[1:56] Speaker 3: it's time to talk about the Milwaukee Brewers taking two
[2:01] Speaker 3: straight from the San Diego Padres. Matt, thank you so
[2:05] Speaker 3: much for joining us.
[2:07] Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely. How do you feel?
[2:08] Speaker 3: My first question is just how do you feel?
[2:13] Speaker 1: Exhausted, excited, a little bit of everything. That was a
[2:18] Speaker 1: wild couple of games between just two teams. juggernauts, just
[2:23] Speaker 1: two heavyweights fighting it out in the ring. The, the
[2:27] Speaker 1: atmosphere was just absolutely insane. You know, I've been going
[2:31] Speaker 1: to Brewers games at that stadium for, for years now
[2:35] Speaker 1: and never heard it as loud as I've heard it
[2:38] Speaker 1: in there this weekend.
[2:39] Speaker 5: We talked about it going into this series and you
[2:42] Speaker 5: mentioned this even before we hit record that, you know,
[2:44] Speaker 5: everybody had been talking about how hot the Padres are
[2:46] Speaker 5: and we were guilty of this. Like, and I think
[2:48] Speaker 5: we had a little bit of this like numbness to,
[2:51] Speaker 5: How good the Brewers just continuously were throughout the year
[2:53] Speaker 5: that the Brewers almost matching how good the Padres were
[2:56] Speaker 5: down the stretch was just status quo for them. But
[2:58] Speaker 5: for the Padres, it was like, hey, this is the
[3:00] Speaker 5: hottest team in baseball going into the playoffs. And as
[3:02] Speaker 5: we see in the Brewers have been able to stay hot.
[3:05] Speaker 5: And these both these games, though, I mean, really flip
[3:08] Speaker 5: of a coin could go either way.
[3:10] Speaker 2: And that's just how it is.
[3:11] Speaker 5: It's so crazy with these five game sets that super
[3:14] Speaker 5: tight series, two really good teams. ball doesn't go your
[3:16] Speaker 5: way or doesn't roll your way in two games. And
[3:19] Speaker 5: all of a sudden you're quickly facing elimination here. But
[3:22] Speaker 5: that seems like the Brewers, it's just what they've had
[3:24] Speaker 5: going for them all year. Of course, we go with
[3:26] Speaker 5: game one where they're in the driver's seat. They set
[3:28] Speaker 5: themselves up and they almost had what happened to them
[3:31] Speaker 5: late where they give up the lead there. We have
[3:34] Speaker 5: to get the elephant out of the room here and
[3:36] Speaker 5: like address the elephant in the room, the fly ball.
[3:39] Speaker 2: And it's already been like the discourse.
[3:41] Speaker 5: I'm sure when you got to the ballpark, it was
[3:43] Speaker 5: all everybody was talking about as well for the next game. Um,
[3:47] Speaker 5: Ty France, it's a ball hits off the roof. They
[3:49] Speaker 5: were joking before the game that that never, never happens.
[3:51] Speaker 5: And like, ironically said that, Oh, like it'll happen today
[3:55] Speaker 5: because it never has in six years that I've been here.
[3:57] Speaker 2: And of course it happens. It seems like corny foreshadowing
[3:59] Speaker 2: in a movie.
[4:00] Speaker 5: It happens first and foremost, have you, do you remember
[4:03] Speaker 5: another time where the roof's been hit like that?
[4:05] Speaker 2: And from your vantage point, did you think that was
[4:07] Speaker 2: gone off the bat?
[4:09] Speaker 1: Most of us in the press box thought it was gone.
[4:12] Speaker 1: I mean, when that thing just kept carrying and carrying, um, Yeah,
[4:15] Speaker 1: a bunch of the players on the Brewers and Murph
[4:20] Speaker 1: himself said that they thought it looked like it was
[4:23] Speaker 1: going foul. Of course, members of the Padres did not
[4:27] Speaker 1: think so or their fans. But it it sure looked
[4:32] Speaker 1: like it was going. And when you watch the replays
[4:35] Speaker 1: of it, I mean, you 100 percent see it change direction.
[4:38] Speaker 1: where it hits the truss or cable and drops straight down. And,
[4:43] Speaker 1: you know, Churio got a lot of props for afterwards
[4:46] Speaker 1: for hanging with that play and still securing the catch
[4:50] Speaker 1: off the deflection.
[4:51] Speaker 4: But it looked like it was going out.
[4:54] Speaker 1: And we all thought that the Padres had taken the
[4:58] Speaker 1: lead at that point. Then, of course, it's a lot of,
[5:02] Speaker 1: you know, you see the umpires kind of meet and
[5:06] Speaker 1: then break up. And then meet again. And there was
[5:10] Speaker 1: a lot of just tenseness in the air at American
[5:13] Speaker 1: family field, whether it was thinking, well, that should be
[5:18] Speaker 1: an out. I mean, if you see the umpires keep
[5:23] Speaker 1: doing that, you start getting that little bit of doubt
[5:25] Speaker 1: in your head of like, are they going to overturn this? Like,
[5:29] Speaker 1: what are the rules here? Do I not know the rules?
[5:31] Speaker 1: And yeah, it was just a crazy all around situation.
[5:35] Speaker 3: I feel like when I saw that happen, when it
[5:37] Speaker 3: first went off the bat, my reaction was that is
[5:41] Speaker 3: way gone, but foul. And then, you know, it stays
[5:44] Speaker 3: in the yard and it hits the roof. And my
[5:46] Speaker 3: first instinct is shock where, how did that not go foul?
[5:50] Speaker 3: And how is that not in the seats and how
[5:52] Speaker 3: was it caught? And then my next reaction was, well,
[5:54] Speaker 3: if it hits the roof, shouldn't it be a dead ball,
[5:57] Speaker 3: but instead it was just ruled and out in that situation.
[6:01] Speaker 3: I'm curious kind of your initial thoughts right after when
[6:04] Speaker 3: he caught the ball and like kind of the pandemonium
[6:07] Speaker 3: that ensued after the play was basically made. And they
[6:11] Speaker 3: just said, yeah, it's, it's a fly out. That's the
[6:14] Speaker 3: part that shocked me. And that's why I immediately tweeted
[6:18] Speaker 3: that the Padres got robbed here because it's one thing
[6:21] Speaker 3: when I thought he would either leave the park and
[6:23] Speaker 3: go foul or leave the park and be a Homer
[6:26] Speaker 3: versus just a run of the mill fly out when
[6:29] Speaker 3: it hits something that like a roof. Did you share
[6:33] Speaker 3: that same reaction or did you feel differently?
[6:36] Speaker 1: I think the first thing was trying to figure, you know, they,
[6:39] Speaker 1: they initially call it an out and once everyone, you know,
[6:43] Speaker 1: kind of starts meeting and the, and the doubt is
[6:45] Speaker 1: there in the room, it's kind of a.
[6:47] Speaker 4: Matter of, all right, who actually, who knows the rules here? Because,
[6:50] Speaker 4: you know, I'm not going to lie. Like I hadn't,
[6:52] Speaker 4: I had memorized roof rules in my visits to, to
[6:58] Speaker 4: that stadium.
[6:59] Speaker 1: So everyone's kind of, going around, a couple people in
[7:03] Speaker 1: the press box have the game on. And credit to
[7:07] Speaker 1: the broadcast, they were really quick to get the rules
[7:11] Speaker 1: out there for the audience saying, you know, if a
[7:13] Speaker 1: ball hits in fair territory, it's a fair ball and
[7:17] Speaker 1: playable wherever it ends up landing.
[7:19] Speaker 4: If it hits in foul territory, it's a foul ball.
[7:23] Speaker 4: And you think back to when they had to make
[7:26] Speaker 4: these rules.
[7:26] Speaker 1: I mean, this is before we had stat casts and
[7:29] Speaker 1: were able to tell based off trajectories, what a ball
[7:33] Speaker 1: would have been. And so, you know, you've got to
[7:36] Speaker 1: set some sort of rule and not go with a
[7:39] Speaker 1: gut of, well, it hit the roof, but it looked
[7:44] Speaker 1: like it was going to be a home run. So
[7:46] Speaker 1: we're going to rule it a home run. Like that's
[7:47] Speaker 1: no way to have rules. So, you know, the rules
[7:50] Speaker 1: have been set the way they've been for a while.
[7:52] Speaker 4: And it's, it's.
[7:54] Speaker 1: Unfortunate in a way almost that we have all this
[7:57] Speaker 1: technology where we can see where a ball would have gone.
[8:01] Speaker 4: But at the same time, the ground rules are the
[8:02] Speaker 4: ground rules.
[8:03] Speaker 1: So, yeah, it was a little bit of confusion at
[8:06] Speaker 1: first until, you know, started finally getting some word of,
[8:09] Speaker 1: you know, people who were able to get a hold of, OK, no,
[8:12] Speaker 1: these are the rules.
[8:13] Speaker 4: We're just waiting for the umps to call it official
[8:16] Speaker 4: at this point.
[8:17] Speaker 3: Aram, I love this answer for Matt, and I already
[8:20] Speaker 3: love Matt's analysis already, but he's kind of giving me
[8:22] Speaker 3: the vibes of, you know, when Jared Goff is asked
[8:25] Speaker 3: about that call against New Orleans. Do you remember that,
[8:29] Speaker 3: that playoff game? Okay, well, basically, if I'm not, you know,
[8:32] Speaker 3: talking to some football guys, but basically the refs, there
[8:36] Speaker 3: was like a PI call at the end of a
[8:38] Speaker 3: football game, and Jared Goff is asked routinely, what did
[8:42] Speaker 3: you think about the call? And he's like, the refs
[8:44] Speaker 3: got it right. that matt's doing right now.
[8:46] Speaker 5: But they did get it right in this instance but
[8:49] Speaker 5: in this instance they did get it right the rules
[8:51] Speaker 5: are the rules and and i think that's where it
[8:54] Speaker 5: could be a fascinating conversation of like should it just
[8:57] Speaker 5: be like a re-pitch do we call it a strike
[8:59] Speaker 5: a foul ball like it's unfortunate that it has to
[9:03] Speaker 5: result in an out but as you mentioned like matt
[9:06] Speaker 5: if if troio doesn't play that it would have been
[9:08] Speaker 5: one of those oh my gosh what a fortunate outcome
[9:11] Speaker 5: for The Padres, because it would have bounced down.
[9:14] Speaker 2: He didn't know that he should have caught it.
[9:15] Speaker 5: It's a double and nobody knew the rules and everybody
[9:18] Speaker 5: would be throwing their hands up and saying, well, how
[9:19] Speaker 5: do you how was he supposed to know that he
[9:21] Speaker 5: was supposed to catch that? So good on Troy. I
[9:23] Speaker 5: think that was just instinct for him to grab it. Like,
[9:25] Speaker 5: who knows if he really thought that through? But if
[9:28] Speaker 5: you just let that drop or if that was, you know,
[9:30] Speaker 5: if it was kicking down 10 feet away from him,
[9:32] Speaker 5: is he going to run after it?
[9:33] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[9:35] Speaker 5: It was it saved them that he made that grab
[9:38] Speaker 5: and that is the rules I'm interested to see if
[9:39] Speaker 5: they're going to change it and the other aspect is
[9:41] Speaker 5: you know when you go and search you know batted
[9:43] Speaker 5: balls 105 miles an hour at 49 degree angles like
[9:46] Speaker 5: they pretty much have never left the ball the yard
[9:48] Speaker 5: ever in the stat cast era however there's always outliers
[9:51] Speaker 5: there was a couple that were really close that ball
[9:53] Speaker 5: was was absolutely just it looked like demolished off of
[9:57] Speaker 5: the bat so you never know i think the reason
[10:01] Speaker 5: why a lot in the stack has ever haven't been
[10:02] Speaker 5: homers is usually at that angle at that ev for
[10:05] Speaker 5: it to look like it's gone those are the ones
[10:08] Speaker 5: that maybe hook foul because you get it so far
[10:09] Speaker 5: out front i don't know we'll never know it's unfortunate
[10:13] Speaker 5: there um in that regard but was just a wild
[10:16] Speaker 5: way to end it And I do appreciate though. It
[10:19] Speaker 5: seems like everyone kind of just accepted at that point.
[10:21] Speaker 5: You went into the next game. And in this instance here, though,
[10:24] Speaker 5: the Padres had the opportunity to control their own destiny here.
[10:28] Speaker 5: They needed the best closer in baseball to go do something.
[10:30] Speaker 5: He hasn't done in a little bit here. I think
[10:32] Speaker 5: he did it early in September to go get that
[10:34] Speaker 5: two inning save essentially. And he just seems like he
[10:37] Speaker 5: ran out of gas there. I want to just tee
[10:40] Speaker 5: up Matt. Like you're around the clubhouse there. You see
[10:43] Speaker 5: the energy with this team and, and Jackson Choreo. Now,
[10:47] Speaker 5: is it his third post season and has put up
[10:51] Speaker 5: an OPS over a thousand. And I know it's not
[10:53] Speaker 5: the biggest sample ever, but just seems to never blink
[10:56] Speaker 5: in these big moments. And there's veterans on this team. There's,
[10:59] Speaker 5: there's guys that have been around for 10 plus years.
[11:02] Speaker 5: And it seems like Jackson Chorio is the guy, no
[11:04] Speaker 5: matter what that you want up at the plate, more
[11:06] Speaker 5: than anybody, more than the 10 year vets, more than,
[11:09] Speaker 5: you know, whoever's the hottest hitter at the time, the
[11:11] Speaker 5: 22 year old, for some reason, it seems like the
[11:14] Speaker 5: most even keeled guy that you want up in the
[11:16] Speaker 5: biggest spot.
[11:18] Speaker 4: Yeah, he thrives in these moments.
[11:21] Speaker 1: He wants to be that guy. He said as much
[11:24] Speaker 1: after the game that he has the support of the
[11:28] Speaker 1: clubhouse to be that guy, and he wants to succeed
[11:32] Speaker 1: in those moments. He had told a story afterwards, after
[11:36] Speaker 1: the game, about a game, I don't remember if it
[11:39] Speaker 1: was this year or previously, where he was actually facing
[11:42] Speaker 1: Munoz from Seattle, and he had a chance to win
[11:47] Speaker 1: the game for the team. and ended up you know
[11:50] Speaker 1: striking out or getting out somehow and the Brewers end
[11:52] Speaker 1: up losing and he said that that really stuck with
[11:56] Speaker 1: him and he never wanted to feel that feeling again
[11:59] Speaker 1: so he was going to work so hard to the
[12:02] Speaker 1: point that anytime he was going to be relied upon
[12:04] Speaker 1: for that big hit he was going to come through
[12:06] Speaker 1: more often than not and Murph just raved about him
[12:10] Speaker 1: you know after both games because he had the he
[12:13] Speaker 1: had the two run homer in the first game as
[12:15] Speaker 1: well to tie it up and then you know, the
[12:17] Speaker 1: walk off here, you know, just, just amazed at how
[12:21] Speaker 1: far he's come for how young he is.
[12:24] Speaker 4: He always had.
[12:25] Speaker 1: You know, when he was coming up through the minors
[12:27] Speaker 1: and RM, I know you saw this too, I'm sure,
[12:30] Speaker 1: you know, in, in scouting him and looking at him
[12:32] Speaker 1: in the minor minors, he had such just a mature.
[12:36] Speaker 4: Approach and mindsets.
[12:38] Speaker 1: The, the, the Brewers coaches at all different levels raved
[12:42] Speaker 1: about it. And now, his teammates get to see it
[12:45] Speaker 1: and Yelich and Freelick were in there after the game
[12:50] Speaker 1: as well in the postgame press conference and talking about
[12:53] Speaker 1: the same thing. You know, they have all the faith
[12:55] Speaker 1: in the world that if, if Cheerio is going to
[12:57] Speaker 1: be up there at the plate in a big moment,
[13:00] Speaker 1: they trust him to go out and do it.
[13:01] Speaker 4: And he's just proving it.
[13:03] Speaker 1: Like you said, no PS over a thousand now in
[13:05] Speaker 1: his postseason career for a 22 year old, the guy's 22,
[13:09] Speaker 1: like just insane.
[13:11] Speaker 3: He could be a senior at LSU right now. And
[13:14] Speaker 3: Mason Miller going into that outing in the ninth inning,
[13:19] Speaker 3: in the playoffs, four and two thirds, one hit, 12 strikeouts.
[13:25] Speaker 3: Practically unhittable. I was at Wrigley when Mason Miller came out.
[13:30] Speaker 3: And Cubs fans, at least the ones sitting around me,
[13:32] Speaker 3: didn't know a lot about Mason Miller, right? They're diehard
[13:35] Speaker 3: Cubs fans. They're not really paying attention to the rest
[13:37] Speaker 3: of the league. And his first pitch is 103. And
[13:40] Speaker 3: you could hear a collective roar. Oh no. Kind of
[13:43] Speaker 3: come in and the Brewers, they could have laid down too. Right.
[13:47] Speaker 3: But instead they fight, they fight, they fight just like
[13:50] Speaker 3: they've been doing all season long and Jackson Choreo gets
[13:52] Speaker 3: the big hit, but let's rewind for a second because
[13:56] Speaker 3: we have podcast P AKA big league analysis. So you
[13:59] Speaker 3: can follow on Tik TOK on Instagram on X as well,
[14:03] Speaker 3: who does these incredible game recaps podcast P without further ado.
[14:08] Speaker 3: Let's talk about it, and then we'll dive straight back
[14:10] Speaker 3: into our conversation with Matt.
[14:12] Speaker 6: Happened in Game 2 of the NLDS between the Brewers
[14:15] Speaker 6: and Padres? Well, let's talk about it. After the wild
[14:20] Speaker 6: ending of last night that saw a roof-assisted out help
[14:23] Speaker 6: Milwaukee win, the Padres got revenge early. Ty France, who
[14:26] Speaker 6: hit that aforementioned ball, clutched up with a two-out RBI single.
[14:30] Speaker 6: But after this, the story was just pitching and defense
[14:33] Speaker 6: for a while. Michael King was sensational, finishing four perfect,
[14:36] Speaker 6: while Logan Henderson became a lot sharper after tying his
[14:39] Speaker 6: career high in walks. But both guys got help. Bogart's
[14:42] Speaker 6: guide went on the line on the left that David
[14:44] Speaker 6: Hamilton ran 107 feet back on to catch Willie Mays
[14:48] Speaker 6: style for the out. Manny Machado made a vintage barehanded
[14:51] Speaker 6: play to nab Pratt at first. Pratt got revenge by
[14:54] Speaker 6: stealing this hit from Merrill with a spectacular leaping grab.
[14:58] Speaker 6: And then finally, Fernando Tatis Jr. made a stellar sliding
[15:01] Speaker 6: catch on a sinking Churrio batted ball. However, in the fifth,
[15:05] Speaker 6: the defense slipped. The usually sure-handed Terang let this potential
[15:09] Speaker 6: inning-ending double play go through his legs, which later led
[15:11] Speaker 6: to a run on a Harris fielder's choice. But the
[15:14] Speaker 6: crew finally woke up, not only ending Kings Perfecto on
[15:17] Speaker 6: this Jelic double, but killing the shutout when Sal Frehley
[15:20] Speaker 6: came through with an RBI single. Henderson's day ended in
[15:23] Speaker 6: the sixth after this hit by Pitcher France. Including playoffs,
[15:26] Speaker 6: this is his 24th career start, and he's allowed three
[15:28] Speaker 6: or less runs in every single one of those. The
[15:31] Speaker 6: longest streak in MLB history to start a career when
[15:33] Speaker 6: you exclude openers. Kings Day also ended at five plus innings.
[15:37] Speaker 6: He was able to drop his career postseason ERA to
[15:39] Speaker 6: two flat. But fast forward to the seventh, and the
[15:41] Speaker 6: defensive aggression continued. David Hamilton botched this Tatis grounder, which
[15:45] Speaker 6: later had him in scoring position with two outs. And
[15:48] Speaker 6: following France pushing both teams to 7-for-7 on ABS challenges,
[15:52] Speaker 6: he continued to get his payback with his second 2-out
[15:55] Speaker 6: RBI knock of the game that also ended the inning
[15:58] Speaker 6: when Machado was cut down at third. So Milwaukee had
[16:01] Speaker 6: to get going, and it seemed as they did. With
[16:03] Speaker 6: the runner on, Christian Yellich banged one deep to center.
[16:06] Speaker 6: But instead, Jackson Merrill made this leaping grab to extend
[16:09] Speaker 6: the Brewers' captain's postseason RBI drought to 83 plate appearances.
[16:14] Speaker 6: But it was here where the poor defense bug bit
[16:17] Speaker 6: San Diego. Hamilton chopped on the Cronenworth who couldn't get
[16:20] Speaker 6: it cleanly, throwing it out of play to not only
[16:22] Speaker 6: give Milwaukee a run, but also two runners in scoring
[16:25] Speaker 6: position for Jack Centurio. But he would ground up to short,
[16:28] Speaker 6: allowing the Padres to stay in front and hand the
[16:31] Speaker 6: ball to Mason Miller with just six outs left for
[16:34] Speaker 6: the crew. And while he handled the first three easily,
[16:36] Speaker 6: the Knights saw him walk the bases loaded with two
[16:39] Speaker 6: outs for who else but Jack Centurio. the postseason franchise
[16:42] Speaker 6: leader on homers at just 22 years old.
[16:44] Speaker 2: And after he fouled.
[16:45] Speaker 6: Off 104 with two strikes and spit on a slider
[16:49] Speaker 6: off it, Churio would do this. What else can you say?
[17:04] Speaker 6: The kid just has it. And now the Brewers are
[17:06] Speaker 6: one win away from the NLCS.
[17:09] Speaker 3: I also want to start with Logan Henderson, right? Because
[17:12] Speaker 3: this was his first career playoff start. And, you know,
[17:16] Speaker 3: Arm and I were going back and forth on our predictions.
[17:19] Speaker 3: you know, I had the Brewers, he had the Padres,
[17:21] Speaker 3: but what we both agreed on was that this Padres
[17:23] Speaker 3: offense was going to be really tough on this Brewers
[17:26] Speaker 3: pitching staff. And we even saw Miz struggling a little
[17:28] Speaker 3: bit right in his first outing. And then Logan Henderson
[17:31] Speaker 3: comes out and Logan Henderson has been so good this season,
[17:34] Speaker 3: especially at American family field, one eight, four ERA diabolical
[17:40] Speaker 3: in the second half, but kind of ran into issues.
[17:44] Speaker 3: And I wouldn't really say issues, but we're putting Logan
[17:47] Speaker 3: Henderson on a, on a pedestal, right. Because of how
[17:50] Speaker 3: good he's been. So issues basically relating to his talent level.
[17:54] Speaker 3: How did you feel that he did in his first
[17:57] Speaker 3: career post-season start? And how do you feel that he
[18:01] Speaker 3: worked within or worked out of a couple of jams,
[18:04] Speaker 3: just Logan Henderson's first start? How did it feel watching it?
[18:09] Speaker 1: Yeah, it wasn't quite as smooth, obviously, as you're used
[18:12] Speaker 1: to with Henderson, like you said, you know, tightest career
[18:15] Speaker 1: high and, in walks and control is something that he
[18:18] Speaker 1: very much prides himself on that the team is, you know,
[18:23] Speaker 1: feel so comfortable with him on the mound is because he's,
[18:27] Speaker 1: you know, not allowing those free passes. It says a
[18:31] Speaker 1: lot about him that he was able to work out
[18:33] Speaker 1: of those jams. And again, you know, mentioned the kind
[18:38] Speaker 1: of some of the defensive lapses there, which, which, There's
[18:44] Speaker 1: been some uncharacteristicness of that with the Brewers in both
[18:47] Speaker 1: of these games.
[18:49] Speaker 4: Four errors now.
[18:50] Speaker 1: In a couple, you look back to Jake Bauer's decision
[18:54] Speaker 1: in game one to throw home when he really should
[18:57] Speaker 1: have just taken that out at first. There was a
[18:59] Speaker 1: play tonight that wasn't an error, but no one was
[19:02] Speaker 1: covering first. So those don't help a player like Misurowski,
[19:06] Speaker 1: who's still young, or Henderson, who's technically young. rookie still
[19:12] Speaker 1: this year with his status. And yet he still ended
[19:16] Speaker 1: up being able to get himself through that. Got himself through,
[19:20] Speaker 1: you know, the first two innings where he threw almost
[19:22] Speaker 1: 40 pitches, almost 50, 50 strikes to ball. So that
[19:25] Speaker 1: goes to show where his control was at the very beginning.
[19:28] Speaker 1: And yet still continues the streak of, you know, three
[19:32] Speaker 1: and runs or less in every single start that he's
[19:34] Speaker 1: ever had. This one ends up being two runs. Only
[19:37] Speaker 1: one of them earned though. Um, it, it was impressive
[19:41] Speaker 1: in that sense. And like, uh, Pat Murphy said after
[19:44] Speaker 1: the game, now he's got it out of the way.
[19:46] Speaker 1: You know, he, he's a rookie in his first start
[19:49] Speaker 1: in the post season. very, your number two starter, like
[19:52] Speaker 1: how often is that the case with your rookie starter?
[19:57] Speaker 1: And he was able to really just power through some
[20:00] Speaker 1: rough control things, not quite being, you know, the way
[20:04] Speaker 1: he wanted them to look and, you know, some other
[20:07] Speaker 1: external factors. Plus on top of all of that, the
[20:10] Speaker 1: Padres offense.
[20:13] Speaker 4: And he ends up.
[20:13] Speaker 1: Really turning out a start that could have been a
[20:16] Speaker 1: heck of a lot worse considering all those things.
[20:19] Speaker 4: So impressive in that sense.
[20:22] Speaker 1: And hopefully now that that one's kind of in the
[20:24] Speaker 1: rear view, his next, assuming he gets a next start
[20:27] Speaker 1: in the playoffs ends up feeling a little bit more natural.
[20:31] Speaker 5: Building off of that, because we knew that's your game
[20:33] Speaker 5: two guy, and then they have said that for the Brewers,
[20:36] Speaker 5: their next starter will be Dustin May. How do you
[20:39] Speaker 5: see the rest of this rotation kind of shaking out?
[20:42] Speaker 2: I know Pat Murphy's going to kind of keep his
[20:45] Speaker 2: cards close.
[20:45] Speaker 5: To his vest here, but you have multiple pitchers that
[20:49] Speaker 5: are capable of starting, but could also piggyback if May
[20:52] Speaker 5: isn't able to go long tomorrow or in their next ballgame.
[20:55] Speaker 5: You got Drohan, you got Gasser, who both, especially Gasser,
[20:58] Speaker 5: look sharp down the stretch, and then I don't know
[21:01] Speaker 5: how much you trust or what kind of role Kyle
[21:03] Speaker 5: Harrison's in, but I imagine shorter spurts is probably better.
[21:07] Speaker 2: What do you kind of foresee?
[21:08] Speaker 5: Because, of course, you want to end it if you're
[21:10] Speaker 5: the Brewers in three, but you also need to be
[21:13] Speaker 5: equipped to where it doesn't avalanche.
[21:15] Speaker 2: If you go all in on three, don't close the door.
[21:18] Speaker 5: You don't want to leave the door too far open
[21:20] Speaker 5: for the Padres to then grab game four as well
[21:22] Speaker 5: and then force it where anything can happen in game five.
[21:25] Speaker 5: Do you have any inkling on how the Brewers will
[21:28] Speaker 5: approach this? behind Dustin may now in this next ball game.
[21:31] Speaker 5: And then beyond that, if there is another, you know,
[21:33] Speaker 5: a couple of games.
[21:34] Speaker 1: What would make a lot of sense to me is
[21:37] Speaker 1: if you in game three, starting Dustin may, you know,
[21:41] Speaker 1: you let him go as long as you can, but
[21:42] Speaker 1: the second you feel uncomfortable, you go from the righty
[21:45] Speaker 1: may to the lefty drawing, who has been really good
[21:49] Speaker 1: out of the bullpen and game four, like you said,
[21:53] Speaker 1: gas or look really good down the stretch. When he
[21:56] Speaker 1: debuted last A couple of years ago before he got hurt,
[21:59] Speaker 1: looked really good as a rookie, a little bit unexpected
[22:03] Speaker 1: considering some.
[22:03] Speaker 4: Of the guys they had in the pipeline and then
[22:06] Speaker 4: ends up having that injury.
[22:07] Speaker 1: Maybe took a little bit longer to just shake off
[22:10] Speaker 1: that rust and feel natural this year, but looked really
[22:13] Speaker 1: good late. And so I could see them actually piggybacking
[22:18] Speaker 1: and going gasser with the start, the lefty in game
[22:22] Speaker 1: four and switching to the righty Chad Patrick. kind of
[22:25] Speaker 1: piggybacking off of him. Again, let him go as long
[22:28] Speaker 1: as you can. Murph, he'll give those guys trust. And
[22:32] Speaker 1: if they're, you know, he's not going to necessarily keep
[22:37] Speaker 1: them on a pitch count for the sake of a
[22:38] Speaker 1: pitch count. If they look good, he'll let them continue
[22:41] Speaker 1: to look good. But I think he's shown with the
[22:44] Speaker 1: bullpen so far in these first couple games that he's
[22:46] Speaker 1: willing to break away from kind of the norms that
[22:49] Speaker 1: he set during the regular season to do what needs
[22:52] Speaker 1: to be done to win. I think you saw that
[22:55] Speaker 1: with Uribe these last couple of games where he was
[22:58] Speaker 1: deployed in the seventh, but he was, that was done
[23:02] Speaker 1: because the top of the order was coming up and
[23:04] Speaker 1: he said, I'm going to throw one of my best
[23:06] Speaker 1: guys against their best guys. Didn't a hundred percent, you know,
[23:10] Speaker 1: work out the way as planned because Uribe, you know,
[23:14] Speaker 1: struggled getting out of a couple of those innings, but
[23:16] Speaker 1: the logic at least made sense. And it goes to
[23:18] Speaker 1: show that, Hey, we're going to, we're going to, use
[23:22] Speaker 1: the matchups that make the most sense to us and
[23:25] Speaker 1: whatever gets us to the finish line with a win.
[23:28] Speaker 3: Can you walk me through your thought process in that
[23:30] Speaker 3: ninth inning with the walks and knowing Mason Miller's coming in,
[23:34] Speaker 3: you're down. You know, it's knowing that you got two
[23:38] Speaker 3: in front of you in San Diego at Petco in
[23:41] Speaker 3: front of those fans where it seems like it's going
[23:43] Speaker 3: to be really tough to win a ball game. So
[23:46] Speaker 3: if you drop this one, it gets a little bit dicey.
[23:49] Speaker 3: You know, Mason Miller is coming in. Like, walk me
[23:52] Speaker 3: through your thought process from when Mason Miller enters to
[23:56] Speaker 3: when Jackson Torrio gets that crazy walk-off hit.
[23:59] Speaker 1: I was wondering, I figured he'd come in in the eighth.
[24:01] Speaker 1: I didn't necessarily know that he'd start the eighth. So
[24:05] Speaker 1: as soon as he comes out of the bullpen, you know,
[24:08] Speaker 1: everyone in the press box is going, he's going to.
[24:12] Speaker 4: Like, he's absolutely going to.
[24:14] Speaker 1: And you look at the end, even when he started walking, guys,
[24:17] Speaker 1: there was no activity in the Padres' bullpen.
[24:19] Speaker 4: Like, it was.
[24:20] Speaker 1: Mason Miller's game to lose at that point. And so
[24:24] Speaker 1: already had an idea. And same thing as Uribe. They
[24:27] Speaker 1: bring in Miller with the two, three, four batters in
[24:31] Speaker 1: the Brewers' lineup. coming in absolutely makes sense. You bring
[24:34] Speaker 1: in your best guy against their best guys. And then
[24:37] Speaker 1: theoretically you're starting to get towards the end of the
[24:39] Speaker 1: lineup should potentially get easier, but not that, not that
[24:43] Speaker 1: any matchup is easy and major league baseball, but you're
[24:47] Speaker 1: at least not top of the order anymore.
[24:50] Speaker 4: So it made sense.
[24:51] Speaker 1: And yet they're the brewers, the woodpeckers of MLB just
[24:56] Speaker 1: do what they do and they just start getting on base.
[24:59] Speaker 1: And again, You start to see, you know, a couple
[25:02] Speaker 1: of crazy moves there at the ends. Andrew Vaughn comes
[25:06] Speaker 1: in for Cooper Pratt. Gary Sanchez ends up coming in
[25:09] Speaker 1: for Hamilton. Murph was asked his thoughts, you know, his
[25:13] Speaker 1: thought process on that at the end of the game,
[25:15] Speaker 1: he said, I was not concerned about the 10th inning.
[25:17] Speaker 1: All I was thinking about was the ninth. I wanted
[25:20] Speaker 1: to bring in some guys, you know, who are more veterans.
[25:22] Speaker 1: You've got younger guys in Pratt and Hamilton, more veteran
[25:26] Speaker 1: in Sanchez and Vaughn. They've kind of, been in those
[25:29] Speaker 1: moments before and wanted to, you know, just bring them
[25:32] Speaker 1: in and see what they could do. Vaughn almost, you know,
[25:36] Speaker 1: had a big one there, just got it off the
[25:38] Speaker 1: wrong part of the bat and Sanchez and Sanchez got
[25:41] Speaker 1: a ton.
[25:42] Speaker 4: Of credit for, for really setting the tone for Churio.
[25:45] Speaker 1: Obviously, you know, you know, if he doesn't get on, then,
[25:49] Speaker 1: then that's done unless he ends up walking it off himself.
[25:52] Speaker 1: But just his process and how he took some really, really,
[25:56] Speaker 1: tough to lay off of pitches and that at bats.
[25:59] Speaker 1: They were, a lot of the press conference was about
[26:02] Speaker 1: how that was just as important too. But we all
[26:06] Speaker 1: thought that Miller was going to go to, and as
[26:09] Speaker 1: the ninth inning kind of starts going in, it's like, okay, well,
[26:13] Speaker 1: you know, all right, we got to, we got someone
[26:15] Speaker 1: on base.
[26:16] Speaker 4: Someone else on base. Oh, there's an out. Okay. Mason
[26:19] Speaker 4: Miller is potentially doing his.
[26:20] Speaker 1: Things, but, the brewers, they said, you know, all our
[26:23] Speaker 1: focus was, um, Sal and yellow said it after the game,
[26:26] Speaker 1: our focus was just turning it over to the next batter,
[26:29] Speaker 1: whatever we had to do to get it to the
[26:31] Speaker 1: next batter.
[26:32] Speaker 4: That's what we were going to do. And then it
[26:33] Speaker 4: was a walk and a walk and a walk.
[26:35] Speaker 2: And then sure.
[26:36] Speaker 4: He does cheerio stuff.
[26:39] Speaker 2: It's awesome.
[26:39] Speaker 5: You know, and I think that was where you started
[26:41] Speaker 5: to see Miller wear down a little bit. He obviously
[26:43] Speaker 5: had to just wasn't as locked in command wise, losing
[26:47] Speaker 5: some of those sliders arm side. And I think that was,
[26:49] Speaker 5: You mentioned the at-bat, just drawing the walk, if you're
[26:52] Speaker 5: Gary Sanchez. It also gave Chorio a little bit of
[26:54] Speaker 5: an idea there of, hey, he might not have that slider.
[26:57] Speaker 5: Sure enough, in that at-bat, he ends up locating one beautifully.
[27:00] Speaker 5: I don't know how Chorio takes that. And that started
[27:03] Speaker 5: to open things up. When you can spoil 104 and
[27:05] Speaker 5: then also spit on that slider that starts at the
[27:08] Speaker 5: bottom rail and breaks below, that's where all of a
[27:11] Speaker 5: sudden it's like, okay, well, now how do I get
[27:12] Speaker 5: this guy out? If he's not chasing and he's still
[27:15] Speaker 5: able to cover V-Law at the bottom, I thought maybe
[27:18] Speaker 5: they tried to buzz one up top.
[27:19] Speaker 2: Maybe they did.
[27:19] Speaker 5: It just got too much middle, and that's what we
[27:21] Speaker 5: saw from Torrio there. I mean, that's the first time
[27:23] Speaker 5: Mason Miller threw 40 pitches all season. We've seen him
[27:25] Speaker 5: do the two-inning thing, but not 40 pitches. It's kind
[27:29] Speaker 5: of the theme of the postseason, right? You see a
[27:30] Speaker 5: lot of guys getting asked to maybe do things that
[27:32] Speaker 5: they haven't done a lot this year. And even McGill,
[27:36] Speaker 5: he was somewhat asked to go a little bit longer
[27:38] Speaker 5: in his outing than he.
[27:39] Speaker 2: Was used to.
[27:40] Speaker 5: That's my last question for you. Do you still see
[27:43] Speaker 5: that being a theme today? in this Brewers pitching staff.
[27:46] Speaker 5: I know they have so many different guys that they
[27:47] Speaker 5: maybe don't have to ask guys to do as much or, or,
[27:50] Speaker 5: or maybe exceed their comfort zone as much.
[27:52] Speaker 2: But we saw it with McGill that almost ended turbulent
[27:56] Speaker 2: in a turbulent manner.
[27:57] Speaker 5: Like, do you still see them trying to go more
[27:58] Speaker 5: than one inning with McGill to shut the door?
[28:01] Speaker 2: And I mean, we even saw a little bit of
[28:02] Speaker 2: a quicker yank with your eBay.
[28:03] Speaker 5: If he got into some trouble that of course, will
[28:06] Speaker 5: result in maybe you needing to stretch out your, your closer.
[28:09] Speaker 5: How do you see the bullpen rules going the rest
[28:11] Speaker 5: of the way with them in the driver's seat now too?
[28:13] Speaker 5: Cause like you mentioned, they could afford with Dustin may
[28:16] Speaker 5: maybe to give them a little bit longer of a
[28:17] Speaker 5: leash since it's not, you know, winner go home in
[28:20] Speaker 5: that game three.
[28:22] Speaker 4: Yeah, I think.
[28:23] Speaker 1: And for what it's worth, Murph said after the game
[28:26] Speaker 1: that McGill came up to him and said he could
[28:28] Speaker 1: pitch the tech. So he was ready to do it.
[28:30] Speaker 1: I mean, guys are always going to do that. And
[28:32] Speaker 1: McGill is such a dog that like, He'll throw his
[28:36] Speaker 1: arm out if you let him, it seems like. But
[28:38] Speaker 1: I think the interesting thing about this Brewers bullpen in
[28:42] Speaker 1: particular is that they don't really have a lot of
[28:45] Speaker 1: those outside of the high leverage guys like specialists. Like
[28:49] Speaker 1: they don't necessarily have like this guy is a lefty
[28:52] Speaker 1: specialist and this guy is only ever long relief. They've
[28:56] Speaker 1: had a lot of those bullpens in the past. Even
[28:59] Speaker 1: if you go back to Craig Council's teams where a
[29:01] Speaker 1: lot of guys were pigeonholed into roles.
[29:04] Speaker 4: And there's so many of.
[29:05] Speaker 1: These guys that they're comfortable bringing in in a number
[29:09] Speaker 1: of different roles.
[29:11] Speaker 4: D.L.
[29:11] Speaker 1: Hall used to really be a lefty, you know, specialist
[29:16] Speaker 1: type guy. And he comes in all the time, especially
[29:20] Speaker 1: in high leverage situations. And he's been one potentially the
[29:26] Speaker 1: most underrated reliever on that team with a sub three ERA.
[29:32] Speaker 1: I think they'll... They're not going to ask– Murphy even
[29:36] Speaker 1: said this today too. They're not going to ask guys
[29:37] Speaker 1: to do things they are uncomfortable with. but they will
[29:41] Speaker 1: do things differently than they did during the season. And
[29:44] Speaker 1: a little different than kind of what you think of
[29:48] Speaker 1: as classic bullpen roles to just.
[29:50] Speaker 4: Get the job done.
[29:51] Speaker 1: And when you factor in the extra days of rest
[29:54] Speaker 1: and things like that in the playoffs, it makes it
[29:56] Speaker 1: a little easier to do those things.
[29:58] Speaker 3: Well, Brewers are in the driver's seat and Matt is
[30:02] Speaker 3: the happiest man in America. Thank you so much, Matt,
[30:05] Speaker 3: for coming on. This was a blast going to be
[30:07] Speaker 3: a great series because you know, like we all agree,
[30:10] Speaker 3: this Padres team is not going to go down easy.
[30:12] Speaker 3: It's going to be a tough environment at Petco, but
[30:17] Speaker 3: we'll see what happens before you go, Matt, just tell
[30:19] Speaker 3: the people where they can find your work outside of
[30:22] Speaker 3: your awesome articles on just baseball.com. Yeah.
[30:25] Speaker 1: Um, So on Twitter, MKEMAT13, hang out there, talk a
[30:29] Speaker 1: lot of brewers and a lot of just general baseball
[30:32] Speaker 1: as well because of writing for the site. That's pretty
[30:38] Speaker 1: much where they find me right there. Radio every once
[30:42] Speaker 1: in a while up in Green Bay if you happen
[30:43] Speaker 1: to live up there, Mondays at 1220. But otherwise, just
[30:48] Speaker 1: doing it for just baseball, just keeping– to help the
[30:53] Speaker 1: site growing and we continue to do awesome things.
[30:55] Speaker 4: And I'm just happy to be a small part of it.
[30:57] Speaker 3: Hell yeah, my man.
[30:58] Speaker 2: Thank you.
[30:59] Speaker 3: Thank you so much, Matt. And a podcast P let's
[31:01] Speaker 3: take a quick break and then we'll talk Braves versus Dodgers.
[31:12] Speaker 3: I was wrong. The Braves did not get swept. They
[31:16] Speaker 3: went three to two. Did your Fuentes did your freaking did.
[31:21] Speaker 3: fuentes comes in shuts the door goes basically the rest
[31:27] Speaker 3: of the game until rosa iglesias comes in at the
[31:29] Speaker 3: end braves win three to two.
[31:32] Speaker 5: This was the one for me where it was like
[31:34] Speaker 5: if they lose this of course you're in trouble because
[31:38] Speaker 5: you're now down to zip but also it would really
[31:41] Speaker 5: have added fuel to the fire of the gary or
[31:44] Speaker 5: of the chris sale conversation of like Uh, was it
[31:47] Speaker 5: worth throwing him in relief?
[31:48] Speaker 2: You didn't have them now.
[31:49] Speaker 5: And, and this was a game that you really needed
[31:51] Speaker 5: to win because you're going to be down to zip,
[31:54] Speaker 5: et cetera, et cetera, to win this game. I mean, that,
[31:57] Speaker 5: that pours cold water on a lot of the Chris
[31:59] Speaker 5: sale narrative of whether it was worth it to use them.
[32:01] Speaker 2: And I was kind of prepared to have a larger
[32:03] Speaker 2: conversation about that.
[32:04] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[32:05] Speaker 5: I know they're both in with stacks in the wild
[32:07] Speaker 5: card and like, but it might be worth just throwing
[32:09] Speaker 5: somebody else because you set yourself up to have maybe
[32:11] Speaker 5: no chance in this Dodger series. It could have all
[32:14] Speaker 5: been positioned that way, but, the Braves pitching staff did
[32:18] Speaker 5: its thing, man. And Didier Fuentes was a big part
[32:20] Speaker 5: of that. But I mean, Ray Kerr is the opener again,
[32:22] Speaker 5: gives you two and two thirds, doesn't give up a run.
[32:25] Speaker 5: Holmes does give up the one run and two thirds
[32:26] Speaker 5: of an inning. They short leashed him, but then Lee
[32:29] Speaker 5: decent bounce back. Robert Suarez looked fantastic. And that was
[32:33] Speaker 5: part of the reason why I thought maybe they didn't
[32:35] Speaker 5: need to go to stay on the wild card, but
[32:37] Speaker 5: he was buzzing fastballs. And then they don't get, I
[32:39] Speaker 5: don't think to the promise end like this, if not
[32:41] Speaker 5: for three and two thirds from Didier Fuentes, which, I mean,
[32:46] Speaker 5: this guy's going to ultimately be a starter in Major
[32:47] Speaker 5: League Baseball. He's another extremely young player playing at a
[32:50] Speaker 5: really high level, and he fit into this team best
[32:52] Speaker 5: this year, and they've liked him best right now for
[32:56] Speaker 5: a team that's in win-now mode as a reliever, but
[32:57] Speaker 5: he has the ability to be stretched out. We've seen
[32:59] Speaker 5: him used in multi-inning roles all year long, but not
[33:02] Speaker 5: three and two-thirds, really, since he started a game really
[33:04] Speaker 5: early in the season and had one other piggyback. The
[33:08] Speaker 5: theme of the postseason is usually to get to the
[33:10] Speaker 5: promised land, you're going to have to ask guys to
[33:11] Speaker 5: do things that they haven't done much of or at
[33:13] Speaker 5: all this season. And if they can do that, that
[33:16] Speaker 5: can be a differentiator. That's exactly what happens here where
[33:18] Speaker 5: Fuentes gives you three and two-thirds. Also, extremely economical to
[33:22] Speaker 5: be able to do that, 47 pitches, which is part
[33:25] Speaker 5: of the reason why he was able to stretch out
[33:26] Speaker 5: that long. Only allows the one run, which is the
[33:29] Speaker 5: solo shot. Doesn't walk anybody, three Ks. And that really
[33:33] Speaker 5: bails out his manager-wise to have to deal with the
[33:35] Speaker 5: conversation around this. Sets up The Braves nicely now were
[33:39] Speaker 5: also Iglesias only through three pitches to shut the door.
[33:42] Speaker 5: And you've got Chris Sale now fresher and ready to
[33:45] Speaker 5: go for the next ball game. Tyler Malley has an
[33:48] Speaker 5: extra day to get ready as well. And now all
[33:50] Speaker 5: of a sudden, this Braves pitching staff in a series
[33:53] Speaker 5: that is even is set up now to hedge a
[33:56] Speaker 5: lot of that concern. They had to get through a
[33:58] Speaker 5: game where they were at a starting pitching disadvantage. Blake
[34:01] Speaker 5: Snell wasn't sharp. all the arms that the Braves called
[34:03] Speaker 5: on were. And all of a sudden now that starting
[34:06] Speaker 5: pitching advantage has swung a little bit out of the
[34:09] Speaker 5: way of the Dodgers who had such an edge. It
[34:11] Speaker 5: felt like, especially when you knew sale may not be
[34:13] Speaker 5: able to start two games.
[34:15] Speaker 3: I was watching Didier Fuentes touch 101 miles an hour
[34:20] Speaker 3: and dominated Dodgers lineup in LA. And I'm just thinking
[34:23] Speaker 3: to myself on Saturday that, georgia bulldog fans probably a
[34:29] Speaker 3: lot of them live in atlanta watch their 22 year
[34:32] Speaker 3: old quarterback and then on sunday they watch their 21
[34:38] Speaker 3: year old reliever like didier fuentes is younger than the
[34:42] Speaker 3: starting quarterback at the university of georgia He is the
[34:46] Speaker 3: same age as Julian Sayed, the junior quarterback at Ohio State.
[34:50] Speaker 5: Well, it doesn't mean as much in college football now.
[34:52] Speaker 5: I mean, some of these guys are like 25 years old.
[34:54] Speaker 3: But they're not. Gunnar Stockton is 22. Julian Sayed is 21.
[34:58] Speaker 3: These are normal college kids. Didier Fuentes could be in college.
[35:02] Speaker 3: But on top of that, I thought this was a brilliantly–
[35:06] Speaker 3: managed game by Walt Weiss because even when he was
[35:10] Speaker 3: getting interviewed in the dugout they're kind of asking you
[35:13] Speaker 3: know what's the plan with Ray Kerr and you could
[35:16] Speaker 3: tell that in his mind he's going batter to batter
[35:19] Speaker 3: he even came out and said that and then pulls
[35:21] Speaker 3: him at the right moment and then he goes to
[35:24] Speaker 3: Grant Holmes and Grant Holmes gives up the run couple
[35:28] Speaker 3: runners on immediately pulls him and again I have a
[35:31] Speaker 3: group chat with a good on Walt Weiss for pulling him.
[35:37] Speaker 3: We were going to crush him. And I agree. Like
[35:39] Speaker 3: that's when the game could have gotten out of hand.
[35:41] Speaker 3: Momentum could have fully switched, but then he goes to
[35:46] Speaker 3: Dylan Lee, one of his best lefty relievers. Dylan Lee
[35:49] Speaker 3: gets the job done. And then he goes to Robert
[35:51] Speaker 3: Suarez and then he goes to Fuentes and he could
[35:53] Speaker 3: have taken Fuentes out, but he saw that he had
[35:55] Speaker 3: the hot hand. And then as soon as he gave
[35:58] Speaker 3: up the run, what does he go to? Russell Iglesias
[36:00] Speaker 3: shut the door down. basically guarantee a win like that
[36:03] Speaker 3: was as perfectly managed of a bullpen game as you
[36:07] Speaker 3: can have by a manager so there were plenty of
[36:10] Speaker 3: stars for the Braves in game two but I thought
[36:13] Speaker 3: Walt Weiss might be at the top of the list.
[36:16] Speaker 5: Yeah and as podcast P mentioned in the private chat
[36:18] Speaker 5: like the in a bullpen game, the Braves end up
[36:21] Speaker 5: using less arms than the Dodgers. So they end up still,
[36:24] Speaker 5: you know, I got to get through it. And that's
[36:26] Speaker 5: largely the onus is on Blake Snell there. Of course,
[36:28] Speaker 5: you just didn't have it. You just, the feel wasn't there.
[36:31] Speaker 5: And he, in those five walks, but you know, for
[36:34] Speaker 5: the most part, the, the, the Dodgers bullpen did fine,
[36:38] Speaker 5: but you know, they've been went to a lot of
[36:39] Speaker 5: different arms and a couple of guys just didn't have it.
[36:41] Speaker 2: And Boobage was one of them.
[36:42] Speaker 5: And Enriquez just got, got beat a little bit on
[36:45] Speaker 5: a couple of good swings and big credits to Mike
[36:48] Speaker 5: Harris there who just had, a monster day. And that
[36:50] Speaker 5: insurance run ended up being massive. He felt like it
[36:52] Speaker 5: was going to be, and it was literally the difference there.
[36:56] Speaker 5: Harris just continues to swing a really hot bat. And
[36:58] Speaker 5: that's been big for them. I mean, Ronald Acuna had
[37:00] Speaker 5: a couple opportunities to extend the lead. Didn't still was
[37:03] Speaker 5: struggling a little bit and trying to find his footing.
[37:06] Speaker 5: And it really was, you know, Harris, when you look
[37:08] Speaker 5: across the board, right, nobody had a multi-hit game on,
[37:11] Speaker 5: on the brave side, pretty much.
[37:13] Speaker 2: Struggled to scratch across from both sides.
[37:15] Speaker 5: We only had 12 total hits in this ball game.
[37:17] Speaker 2: And, and Mike Harris had three of them. He was
[37:20] Speaker 2: up with a chance to hit a homer for the cycle.
[37:23] Speaker 5: This was a really fun ball game because it was
[37:25] Speaker 5: that classic chess match with the relief arms.
[37:28] Speaker 2: And I agree. I mean, Weiss really pressed all the
[37:30] Speaker 2: right buttons.
[37:31] Speaker 5: And Fuentes really, really bailed out the staff where they're
[37:36] Speaker 5: set up to be in the driver's seat, at least
[37:39] Speaker 5: relative to where they would have been. Of course, the
[37:40] Speaker 5: Dodgers are going to be able to match you in
[37:42] Speaker 5: a lot of different ways on the starting pitching side.
[37:44] Speaker 5: And they're always going to have the advantage, I would say.
[37:46] Speaker 5: So it's more the Braves matching them. But they're set
[37:48] Speaker 5: up now to be able to do that. with a
[37:50] Speaker 5: fresher sale and a fresher Malley. And, and that with
[37:53] Speaker 5: the way that these pen arms are throwing and you'll
[37:55] Speaker 5: have a very fresh Iglesias, like even without Flint as
[37:59] Speaker 5: likely available in game six, you're going to have Suarez.
[38:02] Speaker 2: You're going to have a lot of your other guys
[38:04] Speaker 2: good to go.
[38:05] Speaker 5: And I think that's putting the Braves in a chance
[38:08] Speaker 5: in a spot here where they've got a legit chance here,
[38:10] Speaker 5: you know, to pull off the upset.
[38:12] Speaker 2: And it's silly.
[38:12] Speaker 5: It feels weird saying that 94 when teams pulling off
[38:15] Speaker 5: the upset, but at the end of the day, these
[38:16] Speaker 5: Dodgers were favorites for a reason. and set up with
[38:20] Speaker 5: the way that they could position their staff to where
[38:24] Speaker 5: it felt like the Braves were at that disadvantage and
[38:27] Speaker 5: doesn't feel like it as much anymore.
[38:29] Speaker 3: Yeah, from this comment from our YouTube live chat. First
[38:31] Speaker 3: of all, thank you everybody joining us here live on YouTube.
[38:34] Speaker 3: I know it's really late at night for us. I
[38:36] Speaker 3: know it's really late at night for you. Again, thank
[38:38] Speaker 3: you for joining. Best way to support, liking, subscribing, and commenting.
[38:41] Speaker 3: From Hayden Harris 6, all we ever needed was a split.
[38:44] Speaker 3: I like our chances. I get what you mean. Now
[38:47] Speaker 3: you got Chris Sale at home, followed by Tyler Malley,
[38:50] Speaker 3: and both of them have just been phenomenal for you guys.
[38:53] Speaker 3: You know that your bullpen can do a job if
[38:56] Speaker 3: the bats get going because... Arum, the Braves bats have
[38:59] Speaker 3: not gotten going.
[39:00] Speaker 2: They haven't.
[39:01] Speaker 3: The three guys at the top of the lineup, Baldwin, Acuna,
[39:04] Speaker 3: and Olsen, they're all hitting below 200. This is money
[39:08] Speaker 3: Mike Harris's offense. And then the bullpen is just doing
[39:12] Speaker 3: a job. So could those three at the top of
[39:15] Speaker 3: the lineup get going? When they're in Atlanta against the Dodgers,
[39:19] Speaker 3: then that lineup gets a whole lot scarier. And if
[39:22] Speaker 3: that happens, I'm really looking at the Dodgers. They have
[39:25] Speaker 3: to be more aggressive. When I was watching that game
[39:27] Speaker 3: and there was runners on first and second. it was
[39:30] Speaker 3: Mookie Betts was up and Shohei Ohtani was on or
[39:34] Speaker 3: Mookie was on second. Shohei Ohtani was on first and
[39:37] Speaker 3: Will Smith was up to plate against Robert Suarez. And
[39:39] Speaker 3: John Smoltz was saying on the broadcast that Mookie is
[39:42] Speaker 3: getting an enormous lead and Robert Suarez isn't even paying
[39:46] Speaker 3: attention to him. Mookie doesn't. you could steal third, get
[39:50] Speaker 3: over to third base or Shohei to second, and then
[39:52] Speaker 3: a fly ball would score you. But it felt like
[39:54] Speaker 3: Mookie was just kind of sitting there and saying, I
[39:58] Speaker 3: don't want to make the mistake here. I'm just going
[40:00] Speaker 3: to let the Will Smiths, the Freddie Freemans, or the
[40:03] Speaker 3: Teosca Hernandez hit me in. But with how excellent this
[40:09] Speaker 3: Braves pitching staff is, it's much easier said than done.
[40:12] Speaker 3: Now I know they did it in game one and
[40:14] Speaker 3: they'll probably find a way to do it in game three.
[40:17] Speaker 3: They're amazing. I have three units on them to win
[40:19] Speaker 3: the world series of the best team I've ever seen.
[40:21] Speaker 3: But with that said, just waiting for the big hit
[40:25] Speaker 3: against the Braves, it's not always going to come. And
[40:28] Speaker 3: that's what I felt like bit the Dodgers in the
[40:30] Speaker 3: ass in this game was it just felt like they
[40:32] Speaker 3: were waiting for someone else to hit the Homer. And
[40:36] Speaker 3: then it didn't happen. It's like, Oh shit, we lost.
[40:39] Speaker 3: Now we're going to game three against sale.
[40:41] Speaker 1: Oh, no.
[40:42] Speaker 3: I mean, they didn't hit Dylan Dodd. They didn't hit
[40:44] Speaker 3: Ray Kerr. What makes you think they're going to hit
[40:46] Speaker 3: Chris Sale in Atlanta? Those were my thoughts where I'm like,
[40:51] Speaker 3: the Dodgers, not that they slept walk because you got
[40:55] Speaker 3: to give a lot of credit to the Braves pitching,
[40:57] Speaker 3: but it did feel like a very unaggressive Dodger team
[41:01] Speaker 3: waiting for the big hit. Did you feel that same way?
[41:04] Speaker 3: Or am I kind of overthinking this?
[41:06] Speaker 5: No, I think that's a bag that in the world
[41:07] Speaker 5: series or in the CS down, or even in this series,
[41:11] Speaker 5: if they're down there, there's more urgency on.
[41:14] Speaker 2: Mookie to take that chance and grab that bag.
[41:17] Speaker 5: But I think the way they were probably feeling is, Hey,
[41:19] Speaker 5: we're up one in the series.
[41:21] Speaker 2: We've got traffic on base. We've got the middle of
[41:22] Speaker 2: the order.
[41:23] Speaker 5: I'm not going to risk taking the bat out of,
[41:25] Speaker 5: you know, Will Smith and Freddie Freeman's hands here with,
[41:28] Speaker 5: you know, with an opportunity.
[41:29] Speaker 2: To drive and runs and, I get it, but I
[41:32] Speaker 2: agree with you.
[41:32] Speaker 5: As the stakes get a little bit higher, you've got
[41:34] Speaker 5: to start to take those calculated risks, and I think
[41:37] Speaker 5: that's a bag that Mookie probably takes a.
[41:39] Speaker 2: Little bit later.
[41:40] Speaker 5: It's also weird that it wasn't something he's done much
[41:42] Speaker 5: of this season period. I mean, he had two bags
[41:44] Speaker 5: all year, right? So that's something that just seems like
[41:47] Speaker 5: it hasn't been there for him. I do think as
[41:49] Speaker 5: we get later into the series and as the Braves
[41:51] Speaker 5: press them a little bit more, there could be some
[41:53] Speaker 5: more urgency. I think against a Chris Sale, you'll probably
[41:56] Speaker 5: see more urgency to try to create runs and make
[41:58] Speaker 5: that happen. I am looking at this lineup, too. And
[42:01] Speaker 5: I mean, like they're they're so good. The Braves and
[42:04] Speaker 5: the Dodgers in terms of the talent. But Otani like
[42:07] Speaker 5: still looks like he's working through it, you know, and
[42:09] Speaker 5: some of these at bats don't look entirely comfortable. He
[42:11] Speaker 5: could snap out of it in a matter of a day.
[42:14] Speaker 5: You never know when he's going to snap back into it.
[42:16] Speaker 5: But right now he doesn't look the most comfortable. I
[42:18] Speaker 5: know that a lot are expecting Will Smith to get going,
[42:21] Speaker 5: but he still needs to get going. And Freddie's at-bats
[42:24] Speaker 5: look great today, and I think he's kind of already
[42:26] Speaker 5: back into his postseason mode, and we saw the homer.
[42:28] Speaker 5: But I am really looking at Shohei, and I'm just
[42:31] Speaker 5: wondering what version they're going to get of him.
[42:33] Speaker 2: And you never know. He could just take a few
[42:35] Speaker 2: more at-bats, and he picks it up.
[42:37] Speaker 5: But he's also dealt with a laundry list of injuries
[42:41] Speaker 5: that you imagine could just still be affecting him a
[42:43] Speaker 5: little bit in these games.
[42:44] Speaker 3: Podcast P, what's up?
[42:47] Speaker 6: First, I wanted to piggyback off the Otani point. It
[42:50] Speaker 6: kind of seems like he's been a slower postseason starter
[42:54] Speaker 6: in recent years. He was kind of miserable in the
[42:56] Speaker 6: DS last year, and he now has the best DS
[42:59] Speaker 6: in 24, and he kind of turns it on later.
[43:01] Speaker 6: So maybe we're going to see that again, but that's
[43:04] Speaker 6: not what I wanted to bring up. What I wanted
[43:05] Speaker 6: to bring up is how catastrophic, which might be a
[43:10] Speaker 6: dramatic word, how catastrophic the Blake Snell start was because...
[43:15] Speaker 6: They chose to go Blake Snell game two over Yamamoto, which,
[43:20] Speaker 6: and I understand, it's a two-time Cy Young winner, and
[43:23] Speaker 6: it's Yoshinobu Yamamoto. I know Yamamoto's better, but it's a
[43:26] Speaker 6: two-time Cy Young winner. It creates a scenario where Snell
[43:31] Speaker 6: not only has a bad start, he can't even record
[43:35] Speaker 6: 12 outs. They have to use six bullpen arms. The
[43:39] Speaker 6: Braves get to see six bullpen arms.
[43:43] Speaker 2: Just get visual.
[43:44] Speaker 6: Like that's, we know how important that is throughout a series.
[43:47] Speaker 3: Yep.
[43:48] Speaker 6: But here's the thing that makes it worse. Now let's
[43:51] Speaker 6: say the Braves win game three. Yamamoto, that game's on
[43:58] Speaker 6: October 6th game. A hypothetical game five would be on
[44:01] Speaker 6: the ninth. If Yamamoto went today and the Dodgers lost,
[44:04] Speaker 6: he'd be able to go in game five on like
[44:06] Speaker 6: normal rest. If Yamamoto, If they lose game three, Yamamoto
[44:11] Speaker 6: would have to be on short rest. You have to
[44:13] Speaker 6: go back to Snell. Obviously, Snell can easily shove. It's
[44:15] Speaker 6: Blake Snell. But my point is, like, contrast the two things.
[44:20] Speaker 6: Blake Snell's catastrophic outing and Didier Fuentes' series-altering outing. If
[44:27] Speaker 6: the Braves are going to make a run, it's going
[44:29] Speaker 6: to be through these weird ballpen games. I know Tyler
[44:31] Speaker 6: Malley is like, you know, has been awesome for them,
[44:34] Speaker 6: but he's been dealing with a little.
[44:36] Speaker 2: Bit of a health issue.
[44:36] Speaker 6: And at the end of the day, Tyler Malley, I
[44:40] Speaker 6: might fully bought it. You know, if Chris sell, I'm
[44:44] Speaker 6: bought it.
[44:45] Speaker 3: Chris, obviously it's Chris. No, I get it. Like when
[44:47] Speaker 3: the going gets tough and it's, it's Tyler Malley against
[44:51] Speaker 3: Tarek Scooble. And you're like, well, like I like Tyler Malley,
[44:55] Speaker 3: but there are levels to this, I guess, not a
[44:58] Speaker 3: rebuttal more of a question that I have for the
[45:01] Speaker 3: both of you. Do you think that it's, well, we
[45:05] Speaker 3: know it's Yamamoto game three. I assume it's Glassnow game
[45:10] Speaker 3: four and then Scooble game five. I don't think we'll
[45:13] Speaker 3: see Snell again.
[45:15] Speaker 6: Yeah, probably Glassnow.
[45:18] Speaker 3: Do you think that's what happens, Arm? Do you think
[45:20] Speaker 3: it's Glassnow game four? I would say Scooble game four.
[45:23] Speaker 6: I think it would be Scooble game four.
[45:25] Speaker 2: That would be regular Arast on game four, right? I
[45:28] Speaker 2: think so.
[45:28] Speaker 6: No, it would be a bit early. It would be
[45:30] Speaker 6: a bit early, I think.
[45:31] Speaker 2: So, so that might be the way they set it
[45:33] Speaker 2: up then. And they're still in a pretty good spot,
[45:36] Speaker 2: but I agree.
[45:36] Speaker 5: It would be nice to have the option to be
[45:39] Speaker 5: able to go to the guy that's in Yamamoto, like
[45:41] Speaker 5: twice in this one, because the floor is so much
[45:44] Speaker 5: higher on a Yamamoto start and the ceiling, like they're both.
[45:47] Speaker 2: Exorbitantly high for Snell or Yamamoto.
[45:50] Speaker 5: You're absolutely dialed in. So I do think it's a,
[45:52] Speaker 5: it's a really fascinating aspect to unpack. And at the
[45:55] Speaker 5: end of the day, you just, you never know. I
[45:58] Speaker 5: know Snell too, like, you set it up because you
[46:01] Speaker 5: love the matchup with, with the way that the Braves
[46:04] Speaker 5: have struggled against lefties. The difference in this game, the
[46:06] Speaker 5: last thing I'll really say about it is that here,
[46:08] Speaker 5: Flint has got recorded the same amount of outs as
[46:11] Speaker 5: Blake Snell and half the pitches.
[46:14] Speaker 2: That's, that's how you set yourself up here. And it's
[46:18] Speaker 2: not even a gamble.
[46:19] Speaker 5: Like I can fully understand why they went to Snell
[46:21] Speaker 5: in this one, but there is, you know, a domino
[46:25] Speaker 5: effect as Peyton alluded to. I can't wait to see
[46:27] Speaker 5: how Roberts kind of works with the staff now, the
[46:29] Speaker 5: rest of the way, because it's, It's still fortunate for
[46:31] Speaker 5: him where he's got endless options still.
[46:34] Speaker 6: On the bright side for L.A., though, Edwin Diaz looked fantastic.
[46:38] Speaker 2: He looked great.
[46:39] Speaker 3: Yep.
[46:41] Speaker 6: You know, Sasaki had some traffic, but, you know, his
[46:44] Speaker 6: second inning of work, he was pumping 102 at times.
[46:47] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[46:48] Speaker 6: So it's not all doom and gloom, but I do think–
[46:51] Speaker 6: I wouldn't say they got cute with going Blake Snell
[46:53] Speaker 6: game two. Again, it's Blake Snell. But the decision definitely
[46:59] Speaker 6: looks weird in hindsight. when you could have just gotten
[47:02] Speaker 6: Yamamoto had a huge pitching advantage and then feel way
[47:06] Speaker 6: better about the rest of the series.
[47:08] Speaker 3: A hundred percent. Cause you could still like go Blake
[47:10] Speaker 3: Snell against Chris sale and still feel relatively good about it.
[47:13] Speaker 3: But if you go Yamamoto game two, and again, I
[47:16] Speaker 3: wonder if like the lack of urgency where you're already planning,
[47:20] Speaker 3: where we want Yamamoto for game one against the brewers
[47:23] Speaker 3: or the Padres or whoever we face, that's, that's my
[47:26] Speaker 3: biggest takeaway from this game is I just feel a
[47:29] Speaker 3: lack of urgency from the Dodgers and we'll see, right.
[47:34] Speaker 3: We'll see if it doesn't matter to them at all.
[47:35] Speaker 3: And then they win game three and game four to Atlanta.
[47:38] Speaker 3: And we're like, Oh yeah, that did that conversation didn't matter.
[47:41] Speaker 3: But I wonder if all these little things start to
[47:43] Speaker 3: stack up like a urgency on the bases, the pitching
[47:46] Speaker 3: decisions we'll see might not amount to anything, or it
[47:50] Speaker 3: might amount to the Braves winning this series, but we're
[47:53] Speaker 3: going to talk about all of our game three, nlds
[47:56] Speaker 3: thoughts um on tomorrow's show after we recap um now
[48:01] Speaker 3: i think it's time to talk about our game two
[48:04] Speaker 3: picks unless arm did you have anything else to say
[48:06] Speaker 3: on this.
[48:07] Speaker 5: I just had one really quick thought the one thing
[48:09] Speaker 5: that does make it easy to go snell here is
[48:11] Speaker 5: since he returned from from injury he he made eight
[48:14] Speaker 5: star or eight appearances pitched to a 1.13 era in
[48:18] Speaker 5: 39 and two-thirds ending struck out 50 walks 14 so
[48:21] Speaker 5: i i could give that guy the ball not not
[48:24] Speaker 5: lose sleep as well Yeah.
[48:26] Speaker 3: They're just so good that we're kind of like poking
[48:29] Speaker 3: at things that we're like, should they have started the
[48:31] Speaker 3: two-time signing award winner who, when he's on, is as
[48:35] Speaker 3: good as anybody on the planet? No, I get it.
[48:38] Speaker 3: That's all we're trying to do. We're just trying to poke,
[48:39] Speaker 3: find little things. But Podcast P, we're going to talk
[48:42] Speaker 3: about our ALDS game two picks, but we'll take our
[48:46] Speaker 3: last break first. Game two. between the white socks and
[48:56] Speaker 3: the guardians. It's the first game up right now. We're
[49:00] Speaker 3: looking at a pitching matchup of Anthony K taking the
[49:03] Speaker 3: ball as the opener for the white socks against Gavin
[49:08] Speaker 3: Williams at home. And when you look at both pitchers
[49:13] Speaker 3: numbers against the opposing lineup, Anthony K has actually performed
[49:17] Speaker 3: against Cleveland, Cleveland hitters, over 70, 71 plate appearances. And
[49:21] Speaker 3: we're talking about the current Cleveland's roster hitting just a
[49:24] Speaker 3: buck 90. Well, then on the White Sox side against
[49:28] Speaker 3: Gavin Williams, over 112 plate appearances, 30% K rate, opponent
[49:32] Speaker 3: batting average of 214. Should be a good little pitcher's
[49:36] Speaker 3: duel early. And then I assume we're going to see
[49:38] Speaker 3: more White Sox bullpen chaos. We still should get a
[49:42] Speaker 3: good start from Cleveland. But after seeing what the White
[49:46] Speaker 3: Sox did offensively in game one arm and how good
[49:50] Speaker 3: Hagan Smith looked, and again, that bullpen continues to answer
[49:53] Speaker 3: the call. What do you think about the white socks?
[49:57] Speaker 3: A little bit of an upset here over Cleveland.
[50:00] Speaker 5: Nothing would surprise me with this white socks team anymore.
[50:03] Speaker 5: That's all I can say there. I mean, I, I
[50:06] Speaker 5: still like, especially in this spot, you'd think, okay, well,
[50:09] Speaker 5: Gavin Williams like has an opportunity, especially when he's got
[50:13] Speaker 5: the adrenaline pumping, like he throws fuel.
[50:15] Speaker 2: He could just overpower these hitters.
[50:17] Speaker 5: But at the same time, like they mess up, didn't
[50:20] Speaker 5: look particularly sharp and they got the big swing off,
[50:23] Speaker 5: but they also just wore them down.
[50:25] Speaker 2: And, I just don't really know what to make of it.
[50:27] Speaker 5: You look at the numbers this year for Gavin Williams
[50:29] Speaker 5: against White Sox.
[50:30] Speaker 3: Good.
[50:31] Speaker 2: Not great.
[50:31] Speaker 5: You know, 40 RA three, nine, eight to be exact,
[50:33] Speaker 5: 28 strikeouts and 21 and the thirds innings.
[50:36] Speaker 2: You walked eight.
[50:38] Speaker 5: Doesn't really sway you one way or the other. The
[50:41] Speaker 5: only thing is I just think about it back to
[50:43] Speaker 5: back games here where you, you, you call it a
[50:47] Speaker 5: bullpen game, but Grant Taylor pitched half the game in
[50:51] Speaker 5: game one. So, there's still several arms that they either
[50:54] Speaker 5: barely saw or, you know, that you can go to
[50:56] Speaker 5: that are going to be fresh and ready to go.
[50:59] Speaker 2: I mean, the way Grant Taylor has been used.
[51:01] Speaker 3: Oh my gosh.
[51:01] Speaker 2: I mean, they have a decision to make the next season.
[51:05] Speaker 5: They want to just go rolling back out into the
[51:06] Speaker 5: starting rotation because the guy basically gave you the, one
[51:09] Speaker 5: of the most economical, you know, four innings is you're
[51:11] Speaker 5: going to see you want 42 pitches. He threw four
[51:14] Speaker 5: innings in game one and took it all the way
[51:16] Speaker 5: to the finish line and shut the door. It's just
[51:18] Speaker 5: ridiculous stuff. So, I mean, they've got a lot of
[51:21] Speaker 5: different arms at their disposal because of that. It's not
[51:22] Speaker 5: your traditional bullpen game. And another instance here where Messick
[51:27] Speaker 5: versus the quote unquote opener, the guardians are the ones
[51:30] Speaker 5: that end up going to more relievers in that game one. So,
[51:34] Speaker 5: I mean, I could see it go any which way.
[51:37] Speaker 5: I do think these guardians bats will wake up a
[51:39] Speaker 5: little bit from that. From that game one, I think
[51:42] Speaker 5: Grant Taylor was just better than everybody else. I just
[51:45] Speaker 5: think he was as good as he's ever been. And
[51:48] Speaker 5: we saw that. But I think this is going to
[51:50] Speaker 5: be a close one. I don't have a strong opinion
[51:52] Speaker 5: one way or the other, other than I'll pick the
[51:56] Speaker 5: Guardians to grind it out and get one back. But
[51:59] Speaker 5: I'm thinking the White Sox are going to win this
[52:01] Speaker 5: series with the way that it's been feeling. But I
[52:04] Speaker 5: think this is the one the Guardians have to get.
[52:06] Speaker 2: And they're going to pull out all the stops to
[52:08] Speaker 2: be able to try to do that.
[52:10] Speaker 3: Now, I picked the White Sox to win this series,
[52:11] Speaker 3: but I think the Guardians win game two. You got
[52:13] Speaker 3: Gavin Williams at home. And like you said, there's likely
[52:16] Speaker 3: going to be no Grant Taylor because Grant Taylor went
[52:19] Speaker 3: 54 pitches on Tuesday and then didn't pitch for three
[52:22] Speaker 3: straight days and then went 42. Now he has one
[52:24] Speaker 3: off day. You don't expect him to come back. So
[52:27] Speaker 3: it's going to be a combination of Anthony K, Jordan Hicks,
[52:29] Speaker 3: who I do love. But, you know.
[52:33] Speaker 2: Look out for Feddie, though. Look out for Feddie.
[52:36] Speaker 3: You could do Brian Hudson, Sean Newcomb, Oscar Brazo bond.
[52:40] Speaker 3: So without Grant Taylor, you do feel like behind Gavin Williams,
[52:46] Speaker 3: the Guardians are going to figure it out offensively. Like
[52:48] Speaker 3: this could be a game where Gavin Williams has one
[52:51] Speaker 3: of his vintage six innings. four hits, one run, 10
[52:55] Speaker 3: punchies type of game. And now everybody in the Guardians
[52:58] Speaker 3: bullpen is rested and they still have a phenomenal bullpen
[53:00] Speaker 3: as well. So this has five games kind of written
[53:04] Speaker 3: all over it where, you know, the White Sox win
[53:06] Speaker 3: the first, then the Guardians, then they go back to Chicago,
[53:09] Speaker 3: White Sox win, then the Guardians pull one out. And
[53:12] Speaker 3: then the last game is at Cleveland. Like that's how
[53:14] Speaker 3: I always kind of thought that this series was going
[53:16] Speaker 3: to go. It was going to be a back and
[53:17] Speaker 3: forth fight. Would I be surprised if the White Sox won? No,
[53:20] Speaker 3: because the bats have just been so good and sometimes
[53:25] Speaker 3: no matter how good the pitching is you run into
[53:28] Speaker 3: an offense that's hot forget it doesn't really matter who
[53:31] Speaker 3: you throw in front of them especially arms in your
[53:34] Speaker 3: own division who you've seen plenty of time and you
[53:36] Speaker 3: have the confidence that you've already hit gavin williams yes
[53:40] Speaker 3: he's a big presence on the mound and he throws
[53:43] Speaker 3: fuel but you know you can hit him so you're
[53:46] Speaker 3: not going to be intimidated going into that matchup so
[53:49] Speaker 3: white socks could easily win but I think we're both
[53:52] Speaker 3: still just going to pick the Guardians here, but we
[53:56] Speaker 3: don't feel good about it.
[53:58] Speaker 2: No, not necessarily.
[53:59] Speaker 5: I think no Grant Taylor being available is going to
[54:01] Speaker 5: be important in this.
[54:02] Speaker 2: And you mentioned Gavin Williams at home.
[54:04] Speaker 5: He had some pretty dramatic home road splits this year,
[54:07] Speaker 5: 284 at home, 505 on the road.
[54:10] Speaker 2: So this is where.
[54:11] Speaker 3: You want them.
[54:12] Speaker 5: And in this spot, sneaky thing with the White Sox,
[54:15] Speaker 5: neither of their deadline acquisition pitchers are actually on the
[54:17] Speaker 5: division series roster.
[54:18] Speaker 2: No Luis Castillo and Brazabon was swapped out for.
[54:21] Speaker 5: Tyler davis so tyler davis would be the name that
[54:25] Speaker 5: they could potentially go to as well who was not
[54:27] Speaker 5: particularly sharp this year so shows you how they felt
[54:30] Speaker 5: i guess about brazaban after his struggles down the stretch
[54:33] Speaker 5: and into the early going in the postseason here but
[54:35] Speaker 5: that's part of it is like if they are in
[54:37] Speaker 5: the driver's seat and they don't get like the fact
[54:39] Speaker 5: that it's a bullpen game and you don't have grant
[54:42] Speaker 5: taylor i think if they fall behind a little bit
[54:46] Speaker 5: i could just see them going bulk and and and
[54:49] Speaker 5: just just getting through this one and saying we split
[54:51] Speaker 5: here and we're going back home and we're in a
[54:53] Speaker 5: good spot. Whereas for the guardians, it's like, we have
[54:56] Speaker 5: to get this one. So I go guards in this one.
[54:59] Speaker 5: Gavin gives them a pretty good start. And again, it's
[55:01] Speaker 5: going to be all hands on deck with that bullpen.
[55:03] Speaker 3: Do you think GM Chris gets was playing mind games
[55:06] Speaker 3: where he intentionally had a bad deadline because he wanted
[55:10] Speaker 3: the players on the team to be like, all right,
[55:13] Speaker 3: if they're not going to help us out, like it's
[55:15] Speaker 3: gotta be us and give them that type of confidence.
[55:17] Speaker 3: Do you think Do you think that's what he was doing?
[55:20] Speaker 3: Like secret mind games?
[55:21] Speaker 2: Because I mean, Doyle, Brent Doyle has been okay. Um,
[55:27] Speaker 2: he can carry the deadline acquisition.
[55:29] Speaker 5: They technically got Tommy fam as a pickup and he
[55:31] Speaker 5: might end up being one.
[55:32] Speaker 2: It is it. He bought with caution, man.
[55:35] Speaker 5: But again, I did at least leave the, uh, the
[55:39] Speaker 5: guys looking at each other and saying, well, it's gotta
[55:40] Speaker 5: be us. And it has been the same guys for
[55:42] Speaker 5: the most part all year, uh, that have been producing
[55:44] Speaker 5: for him. But, uh, Yeah, neither pitcher from the deadline
[55:48] Speaker 5: being on the DS roster is kind of crazy and
[55:50] Speaker 5: doesn't seem to be an issue for him so far.
[55:53] Speaker 3: Doesn't seem to be an issue. White Sox Guardians tomorrow
[55:56] Speaker 3: and followed, or the next game up, Yankees versus Rays.
[56:01] Speaker 3: So as we know, people were tagging me on Twitter
[56:04] Speaker 3: and saying I was ducking the episode. I wasn't ducking
[56:09] Speaker 3: the episode. um this is how we schedule it out
[56:13] Speaker 3: i just so happened to not be scheduled on the
[56:15] Speaker 3: day the yankees lose it was lucky it was lucky
[56:17] Speaker 3: by me i wasn't ducking anything but yeah they almost
[56:20] Speaker 3: get no hit um austin wells gets the uh double
[56:24] Speaker 3: down the line then he gets thrown a third and
[56:28] Speaker 3: i even text you i was like there's a part
[56:30] Speaker 3: of me that's almost glad that drew rasmussen uh dominated
[56:34] Speaker 3: us because how many times on this podcast arm did
[56:36] Speaker 3: i say drew rasmussen owns us i think 12 Yeah,
[56:39] Speaker 3: he owns you. Every single day of the podcast. He
[56:42] Speaker 3: certainly does. Postseason starts of eight-plus innings, at most one
[56:46] Speaker 3: hit and ten strikeouts. You got Drew Rasmussen again on
[56:52] Speaker 3: October 3rd. You got Blake Snell against the Brewers back
[56:56] Speaker 3: in 2025. You got Roger Clemens back in 2000 as
[57:00] Speaker 3: a Yankee against the Mariners. And you got Mike Mussina
[57:03] Speaker 3: back in 1997. So one of the better postseason starts
[57:07] Speaker 3: of all time.
[57:08] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[57:09] Speaker 3: And now the Yankees have Freddie Peralta in front of them.
[57:14] Speaker 3: We'll see. The Yankees numbers do look good against Freddie
[57:17] Speaker 3: Peralta when you look at, you know, kind of the
[57:19] Speaker 3: current rosters. But, you know, I guess, you know, I
[57:22] Speaker 3: was listening to those. I can kind of throw them
[57:23] Speaker 3: out the window. This will be on Cam Schlittler. Can
[57:26] Speaker 3: Cam Schlittler deliver? And the last time Schlittler pitched in
[57:30] Speaker 3: the trop, like a full start, five innings, seven hits,
[57:33] Speaker 3: three earned. One of his worst starts of the season.
[57:36] Speaker 3: The Rays are not afraid of him. This is not
[57:38] Speaker 3: the Red Sox lineup. Can't say I feel good going
[57:42] Speaker 3: into the game arm, but we're going to win. I
[57:44] Speaker 3: can't say that I feel good about it. What's your
[57:46] Speaker 3: read on this game?
[57:48] Speaker 5: And I look at Freddie Peralta and say, what version
[57:50] Speaker 5: are you getting a Freddie? Because Freddie was so fricking
[57:53] Speaker 5: good down the stretch. They've clearly things have clicked for
[57:55] Speaker 5: him in Tampa. That's been the storyline, but can it
[57:58] Speaker 5: translate into the post season? You look at Freddie's last
[58:01] Speaker 5: six starts of the year, 34 innings where, He allowed
[58:04] Speaker 5: just 18 hits and three earned runs.
[58:06] Speaker 2: Only one homer allowed.
[58:08] Speaker 5: And it was six innings, six innings, six innings, five,
[58:11] Speaker 5: five and two thirds and five and a third.
[58:12] Speaker 2: It'll be a shorter leash, but if he can give
[58:14] Speaker 2: you a five.
[58:15] Speaker 5: Maybe a little bit more than that of shut out
[58:18] Speaker 5: one run ball, which is literally what he has done
[58:20] Speaker 5: is lost six starts. That's going to set the raise
[58:24] Speaker 5: up pretty nicely to have a chance here.
[58:27] Speaker 2: I agree though.
[58:27] Speaker 5: It's just like if cam Schlitler does that thing where he, he,
[58:30] Speaker 5: he's a Cy Young winner and is unhittable or you
[58:34] Speaker 5: can't push a run across for, for seven plus, like
[58:37] Speaker 5: that's where you just hand it right off to, to,
[58:39] Speaker 5: to the big dogs at the back end of the pen.
[58:40] Speaker 5: But if you can get them out in the fifth
[58:43] Speaker 5: or sixth, then it's a whole nother story because Peralta
[58:46] Speaker 5: gives you five solid, it's the bullpen battle. And then
[58:48] Speaker 5: it's right up in the air and you kind of
[58:50] Speaker 5: erased that advantage of having the Cy Young winner on
[58:53] Speaker 5: the Yankee side, towing the rubber. So it's, I am
[58:56] Speaker 5: interested to see how he bounces back, if at all,
[58:58] Speaker 5: after that being one of the few places and instances
[59:01] Speaker 5: he struggled all year. I do think that these are
[59:05] Speaker 5: some of the bats that they can really handle velocity,
[59:07] Speaker 5: the Rays, and when you have... a ton of VLO
[59:11] Speaker 5: and different versions of VLO coming at you, this is
[59:14] Speaker 5: a team that is equipped to be able to handle it. And,
[59:17] Speaker 5: and I think short or knows that we might see
[59:19] Speaker 5: a lot of the curve balls again, like we saw
[59:20] Speaker 5: against Boston kind of throw off the tempo, but it's
[59:23] Speaker 5: going to be fun to watch. I'm really excited for it.
[59:25] Speaker 5: I think both starters are going to be sharp. And
[59:27] Speaker 5: I think, I think they're going to get a pretty
[59:29] Speaker 5: good one from Freddie as well. And then it's going
[59:31] Speaker 5: to come down to, you know, if it, which bullpens
[59:34] Speaker 5: can kind of take it across the finish line. But
[59:35] Speaker 5: this is another classic one where I feel like who's
[59:38] Speaker 5: going to have that big swing, a couple of guys
[59:40] Speaker 5: on base in the rare opportunity where you get some
[59:42] Speaker 5: traffic against Schuettler.
[59:44] Speaker 2: Can you get that big swing? That's where it's going
[59:46] Speaker 2: to be fun to see, because I do think this
[59:48] Speaker 2: is going to be another tight, low scoring ball game
[59:50] Speaker 2: almost all the way through. Yeah.
[59:51] Speaker 3: I'm with you. My one worry is a guy like
[59:55] Speaker 3: cam schlittler who relies not relies but it fuels him
[59:59] Speaker 3: the bulletin board material he got plenty from the red
[1:00:02] Speaker 3: socks i'd like to ask some of our fans of
[1:00:06] Speaker 3: the show who are raised fans can you start talking
[1:00:09] Speaker 3: shit to him online make it known like we need
[1:00:12] Speaker 3: bulletin board material they're being too nice arm they're being
[1:00:15] Speaker 3: too nice like you know what they did in response
[1:00:18] Speaker 3: to that the trop was going to be a home game.
[1:00:22] Speaker 3: They just showed up and rooted for their team. What
[1:00:25] Speaker 3: a bunch of bullshit.
[1:00:26] Speaker 2: Just proved them wrong.
[1:00:27] Speaker 3: Like we need it, but instead they were just cheering
[1:00:31] Speaker 3: like good fans. What the hell is that?
[1:00:32] Speaker 2: Yeah. It was, by the way, it was awesome. I'm
[1:00:34] Speaker 2: going to be there tomorrow. I'm excited.
[1:00:36] Speaker 3: Oh, you're going to be there.
[1:00:37] Speaker 2: Yeah. I'm going to be there.
[1:00:39] Speaker 5: I'm excited to see it. I'm excited to see the
[1:00:40] Speaker 5: trop rocking like that.
[1:00:41] Speaker 3: Please wear a race, wear a race hat. Just yell,
[1:00:46] Speaker 3: yell at him. We need it. We need it. We're
[1:00:48] Speaker 3: not going to beat the race.
[1:00:49] Speaker 5: He tried to kind of fan the fire going in
[1:00:51] Speaker 5: where he's like, yeah, it'll be a home game for us.
[1:00:54] Speaker 2: Blah, blah, blah.
[1:00:54] Speaker 3: You know, whatever people to talk shit about.
[1:00:57] Speaker 2: Him, literally rage baiting people.
[1:00:59] Speaker 5: Um, I will say too, though, you know what Rasmussen
[1:01:02] Speaker 5: did in those eight innings. Now you had Brian Baker
[1:01:05] Speaker 5: shut the door and 14 pitches.
[1:01:06] Speaker 2: Everyone's available. I know for the most part, everyone should.
[1:01:09] Speaker 5: Be available for the Yankees, you know, and, and, and
[1:01:12] Speaker 5: that's going to make it pretty even at least here.
[1:01:14] Speaker 5: But the fact that you've just got this whole raised bullpen,
[1:01:17] Speaker 5: all hands on deck as well, uh, and for them
[1:01:20] Speaker 5: an opportunity to go up to zip, I think they're,
[1:01:21] Speaker 5: they're going to push pretty hard here.
