[0:08] Speaker 1: You're listening to a MoMA Mia podcast.
[0:15] Speaker 2: Whoever said orange is a new pink with seriously disturbed.
[0:18] Speaker 1: Laurels for spraying groundbreaking?
[0:21] Speaker 2: Oh my god, you.
[0:22] Speaker 1: Have to do it.
[0:23] Speaker 3: You live for fashion.
[0:26] Speaker 2: Hello, and welcome to Nothing to Wear the podcast. It
[0:29] Speaker 2: solves fashion problems and levels up your wardrobe. I'm Lee
[0:32] Speaker 2: Campbell and today I'm joined by fashion editor Marissa Ramond.
[0:36] Speaker 1: She started her career way back in the.
[0:38] Speaker 2: Day at Cleo magazine, where she was the fashion editor,
[0:41] Speaker 2: and since she has pivoted.
[0:43] Speaker 1: And evolved to digital.
[0:45] Speaker 2: Marissa often writes for Mamma Mia, and her fashion articles
[0:48] Speaker 2: are so popular because she is a total pro at
[0:51] Speaker 2: finding that sweet spot from high and low and shopping
[0:54] Speaker 2: mid and looking very stylish.
[0:55] Speaker 1: So let's get into it.
[0:57] Speaker 2: Marissa, Welcome to Nothing to Wear. I can't believe we
[1:00] Speaker 2: haven't had you on here yet. We should have because
[1:02] Speaker 2: I am the same age as you when we've worked
[1:04] Speaker 2: in magazines for so long. But for those I don't
[1:07] Speaker 2: know you, who are you, what do you do? What
[1:10] Speaker 2: was your past career and what are you doing now?
[1:12] Speaker 4: Highly well, I have had quite a long career in fashion.
[1:17] Speaker 4: I started probably around the same time as you in
[1:19] Speaker 4: magazines when I was twenty years old, so I was
[1:24] Speaker 4: kind of, yeah, half my life about forty four, I'm
[1:27] Speaker 4: forty five.
[1:28] Speaker 3: Yeah yeah. So I started, you know, wanting to be
[1:31] Speaker 3: a stylist.
[1:32] Speaker 4: So I was taping shoes and steaming clothes for a
[1:35] Speaker 4: very long time until I kind of moved up the
[1:37] Speaker 4: ranks and became fashion editor of Clear Magazine.
[1:41] Speaker 3: I did that for a few years and I.
[1:42] Speaker 4: Loved it, but kind of got an itch to move
[1:45] Speaker 4: to digital when the blog kind of atmosphere was happening
[1:48] Speaker 4: in Australia. So I was lucky enough to be the
[1:51] Speaker 4: launch editor of Pop Sugar Australia and that was kind
[1:55] Speaker 4: of how I started my website career and kind of
[1:59] Speaker 4: learning the background about blogs and the momentum of what
[2:03] Speaker 4: websites kind of need, and it was, you know, a
[2:06] Speaker 4: real learning kind of.
[2:08] Speaker 1: It was a big change. It was huge.
[2:10] Speaker 4: It was kind of posting every hour and just getting
[2:13] Speaker 4: used to that really fast cycle as opposed to magazines,
[2:16] Speaker 4: which we were always about three months in advance. So
[2:19] Speaker 4: that was awesome. And I did that until I got
[2:22] Speaker 4: pregnant with my first.
[2:22] Speaker 1: Baby, and from there, now, what do you do.
[2:26] Speaker 4: After having both my children? I started to freelance and
[2:29] Speaker 4: do contract work. I worked on the Grace Tales, which
[2:32] Speaker 4: was a website about motherhood for a while, and then
[2:35] Speaker 4: COVID hit and so I was homeschooling two children and
[2:39] Speaker 4: trying to work out my next move. And that's when
[2:41] Speaker 4: I decided to launch my website, which kind of started
[2:45] Speaker 4: honestly from the schoolgates where I had a lot of
[2:47] Speaker 4: women come up to me and asked me about where
[2:49] Speaker 4: to shop, how to shop, how to specifically shop online
[2:53] Speaker 4: because it was still quite a new and a little
[2:57] Speaker 4: bit scary, that whole idea of taking shopping from retail
[3:00] Speaker 4: to online. And I was always very good at it,
[3:03] Speaker 4: an early adopter of shopping online, and I just thought
[3:06] Speaker 4: I better make something of this, and I tried my
[3:08] Speaker 4: hand at creating a website.
[3:10] Speaker 1: And here you are, Well it is all worked out
[3:13] Speaker 1: for the best.
[3:13] Speaker 2: Well you're going to help us with that and some
[3:16] Speaker 2: wonderful not too expensive tips and tricks. But firstly, how
[3:18] Speaker 2: do you describe your personal style? Who are you when
[3:21] Speaker 2: you get dressed?
[3:22] Speaker 4: I think I've changed a lot, I think since working
[3:25] Speaker 4: from home mainly, but I think if I had to
[3:28] Speaker 4: describe my style, it would be modern because I love
[3:31] Speaker 4: to be on trend, but I don't like to look
[3:33] Speaker 4: like a fashion victim, so I always like to kind
[3:36] Speaker 4: of touch on trends without committing too heavily refined because
[3:40] Speaker 4: I'm a bit of a neat freak as well, and
[3:42] Speaker 4: I like to look polished.
[3:45] Speaker 3: On taurus.
[3:46] Speaker 4: Okay, yeah, and classic because I still like the staples
[3:51] Speaker 4: and I like the foundation pieces that kind of make
[3:53] Speaker 4: everything else sing.
[3:55] Speaker 1: Are you a frequent shopper because it's your job.
[3:57] Speaker 4: I am, but I actually probably buy less now than
[4:00] Speaker 4: I ever have in my life, just because I'm better
[4:03] Speaker 4: at it. And I think you realize that you don't
[4:07] Speaker 4: need a lot of the same thing, and I think
[4:10] Speaker 4: you can kind of break the cycle of thinking you
[4:12] Speaker 4: need a new outfit every time you have an event
[4:14] Speaker 4: on or have.
[4:15] Speaker 3: A birthday party or something like that.
[4:16] Speaker 4: It doesn't really work in your favor if you keep
[4:18] Speaker 4: accumulating clothes like that. So I'm definitely more considered than
[4:22] Speaker 4: I've ever been. But I still love shopping.
[4:25] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, Well, the good thing is you kind of
[4:26] Speaker 1: get to look a lot. I work all.
[4:29] Speaker 4: The time, and I think that's why I am a
[4:31] Speaker 4: good shopper, because I know exactly like the Wat's new
[4:34] Speaker 4: section of every favorite website.
[4:35] Speaker 2: It's like, I'm looking for this kind of shoe and
[4:37] Speaker 2: you're like, okay, it launched on the iconogy.
[4:40] Speaker 4: I can tell you exactly where to shop and how
[4:42] Speaker 4: to shop.
[4:43] Speaker 1: You're liking cyclopad, We're going with that right now.
[4:46] Speaker 2: So then when it comes to fashion, and I guess
[4:48] Speaker 2: you're offering, what's your niche? Do you have kind of
[4:51] Speaker 2: a specific area. Are you very luxury, you're very street?
[4:55] Speaker 2: I don't know what's your passion and who do you help?
[4:58] Speaker 4: I would say at this stage of life, I'm all
[5:00] Speaker 4: about mid price and mid range, so I always say
[5:03] Speaker 4: I'm quite good at searching out the mid brands that
[5:06] Speaker 4: people may I not have ever heard of. I'm in midlife,
[5:10] Speaker 4: I guess now myself as well, so it is, you know,
[5:14] Speaker 4: a stage where I probably haven't ever shopped like this before.
[5:18] Speaker 4: I think when I was in magazines and it was
[5:20] Speaker 4: all about logos and designer and keeping up with what
[5:24] Speaker 4: you thought that you should be wearing. And it definitely
[5:27] Speaker 4: changed after I started working from home and having kids.
[5:30] Speaker 1: I'm a lot more.
[5:30] Speaker 4: Practical in my dressing now, and I think it's made
[5:34] Speaker 4: me a better fashion editor and also my style has
[5:37] Speaker 4: improved a lot.
[5:39] Speaker 1: Interesting. It's funny because mid does really some all of
[5:41] Speaker 1: it up.
[5:42] Speaker 2: You know, I think, you know, women in this particular
[5:44] Speaker 2: stage of life, we might you know, we feel like
[5:46] Speaker 2: we can't shop at that really young shopped. I can't imagine.
[5:49] Speaker 2: There's too many of us that are running over to
[5:51] Speaker 2: Chanell and it's like, where do we shop that is
[5:54] Speaker 2: you know, stylish, it's going to last, but is practical
[5:56] Speaker 2: and comfortable. And there is when you said, you know,
[5:59] Speaker 2: brands that we may not have heard of. I can
[6:01] Speaker 2: think of three or four that I just go to, yeah,
[6:03] Speaker 2: straight away, their websites or their stores. But there's more
[6:05] Speaker 2: than that. But you can kind of feel like this
[6:07] Speaker 2: point it's like, oh, what's for me.
[6:09] Speaker 4: Totally, especially I've got almost teenage daughter. I don't want
[6:13] Speaker 4: to be dressing in the same stores that her and
[6:14] Speaker 4: her friends are. I just I need some separation from that. So,
[6:19] Speaker 4: you know, as I was kind of editing on my website,
[6:22] Speaker 4: I discovered a lot of brands that I didn't think we.
[6:25] Speaker 3: Had access to here in Australia.
[6:27] Speaker 4: But we do things like Arquette and other stories massive.
[6:32] Speaker 1: Duties the brand, right, Yes, that's right.
[6:34] Speaker 4: Sorry, so they're all under the H and M umbrella,
[6:37] Speaker 4: and I mean they're all awesome in their own way
[6:40] Speaker 4: because is obviously an obvious one, but it's such a
[6:43] Speaker 4: good place to get appropriate and practical kind of staples.
[6:48] Speaker 2: And I had heard of most of those from overseas,
[6:50] Speaker 2: but I don't think a lot of people do know
[6:52] Speaker 2: that where they can get them here, or that they
[6:54] Speaker 2: ship internationally.
[6:55] Speaker 4: That's right, so they all ship internationally. You can get
[6:58] Speaker 4: a selection of arquette on the Iconic. I always like
[7:01] Speaker 4: to view the entire range because I'm just like that,
[7:04] Speaker 4: so I always go direct as well, and other stories
[7:06] Speaker 4: as well. It's on the Iconic, but you can get direct,
[7:09] Speaker 4: so there's just access to a lot more in that
[7:12] Speaker 4: mid price range that we don't always have much of
[7:14] Speaker 4: here in Australia. And I think it also gives you
[7:18] Speaker 4: a unique point of view with what you're wearing, rather
[7:20] Speaker 4: than looking like every other person in Sydney.
[7:23] Speaker 3: So I just like that point of difference.
[7:26] Speaker 2: I think that's true because a lot of people will
[7:27] Speaker 2: go to the maybe they know Zara online or each name,
[7:29] Speaker 2: or they may have one in their shopping center, but
[7:31] Speaker 2: I think there's so many more similar ones from overseas
[7:33] Speaker 2: that we don't realize we can get here. But what
[7:35] Speaker 2: about the more obvious ones or just the ones that
[7:38] Speaker 2: are kind of accessible to everyone that you think is
[7:41] Speaker 2: still worth it.
[7:41] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean I shop all over I honestly, it
[7:44] Speaker 4: doesn't really matter about the brand. I love a big
[7:47] Speaker 4: selection of brands to choose from. Witchery is a great one,
[7:51] Speaker 4: and a local label here then I always can find
[7:53] Speaker 4: one or two pieces every season. Assembly Label is also
[7:57] Speaker 4: super approachable, and like the price points make sense and
[8:01] Speaker 4: you don't feel like you're being ripped off, which is
[8:03] Speaker 4: really nice.
[8:04] Speaker 1: That's not a good way to put it.
[8:05] Speaker 2: That past points makes sense. I was looking at some
[8:07] Speaker 2: of their things online the other day and I was like, oh.
[8:09] Speaker 1: That's cheap. But it's not that it's cheap, it's how
[8:11] Speaker 1: it should be. Yeah, that's right, just to get quality.
[8:14] Speaker 1: But yeah, other brands, you know, sometimes you're like, oh okay,
[8:17] Speaker 1: am I really yeah?
[8:18] Speaker 4: And you know Country Road also can come out with
[8:21] Speaker 4: pieces every season that are really bang on and don't
[8:25] Speaker 4: look like everything else going on. So yeah, just a
[8:28] Speaker 4: real mix of brands.
[8:29] Speaker 1: I love Mere Siege, I still love a seed.
[8:32] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[8:32] Speaker 2: I've also found that all these de Cuba as well,
[8:35] Speaker 2: and Target I think isazing.
[8:36] Speaker 3: Yeah they are.
[8:38] Speaker 2: When you say your shop or you're very good at
[8:40] Speaker 2: shopping online, how did you hone that?
[8:42] Speaker 1: And what tips can you give us there?
[8:43] Speaker 2: Because I think a lot of people in this life
[8:45] Speaker 2: stage would love to go for a peruse and a
[8:47] Speaker 2: touch and a feel. But it's not often that all
[8:50] Speaker 2: the stores you want to go through in one spot.
[8:51] Speaker 1: On the time. So how can we nail shopping well online?
[8:56] Speaker 4: I think that people are afraid because of the trying
[9:00] Speaker 4: on and returning aspect of it, which I totally get.
[9:03] Speaker 4: I'm quite anal with stuff like that. So I will
[9:06] Speaker 4: do that all in the same time and put it
[9:07] Speaker 4: in the red post box in the same days, right literally,
[9:11] Speaker 4: sometimes even in the same hour.
[9:12] Speaker 1: That's probably clever, though, Yeah, get just.
[9:14] Speaker 4: To get it out otherwise it'll hang around. And Yeah,
[9:18] Speaker 4: all I can say is, if you aren't a big
[9:20] Speaker 4: online shopper, give it a go because it does change
[9:22] Speaker 4: your life. And my big tip for shopping online is
[9:27] Speaker 4: to buy two sizes return one because you just don't
[9:31] Speaker 4: ever know the way you want something to fit or
[9:33] Speaker 4: the way it will fit, and if you've never tried
[9:34] Speaker 4: that brand before. But I feel like that's a low
[9:36] Speaker 4: risk way of getting exactly what you want.
[9:39] Speaker 2: It's like going taking to to the change room totally.
[9:41] Speaker 2: But obviously you're quite well versed in different brands. It's
[9:44] Speaker 2: return policy, so we always check that first.
[9:46] Speaker 4: Absolutely, yes, And you know the major ones will have
[9:50] Speaker 4: a really great return policy. I think Netaporta, the Iconic
[9:53] Speaker 4: Shop Bop, they're all, you know, kind of a thirty
[9:55] Speaker 4: day return period and most of them are free returns,
[9:59] Speaker 4: so the risk is really low and I feel like
[10:02] Speaker 4: you just get a greater selection of product.
[10:04] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's true, you do have mortitudes from generally, and
[10:06] Speaker 2: you're just going to make sure you return it. And
[10:08] Speaker 2: also on sale, because sometimes I've got caught up, betwe
[10:10] Speaker 2: because some sale.
[10:11] Speaker 1: Can be returned but final sale can't.
[10:13] Speaker 2: And I'm too excited because it's on sale, and then
[10:15] Speaker 2: it arrives and I'm like, oh, I don't know if I.
[10:17] Speaker 3: Read the fine Yeah, for sure.
[10:20] Speaker 1: And what about fabrics.
[10:21] Speaker 2: I think that's where I get scared because I think,
[10:24] Speaker 2: you know, I'm starting to get better at it now
[10:25] Speaker 2: to even just read the composition. But they've used the
[10:27] Speaker 2: best imagery possible that something looks really lux and delicious.
[10:30] Speaker 2: So do you go and read all of that info?
[10:33] Speaker 4: I do. I am really hell bent on reading about materials.
[10:37] Speaker 4: But my trick also with that is if you're shopping
[10:40] Speaker 4: at a chain store H and m Zara, even our
[10:42] Speaker 4: cat and Cause, type in the search bar the fabrication,
[10:47] Speaker 4: so that will weed out all the polyester, because when
[10:50] Speaker 4: they use leather, when they use silk, when they use whole,
[10:53] Speaker 4: they will always put it in the subject line.
[10:57] Speaker 1: Because it's selling.
[10:58] Speaker 2: Yet, do you try to avoid all synthetics or does
[11:00] Speaker 2: it kind of depend on what you're looking for?
[11:02] Speaker 4: I definitely don't. I don't think that's a really stick
[11:04] Speaker 4: way of shopping. And I think if you love fashion
[11:06] Speaker 4: and clothes as I do, it kind of takes a
[11:09] Speaker 4: bit of the joy away from it. With knitwear and
[11:12] Speaker 4: outer where I am hell bent on having kind of
[11:15] Speaker 4: mostly wool and really great quality.
[11:17] Speaker 3: But I think if we're talking about.
[11:19] Speaker 4: A dress or a skirt or even a blouse, there's
[11:22] Speaker 4: room for kind of a few synthetics.
[11:25] Speaker 2: And I think sometimes you know they're not all made equal,
[11:27] Speaker 2: Like there's some amazing synthemas that will look like silk
[11:30] Speaker 2: and just flow beautifully or whatever it may be. Yeah,
[11:33] Speaker 2: but I think when I started to educate myself on
[11:35] Speaker 2: the fabrics from shopping online that I was like, oh,
[11:36] Speaker 2: I can't as polyester or I think that's a bad thing.
[11:39] Speaker 2: And I was like, hang on, no, some of my
[11:41] Speaker 2: favorite pieces are polyester, and tell of my worst.
[11:43] Speaker 1: Pieces are polyester.
[11:45] Speaker 3: Absolutely.
[11:46] Speaker 2: If someone hasn't shopped a brand before, maybe they're just
[11:49] Speaker 2: not a big online shopper. Should they start with brands
[11:52] Speaker 2: they know they're in their wardrobe so that they can
[11:54] Speaker 2: kind of they already know the sizing and you know,
[11:56] Speaker 2: perhaps the brand's aesthetic.
[11:57] Speaker 1: Do you suggest that?
[11:58] Speaker 3: I think so.
[11:59] Speaker 4: But also I would think have the confidence to try
[12:02] Speaker 4: one of those multi brand retailers like a Netta Porter
[12:05] Speaker 4: or a Shop Bop, because you can get a bit
[12:07] Speaker 4: of everything and then just return what you don't think
[12:10] Speaker 4: is right. I think it just allows for trying, and
[12:13] Speaker 4: I think that's what we need to do. Just try
[12:15] Speaker 4: different brands, and that's when you become, you know, more knowledgeable.
[12:18] Speaker 4: That's how I discovered Masimo Duty and now I kind
[12:21] Speaker 4: of you know, every season, might do an order from there,
[12:24] Speaker 4: and you know how it fits and you know how
[12:25] Speaker 4: it feels. So I think it does take a bit
[12:28] Speaker 4: of trial and error.
[12:29] Speaker 1: Yes, but it's well.
[12:30] Speaker 2: It Yeah, it's true because I think I always think, oh,
[12:32] Speaker 2: but I can't really try it on, But I can
[12:34] Speaker 2: because it's coming to my home with my other things.
[12:37] Speaker 2: Whereas if you're trying something on in store, yes you
[12:39] Speaker 2: are touching and feeling it then, but you're in their
[12:41] Speaker 2: chaine room just you know, with their garments. But sometimes
[12:44] Speaker 2: it's about getting at home anyway and seeing what it
[12:46] Speaker 2: works with.
[12:46] Speaker 4: Yeah, and I think you know, the reality is not
[12:48] Speaker 4: everyone has access to a lot of these stores, and
[12:52] Speaker 4: you don't have a lot of time to go in
[12:54] Speaker 4: and try on all these things. So having it delivered
[12:57] Speaker 4: and doing things in the comfort from your own home,
[12:59] Speaker 4: it does make the process a little bit more enjoyable
[13:02] Speaker 4: and easier in the long run.
[13:04] Speaker 1: It's true. Yeah, it's true. I need to remember that.
[13:07] Speaker 2: So let's take it back to the mid topic because
[13:09] Speaker 2: I kind of just love that that's where I'm at personally.
[13:12] Speaker 2: So we're kind of talking about mid positioning and mid
[13:15] Speaker 2: price point. But what else do you think works in
[13:18] Speaker 2: this life stage or in this kind of category for
[13:20] Speaker 2: women that are where we're at. What do you see
[13:23] Speaker 2: people you know asking you for what do you look
[13:26] Speaker 2: for in terms of cuts and comfort, and you.
[13:28] Speaker 4: Know, I think the biggest thing that people ask me
[13:31] Speaker 4: about on my website and on social is how to
[13:33] Speaker 4: get out of activewear, and that is I think a
[13:36] Speaker 4: lot of stay at home mums or mums that work
[13:38] Speaker 4: from home, they default to active wear because they might
[13:41] Speaker 4: do an early morning session at the gym and then
[13:44] Speaker 4: have to do the practical things of day to day,
[13:46] Speaker 4: dropping off kids and getting groceries, and they think that
[13:49] Speaker 4: comfort meanslycrum At the moment, though, I think what's trending
[13:54] Speaker 4: is catering for that really well. Like elastic pants, barrel pants,
[13:58] Speaker 4: they're really comfy.
[13:59] Speaker 3: They're just as comfy as like your leggings.
[14:01] Speaker 4: And you can look polished in them with a great
[14:03] Speaker 4: flat like I don't take trends to literally. I don't
[14:06] Speaker 4: think i'd wear them with a sneaker or anything like that.
[14:09] Speaker 4: But a beautiful flat and knit and a coach with
[14:12] Speaker 4: a cotton pant looks and feels just as good as lycrp.
[14:15] Speaker 1: Con'tfee Yeah, yeah, yeah, I don't want tit leggings.
[14:18] Speaker 3: Oh neither do I.
[14:19] Speaker 2: Coming up after the break, Maurriss is going to give
[14:21] Speaker 2: us even more of her best mid range recommendation. Okay,
[14:41] Speaker 2: so for anyone listening, they're in the similar life stage
[14:43] Speaker 2: as you and I. They haven't found their personal style.
[14:47] Speaker 2: Are they just to feel a bit overwhelmed or intimidated
[14:50] Speaker 2: by fashion?
[14:51] Speaker 1: What are your tips?
[14:53] Speaker 4: I think the first thing I would say is to
[14:57] Speaker 4: be careful of who you follow on Instagram. As much
[15:00] Speaker 4: as it can be really inspiring, it can also be
[15:02] Speaker 4: overwhelming and do the opposite it will just confuse you.
[15:06] Speaker 4: So I would say, definitely get some inspiration picks, but
[15:10] Speaker 4: take one or two elements from that and don't take
[15:12] Speaker 4: it too literally. You know, it might be introducing a
[15:15] Speaker 4: new color to your wardrobe or a new accessory, but
[15:17] Speaker 4: try not to copy it head to toe because what
[15:21] Speaker 4: works for someone doesn't always work for you. So start
[15:25] Speaker 4: small in terms of if you're replicating a look. And
[15:29] Speaker 4: also I would just say having the confidence to try
[15:31] Speaker 4: new brands is a really big thing because you will
[15:33] Speaker 4: discover new shapes, new fabrics, new colors, new styles that
[15:37] Speaker 4: will work for you that you never even considered.
[15:39] Speaker 2: What about going back into their own wardrobe first, because
[15:42] Speaker 2: that's where I just don't because I'm like nothing to ear.
[15:45] Speaker 2: There's way too much in it, So then I just
[15:47] Speaker 2: go straight online or to the shops.
[15:48] Speaker 1: But how can we kind.
[15:50] Speaker 2: Of take stock of where we're at and what we've
[15:52] Speaker 2: got first so that we don't waste more money.
[15:54] Speaker 4: Yeah, totally, And I think the best thing with that
[15:56] Speaker 4: is making sure you have the foundations of a good wardrobe,
[15:59] Speaker 4: because adding a printed skirt or blouse or a trending
[16:02] Speaker 4: item will not help you in the long run. So
[16:04] Speaker 4: making sure that you do have the white T shirts,
[16:07] Speaker 4: the really good denim, a really great coat, some practical flats.
[16:12] Speaker 4: You do need the basics before you start creating interesting outfits.
[16:16] Speaker 4: And I think those things do need to be updated
[16:19] Speaker 4: quite regularly because they don't wear forever.
[16:21] Speaker 3: You know, a white T shirt you.
[16:23] Speaker 4: Can wash and wear a few times, but it'll get
[16:25] Speaker 4: yellow stains, It'll get you want to refresh those items.
[16:28] Speaker 4: So having basics and making sure you have a kind
[16:32] Speaker 4: of a variety of those is really important.
[16:34] Speaker 2: Yeah. Even you know, we can call something classic, like
[16:36] Speaker 2: a classic pair of jeans, but even jeans coming in out.
[16:38] Speaker 2: It's not that you have to absolutely ditch those ones,
[16:40] Speaker 2: but you might just want to alter the shape or
[16:42] Speaker 2: the cart whatever it may be.
[16:43] Speaker 1: And then have a few variety of styles or she's from. Yeah,
[16:46] Speaker 1: talk to me about jeans. Do you like geens? You're
[16:48] Speaker 1: a jeens girl.
[16:49] Speaker 4: I don't love jeans, but I do wear them as
[16:52] Speaker 4: a necessity in winter especially. I will say the barrel
[16:58] Speaker 4: leg shape has changed things. I think they do feel
[17:01] Speaker 4: a lot more comfortable on and surprisingly flattering on as well.
[17:06] Speaker 2: I feel like think it first came about because I
[17:08] Speaker 2: had some a couple of vintage pairs of barrel but
[17:11] Speaker 2: I didn't really know what they were called, like kind
[17:12] Speaker 2: of you know, I knew what they were, but when
[17:14] Speaker 2: it came everywhere, I was.
[17:15] Speaker 1: Like, oh, everyone's like that's so unflattering.
[17:16] Speaker 2: I said, wait, wait, wait, you've got to you know,
[17:18] Speaker 2: you've got to try them on, get the right the
[17:20] Speaker 2: curves at the right spot.
[17:21] Speaker 1: They're actually incredibly comfortable. Yeah, they are. They here to stay.
[17:25] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[17:25] Speaker 4: And you don't also have to invest a lot of
[17:27] Speaker 4: money in denim. That's what I think we used to
[17:29] Speaker 4: be told that you'd have to get designer denim and
[17:32] Speaker 4: spend over three hundred dollars for a pair. That definitely
[17:35] Speaker 4: doesn't apply anymore. Yes, because H and M's are a
[17:38] Speaker 4: mango they do really create Yeah, it's so good.
[17:41] Speaker 1: Yeah, any tips are fine to good.
[17:43] Speaker 2: DNI Is it about the composition, like you know, some
[17:46] Speaker 2: people would like a little bit of stretch, I think,
[17:48] Speaker 2: but I think it's one hundred percent Cottons generally more.
[17:50] Speaker 3: Durable, I think.
[17:51] Speaker 4: Yeah, I think a rigid denim is going to be
[17:53] Speaker 4: better in the long run. I think stretch can look
[17:56] Speaker 4: dated very quickly, but a little bit of stretch really
[17:59] Speaker 4: helps with comfort.
[18:00] Speaker 3: Yeah, so it is trial and error with denim unfortunately. Yeah.
[18:04] Speaker 4: I did see Levi's do a style called the cinch
[18:08] Speaker 4: wide leg, which has an adjustable waste, which I thought
[18:11] Speaker 4: was very very practical.
[18:13] Speaker 2: And I've got the cotton on version and I literally
[18:16] Speaker 2: have like little button thing and you can you can
[18:18] Speaker 2: wear them high waisted, low wasted, or when you weight
[18:21] Speaker 2: fluctuates and then you've kind of got too bad.
[18:23] Speaker 3: Yeah sounds amazing.
[18:25] Speaker 1: Oh they're very cool. Yeah, they're very cool.
[18:27] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, I'll see even gens talk to me again
[18:29] Speaker 2: about trends. You mentioned at the start that you like to,
[18:32] Speaker 2: you know, be across the trends and maybe dip your toe.
[18:35] Speaker 2: How do we the everyday people kind of know what's coming,
[18:38] Speaker 2: but then not full victims to buying all of that.
[18:41] Speaker 2: I mean, you're in a beautiful Poka dot. I remember,
[18:43] Speaker 2: I remember last time Poko dots were in and I
[18:45] Speaker 2: went insane. I just bought so many Poco dots. But
[18:48] Speaker 2: because I'm really terrible at coming in my wardrobe, it's
[18:50] Speaker 2: been great this time around.
[18:51] Speaker 1: But I think I learned from that.
[18:53] Speaker 2: That was like, WHOA, just because you like a trend
[18:55] Speaker 2: or you know it really resonates with you, you don't
[18:57] Speaker 2: need to buy all of it. And even if you
[19:00] Speaker 2: don't like a trend, it's not compulsory.
[19:02] Speaker 4: Absolutely, I think that's a really good tip in itself,
[19:05] Speaker 4: like you don't go too hard on a trend. Because
[19:07] Speaker 4: even we were talking about the barrel egg that is
[19:09] Speaker 4: making its way out already, and I did invest quite
[19:12] Speaker 4: heavily in a few pants and some denim, and you
[19:14] Speaker 4: know it'll be all about straight leg and skinny legs
[19:17] Speaker 4: soon enough. So I would definitely ease into trends. You
[19:20] Speaker 4: don't have to invest, and don't buy multiple of the
[19:23] Speaker 4: same item because you don't really need that many things,
[19:26] Speaker 4: especially if they're trending. I would invest more in basics
[19:29] Speaker 4: and classics rather than trend based items.
[19:33] Speaker 1: So if you do like a poker dot get one thing?
[19:35] Speaker 3: I think so, I think so yes?
[19:37] Speaker 1: And were it well?
[19:38] Speaker 2: Yeah, so you like a trend, I like a trend.
[19:40] Speaker 2: Let's just say our listener likes trends.
[19:43] Speaker 1: How do we do them?
[19:44] Speaker 2: But without looking like everybody else who also likes to
[19:47] Speaker 2: follow a current trend?
[19:48] Speaker 3: Yeah? Hard, take it easy. I would say, don't go
[19:54] Speaker 3: head to toe and maybe.
[19:55] Speaker 2: Not from those three or four main retailers, that's right.
[19:59] Speaker 1: They where bits and pieces maybe a little bit yeap.
[20:02] Speaker 4: So looking online at different brands really helps with that.
[20:06] Speaker 4: Shop bop action is one of my favorites for finding
[20:09] Speaker 4: really cute and different So yeah, it's really great. No,
[20:13] Speaker 4: I just think you don't have to wear something head
[20:15] Speaker 4: to toe if it's in fashion, like you know, and no,
[20:17] Speaker 4: red is trending and everyone's wearing red items and that's great,
[20:20] Speaker 4: but you don't need five or six red items.
[20:23] Speaker 3: One or two will do.
[20:24] Speaker 2: Back to the Polka dots, I found that this season.
[20:26] Speaker 2: I mean I haven't bought anymore, but there's some really
[20:28] Speaker 2: great ones in thrift stores or on consignment or second
[20:31] Speaker 2: hand store.
[20:31] Speaker 1: So sometimes there's a trend.
[20:33] Speaker 2: Particularly if it is classic like a Perko dot or
[20:35] Speaker 2: if it's y t uk that you can go and
[20:37] Speaker 2: find a second hand version, so it's not that version
[20:39] Speaker 2: that everyone's got from the chain store.
[20:41] Speaker 4: Absolutely, that's the best way to look unique and not
[20:43] Speaker 4: like everyone else.
[20:44] Speaker 1: Do you do any secondhand shop?
[20:46] Speaker 4: I'm terrible at it.
[20:50] Speaker 1: So hot, that's what.
[20:51] Speaker 3: Yeah, I sell on deepop, but I don't.
[20:53] Speaker 1: Buy, but I think, yeah, yeah.
[20:56] Speaker 2: So while I don't find those online thrifting stores overwhelming,
[21:00] Speaker 2: I do find some of the big sites. You know,
[21:02] Speaker 2: you need porters, your shop bop, sometimes the iconic asos.
[21:06] Speaker 1: It can be am.
[21:07] Speaker 2: I mean it's a playground, but you've come to find
[21:09] Speaker 2: a skirt or a top and there's just so much.
[21:12] Speaker 2: So what do you do there when you're on the
[21:13] Speaker 2: homepage and it's you just you don't know what you're
[21:16] Speaker 2: looking for. You don't how to find what you're looking for.
[21:17] Speaker 1: Do you use the filters? What do you trick?
[21:19] Speaker 3: Yeah? I desperately use the filters.
[21:21] Speaker 4: You need to use the filters, especially for something like
[21:23] Speaker 4: the iconic netaporter Shop Bop. It's too overwhelming otherwise, So
[21:28] Speaker 4: I filter by size, but you need some buffer either
[21:31] Speaker 4: side of your size, because you know, you don't know
[21:33] Speaker 4: how something's going to fit, so I will do my
[21:35] Speaker 4: size and maybe one or two others, and I always
[21:38] Speaker 4: do low to high.
[21:39] Speaker 3: In price, just so I'm not disappointing me too.
[21:42] Speaker 2: But then if it's a whole category, you're like, oh,
[21:43] Speaker 2: sox so socks, that is annoying.
[21:47] Speaker 4: Yeah, you just have to know when to scroll and
[21:49] Speaker 4: or the iconic is actually good because it does pricing range,
[21:53] Speaker 4: so you can kind of skip over the really cheap
[21:55] Speaker 4: stuff and then your maximum and it will give you
[21:58] Speaker 4: a great range of product. Definitely use the filters, but
[22:02] Speaker 4: what I would say is don't use the designer filter
[22:04] Speaker 4: or the brand filter, because you're not going to be
[22:06] Speaker 4: exposed to brands that you don't know of, and you
[22:09] Speaker 4: might be pleasantly surprised.
[22:10] Speaker 1: That is so true.
[22:11] Speaker 2: Coming up after the break, Boogie to Budget, and I
[22:14] Speaker 2: am so excited about Marissa's item because it is the
[22:16] Speaker 2: Holy Grail, but she's found us some stylish versions.
[22:37] Speaker 3: It's very expensive, I wondred.
[22:43] Speaker 2: So everyone's favorite part of the show, Boogie to Budget,
[22:46] Speaker 2: where we each bring three things of the one item,
[22:49] Speaker 2: you know, varying price points, and we say why we
[22:51] Speaker 2: think they're great. I have not loved an item more
[22:55] Speaker 2: that you're about to tell us about. No one has
[22:57] Speaker 2: done this before and it is fantastic, So I think
[22:59] Speaker 2: you should go first. What's your atom.
[23:02] Speaker 4: So elastic waste pants which don't sound terribly sexy, but
[23:06] Speaker 4: they are so practical. They're definitely trending the spring summer,
[23:10] Speaker 4: so they will be everywhere in lieu of skirts. A
[23:14] Speaker 4: lightweight cotton, straight leg pant okay does wonders and you
[23:18] Speaker 4: can get them now and wear them in winter as well.
[23:21] Speaker 4: I wear some from Assembly label all the time.
[23:25] Speaker 1: You sold me.
[23:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, as someone's sitting here in very high tight,
[23:28] Speaker 2: high waisted jeans that's got a full belly and can't
[23:30] Speaker 2: wait to under my button, I can't wait to hear more.
[23:33] Speaker 1: Let's start at the high end. Let's start at the
[23:34] Speaker 1: bougie yep.
[23:35] Speaker 4: So I think the viral kind of trending ones that
[23:38] Speaker 4: everyone's talking about on subsec and Instagram are the lassette
[23:41] Speaker 4: Kyoto pants.
[23:42] Speaker 1: I don't know that.
[23:43] Speaker 4: So yeah, it's a beautiful basics brand and they seem
[23:48] Speaker 4: really simple, but it's all about the fit and fabric.
[23:50] Speaker 4: They kind of have the perfect straight leg and slight
[23:54] Speaker 4: taper at the ankle, which is really flattering, and they
[23:56] Speaker 4: come in a lot of different colors. They are on
[23:59] Speaker 4: the higher price point, but apparently.
[24:01] Speaker 1: They're worth it. What kind of price are we talking?
[24:03] Speaker 4: I think in Australian dollars they're over four hundreds, so
[24:06] Speaker 4: they are an investment.
[24:07] Speaker 1: Okay, I like it.
[24:08] Speaker 2: They're an investment, all right. Give me something a bit
[24:10] Speaker 2: more affordable. What's your mid range option?
[24:12] Speaker 4: The mid range pair that I would recommend right now
[24:15] Speaker 4: are by Dish, and they're called the Scout barrel leg pants,
[24:18] Speaker 4: but they're actually not super barrel leg they're more of
[24:21] Speaker 4: a straight fit as well, really flattering. The red and
[24:24] Speaker 4: the white are my picks. They're just really saturated, beautiful
[24:27] Speaker 4: color and you can kind of size up to have
[24:30] Speaker 4: a kind of slouchier look or use your regular size.
[24:33] Speaker 3: But they're a really great alternative to the lissette.
[24:36] Speaker 2: A couple of dishes doing redeas out there for Dish
[24:38] Speaker 2: totally yeah exciting.
[24:40] Speaker 1: I mean it's a primary color, but you know it's
[24:41] Speaker 1: not a neutral. So what's the price on the Dish pair?
[24:44] Speaker 4: They are one twenty nine, so still not super cheap,
[24:47] Speaker 4: but much more approachable.
[24:48] Speaker 1: Better way quality as well. Your budget pair? What have
[24:51] Speaker 1: you got there?
[24:52] Speaker 4: So my budget pair is by cotton On. They're called
[24:54] Speaker 4: the Jackson Pants and they actually come in a variety
[24:57] Speaker 4: of colors as well.
[24:58] Speaker 3: I really like the dark green.
[25:00] Speaker 4: They are mostly cotton, so you're still getting the quality there.
[25:03] Speaker 4: I think they have two percent elastic, which allows for
[25:05] Speaker 4: a lot of movement. They're slightly baggier than the other two,
[25:09] Speaker 4: but a great range, and they are a great alternative
[25:12] Speaker 4: to denim. And that's what I would definitely be wearing
[25:15] Speaker 4: right now if I didn't want to wear a pair
[25:16] Speaker 4: of jeans and wanted a bit more comfort.
[25:18] Speaker 2: Okay, that makes sense, and I'm sure they're very affordable, Yeah,
[25:21] Speaker 2: under fifty dollars.
[25:22] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's like you.
[25:23] Speaker 1: Should do this for a job.
[25:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, well, my item is kind of practical, not in color.
[25:29] Speaker 2: But I get to this point of view and I'm
[25:30] Speaker 2: so bored of my wardrobe and what's in stores. Put
[25:33] Speaker 2: just in that dead zone. But spring summer's about to launch,
[25:35] Speaker 2: it's starting to trickle through. I don't wear a lot
[25:38] Speaker 2: of color, although I am wearing burgundy today, but I'm
[25:40] Speaker 2: obsessed with that really deep cobalt blue that's kind of
[25:44] Speaker 2: popping up everywhere. And the practical side of me loves
[25:47] Speaker 2: just kind of like a wind breaker or like a
[25:48] Speaker 2: jacket to throw on to go to pick up or
[25:50] Speaker 2: whatever it may be.
[25:51] Speaker 1: So I've got three bright.
[25:53] Speaker 2: Blue sort of sport lux jackets, and my most expensive
[25:58] Speaker 2: is from Zara, so it's that bad. It's the Zara
[26:01] Speaker 2: z W Collection Bomber jacket. It's one hundred and eighty
[26:04] Speaker 2: five dollars, but it's just this really cool coboat blue,
[26:07] Speaker 2: sort of like a sporty cush I don't really know
[26:11] Speaker 2: what real sports jackets look like, but it gives me
[26:14] Speaker 2: that kind of vibe.
[26:15] Speaker 1: Next one down Mango.
[26:17] Speaker 2: So this one's on the Iconic because the Iconic stocks
[26:20] Speaker 2: a smaller collection than you know Mango online, but.
[26:23] Speaker 1: This is great.
[26:24] Speaker 2: So it's the Mango high Collar jacket, same color, one
[26:26] Speaker 2: hundred and fifty nine ninety five. Or there's also a
[26:29] Speaker 2: great one on Asos. This one's sort of a bit
[26:32] Speaker 2: more bubbly.
[26:32] Speaker 1: But still bombery.
[26:33] Speaker 2: It's kind of like a bomber sport windbreaker hybrid Aceos
[26:38] Speaker 2: design oversized bubble hem It's not too bubbly though, because
[26:41] Speaker 2: I'm not into bubbles. Track a jacket in Colbo ninety
[26:45] Speaker 2: five dollars and I think the joy of shopping on
[26:47] Speaker 2: aesos too, I find is that oftentimes those brands all
[26:50] Speaker 2: are kind of having something similar it because their original
[26:53] Speaker 2: sites opposite will get to buy their season that's just
[26:56] Speaker 2: finished that we're going into. Does that make sense Yeah,
[26:59] Speaker 2: not always, but they also have good sales like.
[27:01] Speaker 3: Sixty seventy Yeah by off season is great.
[27:04] Speaker 2: This is great, And I think for a color like
[27:06] Speaker 2: that that I would probably flog for like three or
[27:08] Speaker 2: four months, but then I don't know what would happen
[27:11] Speaker 2: to it. Then I'd be very organized like you and
[27:13] Speaker 2: sell it.
[27:14] Speaker 1: Oh we You're so wonderful. Thank you for being so
[27:16] Speaker 1: helpful and pragmatic.
[27:17] Speaker 2: That was everything I needed to hear and now I
[27:19] Speaker 2: just need to put it in action.
[27:21] Speaker 3: Thank you so much.
