[0:00] Here's one of the greatest gifts all of us have, our language,
[0:03] our ability to speak, our ability to frame words into such
[0:08] a way that we create images and pictures.
[0:11] Help someone to understand, help someone to become educated, help
[0:14] someone to see what they couldn't see before.
[0:17] It's almost God like in power. I've got 4 steps to achieve good
[0:21] communication. Let's just do the fundamentals
[0:24] here. There's not very many in fact
[0:28] there's not very many fundamentals to anything just a
[0:30] few handful 678 here's the first step to achieve good
[0:34] communications number one have something good to say that's
[0:38] step number one. It's fairly obvious to have
[0:43] something good to say. Try to recall and remember and
[0:46] take notes. Keep journal, whatever of your
[0:49] experiences. Because as you live your life,
[0:52] you're going to have something good to say.
[0:54] One from your failures, 2 from your successes.
[0:58] You're going to have something better to say from the mistakes
[1:00] you've made and how you corrected it and bailed yourself
[1:03] out. And sometimes, instead of just
[1:05] registering it in your head, why not commit it to paper so that
[1:09] it gets logged, it gets recorded, and someday you can
[1:13] use it for the future. Have something good to say.
[1:20] The key to speaking well, the key to excellent communications
[1:24] is preparation. Actually, all of our life is
[1:28] preparing this year, preparing for the next.
[1:30] Those first what, 8-9 grades? Preparing for high school, then
[1:34] high school. Preparing for college, college
[1:37] and university. Preparing for a career, a career
[1:40] to earn money, then preparing to make the investments to keep you
[1:43] safe and secure. Build a financial wall around
[1:46] your family. Nothing can get through always
[1:50] preparing for those steps and stages in our life.
[1:54] That's part of the game of life for humans.
[1:57] It seems like it takes us longer to prepare.
[2:00] When the little wildebeest is born, it only has about one hour
[2:06] to get ready to run with the herd and escape the lions.
[2:09] One hour. So the little wildebeest, as
[2:13] soon as it's born, tries to stand up, falls down.
[2:15] It's mother nudges it. Stand up, stand up, falls down.
[2:19] Stand up. Come on, try again.
[2:21] Why such urgency? The lions.
[2:24] The lions are not very far away. Come on, come on, come on.
[2:35] And within less than an hour. Within less than an hour, the
[2:39] little wildebeest, brand new, just born, is now strong enough
[2:43] to run with the herd and escape the lions.
[2:47] Less than an hour. Human babies take a little
[2:51] longer. After 17 years, we're not quite
[2:54] sure they can escape all the lions and have a safe place to
[3:00] go. So preparation.
[3:02] Getting ready sometimes seems so laborious.
[3:06] After going to grade one, now you got to go to grade 2.
[3:09] After grade 2, it's grade 3. Will it never end?
[3:14] Come on. One more grade.
[3:16] Grade 4 and then 5. Wow, seems like it takes us
[3:21] forever to finally get ready, you know, to design A life and
[3:25] get married and have a family and a career and fortune and
[3:28] future. But it takes preparation now to
[3:33] communicate. Well.
[3:34] Here's some good words to prepare for communication #1
[3:39] interest. Just keep your interest alive in
[3:43] people and places. If you'll develop an interest in
[3:46] all of that when it's right side up and when it's upside down,
[3:51] take a keen interest in the politics of the day and the
[3:55] speeches and all that's happening.
[3:58] It gives you good stuff to debate and decide where do you
[4:02] stand on the major issues, not only the political issues, but
[4:06] the major life issues. Be that kind of be that
[4:10] interested in life and people. So underline the word life and
[4:13] people. That's the whole study life.
[4:17] Study life in all of its twists and turns.
[4:20] Study people in all of their variety.
[4:24] In being in an enterprise that you know, where you have to
[4:27] employ people, get people to work with you, that's a
[4:29] challenge. Different ages, different
[4:33] different opinions, different personalities, different
[4:35] temperaments. Here's one of the skills I
[4:38] learned that paid me big money, getting people to work together
[4:41] and see if they're all different in a whole variety.
[4:44] How do you get them all to work together?
[4:45] I'm telling you, it's not easy. It is a challenge organizing,
[4:49] getting people to work together, but the pay, the paycheck, it's
[4:52] unbelievable. Now, if you're working with
[4:56] independent people, then it really is challenging.
[4:58] It's like herding cats. Did you ever try that?
[5:05] Herding sheep is easy. They all quickly get going the
[5:09] same direction very quickly. Cats.
[5:12] No way. If you've got 8 cats, how many
[5:15] directions are they going? 8 different directions.
[5:19] But if you can master herding cats, I promise you a paycheck
[5:24] like you cannot believe. Here's what's interesting about
[5:29] people. The ones who should do it the
[5:30] most are inclined the least. How come they can't see it?
[5:35] I don't know. I can see it.
[5:37] They can't see it. Maybe right now they're not
[5:40] supposed to see it. That that's the best.
[5:42] I said sometimes you just got to take the easier way out.
[5:47] I don't know if that's an easier way out than to try to explain
[5:50] it all. That's just the way it is.
[5:52] Somebody you thought was going to stay, they leave.
[5:55] Here's what you have to learn to say.
[5:56] Isn't that interesting? Wow.
[6:00] And somebody that you thought was going to leave?
[6:02] What, they stay and you say, I wouldn't have thought that in
[6:06] 100 years there's a surprise a day waiting for you working with
[6:11] people. And then some people are nice
[6:15] and some people are not so nice, but there's only a few.
[6:19] When I first started in sales, Mr. Shoaf, my mentor, said,
[6:23] here's the good news, Mr. Owen, there's only 9 or 10 real nasty,
[6:28] miserable, horrible people in the world.
[6:31] That's what he said. Now, he said they move around a
[6:34] lot and you're liable to get one once in a while.
[6:40] But when you do, you just say, hey, there's only nine more like
[6:42] you. I can handle that the rest of my
[6:44] life. That was really good.
[6:46] And then sometimes you got to try a little wit and a little
[6:48] humor. That helps.
[6:51] When I first started traveling with Mark Hughes and Herbalife
[6:54] 21 years ago, one of my friends said to me, I heard some people
[6:59] died using that product and I said not that many.
[7:04] Now it was a silly comment that he made, so I had to think up a
[7:07] silly answer. You can't give a, you know, an
[7:12] honest answer. You know a good answer to a
[7:14] silly comment. I said, I understand as long as
[7:17] the deaths are under 100 a month, they get to keep selling
[7:19] the product. If the numbers go over 100, they
[7:23] have to come in for a review. Now, that was all silly
[7:26] nonsense, but he deserved it, right?
[7:28] His silly comment. I don't know.
[7:30] Use a little humor. Somebody says this isn't going
[7:33] to work for me. Say it was designed not to work
[7:35] for some people. I don't know what?
[7:37] What do I know? You know, what can I say?
[7:41] I'm not a genius to figure this stuff out.
[7:45] He's a student of life and people and all the varieties and
[7:49] what's happening in the world. It's an interesting place to
[7:52] live, and while you're here, learn all you can, study all you
[7:56] can. Like the varieties.
[7:59] Some people are easy and some are miserable.
[8:02] Just learn how to handle all that.
[8:04] Here's the next word to communicate well, and that's
[8:06] fascination. It goes the step beyond just
[8:08] interest. Be like a child fascinated with
[8:11] everything. Next, sensitivity, trying to
[8:17] understand where people are, where they're coming from, the
[8:19] position they might be in at the moment, trying to understand.
[8:24] A night visits us all after days, and some winters are tough
[8:28] and some people are having tough times.
[8:31] Be sensitive to all that. Next is simply knowledge.
[8:36] Just gather every idea you can. That makes you a better
[8:39] communicator. The storyteller tells us in the
[8:44] beginning God spoke and said let there be light, and there was
[8:49] light, giving us the indication that God's words can create
[8:54] light. But now make this note, there's
[9:00] more than one kind of light. Wow.
[9:05] Next to the power of God creating light by his own words
[9:09] is the power of all of us creating sight, which is light
[9:15] in a form, helping somebody to see by using our language the
[9:21] best we know how. What if somebody can't see, how
[9:27] they could possibly be successful?
[9:29] And you came along and told them your story, choosing the best
[9:34] words you possibly could. And when you finished your story
[9:39] they said, now I can see. Before you got here, I was
[9:43] blind, couldn't see. Now that you've shared with me,
[9:48] by your language, your story, now I can see.
[9:53] Before you got here I was in the dark, and it seemed to me like
[9:56] while you were talking, some things dawned on me.
[10:00] Isn't that a good expression? Some things dawned on me like
[10:03] the sun started coming up and the more you talked, the further
[10:09] up the sun came and the brighter got the images and the
[10:13] imagination, helping people to see.
[10:18] That's one of the greatest gifts, the best wit in the world
[10:21] was Winston Churchill, right? Lady Aster in the English
[10:26] Parliament, exasperated one day with Winston Churchill.
[10:29] She said, Winston, if you were my husband, I'd put poison in
[10:32] your coffee. He said, Lady Aster, if you were
[10:34] my wife, I would drink it now, whatever it takes.
[10:43] Don't let anybody put you down. Words are so powerful if they're
[10:47] framed right, if they're sent with sincerity.
[10:52] Words that create images, words that express life, words that
[10:55] express experiences, words that express gifts of ideas that
[11:01] you've got to share. See that's that's some of the
[11:04] greatest gifts you can bestow. And here's the best place to
[11:08] start with your children. See if you can't inspire with
[11:12] your own language. A better sense of the importance
[11:16] of the day. A better sense of the importance
[11:18] of doing the work. A better sense of the importance
[11:20] of getting good grades, developing yourself, becoming
[11:23] who you'd like to become. Do the disciplines now that'll
[11:26] give you the joy later. Teaching is one of the greatest
[11:30] senses of accomplishment in the world.
[11:32] Helping somebody learn. Helping somebody take early
[11:36] steps in a new career, early steps as an entrepreneur,
[11:42] showing somebody the way, The gift of words, the gift of
[11:47] language. Here's what the old prophet
[11:49] said. Words are like a lamp for your
[11:53] feet so you can see where to walk.
[11:58] That's a gift. And then he said words are also
[12:02] like a light for your pathway so you can see where to go.
[12:08] If somebody with the gift of language and words can help you
[12:11] to walk or you should walk and then show you a pathway to go.
[12:17] They do you immeasurable service.
[12:20] Who can calculate the value and the worth of that kind of
[12:24] exercise, Showing somebody the steps to take and showing
[12:29] somebody the way to go. That would be helpful.
[12:34] Whether it's a way of good health, whether it's a way of a
[12:36] better relationship, whether it's a way of an entrepreneur, a
[12:40] refinement of career. Doesn't matter what it is if we
[12:43] know the steps and somebody reveals to us the way.
[12:48] See they do us by their own language.
[12:51] Some of the greatest gifts we ever enjoy.
[12:54] If this message woke something up in you, don't let it fade.
[12:59] Discipline is what separates people who listen from people
[13:02] who win. The self-discipline Hacks
[13:05] Playbook shows you exactly how to build it.
