Jessica Leahy (model, journalist and all-round fashion powerhouse) joins Host Leigh Campbell to spill the tea on Australian Fashion Week 2025! From polka dots and leather gloves to Nagnata's bury-in-your-garden denim (yes, really!), they break down the runway highlights and what's actually worth adding to your wardrobe. Spoiler alert: cherry red is having a major moment. Drowning in outfit indecision? Jessica's genius hack: choose accessories as the base of all your weekly fits to avoid fashion decision fatigue. [0:10] Speaker 1: You're listening to Amma Mia podcast.
[0:13] Speaker 2: Mamma Mia acknowledges the traditional owners of land and waters
[0:17] Speaker 2: that this podcast is recorded on. Whoever said orange is
[0:22] Speaker 2: a new pink with seriously.
[0:23] Speaker 1: Disturbed laurels for spraying groundbreaking?
[0:26] Speaker 2: Oh my gosh, you have.
[0:27] Speaker 1: To do it. You live for fashion.
[0:31] Speaker 2: Hello and welcome to Nothing to Wear, the podcast that
[0:34] Speaker 2: solves fashion problems and levels up your wardrobe. I'm Lee Campbell.
[0:37] Speaker 2: In every week, I chat to an expert who helps
[0:40] Speaker 2: us work out how to get more out of the
[0:42] Speaker 2: clothes we already own and tells us exactly what is
[0:45] Speaker 2: and isn't worth adding to our wardrobe. Today, I am
[0:48] Speaker 2: thrilled to be joined by someone who truly understands Australian
[0:52] Speaker 2: fashion from every angle. She's a journalist, a model, a presenter,
[0:56] Speaker 2: an author and a fellow podcast host with her iconic,
[1:00] Speaker 2: soft and curious pod, I'm talking about none other than
[1:04] Speaker 2: Nothing to Wear fath Jessica Lay. She has fifteen years
[1:08] Speaker 2: experience in the fashion industries. She's worked with iconic Australian
[1:12] Speaker 2: and international brands like R. M. Williams, Bonds, Ralph Lauren
[1:16] Speaker 2: and Calvin Klein. No big deal, but I particularly love
[1:20] Speaker 2: Jess for her unwavering commitment to positive body image, empowerment
[1:24] Speaker 2: and inclusivity, both in media and in fashion. And today
[1:29] Speaker 2: she's helping me dissect Australian Fashion Week, which happened last week,
[1:32] Speaker 2: and we're going to break down how we can adapt
[1:34] Speaker 2: some of the off the runway styles and trends into
[1:37] Speaker 2: our everyday wardrobes and basically just talk about what fashion
[1:40] Speaker 2: week is, why it happens, how it works, and what
[1:43] Speaker 2: goes on behind the scenes. Hi, friend Jess, Hello, how
[1:46] Speaker 2: are you so good? Have you lost your voice? After
[1:49] Speaker 2: fashion Week? There's been a lot of chit chatting, I
[1:51] Speaker 2: have to say, a lot of small talk, a lot
[1:53] Speaker 2: of small talk. Well I got to bump into a
[1:55] Speaker 2: lot last week. But I've known you for a million years,
[1:58] Speaker 2: Cosmo days and then you're always being dragged into MoMA
[2:02] Speaker 2: Mia for many things.
[2:03] Speaker 1: Which I'm always happy about.
[2:04] Speaker 2: Actually, we love it. Last time you were on here,
[2:07] Speaker 2: you we talked dopamine dressing.
[2:09] Speaker 1: We did emotional dress sets. It still rings true for
[2:12] Speaker 1: me and I've felt it a lot this past week.
[2:15] Speaker 2: I know, right, it's like anything goes so that's quite exciting.
[2:18] Speaker 2: But before we get into fashion week, I ask returning
[2:20] Speaker 2: guests two questions. Do you have the biggest fashion splurge
[2:25] Speaker 2: or impulse purchase that comes to mind?
[2:28] Speaker 1: Something that just pops in which I don't regret at all,
[2:31] Speaker 1: But it was definitely like aUI when I.
[2:33] Speaker 2: Bought it for the wallet?
[2:35] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, I got a Gucci Jackie bag and that
[2:37] Speaker 1: was something I bought myself. And how long ago? I
[2:41] Speaker 1: mean it's I think it was like two years ago.
[2:45] Speaker 2: And you use her a lot, not as much as
[2:48] Speaker 2: I should.
[2:48] Speaker 1: But I am getting a little bit more liberal, and
[2:50] Speaker 1: also I am trying to be like where your stuff?
[2:53] Speaker 2: Yeah, you know what I mean, every day it's on
[2:55] Speaker 2: an occasion, Yeah, don't.
[2:56] Speaker 1: Let it just sit in the calico at the top
[2:57] Speaker 1: of the that's the.
[2:59] Speaker 2: Spending so important and you've worked so hard and then
[3:02] Speaker 2: you're like, I don't want to use it.
[3:03] Speaker 1: But it's like and she's so pretty, she goes with everything.
[3:06] Speaker 1: She's just black and white. Do you have a style
[3:08] Speaker 1: muse currently Pamela Anderson, Yes, obsessed.
[3:12] Speaker 2: Oh my god, I love that so much. Yeah.
[3:15] Speaker 1: I just think it's almost just because she's kind of
[3:17] Speaker 1: returned to herself. I always thought she was the hottest,
[3:20] Speaker 1: like from back in the day like Baywatch days incredible,
[3:23] Speaker 1: like her and calm and like I love sexy girls
[3:26] Speaker 1: me so like that was just so beautiful. But then
[3:28] Speaker 1: now she's just stepped into this phase where she is
[3:32] Speaker 1: being herself with her own human skin.
[3:35] Speaker 2: Yes, And I feel like it's great because what we
[3:37] Speaker 2: expected of her was to be a sexy girl with
[3:40] Speaker 2: the eye makeup and the you know, the whole beauty look.
[3:44] Speaker 2: But she's still just radiating you know, sexuality and just confidence,
[3:49] Speaker 2: but she doesn't have to do the whole hair and makeup.
[3:51] Speaker 1: That's just what we're coming to in this day and age,
[3:53] Speaker 1: like we're getting into that little pointy place where I
[3:55] Speaker 1: think things are getting a little bit hunger games like irl, Yes,
[3:59] Speaker 1: and it's just nice to see someone just pulling back
[4:02] Speaker 1: from that and just being like, I'm actually me do
[4:04] Speaker 1: what I want, and I'm going to kind of look
[4:06] Speaker 1: how I want to look and actually look like myself anyway.
[4:09] Speaker 1: It's so beautiful to see someone just like, yeah, kind
[4:11] Speaker 1: of embracing what they actually look like. I love that,
[4:14] Speaker 1: all right.
[4:15] Speaker 2: I want to talk Fashion Week. Most people don't know
[4:17] Speaker 2: exactly when I say most people, you know, it's an
[4:19] Speaker 2: industry event. So the lay person who doesn't work in
[4:22] Speaker 2: fashion doesn't really understand what it's about. So can you
[4:25] Speaker 2: give us a quick rundown? You know, what are we
[4:28] Speaker 2: seeing and why and when are the normal people going
[4:30] Speaker 2: to see it?
[4:31] Speaker 1: Well? I think what we're seeing is we're seeing what
[4:34] Speaker 1: the designers are bringing out, obviously for their next collections.
[4:37] Speaker 1: And usually it's always about you know, the buyers getting
[4:40] Speaker 1: to have a look and then they can purchase, you know,
[4:43] Speaker 1: in order whatever is because not everything on the runway
[4:46] Speaker 1: gets made, right, So that's why some things look kind
[4:49] Speaker 1: of crazy in outlandish and people like as if anyone's
[4:51] Speaker 1: ever going to wear that, And some of those pieces
[4:53] Speaker 1: are only just to show off like the aesthetic of
[4:57] Speaker 1: the brand, yes, and then other pieces are obviously ready
[5:00] Speaker 1: to wear and like you know, if someone comes in
[5:03] Speaker 1: there like we want that top, that's skirt, blah blah blah.
[5:05] Speaker 1: But that's what gets made. Yeah, So that's what fashion
[5:07] Speaker 1: week is about. It's about showcasing what they're acting they
[5:10] Speaker 1: want to create for the next season.
[5:13] Speaker 2: Yes, so it's a bit of a crystal ball for
[5:15] Speaker 2: I guess you and I I mean you model and
[5:18] Speaker 2: to ten, I saw your running around last week going backstage,
[5:20] Speaker 2: front stage, all over the place and for us, you know,
[5:23] Speaker 2: as media, it's for us to know what's coming up,
[5:26] Speaker 2: and like you say, buyers in Australia but also internationally
[5:29] Speaker 2: going okay, that brand's great, and yeah, let's okay. I've
[5:32] Speaker 2: seen you know, a lot more a lot of Sheer again,
[5:35] Speaker 2: so you know, she is coming as a trend overall,
[5:37] Speaker 2: so kind of everyone kind of getting across what's coming up.
[5:40] Speaker 1: And I think a lot of people don't realize there
[5:41] Speaker 1: are some Australian brands that do really well overseas, yes,
[5:44] Speaker 1: more than you know in Australia, like you know, even
[5:49] Speaker 1: in like Arab markets and things like that, because it's
[5:51] Speaker 1: that modesty dressing. And I think we've got some beautiful brands,
[5:54] Speaker 1: Like I know that Zimmerman did really well overseas before
[5:57] Speaker 1: they kind of did well in Australia. Yes, yeah, yeah,
[5:59] Speaker 1: they did do well, but it was just like you know,
[6:02] Speaker 1: that kind of modesty dressing even when.
[6:04] Speaker 2: You travel to if I ever walked past to Zimmerman
[6:06] Speaker 2: or I saw Alimes when I was overseas, and I'm like,
[6:10] Speaker 2: I'm so proud, and you forget that, you know, our
[6:12] Speaker 2: beautiful brands that you know, are big names.
[6:14] Speaker 1: But they're global totally. I mean, Nagnat are huge globally.
[6:18] Speaker 2: So cool. I love that we're going to talk about
[6:20] Speaker 2: that in a little bit. How many years or how
[6:22] Speaker 2: long have you been attending or been involved in Fashion Week?
[6:26] Speaker 1: I feel like I've been involved since like my late
[6:28] Speaker 1: teen since I started modeling.
[6:29] Speaker 2: Okay, so you're not giving me a time frame like
[6:32] Speaker 2: fifteen years. Yeah, yeah, so about that.
[6:36] Speaker 1: But I feel like this year is the funnest year
[6:39] Speaker 1: for me because I feel like finally I have friends there,
[6:42] Speaker 1: Like it feels a bit familiar and I feel less.
[6:45] Speaker 1: You know, it's just like anywhere you feel like you
[6:47] Speaker 1: finally built up a bit more of a community. Yes,
[6:50] Speaker 1: so it's a lot more fun now to attend rather
[6:52] Speaker 1: than like kind of daunting. It's more like I'm going
[6:54] Speaker 1: to go see what my friends have made.
[6:55] Speaker 2: I wanted to ask you that because I think I've
[6:58] Speaker 2: had some dms on Instagram saying, oh my gosh, is
[7:00] Speaker 2: it intimidating? Is everyone wearing head to toe designer? So
[7:03] Speaker 2: do you find it intimidating or I guess not now.
[7:07] Speaker 2: But it's an interesting question to ask because personally, I
[7:10] Speaker 2: love Australian fashion. I like the fashion shows, but I
[7:15] Speaker 2: do find Fashion Week as an attendee and I'm not
[7:18] Speaker 2: even modeling or I don't know, I just turn up
[7:20] Speaker 2: quite overwhelming. Do you think it's clicking, like for the
[7:24] Speaker 2: outside person, do you think that that reputation or that
[7:28] Speaker 2: stereotype is true.
[7:29] Speaker 1: I think everything I would feel intimidated if I walked into, like,
[7:33] Speaker 1: you know, an accounting.
[7:34] Speaker 2: Meeting for your first time.
[7:36] Speaker 1: Yeah, and I don't know what I'm talking about, and
[7:39] Speaker 1: I don't have colleagues or peers in that room. I
[7:41] Speaker 1: think everything is intimidating if it's not you, if you're
[7:45] Speaker 1: still getting to know, yeah, the colleagues and peers that
[7:48] Speaker 1: you have. I feel like, now after all these years,
[7:50] Speaker 1: I have friends who I like genuinely are my mates. Yeah,
[7:54] Speaker 1: which is so nice, but obviously yeah, Like I think
[7:57] Speaker 1: people always want to poopo it as something that's a
[7:59] Speaker 1: little bit superficial, you know. It's like people do want
[8:02] Speaker 1: to make clothes feel superficial a lot.
[8:04] Speaker 2: Yes.
[8:05] Speaker 1: And the thing is is I always say to that, like,
[8:07] Speaker 1: well wear something you're uncomfortable and see how much it matters.
[8:11] Speaker 1: So you know what I mean, Like it's a choice
[8:13] Speaker 1: that you're making every day, and yeah, these are the
[8:15] Speaker 1: people that are bringing you, yeah, you know the trends
[8:18] Speaker 1: and yeah, and often they're pretty like cookie and weird
[8:21] Speaker 1: and like they were the outsiders. So it's like they
[8:23] Speaker 1: finally kind of found their people in their place. I agree.
[8:26] Speaker 2: I've just loved watching the diversity of what people are
[8:29] Speaker 2: wearing and the expression. You know, this is art. You know,
[8:32] Speaker 2: you wouldn't say an art gallery or you know, an
[8:34] Speaker 2: art exhibition is superficial, but this is people wearing art
[8:37] Speaker 2: or creating art, and it's just on people's bodies instead
[8:39] Speaker 2: of on a campus.
[8:40] Speaker 1: Yeah. And I think once you know the history of
[8:42] Speaker 1: fashion and things like that, it's it's more interesting. You know.
[8:45] Speaker 1: You can see like when I say the Jackie bag,
[8:46] Speaker 1: you know what I'm talking? Yes, do you know what
[8:48] Speaker 1: I mean? Like it's Jackie, Oh, it's that bag? You
[8:51] Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. It's like there is history We're
[8:53] Speaker 1: woven into people's clothes.
[8:55] Speaker 2: And in Australia too. You know, I was chatting to
[8:58] Speaker 2: someone last week and we were talking about, you know,
[8:59] Speaker 2: when Sassen Bibe was Sassin Byde and the Rats leggings
[9:02] Speaker 2: and you know that looking we were looking back at
[9:04] Speaker 2: old age photos from you know, ten years ago and
[9:07] Speaker 2: that sort of sequin skirt. You know, Australian fashion does
[9:11] Speaker 2: have that heritage and it's quite nice to see that
[9:13] Speaker 2: evolve over the decades.
[9:15] Speaker 1: Totally, and I think you only get a perspective of
[9:17] Speaker 1: time when you've lived through trends.
[9:28] Speaker 2: Talk to me about what you loved last week, standout trends, looks, shows, attendees, anything, well.
[9:35] Speaker 1: I obviously the week started with Colors and Patty, which
[9:38] Speaker 1: was beautiful and I think was super fitting. And the
[9:42] Speaker 1: Carriageworks showroom, which, even though the Carla show was in
[9:46] Speaker 1: Circular Key, the Carriagework showroom has been called the Colors
[9:49] Speaker 1: and Patty Room, so I think that's a really nice
[9:52] Speaker 1: nod beautiful with that legacy. The show was very Carlor like,
[9:57] Speaker 1: you know, it was those silhouettes, lots of beautiful like
[10:01] Speaker 1: feminine shapes, like flouncy. Rachel Rutt was wearing this beautiful
[10:07] Speaker 1: polka dot dress which was so floating and gorgeous, like
[10:11] Speaker 1: a kind of hole to neck, and then she had
[10:14] Speaker 1: elbow length leather gloves on.
[10:16] Speaker 2: Amazing.
[10:17] Speaker 1: I loved it. I was like, that is sick, you know,
[10:20] Speaker 1: like that that kind of contrast because I love being girly,
[10:23] Speaker 1: but I also think that I love it to kind
[10:25] Speaker 1: of like, you know, mess it up a little bit
[10:27] Speaker 1: as well. So that was gorgeous.
[10:29] Speaker 2: And I think also for us getting dressed at home,
[10:31] Speaker 2: it's kind of like the wrong shoe theory, but you
[10:33] Speaker 2: can apply it to anything in new ordrobe and like
[10:36] Speaker 2: technically if it doesn't go, that's kind of great. It
[10:38] Speaker 2: doesn't have to be your matchy match or just try it.
[10:41] Speaker 1: I think something has to draw the eye to go.
[10:44] Speaker 1: Do I like that or not? Like it's got to
[10:46] Speaker 1: you don't want to walk in the room and have
[10:47] Speaker 1: no one have kind of an opinion on your outfit.
[10:49] Speaker 1: I feel anyway, I want.
[10:50] Speaker 2: Someone's somewhere you're going if you go into your accounting meetings.
[10:53] Speaker 2: We spoke earlier, Yeah.
[10:55] Speaker 1: But yes, and then I think another standout show for
[10:57] Speaker 1: me was obviously.
[10:58] Speaker 2: Nagnata Yes amazing.
[11:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, Laura and Hannah they is that their first show
[11:03] Speaker 1: that was their first on schedule show, yeah, which they
[11:05] Speaker 1: haven't shown on schedule before, and it was really big
[11:08] Speaker 1: for them because they launched Denim. Yes, it was super excited.
[11:11] Speaker 2: I loved it because if for listeners that don't know.
[11:13] Speaker 2: It's kind of an active way brand, but I'd more
[11:16] Speaker 2: say a lifestyle brand.
[11:18] Speaker 1: You know.
[11:18] Speaker 2: I have a bunch of their shorts and I just
[11:20] Speaker 2: kind of wear them in summer with thongs and an
[11:23] Speaker 2: oversized shirt around to do chores. And I mean, I'm
[11:26] Speaker 2: not really an exercise person, but it was all beautifully
[11:29] Speaker 2: tonal and I loved it.
[11:32] Speaker 1: Makething else that you love? Oh what else should I love?
[11:35] Speaker 1: I mean, I feel like my outfit today is hands
[11:39] Speaker 1: and gradel. Yes, I loved.
[11:40] Speaker 2: I was saying to you before we started filming. I
[11:42] Speaker 2: love velvet, but I if I wear it, I look
[11:45] Speaker 2: like I'm going to be in a pantomime for school.
[11:47] Speaker 2: But you can just do velvet so well, it's such
[11:50] Speaker 2: a lux fabric.
[11:52] Speaker 1: I love. I do love like a silky piece, like
[11:56] Speaker 1: you know, silk laundry.
[11:57] Speaker 2: Yeah, I Laundry, which is another Aussie brand in the show.
[12:00] Speaker 1: I think you'd have talked about that before, yea, Yeah,
[12:02] Speaker 1: I love, I love silky. I love it's great to
[12:04] Speaker 1: fly in velvet.
[12:06] Speaker 2: Yeah, it is all right, first class. Actually, I do
[12:10] Speaker 2: have like wide legged, black oversized pants, elastic waists that
[12:13] Speaker 2: a velvet that's genius. I know they go for traxit pants.
[12:16] Speaker 2: They feel like shaks.
[12:18] Speaker 1: Feel like trackies, but you don't feel like, oh, I'm
[12:20] Speaker 1: just walking around in my trackies all the time. Yeah, no,
[12:23] Speaker 1: it's good.
[12:24] Speaker 2: I personally loved Negali. It was the most beautiful, like
[12:28] Speaker 2: the prints were. They're all indigenous prints and they were
[12:32] Speaker 2: just so beautifully crafted with the garments that it just
[12:37] Speaker 2: felt fresh and different but not sort of trying to
[12:41] Speaker 2: make a statement and out there there were some beautiful
[12:43] Speaker 2: browns and Beija's. As you can tell, I'm a neutral girl.
[12:45] Speaker 2: I just thought that was so beautiful. And for me,
[12:48] Speaker 2: I always loved bian Caspenda, which is interesting that you
[12:50] Speaker 2: mentioned Krla Biancaspender is her daughter. I think she's my
[12:55] Speaker 2: favorite Australian fancy designer. It's all that sort of classic
[12:59] Speaker 2: tailoring but a bit of structure. There was some beautiful
[13:01] Speaker 2: sort of billowing like almost strapless tops, and then these
[13:05] Speaker 2: amazing satin pants that are structured at the top but
[13:08] Speaker 2: then kind of billowing at the bottom. And she introduced
[13:10] Speaker 2: swim which I thought was quite cool. It was a
[13:12] Speaker 2: very yeah, it was very hers, so not I wouldn't
[13:15] Speaker 2: say conservative, but very sort of classic. I have so
[13:19] Speaker 2: many of her pieces that I've bought many years ago
[13:21] Speaker 2: and they still look brand new. And so while it's
[13:23] Speaker 2: expensive price point and they you know, they're classic enough
[13:26] Speaker 2: to keep wearing, but like you say, a little bit
[13:28] Speaker 2: structur all different that every time I wear it, people
[13:30] Speaker 2: will be like, where's that from. I'm like Biancaspander and
[13:32] Speaker 2: they got to look for it. I'm like, oh no, it's
[13:33] Speaker 2: like eight years old. Thoughts on fashion Week and size,
[13:38] Speaker 2: inclusivity and diversity, you know, all encompassing. I've saw a
[13:42] Speaker 2: lot of I hate to say older, but I saw
[13:45] Speaker 2: a really nice representation of women that weren't twenty. What
[13:49] Speaker 2: are your thoughts because you were front stage and backstage, Yeah, you.
[13:52] Speaker 1: Know, I feel like they were going to always have
[13:54] Speaker 1: this conversation about like diversity when it comes to you know,
[13:57] Speaker 1: size and race and age and gender and all that
[14:00] Speaker 1: kind of stuff. Obviously my answer is always the same
[14:03] Speaker 1: year after, could.
[14:04] Speaker 2: Be better, could be better, could be better.
[14:06] Speaker 1: But at the same time, it's less token ISTI now
[14:11] Speaker 1: like we actually know the model's names. You know, those curvier.
[14:14] Speaker 2: Girls, you know, they're not just quickly finding someone on
[14:17] Speaker 2: social media as a ring in.
[14:18] Speaker 1: I think I think it's like, yeah, we've seen girls
[14:21] Speaker 1: year after year on that runway, which is really nice
[14:24] Speaker 1: because it's that's what it's all about. It's about making
[14:26] Speaker 1: someone a personality, someone recognizable. It's not just about finding
[14:30] Speaker 1: you know, the yeah, feeling a brief and just recitling.
[14:34] Speaker 2: Because then everyone else is yeah.
[14:36] Speaker 1: So it's it's I feel like, I feel like it
[14:38] Speaker 1: could be better in terms of everything, but the age,
[14:42] Speaker 1: the age I love, and I just think it's just
[14:45] Speaker 1: less shocking now to see like that's personally how I feel.
[14:49] Speaker 1: And that's where I see that gap being bridged, is
[14:52] Speaker 1: where I'm not shocked to see an older woman or
[14:57] Speaker 1: you know, come down the runway. I'm excited and I
[15:00] Speaker 1: and I don't even notice, and you know, we're all
[15:02] Speaker 1: going to get older, and I'm frankly like pretty sick
[15:05] Speaker 1: of the lack of acknowledgment of I've reposted this thing
[15:09] Speaker 1: that Andy me Dal had like a video and someone
[15:11] Speaker 1: asked her like, oh, now that you're over forty and
[15:13] Speaker 1: you're losing your beauty, Like she talks about this question
[15:16] Speaker 1: that she got and because you know, Andy McDowell was
[15:18] Speaker 1: just like forever the face of was it lorial?
[15:21] Speaker 2: Yes, Yes, it's one of those big beauty faces forever.
[15:24] Speaker 1: And then remember when she went into Made and she
[15:26] Speaker 1: had her hair and it was like gray, and yeah,
[15:28] Speaker 1: she looked her age like, you know, she's what is
[15:30] Speaker 1: she in her sixties? I think so she looks incredible,
[15:33] Speaker 1: but like she looks like a six aged.
[15:35] Speaker 2: Beauty is not about age, you know, it's not. I
[15:38] Speaker 2: was quick segue, but I was on mid which is
[15:41] Speaker 2: Muma MIA's podcast for women who are mid thirty, forty
[15:44] Speaker 2: fifty sixties, and I had that question on Instagram too
[15:46] Speaker 2: once and I was like, well, I'm not a banana,
[15:48] Speaker 2: I'm not ham and women aren't something that go off
[15:51] Speaker 2: after a you know, we can be a beautiful vintage
[15:54] Speaker 2: chair or building, and you know, I think that's right,
[15:56] Speaker 2: but it's true because you know, women wear fashion of
[16:01] Speaker 2: all different sizes, of all different ages, and I like
[16:03] Speaker 2: it to you know, a footballer, it's like, well, once
[16:05] Speaker 2: they're thirty, they're out. And it's oftentimes with models it's like, oh,
[16:09] Speaker 2: in your thirties, now, what are you going to do
[16:11] Speaker 2: for your real career after that? And it's like no,
[16:13] Speaker 2: women still work in that industry regardless of their age.
[16:17] Speaker 2: So it's nice to see, but I hope we continue
[16:19] Speaker 2: to see more. Yeah, and it just becomes subconscious before
[16:23] Speaker 2: I ask you just about other Aussie faves. I was
[16:26] Speaker 2: stopped last week. I wish I knew the publication. It
[16:28] Speaker 2: was a video and someone asked me about what I
[16:30] Speaker 2: thought about Australian street style. You know, you go to
[16:34] Speaker 2: Westfield and you see seeds of linen and all the
[16:36] Speaker 2: same colors. You go to fashion Week and it is
[16:39] Speaker 2: so varied and so individual that I'm clocking all these
[16:42] Speaker 2: amazing different things. But when I was asked to sum
[16:46] Speaker 2: up Australian street style, give me your thoughts.
[16:49] Speaker 1: It depends, like you know, Melbourne is very different to Sydney, Like,
[16:52] Speaker 1: you know, Melbourne is very New York, Sydney's very la
[16:56] Speaker 1: I think the temperature does change the way people dress
[16:59] Speaker 1: a little bit. Yeah, and you know Sydney is a
[17:01] Speaker 1: bit more like cleavage and shearing, a bit more.
[17:04] Speaker 2: Like statemental yeah yeah, and.
[17:06] Speaker 1: Then Melbourn's a bit more covered up and like you know,
[17:08] Speaker 1: like yeah, you know, bookish.
[17:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's so true what I saw last week. Because
[17:12] Speaker 2: when they asked me that, I was like, well, look,
[17:13] Speaker 2: if I'm just looking at street style images of I
[17:17] Speaker 2: know it's Copenhagen Fashion Week, you can just tell, or
[17:19] Speaker 2: you can tell it's New York. Whereas I said Australian
[17:22] Speaker 2: Fashion Week, for me last week was you probably couldn't
[17:25] Speaker 2: really tell. It felt like not so much London Fashion Week,
[17:28] Speaker 2: but just being out in London. So many different trends, looks,
[17:32] Speaker 2: not trends, just really creative outfits that you can't really
[17:36] Speaker 2: go Okay. Besides rad everyone was wearing red and burgundy.
[17:39] Speaker 2: There wasn't There were a lot of red, so did I.
[17:42] Speaker 2: But what I loved was that there was just such
[17:45] Speaker 2: a huge array of different looks, different trends.
[17:49] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think the thing is about like Australia, I
[17:53] Speaker 1: wouldn't say we have like a distinct signature of how
[17:56] Speaker 1: we dress. Really like we're still pretty mismatched. We're very
[17:59] Speaker 1: multicultural society in terms of like I feel like people
[18:02] Speaker 1: go away, find themselves and come back. Like I moved
[18:05] Speaker 1: to London when I was younger, so I feel like
[18:07] Speaker 1: my kind of confidence in dressing is like I don't
[18:10] Speaker 1: mind if I look a little bit like Loud and Larry, because.
[18:13] Speaker 2: I'm like, that's what I love about you, and I
[18:15] Speaker 2: ask you to come back time and time again, because
[18:17] Speaker 2: I mean, I don't know what the right phrase is,
[18:19] Speaker 2: but people would say you're a curve model, which is
[18:21] Speaker 2: absolutely ridiculous because you're smaller than the standard Australian woman.
[18:25] Speaker 1: But I love fluctuate.
[18:28] Speaker 2: I don't really fluctually, but you wear what you want.
[18:31] Speaker 2: You look phenomenal. You use confidence from your Instagram and
[18:34] Speaker 2: knowing you in real life and I mostly see you
[18:36] Speaker 2: on Instagram. That is so inspiring and that sounds really
[18:40] Speaker 2: kind of like lip service, but it's not. You're just like,
[18:42] Speaker 2: I feel fucking great I'm wearing this. You know, it's
[18:45] Speaker 2: just very individual and you feel I feel like you
[18:48] Speaker 2: feel really happy and confident what you wear.
[18:50] Speaker 1: Yeah, well I felt like last week as well. I
[18:52] Speaker 1: was really dressing how I dress like it was for
[18:54] Speaker 1: the first year, and I feel like I was talking
[18:56] Speaker 1: to Liz Sunshine, who shoots a lot, and she was
[18:58] Speaker 1: wearing the same thing every day, and we talked a
[19:01] Speaker 1: bit about how this year it felt like people weren't
[19:04] Speaker 1: doing as many go home get changed five changes And
[19:07] Speaker 1: the only look that mine that was featured on you know,
[19:10] Speaker 1: Vogue Runway, was I was wearing a sixteen dollar vintage
[19:15] Speaker 1: Nevada Cowboys T shirt and my own jeans. I think
[19:19] Speaker 1: I was wearing some Burberry sonnies, which is nice because
[19:22] Speaker 1: I love what Burbery is doing, especially speaking about the
[19:24] Speaker 1: age thing. But like that was me that I would
[19:26] Speaker 1: wear that any day of the week.
[19:27] Speaker 2: Yeah, and that was Indivindually, it was the.
[19:29] Speaker 1: One that got kind of featured. And I feel like
[19:31] Speaker 1: it's because it speaks to wear how you actually would dress.
[19:35] Speaker 2: There was a lot of sheer, There was still a
[19:37] Speaker 2: lot of tailoring. What's stuck in your head that you're
[19:39] Speaker 2: excited to wear in the future.
[19:41] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think red red, and there was a lot
[19:44] Speaker 1: of red. So good on you, but yeah, no, but
[19:46] Speaker 1: it was almost that beautiful like cherry, kind of cherry red,
[19:50] Speaker 1: loved like a light chilled wine.
[19:52] Speaker 2: All the good things are red.
[19:54] Speaker 1: And I think as well, there was a lot of
[19:55] Speaker 1: things that you could have as a maximalist style, like
[19:59] Speaker 1: but it's almost like sometimes if you go so maximalist,
[20:02] Speaker 1: it almost becomes a neutral.
[20:04] Speaker 2: Totally more street style. What do you think the everyday
[20:08] Speaker 2: person that doesn't go to fashion Week can learn from
[20:09] Speaker 2: what we saw?
[20:10] Speaker 1: Well, you know what I did this year was I
[20:13] Speaker 1: wore a lot of the same shoes and bag or
[20:18] Speaker 1: you know, like accessory wise like and I think the
[20:21] Speaker 1: thing is is taking away some of that decision fatigue
[20:24] Speaker 1: every morning, right, I think you don't have to style
[20:27] Speaker 1: your whole outfit head to toe and change it up
[20:29] Speaker 1: every day. You know, have the kind of like metallic
[20:33] Speaker 1: bag or like, you know that big statement earring.
[20:36] Speaker 2: I was going to say, you.
[20:37] Speaker 1: Know, the high high boot and wear that all week
[20:41] Speaker 1: with all different looks, Like have that be your statement?
[20:43] Speaker 1: And like, you know, it's like that. It can be
[20:46] Speaker 1: daunting trying to dress like interestingly every day, but if
[20:49] Speaker 1: you kind of commit to I'm going to have this
[20:51] Speaker 1: particular bag, which is a bit loud and out there, yes,
[20:53] Speaker 1: but I'm going to work it in with all these
[20:55] Speaker 1: different looks. I think that that's something where you can
[20:58] Speaker 1: play around with fashion and it's less daunty.
[21:01] Speaker 2: Agreed, And mine was belts. I noticed so many people
[21:03] Speaker 2: had a trench or a blazer or even just a
[21:06] Speaker 2: jumper and just checking on a belt and sinching it
[21:08] Speaker 2: in the waist or whatever. It looks like you were
[21:11] Speaker 2: so effortless and timeless in chic, but maybe you just
[21:13] Speaker 2: grabbed a belt at the last minute.
[21:16] Speaker 1: It's very expensive.
[21:18] Speaker 2: Damn, honey, how wonld are these percent okay? Bougie and budget.
[21:23] Speaker 2: You don't have to give me exact products, you can brands,
[21:26] Speaker 2: just Aussie themed bougie and budget.
[21:28] Speaker 1: My budget I'll start with that is Yeah. I did.
[21:32] Speaker 1: I bought a whole bunch of vintage tees this week
[21:34] Speaker 1: and I wore them to a couple of shows and
[21:38] Speaker 1: just like throughout the week, which I loved. There's a
[21:40] Speaker 1: shop on en More Road in a newtown called Route
[21:43] Speaker 1: sixty six.
[21:44] Speaker 2: And fashion Week wasn't far from there. No, I'm gonna
[21:46] Speaker 2: have to go back this week.
[21:47] Speaker 1: Yeah, and I'm not usually I used to always be
[21:50] Speaker 1: afraid to kind of thrift to be because the shops
[21:52] Speaker 1: are a bit scat, but you know what, they've elevated
[21:55] Speaker 1: so many of that. Like I don't want to sound
[21:57] Speaker 1: like a snob.
[21:58] Speaker 2: No, but it's true.
[21:59] Speaker 1: You know, it's like I'm having a good shopping extent
[22:01] Speaker 1: and you have.
[22:01] Speaker 2: To be in the right frame of mind and have
[22:04] Speaker 2: time to sift.
[22:05] Speaker 1: But then but then now I feel like they've sifted
[22:07] Speaker 1: it for you. I feel like they've gotten there together
[22:10] Speaker 1: in this Route sixty six hop love Love Love. Speaking
[22:12] Speaker 1: of belts, you know, cowboy boots, but amazing vintage ship
[22:15] Speaker 1: teas and really good price point, I think.
[22:18] Speaker 2: And although you know you don't know the brand, you're
[22:19] Speaker 2: supporting an aussy business because that store is an Australian
[22:22] Speaker 2: business that's doing what they can for the circular economy
[22:25] Speaker 2: and the environment totally.
[22:26] Speaker 1: And I got like so many shirts for under forty
[22:28] Speaker 1: bucks and I just.
[22:29] Speaker 2: Love I'll quickly do my budget. It's not they didn't
[22:32] Speaker 2: show up fashion week, because it's important to note that
[22:34] Speaker 2: you know, one percent of Astrone in fashion label show
[22:36] Speaker 2: fashion Week. It's incredibly expensive, but a brand I love
[22:39] Speaker 2: that's quite affordable. It's staple the label. And they have
[22:43] Speaker 2: a nitch that just came out. It's called the Ember
[22:45] Speaker 2: Fluffy Nit Jumper and it's just a cream, quite deep
[22:49] Speaker 2: v neck. It's ninety nine dollars. I've been looking for
[22:51] Speaker 2: a cream jumper that doesn't throw yellow because I love
[22:54] Speaker 2: winter whites and it's I don't want it to be
[22:56] Speaker 2: too it's kind of off white.
[22:58] Speaker 1: Yeah, you don't want to be Margarini.
[23:00] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's the thing. It just it's not right. And
[23:02] Speaker 2: it's got a lovely V. And that's because I just
[23:04] Speaker 2: love checking on a necklace and then feeling like I've
[23:07] Speaker 2: done something so that with jeans, that with white likes
[23:09] Speaker 2: that with my sequence skirt ninety nine dollars. I love
[23:12] Speaker 2: stay for the label and I would love to see
[23:14] Speaker 2: some more affordable Aussie brand showing it fashion Week, because
[23:18] Speaker 2: you know, not everyone has eight hundred dollars for a blazer,
[23:20] Speaker 2: but that's one of my favorite brands. Tell me your bougie.
[23:22] Speaker 1: I bet I can guess my bougie. Well, I mean
[23:26] Speaker 1: I think it's yeah, we could say it's bougie, but
[23:29] Speaker 1: I think it's an investment. Agree, Gagnana everything and the
[23:32] Speaker 1: denim is amazing.
[23:34] Speaker 2: I need to get into some of the dnims. This
[23:35] Speaker 2: was their first year doing dinner.
[23:36] Speaker 1: Their first year and you know what I feel like.
[23:39] Speaker 1: I spoke to Laura May about it.
[23:41] Speaker 2: I went to school with Laura May, is like three
[23:44] Speaker 2: or four grades below me and always that beautiful and
[23:47] Speaker 2: kind and smart. Wow, And that's why I'm so happy
[23:49] Speaker 2: to see their brand do so well.
[23:51] Speaker 1: Yeah, well, she's very clever, and you know, I think
[23:53] Speaker 1: you know she and Hannah has sister have made these
[23:56] Speaker 1: genes which are bury your jeanes. The whole concept is
[23:59] Speaker 1: you cut off the metallic parts, you cut off the
[24:01] Speaker 1: waistband and they're compossible.
[24:03] Speaker 2: Isn't that amazing?
[24:05] Speaker 1: You know? And that's that's you know. I think the
[24:07] Speaker 1: whole greenwashing in the live sustainable fashion is like people
[24:10] Speaker 1: are making things where they're going to try and tell
[24:12] Speaker 1: you that you can wear it in threeenty thirteen, you know,
[24:14] Speaker 1: and it's like, no, this stuff is going to not
[24:17] Speaker 1: last that.
[24:18] Speaker 2: You're going to want to and your kids aren't going
[24:19] Speaker 2: to want to know.
[24:20] Speaker 1: But where we put it? And so it's like you
[24:22] Speaker 1: can bury these in your garden to put seeds and
[24:25] Speaker 1: then they will compost. It's organic cotton vegetable.
[24:27] Speaker 2: Guys, they really walk the walk, not just talk the talk.
[24:30] Speaker 1: I think. So I think I think it's just like
[24:32] Speaker 1: in a really like honest way about Like, No, I
[24:34] Speaker 1: don't think she's ever personally said that she's sustainable, no, like,
[24:38] Speaker 1: but you.
[24:38] Speaker 2: Can just tell, I mean from their vibes that they're
[24:43] Speaker 2: not going to just say something for the sake of it.
[24:46] Speaker 1: No. Well, and you know, you know, fashion is a business.
[24:49] Speaker 1: I guess people are out to make money. It's definitely true.
[24:51] Speaker 1: But like still to that point, like I just think, yeah,
[24:54] Speaker 1: that whole concept of like creating something that then can
[24:57] Speaker 1: get buried in your garden instead of going to land
[24:59] Speaker 1: phill is. Like, I think it's amazing. Wow, I've never
[25:03] Speaker 1: heard of anything like that.
[25:04] Speaker 2: I want to go and bury someone and see what happens.
[25:06] Speaker 2: But I think you have to wait around a long time.
[25:08] Speaker 2: And if I buy some, I'm going to wear the
[25:10] Speaker 2: quickly for me. Another brand that didn't show but has
[25:12] Speaker 2: shown before, Rebecca Velance. I love her stuff. She has
[25:16] Speaker 2: just brought out the hazel shirt. It is expensive for
[25:19] Speaker 2: a shirt, three hundred and forty nine dollars. Pure silk,
[25:22] Speaker 2: the deepest, most delicious, rich chocolate.
[25:25] Speaker 1: Yeah, she makes beautiful, luxey vibes.
[25:28] Speaker 2: Yeah, very kind of black tie. But then she's got
[25:30] Speaker 2: some sort of suiting. And I just feel like this
[25:32] Speaker 2: rich chocolate silk shirt would make me feel so fancy
[25:36] Speaker 2: and so grown up with jeans, wide legged pants anything.
[25:39] Speaker 2: I just am not good enough at washing silk yet
[25:42] Speaker 2: to let myself invest in that. And I'm not dry
[25:45] Speaker 2: cleaning something like that all the time because cost per drying.
[25:48] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think choky silk is like it speaks like
[25:53] Speaker 1: I'm a grown up.
[25:54] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm a grown up. Oh, Jess, I love chatting
[25:56] Speaker 2: to you. Let's not wait for fashion week next year.
[25:58] Speaker 2: I'm gonna have you back, but thank you for joining me.
[26:00] Speaker 2: I hope you can rest your voice after a very
[26:02] Speaker 2: busy week last.
[26:03] Speaker 1: And thank You'll be having a vitamental after this.
