[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome back, friends, to Short Stories for Kids. Sammy's Ninja
[0:19] Speaker 1: Story It was a sleepy Friday at school, and Sammy
[0:25] Speaker 1: sat at her desk watching the clock. Wow. Will school
[0:30] Speaker 1: ever come to an end? She thought, staring at the
[0:34] Speaker 1: hands on the clock as they ticked slow ticks and
[0:37] Speaker 1: talked slow talks. Sammy had been waiting for the weekend
[0:43] Speaker 1: to come. She had something super special planned, but it
[0:47] Speaker 1: felt like the hands on the clock were going backward.
[0:51] Speaker 1: Would school ever come to an... The bell went and
[0:55] Speaker 1: all her classmates shot up towards the door. And somehow, Sammy,
[0:59] Speaker 1: who was the last to get up, managed to zip
[1:02] Speaker 1: past all of them and was the first out. She
[1:06] Speaker 1: ran to her locker, grabbed her books, and was so
[1:10] Speaker 1: fast she was the first one out of the school.
[1:14] Speaker 1: The school bus was waiting, but what was the point
[1:17] Speaker 1: in catching it? She could beat it home all day long.
[1:21] Speaker 1: Sammy ran along the sidewalk, jumping left and right, avoiding
[1:26] Speaker 1: old ladies and yapping dogs. There were two guys moving
[1:30] Speaker 1: a couch at the end of the street, totally in
[1:33] Speaker 1: her way. So Sammy jumped on a fire hydrant, then
[1:38] Speaker 1: flipped up and through the air, twisting and turning before
[1:42] Speaker 1: she landed on the opposite side of the two guys
[1:45] Speaker 1: carrying the couch and ran so fast she was a blur.
[1:51] Speaker 1: What was that? Earl, one of the two guys carrying
[1:55] Speaker 1: the couch, exclaimed. Must have been some kind of bird,
[1:59] Speaker 1: said Tony, the other guy. That ain't no bird. Did
[2:04] Speaker 1: you see the way it landed? No bird lands like that,
[2:08] Speaker 1: Earl said. Maybe it used a sparrow chute, shrugged Tony,
[2:13] Speaker 1: letting go of the couch so it fell on Earl's toe. Yow!
[2:18] Speaker 1: Sammy looked behind and laughed. There was no time for silliness.
[2:23] Speaker 1: She had a very important job to do. Sammy shot
[2:28] Speaker 1: through the door to her house. Her mom almost spun
[2:31] Speaker 1: on the spot, holding the laundry basket tight so she
[2:34] Speaker 1: didn't drop all the clean clothes inside. Sammy, her mom
[2:40] Speaker 1: cried after her. No running in the house. Sorry, mom.
[2:45] Speaker 1: When Sammy got to her room, she quickly changed from
[2:48] Speaker 1: her school clothes into her all-black uniform. Sammy had a
[2:54] Speaker 1: secret she'd never told her parents. She was a ninja.
[2:59] Speaker 1: Last year, her parents had sent her to summer school.
[3:02] Speaker 1: But it wasn't just any school. It was the Adjnan
[3:07] Speaker 1: School for Children. And Adjnan, spelt backwards, was ninja. It
[3:13] Speaker 1: was a secret ninja school. Now Sammy was fluent in
[3:17] Speaker 1: the ancient arts of the ninja. and the Adjnan school
[3:21] Speaker 1: had a special mission for her. Sammy pulled on her
[3:26] Speaker 1: black headband, closed her eyes, and clapped her hands together.
[3:31] Speaker 1: The clap echoed out, vibrating so loud her closet door
[3:35] Speaker 1: flew open and a portal began to appear out of
[3:39] Speaker 1: thin air. Then Sammy said, It's time to run! It's
[3:44] Speaker 1: time to fight! Send me on a ninja adventure tonight!
[3:50] Speaker 1: Then the portal grew bigger, and with a flying kick,
[3:54] Speaker 1: Sammy shot through the air into an unknown world. On
[3:58] Speaker 1: the other side of the portal was a great green
[4:01] Speaker 1: jungle filled with giant trees. Sammy ran as fast as
[4:06] Speaker 1: she could. She had to meet her partner for her adventure. There,
[4:12] Speaker 1: through the green emerald jungle, was a shining pool of
[4:15] Speaker 1: silvery water, and at its edge … a girl floated,
[4:20] Speaker 1: looking left and right. When the girl saw Sammy, a
[4:25] Speaker 1: huge grin appeared on her face. You made it, said
[4:29] Speaker 1: the girl. Ninjas are always on time, Sammy said, skidding
[4:35] Speaker 1: to a stop next to the girl, giving her an
[4:38] Speaker 1: authoritative nod. So, what's the plan, Aja? I found a
[4:43] Speaker 1: secret tunnel under the sea, Aja replied. It will take
[4:48] Speaker 1: us straight to Ryland the Dragon's lair. That's where he
[4:52] Speaker 1: keeps his gold. That's great, cried Sammy. Will it be dangerous? Well,
[5:01] Speaker 1: pondered Aja. There might, kinda, sorta, be giant squid monsters.
[5:11] Speaker 1: Giant squid monsters? Sammy gasped. But they won't hurt us
[5:16] Speaker 1: if we're quiet. I'm sure of it. Sammy thought about this. Okay,
[5:22] Speaker 1: she replied. Let's do it. Sammy flipped through the air
[5:27] Speaker 1: and landed in the water. I'll lead the way, Aja
[5:31] Speaker 1: said boldly, turning over in the water so her big
[5:34] Speaker 1: mermaid's tail flipped water up in the air. Sammy always
[5:39] Speaker 1: thought being a mermaid must be so cool. Aja flew
[5:44] Speaker 1: through the water at top speed. Sammy held her breath
[5:48] Speaker 1: and followed. They made it deep to the bottom of
[5:52] Speaker 1: the pool's floor, and Aja pointed to a cave they
[5:55] Speaker 1: had to go through. Aja quickly swam ahead, and Sammy followed.
[6:02] Speaker 1: They swam up and down and around tight, twisting, cavernous tunnels. Luckily,
[6:08] Speaker 1: there were little pockets of air Sammy could gulp a
[6:11] Speaker 1: few breaths before continuing. Eventually, they made it into deeper,
[6:17] Speaker 1: darker water. Sammy thought it was really scary, but Aja
[6:23] Speaker 1: didn't care. She just swooshed her tail as she led
[6:26] Speaker 1: the way. Over there, Aja said, bubbles floating from her mouth.
[6:33] Speaker 1: That's where Rylan... Aja never finished her sentence. A pair
[6:38] Speaker 1: of big, rubbery tentacles reached from the dark water and
[6:43] Speaker 1: wrapped around the two girls. Oh no! It's a giant
[6:47] Speaker 1: squid monster! The big, creepy creature gripped the two girls
[6:52] Speaker 1: tightly and brought them to its giant, staring eyes. They
[6:57] Speaker 1: both tried to wiggle free, but neither of the girls
[7:00] Speaker 1: could escape the beast's mighty clutches. A human and a
[7:06] Speaker 1: mermaid so small and smelly, growled the squid monster. It's
[7:13] Speaker 1: time to go inside my belly. The two girls cried out.
[7:20] Speaker 1: Then Sammy used her ninja powers to fight back. She
[7:24] Speaker 1: shot up and out of the squid's grip, spun around
[7:27] Speaker 1: three times and did a flying kick right between its eyes. Ow!
[7:34] Speaker 1: cried the squid monster. Beating up a squid isn't big
[7:39] Speaker 1: and tough. I'm out of here. You girls play too rough. Then,
[7:47] Speaker 1: fleeing in fear, the squid monster shot off into the
[7:51] Speaker 1: dark ocean. Let's get out of here, Aja suggested, and
[7:56] Speaker 1: the pair swam up deeper into the secret passageway where
[8:00] Speaker 1: Rylan the dragon was. They bobbed up in a vast,
[8:05] Speaker 1: watery chamber, and all the walls shone from a shaft
[8:08] Speaker 1: of light that poured from a crack above. This is it,
[8:13] Speaker 1: Aja remarked. Rylan's secret chamber. Where is the gold? wondered Sammy.
[8:21] Speaker 1: As they peered into the gloomy space, they both soon understood.
[8:27] Speaker 1: The reason the walls were shining was because gold coins
[8:30] Speaker 1: were embedded in them. Wow, gasped Sammy. There's gold everywhere.
[8:38] Speaker 1: I'll run up and pull the coins free and throw
[8:41] Speaker 1: them down to you. Then we can take them back
[8:43] Speaker 1: to the ninja school where they belong. Right, Aja nodded.
[8:49] Speaker 1: Sammy jumped from the water and ran so fast, grabbing
[8:52] Speaker 1: gold coins, her clothes began to dry on her body.
[8:57] Speaker 1: She tossed coins down to Aja, who caught them and
[9:00] Speaker 1: hid them in a little backpack she'd brought for the adventure.
[9:04] Speaker 1: As Sammy ran and yanked free the coins, a huge,
[9:08] Speaker 1: scary voice bellowed around the cave. Stealing coins. Taking them
[9:16] Speaker 1: for free. You, my girl, will have to deal with me.
[9:23] Speaker 1: The two girls looked up. And in the dark corner
[9:26] Speaker 1: of the cave, Ryland, the great red dragon, had his
[9:30] Speaker 1: wings spread wide. Ryland spewed down a huge gust of
[9:35] Speaker 1: his fiery breath, illuminating the cave with orange light. Run,
[9:41] Speaker 1: Sammy cried as fire lapped behind her. Aja ducked down
[9:46] Speaker 1: into the water and Sammy jumped from side to side
[9:49] Speaker 1: of the cave, escaping the dangerous flames. Why do you
[9:54] Speaker 1: people want to take my gold? Ryland bellowed. It's our gold.
[10:01] Speaker 1: You stole it from my ninja school, Sammy replied as
[10:05] Speaker 1: she ran. That's not true, Ryland replied. A sneaky ninja
[10:13] Speaker 1: stole it from me many years ago, and I simply
[10:18] Speaker 1: stole it back. It had been so long, the ninjas
[10:23] Speaker 1: have forgot the truth. I only took the gold back
[10:28] Speaker 1: for my poor dragon children. We live in this cave
[10:32] Speaker 1: because people think we are big, mean dragons and want
[10:37] Speaker 1: to attack us. Then, when we defend ourselves, they say
[10:42] Speaker 1: we are big, bad beasts. When really, all I want
[10:47] Speaker 1: to do is protect my children. Dragon children? Sammy asked,
[10:54] Speaker 1: stopping running and holding her hands up in retreat. Aja
[10:58] Speaker 1: bobbed back up to the surface to listen. From the
[11:02] Speaker 1: corner of the cave, three little cute dragons came waddling out.
[11:07] Speaker 1: These are my three children, Ryland said. I use the
[11:13] Speaker 1: gold to buy them dragon toys and dragon food. It
[11:18] Speaker 1: was unfair when the ninja stumbled on my gold and
[11:23] Speaker 1: took it as their own, so I had to steal
[11:27] Speaker 1: them back. Sammy never knew this side of the story
[11:32] Speaker 1: and felt foolish she hadn't taken the time to learn
[11:35] Speaker 1: what really happened with the gold. Sammy and Aja talked
[11:40] Speaker 1: and agreed that the gold should stay with Ryland to
[11:42] Speaker 1: help his dragon children. For the rest of the afternoon,
[11:47] Speaker 1: Sammy and Aja played with Ryland and the dragon children
[11:51] Speaker 1: and had a wonderful time. What shall we tell the
[11:56] Speaker 1: other ninja? Aja asked Sammy. Sammy thought about it. We'll
[12:02] Speaker 1: have to tell them the gold has sunk into the
[12:04] Speaker 1: bottom of the ocean, that it's so deep no one
[12:08] Speaker 1: could ever get it ever again. Thank you, snorted Ryland.
[12:14] Speaker 1: You have saved my children. That night, Sammy and Aja
[12:20] Speaker 1: traveled back to the portal to Sammy's home. You did
[12:25] Speaker 1: the right thing today, helping the dragons, Aja said. Sometimes
[12:30] Speaker 1: you need to know all sides of a story before
[12:33] Speaker 1: you take a side yourself, Sammy replied. Just because someone
[12:38] Speaker 1: says something is right, sometimes you have to find out
[12:42] Speaker 1: if it's right yourself. I know the dragons need the
[12:45] Speaker 1: gold more than the ninja. And when we said they
[12:49] Speaker 1: can keep it, you could see how happy it made them.
[12:53] Speaker 1: That was the right thing to do. With that, Aja
[12:57] Speaker 1: and Sammy hugged, and Sammy jumped back through the portal
[13:00] Speaker 1: to her own world, happy in the knowledge the dragons
[13:04] Speaker 1: would have a happy life with her decision. The End
[13:30] Speaker 1: Thank you.
