## Transcript

[0:01] Speaker 1: The volume, well, the Colin Coward podcast. We are live
[0:12] Speaker 1: with my buddy John Middlecoff. We usually do these on
[0:14] Speaker 1: Sunday night after the NFL Games, but at the Volume,
[0:18] Speaker 1: we signed a contract with Live Golf, which I've been
[0:21] Speaker 1: a supporter of from day one, and I called Middlecoff
[0:23] Speaker 1: and I said, get out here to Chicago.
[0:26] Speaker 2: So last night we got dehydrated.
[0:28] Speaker 1: I'll leave it at that, and today we're at bowling
[0:31] Speaker 1: Brook Country Club out in the burbs in Chicago. It's
[0:35] Speaker 1: a beautiful course and we are at the.
[0:37] Speaker 2: Live Golf event.
[0:38] Speaker 1: I had friends and acquaintances who had said, you got
[0:41] Speaker 1: to go to one of these tournaments, like it's a
[0:43] Speaker 1: real experience. And the first thing that jumps out to
[0:47] Speaker 1: you because we literally were you know, Brooks Kopka's coming up,
[0:50] Speaker 1: shaking our hand, coming over, the access to Dustin Johnson,
[0:56] Speaker 1: Sergio Garcia, Phil Mickelson.
[0:58] Speaker 2: It's just different. It's a real thing. You know.
[1:00] Speaker 3: Kepka sure knows that you're a supporter because he came
[1:03] Speaker 3: right over.
[1:03] Speaker 4: He doesn't smile. Offen had big smile.
[1:05] Speaker 3: This is I've been to a lot of golf events,
[1:08] Speaker 3: US opens, PGA Tour events.
[1:11] Speaker 2: This the vibe here.
[1:12] Speaker 3: The energy is unlike this is more like a I
[1:15] Speaker 3: don't know, an SEC football game or something.
[1:17] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean there's a huge crowd here today, So
[1:19] Speaker 1: it is a big crowd. And I think my takeaway is,
[1:24] Speaker 1: and I've always kind of believed this, you got to
[1:25] Speaker 1: get out of the studio. You gotta go to events,
[1:28] Speaker 1: Like I tell people, you know, I remember I used
[1:31] Speaker 1: to work with a guy, Mark Shapiro, and I said,
[1:34] Speaker 1: we were talking one time at Wimbledon actually, and I said,
[1:37] Speaker 1: my mom was British. I always loved Wimbledon, right, I
[1:40] Speaker 1: always watched it. But he'd never been to an SEC game,
[1:43] Speaker 1: and he was very really really young, And I say,
[1:45] Speaker 1: you just got to go.
[1:46] Speaker 2: You gotta go to Baton Rouge.
[1:47] Speaker 1: If you don't know what it's like during a football game,
[1:49] Speaker 1: you can smell the bourbon and when you come to
[1:51] Speaker 1: one of these events, I mean, it just jumps out
[1:53] Speaker 1: to you. First of all, they've take golf rich history.
[1:58] Speaker 1: There was always going to be pushback anything new in golf.
[2:00] Speaker 1: We've seen it in baseball. We all knew the game
[2:03] Speaker 1: had to get faster, right, We knew base and so
[2:06] Speaker 1: it took people pushback on the pitch clock well, the
[2:08] Speaker 1: minute they did it, the sports attendants and ratings went out.
[2:11] Speaker 2: I get why there was pushback would live I get it.
[2:15] Speaker 1: But what they've done is basically found obvious stuff that
[2:18] Speaker 1: golf can and probably should tweak to get a younger audience,
[2:22] Speaker 1: and it works.
[2:24] Speaker 4: It definitely works in person.
[2:25] Speaker 3: I mean it's a vibe here for sure, but they
[2:28] Speaker 3: you know one thing they got going for him right now.
[2:29] Speaker 3: I mentioning this on the driving range Steph Curry, what
[2:33] Speaker 3: he did for basketball the interest of young people. You
[2:35] Speaker 3: can go to any arena now when Steph's playing. I
[2:38] Speaker 3: don't care the Lakers, You're gonna see Steph Curry, Jerseys.
[2:41] Speaker 3: Bryson's kind of become that he is just a young
[2:44] Speaker 3: hip YouTube's been huge for him. People want to see him.
[2:48] Speaker 3: The other thing is we're on the first tea the leaderboard.
[2:50] Speaker 3: In this tournament. Brooks Kepkas won five majors. I mean
[2:53] Speaker 3: he knocked off people like Tiger Woods who tried to
[2:56] Speaker 3: beat him. Phil Mickelson's won six majors. One of the
[2:58] Speaker 3: most legendary players ever have some star power. I was
[3:01] Speaker 3: telling you Terrell Hatton, who is going to be one
[3:04] Speaker 3: of the superstars on the Ryder Cup for the international
[3:06] Speaker 3: team for years to come. Like he goes Rory Rum
[3:09] Speaker 3: and he's right there. So I mean they got I
[3:13] Speaker 3: mean when they built this thing. You know, golf's very
[3:15] Speaker 3: dependent like like basketball on the Stars, yes, you know.
[3:18] Speaker 2: Outside of maybe Augusta.
[3:19] Speaker 3: Yeah, and they got and they got a lot of
[3:21] Speaker 3: Sergio Garcia won the Masters. You know, Patrick Reid won
[3:24] Speaker 3: the Masters. So they got a lot of accomplished golfers
[3:27] Speaker 3: out of here, for sure.
[3:28] Speaker 2: You know, it's funny.
[3:29] Speaker 1: It was interesting because I would say about four or
[3:31] Speaker 1: five years ago, I was a huge Dustin Johnson fan
[3:33] Speaker 1: and he's one of those and I saw him in
[3:35] Speaker 1: person today.
[3:35] Speaker 2: I mean he was three feet from us.
[3:37] Speaker 4: Look like an NFL quarterback.
[3:38] Speaker 1: He's big, I mean he is Dustin's he's a big
[3:41] Speaker 1: he's a professional athlete. But his game is fascinating because
[3:45] Speaker 1: there was there was a time, I mean such a
[3:48] Speaker 1: mental game. There were about four years ago with Dustin Johnson.
[3:51] Speaker 1: I thought he was going to take over the sport.
[3:52] Speaker 1: And there are still times I watch him on the
[3:55] Speaker 1: Live Tour and I'm like, he's really a dynamic, power,
[4:00] Speaker 1: full player. But for some reason, and that's I think
[4:02] Speaker 1: that's the beauty of golf and the burden of it. Like,
[4:05] Speaker 1: what's where is Dustin Johnson?
[4:07] Speaker 3: Now?
[4:08] Speaker 2: Well, I mean kind.
[4:09] Speaker 3: Of I would stay on the definitely on the back
[4:11] Speaker 3: nine of his career, probably on whole sixteen seventeen eighteen.
[4:13] Speaker 3: I mean, he had a run where he won a
[4:15] Speaker 3: PJ Tour event. I think in like twelve straight years.
[4:18] Speaker 3: I think, looking back, he's one of those guys. You know,
[4:19] Speaker 3: Brooks got the five majors, Phil's got six majors. You
[4:22] Speaker 3: look back on DJ's career, I bet he's kicking himself.
[4:25] Speaker 3: He probably should have had six or seven and he's
[4:27] Speaker 3: probably gonna end up with two now.
[4:28] Speaker 4: He did win the Masters, which definitely changed his life.
[4:30] Speaker 3: I mean, there was that one remember when Fox bought
[4:33] Speaker 3: the US Open and DJ three putted and Jordan Speed
[4:36] Speaker 3: ended up winning a Chambers Bay You're home stomping round.
[4:39] Speaker 2: So I think he's one of.
[4:41] Speaker 3: Those careers where you just look back and I mean
[4:44] Speaker 3: it's been incredible. He's one of the most accomplished golfers
[4:46] Speaker 3: of his era, and he's one of the most talented
[4:48] Speaker 3: because you see him.
[4:50] Speaker 4: I think with golf, I.
[4:51] Speaker 3: Guess football is a little like this guy's come in
[4:53] Speaker 3: different shapes and sizes, but Dustin stands out amongst everybody,
[4:57] Speaker 3: even next to Phil.
[4:58] Speaker 4: He trumps them, you know, by three four inches.
[5:01] Speaker 2: I mean I watched six golfers, he looked six to six.
[5:03] Speaker 2: I mean he's massive.
[5:04] Speaker 1: Of all the six golfers, I saw that Te Doff today, Mickelson, Brooks, Kepka,
[5:08] Speaker 1: Sergio had Matton, there was no question Dustin sounded different.
[5:15] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean he is.
[5:16] Speaker 1: He is just a big He's a professional athlete.
[5:19] Speaker 2: So but I think that, you know what. The other
[5:22] Speaker 2: thing that struck.
[5:23] Speaker 1: Me today is that when I you get access to
[5:27] Speaker 1: the driving range, like really close, and we got a
[5:29] Speaker 1: little closer than the fans, maybe five feet. But when
[5:34] Speaker 1: I turned around and I looked at the audience, much
[5:38] Speaker 1: younger audience than you would see.
[5:40] Speaker 2: And there's always been young golf fans.
[5:42] Speaker 1: But if you watch the gallery at the US Open
[5:44] Speaker 1: or Augusta, it's forty five fifty five, there's a lot
[5:50] Speaker 1: of twenty three twenty eight year old kids out here.
[5:53] Speaker 3: I mean you come out here to hang out as
[5:54] Speaker 3: a party. That's most golf events. I live by one
[5:58] Speaker 3: in Phoenix. They're not usually parties. So I mean this
[6:02] Speaker 3: is this is my first time in Chicago. I've always
[6:04] Speaker 3: heard it's an event, party kind of atmosphere. You can
[6:07] Speaker 3: tell people gravitate toward fun stuff here, festivals, music's big
[6:12] Speaker 3: year events, and this is this is an event. I mean,
[6:15] Speaker 3: it's one of those that you got to be here
[6:17] Speaker 3: to kind of feel it, you know. I mean that
[6:19] Speaker 3: music blasts on whole one.
[6:21] Speaker 2: That was crazy.
[6:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, so they had paratroopers come in. They got music
[6:24] Speaker 1: blasting on the first hole. And I also think, I mean,
[6:27] Speaker 1: I've only been in Chicago full time now for about
[6:29] Speaker 1: four months, but when you have a city with a
[6:32] Speaker 1: harsh winter, when the sun comes.
[6:35] Speaker 2: Out, people they're got in their car. They'll drive two out.
[6:37] Speaker 2: They don't care.
[6:38] Speaker 1: That's why music. That's why they just had something here
[6:40] Speaker 1: the air day in town.
[6:41] Speaker 2: I don't even know. It was a Lalla what was
[6:43] Speaker 2: the Lalla Palouza? That's things still real, right.
[6:46] Speaker 1: It had a massive begones as I was a kid,
[6:50] Speaker 1: they had a massive crowd here and it's like, yeah,
[6:52] Speaker 1: because for four months you can't get out of the house.
[6:55] Speaker 1: So when you have this event, I mean, this is
[6:57] Speaker 1: a big crowd.
[6:58] Speaker 3: I've been hearing about the Chicago summers for it's still hot.
[7:01] Speaker 3: You know, people act like it's like seventy degrees, you know.
[7:03] Speaker 2: I mean it's it's warm. I mean we got lucky
[7:05] Speaker 2: today though, cool place.
[7:06] Speaker 4: Yeah we win, we got great.
[7:07] Speaker 2: It's not good to the golfers. Man looks terrible.
[7:09] Speaker 4: Feel's already all over the place.
[7:11] Speaker 1: Yeah no, the I think wait, listen, we have to
[7:16] Speaker 1: at least address for a minute Shador Sanders. Yeah, okay,
[7:20] Speaker 1: it's the podcast, right. We got a couple of topics here.
[7:22] Speaker 1: So before he got drafted, he debuted last night. My
[7:27] Speaker 1: take was always big enough, accurate enough, moves well enough.
[7:31] Speaker 2: When I watched last night, he checked those boxes.
[7:34] Speaker 1: I don't know if he's going to be good pre snap,
[7:36] Speaker 1: is he mature enough. But when I watched them last night,
[7:39] Speaker 1: that was an event. By the way, speaking of an
[7:40] Speaker 1: event at the liv golf that was an event last night.
[7:43] Speaker 1: When I watched him, he was kind of what he
[7:45] Speaker 1: was in college. He's accurate, he moves well enough. There's
[7:49] Speaker 1: so many other boxes to check to be a franchise quarterback.
[7:52] Speaker 1: But my take was he delivered. He was what he
[7:55] Speaker 1: was in college.
[7:55] Speaker 3: I think the one thing with preseason, because hard to
[7:57] Speaker 3: put it on context, Like, I don't know if you're
[7:59] Speaker 3: going up against the next Tran Williams or the next
[8:01] Speaker 3: guy that's gonna be selling insurance a month, right, so
[8:04] Speaker 3: you gotta be careful with that. You can judge instincts,
[8:07] Speaker 3: and you can just judge this guy can play football. Now,
[8:11] Speaker 3: the game plan the regular season is a different animal
[8:14] Speaker 3: than the preseason. But Shador has always just kind of
[8:17] Speaker 3: been an instinctive. He's never met his dad athletically, right,
[8:20] Speaker 3: He's not the most explosive athlete. He doesn't have the
[8:22] Speaker 3: greatest arm, but he kind of just makes him plays. Now,
[8:25] Speaker 3: you know, are they gonna throw him at Week one?
[8:26] Speaker 3: They're not gonna do that. But this was always like
[8:29] Speaker 3: once he started dropping in the draft, someone took him
[8:32] Speaker 3: if he looked good. It wasna be kinda it's gonna
[8:34] Speaker 3: be a circus. I mean it's you thought it was big. Now,
[8:36] Speaker 3: can you imagine Cleveland radio this week? They're not gonna
[8:40] Speaker 3: want to see one snap from Flacco. No one's gonna
[8:42] Speaker 3: want to see Flacco take us. Yeah, no one's gonna
[8:44] Speaker 3: want to see Kenny Fick. It's a very t bow feel,
[8:47] Speaker 3: but he's much better than t bow, way better. I
[8:48] Speaker 3: mean he's a quarterback, right TBA. This guy's a court
[8:51] Speaker 3: now can he be a good quarterback? And this is
[8:53] Speaker 3: where if I'm the owner, listen, I'll give you a
[8:55] Speaker 3: month because as the head coach, you can't just walk
[8:57] Speaker 3: into Miles Garrett. If Miles goes, I don't think quite
[9:00] Speaker 3: ready yet and not play the veteran guy. But if
[9:02] Speaker 3: we're one in three, one and four, I'm making the
[9:05] Speaker 3: switch quicker than some teams do. Remember like when Lamar
[9:08] Speaker 3: came in for Flaco, it was like the end of October.
[9:10] Speaker 4: I'm not waiting that long. Yeah, you want to give
[9:12] Speaker 4: this guy to me?
[9:14] Speaker 3: If I'm Haslam, I'm already like at minimum, let's get
[9:17] Speaker 3: like ten games. We got two first round picks. If
[9:19] Speaker 3: we're bad anyway, we're gonna be drafted the quarterback. Let's
[9:21] Speaker 3: get a big sample size. Who knows, maybe we don't
[9:23] Speaker 3: keep them, we can flip them.
[9:25] Speaker 1: Yeah, absolutely So, John and I'll be doing our stuff tomorrow.
[9:28] Speaker 1: Obviously on Sunday night, a lot of NFL stuff, little
[9:30] Speaker 1: teaser there. So as I watched Phil Mickelson, John and
[9:33] Speaker 1: I went to the first tea and they got the paratroopers,
[9:36] Speaker 1: and you know, there's you know, fireworks.
[9:39] Speaker 2: Michelson. First of all, he was in really good shape.
[9:42] Speaker 2: It looks good, and.
[9:43] Speaker 1: He was the most popular golfer here. He was really popular.
[9:46] Speaker 1: But it was interesting because when I watched Phil.
[9:51] Speaker 4: He's probably my generation's Arnold Palmer or something doing.
[9:54] Speaker 2: I think so.
[9:57] Speaker 1: Phil now is not yet Greg Norman, but it kind
[10:00] Speaker 1: of feels like he's a businessman has filed. I mean
[10:04] Speaker 1: by the way he is the attraction. I like he
[10:06] Speaker 1: is really He and Bryson are and golf has always
[10:09] Speaker 1: had a great legacy. It loves its old stars, right.
[10:12] Speaker 1: But when I watched Phil today, He's in the best
[10:14] Speaker 1: shape I've ever seen, and I'm kind of wondering. I'm thinking,
[10:17] Speaker 1: because you're next to me, I'm kind of thinking.
[10:18] Speaker 2: Where are we with Phil? Do we expect him to win?
[10:21] Speaker 2: Do we? Or is it just like.
[10:24] Speaker 1: It's like when musical acts their last eight years would
[10:27] Speaker 1: go to Vegas and they couldn't quite hit the notes,
[10:30] Speaker 1: but you wanted to go watch Barry Manilo Like, no,
[10:34] Speaker 1: he's not. I'm not saying that, but there is a
[10:36] Speaker 1: part of me with Phillip's like I don't really care
[10:37] Speaker 1: how he plays.
[10:38] Speaker 3: I just want to see Phil Mickelson. Well, he's fifty five.
[10:40] Speaker 3: He's probably never gonna win another major. I mean he
[10:43] Speaker 3: won one a couple of years ago a Kiwa. That
[10:44] Speaker 3: was one of the coolest things. I think he's one
[10:46] Speaker 3: of the oldest players to ever win a major. I
[10:48] Speaker 3: forget the exact staty might he was fifty years old
[10:50] Speaker 3: and fifty five to still be this good. You could
[10:53] Speaker 3: make the argument that he's the greatest fifty five year.
[10:55] Speaker 4: Old golfer in the history of the sport.
[10:57] Speaker 3: You know, relative, is he gonna beat Bryson and kept
[10:59] Speaker 3: going with great?
[11:00] Speaker 1: No?
[11:01] Speaker 3: The Masters is the one place because they play there
[11:03] Speaker 3: every year and he's exempt for life being a champion.
[11:06] Speaker 2: I think two years.
[11:06] Speaker 3: Ago I think he finished second. So now is he
[11:09] Speaker 3: gonna win the event? I wouldn't bet. Is he gonna
[11:11] Speaker 3: take out Scotti, Scheffler or Bryson at there on? Probably not,
[11:14] Speaker 3: But that is one event where he can get hot.
[11:16] Speaker 3: I think he could top ten there again in his
[11:18] Speaker 3: late fifties. That is an incredib book. Remember what a
[11:20] Speaker 3: big deal was in the mid eighties when Jack won
[11:22] Speaker 3: at forty six years old.
[11:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, so for people, are people are in better shape now?
[11:26] Speaker 2: For sure?
[11:27] Speaker 3: They eat better, right, Philip's great. I mean he looks
[11:29] Speaker 3: way better than he did when he was my age.
[11:30] Speaker 3: I mean, I a thirties early forties.
[11:32] Speaker 2: No, so is Phil's about six two. Yeah.
[11:34] Speaker 1: So I looked at him today and I'm I'm six
[11:37] Speaker 1: to one and I'm a buck ninety and Phil's bigger
[11:41] Speaker 1: than I am. And I looked at him. I'm like,
[11:44] Speaker 1: he's six two two oh eight. I mean Phil's big,
[11:48] Speaker 1: I mean a hips big. And I looked at him,
[11:50] Speaker 1: I'm like, Phil's him good. And he had a tight
[11:52] Speaker 1: gulf shirt. I'm like, that's the best shape Phil's ever
[11:54] Speaker 1: been in.
[11:55] Speaker 4: You know, bones, Phil's old cat. Yeah, I heard him
[11:57] Speaker 4: say this once.
[11:58] Speaker 3: He's like, you know, when you look at Phil relative
[12:00] Speaker 3: a lot of these guys, you know, kept his battle
[12:01] Speaker 3: knee injuries. Bryson had a back when he got Bighill's
[12:04] Speaker 3: never had an injury. When you look at his swing,
[12:06] Speaker 3: because I don't know if it's his flexibility, his swing
[12:09] Speaker 3: kind of looks identical as it did twenty years ago.
[12:11] Speaker 3: He swings, and you know, power is a big part
[12:14] Speaker 3: of his game, kind of a unique a lot of
[12:15] Speaker 3: these guys. The nature of the swing, it's not a
[12:18] Speaker 3: normal human moment baseball players left handers. Yeah, it looks better.
[12:22] Speaker 3: It looks fantastic, you know so I yeah, I mean
[12:25] Speaker 3: he's never been injured, still playing, you know, relatively. Again,
[12:28] Speaker 3: you you top five at the Masters in your fifties,
[12:32] Speaker 3: like that's it probably happened, I don't know, less than
[12:34] Speaker 3: two times in the history of the game.
[12:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, it's it's really fun here. It's really an event.
[12:39] Speaker 1: I mean they first of all, it's incredibly well staffed.
[12:43] Speaker 1: You know how when you have different leagues sometimes you're like,
[12:45] Speaker 1: well it's a shoe string budget.
[12:47] Speaker 2: That's not the case. I don't think budget's the issue.
[12:50] Speaker 1: It is not the issue. No, they have and I'm
[12:54] Speaker 1: sure they have this everywhere, but I.
[12:56] Speaker 3: Think the key and they know what they're doing is
[12:58] Speaker 3: going to cities did or party fun places and it's
[13:02] Speaker 3: gonna work. You know. I think they had an event
[13:03] Speaker 3: earlier in Arizona and Tucson. I don't know if it
[13:06] Speaker 3: was last year or this year. They've been they've gone
[13:08] Speaker 3: to Australia. When they go to places that are fun,
[13:11] Speaker 3: I mean the atmosphere will be there won't be anything
[13:13] Speaker 3: like that.
[13:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean I didn't know because where I live
[13:17] Speaker 1: in Chicago. This is about an hour ten drive. So
[13:19] Speaker 1: I was thinking, no, look at a decent crowd, but
[13:21] Speaker 1: you got to get in your car and commit to it,
[13:23] Speaker 1: and then you have to commit coming home. And I
[13:24] Speaker 1: was like, we had traffic, like real traffic. And I
[13:27] Speaker 1: got here and I looked at the first hole, I'm like,
[13:29] Speaker 1: oh shit, this is a real crowd, Like this is
[13:31] Speaker 1: a real this is something and I think the one
[13:35] Speaker 1: thing and this is not because first of all, watching
[13:39] Speaker 1: Rory when the Masters is about I said it on
[13:41] Speaker 1: the air, that was like four and a half hours
[13:43] Speaker 1: the best.
[13:44] Speaker 2: TV of my life.
[13:44] Speaker 1: Like I watching Tiger when he got old with them,
[13:46] Speaker 1: there's nothing like the traditional British Open.
[13:49] Speaker 2: I mean, I love filming the PGA a couple of
[13:51] Speaker 2: years ago.
[13:52] Speaker 1: You can really like two things at the same time.
[13:54] Speaker 1: It's like I was never when I first defended Live,
[13:57] Speaker 1: my take it away was, Guys, if I say your
[14:01] Speaker 1: favorite part of golf, you're either going to say it's
[14:04] Speaker 1: the Masters, which isn't run by the PGA.
[14:07] Speaker 2: That's not a.
[14:07] Speaker 1: Shot at THEAPGA was a charity that didn't run the
[14:09] Speaker 1: US Open, the British Augusta. So my take is always
[14:13] Speaker 1: I've always been loyal to the golfer. I wanted to
[14:16] Speaker 1: see Phil and Bryson and Kopka. I wanted to see
[14:20] Speaker 1: the golfer today. But I also understood the pushback by
[14:23] Speaker 1: traditionalists because outside of baseball, it's probably the most tradition
[14:27] Speaker 1: rich sport.
[14:29] Speaker 2: But when you watch today, one of the things that
[14:31] Speaker 2: jumps out to me.
[14:33] Speaker 1: As I grew up in a small town, we didn't
[14:35] Speaker 1: have country clubs. I've always felt like an outsider in golf,
[14:39] Speaker 1: even though I've gotten the bug in the last three years.
[14:42] Speaker 1: When you're here, it kind of feels like they took
[14:44] Speaker 1: that veneer and they pulled it off. They said, just
[14:46] Speaker 1: get close to the golfers. And I think that's something
[14:49] Speaker 1: that golf for younger generations.
[14:51] Speaker 2: I think it works.
[14:52] Speaker 3: I think one thing that I'm big on is on
[14:56] Speaker 3: Sunday is everyone having the same rotation of whole. And
[15:00] Speaker 3: I didn't know, I don't know if they've been doing this,
[15:02] Speaker 3: but staggering the.
[15:03] Speaker 4: First team with multiple groups, so those six guys instead
[15:06] Speaker 4: of one.
[15:07] Speaker 3: You know, the winner might finish on whole three because
[15:09] Speaker 3: he started on whole you know two this you know
[15:12] Speaker 3: they're going multiple groups off one that means they're all
[15:14] Speaker 3: going to finish on eighteen. Like I like seeing the
[15:16] Speaker 3: guys come down fifteen sixteen, seventeen, but Phil kept all
[15:19] Speaker 3: those guys went.
[15:20] Speaker 2: Off whole one.
[15:21] Speaker 3: So I like the way that they do that, the
[15:23] Speaker 3: stagger tea on, you know, with the leaders, multiple groups.
[15:27] Speaker 2: The.
[15:30] Speaker 1: It's just it was really interesting today when Brooks Kepka
[15:33] Speaker 1: came over to us.
[15:35] Speaker 3: He likes you, Colin, I seemit a supporter. No, I's
[15:37] Speaker 3: a sports guy. I was a huge Keopka guy.
[15:40] Speaker 1: Did not like the Shamba for the first two years
[15:42] Speaker 1: and the thirteen egg omelets and then Bryce and I
[15:46] Speaker 1: thought got very likable. He kind of a little more human,
[15:50] Speaker 1: a little more humble.
[15:52] Speaker 4: Well, Brooks embrace them, h Brooks embrace them their buddies.
[15:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, and so it was like okay, and then Brooks
[15:58] Speaker 1: I think struggled with an injury. But Brooks and it
[16:03] Speaker 1: just it just it doesn't matter what business it is.
[16:05] Speaker 1: It could be politics, it can be golf. Deshambo is
[16:08] Speaker 1: an aggressive guy and it's just sort of his personality,
[16:11] Speaker 1: whereas Brooks is. But I think, if I had to guess,
[16:16] Speaker 1: he's probably super private, Yes, really private. So like you
[16:20] Speaker 1: get all types like, you know, if you're a politician,
[16:24] Speaker 1: you have to be somewhat social. Aaron Rodgers is not
[16:28] Speaker 1: the same personality as Tom Brady. Remember Jake Plumber. I'd
[16:32] Speaker 1: love Jake Plumbers, you loved him. Jake and Aaron are
[16:35] Speaker 1: a little iconic classic. They're not corporate guys. They're just
[16:41] Speaker 1: not comfortable in that space. That's okay. Not everybody's a
[16:45] Speaker 1: Brady feels like a corporation. Manning feels like he leans
[16:48] Speaker 1: into the corporation. So I always thought Bryson and Brooks
[16:51] Speaker 1: may have been big, strong, great look in alphas.
[16:53] Speaker 2: They're just different guys.
[16:54] Speaker 3: Well, they're kind of opposite. You know, Brooks early on
[16:56] Speaker 3: his career gravitated with DJ. Both feel like, at least
[16:59] Speaker 3: so the public introverted, not giving you a lot.
[17:02] Speaker 4: Bryson, whod he gravitate toward Phil?
[17:04] Speaker 3: You know all this who's shaking hands, knows everybody's names,
[17:07] Speaker 3: hanging out with the CEO of all the companies. And
[17:09] Speaker 3: that's kind of Bryson's personality, Bryson's They're unique characters, you know,
[17:13] Speaker 3: DJ and Brooks like I envisioned them on a Sunday
[17:16] Speaker 3: watching football at home. You know who know Bryson's out
[17:19] Speaker 3: measuring the next golf club. Colin Phil what he thinks
[17:22] Speaker 3: about the wind and the scientifical intrinsic force of the
[17:26] Speaker 3: golf ball.
[17:27] Speaker 2: Right, that's what they talk about.
[17:28] Speaker 4: DJ says, I want to hit a fate.
[17:29] Speaker 2: I hit a fath.
[17:30] Speaker 1: I think you know it was interesting. I know there
[17:32] Speaker 1: was a book written about Phil. I don't think Phil
[17:34] Speaker 1: liked it at all, by Alan Shipknock, and it was
[17:36] Speaker 1: really fun. It was called Phil and I like Allen
[17:39] Speaker 1: and I you know, I've always been fascinated b Phil.
[17:43] Speaker 1: Phil Michlson's the only person in American sports that I've
[17:46] Speaker 1: never interviewed that I want to And I wouldn't even
[17:48] Speaker 1: talk golf.
[17:49] Speaker 2: I just talked life.
[17:50] Speaker 1: But when I read the book, what was interesting was
[17:53] Speaker 1: Phil's never tried to necessarily sell himself as politically correct.
[17:58] Speaker 2: I thought the.
[17:59] Speaker 1: Book made him remember the movie Gordon Gecko Wall Street.
[18:03] Speaker 1: So when they made that movie, Oliver Stone, he wasn't
[18:07] Speaker 1: trying to make Gordon Gecko popular, but young stockbrokers watched
[18:11] Speaker 1: the movie and when that is cool, I want to
[18:13] Speaker 1: be Gordon Gecko, And Oliver Stone said, yeah, that wasn't
[18:15] Speaker 1: the mission? Is that when Alan Shipnukk writes a book,
[18:20] Speaker 1: You're like, oh, it's very critical, and I was like, yeah,
[18:22] Speaker 1: but I've drank too much and I've done this, and
[18:26] Speaker 1: I thought it kind of humanized him. I looked at
[18:28] Speaker 1: Phil and I was like, I think I like Phil Moore. Now,
[18:31] Speaker 1: when somebody writes a book about you, that's not how
[18:34] Speaker 1: it lands for you. But I think Phil watching how
[18:37] Speaker 1: he was welcome today. I think everybody gets what Phil is.
[18:40] Speaker 1: He's a great you ever use this term? He's a
[18:43] Speaker 1: great hang.
[18:45] Speaker 3: I played in a golf event in Scott Sale probably
[18:47] Speaker 3: two or three months ago with multiple of his college
[18:50] Speaker 3: teammates and they are still very very close friends with
[18:53] Speaker 3: him today and one of their Football is a big
[18:55] Speaker 3: part of all these guys' lives.
[18:57] Speaker 4: You know, they like football. I'm with you on Phil.
[19:00] Speaker 3: One thing that my friends text about with Phil a lot,
[19:02] Speaker 3: it was like, you know that he gambles on.
[19:03] Speaker 4: Football, So why you know, so does every single human
[19:06] Speaker 4: in my life.
[19:07] Speaker 1: Yeah, you get into trouble in life when you're selling
[19:09] Speaker 1: one thing and you're doing another. You don't people love
[19:12] Speaker 1: John Day and John's like, yeah, I smoke way too much,
[19:15] Speaker 1: and it's like it'd be one thing, if we caught
[19:17] Speaker 1: him smoking on a tour and he's saying, you know,
[19:21] Speaker 1: I'm I don't care politicians do this, You're flawed. Own it, Yeah,
[19:26] Speaker 1: just just own your stuff. So when I look at Phil,
[19:28] Speaker 1: his legacy to me is he's a good hang.
[19:31] Speaker 3: Yeah, I mean I think he's gonna. I mean, he's
[19:32] Speaker 3: you know, if we were doing like quarterbacks. He's easily
[19:34] Speaker 3: one of the top seven eight golfers in the history
[19:36] Speaker 3: of the sport. And he's to me, he's the Peyton
[19:39] Speaker 3: Manning of golf. He just happened to play against Tom Brady.
[19:42] Speaker 3: He just happen to play against Tiger Woods. Right, If
[19:44] Speaker 3: Tiger Woods doesn't exist, what's Phil winning twelve majors?
[19:47] Speaker 4: You know?
[19:47] Speaker 3: I mean there was a time Phil didn't win his
[19:49] Speaker 3: first major till he was in his mid thirties.
[19:51] Speaker 4: Isn't that crazy?
[19:52] Speaker 3: Well, that's the wild part. And he won the one
[19:53] Speaker 3: at fifties. So I think you could argue his career,
[19:57] Speaker 3: you know, is unique because he won a tournament as
[19:59] Speaker 3: an amateur and he was kind of Tiger Woods before
[20:01] Speaker 3: Tiger Woods, and then five years later Tiger came and
[20:03] Speaker 3: it was just an all time comment.
[20:04] Speaker 2: I mean, just ask yourself this.
[20:06] Speaker 1: If I think once Rory won the Masters, because that
[20:09] Speaker 1: was the one we were all rooting for, right like,
[20:12] Speaker 1: all of a sudden, Rory's playing well at Augusta. You're like, oh, Sunday,
[20:15] Speaker 1: I'm sitting in front of a TV. If I told
[20:17] Speaker 1: you there's any golfer in the world and I said
[20:20] Speaker 1: it's two o'clock Eastern on a Sunday and Blank leads Augusta,
[20:26] Speaker 1: I think most sports fans would.
[20:27] Speaker 2: Say, oh, gimme Phil heck yim.
[20:30] Speaker 1: I mean that's just even though because there are certain golfers,
[20:35] Speaker 1: because golf's history, it's like it's almost like.
[20:38] Speaker 2: Watching old Nolan Ryan.
[20:40] Speaker 1: Nolan Ryan, they still put him on the marquee when
[20:43] Speaker 1: he was like at the end of his career. There
[20:44] Speaker 1: was one Nolan Ryan. And it's not just but you
[20:47] Speaker 1: have seven no hitters. There are certain athletes far have
[20:50] Speaker 1: had this quality. They're just relatable. You just kind of
[20:54] Speaker 1: like some kinetic energy. You just kind of feel like
[20:57] Speaker 1: when they're in the room, they changed the temperature.
[21:00] Speaker 4: Well, I think it was two like during the Tiger era.
[21:02] Speaker 3: Obviously Tiger was the best player I've ever seen, but
[21:06] Speaker 3: he didn't talk to anybody had no friends, wouldn't even
[21:10] Speaker 3: look at Marko.
[21:10] Speaker 2: Lemeira and him were kind of okay, and then they
[21:12] Speaker 2: broke up.
[21:14] Speaker 3: Phil was the one guy that would kind of play
[21:16] Speaker 3: the Arnold Palmer role, that would talk with the fans.
[21:18] Speaker 3: That was a big personality. So they kind of yin
[21:20] Speaker 3: and yanged each other in terms of personalities. He was
[21:23] Speaker 3: pretty important for Tiger in terms of the balancing out.
[21:26] Speaker 4: I mean those two were in such a different stratosphere.
[21:28] Speaker 3: Remember when they used to do like highest paid athlete
[21:31] Speaker 3: and it'd be Tiger than Phil, then like the Kobe's
[21:34] Speaker 3: and all the other guys. Yes, and then Lebron came
[21:36] Speaker 3: along and they were always third behind those two guys.
[21:38] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean they changed.
[21:39] Speaker 3: They took golf to a popularity level and a corporate
[21:43] Speaker 3: level I would say in the two thousands that they
[21:45] Speaker 3: had never even dreamed of with guys like Arnold Palmer.
[21:48] Speaker 1: Right, Yeah, you know, if you go back to and
[21:51] Speaker 1: you'd have to google this, but if you go back
[21:52] Speaker 1: to nineteen sixty before the PGA was created, I could
[21:59] Speaker 1: be wrong on this. Weren't Arnie and Jack because it
[22:02] Speaker 1: was called something differently and they didn't quite think they
[22:04] Speaker 1: were getting paid enough.
[22:05] Speaker 3: Yeah, they were about to break it down. They were
[22:07] Speaker 3: about try jack Jack led the charge.
[22:09] Speaker 1: Yeah, so I think you know Phil, Greg Norman complaining
[22:14] Speaker 1: four years you told me a story when you thought
[22:16] Speaker 1: there was a breaking point with Phil, And that's why
[22:18] Speaker 1: I've always defended lived with what was the break in?
[22:20] Speaker 3: It was Fox They bought the US Open and I
[22:23] Speaker 3: think they were paying well over one hundred million dollars
[22:25] Speaker 3: for a ten year deal a tournament, right, so ten
[22:28] Speaker 3: tournaments a billion dollars. And I remember Hunter Mayhon, who
[22:31] Speaker 3: was very close with Phil, was like one issue a
[22:33] Speaker 3: lot of players, but Phil was the most outspoken about it.
[22:37] Speaker 4: In baseball, basketball, football, there's a revenue sharing.
[22:39] Speaker 3: Well I get forty nine, you get fifty one, I
[22:41] Speaker 3: get forty nine.
[22:42] Speaker 4: Eight, you get you know whatever it split.
[22:44] Speaker 3: Basically, even the purseon went from like twelve million to
[22:48] Speaker 3: sixteen million, and Phil's like, what.
[22:50] Speaker 4: The hell is going on here? Where is the money going?
[22:52] Speaker 2: Right?
[22:52] Speaker 4: It didn't make sense?
[22:53] Speaker 3: And that was and obviously, you know live coming around
[22:57] Speaker 3: the PGA money, the money's exploded since this TIS usually
[23:00] Speaker 3: creates that. But like all these golfers have benefited, but
[23:03] Speaker 3: it was never like that that's right. You know, Tiger,
[23:05] Speaker 3: all these guys Phil too. When they were making sixty
[23:08] Speaker 3: eighty million dollars a year, they're only making three or
[23:10] Speaker 3: four in the course.
[23:12] Speaker 4: It was all coming off the course.
[23:14] Speaker 3: Yeah, so that's where Scotti Schffler now made sixty five million.
[23:17] Speaker 3: Joaquem Neeman winning all these tournaments has made like thirty
[23:19] Speaker 3: five million dollars.
[23:20] Speaker 4: These guys now are paid like NBA NFL boy.
[23:23] Speaker 2: And should be. Yeah.
[23:24] Speaker 1: I mean you and I were talking when we were
[23:25] Speaker 1: driving out of the tournament today. You got to drive yourself.
[23:29] Speaker 1: If you get sick, you don't get It's like being
[23:30] Speaker 1: a lawyer. If you're not working, you're not getting paid
[23:33] Speaker 1: well your own business.
[23:34] Speaker 3: So you're paying your coach, you're paying your caddy, you're
[23:36] Speaker 3: paying yourself, you're paying the git. You know, it's like
[23:38] Speaker 3: you are paying for the hotel when the Chiefs are
[23:41] Speaker 3: playing the Cardinals today. Do you know what, Patrick Mahomes
[23:44] Speaker 3: doesn't have to worry about the hotel. Travis Kelsey, they
[23:48] Speaker 3: take care of all that stuff.
[23:49] Speaker 2: So that's that's not golf.
[23:51] Speaker 3: But that's what makes this sport kind of way different
[23:54] Speaker 3: than all the other team sports in the sense that
[23:57] Speaker 3: you're kind of on your own right.
[23:58] Speaker 2: You have to worry about yourself. You have to.
[24:00] Speaker 4: You're just an independent contractor.
[24:02] Speaker 3: But when you're Brooks, when you're Bryson, when you're Scottie Rory,
[24:06] Speaker 3: these guys are such.
[24:06] Speaker 2: Big businesses now.
[24:08] Speaker 3: I mean, what's the difference between Phil's business for twenty
[24:10] Speaker 3: years and Steph Curry in terms of the revenue flowing in?
[24:13] Speaker 4: So you need the right people around you.
[24:14] Speaker 3: Think about what a common ship Bryson is right now,
[24:17] Speaker 3: I mean, just a business rocket ship.
[24:20] Speaker 2: John Middlecoff the herd.
[24:22] Speaker 1: We are a bowling brook liv Tour Live tour has
[24:24] Speaker 1: been fantastic. The guy that runs the whole thing. Every
[24:28] Speaker 1: golfer owes him a debt of gratitude. Isn't that nice?
[24:33] Speaker 1: I'm not sure if that's true, but it really is
[24:34] Speaker 1: a good intro. All right, round one here it lives
[24:38] Speaker 1: in Chicago to live Golf CEO. He succeeded Greg Norman,
[24:42] Speaker 1: Scott O'Neil with a storied and interesting Nick Sixer's history
[24:46] Speaker 1: and more. Next, all right, Scott O'Neil has been kind
[24:57] Speaker 1: enough to stop by. He sort of escorted John and
[24:59] Speaker 1: I for an hour. You succeeded Greg Norman in twenty
[25:03] Speaker 1: twenty five, and I think both John and I today
[25:08] Speaker 1: are takeaway on this because I had friends that come.
[25:11] Speaker 1: Foxes obviously has a relationship, it's an event, it's a
[25:15] Speaker 1: good time, and that's not a criticism of anything. But
[25:19] Speaker 1: when you're new, you get those little freebies that you're
[25:23] Speaker 1: not beholden the tradition and you know you've see You
[25:27] Speaker 1: ran the Sixers, you ran Madison Square Garden Network. When
[25:31] Speaker 1: you succeeded Greg, your takeaway was is it an intentional
[25:37] Speaker 1: act to be different or do you just kind of
[25:39] Speaker 1: watch your sport and watch the crowd and listen to
[25:41] Speaker 1: the golfers on all these innovations.
[25:43] Speaker 2: Right, that's interesting position.
[25:45] Speaker 5: I can tell you that having been in sports for
[25:47] Speaker 5: thirty years in the NFL and the NBA and NHL,
[25:50] Speaker 5: I've seen leagues change. We talked about earlier. Major League
[25:54] Speaker 5: Baseball puts a runner on second next year, has.
[25:56] Speaker 2: A pitch clock, by the way. Two things that I
[25:58] Speaker 2: absolutely love.
[25:59] Speaker 5: Where Philly's season ticket holders we go to a lot
[26:01] Speaker 5: of baseball games.
[26:02] Speaker 2: I love it.
[26:03] Speaker 5: The two line pass that just grinded the NHL to
[26:06] Speaker 5: a halt or overtime that could seem last forever. Now
[26:08] Speaker 5: that three on three overtime in NHL genius and with golf,
[26:12] Speaker 5: we're not splitting Adams and we're not saving lives.
[26:14] Speaker 2: But before we're bringing fans into this game.
[26:16] Speaker 5: So if there are little things we can do to
[26:18] Speaker 5: bring new people to this game and live our mission.
[26:20] Speaker 5: And by the way, the PGA Tour does a wonderful
[26:23] Speaker 5: job in the US. All we're saying is we want
[26:25] Speaker 5: to take these stars and take them to the world
[26:27] Speaker 5: because the game is growing in Australia, it's growing in Korea,
[26:30] Speaker 5: it's growing in China, and we have this opportunity to
[26:33] Speaker 5: grow the game. And so if we have guys stars
[26:36] Speaker 5: like Bryson D. Chambeau and John Rahm and Brooks Kepka
[26:39] Speaker 5: and Phil Michelson. I heard you talking about Phil Nicholson,
[26:42] Speaker 5: all Sergio Garcia, all these stars, if they're willing to
[26:44] Speaker 5: get on a plane and fly to Korea, let's go.
[26:47] Speaker 2: Let's go grow this game. Did they ever complain about
[26:49] Speaker 2: the music?
[26:50] Speaker 5: No, you know what's so strange that exists before you
[26:53] Speaker 5: got here. Yeah, they love the music on the range.
[26:56] Speaker 5: A lot of math headphones and they're listening to music.
[26:58] Speaker 5: First off, But what's really strange to me, is there
[27:01] Speaker 5: they found the music. But if somebody says something on
[27:03] Speaker 5: their back, that's right, they'll step back and look over
[27:06] Speaker 5: at them, you know, which which always to me is strange.
[27:08] Speaker 2: But they like the consistency of the music.
[27:10] Speaker 5: They like the PA and on the first team you
[27:12] Speaker 5: might remember their walk up songs just.
[27:14] Speaker 2: Like basical they choose, they choose them. Yeah, and it
[27:17] Speaker 2: always is funny.
[27:17] Speaker 5: It's the songs they choose always are very fitts.
[27:20] Speaker 4: Justin Joneson came out to Wonder Wall by ways.
[27:25] Speaker 2: These they're superstitious too.
[27:27] Speaker 4: They have a bad.
[27:28] Speaker 2: Round the song's gone, imagine.
[27:29] Speaker 1: So how often do the golfers, Because you have a
[27:31] Speaker 1: relationship with all.
[27:32] Speaker 2: Of them very very much.
[27:33] Speaker 1: And and this is again I'm not taking shots. James jam
[27:36] Speaker 1: wan a Hand had some contentious relationships and my take
[27:40] Speaker 1: was always outside of Augusta, I don't watch golf for
[27:43] Speaker 1: the course, I watch it for the guys.
[27:45] Speaker 2: Your relationships different.
[27:47] Speaker 1: Like the golfers are coming over to you, do they complain,
[27:51] Speaker 1: do they make suggestions?
[27:52] Speaker 2: You tell me what you go through?
[27:54] Speaker 1: Bryson, Phil Sergio, What are the conversations like when they
[27:57] Speaker 1: call you at nine thirty at night.
[28:00] Speaker 5: Yeah, yeah, no, we're twenty four to seven operation. And
[28:03] Speaker 5: some of those guys like six am calls and some
[28:05] Speaker 5: of them like them at midnight, and I'll take them all.
[28:07] Speaker 5: I cannot get enough of these players. I always think
[28:10] Speaker 5: ambivalence is the worst possible emotion, and whether that be
[28:14] Speaker 5: a fan or a player, guys that are passionate and
[28:16] Speaker 5: have something to say. I've got a lot of time
[28:18] Speaker 5: for We're very active with the players. Now there are
[28:21] Speaker 5: business parts. It's a bit of a different model.
[28:23] Speaker 2: You know, they.
[28:23] Speaker 5: Own equity in the teams. You know, it's a very
[28:25] Speaker 5: different model. And so every change we make, every course,
[28:30] Speaker 5: we go to the schedule on how it's set up.
[28:32] Speaker 5: Do you want to play before Major or after Major?
[28:34] Speaker 5: I'm engaging. We're talking about agronomy last night with some
[28:37] Speaker 5: of these players, Like, hey, the Greens are rolling at eleven,
[28:40] Speaker 5: you know, the wins coming in. Should we be watering,
[28:42] Speaker 5: should we not be warning? Should be pressing? I mean,
[28:44] Speaker 5: they are very very much into making this great.
[28:48] Speaker 2: But guess what this is our third full year.
[28:51] Speaker 5: Imagine Major League Baseball in year three, Imagine the National
[28:54] Speaker 5: Football League in year three.
[28:56] Speaker 2: We're year three.
[28:57] Speaker 1: Well, you're friends with Dana White, who I love. You
[29:00] Speaker 1: love UFC as well. So I can remember being in
[29:03] Speaker 1: a bar in the Bay and it wasn't UFC yet who.
[29:07] Speaker 1: By the way, the late John McCain tried to throw
[29:09] Speaker 1: UFC off cable. They were battling for years. You watch
[29:13] Speaker 1: an event now and you're like, man, it's slick. I
[29:15] Speaker 1: can remember when Dana took it over and he wanted
[29:17] Speaker 1: corporate support. It's like, Okay, we can't do eye gouging.
[29:20] Speaker 1: We can't do this. If you go look at over
[29:24] Speaker 1: the course of UFC now it looks all slick. My
[29:27] Speaker 1: wife's not a sports fan, she loves UFC. But the
[29:30] Speaker 1: truth is we live in a very impatient world. Live
[29:33] Speaker 1: golfs in year three, Like, guys, take a deep breath.
[29:37] Speaker 1: It's like, as I'm in the year four of the volume,
[29:39] Speaker 1: there are things we do now we look at we're like,
[29:42] Speaker 1: why were we? Why were we doing this two years ago?
[29:44] Speaker 1: Like the world you're an entrepreneur, it's growing.
[29:47] Speaker 2: You know what's going through my head?
[29:48] Speaker 5: This isn't the question you asked, but I'm like, Connor McGregor,
[29:52] Speaker 5: is that our Bryson d chambeau, What did you say?
[29:55] Speaker 5: Do you remember gsp CSP Is that John Ram That's
[29:58] Speaker 5: what's going through my head as you're talking about.
[30:00] Speaker 3: Very similar in UFC never had the you know, there
[30:02] Speaker 3: are more famous players, I would say in lived than
[30:06] Speaker 3: UFC's ever had, of course, at least, I mean esventually
[30:08] Speaker 3: your top five to six guys.
[30:10] Speaker 2: I'm looking at Odell. I mean he's in now, Chuck.
[30:13] Speaker 2: The Dell's are going too.
[30:14] Speaker 3: He's a needle mover.
[30:15] Speaker 1: No you Phil, I asked you, I said, where is
[30:19] Speaker 1: Phil now? And you reminded me he had a top
[30:21] Speaker 1: ten finition Augusta a couple of years ago, two years ago?
[30:25] Speaker 2: What is you have a close relationship? What is he now?
[30:29] Speaker 2: Is he Entrumpneuver?
[30:30] Speaker 4: First?
[30:31] Speaker 2: Is he golfer? Second? I mean he's slimmed down? What
[30:33] Speaker 2: is he?
[30:33] Speaker 5: I mean, he's an enigma and I don't think there's
[30:36] Speaker 5: going to be another Phil Nicholson. He's fifty four years old,
[30:38] Speaker 5: about turn fifty five. His goal this year was to
[30:42] Speaker 5: get into the top ten of this league with a
[30:43] Speaker 5: bunch of young stars in their prime. Okay, he decided
[30:47] Speaker 5: to remake and change his game to be a little
[30:50] Speaker 5: less wild wild West, a little bit more less hit
[30:52] Speaker 5: in the middle of the fairway. Let's get on in regulation,
[30:55] Speaker 5: and let's let's take this buttter.
[30:56] Speaker 1: First, because the team format or just his body, no,
[30:58] Speaker 1: I think I think his body's change. He can't do
[31:00] Speaker 1: what these young kids we talked about Tom mckibbon or
[31:03] Speaker 1: Caleb Sarrah or David Pooh. They're coming and hitting the
[31:06] Speaker 1: ball three in the thirty yards off the tee and
[31:07] Speaker 1: he's like, Okay, I know I can't do that, but
[31:09] Speaker 1: I can beat these guys.
[31:10] Speaker 2: I'm better. I'm that good.
[31:11] Speaker 5: So that's that's one part of Phil. The second part
[31:13] Speaker 5: of Phil is he's just a competitor. Like these guys.
[31:18] Speaker 5: You look at golfers from the outside before I came
[31:20] Speaker 5: to this business, and I'm like, God, that's it's nice.
[31:22] Speaker 5: These are not gentlemen, Okay, these are guys who are
[31:25] Speaker 5: so fiercely competitive. When they come off the course, they're like,
[31:29] Speaker 5: you know, they have all this testosterone adrenaline roll and
[31:32] Speaker 5: I'm like, I like to see it. I mean, we
[31:34] Speaker 5: do a little corporate thing, a little putting contest. I mean,
[31:37] Speaker 5: DJ was complaining that the reads were different. It's a
[31:40] Speaker 5: court by a bunch of executives putting among the side
[31:43] Speaker 5: of this competition. These guys want to win and want
[31:45] Speaker 5: to fight, and that's the other side of Phil. And
[31:46] Speaker 5: the third piece is think about Phil the learner. Think
[31:50] Speaker 5: about like Phil saw what Bryson was doing on YouTube
[31:52] Speaker 5: and he's like, why can't I do that? So we
[31:55] Speaker 5: partners with Grant Orbath. Now he's got four hundred thousand
[31:57] Speaker 5: followers on YouTube. Phil Mickelson, fifty four year old Phil
[32:00] Speaker 5: Nicholson reimagining himself, reinventing himself. And then he's obviously the
[32:04] Speaker 5: captain and one of our partners and high flyers. So
[32:07] Speaker 5: he's always I see him on the first tee, I'm like, hey, Phil,
[32:10] Speaker 5: good luck, knock him dead, give him hell today and
[32:13] Speaker 5: he wants to talk about the business. Okay, Scott, how
[32:15] Speaker 5: many fans we're going to have here today? When we
[32:17] Speaker 5: go to when you're looking at a market and you
[32:19] Speaker 5: I mean, I'm like, I'm this guy, this guy's for real. Yeah,
[32:21] Speaker 5: So I love. I've been around some of the great
[32:24] Speaker 5: execs in the world. David Stern was a long time
[32:26] Speaker 5: mentor of mine. I worked for him for eight years
[32:29] Speaker 5: and I just remember him being this lifelong learner.
[32:31] Speaker 2: Adam Silver, the current commission in the NBA.
[32:32] Speaker 5: Always learning, always reaching, always discovering, always figuring out what
[32:36] Speaker 5: do I have to do next?
[32:37] Speaker 2: That's Phil Nicholson, those duels. His idea was that yours.
[32:41] Speaker 5: No, you know that that came out of you know,
[32:43] Speaker 5: like we've been studying the YouTube spaces. If you walk
[32:46] Speaker 5: the range and talk to the little young kids, which
[32:48] Speaker 5: I like to do. I always said, who's your favorite player,
[32:50] Speaker 5: Bryson Champo. Really, how'd you discover Bryson YouTube? So I
[32:53] Speaker 5: think once we saw the revolution happening on YouTube, did
[32:56] Speaker 5: you do.
[32:56] Speaker 3: It when Grant or Fat Perez come out here?
[32:59] Speaker 2: He is famous?
[32:59] Speaker 5: Yeah, no, it's it's amazing. And so for those of
[33:03] Speaker 5: you who don't know, the Duels is a program we have.
[33:05] Speaker 5: We have golf influencers and they play a lot. They
[33:08] Speaker 5: partner up with one of our stars and then they
[33:10] Speaker 5: play a competition for money for the you know, and
[33:13] Speaker 5: the fact that you can get John Rahm to give
[33:16] Speaker 5: four hours of his time to.
[33:18] Speaker 2: Play an event, you know, pretty special.
[33:21] Speaker 5: I don't think that happens in any other sport anywhere
[33:23] Speaker 5: else in the world.
[33:24] Speaker 2: None of us are born.
[33:25] Speaker 1: In attest to Billy, Joel said in his recent documentary
[33:28] Speaker 1: We all have influences, all of us in our life.
[33:31] Speaker 1: We have mentors that could be our dad. Do you
[33:34] Speaker 1: look at say F one, and you look at it
[33:37] Speaker 1: and think it's a little bit of an inspiration for us?
[33:39] Speaker 1: Are there are there sports that you look at because
[33:41] Speaker 1: we connect you to golf.
[33:43] Speaker 2: But golf's global now and I.
[33:46] Speaker 1: Look at F one and I think in UFC, and
[33:48] Speaker 1: I think, well, that is that's lived golf.
[33:51] Speaker 5: That's how I view it. Do you look at one
[33:53] Speaker 5: hundred percent of how I see it? When you say
[33:55] Speaker 5: golf is global? I would push back on you and say, well,
[33:58] Speaker 5: you know, maybe before Tiger the sport was global. You know,
[34:00] Speaker 5: you had the European Tour and the PGA Tour like
[34:03] Speaker 5: sitting side by side, and then Tiger comes and all
[34:06] Speaker 5: the money, all the sponsors, all the TV money shifts
[34:08] Speaker 5: over the PGA Tour and so then forty two events
[34:10] Speaker 5: a year, you got every great player in the world
[34:13] Speaker 5: playing in the US, and like Formula one, we go
[34:17] Speaker 5: to Riot and then we go to Australia and then
[34:19] Speaker 5: Hong Kong and Singapore and Mexico City, and yes, we're
[34:22] Speaker 5: here in the US for five times a year, which
[34:25] Speaker 5: is in the UK fantastic.
[34:26] Speaker 2: We love being in the US. I'm an American, absolutely
[34:29] Speaker 2: love it here.
[34:30] Speaker 5: But the growth of the game, if you want to
[34:32] Speaker 5: grow the game, you've got to take stars and you
[34:34] Speaker 5: got to put them in Korea. You've got to put
[34:35] Speaker 5: them in Hong Kong. And that we think attracts more
[34:38] Speaker 5: young fans and talented this game, and this game is
[34:41] Speaker 5: going to the moon.
[34:42] Speaker 1: What are the demographics quickly on I mean you've looked
[34:45] Speaker 1: at all of them. What is the average live golf fan?
[34:49] Speaker 1: What's the demo?
[34:50] Speaker 5: They were about fifteen years younger than a typical golf
[34:52] Speaker 5: fan we saw today. Yeah, and what you might also
[34:56] Speaker 5: see if you get to walk a little bit, is
[34:57] Speaker 5: you see parents pushing strollers.
[34:59] Speaker 2: You'll see, you know, groups of women coming.
[35:03] Speaker 5: About about forty percent of our audience's female. It could
[35:07] Speaker 5: be a good dating opportunity for those who are single
[35:09] Speaker 5: out there come to see live. So so it's a
[35:13] Speaker 5: it's a younger it still has this supposable income. We
[35:16] Speaker 5: do a concerts, you know, so we have in the
[35:18] Speaker 5: next coming We've got Swedish House Mafia. We have Imagine Dragons,
[35:23] Speaker 5: you know, so Jason Derulo. So we have concerts that
[35:25] Speaker 5: I think attract a younger audience as well.
[35:28] Speaker 4: One question I'm sure you get a lot is unification. Yes,
[35:33] Speaker 4: you know, you're an NBA, NFL.
[35:35] Speaker 3: You've the new commission of the PGA to our CEO
[35:38] Speaker 3: whatever in the heck position is yeah, he's an NFL guy.
[35:41] Speaker 3: Have you guys talked, you know, just what the chatter
[35:44] Speaker 3: out there?
[35:44] Speaker 2: What is the reality of what?
[35:46] Speaker 5: Sure? So I'm not sure it's like the NFL. I
[35:48] Speaker 5: think it's more like NASCAR and Formula One. So the
[35:51] Speaker 5: question is should NASCAR and Formula One figure out a
[35:54] Speaker 5: way to work together?
[35:55] Speaker 2: I think so.
[35:56] Speaker 5: Brian Rolapp and I went to school together, so we
[35:58] Speaker 5: know each other fairly well. I've known each other for
[35:59] Speaker 5: a long time. He's really early in his job. I
[36:02] Speaker 5: think he's two weeks in and most importantly, we have
[36:06] Speaker 5: less scar tissue.
[36:07] Speaker 2: And that's throughout the whole industry. You know, I'm new.
[36:10] Speaker 2: You know, the LPGA commissioner's new.
[36:12] Speaker 5: Now, Brian at the PGA Tour is new, Mark Darwin
[36:16] Speaker 5: at the RNA is new. So you have all these
[36:18] Speaker 5: new people here and why are we all here? Because
[36:21] Speaker 5: the boards and all of golf looked around and said, huh,
[36:24] Speaker 5: I don't think this is good enough. I don't think
[36:27] Speaker 5: we're heading in the right direction. I think we've got
[36:29] Speaker 5: to find a way to put more players playing together.
[36:32] Speaker 5: How are we going to do that? How are we
[36:33] Speaker 5: going to lift up? How are we going to compete
[36:34] Speaker 5: against cricket and football and tennis?
[36:37] Speaker 2: And why are we competing against ourselves so much?
[36:40] Speaker 1: When you have an event like this, how how do
[36:46] Speaker 1: you select? Obviously you want to make a global but
[36:49] Speaker 1: how did you select Chicago? How does that? I mean
[36:52] Speaker 1: is that your call before you?
[36:54] Speaker 2: Was that predate?
[36:55] Speaker 1: You?
[36:55] Speaker 2: Greg Norman? Who makes the decisions where you play? Why? Right?
[37:00] Speaker 5: So the board has to approve, it's our chairman has
[37:04] Speaker 5: to approve. But and Ross Hollett runs our events like
[37:08] Speaker 5: a thirty year executive in golf, mostly at IMG is
[37:12] Speaker 5: now here and then I'm very engaged.
[37:14] Speaker 2: Of course, Now Chicago. Why not Chicago? I mean, it's
[37:16] Speaker 2: one of the great cities of America.
[37:18] Speaker 5: It's a big golf starved in terms of this area,
[37:21] Speaker 5: and this course is absolutely spectacular.
[37:23] Speaker 1: You mentioned something earlier, and you know this being in Philadelphia,
[37:27] Speaker 1: when you live in a city with three or four
[37:29] Speaker 1: cold winter months, when the sun shines in March everybody
[37:34] Speaker 1: jogs like non joggers jog. So my take was it
[37:38] Speaker 1: works in this city because for four months you don't
[37:41] Speaker 1: go outside.
[37:42] Speaker 2: Is that something you would like?
[37:43] Speaker 1: Like Philadelphia's got that feel, Boston has that feel.
[37:47] Speaker 2: I spend some time in the Northeast.
[37:49] Speaker 1: I mean, if it's sunny in April, Boston is like
[37:52] Speaker 1: jogging capital of the world. Do you think about it
[37:54] Speaker 1: because you're such an event, This is an event we're watching.
[37:58] Speaker 1: It's not about history, it's about what town or city
[38:01] Speaker 1: works for us.
[38:02] Speaker 2: Is that under consideration? Yeah, of course.
[38:04] Speaker 5: I mean we were just in Dallas, though, and that's
[38:07] Speaker 5: sun almost every day of the year, and it was
[38:09] Speaker 5: blazing home. We had fifty thousand people show up. Yeah,
[38:12] Speaker 5: so you know we're in the UK. The sun's never out.
[38:15] Speaker 1: You know.
[38:15] Speaker 5: I lived there for two years and we have forty
[38:17] Speaker 5: thousand people come there. So I feel like I feel
[38:21] Speaker 5: like if we do our jobs and let people know
[38:24] Speaker 5: that we're in town with the kind of star power
[38:26] Speaker 5: we have, good things happen when you put a music
[38:29] Speaker 5: act around it.
[38:30] Speaker 2: We have Good.
[38:30] Speaker 5: Charlotte here playing today. I can't tell you who Good
[38:32] Speaker 5: Charlotte is. I can tell you my daughters, Ken you know,
[38:35] Speaker 5: and so there is a younger demo we're looking for.
[38:37] Speaker 5: And I think if we go to the right markets.
[38:39] Speaker 5: In many cases we're going to Indianapolis. Not exactly a
[38:42] Speaker 5: powerhouse market, right, but it's a golf starve market, and
[38:45] Speaker 5: that is a market that knows how to rally for
[38:47] Speaker 5: big events.
[38:48] Speaker 2: I've been there for final fours.
[38:49] Speaker 1: You know.
[38:50] Speaker 5: You know how that handles the final four? Does it
[38:51] Speaker 5: really well? And I think they're handling us really well.
[38:53] Speaker 3: Well, I sent a pick to our mutual buddy Howie Roseman,
[38:56] Speaker 3: and you know, like how he's dealing with the player.
[38:58] Speaker 2: It's you, the player, of the agent. There's not to
[39:00] Speaker 2: deal with anyone else. Golfers have an entourage.
[39:03] Speaker 3: They got coaches, they got agents, they got they.
[39:06] Speaker 4: Got a lot of people around them.
[39:08] Speaker 2: How do you deal with that? Well?
[39:09] Speaker 5: We this is uh, this is a league of alphas.
[39:12] Speaker 5: So you know, if if John Ram or DJ or
[39:16] Speaker 5: Phil or Price didn't have an issue, that's one on one.
[39:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's one on one.
[39:21] Speaker 5: But remember that how complicated relationship is. We signed them,
[39:25] Speaker 5: you know, we we have to hug them.
[39:28] Speaker 2: We have to. There are business partners. We find them
[39:30] Speaker 2: when things go wrong.
[39:31] Speaker 5: So it's a complicated relationship, like how you manage that ecosystem?
[39:35] Speaker 3: How does someone if you don't know these guys, obviously,
[39:37] Speaker 3: when you get the job, forge your relationship in a short.
[39:40] Speaker 2: Period of time with Phil Bris and all these guys.
[39:42] Speaker 2: How's that possible?
[39:43] Speaker 5: Well, we spend a lot of time together, and we've
[39:44] Speaker 5: been on the road for seven months and and we
[39:47] Speaker 5: effectively live on airplanes and hotels and at the course together.
[39:51] Speaker 5: So time was one second? Is you put infrastructure in play?
[39:55] Speaker 5: So I have team breakfast at least one a time.
[40:00] Speaker 5: We have all kinds of committees that we get together.
[40:02] Speaker 5: I'm interacting with them. We eat breakfast, lunch and dinner together.
[40:04] Speaker 5: I mean, we're with these guys all the time. And
[40:07] Speaker 5: so and then it's about am I curious enough? Am
[40:09] Speaker 5: I humble enough to engage?
[40:12] Speaker 2: Yeah?
[40:12] Speaker 1: We talked about this before you came on. And if
[40:15] Speaker 1: you're just chewing again, this is Scott O'Neill. He's a
[40:18] Speaker 1: live golf CEO and he worked for the Sixers, ran
[40:21] Speaker 1: that organization and MSG Entertainment.
[40:23] Speaker 2: Is that what you ran the New York Knicks and
[40:25] Speaker 2: New York Rangers?
[40:25] Speaker 1: Okay, that's a big job. James Dolan, Yes, yes, spoke
[40:28] Speaker 1: to him two days ago. Oh you did, I did.
[40:31] Speaker 1: I don't like what they did with Tom Thibodoh but
[40:33] Speaker 1: that's another podcast.
[40:34] Speaker 2: No, it's sure heck of a coach. He is.
[40:38] Speaker 1: When you look, you're obviously going to expand and you
[40:42] Speaker 1: want to keep doing that globally. Is where the money
[40:47] Speaker 1: comes from? Are their demands that you have to meet?
[40:51] Speaker 1: Do you feel like is there pressure? Yes, yes, of course,
[40:55] Speaker 1: because there's this always a sea. Hey, money is endless.
[40:58] Speaker 1: Money is not an issue, and I always think money's
[40:59] Speaker 1: in a.
[41:00] Speaker 2: You everywhere everywhere. Of course.
[41:01] Speaker 5: You know I've worked in private equity now for twelve years, okay,
[41:04] Speaker 5: for and for Josh Harrison, David Blitzer from Paula and Blackstone,
[41:09] Speaker 5: and in my last role with a Blackstone company and
[41:11] Speaker 5: now here with PIF And yes, there's a lot of
[41:14] Speaker 5: pressure to deliver a business and that's what I signed
[41:16] Speaker 5: up for. Like I can't get enough of this. I
[41:18] Speaker 5: will tell you there are very few times in life
[41:21] Speaker 5: you probably both have it too, where you can't wait
