: There was like a period of time, Vicky, where people would say like that the Norwegians could produce the boys, but that they weren't producing any world-class females.
[34:15] SPEAKER_04: And I think Solvik Lofseth is the first one, but I actually think there's more coming as well.
[34:19] SPEAKER_04: Like Katrine Christensen in this race, I'm huge on her as well.
[34:23] SPEAKER_04: I think she's really good.
[34:24] SPEAKER_04: Solvik is younger than her, I'm pretty sure.
[34:26] SPEAKER_04: Um, but I think Solvik's gonna lead like a little bit of a Norwegian charge in the women's racing, and I think like it took a little bit to catch up, but the the women like Solvik, who did train with Christian and Gustav and Kasper for so long, they're coming.
[34:39] SPEAKER_04: And I and I've I I was talking to uh Arald Tfaiten the other day, um, and he was telling me about some of these Norwegian women that we don't know about yet, and uh and comparing them to the boys in Christian and Gustav and saying, they're coming, just give give us five years, and the women uh Norwegian triathletes will be just as known.
[34:58] SPEAKER_04: And I'm with you.
[34:58] SPEAKER_04: I think Solvig's going to become a world champion.
[35:00] SPEAKER_04: It's just it's just when, not if.
[35:02] SPEAKER_01: And you know as well that they're gonna have done the right preparations for those for that that course.
[35:07] SPEAKER_01: There's no stone gonna have been left unturned.
[35:09] SPEAKER_01: They're incredibly good at getting heat preparation stuff right.
[35:12] SPEAKER_01: They did it exceptionally well before Tokyo, as we saw there, of course, with with Christian becoming Olympic champion.
[35:18] SPEAKER_01: So even though she's been in Font Remo until relatively recently, you know that they've gonna been doing really specific protocols and she's gonna be ready for the heat and humidity in in Kona.
[35:28] SPEAKER_02: And we know what those specific protocols entail in the Norwegian camp.
[35:32] SPEAKER_04: So No comment.
[35:35] SPEAKER_04: Just to be clear, are you saying that the glove was involved in solving Lof Ces Prep?
[35:40] SPEAKER_02: Whoa, whoa, we don't say the glove word here on the podcast, Jack.
[35:43] SPEAKER_04: Uh Vicky, thank you for bringing that list to the table.
[35:47] SPEAKER_04: Uh, I was also tasked with bringing a list to the table today as well.
[35:51] SPEAKER_04: Apo and Greg got the day off.
[35:53] SPEAKER_04: Mine is potentially a little less serious than Vicky's, but also very serious at the same time.
[35:58] SPEAKER_04: It's the top five money earners this week at the Iron Man World Championships in Kona.
[36:04] SPEAKER_04: And I thought I'd start with a few honourable mentions.
[36:07] SPEAKER_04: I know that the five-time champ Danny Allah Reef is in town.
[36:11] SPEAKER_04: And you know that Danny Ala Reef isn't leaving Europe to fly over to Kona unless she's making some serious bucks on the big island.
[36:19] SPEAKER_04: So Danny Allah Reef will have, you know, what we call caches in Australia, where you go and you do an event and you get handed a bit of a bag full of cash.
[36:28] SPEAKER_04: I also think thefeed.com, they don't miss an opportunity to make money in American triforms.
[36:33] SPEAKER_04: So I don't know how they'll do it, but the uh Matt, the owner, he'll fly into Kona on a helicopter and they will make big bucks as well.
[36:41] SPEAKER_04: I also thought that Forever Living, which are the biggest aloe vera company in the United States, are probably gonna make a lot of money based on all of the Australians and Europeans who are flying into Kona and then realizing, oh shit, I'm sunburnt pre-race.
[36:56] SPEAKER_04: How do I get on top of this so that it doesn't ruin my race?
[36:59] SPEAKER_04: So I think Forever Living are gonna be making a killing as well.
[37:02] SPEAKER_04: And then my last honorable mention is Scott DeRue.
[37:05] SPEAKER_04: I mean, he's the one who's made the decision to get Iron Man back to Kona.
[37:09] SPEAKER_04: There has to be some money on the table for Scott.
[37:11] SPEAKER_04: Uh I don't know in what way, shape, or form, but Scott's making bank.
[37:15] SPEAKER_04: Uh, and here we go.
[37:16] SPEAKER_04: The top five list.
[37:18] SPEAKER_04: So coming in at number five is Kat Matthews.
[37:21] SPEAKER_04: I just think Kat has so many avenues to make money at Kona.
[37:25] SPEAKER_04: She's got the Pro Series money.
[37:27] SPEAKER_04: We know that she's leading the Pro Series, so a good day pretty much guarantees that she's going to win the Pro Series.
[37:32] SPEAKER_04: Back to back, by the way.
[37:34] SPEAKER_04: She's also got sponsorship bonuses, no doubt.
[37:37] SPEAKER_04: She's been targeting this race.
[37:38] SPEAKER_04: She's got a heap of sponsors, and they're good sponsors who tend to pay their athletes pretty well, particularly if they perform on the big stage.
[37:45] SPEAKER_04: So no doubt her contracts with sponsorship bonuses are lofty.
[37:50] SPEAKER_04: The number four big earner on the island this week.
[37:52] SPEAKER_04: Now, this is a guy that maybe you wouldn't have heard of.
[37:55] SPEAKER_04: His name's Roman Arnald.
[37:58] SPEAKER_04: He's Canyon's CEO, right?
[38:00] SPEAKER_04: And for the past four years, Nicholas DeRoss Wallace was Canyon's CEO, but he was uh he stepped down from that about a month ago.
[38:08] SPEAKER_04: I don't know if he stepped down or he got forced to step down.
[38:10] SPEAKER_04: It was one of those press releases that made you think there was a bit going on behind the scenes at Canyon.
[38:15] SPEAKER_04: And then Roman Arnald, he moved into taking the helms of Canyon.
[38:20] SPEAKER_04: And just for some numbers for you guys, there's about 2,500, maybe 3,000 bikes at Kona, and roughly 30 to 35% of them will be Canyon.
[38:30] SPEAKER_04: That's the most by a long way, by the way.
[38:32] SPEAKER_04: So we're looking somewhere in the vicinity of you know eight to ten million dollars worth of Canyon bikes in T1 alone.
[38:40] SPEAKER_04: So we saw some uh some uh foolery at uh T1 at an Iron Man race earlier in the year.
[38:46] SPEAKER_04: Uh security, be on your game, or you're gonna cost Roman.
[38:50] SPEAKER_04: But if security are on their game, then Roman are now he's making a killing this week at Kona.
[38:55] SPEAKER_02: Who's this uh bike sponsor this year?
[38:57] SPEAKER_02: Canyon's not with Iron Man yet, are they?
[39:00] SPEAKER_02: Is it still like full gas?
[39:01] SPEAKER_02: They still pumping that for the for the bike sponsor?
[39:03] SPEAKER_04: The full back, the full gas bike course.
[39:05] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, all right.
[39:06] SPEAKER_02: Shoot.
[39:06] SPEAKER_02: It's full gas, actually.
[39:09] SPEAKER_02: Oh, yeah, they're partnering with RPG.
[39:11] SPEAKER_02: Don't say it wrong.
[39:14] SPEAKER_04: Just uh spoiler alert, full gas did not make the top earners list.
[39:18] SPEAKER_04: Coming in at number three, and this one's no surprise, Lucy Charles Barclay.
[39:23] SPEAKER_04: We just literally talked about the swim.
[39:25] SPEAKER_04: Lucy Charles Barclay's the main main character of Kona this week.
[39:28] SPEAKER_04: Make no mistake about it.
[39:30] SPEAKER_04: If if Lucy Charles Barclay wins, she'll be moving from England to Monaco probably next week.
[39:37] SPEAKER_04: She'll be buying a yacht, she'll be buying a mansion, she'll be avoiding tax because she's gonna make that much money that tax would be a real heavy bill for her.
[39:46] SPEAKER_04: So, yeah, if she wins, um, that little dog of hers back home, whose name I've forgotten, I think it's like Milo or something off the top of my head, it's gonna be living a better life than Vicky, Apo, Greg, and me ever could dream of.
[39:59] SPEAKER_04: So, Lucy Charles Barclay, she's number three.
[40:01] SPEAKER_04: Number two on the big earners list.
[40:04] SPEAKER_04: It's two people.
[40:04] SPEAKER_04: I've gone a combined number two Donald Newhouse and Jesse Dubay.
[40:10] SPEAKER_04: Now, these guys are behind the scenes operators, and I kind of feel bad even saying their name because they're so good at what they do.
[40:17] SPEAKER_04: These are big wig businessmen.
[40:19] SPEAKER_04: Now, they're the owners of Iron Man.
[40:22] SPEAKER_04: Donald Newsom, he's on the advanced side, and Jesse Dubai, he came in and bought part of it.
[40:27] SPEAKER_04: Now, Iron Man, we know what they do, they stream ads like ads are going out of business, they've got big sponsorship deals.
[40:35] SPEAKER_04: VinFast, who knows what they're paying?
[40:36] SPEAKER_04: I don't even know what company they are.
[40:38] SPEAKER_04: Greg thinks they might maybe be thinking about making a car but haven't made one yet.
[40:43] SPEAKER_04: I've got no idea.
[40:44] SPEAKER_04: But I do know that they pay Iron Man a hell of a lot of money.
[40:49] SPEAKER_04: And keep this in mind as well.
[40:51] SPEAKER_04: It's not just the ridiculous amount of ads that are on the stream all day that we're looking forward to, but there's also four to five million in entry fees for Kona this year.
[41:01] SPEAKER_04: Four to five million in entry fees alone.
[41:04] SPEAKER_04: And I don't even think entry fees is how they make most of their money, keep in mind.
[41:07] SPEAKER_04: So Donald Newhouse and Jesse Dubay, these guys are absolutely crushing it.
[41:12] SPEAKER_04: And that brings us to number one on the list of the top five big money earners this week at Kona.
[41:18] SPEAKER_04: Now keep in mind we've had billion-dollar American companies, we've had dogs living better lives than every single person listening, I assume, unless we've got any really rich people listening, in which case, slide into our DMs.
[41:29] SPEAKER_04: Greg can always do with a bit of extra cash.
[41:32] SPEAKER_04: But this person, and I'll just say it, number one is Jan Fredino.
[41:36] SPEAKER_04: Jan Fredino isn't a businessman.
[41:39] SPEAKER_04: He's a businessman.
[41:42] SPEAKER_04: This guy has turned his triathlon career, which was one of the most successful in the history of sport, into something truly special after retiring.
[41:50] SPEAKER_04: He's built businesses from the ground up.
[41:52] SPEAKER_04: He's an investor.
[41:53] SPEAKER_04: He gets in on the ground floor of businesses and helps build them using his profile, his wealth of knowledge in the sport, his connections in the sport.
[42:00] SPEAKER_04: He's just he's a genius when it comes to business.
[42:03] SPEAKER_04: I actually think that this guy, when it's all said and done, will be a better businessman than he ever was a triathlete.
[42:10] SPEAKER_04: And we all know how good a triathlet he was.
[42:12] SPEAKER_04: But you only have to spend a day with this guy at an event to realize wow, this is this is the dream, what this guy's doing.
[42:19] SPEAKER_04: And if he's showing up to a race like Kona, I'm sure there's an element of he just loves being there and it's got great memories.
[42:25] SPEAKER_04: And it, you know, he relives the moments of when he was a three-time champion there, and I'm sure some of the most special moments of his life.
[42:32] SPEAKER_04: But he gets in and he works.
[42:34] SPEAKER_04: He goes to work, he doesn't stop.
[42:36] SPEAKER_04: He goes from this meeting to that meeting to that meeting to this event to that speech.
[42:40] SPEAKER_04: He he literally doesn't stop.
[42:42] SPEAKER_04: And when he does, it's to grab a couple of slices of pizza at the end of the night, which usually is with a business associate.
[42:47] SPEAKER_04: Then he hits the hay, goes to bed, wakes up at 5 a.m., goes for a run or an ocean ocean swim, and then he does it all again.
[42:53] SPEAKER_04: So yeah, number one, no, no question who's earning the most money on the island this week.
[42:58] SPEAKER_04: It's Jarn Fradino.
[43:00] SPEAKER_03: Jack, there's a glaring omission from your list, and I want to give a shout out to the uh Mana Layer chocolate covered um macadamia nuts that are sold in the ABC stores.
[43:11] SPEAKER_03: Those things are flying off the shelves.
[43:13] SPEAKER_03: If you've had those, you know what I'm talking about.
[43:15] SPEAKER_03: Those things they've almost ruined my race because they're so good.
[43:21] SPEAKER_03: I've thought about putting them in my bento box and snacking on those on the way out to Harvey.
[43:26] SPEAKER_02: Fucking melted in five seconds.
[43:31] SPEAKER_04: I'll have to try them next year in Kona when uh we go over and do the daily pods live.
[43:37] SPEAKER_04: I personally think that all triathletes or endurance athletes in general should be taking creatine daily.
[43:43] SPEAKER_04: However, not all creatines are created equal, and in the case of Pillar Performance's creatine monohydrate, it features single origin creepure made in Germany, which is the purest form of creatine monohydrate available on the market.
[43:55] SPEAKER_04: And unlike most brands, it's informed sports certified.
[44:00] SPEAKER_04: So as a triathlete, why should you be taking creatine daily?
[44:03] SPEAKER_04: Well, firstly, energy production.
[44:06] SPEAKER_04: Creatine helps replenish ATP, which is the body's primary energy source.
[44:10] SPEAKER_04: This means higher anaerobic capacity and better overall athletic performance.
[44:15] SPEAKER_04: Enhanced recovery is the second thing.
[44:17] SPEAKER_04: Creatine reduces muscle damage and inflammation while promoting faster glycogen replenishment.
[44:23] SPEAKER_04: This leads to quicker recovery between training sessions and races.
[44:26] SPEAKER_04: It's it's probably, in my opinion, the main reason why you should use it.
[44:30] SPEAKER_04: Just the in hugely enhanced recovery that it leads to.
[44:34] SPEAKER_04: And then thirdly, is the cognitive benefits.
[44:37] SPEAKER_04: Creatine supports brain function, reducing mental fatigue and improving focus throughout endurance events, but also just day-to-day in your life.
[44:44] SPEAKER_04: If you're trying to get up early and train and then go to work and then um look after your family and spend quality time with the people you care about, maybe even train a second time.
[44:53] SPEAKER_04: I mean, you just need to have the cognitive ability to do so.
[44:57] SPEAKER_04: And creatine definitely helps that.
[44:58] SPEAKER_04: So if you would like to try some creatine monohydrate for yourself, which I highly recommend you do, then head to pillarperformance.shop or for North American listeners, listeners, head to thefeed.com and enter the code TTH for 15% off all first purchases.
[45:13] SPEAKER_04: That's code TTH for 15% off all first purchases.
[45:18] SPEAKER_02: All right, Jack.
[45:19] SPEAKER_02: Uh thank you for that segment.
[45:21] SPEAKER_02: Now that we have Vicky on, I'll just mention that Alistair's the goat.
[45:25] SPEAKER_02: She probably agrees.
[45:26] SPEAKER_02: Um, as we called Jan the goat, so I didn't know Alistair was going to the island uh this weekend.
[45:32] SPEAKER_02: But you all know what we're gonna do.
[45:36] SPEAKER_02: Vicky ruined it earlier, and we are going to do contender or pretender Kona edition.
[45:43] SPEAKER_02: Now, we got to change things up a little bit for our Kona Special Edition.
[45:48] SPEAKER_02: Usually go based on an athlete can finish on the podium or not, but we've kind of already been there with our big three, four, and five.
[45:55] SPEAKER_02: So we're gonna call you contender if we think you can finish top five, kind of on your perfect day, and you're a contender, you're a pretender if we don't think you can finish in the top five.
[46:06] SPEAKER_02: So contender, top five, pretender, not in the top five.
[46:10] SPEAKER_02: Now, Vicky, I'm not sure if you're aware of can contender or pretender, but there's only two rules.
[46:16] SPEAKER_02: Don't sit on the fence.
[46:18] SPEAKER_02: And if someone else sits on the fence, you can call them out for sitting on the fence.
[46:23] SPEAKER_02: Now, we'll go Vicky first, then Apo, then Jack, and we'll run through them.
[46:28] SPEAKER_02: Uh, we got are you ready?
[46:29] SPEAKER_01: I'm ready, but I've got a disclaimer to make, so I don't know whether to make it now or after.
[46:33] SPEAKER_04: Make it now.
[46:34] SPEAKER_01: Okay.
[46:35] SPEAKER_01: So my initial instinct was I hate this segment.
[46:39] SPEAKER_01: I'm not doing it.
[46:40] SPEAKER_01: I'm not taking part, and I don't want to offend everyone, and I want to sit on the fence for absolutely everything.
[46:45] SPEAKER_01: And then I thought, no, come on, you can't do that.
[46:48] SPEAKER_01: You've got to go on and you've got to do it properly.
[46:50] SPEAKER_01: So my disclaimer is I think we've already spoken about how there are five girls.
[46:55] SPEAKER_01: Five girls who are at the moment kind of head and shoulders above of what we think they can do.
[47:00] SPEAKER_01: So for me, I've only put anybody as a contender if I think they've got any chance of beating one of those five girls.
[47:07] SPEAKER_01: And I'm not talking about if those five girls have a puncture or they're ill or whatever.
[47:11] SPEAKER_01: They've got to have a blinder to be able to get in that top five.
[47:14] SPEAKER_01: So I've been quite strict, but that's why I've been strict.
[47:17] SPEAKER_01: And I want to tell everyone because I don't want everyone to hate me.
[47:20] SPEAKER_01: So that's why I've made my disclaimer right now.
[47:23] SPEAKER_04: We love it.
[47:24] SPEAKER_04: That's the triumph on our way, Vicky.
[47:26] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, yep.
[47:26] SPEAKER_01: I'm not, I can't, I can't take the hate.
[47:28] SPEAKER_02: We've had people try to get out of the segment before and they've actually been kicked off the podcast.
[47:32] SPEAKER_02: So you will be welcome back now that you are gonna be off the fence and telling us your opinion.
[47:37] SPEAKER_02: All right.
[47:37] SPEAKER_02: First name on the list, Hannah Berry.
[47:39] SPEAKER_01: Contender on a very, very, very, very, very best day.
[47:42] SPEAKER_02: Two, one word, Vicky.
[47:44] SPEAKER_02: One word.
[47:46] unknown: I can't.
[47:47] SPEAKER_02: I've also met Hannah.
[47:48] SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna say contender.
[47:50] SPEAKER_04: Contender for me as well.
[47:52] SPEAKER_02: Uh Contender.
[47:55] SPEAKER_02: Jackie Herring, number two.
[47:57] SPEAKER_01: Pretender.
[47:59] SPEAKER_02: I'm gonna say contender.
[48:01] SPEAKER_04: Pretender.
[48:03] SPEAKER_02: Pretender.
[48:05] SPEAKER_03: Anne Reichman.
[48:07] SPEAKER_01: Pretender.
[48:08] SPEAKER_03: Her swim's not there, pretender.
[48:10] SPEAKER_04: Big dawn contender.
[48:14] SPEAKER_02: Pretender.
[48:15] SPEAKER_02: Jack, you can skip this next one if you want.
[48:17] SPEAKER_02: Penny Slater.
[48:20] SPEAKER_01: Pretender.
[48:21] SPEAKER_01: I refer to my original disclaimer.
[48:23] SPEAKER_01: Pretender.
[48:28] SPEAKER_03: Pretender, yeah.
[48:29] SPEAKER_03: I r I refer to uh Vicky's disclaimer as well.
[48:32] SPEAKER_04: 2024 contender?
[48:34] SPEAKER_04: 2025 pretender.
[48:37] SPEAKER_02: Love that.
[48:38] SPEAKER_02: I'm going pretender.
[48:39] SPEAKER_02: Marta Sanchez.
[48:42] SPEAKER_01: Pretender.
[48:44] SPEAKER_02: Pretender.
[48:46] SPEAKER_04: Uh Pretender.
[48:48] SPEAKER_02: Uh Marta Sanchez?
[48:50] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I'm going pretender.
[48:51] SPEAKER_02: Alright.
[48:52] SPEAKER_02: Next.
[48:53] SPEAKER_02: Lisa Purderer.
[48:54] SPEAKER_01: Contender.
[48:55] SPEAKER_02: Contender, absolutely.
[48:56] SPEAKER_04: Huge contender.
[48:58] SPEAKER_04: Good win, I think.
[48:59] SPEAKER_02: I'll go contender.
[49:01] SPEAKER_02: Katrine Christensen.
[49:03] SPEAKER_01: Pretender.
[49:05] SPEAKER_02: Pretender.
[49:06] SPEAKER_04: Pretender.
[49:08] SPEAKER_02: Pretender.
[49:10] SPEAKER_02: Marjolaine Pierre.
[49:11] SPEAKER_01: I found this one difficult, but Pretender.
[49:15] SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna say contender.
[49:17] SPEAKER_02: Contender.
[49:19] SPEAKER_02: Pretender.
[49:21] SPEAKER_02: Jocelyn McCauley.
[49:24] SPEAKER_01: Again, pretender.
[49:26] SPEAKER_01: I'm being very strict.
[49:28] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, pretender for me, sorry, Jocelyn.
[49:31] SPEAKER_04: One of the all-time contenders.
[49:34] SPEAKER_01: Says coach.
[49:36] SPEAKER_02: Pretender.
[49:38] SPEAKER_02: India Lee.
[49:39] SPEAKER_01: On an all-time day, contender.
[49:42] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, I'm gonna say contender as well.
[49:44] SPEAKER_04: I don't think the conditions suit India, so I'm gonna say pretender.
[49:49] SPEAKER_02: I'm a big India fan.
[49:50] SPEAKER_02: I'm going contender.
[49:52] SPEAKER_02: Alright, Solvig Love Seth.
[49:55] SPEAKER_01: Easiest one you've given us.
[49:57] SPEAKER_01: Absolute contender.
[49:58] SPEAKER_03: Yep.
[49:59] SPEAKER_03: Same contender.
[50:00] SPEAKER_02: Massive contender.
[50:02] SPEAKER_02: Contender.
[50:04] SPEAKER_02: Regan Holyoke.
[50:09] SPEAKER_04: Regan Hol Regan Holyoke.
[50:12] SPEAKER_02: Regan Holyoke.
[50:15] SPEAKER_01: Pretender.
[50:19] SPEAKER_03: I'm gonna say Contender.
[50:20] SPEAKER_04: Oh, Apo, get off it.
[50:24] SPEAKER_03: No, I'm big on I'm big on Regan.
[50:26] SPEAKER_03: This is her this is her uh this is her coming out party.
[50:29] SPEAKER_03: I feel it in my bones.
[50:31] SPEAKER_04: Greg, can we just pause contender or pretender here for a second while I make a tattoo bet with uh our friend Apo.
[50:37] SPEAKER_02: Allowed.
[50:38] SPEAKER_04: Apo, tattoo bet.
[50:40] SPEAKER_04: If Regan finishes inside the top 15, I'll get your name tattooed on me.
[50:46] SPEAKER_04: If she finishes outside the top 15, you get my name tattooed on you.
[50:53] SPEAKER_03: With a little love heart and an arrow pointing through it on the ass cheek.
[51:00] SPEAKER_04: Take the bet.
[51:00] SPEAKER_04: If she's a contender, you're saying she can finish top five.
[51:03] SPEAKER_04: I'm giving you 10 extra places.
[51:05] SPEAKER_03: She'll easily be top 15.
[51:07] SPEAKER_04: Take the bet then.
[51:08] SPEAKER_03: Alright.
[51:09] SPEAKER_03: Bet done.
[51:10] SPEAKER_04: Bet done.
[51:11] SPEAKER_04: Everyone heard that.
[51:12] SPEAKER_04: Hold us to that.
[51:14] SPEAKER_02: Alright, next on the list, Alice Alberts.
[51:18] SPEAKER_01: Again, pretender.
[51:19] SPEAKER_01: Sorry, I'm being really strict on everyone here, but yeah, pretender.
[51:23] SPEAKER_03: I think pretender as well.
[51:26] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, injuries hurt Alice this year.
[51:27] SPEAKER_04: She's just not ready for the race, I don't think.
[51:29] SPEAKER_04: She probably needs like four four more months, and Alice is in different shape, but no.
[51:34] SPEAKER_04: Pretender now.
[51:35] SPEAKER_02: Pretender.
[51:36] SPEAKER_02: Tamara Jewett.
[51:38] SPEAKER_01: Contender.
[51:39] SPEAKER_01: Again, with that run, contender.
[51:41] SPEAKER_02: I think contender.
[51:43] SPEAKER_04: Yeah.
[51:44] SPEAKER_04: Cona and the run go hand in hand.
[51:45] SPEAKER_04: It's a marathon game at the end of the day.
[51:47] SPEAKER_04: She's a she's a contender.
[51:49] SPEAKER_04: Contender.
[51:50] SPEAKER_02: Lottie Wilms.
[51:52] SPEAKER_01: Oh again, I found this one really hard.
[51:54] SPEAKER_01: Uh contender.
[51:58] SPEAKER_03: She's got that watch ready to go.
[52:00] SPEAKER_03: She's a contender.
[52:02] SPEAKER_04: That's a niche triathlon joke.
[52:04] SPEAKER_04: I like that.
[52:04] SPEAKER_04: No.
[52:05] SPEAKER_04: Lottie 2024, contender, but 2025.
[52:08] SPEAKER_04: She left her coach.
[52:10] SPEAKER_04: She went to a new coach.
[52:12] SPEAKER_04: I don't think it's worked.
[52:12] SPEAKER_04: I think she's gotten way, way worse this year.
[52:15] SPEAKER_04: I was so high on Mottie Wilms her whole career, but I don't think I don't think what she's done this year has worked, so pretender for me.
[52:21] SPEAKER_02: I'm going pretender too.
[52:24] SPEAKER_02: Holly Lawrence.
[52:25] SPEAKER_01: I struggle to separate Holly and Indy as what they could possibly do.
[52:31] SPEAKER_01: I think they're quite similar.
[52:33] SPEAKER_01: Holly's only on her second Iron Man.
[52:36] SPEAKER_01: Uh now go on, contender.
[52:39] SPEAKER_01: Do it for the mums, Holly.
[52:41] SPEAKER_03: I think Contender.
[52:43] SPEAKER_02: Yeah, I think contender too.
[52:44] SPEAKER_02: I'm going old school Kona first time.
[52:47] SPEAKER_02: I'm going pretender.
[52:48] SPEAKER_03: Wait, you ripped me on yesterday's episode saying that that logic is flawed and it's out of date, and then you've just gone back on your word.
[52:56] SPEAKER_02: I just said I'm just bringing it in for this one.
[52:58] SPEAKER_02: I'm bringing back in that logic for this one.
[53:01] SPEAKER_04: I did say that, Greg.
[53:02] SPEAKER_02: Alright, contender.
[53:03] SPEAKER_04: You would like to love Gustav 2022, Casper 2025.
[53:08] SPEAKER_02: And Chelsea.
[53:09] SPEAKER_04: And Chelsea 2022.
[53:11] SPEAKER_02: I don't I don't really know what to say.
[53:12] SPEAKER_02: Now, can look, can we talk about Contender Pretender for a second?
[53:15] SPEAKER_02: And in the top five in general.
[53:17] SPEAKER_02: We kind of have that big five we're talking about.
[53:19] SPEAKER_02: How many are gonna make it in the big five?
[53:21] SPEAKER_02: You think three will be in there?
[53:23] SPEAKER_02: Like what the chances of those five being the top five is super small, right?
[53:27] SPEAKER_02: Essentially.
[53:28] SPEAKER_02: Four, what is the likelihood?
[53:30] SPEAKER_02: Three.
[53:31] SPEAKER_02: I feel like it's gonna be three.
[53:32] SPEAKER_02: What do you guys think?
[53:33] SPEAKER_03: Yeah, three.
[53:34] SPEAKER_03: Because you can always bet on someone having a bad day, or a couple of people having a bad day.
[53:40] SPEAKER_03: Um and the islands unforgiving.
[53:42] SPEAKER_03: I think if there is a big five, I think three of them are in the top five.
[53:48] SPEAKER_03: I think if we nail down and actually do what's right and call out it that it as a big three, I think two of them will be in the top three.
[53:56] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, I think, as I said, I had to do contender and pretender as if all those five were gonna be there because you can't guess who's not gonna be there at this point.
[54:07] SPEAKER_01: But I think you're probably right.
[54:09] SPEAKER_01: There's always gonna be someone who has a stinker.
[54:12] SPEAKER_01: I don't think many people have Patrick Langer outside of the top five in Nice.
[54:16] SPEAKER_01: So yeah, you're probably three.
[54:20] SPEAKER_02: Uh are you officially saying that Patrick Lang had a stinker in Nice?
[54:26] SPEAKER_00: He couldn't.
[54:27] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, exactly.
[54:29] SPEAKER_01: Gotta have a stinker when you're sick.
[54:31] SPEAKER_01: I mean, come on.
[54:32] SPEAKER_01: I think for the the defending champ, ninth was not what was on his bingo card.
[54:40] SPEAKER_04: Yeah, he he wasn't sleeping well the the few days before as well.
[54:43] SPEAKER_04: And I think he ate some bad Chinese food and his dog, you know, there was some stuff going on with his dog.
[54:47] SPEAKER_04: There was there was lots of reasons why Patrick didn't win.
[54:50] SPEAKER_04: Um Kim Morehouse left an interesting comment on the Spotify for yesterday's episode that the podiums just never go how you expect and predict at the world championships.
[54:59] SPEAKER_04: And basically she said that whatever you think it's gonna be, like if you predict your podium, take one of them and they'll finish on it, the other two won't.
[55:07] SPEAKER_04: And I thought it was a really interesting theory to the point where when we do predictions at the end of the week, I'm gonna try it.
[55:13] SPEAKER_04: So I'm gonna like write down my podium and then I'm gonna take two of them out and just add two others in and see if it gets me closer to being able to predict the podium.
[55:22] SPEAKER_04: Because like I didn't predict Casper to win at Nice.
[55:25] SPEAKER_04: I had him at about fifth or sixth.
[55:27] SPEAKER_04: So yeah, I think it's I think it's really hard to pick.
[55:30] SPEAKER_02: Okay, and our last name on Contender Pretender, 2016 to 2018, Vicky Holland.
[55:38] SPEAKER_01: Okay, I take it back.
[55:39] SPEAKER_01: This is the easiest one of the day.
[55:42] SPEAKER_01: Absolute pretender, not a Scooby-Doo's chance in hell.
[55:48] SPEAKER_01: Is 2016 to 2018 Vicky Holland, even at her absolute peak, making any inroads on that top five in Kona.
[55:56] SPEAKER_01: So pretender.
[55:59] SPEAKER_03: Come on, Vicky, you're too harsh on yourself.
[56:01] SPEAKER_03: Couple of years on the TT bike, absolute contender in my eyes.
[56:05] SPEAKER_01: Thanks, Apo.
[56:06] SPEAKER_02: Well, we're ending contender, pretender with a bang.
[56:09] SPEAKER_02: That was a good one, and that officially wraps it up.
[56:11] SPEAKER_02: Maybe we'll get a different edition down in the week.
[56:14] SPEAKER_02: Who knows?
[56:16] SPEAKER_04: Two contender or pretenders in a week is just asking to get in trouble, though.
[56:20] SPEAKER_04: Uh, but I think that's a great way to wrap up the show.
[56:22] SPEAKER_04: What better way to do it than contender or pretender?
[56:25] SPEAKER_04: Greg, Apo, thanks so much for joining us as always, boys.
[56:28] SPEAKER_04: We'll be back tomorrow.
[56:29] SPEAKER_04: And Vicky, an absolute honor to have you on.
[56:31] SPEAKER_04: And we'd love to have you on again later in the week, but there's a very high chance you might be in hospital and not actually be able to make the podcast.
[56:40] SPEAKER_04: But if you haven't popped out a baby in the next couple of days, please, you know, if we send you a message, come back on because you are by far the most knowledgeable person on this podcast, and you definitely lift the IQ of the podcast.
[56:52] SPEAKER_04: It's really, it's actually a real relief to have someone smart on the podcast once.
[56:56] SPEAKER_01: Jack, flattery will get you everywhere.
[56:58] SPEAKER_01: And you know what we need to hope for is that I do pop the baby out in the next couple of days, and then I can come back on Friday.
[57:06] SPEAKER_04: If you do the triathlon hour daily pods from the hospital bed, that would be goated.
[57:13] SPEAKER_01: I'm not making any promises, Jack.
[57:16] SPEAKER_01: But it would be cool.
[57:18] SPEAKER_04: No, but seriously, Vicky, thanks so much for coming on.
[57:20] SPEAKER_04: You're just a wealth of knowledge.
[57:22] SPEAKER_04: You're you're one of the best commentators we have in this sport.
[57:24] SPEAKER_04: And I don't mean like commentating races, I mean your opinions on races, your knowledge, your deep level of knowledge in the sport is almost unmatched, in my opinion.
[57:32] SPEAKER_04: So yeah, huge honor to have you on.
[57:34] SPEAKER_04: So thank you for coming on.
[57:35] SPEAKER_01: Oh, thanks, Vicky.
[57:36] SPEAKER_01: Jack.
[57:36] SPEAKER_01: Guys, it's been a pleasure.
[57:38] SPEAKER_01: Thanks for having me.
[57:39] SPEAKER_04: And just two housekeeping things before we we leave, guys.
[57:42] SPEAKER_04: Um, one, I've got a meeting tomorrow about the trifle in hour pretender t-shirts.
[57:47] SPEAKER_04: The meeting's all about how do we get the shipping costs down.
[57:50] SPEAKER_04: Now, Greg tells me it might be because of Donald Trump's tariffs.
[57:53] SPEAKER_04: I'm not across US politics, but it costs like a billion dollars to post them into America.
[57:58] SPEAKER_04: And it makes these 40 euro shirts cost like 150 bucks.
[58:02] SPEAKER_04: So I've got a meeting on that tomorrow.
[58:04] SPEAKER_04: And if that goes well, then I'm gonna come on the podcast tomorrow and announce that the pretender shirts have gone live.
[58:10] SPEAKER_04: So keep an eye out tomorrow on the podcast.
[58:13] SPEAKER_04: I'm about, I'm about 80% certain that we'll release them after tomorrow's episode.
[58:18] SPEAKER_04: Uh, and the last thing, like I said, uh off the top of the show, leave your spot, leave, leave your comments on Spotify.
[58:24] SPEAKER_04: We want to read them off the top of the show.
[58:26] SPEAKER_04: The more there are, the better they are, the better it makes the show.
[58:29] SPEAKER_04: We want these daily pods to be like a thing where you're engaging with us.
[58:33] SPEAKER_04: We want you to be involved, kind of like talk back radio.
[58:35] SPEAKER_04: It just makes it way more fun for us.
[58:37] SPEAKER_04: And and like seven days of podcasts with just our opinion gets pretty old.
[58:41] SPEAKER_04: So hearing all of your opinions makes them so much better.
[58:45] SPEAKER_04: Uh, and that's it.
[58:46] SPEAKER_04: Vicky, Sam, Greg, daily pods.
[58:48] SPEAKER_04: Day two done.
[58:49] SPEAKER_04: Let's do it all again tomorrow for day three.
[58:51] SPEAKER_01: Woo! Thanks, Jack.
[58:52] SPEAKER_01: Yeah, cheers, see ya.
