Colin’s joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” to break down all the week 6 NFL action. They start with the Bucs beating the 49ers despite both teams suffering from a rash of injuries and Colin argues that Baker Mayfield should be the leading candidate for MVP and John highlights that the 49ers gave $277 million in the offseason to three players who are hurt (2:30). They pivot to the Broncos narrow win over the Jets and Colin’s takeaway…the Jets coaching is the worst he’s ever seen and the Broncos were LUCKY win with how poorly Bo Nix and their offense played (11:30). They move to the Steelers win over the Browns and why the Steelers big-bodied wide receivers are the perfect compliment to Aaron Rodgers at this stage of his career, and why the Steelers are starting to feel like a real team that could wrap up the division by December (25:00). They react to the Chargers snapping their losing streak in a late win over the Dolphins despite being ravaged by injuries, and highlight the massive dysfunction in Miami and Justin Herbert’s heroics in carrying his team to victory (33:45). They laud Dak Prescott & George Pickens play despite the Cowboys loss to Carolina in the Rico Dowdle revenge game, and argue that Bryce Young can be a functional quarterback when he’s not playing a great defense (50:00). They highlight Seattle winning 9 straight road games after beating Jacksonville and the high level play from Sam Darnold and Jaxon Smith-Njigba through the first six games (59:30). They argue that Drake Maye is a hit at quarterback for the 4-2 Patriots (1:06:45). They react to James Franklin being fired as head coach of Penn State after disastrous losses to UCLA & Northwestern and wonder if Penn State runs the risk of being forced into hiring an interim coach if the team rallies (1:16:00). Finally, they recap USC’s dominant win over Michigan and why it helped to dispel the notion the Lincoln Riley’s teams are “soft” (1:27:00). [0:01] Speaker 1: The volume. Now it's time for this week's Redeemed team members,
[0:05] Speaker 1: brought to you by Hulu's Chad Powers. This week it's
[0:07] Speaker 1: King Miller, the amazing freshman walk on running back for USC.
[0:11] Speaker 1: One hundred and fifty eight rushing yards in USC's went
[0:14] Speaker 1: over Michigan. He became the first walk on to score
[0:17] Speaker 1: a touchdown for SC since nineteen ninety four. Chad Powers
[0:20] Speaker 1: is now streaming with new episodes Tuesdays on Hulu and

[0:28] Speaker 1: episode is presented by Uber Eats. When football makes you hungry,
[0:32] Speaker 1: order Uber Eats. I do every weekend all right, Time
[0:36] Speaker 1: for our Sunday Night podcast with John Middlecoff, host of
[0:40] Speaker 1: three and out former NFL scout. I had a four
[0:44] Speaker 1: to oh day in the Blazing five. I have Washington tomorrow,
[0:47] Speaker 1: which I feel great about. That was my favorite pick
[0:49] Speaker 1: of the week. It's been established the Jets may have
[0:53] Speaker 1: the worst coach I've ever seen in Tennessee, may have
[0:55] Speaker 1: the worst personnel I've ever seen. But let's start Tampa
[0:58] Speaker 1: Bay thirty, San Francisco nineteen right now, Baker Mayfield, think
[1:05] Speaker 1: about this. They averaged seven point three yards of play.
[1:08] Speaker 1: No Mike Evans, no Chris Godwin, if Buca gets hurt,
[1:13] Speaker 1: no Bucky Irving. The leading pass catcher was Kate Otton, who,
[1:17] Speaker 1: by the way, is a nice tight end out of Washington,
[1:19] Speaker 1: Sterling Shepherd, Tesz Johnson, Tess had a great catch. I mean,
[1:24] Speaker 1: I think Baker has to be your MVP at this point.
[1:26] Speaker 1: I mean he had he had had a magical, emotional,
[1:32] Speaker 1: magical scramble for a first down. I mean, listen, San
[1:36] Speaker 1: Francisco's all beat up, but I mean Tampa is going
[1:40] Speaker 1: to Seattle and winning. Tampa's in the Bay and winning.
[1:43] Speaker 1: I think they're as good as anybody in the league
[1:46] Speaker 1: right now, and I think Baker's my MVP.
[1:48] Speaker 2: Yeah to me, I mean they're ceiling rests on those
[1:50] Speaker 2: guys being healthy, because if they are healthy, they'd have
[1:53] Speaker 2: a chance to beat anybody because their offense, I mean,
[1:55] Speaker 2: hal potent will be with those three wide receivers. Pretty
[1:58] Speaker 2: incredible story. I mean, the Cleveland Browns, who have that
[2:01] Speaker 2: long history of having a million quarterbacks finally get a
[2:05] Speaker 2: guy and draft him number one overall. And John Dorsey
[2:08] Speaker 2: was right, but it didn't quite look right immediately. And
[2:12] Speaker 2: now he's fulfilling, like I'm the number one overall quarterback.
[2:15] Speaker 2: The farving qualities, the moxie, the passes. Colin last year,
[2:20] Speaker 2: I was like, you know, Baker Mayfields a really good player.
[2:21] Speaker 2: This guy's like a top ten quarterback to right now,
[2:23] Speaker 2: he's one of the best players in the league, like
[2:26] Speaker 2: MVP or not. I mean he's just on a weekly basis,
[2:28] Speaker 2: one of the best players in the league.
[2:30] Speaker 1: Yea.
[2:31] Speaker 2: And for a smaller quarterback, he's an excellent pocket passer.
[2:35] Speaker 2: Great feels like he has no trouble seeing I don't
[2:38] Speaker 2: know if he finds angles. Maybe it's just some instinctive
[2:41] Speaker 2: quality that he has. I mean, you know Purty who
[2:43] Speaker 2: didn't play today, it's another smaller quarterback struggles a little
[2:46] Speaker 2: bit throw over the middle of the field. Obviously Baker's
[2:49] Speaker 2: arm strength. Yeah, he's just playing at an elite level.
[2:51] Speaker 2: I mean he's twenty five to one Colin to start
[2:53] Speaker 2: the season, and I look before this, I think like
[2:56] Speaker 2: Thursday or Friday, he was down to eight to one.
[2:58] Speaker 2: I would imagine he will continue, you two, rise up
[3:00] Speaker 2: into the Josh Allen category as the season goes.
[3:03] Speaker 1: So I when I picked the Niners despite an easier
[3:06] Speaker 1: than average schedule to finish second or third in their division.
[3:09] Speaker 1: I said, I'll take the Rams and the Seahawks to
[3:11] Speaker 1: win the division. I said, I love the coach. Perty's
[3:14] Speaker 1: good enough. This is an old, brittle roster. You looked
[3:18] Speaker 1: it up today. How much money is not playing right
[3:21] Speaker 1: now due to injury?
[3:22] Speaker 2: Well, they gave three contracts this offseason, Bruck Perty, you
[3:25] Speaker 2: know in guarantee money. Guaranteed money got one hundred and
[3:28] Speaker 2: eighty million dollars. He's played two games, and Ben is
[3:32] Speaker 2: injured now and who knows when he's coming back. They
[3:34] Speaker 2: gave Fred Warner and George Kittle a combined ninety six
[3:38] Speaker 2: million dollars, so a total of two hundred and seventy
[3:41] Speaker 2: seven million dollars. And obviously Fred Warner day shatters his ankle,
[3:45] Speaker 2: Kittle has been out since early on in that first game.
[3:48] Speaker 2: And Purty again, if you told me over under right now?
[3:51] Speaker 2: Does he played five games this season? I probably take
[3:53] Speaker 2: the under. So they gave two hundred and seventy seven
[3:56] Speaker 2: million dollars too. I mean two Hall of famers and
[3:58] Speaker 2: Warner and Kittle and their starting quarterback and none of
[4:01] Speaker 2: them like you just can't overcome that count. And that's
[4:03] Speaker 2: not even counting. I mean Nick Bosa, who you know,
[4:06] Speaker 2: when he's healthy and playing like he was this season,
[4:08] Speaker 2: one of the best players in the league. It was gone.
[4:11] Speaker 2: So it's like, what aux nowhere to be found? Ricky Piersoll,
[4:15] Speaker 2: who looked excellent early in this season, has just gone
[4:18] Speaker 2: injured knee. Like I've never seen anything like this on
[4:22] Speaker 2: a weekly basis. Did the constant just guy's careers are altered,
[4:26] Speaker 2: Not like hey, he you know he rolled an ankle
[4:28] Speaker 2: or dingden elbow. It's like, no, his career is altered.
[4:32] Speaker 2: It's it's almost unfathomable because now we have a history. Right,
[4:37] Speaker 2: seven of the last eight years, they have been one of,
[4:39] Speaker 2: if not the most injured team in the league. And
[4:41] Speaker 2: you look around the league and you go a bunch
[4:43] Speaker 2: of injuries and Fred Warner had nothing to do with
[4:45] Speaker 2: like training or whatever. Someone falls on his ankle, on
[4:47] Speaker 2: his ankle from behind. But the amount and the amount
[4:51] Speaker 2: of money they've invested in it, it's one thing when
[4:53] Speaker 2: it's kind of random guys. It's it's critical elite Hall
[4:56] Speaker 2: of Famer guys that set the contract standard at their position.
[5:00] Speaker 2: What are you supposed to do? You know, I don't know.
[5:03] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean it's it's one of those things where
[5:06] Speaker 1: they've missed on just enough draft picks and they've hit
[5:10] Speaker 1: on several. Ricky pearsoll you know when healthy's really good again.
[5:15] Speaker 1: Their receiving corps over the last three years, it's never healthy,
[5:19] Speaker 1: I mean, just ever.
[5:20] Speaker 2: No.
[5:22] Speaker 1: But I mean, I'll give the Niners credit. Tampa is
[5:24] Speaker 1: a really good team, and they shouldn't with Mac Jones
[5:27] Speaker 1: be this close. And it was a very very close
[5:30] Speaker 1: game throughout. It was one of those games where I
[5:31] Speaker 1: felt like Tampa was the better team, just they were
[5:34] Speaker 1: healthier when Abuka went out, and I'm thinking, Jesus, they
[5:36] Speaker 1: don't have anybody to work with and it's seven and
[5:38] Speaker 1: a half yards of play, So I think, and I
[5:40] Speaker 1: also think. You know, Baker will say I'm the same
[5:43] Speaker 1: guy I've always been, But all of us are human,
[5:45] Speaker 1: all of us learn from you know. He was pissed
[5:47] Speaker 1: when Cleveland got rid of him. He didn't like the
[5:50] Speaker 1: way I mean, not just Cleveland, but Carolina right like
[5:56] Speaker 1: like yeah, I mean, and then I mean La had staff,
[6:01] Speaker 1: but I mean you start looking around, it's it's he
[6:05] Speaker 1: got kicked to the curb multiple times, like Mac Jones similarly,
[6:08] Speaker 1: but I think we all know Baker's got more talent
[6:10] Speaker 1: than Mac. But it's it's one of those things where
[6:13] Speaker 1: you know it's it's it's when you you know, lost
[6:16] Speaker 1: your radio job. You're not a bitter person, but that stuff.
[6:20] Speaker 1: I mean, the Dallas Carolina game today, what were what
[6:25] Speaker 1: were they calling that game? That was the Rico Doubtel
[6:28] Speaker 1: revenge game. He was a monster. I think professional athletes
[6:32] Speaker 1: are like attorneys or in any profession that deals in conflict.
[6:40] Speaker 1: That shit is jet fuel for Baker. I don't think
[6:42] Speaker 1: there's any question that's helped.
[6:44] Speaker 2: And I'm totally with you. Like his comments. You know,
[6:46] Speaker 2: they used to call me cocky, abrasive, and now they
[6:48] Speaker 2: say moxie and dog. Well, Baker, you you're one you're
[6:51] Speaker 2: a way better player now, and two you definitely feel
[6:55] Speaker 2: a little more common. Also, you're out of a chaotic situation.
[6:58] Speaker 2: Like there are a lot of different factors. But I'm
[7:00] Speaker 2: with you. I mean, I think any human worth their
[7:02] Speaker 2: salt uses motivation, and as you mature, you don't let
[7:06] Speaker 2: it show as much. And I think that's a good
[7:07] Speaker 2: example with Baker. He was cut from if I remember correctly,
[7:11] Speaker 2: in the middle of the season after he was benched
[7:13] Speaker 2: by the Panthers. That's how he ended up on the
[7:15] Speaker 2: Rams on that Thursday night game. So I just think
[7:18] Speaker 2: that one Baker's always had the arm strength, and when
[7:22] Speaker 2: you watched him at Oklahoma, he was not a one
[7:24] Speaker 2: year wonder, three years dominated and by the time he left,
[7:28] Speaker 2: they were going toe to toe. Remember with the Georgia
[7:30] Speaker 2: team in the Rose Bowl. They easily could have won
[7:32] Speaker 2: that game. I thought he was an elite prospect. I
[7:35] Speaker 2: thought he was like a more mobile Drew Brees. But
[7:38] Speaker 2: you know, part of the reason Dorsey liked him was
[7:40] Speaker 2: like the Bravado, the kind of the Farvan. I don't know,
[7:45] Speaker 2: it's not fake confidence, but just belief of like I'm
[7:48] Speaker 2: just gonna pull this out even though sometimes you won't.
[7:51] Speaker 2: And it shows much better when you're playing well. And
[7:55] Speaker 2: you know, in Cleveland, I mean it's pretty clear no
[7:57] Speaker 2: one overcomes that that place. You see the list of
[8:00] Speaker 2: paying like nine quarterbacks right now, Like that's just I
[8:02] Speaker 2: know they got two IVY League guys running it, but
[8:04] Speaker 2: they are the joke of the league in terms of
[8:07] Speaker 2: these two IVY League guys to constantly lose. They can't
[8:10] Speaker 2: find a quarterback, like I'm watching Kyle and Robert Solad.
[8:12] Speaker 2: Would nobody compete?
[8:14] Speaker 1: Well, I mean, you and I were talking about this
[8:16] Speaker 1: before we went on. Russell Wilson gets coordinators fired. Baker
[8:21] Speaker 1: Mayfield has gotten back to back coordinators head jobs. Like
[8:25] Speaker 1: he is. He is a guy that you could you
[8:28] Speaker 1: can pretty much. He's super smart. I've been told that
[8:30] Speaker 1: the white bar board. He's brilliant. You can pretty much
[8:34] Speaker 1: Baker will have that playbook down at about six practices,
[8:37] Speaker 1: and you can, you can, you know, like Andrew Luck,
[8:40] Speaker 1: you can give him any play I mean he could
[8:42] Speaker 1: walk in. Joe Flacco did it today. You know he
[8:44] Speaker 1: was throwing a lot to Jamar Chase. But you give
[8:46] Speaker 1: Joe Flacco two practices and it's like, yeah, he was
[8:49] Speaker 1: better than anybody else. You know, Cincinnati could throw out there.
[8:52] Speaker 1: He was good enough made the game competitive. So I think, uh,
[8:56] Speaker 1: I think Baker would be my MVP right now. And
[8:59] Speaker 1: Chris Got's been hurt a lot, Mike Evans has been
[9:02] Speaker 1: dinged up a lot. But when Abuka got hurt, Bucky
[9:04] Speaker 1: Irving's out, it was a pretty stuttar performance. Now, it
[9:09] Speaker 1: was because of these double headers on Monday, which I
[9:13] Speaker 1: can't stand in the NFL. They mostly do everything right.
[9:16] Speaker 1: I didn't even love the European Games five or six
[9:18] Speaker 1: years ago. Now I look forward to him. I love
[9:19] Speaker 1: getting up in the morning and watch a European game.
[9:21] Speaker 1: I really do. That was this week's Sunday Night Football,
[9:26] Speaker 1: brought to you by Uber Eats. When football makes you hungry,
[9:28] Speaker 1: get game day deals on uber eats. I do every week,
[9:31] Speaker 1: the official on demand delivery partner of the NFL. Order
[9:34] Speaker 1: now I just did. But I want to talk about
[9:37] Speaker 1: this because I think the New York Jets maybe the
[9:40] Speaker 1: worst coach team I've ever seen. First of all, the
[9:43] Speaker 1: organization is so bad. Aaron Rodgers with the Steelers looks
[9:46] Speaker 1: good and competent and under control. With the Jets, he
[9:49] Speaker 1: looked old and it was chaotic. He's the same guy,
[9:53] Speaker 1: so just and by the way, Pittsburgh over the last
[9:56] Speaker 1: eight years can't get offense right. But Aaron goes from
[9:59] Speaker 1: the Jets to Pittsburgh and offensively at times tone deaf
[10:02] Speaker 1: organization and he looks really really good. But I want
[10:05] Speaker 1: to talk about the Jets. So Denver beats the Jets
[10:08] Speaker 1: thirteen to eleven, and Denver played like crap bo Nicks
[10:11] Speaker 1: was awful in the second half. But you know what,
[10:13] Speaker 1: Kansas City made a living last year out of playing
[10:17] Speaker 1: poorly in winning. There is value in going overseas, playing
[10:21] Speaker 1: poorly and winning thirteen to eleven. I mean, they had
[10:24] Speaker 1: a safety in the end zone, there's a holding. I mean,
[10:27] Speaker 1: Denver did everything wrong and it's why the NFL is
[10:31] Speaker 1: so popular. Denver was so much better than the Jets
[10:34] Speaker 1: and won thirteen to eleven. But at the end of
[10:38] Speaker 1: the first half, the Jets, Aaron Glenn calls for a
[10:42] Speaker 1: fake punt, they converted and the next play he runs
[10:46] Speaker 1: the ball. Well, why would you take that risk? And
[10:50] Speaker 1: then not going to your two minute offense. I've never
[10:52] Speaker 1: seen anything like it. Kurt Warner was incredulous. He and
[10:56] Speaker 1: Eisen just were like laughing. And then at the end
[10:59] Speaker 1: of the game when Justin Fields was atrocious and one
[11:03] Speaker 1: thing we know, Justin Fields does not see the field. Well,
[11:06] Speaker 1: they have him going on deep drops when they can
[11:09] Speaker 1: kick a sixty two yard field goal or go to
[11:12] Speaker 1: Tyrod Taylor in the second half, at some point, Tyrod's
[11:15] Speaker 1: not pro. They don't go to Tyrod Taylor. They don't
[11:19] Speaker 1: like to kick the field goal. And in that last drive.
[11:21] Speaker 1: It's deep drops. By listen, you need like eight yards
[11:25] Speaker 1: to get into field goal range. If you have to run,
[11:28] Speaker 1: do whatever you have to do. But quick drops, tight end,
[11:32] Speaker 1: you know, a quick drag route anything. I think the
[11:36] Speaker 1: Jets are the worst coach team in the league, and
[11:38] Speaker 1: I feel bad, but there are coaches Rich Koti, You're
[11:41] Speaker 1: just overwhelmed, Freddie Kitchens. It's just too big of an assignment.
[11:48] Speaker 1: My interpretation is the Jets can't do anything right. They
[11:53] Speaker 1: are officially the worst franchise in the league. And I'm
[11:56] Speaker 1: including Tennessee.
[11:57] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I would also include the GM. To me,
[12:00] Speaker 2: it's a tandem deal. They give Sauce all that money.
[12:03] Speaker 2: They kind of invest in the team. Justin fields. To
[12:05] Speaker 2: get forty million dollars over two years based on his
[12:08] Speaker 2: resume was insanity. I mean, some of these get the
[12:12] Speaker 2: forty nine ers got mac Jones for two years seven
[12:14] Speaker 2: million dollars. At no point in time during their career.
[12:17] Speaker 2: Mac Jones dealt with Belichick and not like the d
[12:20] Speaker 2: the prime Belichick, the Belichick we see now why it's honestly,
[12:23] Speaker 2: it's kind of a reflection off. Like, actually, Ma's pretty
[12:25] Speaker 2: impressive that he was able to overcome kind of that
[12:28] Speaker 2: mess justin fields can't play within the pocket. He has
[12:31] Speaker 2: no feel. Now the Jets offensive line is also regressing.
[12:35] Speaker 2: They were getting beaten all game long, so you factor
[12:39] Speaker 2: in their offensive tackles couldn't block the edges. He has
[12:43] Speaker 2: no feel for the pocket. I mean, they could have
[12:45] Speaker 2: had fifty sacks a day. It felt like he was
[12:46] Speaker 2: gonna get sacked on every drop back. I'm with you
[12:49] Speaker 2: calling these long dropbacks. But he gets back to investing
[12:52] Speaker 2: in him in the first place. That's that's insanity. If anything,
[12:56] Speaker 2: just take a deep breath, you know, higher sign same
[13:00] Speaker 2: thing a Gardner minshew, just take it. But to give
[13:03] Speaker 2: him two years and thirty million dollars guaranteed based on
[13:06] Speaker 2: what he got bench the previous year, which we could
[13:09] Speaker 2: argue if he should have or not, but even before that,
[13:12] Speaker 2: like that, that was insane. I mean, they are this
[13:15] Speaker 2: franchise they feel a little, you know, kind of like
[13:19] Speaker 2: the Raiders five, six, seven years ago. I mean, really
[13:22] Speaker 2: really rudderless. And the problem is their owner has unlimited money.
[13:27] Speaker 2: They have a high priced team. It's not like they
[13:29] Speaker 2: have some young and they're paying Garrett Wilson a lot.
[13:31] Speaker 2: Their pays Lost Gardener a lot. They're paying Queen Williams
[13:33] Speaker 2: a lot. That They've invested a lot of first run
[13:35] Speaker 2: picks in different guys and high picks they've invested. It's
[13:38] Speaker 2: not like their quarterbacks cheap, you know. I mean they
[13:42] Speaker 2: they are, They're a disaster. They the Broncos got really
[13:45] Speaker 2: lucky because bo Nicks. Now, listen, I do agree with you.
[13:49] Speaker 2: It's hard to go overseas in general. The Broncos played
[13:52] Speaker 2: the Eagles last week and they took all their stuff
[13:55] Speaker 2: with them and then flew to London right after, so
[13:57] Speaker 2: they've been gone forever. But three completions in the second
[14:00] Speaker 2: half for you know, a first round pick, a bunch
[14:03] Speaker 2: of you know, good wide receivers and a high level
[14:06] Speaker 2: offensive coordinator, and even bow Nick said after the game,
[14:08] Speaker 2: like we got no rhythm. They got very lucky. They're
[14:12] Speaker 2: they're playing in a NEP team because they lose that game.
[14:15] Speaker 2: If they're just playing like the Saints.
[14:17] Speaker 1: Well, I was thinking about this. If we go back
[14:19] Speaker 1: to the twenty twenty four quarterback draft class, Jaden Daniels
[14:25] Speaker 1: number one, Drake May has emerged as number two.
[14:29] Speaker 2: He looks good.
[14:29] Speaker 1: Bow Knicks today is three Caleb's on his heels at four.
[14:35] Speaker 1: I won't even count J. J. McCarthy Penix is five.
[14:38] Speaker 1: I still think Pennis has a chance to work, but
[14:41] Speaker 1: I think Bow knicks. He's had some really bad halfs.
[14:46] Speaker 1: Not Philadelphia Eagles bad halfs, but pretty bad halfs. And
[14:49] Speaker 1: I'll say this between Mims and Franklin and Harvey and
[14:54] Speaker 1: Evan Ingram had a big catch on a fourth down,
[14:59] Speaker 1: Denver's got really nice personnel. I'll argue this all day long.
[15:02] Speaker 1: I think it's a top I think the Broncos have
[15:04] Speaker 1: a top five roster bulls at left tackle. They have
[15:07] Speaker 1: real players, so I think it's I mean, Bow's nineteen
[15:11] Speaker 1: to thirty, one hundred and seventy five yards a touchdown,
[15:14] Speaker 1: no picks, runs very very well, but he missed a
[15:16] Speaker 1: couple of deep balls. He does not throw the deep
[15:19] Speaker 1: ball particularly well. He's got an arm, but it feels
[15:23] Speaker 1: like to me on the deep ball, he has no
[15:26] Speaker 1: touch on the deep ball. He just lets it go.
[15:28] Speaker 1: And maybe because he didn't throw a ton of them.
[15:31] Speaker 1: He's a pretty good intermediate thrower. He's exceptional under eight
[15:34] Speaker 1: to ten yards. He's very accurate. He just doesn't throw
[15:37] Speaker 1: a good deep ball, and Sean Payton has receivers who
[15:40] Speaker 1: can get open deep, so I think it's a I
[15:42] Speaker 1: think Sean Payton privately is frustrated.
[15:45] Speaker 2: How could he not be. I also think he's kind
[15:46] Speaker 2: of caught because he should use his legs more. Yeah,
[15:50] Speaker 2: but Sean Payton, for the most part, I mean, became
[15:52] Speaker 2: a superstar with a quarterback that never scrambled. So I
[15:55] Speaker 2: mean part of this offense timing, get rid of the ball.
[15:58] Speaker 2: But there are plays where it's like the guy's open boat.
[16:00] Speaker 2: Take off. You're a really good athlete and that The commentators,
[16:04] Speaker 2: I would say, over the course of this season have
[16:05] Speaker 2: been saying that he's very I would say, hesitant to
[16:09] Speaker 2: run on spots. We don't need you running all the time,
[16:12] Speaker 2: but just take off. He always wants to throw, and
[16:15] Speaker 2: it's just hurting him. He's scrambling like backwards into the
[16:18] Speaker 2: side to keep plays alive with his arm, and from
[16:21] Speaker 2: a throwing standpoint, it's just not really working out now
[16:23] Speaker 2: that their defense, like you said, their team, the roster's fantastic,
[16:27] Speaker 2: their defense, and they're a locklayoff team. They don't agree
[16:30] Speaker 2: all yet Whufunga might have saved the game with that pass.
[16:33] Speaker 2: Breakup on the second to last pass by fields. They're
[16:36] Speaker 2: going to be a playoff, a lock playoff team. They
[16:38] Speaker 2: have one of the easiest schedules left. Uh that they
[16:41] Speaker 2: are gonna win. I honestly, they should win the division,
[16:45] Speaker 2: especially based with the Chargers injuries and you know we're
[16:47] Speaker 2: recording this before the Chiefs game. But they got no
[16:50] Speaker 2: chance to make a real run the playoffs. Their quarterback
[16:52] Speaker 2: doesn't play better. Like that's college football in the NFL.
[16:54] Speaker 2: Once you get the best opponents playing the best opponents,
[16:57] Speaker 2: your quarterback has to play well. If he doesn't, you'll
[17:00] Speaker 2: John matteerbad Bo Nicks. That's where they got very lucky.
[17:03] Speaker 2: To me, they lose this game. I think if they're
[17:05] Speaker 2: playing like thirty other NFL teams, it just got like
[17:09] Speaker 2: you said, the worst coached. Just the worst team in
[17:13] Speaker 2: the league, whose offense is who's atrocious?
[17:17] Speaker 1: Yeah, and I mean justin fields isn't good. But I
[17:19] Speaker 1: said this when he went to the Jets. He went
[17:21] Speaker 1: from the Bears defensive coach, Steelers defensive coach, Jets defensive coach.

[18:57] Speaker 1: New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia. Pittsburgh beats the Browns twenty
[19:05] Speaker 1: three to nine. I went four and over my picks.
[19:07] Speaker 1: It's the one everybody said you got to take that game.
[19:09] Speaker 1: I just don't like division rivals and big spreads. But
[19:13] Speaker 1: you know, let me defend Aaron Rodgers again. So far
[19:18] Speaker 1: this season, nine touchdowns, two picks, sixty nine percent completion percentage,
[19:23] Speaker 1: one zero four passer rating. He made a couple of
[19:26] Speaker 1: throws today that were so Aaron running right, throwing back left.
[19:29] Speaker 1: He can get away with it. A throw in the
[19:30] Speaker 1: end zone to I think Connor Hayward Aaron has like
[19:35] Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield. In a way, it helps that Aaron doesn't
[19:40] Speaker 1: have as much horsepower John, because what Pittsburgh does have
[19:43] Speaker 1: between you know, they have size, They're you know Washington.
[19:47] Speaker 1: They have big receivers, they have size, they have big
[19:50] Speaker 1: targets and with catching radiuses and I think Aaron, they're
[19:56] Speaker 1: a team that can do a lot of damage inside
[19:58] Speaker 1: of fifteen yards and they all have guys that can
[20:00] Speaker 1: break tackles. And I think Aaron's smart enough to see
[20:03] Speaker 1: that like today was classic twenty one to thirty, most
[20:06] Speaker 1: of it underneath a couple of back shoulder throws, one
[20:09] Speaker 1: great throw in the end zone. I think Aaron, I
[20:12] Speaker 1: mean average five point eight yards of play that for
[20:15] Speaker 1: Pittsburgh over the last seven years against an excellent defense
[20:20] Speaker 1: in a division game. That's a lot. You know, these Steelers,
[20:25] Speaker 1: Browns Raven Steelers games, you averaged three and a half
[20:28] Speaker 1: four and a half yards of play. I don't want
[20:32] Speaker 1: to buy into Pittsburgh, but it's it's hard not to
[20:37] Speaker 1: because I do think Aaron's intelligence and experience has sort
[20:41] Speaker 1: of synthesized all these talented parts. They just felt like
[20:46] Speaker 1: players the last six years now, they feel like a
[20:49] Speaker 1: real offense with a rhythm.
[20:50] Speaker 2: To me, Yeah, he definitely, I mean feels a good
[20:53] Speaker 2: cohesion with dk Metcalf has a touchdown in the last
[20:56] Speaker 2: four games. Yeah, he's very comfortable throwing that go route
[21:00] Speaker 2: them or just the you know, the kind of the
[21:01] Speaker 2: over the shoulder ball in the end zone. They have,
[21:04] Speaker 2: like you said, enormous tight ends. I mean Cam Hayward's
[21:07] Speaker 2: brothers big. The kid from Georgia is massive. He's like
[21:10] Speaker 2: an offensive tackle that can run. You know. Friarmuth is
[21:13] Speaker 2: just a high level tight end. So they got big
[21:16] Speaker 2: tight ends. Yeah, I mean the question mark is the
[21:18] Speaker 2: running game will gain well now is kind of a
[21:20] Speaker 2: merged like they feel more comfortable using him. I mean,
[21:23] Speaker 2: Caleb Johnson they clearly don't really love, but have no choice.
[21:26] Speaker 2: Warren was running guys over. The Cleveland Browns defense is
[21:30] Speaker 2: pretty high level. Like it's if they had a good offense,
[21:33] Speaker 2: they would be one of the best teams in the league.
[21:34] Speaker 2: That their defense is awesome. And as that game went,
[21:37] Speaker 2: and this is part of football, right, you just kind
[21:39] Speaker 2: of get worn out when you're a good defense in
[21:41] Speaker 2: your offense stinks. And that's the case with Cleveland, but
[21:43] Speaker 2: like the Steelers, you know, early on they're getting hit
[21:46] Speaker 2: with hay Makers, is like, we'll just we'll stick this out,
[21:48] Speaker 2: and Rogers made a lot of throws. He doesn't move.
[21:51] Speaker 2: I mean, it's pretty clear like he once did, but
[21:53] Speaker 2: he knows it and like you said, he actually is
[21:56] Speaker 2: more comfortable with his limitations and plays within himself. He's not,
[22:00] Speaker 2: you know, last year. It's like any player, any human being.
[22:03] Speaker 2: As you age, you kind of have to change. I mean,
[22:05] Speaker 2: I'm going through it right now with like my Metabolism'm like, God,
[22:07] Speaker 2: my metabolism at forty's not the same as it was
[22:09] Speaker 2: at thirty five. Welcome to life. You know, it's like
[22:12] Speaker 2: you're forty one. Aaron you Torrio's achilles a couple of
[22:14] Speaker 2: years ago. You can't scramble, So he moves a couple
[22:17] Speaker 2: of yards where he used to take off lateral to
[22:20] Speaker 2: the line of scrimmage. He'll just kind of keep a
[22:22] Speaker 2: play alive. But he's not looking for you know, he
[22:25] Speaker 2: used to have the He's like one of the great
[22:27] Speaker 2: hero ball players of all time because he could make
[22:29] Speaker 2: something out of nothing into one of the most fictacking
[22:31] Speaker 2: Those days are done. But I think he kind of
[22:33] Speaker 2: understands himself. And the other thing is their defense is
[22:36] Speaker 2: starting to come on. Now. Cleveland's offensive line is pretty terrible,
[22:39] Speaker 2: but as they get healthier up front, their defensive line,
[22:44] Speaker 2: I mean they had backup that hair of guy's making plays. Obviously, TJ.
[22:47] Speaker 2: Wats looked excellent the last three or four games. They
[22:50] Speaker 2: are physic. They were hitting hard today on defense. Well,
[22:53] Speaker 2: early on, I was pretty nervous. I'm like, they got
[22:55] Speaker 2: no chance. Here's the other thing, colin the AFC North,
[22:58] Speaker 2: I mean that there's a chance all the other three
[23:00] Speaker 2: coaches get fired. That's how bad it's going. Stefanski's in
[23:03] Speaker 2: major troubles, Zach Taylor's done, and hardball, that thing's gonna
[23:06] Speaker 2: get louder and louder they are going. They could have
[23:08] Speaker 2: the division wrapped up by like early December, and they
[23:12] Speaker 2: could be like an eleven win team and win this
[23:13] Speaker 2: elevation by four games.
[23:15] Speaker 1: Listen, their schedule gets tougher late. But here's the thing.
[23:19] Speaker 1: When you when you start watching players like Aaron Rodgers,
[23:25] Speaker 1: I mean, Russell Wilson had some decent moments in Pittsburgh.
[23:29] Speaker 1: I mean the Giants couldn't sit him fast enough. I mean,
[23:32] Speaker 1: Brian Dabeles running to the tent to find Jackson dark.
[23:35] Speaker 1: Justin Fields was four and two with the Steelers. He's
[23:38] Speaker 1: the worst quarterback in the league right now with the Jets. Like,
[23:42] Speaker 1: here's the thing about Pittsburgh. They're not clever offensively, they're
[23:45] Speaker 1: not San Francisco. They're not McVeigh. Although the Rams are struggling.
[23:51] Speaker 1: But you know what, they're so functional as an organization
[23:54] Speaker 1: in terms of drafting and developing. You and I have
[23:56] Speaker 1: said this for years. They're gonna win nine games because
[23:59] Speaker 1: they just they it's a well run operation. Tomlin can
[24:02] Speaker 1: drive me crazy. They don't get offense. But then when
[24:05] Speaker 1: you put a smart guy like Aaron In and Arthur
[24:08] Speaker 1: Smith is also bright, it's just good enough. Now, it
[24:12] Speaker 1: wasn't against Seattle, and they played poorly in the second
[24:14] Speaker 1: half against Seattle. They had that goofy special teams blunder.
[24:18] Speaker 1: But you start watching the I guess it's this John.
[24:20] Speaker 1: You said this three weeks ago. The bottom of this
[24:23] Speaker 1: league is awful. Tennessee is awful. I'm talking. I mean,
[24:30] Speaker 1: the Saints are, They're fighting their butt off. New Orleans
[24:33] Speaker 1: is fighting hard. That's a bad team. The Jets are
[24:36] Speaker 1: absolutely awful. There are four or five teams at the bottom,
[24:41] Speaker 1: and there's no great teams in this league. But you
[24:45] Speaker 1: watch Pittsburgh and just on health, Aaron certain uni unity
[24:53] Speaker 1: within the organization. They're gonna win like nine or ten game.
[24:56] Speaker 1: I don't think they're gonna go thirteen fourteen wins. I don't,
[25:00] Speaker 1: you know, by the way, they do have some older players.
[25:02] Speaker 1: Older players tend to get hurt around Thanksgiving. Yeah it,
[25:05] Speaker 1: but I think Pittsburgh is going to be a playoff
[25:07] Speaker 1: team again if they'll probably be a one and donner.
[25:11] Speaker 1: But I think they'll be a playoff team.
[25:13] Speaker 2: Well, obviously last year their defense fall off of Cliff,
[25:15] Speaker 2: but also you know the quarterback play with Russell once
[25:18] Speaker 2: it got really cold, he looked really really bad. Old
[25:21] Speaker 2: players and Aaron's obviously a lot older than Russell. You go, well,
[25:24] Speaker 2: I'm looking at their schedule now, starting in about mid November.
[25:28] Speaker 2: They got home game against the Bengals. Could be cold
[25:31] Speaker 2: in Pittsburgh at the Bears, eleven twenty three bills at
[25:34] Speaker 2: home at the Ravens at the Browns, you know versus
[25:39] Speaker 2: the Ravens. I mean, these are a lot of games
[25:40] Speaker 2: that could be snowing. Could be twenty degrees. And like
[25:44] Speaker 2: you said, the bottom of the league is really crappy. Well,
[25:47] Speaker 2: they're going to have teams in their division that aren't
[25:49] Speaker 2: going to win that many games. But the Browns are
[25:51] Speaker 2: not like one of those awful teams that's easy to play.
[25:54] Speaker 2: I would say the same about the Bengals, right because
[25:56] Speaker 2: at any moment, they just got some good players. You know,
[25:59] Speaker 2: Hendrickson got hurt and who knows, I guess he could
[26:01] Speaker 2: get traded. But if the Bengals and the Browns are
[26:04] Speaker 2: the worst two teams in your division, both teams probably
[26:06] Speaker 2: gonna win a combined like ten games. They are just
[26:09] Speaker 2: not an that you're not playing the Jets, right, that's
[26:11] Speaker 2: just hard, especially the Browns. That is physically taxing. And
[26:14] Speaker 2: they played the Ravens twice in the last like you know,
[26:17] Speaker 2: month and a half. They could be a little healthier
[26:19] Speaker 2: by then. It's not gonna be east Side to day.
[26:21] Speaker 2: I mean, the Ravens have a lot of pride. A
[26:23] Speaker 2: is an organization, even if they're playing random guys. They
[26:27] Speaker 2: I thought the whole time, like everyone thinks the Rams
[26:29] Speaker 2: are gonna kill these guys. No, they'll probably win, But
[26:32] Speaker 2: this is they're gonna have They're gonna have some like
[26:35] Speaker 2: dignity as an organization here that even if we're gonna
[26:39] Speaker 2: win four games, we're gonna do it with their head
[26:40] Speaker 2: held high. This is a pretty prideful division. Tomlin. I
[26:44] Speaker 2: forget who was calling the game, but they basically said
[26:46] Speaker 2: Mike Tomlin tried to tell his rookies don't get fooled
[26:49] Speaker 2: by the records in this division. These inner division games,
[26:52] Speaker 2: these six of them are worse so. And the more
[26:55] Speaker 2: an Aaron plays in these, especially against the Ravens, like
[26:58] Speaker 2: they're gonna hit them, they'll find a way. And it's
[27:00] Speaker 2: just can he maintain because if he's healthy, I will
[27:03] Speaker 2: say this, they do have a chance to like compete
[27:06] Speaker 2: in a playoff game. I think the AFC is pretty
[27:08] Speaker 2: wide open. You got bo Knicks camp three completions, The
[27:11] Speaker 2: Chargers have a bunch of injuries. You know, the Jags
[27:15] Speaker 2: still got Trevor Lawrence as their quarterback. I think you
[27:18] Speaker 2: saw the Colts today. I mean they're not a perfect
[27:20] Speaker 2: team by any means. There're gonna be some playoff teams
[27:22] Speaker 2: in the AFC that aren't exactly two years ago. Raven
[27:25] Speaker 2: Some of these Bills teams in the past and some
[27:27] Speaker 2: of the prime Chiefs teams. So it's saying they're going
[27:31] Speaker 2: to be in the AFC Championship Game. But it's definitely
[27:33] Speaker 2: more wide open than I think we imagine when the
[27:35] Speaker 2: season started.
[27:36] Speaker 1: And now for our next segment, Whiskey Business. Yes, Whiskey Business,
[27:40] Speaker 1: brought to you by Green River Whiskey, the official whiskey
[27:42] Speaker 1: of the Colin Coward Podcast. All right, I want to
[27:45] Speaker 1: talk Chargers who end a two game losing streak. Chargers
[27:48] Speaker 1: twenty nine, Dolphins twenty seven. So there was Listen, the
[27:54] Speaker 1: Miami Dolphins could have drafted Herbert and they drafted Tua.
[27:57] Speaker 1: So I was a bigger fan than Herbert out of
[27:59] Speaker 1: college than but not a lot of gms. There were
[28:02] Speaker 1: a lot of gms that like Tua. Chris Greer, who
[28:04] Speaker 1: I has been a GM for ten years, and not
[28:07] Speaker 1: a lot of Pro Bowlers. I mean they've they've battle
[28:10] Speaker 1: line gave Tua an extension. It wouldn't have been my call,
[28:14] Speaker 1: but Tua had three picks today and Herbert put on
[28:17] Speaker 1: a show twenty nine to thirty eight. No Quinton Johnson,
[28:21] Speaker 1: four backups on the offensive line. There was a play
[28:25] Speaker 1: at the end of the game it's unbelievable. Herbert is
[28:30] Speaker 1: just getting attacked. I mean, he's he leads the NFL
[28:32] Speaker 1: and getting hit since I think since he was drafted.
[28:36] Speaker 1: I think he's I think he's been hit more than
[28:38] Speaker 1: any quarterback in the league. So he's got backups everywhere.
[28:42] Speaker 1: No Quinton Johnson, it's Lad McConkie and a number three
[28:45] Speaker 1: running back and some backups, four backs on the offensive line.
[28:50] Speaker 1: So as they trail late, the Dolphins score here, they
[28:53] Speaker 1: come back. It looked like the Dolphins were going to win.
[28:55] Speaker 1: Herbert breaks a tackle from a defensive lineman, and this
[28:59] Speaker 1: is why traits you're a former NFL scout, this is
[29:02] Speaker 1: why traits matter. Tua doesn't escape that, Rock Purty doesn't
[29:08] Speaker 1: escape that. It's just one of those things that smaller
[29:11] Speaker 1: quarterbacks Kyler Murray doesn't escape it. Herbert at six five
[29:15] Speaker 1: and a half two thirty five and strong bounces off
[29:18] Speaker 1: a defensive tackle, escapes somehow, moving to his left gets
[29:22] Speaker 1: Lad McConkie, who flies down the sideline. They ultimately win
[29:26] Speaker 1: it with a field goal. And in my takeaway in
[29:30] Speaker 1: that game is it highlights the Miami problem. When you
[29:34] Speaker 1: draft Tua, who's a smaller quarterback and not as athletic
[29:39] Speaker 1: as Herbert. I mean, and again Chris Career wasn't alone.
[29:43] Speaker 1: There were people that love Tua. Is I look at
[29:46] Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel, Tua set after the game, people are missing meetings,
[29:50] Speaker 1: people are late. It's like, holy crap, tuas calling out
[29:54] Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel. But I thought this was overall, this really
[30:00] Speaker 1: puts a ribbon on the Dolphins. When you watched Herbert Carrie,
[30:06] Speaker 1: only San Francisco's more banged up. When you watch Herbert
[30:10] Speaker 1: carry a completely depleted roster on the road from behind
[30:17] Speaker 1: to win over to who's home, who's comfortable, Who's got
[30:20] Speaker 1: most of his weapons? To me, it was like, this
[30:22] Speaker 1: is the definition of why the Dolphins of the Dolphins?
[30:26] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean, I thought the Herbert play was the
[30:28] Speaker 2: play of the day. I mean, given that the injuries,
[30:31] Speaker 2: that felt like they were going to lose the game,
[30:33] Speaker 2: you know, the defense kind of gave it up at
[30:35] Speaker 2: the end. I mean, Waller's wide open in the corner
[30:38] Speaker 2: of the end zone for two to throw them a
[30:39] Speaker 2: little lollipop, and then he breaks that tackle sack for
[30:43] Speaker 2: the throw and then mcakey, I mean, how good have
[30:45] Speaker 2: those two guys been since they've linked up. She's holy moly.
[30:48] Speaker 2: I mean mccakey is he's like a Wes Welker meets Edelman.
[30:53] Speaker 2: I mean he's a son. But Herbert there was you know,
[30:57] Speaker 2: I understand what tu was saying, and we've known about
[30:59] Speaker 2: the function in Miami now for a while. It's pretty embarrassing.
[31:03] Speaker 2: But I also think, like Tua, you threw a pick.
[31:05] Speaker 2: You guys are up sixteen to thirteen and threw a
[31:07] Speaker 2: pick over the middle of the field, and that pick
[31:10] Speaker 2: doesn't get thrown if you're justin Herbert because he has
[31:11] Speaker 2: a much stronger arm. Well, the ball, you know, when
[31:15] Speaker 2: you have a weaker arm, like Philip Rivers threw a
[31:17] Speaker 2: lot of picks, is great. It's an easier ball to catch.
[31:19] Speaker 2: So if his timing's a little off, you know, Peyton
[31:21] Speaker 2: Manning's ball, if he's a little late, is much more
[31:24] Speaker 2: pickable than Cam Newton throwing a hundred mile an hour fastball.
[31:28] Speaker 2: And you just watch Tua's ball kind of floats and
[31:31] Speaker 2: the charger defender was able to jump right in front
[31:34] Speaker 2: of the route the guy was open. But it's when
[31:36] Speaker 2: we talk about arm strength. Obviously, that doesn't determine if
[31:39] Speaker 2: you're gonna be a great player. Not Peyton had an
[31:41] Speaker 2: average arm at best. But Tua is nowhere near the
[31:44] Speaker 2: guys with average arms that were great players. And makes
[31:48] Speaker 2: mistakes constantly. And that was sixteen to thirteen, and then boom,
[31:51] Speaker 2: three plays later, the Chargers are up twenty three to thirteen.
[31:56] Speaker 2: And I just think that, you know, TWOA is a
[31:58] Speaker 2: pretty average player, which listened relatively league. He's still better
[32:02] Speaker 2: than a lot of guys, but he is not talented enough.
[32:05] Speaker 2: We talk about Baker Cleveland, can't overcome it, Mac Jones
[32:08] Speaker 2: with Belichick and that disaster the last couple years. Can't
[32:11] Speaker 2: overcome it. Tua, this Miami thing, no chance you put
[32:15] Speaker 2: Tua on. You just gave him to Kevin O'Connell right now.
[32:18] Speaker 2: I bet he'd look a lot better, right And you
[32:20] Speaker 2: know Kevin O'Connell said this over the offseason. Most teams
[32:24] Speaker 2: fail quarterbacks. We know Tua's very limited. We've know Jared
[32:28] Speaker 2: Goff's been limited since he was playing at col Can't move.
[32:30] Speaker 2: Guess what the Lions don't ask him to do. Move
[32:33] Speaker 2: Guess what they asked him to do. Get rid of
[32:34] Speaker 2: the ball fast. You know, I think sometimes Mike mcde
[32:37] Speaker 2: Mike McDaniels is asking two of like these deep dropbacks,
[32:40] Speaker 2: push the ball down the field, guys. He has an
[32:41] Speaker 2: average arm and part of it now he has to
[32:44] Speaker 2: carry the team. But they have all these little, tiny receivers.
[32:46] Speaker 2: Even when Tyreek was there. It's like, I don't know
[32:48] Speaker 2: if I would have built a team that way first off.
[32:51] Speaker 2: And now it's like Wadall's an excellent player and made
[32:53] Speaker 2: a yeah, an awesome catch today down the sideline, But
[32:56] Speaker 2: like I would try to get bigger body. Listen. I
[32:59] Speaker 2: don't know if it's gonna work in Caroline or not,
[33:01] Speaker 2: but I do understand the logic of we need to
[33:03] Speaker 2: get this big body guy for a little quarterback. McMillan
[33:07] Speaker 2: the wide receiver from Arizona. Why because its harder for
[33:10] Speaker 2: him to see he gives him a bitter catching radius
[33:12] Speaker 2: to a throw and do tiny little guys and he's
[33:14] Speaker 2: a tiny little quarterback. Well, yeah, Herbert can see the
[33:16] Speaker 2: tiny little receiver or Brady can see that they're six
[33:19] Speaker 2: foot five. It's the opposite with Tua. This is a
[33:22] Speaker 2: math equation. And then when you factor in his arms
[33:25] Speaker 2: week and I give him like I actually think too,
[33:28] Speaker 2: he's earned my respective like being mentally tough. You know,
[33:31] Speaker 2: he battles through like he doesn't tap out. I mean,
[33:33] Speaker 2: he still runs around when he's got a million concussions.
[33:36] Speaker 2: But the organization's embarrassment. I just think that the to
[33:41] Speaker 2: a thing. They it's it's more like he turns the
[33:44] Speaker 2: ball over a lot and he's got issues, but the
[33:46] Speaker 2: whole organization around him is just I mean, it's pretty
[33:49] Speaker 2: low level.
[33:50] Speaker 1: If you had two as a quarterback, you need a
[33:53] Speaker 1: good backup quarterback. They've never had that. And you need
[33:56] Speaker 1: a good offensive line. It's stunk since he's been there.
[34:00] Speaker 1: They've had good defensive fronts. They don't know what they're doing.
[34:04] Speaker 1: I think about this all the time when I started
[34:06] Speaker 1: the volume. When you start a company, you have to
[34:08] Speaker 1: have an identity. What are we? What aren't we? Let's
[34:11] Speaker 1: stop chasing this. We're not this.
[34:13] Speaker 2: We are this.
[34:14] Speaker 1: If two is your quarterback, you have to have a
[34:16] Speaker 1: good backup. You also have to have good protection, good
[34:19] Speaker 1: pass pro. They've never done a good job with that.
[34:22] Speaker 1: So there's two quarterbacks that won today, Baker Mayfield and
[34:26] Speaker 1: Justin Herbert, who had no business winning. Both are on
[34:29] Speaker 1: the road, both missing multiple starters, star players, Joe al
[34:35] Speaker 1: Rashaun Slater, Quinton Johnson or Bucky Irving, Chris Godwin, Mike Evans,
[34:40] Speaker 1: Abuka Baker Mayfield, and Justin Herbert. If you wondered what
[34:44] Speaker 1: the difference between the haves and the have not quarterbacks
[34:46] Speaker 1: in this league. Herbert and Baker on the road win
[34:51] Speaker 1: games with almost forty percent of their starters missing. And
[34:56] Speaker 1: I thought when you watched Herbert juxtapose with Tua today
[35:00] Speaker 1: to us throwing pick after pick and guys are bouncing
[35:02] Speaker 1: off Herbert, It's like, folks, that's that's a guy that
[35:07] Speaker 1: will never pull a team. Herbert and Baker are pulling.
[35:11] Speaker 1: They're they're not They're not trailers, they're tractors. They are
[35:15] Speaker 1: pulling offenses.
[35:17] Speaker 2: But Mike McDaniel said last year that players that the
[35:21] Speaker 2: fine system didn't work to team meetings right, He couldn't
[35:24] Speaker 2: get guys to show up on well to it. You
[35:26] Speaker 2: think people that they can't find you are going to
[35:28] Speaker 2: show up to players only meetings like that's the culture
[35:31] Speaker 2: has already been established. Nothing matters, right that the standard
[35:35] Speaker 2: doesn't exist. And this is what happens when you have
[35:39] Speaker 2: a guy that no one respects and you bring them
[35:42] Speaker 2: back and listen, that's not a shot at Mike. It's
[35:44] Speaker 2: just clearly the players do not view him like an
[35:47] Speaker 2: authority figure. And there you can be a nice guy, right.
[35:50] Speaker 2: Andy Reid is good friends and has close relationships with
[35:54] Speaker 2: his players. They also view him as an authority figure
[35:57] Speaker 2: of if he says something is at eight o'clock, there
[36:00] Speaker 2: is a level of respect to show up at seven
[36:02] Speaker 2: fifty five. No one's asking you to be Tom Coughlin
[36:04] Speaker 2: and be twenty minutes earlier, year late. But when a
[36:07] Speaker 2: coach says it's not even it's just basic business. Right,
[36:10] Speaker 2: everyone's there. We're making time. Our time is valuable. We've
[36:13] Speaker 2: never had less time with all these rules. Show up
[36:16] Speaker 2: and they weren't showing up to the team meetings last
[36:19] Speaker 2: year when they why do you think Vic Fangio was like,
[36:21] Speaker 2: I want out of this, yes, Fani shoke, get me
[36:24] Speaker 2: out of here. Yeah, Howie, throw me a lifeline. And
[36:29] Speaker 2: I think Stephen Ross like I don't even want to
[36:30] Speaker 2: deal with this. Go you know this is But that
[36:33] Speaker 2: was a reflection of Mike and the organization, and in
[36:37] Speaker 2: fairness to Mike, this has been going on even with
[36:39] Speaker 2: Flores that no one's ever on the same page in.
[36:42] Speaker 1: This let me throw this auty. I thought about this today.
[36:44] Speaker 1: Most of the great culture creators Vrabel, Mike Tomlin, Dan Campbell,
[36:51] Speaker 1: I would say Sean McVay feels bigger than he is.
[36:54] Speaker 2: He's I agree.
[36:56] Speaker 1: Is there's a physical component to them. You could say,
[37:00] Speaker 1: what about Belichick. Brady set the culture. Let's be honest
[37:03] Speaker 1: about it. Like Brady ran that locker room like players
[37:06] Speaker 1: were intimidated if Brady, I mean Brady l worked every player.
[37:09] Speaker 1: He was a legend, he was the goat. Brady set
[37:12] Speaker 1: that culture as much as Belichick. Mike McDaniel. I mean,
[37:16] Speaker 1: if you walked into Google, looks like some guy that
[37:18] Speaker 1: would be And I'm not trying to be mean spirited,
[37:21] Speaker 1: but you're walking up in front of six foot seven,
[37:24] Speaker 1: three hundred pound, three hundred twenty five pounds alphas. There
[37:27] Speaker 1: is some you cannot discredit the value. Have you ever
[37:32] Speaker 1: stood next to Dan Campbell or Mike Vrabel? These are
[37:35] Speaker 1: huge men, And Mike Tomlin's an intimidating man. So you
[37:41] Speaker 1: either have to be intimidating in terms of volume or intensity.
[37:44] Speaker 1: Sean Payton's intimidating, like like when you're around him. Shawn's
[37:48] Speaker 1: expertise and his intelligence, Andy Reid success volume, like Andy's
[37:55] Speaker 1: a he's a yeller, or there's the physical component. I
[37:59] Speaker 1: said this when he first got hired. He didn't look
[38:01] Speaker 1: like a guy that was gonna walk up in front
[38:02] Speaker 1: of a room and command respect from a bunch of
[38:06] Speaker 1: fifty five guys that average six four two twenty.
[38:10] Speaker 2: No one thinks that, especially if you go back to like,
[38:13] Speaker 2: you know, I was watching early this morning and they
[38:16] Speaker 2: are doing something on Brian Schottenhammer, and they were talking
[38:18] Speaker 2: a lot about Marty you know, or Bill Parcells or
[38:20] Speaker 2: some of those guys, Jimmy Johnson. Obviously, these guys, if
[38:24] Speaker 2: they got into a physical altercation with the player, are
[38:26] Speaker 2: going to lose. But I bet if you asked a
[38:28] Speaker 2: lot of those players, they'd say, I never knew when
[38:31] Speaker 2: the guy might actually snap on me. And again I
[38:33] Speaker 2: knew I could beat the guy up, but like he
[38:35] Speaker 2: had an im atimidation factor. You go what back you
[38:38] Speaker 2: watch some of those cowboy practices. You know, Jimmy's fifty
[38:41] Speaker 2: years old screaming at Charles Haley. You know I grew
[38:43] Speaker 2: up on you know, Bill Walsher retired, George Seffert, he
[38:46] Speaker 2: was terrifying. I was like, this guy is just no
[38:48] Speaker 2: one messed with him, and I think there's an element
[38:51] Speaker 2: of that. Obviously, Mike McDaniel is never gonna have to
[38:53] Speaker 2: fight any of these guys, but they look at him like,
[38:56] Speaker 2: in what world would you wouldn't take that guy seriously
[38:59] Speaker 2: if he was your friends and he got mad at
[39:01] Speaker 2: you over at his house playing video games, if you
[39:02] Speaker 2: were a fifteen year old kid.
[39:04] Speaker 1: I mean, let's be honest, there is.
[39:08] Speaker 2: If it's football not softball. I mean, it's part of
[39:10] Speaker 2: the deal.
[39:11] Speaker 1: It's just like saying, you know, taller people make more
[39:14] Speaker 1: money according to every study. If you're saying the physical
[39:18] Speaker 1: component in life doesn't matter, is laughable. If you're saying
[39:21] Speaker 1: it does it, you're probably five to five. It does. Taller,
[39:24] Speaker 1: better looking people, more intimidating people. I mean, there's just
[39:27] Speaker 1: something that John Taffer bar rescue well, he's like six
[39:30] Speaker 1: five and screams. It's intimidating for bar owners, right, Gordon
[39:34] Speaker 1: ramsay in the kitchen, it's intimidating. He's smart and he's loud,
[39:38] Speaker 1: and he's successful. It matters when you want to enjoy
[39:42] Speaker 1: life's simpler pleasures. Reach for Green River whiskey, whether a
[39:47] Speaker 1: dry whiskey or single barrel bourbon, you're getting over a
[39:51] Speaker 1: century of craftsmanship packed into every bottle. Hop on over
[39:54] Speaker 1: to Green River Whisky dot com and discover a legend
[39:58] Speaker 1: in a bottle today. Okay, I want to talk a
[40:06] Speaker 1: couple more games here before we get into James Franklin,
[40:08] Speaker 1: who got fired at Penn State. Carolina beats Dallas thirty
[40:12] Speaker 1: to twenty seven. Two things to say about Dallas. First
[40:16] Speaker 1: of all, Dak Presscott in his last three games has
[40:18] Speaker 1: ten touchdowns and no picks. They can only win one
[40:21] Speaker 1: day way, it's a track meet. They got their defense.
[40:24] Speaker 1: Bryce Young ate it up. Secondly, George Pickens, for all
[40:28] Speaker 1: the criticism of the Cowboys get I mean, he's got
[40:31] Speaker 1: six touchdowns in five games. He has been a steel
[40:34] Speaker 1: as a third rounder, he has been unbelievable. Today he
[40:37] Speaker 1: was incredible. So we can roll our eyes at the Cowboys.
[40:41] Speaker 1: But Pickens has been great. Dak has been sensational. But
[40:44] Speaker 1: I was watching Bryce Young today, John and it really
[40:46] Speaker 1: came to me is that Carolina dominated first downs like
[40:50] Speaker 1: almost double the Cowboys, and Rico Dowdle had one hundred
[40:55] Speaker 1: and eighty three yards. You know, over six yards of
[40:58] Speaker 1: carry is that? And I said this when they traded Micah,
[41:02] Speaker 1: it was gonna look bad this year. But two first
[41:05] Speaker 1: round picks Dak playing this well, Go get an edge
[41:07] Speaker 1: rusher and go get a number two receiver, and you're
[41:10] Speaker 1: gonna be fine. In this league. You can get better,
[41:12] Speaker 1: really really fast. Plus they're gonna have free free agent
[41:15] Speaker 1: money and cap room next year. But I watched Bryce
[41:19] Speaker 1: Young in my takeaway, and I know nobody cares about Carolina,
[41:22] Speaker 1: but my takeaway is Bryce Young can look pretty darn
[41:24] Speaker 1: go against the bad defense. When I've seen him against
[41:27] Speaker 1: good pass rushes, he's totally engulfed. But about half the
[41:30] Speaker 1: league doesn't have a pass rush. Most of the league
[41:33] Speaker 1: isn't Denver, right, They're not Denver, They're not the Rams.
[41:39] Speaker 1: So I watched Bryce Young, and I'm like, do you
[41:42] Speaker 1: think Bryce Young gets an extension because my take is
[41:45] Speaker 1: he's middle of the pack. He may be the seventeenth
[41:47] Speaker 1: best quarterback, but against average defenses and that coach, he's capable.
[41:54] Speaker 2: Yeah. I mean, i'd probably put him in the two
[41:56] Speaker 2: A category where he probably will and everyone will fall
[41:59] Speaker 2: out of their chair when he gets one hundred and
[42:00] Speaker 2: fifty million do. Now it has to keep going well.
[42:03] Speaker 2: But like you said, the Saints are in their division.
[42:05] Speaker 2: You watch them. Their defense is horrendous. You know, Tampa
[42:08] Speaker 2: just has to blitz all the time. I mean they
[42:10] Speaker 2: have a bunch of injuries and older players, and you know, Atlanta,
[42:13] Speaker 2: in theory has good defense. I mean, we'll see how
[42:15] Speaker 2: it how translates over them, but they're not exactly playing
[42:17] Speaker 2: the eighty five Bears on a weekly basis. Now again,
[42:20] Speaker 2: I would probably rather have Tua than Bryce, but I
[42:23] Speaker 2: mean today the thing with the Cowboys, Dawdoll had one
[42:27] Speaker 2: hundred and eighty three yards. His long run was fifteen Collin.
[42:31] Speaker 2: I would bet in the history of one hundred and
[42:33] Speaker 2: eighty yard rushing attacks on average, the long run in
[42:36] Speaker 2: the game for a running back would have been like
[42:38] Speaker 2: forty plus yards. Because if you think if you ran
[42:40] Speaker 2: for one hundred and thirty yards like that's you're probably
[42:43] Speaker 2: gonna have a couple of twenty yard runs in there.
[42:45] Speaker 1: He had thirty carries, that's what they did in the seventies.
[42:50] Speaker 2: He also had a huge game. I think he had
[42:52] Speaker 2: four catches for fifty six yards. I mean I think
[42:54] Speaker 2: he has like five hundred yards from Scrimmage's last couple.
[42:57] Speaker 2: He's dominating. The Cowboys defense is horrendous. You how bad
[43:00] Speaker 2: the Jets are because they made the Jets. Their defense
[43:02] Speaker 2: actually looked pretty good against them last week. This game,
[43:05] Speaker 2: my favorite bet on the board beside Seattle, who won
[43:08] Speaker 2: out right was the over in This game started a
[43:10] Speaker 2: little slow, but as the game went on, these two
[43:12] Speaker 2: defenses are horrendous. They really are. Dallas probably gonna have
[43:16] Speaker 2: to feel good if you go Dallas wants to win
[43:18] Speaker 2: a game, I think they have to be above thirty.
[43:20] Speaker 2: I don't think they have any chance to win a
[43:22] Speaker 2: game against a competent team, not the Jets. If they're
[43:26] Speaker 2: in the twenty, even in the high twenties, I think
[43:28] Speaker 2: they got I mean, obviously they lost the day thirty
[43:29] Speaker 2: twenty seven, but I would say on average they're scoring defense.
[43:32] Speaker 2: When the season ends, I bet twenty eight to twenty nine,
[43:35] Speaker 2: it's gonna be one of the worst in the league,
[43:37] Speaker 2: if not the worst.
[43:38] Speaker 1: Dallas's defense is a quarterback stimulus package. Everybody, everybody looks good. No,
[43:44] Speaker 1: it's funny because I was I was watching this today
[43:46] Speaker 1: and yeah, we goo down had thirty carries. I mean,
[43:49] Speaker 1: that is that's what Jim Brown was doing. Like now
[43:52] Speaker 1: you wouldn't even think twenty Smith, Yeah, twenty is almost inappropriate.
[43:57] Speaker 1: But I think it does go to show that I
[43:59] Speaker 1: think people are terrified of driving to the stadium and
[44:03] Speaker 1: being bad at quarterback. Like when today Cleveland. That's why
[44:07] Speaker 1: Cincinnati's like, let's just get Joe Flacco. We won't be
[44:10] Speaker 1: terrible at quarterback, will be okay, And they were okay.
[44:12] Speaker 1: He just threw to Jamar Chase over and over and
[44:14] Speaker 1: over on the big drives, which is smart, Joe Flacco smart.
[44:18] Speaker 1: But I think the league is terrified of being horrible
[44:20] Speaker 1: at quarterback. And that's why Brock Pretty or Bryce young
[44:26] Speaker 1: is one gets paid. I think Bryce will get paid.
[44:29] Speaker 1: And I will say this as Carolina one. Dack through
[44:35] Speaker 1: all of this, he's just putting up unbelievable numbers. He
[44:39] Speaker 1: first of all, the surgery, he hasn't moved this well
[44:42] Speaker 1: in six years. He's moving well. It really goes to
[44:47] Speaker 1: show you we don't think it's an elite head coach.
[44:51] Speaker 1: They don't have a number one receiver or tight end.
[44:54] Speaker 1: The O line is being remade John In this league,
[44:58] Speaker 1: if you have an a quarter back a minus or
[45:01] Speaker 1: B plus plus you can win every Sunday. And that's
[45:06] Speaker 1: with Dak Prescott. I mean there are if Cede Lamb
[45:09] Speaker 1: makes a catch against Philadelphia, they win that game, remember
[45:12] Speaker 1: the opener. So it's like I look at Dallas and
[45:15] Speaker 1: I'm like, they're not a good team, but they're fun
[45:17] Speaker 1: to watch and Dak is I mean, there's fifteen quarterbacks
[45:22] Speaker 1: in this league that can spin it and he is
[45:24] Speaker 1: one of them.
[45:25] Speaker 2: I'll push back a little on the head coach. Now,
[45:28] Speaker 2: we're not really judging him on timeouts, and his defense
[45:31] Speaker 2: isn't good so even the aggregate of the team, but
[45:34] Speaker 2: he is the play caller and they have been e
[45:36] Speaker 2: leite on offense, and they lost Ceedee Lamb early in
[45:38] Speaker 2: the season and they have not skipped a beat. So
[45:39] Speaker 2: I would say most people would have been like, Brian
[45:42] Speaker 2: Schottenheimer is gonna call your plays. Let's just say that.
[45:45] Speaker 2: Let's say they had hired Colin Coward to be the
[45:47] Speaker 2: head coach, but Schottenheimer was his play caller as the OC, like, ah,
[45:51] Speaker 2: you could do better than that. He's been pretty awesome
[45:54] Speaker 2: at that, So I will give him that. And part
[45:56] Speaker 2: of it's gonna because I'm thinking today you get two
[45:58] Speaker 2: first round picks, and losing this game isn't the end
[46:01] Speaker 2: of the world for them. If they're picking, you know,
[46:03] Speaker 2: you'd rather pick tenth than twentieth, and you know the
[46:06] Speaker 2: Packers probably get and that pick's gonna be in the twenties.
[46:10] Speaker 2: But you're gonna have two picks. Pick a couple guys
[46:12] Speaker 2: on defense. Dak I just looked thirty two years old.
[46:15] Speaker 2: So the way football's going now, you can't touch the quarterback,
[46:18] Speaker 2: Why couldn't you have a couple several more seasons playing
[46:21] Speaker 2: at this level. He clearly has good chemistry with Brian.
[46:26] Speaker 2: You know, maybe they re signed with some of that
[46:28] Speaker 2: extra money George Picken. They already got Ceedee Lamb under contract. Finally,
[46:33] Speaker 2: maybe draft to running back in like the second, third,
[46:35] Speaker 2: fourth round, and all of a sudden, you have more
[46:38] Speaker 2: of a complete team. You get some of these defensive
[46:40] Speaker 2: backs healthy over the next couple of years. I got
[46:42] Speaker 2: a bunch of them under contract. They just need front
[46:44] Speaker 2: seven players. I would draftmult If you told me they
[46:47] Speaker 2: use both their first round picks this year on defensive lineman,
[46:49] Speaker 2: I'd be like smart, right, I wouldn't even I wouldn't
[46:52] Speaker 2: even veer away from the front seven if I were
[46:54] Speaker 2: them early in the draft.
[46:55] Speaker 1: Yeah, you're I looked at mock drafts today and there's
[46:58] Speaker 1: a bunch of edge rushers. It's a defensive line, defensive edge.
[47:03] Speaker 1: It's a very good draft. You know, Dante Moore probably
[47:07] Speaker 1: has a chance to go number one, the Oregon quarterback,
[47:09] Speaker 1: although he lost this weekend, but they don't care about that.
[47:12] Speaker 1: But I looked at it. It's a lot of defensive
[47:14] Speaker 1: players in this year's draft. It's a very good defensive draft.
[47:17] Speaker 1: And you know what, I've always been a little reticent
[47:21] Speaker 1: to draft a receiver in the first round high because
[47:23] Speaker 1: it's an ego position. Why feed into that. Yeah, there's
[47:27] Speaker 1: a couple of first round cornerbacks. There's a bunch of
[47:30] Speaker 1: edge and defensive linemen. That's what I said about Mikah.
[47:33] Speaker 1: It's gonna look bad for a year. Will It's like
[47:35] Speaker 1: when Shaq Kobe trade Shack goes to Miami. You were
[47:39] Speaker 1: going to get beaten up for two years. But in
[47:41] Speaker 1: the end, Kobe was the better, more committed player, he
[47:44] Speaker 1: was in better shape, fewer injuries, Kobe got gasol, and
[47:48] Speaker 1: the Lakers won two titles. Sometimes you lose, you can't
[47:52] Speaker 1: worry about winning the press conference, right, Like they always
[47:55] Speaker 1: say that in college football, don't win the press conference.
[47:57] Speaker 1: Get the right coach. You'll win the press conference if
[48:00] Speaker 1: you hire you know, the coach leaves James Franklin's fired,
[48:03] Speaker 1: and then they'll hire, you know, the interim coach because
[48:06] Speaker 1: he wins some games and everybody loves it and they're happy.
[48:09] Speaker 1: Was that the best coach? You're winning a press conference
[48:12] Speaker 1: because everybody's happy. So I look at next year two
[48:16] Speaker 1: first round and by the way, John as you know,
[48:18] Speaker 1: they don't need a quarterback, but six teams do. They
[48:21] Speaker 1: could turn those two first round picks into second and
[48:25] Speaker 1: third round picks added by moving down, which they probably
[48:29] Speaker 1: will do.
[48:30] Speaker 2: They've also drafted a ton of offensive linemen over the
[48:32] Speaker 2: last several years, so they've invested heavily in that position.
[48:36] Speaker 2: You could also say, like, unless Micah was Lawrence Taylor,
[48:40] Speaker 2: what difference is Micah making on this team? Like it's
[48:44] Speaker 2: not like he's turning them into some high end defense.
[48:46] Speaker 2: Their defense is atrocious. Guys are wide open constantly. They
[48:49] Speaker 2: can't cover a soul. I think if you wanted to
[48:52] Speaker 2: argue about it, you should have done it before the draft,
[48:55] Speaker 2: and you could have gotten more, but at the end
[48:57] Speaker 2: of the day, you got multiple first round picks, got
[49:00] Speaker 2: the money. It was a little clunky the way the
[49:02] Speaker 2: process played out, but the end result I think is
[49:06] Speaker 2: probably gonna work out in the Cowboys is long. You know,
[49:09] Speaker 2: the Raiders once did this when they traded Khalil Mack. Again,
[49:11] Speaker 2: that was a financial thing. They just didn't have the
[49:13] Speaker 2: money to pay them. They drafted the wrong players and
[49:16] Speaker 2: that bit them in the ass. So you get these picks,
[49:18] Speaker 2: you just if you nail. I don't know if, like
[49:21] Speaker 2: you said, let's say you turn two picks into four picks,
[49:26] Speaker 2: right moving back and manipulating the draft, if you hit
[49:29] Speaker 2: on three out of the four of them, it's a
[49:32] Speaker 2: home run because not only are you getting impact players,
[49:35] Speaker 2: they're cheap impact players. All right.
[49:38] Speaker 1: I think both you and I love this game. This
[49:41] Speaker 1: was my second favorite bet on the board, Seattle plus
[49:44] Speaker 1: one and a half, I said Friday on the herd
[49:45] Speaker 1: Blazing five bet the money line. I thought Jacksonville off
[49:50] Speaker 1: an emotional win, biggest win in forever for them against
[49:53] Speaker 1: Kansas City. They would come to short rest, come back
[49:56] Speaker 1: down to earth. Seattle was going to play with our
[49:58] Speaker 1: hair on fire and a tough division, they'd be more desperate.
[50:02] Speaker 1: I mean, you had ten total penalties for the Jags
[50:05] Speaker 1: in the first half. They had six penalties, three sacks allowed,
[50:08] Speaker 1: four punts. They were just a mess. They weren't really
[50:10] Speaker 1: ready to play. They hung around for a while. But
[50:14] Speaker 1: you know, I'll say this is a classic example, is
[50:19] Speaker 1: Trevor Lawrence had a fifty four yard touchdown pass taking
[50:23] Speaker 1: off the board because of a penalty. It's so Jacksonville.
[50:26] Speaker 1: I don't know how to explain this though. Seattle's won
[50:30] Speaker 1: nine straight road games. Now, remember Seattle is geographically. You know,
[50:36] Speaker 1: this is why the Vancouver Grizzlies didn't work. This is
[50:39] Speaker 1: why the Mariners for years haven't done well in the
[50:42] Speaker 1: free agent market. It's like a lot of players don't
[50:44] Speaker 1: want those long road trips. You're up jammed up in
[50:46] Speaker 1: the Pacific Northwest. It's inconceivable that Seattle, again in a
[50:51] Speaker 1: tough division, even Arizona is a hard place to go
[50:53] Speaker 1: and win is one nine straight road games. They travel
[50:55] Speaker 1: across the country, So let's start with that. Is that
[50:59] Speaker 1: just coincidence, happenstance? I mean, some of those have been
[51:02] Speaker 1: with Gino. That's a lot of road wins in a row.
[51:05] Speaker 2: They're ten and one on the road under Mike McDonald,
[51:09] Speaker 2: ten and one. That is insane. Again, they in theory
[51:12] Speaker 2: have one of the best places to play at home,
[51:15] Speaker 2: so if they can parlay, which they're gonna do because
[51:19] Speaker 2: they were today. They sacked him seven times. They were
[51:22] Speaker 2: all over Trevor Lawrence. Yeah. I mean he would scramble
[51:26] Speaker 2: in the pocket and there'd be another guy there. He
[51:28] Speaker 2: was getting hit all day long. And their DB's hit two.
[51:31] Speaker 2: I mean you could tell a couple of times Brian
[51:32] Speaker 2: Thomas like, I don't know if I want to catch
[51:34] Speaker 2: this one over.
[51:35] Speaker 1: His body language.
[51:36] Speaker 2: Yeah, he had that early in the season. It felt
[51:38] Speaker 2: like he got over that last week. And they were
[51:40] Speaker 2: talking about in the broadcast, like Liams had some talks
[51:42] Speaker 2: with him a couple of times, like, no way, I
[51:45] Speaker 2: never blame a player. I wouldn't want to get taken
[51:46] Speaker 2: out either. But the days of like Ronnie Lott are over.
[51:49] Speaker 2: You're not gonna get depleted. But still he doesn't want
[51:51] Speaker 2: to get hit. And the defense was awesome today. I
[51:55] Speaker 2: mean their physicality when he factored in the I heard
[51:59] Speaker 2: I was in the car maybe last week and Steve
[52:02] Speaker 2: Phillips the baseball Guy the former GM was on and
[52:04] Speaker 2: he said, by far every year Seattle. No team travels
[52:07] Speaker 2: farther in baseball than Seattle. Right, their travel is consistently
[52:11] Speaker 2: the longest. Think about this game for them, I mean,
[52:14] Speaker 2: what's that flight we just say naturally five? Is that?
[52:17] Speaker 2: Is that a five and a half? Is that a
[52:18] Speaker 2: six hour flight? I mean that's just that's a long trip. Now,
[52:22] Speaker 2: I'm with you. You know, Tampa the emotional win. I
[52:25] Speaker 2: respect Trevor like he's he's tougher than I think a
[52:28] Speaker 2: lot of people want to give him credit for. He's
[52:30] Speaker 2: actually shown last two weeks like he's tough, Like you
[52:33] Speaker 2: can't say that he's turned it down. I just don't
[52:35] Speaker 2: know how good he is. Like he's tough and he
[52:38] Speaker 2: has some physical capabilities, he can scramble around. But I like,
[52:41] Speaker 2: Sam to me, this is why I love the game.
[52:43] Speaker 2: I'm like, I actually think the Jacksonville's coaching coaching staff
[52:47] Speaker 2: is good. I mean, Liam's been impressive. Their coaching staff's good.
[52:50] Speaker 2: Clearly Seattle's got a good coaching staff. But the quarterback
[52:53] Speaker 2: mismatch in this game, I think pretty well. I mean
[52:55] Speaker 2: Sam coming into this game objectively based on stats is like,
[52:59] Speaker 2: might have been the best quarterback in the league through
[53:01] Speaker 2: the first five games.
[53:02] Speaker 1: Well, Jackson Smith and Jigba is a monster. He is
[53:06] Speaker 1: a fricking monster. One hundred and sixty two yards. Sam
[53:09] Speaker 1: had a throw it'll get no play, no highlights to
[53:12] Speaker 1: Cooper Cup and it was such a sly, clever, little throw.
[53:17] Speaker 1: And again Cooper at this point doesn't run, but it
[53:21] Speaker 1: was just like one of those Oh that's a pro throw.
[53:23] Speaker 1: Aaron had a couple of these. Aaron Rodgers does these
[53:26] Speaker 1: throws where you throw it into the corner. If it
[53:28] Speaker 1: gets picked, somebody goes one hundred yards and it was
[53:31] Speaker 1: Sam threw it and it was quick to Cooper Cup,
[53:33] Speaker 1: who doesn't separate any longer. But I think the thing
[53:37] Speaker 1: about Trevor Lawrence is why, I mean, Urban Meyer wasn't
[53:43] Speaker 1: a pro coach. That's fine, I mean Bill Pelow jackson
[53:45] Speaker 1: not a college coach, that's fine. But why has Jacksonville
[53:49] Speaker 1: always beat themselves? Why do they always have so many penalties?
[53:53] Speaker 1: Why do they always have so many big plays and
[53:55] Speaker 1: touchdowns called back? That's on Trevor. It's like, you can't
[53:58] Speaker 1: blame anybody else but Caleb Williams. When the operations of
[54:02] Speaker 1: the Bears offense looks clunky, like Drake May is a
[54:06] Speaker 1: freaking robot, like he's AI. He's not doing that. I
[54:09] Speaker 1: mean in New England's a young team with a bunch
[54:11] Speaker 1: of new players. They have penalties too, but Drake May's
[54:15] Speaker 1: figured it out quickly. I mean, Trevor's been in this
[54:17] Speaker 1: leege a long time and it's just today ten penalties,
[54:21] Speaker 1: touchdowns called back. I just always feel like they're a
[54:25] Speaker 1: bit of a They're just never buttoned up. And I
[54:29] Speaker 1: think Liam Cohen's a good coach, So I don't know.
[54:32] Speaker 1: I just I look at Seattle as a team like
[54:34] Speaker 1: Green Bay. They're young, they are not quite sure how
[54:37] Speaker 1: to put people away. I mean, you're watching this game,
[54:39] Speaker 1: and I'm watching this game. Seattle is the better team.
[54:41] Speaker 1: They won this thing by four touchdowns. They you know,
[54:45] Speaker 1: young teams struggle. How do you put teams away? They
[54:49] Speaker 1: just don't quite know how to do it yet. But
[54:52] Speaker 1: I'll tell you watching Seattle and watching their road record,
[54:56] Speaker 1: and remember young players, when they do get hurt, get
[54:59] Speaker 1: healthier sooner. I think Seattle blew Pittsburgh out. I think
[55:05] Speaker 1: Seattle is live. I still think they can win that
[55:08] Speaker 1: I watched the Rams today. I think Seattle. I'm going
[55:10] Speaker 1: to take Seattle to win the division.
[55:12] Speaker 2: Yeah, I did at the beginning of the year at
[55:14] Speaker 2: five to one. I'm with you. I also think, you know,
[55:18] Speaker 2: part of being one of the great prospects of all time,
[55:20] Speaker 2: which I think we all agree that was, he's not.
[55:23] Speaker 2: But like what goes with that at quarterback is not
[55:26] Speaker 2: just physical attributes. It's bringing everything to the table. You
[55:29] Speaker 2: watch some of these highlights of Peyton Manning or Troy Aikman,
[55:32] Speaker 2: these former number one picks John Elway screaming at guys,
[55:35] Speaker 2: holding them. They get to act like a coach. They're
[55:38] Speaker 2: the highest paid guy in the building. They're the heartbeat
[55:40] Speaker 2: of the building. Everyone's looking at them. And that's just
[55:43] Speaker 2: never going to be Trevor Lawrence's thing. So part of
[55:45] Speaker 2: the penalty is, like the coach can only yell you
[55:47] Speaker 2: so much. They literally do. Coaches yell at you constantly.
[55:49] Speaker 2: But like when the quarterback holds you accountable, and I
[55:53] Speaker 2: just don't think that they have that. I'm sure they
[55:55] Speaker 2: respect him because back to the toughness thing, he's really
[55:57] Speaker 2: proven that. I always kind of question that's he's showing
[56:00] Speaker 2: that this year, But I mean, yeah, they're just they
[56:04] Speaker 2: actually are a pretty talented team. But like if their
[56:08] Speaker 2: most talented player, Brian Thomas is not going to catch
[56:10] Speaker 2: balls over the middle consistently. Because Trevor at actually had
[56:13] Speaker 2: a couple nice passes in big spots over the middle,
[56:16] Speaker 2: they's got dropped or he didn't want to catch it,
[56:18] Speaker 2: I'm like, yeah, this is there's just going to be
[56:20] Speaker 2: something a little bits And it goes also back to
[56:21] Speaker 2: the Travis Hunter, think very talented player. I just feel
[56:25] Speaker 2: like they're a little lost with that. You know, with
[56:27] Speaker 2: him kind of going both ways. You can't just go
[56:29] Speaker 2: all in with him as an offensive player, which I
[56:31] Speaker 2: think is probably the right move. But yeah, I mean
[56:34] Speaker 2: I would pick the Colts to win that division right now,
[56:37] Speaker 2: and I would say I would say Seattle is a
[56:39] Speaker 2: very very good chance. They just got to be healthy.
[56:41] Speaker 2: If they're fully healthy, they're going to be very tough
[56:43] Speaker 2: to deal with.
[56:44] Speaker 1: By the way, don't want to spend too much time
[56:46] Speaker 1: on the Patriots twenty five beating the Saints twenty five nineteen.
[56:49] Speaker 1: But Drake May they are over three hundred yards eighteen
[56:53] Speaker 1: and twenty six. They're asking him to throw it. He
[56:56] Speaker 1: also had nine scrambles.
[56:58] Speaker 2: He's a hit.
[56:59] Speaker 1: There is no now again, he gets Mike Frable. They
[57:03] Speaker 1: spent some money on the O and D line. But
[57:06] Speaker 1: if you didn't watch this game, and it's a corner
[57:08] Speaker 1: TV game, as my friend Chad Milman would say, it's
[57:10] Speaker 1: it's it's that eighth blocks or Scott Hans here I
[57:13] Speaker 1: am in a lower eight. Drake May is a hit.
[57:18] Speaker 1: I think we can safely say that Drake May is
[57:20] Speaker 1: a hit.
[57:21] Speaker 2: Isn't powerful what confidence will do for young players? You
[57:25] Speaker 2: know early that that first game against the Raiders, even
[57:27] Speaker 2: I thought I was like, whoa, whoa, something's a little
[57:29] Speaker 2: something's a little off. They get a couple of wins
[57:32] Speaker 2: and then you have that moment that could be a
[57:34] Speaker 2: career changing moment. Buffalo Sunday Night Football. It's the number
[57:37] Speaker 2: one television show in America. I mean everyone, you're you're
[57:40] Speaker 2: playing the Bills that have the defending MVP, which I
[57:43] Speaker 2: would imagine in Drake May's life, he's never played an
[57:46] Speaker 2: environment quite like that. Yeah right, I mean that's you know,
[57:49] Speaker 2: some of these teams in the a c SE on
[57:51] Speaker 2: NC State probably doesn't feel like that on a Saturday
[57:54] Speaker 2: afternoon to win and play that well you saw today.
[57:57] Speaker 2: Now listen, Saint's got a little cowboy by. They are
[58:00] Speaker 2: not very good on defense. They're actually a fun team
[58:02] Speaker 2: to watch. They will chuck it around offensively. But he
[58:06] Speaker 2: looks like a dramatically more confident player. And you could
[58:10] Speaker 2: argue is that the most underrated aspect for a young
[58:14] Speaker 2: quarterback is like does he believe in himself because a
[58:16] Speaker 2: lot of these guys have talent. Well, we see guys
[58:19] Speaker 2: year and year out, but when they go into the tank,
[58:21] Speaker 2: look at Sam Donald. Sam Donald, we used to be like,
[58:23] Speaker 2: guy turns the ball over all the time. I'm watching him.
[58:26] Speaker 2: Now he doesn't put the ball in harms way.
[58:27] Speaker 1: Really well, I think remember Mike Rabel and Camp said
[58:31] Speaker 1: he's just got to believe in himself. He has to
[58:34] Speaker 1: realize that being a leader means being a leader every day.
[58:38] Speaker 1: That was Rabel's quote in the camp. So Brabel was
[58:41] Speaker 1: telling you he's gotten in him. But he's a young guy.
[58:44] Speaker 1: I always said, this is hard to walk in at
[58:48] Speaker 1: twenty five years old or twenty four. I mean Donald
[58:50] Speaker 1: was twenty one when he walked into the league in
[58:52] Speaker 1: New York and then act like a leader. There's thirty
[58:55] Speaker 1: four year old men in there. You're twenty one and
[58:58] Speaker 1: if you have self awareness, you want to be a jerk.
[59:01] Speaker 1: And I and I do think the Baker may Field,
[59:03] Speaker 1: you know, kind of the component that that, like, I
[59:05] Speaker 1: believe in myself, Baker's rare. He's an outlier. Most young
[59:08] Speaker 1: people come into a room and they're you know, they're
[59:10] Speaker 1: a little it's a little on inspiring. It's it's these
[59:14] Speaker 1: are professional. Nobody looks like Miles Garrett in college or
[59:18] Speaker 1: high school, right, Nobody else in the NFL looks like him.
[59:21] Speaker 1: So I just I think Drake and by the way,
[59:23] Speaker 1: Mike Rabel's intimidating and so and the and free agency.
[59:28] Speaker 1: They spent three hundred million dollars, so they brought in
[59:30] Speaker 1: some old dudes, like old dudes making money. And I
[59:34] Speaker 1: think Drake may was like Carolina football. You know, Mac
[59:36] Speaker 1: Brown is very chill. You know, it's Max like the
[59:40] Speaker 1: most likable guy.
[59:41] Speaker 2: You know.
[59:41] Speaker 1: Rabel's a barker. Rabel's intense, Rabel smart, Rabel gets after you.
[59:45] Speaker 1: So I think it's same with same with Josh. I mean,
[59:48] Speaker 1: Josh pretty intense guy, isn't he. Yeah, So and I
[59:51] Speaker 1: like Josh, but he'll bark. So I think it. I
[59:53] Speaker 1: think it's just kind of like, holy shit, this is
[59:57] Speaker 1: a lot. But man, those last four games i've Drake May.
[1:00:01] Speaker 1: Here's the air thing John. When he throws well running
[1:00:05] Speaker 1: like when he's moving, it's no big deal. Like he
[1:00:08] Speaker 1: doesn't lose his accuracy. A couple of these rolling left,
[1:00:12] Speaker 1: rolling right, it doesn't affect him at all. Not that
[1:00:14] Speaker 1: he throws better that way, but he throws moving is irrelevant.
[1:00:19] Speaker 1: Some guys move and their accuracy dips. Yeah, not at
[1:00:23] Speaker 1: all with Drake May. From what I can tell.
[1:00:25] Speaker 2: Well, the modern day quarterback is no longer. We've been
[1:00:28] Speaker 2: talking about this forever. Is the group of the Eli's
[1:00:32] Speaker 2: and the Philip Rivers and the paid Mannings. It is
[1:00:35] Speaker 2: the Jackson Darts. It's the Drake Mays, and it's led
[1:00:39] Speaker 2: by the Mahomes Lamar's. I mean, even Joe Burrow can move,
[1:00:43] Speaker 2: and obviously Josh Allen. So the you're just not getting
[1:00:47] Speaker 2: Jared Goff coming into the NFL anymore, you know, I mean,
[1:00:49] Speaker 2: if you can't move, these teams aren't gonna be that
[1:00:52] Speaker 2: interested in you in college, let alone in the pros.
[1:00:55] Speaker 2: The best players are out are not. I wouldn't even
[1:00:58] Speaker 2: say Lamar's an outlier. When I say a dual threat,
[1:01:00] Speaker 2: I just mean mobility. If you don't have mobility, Mac
[1:01:04] Speaker 2: Jones iss kind of got some mobility, and he's on
[1:01:07] Speaker 2: the low low end, right. I mean, I would say
[1:01:10] Speaker 2: average mobility is like Baker Mayfield relative, and even he
[1:01:13] Speaker 2: feels like lost a little weight, a little quicker. But
[1:01:16] Speaker 2: I mean Drake is what six four two thirty see,
[1:01:20] Speaker 2: he's cut from the Herbert cloth. I mean, that's what
[1:01:22] Speaker 2: it's ideally what you would want, and we might look
[1:01:24] Speaker 2: back and go, God, he went third.

[1:02:22] Speaker 1: let's wrap it with this. James Franklin got fired three
[1:02:25] Speaker 1: and three record. They won thirteen games last year, but
[1:02:28] Speaker 1: they had lost three close games in a row. You
[1:02:31] Speaker 1: may remember last year, even though they ended up number
[1:02:34] Speaker 1: five in the country, they barely beat Bowling Green. They
[1:02:37] Speaker 1: won several close games. They lost a Notre Dame at
[1:02:39] Speaker 1: the end and a close loss. But they won several
[1:02:41] Speaker 1: close games last year. This year they're losing all their
[1:02:44] Speaker 1: close games. But it's who they're losing to. You can't
[1:02:47] Speaker 1: lose the Northwestern you can't lose. You can lose to Oregon,
[1:02:50] Speaker 1: although at home it's rough, but you can't lose to UCLA.
[1:02:54] Speaker 1: Ucla is not a top forty team, although they have
[1:02:57] Speaker 1: new coaches now, and that you know, it looks like
[1:03:01] Speaker 1: it looks like the head coach that left may have
[1:03:03] Speaker 1: been getting in the way of a pretty good staff
[1:03:05] Speaker 1: beneath them, but he's only fifty three, so somebody's gonna
[1:03:08] Speaker 1: hire him. The danger in doing this because he wasn't
[1:03:14] Speaker 1: getting blown out, he was losing close games. The danger
[1:03:17] Speaker 1: in doing this is what if the interim comes in
[1:03:19] Speaker 1: wins five of the next six weeks, and then you
[1:03:23] Speaker 1: hire the interim because the players, you know, the players
[1:03:25] Speaker 1: go into the eighties office, the players go on social media.
[1:03:29] Speaker 1: The players are telling you they'll transfer if you don't
[1:03:31] Speaker 1: hire the interim coach, they'll transfer. They'll go into the
[1:03:33] Speaker 1: portal in place in small towns, like places like Penn State.
[1:03:39] Speaker 1: They've often bowed to that. You see this all the time, John.
[1:03:42] Speaker 1: The hit rate. Look at Michigan right now on giving
[1:03:45] Speaker 1: the popular assistant the job, it's not very good. Historically
[1:03:49] Speaker 1: it's poor. It's about a twenty percent hit rate. So
[1:03:52] Speaker 1: my take is, okay, now you've put yourself. Antonio Pierce
[1:03:57] Speaker 1: got his job that way, the popular substitute teacher. I
[1:04:01] Speaker 1: wouldn't have fired him, would you.
[1:04:03] Speaker 2: I think you had to. I think it's the first
[1:04:05] Speaker 2: time and you know, since they've been running the numbers
[1:04:08] Speaker 2: and thirty plus years that a team has lost to
[1:04:10] Speaker 2: back to back teams being a twenty plus point favorite.
[1:04:13] Speaker 2: I mean a team quit on them, right. They approached
[1:04:16] Speaker 2: the Oregon game like the Super Bowl. You know what's
[1:04:18] Speaker 2: pretty crazy is when we talk about this a lot
[1:04:20] Speaker 2: with young quarterbacks. They basically got two years now to
[1:04:23] Speaker 2: show in college football. These buyouts, which I thought were
[1:04:27] Speaker 2: going to be something impossible to overcome. I think there's
[1:04:29] Speaker 2: so much money flow. Didn't the Big ten just get
[1:04:31] Speaker 2: a two billion dollar investment from Venture Capital.
[1:04:34] Speaker 1: Or somebody Online they are speculating that Adidas bought out
[1:04:39] Speaker 1: James Franklin.
[1:04:40] Speaker 2: Who starts next year, because I googled it immediately ten years,
[1:04:44] Speaker 2: three hundred million dollars. So if I'm Adidas and I'm
[1:04:46] Speaker 2: in for ten years three hundred million dollars, right for
[1:04:48] Speaker 2: Penn State athletics, obviously, that's Penn State football and everything
[1:04:52] Speaker 2: else gets to piggyback off that. I need them to
[1:04:54] Speaker 2: be really good, and I'm kind of a junkie, so
[1:04:58] Speaker 2: I just YouTube some Penn State like local podcasts. They
[1:05:04] Speaker 2: have been losing a couple massive recruits the last couple
[1:05:06] Speaker 2: of weeks. A lot of people think James Franklin, especially
[1:05:09] Speaker 2: after the UCLA game, borderline just tapped out. It doesn't
[1:05:13] Speaker 2: matter because he's got fifty million even if he's fired.
[1:05:16] Speaker 2: So they almost didn't have a choice. This is not
[1:05:18] Speaker 2: the AD that gave him that big extension. That was
[1:05:20] Speaker 2: Sandy Barber former cal A d Who's just I mean,
[1:05:23] Speaker 2: Jimmy Sexton. Is there has there ever been a negotiating
[1:05:26] Speaker 2: negotiation mismatch quite like Jimmy Sexton. You can say the ads,
[1:05:31] Speaker 2: but the AD's all, you know, answer to the presidents
[1:05:33] Speaker 2: and the provosts, and it's academia verse Jimmy Sexton, and
[1:05:37] Speaker 2: he is destroying them. It has been all these guys
[1:05:41] Speaker 2: getting fired, and when Mike Norvel gets fired, and when
[1:05:44] Speaker 2: the dude of Florida, they're all his clients, he's owning them.
[1:05:48] Speaker 2: And I just think James frank they didn't have a choice.
[1:05:50] Speaker 2: I also think James Franklin, like, don't be He's going to,
[1:05:53] Speaker 2: like all of a sudden, be the Florida state head
[1:05:54] Speaker 2: coach or the aberd head coach. He is by far
[1:05:56] Speaker 2: one of the best candidates out there. What I have
[1:05:59] Speaker 2: no problem doing it. I also just wonder, this is
[1:06:02] Speaker 2: not twenty fifteen where you go Kurt Signetti one hundred
[1:06:06] Speaker 2: percent leaving Indiana, he leaves Indiana, well, they got a
[1:06:09] Speaker 2: bunch of money. He's making eight million dollars a year.
[1:06:11] Speaker 2: He clearly can buy players. So it's like he would
[1:06:14] Speaker 2: have had to leave ten seven eight pre nil. Does
[1:06:17] Speaker 2: he need to now?
[1:06:18] Speaker 1: Does no?
[1:06:19] Speaker 2: I mean so.
[1:06:21] Speaker 1: Also, Indiana is his baby. I mean it's it's not
[1:06:28] Speaker 1: Joe Paterno, Penn State, it's his baby. It's a basketball school.
[1:06:33] Speaker 1: If I'm Kurt Signetti eight million dollars. By the way,
[1:06:36] Speaker 1: they are so appreciative. Part of college football is being appreciated,
[1:06:41] Speaker 1: like Oregon's Oh is good, but people were frustrated with
[1:06:46] Speaker 1: Dan with Mario Christobal, couldn't win big road games. Oregon
[1:06:50] Speaker 1: fans don't expect you to win national titles. But you
[1:06:53] Speaker 1: gotta get up to ten wins because they know Phil
[1:06:56] Speaker 1: Knight's money and they have previous success doing that. But
[1:07:00] Speaker 1: can't you Yeah, that's right, that's right. And so Penn State.
[1:07:05] Speaker 1: I do think Penn State kind of views themselves at
[1:07:08] Speaker 1: a level they're not quite. It's rural, is a It's
[1:07:11] Speaker 1: not the easiest place to recruit. It's not merely as
[1:07:13] Speaker 1: glamorous as Columbus or an Arbor or usc in Los Angeles.
[1:07:19] Speaker 1: It's not as cool as Oregon. You lose cell phone
[1:07:22] Speaker 1: coverage out there by the Nitney lion In. It's so
[1:07:26] Speaker 1: and I'm not knocking it, but it's like James Franklin,
[1:07:28] Speaker 1: I don't think Penn State's a top seven program, and
[1:07:31] Speaker 1: I think they're losing. I think Oregon is, I think
[1:07:34] Speaker 1: Michigan is. I think Ohio State is, I think Notre
[1:07:37] Speaker 1: Dame is. Those are top seven, eight nine programs. I
[1:07:40] Speaker 1: think Penn State's on the outside of that. They view
[1:07:42] Speaker 1: themselves as that, and I think you're probably right. I
[1:07:45] Speaker 1: think he probably tapped out. And also I think ten
[1:07:48] Speaker 1: to twelve years coaching these powerhouses, if you don't win
[1:07:52] Speaker 1: a national championship, I mean, God, Calipari won, just won
[1:07:55] Speaker 1: at Kentucky and they ran him out. It's hard. Mark
[1:08:01] Speaker 1: Feu told me this when he was at Gonzaga. He goes,
[1:08:04] Speaker 1: I can recruit nothing but three star guys if I
[1:08:06] Speaker 1: wanted to, He goes, I could win at UCLA at
[1:08:10] Speaker 1: the level I'm winning at Gonzaga, but I would get
[1:08:13] Speaker 1: crushed if I was recruiting only three star guys. Like
[1:08:17] Speaker 1: you go to these blue blood programs, people follow that.
[1:08:21] Speaker 1: Fans are on your ass. So Kurt Signetti, nobody's sitting
[1:08:25] Speaker 1: around going get five star guys. It's his baby. Also,
[1:08:28] Speaker 1: when you're at Indiana, I mean, I think the portals
[1:08:32] Speaker 1: changed everything, John, don't. I think Indiana looks the part well.
[1:08:36] Speaker 2: He wouldn't even have been able to do what he's
[1:08:38] Speaker 2: doing if it wasn't for the portal because he landed
[1:08:40] Speaker 2: this Mendoza kid from cal He would have had to
[1:08:43] Speaker 2: just recruit either a junior college quarterback or recruit a kid.
[1:08:47] Speaker 2: You literally couldn't have done this five years ago. Now
[1:08:49] Speaker 2: you can turn This is why Belichick, if he does return,
[1:08:52] Speaker 2: is going to be heavily under the micro. You can
[1:08:54] Speaker 2: turn this thing around immediately. Yeah, now you don't. He's
[1:08:58] Speaker 2: doing it like the highest level. He's gonna go to
[1:08:59] Speaker 2: the play right back to back years. But you could
[1:09:01] Speaker 2: win eight nine game. You can go from two to
[1:09:03] Speaker 2: three wins to eight nine wins really fast. And that
[1:09:06] Speaker 2: was impossible I think unless you were at like Ohio
[1:09:08] Speaker 2: State or something ever, at one of these random schools.
[1:09:11] Speaker 2: But I think Penn Steak goes we were paying obviously
[1:09:14] Speaker 2: the head coach, they're paying their coordinators. Their defensive coordinator
[1:09:17] Speaker 2: highest paid coordinator in the league, their offensive coordinator, the
[1:09:19] Speaker 2: guy from Kansas Colneck. He makes a ton their roster.
[1:09:22] Speaker 2: They had a bunch of guys return you're cutting. This
[1:09:25] Speaker 2: is why I was kind of give him credit. Arch
[1:09:28] Speaker 2: Manning played his best game by far on Saturday against Oklahoma.
[1:09:31] Speaker 2: He was stats don't reflected he was. He was good
[1:09:34] Speaker 2: relative the way he'd been playing. But I was like,
[1:09:37] Speaker 2: these boosters and whoever's paying all this money is not
[1:09:40] Speaker 2: going to keep the money flowing. If you do not win,
[1:09:42] Speaker 2: you will get cut off. Now, I actually kind of
[1:09:46] Speaker 2: believe the Adidas thing. Even if you were at USC
[1:09:49] Speaker 2: or Notre Dame, who could just find fifteen million dollars,
[1:09:52] Speaker 2: Like even if you got five people that means ten
[1:09:54] Speaker 2: million dollars each. I mean, unless they're bezos or whatever,
[1:09:58] Speaker 2: you could be worth a couple hundred million dollars. Five
[1:10:00] Speaker 2: million dollars or ten million we're talking has a lot
[1:10:02] Speaker 2: of that's liquid cash. I mean, this is this is
[1:10:05] Speaker 2: a lot of money we're talking and that's just for
[1:10:07] Speaker 2: the head coach. That's not going to count the staff
[1:10:08] Speaker 2: when you blow them out. All the nil money are
[1:10:11] Speaker 2: paying the players. This is a lot more complicated now
[1:10:14] Speaker 2: with the the revenue streams that you need to fund football,
[1:10:18] Speaker 2: like you know all these basketball coaches. Basketball is actually
[1:10:22] Speaker 2: much easier to operate economically because I just need you know,
[1:10:25] Speaker 2: five or six million if I want to land three
[1:10:27] Speaker 2: or four good guys, and then I can get some
[1:10:29] Speaker 2: transfer portal guys from you know, mid major schools that
[1:10:32] Speaker 2: cost But my roster, I'm only going to play seven
[1:10:34] Speaker 2: eight guys in college football. It's like I got multiple
[1:10:37] Speaker 2: running backs, I got multiple wide receivers. I need some
[1:10:39] Speaker 2: d linemen. I also got to pay some of these,
[1:10:40] Speaker 2: especially at a place like Penn State, Like your high
[1:10:43] Speaker 2: school recruits cost money. Now let alone the returners so
[1:10:47] Speaker 2: and then let alone the coaches. This is has there
[1:10:50] Speaker 2: ever been a business? I mean, obviously like being a
[1:10:53] Speaker 2: ceo on Wall Street. But these guys Jimbo Fisher getting
[1:10:57] Speaker 2: paid seventy seven million dollars not to work, you know,
[1:10:59] Speaker 2: they say the America. I mean, how many human beings
[1:11:01] Speaker 2: have ever been these guys. I mean, at the end
[1:11:03] Speaker 2: of the day their job, they have a whistle around
[1:11:05] Speaker 2: their neck. I mean, what an incredible time to be
[1:11:08] Speaker 2: a football coach right now?
[1:11:09] Speaker 1: Yeah, James Franklin's a good looking guy. With high energy.
[1:11:12] Speaker 1: I think he'll go into broadcasting and probably be a
[1:11:15] Speaker 1: great fit. He's kind of a magnetic guy. Again, I
[1:11:19] Speaker 1: understand firing him. I think it's really dangerous to fire
[1:11:22] Speaker 1: a coach this early. They've got some better personnel than
[1:11:26] Speaker 1: about ninety percent of the teams they are playing. Good
[1:11:29] Speaker 1: luck if they go on a winning streak. Because the
[1:11:31] Speaker 1: interim coach is the substitute teacher, they're the most popular. Also,
[1:11:36] Speaker 1: let's throw this in. USC hammered Michigan thirty one to thirteen.
[1:11:39] Speaker 1: Didn't feel that close. The truth was USC played physical football.
[1:11:46] Speaker 1: I don't know if Michigan has the right coach. Underwood
[1:11:49] Speaker 1: and marsh that receiver are freaking great talents. But USC
[1:11:53] Speaker 1: actually stepped up. Now. They're an eight and a half
[1:11:55] Speaker 1: point dog at Notre Dame next week, and I don't
[1:11:58] Speaker 1: think they can beat Notre Dame. I don't think it's
[1:12:01] Speaker 1: a great matchup. Notre Dame's quarterback's really good. I think
[1:12:04] Speaker 1: he'll just pick him apart, they did get their best
[1:12:09] Speaker 1: player back on the back end of their defense, Kabari Ramsey.
[1:12:13] Speaker 1: So I don't think USC's gonna beat Notre Dame or
[1:12:16] Speaker 1: Oregon on the road. I don't think they're good enough.
[1:12:18] Speaker 2: To do that.
[1:12:20] Speaker 1: But I thought it was a pretty substantial win because
[1:12:22] Speaker 1: the knock has been Lincoln Riley's teams are soft, and
[1:12:25] Speaker 1: I thought in the trenches, I mean, god with King Miller,
[1:12:29] Speaker 1: a walk on freshman running back huge holes. I thought
[1:12:34] Speaker 1: it was the kind.
[1:12:35] Speaker 2: He looked like. He looked like Donnald today. I mean,
[1:12:37] Speaker 2: he was killing him.
[1:12:38] Speaker 1: I think it meant something to Lincoln Riley. It was
[1:12:42] Speaker 1: a very I mean it looked like old USC. The lights,
[1:12:47] Speaker 1: the crowd, you know you saw that. You know, it
[1:12:49] Speaker 1: just looked big the night, the night stuff. But I
[1:12:53] Speaker 1: thought it was big for I said this on Friday.
[1:12:55] Speaker 1: This was not just a typical USC game. They had
[1:12:58] Speaker 1: to win. I thought they would win. I didn't think
[1:13:00] Speaker 1: it would be that dominating. What was your takeaway?
[1:13:03] Speaker 2: I looked at the border early Saturday morning and I thought,
[1:13:06] Speaker 2: I don't think there's any individual head coach. It turned
[1:13:09] Speaker 2: out it was Franklin, but I assume they would win
[1:13:11] Speaker 2: that game. That had more pressure on him yesterday than
[1:13:14] Speaker 2: Lincoln Riley. I thought it was like a fork in
[1:13:15] Speaker 2: the road moment for his program. Yeah, he can't because
[1:13:19] Speaker 2: he would have been owned to he just would have
[1:13:20] Speaker 2: lost Illinois and lost to Michigan. And like you said,
[1:13:23] Speaker 2: they got hard games coming up. It's like you gotta
[1:13:25] Speaker 2: beat be able to be sure this is not Jim
[1:13:27] Speaker 2: Harbaugh JJ McCarthy, and you got to beat your own
[1:13:30] Speaker 2: more and a rookie quarterback or freshman quarterback and not
[1:13:32] Speaker 2: only beat him like you said, thirty one thirteen, that
[1:13:35] Speaker 2: felt like forty five to seven. Yeah, he through the
[1:13:38] Speaker 2: pick in the red zone at the at the end
[1:13:40] Speaker 2: of the first half of man. Yeah, they look offensively
[1:13:44] Speaker 2: for the first time, and it was I've watched I
[1:13:46] Speaker 2: would say fifty to seventy five percent of some of
[1:13:48] Speaker 2: their games. I hadn't watched start to finish every snap.
[1:13:51] Speaker 2: That felt a little Oklahoma e offensively. I mean that
[1:13:56] Speaker 2: receiver they have Lemon, that the number six is elite,
[1:13:59] Speaker 2: I mean he is. He is looks like I don't know,
[1:14:02] Speaker 2: I'm in Ross Saint Brown's. I mean he's a dominant player.
[1:14:06] Speaker 2: Their running game was awesome and that was a huge
[1:14:08] Speaker 2: part of Lincoln Riley's thing back with Baker Mayfield, Kyler
[1:14:11] Speaker 2: Murray and Jay was running the ball. So if you
[1:14:13] Speaker 2: can run the ball and you got NFL ride receivers.
[1:14:16] Speaker 2: They can let you up and listen.
[1:14:18] Speaker 1: They were down to their third running back. That's what's impressive.
[1:14:21] Speaker 1: That's a walk on. They didn't have Jordan, they didn't
[1:14:24] Speaker 1: have Sanders, they didn't have their top two running backs.
[1:14:26] Speaker 1: Now they use Jackson, who was a third or a
[1:14:30] Speaker 1: four stringer. He actually I thought as a freshman last year,
[1:14:33] Speaker 1: he's a bit he's kind of a different body composition.
[1:14:36] Speaker 1: He's a big, strong kid. I wish they'd play him more,
[1:14:39] Speaker 1: but he didn't. You know, they didn't have their stars
[1:14:41] Speaker 1: in the backfield, and they're a run first team.
[1:14:44] Speaker 2: I give them a fighting chance against Notre Dame. You know,
[1:14:48] Speaker 2: obviously they have no chance to win a lower scoring,
[1:14:51] Speaker 2: toughened out game. They would have to get a little
[1:14:53] Speaker 2: bit of a shootout and try to win, like I
[1:14:55] Speaker 2: don't know, thirty to twenty five or something. But I
[1:14:57] Speaker 2: was blown away by the efficiency on their office. Now,
[1:15:00] Speaker 2: you know, Winks kind of a feast or famine defensive coordinator.
[1:15:03] Speaker 2: I mean he's blitzing every single play. But I thought Lincoln,
[1:15:07] Speaker 2: that that was the moment where Lincoln versus Wink Martindale
[1:15:10] Speaker 2: looked like JV vers varsity. That was a pretty special
[1:15:13] Speaker 2: offensive performance. I will say, and this is your whole
[1:15:15] Speaker 2: thing about the Big Ten and the conference re alignment.
[1:15:18] Speaker 2: It's hard to watch that game and not go that
[1:15:19] Speaker 2: that's pretty cool.
[1:15:21] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean, listen, I'm a PAC twelve guy, but
[1:15:24] Speaker 1: you know, I'm sorry watching Oregon Penn State and watching
[1:15:29] Speaker 1: USC Michigan. Folks. It's worth it. I mean, it's just
[1:15:33] Speaker 1: worth it. It's nothing against Cal against Arizona, but it
[1:15:37] Speaker 1: was a very college football's regional to begin with. PAC
[1:15:40] Speaker 1: twelve felt super regional, and it was just like I
[1:15:45] Speaker 1: was done with it. I had told friends five years
[1:15:47] Speaker 1: ago USC wants to get out of the conference. I
[1:15:49] Speaker 1: mean there was there were companies. I don't even know
[1:15:53] Speaker 1: if it was Amazon or some company went to USC
[1:15:57] Speaker 1: and offered to just pay for their games. I know
[1:16:00] Speaker 1: Fox was interested years ago in doing it because they
[1:16:02] Speaker 1: were getting frustrated with a PAC twelve and the leadership
[1:16:05] Speaker 1: at the time.
[1:16:06] Speaker 2: So I I like it like NBC does for Notre Dame.
[1:16:09] Speaker 2: Just give him like an exclusive deal.
[1:16:11] Speaker 1: I mean, I don't I don't want to speak, you know,
[1:16:16] Speaker 1: because I don't have all the information. But I went
[1:16:20] Speaker 1: to Larry Jones, a former exec one time at Fox,
[1:16:23] Speaker 1: and I said, have you ever considered just for the
[1:16:25] Speaker 1: night programming on Saturday night just by USC's games, And
[1:16:30] Speaker 1: it wouldn't tell me if he was doing it or not.
[1:16:32] Speaker 1: He smiled kind of a sly smile, so I thought,
[1:16:34] Speaker 1: he's you know, he's a smart guy. I know Larry
[1:16:37] Speaker 1: very well. But it's one of those things they were
[1:16:39] Speaker 1: complaining for years, like why are we treated no better
[1:16:41] Speaker 1: than Washington State and Oregon State? What are we doing here?
[1:16:45] Speaker 1: Like we're the LA market. We don't get treated. I
[1:16:47] Speaker 1: mean Alabama and Saban run the SEC. And there's other
[1:16:51] Speaker 1: you know, LSU in Georgia and Tennessee and Florida. There's
[1:16:54] Speaker 1: big boy football everywhere. So it's people. I understand, people
[1:17:00] Speaker 1: that love tradition. You know, they're outraged about to live tour.
[1:17:04] Speaker 1: I get it. I'm not that guy. But it's like baseball.
[1:17:07] Speaker 1: I'm sorry, but the Mariners Tigers played fifteen in the
[1:17:10] Speaker 1: game would have been seven hours years ago. But with
[1:17:13] Speaker 1: the pitch clock, you can sit and watch fifteen innings
[1:17:16] Speaker 1: of baseball and it's pretty compelling. It moves pretty quickly.
[1:17:20] Speaker 2: So I don't know.
[1:17:21] Speaker 1: I just thought it was a huge win. Here's the thing,
[1:17:23] Speaker 1: about Lincoln Riley. Two things. They beat LSU, Texas A
[1:17:26] Speaker 1: and M last year and should have beaten Penn State,
[1:17:29] Speaker 1: and now they've beaten Michigan. So like he's beating some
[1:17:33] Speaker 1: of the big teams. You can say, well, LSU and
[1:17:35] Speaker 1: Texas and listen, they're on the schedule, they're well funded programs.
[1:17:40] Speaker 1: I don't think they can win over Oregon or at Opson.
[1:17:43] Speaker 1: Oregon's a bad matchup. I don't think Notre Dame. Teams
[1:17:46] Speaker 1: with great quarterbacks will give them trouble. You can pick
[1:17:49] Speaker 1: them apart. But the second thing about him is you
[1:17:52] Speaker 1: can't watch USC football and not see the coaching. Jade
[1:17:55] Speaker 1: and Mayava was at UNLV. I watched Jade Mayava play
[1:17:58] Speaker 1: because I used to go to every UNLV football game
[1:18:01] Speaker 1: when I was a sportscaster in Vegas, so I kind
[1:18:03] Speaker 1: of follow it. Jane Miava was not an NFL prospect.
[1:18:07] Speaker 1: I saw a mock draft. Today they have him going
[1:18:09] Speaker 1: in the first That's a product of Lincoln Riley. That
[1:18:12] Speaker 1: kid was so reckless and sloppy last year. That pick
[1:18:15] Speaker 1: he had against Michigan was his first really bad pick
[1:18:19] Speaker 1: of the year. He did that regularly.
[1:18:20] Speaker 2: Last year.
[1:18:21] Speaker 1: He had a couple of them against Notre Dame. So
[1:18:23] Speaker 1: when you watch USC's offense, you don't have to like
[1:18:26] Speaker 1: their toughness of their culture. Lincoln Riley's a really smart
[1:18:29] Speaker 1: offensive coach. They use ever, they squeeze every ounce out
[1:18:33] Speaker 1: of their talent. They don't have a lot of five
[1:18:34] Speaker 1: star guys. John Lemon's are really high end receiver. They
[1:18:38] Speaker 1: got a lot of three star, four star guys. The
[1:18:41] Speaker 1: left tackle they flipped from Notre Dame. But this is
[1:18:43] Speaker 1: not justin tune. Who the right tackle, Raymond the left guard?
[1:18:48] Speaker 1: You know these are three star recruits. They're not getting
[1:18:50] Speaker 1: a lot of love. So the guy can coach? Can
[1:18:53] Speaker 1: he build a culture? I don't know.
[1:18:55] Speaker 2: I'd say this, he wins this weekend, you can drop
[1:18:58] Speaker 2: the Jim Moral playoffs because they'd be in a have
[1:19:00] Speaker 2: a good shot. They would start feeling like a serious
[1:19:03] Speaker 2: playoff team.
[1:19:04] Speaker 1: All right for hard rock bet John, I like I
[1:19:08] Speaker 1: went four and on my blazing five. I like Washington
[1:19:11] Speaker 1: minus four and a half against Chicago number one. Chicago
[1:19:15] Speaker 1: has not been a good road team four years Washington.
[1:19:19] Speaker 1: If you watch the second half against the Chargers, Jaden
[1:19:22] Speaker 1: Daniels looked like last year's Jaden Daniels, Terry McLaurin appears
[1:19:27] Speaker 1: to be healthy. I think Washington right now is a
[1:19:31] Speaker 1: better operation. Now. Chicago was off last week. That can
[1:19:37] Speaker 1: certainly help with your first series or two. But the
[1:19:40] Speaker 1: Bears have been good on their first series or two.
[1:19:43] Speaker 1: I don't expect that too. That's not my issue about Chicago.
[1:19:46] Speaker 1: It's the basic operation when you get off script. I
[1:19:48] Speaker 1: don't think extra time necessarily helps. Can only put so
[1:19:51] Speaker 1: many plays on script. So I like Washington at home
[1:19:55] Speaker 1: in this spot. I think it's gonna be a wild,
[1:19:59] Speaker 1: loud environment. That may not matter in baseball, I think
[1:20:02] Speaker 1: it matters a lot in the NFL when you're a
[1:20:05] Speaker 1: young quarterback and a young team going on the road.
[1:20:08] Speaker 1: I like Washington to win and cover.
[1:20:11] Speaker 2: I'm gonna take the Bears in the points because I
[1:20:13] Speaker 2: think anytime that you have a young quarterback and a
[1:20:15] Speaker 2: first time head coach, they can use that dead time
[1:20:19] Speaker 2: to kind of throw away some stuff that's not working.
[1:20:21] Speaker 2: So I'm with you that they have looked good coming
[1:20:23] Speaker 2: out the game. That doesn't change. But I think a
[1:20:25] Speaker 2: huge part of like Andy Reid or Kyle Shanahan or
[1:20:27] Speaker 2: Sean McVay, these guys have a lot of success off
[1:20:29] Speaker 2: the bye week is because they can simplify stuff. They go,
[1:20:33] Speaker 2: this isn't working, we keep doing throw it away, throw
[1:20:35] Speaker 2: it in the garbage, and listen if we believe Ben
[1:20:38] Speaker 2: Johnson is the thirteen million dollar coach and this offensive
[1:20:43] Speaker 2: genius and just this high level guy. I think that
[1:20:46] Speaker 2: they look a little more buttoned up because one knock
[1:20:48] Speaker 2: on them would be even remove. Caleb was like, you know,
[1:20:50] Speaker 2: they've a lot of penalties, a lot of stuff going on.
[1:20:53] Speaker 2: You have the bye week, you take a deep breath
[1:20:55] Speaker 2: and you just get rid of some of the complicated
[1:20:57] Speaker 2: stuff that some of these young coaches like throwing at you.
[1:21:00] Speaker 2: So I like the Bears in the points, especially because
[1:21:03] Speaker 2: this has got to be a little you know, the
[1:21:04] Speaker 2: Hail Mary game. They had to be talking about this
[1:21:07] Speaker 2: for the last two weeks that a lot of those
[1:21:09] Speaker 2: guys that he's going to roll out on Monday night
[1:21:12] Speaker 2: were a part of that. I mean, that's one of
[1:21:14] Speaker 2: the worst losses you'll ever see.
[1:21:16] Speaker 1: John Middlecoff Sunday, let's go watch some football.
[1:21:19] Speaker 2: See it the volume
