[13:59] Speaker 2: I sat tempo and Campo mac starts being mane.
[14:13] Speaker 6: Are you I'm doing great?
[14:14] Speaker 4: Guys?
[14:14] Speaker 6: So moui bien I guess would be the proper phrasing
[14:17] Speaker 6: on that one. Uh.
[14:18] Speaker 7: Not happy to be here, and of course here at Steelers'
[14:21] Speaker 7: training camp twenty twenty.
[14:22] Speaker 6: Five, it's it's special.
[14:24] Speaker 7: It's a special place, and I know we're closing it down,
[14:27] Speaker 7: but this is where champions are made. Every single Super
[14:30] Speaker 7: Bowl champion has started here. So there's something special about
[14:34] Speaker 7: coming to Pittsburgh, coming to Le Trope and Saint Vincent's College.
[14:38] Speaker 3: Now, this idea that you hear players say it every year,
[14:41] Speaker 3: You lived through it, the idea of camaraderie, chemistry, bonding.
[14:46] Speaker 4: What is that like? How does that work?
[14:49] Speaker 7: So the first thing is you take everything that's comfortable
[14:53] Speaker 7: and known and you flip it on his head. You
[14:55] Speaker 7: remove guys out of all of the comforts of home.
[14:58] Speaker 7: You stick them in dorm rooms, which essentially up here
[15:00] Speaker 7: for cement walls. You may or may not have a
[15:03] Speaker 7: roommate in there, but you will have a suite mate
[15:06] Speaker 7: that will be across and you'll share a bathroom together,
[15:08] Speaker 7: so you'll learn about sharing his caring at this point, almost.
[15:11] Speaker 6: Like a relationship.
[15:12] Speaker 7: But you put guys in these environments because there's not
[15:16] Speaker 7: a lot of frills here.
[15:17] Speaker 6: There's not a lot of stuff accessible to them except
[15:19] Speaker 6: for each other.
[15:20] Speaker 7: So that's where the bonding begins for this team, and
[15:23] Speaker 7: you start to see what it means to be a
[15:26] Speaker 7: stealer because you have no place to hide.
[15:29] Speaker 6: Anybody can come to your room.
[15:30] Speaker 7: As Aaron Rodgers talked about a lot of times are
[15:33] Speaker 7: out camp guys would just knock and walk in, or
[15:35] Speaker 7: Bencecronic would not even knock, he just walk in. But
[15:38] Speaker 7: being accessible getting to know these guys, get to know
[15:40] Speaker 7: their stories, because that's really what makes the fabric of
[15:43] Speaker 7: a team, is the intimate knowledge of one another. Even
[15:46] Speaker 7: though you are held together by that one common goal,
[15:49] Speaker 7: which is to hold.
[15:50] Speaker 2: Up of a party trophy, you have a lot of
[15:52] Speaker 2: stories here, tell us about one that you remember. And
[15:55] Speaker 2: it's like crazy because with so many camps and every day,
[16:00] Speaker 2: like you have experiences on every day. So it's when
[16:03] Speaker 2: you when you finished that training covery, like, oh my gosh,
[16:05] Speaker 2: I had five stories around this.
[16:07] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[16:07] Speaker 7: No, it's like almost like you know, you know how
[16:09] Speaker 7: you get those albums, right, you get the photo books
[16:11] Speaker 7: and you pair this is what happened in my year.
[16:15] Speaker 6: You could do that with camp every single day.
[16:17] Speaker 7: And I think for me when I was a player
[16:19] Speaker 7: that was sweating down on that field, bleeding on that
[16:21] Speaker 7: field even a.
[16:22] Speaker 6: Couple of times it is hot, But what I remember most.
[16:26] Speaker 7: Is being up in the in the dorm rooms and
[16:29] Speaker 7: the experience that you had just sitting around what we
[16:31] Speaker 7: called the stoop, which was right outside overlooking the baseball field,
[16:35] Speaker 7: and guys just kind of just congregating there, whether it
[16:38] Speaker 7: was playing cards under the tent, whether it was going
[16:42] Speaker 7: to somebody's room and having a FIFA tournament, because FIFA
[16:45] Speaker 7: was huge back when I played Call of Duty. Like
[16:47] Speaker 7: we found these we would get competitive about checkers and
[16:50] Speaker 7: Connect four. Like, if you've ever wanted to see the
[16:53] Speaker 7: spirit of competition, throw a Connect four board out there
[16:56] Speaker 7: and just see what happens. That's kind of what we
[16:58] Speaker 7: were able to do. That's what I remember. I remember
[17:00] Speaker 7: those fun competitive moments where you could just be just
[17:05] Speaker 7: trying to get your mind off of how bad my
[17:06] Speaker 7: practice was that day, or what count I messed up on,
[17:10] Speaker 7: or if I got beat. You get up there, all
[17:12] Speaker 7: of that washes away and now it's the next competition.
[17:15] Speaker 7: And that's why I love about it. You would get
[17:17] Speaker 7: the most unlikeliest combos of guys getting together and just
[17:21] Speaker 7: communing to where you know, now, I've been retired from
[17:23] Speaker 7: here what twelve years now, and I still call these
[17:27] Speaker 7: guys my brothers. When I see Taylor up in the
[17:29] Speaker 7: scouting room or I see an IT guest intern like
[17:31] Speaker 7: Willie Cologne coming in, or Trey Essex, Russell Stuven's like,
[17:36] Speaker 7: we all shared something really really special over our time here,
[17:39] Speaker 7: no matter how long or how short, will always be
[17:42] Speaker 7: bonded by this experience.
[17:43] Speaker 6: And this is what these guys will continue. This has
[17:45] Speaker 6: been here since nineteen sixty.
[17:46] Speaker 7: Six and it will continue until otherwise noted going for
[17:51] Speaker 7: the next generation of players that come through the Pittsburgh Steelers.
[17:54] Speaker 4: How it yesterday it was the Humbrun Derby here, So
[17:57] Speaker 4: it's that competition.
[17:58] Speaker 5: That was starting doing the Home Run Derby back in
[18:01] Speaker 5: the day.
[18:01] Speaker 7: I made finalists one year. Oh, I did make the
[18:04] Speaker 7: finals one year. Ben of course. I mean he's great
[18:07] Speaker 7: at everything. I mean you put a basketball hoop out there,
[18:09] Speaker 7: you put a basically start throwing a baseball, darts, pool, shuffleboard,
[18:13] Speaker 7: whatever bid was that the.
[18:14] Speaker 6: Best at it.
[18:15] Speaker 7: But I was like, I was happy to make it
[18:16] Speaker 7: in the top three one year in the Home Run Derby,
[18:19] Speaker 7: and I will always hold that special because that's back
[18:21] Speaker 7: when we still played it as a softball game and
[18:23] Speaker 7: then you had the Derby afterwards, so it was pretty cool.
[18:26] Speaker 5: You lift through this for over a decade.
[18:30] Speaker 3: Coaches get to you in mini camps, OTAs but when
[18:33] Speaker 3: they get you here, they're trying to obviously make sure
[18:36] Speaker 3: that everything's executed.
[18:38] Speaker 5: Well.
[18:38] Speaker 3: What's the tone and the pressure and the attitude you
[18:42] Speaker 3: get from the coaching staff while you're here that you
[18:45] Speaker 3: may not necessarily see as the season starts and moves
[18:49] Speaker 3: forward forward.
[18:50] Speaker 7: I think the biggest thing that you will see here
[18:53] Speaker 7: versus you get in the regular season is going to
[18:55] Speaker 7: be it's okay to make a mistake once, don't make
[18:58] Speaker 7: it twice.
[19:00] Speaker 6: Allowed the ability to mess up.
[19:02] Speaker 7: That's what training camps for, right You're allowed to try
[19:05] Speaker 7: things new and figure out what you can and can
[19:07] Speaker 7: and get away with, like creating border walls. But once
[19:10] Speaker 7: you figure out where the one border is, don't go
[19:12] Speaker 7: near that border again. Stay in your lane and continue
[19:15] Speaker 7: to progress forward. If you keep bumping sideways, you're not
[19:19] Speaker 7: helping the rest of the team progress. So that was
[19:21] Speaker 7: the biggest thing that I learned here was making sure
[19:23] Speaker 7: that you can make one mistake, don't make two of
[19:26] Speaker 7: the same variety.
[19:28] Speaker 2: And always there are some stories and moments that highlights
[19:32] Speaker 2: a training camp like this. You can see fire its
[19:35] Speaker 2: sometimes you can see opportunities to make big plays and
[19:39] Speaker 2: a player that nobody knows him goes there and with
[19:43] Speaker 2: his spotlight and what do you see this year calling
[19:47] Speaker 2: for the big story of the training come now that
[19:49] Speaker 2: he ends.
[19:50] Speaker 7: I think the biggest story coming out of here is
[19:52] Speaker 7: going to be the depth of the Steelers was more
[19:54] Speaker 7: than we expected because you look at every position group,
[19:58] Speaker 7: You go down the line, and you have plenty of dbs.
[20:01] Speaker 7: You have some good dbs that are going to be
[20:03] Speaker 7: cut here that are going to go on to other
[20:05] Speaker 7: teams and play. You have outside linebackers who are also
[20:09] Speaker 7: going to be good enough to play in the league,
[20:10] Speaker 7: but not.
[20:11] Speaker 6: For this team. Inside linebacker as well. Offensive line. I've
[20:15] Speaker 6: really enjoyed the depth of the offensive line this year. Quarterback,
[20:18] Speaker 6: even we just saw in a.
[20:20] Speaker 7: Game Saturday night, a fourth stream quarterback put on a
[20:22] Speaker 7: show against the first and second team units of Jacksonville.
[20:27] Speaker 6: Guess what if I'm the Jacksonville.
[20:28] Speaker 7: Jaguars, I'm looking up saying, why do I have Nick Mullens,
[20:31] Speaker 7: Skyler Thompson.
[20:32] Speaker 6: Nick Mullen, Skyler Tombs.
[20:34] Speaker 7: There's a lot of teams that are gonna be calling
[20:35] Speaker 7: for Skylar thoms especially after the performance he put on.
[20:37] Speaker 5: Even even the bunter position is up for graps.
[20:40] Speaker 3: Yeah, how predictable is what you see in training camp?
[20:45] Speaker 3: How much does it allow you to say they should
[20:47] Speaker 3: have a good season or is it just free season?
[20:50] Speaker 5: As everybody says, it's really not the real deal. Once
[20:53] Speaker 5: you get into the real deal, you find out more
[20:55] Speaker 5: about your team.
[20:55] Speaker 3: How predictable, how much can you say from what I'm
[20:58] Speaker 3: looking at, this team should have this.
[21:01] Speaker 7: I think you could probably glean about sixty percent of
[21:03] Speaker 7: your expectation from here, just because when you see the execution,
[21:08] Speaker 7: when you see the comfortability, the chemistry start to build
[21:11] Speaker 7: out there. The guys you know, for me as an
[21:13] Speaker 7: offensive lineman, right see twist recognitions, one of the easiest things,
[21:16] Speaker 7: Right guy slants, a guy loops around.
[21:19] Speaker 6: How fast you guys react to that.
[21:21] Speaker 7: Those are the little things you look at like that
[21:23] Speaker 7: tracks that carries into the season because that means those
[21:26] Speaker 7: guys are on the same page and they're feeling the
[21:28] Speaker 7: same thing.
[21:28] Speaker 6: The same thing with the defense.
[21:30] Speaker 7: When you get a blitz package and everybody just kind
[21:33] Speaker 7: of knows and knows the flow, you'll see guys running
[21:35] Speaker 7: into each other because it's a brand new system. That's
[21:38] Speaker 7: when you kind of know, Okay, I'm not saying this
[21:41] Speaker 7: is a Super Bowl Championship. But I am saying this
[21:44] Speaker 7: is the proper ingredients that should be going into this
[21:46] Speaker 7: gumbo called a successful season.
[21:49] Speaker 2: And to be a contender. I mean, yeah, last time
[21:51] Speaker 2: when we wear tea on three ten on three, that
[21:54] Speaker 2: was part of what you were building. Obviously with the
[21:56] Speaker 2: last games everything changed. But how how do you see
[22:00] Speaker 2: this this team with the energy that then the chemistry
[22:05] Speaker 2: that they are building to keep strong until until the end,
[22:08] Speaker 2: because we're gonna have the buy on the Wig five
[22:10] Speaker 2: so that that moment when you need to turn the
[22:13] Speaker 2: turn out the season right to the Yeah.
[22:16] Speaker 6: Yeah, And I think that's that's where I think the
[22:18] Speaker 6: depth comes in.
[22:19] Speaker 7: You know, having quality depth and guys who can start
[22:24] Speaker 7: and as Mike Tomlin likes to call them, starters in waiting.
[22:27] Speaker 7: I think that's where you'll see that type of thing
[22:29] Speaker 7: because Atricia is gonna trickle in. That's that's no doubt
[22:32] Speaker 7: about it. We always say it's not a matter of if,
[22:34] Speaker 7: but when guys get injured, and how many at that
[22:37] Speaker 7: position group get injured will really determine the future of
[22:40] Speaker 7: your franchise and the future of that season. But loving
[22:44] Speaker 7: the depth that we have here, loving quote quote unquote
[22:47] Speaker 7: what could potentially be on this practice squad. I think
[22:49] Speaker 7: all of those things play into it. And for the
[22:51] Speaker 7: first time since I've been back for the last five years,
[22:54] Speaker 7: I am really happy with how this team is really situated.
[22:58] Speaker 7: And they have a good problem, a problem that you
[23:00] Speaker 7: don't really hear. A lot of coaches say, oh my goodness,
[23:02] Speaker 7: I have too many good players. No, oh my goodness
[23:04] Speaker 7: said by nobody.
[23:05] Speaker 6: Ever.
[23:06] Speaker 7: That's the problem that they have, and that's a luxury
[23:08] Speaker 7: that these coaches are experiencing right now.
[23:09] Speaker 5: But there is a challenge.
[23:10] Speaker 3: I actually sat down and looked at the construction of
[23:13] Speaker 3: the team in the last I went back twenty some years.
[23:15] Speaker 5: I want you to use your go back, go down
[23:18] Speaker 5: memory lane.
[23:19] Speaker 3: I don't remember seeing so much turnover in the roster
[23:23] Speaker 3: year to year in the history ninety.
[23:26] Speaker 5: Three years of the Pittsburgh Steevers. Yeah, it is crazy.
[23:30] Speaker 5: How do you manage that?
[23:32] Speaker 6: Omark on, That's why he gets paid the big bucks, right, But.
[23:35] Speaker 5: It's one thing to bring them. Then you're gonna make
[23:36] Speaker 5: them play together.
[23:38] Speaker 7: Yeah, And omar Con in each successive year realized his
[23:41] Speaker 7: first year brought in forty five new faces out of
[23:44] Speaker 7: the ninety to come in here. Last year, fifty three
[23:46] Speaker 7: guys were brand new to the Steelers organization and then
[23:50] Speaker 7: now this year forty three new faces. High turnover, But
[23:53] Speaker 7: that's the evolution of this NFL game, right There's a
[23:56] Speaker 7: lot more turnover, a lot more shorter contracts, and you've got.
[23:59] Speaker 6: To figure out who the right pieces are.
[24:01] Speaker 7: And for this year, especially looking at what they did
[24:03] Speaker 7: in free agency, they did something they had never really
[24:05] Speaker 7: done in their franchise history in the modern era. They
[24:08] Speaker 7: went and they attacked free agency. Not just entered free agency,
[24:12] Speaker 7: they attacked it. You started with dk Metcalf, you didn't
[24:16] Speaker 7: stop there. You went for Darius Slave, Brandon Eckles, you
[24:18] Speaker 7: went for Kenneth gain Well, and then, oh, by the way,
[24:22] Speaker 7: the saga finally ended that seemed to be endless, and
[24:26] Speaker 7: you get Aaron Rodgers that you say, you know what,
[24:27] Speaker 7: we're not good with that, we're not good with that,
[24:30] Speaker 7: we need more. Go and get Jalen Ramsey and John
[24:32] Speaker 7: Smith in a trade for Mek Fitzpatrick right before camp.
[24:35] Speaker 7: That's the aggression level we haven't seen. And right now,
[24:38] Speaker 7: looking at those.
[24:39] Speaker 6: Pieces, you feel good about what they did and the
[24:42] Speaker 6: jumps that they took.
[24:43] Speaker 3: All the while not only not handing future draft picks,
[24:46] Speaker 3: but accumulating them.
[24:48] Speaker 5: Yes, yes, this is chess we're watching.
[24:50] Speaker 6: Yes, it's a masterclass and movement.
[24:53] Speaker 7: Because now, whatever happens with Aaron Rodgers this year, you
[24:57] Speaker 7: are now in position. However, it turns out those draft
[25:00] Speaker 7: picks and that quote unquote capital that you have can
[25:04] Speaker 7: get you almost into any team door, in any team
[25:07] Speaker 7: conversation come draft day.
[25:09] Speaker 2: Yeah, and for these guys coming here recently, how to
[25:14] Speaker 2: input the DNA of the series, because that's the way
[25:17] Speaker 2: different when you are if you're drafted, you you can
[25:20] Speaker 2: grow up your career and getting all that, But when
[25:23] Speaker 2: you're getting here from one month ago, it's way different.
[25:25] Speaker 5: Right before we answer that question, I want you, I
[25:28] Speaker 5: want that question. What is the city of the NNA?
[25:31] Speaker 1: What?
[25:31] Speaker 4: What?
[25:32] Speaker 3: In other words, a lot of teams play physical, a
[25:34] Speaker 3: lot of teams play tight.
[25:36] Speaker 5: You want to play for the team. Everybody says that,
[25:39] Speaker 5: what makes it different here?
[25:42] Speaker 3: You actually got to play with another team, not to
[25:43] Speaker 3: not to use them as simple simple comparison, but what
[25:46] Speaker 3: makes it different here? How are people screened? They don't
[25:51] Speaker 3: bring anybody in here? Why why that person and not
[25:54] Speaker 3: that person?
[25:55] Speaker 7: Well, I mean the easiest answer is the timlinism that
[25:58] Speaker 7: we all know the standard is the standard, right, but
[26:01] Speaker 7: what is that standard? That's that's what the common question
[26:04] Speaker 7: is for everybody that embarks upon covering the team, following
[26:09] Speaker 7: the team, and embracing the team.
[26:11] Speaker 6: What is the standard? And why does he always say
[26:14] Speaker 6: the standard is the standard? But the standard is based
[26:17] Speaker 6: on excellence.
[26:18] Speaker 7: And I think Muslimbardi always had that great quote that
[26:21] Speaker 7: talks about, you know, we're always chasing perfection, but you know,
[26:25] Speaker 7: we know we'll never attain it, but at the end
[26:27] Speaker 7: of the day, we will pick up excellence along the way.
[26:30] Speaker 6: That's kind of what that standard is.
[26:31] Speaker 7: When you look at the foundation that the late sixties
[26:33] Speaker 7: and seventies teams laid for what would be the identity
[26:37] Speaker 7: of the Steelers and what was that.
[26:39] Speaker 6: Stop the run and run the ball? That was the identity.
[26:42] Speaker 7: So there's a certain toughness level that comes with that,
[26:44] Speaker 7: There's a physicality, there's a personal nature that it comes with,
[26:48] Speaker 7: and that grit, that determination is what you're looking for.
[26:52] Speaker 7: So when you go and you find let's just take
[26:54] Speaker 7: for example, Jalen Ramsey, like, well, why would Jalen Ramsey
[26:57] Speaker 7: fit here? Because he is he is what Ike Tailor
[26:59] Speaker 7: Effects called a professional gooon, meaning he's gonna chirp, he's
[27:03] Speaker 7: gonna talk, but he's going to back it up. He's
[27:05] Speaker 7: going to fight. He's gonna chase you down. He's not
[27:08] Speaker 7: gonna quit, whether he's blitzing, whether he's covering, or whether
[27:12] Speaker 7: he's sitting in the hole trying to make a tackle.
[27:14] Speaker 7: He's gonna be very physical and abrasive in his approach.
[27:17] Speaker 7: John hus Smith another guy that is very physical, even
[27:21] Speaker 7: though he's not considered a run blocking tight end. The
[27:24] Speaker 7: way he runs, he runs a route and the way
[27:26] Speaker 7: he's gonna finish forward is something that's attractive. When we
[27:29] Speaker 7: got practiced Queen a year ago. A guy who wanted
[27:32] Speaker 7: to talk and wanted to put his face in the fan.
[27:34] Speaker 7: That's what you're looking for. And then of course you drafted.
[27:36] Speaker 7: You drafted. You find these guys to fit your personality
[27:39] Speaker 7: a Progerck Jones, for instance, physical demanding, he looks the part,
[27:44] Speaker 7: but yet he's gonna be in your face and sometimes
[27:46] Speaker 7: you might get a penalty. Darnauld Washington just insert definition
[27:50] Speaker 7: of what a steeler looks like. It's humungous and menacing
[27:55] Speaker 7: and can still dunk a football, you know, dunkle football
[27:57] Speaker 7: through an upright with three hundred plus pounds. That's what
[28:00] Speaker 7: you're looking for. That's the grit, the toughness. But to
[28:03] Speaker 7: go about every day with the blue collar mentality to
[28:06] Speaker 7: know that like a TJ. Watt, Like even though he's
[28:08] Speaker 7: not practicing, he's doing something. He is always actively practicing
[28:13] Speaker 7: a skill set. When he's sitting out of practice, everybody's
[28:16] Speaker 7: sitting on the bench. Him and Cam Heyward running the
[28:18] Speaker 7: hula hoops. They're doing all of these different things to
[28:20] Speaker 7: get themselves better. And I think that's what you have
[28:22] Speaker 7: to be a self motivated person to be a Pittsburgh Steeler.
[28:24] Speaker 7: To go back to his question, how does that instill?
[28:27] Speaker 3: Is it the coaching staff or is it the veteran
[28:29] Speaker 3: that tells the young player, you know what, this is
[28:31] Speaker 3: the way we roll here.
[28:32] Speaker 5: This is the way we do things here.
[28:34] Speaker 6: Yeah.
[28:34] Speaker 7: I think it's a mix of both. But the biggest
[28:36] Speaker 7: impact is the player. Like seeing the physical embodiment in
[28:41] Speaker 7: your player room. You're looking at Okay, if I'm a
[28:43] Speaker 7: defensive lineman, we'll shoot. Cam Hayward's doing it. Why am
[28:45] Speaker 7: I not doing that?
[28:46] Speaker 5: Right?
[28:46] Speaker 6: He's been in the league fourteen years.
[28:48] Speaker 7: I've only been here three years or I've been here
[28:50] Speaker 7: a day, like I need to do what he's doing,
[28:52] Speaker 7: I mean, because obviously it's worked out for him. TJ
[28:54] Speaker 7: Watt the same way Jack Sawyer has been attached at
[28:57] Speaker 7: the hip of TJ and Nick Herbik, trying to fit
[29:00] Speaker 7: out what that is for the offense of mine, following
[29:02] Speaker 7: Isaac c Amalu and seeing what he's doing, trying to
[29:04] Speaker 7: create that identity for themselves. But then you have some
[29:07] Speaker 7: guys like and Aaron Rodgers, just like resume speaks for itself.
[29:10] Speaker 6: I don't got to do anything.
[29:11] Speaker 7: If I'm Will Howard, I'm just mimicking everything that he does.
[29:15] Speaker 7: I'm at his hip. I'm asking question. In fact, when
[29:18] Speaker 7: he's saying open door policy, I walked in with him
[29:20] Speaker 7: so I didn't have to knock on the door. That's
[29:22] Speaker 7: the type of mentality you want to.
[29:23] Speaker 4: Have because starts and thank you Max to being here.
[29:32] Speaker 5: My pleasure is always, guys, And I should add Max
[29:38] Speaker 5: Mexico yea.
