William Afton, the man behind the slaughter. The main antagonist behind almost every dark deception within Five Nights at Freddy's. From his early appearances as the Purple Guy in FNAF 2, to his grotesque resurrection as Springtrap, and as the cunning corporate figurehead of Fazbear Entertainment, Afton has taken on many forms—but all serve one purpose: control, power, and satisfying his own twisted sense of pleasure. But beneath the jump scares and lore, is there a deeper theme to his character? A cautionary tale from his decade-long performance of embodying envy, pride, and arrogance—a worldview poisoned by the belief that one is entitled to power, legacy, and dominion. The Spirit of Cain—destroying what he cannot possess, and damning all who stand in his way. Will you follow us Into the Night? [0:00] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The following episode contains biblical discourse and theological interpretation.
[0:04] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The views expressed are my own and represent a personal reading of scripture intended for narrative and analytical purposes within the context of this discussion.
[0:17] \[SPEAKER_02\]: This is not a definitive or doctrinal teaching and listeners are encouraged to engage critically and explore these themes further according to their own beliefs and understandings.
[0:29] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The word discretion is advised.
[0:48] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Hello and welcome to Into the Night, a Five Nights of Ferties podcast.
[0:55] \[SPEAKER_02\]: I am your host Nick.
[0:58] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And thank you so much for listening.
[1:02] \[SPEAKER_02\]: In my time of analyzing funits at Freddy's, I have always spoken at length of the importance of viewing the series from a narrative lens.
[1:11] \[SPEAKER_02\]: While the series may have begun as a grand puzzle, with elusive steps to uncover the treasure that was promised at the conclusion of the mystery.
[1:20] \[SPEAKER_02\]: After a decade has passed, the series is expanded into a more traditional narrative journey, still with its own quirks and charms that we love.
[1:31] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Sometimes, but no longer is there any occupation on the who, the what, and the when of the purple guy, the missing children's incident, or the night guard's motives.
[1:44] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Secret still linger.
[1:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And thin-ath, like light, is not replete with answers.
[1:50] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But the story itself is well known, at least in terms of Scott Coffin's golden age material.
[1:58] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But if there is one key aspect that no theorist, content creator, or whichever title you give to those who inspect an attempt to be an orator for the lore and story of Scott's ten years of work of blood and gears, tend to discuss, it would be the meta narrative.
[2:16] \[SPEAKER_02\]: We talk at links of the symbolic meaning behind such things as the eight-bit mini-games, or the implications of colors and characters tied to their metaphoric meaning in terms of the lore.
[2:28] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But what are the deeper themes?
[2:31] \[SPEAKER_02\]: What of the moral framework that built the foundation of the story?
[2:34] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And what are we supposed to take away from and inspire us with, through the art?
[2:39] \[SPEAKER_02\]: I have always believed that an artist work always holds an underlying meaning.
[2:44] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A grander purpose than that of the art themselves may not even comprehend that exist.
[2:50] \[SPEAKER_02\]: For the difference between art and propaganda is the values and beliefs of the man or woman holding the pen.
[2:58] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The stage in which the artist lets his creativity and imagination dance perform and play.
[3:05] \[SPEAKER_02\]: While propaganda puts them moral or ideological compass at the forefront, which should be foundational takes the spotlight.
[3:14] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And as a result, the stage the performance is built on is hollow in collapses under the weight of the pretend artist's own hubris.
[3:23] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Scott Coffin and Finance of Fretis.
[3:26] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He's no different in this regard.
[3:28] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Similar to the work of C.S.
[3:30] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Lewis, the man was a talented writer and creator of fantastical worlds get lost in his well, but this world was built on foundation of his Christian belief.
[3:40] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The familiar saying, every story has been told, is often a mockery made by nihilist to drag others down to the abyss of which they find themselves being consumed by, like frogs who feel the temperature of the pot rising, so they pull down the others, so that they all may suffer a slow death equally.
[4:03] \[SPEAKER_02\]: but it is also an anxious belief of creatives and writers who yearn for adventure, but don't know where to set their sails.
[4:14] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Born to late to explore the seas, born to early to explore the stars.
[4:20] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The natural state of humanity is to yearn for adventure.
[4:25] \[SPEAKER_02\]: We are naturally explorers of all things, and constantly looking for answers to our questions.
[4:32] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But those answers almost indirectly result in two new questions being found, and thus two new adventures that must be taken upon.
[4:42] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Yes, every story has been told, but that's to say that every spec of the earth has been walked, every man, woman, and child has a walk the same path.
[4:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Foundational stories, those often found in a whole year work.
[5:01] \[SPEAKER_02\]: are the foundational works that much of the great works of Western society can be traced back to.
[5:10] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And as such, it is important, even if you aren't religious, to look in these holy texts, not just for C.S.
[5:18] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Lewis or Token, but Alexander Sojanitsin, Docievsky Yoskowild.
[5:25] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And yes, I do believe, Scott Coffin,
[5:30] \[SPEAKER_02\]: laugh as you will that I can compare Scott to those other highly acclaimed authors, but the truth in the matter is that he does share some similarities to them, and in the previous room discussion of how no new stories have been told, there is something to be said of Scott Kothin being the first to develop the mascot or genre, a decision born from his imagination through trial, ridicule, in the lowest point in his life.
[5:58] \[SPEAKER_02\]: the death of his artistic dreams, rewarded for taking one last voyage on those risky waters, and he was rewarded, bound to flee.
[6:12] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But those riches then casted a scent that others immediately picked up, others who didn't understand why it is that Scott's work, even as simple and made from scratches it was,
[6:25] \[SPEAKER_02\]: resonated with so many people.
[6:30] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Bindi and the Ink Machine poppies play time into Go Park.
[6:34] \[SPEAKER_02\]: All of them follow the same formulaic story that Scott had developed.
[6:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: corrupt children entertainment establishment, coliformaz got characters that seek to destroy rather than inspire, and some form of alkaline of Satan who acts as the catalyst for pursuing action solely for their own gain, whether it be for their pride, ego, lust for power, or for some reason always trying to cheat dead.
[7:00] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But none have ever yet truly resonate as much as Scott Coffins' work.
[7:05] \[SPEAKER_02\]: even divided as the franchise audience is now.
[7:08] \[SPEAKER_02\]: From narrative, gameplay, direction, and world-building and franchise management, which I've spoken at infinite love.
[7:16] \[SPEAKER_02\]: People still talk about William Afton, golden Freddy, begrudgingly, and Michael Afton.
[7:22] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It still remains the de facto king of this new territory.
[7:26] \[SPEAKER_02\]: it has explored.
[7:28] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A righteous king in that.
[7:30] \[SPEAKER_02\]: For even in its failings, it has yet to truly ever lose sight of what made the story so successful.
[7:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Inless exploration, stories of sacrifice and second chances, and the battles of good and evil, chaos and order, even if it is on a much smaller scale in comparison to say Star Wars lore the Rings or even the Dark Knight,
[7:55] \[SPEAKER_02\]: so if you will indulge me, I would like to take a moment to explore Final Fantasy Ferties in some man-trippertate, a more biblical alusinary framework, and see what we are able to yield from it.
[8:20] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Alexander Solgenitsin, author of the Gulag Arcapelico, once wrote that, quote, the line separating good and evil passes not through states, nor between classes nor between political parties either, but right through every human heart.
[8:39] \[SPEAKER_02\]: and through all human hearts.
[8:43] \[SPEAKER_02\]: This line shifts inside us it oscillates with the ears and even with an hearts overwhelmed by evil.
[8:52] \[SPEAKER_02\]: One small bridge of good is retained.
[8:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: One of the more iconic stories of the Bible comes from Cain and Abel, the story of two brothers born from Adam and Eve.
[9:06] \[SPEAKER_02\]: When it came to offer sacrifices to God, Abel offered the best at his flock, while Cain offered some of his crops.
[9:16] \[SPEAKER_02\]: God favored Abel's offering, but rejected Keynes, this rejection angered Keynes, and despite God's warning to control His emotions, Keynes' jealousy consumed Him, when he came learning Abel into the field, and murdering Him.
[9:35] \[SPEAKER_02\]: When God asked for Keynes an explanation, Keynes shook his fist at God, for not showing Him do respect, but in response,
[9:45] \[SPEAKER_02\]: God shook his head.
[9:47] \[SPEAKER_02\]: King had blamed God for his problems before, but God had warned him that he had let sin lie to his door and let it have its way with him.
[9:59] \[SPEAKER_02\]: a warning cane had not heated.
[10:02] \[SPEAKER_02\]: God explained that cane had never fully sacrificed, whereas Abel gave his all.
[10:09] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Abel always offered the fattest livestock, the ripest offering, whereas Cain offered the weakest hole in the most worthless of his yield.
[10:20] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Cain only tried to get by with what little he need to give, but
[10:25] \[SPEAKER_02\]: in response to his little effort.
[10:27] \[SPEAKER_02\]: God, the entity of the highest good, in the embodiment of the spirit of adventure, the goal of self-sacrifice, and the bringer of order to chaos, rebuked cane, confled to nod, a Hebrew word for wonder or exile.
[10:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: because to deny God's existence, to blame him for the failings of the cell, and to reject the teachings of morality and hierarchical value meant order, is to live a life of wander and silk exile, a life of unfulfillment, with no purpose, no place, in essence, no life, for no effort.
[11:11] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Adam and Eve then bore a third child in set.
[11:14] \[SPEAKER_02\]: set, whom God gave to them as a replacement for Abel, and is considered the beginning of the holy bloodline that starts from him, the son of the first humans of the fallen race of man, to eventually generations later, to Noah, who would be the designated survivor of the great blood that God brought upon the world when the Spirit of Cain infected every heart, mind, and soul of man on earth.
[11:42] \[SPEAKER_02\]: flooding their thoughts with a murder, treachery, sedation, and the botry.
[11:50] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But even in that preserved bloodline, the spirit of cane crept, as Noah's son, Ham, would bring shame by finding mockery and flights to his father when he was at his most vulnerable.
[12:06] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Ham's descendants, particularly through his grandson Nimrod, are traditionally so city with the founding of Babylon, the city that sought to reach the heavens through human effort and pride.
[12:20] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But the people of Babel did not place a god at their hearts in this endeavor.
[12:24] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Rather, it was their pride, ego, and desire to ascend to the divide that drove their actions, repeating man's original sin from the Garden of Eden.
[12:36] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Though God intervened by confusing their language and scattering them across the earth, their downfall was already inevitable.
[12:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: For any place where the spiritual lineage of Cane takes roots and holds, what resentment, moral defiance, and self-adulatory reign without mercy.
[12:59] \[SPEAKER_02\]: collapse follows as a natural consequence.
[13:03] \[SPEAKER_02\]: In the pursuit of freedom from moral scrutiny, the promise to indulge every women's sensation as though entitled by divine right, societies may rise, but the world, the city, the tower they build will eventually erode decay or fall to ruin
[13:30] \[SPEAKER_02\]: This is a brief summary and translation of the spiritual range of cane, a pattern of humourbellion and self-destruction echo throughout biblical history, and it flows directly into the narrative I wish to explore.
[13:45] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Again, as I said in my disclaimer, this isn't a religious lecture, but the conversation of these stories flows directly into the narrative I wish to explore.
[13:55] \[SPEAKER_02\]: I've said before, in my remnant and agony episode, that William and Michael embody agony and remnant, their symbolic significance both metaphorically and in some ways almost literally.
[14:10] \[SPEAKER_02\]: by extension.
[14:11] \[SPEAKER_02\]: William can be seen not only as the embodiment of agony, but also an avatar of this spirit of cane, a soul of resentment, envy, and pride, violence, amlessness, and the forging of one's own moral compass, while rejecting the divine values of the moral good.
[14:35] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A journey for which is nothing more.
[14:39] \[SPEAKER_02\]: then eternal downward spiral into the abyss.
[14:54] \[SPEAKER_02\]: One of the earliest explored facets of a William Afton's character in the silverized novel trilogy is his deep seated resentment toward his business partner Henry Emily, further expanded upon in the fourth closet.
[15:09] \[SPEAKER_02\]: This bitterness stems from William's fury upon discovering that Henry had uncovered something truly miraculous.
[15:18] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Remnant, a means of, in a sense, cheating death.
[15:24] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The murder of Charlotte was born from his envy against Henry's creative brilliance and the subsequent disappearance of the children at Freddy's, a calculated attempt to dismantle Henry's legacy, even as William himself spiraled into grief and madness.
[15:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But this narrative arc echoes the biblical story of Cain and Abel, a cautionary tale rooted in resentment, even toward one's own blood.
[15:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Yet the dry force behind Cain's act of fratricide, extends beyond mere jealousy.
[16:03] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It reflects a deeper disillusionment with society's structure, the belief that one's labor should yield greater favor, and the refusal to accept that the fault may lie not in divine injustice or the way of the universe, but in one's own choices.
[16:22] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Now, let us consider the concept of society within the King and Abel story.
[16:28] \[SPEAKER_02\]: At first glance, invoking society may seem... well, absurd.
[16:33] \[SPEAKER_02\]: After all, the world of the time, because instead of just four people.
[16:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But when you've viewed from a symbolic lens, the rules begin to embody broader societal functions.
[16:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Abel is a shepherd, a figure that the Bible repeatedly elevates as emblematic of virtue and heroism.
[16:54] \[SPEAKER_02\]: David, the humble shepherd boy who defeats Goliath, in Jesus, who refers to himself as the good shepherd, one who lays down his life over his flock, are too such archetypes.
[17:07] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The Shepherd's role is often misconstrued as merely guiding livestock to pasture, but more profoundly.
[17:15] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is that of vigilant guardianship.
[17:18] \[SPEAKER_02\]: One who defends the vulnerable from threats far greater than themselves, even at the cost of their own safety, and sometimes lie.
[17:28] \[SPEAKER_02\]: In society, certain roles naturally garner a higher degree of respect, almost by instinct.
[17:35] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Take, for example, the soldier who lays down their life in defense of their homeland.
[17:41] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Such sacrifice evokes deep reverence, not merely because of the duty fulfilled, but because of the immense personal cost accrued.
[17:51] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The same holds true for police officers, firefighters, verse responders and doctors.
[17:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Individuals who commit themselves to arduous, often perilous callings that serve the greater good.
[18:04] \[SPEAKER_02\]: These are professions rooted in the ability and service.
[18:09] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And thus we, as a collective, are inclined to show them honor, do respect, and are washed them with accolades.
[18:19] \[SPEAKER_02\]: slight tangent, creatives occupy a more ambiguous space.
[18:24] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Throughout history, artists have also inspired change, uplifted the human spirit, and shaped the course of civilizations.
[18:33] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Yet, just as many have wielded the mantle of artist, to provoke, to destroy, or to justify malicious intent under the guise of expression or change, it is a field that welcomes visionaries, but also, unfortunately, is a breeding ground of pretenders and propagandists.
[18:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Abel, as a shepherd, embodies the archetype of the Guardian.
[19:02] \[SPEAKER_02\]: His is a thankless dangerous vocation, warding off threats, braving nature's cruelty, and bearing the burden of protecting those who cannot protect themselves.
[19:15] \[SPEAKER_02\]: In yet, despite these hardships,
[19:18] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Abel offers to God the embodiment of the highest good, the fattest and most unblemished of his flock.
[19:27] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He doesn't cut corners, he doesn't seek the easy way out.
[19:31] \[SPEAKER_02\]: His sacrifice is the product of both discipline and devotion.
[19:37] \[SPEAKER_02\]: contrast this with Kane, who laborers in the fields.
[19:41] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A simpler job, but by no means a meaningless endeavor.
[19:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: On the contrary, it is vital, but Kane presents God with the most withered and meager of his harvest.
[19:53] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He meets the bare minimum of what is required, but with no genuine effort, no striving for excellence in putting in more.
[20:02] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The offering is symbolic of a hollow gesture, a task done not out of a reverence, but obligation and only ever striving to achieve what is required and not to go above and beyond the call of duty.
[20:21] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And notice how I did not claim Kain's work was unimportant.
[20:25] \[SPEAKER_02\]: only that it was simpler.
[20:28] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The role of the farmer is essential and important, just as Abels is, both contribute to the sustenance and betterment of their world.
[20:40] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But the distinction lies in the level of risk and sacrifice.
[20:45] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Abel places himself in danger daily at the mercy of nature in the threat of predators, cain by contrast, operates in a more orderly controlled environment.
[21:01] \[SPEAKER_02\]: both roles matter.
[21:03] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Both sustain life and make the world better.
[21:08] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But the risk they assume, and by extension in this example, the individual heart behind their actions, are what ultimately differentiates the recognition they receive.
[21:19] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Is the same way we may reveal a soldier coming home from war with tears of joy.
[21:27] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But when the farmer reports his harvest,
[21:30] \[SPEAKER_02\]: we shake his hand and congratulate him.
[21:34] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But, if the soldier were to lord over his superiority as a warrior, who almost lost his life over a humble farmer, well, the soldier would no longer be in our good graces from his selfish ecotism now would he.
[21:53] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Henry Emily was the creative force, the visionary.
[22:00] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He wasn't merely the engineer behind the machines.
[22:03] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He was the mind that concede for a bare singing show, the diner, the atmosphere, the brand itself.
[22:11] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It was Henry who poured his creative spirit into the foundation of a place built on joy, wonder, and a simple magic of family spending quality time with one another and building cherished memories.
[22:27] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He took the risks, both financially and personally, to bring that dream to life.
[22:34] \[SPEAKER_02\]: William Afton, by contrast, represented the business side.
[22:39] \[SPEAKER_02\]: His contributions were logistical, managerial, vital yes, but ultimately detached from the imaginative soul and risk of the enterprise.
[22:50] \[SPEAKER_02\]: William did not conceive the heart of Fred Bears.
[22:53] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Rather, he ensured its operational functionality.
[22:58] \[SPEAKER_02\]: His talents could be applied to any number of ventures, interchangeable with other business pursuits if proper abilities so demanded.
[23:07] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And so, when it comes to public respect and name recognition, who do you think the world remembers for the idea of Fred Bears?
[23:19] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Henry.
[23:20] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He was the risk taker, the dreamer, and while William's role was essential, he would never receive the same admiration for his business acumen, as Henry would for his creative legacy.
[23:35] \[SPEAKER_02\]: William Afton at his core is a sociopathic ego maniac, driven by a desperate thirst for power, control, and reverence.
[23:48] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Though the yearning to be revered and respected, Boris a fine line with the desire to be feared, and notorious.
[23:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: We catch glimpses of this pathology in midnight motorist, where his household is ruled with a tyrant's grip.
[24:05] \[SPEAKER_02\]: His own son, a boy who should have looked to him as a guardian against a harshness of the world, and does a man who brings those harsh realities to home.
[24:16] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Oh, how strong of a man you are, William.
[24:19] \[SPEAKER_02\]: To raise your hand against your own blood, to a child, who instinctively sees you as a protector, but instead finds in you the very thing he should be protected from.
[24:31] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It's a fitting pattern for a man as cowardly as William Afton.
[24:36] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A man who prays on children, the most vulnerable, the most impressionable, the most defenseless, those who are easy to frighten, to manipulate, to isolate, and to tear apart.
[24:55] \[SPEAKER_02\]: That is the true measure of his power.
[24:59] \[SPEAKER_02\]: One built not on strength or greatness, but on his charismatic prowess, and exploring those least able to fight back.
[25:09] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The death of Charlotte is the symbolic equivalent of Kane's soldering able's ripe sacrifice.
[25:16] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The offering meant to represent his dedication to the highest good.
[25:21] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It's as if Kane and his bitterness had killed the finest sheep of the flock, not to take from God, but to prove a point that the shepherd is valuable, incapable of protecting what is most sacred to his duty.
[25:42] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Williams' murder of Charlotte is just that.
[25:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A cruel gesture meant to mock Henry's role not only as a creator, but as a protector.
[25:55] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is a direct assault on the very image of the shepherd.
[25:59] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A father raising his daughter to become a kind, capable, and beautiful human being.
[26:07] \[SPEAKER_02\]: With his daughter taken away from him,
[26:10] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Henry is distracted, wounded, and in his pain, fails to see the wolf hiding among the flock.
[26:19] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The killer moves freely, claiming more victims, while the shepherd grieves.
[26:27] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Henry earned his respect, not just as a businessman or even as a father, but as a man.
[26:37] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He labored, honestly admitted his flaws later in life, and bore the weight of his choices without redirecting blame.
[26:48] \[SPEAKER_02\]: will he amassed in on the other hand, as depicted throughout the novels, wallowed in envy.
[26:55] \[SPEAKER_02\]: His personal writings about Henry veer wildly between tharning admiration and violent resentment.
[27:03] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Why?
[27:05] \[SPEAKER_02\]: because willing believed he deserved more.
[27:10] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And like a petulant child consumed by jealousy, he reasoned if I cannot have the praise or recognition I deserve, then no one will.
[27:25] \[SPEAKER_02\]: venturing briefly into theory territory.
[27:29] \[SPEAKER_02\]: I believe it's important to consider how Michael Afton and William's wife factor into this narrative of desperate validation.
[27:36] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Based on the implications of the immortal and the restless and the new game release of Secret of the mimic, Michael was likely born in the nineteen seventies, potentially out of wedlock.
[27:50] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The timeline hints that William and his wife may have separated for a time, with Michael being born during this estranged period.
[27:59] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Contrast that with Henry, whose family life appears stable and affectionate in the novelization, in whose love for Charlotte is undeniable, both in the fourth closet, a bit maniacally so, and for the Fazbear's Pizzeria simulator.
[28:17] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Henry exemplifies the image of a proud father, a man who succeeds not only in business, but had the aptitude to achieve similar results, and love in parenthood.
[28:32] \[SPEAKER_02\]: William Afton, meanwhile, is marked by emotional astrangement, volatility, and a seemingly dysfunctional marriage.
[28:42] \[SPEAKER_02\]: If Michael was indeed born during a time of mutual instability, William may have seen the child not as a symbol of hope, but as a reminder of failure, a union force not by love, but obligation, a mistake, a stigma.
[29:02] \[SPEAKER_02\]: In the nineteen seventies, such circumstances were often met with societal judgment, casting shadows that are one's character and status.
[29:11] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And perhaps is no surprise then, that William, likely driven to drink, confirmed to be driven to violence, and to spiraling rage.
[29:22] \[SPEAKER_02\]: and a perversence of justification in targeting Henry.
[29:26] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He attacked the one thing that defines a father, more than any public accolade.
[29:34] \[SPEAKER_02\]: His, child.
[29:36] \[SPEAKER_02\]: To desecrate that bond, to destroy what makes you a father, is to strike at the heart of a man's identity, and for someone like William.
[29:48] \[SPEAKER_02\]: That was a delicious irony.
[29:52] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He could not help, but gore himself on.
[29:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And eventually, become addicted to repeat.
[30:03] \[SPEAKER_01\]: William and Afton end the fun times.
[30:07] \[SPEAKER_01\]: Pride and intelligence.
[30:12] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is often said that a tool is neither inherently good nor evil, but instead acts as an extension, an amplifier, of the moral character of its wielder.
[30:25] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A gun, for instance, is a terrifying weapon.
[30:29] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Yet there is a stark difference between a six-shooter in the hands of a wild west outlaw.
[30:34] \[SPEAKER_02\]: and the same weapon wielded by a sheriff or marshal, striving to preserve order in the chaos of the frontier.
[30:42] \[SPEAKER_02\]: For a more literary example, consider the eponymous portrait in the picture of Dorian Gray, a painting that bore the burden of sin on behalf of its subject.
[30:56] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Each stroke of depravity etched itself not upon Dorian's face, but onto the canvas.
[31:03] \[SPEAKER_02\]: had this Canada's been wheelsets by a wise man.
[31:06] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The painting could have served as a moral compass, a visual reminder of a one's descent in device.
[31:14] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But instead, Dorian concealed it, hid the evidence of his shame, and squandered the gift of eternal youth to indulge in aestheticism, vise, and momentary delights that at best are hollow, and at worst, bleed darkness into both self and others.
[31:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The Spirit of Cain is the infernal whisper that murmurs, life has denied you what you deserve.
[31:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Take revenge then, upon existence itself.
[31:50] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is a spirit of illumination, and its target is always the innocent.
[31:56] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It feeds on resentment, and finds its aperture in the very toolment to better our world, our own technology.
[32:06] \[SPEAKER_02\]: There is a peculiar obsession with technology among those unhappy with their own choices.
[32:12] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A false belief that rather than transforming themselves or finding their worldview, they can instate build something powerful enough to reshape reality itself, not to serve the good, but to dominate it, and to control it.
[32:30] \[SPEAKER_02\]: In Dante's Inferno, the deepest circle of hell is not a lake of fire, but a frozen abyss, Gokitas, more Satan knows internally upon his three greatest traders, Cassius, Brutus, and Judas.
[32:49] \[SPEAKER_02\]: fire, the traditional symbol of punishment is replaced with the ice to convey a far greater sin, but frail, not merely betrayal of people, but of trust, of love, of the secret potential found within humanity.
[33:08] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is cold because betrayal is the antithesis of war.
[33:13] \[SPEAKER_02\]: the death of communal faith in favor of isolated self-serving treachery.
[33:20] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But trail, pride, and intellect share a common route in resentment.
[33:27] \[SPEAKER_02\]: King was not just angry with Abel, he was angry with God for not recognizing his offering, for not crowning his efforts with glory.
[33:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: in this light, pride is not merely a vice, but the gateway drug to corruption.
[33:45] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The proud man is wounded by any evidence that he is not the best, not the smartest, not the strongest, and not the most respected.
[33:55] \[SPEAKER_02\]: So it is with William Afton, his pride is fragile, and his resentment busters when he is outshown.
[34:02] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Socially, by Henry Emily, intellectually, by Edward Murray, and even morally, by his own son Michael.
[34:13] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Like Kane, William cast himself as the victim of an unjust world, and this twisted victimhood, she seeks retribution, not against a person, but against the very concept of goodness, these three men represented.
[34:29] \[SPEAKER_02\]: If he cannot possess the joy he envies, then he will destroy it.
[34:36] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Again, this is why the lowest pit of hell is cold.
[34:40] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The trail is the absence of warmth, of love, and all that binds people together.
[34:49] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is self-imposed exile through radical individuation where the good of many is discarded for the bitter pleasure of one.
[35:00] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The fun time animatronics are the culmination of everything William Afton represents.
[35:07] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Cold, calculating, and fresh risks.
[35:11] \[SPEAKER_02\]: They are more than machines.
[35:14] \[SPEAKER_02\]: They are avatars of his Luciferian ego and statistic imagination.
[35:19] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It wasn't enough for him to exploit the mascots of childhood wonder as costumes for his own atrocities.
[35:27] \[SPEAKER_02\]: No, he engineered a tomatons to carry out his will to wear the smile of innocence while holding blades behind their metal bones.
[35:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Circus Baby and Fontaine Freddy represent both sides of Athens' depravity.
[35:45] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Circus Baby is the face of manipulation, the embodiment of shattered trust, the underminer of relationships once believed to be unbreakable,
[35:56] \[SPEAKER_02\]: She seduces, lies, and portrays, discarding others the moment they outlive their usefulness.
[36:04] \[SPEAKER_02\]: When the non-control, she turns vindictive and petty and pectulent.
[36:10] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Fun time, Freddy, on the other hand, is Afton's perverse intellectualism, curious, theatrical, and homosodally fascinated with death.
[36:22] \[SPEAKER_02\]: In count the ways, he doesn't merely kill.
[36:25] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He experiments.
[36:28] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He philosophizes.
[36:30] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He admires the artistry of a human can physically suffer as the bone meal runs out, as one might admire the ceiling of the sustained chapel.
[36:41] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is evil under the guise of intellectual curiosity, experimentation, and yet paradoxically, the perceived appropriate punishment for the crimes of other, he deem on worthy of life.
[36:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: the pride of the creator, the trail of the kin, and the dark intelligence over the creation.
[37:06] \[SPEAKER_02\]: This is the trinity of William Afton.
[37:10] \[SPEAKER_02\]: This is the legacy of the monster, who wears the white smile of man.
[37:15] \[SPEAKER_01\]: The missing children incited violence and debatory.
[37:27] \[SPEAKER_02\]: in the picture of Dorian Gray.
[37:30] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Dorian's descent in the hedonism finds its moral justification after the tragic death of Sybil Vain, his young actress Vian say.
[37:39] \[SPEAKER_02\]: After cruelty discarding her when she fails to meet his aesthetic expectations on stage, Sybil takes her own life.
[37:48] \[SPEAKER_02\]: rather than being overcome with guilt, Doreen is quickly comforted by Lord Henry, his friend, who refrains the tragedy as a beautiful experience, an artistic moment rather than a moral failing on his cell.
[38:03] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Lord Henry encourages Dorian to view it not as a loss, but a rare and poetic indulgence in youthful passion.
[38:14] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is here that Dorian begins to fully embrace a worldview that rationalizes self-indulgence, cruelty, and sin as justified.
[38:25] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Through that world lens, life and soul becomes a playground of hedonism or destruction.
[38:31] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Because of nothing matters, then all that does is what is to be experienced and leisureed.
[38:40] \[SPEAKER_02\]: You see, when cane murders this brother and rejects all that is good, all that is true, and all that is harmful to himself to a toneful.
[38:49] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The natural next step from violence.
[38:54] \[SPEAKER_02\]: is more violence.
[38:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But it isn't just about murder.
[39:00] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It's about nihilism and decadence and pursuit of power.
[39:04] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And in that pursuit, any justification for violence isn't a righteous one.
[39:10] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It's an impulsive need.
[39:14] \[SPEAKER_02\]: William after knows what he is doing is wrong.
[39:17] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He is well aware that killing children is perhaps one of the greatest evils a man can carry out.
[39:26] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But William also knows that all those more reasons don't apply to him.
[39:34] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The reason why he chooses to kill children is because of the sanctity the world puts on their innocence and their defenselessness to trick to hurt and to ultimately kill a child is relatively easy.
[39:51] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But in their desperate cries, they perform a serenade that a psychopathic homocidal man like William, a doors.
[40:01] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Nothing is more ripe and succulent than that of the desecration of purity to that man, marring the world in darkness, even where it should shine its most brunt.
[40:22] \[SPEAKER_01\]: The dead children incident in spring trap, angelessness and spiked.
[40:32] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Henry the Father.
[40:34] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Edwin the Creative Spirit, and Michael the Reason Man, and the Innocence and Purity of Childhood, are the idols of Williams' story.
[40:46] \[SPEAKER_02\]: These are the characters and avatars who represent the ideals upon which the moral world rest.
[40:53] \[SPEAKER_02\]: They represent guardianship, inspiration, redemption, and hope.
[40:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: but the spirit of Cain is not merely resistant to these virtues.
[41:02] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is their antithesis.
[41:04] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is the embodiment of betrayal, of corrupted pride, of resentment so deep, it seeks to unmake what is good simply because it cannot possess it.
[41:14] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And for such a sin, God speaks to Cain, quote, so now you are cursed from this earth, which had opened in its mouth to receive your brother's blood from your hand.
[41:26] \[SPEAKER_02\]: When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield under thee her strength.
[41:31] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A fugitive and a vagabond, shout that be in the earth, in quote.
[41:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Genesis four eleven twelve.
[41:41] \[SPEAKER_02\]: In the same manner that Dorian Gray could never sever his soul from the weight of his immoral deeds, came to cannot allude the consequences of his transgression.
[41:53] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Nothing born of his labor shall prosper.
[41:56] \[SPEAKER_02\]: All he creates will, wither, and he will be condemned to wander, a fugitive cloaked in shame, a thief in the night, such as the fate of the man who slays and defyles the highest ideal, who betrays purity, desecrates innocence, and marks the sacred.
[42:18] \[SPEAKER_02\]: So, too, is the path of William Afton, upon the death of his daughter, and their revelation to the board that his creation is not faulty, but instruments of death.
[42:31] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Not like the mimic of absorbing Edwin's rage, but working as intended to murder without leaving a trace.
[42:41] \[SPEAKER_02\]: William was cast out, stripped of his company, no family he loves was loved by, bereft of friendship, and bar from the very works that bore his name.
[42:55] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He became a man without a legacy.
[42:59] \[SPEAKER_02\]: By this point, William acting is irretrably lost, and the thought lies with no one, but himself.
[43:09] \[SPEAKER_02\]: as came the men's when cast in the land of nod, so too might William cry quote.
[43:15] \[SPEAKER_02\]: My punishment is greater than I can bear.
[43:19] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Behold thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth, in quote.
[43:25] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Genesis XIV.
[43:28] \[SPEAKER_02\]: all those possessed by the Spirit of Cain become alienated from others, is a rare self-fulfilling prophecy, they deceive, they cheat, they steal, they cooperate only when personal gain is assured and offer others only what is second rate when asked for aid, yet no matter how long it takes, the people around them inevitably come to see the true.
[43:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: like the society that once a door dooring gray, but grew wary as rumors of his indulges in corruption spread, that those in his proximity began to feel poisoned, defiled, drained of all that made them good.
[44:13] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And so the wise and wary sever their ties, leaving the deceiver in their isolation.
[44:20] \[SPEAKER_02\]: In response, the prideful and arrogant grow bitter and vengeful.
[44:26] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Like a second-reconable force to move from town to town, as each village uncovers its fraudulence, they must seek out new territories to exploit, new souls attract down with them.
[44:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Whereas the saying goes, misery loves company.
[44:45] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The second missing children's incident, also known as the dead children incident, has always stood as an anomaly in William Appden's otherwise calculated methodology.
[44:56] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Gone is the meticulous stalking from afar, the patient identification of the vulnerable prey, the subtle luring of the sheep away from the flock.
[45:07] \[SPEAKER_02\]: In its place, he embeds himself within the system as a security guard, tempers with a toy and a electronics fish recognition to open a window of opportunity.
[45:19] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And when he finally acts, he does so, racially, in full view and broad daylight.
[45:28] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It should go without saying that the manipulation and murder of a child is one of the most horrific of crimes.
[45:35] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But there is something even more terrifying about the savage rampage of a man who, unbound from any purpose or pretense, acts with pure bloodlust, indiscriminately unapologetically, in full view of those who scream and run in vain.
[45:58] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Like fun time Freddy and Freddy Fazbear's pizza rea simulator, who shift from intelligent animatronic to beast fueled by barrel instinct, reveals a horrifying duality.
[46:09] \[SPEAKER_02\]: William Afton two has devolved.
[46:12] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The death of Charlotte marked his point of no return.
[46:16] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Yet it was the collapse of everything he had built, that severed the last tether to his calculated persona.
[46:24] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Left with no grander scheme, no more masks to wear.
[46:28] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The man disintegrates into something far worse.
[46:33] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A monster without purpose.
[46:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Now, his only drive is slaughter, for power, for dominion, for the God-like thrill of deciding who lives and dies.
[46:50] \[SPEAKER_02\]: He seeks not redemption nor resolution, only the certainty that he will be remembered.
[46:59] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And if the psychopath who can no longer create, who can no longer control,
[47:04] \[SPEAKER_02\]: what remains is destruction.
[47:07] \[SPEAKER_02\]: If he cannot leave his mark upon the world, then he will stain its canvas with blood.
[47:16] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And that is the spirit of Kane embodied through William Afton.
[47:24] \[SPEAKER_02\]: William lies habitually.
[47:26] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Stratory became his path, and that path led him to infanticide and theft.
[47:33] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The destruction of ideals he once only have heartily pursued, yet felt entitled to the rewards too.
[47:40] \[SPEAKER_02\]: in time he found himself isolated, shunned by all who had come to know his deceitful nature.
[47:48] \[SPEAKER_02\]: His life's work, no matter how ambitious or grand, was doomed to ruin, faded to never bear fruit.
[47:57] \[SPEAKER_02\]: This misalignment of values, something that, with enough practice and rationalization, can become a second nature to all of us, gives a rise to a heart-steep in darkness.
[48:09] \[SPEAKER_02\]: It is a lie of despair, a self-deception, so complete, that it corrupts the soul, and william, in some twisted part of himself, knows it is false.
[48:23] \[SPEAKER_02\]: I mean, what does William act in true desire to be?
[48:27] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A successful businessman, a brilliant inventor, a scientist, an alchemist of life bent on transcending death itself.
[48:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: A monster, something primal and beard lurking just beyond the light.
[48:44] \[SPEAKER_02\]: To be loved, feared, in need, all of the above
[48:50] \[SPEAKER_02\]: When one's a world of view is so fundamentally misaligned, when the moral order is inverted, and the self is enthroned as God.
[48:59] \[SPEAKER_02\]: No plan can succeed.
[49:02] \[SPEAKER_02\]: No creation can thrive.
[49:05] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And no joy can last.
[49:10] \[SPEAKER_02\]: All pass lead only to fleeting debutters pleasures, and their inevitable ruin.
[49:17] \[SPEAKER_02\]: That is the path that is sent into Dante's abyss, and ever deepening ever widening hell when a man lives falsely, valuing, celebrating, and yearning for what is improper.
[49:33] \[SPEAKER_02\]: Nothing can be yielded, but misery.
[49:38] \[SPEAKER_02\]: All his stories, his adventures,
[49:41] \[SPEAKER_02\]: are hollow echoes, false experiences in pursuit of allusory purposes, but we think nothing but bleeding impression of meaning.
[49:52] \[SPEAKER_02\]: No great work of art to endure, no sacrifices to be remembered, no noble contribution to be honored.
[50:02] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The tools he wields are not themselves good or evil, but in the hands of a man, with darkness stirring within, they become instruments of misery, cast across the world like a spreading stain.
[50:19] \[SPEAKER_02\]: as so forward and crucible a pride resentment, and the worship of intellect over wisdom becomes a dangerous equation.
[50:29] \[SPEAKER_02\]: One whose answer is always a threat to humanity, and though we know William Afton as the monster of this story, such a threat is, thankfully, rarely remembered in detail in the real world,
[50:44] \[SPEAKER_02\]: like the bear that mows a hiker or the shark that strikes a surfer.
[50:49] \[SPEAKER_02\]: The act is remembered, the violence, the loss, and the victim.
[50:55] \[SPEAKER_02\]: But the creature itself fades into myth.
[50:58] \[SPEAKER_02\]: No one recalls which bear which shark, only that a predator struck the innocent.
[51:05] \[SPEAKER_02\]: And that is all the agony of such a storage truly leaves behind.
[51:14] \[SPEAKER_02\]: with the monster itself forgotten into myth.
[51:26] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And with all that said,
[51:28] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This concludes tonight's program of In To The Night.
