[0:00] Speaker 1: And now it's time for today's story request. Hi, Lucy
[0:04] Speaker 1: and Short Stories for Kids crew. We are Genevieve and
[0:07] Speaker 1: Lindley from Arnold, Missouri, USA. And we are premium members. Yay!
[0:12] Speaker 1: We listen every night at bedtime and have done for years.
[0:16] Speaker 1: Genevieve's eighth birthday is October the 30th. And she would
[0:20] Speaker 1: love a shout-out and a story about two girls named
[0:24] Speaker 1: Genevieve and Lindley who wake up to get a midnight snack.
[0:28] Speaker 1: and discover that their plushies have come to life. Well, Genevieve,
[0:32] Speaker 1: I wish you the best eighth birthday in the whole world,
[0:36] Speaker 1: and I hope you and Lindley enjoy your story. Wake up, Genevieve,
[0:52] Speaker 1: gently whispered Lindley into her sister's ear. Genevieve, wake up!
[0:58] Speaker 2: What is it?
[0:59] Speaker 1: Genevieve mumbled as she opened her eyes. What's going on? Nothing,
[1:04] Speaker 1: said Linley quietly as Genevieve sat up in bed. Well, something.
[1:09] Speaker 1: I want a snack. But it's the middle of the night,
[1:15] Speaker 1: pointed out Genevieve as she took in the darkened room.
[1:18] Speaker 1: Haven't you heard of a midnight snack before? asked Linley.
[1:22] Speaker 2: I want one.
[1:23] Speaker 1: Then go get one, said Genevieve. Oh, but Genevieve, it's dark,
[1:29] Speaker 1: and I don't want to wake.
[1:29] Speaker 2: Up, Mom.
[1:30] Speaker 1: Say you'll come with me, please, pleaded Linley. Well, okay,
[1:36] Speaker 1: smiled Genevieve. If you're getting a snack, then I don't
[1:39] Speaker 1: want to miss out. They both giggled at this. This
[1:42] Speaker 1: was going to be great fun. What exactly did you
[1:46] Speaker 1: want to get? Linley knew exactly what she wanted. A cookie,
[1:50] Speaker 1: she said. One of the big ones, with the chucked chips. Oh,
[1:54] Speaker 1: that sounds good, agreed Genevieve as they headed for the door.
[1:58] Speaker 1: I'll have that too. Get one for me, asked a
[2:01] Speaker 1: voice back by the bed. Both girls stopped grabbing at
[2:05] Speaker 1: each other. Neither of them had any idea who had spoken.
[2:09] Speaker 1: Who was that? asked Genevieve. Me, said Fluffy, her favorite
[2:14] Speaker 1: cuddly bear. She had pink material stitched into her ears,
[2:18] Speaker 1: across her nose, and over her paws, with another length
[2:21] Speaker 1: making a pretty scarf. and somehow she was doing something
[2:25] Speaker 1: that she had never done before. Floofy, you can talk,
[2:30] Speaker 1: gasped Genevieve. Well, yes, sorry about that, she replied, shrugging
[2:35] Speaker 1: her shoulders as she raised up her paws. I'm not
[2:39] Speaker 1: supposed to let you hear me do that. And you
[2:42] Speaker 1: can move, said Linley, as she flicked on the bedroom light. Uh, no,
[2:48] Speaker 1: I'm not supposed to let you see that either, wailed
[2:51] Speaker 1: the plushie. and all because I wanted a midnight snack too. Hey,
[2:55] Speaker 1: don't be upset, Floofy, said Genevieve, returning to the bed.
[2:59] Speaker 1: We won't tell anyone. You won't get into trouble because
[3:02] Speaker 1: of us. Yeah, agreed Linley. We'll bring you back a
[3:06] Speaker 1: cookie too, and then we can forget all about it. Oh,
[3:10] Speaker 1: you two are so sweet, sniffled Floofy. Thank you. So
[3:15] Speaker 1: that's three choc-chip cookies coming up, smiled Genevieve.
[3:19] Speaker 2: Um, make that four.
[3:21] Speaker 1: Said another unexpected voice. This time it came from up
[3:24] Speaker 1: on Genevieve's shelf, where another plushie sat. This one was Sparklehoof,
[3:29] Speaker 1: the unicorn. You can talk too, Genevieve yelped with delight. Well, yes,
[3:36] Speaker 1: admitted Sparklehoof. It's a bit late now to pretend otherwise. Oh,
[3:41] Speaker 1: this is amazing, said Linley, a little too loudly. Shh,
[3:46] Speaker 1: hushed Floofy. We can't have your mum coming in here
[3:49] Speaker 1: and Seeing us talking and moving about, there'll be no
[3:52] Speaker 1: end of trouble if that happens. Sorry, Linley said quickly,
[3:57] Speaker 1: although she couldn't stop smiling at this fabulous discovery. Okay,
[4:02] Speaker 1: we'll make sure we'll all keep quiet, said Genevieve. Four
[4:05] Speaker 1: cookies coming right up. Unless that is anyone else wants one,
[4:10] Speaker 1: she said. She said this last comment slowly, in case
[4:14] Speaker 1: any of her other plushies had come alive in the
[4:16] Speaker 1: last few minutes. But nobody spoke. Okay, we'll be right back,
[4:21] Speaker 1: she said at last, turning on the door.
[4:23] Speaker 2: Peanut butter and banana sandwich.
[4:26] Speaker 1: Said a deep voice from the corner.
[4:28] Speaker 2: Please. Mr.
[4:30] Speaker 1: Funky Trunk, you as well, said Genevieve in surprise.
[4:35] Speaker 2: Is it okay to have something different?
[4:38] Speaker 1: Asked the plushy elephant with a flap of his large ears.
[4:42] Speaker 2: I don't really like cookies. The crumbs tickle my nose.
[4:46] Speaker 1: This is crazy, said Linley. Can anyone else move or
[4:50] Speaker 1: talk in here? On the bed, not far from Floofy,
[4:54] Speaker 1: a shaggy dog raised his paw. Do you want us
[4:57] Speaker 1: to bring you back something as well, Puppy Pete? Genevieve asked.
[5:02] Speaker 1: Bag of potato chips, asked the dog hopefully. Let me
[5:06] Speaker 1: get this straight, said Linley, counting off the list on
[5:09] Speaker 1: her fingers. Four cookies, a peanut butter and banana sandwich,
[5:13] Speaker 1: and a bag of potato chips. Is that it? This
[5:16] Speaker 1: is your last chance, warned Genevieve, looking around. If anyone
[5:20] Speaker 1: else in this room wants a midnight snack, they'd better
[5:22] Speaker 1: speak up now. No other toys moved. Come on, Genevieve,
[5:28] Speaker 1: smiled Linley. All this talk of food is making me hungry.
[5:32] Speaker 1: Taking care, they pulled open the bedroom door and almost
[5:35] Speaker 1: tripped over more plushies stood outside. You three as well,
[5:41] Speaker 1: squealed Linley, recognizing three toys from her bedroom. Somehow, she
[5:46] Speaker 1: managed to keep her voice down. There was Odd Socks,
[5:49] Speaker 1: a black and white cat, Snappity, who was a crocodile,
[5:52] Speaker 1: and Hetty the Yeti. Well, I'm sorry, but you're too late.
[5:56] Speaker 1: We just gave everyone a last chance and you didn't
[5:59] Speaker 1: speak up. Oh, that's not fair, complained Hetty the Yeti quietly.
[6:05] Speaker 1: You said, anyone else in the room. Well, we weren't
[6:09] Speaker 1: in the room. We were out here. Yes, which means
[6:12] Speaker 1: we couldn't go shouting or Yes, which means we couldn't
[6:16] Speaker 1: go shouting or nothing like that, said Snappity. Otherwise we'd
[6:20] Speaker 1: have woken up your mama. Genevieve ushered the three newcomers
[6:24] Speaker 1: into the room and pushed the door closed. Okay, okay,
[6:28] Speaker 1: you're right, she agreed. You three can have a midnight
[6:31] Speaker 1: snack too. Oh, goody, purred Old Socks. Can I get
[6:35] Speaker 1: a bowl of ice cream, asked Hedy the Yeti. And
[6:39] Speaker 1: a spoon, you need a spoon to eat ice cream. Well,
[6:42] Speaker 1: I guess so, said Linley. The list was getting complicated.
[6:45] Speaker 1: A slice of the pizza for me, said Snappity with
[6:49] Speaker 1: a lick of his lips. Uh, okay, nodded Genevieve. She
[6:53] Speaker 1: was reasonably sure she'd seen a slice in the fridge.
[6:56] Speaker 1: And what about you, Oddsocks? The cat gazed up hungrily. Mmm, tuna,
[7:02] Speaker 1: she said, clapping her paws together. Or salmon, if you've
[7:06] Speaker 1: got it. Well, I don't know, began Genevieve. Hey, we'll
[7:11] Speaker 1: do our best, said Linley. That's all we can do.
[7:14] Speaker 1: Isn't that right, Genevieve? Yeah, you're right, agreed her sister.
[7:19] Speaker 1: So that's four cookies, a peanut butter and banana sandwich,
[7:22] Speaker 1: a bag of potato chips, a bowl of ice cream
[7:24] Speaker 1: with a spoon, a slice of pizza and some tuna.
[7:28] Speaker 1: Or salmon, added Odd Socks helpfully. Or salmon, repeated Genevieve,
[7:34] Speaker 1: reaching for the door handle. And maybe a drink, asked Fluffy. Ooh,
[7:40] Speaker 1: I'd like a drink, said Fluffy Truck. And me, said Snappity. Hey,
[7:45] Speaker 1: drinks for everyone, said Genevieve. That's easier. Wait, said Linley.
[7:50] Speaker 1: What now, Genevieve asked, looking around for another talking plushie.
[7:56] Speaker 1: How are we going to carry all of that, Linley asked.
[7:59] Speaker 1: Not unreasonably, even with two of them, it was a lot.
[8:03] Speaker 1: You're right, nodded Genevieve. We need to keep the trips
[8:07] Speaker 1: in and out of the bedroom to a minimum. Otherwise,
[8:09] Speaker 1: we're going to disturb Mom. Then what can we do?
[8:14] Speaker 1: asked Linley. It won't be fair if we only bring
[8:16] Speaker 1: some of the things back. No, it won't be fair,
[8:20] Speaker 1: agreed Genevieve. So we'll just have to try another way.
[8:23] Speaker 1: Which was why, a short time later, everyone was spread
[8:27] Speaker 1: out on a blanket on the kitchen floor. Not so
[8:30] Speaker 1: much a midnight snack as a midnight picnic. The girls
[8:34] Speaker 1: each had their cookies, as did Floofy the teddy bear
[8:37] Speaker 1: and Sparklehoof the unicorn.
[8:39] Speaker 2: Mr.
[8:40] Speaker 1: Funky Truck was tucking into his peanut butter and banana sandwich.
[8:43] Speaker 1: And Puppy Pete had his nose in a bag of
[8:45] Speaker 1: potato chips that was almost as big as he was.
[8:48] Speaker 1: Hedy the Yeti was pushing her spoon into her bowl
[8:51] Speaker 1: of ice cream. while Snappity was enjoying a freshly warmed
[8:55] Speaker 1: slice of extra cheesy pizza. Even Oddsocks was happy as
[8:59] Speaker 1: a tin of tuna had been found in the cupboard.
[9:02] Speaker 1: What's more, everyone had a drink, too. Miraculously, they'd all
[9:06] Speaker 1: somehow managed to keep their voices at a whisper during
[9:09] Speaker 1: the whole thing. Um, hi, everyone, said a timid voice
[9:13] Speaker 1: from the kitchen door. It was Mayberry the monkey, one
[9:17] Speaker 1: of Linley's plushies. Can I join? she asked softly. Sure
[9:22] Speaker 1: you can, said Genevieve kindly.
[9:24] Speaker 2: Come on over.
[9:25] Speaker 1: Um, but can I bring a friend, asked the monkey.
[9:30] Speaker 1: Of course, smiled Genevieve. Just make sure they know to
[9:33] Speaker 1: be quiet, okay? Oh, she knows, said Mary Berry as
[9:38] Speaker 1: she led her friend into the kitchen by her hand. Mom,
[9:42] Speaker 1: shrieked the girls. Yikes, yelped Floofy.
[9:46] Speaker 2: What does she want?
[9:48] Speaker 1: Well, the girl's mom said with a grin. Like you,
[9:52] Speaker 1: I was rather hoping for a midnight snack. The End
[10:21] Speaker 1: Thank you.
[11:00] Speaker 2: Thank you.
