[0:00] Speaker 1: Welcome back friends to short stories for kids. The Cat
[0:25] Speaker 1: and the Cake. Shiloh was a farm cat. Like all cats,
[0:30] Speaker 1: she divided her time between lazing in the sunshine, snoozing
[0:35] Speaker 1: somewhere soft, and sleeping before the fireplace. It was she
[0:40] Speaker 1: thought a good life. One evening, while Shiloh was curled
[0:44] Speaker 1: up near the warm stove, the farmer came in after
[0:47] Speaker 1: shutting up the animals for the night. She stamped her
[0:51] Speaker 1: boots and shook off her jacket and slumped down into
[0:54] Speaker 1: a tatty old chair in the corner of the kitchen. Oh,
[0:58] Speaker 1: what a busy day, puffed the farmer. Shiloh, never one
[1:03] Speaker 1: to miss out on a warm lap, leapt up onto
[1:06] Speaker 1: the farmer's knees and settled down atop her thighs, purring contentedly.
[1:11] Speaker 1: And I suppose you've done nothing but be lazy, smiled
[1:15] Speaker 1: the farmer. You cats have it so easy. Shiloh stopped
[1:19] Speaker 1: her purring as the farmer rubbed her behind the ear.
[1:23] Speaker 1: Had the farmer just called her lazy? Well, you can't
[1:28] Speaker 1: have my warm lap just yet, continued the farmer. My
[1:32] Speaker 1: busy day isn't over. I've still got two more animals
[1:35] Speaker 1: to feed me. And you. She stood up, spilling the
[1:40] Speaker 1: cat out onto the floor as she made to prepare
[1:42] Speaker 1: the meals. Normally, Shiloh would trot eagerly at her ankle,
[1:47] Speaker 1: excited for her dinner, but tonight she hung back thinking
[1:51] Speaker 1: about what the farmer had said. Was she lazy? Did
[1:56] Speaker 1: she really have it easy? These thoughts troubled her as
[2:00] Speaker 1: she watched the farmer cook and then clean up, and
[2:03] Speaker 1: the cat was still thinking about it long after the
[2:05] Speaker 1: farmer had gone to her bed, before the sun had
[2:09] Speaker 1: risen or the cockrel crowed the farmer was up. On
[2:13] Speaker 1: most mornings, Shiloh would pay little attention as the farmer
[2:16] Speaker 1: had her hasty breakfast before starting her day. But today
[2:21] Speaker 1: the cat watched everything the farmer did, right up until
[2:24] Speaker 1: she pulled on her boots, slipped on her jacket, and
[2:27] Speaker 1: left to begin her chores. I've never even noticed it before,
[2:32] Speaker 1: but the farmer works very hard, said the cat out
[2:36] Speaker 1: loud to the empty kitchen. No wonder she thinks I
[2:39] Speaker 1: have it easy. Anyone would look lazy when compared to her.
[2:44] Speaker 1: She does so much for all the animals of the farm,
[2:47] Speaker 1: especially me. Perhaps the time has come for me to
[2:51] Speaker 1: do something for her. The question, however, was what Shiloh's
[2:57] Speaker 1: eyes fell upon. An old cookbook sat gathering dust upon
[3:01] Speaker 1: the old kitchen dresser with a bound from floor to chair.
[3:05] Speaker 1: It was then a short hop to where the book sat.
[3:07] Speaker 1: Propped up With care, the cat pulled it forward, allowing
[3:12] Speaker 1: the pages to fall open upon the dresser's top. The
[3:16] Speaker 1: page revealed a picture of a magnificent Victoria sponge cake. Ah,
[3:22] Speaker 1: said Shiloh with satisfaction. A cake. That's what I'll do.
[3:26] Speaker 1: I'll bake the farmer a cake. She deserves a cake
[3:30] Speaker 1: for all that she does, and then she'll see that
[3:33] Speaker 1: I'm not lazy. Beside the picture of the Victoria sponge
[3:37] Speaker 1: was a list of ingredients and instructions of what to do.
[3:41] Speaker 1: It looks as if the first thing that I'll need
[3:43] Speaker 1: are four eggs, said the cat, And fortunately I know
[3:48] Speaker 1: just where to find some. Shiloh left the farmhouse, crossing
[3:52] Speaker 1: the yard to the chicken coop. Outside the coop, a
[3:56] Speaker 1: chicken was pecking in the dirt. Good morning, announced cat. Cheerfully,
[4:01] Speaker 1: May I trouble you for four of your fabulous eggs? Please?
[4:05] Speaker 1: Four eggs, repeated the chicken. Why would a cat need
[4:09] Speaker 1: four eggs? I'm going to bake a cake, grinned Shiloh. Happily,
[4:15] Speaker 1: it's going to be for the farmer, as a thank
[4:17] Speaker 1: you for all the things that she does for us.
[4:20] Speaker 1: What a good idea, agreed the chicken. The farmer's always
[4:25] Speaker 1: busy racing here and there to get her chores done.
[4:28] Speaker 1: I'll gladly give you four eggs for your cake. The
[4:32] Speaker 1: chicken led the cat into the coop and they rummaged
[4:35] Speaker 1: amongst the straw until four speckled brown eggs had been found.
[4:39] Speaker 1: Four eggs are a lot to carry, said Shiloh. I
[4:43] Speaker 1: wouldn't want to break one. Then let me help you,
[4:47] Speaker 1: said the chicken. We can carry two each. This they did,
[4:52] Speaker 1: returning to the farmhouse kitchen to lay them out on
[4:55] Speaker 1: the wide wooden table. Let me see what else I need,
[4:59] Speaker 1: said Shiloh, jumping up onto the dresser to read the cookbook.
[5:03] Speaker 1: The chicken flapped up beside her. Ah, said the cat.
[5:07] Speaker 1: I'm going to need some milk. WHOA, that's just perfect,
[5:12] Speaker 1: said the delighted chicken. We can get milk here on
[5:15] Speaker 1: the farm. You're right, smiled the cat and the unlikely
[5:19] Speaker 1: pair headed back to the yard. They crossed to the
[5:23] Speaker 1: cow shed, where a large brown cow was in conversation
[5:27] Speaker 1: with a snowy white goose. Good morning, announced the cat. Cheerfully,
[5:32] Speaker 1: May I trouble you for some of your milk? Please milk,
[5:37] Speaker 1: repeated the cow. My milk isn't for you, cat, It's
[5:41] Speaker 1: for the farmer. But that's precisely who I need it for,
[5:46] Speaker 1: explained Shiloh. I'm going to bake her a cake as
[5:50] Speaker 1: a thank you for all the things that she does
[5:52] Speaker 1: for us. What a marvelous idea, agreed the goose. The
[5:57] Speaker 1: farmer's work is never done. A cake is is exactly
[6:00] Speaker 1: what she deserves. The brown cow nodded, I shall, gloody
[6:06] Speaker 1: give you some milk for your cake, she said, use
[6:10] Speaker 1: the bucket in my stall. Shiloh and the chicken pushed
[6:14] Speaker 1: the bucket under the cow's utters, filling it half way
[6:17] Speaker 1: with her milk. But now the bucket was too awkward
[6:21] Speaker 1: for the cat or chicken to move. The bucket is
[6:25] Speaker 1: too big and heavy to carry, said Shiloh. I wouldn't
[6:29] Speaker 1: want to spill it. Then let me help you, said
[6:33] Speaker 1: the goose. I'm bigger than you two. I can manage it.
[6:37] Speaker 1: This worked nicely, allowing them to return to the farmhouse
[6:40] Speaker 1: kitchen and set the milk down beside the wide wooden table.
[6:45] Speaker 1: What's next, asked the chicken. Butter, said the cat, reading
[6:50] Speaker 1: from the book. Where will we get that in the dairy,
[6:55] Speaker 1: said the goose. It's where the farmer turns her butter
[6:58] Speaker 1: from the cow's milk. Then what are we waiting for?
[7:02] Speaker 1: Laughed Shiloh, leaping for the floor. The dairy was built
[7:06] Speaker 1: onto the side of the cow shed, but when they
[7:09] Speaker 1: got there they found the door was closed. Bother said Shiloh,
[7:14] Speaker 1: how will we get butter if we can't get inside.
[7:18] Speaker 1: It's not locked, said a pig from the nearby sty.
[7:22] Speaker 1: The door is old and warped, so there's a gap
[7:25] Speaker 1: near the floor that you can get your nose into
[7:28] Speaker 1: to pull it open. How would you know this, asked
[7:32] Speaker 1: the goose. Oh well, said the guilty looking pig. When
[7:37] Speaker 1: no one's looking, I like to see if the dairy
[7:41] Speaker 1: has anything that needs eating. I can't open this door
[7:45] Speaker 1: with my nose, complained Shiloh, nor me with my beak,
[7:50] Speaker 1: said the chicken. I can't either, said the goose, after
[7:54] Speaker 1: giving it a try. What do you need to get
[7:58] Speaker 1: into the dairy for anyway? Asked the pig. I know
[8:02] Speaker 1: I'm not supposed to go into the dairy, so I'm
[8:05] Speaker 1: quite sure. It's no place for a cat, a chicken
[8:09] Speaker 1: or a goose. It's for the farmer. It's for the
[8:14] Speaker 1: farmer that we need to get in, explained Shiloh. I'm
[8:18] Speaker 1: going to bake her a cake as a thank you
[8:20] Speaker 1: for all the things that she does for us. Well,
[8:23] Speaker 1: that's very sweet of you, said the pig. The farmer
[8:27] Speaker 1: is very good to us all. A cake is exactly
[8:31] Speaker 1: what she deserves. Here, let me help you with some difficulty,
[8:36] Speaker 1: The pig nudged open the door to his sty, then
[8:40] Speaker 1: did the same with the door to the dairy. Inside,
[8:43] Speaker 1: they could smell butter inside a large wooden churn. That
[8:48] Speaker 1: churn is too big for me to move, said Shiloh,
[8:52] Speaker 1: even with the help of a chicken and a goose.
[8:56] Speaker 1: Then let me help you, said the pig. I'm big
[9:00] Speaker 1: or the knoll of you. Let me roll it for you,
[9:03] Speaker 1: gently tipping the wooden churn on to its side. They
[9:07] Speaker 1: headed back to the farmhouse kitchen to stand the churn
[9:10] Speaker 1: upright beside the wide wooden table. We're doing well, said
[9:15] Speaker 1: the chicken, as Shiloh inspected the cookbook. We'll also need sugar, flour,
[9:21] Speaker 1: baking powder, and strawberry jam, said the cat. Will we
[9:26] Speaker 1: find those out on the farm. I don't think so,
[9:31] Speaker 1: grunted the pig. I seem to remember the farmer making
[9:35] Speaker 1: jam many months ago and putting them in that high cupboard,
[9:40] Speaker 1: said Shiloh, pointing with her paw. But how will we
[9:44] Speaker 1: get up there, asked the goose. It's too high for
[9:47] Speaker 1: any of us. I have an idea, said the cat,
[9:51] Speaker 1: and led them all back into the yard. This time
[9:55] Speaker 1: they went to the stable, where a dappled horse gazed
[9:59] Speaker 1: down at them. Good morning, announced Shiloh, cheerfully. May I
[10:04] Speaker 1: trouble you for some help? Please help, repeated the horse.
[10:09] Speaker 1: My strength isn't for you, cat, It's for the farmer.
[10:13] Speaker 1: But that's precisely who I need it for, explained Shiloh.
[10:18] Speaker 1: I'm going to bake her a cake as a thank
[10:20] Speaker 1: you for all the things that she does for us.
[10:24] Speaker 1: Is that so? Said the horse, sounding impressed. The farmer
[10:29] Speaker 1: is nothing but kind to me. A cake is exactly
[10:32] Speaker 1: what she deserves. I shall be glad to help you.
[10:36] Speaker 1: The group of animals returned to the kitchen, where the
[10:39] Speaker 1: horse hooked open the cupboard door with its teeth. This
[10:43] Speaker 1: not only revealed several jars of strawberry jam, but sugar,
[10:47] Speaker 1: flour and baking powder too. What all this, asked the goat,
[10:53] Speaker 1: poking his head around the door. A duck, a sheep,
[10:57] Speaker 1: and the brown cow were with him. I'm going going
[11:00] Speaker 1: to bake the farmer a cake, said Shiloh, as a
[11:03] Speaker 1: thank you for all the things that she does for us.
[11:06] Speaker 1: Then you must let us help, insisted the goat. I
[11:11] Speaker 1: shall find a mixing bowl. Er. Now I'll get a spoon,
[11:15] Speaker 1: quacked the duck. The kitchen was now full of animals
[11:18] Speaker 1: squeezed around or on the wide wooden table. But try
[11:24] Speaker 1: as they might, paws, hooves, and beaks are no match
[11:28] Speaker 1: for a pair of human hands, and the squeeze of
[11:32] Speaker 1: animals meant that everyone was in someone else's way. Watch
[11:37] Speaker 1: what you're doing with those eggs, demanded the chicken. Mind
[11:42] Speaker 1: that flour, grumbled the sheep. Get your foot out of
[11:46] Speaker 1: the milk, complained the cow. It was just at that
[11:50] Speaker 1: moment that the farmer arrived back for her lunch. Quite understandably,
[11:56] Speaker 1: she looked more than a little stunned by the sight
[11:59] Speaker 1: before her. Eye. Most of her animals were in her kitchen,
[12:03] Speaker 1: amongst scattered sugar, spilt milk, smeared strawberry jam, cracked eggs,
[12:09] Speaker 1: and a billowing cloud of flour. The animals all stared
[12:15] Speaker 1: back at her, caught in the act. My goodness, said
[12:19] Speaker 1: the farmer, as her eyes fell upon Shiloh stood over
[12:22] Speaker 1: the cookbook. The cat looked the guiltiest of them all.
[12:27] Speaker 1: So the farmer squeezed past the horse, stepped over the pig,
[12:31] Speaker 1: and took a look at the cookbook's open page. Ah,
[12:36] Speaker 1: she said, at last, I think I understand what's going
[12:39] Speaker 1: on here. Right all of you into the yard. The
[12:43] Speaker 1: animals wasted no time in doing as they'd been asked,
[12:47] Speaker 1: but didn't stray far. They gathered at the doorway to
[12:51] Speaker 1: watch the farmer clean up their mess. Once done, she
[12:55] Speaker 1: went to the fridge, removed milk and butter, and got
[12:58] Speaker 1: to work. Only while the cake was in the oven
[13:01] Speaker 1: did she return to her chores on the farm, returning
[13:05] Speaker 1: a short while later to finish it off. There, she said,
[13:09] Speaker 1: presenting the finished Victoria sponge to the assembled farm animals,
[13:14] Speaker 1: And there's enough slices for all of us. The animals
[13:18] Speaker 1: got to eat theirs in the yard, although Shiloh was
[13:21] Speaker 1: allowed to curl up on the farmer's lap upon the
[13:24] Speaker 1: kitchen chair. You meant well, Shiloh, said the farmer kindly,
[13:29] Speaker 1: even if you did create even more work for me
[13:32] Speaker 1: to do. Now I must get on. Still plenty of
[13:36] Speaker 1: work to do before the day is done. She rose
[13:39] Speaker 1: from the chair and left, leaving Shiloh to watch her go.
[13:44] Speaker 1: I guess that worked out all right in the end,
[13:47] Speaker 1: said the chicken, pecking at the last of her cake crumbs.
[13:51] Speaker 1: Oh we're not down yet, said Shiloh to the assembled animals.
[13:56] Speaker 1: I've just had an amazing idea. Who would like to
[13:59] Speaker 1: help help me make the farmer her dinner?
