Colin’s top takes of the week. He begins with the Jags beating the Chiefs on MNF and despite their 2-3 record, argues that the Chiefs offense is improving and they’re still one of the best teams in the league (3:00). Then, he’s joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” to break down a wild, high-scoring game between Baker Mayfield and the Bucs & Sam Darnold’s Seahawks (9:00) and debate whether Daniel Jones deserves to be in the MVP discussion after the Colts 4-1 start (27:00). Finally, Colin is joined by 'First Things First' co-host Danny Parkins to discuss whether Bill Belichick will survive his first season at UNC (34:00), whether Jared Goff is on track to make the Hall of Fame (51:00), and why Colin likes using Waymo far more than Uber (56:00). [0:52] Speaker 1: This episode is presented by Uber eats. When football makes
[0:55] Speaker 1: you hungry, order Uber eats I do every weekend. Jags
[1:00] Speaker 1: beat Kansas City thirty one to twenty eight, but if
[1:03] Speaker 1: you look at the final stats, Kansas City had four
[1:05] Speaker 1: hundred and sixty five yards, three hundred and seven yards
[1:08] Speaker 1: passing one time of possession twenty five to seventeen first downs.
[1:13] Speaker 1: You know, Mahomes had a pick six and did not
[1:16] Speaker 1: see the guy. He threw a ball that he didn't
[1:18] Speaker 1: see the defender, So I give him a little bit
[1:21] Speaker 1: of a pass on that. I don't know what I
[1:24] Speaker 1: think Kansas City's really good. I don't think right now
[1:27] Speaker 1: they're as consistent as Detroit, but they have a better defense.
[1:32] Speaker 1: I don't think they have the consistent pass rush or
[1:35] Speaker 1: pass protection of Denver. They don't have the roster of Philly,
[1:40] Speaker 1: and they don't have the late game magic of Tampa.
[1:45] Speaker 1: I think Kansas City, outside of those teams, is the
[1:47] Speaker 1: fourth or fifth best team in the NFL. If they
[1:50] Speaker 1: played Green Bay tomorrow, green Bay's young, I wouldn't trust them.
[1:54] Speaker 1: I'd take Kansas City Rams again. Rams got out played
[1:59] Speaker 1: by the Colts. They were lucky to win that game
[2:00] Speaker 1: and lost to the Niners. I don't know what to
[2:02] Speaker 1: do with the Jags. I don't think the Jags are
[2:04] Speaker 1: better than Kansas City. I don't think if they played again,
[2:08] Speaker 1: Mahomes would have a pick six, and it was in Jacksonville.
[2:11] Speaker 1: Which is not worth much, but it was worth something.
[2:14] Speaker 1: I really liked Kansas City tonight. I think, you know,
[2:19] Speaker 1: keep your eye on Burchard Smith. He played that Miami Hurricanes.
[2:24] Speaker 1: I think he was a seventh round pick for them.
[2:26] Speaker 1: Between Kelsey Worthy, Hollywood Brown, and Burshard. Smith is emerging
[2:31] Speaker 1: as a real player for them. When Rashid Rice comes back,
[2:35] Speaker 1: Kansas City's going to have a really good receiving core.
[2:37] Speaker 1: They passed for over three hundred yards tonight. I thought
[2:39] Speaker 1: Mahomes was magical. Twenty eight to thirty seven, three hundred
[2:43] Speaker 1: and seven yards, six rushing attempts, ten yards per rush.
[2:48] Speaker 1: I thought he was unbelievable. He had a bad pick six,
[2:52] Speaker 1: and you know he has to be their leading rusher.
[2:54] Speaker 1: It's not ideal. I don't think they're a super Bowl team,
[2:58] Speaker 1: but you know, again, there's not a great team in
[3:01] Speaker 1: this league right now. I'm doing the Herd hierarchy tomorrow.
[3:03] Speaker 1: I don't know what the hell to do with Jacksonville.
[3:07] Speaker 1: I don't know what to do with Seattle. I can't
[3:08] Speaker 1: put Seattle in and I think they're good. You know,
[3:12] Speaker 1: I got the Colts at ten, I got Buffalo at
[3:14] Speaker 1: eight or nine. I'm not sure what to do with Buffalo.
[3:16] Speaker 1: I don't trust their defense. I don't have New England
[3:19] Speaker 1: in it, and they just beat Buffalo. I don't do standings.
[3:24] Speaker 1: Jacksonville's four and one, Kansas City is two and three.
[3:27] Speaker 1: I think Kansas City's better, I do. I think they're
[3:30] Speaker 1: the better team, and I think when they get Rashid Rice,
[3:33] Speaker 1: they'll take another jump up. I think Kansas City is
[3:36] Speaker 1: an old team. They're going to be built for October, November,
[3:39] Speaker 1: and December. It's just crazy right now. There's no great teams.
[3:43] Speaker 1: There's great coaches, there's great quarterbacks, there's great units. I
[3:47] Speaker 1: think the best unit in the league is the running
[3:49] Speaker 1: back room for the Lions and the offensive line for
[3:52] Speaker 1: the Lions. Offensively, Detroit is just a freaking handful.
[3:56] Speaker 2: Man.
[3:57] Speaker 1: They are just blowing people out, and you have to now.
[4:01] Speaker 1: One of the things I've learned over the last couple
[4:03] Speaker 1: of years, as they've extended the schedule the seventeen games,
[4:07] Speaker 1: I think one of the things we have to all
[4:08] Speaker 1: come to terms with is you just can't count week one.
[4:11] Speaker 1: I mean, the Raiders beat the Patriots in Week one,
[4:13] Speaker 1: the Lions got smoked by Green Bay. It's just an
[4:17] Speaker 1: extension of preseason because nobody plays starters in the preseason,
[4:20] Speaker 1: so Week one is really teams like it's an extension
[4:24] Speaker 1: of the preseason. You can't. I mean, I had a winning,
[4:27] Speaker 1: blazing five. I don't know how I lucked into that.
[4:31] Speaker 1: But week two to now, I mean there's some obvious
[4:35] Speaker 1: I just think the season now is so long that
[4:39] Speaker 1: you're just gonna have bad home games. Buffalo last night,
[4:42] Speaker 1: just the fumbles early. I think Buffalo is better than
[4:44] Speaker 1: New England. I think they played them five times. We
[4:46] Speaker 1: beat them four to five times, and it beat them
[4:48] Speaker 1: last night at home. So you know, I watched this
[4:52] Speaker 1: game and it looked, you know, I thought it would
[4:56] Speaker 1: be a little lower scoring. I thought it was wildly entertaining.
[4:58] Speaker 2: You know.
[4:59] Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence. I was the one of the first Trevor
[5:01] Speaker 1: Lawrence fanboys. I saw him in high school. I went
[5:04] Speaker 1: to a camp in San Diego and he was down
[5:06] Speaker 1: there with all that wild hair. And I came back
[5:09] Speaker 1: on the air and I said, man, I just saw
[5:10] Speaker 1: one of the best high school quarterbacks I've ever seen.
[5:12] Speaker 1: He was insane, but he is man fumbles, fumble at
[5:18] Speaker 1: the goal line, bad interception, you know, the pick six
[5:22] Speaker 1: Malmes did not see the defender. You know, the timing
[5:26] Speaker 1: and the spot of that interception by Trevor Lawrence felt
[5:29] Speaker 1: like it was worse and he's just worth a couple
[5:32] Speaker 1: of turnovers. It feels like in big spots. But I
[5:34] Speaker 1: will say is Jacksonville's problem isn't talent, it's sort of belief.
[5:43] Speaker 1: I mean, for them to travel cross country and beat
[5:45] Speaker 1: San Francisco, that's impressive. They had a really good special
[5:49] Speaker 1: team's day, so they're finding kind of different ways to win.
[5:53] Speaker 1: Kansas City. Give Trevor Lawrence credit though in that final drive,
[5:56] Speaker 1: holy Crow that he have a couple of darts and
[6:00] Speaker 1: Kansas City was bringing heat and spags was bringing like
[6:04] Speaker 1: safety blitz and he escaped and he almost fell down
[6:09] Speaker 1: on that winning touchdown. It was not artistic, but that
[6:13] Speaker 1: throw to Michael Thomas up the right sideline, that is
[6:18] Speaker 1: as good a throw as Trevor Lawrence has made as
[6:20] Speaker 1: a professional quarterback. That was a perfect throw. That was
[6:25] Speaker 1: all time stuff. That's Eli Manning to Mario Manningham in
[6:29] Speaker 1: the Super Bowl when he fits it in the bread basket.
[6:32] Speaker 1: That throw by Trevor Lawrence will go down as one
[6:34] Speaker 1: of his great throws as a pro to beat Kansas City.
[6:38] Speaker 1: So you know, I know the records say that the
[6:41] Speaker 1: Jags are a better team. I'm not sure they are.
[6:43] Speaker 1: You know, I don't think New England's better than Buffalo.
[6:46] Speaker 1: I just thought it was a great night for them
[6:47] Speaker 1: in a great win. I don't know what I'm gonna
[6:51] Speaker 1: do with a hurt hierarchy. I think Detroit's the best
[6:53] Speaker 1: team in the league right now, but there's an argument
[6:56] Speaker 1: Tampa's second. I thought Tampa beating Seattle in Seattle was
[6:59] Speaker 1: so impressed. Well, because games are played on Mondays a
[7:03] Speaker 1: couple of them and Thursdays, you don't always get the
[7:06] Speaker 1: greatest Sunday slate. But some of the games today were fantastic.
[7:12] Speaker 1: Tampa Bay thirty eight, walk off field goal to win
[7:15] Speaker 1: it over Seattle thirty five. It looked like young Brady
[7:19] Speaker 1: and Peyton Manning. I don't remember a game like that.
[7:25] Speaker 1: Darnold's always been a little more athletic than Baker had
[7:28] Speaker 1: a couple of all timers. Baker just kept They couldn't
[7:32] Speaker 1: stop him. You know, Seattle's defense has really shut down
[7:38] Speaker 1: a lot of good offenses in the last couple of years,
[7:42] Speaker 1: especially at the end of last year. Baker had no
[7:44] Speaker 1: problem with it. Ibuka had no problem with it. I
[7:47] Speaker 1: guess my takeaway from this game was if these two
[7:51] Speaker 1: met in the NFC Championship, I wouldn't be shocked. I mean,
[7:54] Speaker 1: it's an offensive league. I would not be shocked. I
[7:57] Speaker 1: don't think tonight was a mirage. I think those are
[8:00] Speaker 1: good quarterbacks and really good teams full of excellent young players.
[8:04] Speaker 1: And by the way, John John Middlikoff two of the
[8:07] Speaker 1: best gms. These rosters have dudes everywhere.
[8:10] Speaker 3: Yeah, I totally agree. I mean, at one point in time,
[8:13] Speaker 3: Colin it was twenty one to twenty one. They were
[8:15] Speaker 3: thirty nine of forty five for four hundred and fifty
[8:17] Speaker 3: yards and three touchdowns like this is. But it just
[8:20] Speaker 3: kept going on. I mean, they made play after play
[8:23] Speaker 3: outside the construct of the play, right, both of them
[8:26] Speaker 3: scrambling around. We know, Darnold, I mean, Baker now is
[8:28] Speaker 3: a mobile, you know, behind the line of scrimmage keeping.
[8:31] Speaker 2: They were fantastic.
[8:32] Speaker 3: That was as entertaining of a game watching these two
[8:37] Speaker 3: guys that have clearly resurrected their career now for a
[8:40] Speaker 3: couple of years.
[8:41] Speaker 2: That was awesome.
[8:42] Speaker 3: I mean that those guys I know, Sam, you know
[8:45] Speaker 3: the lasting image will be a him throwing the interception.
[8:47] Speaker 3: But that was on Todd Bowles called an incredible blitz.
[8:50] Speaker 3: You saw in the slow motion replay. It wasn't a
[8:53] Speaker 3: bad pass. He got hit and the ball went in
[8:54] Speaker 3: the wrong direction. Both those guys could miss. They felt like,
[8:58] Speaker 3: you know Steph Curry when every time he shot, you
[9:00] Speaker 3: just think the ball is going to hit nothing but
[9:02] Speaker 3: net with both quarterbacks, Abuka, I mean that draft pick.
[9:07] Speaker 3: One thing I was taught a long time ago is
[9:10] Speaker 3: at the time they drafted him, you're like, well, they
[9:11] Speaker 3: got Mike Evans and Chris Godwin's coming back, they got hot,
[9:14] Speaker 3: and they got multiple running backs. Why do they need
[9:16] Speaker 3: a weapon? Because a position of strength can become a
[9:20] Speaker 3: position of weakness with an injury or two. Look at
[9:22] Speaker 3: the Chargers best offensive line in the league. Now you're
[9:24] Speaker 3: looking like, who are these guys playing tackle for him?
[9:27] Speaker 3: Injuries happen. I mean, this guy, I don't want to
[9:29] Speaker 3: say saving their season, but you know, Godwin's been out
[9:33] Speaker 3: and then he comes back, and then Evans gets hurt
[9:35] Speaker 3: and this guy. Find me a better rookie right now
[9:37] Speaker 3: in the NFL than the Mecca he's been Cooley.
[9:41] Speaker 1: Remember a couple of years ago, of course you do.
[9:43] Speaker 1: Atlanta drafted Robinson, Jon Robinson, the running back, and I
[9:46] Speaker 1: had a GM say he's a Danny and Tomlinson. There's
[9:49] Speaker 1: no flaw, good teammate, good blocker, everything. Ibuka because he
[9:54] Speaker 1: wasn't like a four to three guy doesn't go in
[9:58] Speaker 1: the top you know, seven or eight. But I had
[10:01] Speaker 1: an executive in the league say he's a flawless receiver, routes, teammate, toughness,
[10:06] Speaker 1: catch hands, He's like, there's just no flaw. But he'll
[10:10] Speaker 1: drop because he's not huge, and he's not you know,
[10:13] Speaker 1: he doesn't have a unicorn body type, and he's not
[10:15] Speaker 1: a complete burner. He is just a great football player.
[10:19] Speaker 1: I mean, he is open, he doesn't drop it, he
[10:21] Speaker 1: runs great. He runs ten year veteran routes. And Seattle's
[10:25] Speaker 1: secondary is good, Scale's defense is good, and they torched
[10:29] Speaker 1: it today.
[10:30] Speaker 3: I would say the same thing about JSN also happened
[10:33] Speaker 3: to be an Ohio State guy. I mean, I look
[10:35] Speaker 3: at the numbers right now. They combined for fifteen catches,
[10:37] Speaker 3: almost three hundred yards and multiple touchdowns. But both those
[10:40] Speaker 3: guys are good examples right. Neither of them would go
[10:43] Speaker 3: in the top ten because they're not quite big enough.
[10:45] Speaker 3: They're more slot receivers. Like no, they can do everything.
[10:48] Speaker 3: They can play inside, they can play outside.
[10:50] Speaker 2: You know what they do.
[10:50] Speaker 3: They get open every single play. Elite players, elite character
[10:54] Speaker 3: guys like you said, elite teammates, and sometimes a wide receiver. Right,
[10:57] Speaker 3: and you've been on this for decades, the little diva ish.
[11:00] Speaker 3: These guys are rare breeds. I mean, these guys are
[11:03] Speaker 3: wired like quarterbacks or safeties or John.
[11:06] Speaker 1: I think a lot of it John is because when
[11:09] Speaker 1: you are as big as DK Metcalf, he was that
[11:12] Speaker 1: big in the seventh grade, he was the biggest, strongest
[11:15] Speaker 1: kid and everybody was in. All of them were a
[11:19] Speaker 1: Jackson Smith and Jigbit make a boka. They weren't the
[11:23] Speaker 1: biggest kids, they weren't the fastest kids. They got there
[11:27] Speaker 1: because they had a lot of talent and they worked
[11:29] Speaker 1: their ass off to become great receivers. And I think
[11:32] Speaker 1: something Mike Evans is the rare big, strong guy, but
[11:35] Speaker 1: super humble, hard working Keenan Allen. But Keenan's not a
[11:39] Speaker 1: burner either. A lot of times, the Antonio Browns, the
[11:42] Speaker 1: DK Metcalf, the guys that just are have been gifted.
[11:46] Speaker 1: The fastest kid in every class, Tyreek Hill with probably
[11:49] Speaker 1: the fastest kid in the fourth grade, fifth grade, sixth grade,
[11:52] Speaker 1: and you know things come easy for you. So a
[11:55] Speaker 1: lot of these great receivers, like Larry Fitzgerald, you can
[11:59] Speaker 1: just see the world ethic, you know, like Puka Nakua,
[12:02] Speaker 1: fifth round, Guy amor On Saint Brown. Look at the
[12:04] Speaker 1: best receivers right now in the league, Hookah amor On
[12:08] Speaker 1: Saint Brown, these two rookies. It's a lot of guys
[12:11] Speaker 1: that are talented, but there you'd view them as classic overachievers.
[12:15] Speaker 1: None of them are burners. None of them outside of
[12:17] Speaker 1: Mike Evans, you know, don't walk into a room and
[12:22] Speaker 1: inspire awe. They're just dudes who got some genetic gifts,
[12:28] Speaker 1: work super hard and it's just you know, it's just
[12:31] Speaker 1: like you go find a great attorney. He had smart parents,
[12:34] Speaker 1: you know, he didn't have dummies as parents. But the
[12:36] Speaker 1: truth is he put the effort in. Because there's a
[12:38] Speaker 1: million attorneys, right you got to fight through it. So
[12:41] Speaker 1: I just watched JSN and Abuka and I just look
[12:45] Speaker 1: at to me, you really have to be careful when
[12:49] Speaker 1: drafting wide receivers. I mean, I saw another running back
[12:51] Speaker 1: drop the ball at the goal line today Arizona Tennessee.
[12:54] Speaker 1: Like you watch Arizona Tennessee today. There's talent on the field,
[12:57] Speaker 1: but just not just airs and fumbles. And Kyler Murray
[13:01] Speaker 1: at one point left the game, I'm not even sure
[13:02] Speaker 1: he got hit like Moods and I just watched Tampa
[13:08] Speaker 1: and I watched Seattle, and I see great gms and
[13:11] Speaker 1: a lot of good character guys and a lot of
[13:13] Speaker 1: tough guys and a lot of redemption stories. That was
[13:17] Speaker 1: so much fun.
[13:18] Speaker 3: I also think if you're a defensive coach out there,
[13:22] Speaker 3: like an assistant or a coordinator, it shows you. Obviously,
[13:25] Speaker 3: these offensive coordinators have taken over the league, and rightfully so.
[13:28] Speaker 3: The quarterback's really important. But Todd Bowles is an old
[13:31] Speaker 3: school like a safety from the eighties, right who has
[13:34] Speaker 3: become you know, he was Bruce Arians right hand man
[13:38] Speaker 3: for a long time. He got some experience with the Jets.
[13:40] Speaker 3: Like he's a really good coach, and he's an excellent
[13:43] Speaker 3: defensive coordinator. I've been saying for years, Mike McDonald is
[13:46] Speaker 3: basically Kyle or Sean. He just happens to call defense.
[13:49] Speaker 3: If he was an offensive coordinator, we would speak about
[13:51] Speaker 3: him no differently than we do Kevin O'Connell. But you're
[13:53] Speaker 3: a defensive guy, and you saw today those guys have
[13:56] Speaker 3: empowered their quarterback. I mean, Todd's probably one of the
[14:00] Speaker 3: great blitz callers in league history. You know, Spags has
[14:04] Speaker 3: turned into one Jim Johnson forever. It's a skill and
[14:08] Speaker 3: that call that won them the game because that was
[14:11] Speaker 3: a game and even for a split second when they
[14:13] Speaker 3: had tied the game, I went, Todd's going to allow
[14:17] Speaker 3: them to go for two, when it turned out it
[14:18] Speaker 3: was just Baker holding it up hoping they would give
[14:21] Speaker 3: I think Todd gold. You know, the field goal kicker on.
[14:24] Speaker 3: But that's another thing. I mean in a day and age,
[14:26] Speaker 3: when these field goals are kind of getting blocked. Their
[14:29] Speaker 3: field goal kicker in Tampa, I don't know if the
[14:31] Speaker 3: guy's missed. I mean, he's a game winner after game
[14:33] Speaker 3: winner pretty nails. Also when the guy hit the ground
[14:37] Speaker 3: on essentially the game winning run, probably could have got
[14:40] Speaker 3: a couple more yards.
[14:41] Speaker 2: But you talk about coaching.
[14:43] Speaker 3: Clearly told him in the huddle, if you break this,
[14:45] Speaker 3: it's an outbreaking run if you get near the sideline,
[14:49] Speaker 3: whether it's a first down or not, get to the
[14:51] Speaker 3: ground right. We have seen in college and the pro
[14:54] Speaker 3: sometimes guys like they have a you know, brain fart,
[14:57] Speaker 3: they go out about they save the team a time out.
[15:00] Speaker 3: So it's just just a high level operation. I'm with
[15:03] Speaker 3: you that game. I think Seattle's going nowhere. I mean,
[15:06] Speaker 3: the forty nine ers are four and one, but half
[15:07] Speaker 3: their teams on injured reserve.
[15:09] Speaker 2: Tampa.
[15:10] Speaker 3: I mean it's Tampa forty nine er game next week.
[15:12] Speaker 3: You know, Tampa now has to fly. I mean, what
[15:14] Speaker 3: time are they going to get out of their seven
[15:16] Speaker 3: o'clock Pacific standard time. They won't get home till the
[15:18] Speaker 3: middle of the night. The forty nine ers have this
[15:21] Speaker 3: long break, they're missing a ton of players. That's that's
[15:24] Speaker 3: a huge win for them, though, I mean, that's a
[15:26] Speaker 3: that's a massive go on the road to Seattle.
[15:28] Speaker 2: And forty one.
[15:30] Speaker 1: Todd Bowles struggled with the Jets. Darnold disaster with the Jets,
[15:34] Speaker 1: Davante Adams disaster with the Jets. Aaron Rodgers much better
[15:39] Speaker 1: version of Aaron Rodgers. It's a cesspool, and we'll get
[15:43] Speaker 1: into the Jets lost today, which may have been like
[15:45] Speaker 1: rich co tight level bad think about people aren't only
[15:49] Speaker 1: leaving the Jets and winning, they're flourishing, they lead their division,
[15:52] Speaker 1: they're MVP candidates. That is a bad organization. I remember
[15:57] Speaker 1: when Todd Bowles was with the Jets, you know, and
[16:00] Speaker 1: people would always rip him. He was a little like
[16:02] Speaker 1: Carl Durell UCLA. The first year he didn't even know.
[16:05] Speaker 1: He didn't have much of a persona on the sideline.
[16:07] Speaker 1: He got lost within the sideline. You couldn't find him.
[16:10] Speaker 1: But Todd was always so smart and so thoughtful, and
[16:13] Speaker 1: he was just one of those guys like he didn't
[16:15] Speaker 1: want you know, he was the opposite of Rex Ryan,
[16:17] Speaker 1: like he didn't want any attention. But over the course
[16:20] Speaker 1: of your life, if you do good work and you
[16:24] Speaker 1: just keep your head down, a lot of people get fired.
[16:26] Speaker 1: It doesn't mean anything. You'll be rewarded. Todd Bowles was
[16:29] Speaker 1: too good not to succeed in this league.
[16:32] Speaker 3: Toty with Sam and look at you know, I think
[16:35] Speaker 3: you brought up the two gms. You know, Mike's going
[16:38] Speaker 3: to have a long career. Came from the Ravens. But Todd,
[16:41] Speaker 3: imagine if you would have got a second opportunity with
[16:43] Speaker 3: the Carolina Panthers or some of these franchises. He got
[16:46] Speaker 3: Jason light who anyone in the league will tell you
[16:48] Speaker 3: is easily one of the best champs. Just a high level,
[16:51] Speaker 3: humble guy who's seen it all, worked for everyone that
[16:53] Speaker 3: mattered in the league over the last twenty years. And
[16:56] Speaker 3: their team, like, they have had so many injuries, and
[16:59] Speaker 3: you watched the play, I mean offensively, they're missing their
[17:01] Speaker 3: starting running back and their Hall of Fame wide receiver.
[17:05] Speaker 3: How many points did they just I mean they scored
[17:06] Speaker 3: thirty eight points. That's on the road against Seattle.
[17:10] Speaker 1: Wow, what in Seattle is a Sam Donald fumble and
[17:14] Speaker 1: a Sam Donald pick? And both times he like either
[17:18] Speaker 1: bumped into a teammate or had somebody bump into him
[17:21] Speaker 1: or Seattle could be an undefeated team. So this game
[17:23] Speaker 1: is Seattle's a really good team to the second youngest
[17:26] Speaker 1: offense in the league. So if you're a Seahawks fan,
[17:30] Speaker 1: you got some good years ahead.
[17:31] Speaker 2: You know.
[17:31] Speaker 1: It's also I don't know, I mean, I wouldn't worry
[17:36] Speaker 1: about drafting a quarterback if I'm Seattle. I think they
[17:38] Speaker 1: found I mean, Donald's still young, He's still totally when
[17:42] Speaker 1: he was drafted by the Jets, he was twenty one.
[17:44] Speaker 1: I think he's twenty seven or twenty eight. Now you
[17:46] Speaker 1: have four more five more peak years.
[17:48] Speaker 3: Yeah to me, I mean, I'm sure we'll talk about Collin.
[17:50] Speaker 3: You look around the landscape of college football doesn't look
[17:53] Speaker 3: like a lot of Joe Burrow's coming into the league here.
[17:56] Speaker 3: I would say this, though, Sometimes there's a win win
[17:58] Speaker 3: fit matters. Like I'm way better off as a podcaster
[18:02] Speaker 3: than I was local radio, and we had ties to
[18:04] Speaker 3: the team. It's not Kubiak. Like, they hire Kubiak and
[18:08] Speaker 3: they get rid of Ryan Grubb. Well Tys Simpson and
[18:11] Speaker 3: Alabama are rolling right, and Ryan Grubb much better fit
[18:15] Speaker 3: for college and they get Kubiak, who is more of
[18:18] Speaker 3: a run heavy great for Sam. And it's just worked
[18:21] Speaker 3: out for both parties, right. Kubiak last year fired as well.
[18:24] Speaker 3: Sometimes in football you just get with the right person.
[18:27] Speaker 2: Sam.
[18:27] Speaker 3: Now look at Sam. Now we talk about the Jets
[18:30] Speaker 3: for three straight years. Kyle, Kyle embracism, prety embracism changes
[18:35] Speaker 3: the way we talk about him. Then he gets his
[18:37] Speaker 3: opportunity with Kevin. Now he's in Seattle. I mean, just
[18:40] Speaker 3: flourishing same thing with Baker Mayfield. He goes to Tampa,
[18:44] Speaker 3: gets around Jason Light, gets around to Mike Evans, and
[18:47] Speaker 3: just a more low key environment.
[18:50] Speaker 2: I've been there.
[18:51] Speaker 3: I've never lived there like you, but it's just an
[18:53] Speaker 3: easier place to just kind of ease into things.
[18:56] Speaker 1: Yeah, Baker, the media and Tampa is more supportive. Is
[19:00] Speaker 1: one of those guys that sometimes if he feels like
[19:04] Speaker 1: he has to overcome the GM and the coach, that
[19:07] Speaker 1: he tries too hard. He's very composed. Now he's got
[19:10] Speaker 1: a support system. He's happily married. Baker has nothing to prove.
[19:15] Speaker 1: Everybody knows he's good. He's playing with a very controlled
[19:19] Speaker 1: chip on his shoulder, but it's a good chip on
[19:20] Speaker 1: his shoulder.
[19:21] Speaker 2: I agree.
[19:22] Speaker 1: It's it's it's like he doesn't have to prove anything.
[19:24] Speaker 1: Everybody loves him in Tampa, and in Cleveland, he and
[19:27] Speaker 1: Hugh Jackson battled, and then Freddy Kitchens and then the
[19:29] Speaker 1: GM and and then the media was on his ass
[19:32] Speaker 1: because the Cleveland media is, you know, it's it's it's bitter,
[19:35] Speaker 1: it's it's I don't blame him. Tampa's got trophies. They don't,
[19:39] Speaker 1: so I think it's and people I know they find
[19:41] Speaker 1: this hard to believe, but I root for young people
[19:44] Speaker 1: to succeed. One of my favorite part of the volume
[19:46] Speaker 1: is watching young people at my age. You're young. I
[19:50] Speaker 1: think it's great for Baker. It makes me very happy
[19:52] Speaker 1: that he's kicking butt. Today's show brought to you by

[21:26] Speaker 1: hundred Gambler Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia.
[21:35] Speaker 1: I want to talk about the Colts, Speed the Raiders.
[21:37] Speaker 1: This was my favorite pick of the week. Got this
[21:39] Speaker 1: one forty to six Colt speed the Raiders. I will
[21:43] Speaker 1: die on this hill. I think the Colts have a
[21:46] Speaker 1: top six roster in the league. I love their offensive line.
[21:49] Speaker 1: I think they have stars. I don't care if it's
[21:51] Speaker 1: Pittman Warren. Jonathan Taylor's outstanding. He just doesn't. He's not
[21:56] Speaker 1: a know Saquon Barkley is. You know, you get these
[21:59] Speaker 1: running stylistically, they pop. And Jonathan Taylor was always just
[22:04] Speaker 1: a speed guy out of college. He wasn't shifty. He
[22:07] Speaker 1: was like, oh, like track guy. Just oh behind that
[22:12] Speaker 1: offensive line. I swear to God, John Like, it's just
[22:14] Speaker 1: he three yards before he gets touched. I don't know
[22:19] Speaker 1: what Pete Carroll's fascination. That's nine picks and six games
[22:23] Speaker 1: for Gino in his last six games. I think it's
[22:25] Speaker 1: something like that. Six touchdowns and nine picks this year.
[22:28] Speaker 1: Six touchdowns, nine picks for Gino. That is the Geno
[22:32] Speaker 1: comeback Story's over. It's the opposite of what Pete Carroll likes.
[22:35] Speaker 1: He is so much about clean football. Run, run the game,
[22:40] Speaker 1: run the ball. I think the Raiders are just a
[22:43] Speaker 1: big work in progress. When Colton Miller gets hurt O line,
[22:47] Speaker 1: it's just one of the worst five in the league.
[22:49] Speaker 1: But you look at the Colts. I mean the Chiefs
[22:52] Speaker 1: will brib beat the Jags tomorrow? I don't know. I
[22:56] Speaker 1: look at the Colts like I look at Tampa. Now,
[22:58] Speaker 1: Baker's better than Daniel Joe Ownes, but coaches who some
[23:03] Speaker 1: people started doubting, you know, like stiking with Anthony Richardson.
[23:07] Speaker 1: Oh Stichen's lost his magic. But that Tampa roster when healthy,
[23:11] Speaker 1: that Colt roster, I know, they're a middle of the country,
[23:14] Speaker 1: flyover country. I think the culture good, I really do.
[23:20] Speaker 3: DJ had to pass a touchdown where he rolled out
[23:23] Speaker 3: and everyone's gonna be it's the Raiders. It's not about
[23:25] Speaker 3: the opponent. Where he was just on the move guy
[23:28] Speaker 3: in the back of the end zone. He split it
[23:30] Speaker 3: through a defender. You know, I've always compared him to
[23:32] Speaker 3: Alex Smith. He's got a better arm than Alex Smith,
[23:35] Speaker 3: no question. His arm actually is better than I thought.
[23:38] Speaker 3: And sometimes it just takes you with a credible offense
[23:41] Speaker 3: to really get to see that arm talent. It's pretty
[23:44] Speaker 3: You watch Baker and Samuel like these guys can sling it.
[23:46] Speaker 3: You're watching Daniel Jones in twenty twenty five, I would
[23:50] Speaker 3: have said forever. He's got an average to below average arm,
[23:52] Speaker 3: Like his arm is more than strong enough. He's not
[23:55] Speaker 3: Josh Allen, but it's he's he's even that thing in there,
[23:58] Speaker 3: and I'm a big guy to me. The Warren pick
[24:02] Speaker 3: looks fantastic. He has been easily one of the best
[24:04] Speaker 3: rookies in the league. I mean, obviously the Raiders are bad,
[24:08] Speaker 3: but I would say the Colts, John, I think the
[24:11] Speaker 3: Colts can win a playoff game. I mean, I think
[24:13] Speaker 3: the Colts can be a factor in the AFC, especially
[24:16] Speaker 3: now it's definitely opening more up right.
[24:19] Speaker 1: They are the most efficient offense in the league. They
[24:23] Speaker 1: went eight for ten on third down, so they become
[24:26] Speaker 1: an incredibly efficient offense. John, They had the ball only
[24:28] Speaker 1: twenty six minutes. They scored forty points. No offense in
[24:31] Speaker 1: this league is more efficient.
[24:32] Speaker 2: I know.
[24:32] Speaker 1: Going into the Rams game, Daniel Jones is twenty to
[24:34] Speaker 1: twenty nine. So it's like we look at Baker and Sam.
[24:38] Speaker 1: I mean, it's really the store this year is the
[24:41] Speaker 1: story of redemption. I mean, Baker leads his division. Sam's great.
[24:44] Speaker 1: Daniel Jones, it's.
[24:50] Speaker 3: I do wonder if you've got Shane Stike in over
[24:52] Speaker 3: cocktails and Ballard if they knew, like when they truly
[24:58] Speaker 3: was it a week into training camp?
[25:00] Speaker 2: This isn't even a close competition? Did they know before
[25:02] Speaker 2: training camp? Just base?
[25:05] Speaker 1: I think they did. I had listen. I was talking
[25:08] Speaker 1: to Steve Kime about a year ago and we were
[25:12] Speaker 1: out and I said, what do you make Anthony Richardson?
[25:14] Speaker 1: And Steve Steve said, man, Colin, he said, you got
[25:18] Speaker 1: to be able to hit those layups in the flat
[25:20] Speaker 1: And he said, you know, I looked at some of
[25:22] Speaker 1: the film and he's like, you know, if anybody can
[25:24] Speaker 1: do it, Shane Steiken can fix it. But Kyme and
[25:27] Speaker 1: I were talking about it, and he just said, you know,
[25:30] Speaker 1: if you have to work on that stuff, if you're
[25:32] Speaker 1: spending a lot of practice time on that stuff, it's
[25:34] Speaker 1: really hard. And and because you know generally with with
[25:38] Speaker 1: with Baker, you're you're dealing with high end stuff. Baker
[25:41] Speaker 1: solved all that stuff. With Baker, it's it can be
[25:43] Speaker 1: concepts and defense. You're not worried about the layup stuff.
[25:48] Speaker 1: So and then I talked to somebody else at GM,
[25:51] Speaker 1: an active GM in the league, and he echoed, what
[25:54] Speaker 1: what Steve Kim told me. It's just like gosh, if
[25:57] Speaker 1: you're struggling with the underneath stuff, you know, you're spending
[26:00] Speaker 1: a lot of time on that. You have to spend
[26:02] Speaker 1: so much time on that to get that right. But
[26:04] Speaker 1: then you're not really that's elementary stuff in the league.
[26:07] Speaker 1: You're not dealing with the second and third and fourth
[26:09] Speaker 1: level stuff. You also can't call a game that you
[26:12] Speaker 1: want to call in the NFL. I remember I got
[26:15] Speaker 1: off the phone with this jam in the league and
[26:16] Speaker 1: my take was, well, God, if if I don't trust
[26:19] Speaker 1: a guy to throw it downfield, I can't call the
[26:21] Speaker 1: same game. I just eliminated thirty five percent of the playbook.
[26:23] Speaker 1: So I think with Daniel Jones, you can use the
[26:25] Speaker 1: whole playbook.
[26:26] Speaker 3: That's the difference, Isn't it crazy? You know, the redemption season,
[26:29] Speaker 3: even watching Carson Wentz with Kevin O'Connell, it's like he
[26:33] Speaker 3: actually doesn't look.
[26:34] Speaker 2: That terrible, you know.
[26:36] Speaker 3: I mean it's like this the power of some of
[26:39] Speaker 3: these offensive coordinators. Also, because what are usually offensive coordinators
[26:42] Speaker 3: are head coaches have pretty good skill guys around them,
[26:45] Speaker 3: right Kevin O'Connell. They got a pretty loaded roster, you know,
[26:48] Speaker 3: Shane Stichen that they've invested some picks and some money
[26:51] Speaker 3: into the offensive skill guys. Right, you play for Shanahan,
[26:54] Speaker 3: you play for McVeigh, you play for Lafleora, Like they
[26:57] Speaker 3: emphasize that side of the ball in terms of people,
[27:00] Speaker 3: you know, the wide receivers, the running backs, the tight ends.
[27:03] Speaker 3: These guys look a lot better than some of the
[27:05] Speaker 3: franchise that failed them. I mean, you go back to
[27:07] Speaker 3: the Giants, I mean, Daniel Jones was horrendous. I get
[27:10] Speaker 3: asked a lot like, is this gonna if Daniel Jones?
[27:13] Speaker 3: I mean, is in the MVP conversation this team wins
[27:16] Speaker 3: thirteen or fourteen games? Clear, the Giants aren't. What were
[27:19] Speaker 3: they gonna win five games? And listen, it was time
[27:21] Speaker 3: for a breakup. I didn't blame them. It was not working.
[27:24] Speaker 3: But this is one of those things like, oh, ultimately
[27:26] Speaker 3: Saquon Barkley is much better with the.
[27:28] Speaker 2: Great offensive line.
[27:29] Speaker 3: But if i'm you know, the Giants ownership. I paid
[27:33] Speaker 3: my head coach who's the play caller. I know he's
[27:36] Speaker 3: kind of bounced around being the play caller, but he's
[27:38] Speaker 3: an offensive guy to fix that position. And this guy
[27:42] Speaker 3: we had this guy, Hell, we paid this guy and
[27:44] Speaker 3: then he goes to another offensive coordinator as the head
[27:46] Speaker 3: coach and looks like Sam Darnold's Baker Mayfield.
[27:49] Speaker 2: How's that possible? You know, how can that happen?
[27:52] Speaker 3: This guy is going to get I mean, Shane Psychen
[27:55] Speaker 3: and Chris Baller are going to get contract extensions. I
[27:57] Speaker 3: would imagine before the playoffs start. It's going that well.
[28:00] Speaker 1: All right, Danny parkins, as he is prone to do
[28:03] Speaker 1: at least once a month, sometimes more. FS one is
[28:07] Speaker 1: joining us and it's a day of breaking news. There
[28:09] Speaker 1: are multiple reports. This is crazy. Sometimes you don't predict something,
[28:13] Speaker 1: but you're not surprised when it happens. Like your buddy
[28:15] Speaker 1: who drives too fast, you wouldn't predict he gets into
[28:18] Speaker 1: a wrec but if it happens, you know, bangs into
[28:20] Speaker 1: a fire, hyderate and you'd be like, well, Bob drives
[28:22] Speaker 1: a little fast. Bill Belichick may not last the season.
[28:26] Speaker 1: They're working on a buyout. And you know, first of all,
[28:32] Speaker 1: whenever you get a friends and family staff, he and
[28:35] Speaker 1: Mike Lombardi kids on the staff, highly compensated. Never a
[28:39] Speaker 1: huge fan of that, but I think sometimes we look
[28:45] Speaker 1: at college as this inferior product of the NFL, and
[28:48] Speaker 1: in terms of like talent. It is, but it is
[28:52] Speaker 1: a really hard trail to navigate. Donors, boosters, nil ad.
[29:01] Speaker 1: When you're an NFL coach, you have an impulsive owner,
[29:05] Speaker 1: then you kind of just do what you want to do.
[29:07] Speaker 1: I mean, Brett Veach is not banging down a door
[29:09] Speaker 1: to tell Andy what to run on. Second before, I
[29:12] Speaker 1: could argue there are more land mines for a college
[29:15] Speaker 1: coach than a pro coach, And I just don't think
[29:18] Speaker 1: Bill at this point has the tolerance for it. That's
[29:21] Speaker 1: kind of my take. He just he's just not built
[29:24] Speaker 1: for college football. I don't think he ever wanted to
[29:29] Speaker 1: be there in the first place.
[29:32] Speaker 2: I said it at the time, like I was like,
[29:33] Speaker 2: I'm gonna be the last person who believes that this
[29:38] Speaker 2: is going to actually happen, Like it all felt beneath him,
[29:42] Speaker 2: Like I remember when he was photographed at a Chick
[29:46] Speaker 2: fil A in Atlanta after his interview with Arthur Blank,
[29:50] Speaker 2: Like that was two hiring cycles ago, and then he won,
[29:53] Speaker 2: and then he did all of the media jobs and
[29:56] Speaker 2: he was hoping to get another NFL job and it
[29:59] Speaker 2: never came, and so he's like, well, I guess coaching
[30:02] Speaker 2: in college is better than coach than doing media, and
[30:06] Speaker 2: I'm sure for a lifelong coach that is correct. But
[30:11] Speaker 2: then you saw the buyout reports that it dipped down
[30:13] Speaker 2: to just a million bucks. It's like, oh, he wants
[30:16] Speaker 2: to leave open any path to get back to the NFL.
[30:20] Speaker 2: He never wanted to be there in the first place.
[30:23] Speaker 2: And then on top of it, the embarrassment with whatever
[30:27] Speaker 2: you think about, the girlfriend situation, the reporting around that,
[30:31] Speaker 2: the losing, and then that's all before any of the
[30:36] Speaker 2: things that you're talking about, which are of course totally
[30:39] Speaker 2: true and valid. But like, if you didn't really want
[30:42] Speaker 2: to be there in the first place, and then you
[30:45] Speaker 2: start getting mocked for being there, and then you start losing,
[30:49] Speaker 2: and you've got eighteen year old kids mouthing off to you,
[30:52] Speaker 2: like he has to be miserable right now, Colin.
[30:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, And like Labarti's an NFL guy. Charlie Weiss had
[30:58] Speaker 1: some early success at Notre Dame. But Charlie has got
[31:02] Speaker 1: kind of that gruff Northeast personality, and that's fine. Some
[31:05] Speaker 1: of those guys lived out there for ten years. I
[31:07] Speaker 1: liked a lot of guys like that. They're really bottom line,
[31:09] Speaker 1: they're kind of gruff, they're kind of Kurt, But you
[31:12] Speaker 1: know Carolina, the Carolinas is different. Everybody's got a little y'all.
[31:16] Speaker 1: It's you know what I mean, like Roy Williams, Dean Smith.
[31:19] Speaker 1: There's a certain sensibility to it, and I just it's
[31:24] Speaker 1: a weird fit to me. Like I think I've told
[31:27] Speaker 1: you this before. Maybe I'm obsessed with this, but I'm
[31:31] Speaker 1: always surprised when very success, When very successful, seemingly bright
[31:38] Speaker 1: older men can't aren't self aware, Like Bobby Knight, Bobby,
[31:45] Speaker 1: you gotta do the one and done. Everybody's doing it.
[31:49] Speaker 1: You're going to get inferior players just too stubborn. And
[31:52] Speaker 1: Bill Belichick, Bill, you can't spit on Robert Kraft like
[31:58] Speaker 1: he's an owner. Owners are tight, don't You're not going
[32:03] Speaker 1: to win. It'd be like me going against the Murdochs,
[32:07] Speaker 1: like just be a good employee, work your butt off.
[32:10] Speaker 1: If they do something you don't like, eat it, deal
[32:12] Speaker 1: with it.
[32:13] Speaker 2: You know.
[32:13] Speaker 1: It's like I just sometimes I see these older men
[32:18] Speaker 1: and they they get stuck in their ways. We all
[32:20] Speaker 1: know in our twenties you kind of have to follow
[32:22] Speaker 1: in line. Maybe it's the wealth of maybe it's the
[32:26] Speaker 1: I don't give a damn. But I mean the idea
[32:29] Speaker 1: that he wouldn't let he wouldn't like tweet Drake may
[32:33] Speaker 1: you know stuff because he was a patriot, Like does that?
[32:36] Speaker 1: I don't know, have you ever thought about that? We've
[32:38] Speaker 1: seen like the Tony larus Is, the Belichicks, the Bobby Knights.
[32:41] Speaker 1: You're like guys rigid punctures, brilliant, don't do it?
[32:46] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean Barack Obama said it recently. I mean,
[32:52] Speaker 2: and obviously he's a great orator, but he said something
[32:54] Speaker 2: like eighty percent of the world's problems evolve old men
[32:58] Speaker 2: hanging on who are of death and insignificance. Like there's
[33:03] Speaker 2: something to that. And we've got like an age minimum
[33:08] Speaker 2: for you to be president. I'd be interested in an
[33:10] Speaker 2: age maximum, you know, like like a sweet spot there
[33:14] Speaker 2: for just like you want the people who are governing
[33:17] Speaker 2: on the things in our world like it to like
[33:19] Speaker 2: maybe impacts them. And so yeah, I think like not
[33:23] Speaker 2: too come across as two ageists here, but because there
[33:27] Speaker 2: are clearly exceptions to the rule. But I didn't want
[33:31] Speaker 2: I would have wanted my NFL team to hire Pete Carroll.
[33:34] Speaker 2: And I know you disagreed on that, and you like
[33:36] Speaker 2: Pete Carroll, and by all accounts, Pete Carroll is like
[33:38] Speaker 2: a young mid seventies guy.
[33:40] Speaker 1: Would I say it was an exception?
[33:42] Speaker 2: Sure, and that's and that's fine, and I'll and i'll
[33:45] Speaker 2: you know better than I do, swall grant you that one.
[33:47] Speaker 2: But like the Bears had an opening. If you told
[33:50] Speaker 2: me it was Ben Johnson or Pete Carroll, I'll take
[33:53] Speaker 2: Ben Johnson eleven times out of ten, even though he's
[33:56] Speaker 2: not proven as a head coach, and Pete Carroll is.
[33:58] Speaker 2: But I'd be betting on upset. I'd be betting on
[34:01] Speaker 2: ability to connect with young players. I'd be betting on
[34:04] Speaker 2: a longer runway where he could stay there. So yeah,
[34:07] Speaker 2: I think that it's a real danger for a ton
[34:10] Speaker 2: of people that they just get caught in their way.
[34:14] Speaker 2: They get stuck in their ways and they don't evolve.
[34:17] Speaker 2: You know, there was a reporting that Bill Belichick was
[34:20] Speaker 2: pitching these kids that like North Carolina was gonna be
[34:22] Speaker 2: like the thirty third NFL team. That just seems laughable now.
[34:28] Speaker 2: It's it seems so laughable that he thought that he
[34:32] Speaker 2: could just show up in Chapel Hill with inferior talent
[34:35] Speaker 2: and just be a pipeline to the to the pros
[34:38] Speaker 2: plug from my book by the way, pipeline, the.
[34:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, the whole thing. You know, there's an there's a
[34:49] Speaker 1: serious argument to me made. I've said this before. Men
[34:54] Speaker 1: are bad at exits. We have a million pickup lines,
[34:57] Speaker 1: but we break up with somebody and don't even text.
[35:00] Speaker 1: We can get into wars, we can always rationalize getting
[35:03] Speaker 1: into wars. We can never get out of them. Men
[35:05] Speaker 1: are bad at exes. And I when somebody goes through something,
[35:12] Speaker 1: I put myself on that spot. I think what would
[35:13] Speaker 1: I would have done? And I look when Brady retired
[35:16] Speaker 1: in New England, and my take, just for selfishly, for legendary,
[35:23] Speaker 1: for legacy preservation, I would have said, listen, I owe
[35:31] Speaker 1: the Crafts one year of stability, and I'm going to
[35:35] Speaker 1: root for Tom Brady harder than anybody's ever rooted for
[35:39] Speaker 1: a player. Will never be the same franchise without Tom.
[35:43] Speaker 1: I'm going to stay for one year to just get
[35:46] Speaker 1: some stability here and get people kind of ready, and
[35:49] Speaker 1: then I'm going to retire. And Bill has kind of
[35:51] Speaker 1: a walk off here because if you remember, they get
[35:54] Speaker 1: Cam Newton. He praised Cam Newton. Cam was past his prime.
[35:58] Speaker 1: But you know it was okay, here comes mac Jones.
[36:01] Speaker 1: You know there was a real moment in time. Bill
[36:05] Speaker 1: didn't need the money and he knew the team wasn't
[36:08] Speaker 1: as good, and then he kind of stayed in state.
[36:10] Speaker 1: In fact, I made I said this on the air, Danny.
[36:14] Speaker 1: I said, I don't think this is true, but knowing
[36:17] Speaker 1: Bill's petty and grudge holding personality, go to that last
[36:22] Speaker 1: draft that Bill controlled slowest team in the league, two
[36:26] Speaker 1: kickers and three interior alignment. It was like he was saying,
[36:30] Speaker 1: I'm going to leave you with an awful roster. I
[36:34] Speaker 1: mean they need they At one point they drafted three
[36:38] Speaker 1: guards like two kickers and they had no speed. And
[36:43] Speaker 1: I think I really do if you look at that
[36:45] Speaker 1: last draft, when Belichick knew he was in trouble, it
[36:50] Speaker 1: was the decisions Matt Patricia, offensive coordinator. It was like
[36:54] Speaker 1: he wanted to humiliate. He knew his legacy was set.
[36:57] Speaker 1: He wanted to humiliate the franchise. I know it sounds
[37:00] Speaker 1: crazy and I don't believe it's true, but it's not
[37:03] Speaker 1: the nuttiest thing I've ever said.
[37:05] Speaker 2: Well, no, that's a high bar to clear. Yeah, I mean,
[37:11] Speaker 2: he the Patricia the drafts, Like I think there's like
[37:16] Speaker 2: a real legitimate argument to make when you look at
[37:20] Speaker 2: the drafts and beyond the last one of like Bill
[37:22] Speaker 2: Belichick as an evaluator of talent leaves a ton to
[37:26] Speaker 2: be desired.
[37:27] Speaker 1: Oh God, on the offensive side, that's kind right exactly,
[37:31] Speaker 1: And so he is.
[37:33] Speaker 2: Someone asked me earlier, do you think this impacts his legacy,
[37:37] Speaker 2: because you kind of hinted at that. I don't think so. Like,
[37:41] Speaker 2: I think that it's humiliating right now. It's this is
[37:46] Speaker 2: very embarrassing. It feels beneath him. And I thought that,
[37:49] Speaker 2: like I said, I said it on FS one when
[37:52] Speaker 2: I was doing Breakfast Ball. I was like, I don't
[37:54] Speaker 2: believe that he's going to go to North Carolina because
[37:56] Speaker 2: I don't believe he wants to do it. And now
[37:57] Speaker 2: he's just kind of seeing it through and it's clearly going.
[38:00] Speaker 2: But like in twenty years, when we're talking about the
[38:03] Speaker 2: greatest coaches of all time, he's gonna be on everyone's
[38:07] Speaker 2: mount rushmore. Like that's his legacy is secure. We don't
[38:12] Speaker 2: talk about my Wizards, we don't talk about EMMITTT. Smith
[38:16] Speaker 2: with the Cardinals, Like this is like a of the
[38:19] Speaker 2: moment thing. Now if you want to have the like
[38:24] Speaker 2: who was more responsible for the Patriots dynasty? Brady or Belichick?
[38:29] Speaker 2: Pretty clear? Pretty clear, Pretty clear, even though like some
[38:32] Speaker 2: of the earlier Super Bowls before Brady was really Brady,
[38:36] Speaker 2: those were more Belichick, but like the majority of them
[38:39] Speaker 2: were more Tom than Bill. And then obviously Bill won
[38:42] Speaker 2: the or Tom won the breakup with what happened in Tampa.
[38:45] Speaker 2: So like, if you're having that specific legacy conversation Brady
[38:50] Speaker 2: over Belichick, I think now is going to be not
[38:53] Speaker 2: a majority opinion, Like I think it's going to be
[38:55] Speaker 2: a consensus, but it's like greatest ball coach of coaches
[39:01] Speaker 2: of your lifetime. Like he's on one hand, I saw
[39:14] Speaker 2: you at a Jared Goff. You have him as a
[39:17] Speaker 2: Hall of famer.
[39:17] Speaker 1: No, I said, he will be a Hall of Famer absolutely,
[39:21] Speaker 1: you know, since twenty seventeen, so that's going to be
[39:24] Speaker 1: nine years. He's like first in passing touchdowns first, Like
[39:29] Speaker 1: I think people are shocked he's had seven offensive coordinators.
[39:33] Speaker 1: He was great with six, Like he works with everybody,
[39:36] Speaker 1: and I think to me, that's always been it. It'd
[39:39] Speaker 1: be one thing if we're in TV and you had
[39:41] Speaker 1: this one great producer and the rest of your career
[39:44] Speaker 1: eight shows bombed. It's like, Okay, who was your partner?
[39:47] Speaker 1: Who was your producer? Seven coordinators? Six He's crushed, and
[39:52] Speaker 1: it's like, guys his I always think Hall of Fames
[39:56] Speaker 1: are great ten years. That's why I never understood the
[40:00] Speaker 1: Jim Rice. I know he wasn't he was difficult with
[40:02] Speaker 1: the press or something. But Jim Rice, when I was
[40:04] Speaker 1: a kid, was the best right handed American League power
[40:07] Speaker 1: hitter for a decade. Like it was just like he
[40:09] Speaker 1: was one of two. He and Fred Linn were the
[40:11] Speaker 1: Red Sox and like people went back and forth, and
[40:13] Speaker 1: I'm like, what ten years of greatness is hard for
[40:19] Speaker 1: your your peak maybe eight physical years. And so if
[40:23] Speaker 1: you look at Jared Goff, he has eight great years. Well,
[40:26] Speaker 1: this front office is so good. Amaran Saint Brown's in
[40:29] Speaker 1: his prime. The running backs one's young, one's not that old.
[40:33] Speaker 1: Panay Seoul has just entered his prime. He's going to
[40:37] Speaker 1: have three to four big years with Detroit or somebody.
[40:42] Speaker 1: Jared's a Hall of Famer and he's he's made no enemies.
[40:45] Speaker 1: Even McVeigh feels guilty for letting him go.
[40:48] Speaker 2: Well, definitely definitely seems like a very nice guy. Yeah,
[40:50] Speaker 2: and I mean Laporta and Jamison Williams are young, you know,
[40:53] Speaker 2: so yeah, he's got got plenty, plenty of young talent.
[40:56] Speaker 2: The numbers are ridiculous. The only thing I would say
[41:00] Speaker 2: is because I love the Lions and they have been
[41:03] Speaker 2: my Super Bowl pick three years in a row, so
[41:06] Speaker 2: eventually maybe I'll get it right. It's not just the
[41:11] Speaker 2: stats thing, you know, like it's it's it's not like
[41:15] Speaker 2: he does he will need to hoist the trophy because,
[41:19] Speaker 2: like I think Stafford is in, because Stafford is going
[41:22] Speaker 2: to finish sixth all time in passing Yeah, Stafford's in.
[41:27] Speaker 2: I agree, and he has the trophy. But if Stafford
[41:31] Speaker 2: didn't have the trophy very hard, probably not, that's what.
[41:35] Speaker 2: But he's got numbers that are force. I mean, obviously
[41:39] Speaker 2: we'll see where Jared Goff ends up, but like it's
[41:41] Speaker 2: not like a guarantee that Jared Goff ends up top
[41:43] Speaker 2: five all time in passing yards.
[41:45] Speaker 1: He might, but it helps. It does help, even though
[41:48] Speaker 1: it's not linear. It does help that Goff is better
[41:52] Speaker 1: with the Lions than Stafford was.
[41:55] Speaker 2: Yes, yes, I mean you look at it.
[41:57] Speaker 1: And you're like god Goff crushed and Stafford now one
[42:00] Speaker 1: of them, Yes, the best young GM in the sport
[42:04] Speaker 1: or one of the best gms. So it's not apples
[42:06] Speaker 1: orange apples, right, it's different. But I do think there's
[42:10] Speaker 1: you know, that's just one of those things you look
[42:12] Speaker 1: at and you're like, well, golf one big in Detroit,
[42:14] Speaker 1: and we all know it's same ownership, right, you know,
[42:18] Speaker 1: quirky head coach and Dan Campbell he didn't have McVeigh.
[42:21] Speaker 2: Yeah, but I think that like like in a vacuum
[42:26] Speaker 2: in their prime starting a team, right Stafford, Yeah, right, exactly,
[42:34] Speaker 2: exactly and so and again that's also not the criteria
[42:37] Speaker 2: for the Hall of Fame. But I remember a GM
[42:40] Speaker 2: was like, my job is to evaluate individual talent amidst
[42:45] Speaker 2: the team sport. Like that's like the job of the
[42:48] Speaker 2: football general manager, right, and so like it's why I've
[42:51] Speaker 2: always been a big Herbert guy and like it just
[42:54] Speaker 2: I watch him and no, not everyone is a free agent.
[42:57] Speaker 2: We are not doing this to start a team. But
[42:59] Speaker 2: I'm like, that guy is one of the five best
[43:01] Speaker 2: at the position. He just doesn't have you don't have
[43:04] Speaker 2: the trophy case for it. Stafford in his prime always
[43:08] Speaker 2: felt like the same type of thing to me, Like
[43:11] Speaker 2: I would love to give Howie Roseman the ability to
[43:15] Speaker 2: build a team around Matt Stafford, to give Brett Veach,
[43:18] Speaker 2: to give Brad Holmes the general manager of the Lions,
[43:20] Speaker 2: like the built to build around the great quarterback because
[43:24] Speaker 2: he is a Hall of Fame talent. And now I
[43:27] Speaker 2: do think that Stafford has enough of a resume that
[43:29] Speaker 2: he will ultimately get in golf. I think is going
[43:32] Speaker 2: to need a trophy, like if he has regular season
[43:35] Speaker 2: success and counting stats. The Pro Football Hall of Fame
[43:38] Speaker 2: is really tough to get into, so I think they're
[43:40] Speaker 2: gonna have to break through and start winning in the playoffs.
[43:43] Speaker 1: I want to end with this because it's kind of
[43:45] Speaker 1: a think piece. Derek Thompson writes for The Atlantic. He's
[43:48] Speaker 1: one of my favorite writers. He's got He's kind of
[43:49] Speaker 1: a theorist. He loves new data, he loves culture changes.
[43:55] Speaker 1: And last week he was talking and he acknowledges he
[44:00] Speaker 1: his center left and he admits it. You know, he
[44:03] Speaker 1: doesn't hide it. But I think he's a really interesting read.
[44:06] Speaker 1: I think he does a podcast for The Ringer. We
[44:08] Speaker 1: at the Volume, we weren't really interested in him we
[44:10] Speaker 1: didn't reach out, but he was one of the two
[44:12] Speaker 1: or three people that we were just fascinated with. And
[44:14] Speaker 1: he and it's really an interesting thing he brought up
[44:18] Speaker 1: this week. He was complaining about conservatives doing something and
[44:22] Speaker 1: he goes, but what equally drives me crazy is that
[44:27] Speaker 1: progresses in California. Many are against WAIMO and their take
[44:33] Speaker 1: is we are unemploying people, that this is not good
[44:36] Speaker 1: for jobs. And his argument was time out. We do
[44:40] Speaker 1: not want to be the party that's anti tech. The
[44:43] Speaker 1: Conservatives are anti science. We can't be anti tech. And
[44:49] Speaker 1: I read that and I thought it is fascinating. I
[44:51] Speaker 1: used to live in Oregon, very liberal, and gas stations
[44:55] Speaker 1: you can't pump your own gas. And Oregon's theory is
[44:59] Speaker 1: it keeps thousands of people employed in the state of
[45:02] Speaker 1: Oregon and it rains a lot. So I kind of
[45:06] Speaker 1: like somebody pumping my dass, to.
[45:08] Speaker 2: Be honest with you.
[45:09] Speaker 1: And by the way, gas stations are kind of dirty.
[45:12] Speaker 2: You know, you're.
[45:12] Speaker 1: Touching stuff, So it's like I always kind of thought
[45:15] Speaker 1: it was cool. You talk to the guy or gal
[45:17] Speaker 1: and it's like that's good. So where would you fall
[45:20] Speaker 1: on this? It absolutely will create job losts. I mean,
[45:26] Speaker 1: there's no question uber drivers are in big trouble in California,
[45:29] Speaker 1: because I'm telling you where I live. Way Mo cars
[45:32] Speaker 1: are everywhere, Danny and I prefer them. Nothing against the driver,
[45:37] Speaker 1: but no driver.
[45:39] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[45:39] Speaker 1: And by the way, nobody has stale candy. Nobody wants
[45:43] Speaker 1: to ask me about the eagles. I get in the car,
[45:46] Speaker 1: it gets there fast, and I'm a way Mo guy.
[45:50] Speaker 2: Wow.
[45:51] Speaker 1: Then tens of thousands of people could lose their jobs.
[45:55] Speaker 1: As somebody you acknowledge your center left. What do you
[45:59] Speaker 1: do if you're a Democrat in California?
[46:02] Speaker 2: So on.
[46:04] Speaker 1: My take is I'm pro technology, and nobody has a
[46:07] Speaker 1: right to a job. I grew up in a fishing village,
[46:10] Speaker 1: and because the state of Washington limited salmon distribution or
[46:15] Speaker 1: the number of salmon you could catch, salmon, fishermen lost work.
[46:18] Speaker 1: And my stepdad, who was a very much kind of
[46:21] Speaker 1: a man of nature and a man of earth and
[46:24] Speaker 1: a fisherman, and I used to argue with him, I'm
[46:27] Speaker 1: going into broadcasting. If radio die tomorrow, i don't have
[46:30] Speaker 1: a right to a job. And so it was like,
[46:33] Speaker 1: you know, just because you're a fisherman. At twenty eight,
[46:35] Speaker 1: doesn't mean you want at forty eight. Like states have legislation,
[46:38] Speaker 1: they protect our earth. So I'm for way MO, which
[46:43] Speaker 1: means I'm kind of four job loss. Where do you land?
[46:47] Speaker 2: Yeah, that's a good one, I think in I am
[46:53] Speaker 2: pro innovation and I am and like, there's a lot
[46:58] Speaker 2: of problems with capitalism, but it might be it's the
[47:00] Speaker 2: best we got, Like the kind of a play on
[47:03] Speaker 2: that the old you know, democracy is the worst form
[47:05] Speaker 2: of government except for all the other ways, you know,
[47:09] Speaker 2: and so like, are there problems with it? Yes, are
[47:12] Speaker 2: there unintended consequences, absolutely, But I don't think you want
[47:16] Speaker 2: to be in the business of stifling innovation because what's
[47:22] Speaker 2: the next thing that that would Like I'd be thrilled
[47:24] Speaker 2: if there was some level of innovation that made pediatric
[47:30] Speaker 2: cancer doctors have to go extinct because we had solved it,
[47:34] Speaker 2: you know, And so like it's the type of thing
[47:35] Speaker 2: where like, just in general, innovation is good, Like the
[47:40] Speaker 2: easy Pass put tollbooth workers out of business, but it's
[47:45] Speaker 2: objectively better. We don't have to stop, we don't have
[47:49] Speaker 2: to keep coins in our car. We can just keep
[47:53] Speaker 2: going on our drive. But it put people out of
[47:56] Speaker 2: business for a better way of life. So I've never
[47:59] Speaker 2: been in a driver car before, so I'm glad that
[48:03] Speaker 2: I wouldn't be the test case for it. So like
[48:05] Speaker 2: I'm glad to hear that you're doing it and it's
[48:07] Speaker 2: going well. But like I think that type off if
[48:12] Speaker 2: they can do it, and they clearly can, and I
[48:15] Speaker 2: I'm aware of WIMO and I'm aware of the fact
[48:18] Speaker 2: that this is becoming more and more popular. Like it's
[48:21] Speaker 2: just going to lead to less auto crashes, It's going
[48:24] Speaker 2: to lead to people being safer, it's gonna lead fewer deaths.
[48:27] Speaker 2: It's gonna lead to fewer deaths. Oh right.
[48:29] Speaker 1: Question, Also, there are safety concerns with women and male
[48:34] Speaker 1: Uber drivers. I mean, that's nothing against Tuber. There have
[48:36] Speaker 1: been lots of lawsuits. You can go back and look
[48:38] Speaker 1: at the history of Uber, and I've been lots of lawsuits.
[48:42] Speaker 1: You eliminate that you eliminate. I mean, there's no question
[48:45] Speaker 1: the number of car desks will plummet in America.
[48:49] Speaker 2: So like that to me, obvious negative is the job loss,
[48:55] Speaker 2: But there are so many also positives that come with
[48:58] Speaker 2: it that that one, to me is not terribly difficult
[49:02] Speaker 2: to be Like, yeah, I'm fine with it. I'm fine
[49:05] Speaker 2: with it. And in general, again, like I there's this
[49:09] Speaker 2: there was a story arc in The Wire, The Wired
[49:11] Speaker 2: Him He's the greatest television show ever, And that show
[49:15] Speaker 2: came out twenty years ago, twenty plus years ago about
[49:19] Speaker 2: like the the dock workers and how they could unload
[49:24] Speaker 2: and offload ships like cargo ships, big containers that weigh
[49:27] Speaker 2: you know, thousands of tons and all that stuff. And
[49:30] Speaker 2: there were the steve Indors were like, that's gonna put
[49:34] Speaker 2: us out of jobs. And they're like, yeah, but you're
[49:38] Speaker 2: not going to die on the job. And then the
[49:39] Speaker 2: steved Door's like, but I'd rather get injured on the
[49:42] Speaker 2: job and have a job. But that's not that's not
[49:45] Speaker 2: the point. The guy who developed the technology to offload
[49:48] Speaker 2: the cargo ship faster and more efficiently, no stealing, no injuries,
[49:54] Speaker 2: that guy created that company to do it. That was innovation,
[49:57] Speaker 2: it was progress, moving it forward. And so so it sucks.
[50:01] Speaker 2: And by the way, you mentioned the radio thing. I'm thirty.
[50:05] Speaker 2: I turned thirty nine in two weeks. I have no
[50:08] Speaker 2: idea what the next twenty years of media is going
[50:10] Speaker 2: to look like, and like what my career in this industry,
[50:14] Speaker 2: Cable television, cord cutting, podcasting. It keeps evolving. We have
[50:21] Speaker 2: to keep evolving in our field. A lot of people
[50:23] Speaker 2: have to keep evolving in theirs. So it doesn't I
[50:26] Speaker 2: feel bad for the individual who would lose their job
[50:30] Speaker 2: enough to make me anti innovation and progress.
[50:34] Speaker 1: I mean, listen, I did local TV sports that kind
[50:37] Speaker 1: of dried up.
[50:38] Speaker 2: That's a good example. That was a job that in Chicago.
[50:43] Speaker 1: Using a million dollars a year twenty years ago.
[50:45] Speaker 2: Correct, correct, exactly. That was a seven figure job into
[50:51] Speaker 2: the first part of the twenty first century. Like Mark
[50:54] Speaker 2: jing Greco, friend of mine in Chicago, legend covered like
[50:58] Speaker 2: the bulls, dynasties and all that. He was still making
[51:01] Speaker 2: north of a million dollars into the two thousands. Now,
[51:04] Speaker 2: the people that have that job low six figures and
[51:08] Speaker 2: nobody watches, you know, it's it's just a completely different ecosystem.
[51:12] Speaker 2: And that's just the that's the way of the world.
[51:15] Speaker 2: So are you are you? You're totally Have you ever
[51:17] Speaker 2: had an issue? By the way, WYMO, the vast majority
[51:21] Speaker 2: of people here have never been in a driver listening
[51:23] Speaker 2: to this has never been in a driverless car.
[51:24] Speaker 1: Yeah, I've been in three They're fantastic and I'm not
[51:28] Speaker 1: I'm not anti Uber. I've spent a lot of money
[51:32] Speaker 1: on Uber, but there is a gap in Uber drivers
[51:37] Speaker 1: and if you go, if you go the lower levels
[51:40] Speaker 1: of Uber. I had an Uber driver because I had
[51:43] Speaker 1: a very short drive recently in Chicago. He pulled up
[51:46] Speaker 1: to my street and stopped in the middle of the street,
[51:51] Speaker 1: didn't pull into my driveway. There were thirty cars as
[51:54] Speaker 1: I walked on the road to get in and like
[51:56] Speaker 1: bowed my head and apologized and yeah, I mean yeah,
[52:00] Speaker 1: And it was the cheapest level of it because it
[52:02] Speaker 1: was like a six minute drive to the train station.
[52:05] Speaker 1: So like weimo, everybody's good, They're all the exact same.
[52:09] Speaker 1: There's no good, bad smelly. I mean, I've gotten into
[52:12] Speaker 1: Uber cars before and the music's loud and it smells
[52:16] Speaker 1: like hygiene issues. It's like it's rare, but it happens. Yeah,
[52:21] Speaker 1: And there's no question. I so I in Chicago, I
[52:26] Speaker 1: take an Uber every day, about a seven to ten
[52:30] Speaker 1: minute drive from where I work to otc OGLEV train station. Yeah,
[52:35] Speaker 1: the gap incompetency is startling. The volume
