## Transcript

[0:14] SPEAKER_00: Hello, friends, welcome to the Bible Journey Daily Podcast.
[0:20] SPEAKER_00: Just a quick update: things are well progressed in my preparation for our next season together when we'll be going through the New Testament book of Philippians.
[0:29] SPEAKER_00: I've mapped out the whole journey, looks like it's going to be around 15 episodes.
[0:34] SPEAKER_00: And I've created the roadmap, if you like, my notes for preparation for the first couple of episodes already.
[0:42] SPEAKER_00: But today I'm continuing in this between the season short series where I'm just going to tell you about some of the other podcasts that I do.
[0:52] SPEAKER_00: And today I want to look and tell you a little bit about the Renewed Mind podcast, one that tries to reflect the silent struggle that a lot of people go through, Christians and non-Christians, and in fact, it's a silent struggle that we see in the pews of our churches every week.
[1:12] SPEAKER_00: Now if you've been walking alongside me on this main podcast, the Bible Journey, the daily one, you know the rhythm of what I do here.
[1:23] SPEAKER_00: Every single morning, Monday to Friday, we open up the scriptures, we sit, we work through it chapter by chapter, verse by verse, and we look together at the eternal life-giving truth of God's Word.
[1:36] SPEAKER_00: I think most of us who come here love the Bible.
[1:39] SPEAKER_00: We love the scriptures, and we know that God's Word is a lamp to our feet and a light to our path.
[1:44] SPEAKER_00: But over the years in conversations with listeners, patrons, church members, close friends, I've come across a quiet, heavy reality that often sits silently in our pews, in our living rooms, everywhere, every single day.
[2:00] SPEAKER_00: And it goes something like this.
[2:02] SPEAKER_00: Some committed believers wake up in the morning, they know they love the Lord with all their heart, they sit down with their Bible and pray, and they'll listen to a daily devotional, and yet underneath it all they carry a sort of suffocating weight of anxiety, a cloud of heavy, lingering depression, or even intrusive, sparrowing thoughts that make them feel utterly exhausted before the day even begins.
[2:31] SPEAKER_00: And then along comes the secondary weight, the weight of the spiritual shame they feel because they're struggling in this way.
[2:38] SPEAKER_00: Too often, well-meaning Christians absorb a harmful, unscriptural message that says, if you truly had enough faith and if you prayed a little harder or read your Bible more, or simply claimed the victory over your anxiety and depression, then you would see it instantly vanish.
[2:56] SPEAKER_00: And so, when the struggle persists, many believers suffer in silence.
[3:01] SPEAKER_00: They wear a brave smile to church on a Sunday morning while secretly wondering what is wrong with me?
[3:07] SPEAKER_00: Why is my faith not fixing my brain?
[3:10] SPEAKER_00: Am I failing God in some way?
[3:13] SPEAKER_00: Now, if you've ever felt that way, or if you're loving someone right now who is walking through a dark valley like that, maybe your spouse or a child or simply a close friend, I want you to hear me very clearly right now.
[3:28] SPEAKER_00: You are not a failure and you are not alone, and experiencing mental or emotional suffering is not a sign of weak faith, and it's certainly not a sign of spiritual defeat.
[3:38] SPEAKER_00: The Bible never promised us immunity from the things of the world, physical or even just the mental exhaustion or emotional anguish that can affect all of us who live in this what is, after all, a broken world.
[3:52] SPEAKER_00: In fact, some of the greatest heroes of the faith in our Bible, men and women who walked intimately with God, still experienced profound seasons of emotional darkness.
[4:03] SPEAKER_00: Think of David in the Psalms, crying out, Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me?
[4:11] SPEAKER_00: Then think of Elijah under that fig tree.
[4:14] SPEAKER_00: He was exhausted, overwhelmed, and actually asked God to take his life.
[4:18] SPEAKER_00: Or think of Jeremiah, nicknamed by some the weeping prophet because of his frequent lamentations, or the Apostle Paul, who spoke openly of being burdened beyond measure and feeling this sort of heavy earthly despair.
[4:35] SPEAKER_00: God does not rebuke these believers for their emotional sufferings.
[4:39] SPEAKER_00: He meets with them, and he meets them with grace, sustenance, and care.
[4:44] SPEAKER_00: And that is precisely why I wrote my book A Renewed Mind a couple of years ago.
[4:49] SPEAKER_00: And that is why I have created a dedicated sister podcast titled The Renewed Mind Podcast.
[4:56] SPEAKER_00: It wasn't my plan and purpose when I first went into ministry, but when God called me and gave me the privilege of carrying this burden and supporting other people in these areas that God could take this and use it for good in my life, in my struggles, but also supporting others who struggle in this way.
[5:19] SPEAKER_00: Now, this other podcast is hosted over at the renewed mind podcast.bussprout.com, and the podcast and the show is specifically designed to try and bridge the gap that I see, the gap that exists between sound biblical theology and practice, and all those helpful evidence-based mental health tools that are utilized out there in the world and in our healthcare systems.
[5:46] SPEAKER_00: It is a safe, compassionate, and non-judgmental space created solely to try and help you understand how your God-given mind works and how you can manage or overcome anxiety and depression, or equip you to help walk alongside others who are struggling in this area.
[6:07] SPEAKER_00: When I launched my first podcast right from the beginning, my very first podcast was meant to be something that enabled people who had caring responsibilities to be able to access Bible study and regular worship when their caring responsibilities meant that they weren't able to attend church services.
[6:26] SPEAKER_00: Anyway, today I want us to take a breather from this our regular daily format to explain and explore why mental renewal is a vital part of your spiritual walk in life and give you a little taster of the practical tools that I have shared over the show in the last year.
[7:24] SPEAKER_00: At the very heart of the podcast and the book lies that foundational scripture which many of us can recite from memory, Romans 12.2, where we hear the apostle write, Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God and what is good and acceptable and perfect.
[7:46] SPEAKER_00: Now, when we read a phrase like be transformed by the renewing of your mind, we intuitively know that that is vitally important.
[7:55] SPEAKER_00: But what does it actually look like in practice?
[7:58] SPEAKER_00: What does it look like when you're sitting in your living room at two o'clock in the morning with a racing pulse, a tight chest, or a mind sparreling into catastrophic anxiety?
[8:09] SPEAKER_00: How do you practically renew a mind that feels hijacked sometimes by panic or just flattened, anithnotized by depression?
[8:19] SPEAKER_00: Now, historically, the church has sometimes swung between two rather unhelpful extremes when dealing with issues around mental health.
[8:28] SPEAKER_00: On one side, there's the hyper-spiritualized approach that treats every emotional struggle purely as a demonic attack or a lack of personal prayer or study time, ignoring the very real social, physical, and cognitive realities of how our brains and bodies function in this, which is after all a fallen world.
[8:49] SPEAKER_00: But then on the other side, there is those who take a purely secular approach and treat human beings as if we're mere chemical machines, ignoring the spiritual realm altogether, ignoring the reality and the effects of sin and the need for redemptive hope and the ultimate truth that can be found in God's word.
[9:08] SPEAKER_00: And that's where I hope the renewed mind podcast can exist.
[9:12] SPEAKER_00: It can sit between these two worlds together in a beautiful, I hope, harmonious blend.
[9:19] SPEAKER_00: You see, God is the author of all truth.
[9:22] SPEAKER_00: And the same God who inspired Holy Scripture is also the God who designed the human brain and its infinitely complex neural pathways.
[9:30] SPEAKER_00: And when we look at proven evidence-based psychological tools, such as cognitive behavioral therapy or CBT, as many call it, what we discover is remarkable, being that modern clinical practice is simply catching up to what Scripture has been teaching for thousands of years.
[9:49] SPEAKER_00: When Paul tells us in 2 Corinthians 10 verse 5 to take every thought captive to obey Christ, he is describing a very clear mental process, isn't he?
[9:59] SPEAKER_00: He is calling us to step back from our automatic internal monologue, maybe those intrusive thoughts, and examine our thoughts in the light of the truth revealed in the Bible and refuse to let it be distorted or deceived through the thoughts that run wild in our subconscious.
[10:18] SPEAKER_00: In medical terms, cognitive reframing teaches us to identify those distortive thought patterns, things like catastrophizing all or nothing thinking, emotional reasoning, or personalizing every negative event that happens out there, even when they don't directly involve us.
[10:38] SPEAKER_00: When we experience anxiety or simply low moods, our brains naturally generate automatic negative thoughts that can feel almost 100% true in the moment, even when they are completely false or simply exaggerated.
[10:53] SPEAKER_00: Well, on the podcast, we don't just tell you to think positive, and I'm certainly not going to tell you to simply have more faith.
[11:00] SPEAKER_00: I want to try and walk with you step by step through the actual mechanicals of biblical mental renewal and how you can practically apply it in your life.
[11:11] SPEAKER_00: How to recognize those automatic negative thoughts the moment they arise, how to evaluate those thoughts objectively using both evidence and the bedrock truth of Scripture, how to dismantle the cognitive distortions that fuel chronic anxiety and those things that can lead to very dangerous depressive sparrows, and how to replace them, to replace the distorted patterns with habitual biblical truth that can calm the nervous system and restore emotional balance.
[11:42] SPEAKER_00: We approach the whole person in this series, body, mind, and spirit.
[11:48] SPEAKER_00: And I definitely want us all to recognize that taking care of our mental health can be done, of course, through structured cognitive tools, but also simply through a healthy lifestyle, good financial stewardship, and proper support from the community around us.
[12:05] SPEAKER_00: Now, none of that, of course, is a replacement for faith, but it is an act of faithful stewardship over the mind and the way we choose to live with these minds that God has given us.
[12:17] SPEAKER_00: It's about providing practical, biblical, and Christian-inspired tools for the renewed mind.
[12:24] SPEAKER_00: On the podcast, every episode, I try to give people tangible strategies that you can choose to implement, hopefully, the very same day.
[12:34] SPEAKER_00: Now, to give you a taste of what we've covered, I want to walk through a few frameworks that I've explored in depth through the podcast series.
[12:44] SPEAKER_00: Firstly, the technique of intercepting negative thoughts.
[12:48] SPEAKER_00: So this first tool helps you deal and enables you to grab those automatic destructive thoughts that pop up in your head.
[12:57] SPEAKER_00: In modern cognitive therapy, some psychologists talk about automatic negative thoughts, or ants for short.
[13:05] SPEAKER_00: These are the reflexive, involuntary interpretations that flash through our mind when something stressful occurs.
[13:12] SPEAKER_00: For instance, you make a minor mistake at work and your brain instantly leaks to the conclusion, well, I'm going to get fired for this, or I'm a failure, I can't do anything right.
[13:22] SPEAKER_00: Or you experience a sudden physical symptom, like a racing heart, and your mind immediately catastrophizes.
[13:29] SPEAKER_00: Something is terribly physically wrong with me, or I'm about to lose control.
[13:34] SPEAKER_00: Left unchecked, these little automatic thought triggers have an immediate emotional and physical stress response.
[13:42] SPEAKER_00: Your body reacts to the thought as though it were absolute, undeniable, and a reality.
[13:48] SPEAKER_00: And on one of the podcasts, I teach a simple three-step process to catch these thoughts in real time.
[13:55] SPEAKER_00: That being, first of all, identify, pause and label the thought, and ask yourself what story is my mind telling me now.
[14:02] SPEAKER_00: Secondly, to evaluate it, put the thought on trial.
[14:06] SPEAKER_00: What is the actual objective evidence for and against this thought?
[14:10] SPEAKER_00: If this thought is a proven fact or is a cognitive distortion, like catastrophizing or exaggerating or emotional reasoning or false emotional reasoning, then we are to reframe it, replace the distorted thought with a grounded biblically aligned truth.
[14:28] SPEAKER_00: Not just a fluffy positive response or woolly thinking, but objective, expressing a compassionate reality towards yourself rooted in God's promises to you and the facts of that.
[15:23] SPEAKER_00: Another tool I talk about in another episode is one that helps you reliably measure your low mood.
[15:30] SPEAKER_00: It's specifically designed for seasons of depression, low mood, or just burnout.
[15:37] SPEAKER_00: When someone experiences depression, there is a often a loss of momentum that goes along with that.
[15:43] SPEAKER_00: Tasks feel impossibly overwhelming, leading to avoidance and withdrawal.
[15:47] SPEAKER_00: But as you withdraw, you stop experiencing small wins or moments of joy, which causes your mood to drop even further, creating a sort of vicious, paralyzing cycle.
[15:59] SPEAKER_00: To break this cycle and the paralysis it brings, we utilize a behavior tool that some call the mastery and pleasure scale.
[16:08] SPEAKER_00: Well, how it works, you simply take your daily activities, even the tiny basic tasks like getting up and straightening your bed again, taking or maybe taking a 10-minute walk, or watering a plant that needs watering, or answering that one email that needs answering, and then rate them on two separate not to five numerical scales.
[16:29] SPEAKER_00: The five score lie within the scales of mastery.
[16:33] SPEAKER_00: How much a sense of achievement, effort, or accomplishment did you feel this task gave you?
[16:39] SPEAKER_00: The normal scale use is not for none, with five a feeling of significant achievement, and then you mark it for pleasure.
[16:46] SPEAKER_00: How much genuine satisfaction or comfort even or simply joy did you experience during or after you've done this specific task?
[16:56] SPEAKER_00: The score might be anything from naught to zero to five, a great sense of joy.
[17:01] SPEAKER_00: The point here is that when you are depressed, your brain lies to you.
[17:05] SPEAKER_00: It tells you nothing will feel good.
[17:08] SPEAKER_00: Doing something will be pointless, and I've accomplished nothing by doing it.
[17:13] SPEAKER_00: By recording the aught to five actual ratings in an activity schedule, you provide your brain with visual, concrete data that contradicts that depressive narrative you're telling yourself.
[17:27] SPEAKER_00: It helps you recognize and appreciate even those small victories.
[17:32] SPEAKER_00: And by doing it, you can systematically reintroduce daily momentum without overloading yourself.
[17:40] SPEAKER_00: And finally, one of the most requested topics I've had from people who've messaged me through the show is how can they support a friend, a family member, or a spouse who is struggling with severe anxiety or depression.
[17:55] SPEAKER_00: Some practical frameworks for supporting others are offered throughout this podcast series.
[18:02] SPEAKER_00: You know, when someone we love is suffering, our instinct as a partner, certainly as a Christian, is sometimes to try and jump in and try and help them fix it.
[18:12] SPEAKER_00: But if we aren't careful, we can often fall into one of two traps, either offering superficial spiritual cliches, like just hand it over to God, which in a way invalidates that person's pain, or take on the burden ourselves so heavily that we end up emotionally drained and burned out ourselves.
[18:31] SPEAKER_00: On the Renewed Mind podcast, I try to provide practical guidelines for walking alongside someone with a healthy degree of grace and wisdom.
[18:42] SPEAKER_00: Techniques like active listening without trying to fix, learning to validate someone's emotional experience without immediately trying to solve their feelings or preach to them, and encouraging people to take steps, tiny steps even, micro steps even, helping them engage in little, tiny, manageable daily actions rather than pushing them forward to some distant overwhelming goal.
[19:08] SPEAKER_00: Also, techniques and how to maintain healthy emotional boundaries, understanding the difference between bearing one another's burdens, as suggested in Galatians chapter 6, and actually not falling into the tap into the trap of taking responsibilities for another personal emotional state.
[19:31] SPEAKER_00: Now, as a daily Bible listener, you might be asking yourself, well, I can see the value of these emotional tools, and I can understand they can help with my mental and emotional well-being, but how does focusing on my mental well-being actually complement my daily walk with God?
[19:48] SPEAKER_00: Won't spending time effectively thinking and looking at psychological strategies distract from the simple path of daily Bible reading and prayer time?
[19:59] SPEAKER_00: Now, I want to offer you three potential reasons why renewing your mind and caring for your mental health will actually make your time spent in Bible study richer, deeper, and potentially more fruitful.
[20:13] SPEAKER_00: Firstly, by a little bit of self-care, it helps you clear the mental noise that is needed for true deep spiritual contemplation.
[20:23] SPEAKER_00: I wonder if like me you ever sat down to read the scriptures or spend time in prayer only to have your mind hijacked by some fears or thoughts, literally sometimes even overwhelmed by a tidal wave of panic or intrusive thoughts or that sense of dread.
[20:40] SPEAKER_00: You see, when your nervous system is trapped in a sort of chronic fight or flight mode, your brain is busy managing those threat responses.
[20:48] SPEAKER_00: It therefore can become almost impossible to focus and meditate on a verse or rest simply in God's presence.
[20:57] SPEAKER_00: But by using the practical tools to help calm you both physically and mentally, you can manage those sparring thoughts and you can reduce that internal noise that keeps breaking in, and you can create a quiet, settled space, a mental space where you can sit down with God's word attentively absorbing its truth with clarity rather than reacting to everything with panic.
[21:24] SPEAKER_00: It also frees you to approach Scripture more through a lens of grace, not one of fear.
[21:32] SPEAKER_00: It's been demonstrated that someone who is struggling with unaddressed anxiety or depression means that the cognitive distortions they live under don't just affect their daily view of life, it can distort their whole view of God.
[21:47] SPEAKER_00: Anxious minds will tend to approach and filter scripture through a lens of fear, legalism, and hypervigilance, zeroing in on the judgment of God while glossing over the grace of God.
[22:02] SPEAKER_00: An unhealthy focus on end times theology can be something that affects some people.
[22:08] SPEAKER_00: You see, depressed minds tend to filter God's promises through feelings of fear or worthlessness.
[22:16] SPEAKER_00: Assuming that God's love applies to everyone else except them can be an extreme version of it.
[22:21] SPEAKER_00: And as you learn to identify and dismantle these distortions, those spiritual blinkers will fall away.
[22:29] SPEAKER_00: You can truly begin to read the Bible through its true original lens the glorious, unconditional grace of God in Jesus Christ.
[22:37] SPEAKER_00: And then third.
[22:39] SPEAKER_00: It can help you build sustainable emotional stammer for a life of long-term discipleship.
[22:46] SPEAKER_00: The Christian life we know is not a short sprint, it's a long pilgrimage, a marathon, and yet so many sincere believers burn out emotionally and spiritually because they ignore the warning signs or the mental pain or the exhaustion or the chronic stress that they're living under, or sometimes just the unresolved emotional pain.
[23:08] SPEAKER_00: Ignoring your mental health in the name of spiritual busyness is a little like driving a car on an empty tank whilst ignoring the engine warning light at the same time.
[23:19] SPEAKER_00: Eventually the car will break down, the wheels will come off, the engine will cease.
[23:25] SPEAKER_00: Learning how to steward your mind and pace your emotional and spiritual energy, utilize daily structure and practice renewal is not a selfish thing.
[23:38] SPEAKER_00: It is in fact a vital aspect of a long-term life of discipleship.
[23:43] SPEAKER_00: It ensures that you can remain spiritually resilient, emotionally stable, and equipped not only to love God, but to love your family, serve in your local church in a balanced way, and walk with God for the long haul.
[23:58] SPEAKER_00: Now, if any of what I've discussed today speaks to you at any level to your heart, or if you're looking for a safe, compassionate space to help you explore and find mental clarity for yourself, or if you just simply want to be better equipped to support someone you love, I want to warmly invite you to subscribe to this new podcast today.
