[0:00] Speaker 1: Hey everyone, it's Sophia. Welcome to Work in Progress. Hey friends,
[0:15] Speaker 1: we are back on Work in Progress with perhaps the
[0:19] Speaker 1: best guest ever.
[0:21] Speaker 2: The iconic Leslie Jones.
[0:23] Speaker 1: It's so interesting to me because you know college contest
[0:28] Speaker 1: and you won, and of course that tells you something,
[0:31] Speaker 1: and like, we all know how hard this industry is.
[0:35] Speaker 1: Comedy careers are tough to travel, trying to get time,
[0:39] Speaker 1: trying to get up on stage. You hear about the
[0:42] Speaker 1: setbacks and then like Chris.
[0:45] Speaker 2: Rock helped you get into the SNL.
[0:48] Speaker 3: Or a bit like how well, how did you go
[0:50] Speaker 3: from college to the hei?
[0:54] Speaker 4: Fernanda, Fernanda, bring me that article I had the article.
[0:58] Speaker 4: They wrote an article on me when I did the contest.
[1:03] Speaker 4: Kelly Clarkston found it. The thing with Chris Rock was
[1:08] Speaker 4: it was so weird because every time I would see him,
[1:11] Speaker 4: I was like, you know how funny I am. The
[1:13] Speaker 4: only way I'm gonna make it is if you help
[1:16] Speaker 4: me make it like you helped me make it. Like
[1:19] Speaker 4: it's gonna have to be a guy. I hate, Hey,
[1:21] Speaker 4: that article that's right there in my office, the article
[1:25] Speaker 4: that Kelly Clarkson got me.
[1:27] Speaker 5: It's right there in the office. I think it's in
[1:29] Speaker 5: a frame anyway, And I'm like Chris. Every time I
[1:32] Speaker 5: woul see him, I'd be like Chris.
[1:34] Speaker 4: I mean I would literally run out to his car
[1:36] Speaker 4: with him and be like Chris, Chris, what the fuck?
[1:40] Speaker 4: And I remember him saying you're not ready. Now he
[1:44] Speaker 4: tells the story saying they not ready, And I was like, nah, motherfucker,
[1:48] Speaker 4: you used to say it to me. I was like,
[1:51] Speaker 4: how are you talking about I'm not ready? How are
[1:53] Speaker 4: you talking about I'm not ready? I am ready? Yes,
[1:57] Speaker 4: this is so crazy. So this is the article.
[2:01] Speaker 5: Oh my god, that they wrote.
[2:03] Speaker 4: Now. Wow. You know what kills me is that when
[2:07] Speaker 4: they when they interviewed me, I said, I think a
[2:11] Speaker 4: good comedian this is this is me at nineteen. I
[2:14] Speaker 4: think a good comedian should be able to relate to
[2:17] Speaker 4: the audience and talk about things in a natural way.
[2:22] Speaker 2: Is that person?
[2:23] Speaker 5: Who the fuck is that person? And where did I.
[2:30] Speaker 4: You know, come? And and the jokes I had literally
[2:33] Speaker 4: would work.
[2:34] Speaker 5: Now. I told a joke about my mom wanted me
[2:36] Speaker 5: to be famous. She wanted me.
[2:38] Speaker 4: She wanted me to be famous so bad that she
[2:40] Speaker 4: would leave me in the grocery store so then they
[2:43] Speaker 4: would put me on the back of a milk carton
[2:46] Speaker 4: you remember when they.
[2:46] Speaker 6: Used to put the mistic kids on the milk I
[2:48] Speaker 6: did somebody say, have you seen me?
[2:51] Speaker 5: Yeah, have you seen me? Have you seen this little girl?
[2:54] Speaker 5: And she said that.
[2:57] Speaker 4: I said that when somebody go, girl, I saw your
[3:00] Speaker 4: daughter on a milk cart and she'd.
[3:01] Speaker 5: Be like, she's moving up.
[3:05] Speaker 4: That was literally my first joke, and I I'm like, okay,
[3:10] Speaker 4: so I know what it's supposed to be about, right,
[3:13] Speaker 4: I know what comedy and I'm thinking jokes. Then I
[3:16] Speaker 4: go back, I leave college, I go back to LA
[3:20] Speaker 4: to start trying to do comedy, and I'm not doing
[3:23] Speaker 4: good because I'm not understanding that comedy is jokes, yes,
[3:28] Speaker 4: but comedy is also what you said, the natural way,
[3:31] Speaker 4: it's it's don't talk about shit that don't have nothing
[3:33] Speaker 4: to do with you.
[3:34] Speaker 5: So that's why I saw.
[3:36] Speaker 4: I opened up for Jamie Fox did terrible, And the
[3:39] Speaker 4: story is that I got my friend to you know,
[3:43] Speaker 4: you know, like you're gonna have to take one for
[3:45] Speaker 4: the team, like you know. I superend that the guy
[3:47] Speaker 4: who was best friends for Jamie like he liked her,
[3:50] Speaker 4: and I was like, you have to take one for
[3:51] Speaker 4: the team. Because because I need to, I need to,
[3:53] Speaker 4: you know, talk to Jamie. So talk to Jamie is
[3:56] Speaker 4: that if we can hang out with them. So she did.
[3:59] Speaker 4: She took one for the team and I and Jamie
[4:03] Speaker 4: told me exactly what I need to hear. He said,
[4:05] Speaker 4: you're so young. You don't have shit to talk about.
[4:08] Speaker 4: He was like, I know you think you have stuff
[4:10] Speaker 4: to talk about, but you don't. You're talking about your
[4:12] Speaker 4: fucking uncle and and Bill Cardon. That shit don't even
[4:16] Speaker 4: sound real. He was like, and even if it was funny,
[4:20] Speaker 4: you're not You're not experienced enough to tell the joke.
[4:25] Speaker 4: He was like, go out and have a life. Go
[4:28] Speaker 4: live your life, Go get your heartbroken, go break some hearts,
[4:32] Speaker 4: go get jobs, go get fired, go have a life
[4:36] Speaker 4: to come back. And I was I was like, yeah,
[4:41] Speaker 4: that's exactly what I did.
[4:43] Speaker 2: Advice.
[4:43] Speaker 4: It was absolutely great advice. And just like you said,
[4:46] Speaker 4: it found me in the first place, it found me
[4:48] Speaker 4: again after that. In ninety three, I got into an
[4:52] Speaker 4: argument with the girl, the girl that we were living together,
[4:55] Speaker 4: and we got into this argument and she was like, yeah,
[4:57] Speaker 4: and you always talking about you want to be a
[4:59] Speaker 4: fucking comedian, but you don't go up and I was
[5:02] Speaker 4: just like, I went upstairs and I called the Comedy
[5:06] Speaker 4: act Theater Michael Williams, and and he just so happened
[5:10] Speaker 4: was answering the phone and answered the phone the owner
[5:13] Speaker 4: of the club, and I said, hey, how do you
[5:17] Speaker 4: How do you do comedy? If I wanted to be
[5:19] Speaker 4: a comedian, Like what would I do? Like how would
[5:22] Speaker 4: I get time? And how would I do that? And
[5:25] Speaker 4: he was like are you funny? And I was like, man,
[5:28] Speaker 4: I really do think I am, but I just don't know.
[5:31] Speaker 4: I've never really been up. He was like, all right,
[5:33] Speaker 4: come down seven thirty. Wow.
[5:36] Speaker 5: I was there at.
[5:37] Speaker 4: Seven o'clock sitting in the in the in the parking lot,
[5:40] Speaker 4: trying to talk myself out of doing it.
[5:42] Speaker 5: I was like, what the fuck are you doing here? Wow? Like,
[5:45] Speaker 5: what are you doing here?
[5:46] Speaker 4: This is I don't know if this is going to
[5:48] Speaker 4: work out like it And I was just so petrified.
[5:50] Speaker 4: And I remember going inside and there was three comedians there.
[5:53] Speaker 4: And this is my first lesson in comedy is they
[5:56] Speaker 4: were like, what kind of jokes you got?
[5:58] Speaker 5: And I was like, oh, I got about this this
[6:00] Speaker 5: and then they was like somebody else already got those jokes.
[6:03] Speaker 5: And then It was the.
[6:04] Speaker 4: First lesson that, and it was always something because what
[6:07] Speaker 4: people didn't understand is I came from the hood, like
[6:10] Speaker 4: I came from like crackheads, crack dealers, you know. I
[6:15] Speaker 4: came from a like a hood where you had to
[6:17] Speaker 4: be smart anyway. So like it's like taking the street
[6:20] Speaker 4: to the street knowledge that I have told me. Yeah,
[6:24] Speaker 4: they trying to fuck with me. But why are you
[6:27] Speaker 4: talking to me? Why if I'm not nothing, then why
[6:29] Speaker 4: you're talking to me? You must be nothing too, because
[6:31] Speaker 4: you here at seven o'clock. Because if you was something,
[6:33] Speaker 4: when you be here when the club.
[6:34] Speaker 2: Is you know, yeah, wouldn't you be here at ten?
[6:37] Speaker 5: Yeah?
[6:38] Speaker 4: I wasn't stupid, right, So I was like, all right, whatever,
[6:40] Speaker 4: And I remember performing that night and I didn't.
[6:43] Speaker 5: Get booed, and it was people were laughing.
[6:47] Speaker 4: So when I came off stage, the manager, not the
[6:50] Speaker 4: manager I talked to, but the manager that runs the
[6:53] Speaker 4: room sharing who today I really feel like every club
[6:57] Speaker 4: needs to shareing. She was, she was a gatekeeper. She's
[7:00] Speaker 4: the one to go, don't come back to my club
[7:02] Speaker 4: unless you're funny, Like, don't come back here. But she
[7:05] Speaker 4: came up to me, she said, oh, you got potential.
[7:08] Speaker 4: You got a lot of it. She was like, keep
[7:10] Speaker 4: writing and keep coming back, keep coming back time for you.
[7:14] Speaker 4: So I was like great, and I started getting better
[7:17] Speaker 4: and better. And at three months I won a contest.
[7:20] Speaker 4: I beat like veterans. I beat veterans. So you know,
[7:25] Speaker 4: at three months you're thinking, you know, you're a little cocky,
[7:27] Speaker 4: and you're like, oh shit, I must be. This is
[7:29] Speaker 4: what you know, Hey, this is how I did it.
[7:32] Speaker 4: I bet you rich why I did like this, and
[7:34] Speaker 4: it's just lessons you got to learn. I remember meeting
[7:37] Speaker 4: David Schapelle and at that time too, I was, well,
[7:39] Speaker 4: I was a hot bitch. Oh I was hot.
[7:42] Speaker 5: I was.
[7:43] Speaker 4: I mean, I'm not saying I'm not hot now, but
[7:45] Speaker 4: I'm saying I'm a different type of hot. I was
[7:48] Speaker 4: long hair, beautiful body because I just, you know, stopped
[7:51] Speaker 4: playing basketball, so my body was just like cow pow
[7:54] Speaker 4: pow and and just gorgeous. And I'm talking about, oh
[7:58] Speaker 4: my god, Like I said, I'm so glad I came
[8:00] Speaker 4: from the street because them comedians, some of the lines
[8:03] Speaker 4: they would.
[8:03] Speaker 5: Give me in I was.
[8:04] Speaker 4: I always knew, never get high on your own supply.
[8:07] Speaker 4: It's the same thing. Never ship where you don't fuck
[8:10] Speaker 4: people you work with, right.
[8:12] Speaker 2: I already had the rule hard way.
[8:14] Speaker 5: Yeah, no, no, we all do.
[8:16] Speaker 4: But but I fucked this dude, uh and and I
[8:22] Speaker 4: knew I shouldn't have did that.
[8:23] Speaker 5: I could have sucked the dude next door.
[8:25] Speaker 4: The same guy, so I know, you know you learn that,
[8:29] Speaker 4: but that you know the immediate Yeah, if you you
[8:33] Speaker 4: could come on the road with me, but you gotta
[8:35] Speaker 4: have sex with me, like you know you the.
[8:38] Speaker 5: Land this ship that people would say to me.
[8:40] Speaker 3: Men are so embarrassing I and I and I would
[8:44] Speaker 3: just check the fire.
[8:45] Speaker 5: I wouldn't fuck you with my enemies. Pussy go away,
[8:48] Speaker 5: you know. I was just like, you know, and I
[8:50] Speaker 5: would make them that, but like you'll never touch me, like.
[8:52] Speaker 4: You're never you know what I'm saying, you have to.
[8:54] Speaker 4: It's just so many things that I was learning in
[8:56] Speaker 4: that three months. Remember talking to a veteran and I
[9:00] Speaker 4: was like, how long is it gonna take me to
[9:01] Speaker 4: make it? I said, how long is it gonna take
[9:04] Speaker 4: me to be like the funniest bitch? Because I really
[9:06] Speaker 4: wanted to be funny. I made a prayer to God
[9:08] Speaker 4: before I started. I said, if I'm not funny, then
[9:11] Speaker 4: you know, let me still be in the field. But
[9:14] Speaker 4: if I don't want to be a comedian, if I'm funny,
[9:16] Speaker 4: i want to be it. If I'm just pretend funny,
[9:19] Speaker 4: and it's like to work into it. And he told me,
[9:22] Speaker 4: he was like ten years. He was like, you gotta
[9:25] Speaker 4: get all the shit out. He was like, first three years,
[9:27] Speaker 4: it's you telling fart jokes and pussy jokes and ass jokes.
[9:30] Speaker 4: And he was like, that's that's the two or three
[9:33] Speaker 4: year old telling jokes.
[9:34] Speaker 1: Like you know, right, you have to mature as a comedian,
[9:38] Speaker 1: as a storyteller.
[9:40] Speaker 5: Yeah, you gotta be. You gotta learn how to be
[9:42] Speaker 5: on stage.
[9:42] Speaker 4: You gotta learn if you're gonna have a drink on stage,
[9:44] Speaker 4: if you're going to hold them, you gotta learn all
[9:46] Speaker 4: that stuff. He was like, your fourth and fifth year
[9:49] Speaker 4: is when you start kind of making money off of
[9:51] Speaker 4: your shit.
[9:52] Speaker 5: He said.
[9:53] Speaker 4: It may be a little earlier because you are funny.
[9:55] Speaker 4: He was like, but you still gotta pay dues. It's
[9:58] Speaker 4: just you just gonna pay them. You know, you got
[10:00] Speaker 4: go through Heckler's I went through all the stages of it,
[10:03] Speaker 4: you know, so yeah, and I tell comedians when you
[10:07] Speaker 4: try to skip the stage. You're not doing any good
[10:10] Speaker 4: for you as an entertainer or for your audience. You're
[10:14] Speaker 4: not doing anyone any good. It's always good to have
[10:17] Speaker 4: a I always think three pigs, three pigs, three pigs.
[10:20] Speaker 4: The one that lived is the one that had the bricks.
[10:23] Speaker 4: He had a strong foundation. Your ship can't blow away.
[10:26] Speaker 4: You gotta and the only way you can have a
[10:27] Speaker 4: strong foundation is to work. You don't want a doctor
[10:31] Speaker 4: that just said woke up one day and said I'm
[10:33] Speaker 4: gonna be a doctor.
[10:34] Speaker 5: You want a doctor that's been trained, that's been in
[10:36] Speaker 5: the field, that knows, that's had experience.
[10:39] Speaker 4: When when when I want to go get my knee checked,
[10:42] Speaker 4: I remember my aunt telling me make sure that he
[10:47] Speaker 4: does surgery.
[10:48] Speaker 5: He this is not know every once in a while, ship.
[10:50] Speaker 4: Make sure that he has set a surgery schedule every week,
[10:54] Speaker 4: like you ask him, do you do surgery or is
[10:56] Speaker 4: this just a case you taking on? And I remember
[10:59] Speaker 4: my knee doctor to laugh and he was like, that's
[11:01] Speaker 4: a good question. He said, I do all the left
[11:03] Speaker 4: knees on Wednesday and all the right knees on Thursday.
[11:06] Speaker 5: And I was just like, loved, you know what I.
[11:08] Speaker 4: Mean, it's shit like that, and he's confident because you
[11:12] Speaker 4: don't want a doctor that's.
[11:13] Speaker 5: Gonna be like I think I'm good. You know, people
[11:17] Speaker 5: tell me you don't want that.
[11:19] Speaker 4: And that's what makes me mad that when people see
[11:22] Speaker 4: that type of confidence on me, I promise, Sophia, I
[11:25] Speaker 4: don't know what it is, but when people see that
[11:28] Speaker 4: type of confidence on me, everybody tries to break it.
[11:32] Speaker 2: Well, the world.
[11:32] Speaker 1: Hates a confident women, and frankly, people are very jealous
[11:37] Speaker 1: of anyone who makes an artistic life. And so I
[11:41] Speaker 1: think the envy and also the loathing from this fucking
[11:46] Speaker 1: you know, white heteronormative patriarchy we all suffer under. Like
[11:52] Speaker 1: I think it really bends people out of shape to
[11:56] Speaker 1: see women embody themselves and laugh at themselves and survive
[12:03] Speaker 1: their mistakes and thrive in their careers. Like they really
[12:08] Speaker 1: get buttered about it.
[12:09] Speaker 4: And I'm telling you it's a thing, and you see
[12:11] Speaker 4: it like they go, it's been First of all, they go, oh,
[12:14] Speaker 4: this is just a this, this is a fluke, This
[12:18] Speaker 4: is a fluke that she's she's getting lucky, and then
[12:21] Speaker 4: they I'm not lucky, and then they go, oh, she's arrogant.
[12:23] Speaker 5: We need to break her down.
[12:25] Speaker 4: Yeah, I'm not saying that that that happened with everybody
[12:30] Speaker 4: at SNL because Lauren Lauren had much respect for me.
[12:34] Speaker 4: That I loved about Lauren Michaels is that he knew
[12:37] Speaker 4: exactly who I was, He knew exactly what I could do.
[12:41] Speaker 4: He understood me in a way, and he loved that
[12:45] Speaker 4: because he loved it because he was like, oh, like,
[12:48] Speaker 4: you know how to work a room. You know how
[12:51] Speaker 4: to be this when it needs to be this. You
[12:53] Speaker 4: know how to be this when it needs to be this,
[12:56] Speaker 4: he says, you know how to work there. So that's
[12:57] Speaker 4: the one thing that Laura Lauren. But the people, some
[13:00] Speaker 4: of the people that worked there were just very how
[13:06] Speaker 4: can I put it, Like you just you're just I
[13:10] Speaker 4: can't explain it. It's like you're just too you're too
[13:15] Speaker 4: what confident, Like I know what I want? I'm sorry,
[13:19] Speaker 4: I know what I want.
[13:20] Speaker 5: I know. You think you know everything. And that was
[13:23] Speaker 5: the thing.
[13:23] Speaker 4: There were people that worked there for years and they
[13:25] Speaker 4: think they knew everything.
[13:27] Speaker 5: Which they probably did, But you don't know me, motherfucker.
[13:33] Speaker 5: Like you should be open to learning.
[13:36] Speaker 4: You should like when I go into hair rooms and
[13:38] Speaker 4: all that, I always say the white hair people should
[13:41] Speaker 4: be able to do black hair because black hair people
[13:45] Speaker 4: know how to do white hair.
[13:46] Speaker 5: Like I'm very much vocal on shit.
[13:49] Speaker 4: Like that because I feel like, like building your portfolio
[13:53] Speaker 4: is a very important thing. You can never know everything,
[13:58] Speaker 4: and I learned that. I learned that again coming up
[14:01] Speaker 4: in comedy, you always gonna learn. They threw me into
[14:04] Speaker 4: S and L as a stand up to a sketch comic,
[14:08] Speaker 4: and that shit is not fucking easy to and and baby,
[14:13] Speaker 4: my ego.
[14:14] Speaker 5: Had to learn that.
[14:15] Speaker 4: Yeah, because I'm gonna tell you, I didn't go in
[14:18] Speaker 4: there with respect for a sketch comedy. I didn't go
[14:20] Speaker 4: in there with no respect. I was like, these are
[14:22] Speaker 4: sketch comedies. These are motherfuckers who couldn't make it and
[14:24] Speaker 4: stand up. That's the attitude I had.
[14:26] Speaker 6: And Baby and Baby, I sat down to that table
[14:31] Speaker 6: read Yeah, these motherfuckers commenced to doing shit that I
[14:36] Speaker 6: have never seen before. Kate McKinnon and changing her accents
[14:42] Speaker 6: in a keenan changing his.
[14:45] Speaker 4: Accents, and Cecily doing literally raw characters. I was just
[14:52] Speaker 4: I literally was at the table like this the whole time.
[14:55] Speaker 4: Like I came, I was missing my lines because I
[14:58] Speaker 4: was so.
[14:59] Speaker 2: Like, oh gross, and they love that.
[15:03] Speaker 4: They loved me because I was their audience. Seriously, I
[15:08] Speaker 4: sat down like I was about to watch the show.
[15:10] Speaker 4: Every table read and they loved it because I really
[15:13] Speaker 4: exactly how.
[15:15] Speaker 5: I'm telling you, This is how the audience is going
[15:17] Speaker 5: to react to that ship.
[15:18] Speaker 4: If I didn't laugh, most likely that sketch didn't get.
[15:22] Speaker 5: It was my first year. It was like Wonderland.
[15:26] Speaker 2: Being in those it's like you win the lottery once
[15:29] Speaker 2: a week, come on.
[15:31] Speaker 4: And that's how I play, and that's how I act,
[15:33] Speaker 4: And that's why I brought a spirit there because I
[15:35] Speaker 4: would come on Saturday and I would literally yell, were
[15:38] Speaker 4: playing baseball tonight, motherfuckers, like it was you know, you
[15:42] Speaker 4: pumped the whole room up.
[15:44] Speaker 2: You know, it's incredible.
[15:46] Speaker 1: And now a word from our sponsors.
[15:57] Speaker 2: You know what I think about that a lot.
[15:59] Speaker 1: Like you know, I have not been in that world yet.
[16:03] Speaker 1: I would love to at some point, Like I love
[16:07] Speaker 1: SNL and I love comedy, but it's like to be
[16:12] Speaker 1: in love with what you do I think is so
[16:14] Speaker 1: important and also to love art like I noticed something
[16:20] Speaker 1: like I'll go to a show, especially if you go
[16:23] Speaker 1: like somewhere in La or somewhere in New York and
[16:25] Speaker 1: like everyone's like standing around watching the singer sing kind.
[16:29] Speaker 2: Of like maybe doing that.
[16:31] Speaker 1: I'm fuck, I'm ass on the floor screaming, dancing like
[16:37] Speaker 1: my friends and I are the people who will get
[16:39] Speaker 1: the whole room dancing.
[16:41] Speaker 2: Oh I'm like we are at a show, like how's
[16:43] Speaker 2: the time of your life?
[16:45] Speaker 1: And make that person who is up there doing his
[16:48] Speaker 1: or her thing feel good?
[16:50] Speaker 5: And like, let me tell you so important.
[16:53] Speaker 4: The first gal I went to, Bruno Mars was performing, right,
[16:57] Speaker 4: so I'm sitting beside eighty and I'm okay, I don't
[17:01] Speaker 4: know about y'all, but I gotta dance, and.
[17:03] Speaker 2: I took out.
[17:04] Speaker 4: Okay, he came and started performing for me at my
[17:08] Speaker 4: table because it's nobody else.
[17:10] Speaker 5: But by the end of that night, everybody was out.
[17:12] Speaker 5: They seek even.
[17:13] Speaker 2: Though everybody had the time of their life, didn't they?
[17:16] Speaker 4: And I remember him saying to me, girl, thank you
[17:19] Speaker 4: was because they wouldn't do it.
[17:21] Speaker 5: Shit, I have the.
[17:25] Speaker 4: Most fun, yes, because you know you, like, I've had
[17:30] Speaker 4: such so many things happen to make you go all right.
[17:34] Speaker 4: You could either be fucking a bum and just be
[17:38] Speaker 4: depressed and die, or you could take this as a
[17:43] Speaker 4: lesson that life.
[17:44] Speaker 5: Is be lifing and you better life life.
[17:47] Speaker 2: Yeah, but you better give it right back. Can I
[17:52] Speaker 2: ask you something? I'm so you know, because that's.
[17:55] Speaker 1: Clearly part of your spirit and it's your tenacity, and
[17:58] Speaker 1: it's all these things. And I wonder when you reflect,
[18:01] Speaker 1: especially on SNL, like do you think it gives you
[18:08] Speaker 1: a perspective because not only is it comedy, but it's
[18:11] Speaker 1: so topical, Like you are able to really reflect on
[18:16] Speaker 1: the world around us, you are able to make fun
[18:20] Speaker 1: of all the politicians. I mean, I think about Melissa
[18:23] Speaker 1: McCarthy doing Sean Spicer. I think about like God, I
[18:26] Speaker 1: think about you had to be there when Trump hosted
[18:28] Speaker 1: in twenty fifteen.
[18:30] Speaker 6: But I think about that, but I didn't at that time, Sophia.
[18:34] Speaker 5: I didn't.
[18:36] Speaker 4: He wasn't the president, and I thought it was hilarious.
[18:40] Speaker 4: Everybody in New York was something he sucks. Everybody was
[18:43] Speaker 4: so pussy was coming. But I thought it was hilarious
[18:45] Speaker 4: because I'm like, he's the apprentice. He's harmless.
[18:49] Speaker 1: I literally was.
[18:49] Speaker 2: Like, he's fucking harmless, Like he's a mosquito. Why who cares?
[18:53] Speaker 5: He's the fucking apprentice? What the fuck? Oh god.
[18:55] Speaker 4: I didn't know he was dangerous until the host mail
[18:59] Speaker 4: and that uh Milania, Jared and Ivaca was there and
[19:04] Speaker 4: I was I remember I remember looking at Tarran and
[19:07] Speaker 4: I said, Tarran, I think I'm supposed to kill this
[19:10] Speaker 4: whole side of the table. And he was like, can
[19:14] Speaker 4: I get my food first? Let me get my food
[19:16] Speaker 4: and get it to go, and then whatever you need
[19:18] Speaker 4: to do. Because and I always think back to that,
[19:20] Speaker 4: I said, was I supposed to because like none of
[19:23] Speaker 4: this would be going on if I would be in yes,
[19:26] Speaker 4: but I might have saved the word.
[19:30] Speaker 5: And everybody was like, no, it's okay.
[19:32] Speaker 2: Oh my god, it's okay that you didn't murder.
[19:35] Speaker 5: I love it.
[19:37] Speaker 1: I also love that you'll just say it like something
[19:39] Speaker 1: I love about you.
[19:40] Speaker 4: You know, he fucking thinks it, and they know what
[19:43] Speaker 4: they like.
[19:47] Speaker 1: All the years that I've been a fan of your work,
[19:49] Speaker 1: like you're you're not especially politically cautious, You're blunt, You're
[19:55] Speaker 1: willing to say the thing like.
[19:58] Speaker 2: Has that ever caught Stu?
[20:00] Speaker 5: Yeah?
[20:00] Speaker 2: Do you ever get scared? I mean, shit's cost me
[20:04] Speaker 2: for sure. So I'm like, oh yeah.
[20:06] Speaker 4: I had to really learn how to deal with the
[20:09] Speaker 4: business part of this business. You can't talk to certain
[20:14] Speaker 4: people in a certain way because they can't take it
[20:18] Speaker 4: like you have to Like I could be real, and
[20:21] Speaker 4: I usually am very real. But what I learned is I,
[20:25] Speaker 4: as the star, can't say it. I have to get
[20:29] Speaker 4: someone else to say it. I gotta always look prestine,
[20:33] Speaker 4: and even when I handle something, it has to be.
[20:37] Speaker 4: But what I've learned and then my mistakes, is how
[20:40] Speaker 4: to kind of be in the middle with it. I
[20:45] Speaker 4: I don't yell anymore because I used to yell because
[20:48] Speaker 4: I used to think that's the only way people could
[20:50] Speaker 4: hear me, because it seemed like that's the only time
[20:53] Speaker 4: that people would do it when I would go the
[20:56] Speaker 4: fuck off or when I would yell. But then I
[20:58] Speaker 4: started learning that you're gonna love this. So I live
[21:02] Speaker 4: my life by the God or the Godfather a little.
[21:05] Speaker 5: Bit just for brothers.
[21:07] Speaker 4: Okay, So sometimes I can be Sonny. But sometimes if
[21:10] Speaker 4: I'm Sonny, I might get shot up at the tobos.
[21:13] Speaker 4: So sometimes I can only use Sonny. Every once in
[21:16] Speaker 4: a while, Sonny cannot come out because like, everybody's scared
[21:19] Speaker 4: of Sonny. Everybody not my sisters, my assistants do not
[21:24] Speaker 4: like when Sunny come out, but they know how to
[21:26] Speaker 4: handle Sonny. Like my sistants are great, they know how
[21:29] Speaker 4: to handle Sonny, and and my friends know how to
[21:33] Speaker 4: handle Sundy Sonny, but the people outside of my circle
[21:37] Speaker 4: don't know how to handle Sonny. Right, Sonny is very
[21:40] Speaker 4: like you said, Blunt, what the fuck? Why is this
[21:42] Speaker 4: fucking happening? I need you know what I'm saying, But
[21:46] Speaker 4: so Sonny can't come out. So sometimes I'm afraid of
[21:50] Speaker 4: very vulnerable and like okay, but I don't understand why
[21:54] Speaker 4: this can happen. Like okay, okay, okay, I'm just telling
[21:58] Speaker 4: y'all right now that this is what I that's fraid Oh,
[22:01] Speaker 4: Michael is the motherfucker that just patient and he says
[22:07] Speaker 4: what he wants and he doesn't repeat it because you
[22:09] Speaker 4: heard me the first time. I don't have to repeat
[22:12] Speaker 4: what it is. We've worked with me before. You know
[22:16] Speaker 4: that I don't take no bullshit. Go talk to my
[22:19] Speaker 4: manager like he would send him to Tom, his lawyer.
[22:22] Speaker 4: Go talk to Tom. You don't need You don't get
[22:26] Speaker 4: to talk to me unless I want to be present, right,
[22:30] Speaker 4: So so that's how sometimes you have to handle the business.
[22:35] Speaker 4: And everybody has a Sonny. Everybody has a Michael, and
[22:39] Speaker 4: I love about my writer Lenny.
[22:42] Speaker 5: He'll go, I need you to be Michael. I need
[22:45] Speaker 5: you to be Michael to wow, I love that. Okay, good, okay,
[22:50] Speaker 5: and then he'll I love it.
[22:52] Speaker 2: I love it.
[22:54] Speaker 1: The Three Boys from the Godfather and the Three Ghosts
[22:56] Speaker 1: of Christmas Past.
[22:57] Speaker 2: We really covered some shit today.
[23:01] Speaker 5: This is what I'm.
[23:02] Speaker 4: Saying, so Fie, when you listen to stuff like this,
[23:05] Speaker 4: right and you hear this right, we as humans, we
[23:09] Speaker 4: know what right and wrong is.
[23:12] Speaker 5: We know what right and wrong is.
[23:14] Speaker 4: Now there's a such thing is that if you don't know,
[23:16] Speaker 4: then that's we'll give you the plausible you know, deniability.
[23:21] Speaker 4: But you do better when you know better, and stop
[23:25] Speaker 4: fighting your conscience. Your conscience is trying to tell you
[23:28] Speaker 4: to grow, and it's okay to grow. You guys always
[23:31] Speaker 4: think of things like this painful. It is suffering. Oh
[23:35] Speaker 4: I'm going through No, you're growing, You're growing. Your mind
[23:40] Speaker 4: doesn't want fuck shit no more. Your mind is telling
[23:43] Speaker 4: you I want to grow, and you keep feeding me shit.
[23:47] Speaker 4: And there's a lot of us that fight that because
[23:49] Speaker 4: a lot of us think I just want to be
[23:51] Speaker 4: a normal person. I just want to go to work
[23:53] Speaker 4: every day. I want to pay my bills. I want
[23:54] Speaker 4: to come home and watch TV. I want to do no, no, no, no, no.
[23:57] Speaker 4: No one is normal. No one is is fucking normal.
[24:01] Speaker 4: No one is excluded from what it is that your
[24:03] Speaker 4: fucking faith and your job is, even if it's just
[24:06] Speaker 4: being the teacher, even if it's being a crossing guard,
[24:09] Speaker 4: even if it's just getting up and fucking giving people
[24:11] Speaker 4: compliments every day.
[24:12] Speaker 5: You have a job.
[24:14] Speaker 4: You are a specific piece of art that was made
[24:17] Speaker 4: by God, and you have one purpose in life, and
[24:21] Speaker 4: that is to be you. Stop trying to be other
[24:23] Speaker 4: people because that you're fell in the mission.
[24:27] Speaker 5: Be you.
[24:27] Speaker 4: You are special. There's something about you, something about you
[24:31] Speaker 4: that you're supposed to be given to someone. And that's
[24:34] Speaker 4: what I always tell everybody. The only way that we're
[24:37] Speaker 4: gonna beat what's going on right.
[24:38] Speaker 5: Now, it's very obvious.
[24:40] Speaker 4: The only way, the only way that this gets beat
[24:43] Speaker 4: is that everybody has to start digging, digging deeper into themselves,
[24:48] Speaker 4: digging deeper into themselves, because the only thing that's gonna
[24:52] Speaker 4: beat this much hate is love.
[24:55] Speaker 5: Yeah, I promise you don't want to hear that.
[24:58] Speaker 4: But that's the only thing that's gonna if we fights
[25:02] Speaker 4: between the races. The Asians now hate the Blacks, and
[25:05] Speaker 4: then the Mexicans hate the Asian. All that shit is
[25:08] Speaker 4: for a reason to keep us bundled up so we
[25:11] Speaker 4: don't fight.
[25:12] Speaker 5: What the fuck is really right there in front of us.
[25:14] Speaker 1: If we're busy fighting each other, we're not fighting the
[25:17] Speaker 1: top of the power structure.
[25:19] Speaker 5: That hard that part.
[25:20] Speaker 2: So yeah, that's what has to change. That is what
[25:24] Speaker 2: has to change.
[25:25] Speaker 4: Absolutely, it starts to drive. It starts inside. It starts inside.
[25:30] Speaker 4: Everybody needs to think about what it is that they
[25:33] Speaker 4: are as a person, what it is that they receive.
[25:37] Speaker 5: How do you receive love? Start there, because you can't
[25:40] Speaker 5: get what you don't have, you can't.
[25:43] Speaker 4: Give, and if you look inside yourself, you will look
[25:45] Speaker 4: and see that you haven't. Like I tell people all
[25:48] Speaker 4: the time, whenever somebody to be like, oh I'm just
[25:49] Speaker 4: so fucking stupid, don't say that.
[25:51] Speaker 2: Stop talking about yourself like that.
[25:53] Speaker 4: Don't talk yourself doesn't know when you're fucking joking yourself
[25:56] Speaker 4: don't know.
[25:57] Speaker 5: It just takes it in and it.
[25:58] Speaker 4: Builds that that little bad thing that touches on you.
[26:03] Speaker 4: And now you got that shit. Stop doing that. Yeah,
[26:06] Speaker 4: like like when you've done something to be like, oh man,
[26:08] Speaker 4: I can't believe I did that.
[26:10] Speaker 5: Well, let's not make that mistake again.
[26:12] Speaker 4: Do that?
[26:13] Speaker 2: Yes, you're right, do that?
[26:15] Speaker 5: Because would you tell your friend that?
[26:17] Speaker 4: Would you say to your friend you're a dumblit Yeah,
[26:20] Speaker 4: you're so funny stupid? Why would you make that. You
[26:22] Speaker 4: wouldn't talk to your friend like that. You wouldn't talk
[26:24] Speaker 4: to your kids like that. Why you talk to yourself
[26:26] Speaker 4: like that? You go to sleep with yourself, you see
[26:29] Speaker 4: yourself in the morning, you eat with yourself. You're pissed
[26:31] Speaker 4: with yourself, You're shit with yourself, You're sick with yourself.
[26:34] Speaker 5: You better start licking yourself. That's your best friend. Yah,
[26:38] Speaker 5: stop it stop.
[26:40] Speaker 2: Can't wait.
[26:40] Speaker 1: I can't wait to click that audio and make it
[26:43] Speaker 1: my ring tone. Thank you for the pep talk, and
[26:48] Speaker 1: now a word from our sponsors who make this show possible.
[27:03] Speaker 1: I want to talk with you all day and I
[27:05] Speaker 1: also want to pump up with me too.
[27:07] Speaker 5: We be friends.
[27:09] Speaker 2: Do you even know for real?
[27:11] Speaker 5: What have I seen you on?
[27:12] Speaker 4: I recognized that mold. I don't know what I've seen
[27:15] Speaker 4: you on? What have I seen you on? I recognize
[27:18] Speaker 4: that mode? You look you look like if you mail
[27:21] Speaker 4: but not Kristen.
[27:22] Speaker 1: Bell, if you like cop stuff. Did you watch Chicago Patty.
[27:29] Speaker 2: And like SVU?
[27:30] Speaker 6: Yeah, yeah, yeah, I've seen your face.
[27:37] Speaker 5: I don't forget a face to feel. Oh, I'm excited
[27:40] Speaker 5: and I'm gonna you are gorgeous.
[27:44] Speaker 2: You sweet sweet.
[27:46] Speaker 6: I mean the whole ponytail with the perkut the middle
[27:49] Speaker 6: because my hair is you got the rings.
[27:52] Speaker 5: You got the rings on? Like you about the popa
[27:54] Speaker 5: bitch in a face?
[27:56] Speaker 1: Listen you want to you talk about the Godfather. I'm like,
[27:59] Speaker 1: I was joking this. I got to host the View
[28:01] Speaker 1: last week and I'm like sitting there talking shit with
[28:04] Speaker 1: whoop be In Sonny and you know, I was like, look,
[28:06] Speaker 1: things are crazy.
[28:07] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[28:08] Speaker 1: All these people need to go to jail. Like Michelle
[28:10] Speaker 1: Obama says, when they go low, we go high. Like
[28:13] Speaker 1: my mom was raising the Bronx. When you go low,
[28:15] Speaker 1: I'm going to meet you in the fucking gutter.
[28:16] Speaker 2: I'm done.
[28:17] Speaker 5: When you go low, I'm going to hell. Yes, but when.
[28:21] Speaker 1: Sonny goes, Sonny goes, I'm going to the core of
[28:23] Speaker 1: the earth. I said, Okay, that's the mood for twenty
[28:25] Speaker 1: twenty six.
[28:26] Speaker 2: But it's like for you, you're out.
[28:28] Speaker 1: On a stand up tour right now. Yeah, And I
[28:30] Speaker 1: think about this because obviously you're talking to people in
[28:33] Speaker 1: cities all over the place about what's going on. You're
[28:35] Speaker 1: making it funny, but you're giving people pep talks, and
[28:39] Speaker 1: you are also traveling around the nation, like some places
[28:43] Speaker 1: you go are going to be less receptive than others.
[28:45] Speaker 5: Now, what what's like the.
[28:47] Speaker 1: Core of the tour? Where are you going? How are
[28:50] Speaker 1: you thinking about talking to people in twenty twenty six?
[28:54] Speaker 4: I go everywhere, I go everywhere, and you know what's
[28:56] Speaker 4: amazing my and see you could tell by a media
[29:00] Speaker 4: and their audience.
[29:01] Speaker 5: My audience is so amazing.
[29:03] Speaker 4: They they tip, they're nice, they're polite, they're they're there
[29:07] Speaker 4: for comedy.
[29:08] Speaker 5: Uh, it's a great audience. But you know what's so crazy.
[29:11] Speaker 4: I have fans that I don't and when I see
[29:14] Speaker 4: them in the audience, I go.
[29:16] Speaker 5: Oh, that's really cool, you know what I'm saying. But
[29:23] Speaker 5: I don't.
[29:23] Speaker 4: See what I see on the internet. I see a
[29:27] Speaker 4: whole different type of people.
[29:29] Speaker 5: They're all b.
[29:30] Speaker 2: This is why we need to be together exactly.
[29:32] Speaker 4: And even when I go out in the towns and
[29:35] Speaker 4: walk around like I forgot where it was we went,
[29:37] Speaker 4: and I was like, this is.
[29:39] Speaker 5: I don't see. I don't racist, I don't see, I don't.
[29:45] Speaker 4: See what what what it is that we're reflected on
[29:47] Speaker 4: the internet, And I really believe that's why we don't
[29:50] Speaker 4: need to be on it all the time and get
[29:52] Speaker 4: out and meet real people because my audience is everywhere
[29:55] Speaker 4: I go. They're awesome. And I love touring. I love talking.
[30:01] Speaker 4: I love making people laugh.
[30:02] Speaker 1: Where do people get the info on the rest of
[30:04] Speaker 1: the tour? Do they go?
[30:05] Speaker 2: Instagram?
[30:06] Speaker 5: My Instagram?
[30:07] Speaker 4: And also my my special that I did on Peacock
[30:11] Speaker 4: is on YouTube now, so yes, we got all kinds
[30:14] Speaker 4: of things.
[30:15] Speaker 5: And then the show is coming out on HGTV. Roast
[30:18] Speaker 5: my rental.
[30:19] Speaker 1: I'm so excited.
[30:20] Speaker 2: I want to do an HGTV so bad.
[30:22] Speaker 5: We got to work together.
[30:23] Speaker 2: We have to.
[30:25] Speaker 4: Yes, I think I know what I want you from. Okay,
[30:28] Speaker 4: my god, this could be interesting. I was thinking about
[30:31] Speaker 4: who could do it, and now I know, And you
[30:33] Speaker 4: have the perfect face for it.
[30:35] Speaker 1: From this moment, like you have so much going on,
[30:38] Speaker 1: You've accomplished so much.
[30:40] Speaker 4: But like.
[30:41] Speaker 1: When you're a storyteller, when you're insatiably curious. You always
[30:45] Speaker 1: want to do the next thing. What feels like your
[30:48] Speaker 1: work in progress right now?
[30:49] Speaker 5: I want to I want to do a drama. I
[30:53] Speaker 5: would love to do a drama.
[30:54] Speaker 4: I would love to play a serial killer actually, and
[30:58] Speaker 4: I would just love, like, you know, it's really good
[31:01] Speaker 4: when a comedian plays that type of part because it's
[31:03] Speaker 4: really creepy and and and.
[31:06] Speaker 5: I just I want to do something like that. I
[31:08] Speaker 5: want to love that. Yeah, I want to. I want
[31:10] Speaker 5: to roll away. I'm crying.
[31:12] Speaker 3: We're good, you know, you know you want your Viola
[31:18] Speaker 3: moment eight or the best cry I've ever seen.
[31:23] Speaker 2: Anyone do on camera. I think about it twice a week.
[31:26] Speaker 5: What Vola Davis when she's.
[31:29] Speaker 2: Looking at them.
[31:31] Speaker 1: I was like, oh's so crazy and she does that
[31:36] Speaker 1: beautiful like her teeth are and she's Jean and the
[31:42] Speaker 1: growl and I'm just like, I worship with the Church
[31:45] Speaker 1: of Viola.
[31:46] Speaker 5: Like that's it.
[31:47] Speaker 2: I'm done.
[31:48] Speaker 6: I bat when she's oh my god.
[31:53] Speaker 1: One time when Angela Bassett has the moment where she
[31:58] Speaker 1: goes when she takes like the breath before she starts
[32:02] Speaker 1: in on you, and You're just like, I'm going to
[32:04] Speaker 1: die now. And I want to like, she's so anyway
[32:08] Speaker 1: we could talk about them.
[32:10] Speaker 2: Yeah, I love that. A drama.
[32:12] Speaker 1: Maybe a killer like you wanted to be.
[32:15] Speaker 2: You wanted to be the cop.
