[0:06] Speaker 1: Sauce player of the week one hundred and sixteen rush
[0:08] Speaker 1: shars three tds in Seattle's forty one six route over
[0:12] Speaker 1: the Niners. That three rushing touchdowns ties a playoff franchise record.
[0:17] Speaker 1: The original hot Sauce is the perfect balance. I love it.
[0:19] Speaker 1: A Peppers, vinegar, salt wings, nochos burgers. Hit any tailgate
[0:23] Speaker 1: food with the bold, handcrafted flavor of the original Louisiana
[0:26] Speaker 1: Hot Sauce. That's Louisiana Hot. Buy you some, all right.
[0:36] Speaker 1: The beginning of the next hour, former NFL scout and
[0:40] Speaker 1: a new father, John middlecoff Rams twenty bears, seventeen Rams
[0:48] Speaker 1: play an extra quarder the Seahawks, and that deep young
[0:53] Speaker 1: roster will have an extra day of prep, so a
[0:55] Speaker 1: little bit of a Seahawk advantage going into the NFC Championship.
[1:00] Speaker 1: Between Caleb's throw to the back of the end zone
[1:03] Speaker 1: to send it in overtime and Stafford's throw to DeVante Adams,
[1:08] Speaker 1: I honestly believe John, those are the two best throws
[1:10] Speaker 1: I've seen in the playoffs. I don't have the memory
[1:14] Speaker 1: if to know all season I mean that lost in
[1:19] Speaker 1: all of this. I wrote this down during the game.
[1:23] Speaker 1: One penalty for the Rams. No turnovers. I didn't. I
[1:30] Speaker 1: don't have a dropped pass by the Rams. We've talked
[1:34] Speaker 1: about it this year. Seattle I think has more talent.
[1:38] Speaker 1: I think Eagles may have a better roster man. You've
[1:41] Speaker 1: got to beat the Rams. I mean, just though, just
[1:45] Speaker 1: don't make any mistakes. It's the worst whether they could
[1:48] Speaker 1: play in as an indoor team. They go on the road,
[1:52] Speaker 1: and I think in the end they just you know,
[1:55] Speaker 1: great first drive, great last drive, then they get the
[1:58] Speaker 1: huge pick. I mean, Seattle Rams kind of feels fitting,
[2:03] Speaker 1: doesn't it.
[2:05] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I thought the Bears they were pretty good.
[2:08] Speaker 2: I mean, their defense was really playing well the second
[2:11] Speaker 2: half of last game in the night. I mean physically,
[2:13] Speaker 2: they were hitting, they were covering pretty well. They felt
[2:17] Speaker 2: for the first time not this great Cinderella team and
[2:21] Speaker 2: a real like Super Bowl contender. I thought, if they
[2:23] Speaker 2: win this game, obviously you're in the Final four. But
[2:26] Speaker 2: just the way their defense had played for second half
[2:29] Speaker 2: into this game, obviously you know the weather benefits them.
[2:34] Speaker 2: I also think that for the Rams, what an organization
[2:38] Speaker 2: will win, there is no way to prep when you
[2:41] Speaker 2: practice in Los Angeles, there's just no Sean McVay was asking,
[2:45] Speaker 2: I don't control the weather here. I can't press a
[2:47] Speaker 2: button and have us practice outside and drop the you know,
[2:50] Speaker 2: seventy five degrees it was seven degrees on the field.
[2:54] Speaker 2: I mean that is but the way less Sneid, like
[2:57] Speaker 2: Les Sneed has his hands in that the landman the
[3:00] Speaker 2: type got Durant tonight made huge plays. He was physicality,
[3:05] Speaker 2: the mindset that Kieran Williams how hard they're Blake Quorum,
[3:08] Speaker 2: who comes from that culture in Harbaugh in Michigan. You know,
[3:11] Speaker 2: Stafford's been doing this forever, right, DeVante Adam's been doing
[3:14] Speaker 2: this forever. Puka guy they've had now for how many years? Three?
[3:17] Speaker 2: Who just belongs in moments like that, you know the bears.
[3:21] Speaker 2: You develop callouses, you practice and live in that weather,
[3:24] Speaker 2: you become a little more comfortable in it. Caleb. The
[3:27] Speaker 2: difference of Caleb and Stafford is I mean his legs
[3:30] Speaker 2: are I mean he could take off. It looks like
[3:31] Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson. We can get into Ben Johnson. I think
[3:34] Speaker 2: he doesn't utilize his legs enough. And you know, I
[3:38] Speaker 2: thought tonight that the toughness in the physicality of the Rams.
[3:41] Speaker 2: How about the hit They ended up turning it over
[3:43] Speaker 2: on downs and then they got the ball back because
[3:45] Speaker 2: McVeigh ended up hunting. I think it was like third
[3:48] Speaker 2: and two or third and goal and they tackled I
[3:51] Speaker 2: think it was DeAndre Swift and he got elevated. About
[3:53] Speaker 2: three guys hit him. Even my wife's like, holy mold.
[3:56] Speaker 2: I mean, it was just these The one thing you
[3:59] Speaker 2: would say now about the last fifteen years of the
[4:01] Speaker 2: good Rams teams Seattle, the good forty nine ers teams,
[4:05] Speaker 2: they build their teams to play environments like this because
[4:08] Speaker 2: of the value on toughness, physicality, serious guys. I didn't
[4:14] Speaker 2: know much about Landman, honestly, and I texted the one
[4:16] Speaker 2: I was like, was he that good in the pack?
[4:17] Speaker 2: I wasn't watching Colorado football when they were going one
[4:19] Speaker 2: and eleven. Yeah, most people weren't. And they're like, yeah,
[4:22] Speaker 2: he's one of the best players in the conference. Is
[4:23] Speaker 2: no one really paid attention? You watch him? How many
[4:25] Speaker 2: places does that guy make?
[4:27] Speaker 1: Yeah? I mean, you know, it's really interesting tonight. So
[4:30] Speaker 1: you know, Caleb's got the picks, and so you would
[4:33] Speaker 1: look at the night and go Oh, what a bad
[4:35] Speaker 1: night for Caleb. But beyond that one throw he made,
[4:39] Speaker 1: descend it at overtime, which you know, outside of Josh Allen,
[4:42] Speaker 1: I can't think of any current player that could make
[4:43] Speaker 1: that throw. I mean, guys have the league, the league
[4:46] Speaker 1: far elway farv Allen. I mean, but Brady and Manning
[4:50] Speaker 1: aren't making that throw, and they're.
[4:52] Speaker 2: All rogers when he was younger.
[4:53] Speaker 1: Maybe maybe, but it's really it's funny. I think Caleb
[4:58] Speaker 1: is so much better than three months ago. Like they
[5:02] Speaker 1: didn't run him a lot. He's much more comfortable in
[5:05] Speaker 1: the pocket. I think some of it is John. He
[5:07] Speaker 1: just doesn't he doesn't want to run. He likes delivering
[5:10] Speaker 1: in the pocket. I thought his receivers had multiple drops tonight.
[5:13] Speaker 1: I thought Dj Moore Collins pointed this out. Felt like
[5:17] Speaker 1: he he didn't know the route or didn't know it
[5:19] Speaker 1: was coming, or it was kind of a soft route.
[5:23] Speaker 1: On Kobe Durant's interception, it was you could tell Caleb
[5:27] Speaker 1: was bothered by it. I know everybody's gonna look at
[5:30] Speaker 1: this as a bad Caleb Knight, but I just I
[5:33] Speaker 1: think he's improved so much. I think you take I mean, listen,
[5:36] Speaker 1: here's the good news for the Bears, Dennis Allen had
[5:39] Speaker 1: a great last six quarters of defensive coordinator scheming. They
[5:44] Speaker 1: they do not have John, they don't have the Rams
[5:46] Speaker 1: defensive personnel now they they're healthier in the back end.
[5:49] Speaker 1: So Chicago's secondary does have some talent. Buyer has been
[5:52] Speaker 1: good for a long time. But that front seven Rams
[5:55] Speaker 1: is much better than the Bears, much more talented. And
[6:00] Speaker 1: I thought Stafford was uncomfortable for big portions of this game.
[6:04] Speaker 1: I thought they tackled well, I thought they were physical.
[6:08] Speaker 1: I just think the Rams played a cleaner football game. Penalties,
[6:13] Speaker 1: didn't have the turnovers, and you know, they had like
[6:16] Speaker 1: three really good drives, one in the first quarter, one
[6:19] Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter, and then one in overtime. I
[6:21] Speaker 1: mean that just basically they I mean, they were very
[6:25] Speaker 1: limited on what they could do.
[6:27] Speaker 2: I actually think in a weird way, they underutilized Caleb.
[6:30] Speaker 2: You know, his strength. He had a run earlier in
[6:33] Speaker 2: the game that when he hit the Jets, it went.
[6:37] Speaker 2: I don't know how many guys in the league are
[6:38] Speaker 2: faster than him. I mean it's probably like Lamar Jackson
[6:41] Speaker 2: and Kyler Murray and who even knows at this point
[6:43] Speaker 2: time both guys are banged up, and Ben Johnson I
[6:46] Speaker 2: think really struggles because he's such a I mean, he
[6:50] Speaker 2: runs more of an old school timing offense that he
[6:52] Speaker 2: doesn't have quarterback run plays in them. And when do
[6:54] Speaker 2: the Bears usually thrive when they let Caleb just kind
[6:57] Speaker 2: of cook and use his legs, talking always to run,
[7:01] Speaker 2: sometimes to run and throw, to scramble and throw. But
[7:05] Speaker 2: clearly Ben's offense, he's not calling those plays. You see
[7:08] Speaker 2: the short yardage plays to night which failed going right
[7:11] Speaker 2: up against land Man and verse. Why not run a
[7:14] Speaker 2: quarterback power for Caleb or at least get him on
[7:16] Speaker 2: the move. He's he's the best ad liber right now
[7:18] Speaker 2: in the league. He's what Lamar was a couple of
[7:20] Speaker 2: years ago. Get him and crazy things happen. But that's
[7:23] Speaker 2: not really how he wants to call plays. And I
[7:26] Speaker 2: think there's some give and take. And when do they
[7:27] Speaker 2: really thrive when they don't have a choice? Right, Yeah,
[7:30] Speaker 2: seventeen to ten, two minutes to goo Caleb save our season,
[7:33] Speaker 2: you know against the forty nine against whoever drive us
[7:36] Speaker 2: the field to win us the game. And then Ben's
[7:38] Speaker 2: play calls like Caleb can kind of throw him out
[7:40] Speaker 2: the window after a split second if he doesn't see
[7:43] Speaker 2: it and he takes off and he he either makes
[7:44] Speaker 2: plays run How many first downs a guy run for
[7:47] Speaker 2: this year, my guess would be like close to thirty,
[7:49] Speaker 2: you know, And that's not I think there's got to
[7:52] Speaker 2: be some give and take there. And I think Ben
[7:53] Speaker 2: would say for Caleb to be an elite player, the
[7:56] Speaker 2: accuracy does need to improve a little bit on some
[7:59] Speaker 2: of just the layup throws. Like Stafford when he has
[8:02] Speaker 2: time is hitting layups with his eyes closed right, because
[8:05] Speaker 2: the big plays, he's proven to do it immediately at
[8:08] Speaker 2: an all their thing.
[8:10] Speaker 1: Alf Roma Dunze has not been impactful in the second
[8:13] Speaker 1: half of the season. I mean, obviously Loveland's been huge.
[8:17] Speaker 1: Luther Burden tonight didn't do a ton I mean, listen,
[8:21] Speaker 1: so you look at the Bears average five point one
[8:24] Speaker 1: yards of play better than the Rams. The Bears nine
[8:27] Speaker 1: for nineteen on third down, better than the Rams. They
[8:31] Speaker 1: had seven minutes more time of possession. Again, they had
[8:35] Speaker 1: three picks, but the Bears only had three penalties. They
[8:38] Speaker 1: had more total plays. The Bears didn't allow a sack
[8:43] Speaker 1: while they had four. The Rams were forced to punt
[8:46] Speaker 1: eight times. Bears only three. I look at totally yards, Bears,
[8:50] Speaker 1: passing yards, Bears, rushing yards, Bears first down Bears, like
[8:55] Speaker 1: it's interesting. You look at Caleb and everybody's going to
[8:57] Speaker 1: point to the interceptions. But I thought, I mean, they
[9:00] Speaker 1: had some drops tonight, But I the Rams played a
[9:04] Speaker 1: cleaner game, and that they've done all the year. They've
[9:06] Speaker 1: been the least penalized team the last two years. They
[9:08] Speaker 1: just don't get penalized. It's not it's listen when people
[9:12] Speaker 1: get into this rig stuff. I always laugh because the
[9:14] Speaker 1: Devonte I was sitting there watching on the couch. I'm like,
[9:17] Speaker 1: you can't take that catch away from him. That's just
[9:19] Speaker 1: an insane play. But people are going to look and
[9:22] Speaker 1: say the Bears didn't play well. I thought Dennis Allen
[9:25] Speaker 1: had a great defensive game. I thought offensively, they made mistakes,
[9:29] Speaker 1: but they did a lot. They ran the ball at
[9:31] Speaker 1: various times. You know, it's time of possession that you know, again,
[9:37] Speaker 1: Chicago wins. I think people will probably dump on them.
[9:42] Speaker 1: They were two for three in the red zone like
[9:44] Speaker 1: the Rams were.
[9:46] Speaker 2: You know, I think the Bears they're two most impressive
[9:49] Speaker 2: games Colin. Obviously, they've had some great wins. I mean,
[9:52] Speaker 2: last week was incredible, but they've had these magical comebacks.
[9:55] Speaker 2: But in two of their losses against the Packers, the
[9:58] Speaker 2: first time in Lambeau and tonight, you came away going god,
[10:01] Speaker 2: I got a lot of respect for what's he doing.
[10:03] Speaker 2: I mean, they totally played winning football and one of
[10:05] Speaker 2: his interceptions came on fourth down, So it's like, what
[10:09] Speaker 2: are you supposed to do? I'd argue I would have
[10:11] Speaker 2: a rule if I owned a team, you are not
[10:13] Speaker 2: allowed to go for it in short yard a situation
[10:16] Speaker 2: when you can kick a field goal when the score
[10:18] Speaker 2: is zero zero, you know you have no clue how
[10:21] Speaker 2: these games are going to play out. I get you
[10:22] Speaker 2: come from Dan Campbell, but when you were with Dan,
[10:25] Speaker 2: the majority of your games were indoors. It's frigid conditions.
[10:29] Speaker 2: Even with this ram scoring offense. What it's seven degrees
[10:33] Speaker 2: and you got a quarterback who's thirty eight years old
[10:35] Speaker 2: with six kids, who's battling injuries. You think they're going
[10:38] Speaker 2: to score thirty points in that weather. I mean, they
[10:41] Speaker 2: looked like he was a lumberjack in Alaska to night.
[10:44] Speaker 2: When have you ever seen him? He's I mean that
[10:46] Speaker 2: they are the advantage you have with the weather, the
[10:49] Speaker 2: game is not gonna be some thirty five to thirty seven.
[10:52] Speaker 2: Never plays out that way in these games, you know sh.
[10:55] Speaker 1: I'll tell you who really deserves credit, Puka Nakua and
[10:57] Speaker 1: Kyron Williams. Those guys have strong hands. The Bears are
[11:02] Speaker 1: great at stripping the ball. The Rams didn't have a fumble.
[11:05] Speaker 1: Kyraen Williams had multiple guys clinging and trying to strip
[11:10] Speaker 1: the ball, never fumbled. I mean we watched New England
[11:12] Speaker 1: Houston today. I mean that thing was a fumble fest,
[11:15] Speaker 1: eight turnovers at one point. The Rams Pooka. They multiple
[11:19] Speaker 1: times Pooka had guys on him trying to strip it.
[11:22] Speaker 1: Same with Kyraen Williams. No fumbles. So I mean again,
[11:26] Speaker 1: this is a This Rams team is really well schooled.
[11:29] Speaker 1: I would imagine on an extra overtime Seahawks an extra day,
[11:35] Speaker 1: plus the Seahawks are at home, Seattle's probably gonna be
[11:38] Speaker 1: favored by what about a two points in that game.
[11:40] Speaker 2: Maybe Seattle number might be like three, three and a half.
[11:44] Speaker 2: I mean, I don't gotta tell you, I have looked
[11:47] Speaker 2: pretty shaky over the course of the second half.
[11:49] Speaker 1: Of the season, and Seahawks big special teams advantage. Although
[11:54] Speaker 1: when that kicker for the Rams was getting ready for
[11:57] Speaker 1: that kick, I was it was coin flip to me.
[11:59] Speaker 1: I'm like, I don't no, I don't have any.
[12:01] Speaker 2: I coulda saw a block touchdown the other way. I
[12:03] Speaker 2: thought that was exactly absolutely Even Collins were said when
[12:08] Speaker 2: they punted, you know, I thought McVeigh and I get it,
[12:11] Speaker 2: you're you're in a tough spots, easy to judge from
[12:13] Speaker 2: the couch, but they're getting a time out because of
[12:16] Speaker 2: the two minute warning. It was third and eight and
[12:19] Speaker 2: he chose to run it. I thought you could have
[12:21] Speaker 2: passed it there. I mean, your two best, two of
[12:23] Speaker 2: the best players in the league are Puka Nakua and DeVante.
[12:26] Speaker 2: You got the MVP playing quarterback. You're a great play caller.
[12:30] Speaker 2: I thought he could have got aggressive there and he didn't,
[12:32] Speaker 2: and then he punts and Collins worth like they were
[12:34] Speaker 2: clearly rattled from last week because all ten guys, they
[12:36] Speaker 2: didn't even run anyone down there to cover. So you
[12:39] Speaker 2: start dictating the way you call some of your plays
[12:42] Speaker 2: on special teams based on you're scared that listen, I
[12:45] Speaker 2: think it's easy to bag on a special team's coach,
[12:47] Speaker 2: Typically those are your backups. Clearly they're not as deep
[12:50] Speaker 2: as some of these other teams. Their starters are good.
[12:53] Speaker 2: But yeah, man, I thought McVeigh was clearly pretty rattled
[12:58] Speaker 2: on that special team's moment. That's why I would played
[13:00] Speaker 2: to avoid the punt and go for the first. I
[13:02] Speaker 2: was a little Sean McVay loves the pass. I was
[13:04] Speaker 2: surprised that he ran it there, and I mean the
[13:06] Speaker 2: Bear's got the ball at the fifty yard line.
[13:10] Speaker 1: Yeah. Let's when I look at the Bears season, one
[13:18] Speaker 1: of the things that really jumps out to me is
[13:21] Speaker 1: how much everything improved. Even when they were winning, they
[13:25] Speaker 1: were beating bad teams barely. If you go look at
[13:28] Speaker 1: the last six weeks, I mean, John, they had you
[13:31] Speaker 1: know they were in this game. I mean, if you
[13:33] Speaker 1: didn't know the records, you didn't know anything, and just
[13:36] Speaker 1: watch this game, your takeaway would be Chicago's everybodit as
[13:39] Speaker 1: good as the Rams. But you know the Rams come
[13:41] Speaker 1: in as a four and a half point favorite, don't cover,
[13:44] Speaker 1: but win, and you know your takeaway is the Rams
[13:47] Speaker 1: were more efficient. They're a cleaner team with an older quarterback,
[13:51] Speaker 1: made fewer mistakes. They just don't fumble it out three interceptions,
[13:53] Speaker 1: I don't get penalized. They again, I don't remember a
[13:56] Speaker 1: drop pass they may have. I don't remember a drop
[13:58] Speaker 1: pass Bears had three or four or five. But and
[14:02] Speaker 1: for the record, that's why the Rams beat the Seahawks
[14:05] Speaker 1: in one of their meetings. They played a cleaner game
[14:07] Speaker 1: than Seattle. So I think one of the big developments
[14:10] Speaker 1: over the course of the weekend no bow Nicks, you
[14:13] Speaker 1: know that's you start looking at Seattle right now and
[14:15] Speaker 1: it's like Seattles could, I mean, I could I make
[14:19] Speaker 1: this argument this is the last team with a chance
[14:22] Speaker 1: to beat Seattle. Drake may neutral site that Seahawks defense
[14:27] Speaker 1: if he got past him, because I think New England,
[14:30] Speaker 1: you know, is gonna be favored over Denver. La is
[14:34] Speaker 1: LA special teams worrying me.
[14:36] Speaker 2: But again, I think you're looking at the winner of
[14:39] Speaker 2: the NFC championship game is a favorite of the Super Bowl.
[14:42] Speaker 1: Absolutely, and they should be absolutely should be.
[14:48] Speaker 2: Man their game their games for theater. This year, I
[14:54] Speaker 2: was on my my podcast text Chain, I said, I
[14:57] Speaker 2: think I've watched more Bears football this year than I
[14:59] Speaker 2: have in the last fifteen years total. I mean, I
[15:02] Speaker 2: feel of the how many games they play seventeen and
[15:05] Speaker 2: then a couple of playoff games, So you're talking nineteen games.
[15:08] Speaker 2: I feel like I watched sixteen plus start to finish. John,
[15:11] Speaker 2: Their games have been riveting. I mean the last stretch
[15:15] Speaker 2: of the season. That's his entertaining, which is cool, Like
[15:18] Speaker 2: as a lover of this sport, someone that does this
[15:21] Speaker 2: for a living, like see a big city get revitalized,
[15:24] Speaker 2: see this brand matter. I was someone that questioned Caleb.
[15:28] Speaker 2: Obviously his physical attributes never wore a question. Just how
[15:32] Speaker 2: he would mix his playmaking is just even people that
[15:37] Speaker 2: loved him the most would not imagine. I mean, he's
[15:39] Speaker 2: looking like Farvard lway down the stretch of these games
[15:43] Speaker 2: in the freezing cold, right. I Mean the guy played
[15:45] Speaker 2: in sc and Oklahoma, and I know he's played in
[15:48] Speaker 2: DC in high school. But this is a little different
[15:51] Speaker 2: animal here. Yeah.
[15:52] Speaker 1: I mean the good news for the Bears this draft,
[15:55] Speaker 1: you know, John, they don't need a single offensive player.
[15:57] Speaker 1: They have their tackles, the interior line, they have two backs,
[16:01] Speaker 1: they have two tight ends, they have three receivers. I
[16:04] Speaker 1: mean they could take every draft pick. You see this
[16:06] Speaker 1: from time to time and just go, hey, defensive end.
[16:09] Speaker 1: Let's get a younger safety, corner, edge rusher. I mean,
[16:12] Speaker 1: this is a big edge draft. They need an edge rusher.
[16:15] Speaker 1: So you can tell what Chicago's going to do in
[16:17] Speaker 1: this drafty he Ben Johnson came in, solidified the interior.
[16:21] Speaker 1: OH line goes out and get Luther Burden, Colston Lovelin,
[16:25] Speaker 1: like we're gonna have a powerhouse offense. I'm going to
[16:27] Speaker 1: get my side of the ball. The Bears next year
[16:30] Speaker 1: are going to draft five defensive players, a lot of them.
[16:33] Speaker 1: To me in the box, they're going nowhere. I mean,
[16:38] Speaker 1: and the other thing we've said, Caleb doesn't throw a
[16:41] Speaker 1: lot of picks. He had him tonight. Again, it should
[16:44] Speaker 1: be noted roma Dunze dropped the touchdown ball on that
[16:47] Speaker 1: Bears first drive. So I mean, they're they're you know
[16:50] Speaker 1: this this this was not a game and where I
[16:52] Speaker 1: didn't think the Bears receivers had as good a game
[16:55] Speaker 1: as you know, a DeVante a Puka. The tight ends
[16:59] Speaker 1: for the Rams are so good they use all of them.
[17:01] Speaker 1: They're really really good. But I mean, Gardner Johnson knocked
[17:05] Speaker 1: that ball away from Terrence Ferguson that forced the field goal.
[17:09] Speaker 1: That's another great play by the Bears defensive backs to night.
[17:12] Speaker 1: Great game.
[17:14] Speaker 2: I don't remember their dbs were really good tonight.
[17:16] Speaker 1: I mean excellent, healthy, too healthier.
[17:19] Speaker 2: Yeah, they were just making plays on the ball. They
[17:21] Speaker 2: were tackling well in the open field. I actually think
[17:23] Speaker 2: they could. Obviously, Lovelin and Burden were two of his
[17:27] Speaker 2: first two draft picks, so those guys are going nowhere.
[17:30] Speaker 2: I think you could pick between Roma Dunze, who was
[17:33] Speaker 2: just a top ten pick couple years ago. DJ Moore,
[17:36] Speaker 2: who kind of had a weird year but he's has
[17:38] Speaker 2: a long resume of being a really good player, and
[17:40] Speaker 2: Cole Comet and take one of those players and use
[17:45] Speaker 2: it to get either draft capital. Maybe use it and
[17:47] Speaker 2: your first round pick to trade up in the draft
[17:49] Speaker 2: because they kind of have you don't need them all
[17:52] Speaker 2: and they're definitely As this goes on, they're going to
[17:54] Speaker 2: feature Lovelin and Luther Burden Moore. So to me, it's
[17:57] Speaker 2: almost between DJ Moore and Rome, which one do you
[17:59] Speaker 2: want to keep? You know, Rome's technically cheaper, but Rome
[18:03] Speaker 2: might have more value to some teams and just had
[18:05] Speaker 2: them rated really high. Cole Comet is a really solid
[18:07] Speaker 2: tight end. You might just why would you not just
[18:10] Speaker 2: keep him around. He's a virtuaal player. I think you
[18:12] Speaker 2: could take one of those two wide receivers and utilize
[18:16] Speaker 2: that to help get defensive help, because they probably have
[18:19] Speaker 2: an abundance of riches. But they're not, like you said,
[18:22] Speaker 2: Puka DeVante is better than those guys. I mean, right,
[18:25] Speaker 2: DeVante's a Hall of Famer and Puka is on a
[18:27] Speaker 2: track to go there. I mean they're just a little
[18:29] Speaker 2: higher level version of kind of their group.
[18:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, and you know, let's say this, this is Ben
[18:35] Speaker 1: Johnson's first year and Caleb's second year, and Stafford's been
[18:38] Speaker 1: around forever, and Sean mcvaz a veteran. And to go
[18:41] Speaker 1: on the road in the opposite of the weather you're
[18:45] Speaker 1: comfortable in and play that clean a football game, that's
[18:49] Speaker 1: really impressive. I mean it really is. To you know,
[18:53] Speaker 1: no drops, no penalties, not turning the ball over. I
[18:57] Speaker 1: know I've said that multiple times. That's really hard to do.
[19:01] Speaker 1: Go back and look at the box score on the
[19:04] Speaker 1: Texans Patriots, and those are again well coached teams. It
[19:07] Speaker 1: was a mess. You can't feel your hands. At halftime,
[19:10] Speaker 1: I stepped outside. I just wanted to see how cold
[19:12] Speaker 1: it wasn't halftime because I hadn't been outside for several hours.
[19:15] Speaker 1: I just went outside for two minutes and I'm like,
[19:18] Speaker 1: oh my god, it was windy. I'm like, this is
[19:20] Speaker 1: brutal these I mean it's it's we watched the classic,

[20:48] Speaker 1: one eighty and eight admit it. In Indiana, if you
[20:50] Speaker 1: are somebody you know as a problem wants help, call
[20:52] Speaker 1: one eight hundred and nine with it. Gambling problem called
[20:54] Speaker 1: one eight hundred Gambler Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia. Okay,
[21:04] Speaker 1: we've talked about Bears and Rams. Let's get to New England.
[21:08] Speaker 1: Twenty eight Houston sixteen, New England forcing five turnovers in
[21:13] Speaker 1: the win. You know, I picked New England to be
[21:19] Speaker 1: my double yr win total team, and as a wildcard team,
[21:22] Speaker 1: I picked Seattle to be my surprise playoff team. So
[21:27] Speaker 1: I thought, I thought Seattle had a chance to be special,
[21:30] Speaker 1: not maybe this good, but New England. I did pick
[21:31] Speaker 1: as a playoff team, a double your win total. And
[21:34] Speaker 1: my takeaway was I don't think people understand when you
[21:38] Speaker 1: go from a coach who's really not a coach to
[21:40] Speaker 1: Mike Frabel and Josh McDaniel. My take is that's three wins. Well,
[21:44] Speaker 1: they also had a great draft. They also are very
[21:47] Speaker 1: good at player development. I mean, if you look at
[21:50] Speaker 1: a play like a Keisham Boudet, who just has become
[21:53] Speaker 1: a better player under this staff. So you get a
[21:55] Speaker 1: really great draft the development of like Budet and Drake May,
[22:01] Speaker 1: and you spent two hundred and fifty MILI plus, plus
[22:03] Speaker 1: you have the best coordinator in the league. Josh McDaniels
[22:06] Speaker 1: and a head coach. You know, I picked him to
[22:08] Speaker 1: win ten games, and I take away everybody was like, well,
[22:11] Speaker 1: I looked at their roster today. It reminds me of
[22:14] Speaker 1: the old Belichick rosters, except the quarterbacks mobile. You just
[22:18] Speaker 1: have the same owner, Vrabels, a more current, more player
[22:22] Speaker 1: friendly version of Belichick high IQ, same coordinator and may
[22:26] Speaker 1: as Tom but more move He moves more. He had
[22:29] Speaker 1: twenty seven first downs running this year. But when I
[22:32] Speaker 1: look at their team, there's no real hole. I don't
[22:36] Speaker 1: know where New England's great. I think their receivers are undervalued.
[22:39] Speaker 1: I think they're a little better at receiver than people think.
[22:41] Speaker 1: They have two capable running backs. Hunter Henry's good, solid.
[22:44] Speaker 1: But my take on New England is in Seattle as
[22:48] Speaker 1: a little bit of this John. There's no hole where
[22:52] Speaker 1: do you now? Will Anderson eats Will Campbell for lunch? Okay,
[22:56] Speaker 1: he's a rookie left tackle. I'm not sure he's one
[22:58] Speaker 1: hundred percent. That was a mismaan. Will Anderson is getting
[23:01] Speaker 1: to a point now. Maybe he's not Miles Garrett, but
[23:03] Speaker 1: he is. He's the second best edge rusher in the
[23:06] Speaker 1: last seven eight years. I mean, it's like he looks
[23:09] Speaker 1: pretty good. He's just a blockable, long instinctive. But I
[23:15] Speaker 1: just think New England's talent is better than people understand.
[23:19] Speaker 1: They spend a lot of money in free agency, not
[23:21] Speaker 1: a lot of flashy stuff. Gonzalez is an elite corner.
[23:25] Speaker 1: They get really solid pressure ball hawking corners. I think
[23:29] Speaker 1: the Patriots talents better than people think.
[23:32] Speaker 2: Remember I think Belichick's last year defensively, they weren't terrible.
[23:36] Speaker 2: They were actually pretty good. And remember Belichick took some
[23:38] Speaker 2: shots at Gerard Mayo when he was in the media,
[23:40] Speaker 2: going like our defense was not their offense was horrendous.
[23:44] Speaker 2: The Patricia, the Jacoby mac Jones situation, Zappi. Defensively, they've
[23:50] Speaker 2: had pieces, even when Belichick handed the thing to Girard
[23:53] Speaker 2: and now to Vrabel. One note I wrote down is
[23:56] Speaker 2: there's a grit and toughness that reminded me of the
[24:00] Speaker 2: Atriot teams of the twenty year Dynasty, just the way
[24:02] Speaker 2: it looked unfazed by anything that happened. I mean, they
[24:06] Speaker 2: fumble unfaced, a crazy play by Willi Anderson, an offensive
[24:11] Speaker 2: lineman getting smoked unfaced, a touchdown that they score a
[24:14] Speaker 2: big unfaced. It's a very kind of old school mentality
[24:19] Speaker 2: they have, and to me, for ay Bole has clearly instilled.
[24:23] Speaker 2: I mean I was texting with someone that played for
[24:26] Speaker 2: Belichick with Brady in the two thousands, and he said,
[24:30] Speaker 2: it is so hard in those games to feel your hands,
[24:34] Speaker 2: how cold it is. And I think that directly impacts CJ. Shroud.
[24:37] Speaker 2: I know he played at Ohio State, but they don't
[24:40] Speaker 2: play in December and January. In college.
[24:42] Speaker 1: You could tell John. You could tell both quarterbacks with
[24:44] Speaker 1: the fumble issues they couldn't feel their hands.
[24:47] Speaker 2: Say with the running backs, it was I mean there
[24:49] Speaker 2: was at one point early in the third quarter there
[24:51] Speaker 2: were eight turnovers. I text a couple people, is this
[24:53] Speaker 2: a good game or a bad game? Because I'm entertained,
[24:55] Speaker 2: But I don't know. But I think there's an element
[24:58] Speaker 2: of the cold and just how difficult is to play. Honestly,
[25:02] Speaker 2: I'm watching this game like incredible. How good Tom was
[25:05] Speaker 2: in these elements for all those years. I mean, the accuracy,
[25:08] Speaker 2: the control of the ball, It's their whole team. I mean,
[25:11] Speaker 2: Belichick had that thing master to dominate in those environments. Well,
[25:15] Speaker 2: Rabel's inn Ohio guy played for a decade there kind
[25:18] Speaker 2: of likes vrable to me, feels much more cold sleep
[25:22] Speaker 2: that he does Nashville on Broadway, you know, So, I mean,
[25:26] Speaker 2: Josh McDaniels, they're very, very lucky. You know, a lot
[25:30] Speaker 2: of teams. Look look at Robert Solis, probably gonna get
[25:32] Speaker 2: a job. Kyle Shanahan would give him a ten year,
[25:34] Speaker 2: fifty million dollars contract right now to be as defensive coordinator.
[25:37] Speaker 2: Josh Stamers is not going to get a head coaching
[25:39] Speaker 2: job because of how bad his second tier. So there's
[25:42] Speaker 2: going to have this offensive coordinator who's elite at his job.
[25:45] Speaker 2: Who I mentioned this, I need to do the study.
[25:47] Speaker 2: I mean, it's really just a math equation. How many
[25:49] Speaker 2: games is Josh McDaniels coach as an offensive coordinator as
[25:52] Speaker 2: the in playoff games? Fifty? I mean, think how many
[25:55] Speaker 2: big games he's game planned for, practiced for, adjusted for
[25:59] Speaker 2: in the middle of the game. He's been in that
[26:00] Speaker 2: exact role for decades. And I mean he was the
[26:04] Speaker 2: offensive coordinator when Mac Jones made the playoffs. Like this
[26:06] Speaker 2: guy is that he has to be one of the
[26:09] Speaker 2: more senior or in terms of experience, corodinator in the
[26:13] Speaker 2: history of the NFL.
[26:14] Speaker 1: And he hasn't had to switch. He got middle aged Tom,
[26:17] Speaker 1: old Tom young, Mac Jones, young, Drake May, all kind
[26:21] Speaker 1: of the same prototype. You know, obviously Drake's the best
[26:24] Speaker 1: athlete in terms of mobility, but all pocket guys, all
[26:28] Speaker 1: pocket guys who just like who don't like stuff at
[26:30] Speaker 1: their feet, who like a little protection, who think pretty
[26:33] Speaker 1: quick get rid of the ball accurately. Brady mack So
[26:37] Speaker 1: it's as he has an offense, he has an ecosystem
[26:40] Speaker 1: the way he does it, and they've all kind of
[26:41] Speaker 1: I mean, he doesn't have to change rapidly. Yeah, I
[26:45] Speaker 1: mean if you're not giving him hyper athletic guy, because
[26:47] Speaker 1: Drake May runs for first down, but you can see
[26:49] Speaker 1: he wants to sit in the pocket.
[26:51] Speaker 2: And you know the.
[26:55] Speaker 1: Other thing that jumped out to me in this game,
[26:58] Speaker 1: New England beating Houston is Will Anderson's up for an extension.
[27:01] Speaker 1: He's getting it. You pay him whatever you have to
[27:04] Speaker 1: pay him. He is right now next to Miles Garrett,
[27:06] Speaker 1: Max Crosby's up there. C J. Stroud is going to
[27:10] Speaker 1: be very interesting because we've seen over the last couple
[27:13] Speaker 1: of weeks, boy, he has regressed. Now is it coaching?
[27:16] Speaker 1: You and I both feel strongly about this when it
[27:19] Speaker 1: comes to quarterbacks, and CJ is still kind of in
[27:21] Speaker 1: that Herbert Younger. Quarterback coaching matters a lot like and
[27:25] Speaker 1: by the way, it mattered for I mean Aaron Rodgers
[27:29] Speaker 1: much better this year with Arthur Smith than he was
[27:31] Speaker 1: with the Mess in New York. So c J. Stroud,
[27:36] Speaker 1: he'll get an extension, right, I mean it's it's.
[27:39] Speaker 2: I could not this offseason give him an extension.
[27:41] Speaker 1: Okay, so you wait to the other season. Okay.
[27:43] Speaker 2: To me, Will Anderson, you treat him like Micah Parsons.
[27:46] Speaker 2: You know, Aiden Hutchinson. What do you want, big guy,
[27:49] Speaker 2: here's the number. It's huge. You're going to be c J. Stroud,
[27:53] Speaker 2: I mean part of winning in that conference. I know
[27:57] Speaker 2: he played his year at Ohio State, but he's from
[28:00] Speaker 2: southern California and now he plays in a dome and
[28:03] Speaker 2: that feel today and again texting this guy that had
[28:05] Speaker 2: played there is like, he's like, you can't feel your hands.
[28:08] Speaker 2: So he's a touch passer. You know, a lot of
[28:11] Speaker 2: people compt him coming out of college. To Jared Goff, yes,
[28:14] Speaker 2: he was struggled in cold weather majority of his career.
[28:17] Speaker 2: He's clearly gotten a little bit better as he's gotten older,
[28:19] Speaker 2: maybe just a little more comfortable now he plays in
[28:21] Speaker 2: the NFC North, playing in more cold weather places. Like
[28:25] Speaker 2: he's a touch passer. Even on the touchdown he threw
[28:27] Speaker 2: to Kirk, Kirk had to make a great play and
[28:30] Speaker 2: box the guy out. His touch is a it doesn't
[28:32] Speaker 2: really work. And then you know these last couple of
[28:35] Speaker 2: weeks in the cold weather struggled touching the You gotta
[28:39] Speaker 2: play cold weather teams in the AFC. It's unavoidable unless
[28:42] Speaker 2: you're the number one seed every year. And to me,
[28:45] Speaker 2: they're clearly there's a little I mean, they didn't even
[28:46] Speaker 2: win their own division this year, so they're a well
[28:49] Speaker 2: run team. I think Casario's a stud. Mass They have
[28:53] Speaker 2: the Commander's second round pick, so they have their own
[28:56] Speaker 2: first round pick, and they got two two's offensive line off, Yes,
[29:00] Speaker 2: offensive line. So but we've seen you just talked about
[29:04] Speaker 2: quarterback thing. We have seen some bad quarterback contracts that
[29:08] Speaker 2: you didn't need to pay Cathera. Murray, you didn't need
[29:09] Speaker 2: to pay to it. Just take another year. CJ. Hey,
[29:12] Speaker 2: you're the number two overall pick. You're making millions of dollars.
[29:15] Speaker 2: It's not you're not Rock Purty payscale here, but you
[29:19] Speaker 2: just had I mean, how many turnofs this guy hap
[29:20] Speaker 2: in the last two weeks twenty I mean it was today.
[29:22] Speaker 2: It was outrageous, and I just you can't pay because
[29:26] Speaker 2: the going rate the minimum, like Sam Dartle's the minimum,
[29:30] Speaker 2: and that starts at one hundred and guys like CJ.
[29:31] Speaker 2: Stroud hang up on that. So they started like one
[29:33] Speaker 2: p fifty one sixty. You can't. I think he's playing
[29:38] Speaker 2: out next year. And that doesn't mean I like him.
[29:40] Speaker 2: I'm a fansy, high character guy, works hard, loves football,
[29:45] Speaker 2: but he's a touch passer that if I got to
[29:47] Speaker 2: go on the road Kansas City, Denver, New England, you
[29:50] Speaker 2: know Baltimore ain't gonna be down long, so it's I
[29:54] Speaker 2: gotta have a Kansas City. I mean, they'll they'll be back.
[29:57] Speaker 2: You gotta play well November December outside in the cold
[30:00] Speaker 2: weather and today because I talked to someone last week
[30:03] Speaker 2: that said his bad plays were atrocious, but he made
[30:06] Speaker 2: some good plays in Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh's just not that good
[30:08] Speaker 2: of a team, right, They're just they're not. New England
[30:11] Speaker 2: was a different level, and it felt he would I mean,
[30:14] Speaker 2: how often do you see former players. They go to
[30:17] Speaker 2: Jason Kelcey's like, I think you got a bench him
[30:19] Speaker 2: at half?
[30:19] Speaker 1: Yeah?
[30:19] Speaker 2: Pretty rare you and I I have no problem saying that,
[30:22] Speaker 2: but it's pretty rare for a guy like Kelsey. And
[30:24] Speaker 2: they weren't wrong. And Demico former player, probably thought like, Hey,
[30:28] Speaker 2: he's gonna be my starting quarterback next year. I can't
[30:30] Speaker 2: create a controversy going the offseason, which I don't disagree.
[30:33] Speaker 2: I understand where he's coming from, but you could have
[30:36] Speaker 2: justified benching him because this is in the NBA. Can't
[30:38] Speaker 2: demand a trade and get trade. That's not the way
[30:40] Speaker 2: it works. So I'm sure they had a conversation right
[30:43] Speaker 2: him and the OC like Davis Mills ready because this
[30:47] Speaker 2: is not going to work. And if you're thinking about
[30:49] Speaker 2: benching a guy at half, you can't then give him
[30:51] Speaker 2: one hundred and fifty million dollars. I mean, Colin, you
[30:53] Speaker 2: would do it potentially like a month. I mean, this
[30:55] Speaker 2: is the lot of guys get extension late February, early March.
[30:58] Speaker 2: So that's a noe for me. And it's not because
[31:00] Speaker 2: I don't like him, but he sent a five year
[31:03] Speaker 2: contract right pick up a fifth year option and then
[31:05] Speaker 2: go from there.
[31:06] Speaker 1: All right, let's go to Denver and overtime thirty three
[31:09] Speaker 1: to thirty over Buffalo. You know what, John, Like everybody
[31:13] Speaker 1: in America, I have watched every replay, and I will
[31:18] Speaker 1: say I think in most instances, when fans you know
[31:23] Speaker 1: it's rigged. If you're going to rig this thing, you'd
[31:25] Speaker 1: rig it for Josh Allen and the Bills, Bo Nixon,
[31:28] Speaker 1: the Super Bowls not moving a number. But I will
[31:31] Speaker 1: say I talked to a GM today and I looked
[31:35] Speaker 1: at several Let me put it this way, slow motion
[31:39] Speaker 1: usually creates clarity. I would argue this is one of
[31:43] Speaker 1: the rare instances slow motion created confusion because slow motion
[31:48] Speaker 1: makes it look like it's more of a catch by
[31:51] Speaker 1: Brandon Cooks than it is that in fast motion. When
[31:54] Speaker 1: I watched it about thirty times after talking to a GM,
[31:58] Speaker 1: the GM who is no, by the way, fan of Denver,
[32:00] Speaker 1: and I'll just leave it at that. Said, in the end,
[32:03] Speaker 1: if you look at it at real speed, the ball's
[32:06] Speaker 1: bouncing when he hits the ground, and that's not an
[32:08] Speaker 1: official cash though. Then it's whoever wins the wrestling match,
[32:11] Speaker 1: and Denver won the wrestling match. So I thought slow
[32:14] Speaker 1: mo is I'm watching it in slow mo. It actually,
[32:17] Speaker 1: in hindsight did it a disk service because it makes
[32:19] Speaker 1: it look like cochit is more in possession. That was
[32:22] Speaker 1: my take. Anyway, they got it right, but I've never
[32:25] Speaker 1: seen anything like that, so I didn't know for about
[32:28] Speaker 1: a day how to compute it.
[32:30] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I think the catch has become such
[32:32] Speaker 2: a convoluted situation in the NFL, Like why do we
[32:34] Speaker 2: have to make this so confusing? And by the letter
[32:37] Speaker 2: of the law, they got it right. I think you
[32:39] Speaker 2: could argue was he officially touched and then he ran
[32:42] Speaker 2: out of bounds and dropped the ball? Some people are
[32:44] Speaker 2: saying it should have been a Safety Bills win, But yeah,
[32:47] Speaker 2: I'm with you. I mean, I just think that we've
[32:50] Speaker 2: got to this point with instant replay, which does benefit us,
[32:54] Speaker 2: right because we can get things right. But also, like
[32:56] Speaker 2: I do feel for Sean McDermott. If you watched his
[32:59] Speaker 2: long time of you know, he went on this, I
[33:02] Speaker 2: wouldn't even call it a rant because he was very
[33:04] Speaker 2: under control and he said, listen, if I take a
[33:06] Speaker 2: step back objectively, can we just try to get it right?
[33:09] Speaker 2: And it felt very rushed. Now I think you know,
[33:13] Speaker 2: being in that spot in the first place, all the
[33:15] Speaker 2: turnovers right, obviously, the way the half ended for Buffalo,
[33:21] Speaker 2: there's a lot to even get to that point that
[33:24] Speaker 2: was avoidable. And I also think it's a reflection of
[33:27] Speaker 2: when the season's on the line. He's throwing a jump
[33:30] Speaker 2: ball to a very old I mean for NFL standards,
[33:34] Speaker 2: an older player who is not a jump ball player.
[33:38] Speaker 2: I mean, he's made some such place for him and
[33:39] Speaker 2: he honestly he has a couple. He made a great
[33:41] Speaker 2: catch to win out of bounds. But kind of a
[33:43] Speaker 2: reflection of their personnel, isn't that you and I talk
[33:45] Speaker 2: about a lot.
[33:46] Speaker 1: Yeah, Brandon Cooks has always been like a number two
[33:49] Speaker 1: or three. He's a speed guy. You run him up,
[33:51] Speaker 1: you run him deep. Yeah. I mean this has been
[33:53] Speaker 1: my knock is that they have three elite players all
[33:56] Speaker 1: on offense. You know, and by the way, Josh Allen's
[33:59] Speaker 1: best team James cook led running backs and fumbles, that's
[34:02] Speaker 1: his best teammate. They have a slot receiver, a good
[34:05] Speaker 1: left tackle Josh Allen, and a fumble prone running back
[34:08] Speaker 1: who's got jets. That's not great, you know. So my
[34:12] Speaker 1: takeaway is it's really not a good enough roster, so
[34:16] Speaker 1: you are left to I mean, they had three active guys.
[34:18] Speaker 1: You're left to throwing up a jump ball to a
[34:20] Speaker 1: speed guy, not a big receiver. Brandon Cooks is a smaller,
[34:24] Speaker 1: smaller speed guy without a huge catching radius. So you know,
[34:30] Speaker 1: I mean my question if you're gonna run McDermott out
[34:32] Speaker 1: of the building. And I think he's a BB plus coach.
[34:34] Speaker 1: I feel like this' ohas something last year they couldn't
[34:37] Speaker 1: get the tush push right. This year it's multiple turnovers.
[34:40] Speaker 1: The year before, you know, three years ago or whatever
[34:42] Speaker 1: it was, it was the thirteen second loss. You know,
[34:45] Speaker 1: years and years and years ago, it was wide right.
[34:47] Speaker 1: It's always something for Buffalo. But I do feel like
[34:50] Speaker 1: there are certain teams. We watched the Indiana Hoosiers. While
[34:54] Speaker 1: they're tight, the Belichick dynasty really tight. I just feel
[34:59] Speaker 1: usually comes on the offensive side. John Buffalo is a
[35:02] Speaker 1: little loose. They've missed on a lot of picks. They
[35:05] Speaker 1: have too many turnovers. I thought Josh was very reckless.
[35:08] Speaker 1: Can't you coach some of that out of him? By
[35:10] Speaker 1: the way, another defensive coach, Demiko Ryans, who I think
[35:13] Speaker 1: fondly of C J. Stroud, way too loose. You know,
[35:18] Speaker 1: sometimes I look at these defensive coaches and they're so
[35:21] Speaker 1: good on the defensive side elevating and developing that the
[35:25] Speaker 1: offense just doesn't feel like it's buttoned up. And that's
[35:27] Speaker 1: Buffalo again.
[35:29] Speaker 2: I do think when it comes to Josh in the
[35:30] Speaker 2: reckless nature, I mean, that's probably the worst playoff game
[35:32] Speaker 2: he's ever had. I mean statistically right, you know, I
[35:35] Speaker 2: think there's a farveing quality. I don't think you coached
[35:38] Speaker 2: that out. I mean he had Mike Holmger and Andy Reid,
[35:40] Speaker 2: John Gruden, Steve Mariucci and you know, in the prime
[35:42] Speaker 2: of his career, and he drove them all nuts. Sean
[35:45] Speaker 2: McDermott on an individual play basis, like the end of half.
[35:49] Speaker 2: He's not the offensive coordinator, but that's how you come
[35:52] Speaker 2: on the headset. We're kneeling it, Tony Romo. You know,
[35:54] Speaker 2: the best point of the day was like you could
[35:56] Speaker 2: not it's not worth the risk there when you don't
[35:58] Speaker 2: have any timeouts. And then Josh, you know, carries the
[36:00] Speaker 2: ball like Shady McCoy and the ball hits the ground.
[36:03] Speaker 2: But like on the aggregate of his career, they've been
[36:07] Speaker 2: really successful right up until yesterday they were eight no
[36:10] Speaker 2: to non Mahomes Joe Burrow teams. So they had won
[36:13] Speaker 2: a lot of playoff games. Look at how many playoff
[36:15] Speaker 2: games he's won relative to like Harrball and Tomlin. I mean,
[36:18] Speaker 2: Harball has got a hundred million dollars. If Tomlin chose
[36:22] Speaker 2: to coach, he'd probably get a hundred million dollars right now.
[36:24] Speaker 2: And Sean McDermott, I think, would say, well, we're all
[36:27] Speaker 2: defensive CEO types. I actually think the GM, and you
[36:31] Speaker 2: look around the league, all these gms survived, Joe Shane,
[36:34] Speaker 2: the guy in Arizona, the guy in Cleveland. I think
[36:37] Speaker 2: the GM relative to having this court, Howie Roseman, you
[36:40] Speaker 2: would rather get thrown off the Walt Whitman than be
[36:44] Speaker 2: to not be aggressive when he had Josh Allen as
[36:45] Speaker 2: his quarterback, and I think if you look at him
[36:48] Speaker 2: a little Farviyan Ted Thompson or not Rogers. I mean,
[36:52] Speaker 2: remember it was like god, Ted be aggressive here. You
[36:55] Speaker 2: got this guy in the peak of it, and they
[36:57] Speaker 2: weren't smaller market. Now they have an owner, but he
[37:00] Speaker 2: doesn't feel that aggressive at least from sitting here three
[37:03] Speaker 2: thousand miles away, like some of these owners I think
[37:05] Speaker 2: the GM has been dramatically worse than Sean McDermott. Now
[37:09] Speaker 2: we feel Sean McDermott more on game day than we
[37:12] Speaker 2: do the GM, just because on an visual play basis.
[37:15] Speaker 2: But I think the GM, relative to having this all
[37:18] Speaker 2: time great quarterback has been really bad. I mean Kethon Coleman.
[37:21] Speaker 2: He had a touchdown yesterday but was inactive most of
[37:23] Speaker 2: the season. So it's like, how many impact one thing?
[37:27] Speaker 2: How did the forty nine ers keep it going all
[37:29] Speaker 2: these years? They hit on a lot of like mid
[37:30] Speaker 2: round guys to become him, Like where are those guys
[37:32] Speaker 2: in Buffalo? You know Shakier's been on the team a
[37:34] Speaker 2: long time now It's like, you know, Cook was a
[37:37] Speaker 2: second round pick. Where are your big impact guys and
[37:40] Speaker 2: they where are your aggressive moves? Like why when how
[37:44] Speaker 2: he's making these trades when less Senie, when John Schneider,
[37:46] Speaker 2: why are you hand in hand with them? Like, hey,
[37:48] Speaker 2: I need to outbid this guy. When the forty nine
[37:51] Speaker 2: ers traded for McCaffrey, they had an add an extra
[37:53] Speaker 2: pick because the Rams are gonna get him and people
[37:55] Speaker 2: now the Rams and the Niners are crazy here, but
[37:57] Speaker 2: they lean aggressiveness when I look at Buffalo, Yeah, they're
[38:00] Speaker 2: just not that aggressive of a front office, and I
[38:03] Speaker 2: think it's bit them on the margins when they've had
[38:05] Speaker 2: now Finally, their quarterback played a bad game. But man,
[38:09] Speaker 2: so to me Sean McDermott, by the time people are
[38:11] Speaker 2: listening to this Monday, he might be done. But the
[38:14] Speaker 2: GM to me, cannot be one of those that survives
[38:16] Speaker 2: and the coach goes. That would be insanity to me.
[38:19] Speaker 1: Now and credit to Denver, they will not have bow Knicks.
[38:22] Speaker 1: Jarrett Stidham, because he's been in the program a couple
[38:24] Speaker 1: of years, should be a fairly competent backup, and they
[38:27] Speaker 1: also have between MEM's Courtland Sutton Harvey. They run the
[38:31] Speaker 1: ball pretty effectively at times. They did not against Buffalo,
[38:34] Speaker 1: credit to McDermott and the defense, they didn't run the
[38:36] Speaker 1: ball well. But Stidham should be a capable backup. He
[38:40] Speaker 1: won't run like bow Nix, He's not that athlete. But
[38:43] Speaker 1: in the end, could I not argue the Broncos have
[38:46] Speaker 1: the better coach, the better roster, the more efficient quarterback
[38:50] Speaker 1: for this game, and frankly huge edge on deep balls
[38:53] Speaker 1: at wide receiver. Lost in all of this is that
[38:56] Speaker 1: bow Knicks was two for two on two big deep
[39:00] Speaker 1: ball home run touchdown throws. He did a lot of
[39:03] Speaker 1: stuff under eight yards, a lot of stuff behind the
[39:06] Speaker 1: line of scrimmage. The two times he went big he
[39:09] Speaker 1: hit on both of them. So lost in all of
[39:11] Speaker 1: this was their corners got beat twice on big plays
[39:13] Speaker 1: and Bonix was more efficient.
[39:15] Speaker 2: Well, think about this one area that he got a
[39:18] Speaker 2: lot of credit this year. So did Caleb. Throughout the
[39:20] Speaker 2: regular season when it mattered most, they turned into a
[39:22] Speaker 2: high level player. Yeah, I mean both of them played
[39:25] Speaker 2: like top five guys on the last couple drives throughout
[39:28] Speaker 2: the season when their backs were against the wall. That
[39:30] Speaker 2: led them to both winning a bunch of games right
[39:32] Speaker 2: and becoming you know, high sets. His final drive was fantastic.
[39:36] Speaker 1: Fantastic, multiple big shots.
[39:38] Speaker 2: In zone coverage, a big run for a first down,
[39:40] Speaker 2: and obviously the game winning touched or game I guess
[39:43] Speaker 2: if they took the lead and then Buffalo tied it.
[39:44] Speaker 2: But it was just a gorgeous pass. And what was
[39:47] Speaker 2: an area that we hammered him on this season was like, ah,
[39:50] Speaker 2: the deep balls a little, it's not great. And I
[39:52] Speaker 2: think one thing, if you wanted to be critical of
[39:55] Speaker 2: Sean with both, Like I think Ben Johnson's a lot
[39:57] Speaker 2: like this too. Their favorite plays are timing pass routes.
[40:02] Speaker 2: That's what Ben Jonson thrived with Jared Goff and him
[40:05] Speaker 2: wi Sean Payton. These guys are playmaking athletes. You kind
[40:09] Speaker 2: of gotta let him and it's hard, you know, Steve
[40:11] Speaker 2: Kerr and I'm not comparing Steph Curry to either one
[40:14] Speaker 2: of these guys, but likes sometimes he's got to let
[40:16] Speaker 2: him be him and most coaches struggle with that. And
[40:19] Speaker 2: I think he got like, this game's probably not as
[40:21] Speaker 2: close if Sean just let him kind of scramble around
[40:24] Speaker 2: and make plays. But sometimes in the pocket that's not
[40:27] Speaker 2: where bo when he gets out of rhythm, it can
[40:28] Speaker 2: look a little off right, but as he just kind
[40:31] Speaker 2: of like, hey, make some plays, we need a touchdown,
[40:33] Speaker 2: run around, let it loose. That's when he's at his best.
[40:36] Speaker 2: Which do you ever remember a game ending and then
[40:39] Speaker 2: all of a sudden the guy broke his ankle and
[40:41] Speaker 2: no one saw it. I mean, it's it feels like
[40:43] Speaker 2: an unprecedented an injury when you factor in, no one knew,
[40:47] Speaker 2: even clearly the coach didn't know till he was told
[40:50] Speaker 2: I mean he walked. The NFL tweeted out a video
[40:53] Speaker 2: of him walking off the field, high five in people.
[40:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, I just think it's a bummer that
[40:58] Speaker 1: Jared's did a misplaying because I do think Denver, although
[41:01] Speaker 1: I don't know if they would win the Super Bowl,
[41:03] Speaker 1: I do think they're on a short list of teams
[41:05] Speaker 1: that can compete with it. I think they have an
[41:07] Speaker 1: excellent roster. And I'll give you I was thinking about
[41:10] Speaker 1: this today, John Denver and Seattle pivoted off Russell Wilson.
[41:16] Speaker 1: Denver really paid both number one seeds and the message
[41:22] Speaker 1: to the NFL if you make a mistake, move off
[41:26] Speaker 1: it quickly. Think about this. Gerrod Mayo, New England, big mistake,
[41:31] Speaker 1: moved off it. They're in the AFC Championship. Seattle, you
[41:37] Speaker 1: know we got Russell Wilson. We're moving off it didn't
[41:39] Speaker 1: take long. Geno Smith, Darnold Boom, number one seed, hit
[41:43] Speaker 1: on draft picks. Denver still paying cat room for this
[41:46] Speaker 1: year bow Nick's drafting playoffs, second year, number one seed
[41:50] Speaker 1: now AFC Championship. Bad weekend for Russell Wilson. Not to
[41:53] Speaker 1: bury him, but the point being between New England and Denver.
[41:57] Speaker 1: The message is, guys, don't get out of the rigidity
[42:02] Speaker 1: if you make a mistake with a coach or a quarterback.
[42:05] Speaker 1: The rebuilds are a year in the NFL you get
[42:08] Speaker 1: about a crappy year. I mean Denver in their rebuild
[42:11] Speaker 1: year with bow Knicks made the playoffs New England, and
[42:14] Speaker 1: I believe a rebuild year is going to make the
[42:17] Speaker 1: AFC Championship. So I kept thinking about it this weekend
[42:20] Speaker 1: when I looked at denveright. The overarching message is you
[42:24] Speaker 1: get the coach right, you get the quarterback mostly right.
[42:27] Speaker 1: Bo Nicks is hit and miss. You can not only
[42:30] Speaker 1: make the playoffs, you can end up a number one seed.
[42:33] Speaker 1: Our number one seeds are Bo Nicks and Sam Darnold.
[42:37] Speaker 1: You know, so we were getting into a weird space, John,
[42:40] Speaker 1: where it felt like mahomes Alan Lamar like you were
[42:43] Speaker 1: getting into a space where it felt like you had
[42:45] Speaker 1: to have a superstar quarterback to get in. The takeaway
[42:48] Speaker 1: now is no ge get a young talented quarterback. Caleb Williams.
[42:53] Speaker 1: I mean Stafford's now the only expensive guy left right
[42:56] Speaker 1: going into this podcast.
[42:58] Speaker 2: I also think that a lot of it, like the
[43:01] Speaker 2: Texans are a good example if CJ. Stroud would have
[43:04] Speaker 2: taken the approach like, hey, on this team, I'm just
[43:06] Speaker 2: gonna be Brad Johnson or Trend Dilfer, call me a
[43:09] Speaker 2: game manager, they could have won the Super Bowl. But
[43:12] Speaker 2: he tried to play like on this number two overall
[43:15] Speaker 2: quarterback watch me make plays? Is like, bro, do you
[43:18] Speaker 2: do not need to do that? So I think there's
[43:21] Speaker 2: this fine line of can you get a guy to
[43:23] Speaker 2: play within your system? Understand what he is? It's hard.
[43:26] Speaker 2: These quarterbacks now are rock stars. They make a ton
[43:28] Speaker 2: of money on and off the field, and some guys
[43:31] Speaker 2: just can't kind of find their lane, and then you're
[43:33] Speaker 2: very predicated on the play calling. Also, when you pay
[43:37] Speaker 2: a lot of money for these quarterbacks, it does limit.
[43:39] Speaker 2: I mean Buffalo in Kansas City just have less wiggle
[43:41] Speaker 2: room to make moves. I look at Denver, I want
[43:43] Speaker 2: Hufunga and I want Greenlow boom by it Bot mcglinchy
[43:46] Speaker 2: a year ago. You just start, you just can be
[43:49] Speaker 2: a little more aggressive once you pivot off and kind
[43:51] Speaker 2: of manipulate the cap. Also, it speaks to these owners,
[43:55] Speaker 2: what is Denver doing a lot? Like the Eagles did
[43:57] Speaker 2: they funny money contracts? They pay you more cash up front,
[44:00] Speaker 2: push it all down the line, and it's become not
[44:04] Speaker 2: only a smart guy, aggressive league, but is your owner
[44:06] Speaker 2: willing because they all have money, Like if the Browns
[44:09] Speaker 2: want to spend money, they can, they just choose not to.
[44:11] Speaker 2: In Cincinnati, they be cheap. It's your owner wants to
[44:14] Speaker 2: double down. I mean that's been the knock on Jerry.
[44:15] Speaker 2: It's like, yeah, just I'll pay you a couple guys,
[44:18] Speaker 2: but like gonna I'm gonna be a little cheap on
[44:19] Speaker 2: the margins. And I think Denver, clearly this is only
[44:23] Speaker 2: gonna solidify they They might get beat by twenty points
[44:26] Speaker 2: in the AFC Championship just because this guy doesn't take
[44:29] Speaker 2: any reps. Right, so we're in late January. I mean
[44:34] Speaker 2: he's probably gone four months without really taking assuming Bo
[44:36] Speaker 2: takes him all during practice he's with the scout team.
[44:39] Speaker 2: That's a lot to ask. So even worst case scenario,
[44:42] Speaker 2: but big picture, now, Sean's kind of you know, validated
[44:46] Speaker 2: when I tell you when I want something, to listen
[44:48] Speaker 2: to me. And these owners, I mean, who has more
[44:50] Speaker 2: money than Walmart? You know, Steve Balmer. I mean it's
[44:53] Speaker 2: a very short list. So it's like, hey, let's pay
[44:55] Speaker 2: this guy, give him a eighty million dollars signing bonus.
[44:57] Speaker 2: We'll do a ten year contract and we'll manipulate the book.
[45:00] Speaker 2: And that's why they were able to kind of maneuver
[45:03] Speaker 2: the Russell Wilson disaster. Think about Trey Lance. Niners pivoted
[45:07] Speaker 2: in a blink of an eye. Boom didn't even think twice.
[45:10] Speaker 2: You know, Carson Wentz years ago with the Eagles. It's like,
[45:13] Speaker 2: if you're willing to be like, hey, we missed, we
[45:15] Speaker 2: traded its first rounders, we paid a bunch of money.
[45:17] Speaker 2: Who cares. You're all making so much money you won't
[45:21] Speaker 2: even remember it.
[45:22] Speaker 1: In six months, Seattle our final game, recap hammer San
[45:35] Speaker 1: Francisco forty one to six. I thought it was going
[45:38] Speaker 1: to be really close. Somewhere in the third quarter, Seattle
[45:40] Speaker 1: pulls away. Instead, they take the opening kickoff, and from
[45:44] Speaker 1: that point the floodgates open. You know, I'll say this.
[45:46] Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan has coached one hundred and sixty three games
[45:49] Speaker 1: with the Niners. Only four times he's been held under
[45:52] Speaker 1: seven points. Two of those are against the Seahawks in January.
[45:56] Speaker 1: Listen one with George Kittle, one with that out listen.
[46:01] Speaker 1: I don't know if it's the legion of Boom, but
[46:04] Speaker 1: I will tell you these corners for Seattle, the linebackers
[46:08] Speaker 1: Ernest Jones, their pass rush is unbelievable. You can't run
[46:12] Speaker 1: on them. I mean, And what this really benefits Seattle
[46:15] Speaker 1: is that they don't have to take major risks. With
[46:17] Speaker 1: Sam Darnold, he plays a very conservative game. They run
[46:20] Speaker 1: the ball with Walker. I mean, I look at the
[46:22] Speaker 1: Seattle defense and they don't need to take a lot
[46:27] Speaker 1: of risks. It's I mean, you know, Donald's throwing eighteen
[46:31] Speaker 1: to twenty times a game with that run game, with
[46:34] Speaker 1: that defense. Also the difference between the Seahawks and the
[46:37] Speaker 1: Rams and Niners in Division. Seattle's got great special teams,
[46:40] Speaker 1: outstanding special teams. I don't see a hole in Seattle,
[46:43] Speaker 1: do you You know?
[46:45] Speaker 2: They remind me a lot of the twenty nineteen forty
[46:47] Speaker 2: nine Ers who were the number one seed and had
[46:50] Speaker 2: a ten point lead with five minutes to go against
[46:52] Speaker 2: Kancay Chiefs and the Super Bowl. And if you remember
[46:54] Speaker 2: in that NFC Championship game, I think Jimmy Garoppolo threw
[46:57] Speaker 2: eight pass attempts and they blew out Aaron because their
[47:01] Speaker 2: defense was unstoppable. And what did they have Kyle and
[47:05] Speaker 2: Sola back then? Well, what does this team have McDonald
[47:08] Speaker 2: and Kubiak, who I've been saying forever the Kubiaks are
[47:11] Speaker 2: basically just the cousins of the Shanahans, right. I mean
[47:13] Speaker 2: the offense was invented with the two of them. So
[47:17] Speaker 2: when I see a team that they won a game
[47:20] Speaker 2: yesterday forty one to six, and their quarterback completed twelve
[47:23] Speaker 2: fastes for one hundred and twenty yards, So this was
[47:27] Speaker 2: the Jimmy Garoppolo forty nine ers. As long as you
[47:30] Speaker 2: don't turn the ball over, they're gonna win the Super Bowl.
[47:32] Speaker 2: If their defense is gonna play like that, they're going
[47:34] Speaker 2: to win the Super Bowl. The only way they will
[47:36] Speaker 2: not win the Super Bowl is if he has a
[47:37] Speaker 2: game where he has a fumble in an interception, if
[47:40] Speaker 2: he just plays control. Who cares to look at CJ.
[47:43] Speaker 2: Stroud today. Punt is not a bad thing. They're not
[47:45] Speaker 2: going to move the ball. At most, they're going to
[47:47] Speaker 2: score a couple touchdowns. Who cares. We cannot fumble the ball,
[47:50] Speaker 2: We can not throw interceptions. If Sam Darnold, which let's
[47:54] Speaker 2: face he led the league in turnovers during the season,
[47:56] Speaker 2: so you were nervous. And then the oblique injury to
[47:59] Speaker 2: me scared me because because yeah, a lot of quarter
[48:01] Speaker 2: I remember specifically, I think Derek Carr had this and
[48:04] Speaker 2: he just couldn't throw right. So you just think, how's
[48:06] Speaker 2: this gonna work? And then you watch that first throw
[48:08] Speaker 2: of the game. It was kind of like a hit
[48:09] Speaker 2: the ground. You want, well, this might be something Shanna
[48:12] Speaker 2: Hand said after the game, He's like, well, I wants
[48:13] Speaker 2: the tort roll really hits it in, he ain't gonna
[48:15] Speaker 2: feel it. So and then as the game went on
[48:18] Speaker 2: he looked just completely normal and they didn't even need him.
[48:20] Speaker 2: But if your defense from a scheme standpoint, they're the
[48:23] Speaker 2: best scheme defense in the way I've been described by
[48:25] Speaker 2: Niner people. Typically Kyle he kills you because he's such
[48:30] Speaker 2: a good game planner of like he knows exactly what
[48:33] Speaker 2: you're gonna do, so he can put his guy in
[48:36] Speaker 2: a place that he knows you're not gonna be. The
[48:38] Speaker 2: problem for McDonald is he's basically a wizard. You think
[48:43] Speaker 2: he's gonna do something and then he does the complete
[48:44] Speaker 2: opposite when the ball snapped. No one really plays like that.
[48:47] Speaker 2: Belichick used to do this forever, right, Spagnola kind of
[48:51] Speaker 2: does this with his blitzes. It's a short list of
[48:53] Speaker 2: guys that can really manipulate the defense like offensive coaches
[48:57] Speaker 2: manipulate the offense. This guy's I mean, there's no way
[49:01] Speaker 2: around it. And his and then the personnel standpoint. We
[49:04] Speaker 2: talk about britt being with Buffalo, they have the opposite
[49:07] Speaker 2: with shut Schnyder. I mean he's he's going to the
[49:09] Speaker 2: Hall of Fame. I mean that's just that's the case.
[49:12] Speaker 2: So he's going right to the Hall of Fame as
[49:14] Speaker 2: a GM.
[49:14] Speaker 1: My people that I trust think Snyder's is the best
[49:17] Speaker 1: personnel guy in the league. Howie Roseman is more aggressive
[49:21] Speaker 1: and maybe the great manipulator of trades and draft picks.
[49:25] Speaker 1: John's the best personnel guy just just looking at overall personnel.
[49:29] Speaker 1: And by the way, in this division, Seattle said, Listen,
[49:32] Speaker 1: McVeigh and Shanahan are in this division, We're not going
[49:35] Speaker 1: to have the third best offensive coach. They didn't try
[49:37] Speaker 1: to top the Rams and the Niners, Like, Okay, we
[49:40] Speaker 1: got McVeigh, we got Shanahan. We're not beating that. We're
[49:44] Speaker 1: gonna go get the McVeigh of the defensive side. So
[49:46] Speaker 1: we're gonna build this thing on defense, because you and
[49:48] Speaker 1: I John know this in the history of football, even
[49:50] Speaker 1: now's football, in most of the time, if your offense
[49:54] Speaker 1: is competent and not turnover prone, a dominating defense. The
[49:58] Speaker 1: Seahawks humul Peyton Manning in a Super Bowl. The Seahawks
[50:02] Speaker 1: should have beaten Tom Brady in the Super Bowl, not
[50:04] Speaker 1: for Malcolm Butler. A great defense with a competent offense.
[50:09] Speaker 1: Usually Mahomes has been blown out twice in Super Bowls.
[50:12] Speaker 1: He can't get pass pro, he can't be protected. So
[50:16] Speaker 1: I just they're the opposite of the Steelers. They're the
[50:19] Speaker 1: opposite of the Steelers. Is that the Seahawks have built
[50:23] Speaker 1: a defense that is young and cheap. It's the twenty
[50:26] Speaker 1: third most expensive defense. You know, with the Steelers they
[50:29] Speaker 1: spent all this money four years in a row of
[50:31] Speaker 1: the most expensive defense. It's old, creaky, a lot of injuries,
[50:34] Speaker 1: and expensive. Seattle's the opposite they hit on their draft picks.
[50:37] Speaker 1: It's young, cheap, flexible, and allows them to, you know,
[50:42] Speaker 1: go out and get Rashid Sahed and you know who.
[50:45] Speaker 1: By the way, they already had solid special teams. Now
[50:48] Speaker 1: they're probably the best special teams left in the playoffs.
[50:52] Speaker 2: I think what he did a really good job of
[50:54] Speaker 2: and a lot of people complain, go, we're never bad
[50:56] Speaker 2: enough to bottom out. Well, Seattle never bought him down.
[51:00] Speaker 2: They kept the Russell Wilson trade in the one year
[51:02] Speaker 2: it netted them I think the fifth pick, and they
[51:04] Speaker 2: got Witherspoon, who was a high end player. But a
[51:06] Speaker 2: lot of their guys, the guards from North Dakota State's
[51:10] Speaker 2: able Byron Murphy, those were teams that went like nine
[51:14] Speaker 2: to eight or ten and seven. So he was picking
[51:16] Speaker 2: in the teens and he hit home runs. So a
[51:19] Speaker 2: lot of GMS you know him, I know him in personnel. Well, bitch,
[51:22] Speaker 2: like you know, it's hard to find a guy at sixteen.
[51:25] Speaker 2: I didn't see John Snyder complaining he just got impact
[51:27] Speaker 2: Pro Bowl guys with those couple of picks. Obviously, the
[51:30] Speaker 2: Sam Darnold thing, even he admitted we tried to pay Gino.
[51:34] Speaker 2: We kind of low balled them relative I mean, they
[51:37] Speaker 2: were offering him thirty five million dollars. He thought he
[51:39] Speaker 2: was with Fortis like, fine, we're not We're gonna have
[51:41] Speaker 2: a number see you later. We'll go to Sam for
[51:43] Speaker 2: basically a cheaper price. And it's not like Sam. You know,
[51:46] Speaker 2: he was better last year, right, thirty five touchdowns this
[51:49] Speaker 2: year a little up and down with the turnovers, but
[51:52] Speaker 2: he's much more seasoned. Like you saw him last night,
[51:55] Speaker 2: it felt like a guy under control. He's injured, he
[51:58] Speaker 2: understands the circumstance. Play under control, play like Jimmy Garoppolo
[52:02] Speaker 2: twenty nineteen, which back to CJ. Stroud, can be hard
[52:06] Speaker 2: for guys who were star guys drafted high. You just
[52:09] Speaker 2: view yourself and that's why when people make the transition.
[52:12] Speaker 2: Rich Gannons talked about this. You know, it used to
[52:15] Speaker 2: happen a lot, like even before I was born, Jim Plunkett,
[52:18] Speaker 2: Guys that have been really humbled and then kind of
[52:20] Speaker 2: know their role. I think it is very difficult for
[52:22] Speaker 2: these guys to be like, hey, JJ McCarthy, you were
[52:25] Speaker 2: a top ten pick, but we need you to play
[52:26] Speaker 2: a little different now. And the version they got out
[52:30] Speaker 2: of Sam Donald last night, that will win them the
[52:32] Speaker 2: Super Bowl if he can just if they can play
[52:35] Speaker 2: in games where they're not even throwing at twenty times
[52:37] Speaker 2: a game, they might blow out the next two teams
[52:40] Speaker 2: they play. Maybe not forty one to six. But when
[52:42] Speaker 2: it shocked you, if they won the next two games
[52:44] Speaker 2: by double digits, if Sam Donald is attempting less than
[52:47] Speaker 2: twenty balls, they can run the ball in their defense.
[52:49] Speaker 2: Houston could do that if they just had a normal offense.
[52:51] Speaker 2: When you have that level of defense, Houston's defense seattles
[52:55] Speaker 2: defense even Denver. I keep hearing their defense is not
[52:58] Speaker 2: as good as it was last year. It's not bad, no,
[53:01] Speaker 2: but it's not dominant by anything. I mean, they got
[53:03] Speaker 2: shredded on the ground. You can't do anything on Seattle.
[53:06] Speaker 1: Yeah, and by the way, the Niners overachieved all season.
[53:09] Speaker 1: They had no business beating Philly and Philly. Philly fell
[53:12] Speaker 1: apart offensively in coaching. So I mean, to me, Trent
[53:15] Speaker 1: Williams said it, after once you beat Philly and Philly
[53:17] Speaker 1: with this roster, you're going up to Seattle. You got
[53:20] Speaker 1: no George Kittle. I've always said this, if you speed
[53:22] Speaker 1: brock perty up, he becomes pretty normal. I mean, Christian
[53:25] Speaker 1: McCaffrey in two games against the Seahawks couldn't do anything.
[53:27] Speaker 1: So you know, McCaffrey's got Christians not helping. He's averaging
[53:31] Speaker 1: three yards of carry. There's no Kittle. I'm sorry that
[53:34] Speaker 1: the secondary for Seattle in the pass rush. This was
[53:36] Speaker 1: a roster mismatch, and I do think San Francisco hitting
[53:39] Speaker 1: a couple of young players, but I felt it was
[53:41] Speaker 1: a roster mismatch, all right. John Harbaugh to the New
[53:44] Speaker 1: York Giants, let's finish with this. Stefanski, by the way,
[53:47] Speaker 1: gets the Atlanta job. A lot of offensive skill people.
[53:49] Speaker 1: Not sure what the Steelers are doing. They're gonna get
[53:51] Speaker 1: the third choice because the Ravens they're coming in. They're
[53:55] Speaker 1: probably I think you would choose the Ravens over the Steelers,
[53:57] Speaker 1: So excuse me. The Steelers will get the fourth choice
[53:59] Speaker 1: at you know, and this is a rone. He's not
[54:02] Speaker 1: super aggressive in the free agent market, the trade deadline,
[54:05] Speaker 1: of the coaching market. They're not good at this. So
[54:08] Speaker 1: Giants get their guy Atlanta against their guy. Baltimore's probably
[54:12] Speaker 1: next top of the food chain with Steve Bushatti, Lamar Jackson.
[54:15] Speaker 1: Good roster. Steelers at best get fourth, Watch out Pittsburgh.
[54:19] Speaker 1: John Harbaugh to New York. So I text the GM today,
[54:23] Speaker 1: I said, Joe Shane, I mean John Harbaugh's making twenty
[54:28] Speaker 1: million a year. Joe Shane has no leverage, and that's
[54:31] Speaker 1: what he said. This is John is going to go
[54:33] Speaker 1: straight tomorrow. I have picked four years in a row.
[54:38] Speaker 1: My double year win total team, Giants went four and thirteen.
[54:42] Speaker 1: I actually think they're going to be a ten or
[54:44] Speaker 1: eleven win team next year. I think Washington's a bit
[54:46] Speaker 1: of a mess. Dallas, we don't know what they're doing
[54:49] Speaker 1: with the coaching position. I think they're bringing the you know,
[54:51] Speaker 1: they're bringing Brian Schottenheimer back. They still have some real
[54:54] Speaker 1: holes defensively. You know, you get to watch Jackson Dart
[54:58] Speaker 1: John Harbaugh and watch Jackson for a year and say,
[55:00] Speaker 1: let's see, I'm gonna I'm gonna start him and see
[55:02] Speaker 1: if I like him. Because it's good. They're gonna be
[55:04] Speaker 1: going into a great quarterback draft out of college. I
[55:07] Speaker 1: think it sets up really well. I think between Andrew Thomas,
[55:10] Speaker 1: if they get a right tackle like the Tampa Bay
[55:12] Speaker 1: Buccaneers did with Brady Go get a right tackle, there's
[55:15] Speaker 1: three good ones in the first round. I think offensively
[55:18] Speaker 1: they're going to be interesting. They've got Duel Carter, they
[55:21] Speaker 1: got Brian Burns, probably needs some secondary help. I strongly
[55:25] Speaker 1: believe that this is a they don't need a schematic guy. John.
[55:29] Speaker 1: They don't need a play caller. They need a culture changer.
[55:33] Speaker 1: There's no Shanahans on the market, right, that's rare. You
[55:35] Speaker 1: get the CEO and the play caller, play designer. Harbottom
[55:39] Speaker 1: is what they needed. Successful culture builder, good staff builder.
[55:45] Speaker 1: I like, I'll be honest, if they get the right
[55:47] Speaker 1: tackle and a corner and a tight end and the
[55:49] Speaker 1: draft John, I like their roster.
[55:52] Speaker 2: Yeah to me, and it's a great fit for him. Yeah.
[55:55] Speaker 2: When it when he got fired and then the next
[55:59] Speaker 2: day they fire Mike McDaniel and it was like they're
[56:02] Speaker 2: gonna go after him. I was like, John Harbott in Miami.
[56:05] Speaker 2: That feels like a weirdest fit. That feels like where
[56:08] Speaker 2: a guy goes to kind of retire in his shoes.
[56:11] Speaker 2: To me, he feels New York giants. You know. Since
[56:13] Speaker 2: nineteen ninety eight he got hired with Philadelphia. I think
[56:15] Speaker 2: that was the year before Andy Reid even got there. Yeah,
[56:18] Speaker 2: and Andy kept him and then so basically from ninety
[56:21] Speaker 2: eight till a couple of weeks ago, he's been in
[56:23] Speaker 2: Philadelphia and Baltimore. R Like he belongs in that area.
[56:26] Speaker 2: He's company, he feels like that area yes, yeah, I was.
[56:33] Speaker 2: I don't really remember the Walsh Niner era, but there
[56:37] Speaker 2: was one team that could handle him, and it was
[56:38] Speaker 2: Bill Parcells. And then the one team that could take
[56:41] Speaker 2: down Brady and Belichick it was Tom Coughlin. And I
[56:44] Speaker 2: would say that when Bill Parcells and Tom Coughlin. I
[56:47] Speaker 2: remember meeting Tom Coughlin one time at the combine. He's
[56:50] Speaker 2: not the biggest, most intimidating human. It's not like a
[56:52] Speaker 2: Vrabel or a Jim Harbaugh. But when you met him,
[56:55] Speaker 2: you felt like, this guy's the boss, you know, just
[56:57] Speaker 2: like stand up straight, and to me, that's what the
[57:00] Speaker 2: bringing to the table. So the Giants, now you could
[57:02] Speaker 2: argue this about New York. Think about the successful coaches,
[57:05] Speaker 2: even remove football pat Riley, right, Joe Tory, they've kind
[57:10] Speaker 2: of been like, yeah, this guy's the boss. And the
[57:13] Speaker 2: last decade since they got rid of Coughlin, which wasn't
[57:15] Speaker 2: the wrong move, it was time, right, they got a
[57:18] Speaker 2: bunch of guys that like, this guy's a number two,
[57:20] Speaker 2: this guy's at number three, this guy's no in this market.
[57:23] Speaker 2: To you can pull it off in some of these
[57:25] Speaker 2: smaller market spots, you have no chance. In New York.
[57:27] Speaker 2: You get eaten alive. The Jets make that mistake a
[57:30] Speaker 2: lot right, and John Harbaugh will come in. I mean,
[57:33] Speaker 2: look at they are very very lucky that this played
[57:38] Speaker 2: out the way it did because it gives them a
[57:40] Speaker 2: chance to change the franchise.
[57:41] Speaker 1: Also, John, when you do the first hire, you get
[57:43] Speaker 1: the best staff. So this is why I worry about Pittsburgh.
[57:46] Speaker 1: So Atlanta immediately goes and gets Stefanski because they want
[57:50] Speaker 1: to get the best. Stefanski wants to get that defensive
[57:52] Speaker 1: staff in. Because Stefanski's gonna get a good offensive staff.
[57:55] Speaker 1: He's a bright guy. He wants to get special teams
[57:57] Speaker 1: in defense taken care of. So I mean, to me,
[58:00] Speaker 1: I think Atlanta is very attractive in terms of offensive skill,
[58:04] Speaker 1: pretty good offensive line. I think their stability in Arthur Blank,
[58:06] Speaker 1: I think people respect Arthur Blank. I think Stefanski's really bright.
[58:09] Speaker 1: It's a weaker division. You're playing indoors, you know. To me,
[58:13] Speaker 1: I think Stefanski would fit there. But the minute the
[58:15] Speaker 1: Giants went horriball, I think Atlanta looks at that and goes,
[58:18] Speaker 1: all right, let's get our guy. That's where I worry
[58:20] Speaker 1: about Pittsburgh because they don't do this at least Atlanta
[58:24] Speaker 1: and the Giants have. They have a history of hiring
[58:26] Speaker 1: coaches and the process.
[58:29] Speaker 2: My only issue with the Giants thing is the Giants
[58:33] Speaker 2: had to do whatever it took to get this guy.
[58:34] Speaker 2: They gave one hundred million dollars. I mean, great time
[58:36] Speaker 2: to be a coach. I mean, how much money is
[58:38] Speaker 2: John Harbaugh gonna make over the course? By twenty and thirty,
[58:40] Speaker 2: he'll be worth like hundreds of millions of dollars. This
[58:42] Speaker 2: guy's These guys are crushing it. But I do think
[58:46] Speaker 2: you've got to be very careful. And Andy's like his mentor,
[58:49] Speaker 2: guy that he looks up to. I think that helped.
[58:51] Speaker 2: He talked to a bunch when Andy went to Kansas City.
[58:53] Speaker 2: He said, listen, I do not want to pick the players. Now,
[58:56] Speaker 2: I'm not saying John is saying that, but when you
[58:59] Speaker 2: put yourself away away from the GM, you have all
[59:02] Speaker 2: the juice to me the Giants. What they should do is, listen,
[59:05] Speaker 2: we are gonna put you at the top of the
[59:06] Speaker 2: food chain, but we want you, like your brother with Ortiz,
[59:10] Speaker 2: get someone you really respect so you can lean on him, like.
[59:14] Speaker 1: You know what.
[59:14] Speaker 2: Demico doesn't have to worry about picking players. Casario does
[59:18] Speaker 2: it all right, you know what, Mike McDonald doesn't have
[59:20] Speaker 2: to worry about picking players. John does it all focus
[59:23] Speaker 2: on coaching, focus on the culture. Obviously, you impact who
[59:26] Speaker 2: we draft and sign. But right now, John's kind of
[59:30] Speaker 2: it's kind of Gruden like. And Mark Davis said, I
[59:33] Speaker 2: want you to work with Reggie mackenzie for a year.
[59:34] Speaker 2: You know why because I think a lot of these owners,
[59:36] Speaker 2: they spend way more time with the GM. They end
[59:38] Speaker 2: up liking the guy. I'm sure they like Joe Shane
[59:40] Speaker 2: a lot. This is never gonna Joe Shane. I would
[59:43] Speaker 2: be stunt now. I said that about Sean Payton with
[59:45] Speaker 2: the guy he's still there. The GM that you know
[59:48] Speaker 2: kind of fall so it's it's never guaranteed. You know,
[59:50] Speaker 2: he's got a year to sell himself. And George pat
[59:53] Speaker 2: Peyton Patton, right, yeah, still Shawn's GM.
[59:55] Speaker 1: He's respected though, I mean, he's pretty good personnel guy.
[59:59] Speaker 2: Had turned down G interviews for like seven years before
[1:00:01] Speaker 2: he got the Denver job. He was kind of like
[1:00:04] Speaker 2: you know, Chris Ballard, Adam Peters. There are these rare
[1:00:06] Speaker 2: personnel guys that, like Cassario was like, that have a
[1:00:09] Speaker 2: run where they kind of picked their specific job. This
[1:00:13] Speaker 2: doesn't feel like that with Joe Shane, and it almost
[1:00:15] Speaker 2: feels inevitable that he's just gonna have a raven type
[1:00:18] Speaker 2: guy in that spot. Why not do it right now?
[1:00:20] Speaker 2: Why not just start fresh? So John, because sometimes coaches
[1:00:25] Speaker 2: they think a lot different than personnel guys.
[1:00:26] Speaker 1: Yeah, Corsonnelle.
[1:00:27] Speaker 2: Guys can be a little less emotional, can think bigger
[1:00:29] Speaker 2: picture stuff. They understand the marketplace of the draft a
[1:00:32] Speaker 2: little bit better. And I'd just be Now, the Giants
[1:00:36] Speaker 2: don't really have a crazy It's not like there's a
[1:00:38] Speaker 2: Khalil Mack for him to trade or you know, something
[1:00:40] Speaker 2: crazy for him. But in a year he could do
[1:00:42] Speaker 2: something that maybe he would regret in two years that
[1:00:44] Speaker 2: he didn't have to do that in Baltimore because he
[1:00:46] Speaker 2: had Ozzy and Ericacosta and by many consider the best
[1:00:50] Speaker 2: one of the best staffs in the league. Now he's
[1:00:53] Speaker 2: going he's you know Vrabel when he went to New England,
[1:00:56] Speaker 2: brought one of his guys to Tennessee to work with
[1:00:58] Speaker 2: Elliott Wolf. I have a lot of friends that think,
[1:01:00] Speaker 2: you watch John will bring uh, you know, a Baltimore
[1:01:05] Speaker 2: guy with him, But then that's what's the point. You know,
[1:01:08] Speaker 2: it's I'd be very careful about that. Totally pro The
[1:01:11] Speaker 2: higher think it's a no brainer, but that the coach
[1:01:14] Speaker 2: having too much jew Sometimes they can I think he
[1:01:18] Speaker 2: told you O'Connor, we plan on making the playoffs next year.
[1:01:20] Speaker 2: I mean, this guy's not coming there to uh the rebuild.
[1:01:24] Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think it's hard enough to be a GM.
[1:01:26] Speaker 1: I think you have to be very careful about wanting
[1:01:29] Speaker 1: that power. Sean Payton has had some power, but again
[1:01:32] Speaker 1: has a really strong guy. Joe Shane, I don't. I
[1:01:35] Speaker 1: don't think is going to rise to a top five GM.
[1:01:38] Speaker 1: The Saquon Barkley move because it was so public and
[1:01:41] Speaker 1: on TV. But I mean, let's be honest. Abdul Carter
[1:01:45] Speaker 1: was skataboo. Jackson Dart Malik neighbors when he's healthy. I mean,
[1:01:49] Speaker 1: there are some players on this roster that he's done
[1:01:52] Speaker 1: a pretty good job. Joe Shane hasn't. He hasn't whipped
[1:01:54] Speaker 1: I mean Brandon Bean with the Buffalo Bills has. I mean,
[1:01:58] Speaker 1: there's some big whiffs here. Joe Shane's done been more
[1:02:01] Speaker 1: than competent for a lot of his draft picks. The
[1:02:03] Speaker 1: Saquon Bartley thing is going to hang over him forever.
[1:02:07] Speaker 1: That's why that's another reason why you don't want to
[1:02:09] Speaker 1: do one of these HBO Hard Knocks shows. But I
[1:02:13] Speaker 1: my argument is that division between Dallas's dysfunction. You know,
[1:02:17] Speaker 1: Dan Quinn, keep your eyes on that, Adam Peters basically
[1:02:20] Speaker 1: Cliff Kingsbury felt he was bullied. Now you don't have
[1:02:23] Speaker 1: an offensive coordinator Jade and Daniels. You cross your fingers.
[1:02:27] Speaker 1: Siriani's going to maintain his job. So my take it,
[1:02:30] Speaker 1: this is not one of the stronger coach divisions. This
[1:02:32] Speaker 1: is not mcveay, Shanahan and Mike McDonald. Okay, this division
[1:02:36] Speaker 1: is a Harbaugh. The minute you hired Rabel, best coach
[1:02:39] Speaker 1: in the division, the minute you hired John Harbaugh, best
[1:02:42] Speaker 1: coach in the division. That usually works out well.
[1:02:45] Speaker 2: Well, I think what you can see with Washington come
[1:02:47] Speaker 2: from a mile away is Mike Tomlin, because I'm pretty
[1:02:51] Speaker 2: sure Mike Tomlin's from that general area. Yeah, and he's
[1:02:55] Speaker 2: going to go on TV. His stock is only going
[1:02:57] Speaker 2: to skyrocket. And who's their owner? An NBA guy? Who
[1:03:01] Speaker 2: is he hired Doc Rivers. Nick Nurse won an NBA
[1:03:04] Speaker 2: championship in NB get Paul George like, the NBA's a
[1:03:08] Speaker 2: splash your league, and that's he's kind of used to that.
[1:03:11] Speaker 2: And he goes, well, we haven't even won, but we've
[1:03:13] Speaker 2: always been a topic of conversation. We can win and
[1:03:16] Speaker 2: be a topic of conversation. To me, you can see
[1:03:19] Speaker 2: it coming from a mile away. The Tomlin thing. Who's
[1:03:22] Speaker 2: his right hand man now, Bob Myers, NBA guy, their
[1:03:25] Speaker 2: mental Bushott, he's an NFL guy, thinks big picture, can
[1:03:28] Speaker 2: take a deep breath, doesn't live you know, on Twitter,
[1:03:31] Speaker 2: like doesn't even care. Right, most of these NFL owners,
[1:03:34] Speaker 2: they're making so much money. They realize that they've been
[1:03:37] Speaker 2: making the money before social media. They realize how irrelevant
[1:03:40] Speaker 2: is the NBA is a little bit more day to
[1:03:41] Speaker 2: day Internet, all out flashy headlines and Josh Harris like,
[1:03:47] Speaker 2: to me, dan Quinn's a year away. You don't make
[1:03:51] Speaker 2: the playoffs next year, which the Eagles obviously they're coach,
[1:03:54] Speaker 2: but they're gonna be good. You know, they got good players.
[1:03:56] Speaker 1: Dallas. Ben Johnson turned down Washington. His takeaway was the
[1:04:01] Speaker 1: Washington guys, the NBA, Washington guys thought they knew a
[1:04:06] Speaker 1: little more about football than they really did. Those your
[1:04:09] Speaker 1: NBA guys. Yeah, I think the Tomlin thing, I think
[1:04:14] Speaker 1: you're right about. And Tomlin's not a college or a
[1:04:16] Speaker 1: West coast guy. He wants to stay east. That's his heritage,
[1:04:19] Speaker 1: that's his history, that's what he feels comfortable doing. Again,
[1:04:22] Speaker 1: some of these guys, Belichick, Vrabel, Tomlin, Harbaugh, they just
[1:04:27] Speaker 1: feel like they're at home. They feel comfort. Where you
[1:04:29] Speaker 1: live dictates a lot of your happiness and comfort and confidence.
[1:04:33] Speaker 1: And I think you're right.
[1:04:34] Speaker 2: I give Mike a lot of credit if truly and
[1:04:36] Speaker 2: who knows exactly the behind the scenes detail, but if
[1:04:39] Speaker 2: he truly looked in the mirror, and he probably would
[1:04:41] Speaker 2: have known this before the day that he announced, Like,
[1:04:44] Speaker 2: this thing's over, right, they're gonna be better off. I
[1:04:47] Speaker 2: need to move. Sean Payton did the same thing, like, guys,
[1:04:50] Speaker 2: this thing's done, we need both pivot nineteen eighteen years.
[1:04:54] Speaker 2: You know, John Harbaugh, it's hard. I mean, they reports
[1:04:57] Speaker 2: Mike Tomalin's making twenty five million dollars. Most human being
[1:05:00] Speaker 2: to no walk away from that. But he saw this
[1:05:03] Speaker 2: team a lot like the Saints. It's gonna get uglier
[1:05:06] Speaker 2: before it gets better. Yeah, what was the Rooney's quote?
[1:05:09] Speaker 2: We don't plan on rebuilding. Well, bro, you might need
[1:05:12] Speaker 2: to like, yeah, this is twenty twenty six, check your roster.
[1:05:15] Speaker 2: You got problems. So I think Mike Tomlin if dan
[1:05:19] Speaker 2: Quinn is dan Quinn. You know, he's a great guy.
[1:05:23] Speaker 2: People love him. Is he missing? And he's had a
[1:05:26] Speaker 2: good little run there with McCarthy. They had some really
[1:05:28] Speaker 2: good players there for a couple of years. I like,
[1:05:30] Speaker 2: I don't know, you know, I don't know.
[1:05:33] Speaker 1: I think he's mid. I think that's fair. I think
[1:05:36] Speaker 1: he's a nice guy. I think he's pretty mid. I
[1:05:38] Speaker 1: think coaching is getting better and smarter, and I just
[1:05:41] Speaker 1: even defensive coaches. I don't put him in like a
[1:05:43] Speaker 1: Mike McDonald class, or a Robert Solid class, or a
[1:05:46] Speaker 1: Demico Ryan's class, agreed.
[1:05:51] Speaker 2: The volume
