[0:14] Speaker 1: What just happened? The Brewers-Padres game just ended with a
[0:21] Speaker 1: play that I still don't fully understand. A ball hits
[0:26] Speaker 1: off the roof in the ninth inning, and it's ruled
[0:30] Speaker 1: an out. Padres fans are probably livid. Brewers fans rejoice.
[0:36] Speaker 1: A 3-2 victory. And I think what was clearly the
[0:39] Speaker 1: most competitive game of the day. We already did a
[0:42] Speaker 1: live stream reacting to everything before this game. We even
[0:46] Speaker 1: talked about the first probably six innings of this game.
[0:49] Speaker 1: And for those of you who might be tuning into
[0:52] Speaker 1: this after the fact, I mean, this was a game
[0:57] Speaker 1: that it started off with Jacob Mizorowski. getting knocked out
[1:02] Speaker 1: of the game after just four innings. He was at
[1:04] Speaker 1: 58 pitches through the first two, a 25-pitch first inning,
[1:09] Speaker 1: 33-pitch second inning where he gives up a couple runs,
[1:12] Speaker 1: three straight hits. Xander Bogarts, Ethan Salas, Luis Camposano. Camposano's
[1:18] Speaker 1: drove in a run, a broken back ground up by
[1:20] Speaker 1: Jake Cronenworth, brought in another. So it was an early
[1:24] Speaker 1: lead there for the Padres. The Brewers were able to
[1:27] Speaker 1: tie it up in the third inning. Robbie Ray ends
[1:30] Speaker 1: up giving up a leadoff single to Garrett Mitchell in
[1:34] Speaker 1: that third inning, and Jackson Churio ties it up. It
[1:36] Speaker 1: stays there for a while, bottom of the seventh. William Contreras,
[1:41] Speaker 1: after Adrian Morahona, got two outs on two pitches, goes
[1:44] Speaker 1: yard to give the Brewers a 3-2 lead. The Padres
[1:48] Speaker 1: loaded the bases multiple times in the late innings, couldn't
[1:51] Speaker 1: break through, and then we get to what is going
[1:54] Speaker 1: to be a very talked-about ninth inning where you have
[1:59] Speaker 1: a runner on, one out, And Ty France hits one
[2:03] Speaker 1: off the roof that Jackson Cheerio catches. And it is
[2:07] Speaker 1: an out. And that's the game. Basically, the next guy
[2:11] Speaker 1: gets out and it's over. But I mean, I've never seen.
[2:14] Speaker 1: I don't think I've ever seen that in a baseball game.
[2:18] Speaker 1: You've seen balls hit off the roof and trying to rule.
[2:20] Speaker 1: Is it his? And I think the one thing that
[2:23] Speaker 1: I'll get lost in this is Jackson Cheerio actually making
[2:26] Speaker 1: the catch because he's I guess theoretically, right, in other
[2:31] Speaker 1: situations like this, if the outfielder loses the ball, it
[2:34] Speaker 1: could have been frustration the other direction, right? Like, let's
[2:37] Speaker 1: just say Churro doesn't catch it, and all of a
[2:40] Speaker 1: sudden you have, like, the merry-go-round, everyone's running around the bases.
[2:43] Speaker 1: It's a different situation, but Churro gets under it, and
[2:46] Speaker 1: I guess because it was trending, they believe fair, it's
[2:51] Speaker 1: a ball in play and it's a catch. And that's
[2:54] Speaker 1: a brutal way to lose a baseball game if you're
[2:56] Speaker 1: a Padres fan. I'll just say that.
[2:58] Speaker 2: Dude.
[2:59] Speaker 3: I'm just confused, man. I mean, you see it on
[3:02] Speaker 3: the screen here for you for watching with this live
[3:04] Speaker 3: right now, like 105.3 at a 49 degree launch angle.
[3:10] Speaker 3: In my mind, that doesn't screen a home run. So
[3:12] Speaker 3: it's really hard to know what would have even happened.
[3:15] Speaker 3: But it is home, first of all, Dyken Park. It
[3:17] Speaker 3: would have been the Crawford boxes. I just checked that.
[3:19] Speaker 3: The one home run, at least on Baseball Savant, the
[3:22] Speaker 3: one of 30 that it would have been a home
[3:23] Speaker 3: run in would have been Dyken Park. So I guess
[3:26] Speaker 3: it wouldn't probably have been a homer based on that here.
[3:29] Speaker 3: But then again, it was like carrying and obviously hit
[3:33] Speaker 3: a beam and then went right down in Churio. Yeah,
[3:35] Speaker 3: great catch by Churio.
[3:36] Speaker 1: Give him credit there.
[3:37] Speaker 3: But what? I just, I don't, I'm still trying to
[3:41] Speaker 3: wrap my head around what just happened. And I don't
[3:42] Speaker 3: know how there's not some sort of, what do you
[3:48] Speaker 3: call that though? Even if it's not an out, do
[3:50] Speaker 3: you call that a dead ball? Do you call it
[3:51] Speaker 3: a ground rule double?
[3:53] Speaker 1: Apparently it's in play. Look, I want to put the
[3:56] Speaker 1: comment on the street because you have Dodgers fans going
[3:58] Speaker 1: to bat for the Padres right now. And that's when
[4:01] Speaker 1: you know, for those who are listening on the audio
[4:03] Speaker 1: side on the playback potentially, so as a Dodgers fan,
[4:05] Speaker 1: I'm no friend of the Padres, but they generally got
[4:07] Speaker 1: robbed tonight. The ball hit the roof in foul territory.
[4:10] Speaker 1: San Diego absolutely needs to file an official protest. They will,
[4:13] Speaker 1: but I don't know. Are they going to really retroactively
[4:14] Speaker 1: take away a– No. There's no chance. I think the
[4:18] Speaker 1: one thing, I guess, if you are trying to defend
[4:21] Speaker 1: it as a Brewers fan with what podcast people put
[4:23] Speaker 1: on the screen, the expected batting average on a fly
[4:26] Speaker 1: ball hit that way would be 50. So on a certain–
[4:30] Speaker 1: I guess to a certain extent, if the roof wasn't there,
[4:33] Speaker 1: if it was open– And it just plays out Jackson Churio,
[4:38] Speaker 1: whether that ball probably would have been foul or fair.
[4:40] Speaker 1: He probably catches it, I guess. And again, I'm just,
[4:44] Speaker 1: I'm marveling more and more than I think about this
[4:47] Speaker 1: as just the fact that Churio was able to make
[4:50] Speaker 1: it look so routine because I mean, it's not that
[4:54] Speaker 1: easy to catch a ball that ricochets down like that.
[4:57] Speaker 1: He made it. And maybe it's easier than that. Maybe
[4:59] Speaker 1: I'm giving him too much credit, but it's, it's just,
[5:01] Speaker 1: I've never seen anything like that. It's just wild that
[5:04] Speaker 1: a game essentially ends that way.
[5:06] Speaker 3: Yeah. And it's not like this was a, you know,
[5:09] Speaker 3: a game that it wouldn't have been a huge difference maker.
[5:11] Speaker 3: And I mean, this was a really tight game and
[5:13] Speaker 3: a game that we talked about it on the last stream.
[5:15] Speaker 3: We were recapping the first three games in the beginning
[5:16] Speaker 3: of this game. Like, this was a game the Padres
[5:20] Speaker 3: would have been stealing, right? And them getting to go
[5:23] Speaker 3: into a bullpen with a tie game on a Jacob
[5:26] Speaker 3: Mizorowski start day was such a huge moment there for
[5:29] Speaker 3: San Diego and a game where if they win this game,
[5:31] Speaker 3: like they could have carried that momentum all the way into,
[5:33] Speaker 3: you know, the rest of the series. You just ended
[5:36] Speaker 3: up on here on the screen right now. I don't
[5:39] Speaker 3: really know.
[5:40] Speaker 2: Ball. Yeah.
[5:41] Speaker 3: Ball and play.
[5:44] Speaker 1: Ball strikes the roof, roof truss, roof cable over fair territory.
[5:47] Speaker 1: If caught, batters out and runners advance at their own risk.
[5:51] Speaker 1: Dead ball, ball strikes the roof over foul territory. But
[5:54] Speaker 1: it's such a judgment call at that point, right? It's like,
[5:57] Speaker 1: how do you actually know the trajectory of that? Because
[6:00] Speaker 1: it does kind of look like it was heading... It
[6:03] Speaker 1: was heading foul.
[6:03] Speaker 3: It looked like it was hooking at least a little bit, right?
[6:05] Speaker 3: But it's hard to know because it was, at the time,
[6:07] Speaker 3: it does look like, it did look like it was
[6:10] Speaker 3: over left field. So it's hard to say that it
[6:11] Speaker 3: was foul when, even if it was hooking foul, it
[6:14] Speaker 3: was seemingly at the time above fair territory, right?
[6:17] Speaker 1: I mean, I think by letter of the law, they
[6:20] Speaker 1: got it right because it strikes the roof and pretty
[6:22] Speaker 1: much drops right down. And he's, you know, Jackson Shurio
[6:25] Speaker 1: is not standing. necessarily even close to the line at
[6:27] Speaker 1: that point when he makes that catch. So I guess
[6:30] Speaker 1: by letter of the law and shout out to podcast
[6:32] Speaker 1: beef for pulling this up so quick, it is, it is.
[6:36] Speaker 1: I mean, I, they got the call, right. I guess
[6:38] Speaker 1: based on the rule, but I mean, that's not going
[6:41] Speaker 1: to help you sleep at night. If you're a Padres
[6:42] Speaker 1: fan right now, the one thing I will say though,
[6:45] Speaker 1: they had their chances to win that game. Like for sure. Like, yes,
[6:50] Speaker 1: that was, that's, what's going to get talked about. That's
[6:52] Speaker 1: going to be, The overall story of this game, that's
[6:55] Speaker 1: going to be the thing that everyone is talking about tomorrow.
[6:58] Speaker 1: But they loaded the bases twice late. And also, the
[7:01] Speaker 1: at-bats that we saw in that last inning from Tatis
[7:05] Speaker 1: and Machado just were not very good. So, I mean,
[7:08] Speaker 1: that's one thing to say there that it didn't all
[7:13] Speaker 1: boil down to that play. But again, it's just one
[7:16] Speaker 1: of those things where it's hard to even look at
[7:19] Speaker 1: anything else from that game but that play.
[7:22] Speaker 3: It's just one of those plays that we're going to
[7:23] Speaker 3: see all over the internet tomorrow. We were recording here
[7:25] Speaker 3: like after midnight on the East coast. And like, that's
[7:28] Speaker 3: going to be everywhere tomorrow morning. And I don't really know.
[7:31] Speaker 3: And people, we got people in the comments who saying
[7:33] Speaker 3: it's like, it was a Homer. Like, I don't know
[7:35] Speaker 3: that that was a Homer, right? It's a 49 degree
[7:37] Speaker 3: launch angle. I don't think that ball was a home run.
[7:40] Speaker 3: I think the harder difference maker there is, was it
[7:43] Speaker 3: trending foul? Because again, by the rule there, as Peyton
[7:46] Speaker 3: just put up on the screen, like it is, That
[7:49] Speaker 3: is the correct ruling, I think. But it's really hard
[7:52] Speaker 3: to tell there if the ball's, you know, hooking foul
[7:55] Speaker 3: or if it was going to stay fair. I don't
[7:57] Speaker 3: think it was a homer, but it was really hard
[7:59] Speaker 3: and it was still going up. So, like, I don't know, man.
[8:02] Speaker 3: That just breaks my brain. And there's going to be
[8:04] Speaker 3: some serious dialogue around, you know, that play.
[8:07] Speaker 1: It's like how much do you trust the stat cast, right?
[8:10] Speaker 1: Because the stat cast would tell us pretty definitively that
[8:14] Speaker 1: was not going to be a home run. but I
[8:16] Speaker 1: also like for me watching it, when I watched it
[8:19] Speaker 1: hit off the roof and where it hit, like it,
[8:22] Speaker 1: it didn't look like that trajectory was that far from dropping,
[8:25] Speaker 1: but at the same time, you don't see many home
[8:28] Speaker 1: runs with a 49 degree launch angle. I mean, so it's,
[8:32] Speaker 1: it's just a crazy way for, for a game to end.
[8:36] Speaker 1: And it's just, it's wild. You get past midnight, I guess,
[8:40] Speaker 1: you know, spooky season stuff just starts happening. But, I
[8:45] Speaker 1: don't know. That was, I got, I'm almost at a
[8:48] Speaker 1: loss for words. It's just, it's such a shocker that, uh, yeah.
[8:53] Speaker 3: And the game at a whole had, you know, really
[8:55] Speaker 3: good moments.
[8:56] Speaker 2: Right.
[8:56] Speaker 3: I think that it was interesting. That was, uh, you know,
[8:59] Speaker 3: Jacob is Rowski had not his best start, even though
[9:02] Speaker 3: he started the game by throwing one Oh five out
[9:03] Speaker 3: of the gate. Like, Padres worked him hard. They got
[9:05] Speaker 3: him up to 88 pitches in four innings. I think
[9:07] Speaker 3: we were talking earlier. It was 58 pitches through two innings,
[9:12] Speaker 3: and they were working the heck out of his counts
[9:14] Speaker 3: and putting him in a position that he was not
[9:16] Speaker 3: that comfortable. And then they're able to chase him. And
[9:18] Speaker 3: even with giving up the two-run homer to Churrio, who's
[9:21] Speaker 3: an absolute demon in the playoffs, you got a situation
[9:24] Speaker 3: where the Padres had the 2-2 game. Their bullpen plays
[9:28] Speaker 3: to their strength. They give back the lead. Also, we
[9:30] Speaker 3: didn't even really mention William Contreras. William Contreras with an
[9:33] Speaker 3: absolutely clutch home run off of a guy in Morohone
[9:35] Speaker 3: who's been awesome all season, been one of the best
[9:38] Speaker 3: relievers in baseball. So they're able to, you know, get
[9:40] Speaker 3: ahead there. Milwaukee takes the lead on that Contreras homer.
[9:44] Speaker 3: And then next thing you know, the Padres are fighting back,
[9:47] Speaker 3: but Tatis and Machado get stuffed in a locker by McGill.
[9:51] Speaker 3: And that was one of those, like, you saw their
[9:53] Speaker 3: two best, you know, their two best bats who had
[9:55] Speaker 3: had some good at bats earlier and had some big
[9:56] Speaker 3: moments in the wild card. Both of them went down,
[9:59] Speaker 3: not pretty fashion in that last two innings, and then
[10:02] Speaker 3: Dustin Harris gives them a shot, he gets on base.
[10:04] Speaker 3: They've got a chance there. Obviously, if that ball was
[10:07] Speaker 3: somehow a homer, that's taking the lead there, and even
[10:10] Speaker 3: if it's not, you don't know what would happen there
[10:12] Speaker 3: if that wasn't ruled an out or if it wasn't caught.
[10:15] Speaker 3: It seems like by the rule, if that ball dropped...
[10:17] Speaker 3: it would have been fair play. And then probably Dustin
[10:20] Speaker 3: Harris comes around to score on that potentially.
[10:22] Speaker 4: So I don't know.
[10:23] Speaker 1: That's the thing too. Like I said before, you know,
[10:26] Speaker 1: there's a different version of that play. I mean, you
[10:29] Speaker 1: think about the beam that it must've hit off of, like,
[10:31] Speaker 1: let's say it hits off the side of that beam
[10:34] Speaker 1: and ricochets way away from cheerio bounces fair letter of
[10:38] Speaker 1: the law. Harris is coming around to score. I France
[10:41] Speaker 1: might be standing on the third base and now Brewers
[10:43] Speaker 1: fans are pissed. So the same people that are now
[10:46] Speaker 1: going to argue, hey, that's the rule. It was fair.
[10:48] Speaker 1: If the roles are reversed, they'd be arguing the exact opposite.
[10:53] Speaker 1: It goes back and forth with the Padres. And you're right.
[10:56] Speaker 1: The Padres did a lot well in that game. You
[10:59] Speaker 1: are countering the Cy Young with Robbie Ray, and you
[11:02] Speaker 1: piece it together with your bullpen and do an unbelievable
[11:07] Speaker 1: job to hang in there. Again, they had their chances
[11:11] Speaker 1: with the base load a couple times that they couldn't
[11:13] Speaker 1: come through on. But yeah, you know, in that, in
[11:16] Speaker 1: that clubhouse right now, they're feeling, you know, completely jibbed
[11:19] Speaker 1: because it's just, you don't see that.
[11:21] Speaker 3: The other crazy thing is it could have gotten like
[11:23] Speaker 3: lodged up there hypothetically. And then what is, I think
[11:25] Speaker 3: in that case, it's a ground rule double, right? So
[11:27] Speaker 3: it's like, I just, I don't even really know. I don't,
[11:30] Speaker 3: I'm not even sure how to exactly react to that.
[11:32] Speaker 3: And I think it's going to be a crazy storyline
[11:35] Speaker 3: for the rest of the series. I mean, hopefully that's
[11:36] Speaker 3: not the difference maker, but ultimately like we talked about
[11:39] Speaker 3: it a lot. This is going to be a really
[11:40] Speaker 3: close series. And yeah, one game in a five game
[11:43] Speaker 3: series that ends in that fashion, obviously could be the
[11:45] Speaker 3: entire difference in this series between Milwaukee and San Diego. Yeah. I,
[11:51] Speaker 3: I'm really not sure. It seems like it's going to
[11:53] Speaker 3: be interesting. This is another one. So dead. So let's
[11:55] Speaker 3: say the other thing I was considering is if it
[11:58] Speaker 3: was a, if it was a dead ball, ball strikes roof.
[12:02] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[12:03] Speaker 1: It's dead. If it strikes, if it, if it's over
[12:05] Speaker 1: foul territory. And so I guess they're able to, so,
[12:09] Speaker 1: so I guess it's not, it's not a matter of
[12:11] Speaker 1: if it is, So for example, let's just say it
[12:14] Speaker 1: hits off a beam that's 15 feet foul and then
[12:17] Speaker 1: it ricochets 30 feet to the right and lands in
[12:20] Speaker 1: fair territory.
[12:21] Speaker 3: It would have been dead still.
[12:22] Speaker 1: That's a dead ball. So basically by the letter of
[12:24] Speaker 1: the law, anything that's over the field of play, even
[12:27] Speaker 1: if it was trending that way, it's fair. I guess
[12:30] Speaker 1: if someone hits one that's straight up and it would
[12:36] Speaker 1: have gone foul, but it hits the roof and bounces
[12:39] Speaker 1: down in fair territory, Based on the rule, it's fair,
[12:43] Speaker 1: but it almost makes you just think anything off the
[12:45] Speaker 1: roof should just be dead ball, and you call it
[12:50] Speaker 1: a foul ball, and you just continue that bat. But yeah,
[12:55] Speaker 1: I mean, I get it. It's crazy. I'm seeing a
[12:58] Speaker 1: lot of the comments. Everyone, I think from people watching it,
[13:04] Speaker 1: the way that this is going to, I think, be...
[13:07] Speaker 1: be processed. And what people are going to frame this
[13:10] Speaker 1: is that was a two run Homer. If it doesn't
[13:12] Speaker 1: hit the roof. And that's where, like, if we could
[13:16] Speaker 1: show the other, the, again, the stack cast one more time,
[13:19] Speaker 1: because again, the stack cast, believe it or not, it
[13:23] Speaker 1: is suggesting that that would not have been a home run.
[13:25] Speaker 3: It's 49 degrees. I mean, that's the thing. It's a
[13:27] Speaker 3: 49 degree. It was hit really hard and it was
[13:30] Speaker 3: still traveling, but it was a 49 degree ball, which
[13:33] Speaker 3: in almost every scenario, a ball hit at 49 degrees
[13:36] Speaker 3: is a fly out ultimately. I don't know, man.
[13:39] Speaker 2: I don't know.
[13:40] Speaker 3: I don't know how to think about this one. This
[13:41] Speaker 3: is going to be a storyline for the rest of
[13:43] Speaker 3: the series and potentially the rest of the playoffs, depending
[13:45] Speaker 3: on how the winner of the series continues to play
[13:47] Speaker 3: and how that goes from there. So, yeah, it's a
[13:51] Speaker 3: crazy way for a really tight game to end, and
[13:53] Speaker 3: especially a series that these guys are back at it tomorrow.
[13:56] Speaker 3: They all used their big dogs for the most part
[13:57] Speaker 3: out of the bullpen. Obviously, we didn't see Mason Miller
[13:59] Speaker 3: because there wasn't a save opportunity, but other than that, like,
[14:02] Speaker 3: we saw Uribe, we saw Morajon, we saw, I mean,
[14:04] Speaker 3: we saw these teams go for it in this game
[14:06] Speaker 3: after two, you know, Robbie Ray only went two and two-thirds,
[14:08] Speaker 3: and Jacob Mizorowski, you know, you're kind of penciling in
[14:11] Speaker 3: for six-inning starts, only went four innings. So both these
[14:13] Speaker 3: teams were forced to use their big guys out of
[14:15] Speaker 3: the pen, and And they got to run this back
[14:17] Speaker 3: tomorrow coming off of a game like this. And now
[14:19] Speaker 3: San Diego is in a situation where they kind of
[14:21] Speaker 3: have to win tomorrow.
[14:23] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[14:24] Speaker 1: It just for, for a team in San Diego that
[14:26] Speaker 1: had so much momentum coming into this and, you know, you, you,
[14:31] Speaker 1: you end on a play like that. It, it, it almost,
[14:34] Speaker 1: it's like, it's like losing twice because you feel not
[14:36] Speaker 1: only do you, do you lose the game, but you
[14:38] Speaker 1: feel like you were robbed. And look, I'm not, Even
[14:42] Speaker 1: though the StatCast is on the screen, I understand what
[14:45] Speaker 1: everyone's saying when you watch it. It does look like
[14:48] Speaker 1: that ball was going out. It's hard to know. StatCast
[14:52] Speaker 1: is not 100% accurate It's just– it's one of those
[14:56] Speaker 1: things where we have no idea what would have happened
[14:58] Speaker 1: if a roof wasn't there. But a roof is– for
[15:01] Speaker 1: all we know too, like maybe that ball does travel
[15:03] Speaker 1: instead of 325. Maybe it travels 380 and it goes out.
[15:07] Speaker 1: But it could have hooked foul. It could have– like
[15:09] Speaker 1: that's the thing. You really don't know. But again, based
[15:13] Speaker 1: on what the rule is, it hit the roof in
[15:16] Speaker 1: what's designated as in the field of play and it
[15:20] Speaker 1: just dropped straight down at the Cheerios glove. And you're just–
[15:25] Speaker 1: You're just your mind's bottled, but that's just kind of
[15:28] Speaker 1: that's where we're at. There's nothing you can do about it.
[15:31] Speaker 1: I'm sure they'll try to appeal it, but I mean,
[15:33] Speaker 1: Major League Baseball is not going to change that. Again,
[15:36] Speaker 1: the ruling based on what's in there, the ground rules,
[15:40] Speaker 1: it's it's pretty kind of cut and dry that they
[15:42] Speaker 1: ruled it properly based on what those ground rules are.
[15:46] Speaker 3: And you can argue about what the rules should be
[15:48] Speaker 3: or what Milwaukee Stadium should be, whatever. You can make
[15:50] Speaker 3: those arguments, but there's nothing you can– in the rule book,
[15:54] Speaker 3: we just read it. That is technically the way to
[15:57] Speaker 3: rule it, I think, and I'm not sure what else
[15:58] Speaker 3: they could have done there. It just is– no matter what,
[16:01] Speaker 3: it's going to feel like shit to Padres fans because
[16:03] Speaker 3: that's a really brutal way for a game to end.
[16:07] Speaker 3: I don't know, man. It's– Yeah, this is going to
[16:11] Speaker 3: be a fascinating one to see how it keeps and
[16:15] Speaker 3: plays out over the next few days.
[16:17] Speaker 1: But here's what I'll say, though. You had in the
[16:21] Speaker 1: eighth inning, you had, what, runners at the corners to
[16:23] Speaker 1: tease up against McGill, and he chases two pitches nowhere
[16:27] Speaker 1: near the zone. There was other chances that they had
[16:31] Speaker 1: to win that game. Even Jackson Merrill comes up, they
[16:34] Speaker 1: load the bases in the seventh, top of the seventh. Actually,
[16:37] Speaker 1: it was top of the eighth, but we're top of
[16:38] Speaker 1: the seventh. And Jackson Merrill, you know, flies out. So
[16:41] Speaker 1: like there was, there was other opportunities that they had,
[16:45] Speaker 1: but no, one's going to be talking about that tomorrow.
[16:48] Speaker 1: I mean, it's just.
[16:49] Speaker 3: Do you have any other takeaways aside from obviously that,
[16:52] Speaker 3: that crazy play? Cause I know we talked about on
[16:54] Speaker 3: different stream, but like one of the big things is
[16:55] Speaker 3: Jackson Cheerios, just post-season menace. William Contreras obviously comes through
[17:00] Speaker 3: in a, in a big way as well. But I
[17:02] Speaker 3: don't think there was anything else that super stood out
[17:04] Speaker 3: to me. I do think. The Miz being not great
[17:06] Speaker 3: was surprising to me, I think we all expected. But
[17:08] Speaker 3: then again, the Padres' offense is the hottest in baseball,
[17:10] Speaker 3: so they had good at-bats against them, and they did
[17:13] Speaker 3: their job.
[17:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, nothing else major. I do think that Contreras'
[17:18] Speaker 1: home run is going to get buried through all this.
[17:21] Speaker 1: I mean, you're talking about Adrian Moore at home, one
[17:24] Speaker 1: of the best relievers in baseball, who got the first
[17:28] Speaker 1: two guys out on two pitches. He works a full count,
[17:31] Speaker 1: takes 100-mile-per-hour fastball, to deep right center field for, at
[17:36] Speaker 1: this point, it was a game-winning homer. So I don't
[17:39] Speaker 1: think that people are going to even remember that home
[17:41] Speaker 1: run now because of this situation, but it was still
[17:45] Speaker 1: a big moment for Contreras to come through there and
[17:47] Speaker 1: proves to be the difference in this one.
[17:50] Speaker 4: All I wanted to add was that I think visually
[17:53] Speaker 4: it does look like a homer and it very well
[17:55] Speaker 4: could have. I do think one of the more interesting
[17:57] Speaker 4: questions would be, when some of the more advanced tracking
[18:02] Speaker 4: data comes out to see what the path was, because
[18:05] Speaker 4: you could maybe argue he's going foul, but something I
[18:07] Speaker 4: wanted to mention, which I'm not saying that this means
[18:11] Speaker 4: that it couldn't have been a homer, is we haven't
[18:13] Speaker 4: seen a 49 degree launch angle homer at an indoor
[18:16] Speaker 4: stadium in the StatCast era. So there is, again, maybe
[18:21] Speaker 4: usually that stuff is red off the bat, so a
[18:23] Speaker 4: deflection really shouldn't affect it, but there could be a
[18:26] Speaker 4: chance that there could have been a weird misread based
[18:29] Speaker 4: on everything that happens. But I do think that's interesting
[18:31] Speaker 4: context to consider. Regardless, I feel like that is the rule.
[18:36] Speaker 4: That is the correct ruling by the rule book. But
[18:39] Speaker 4: I feel like that rule kind of sucks.
[18:44] Speaker 3: It sucks.
[18:44] Speaker 1: And again, the wild part about this is that, like
[18:48] Speaker 1: we mentioned, it was just, that's what makes baseball so great,
[18:53] Speaker 1: but also so frustrating. It comes down to a bounce.
[18:56] Speaker 1: That ball, I gave Churro a lot of credit, and
[18:59] Speaker 1: I still think it's a pretty impressive play that he
[19:01] Speaker 1: was able to read that as well as he did.
[19:03] Speaker 1: But the fact is, that ball hits a little bit
[19:07] Speaker 1: different off of that beam, and it drops down in
[19:10] Speaker 1: fair territory, and Churro doesn't catch it, or he just
[19:14] Speaker 1: whiffs it. And it's a whole different... The exact same
[19:18] Speaker 1: feelings are just inverse. It goes the other way, where
[19:21] Speaker 1: Padres fans are rejoicing and Brewers fans are pissed.
[19:25] Speaker 4: The interesting thing to me, too, was that um i
[19:29] Speaker 4: said this when we were watching it i felt like
[19:31] Speaker 4: ty france wasn't pissed off enough like i'm not gonna
[19:36] Speaker 4: lie like i'm not necessarily locked into his personality so
[19:39] Speaker 4: maybe that's just who he is but like i feel
[19:41] Speaker 4: like he was really calm for what happened there like
[19:44] Speaker 4: he had a potential go-ahead home run in a playoff
[19:47] Speaker 4: game taken away but maybe that speaks to maybe he
[19:51] Speaker 4: thought it was foul.
[19:52] Speaker 3: Or he thought it was a pop-up. Or he just
[19:54] Speaker 3: thought he flew out to left field.
[19:57] Speaker 4: I feel like his reaction to the whole thing was
[19:59] Speaker 4: insanely calm for what it looked like.
[20:03] Speaker 1: I feel like he was more arguing it was foul. Well,
[20:05] Speaker 1: that's my point.
[20:07] Speaker 4: My point is more like I don't know if he's
[20:11] Speaker 4: spoken about it publicly yet, so I'll keep an eye
[20:13] Speaker 4: out for that. But based on his reaction, it doesn't
[20:15] Speaker 4: seem like he felt like it was a home run.
[20:17] Speaker 1: No, I don't think so. And all we got out
[20:20] Speaker 1: of him for animation at the very end when they
[20:23] Speaker 1: officially came back from the replay review and confirmed it
[20:26] Speaker 1: was an out, he just threw his gum. That's all
[20:30] Speaker 1: he did. So he did throw his gum.
[20:32] Speaker 4: But I feel like... I hate projecting onto people, but
[20:37] Speaker 4: if he... knew that was a home run, I would
[20:40] Speaker 4: have felt like he would have maybe reacted more. I
[20:42] Speaker 4: guess it is a playoff game. You don't want to,
[20:44] Speaker 4: I'm not saying you should have been ejected and I'm,
[20:46] Speaker 4: he wouldn't have done anything to do that, but if
[20:49] Speaker 4: he felt pretty calm for the gravity of that.
[20:51] Speaker 1: Moment, you wonder like if, if, if it's Tatis that
[20:55] Speaker 1: hits that, what's the reaction, you know, is there, is
[20:58] Speaker 1: there more animation potentially? Obviously again, based on, on the
[21:03] Speaker 1: rule book that they're going by, they got it right.
[21:07] Speaker 1: it's just whether you think that rule book is fair. Ultimately.
[21:10] Speaker 1: And I do think we should talk a little bit
[21:11] Speaker 1: about game too, because the one, you know, kind of
[21:14] Speaker 1: saving grace for the Padres, they got Michael King geared
[21:18] Speaker 1: up to go now, Logan Henderson's going on the other side.
[21:20] Speaker 1: So it's a great pitching matchup, but the way Michael King,
[21:23] Speaker 1: you know, pitched in the wildcard round, like, especially with
[21:26] Speaker 1: the way they had to extend their bullpen in this game,
[21:29] Speaker 1: like Michael King, it's time for him to step up
[21:32] Speaker 1: in a big way. And it's the guy that's, that's
[21:34] Speaker 1: in a contract year too. So, a big moment for
[21:37] Speaker 1: King to, you know, if Michael King goes out and
[21:39] Speaker 1: shoves and the Padres, you know, put up four early
[21:42] Speaker 1: runs tomorrow, then like this story kind of goes away.
[21:45] Speaker 1: If the Brewers take game two, then this is just
[21:48] Speaker 1: going to become the narrative for the rest of the series, probably.
[21:51] Speaker 2: Right.
[21:52] Speaker 3: And what I will add to that though, in terms
[21:53] Speaker 3: of the Padres layout is they have Michael King. They
[21:55] Speaker 3: also do like, they, they use their bullpen today, but
[21:57] Speaker 3: the only guy that threw over 20 pitches was more on.
[21:59] Speaker 3: And he was the one that gave up that, you know,
[22:01] Speaker 3: game losing Homer anyways to Contreras. So pretty much other than,
[22:05] Speaker 3: than mora home i would expect everybody else to be
[22:06] Speaker 3: available for them still tomorrow bradley rodriguez through 19 pitches
[22:09] Speaker 3: yuki matsui 15 jason adams 16 so as much as
[22:12] Speaker 3: they did use the pen i think all those guys
[22:15] Speaker 3: knowing that they have a day off the next day
[22:16] Speaker 3: would probably be available so it really is probably only
[22:19] Speaker 3: more home it's not available you've got king you've got
[22:21] Speaker 3: a fully three days of rest mason miller to unload
[22:23] Speaker 3: if you need it like mason miller i wouldn't be
[22:25] Speaker 3: shocked to see go you know two innings two and
[22:27] Speaker 3: a half inning saves type of thing tomorrow if you
[22:28] Speaker 3: need him to so i do think the podgers are
[22:30] Speaker 3: in a good position With that said, Logan Henderson, man,
[22:33] Speaker 3: he not to be messed with a guy that's probably
[22:35] Speaker 3: not as known as Michael King or obviously then, you know,
[22:37] Speaker 3: the guys like Miss Rowski today, Logan Henderson's a beast.
[22:40] Speaker 3: He's had a really good season and he's someone that,
[22:42] Speaker 3: you know, the JV crew has been higher on, I
[22:43] Speaker 3: think than the national public for, for quite some time now.
[22:46] Speaker 3: So I do think that like, he's going to be
[22:48] Speaker 3: legit in what he's doing there. So I don't know.
[22:52] Speaker 3: I am curious to the matchup either way though. Like,
[22:55] Speaker 3: like you said, if San Diego loses tomorrow, it's going
[22:58] Speaker 3: to be, The conversations around this series is going to
[23:01] Speaker 3: continue to come right back to this moment and that play.
[23:04] Speaker 3: And it's hard to talk about anything else because that
[23:06] Speaker 3: play was just something we haven't seen.
[23:11] Speaker 4: So on that note, wow, that was embarrassing. Just baseball writer,
[23:17] Speaker 4: Matt Carroll.
[23:19] Speaker 3: Yes, sir.
[23:19] Speaker 4: I got that name, right? Just baseball writer. Matt Carroll
[23:22] Speaker 4: is at the game doing press and he got a
[23:25] Speaker 4: quote from Craig Stammen going over that insane play.
[23:29] Speaker 1: So let's go over it.
[23:36] Speaker 2: And the rule is if they deem the ball to
[23:38] Speaker 2: be fair and it comes down, you can catch it.
[23:41] Speaker 2: If it hits off the roof foul, then it's a
[23:43] Speaker 2: foul ball. So they ruled that it hit the roof
[23:46] Speaker 2: fair and now hitter caught it. So unfortunately it was
[23:50] Speaker 2: a bad break for us. It looked like it was
[23:52] Speaker 2: a possible home run. You know, just didn't go our way.
[23:55] Speaker 2: Second time that's happened this year to the Padres. So,
[23:58] Speaker 2: We should be able to bounce back just fine from it.
[24:00] Speaker 2: Hits it off the roof foul.
[24:02] Speaker 4: I just want to hear it.
[24:03] Speaker 2: So they ruled that it hit the roof fair, and
[24:08] Speaker 2: now a hitter caught it. So unfortunately, it was a
[24:10] Speaker 2: bad break for us. It looked like it was a
[24:11] Speaker 2: possible home run. You know, just didn't go our way.
[24:15] Speaker 2: Second time that's happened this year to the Padres, so
[24:18] Speaker 2: we should be able to bounce back just fine from it.
[24:21] Speaker 4: Sorry, I thought he said impossible. He said possible.
[24:24] Speaker 3: I just wanted to like, it was a very tame response.
[24:28] Speaker 3: I feel like he took the peaceful route there.
[24:30] Speaker 2: Right.
[24:30] Speaker 3: He could have been a lot more pointed with that.
[24:31] Speaker 3: You know, hopefully, hopefully the impression that is able to
[24:35] Speaker 3: be made on the Padres clubhouse is like, you move on,
[24:37] Speaker 3: you chalk it and you keep going and they're able
[24:39] Speaker 3: to bounce back tomorrow. But I can imagine it's kind
[24:42] Speaker 3: of demoralizing for a team, even if that is the
[24:44] Speaker 3: message being preached. So, I don't know. There's, there was
[24:47] Speaker 3: a lot of other things the Padres did wrong in
[24:49] Speaker 3: this game. Let's be clear. Like they, like Fink mentioned earlier,
[24:52] Speaker 3: like they had their opportunities, especially when you chase Jacob
[24:55] Speaker 3: Mizrowski in four innings, like they had their chances to
[24:57] Speaker 3: win this game that didn't just come down to that play.
[24:59] Speaker 3: It just, it's, it's hard to not, you know, keep,
[25:01] Speaker 3: keep thinking about it. Yeah.
[25:03] Speaker 4: I mean, like, listen, I think both teams, which is funny.
[25:06] Speaker 4: Cause I think this is like the, listen, this is
[25:08] Speaker 4: the Brewers MO and I guess the Padres are hot.
[25:11] Speaker 4: Both teams kind of, crowd themselves in a lot of
[25:14] Speaker 4: big moments tonight. San Diego went one for nine with
[25:16] Speaker 4: runs in scoring position, I think. They left 12 runners
[25:18] Speaker 4: on base. Milwaukee left nine runners on base. You know,
[25:21] Speaker 4: it was decided by Milwaukee. They decided this game with
[25:24] Speaker 4: two homers. You know, it's rare to see Milwaukee just
[25:27] Speaker 4: win a game with homers. That's not really what you'd
[25:29] Speaker 4: expect from them. And while the Padres manufactured the runs
[25:32] Speaker 4: in ways you'd expect Milwaukee to, But yeah, I mean,
[25:35] Speaker 4: I think it's kind of rough that the game ended
[25:38] Speaker 4: the way it did because you forget that Tatis had
[25:41] Speaker 4: a miserable at-bat. And I don't think mentioned that Machado
[25:44] Speaker 4: would give a bit more grace since, you know, I
[25:46] Speaker 4: guess it was a lower leverage situation than Tatis because
[25:49] Speaker 4: a runner was literally 90 feet.
[25:50] Speaker 3: Away from home.
[25:51] Speaker 4: But yep, that's going to be the finding play of
[25:53] Speaker 4: this series. That's what it's going to be.
[25:56] Speaker 3: Yeah, and we'll see. San Diego might bounce back and
[25:59] Speaker 3: they'll be fine. So you never know.
[26:01] Speaker 1: Again, if the Brewers win tomorrow and it's 2-0, then
[26:05] Speaker 1: you have a Monday off day. And then you, you like,
[26:07] Speaker 1: this is the type of play that actually like makes
[26:09] Speaker 1: its way to first take this type of play that,
[26:12] Speaker 1: that gets that, that full national media attention. And it's
[26:15] Speaker 1: going to define this series one way or the other.
[26:17] Speaker 1: It's either going to be the Padres overcame this bad
[26:21] Speaker 1: break or the Padres got screwed. And that's why they're
[26:25] Speaker 1: out of it. And that's just, that's just how it's
[26:27] Speaker 1: going to probably be remembered. But it overshadows what was
[26:31] Speaker 1: a great baseball game. I mean, the best game of
[26:33] Speaker 1: the day, I think for sure. But it'll all just
[26:36] Speaker 1: come down to that one highlight.
[26:38] Speaker 4: It's really just so confusing, though, because you'd expect with
[26:41] Speaker 4: all the data we have now that they could have... Well,
[26:45] Speaker 4: I know... To be clear, the rule is the rule.
[26:48] Speaker 4: That's just how it is. But I'm more saying that
[26:54] Speaker 4: I feel like tomorrow morning we might have more conclusive
[26:58] Speaker 4: evidence on the whole thing. I mean, right now it
[27:01] Speaker 4: seems as if it wasn't a homer, I think.
[27:02] Speaker 2: But.
[27:04] Speaker 4: it feels like we're insulting people's intelligence of what they saw.
[27:07] Speaker 4: Like I think all of us visually watching that, it,
[27:10] Speaker 4: that had home run distance. The real question was, was
[27:12] Speaker 4: it going to hook or not? It stack has says
[27:16] Speaker 4: that was falling short of a home run. I guess
[27:18] Speaker 4: we'll see, I guess our more conclusive evidence in the morning,
[27:21] Speaker 4: but I'm really curious a see Ty Francis reaction and
[27:24] Speaker 4: B what, what really happened there?
[27:29] Speaker 1: I guess the, the, I think what kind of messes
[27:33] Speaker 1: with it visually, right? When you have a ball with
[27:36] Speaker 1: a launch angle of, what was it, 49 degrees? Is
[27:39] Speaker 1: that what it was?
[27:42] Speaker 2: Yes.
[27:42] Speaker 3: 47.
[27:43] Speaker 1: If that basically was about to get to its peak,
[27:48] Speaker 1: when it travels that far up, how quickly does it
[27:52] Speaker 1: spiral down where maybe it wouldn't have gone deep? But again,
[27:54] Speaker 1: because all you see is the rise and then you
[27:57] Speaker 1: see it hit the roof, it looks like it was
[28:00] Speaker 1: going to be a home run. And that's visually all
[28:02] Speaker 1: that matters. Like you can throw that. No, one's going
[28:05] Speaker 1: to care what the, what the stat cast says tomorrow.
[28:07] Speaker 1: Like if you, if you watch that, it's also, it's
[28:10] Speaker 1: so anticlimactic, right? We just watched a great baseball game.
[28:16] Speaker 1: And then you get a stop and play what the
[28:19] Speaker 1: hell happened. Everyone's like looking around wondering what's the rule.
[28:23] Speaker 1: And it just, it just, it ruins that, that flow
[28:26] Speaker 1: of what was a really good playoff baseball game. And
[28:29] Speaker 1: then the game just becomes that play. And that's, That's
[28:31] Speaker 1: just what it comes down to. And if you're, again,
[28:34] Speaker 1: if you're a Brewers fan, it was the rule. If
[28:37] Speaker 1: you're a Padres fan or just someone that was watching
[28:39] Speaker 1: a good baseball game that feels like you were robbed
[28:41] Speaker 1: of a better ending, that's what it comes down to.
[28:44] Speaker 1: That was a home run. That's ridiculous. If that goes out,
[28:47] Speaker 1: I mean, they're in Milwaukee. The Brewers get a chance
[28:50] Speaker 1: to answer. That game could go to extras.
[28:52] Speaker 3: You got Mason Miller in the first game.
[28:54] Speaker 1: Yeah, Mason Miller gets out there.
[28:56] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[28:58] Speaker 1: It's just a crazy, crazy ending. I'm glad we chose
[29:02] Speaker 1: to go live. I mean, we were just going to
[29:04] Speaker 1: talk about the end of that game. It turned into
[29:06] Speaker 1: something completely different that we decided to do this little
[29:08] Speaker 1: bonus show.
[29:10] Speaker 2: I know.
[29:11] Speaker 4: It really is incredible because we were like, oh, we'll
[29:13] Speaker 4: see if something crazy happens. And then literally one of
[29:16] Speaker 4: the craziest endings of my lifetime as a baseball fan happened.
[29:19] Speaker 4: I don't think it's hyperbole at all. What the hell
[29:22] Speaker 4: is that?
[29:23] Speaker 1: You could have given each of us a thousand guesses
[29:26] Speaker 1: on how that game would end and none of us
[29:27] Speaker 1: would have gotten it. There's no world where you would
[29:31] Speaker 1: have expected that.
[29:31] Speaker 4: It's just funny that's a possibility. I think of how
[29:35] Speaker 4: Lone Depot was built in 2011, I guess, 2012. and
[29:40] Speaker 4: like they had nasa design it for like no one
[29:43] Speaker 4: could hit the ceiling and don't really have an issue
[29:45] Speaker 4: there outside of aaron judge in the derby but like
[29:47] Speaker 4: it's just i guess the parks that were built like
[29:49] Speaker 4: a decade or so prior because i guess am fam
[29:52] Speaker 4: was like.
[29:52] Speaker 3: 2000 a little bit around then yeah so and it's
[29:56] Speaker 3: an issue there Aside from an unlucky hit tonight, I mean,
[29:59] Speaker 3: shout out Ty France, man. It would have been a
[30:01] Speaker 3: storybook added chapter to what has been a career season
[30:04] Speaker 3: for him. It was barely in baseball and hanging on
[30:07] Speaker 3: to stay around the league this year. And just put
[30:09] Speaker 3: up an 865 OPS for Milwaukee this year. He slugged 500,
[30:13] Speaker 3: pardon me, for San Diego. Slugged 500 with 21 homers
[30:16] Speaker 3: this season. So it would have been another little cherry
[30:19] Speaker 3: on top of an awesome season for Ty France. And unfortunately,
[30:22] Speaker 3: he doesn't get his storybook moment tonight. But you never know.
[30:25] Speaker 3: Maybe he'll have that moment in the next couple nights.
[30:27] Speaker 3: So we'll see.
[30:28] Speaker 1: Can you imagine if we get Brewers-Rays World Series and
[30:32] Speaker 1: the domes are in play? I mean, you're going to
[30:34] Speaker 1: have to go over the ground rules before it starts, right?
[30:37] Speaker 3: What's in play?
[30:38] Speaker 1: What's not? Make sure the viewers know because apparently that
[30:41] Speaker 1: could happen.
[30:45] Speaker 4: You know, Elijah, I think it's getting late for you, bro.
[30:52] Speaker 1: But anyway, yep.
[30:53] Speaker 4: I think, boys, is that all?
[30:55] Speaker 1: Is that all, boys?
[30:57] Speaker 3: That's all I got. I think we'll see what tomorrow
[30:59] Speaker 3: looks like.
[31:01] Speaker 1: That was good.
[31:01] Speaker 4: Yeah, I guess we got to see. Shout out Logan Henderson,
[31:03] Speaker 4: Michael King. It should be a duel. But yeah, thank
[31:06] Speaker 4: you guys for tuning in. I know it's probably, I
[31:08] Speaker 4: guess we might have a lot of Central and Western
[31:10] Speaker 4: time zone viewers, so it's not close to 1 a.m.
[31:12] Speaker 4: for you guys, but for the three of us, it is.
[31:15] Speaker 4: So thank you for watching, and we'll see you tomorrow.
[31:19] Speaker 1: It won't be us.
[31:20] Speaker 4: It won't be the AAA squad. It'll be, I guess,
[31:21] Speaker 4: the big leaguers. So yeah, thank you for watching, and
[31:24] Speaker 4: good night.
