[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome back, friends, to Short Stories for Kids. Every Halloween,
[0:18] Speaker 1: something strange happened in the little town of Wobblewick. One year,
[0:23] Speaker 1: all the pumpkins grew mustaches. Another year, the ghosts went
[0:27] Speaker 1: on strike because nobody was screaming at them. And last Halloween,
[0:31] Speaker 1: the town's vampire accidentally turned himself into a potato. But
[0:36] Speaker 1: this year? This year was going to be the strangest
[0:40] Speaker 1: Halloween ever. Because at exactly 7 o'clock, the moon fell
[0:45] Speaker 1: out of the sky and landed inside a pumpkin. Splat!
[0:49] Speaker 1: Holy guacamole! That was Oliver Pickle, age 10, professional troublemaker
[0:56] Speaker 1: and owner of the world's most embarrassing Halloween costume. His
[1:00] Speaker 1: mother had dressed him as a giant Brussels sprout. I'm
[1:04] Speaker 1: supposed to be a zombie! But Oliver had bigger problems now.
[1:09] Speaker 1: In the middle of Mrs. Crumble's pumpkin patch sat an enormous,
[1:12] Speaker 1: glowing pumpkin. And from inside it came a very angry voice.
[1:18] Speaker 1: Excuse me! Would somebody mind explaining why I'm inside a vegetable?
[1:23] Speaker 1: Oliver blinked. Um, hello? Hello? Hello? Hello? I'm the moon!
[1:29] Speaker 1: I control the tides! I light up the night! And
[1:32] Speaker 1: now I smell like pumpkin soup! Oliver leaned closer. How
[1:36] Speaker 1: did you fall out of the sky? I sneezed. Oliver stared.
[1:42] Speaker 1: You sneezed? Yes! A witch flew past with a bag
[1:45] Speaker 1: of pepper, and I sneezed so hard I fell off
[1:48] Speaker 1: my orbit! Oliver scratched his head. Can moons even sneeze? Apparently!
[1:54] Speaker 1: And that was when things got considerably worse. Because without
[1:58] Speaker 1: the moon in the sky, every Halloween monster in Wobblewick
[2:02] Speaker 1: began behaving very strangely. First, the werewolves turned into poodles. Then,
[2:08] Speaker 1: the vampires started craving tomato juice. And finally, every skeleton
[2:13] Speaker 1: in town began dancing. Not spooky dancing. Not scary dancing.
[2:19] Speaker 1: Disco dancing. Outside the supermarket, 12 skeletons were doing the Macarena.
[2:24] Speaker 1: A skeleton wearing sunglasses shouted, Somebody turn up the music!
[2:29] Speaker 1: My bones are ready to boogie! Oliver groaned. This is
[2:33] Speaker 1: going to be a long night. Oliver knew exactly who
[2:37] Speaker 1: could fix this disaster. Madam Wigglybottom. She was Wobblewick's oldest witch,
[2:43] Speaker 1: although nobody knew exactly how old she was. Some said 300.
[2:47] Speaker 1: Some said 500. Madam Wigglybottom claimed she was 29. She
[2:52] Speaker 1: also claimed that eating spiders made your hair shiny. Oliver
[2:57] Speaker 1: wasn't convinced about either. Her cottage stood at the edge
[3:00] Speaker 1: of the forest, surrounded by purple mushrooms, singing pumpkins, and
[3:05] Speaker 1: a garden gnome who shouted insults at passing squirrels. Get
[3:09] Speaker 1: a job, you fluffy little freeloaders! Oliver knocked. The door
[3:15] Speaker 1: flew open. Bang! Who dares disturb Madam Wigglybottom during her bath?
[3:21] Speaker 1: Oliver froze. The witch was wearing a shower cap, enormous slippers,
[3:27] Speaker 1: and a dressing gown covered in dancing bats. Sorry, but
[3:31] Speaker 1: the moon fell into a pumpkin. Madam Wigglybottom blinked. Then
[3:36] Speaker 1: she screamed. Not again! Oliver frowned. Again? Oh yes, dear.
[3:43] Speaker 1: Happened in 1842. Terrible business. We had to use a
[3:47] Speaker 1: giant spoon. A spoon? And a very large ferret! Oliver
[3:52] Speaker 1: decided not to ask. Madam Wigglybottom grabbed her broomstick. Come along!
[3:58] Speaker 1: We must save Halloween! She leapt onto the broom. Oliver
[4:02] Speaker 1: climbed on behind her. The broom rose three inches, made
[4:06] Speaker 1: a horrible farting noise, and dropped them straight into a bush. Broomhilda!
[4:13] Speaker 1: How dare you! The broomstick burped. Oliver picked leaves out
[4:18] Speaker 1: of his hair. Does your broom always do that? Only
[4:21] Speaker 1: when she's eaten beans. By the time Oliver and Madam
[4:25] Speaker 1: Wigglybottom reached the pumpkin patch, the situation was completely out
[4:29] Speaker 1: of control. The werewolf poodles were chasing their own tails,
[4:34] Speaker 1: a vampire was arguing with a tomato, and the skeletons
[4:37] Speaker 1: had formed a boy band called the Bony Boys. One, two, three, four,
[4:43] Speaker 1: shake your bones across the floor! Oliver covered his ears.
[4:47] Speaker 1: Please make them stop. Madam Wigglybottom examined the enormous glowing pumpkin. Inside,
[4:54] Speaker 1: the moon was complaining. It's very sticky in here, and
[4:58] Speaker 1: something keeps tickling my craters! The witch nodded seriously. Yes, yes,
[5:04] Speaker 1: very complicated. She opened her enormous spellbook. Pages fluttered everywhere. Ah,
[5:11] Speaker 1: here we are! To return a fallen moon to the sky,
[5:14] Speaker 1: we require three things. Oliver leaned forward. Which are? One,
[5:20] Speaker 1: a ghost's hiccup. Right. Two, a vampire's sock. Okay. And three,
[5:27] Speaker 1: the biggest burp in the history of Halloween. Oliver stared.
[5:32] Speaker 1: Are you making this up? Madam Wigglybottom slammed the book shut.
[5:36] Speaker 1: Young man, I am a professional. Then she looked at
[5:40] Speaker 1: the book again. Oh, wait, that's a recipe for exploding
[5:45] Speaker 1: pumpkin pudding. Oliver sighed. Of course it is. They needed
[5:50] Speaker 1: another plan. Madam Wigglybottom remembered an ancient spell involving a ghost,
[5:56] Speaker 1: a cauldron, and a magical trampoline. Luckily, Wobblewick had all three.
[6:02] Speaker 1: The ghost was called Sir Booington Flapwhistle. He lived in
[6:05] Speaker 1: the haunted library and was supposed to be terrifying. Unfortunately,
[6:10] Speaker 1: he had one problem. He couldn't stop giggling. Boo! Sorry,
[6:16] Speaker 1: I just remembered a funny joke. Oliver crossed his arms.
[6:21] Speaker 1: We need your help. Ooh, is it a party? Sort of.
[6:25] Speaker 1: The moon stuck in a pumpkin. Sir Booington gasped. Then
[6:29] Speaker 1: he laughed so hard he floated upside down. The moon
[6:35] Speaker 1: in a pumpkin! Oh, that's brilliant! Madam Wigglybottom waved her wand.
[6:42] Speaker 1: Enough giggling! We must prepare the trampoline. They dragged the
[6:46] Speaker 1: enormous magical trampoline into the pumpkin patch. It belonged to
[6:50] Speaker 1: a troll named Kevin. Kevin was eight feet tall, bright green,
[6:55] Speaker 1: and wore tiny pink ballet shoes. Hey guys, you borrowing
[6:59] Speaker 1: my bouncy thing? Oliver nodded. We need to bounce the
[7:02] Speaker 1: moon back into the sky. Kevin grinned. Awesome! Can I help? Sure.
[7:08] Speaker 1: Can I do a backflip? Maybe later. Can I eat
[7:11] Speaker 1: the trampoline? No! Kevin looked disappointed. The entire town gathered
[7:16] Speaker 1: around the pumpkin patch. The skeletons stopped dancing. The werewolf
[7:20] Speaker 1: poodles stopped barking. Even the vampires put down their tomato juice.
[7:25] Speaker 1: Madam Wigglybottom climbed onto a hay bale. Citizens of Wobblewick,
[7:30] Speaker 1: tonight we shall return the moon to its rightful place.
[7:34] Speaker 1: Everybody cheered. Oliver raised his hand. Um, how? The witch
[7:39] Speaker 1: pointed at Kevin. The troll will lift the pumpkins. Kevin
[7:43] Speaker 1: flexed his enormous muscles. Yes! The ghost will float beneath it,
[7:49] Speaker 1: Sir Booington saluted. Boo! And Oliver will activate the magical trampoline.
[7:55] Speaker 1: Oliver swallowed. How do I activate it? Madam Wigglybottom smiled
[8:00] Speaker 1: by shouting the ancient magical words, which are... She leaned
[8:05] Speaker 1: close and whispered. Oliver stared at her. Seriously? Seriously! He
[8:11] Speaker 1: climbed onto the trampoline, took a deep breath, and shouted,
[8:15] Speaker 1: Wibbly wobbly pumpkin bottom! The trampoline began to glow. Kevin
[8:21] Speaker 1: lifted the enormous pumpkin. Sir Booington floated underneath it. The
[8:26] Speaker 1: pumpkin shook. The moon shouted, I don't like the sound
[8:30] Speaker 1: of this! Oliver bounced once. Boing! Twice. Boing! Boing! Three times. Boing!
[8:40] Speaker 1: And suddenly... The pumpkin exploded! Not into pieces, into thousands
[8:46] Speaker 1: and thousands of tiny orange butterflies. They fluttered across the
[8:51] Speaker 1: sky like a magical Halloween snowstorm. And the moon? The
[8:55] Speaker 1: moon shot upward like a giant silver cannonball. It flew
[9:01] Speaker 1: past the church, past the clouds, past a very surprised owl.
[9:06] Speaker 1: Good heavens! And finally, pop! it landed perfectly back in
[9:11] Speaker 1: the sky. For one beautiful moment, everything was silent. Then
[9:17] Speaker 1: the moon spoke. Well, that was deeply unpleasant. The entire
[9:22] Speaker 1: town erupted into cheers. The werewolf poodles turned back into
[9:26] Speaker 1: proper werewolves. The vampires remembered they preferred blood to tomato juice.
[9:31] Speaker 1: And the skeletons, well, the skeletons were still dancing, but
[9:36] Speaker 1: that was probably because they really liked disco. Oliver smiled.
[9:40] Speaker 1: We did it! Madam Wigglybottom patted his shoulder. Indeed we did,
[9:45] Speaker 1: young Brussels Sprout. Oliver groaned. Please don't call me that.
[9:50] Speaker 1: Kevin the Troll started crying. That was beautiful! I love
[9:55] Speaker 1: happy endings! Sir Buington blew his nose into a tissue,
[9:59] Speaker 1: which was rather pointless because the tissue fell straight through him.
[10:03] Speaker 1: Everybody laughed. Then the moon cleared its throat. Before everybody
[10:08] Speaker 1: goes home, I have one small announcement. The town fell silent.
[10:14] Speaker 1: As a thank you for rescuing me, I've decided to
[10:17] Speaker 1: grant Wobblewick one very special Halloween wish. Oliver's eyes widened.
[10:23] Speaker 1: Any wish? Any wish. Oliver thought carefully. He could wish
[10:27] Speaker 1: for a mountain of sweets, a lifetime supply of chocolate,
[10:31] Speaker 1: a pet dragon, or perhaps a new Halloween costume that
[10:35] Speaker 1: didn't make him look like a vegetable. Then he grinned.
[10:39] Speaker 1: I wish everyone leaned closer, that every pumpkin in Wobblewick
[10:43] Speaker 1: could talk. Madam Wigglybottom gasped, Oliver, no! But it was
[10:49] Speaker 1: too late. The moon flashed bright silver. Whoosh! Every pumpkin
[10:54] Speaker 1: in town opened its eyes, and its mouth, and began talking. Hello!
[10:59] Speaker 1: One particularly enormous pumpkin shouted, I like cheese! I demand
[11:04] Speaker 1: a pizza! Oliver burst out laughing. The pumpkins began arguing,
[11:10] Speaker 1: then singing, then telling terrible jokes. Why did the pumpkin
[11:15] Speaker 1: cross the road? Another pumpkin shouted, Why? Because it was
[11:19] Speaker 1: tired of being squashed. All the pumpkins laughed. Ha ha
[11:23] Speaker 1: ha ha ha! Madam Wigglybottom buried her face in her hands. Oh, wonderful.
[11:31] Speaker 1: Talking vegetables. That's exactly what this town needed. Oliver grinned.
[11:37] Speaker 1: Best Halloween ever! And high above Wobblewick, the moon smiled.
[11:42] Speaker 1: Silly humans. Then it sneezed. Ah! Choo! The entire town froze.
[11:51] Speaker 1: Oliver looked up. Madam Wigglybottom looked up. Kevin the Troll
[11:56] Speaker 1: looked up. And the moon whispered. Oh dear. The end.
[12:26] Speaker 1: Thank you.
