[0:00] One time I came up with this, The four ifs that make life
[0:03] worthwhile. I think I got this when I was in
[0:06] the Carmel Library, Carmel, CA, one of my favorite places to
[0:12] study and do a bit of research. And I remember that day when I
[0:19] put this together, The four ifs that make life worthwhile.
[0:23] Speaking of preparation, here's what I said.
[0:27] The four ifs are #1 if you learn, that makes life
[0:32] worthwhile. You've got to learn.
[0:34] You've got to learn what it's all about.
[0:36] You've got to learn what's going on.
[0:39] You learn by trying. You learn by error.
[0:43] You learn by doing it right. You learn by doing it wrong.
[0:45] You learn from other people's experiences.
[0:48] There's all kinds of ways to learn.
[0:50] Never cease your quest for learning.
[0:53] Never stop learning. It makes life worthwhile if you
[0:57] learn. Then I said the second if that
[1:00] makes life worthwhile is if you try.
[1:05] You've got to do something with what you've learned.
[1:10] See if you can raise a garden. See if you can start a business.
[1:14] See how quickly you can get promoted.
[1:17] See if you can move up in the next income bracket.
[1:19] See how much you can give away and still have plenty left.
[1:24] See how much you can do. Try it.
[1:28] Just try. We're always telling the kids,
[1:30] right, try it, try it. Kids says, well, I'm not sure.
[1:33] Say, well, how are we going to know?
[1:34] You got to try. Quick pause.
[1:37] Inspiration feels powerful until Monday hits.
[1:40] Most people don't lack ambition, they lack a system that executes
[1:44] when motivation disappears. That's why we built the
[1:47] self-discipline playbook. Clear rules, daily execution, no
[1:51] mood required. If you're serious about results,
[1:54] not just ideas, the link is in the description.
[1:57] Install the structure. Watch your standards rise.
[2:04] If I put these two poles up, put a bar across here 2 feet high,
[2:07] say to the kids who can jump 2 feet, someone says, I don't
[2:12] know. So well, how are we going to
[2:13] know you just got to back up and take a run at it?
[2:18] Now what if you knock the bar down?
[2:19] Does that mean you can't jump 2 feet?
[2:23] No. So then what do we say?
[2:27] Try it again. That's what Chuff said to me.
[2:31] Keep trying, he said. There's more than one way up the
[2:33] mountain. Sneak up the back if you have
[2:37] to. Keep trying.
[2:40] Keep trying. So that's the second.
[2:42] If that makes life worthwhile, if you try it over, try it
[2:45] again, try it another way, but keep trying.
[2:49] The third, if that makes life worthwhile, is if you stay
[2:55] developing staying power. That's one of the big challenges
[2:57] of life. Some people plant in the spring
[2:59] and leave in the summer. They don't stay.
[3:09] Or the guy builds foundation, right, got a nice foundation,
[3:13] then he goes off and builds another foundation and then he
[3:17] leaves. That one goes off, builds
[3:18] another foundation. He's got these foundations
[3:20] scattered all across the country.
[3:24] I've done my share of that. Not staying to finish it and put
[3:29] it together and put the roof on, put the last brick in place,
[3:33] light the fireplace, have a party, celebrate finishing
[3:38] something. Stay.
[3:41] You got to stay. We asked one of my good friends,
[3:48] Jim Cardwell, in Phoenix one time.
[3:51] I said, Jim, what are you good at?
[3:53] He said starting over. So that's one of my better
[3:58] things, starting over. He's a character.
[4:07] Asked him if he was good at any particular sport and he said
[4:09] yes. Skating on thin ice.
[4:17] OK, third, if that makes life worthwhile is if you stay.
[4:20] Here's the 4th, 1/4. If that makes life worthwhile is
[4:22] if you care. The incredible capacity for
[4:28] humans to care. But if you care, if you care at
[4:33] all, you'll get some results. If you care enough, you'll get
[4:36] incredible results. Now, that wasn't too complicated
[4:45] to speech, right? Just four simple ifs that make
[4:47] life worthwhile. But it does take some time.
[4:50] Take some research consciously, get your notepad out, get your
[4:54] journal, read the books. But now, then, even though you
[4:58] don't have a speech to give, just get ready for tomorrow's
[5:01] conversations today. Get ready for next month, this
[5:04] month. Get ready for next year.
[5:07] This year, always be a day ahead and a step ahead and a year
[5:11] ahead in your research and your development in researching your
[5:15] own feelings and life and what's going on.
[5:18] So that no matter what conversation comes up, what
[5:20] chance to communicate comes up, whether it's a business
[5:22] communication or a personal communication, whether it's
[5:25] social, whatever it is, you'll be more ready for it a few
[5:28] months from now than perhaps you are now just because you're
[5:31] doing it deliberately and consciously.
