Colin Cowherd is joined by 'First Things First' co-host Danny Parkins. They start with the news that Bill Belichick & UNC could reach a buyout soon. How does this impact Belichick's legacy (2:45)? They debate if Russell Wilson & Jared Goff will make the Pro Football Hall of Fame (13:45). Chicago Bears are looking for revenge from last year's hail mary vs Washington Commanders, who do they like to win (31:30)? They react to Cubs-Brewers and talk about how Chicago would handle losing to the Milwaukee Brewers in the MLB playoffs (37:00). Finally, they give their takes on the Arizona Cardinals fining Jonathan Gannon for his altercation with a player (42:00) and debate using Waymo (56:00). [0:01] Speaker 1: The volume.
[0:03] Speaker 2: Now it's time for this week's Redeemed team member, brought
[0:06] Speaker 2: to you by Hulu's Chad Powers. This week it's Jared Goff,
[0:08] Speaker 2: the underappreciated GoF leads the NFL in passing, touchdowns and
[0:12] Speaker 2: completion percentage despite being on his seventh offensive coordinator Chad
[0:16] Speaker 2: Powers is now streaming with new episodes Tuesday on Hulu
[0:20] Speaker 2: and Hulu on Disney Plus for Bundle subscribers.
[0:22] Speaker 3: Terms apply.
[0:28] Speaker 2: All right, Danny parkins, as he is prone to do
[0:30] Speaker 2: at least once a month, sometimes more. FS one is
[0:34] Speaker 2: joining us and it's a day of breaking news. There
[0:37] Speaker 2: are multiple reports. This is crazy. Sometimes you don't predict something,
[0:41] Speaker 2: but you're not surprised when it happens. Like your buddy
[0:43] Speaker 2: who drives too fast. You wouldn't predict he gets into
[0:45] Speaker 2: a wreck, but if it happens, you know, bangs into
[0:48] Speaker 2: a fire hyder, and you'd be like, well, Bob drives
[0:50] Speaker 2: a little fast. Bill Belichick may not last the season.
[0:54] Speaker 2: They're working on a buyout, and you know, first whenever
[1:00] Speaker 2: you get a friends and family staff, He and Mike
[1:02] Speaker 2: Lombardi kids on the staff, highly compensated. I'm never a
[1:07] Speaker 2: huge fan of that. But I think sometimes we look
[1:12] Speaker 2: at college as this inferior product of the NFL, and
[1:15] Speaker 2: in terms of like talent, it is, but it is
[1:19] Speaker 2: a really hard trail to navigate. Donors, boosters, nil AD, NCAA.
[1:28] Speaker 2: When you're an NFL coach, you have an impulsive owner.
[1:32] Speaker 2: Then you kind of just do what you want to do.
[1:34] Speaker 2: I mean, Brett Veach is not banging down a door
[1:36] Speaker 2: to tell Andy what to run on second and before
[1:39] Speaker 2: I could argue there are more landmines for a college
[1:43] Speaker 2: coach than a pro coach, and I just don't think
[1:46] Speaker 2: Bill at this point has the tolerance for it.
[1:49] Speaker 3: That's kind of my take.
[1:49] Speaker 2: He's just not built for college football.
[1:55] Speaker 1: I don't think he ever wanted to be there in
[1:57] Speaker 1: the first place. He said it at the time, like
[2:01] Speaker 1: I was like, I'm gonna be the last person who
[2:04] Speaker 1: believes that this is going to actually happen, Like it
[2:07] Speaker 1: all felt beneath him, Like I remember when he was
[2:12] Speaker 1: photographed at a Chick fil A in Atlanta after his
[2:15] Speaker 1: interview with Arthur Blank, Like that was two hiring cycles ago,
[2:20] Speaker 1: and then he won, and then he did all of
[2:22] Speaker 1: the media jobs and he was hoping to get another
[2:25] Speaker 1: NFL job and it never came, and so he's like, well,
[2:29] Speaker 1: I guess coaching in college is better than coach than
[2:32] Speaker 1: doing media, and I'm sure for a lifelong coach that
[2:36] Speaker 1: is correct. But then you saw the buyout reports that
[2:40] Speaker 1: it dipped down to just a million boxers, Like, oh,
[2:43] Speaker 1: he wants to leave open any path to get back
[2:46] Speaker 1: to the NFL. He never wanted to be there in
[2:49] Speaker 1: the first place. And then on top of it, the
[2:52] Speaker 1: embarrassment with whatever you think about the girlfriend situation, the
[2:57] Speaker 1: reporting around that, the loser, and then that's all before
[3:03] Speaker 1: any of the things that you're talking about, which are
[3:05] Speaker 1: of course totally true and valid. But like, if you
[3:09] Speaker 1: didn't really want to be there in the first place,
[3:11] Speaker 1: and then you start getting mocked for being there, and
[3:16] Speaker 1: then you start losing, and you've got eighteen year old
[3:18] Speaker 1: kids mouthing off to you, Like he has to be
[3:21] Speaker 1: miserable right now, Colin.
[3:23] Speaker 2: Yeah, And like Labardi's an NFL guy. Charlie Weiss had
[3:26] Speaker 2: some early success at Notre Dame. But Charlie has got
[3:29] Speaker 2: kind of that gruff Northeast personality.
[3:31] Speaker 3: And that's fine.
[3:32] Speaker 2: Some of those guys lived out there for ten years.
[3:34] Speaker 2: I liked a lot of guys like that. They're really
[3:36] Speaker 2: bottom line, they're kind of gruff, they're kind of kurt.
[3:39] Speaker 2: But you know, Carolina, the Carolinas is different. Everybody's got
[3:42] Speaker 2: a little y'all's. It's you know what I mean, Like
[3:45] Speaker 2: Roy Williams, Dean Smith. There's a certain sensibility to it,
[3:49] Speaker 2: and I just it's a weird fit to me. Like
[3:54] Speaker 2: I think I've told you this before. Maybe I'm obsessed
[3:58] Speaker 2: with this, but I'm always surprised when very success, When
[4:02] Speaker 2: very successful, seemingly bright older men can't aren't self aware,
[4:11] Speaker 2: Like Bobby Knight, Bobby, you gotta do the one and done.
[4:15] Speaker 2: Everybody's doing it. You're gonna get inferior players just too stubborn.
[4:20] Speaker 2: And Bill Belichick, Bill, you you can't spit on Robert
[4:25] Speaker 2: Kraft like he's an owner. Owners are tight, don't You're
[4:30] Speaker 2: not going to win. They'd be like me going against
[4:33] Speaker 2: the Murdochs, like just be a good employee, work your
[4:37] Speaker 2: butt off. If they do something you don't like, eat it,
[4:39] Speaker 2: deal with it.
[4:40] Speaker 1: You know.
[4:41] Speaker 2: It's like I just sometimes I see these older men
[4:45] Speaker 2: and they got they get stuck in their ways. We
[4:47] Speaker 2: all know in our twenties, you kind of have to
[4:49] Speaker 2: follow in line. Maybe it's the wealth of maybe it's
[4:53] Speaker 2: the I don't give a damn, but I mean the
[4:56] Speaker 2: idea that he wouldn't let he wouldn't like tweet Drake
[4:59] Speaker 2: may you know stuff because he was a patriot.
[5:03] Speaker 3: Like does that?
[5:04] Speaker 2: I don't know, have you ever thought about that? We've
[5:06] Speaker 2: seen like the Tony Larus's, the Belichicks, the Bobby Knights.
[5:08] Speaker 2: You're like guys, rigid punctures, brilliant, don't do it?
[5:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean Barack Obama said it recently. I mean,
[5:19] Speaker 1: and obviously he's a great orator, but he said something
[5:22] Speaker 1: like eighty percent of the world's problems involve old men
[5:26] Speaker 1: hanging on who are afraid of death and insignificance. Like
[5:30] Speaker 1: there's something to that. And we've got like an age
[5:34] Speaker 1: minimum for you to be president. I'd be interested in
[5:37] Speaker 1: an age maximum, you know, like like a sweet spot
[5:41] Speaker 1: there for just like you want the people who are
[5:44] Speaker 1: governing on the things in our world, like it's to
[5:46] Speaker 1: like maybe impacts them. Uh. And so yeah, I think
[5:50] Speaker 1: like not too come across as too agists here, but
[5:54] Speaker 1: because there are clearly exceptions to the rule. But I
[5:58] Speaker 1: didn't want I would have wanted my NFL t to
[6:00] Speaker 1: hire Pete Carroll, and I know you disagreed on that,
[6:03] Speaker 1: and you like Pete Carroll and by all accounts, Pete
[6:05] Speaker 1: Carroll is like a young mid seventies guys.
[6:08] Speaker 3: I say it was an exception, sure, and.
[6:10] Speaker 1: That's and that's fine, and i'll and i'll you know
[6:13] Speaker 1: better than I do, swag brant you that one. But
[6:15] Speaker 1: like the Bears had an opening. If you told me
[6:17] Speaker 1: it was Ben Johnson or Pete Carroll, I'll take Ben
[6:20] Speaker 1: Johnson eleven times out of ten, even though he's not
[6:23] Speaker 1: proven as a head coach, and Pete Carroll is. But
[6:26] Speaker 1: I'd be betting on upside. I'd be betting on ability
[6:29] Speaker 1: to connect with young players. I'd be betting on a
[6:31] Speaker 1: longer runway where he could stay there. So yeah, I
[6:34] Speaker 1: think that it's a real danger for a ton of
[6:38] Speaker 1: people like that. They just get caught in their way.
[6:41] Speaker 1: They get stuck in their ways and they don't evolve.
[6:45] Speaker 1: You know, there was a reporting that Bill Belichick was
[6:47] Speaker 1: pitching these kids that like North Carolina was gonna be
[6:50] Speaker 1: like the thirty third NFL team. That just seems laughable now,
[6:55] Speaker 1: it's it's it seems so laughable that he thought that
[6:59] Speaker 1: he could just sho go up in Chapel Hill with
[7:01] Speaker 1: inferior talent and just be a pipeline to the to
[7:04] Speaker 1: the pros, plug from my book, by the way, pipeline.
[7:08] Speaker 2: The yeah, the whole thing. You know, there's an there's
[7:17] Speaker 2: a serious argument to me made. I've said this before.
[7:21] Speaker 2: Men are bad at exits. We have a million pickup lines,
[7:25] Speaker 2: but we break up with somebody and don't even text.
[7:27] Speaker 2: We can get into wars. We can always rationalize getting
[7:30] Speaker 2: into wars. We can never get out of them. Men
[7:33] Speaker 2: are bad at exites.
[7:35] Speaker 3: And I when.
[7:38] Speaker 2: Somebody goes through something, I put myself on that spot.
[7:40] Speaker 2: I think what would I would have done? And I
[7:42] Speaker 2: look when Brady retired to New England, and my take,
[7:47] Speaker 2: just for selfishly, for legendary, for legacy preservation, I would
[7:54] Speaker 2: have said, listen, i owe the Crafts one year of stability,
[8:02] Speaker 2: and I'm going to root for Tom Brady harder than
[8:05] Speaker 2: anybody's ever rooted for a player. Will never be the
[8:09] Speaker 2: same franchise without Tom. I'm going to stay for one
[8:12] Speaker 2: year to just get some stability here and get people
[8:15] Speaker 2: kind of ready, and then I'm going to retire and
[8:18] Speaker 2: Bill has kind of a walk off here because if
[8:20] Speaker 2: you remember, they get Cam Newton, he praised Cam Newton.
[8:24] Speaker 2: Cam was past his prime. But you know it was okay,
[8:27] Speaker 2: here comes mac Jones. You know there was a real
[8:31] Speaker 2: moment in time. Bill didn't need the money and he
[8:34] Speaker 2: knew the team wasn't as good, and then he kind
[8:37] Speaker 2: of stayed in state. In fact, I made I said
[8:40] Speaker 2: this on the air, Danny. I said, I don't think
[8:42] Speaker 2: this is true, but knowing Bill's petty and grudge holding personality,
[8:49] Speaker 2: go to that last draft that Bill controlled slowest team
[8:52] Speaker 2: in the league, two kickers and three interior alignment. It
[8:56] Speaker 2: was like he was saying, I'm going to leave you
[9:00] Speaker 2: with an awful roster. I mean they need they At
[9:04] Speaker 2: one point they drafted three guards like two kickers and
[9:08] Speaker 2: they had no speed. And I think I really do
[9:12] Speaker 2: if you look at that last draft, when Belichick knew
[9:15] Speaker 2: he was in trouble, it was the decisions Matt Patricia,
[9:20] Speaker 2: offensive coordinator. It was like he wanted to humiliate. He
[9:23] Speaker 2: knew his legacy was set. He wanted to humiliate the franchise.
[9:26] Speaker 2: I know it sounds crazy and I don't believe it's true,
[9:30] Speaker 2: but it's not the nuttiest thing I've ever said.
[9:33] Speaker 1: Well, no, that's a high bart of clear. Yeah. I
[9:38] Speaker 1: mean he the Patricia the drafts, Like I think there's
[9:44] Speaker 1: like a real legitimate argument to make when you look
[9:47] Speaker 1: at the drafts and beyond the last one of like
[9:49] Speaker 1: Bill Belichick as an evaluator of talent leaves a ton
[9:53] Speaker 1: to be desired.
[9:54] Speaker 3: Oh god, on the offensive side.
[9:56] Speaker 1: That's kind right exactly, And so he is is Someone
[10:01] Speaker 1: asked me earlier, like, do you think this impacts his
[10:03] Speaker 1: legacy because you kind of hinted at that. I don't
[10:07] Speaker 1: think so. Like, I think that it's humiliating right now,
[10:13] Speaker 1: this is very embarrassing. It feels beneath him. And I
[10:16] Speaker 1: thought that, like I said, I said it on FS
[10:19] Speaker 1: one when I was doing Breakfast Ball. I was like,
[10:20] Speaker 1: I don't believe that he's gonna go to North Carolina
[10:23] Speaker 1: because I don't believe he wants to do it. And
[10:25] Speaker 1: now he's just kind of seeing it through and it's
[10:26] Speaker 1: clearly going horribly. But like in twenty years when we're
[10:30] Speaker 1: talking about the greatest coaches of all time, he's gonna
[10:33] Speaker 1: be on everyone's mount rushmore. Like that's his legacy, is secure.
[10:39] Speaker 1: We don't talk about my Wizards, we don't talk about
[10:42] Speaker 1: Emmett Smith with the Cardinals. Like this is like a
[10:46] Speaker 1: of the moment thing. Now, if you want to have
[10:50] Speaker 1: the like who was more responsible for the Patriots dynasty,
[10:55] Speaker 1: Brady or Belichick?
[10:56] Speaker 3: Pretty clear, pretty clear, Pretty.
[10:59] Speaker 1: Clear, even though the earlier Super Bowls before Brady was
[11:02] Speaker 1: really Brady, those were more Belichick, but like the majority
[11:06] Speaker 1: of them were more Tom than Bill. And then obviously
[11:09] Speaker 1: Bill won the or Tom won the breakup with what
[11:12] Speaker 1: happened in Tampa. So like, if you're having that specific
[11:15] Speaker 1: legacy conversation Brady over Belichick, I think now is going
[11:19] Speaker 1: to be not a majority opinion, Like I think it's
[11:22] Speaker 1: going to be a consensus, but his greatest football coach
[11:28] Speaker 1: of coaches of your lifetime. Like he's on one hand right,
[11:32] Speaker 1: you know, if not number one.
[11:35] Speaker 2: And now for our next segment, Whiskey Business. Yes, Whiskey Business,
[11:38] Speaker 2: brought to you by Green River Whiskey, the official whiskey
[11:40] Speaker 2: of the Colin Coward Podcast. I'll throw the set ship
[11:44] Speaker 2: see if you can catch it.
[11:45] Speaker 3: Name the one.
[11:48] Speaker 2: Borderline Hall of Fame guy whose last four years eliminate
[11:55] Speaker 2: him from the Hall of fame.
[11:58] Speaker 3: That it did.
[11:59] Speaker 2: It does subtract from his ten great years.
[12:04] Speaker 1: Well, I mean that's the argument that h Richard Sherman
[12:07] Speaker 1: and Tony Gonzalez were making about Russell Wilson Boom.
[12:10] Speaker 2: Yeah, so there's no question. Yeah, the fall is so precipitous.
[12:16] Speaker 2: He got kinda weird and it's like Pete get out,
[12:21] Speaker 2: Sean get out, Tomlin, get out, Jackson Dart excuse me,
[12:26] Speaker 2: Russ like it was. I mean, Philip Rivers had the
[12:30] Speaker 2: mobility of a batting cage in Indianapolis. He could, he
[12:35] Speaker 2: was I remember his GM Tom Telesco saying he's the
[12:37] Speaker 2: worst athlete right now in the sport and he is unbelievable.
[12:42] Speaker 3: Like Tom loved him.
[12:43] Speaker 2: He's like people understand, he has no athletic ability at
[12:46] Speaker 2: this point in his last year to two, Like it
[12:48] Speaker 2: just he didn't have any left right. Yeah, and he
[12:50] Speaker 2: was never super mobile, but he was. He was a big,
[12:52] Speaker 2: strong athlete. But his last year to two he goes
[12:54] Speaker 2: to Indianapolis, he just can't move, dude. He was out
[12:58] Speaker 2: of this world in Indianapolis. I think they like eleven
[13:00] Speaker 2: and uh were they eleven and five? He got to
[13:04] Speaker 2: a playoff game in Buffalo they played well.
[13:08] Speaker 1: You.
[13:10] Speaker 2: Russell's great years get get a little marginalized because of
[13:19] Speaker 2: Marshawn Lynch the defense, and there was a there was
[13:23] Speaker 2: a two to three year period it was one of
[13:25] Speaker 2: the best rosters in thirty years and then to fall
[13:28] Speaker 2: off a cliff and like elite coaches Tomlin Peyton, Yeah,
[13:32] Speaker 2: like we're not interested at all.
[13:34] Speaker 3: I think it.
[13:35] Speaker 2: I think it keeps Russ out.
[13:37] Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I think it's really really hard to get
[13:40] Speaker 1: into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And you know
[13:44] Speaker 1: it's a little different because like Russ is doing the
[13:47] Speaker 1: same job that he was doing, like Bill like what
[13:49] Speaker 1: comedia and then went to college, right, So it's it's
[13:53] Speaker 1: it's different where it's like Russ NFL quarterback, NFL quarterback.
[13:58] Speaker 1: But there's a lot of I mean, Philip Rivers, Eli Manning,
[14:03] Speaker 1: Matthew Stafford. I saw you talk about Jared Goff, like
[14:09] Speaker 1: in this era of passing football, it's going to be very,
[14:13] Speaker 1: very very difficult for quarterbacks to get in. What is
[14:17] Speaker 1: most interesting to me about the Russ conversation because you
[14:21] Speaker 1: can make the case for him, has the Super Bowl
[14:23] Speaker 1: had the nine or ten years of like consistent excellence
[14:28] Speaker 1: it's just clear that he is not very liked. Like
[14:33] Speaker 1: it's weird, what does Tony Gonzalez have against Russell Wilson.
[14:38] Speaker 1: But you know, like okay, Richard Sherman, maybe they didn't
[14:41] Speaker 1: get along teammates offense defense riff like what but like
[14:45] Speaker 1: a current Hall of Famer, like a gold jacket member saying,
[14:50] Speaker 1: this guy's not going to wear a gold jacket. And
[14:52] Speaker 1: it's not like a steroid situation or like an ethics
[14:57] Speaker 1: moral of the like what did he do? Why does
[15:01] Speaker 1: he have such a strong opinion about it?
[15:03] Speaker 2: I think there's just a sense that Russell's inauthentic. And
[15:08] Speaker 2: I think there you can literally do awful things as
[15:11] Speaker 2: a pro athlete and still have the respect. I mean,
[15:15] Speaker 2: there was a lot of questions about ray Lewis's involvement
[15:19] Speaker 2: with a murder.
[15:20] Speaker 3: Sure he was still respected by athletes.
[15:22] Speaker 2: You can be involved in bankruptcies and infidelity. And but
[15:29] Speaker 2: if guys think in the mob, if they think you're
[15:31] Speaker 2: a rat, doesn't matter.
[15:34] Speaker 3: If you're a big earner, you're a rat.
[15:36] Speaker 2: And in pro football, if guys think you're a phony
[15:39] Speaker 2: and an authentic you're out. I think it's just a line.
[15:42] Speaker 1: You don't Cross, and I think you're probably on it,
[15:46] Speaker 1: and I know that that is just like one clip
[15:48] Speaker 1: from a Thursday night football postgame show that went viral
[15:51] Speaker 1: that is sticking with me. But like if Richard Sherman
[15:55] Speaker 1: would have said that and then Tony Gonzalez would have
[15:58] Speaker 1: kind of like echoed it, I'd be like, Okay, but
[16:03] Speaker 1: how does Tony Gonzalez know that Richard sure that Russell
[16:06] Speaker 1: Wilson's found Like he wasn't in a huddle with him,
[16:08] Speaker 1: He wasn't in a locker with because Russell Wilson might
[16:11] Speaker 1: make the Hall of Fame and then he would be
[16:14] Speaker 1: in a room with Tony Gonzalez and I'd imagine that
[16:17] Speaker 1: would be a little awkward. So it was just I
[16:20] Speaker 1: can't really think of a comp for a current Hall
[16:24] Speaker 1: of Famer campaigning against a prospective Hall of Famer ever,
[16:31] Speaker 1: unless it's unless it's a moral of the game, because
[16:34] Speaker 1: we had there's a million of them in baseball, but
[16:36] Speaker 1: it's all steroids related, Like it's not just like now
[16:40] Speaker 1: that guy's not good enough to get in.
[16:42] Speaker 2: Well, it's funny because let's say I my marriage, I
[16:50] Speaker 2: didn't have co workers at my marriage.
[16:54] Speaker 3: I had a.
[16:55] Speaker 2: Wide a chef, producer, a college from end. I had
[17:01] Speaker 2: a wide an agent, I had a neighbor.
[17:05] Speaker 3: You know, I had a lot.
[17:07] Speaker 2: Of different people, my sister family, my wife's family.
[17:13] Speaker 3: I didn't have broadcasters. Nobody thinks twice about that.
[17:17] Speaker 2: But if you're an athlete and get married, especially a quarterback,
[17:20] Speaker 2: and you don't have any players involved, it is it
[17:25] Speaker 2: does feel unfairly weird. It's like if you owned a
[17:28] Speaker 2: restaurant and you had nobody from the restaurant at your wedding.
[17:32] Speaker 2: Because we know you work eighty hours a week and
[17:35] Speaker 2: nobody goes to your wedding. You kind of feel like
[17:37] Speaker 2: in pro sports it's a brotherhood. They ain't gona have
[17:40] Speaker 2: any players. At your weight, you have like one guy.
[17:43] Speaker 2: And I remember reading that story and thinking that feels odd,
[17:46] Speaker 2: and I thought, what wouldn't be odd?
[17:47] Speaker 3: I didn't have broadcasters. But broadcasters go their own.
[17:50] Speaker 2: Separate way, you know what I mean. Like we go in,
[17:52] Speaker 2: we work, we leave, We don't hang out together. Maybe
[17:54] Speaker 2: your first job at El Paso you do, but you know,
[17:57] Speaker 2: as you move on in Chicago, you got wives and kids.
[18:00] Speaker 2: But it's just one of those things that that was
[18:02] Speaker 2: because I was always a big ross defender. And when
[18:05] Speaker 2: I read that story about getting married and there weren't
[18:08] Speaker 2: players there, I was like, that does feel odd that
[18:11] Speaker 2: that's it, because especially as a quarterback, you'd bring your lineman.
[18:15] Speaker 1: That was the thing. I was just gonna say, the
[18:17] Speaker 1: quarterback doesn't have friends on the team, that that can't
[18:21] Speaker 1: be good. I would want to be his left tackle. Yeah, No,
[18:24] Speaker 1: he's and una way, I've never met Russell Wilson. He's
[18:30] Speaker 1: clearly a little weird, like he's he's a little different,
[18:33] Speaker 1: little eccentric, which is which is fine. It's just it's
[18:37] Speaker 1: surprising still to me to hear that many those high
[18:42] Speaker 1: profile people, teammates and otherwise speak out against him. And
[18:46] Speaker 1: I'm with you at this point. If I had to
[18:48] Speaker 1: bet on it, on him being a finalist but not
[18:51] Speaker 1: getting in, like getting past like the first couple of
[18:53] Speaker 1: rounds down to the final fifteen and not getting in
[18:56] Speaker 1: like Canton is tough. I you know, we've been off
[18:59] Speaker 1: the last you know for baseball playoffs. But I saw
[19:03] Speaker 1: you at a Jared Goff. You have him as a
[19:06] Speaker 1: Hall of Famer.
[19:07] Speaker 2: When you want to enjoy life simpler pleasures, reach for
[19:10] Speaker 2: Green River whiskey, whether it's dry whiskey or single barrel bourbon.
[19:16] Speaker 2: You're getting over a century of craftsmanship packed into every bottle.
[19:19] Speaker 2: Hop on over to Greenriver Whiskey dot com and discover
[19:23] Speaker 2: a legend in a bottle today. No, I've said he
[19:27] Speaker 2: will be a Hall of Famer absolutely, you know, since
[19:30] Speaker 2: twenty seventeen, so that's gonna be nine years. He's like
[19:35] Speaker 2: first in passing touchdowns first, Like yeah, I think people
[19:38] Speaker 2: are shocked. He's had seven offensive coordinators. He was great
[19:43] Speaker 2: with six, like like he works with everybody. And I think,
[19:46] Speaker 2: to me, that's always been it. It'd be one thing
[19:48] Speaker 2: if we're in TV and you had this one great
[19:51] Speaker 2: producer and the rest of your career eight shows bombed.
[19:55] Speaker 2: It's like, Okay, who was your partner? Who was your producer?
[19:58] Speaker 2: Seven coordinators? SA, he's crushed, and it's like, guys his
[20:04] Speaker 2: I always think Hall of Fames are a great ten years.
[20:07] Speaker 2: That's why I never understood the Jim Rice. I know
[20:10] Speaker 2: he wasn't he was difficult with the press or something.
[20:12] Speaker 2: But Jim Rice when I was a kid, was the
[20:14] Speaker 2: best right handed American League power hitter for a decade.
[20:17] Speaker 2: Like it was just like he was one of two.
[20:19] Speaker 2: He and Fred Linn were the Red Sox and like
[20:21] Speaker 2: people went back and forth, and I'm like, what ten
[20:25] Speaker 2: years of greatness is hard for your peak? Maybe eight
[20:30] Speaker 2: physical years. And so if you look at Jared Goff,
[20:33] Speaker 2: he has eight great years. Well, this front office is
[20:36] Speaker 2: so good. Amaran Saint Brown's in his prime. The running
[20:40] Speaker 2: backs one's young, one's not that old. Panay Sewel has
[20:44] Speaker 2: just entered his prime. He's gonna have three to four
[20:47] Speaker 2: big years with Detroit or somebody. Jared's a Hall of
[20:51] Speaker 2: Famer and he's he's made no enemies. Even McVeigh feels
[20:55] Speaker 2: guilty for letting him go.
[20:57] Speaker 1: Which he definitely seems like a very nice guy. Yeah,
[21:00] Speaker 1: I mean Laporta and Jamison Williams are young, you know.
[21:02] Speaker 1: So yeah, he's got got plenty, plenty of young talent.
[21:05] Speaker 1: The numbers are ridiculous. The only thing I would say
[21:09] Speaker 1: is because I love the Lions and they have been
[21:12] Speaker 1: my Super Bowl pick three years in a row. So
[21:15] Speaker 1: eventually maybe I'll get it right. It's not just the
[21:20] Speaker 1: stats thing, you know, like it's it's it's not like
[21:24] Speaker 1: he does he will need to to hoist the trophy
[21:28] Speaker 1: because like I like, I think Stafford is in because
[21:31] Speaker 1: Stafford is going to finish sixth all time in passing.
[21:34] Speaker 3: Yeah, Stafford's in.
[21:36] Speaker 1: I agree, and he had and he has the trophy.
[21:39] Speaker 1: But if Stafford didn't have the trophy.
[21:42] Speaker 3: Very hard probably not, that's what.
[21:44] Speaker 1: But he's got numbers that are farce. I mean, obviously
[21:48] Speaker 1: we'll see where Jared goffends up, but like it's not
[21:50] Speaker 1: like a guarantee that Jared Goffend's up top five all
[21:52] Speaker 1: time in passing yards.
[21:54] Speaker 3: He might, but it helps.
[21:56] Speaker 2: It does help, even though it's not linear. It does
[22:00] Speaker 2: help that Goff is better with the Lions than Stafford was. Yes, yes,
[22:05] Speaker 2: I mean you look at it and you're like, god,
[22:06] Speaker 2: Goff crushed and Stafford never did. Now one of them had, yes,
[22:11] Speaker 2: the best young GM in the sport or one of
[22:13] Speaker 2: the best gms. So it's not apples the orange apples, right,
[22:16] Speaker 2: it's different. But I do think there's you know, that's
[22:20] Speaker 2: just one of those things you look at and you're like, well,
[22:22] Speaker 2: GoF won big in Detroit and we all know it's
[22:24] Speaker 2: same ownership, right, you know, quirky head coach and Dan
[22:28] Speaker 2: Campbell he didn't have McVeigh.
[22:30] Speaker 1: Yeah, but I think that like like in a vacuum
[22:35] Speaker 1: in their prime starting a team, right Stafford, Yeah, right,
[22:42] Speaker 1: exactly exactly and so and again that's also not the
[22:45] Speaker 1: criteria for the Hall of Fame. But I remember a
[22:48] Speaker 1: GM was like, my job is to evaluate individual talent
[22:53] Speaker 1: amidst the team sport. Like that's like the job of
[22:56] Speaker 1: the football general manager, right and so like it's why
[23:00] Speaker 1: I've always been a big Herbert guy and like it
[23:02] Speaker 1: just I watch him. And now, not everyone is a
[23:06] Speaker 1: free agent. We are not doing this to start a team,
[23:08] Speaker 1: But I'm like, that guy is one of the five
[23:10] Speaker 1: best at the position. He just doesn't have he doesn't
[23:12] Speaker 1: have the trophy case for it. Stafford in his prime
[23:16] Speaker 1: always felt like the same type of thing to me,
[23:19] Speaker 1: Like I would love to give Howie Roseman the ability
[23:23] Speaker 1: to build a team around Matt Stafford, to give Brett Viach,
[23:27] Speaker 1: to give Brad Holmes, the general manager of the Lions,
[23:29] Speaker 1: like the build to build around the great quarterback because
[23:33] Speaker 1: the tech he's a Hall of Fame talent. And now
[23:36] Speaker 1: I do think that Stafford has enough of a resume
[23:38] Speaker 1: that he will ultimately get in GOFF. I think is
[23:41] Speaker 1: gonna need a trophy, like if he is has regular
[23:44] Speaker 1: season success and counting stats. The Pro Football Hall of
[23:47] Speaker 1: Fame is really tough to get into, so I think
[23:49] Speaker 1: they're gonna have to break through and start winning in
[23:51] Speaker 1: the playoffs.

[25:17] Speaker 2: in Indiana. If you are somebody you know as a
[25:19] Speaker 2: problem wants help, call one eight hundred and nine with it.
[25:21] Speaker 2: Gambling problem called one eight hundred Gambler Arizona, Colorado, Illinois,
[25:25] Speaker 2: New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia. So let's you had a
[25:36] Speaker 2: very So I've had a couple of winning weeks in
[25:38] Speaker 2: Blazing five, and frankly, I've actually lost three games I
[25:41] Speaker 2: should have won, including Denver Colts.
[25:43] Speaker 3: Which is just outrageous.
[25:45] Speaker 2: I've had a couple of stinkers where I've just not
[25:47] Speaker 2: been able to get a break. Then last week I
[25:51] Speaker 2: got the over on the Titans cars, which I didn't deserve,
[25:54] Speaker 2: although they should have covered that in the second quarter.
[25:57] Speaker 3: Be that as it may.
[25:58] Speaker 2: The most interesting bet on board, and one I'm feeling
[26:01] Speaker 2: really strongly about is Washington minus four and a half
[26:04] Speaker 2: at home against Chicago. So I think a bye week
[26:08] Speaker 2: is really valuable. When you have a veteran quarterback, a
[26:12] Speaker 2: proven coach a Peyton Andy Reid with Mahomes, you can
[26:17] Speaker 2: really add layers to a playbook. Arians and Tom Brady
[26:23] Speaker 2: come out of the by and don't lose again. But
[26:25] Speaker 2: when you have Caleb Williams and you're just got you're
[26:27] Speaker 2: trying to get the basic operations polished, You're just trying
[26:32] Speaker 2: to get the consistency ramped up. You're not really spending
[26:35] Speaker 2: it adding layers and layers to a playbook, so you
[26:38] Speaker 2: don't get that advantage. Also, Washington now Terry McLaurin back
[26:44] Speaker 2: Deebo Samuels. If you watch the second half of the
[26:46] Speaker 2: Chargers Commander's game, Jaden Daniels was Jayden Daniels spinning it, accurate,
[26:51] Speaker 2: moving it was Okay, let's not forget how good he
[26:55] Speaker 2: was last year.
[26:56] Speaker 3: He looked like that guy.
[26:58] Speaker 2: It's one of my favorite of the week. I also
[27:01] Speaker 2: have this. I think I've told you this, the number four.
[27:05] Speaker 2: I always take the favorite because Vegas doesn't want to
[27:07] Speaker 2: make anybody a four to four and a half point favorite.
[27:09] Speaker 2: They want to go three. They want to go seven.
[27:12] Speaker 2: When they do that four, four and a half five,
[27:15] Speaker 2: it's like, Okay, this team is better. We'd prefer we'd
[27:19] Speaker 2: prefer to get it down to three.
[27:20] Speaker 3: They don't want to go to four.
[27:22] Speaker 2: I think Washington's my favorite bet of the week.
[27:26] Speaker 1: Well, I hope you're wrong. We'll start there. I what
[27:34] Speaker 1: I will push back on is you're right. I don't
[27:36] Speaker 1: think that the advantage for the Bears coming out of
[27:38] Speaker 1: the buy is the same as it is for Andy Reid,
[27:43] Speaker 1: Sean Payton, Bruce Arians in terms of like extra game
[27:46] Speaker 1: planning for Washington, like that is probably not what was happening,
[27:51] Speaker 1: but like, you know what I'd settle for as a
[27:53] Speaker 1: Bears guy, figuring out how to run the ball a
[27:58] Speaker 1: little bit like that. I do think that having a
[28:01] Speaker 1: new coach that is trying to instill a new system.
[28:04] Speaker 1: Having an early buy is helpful because it's more about
[28:09] Speaker 1: self scouting. It's more about like an extra week of
[28:12] Speaker 1: training camp. And so yeah, it's maybe not like the
[28:15] Speaker 1: conventional ad, but like, maybe the Bears will get the
[28:19] Speaker 1: play call in a few seconds faster, Maybe they'll have
[28:22] Speaker 1: a few fewer pre snap penalties. Maybe they'd have a
[28:26] Speaker 1: game with no pre snap penalties. That would be amazing,
[28:28] Speaker 1: like and so like, those are low bars to clear,
[28:31] Speaker 1: but I have thought that the Bears have gotten better
[28:36] Speaker 1: week to week to week with Caleb Williams playing on schedule,
[28:40] Speaker 1: playing in the pocket. What Ben Johnson is clearly trying
[28:43] Speaker 1: to get out of him. Some of it was the
[28:44] Speaker 1: opponent right Dallas's defense is a lay up. The Raiders
[28:48] Speaker 1: defense hadn't been very good, that is clearly part of it.
[28:51] Speaker 1: And Washington has a very good pass rush. And we'll
[28:54] Speaker 1: see how healthy the Bears offensive line ends up being.
[28:57] Speaker 1: We don't know who's going to start a left tackle
[28:59] Speaker 1: or right tackle at this moment in time, which is
[29:02] Speaker 1: not great for the Bears. But I do expect the
[29:06] Speaker 1: Bears to play well because I think that they are
[29:08] Speaker 1: I think that they are very bought in on Ben Johnson.
[29:11] Speaker 1: I do think he's a good coach, and I think
[29:14] Speaker 1: that they are going to self scout like Grady Jared
[29:17] Speaker 1: and TJ. Edwards, should help their run defense a little bit.
[29:21] Speaker 1: And I just I'm expecting a great game, So I
[29:24] Speaker 1: don't love it as nearly as much as you do
[29:26] Speaker 1: from either side.
[29:27] Speaker 3: I don't you have a pick you love not in
[29:30] Speaker 3: the game.
[29:31] Speaker 1: I don't. I mean again, but part of this is,
[29:34] Speaker 1: I really, really I've got a lot of like take
[29:37] Speaker 1: equity in Caleb Williams being good and this is such
[29:43] Speaker 1: a fun spot for Ben Johnson and the Bears. Like
[29:46] Speaker 1: everybody left Caleb for dead in the Jaden Daniels Caleb
[29:50] Speaker 1: Williams debate, Right, Jaden has this the best rookie year
[29:54] Speaker 1: I've ever seen. Caleb Williams rocky at best, gets his
[29:59] Speaker 1: play caller fired, as head coach fired. Everyone's got Jayden
[30:02] Speaker 1: Daniels is this great guy. It's also the game you'll
[30:06] Speaker 1: remember where the Bears lost on the Hail Mary last
[30:08] Speaker 1: year they were four and two. Tyreek Stevenson is taunting
[30:13] Speaker 1: the crowd and then his guy catches the Hail Mary
[30:16] Speaker 1: and then the Bears lose ten straight games, so exercising
[30:21] Speaker 1: the demons of the Hail Mary game. Caleb v Jayden,
[30:25] Speaker 1: Ben Johnson out of a bye like I just I
[30:28] Speaker 1: have a sneaking suspicion that we're going to get the
[30:31] Speaker 1: best version of the Bears. They might lose, but I
[30:34] Speaker 1: will be shocked if they play poorly, Like I would
[30:37] Speaker 1: just be shocked if they played poorly. And I still
[30:39] Speaker 1: have enough root in me for the Bears that I'm
[30:42] Speaker 1: just gonna not bet this one because I'll be sweating
[30:44] Speaker 1: it enough, which is a little embarrassing as a degenerate gambler.
[30:48] Speaker 1: But as of now, I have no bet in the game.
[30:50] Speaker 2: All right, baseball, Cubs beat the Brewers four to three.
[30:53] Speaker 2: The Brewers have been the better team all year. It's
[30:56] Speaker 2: going to be frustrating as hell to live in Chicago
[30:58] Speaker 2: and have the Packers and the Brewers small market Milwaukee
[31:01] Speaker 2: be superior organizations.
[31:03] Speaker 3: Although I think Ricketts.
[31:04] Speaker 2: Is a really good, above average owner, really in the community,
[31:07] Speaker 2: really respected, really smart guy. Based on how the Cubs
[31:13] Speaker 2: season is gone, Let's say the Cubs lose in four
[31:18] Speaker 2: or five, how will that be viewed? Because I know
[31:22] Speaker 2: when you're a Mariner fan, they're the only team that's
[31:25] Speaker 2: never been to a World Series. If they get to
[31:27] Speaker 2: the ALCS and they get overwhelmed by Toronto in six,
[31:31] Speaker 2: you'd be like, listen, what a great season. Most of
[31:34] Speaker 2: their guys are in arbitration. It's a young team, I
[31:36] Speaker 2: mean cal Rawley this year's only making two and a half,
[31:38] Speaker 2: like Seattle's young, ascending, loyal fans, only team in the Northwest.
[31:44] Speaker 2: If it goes to the American League Championship Series and
[31:47] Speaker 2: you win some games, it's just a magical season to remember.
[31:50] Speaker 2: New York once Garrett Cole got hurt, was delusional if
[31:53] Speaker 2: they thought they were going to win the thing. The
[31:54] Speaker 2: Dodgers just have far more good players, and the Brewers
[31:56] Speaker 2: ended up being better than the Yankees and the Blue Jays.
[31:59] Speaker 2: I do believe will win that series. They just they
[32:03] Speaker 2: get they hit too much. I mean the Yankee starters.
[32:07] Speaker 3: Toronto is hitting.
[32:08] Speaker 2: Four thirty nine against Yankee starters. It's like Beer League
[32:11] Speaker 2: softball numbers. So, but how are the Cubs viewed because
[32:16] Speaker 2: Milwaukee has been they swept the Dodgers this year, they.
[32:19] Speaker 3: Have been a freight train.
[32:21] Speaker 2: Let's say they lose the next game, or let's say
[32:23] Speaker 2: they take it five and lose.
[32:25] Speaker 3: How will that be viewed in Chicago?
[32:28] Speaker 1: Massive disappointment and wildly frustrating, if not expected. Few layers
[32:35] Speaker 1: to it, and maybe the biggest one is the Cubs
[32:40] Speaker 1: stole Craig Council from the Bridge right their manager. They
[32:45] Speaker 1: made him the highest paid manager in the sport by far.
[32:48] Speaker 1: Everyone has biases, you have to you can trust the
[32:51] Speaker 1: people who admit their biases. I'm friends with Craig Counsel.
[32:55] Speaker 1: He was my brother's childhood best friend. I've known him
[32:58] Speaker 1: since I was six years old. I do a big
[33:00] Speaker 1: charity thing with the Cubs. Like so, I know Craig
[33:03] Speaker 1: pretty well, and I root for the Cubs since I
[33:05] Speaker 1: was a little kid. Craig's brilliant. He's a great manager.
[33:11] Speaker 1: But the Cubs dwarf the Brewers in payroll. They stole
[33:16] Speaker 1: their manager, and they had fewer wins than the Brewers
[33:21] Speaker 1: last year, and they had fewer wins than the Brewers
[33:24] Speaker 1: this year, And then if the Brewers are the team
[33:27] Speaker 1: that eliminates them from the postseason, it's just not acceptable
[33:31] Speaker 1: given the payroll and the resources disparities. It's just not
[33:35] Speaker 1: like and Tom Ricketts, by the way, would say the
[33:39] Speaker 1: same thing, like he will not be happy with the
[33:42] Speaker 1: result of that, and Cubs fans would say, well, then
[33:45] Speaker 1: spend more money. And the Cubs were disappointing at the
[33:49] Speaker 1: deadline because Justin Steele, who's their ace, got hurt in
[33:54] Speaker 1: April out for the year, and they did not make
[33:57] Speaker 1: a big buy at the deadline. They may four moves,
[34:01] Speaker 1: mostly peripherals, smaller moves, and that was seen as very
[34:06] Speaker 1: disappointing because they didn't go out and get a true
[34:08] Speaker 1: difference maker.
[34:09] Speaker 3: Did those moves help.
[34:11] Speaker 1: Well, that's the thing, there really was no true difference
[34:14] Speaker 1: making pitcher who was traded. Like it was a fairly
[34:17] Speaker 1: benign deadline in that way, but fans don't really want
[34:21] Speaker 1: to hear that. And so Steele got hurt in April,
[34:26] Speaker 1: and then Cad Horton's their rookie pitcher, who was an
[34:29] Speaker 1: absolute stud. He got hurt in September, so like so
[34:33] Speaker 1: it was, oh, wow, Horton's gonna be able to carry him,
[34:36] Speaker 1: and then he got hurt right before the playoffs, so
[34:38] Speaker 1: they started Colin. They had an opener in Game two
[34:42] Speaker 1: against the Padres. They did a bullpen game in game
[34:45] Speaker 1: two of the wild card series. Like that's how depleted
[34:48] Speaker 1: the Cub's pitching staff is so at this point and
[34:51] Speaker 1: showed him. Monaga, who they've paid a bunch of money
[34:53] Speaker 1: to and was really good, has been struggling and giving
[34:55] Speaker 1: up a ton of homers and he got shelled in
[34:57] Speaker 1: Game two against Milwaukee. So the Cubs just do not
[35:00] Speaker 1: have enough arms. So I will be shocked if the
[35:03] Speaker 1: Cubs beat the Brewers in this series. I'll be shocked
[35:06] Speaker 1: by it. But a lot of people have wanted to
[35:08] Speaker 1: blame Counsel and I just don't think that that is right.
[35:13] Speaker 1: And yes, again I am friends with him, but I
[35:15] Speaker 1: think objectively, they don't have the arms. They do not
[35:20] Speaker 1: have the horses, and given their payroll and their advantages,
[35:23] Speaker 1: it's wildly disappointing. So hopefully this is a big off
[35:27] Speaker 1: season for them, and I mean listen, first of all,
[35:30] Speaker 1: hopefully they make a run and they shock me and
[35:31] Speaker 1: they make me eat my words. But assuming with your
[35:34] Speaker 1: pretense that they lose in four or five, Cubs fans
[35:37] Speaker 1: are not going to be satisfied with this year because
[35:39] Speaker 1: of the inactivity of the deadline and because of who
[35:42] Speaker 1: they lost to. They feel like they lost a little
[35:44] Speaker 1: brother and pick up and it's embarrassing you.
[35:46] Speaker 3: Know, it's.
[35:50] Speaker 2: It's interesting about how this is more of a player
[35:54] Speaker 2: empowerment era the last fifteen years than previously. Yeah, outside
[36:01] Speaker 2: of the SEC and even that scaled back in the
[36:04] Speaker 2: last three or four years, where you can still break
[36:06] Speaker 2: players like it's the seventies. I mean, not shy of
[36:10] Speaker 2: Woody Hayes, but like, like bad behavior looks like a
[36:13] Speaker 2: lunatic dad screaming at a sun. You can still get
[36:17] Speaker 2: away with that right in the South. I don't think
[36:20] Speaker 2: it works as well in the Big Ten. It's just
[36:22] Speaker 2: a different it. It doesn't work at all on the
[36:24] Speaker 2: West Coast at all.
[36:25] Speaker 1: It's how about how about the Cardinals? The Cardinals? Yeah,
[36:28] Speaker 1: finding finding Jonathan Gannon? I reread that story. It's hard
[36:33] Speaker 1: to cut you off, but I was just like, like,
[36:36] Speaker 1: I didn't see anyone outraged by.
[36:38] Speaker 3: It, Like I didn't see so were you bothered by that?
[36:41] Speaker 1: No? I wasn't. I mean, I like, if a team
[36:45] Speaker 1: wants to find him, that's fine. But like when I
[36:49] Speaker 1: first saw that he was fine, I was like, Oh,
[36:50] Speaker 1: did the NFL find him? And I was like, no,
[36:53] Speaker 1: did the did the players union file a grievance? No?
[36:58] Speaker 1: Was there like a big amount of meat uproar over
[37:01] Speaker 1: what Jonathan Gannon did on the sideline. No, had any
[37:05] Speaker 1: players come out to our knowledge and said that it
[37:09] Speaker 1: was completely out of line, Like no, like he's what
[37:12] Speaker 1: de Marcado did was intergalactically stupid and his coach blew
[37:18] Speaker 1: a gasket, unbecoming. I wouldn't want him to do it
[37:21] Speaker 1: to my kid in little league or even in like
[37:24] Speaker 1: high school football, or I guess we could talk in
[37:26] Speaker 1: college for football and professional sports, I don't know a
[37:33] Speaker 1: misdemeanor at best.
[37:34] Speaker 2: Yeah, because the power dynamic in college or that, you know,
[37:38] Speaker 2: especially in the last twenty years until recently, the coach
[37:42] Speaker 2: is making eight million a year and the players not
[37:44] Speaker 2: making anything.
[37:45] Speaker 3: That's a that's a weird power dynamic, like don't touch
[37:50] Speaker 3: the player. Yeah, of course, I.
[37:51] Speaker 2: Mean what Bobby Knight did now would not be tolerated.
[37:54] Speaker 2: It wasn't tolerated then, frankly.
[37:56] Speaker 1: But no, and no, and nor should it.
[37:58] Speaker 2: But but in but as a pro athlete, yeah, yeah, yeah.
[38:04] Speaker 1: I'm not saying it's good. But I'm also not at
[38:08] Speaker 1: all offended. And and by the way, like he didn't
[38:11] Speaker 1: like he didn't hit him, but you know what I mean,
[38:15] Speaker 1: like he didn't like punch him in the face like
[38:17] Speaker 1: he wasn't like he was pissed, he was angry in
[38:20] Speaker 1: the moment and he made physical contact with him, like
[38:22] Speaker 1: I didn't. It didn't register to me as this terrible thing.
[38:27] Speaker 1: And by the way, I don't care that he got
[38:28] Speaker 1: fined either, Like a private business can discipline and employee
[38:32] Speaker 1: and and that's fine. But I was just wondering, like,
[38:37] Speaker 1: who were they doing that on behalf of Like who
[38:40] Speaker 1: who was actually offended by what Jonathan Gannon did to
[38:44] Speaker 1: make them feel like they needed to discipline? It made
[38:47] Speaker 1: made it made it, It made like the owner, like
[38:50] Speaker 1: maybe just like the owner the owner was.
[38:51] Speaker 2: As well as probably the weakest owner in the league.
[38:54] Speaker 3: Honestly.
[38:55] Speaker 2: Yeah, interesting guy. I think I think there are certain
[39:02] Speaker 2: things the media is more bothered by than like fans,
[39:08] Speaker 2: and I think one of them is treatment of players.
[39:12] Speaker 2: It's always like, I mean, I could name writers that
[39:15] Speaker 2: they're you know, I mean, good god, Kaepernick sued the league.
[39:19] Speaker 2: He's not going to get a lot of calls when
[39:21] Speaker 2: there's an opening at quarterback like.
[39:24] Speaker 1: A bunch of media outraged over Gannon.
[39:27] Speaker 2: Oh no, no, no, no, I'm saying, like, but I remember
[39:29] Speaker 2: during the Kaepernick years. I'm like, guys, he sued the league.
[39:33] Speaker 2: If an employee sued me at the volume and he won,
[39:38] Speaker 2: there's no collusion. I wouldn't hire them again. I wouldn't
[39:42] Speaker 2: want the headache. There is no collusion that you don't
[39:46] Speaker 2: have to say certain things, and it's understood. Like when
[39:48] Speaker 2: you're a kid and mom or dad are pissed, the
[39:51] Speaker 2: kids don't have to gather and vote on the outcome
[39:54] Speaker 2: if you do something stupid again, like they're upset, don't
[39:57] Speaker 2: play ball in the house like this. Everybody know, certainly
[40:00] Speaker 2: your wife's upset with you. I think tonight, tonight, I'll
[40:05] Speaker 2: agree with everything she says, like right, like everybody in
[40:08] Speaker 2: the house gets that.
[40:09] Speaker 3: It's the same.
[40:11] Speaker 2: So, but I do think the media in Phoenix may
[40:15] Speaker 2: have been very pro player and you can't touch a player,
[40:18] Speaker 2: and owners listen and read that stuff and are influenced
[40:23] Speaker 2: by it. Because my take was I would have strongly
[40:26] Speaker 2: considered cutting the player.
[40:28] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, that I wouldn't bother me. I looked it
[40:33] Speaker 1: up because I wasn't like one hundred percent sure, like
[40:36] Speaker 1: he's the exact type of player that you can cut, right,
[40:42] Speaker 1: I mean, it's not like when DeShawn Jackson did it,
[40:45] Speaker 1: like a decade and a half ago, Like, you're not
[40:48] Speaker 1: cutting DeShawn Jackson, right, like bonehead move, but one of
[40:53] Speaker 1: the best deep threats in the NFL for a decade,
[40:55] Speaker 1: Like you're not cutting Deshan but like a third year
[41:00] Speaker 1: running back on a minimum contract who had eight carries
[41:05] Speaker 1: before like leading into that game, like you can cut
[41:08] Speaker 1: that guy and so and again I'm this is I'm
[41:12] Speaker 1: not condoning making physical contact with but like Andy Reid
[41:16] Speaker 1: and Travis Kelcey physical altercation every six weeks, like and
[41:22] Speaker 1: the one that happened a couple of weeks ago was
[41:26] Speaker 1: Andy Reid initiating the physical contact with Travis Kelcey. Like
[41:31] Speaker 1: it just maybe Phoenix media was pissed. Maybe there was
[41:35] Speaker 1: some sort of huge outcry that I completely missed, But
[41:40] Speaker 1: I'm pretty online and I'm pretty plugged into the media.
[41:45] Speaker 1: All of it was what a bonehead played by de Marcado?
[41:48] Speaker 1: And how could it happen the week after? Yeah, Dane
[41:51] Speaker 1: and I Mitchell did it.
[41:53] Speaker 2: We've had it happened three times because there was a
[41:56] Speaker 2: Jets running back who did it too. And I went
[41:59] Speaker 2: on the air that next day and I said. My
[42:01] Speaker 2: belief on why it's happening more because young people are performative,
[42:06] Speaker 2: and it starts with TikTok and ig and everybody's performative.
[42:09] Speaker 2: Go to a restaurant, people can't eat without taking pictures
[42:12] Speaker 2: of their food. You can't go anywhere in Italy, in Florence,
[42:16] Speaker 2: it's just young people taking pictures. I've never taken a selfie.
[42:19] Speaker 2: I just I'm not going to do it. I've taken
[42:22] Speaker 2: pictures of my wife and I together to send.
[42:24] Speaker 3: To the kids.
[42:26] Speaker 2: Yeah, but it's we live in this world where twenty somethings,
[42:30] Speaker 2: they're performative. They're always on camera and so as they're scoring,
[42:36] Speaker 2: the first thing many of them think about is I
[42:40] Speaker 2: want to put on a show. What will this look
[42:43] Speaker 2: like if friends take a picture of it? And like
[42:45] Speaker 2: ad Mitchell never scored a touchdown before, like the idea
[42:49] Speaker 2: that in that moment, the first thing you're thinking of
[42:52] Speaker 2: is show voting is it's beyond me. And apparently Adie
[42:56] Speaker 2: Mitchell is very liked by the Colts and you know
[42:59] Speaker 2: in the room. But yeah, I think you have to
[43:03] Speaker 2: send messages. I would cut players who did that. Football

[43:54] Speaker 2: game Time App today. I want to end with this
[44:00] Speaker 2: because it's kind of a think piece. Derek Thompson writes
[44:03] Speaker 2: for The Atlantic. He's one of my favorite writers. He's
[44:05] Speaker 2: got he's kind of a theorist. He loves new data,
[44:08] Speaker 2: he loves culture changes. And last week he was talking
[44:14] Speaker 2: and he acknowledges he is center left and he admits it,
[44:19] Speaker 2: you know, he doesn't hide it. But I think he's
[44:21] Speaker 2: a really interesting read. I think he does a podcast
[44:23] Speaker 2: for The Ringer. We at the volume, we weren't really
[44:25] Speaker 2: interested in him, We didn't reach out, but he was
[44:27] Speaker 2: one of the two or three people that we were
[44:29] Speaker 2: just fascinated with. And he and it's really an interesting thing.
[44:34] Speaker 3: He brought up this week.
[44:35] Speaker 2: He was complaining about conservatives doing something and he goes,
[44:39] Speaker 2: but what equally drives me crazy is that progresses in California.
[44:45] Speaker 2: Many are against Waimo and their take is we are
[44:50] Speaker 2: unemploying people, that this is not good for jobs. And
[44:54] Speaker 2: his argument was time out. We do not want to
[44:57] Speaker 2: be the party that's anti tech. Servatives are anti science.
[45:02] Speaker 2: We can't be anti tech. And I read that and
[45:05] Speaker 2: I thought it is fascinating. I used to live in Oregon,
[45:08] Speaker 2: very liberal, and gas stations you can't pump your own gas.
[45:13] Speaker 2: And Oregon's theory is it keeps thousands of people employed
[45:17] Speaker 2: in the state of Oregon and it rains a lot.
[45:22] Speaker 2: So I kind of like somebody pumping my gas, to
[45:24] Speaker 2: be honest with you. And by the way, gas.
[45:26] Speaker 3: Stations are kind of dirty. You know, you're touching stuff.
[45:29] Speaker 2: So it's like I always kind of thought it was cool.
[45:31] Speaker 2: He talked to the guy or gal and it's like
[45:34] Speaker 2: that's good. So where would you fall on this? It
[45:37] Speaker 2: absolutely will create job loss. I mean, there's no question
[45:43] Speaker 2: uber drivers are in big trouble in California because I'm
[45:46] Speaker 2: telling you where I live, Way Moa cars are everywhere, Dannie,
[45:50] Speaker 2: and I prefer them. Nothing against the driver, but no driver.
[45:55] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[45:56] Speaker 2: And by the way, nobody has stale candy. Nobody wants
[45:59] Speaker 2: to ask me about the eagles. I get in the car,
[46:02] Speaker 2: it gets there fast, and I'm.
[46:05] Speaker 3: A way mo guy.
[46:06] Speaker 1: Wow.
[46:07] Speaker 2: Then tens of thousands of people could lose their jobs.
[46:11] Speaker 2: As somebody you acknowledge your center left. What do you
[46:15] Speaker 2: do if you're a Democrat in California. So my take
[46:21] Speaker 2: is I'm pro technology and nobody has a right to
[46:23] Speaker 2: a job. I grew up in a fishing village, and
[46:26] Speaker 2: because the state of Washington limited salmon distribution or the
[46:31] Speaker 2: number of salmon you could catch, salmon fisherman lost work.
[46:34] Speaker 2: And my stepdad, who was a very much kind of
[46:37] Speaker 2: a man of nature and a man of earth and
[46:40] Speaker 2: a fisherman, and I used to argue with him, I'm
[46:43] Speaker 2: going into broadcasting.
[46:44] Speaker 3: If radio die tomorrow, I don't have a right to
[46:46] Speaker 3: a job.
[46:48] Speaker 2: And so it was like, you know, just because you're
[46:50] Speaker 2: a fisherman at twenty eight doesn't mean you want at
[46:52] Speaker 2: forty eight. Like states have legislation they protect our earth.
[46:56] Speaker 2: So I'm for Waymo, which means I'm I have a
[47:00] Speaker 2: four job loss.
[47:01] Speaker 3: Where do you land?
[47:03] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's a good one, I think in I am
[47:09] Speaker 1: pro innovation and I am and like, there's a lot
[47:14] Speaker 1: of problems with capitalism, but it might be it's the
[47:16] Speaker 1: best we got, like that of a play on that
[47:19] Speaker 1: the old you know, democracy is the worst form of
[47:21] Speaker 1: government except for all the other ones, you know, and
[47:25] Speaker 1: so like, are there problems with it? Yes, are there
[47:29] Speaker 1: unintended consequences? Absolutely, But I don't think you want to
[47:33] Speaker 1: be in the business of stifling innovation because what's the
[47:38] Speaker 1: next thing that that would Like I'd be thrilled if
[47:41] Speaker 1: there was some level of innovation that made pediatric cancer
[47:46] Speaker 1: doctors have to go extinct because we had solved it,
[47:50] Speaker 1: you know, And so like it's the type of thing
[47:51] Speaker 1: where like just in general, innovation is good, Like the
[47:56] Speaker 1: easy pass put tollbooth workers out of business. But it's
[48:01] Speaker 1: objectively better. We don't have to stop, we don't have
[48:05] Speaker 1: to keep coins in our car. We can just keep
[48:09] Speaker 1: going on our drive. But it put people out of
[48:12] Speaker 1: business for a better way of life. So I've never
[48:15] Speaker 1: been in a driverless car before, so I'm glad that
[48:19] Speaker 1: I wouldn't be the test case for it. So like,
[48:21] Speaker 1: I'm glad to hear that you're doing it and it's
[48:23] Speaker 1: going well. But like I think that type off if
[48:28] Speaker 1: they can do it, and they clearly can, and I
[48:31] Speaker 1: I'm aware of Waimo, and I'm aware of the fact
[48:34] Speaker 1: that this is becoming more and more popular. Like, it's
[48:37] Speaker 1: just gonna lead to less auto crashes. It's gonna lead
[48:40] Speaker 1: to people being safer, it's gonna lead a few it's
[48:43] Speaker 1: gonna lead to fewer deaths. Oh right.
[48:45] Speaker 2: Question, Also, there are safety concerns with women and male
[48:50] Speaker 2: Uber drivers. I mean, that's nothing against Tuber. There have
[48:52] Speaker 2: been lots of lawsuits. You can go back and look
[48:54] Speaker 2: at the history of Uber, right, I've been lots of lawsuits.
[48:58] Speaker 2: You eliminate that eliminate. I mean, there's no question the
[49:02] Speaker 2: number of card desks will plummet in America.
[49:05] Speaker 1: So like that, to me, obvious negative is the job loss,
[49:11] Speaker 1: but there are so many also positives that come with
[49:14] Speaker 1: it that that one, to me is not terribly difficult
[49:18] Speaker 1: to be like, yeah, I'm fine with it. Fine, I'm
[49:21] Speaker 1: fine with it. And in general, again like I there's
[49:25] Speaker 1: this there's a story arc in The Wire, The Wired.
[49:27] Speaker 1: To me, he's the greatest television show ever And that
[49:31] Speaker 1: show came out twenty years ago, twenty plus years ago
[49:35] Speaker 1: about like the the dock workers and how they could
[49:39] Speaker 1: unload and offload ships like cargo ships, big containers that
[49:43] Speaker 1: weigh you know, thousands of tons and all that stuff.
[49:46] Speaker 1: And there were the Stevendors were like, that's gonna put
[49:50] Speaker 1: us out of jobs. And they're like, yeah, but you're
[49:54] Speaker 1: not gonna die on the job. And then the stevend
[49:56] Speaker 1: Door's like, but I'd rather get injured on the job
[49:58] Speaker 1: and have a job. But that's not that's not the point.
[50:01] Speaker 1: The guy who developed the technology to offload the cargo
[50:05] Speaker 1: ship faster, more efficiently, no stealing, no injuries, that guy
[50:10] Speaker 1: created that company to do it. That was innovation, it
[50:13] Speaker 1: was progress, moving it forward. And so it sucks and
[50:17] Speaker 1: by the way, you mentioned the radio thing. I'm thirty.
[50:21] Speaker 1: I turned thirty nine in two weeks. I have no
[50:24] Speaker 1: idea what the next twenty years of media is going
[50:26] Speaker 1: to look like, and like what my career in this industry,
[50:30] Speaker 1: cable television, cord cutting, podcasting. It keeps evolving. We have
[50:37] Speaker 1: to keep evolving in our field. A lot of people
[50:39] Speaker 1: have to keep evolving in theirs. So it doesn't I
[50:42] Speaker 1: feel bad for the individual who would lose their job
[50:46] Speaker 1: enough to make me anti innovation and progress.
[50:50] Speaker 2: I mean, listen, I did local TV sportes that kind
[50:53] Speaker 2: of dried up.
[50:54] Speaker 1: That's a good example. That was a job that in Chicago.
[50:59] Speaker 3: Using million dollars a year twenty years ago.
[51:01] Speaker 1: Correct, correct, that's exactly that. That was a seven figure
[51:05] Speaker 1: job into the first part of the twenty first century.
[51:10] Speaker 1: Like Mark jing Greco, friend of mine in Chicago, legend
[51:14] Speaker 1: covered with the bulls, dynasties and all that, he was
[51:17] Speaker 1: still making north of a million dollars into the two thousands. Now,
[51:20] Speaker 1: the people that have that job low six figures and
[51:24] Speaker 1: nobody watches. You know, it's just a it's just a
[51:27] Speaker 1: completely different ecosystem. And that's just the that's the way
[51:30] Speaker 1: of the world. So are you are you? You're totally
[51:33] Speaker 1: Have you ever had an issue? By the way drivers cam? Yeah,
[51:36] Speaker 1: the vast majority of people here have never been in
[51:38] Speaker 1: a driver listening to this has never been in a
[51:40] Speaker 1: driverless car.
[51:41] Speaker 3: Yeah, I've been in three.
[51:42] Speaker 2: They're fantastic, and I'm not I'm not anti Uber. I've
[51:47] Speaker 2: spent a lot of money on Uber, but there is
[51:50] Speaker 2: a gap in Uber drivers and if you go, if
[51:55] Speaker 2: you go the lower levels of Uber. I had an
[51:58] Speaker 2: Uber driver because I had a very short drive recently
[52:00] Speaker 2: in Chicago. He pulled up to my street and stopped
[52:05] Speaker 2: in the middle of the street, didn't pull into my driveway.
[52:08] Speaker 2: There were thirty cars as I walked on the road
[52:11] Speaker 2: to get in and like bowed my head and apologized
[52:14] Speaker 2: and yeah, I mean yeah. And it was the cheapest
[52:17] Speaker 2: level of it because it was like a six minute
[52:19] Speaker 2: drive to the train station. So like weaimo, everybody's good.
[52:24] Speaker 2: They're all the exact same. There's no good, bad smelly.
[52:27] Speaker 2: I mean, I've gotten into Uber cars before and the
[52:30] Speaker 2: music's loud and it smells like hygiene issues. It's like
[52:34] Speaker 2: it's rare, but it happens. Yeah, And there's no question
[52:39] Speaker 2: I So I in Chicago. I take an Uber every
[52:43] Speaker 2: day about a seven to ten minute drive from where
[52:47] Speaker 2: I work to otc Ogilvy train station. Yep, the gap
[52:52] Speaker 2: incompetency is startling. Yeah, seven to eight minutes for ten
[52:59] Speaker 2: to fifth Now, mind at twelve, I've had twenty three times?
[53:05] Speaker 1: Now can I can I make a small suggestion to
[53:07] Speaker 1: you before Weymo gets to Chicago. You're a pretty successful guy, Colin.
[53:12] Speaker 1: You can go Uber black. You can? You know, you
[53:17] Speaker 1: know you don't have to. You don't have to be
[53:18] Speaker 1: in the Uber X to save your nine bucks and
[53:21] Speaker 1: get in the back of someone's Corolla like you can.
[53:24] Speaker 1: You can. You could pay up for your Uber black
[53:26] Speaker 1: and get in a suburban buddy.
[53:27] Speaker 2: You don't know, Anne, somebody in our family has to
[53:30] Speaker 2: save money.
[53:33] Speaker 1: Fair enough, you know. Nick. Nick and I went to
[53:38] Speaker 1: You'll like this, Nick, and you can cut it if
[53:40] Speaker 1: you want. But Nick and I went to the US
[53:42] Speaker 1: Open and he and getting out of there with cars
[53:46] Speaker 1: is a disaster. And I live in Westchester, which is
[53:50] Speaker 1: suburban New York, and Nick lives in Harlem. So we
[53:53] Speaker 1: were going to go from US Open to Harlem to
[53:57] Speaker 1: the suburb that I live in. So two stops and
[53:59] Speaker 1: Nick got like an Uber Black because there was just
[54:04] Speaker 1: saved us, you know, thirty plus minutes of like finding
[54:08] Speaker 1: the car, just because leading the us of them. And
[54:10] Speaker 1: he's like, it was three hundred bucks for the car,
[54:13] Speaker 1: spensive car, and he's like, you owe me. He's like,
[54:16] Speaker 1: you know what, he has the ticket. It's very generous,
[54:18] Speaker 1: and he's like, you know, let's split the car. He's like,
[54:20] Speaker 1: you only one hundred and fifty bucks with the car,
[54:22] Speaker 1: and I had one hundred and thirty in cash on me,
[54:25] Speaker 1: and I gave him the one thirty and said if
[54:27] Speaker 1: I would have gotten the car, I would have gotten
[54:29] Speaker 1: Uber X. He's like sometimes like, so take your one thirty.
[54:35] Speaker 1: He was like all right, and so I am. I
[54:39] Speaker 1: am the you in this analogy, but I'm hoping that
[54:42] Speaker 1: if I'm ever at your level, I will be the
[54:44] Speaker 1: Nick and the analogy and just pay for the Uber Black.
[54:47] Speaker 3: By the way, it doesn't really change. It doesn't matter.
[54:52] Speaker 1: Okay.
[54:53] Speaker 2: My wife, my wife to this day will be like,
[54:56] Speaker 2: you have six pair of shoes. I know what you make,
[54:59] Speaker 2: and I'm like, I can live on four. Six is
[55:04] Speaker 2: really pushing it. That's two jogging shoes, Like, come on,
[55:07] Speaker 2: how many brown shoes do you need?
[55:09] Speaker 3: One's the answer?
[55:10] Speaker 1: Ones? What is the end? Yeah, I think I've had
[55:14] Speaker 1: I've wont like eleven pairs of jeans in my life.
[55:21] Speaker 2: I wore I wore a pair of pants today and
[55:26] Speaker 2: I've had these easily a decade. They're gray, and I
[55:29] Speaker 2: always argue they go with everything and they go with
[55:31] Speaker 2: nothing simultaneously. And I had to do a shoot today
[55:35] Speaker 2: and I'm like, could you guys not put these on
[55:37] Speaker 2: camera for a Fox Sunday shoot? And They're like, yeah,
[55:40] Speaker 2: the way the shot works, they're gonna be on camera.
[55:42] Speaker 2: And I'm like, does AI change? Like can we use
[55:47] Speaker 2: that thing on these pants? So I wear stuff to
[55:51] Speaker 2: work that I'm embarrassed to put on camera, and I'm
[55:53] Speaker 2: in a weird way, I'm really proud of it.
[55:56] Speaker 1: Yeah, of course. I mean, you know Superman wore the
[56:00] Speaker 1: same thing every day. Steve Jobs wore the same thing
[56:05] Speaker 1: every day?
[56:06] Speaker 3: Or is that in the video guy?
[56:08] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, exactly. The Nvidia guy wears the same thing
[56:11] Speaker 1: every day. We're in a good company. We're in good company.
[56:13] Speaker 3: Danny Parkins, good talking to anybody.
[56:15] Speaker 1: Oh, Colin, thank you. The volume
