[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome back, friends, to Short Stories for Kids. The Gorilla
[0:18] Speaker 1: Pirate Ship Stephen and Joanna were out playing in the woods.
[0:24] Speaker 1: They'd rode there on their bikes. Why waste a nice
[0:27] Speaker 1: sunny day indoors when you can enjoy it in the countryside?
[0:31] Speaker 1: There were so many fun things to do in the woods.
[0:35] Speaker 1: They could ride their bikes, play chase or hide and seek.
[0:39] Speaker 1: The fun would never end. The pair sat down on
[0:43] Speaker 1: a fallen tree trunk in an opening in the dense
[0:46] Speaker 1: woods and got out their lunches. Stephen had his favorite,
[0:51] Speaker 1: peanut butter and banana sandwiches. Joanna had her favorite, chicken salad.
[0:58] Speaker 1: As they laughed and enjoyed their sandwiches, a sharp breeze
[1:02] Speaker 1: began to blow. The branches on the trees waved this
[1:05] Speaker 1: way and that, and their hair and clothes began to flap.
[1:11] Speaker 1: What's going on? said Stephen. I don't know, cried Joanna.
[1:17] Speaker 1: The odd atmosphere grew stronger and bursts of lightning appeared
[1:22] Speaker 1: from nowhere at the center of the clearing. Suddenly, there
[1:26] Speaker 1: was a huge crack of thunder, and Stephen and Joanna
[1:30] Speaker 1: flew over the tree trunk they were sitting on backward. Ouch,
[1:35] Speaker 1: they both exclaimed. They sat up and looked to where
[1:39] Speaker 1: the thunder had cracked, and neither could believe what they
[1:42] Speaker 1: were witnessing. A huge blue portal of light began to
[1:47] Speaker 1: open up, and from it, the most amazing thing either
[1:51] Speaker 1: had seen came from within it. A giant pirate ship.
[1:56] Speaker 1: A ghostly-looking galleon like something from a history book pushed
[2:00] Speaker 1: from the portal and hovered in the air as if
[2:04] Speaker 1: it were floating on water. That's impossible, Stephen said. How
[2:10] Speaker 1: can it just hover? Joanna added. Their eyes weren't deceiving them.
[2:16] Speaker 1: It was really there. A ginormous wooden pirate ship with
[2:21] Speaker 1: a mast and sails. It didn't make any sense. Then,
[2:27] Speaker 1: on the deck near the mast, a pirate with an
[2:30] Speaker 1: eye patch and a huge hat with a parrot on
[2:33] Speaker 1: top looked down at Stephen and Joanna. Aye, said the pirate.
[2:40] Speaker 1: I not looking to upset you young'uns. Please accept the
[2:43] Speaker 1: apologies of Captain Jack Higgins, the most outlandish of the
[2:48] Speaker 1: space pirates that has ever graced disguise. A space pirate,
[2:55] Speaker 1: Stephen said with excitement. That be true, me lad. Me
[3:00] Speaker 1: and my crew are pirates of both space and time,
[3:04] Speaker 1: going where no man has gone before. Another one of
[3:09] Speaker 1: Captain Jack Higgins' crew came up and whispered in the
[3:13] Speaker 1: captain's ear. What do you mean I can't use where
[3:17] Speaker 1: no man has gone before? The Captain Kirk gave it
[3:21] Speaker 1: up years ago. Space and time? That's amazing, Joanna said.
[3:29] Speaker 1: What are you here for? Some kind of secret mission
[3:32] Speaker 1: that has you traveling all over the universe? Well, not quite, Missy,
[3:38] Speaker 1: Captain Jack Higgins said. We kinda have a little problem
[3:44] Speaker 1: we have to solve. Bring out the monkey, one of
[3:48] Speaker 1: Captain Jack Higgins' crew cried from the back of the
[3:51] Speaker 1: floating galleon. Aye, Captain Jack Higgins cried. Don't call her
[3:58] Speaker 1: a monkey. Call her Kong, the most ferocious beast that
[4:02] Speaker 1: has ever lived. A little rope ladder was thrown over
[4:07] Speaker 1: the side of the ship and a gorilla started to
[4:09] Speaker 1: climb down. Stephen and Joanna hugged each other tight. This
[4:15] Speaker 1: had to be Kong, the most ferocious beast that had
[4:18] Speaker 1: ever lived. But as the furry gorilla turned around... She
[4:23] Speaker 1: had a pink bow in her hair and a dopey
[4:26] Speaker 1: look on her face. She stood there and made monkey noises.
[4:31] Speaker 1: Kong looked at Steven and Joanna and ran over to
[4:35] Speaker 1: them and started rubbing their tummies and playing with their hair.
[4:39] Speaker 1: Then she went to where they had dropped their lunches
[4:42] Speaker 1: and began to eat Steven's peanut butter and banana sandwich.
[4:47] Speaker 1: She's not ferocious, Joanna called to Captain Jack Higgins. She's adorable.
[4:56] Speaker 1: Captain Jack Higgins moaned. Why do I bother? Why do
[5:02] Speaker 1: you have a big friendly gorilla on your space galleon?
[5:06] Speaker 1: Stephen called to Captain Jack Higgins. We picked her up
[5:11] Speaker 1: many moons ago. Old Kong wanted to ride the seven
[5:15] Speaker 1: solar systems with us in Among the Stars. Now the
[5:19] Speaker 1: poor creature be bored of the pirate way of life,
[5:22] Speaker 1: and every day we try and find her a place
[5:25] Speaker 1: she can call home again. Kong finished the sandwich and
[5:29] Speaker 1: grinned up at Captain Jack Higgins. So, what do you think, girl?
[5:35] Speaker 1: Will this be your new home? Kong looked left and
[5:40] Speaker 1: right around the woods, shook her head, then climbed back
[5:44] Speaker 1: aboard the pirate ship. See? She can never find anywhere
[5:49] Speaker 1: she wants to go home. Why do you bother? Why
[5:53] Speaker 1: do you bother? Cried the parrot into Captain Jack Higgins' ear. Oh,
[5:59] Speaker 1: that bird. I'll put you in a banana sandwich. Hey,
[6:05] Speaker 1: Joanna shouted up to Captain Jack Higgins. Why don't we
[6:09] Speaker 1: come aboard and try and help find somewhere that Kong
[6:12] Speaker 1: would like to live? We can come up with some
[6:15] Speaker 1: ideas where you could travel through time to and see
[6:18] Speaker 1: if Kong likes them. Maybe we can go back to
[6:21] Speaker 1: the past when everything was a jungle. Might be a
[6:25] Speaker 1: good idea, Captain, one of the captain's crew said to him.
[6:29] Speaker 1: You haven't had a good idea in years. Get back
[6:34] Speaker 1: to the galley, you scurvy dog, Captain Jack Higgins cried. Okay, kids,
[6:40] Speaker 1: climb aboard and put your thinking caps on. We're going
[6:44] Speaker 1: back to the past. Joanna and Stephen climbed aboard, and
[6:49] Speaker 1: Captain Jack Higgins showed them how the time-traveling pirate ship worked.
[6:54] Speaker 1: There was a big glass dome that looked like an
[6:57] Speaker 1: old-fashioned barometer near the ship's wheel. You turn the little
[7:02] Speaker 1: arrow in her left to go back in time, then
[7:06] Speaker 1: right to go forward, Captain Jack explained. Stephen pushed the
[7:11] Speaker 1: littler arrow left and the pirate ship started to rumble
[7:15] Speaker 1: and sparks and thunder exploded around them. We be off,
[7:21] Speaker 1: Captain Jack Higgins cried. There was a big explosion of light,
[7:27] Speaker 1: and suddenly the pirate ship was flying over a thick jungle. Aye,
[7:33] Speaker 1: said Captain Jack Higgins. This looks like the perfect place
[7:38] Speaker 1: for a creature like Kong. Kong looked over the side
[7:43] Speaker 1: and started to jump excitedly. Looks like you picked a winner, lad,
[7:48] Speaker 1: Captain Jack Higgins said. Then there was a huge crack
[7:53] Speaker 1: of trees being destroyed and a giant T-Rex's head reached
[7:57] Speaker 1: up and snapped at the pirate ship, just missing it.
[8:02] Speaker 1: Shiver me timbers, it's a giant lizard, Captain Jack Higgins cried.
[8:08] Speaker 1: trying to steer the ship up and away from the
[8:11] Speaker 1: big beast. We can't leave Kong here. She'd become a
[8:15] Speaker 1: banana sandwich. Joanna and Steven held on tight as Captain
[8:20] Speaker 1: Jack Higgins pushed the little arrow forward and the pirate
[8:24] Speaker 1: ship shot off into another portal filled with blue lightning.
[8:29] Speaker 1: In a flash, they'd appeared somewhere else. The air was
[8:33] Speaker 1: crisp and clear. and below them were buildings that were
[8:37] Speaker 1: all a sterile white. Where be this strange land? asked
[8:42] Speaker 1: Captain Jack Higgins. Stephen looked at the barometer and replied, Forty-fifty-six!
[8:50] Speaker 1: We're in the future! And what, pray tell, does the
[8:54] Speaker 1: future hold? Captain Jack Higgins said, looking below to the
[8:59] Speaker 1: odd landscape. Kong looked over the side of the ship.
[9:04] Speaker 1: not exactly impressed. This didn't look like any place for
[9:08] Speaker 1: a gorilla. Out of nowhere, a shrieking siren went off. Intruders, intruders, intruders,
[9:16] Speaker 1: please leave our airspace before we deploy our alien space fleet. Quack,
[9:22] Speaker 1: cried Captain Jack Higgins Parrot. Aliens are coming, aliens are coming, quack.
[9:29] Speaker 1: Then from the ground, big flying saucers started to rise
[9:32] Speaker 1: into the air and began flying toward them, firing pink lasers. Ch-ch-ch-ch-choo!
[9:40] Speaker 1: Beam me up, Scotty, Captain Jack Higgins bellowed. We're being
[9:44] Speaker 1: attacked by alien invaders! Kong ducked down and began to
[9:50] Speaker 1: cry in fear. Captain Jack Higgins spun the pirate ship
[9:54] Speaker 1: around and ducked and dodged alien fire. We need to
[10:00] Speaker 1: think of somewhere to take Kong, quickly. Stephen remembered what
[10:05] Speaker 1: he'd been taught in school. Gorillas came from the rainforests
[10:09] Speaker 1: in Africa. He quickly flipped and switched the controls of
[10:14] Speaker 1: the barometer. There was another cracking flash of thunder and
[10:18] Speaker 1: the pirate ship disappeared. All the alien saucers were gone.
[10:25] Speaker 1: Where we be now? Captain Jack Higgins said. They all
[10:30] Speaker 1: looked over the side of the pirate ship. Below was
[10:33] Speaker 1: a huge forest that stretched for miles. There were no
[10:38] Speaker 1: signs of dinosaurs and no sign of aliens. That was good.
[10:44] Speaker 1: Captain Jack Higgins brought the pirate ship to the ground
[10:47] Speaker 1: in a clearing, and Kong climbed down to explore. So, girl,
[10:53] Speaker 1: what do you think? Captain Jack Higgins asked. Then, from
[10:58] Speaker 1: the thick forest, a tribe of gorillas all walked out
[11:02] Speaker 1: to greet Kong. Kong jumped up and down and gave
[11:06] Speaker 1: all of the other gorillas a huge, hairy hug. She
[11:11] Speaker 1: was home. Kong waved up to the crew of the
[11:15] Speaker 1: pirate ship and bellowed a goodbye. The crew, Stephen and Joanna,
[11:20] Speaker 1: all cheered. Kong had finally found a place she could
[11:24] Speaker 1: call home. Well done, well done, cried the parrot. Captain
[11:32] Speaker 1: Jack Higgins took Stephen and Joanna back to their own time,
[11:36] Speaker 1: and for all their help finding Kong, gave them both
[11:39] Speaker 1: a golden coin from his treasure chest. With those there coins,
[11:44] Speaker 1: you can buy whatever your hearts desired. Hearts desired, hearts desired,
[11:51] Speaker 1: cried the parrot. Ah, I don't suppose you want a
[11:56] Speaker 1: free parrot to go along with it, do you? Moaned
[11:59] Speaker 1: Captain Jack Higgins. Joanna and Stephen laughed and laughed. What
[12:05] Speaker 1: a crazy way to end such a crazy day. The
[12:08] Speaker 1: End Thank you.
