Colin is joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” and “Go Low”. They start with Rory McIlroy’s historic repeat, winning back to back at the Masters, and why his win last year took the pressure off and allowed him to play his best golf and now has a chance to become a Top 5 all-time golfer (2:30). They compare Rory’s up-and-down nature on the course to more steady golfers like Tiger & Scheffler, and why he makes for great, drama-filled television (7:00). They predict Rory will probably win 4-5 more majors in the next few years and debate where he stacks up against the all-time greats (10:00). Colin explains why he’s not typically a traditionalist but loves the tradition of the Masters, and that Augusta National stands out as special (14:30). They pivot to the Mike Vrabel/Diana Russini controversy, and Colin explains there’s a difference between moral & ethical standards and explains why only standards apply to Vrabel, but both standards apply to Russini as a journalist (24:30). They look ahead to the NFL draft and discuss the biggest storylines surrounding the NFL draft and John argues the Chiefs picking high is a fascinating story & could potentially go in several different directions with their pick (35:15). [0:01] Speaker 1: The volume. Today's show is brought to you by our
[0:05] Speaker 1: presenting sponsor, American Beverage. If you think about some of
[0:08] Speaker 1: the most iconic drinks in the country, the ones you
[0:11] Speaker 1: grab a barbecue, the ones you raised to celebrate your team,
[0:15] Speaker 1: that have been part of your story for decades, Coke, Doctor, Pepper, Pepsi,
[0:18] Speaker 1: there's something people don't always think about. The companies behind
[0:21] Speaker 1: those brands are still making their drinks right here in
[0:23] Speaker 1: the US. While there's a lot of talk about bringing
[0:25] Speaker 1: manufacturing back, America's beverage companies never left their American companies,
[0:29] Speaker 1: making American products with American workers in America's hometown. So
[0:32] Speaker 1: two hundred and seventy five thousand men and women across
[0:35] Speaker 1: all fifty states, real jobs, good paying jobs, the kind
[0:38] Speaker 1: of jobs you can raise a family on. So more
[0:39] Speaker 1: than one hundred years, those brands have been part of
[0:42] Speaker 1: everyday lives and they're still here, still investing, still operating
[0:45] Speaker 1: in communities around the country. So if you care about
[0:47] Speaker 1: strong old economies and companies that walk the walk, check
[0:50] Speaker 1: out the good work and what they're doing it. We
[0:52] Speaker 1: deliver for America dot Org. All right, it's a rare repeat.
[1:05] Speaker 1: It's been done a few times, Jack Nicholas, Tiger Woods,
[1:09] Speaker 1: Nick Faldo, the Green Jacket, and now Rory McElroy. You know,
[1:15] Speaker 1: it's interesting last year that roller coaster where he had
[1:20] Speaker 1: you know, the shot goes into the drink and he
[1:22] Speaker 1: has to go to a playoff. It's interesting the confidence
[1:27] Speaker 1: John he had today, multiple shots where he got into trouble.
[1:33] Speaker 1: You know, he has some trouble detour saved himself multiple times.
[1:39] Speaker 1: I mean here there were chances even on eighteen you're like,
[1:42] Speaker 1: oh brother, but yeah, I mean the reality is, this
[1:46] Speaker 1: is what happened with John Elway and your Otani's and
[1:50] Speaker 1: your shacks. You know, you have that this this prodigy talent, right,
[1:57] Speaker 1: and you can struggle, struggle, struggle and you get the
[2:00] Speaker 1: first one and it's remarkable. We had Alan Ship knock on.
[2:04] Speaker 1: He said, you know, Thursday, Friday, this is gonna be,
[2:07] Speaker 1: you know, as as much fun as Rory's ever had
[2:09] Speaker 1: playing golf.
[2:11] Speaker 2: And it was.
[2:12] Speaker 1: And I just I thought his ability and his confidence
[2:16] Speaker 1: when he got into trouble today all stems from last year,
[2:22] Speaker 1: which is fairly obvious.
[2:24] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean when you have a he went into
[2:26] Speaker 2: this week with no pressure, right, He's a defending champ.
[2:29] Speaker 2: Just come in, have a good time. But then he
[2:31] Speaker 2: has a six shot lead after two days You're like,
[2:34] Speaker 2: well you kind of you can't blow it now. And
[2:36] Speaker 2: then yesterday was a roller coaster. I do think having
[2:39] Speaker 2: that championship, you know, winning it last year. Freddy Couple
[2:42] Speaker 2: said after the dinner his first thought was, Rory might
[2:45] Speaker 2: never lose again here because the comp he's clearly the
[2:48] Speaker 2: most talented guy him and Scheffler. Yeah, but Rory battles
[2:52] Speaker 2: the difference between Tiger, who would just suffocate you. Rory
[2:56] Speaker 2: to me is like Phil on steroids. He is a
[2:59] Speaker 2: roller coat. He is great theater. CBS has to love this.
[3:03] Speaker 2: I mean you were just on the edge of your
[3:04] Speaker 2: seat over the weekend. At any moment, he could have
[3:07] Speaker 2: a ten foot eagle putt or be hitting out of
[3:09] Speaker 2: the trees and holding on for dear life for Bogey
[3:12] Speaker 2: and clearly today like he could have a hole. You're like,
[3:16] Speaker 2: he's gonna lose this guy, and then he burdi back
[3:18] Speaker 2: to back holes. Yeah, and then he'd have another shot
[3:20] Speaker 2: where he'd rip it way left, he'd rip it way right.
[3:22] Speaker 2: Even on eighteen. Yeah, you're like, Rory just hit a
[3:25] Speaker 2: five arm down the middle of the hole, just playing conservatively,
[3:29] Speaker 2: and you could tell he was like, should I do that?
[3:31] Speaker 2: He hand me the driver and he pumps it into
[3:33] Speaker 2: the trees. Even CBS cameras couldn't find the ball when
[3:36] Speaker 2: he hit it over the trees, Like what did he
[3:37] Speaker 2: just do? Yeah, but he has a chance. You know,
[3:41] Speaker 2: he's still in the prime of his career, mid thirties,
[3:43] Speaker 2: in great shape. He's gonna win this tournament again. You know,
[3:47] Speaker 2: he's gonna be one of those guys that wins the
[3:48] Speaker 2: Master of three or four times. He rattles off a
[3:50] Speaker 2: couple other majors, probably never catching Tiger. But he's now
[3:54] Speaker 2: tight Phil, He's past Koepka. I mean, you're looking at
[3:57] Speaker 2: a guy that's probably gonna end. He's got a pretty
[3:59] Speaker 2: good chance to have double did you Majors? And be clearly,
[4:01] Speaker 2: I don't know what be considered a top five golfer
[4:04] Speaker 2: of all time behind Tiger Jack oh Arnold like in
[4:06] Speaker 2: that in that class. Clearly.
[4:08] Speaker 1: Yeah, I thought I thought today was about recovery shots.
[4:11] Speaker 1: That's I really if you had to, you know, repeat
[4:15] Speaker 1: and recovery from Rory uh just recovered constantly. So Jack
[4:20] Speaker 1: won six Masters Tiger five, Palmer four, and then there's
[4:25] Speaker 1: a bunch of guys at three, and now Rory's at two.
[4:30] Speaker 1: You know, it's interesting you talk Tiger. My producer Ryan
[4:33] Speaker 1: sent me a text. He's like, you know, Tiger in
[4:35] Speaker 1: his prime was a little like Brady, almost robotic. I mean,
[4:39] Speaker 1: if he went into a Sunday with a lead, he's
[4:43] Speaker 1: just going to extend it. He didn't give you any chance.
[4:47] Speaker 1: Whereas Rory, to your point, it's more disciplined than Phil.
[4:51] Speaker 1: But he's got a little mahomes where he's gonna add
[4:53] Speaker 1: lib a little bit. He's he's got flair. I mean,
[4:57] Speaker 1: they're all like Mickelson in his prime. Especially Tiger and
[5:00] Speaker 1: Rory are are incredible off the tee. But I find
[5:07] Speaker 1: there was something about all of them, the aspirational sort
[5:11] Speaker 1: of nature of Tiger, the wildness of Phil. But I
[5:16] Speaker 1: think like Rory is a balance for me. I find
[5:18] Speaker 1: him more likable than Tiger. I think he's more disciplined
[5:21] Speaker 1: than Phil. And I don't know. I just when I
[5:25] Speaker 1: he gets me to a television set and I don't leave.
[5:28] Speaker 1: I mean I didn't. I watched it an hour and
[5:31] Speaker 1: a half before it started. I didn't shot today. It
[5:34] Speaker 1: was great.
[5:34] Speaker 2: This tournament's great. This tournament when you have one of
[5:37] Speaker 2: the all time greats in the mix or have a
[5:39] Speaker 2: great chance, is to me as good of a theater
[5:42] Speaker 2: non football as we have in this country. And I
[5:45] Speaker 2: think the thing that Rory has people forget this. You know,
[5:49] Speaker 2: Tiger came up in an era where they equipment was
[5:51] Speaker 2: you sprayed the ball around. So if you watch some
[5:54] Speaker 2: of the Tiger highlights, it's hitting shots over trees from
[5:57] Speaker 2: two hundred yards to ten feet. Phil was you know
[6:00] Speaker 2: that was his game, right, I mean one of the
[6:03] Speaker 2: great short games of all time because he was way
[6:06] Speaker 2: right right, so he had to hit a crazy flop shot.
[6:08] Speaker 2: Rory has this element to his game that is just
[6:13] Speaker 2: you never know what's coming. Like on any given shot,
[6:16] Speaker 2: he could hit it into the water or hit it
[6:18] Speaker 2: into the trees. Kepka when he was rolling and winning
[6:21] Speaker 2: the majors, fairway green two putt, fairway green two put
[6:25] Speaker 2: occasional birdies, no screw ups, that was Keopka right, no undersa.
[6:30] Speaker 1: He was five under this weekend, so a good a
[6:32] Speaker 1: good week playing well.
[6:34] Speaker 2: Yeah, Scotty today can get rolling Scott, He's just fairway
[6:37] Speaker 2: hitting it close Rory has those holes clearly, but he
[6:40] Speaker 2: also has holes. Rory, what are you doing here? I
[6:43] Speaker 2: actually think these last couple of years, for non niche
[6:48] Speaker 2: golf fans, he's become much. You know, forever, Tiger was
[6:52] Speaker 2: the you know, probably the two thousands, as famous as
[6:54] Speaker 2: anyone on the planet, right, and it was making at
[6:56] Speaker 2: golf ninety million dollars a year. Remember Phil was like
[7:00] Speaker 2: sixty seventy and these two guys, and it feel kind
[7:02] Speaker 2: of drafted off Tiger. Yeah, Rory, it to me, has
[7:05] Speaker 2: vaulted himself and just everyone like my wife's talking about him,
[7:09] Speaker 2: my mom. So he's just a polarizing individual because it's like,
[7:12] Speaker 2: is this guy true? Because the one thing with Phil
[7:14] Speaker 2: I've always I was always a Phil fan, But is
[7:17] Speaker 2: the authentic? Is the authentic Tiger sometimes is too robotic,
[7:20] Speaker 2: too big of an a hole? Rory's pretty genuine, you know.
[7:23] Speaker 2: He just all of his press conferences this week was
[7:26] Speaker 2: just like, you know, this is awesome, but I got
[7:28] Speaker 2: a close step by step, keep swinging hard like he
[7:31] Speaker 2: kind of embraced it. Clearly less pressure than the elephant,
[7:34] Speaker 2: you know, the monkey that was on his back about
[7:35] Speaker 2: that clearly freed him up. Like, I don't know if
[7:38] Speaker 2: he blows the six shot lead yesterday, if he hadn't
[7:41] Speaker 2: won the Master, and he was able to win the
[7:43] Speaker 2: day exactly, and that you have that confidence because I
[7:46] Speaker 2: had confidence in him today. I just didn't know if,
[7:49] Speaker 2: like Justin Rose was gonna have birdie you know, eight
[7:51] Speaker 2: holes coming down the stretch and maybe except but I
[7:53] Speaker 2: didn't think Rory was gonna quote unquote choke like he
[7:55] Speaker 2: almost did last year. It was he was gonna make
[7:57] Speaker 2: enough birdies. I thought he made a big shot today.
[8:00] Speaker 2: He BIRDI when it was kind of falling apart. He
[8:02] Speaker 2: birdied seven and eight. Yeah, he missed a close one
[8:06] Speaker 2: on nine, like he started playing well when it got
[8:09] Speaker 2: really shaky. And I don't know if he settles the
[8:12] Speaker 2: ship because historically he didn't, and I think last year
[8:16] Speaker 2: cold I think this opens the gates for I think
[8:19] Speaker 2: you're looking at a guy that's gonna win four or
[8:21] Speaker 2: five more majors over the course of the next three
[8:23] Speaker 2: or four years.
[8:24] Speaker 1: Where do we put you know, I was thinking about Mickelson.
[8:26] Speaker 1: So Mickelson was never rated number one, although he was
[8:29] Speaker 1: number two for two hundred and seventy weeks. I don't
[8:32] Speaker 1: know why that's embedded in my head, but it is.
[8:33] Speaker 2: It's like asking Peyton Manning, why aren't you the best
[8:35] Speaker 2: quarterback ever? Like I played with.
[8:37] Speaker 1: Tom tom Well, but Phil won three Masters. Phil also
[8:44] Speaker 1: he was never number one. Phill didn't win the US Open,
[8:46] Speaker 1: although again I think he finished second six times, probably
[8:51] Speaker 1: should have won about three. Yep, some of that his
[8:53] Speaker 1: own undoing. I think. I think Rory to me, is
[9:00] Speaker 1: just the perfect combination of Tiger and his prime in Phil.
[9:03] Speaker 1: He's just a wild card enough to make him fascinating
[9:07] Speaker 1: and vulnerable. You know, Scotti schefter is a bit robotic.
[9:10] Speaker 1: He had a shot today toward the end where I
[9:13] Speaker 1: thought to myself, Ah, here he comes, Harry comes, and
[9:17] Speaker 1: that's why the ball went back off the green rolled
[9:20] Speaker 1: back and I thought, oh, that's a rare for him.
[9:23] Speaker 1: That's an incredible rare miss. But I don't know. I
[9:29] Speaker 1: look at is Rory better than Phil Micholson all the time?
[9:31] Speaker 1: I think I would put him ahead.
[9:33] Speaker 2: Yeah, to me, it's close to a coin flip. I mean,
[9:35] Speaker 2: Phil truly is one of the great players of all time.
[9:38] Speaker 2: I mean, if Tiger doesn't come around, it's kind of
[9:39] Speaker 2: like Peyton Manning. I mean, we're probably considering this guy
[9:42] Speaker 2: a little differently, and we already consider them very highly,
[9:45] Speaker 2: you know. I mean there's a chance Tiger doesn't come around.
[9:47] Speaker 2: Phil has twelve majors, right, just because there was an
[9:50] Speaker 2: intimidation factor for a long time. Phil didn't win his
[9:52] Speaker 2: first major till his mid thirties. You know. Rory just
[9:55] Speaker 2: had that drought, right, Rory banged off like four early
[9:58] Speaker 2: and then he missed ten years. I think the thing
[10:01] Speaker 2: that Rory has going for him is it feels like
[10:05] Speaker 2: he's entering the prime of his career.
[10:06] Speaker 1: Well, he's an impeccable shape.
[10:08] Speaker 2: Impeccable shape. His mental fortitude and toughness now has been
[10:12] Speaker 2: on display these last couple of years. So he's think
[10:15] Speaker 2: about the reps he has. I mean, he's been playing
[10:17] Speaker 2: this tournament. It is twenty nineteen, when he was twenty
[10:19] Speaker 2: years old. Did you watch the Amazon Prime doc on Rory? No?
[10:23] Speaker 2: I have.
[10:24] Speaker 1: I just finished it.
[10:24] Speaker 2: If you have any Yeah, the book I listened to
[10:28] Speaker 2: a ship nock. I didn't quite realize that the doc
[10:31] Speaker 2: does a pretty good job. It's basically goes over last
[10:34] Speaker 2: year's Masters, but a lot of look back to when
[10:37] Speaker 2: he was a kid. He was I don't want to
[10:40] Speaker 2: say Tiger you know, on TV at three years old.
[10:43] Speaker 1: But he was a over there, oh, no question.
[10:46] Speaker 2: And this is a guy. The reps this guy has
[10:48] Speaker 2: and the talent this guy has was pretty well established
[10:52] Speaker 2: by like twelve years old. And you know there's a
[10:56] Speaker 2: kind of pressure, especially over there. Golf's a really big deal.
[10:59] Speaker 2: He carries the weight, you know, of a nation of
[11:01] Speaker 2: the European golfers. And I think, you know, I think
[11:05] Speaker 2: he struggles with the vulnerability. Now he's you know, they're
[11:08] Speaker 2: just you and Ship Duck talked about it the live
[11:10] Speaker 2: thing for a couple of years. He's pretty freed up now.
[11:14] Speaker 2: You know, his parents are healthy and happy and live by,
[11:16] Speaker 2: and he gets to play with his dad all the time.
[11:18] Speaker 2: He's got the young daughter that he takes to school.
[11:21] Speaker 2: I think there's a chance that now he didn't play
[11:25] Speaker 2: that great at times the last couple of days. I mean,
[11:27] Speaker 2: he sprained it all over the map. You know what,
[11:29] Speaker 2: I bet he says.
[11:31] Speaker 1: The thing about this, they how many putts he missed
[11:33] Speaker 1: on the front nine today.
[11:34] Speaker 2: You know, if you were going up against like Greg
[11:36] Speaker 2: Maddox or Pedro or Nolan Ryan, and they're probably they're like,
[11:38] Speaker 2: you know, I had my sea stuff today, like you
[11:40] Speaker 2: just went eight and struck out nine because they could
[11:43] Speaker 2: have their seat. Or you know Tom Bradley, I didn't
[11:45] Speaker 2: play that well well, he led four touchdown drives because
[11:48] Speaker 2: they could just find a way to figure it out.
[11:50] Speaker 2: Happens with basketball players all the time. To me, Rory,
[11:53] Speaker 2: I'd say he had his B minus C plus game
[11:56] Speaker 2: over the aggregate of this weekend and still won. I
[11:59] Speaker 2: guess he TechEd one by one shot, but he was
[12:02] Speaker 2: up six shots and you know had a three shot
[12:04] Speaker 2: John back nine. Today he threw four.
[12:07] Speaker 1: He missed two Bertie putts, so it was.
[12:09] Speaker 2: His putting was a little radic and his driver the
[12:11] Speaker 2: last two days. On Friday shot I think seven under,
[12:16] Speaker 2: he was hitting out of the trees on he didn't
[12:17] Speaker 2: hit a par five fairway, but he made Bertie on
[12:21] Speaker 2: every hole and people were talking about it. To cover
[12:23] Speaker 2: the sport of like he really knows now this course.
[12:26] Speaker 2: The one thing that's unique about this course. Remember a
[12:29] Speaker 2: couple of years ago Phil finished second. Justin Rose is
[12:31] Speaker 2: forty five. You know, in finishing top five every single year,
[12:35] Speaker 2: it feels like it's the only course of the majors
[12:37] Speaker 2: where you come back every year and it's so unique.
[12:40] Speaker 2: I truly believe he's got a chance to win this tournament.
[12:43] Speaker 2: Like Freddy said, I don't know every year, but like,
[12:45] Speaker 2: wouldn't shock me if he wins two of the next four.
[12:49] Speaker 1: You know, it's a it's a you know, there's I'm
[12:53] Speaker 1: not really steeped in tradition, although I make an exception
[12:58] Speaker 1: for the Masters. I mean, Sir Geo slamming his club,
[13:01] Speaker 1: Robert McIntyre's flipping something off.
[13:04] Speaker 2: And you get that. No.
[13:06] Speaker 1: I I well, but last year the Spanish golfer Pete
[13:10] Speaker 1: in the creek.
[13:11] Speaker 2: Uh, he was like, uh, you know, he's a college kid,
[13:15] Speaker 2: didn't know the rules that he had to go.
[13:18] Speaker 1: So and I think, you know, I'm not banning anybody,
[13:23] Speaker 1: you get to life. Sergio's won before. But I do
[13:26] Speaker 1: think there's something to be said. Is you know, I'm
[13:30] Speaker 1: not somebody that again is a traditionalist in sports. I
[13:33] Speaker 1: kind of like new stuff. But I feel differently about
[13:36] Speaker 1: the Masters, Like I I like, it bothered me that
[13:39] Speaker 1: Sergio did that. I wouldn't ban him, but I don't
[13:42] Speaker 1: like it. And I just I think this is one
[13:44] Speaker 1: of the great events. I mean John. One of the
[13:47] Speaker 1: reasons I supported Live. I didn't know what Live was
[13:49] Speaker 1: gonna be. But my takeaway is I watched golf for golfers.
[13:51] Speaker 1: I don't watch it for the course or for the
[13:53] Speaker 1: brand PGA except Augusta. Now. I do like the Open
[13:58] Speaker 1: at Pebble Beach and the British is great Saint Andrews,
[14:03] Speaker 1: but it's different in Augusta. I mean it's different from
[14:05] Speaker 1: the merch, the prices, you know, Amen Corner. I do
[14:10] Speaker 1: feel like you have to sit down with like a
[14:12] Speaker 1: Sergio or a McIntyre and have strict warnings. Do you
[14:16] Speaker 1: are you kind of in that same space.
[14:18] Speaker 2: I always thought the unique part about golf is the
[14:21] Speaker 2: most expensive country club where I live in North Scottsdale.
[14:25] Speaker 2: It costs over half a million dollars to join. Rom's
[14:27] Speaker 2: a member there, Michael Phelps is they have no rules.
[14:31] Speaker 2: You could wear no shoes, you could wear Rom plays
[14:33] Speaker 2: in a T shirt all the time. You could wear
[14:35] Speaker 2: basketball shorts to the club. And there are other clubs
[14:38] Speaker 2: down the street where you if you were caught with
[14:41] Speaker 2: a cell phone on the putting green on a phone,
[14:43] Speaker 2: they don't care. If you're Jeff Bezos, They're going to
[14:46] Speaker 2: ask you to leave, and they have specific rules. You
[14:49] Speaker 2: go into Olympic Club, you go into these places in Monterey,
[14:52] Speaker 2: in la in Chicago, you take your hat off inside.
[14:56] Speaker 2: Just like if I enter your home and you say, John,
[14:59] Speaker 2: we don't wear shoes in this home. I take my
[15:00] Speaker 2: shoes off. It's your home. It's no different. A golf course.
[15:03] Speaker 2: That's the golf course, the membership of that crew, and
[15:06] Speaker 2: they have certain rules. And people say Augusta's stiffer than most. Yeah,
[15:10] Speaker 2: it's true. Yeah, And that's that's that's their rules. Just
[15:14] Speaker 2: like if you don't like it, there are super nice
[15:17] Speaker 2: courses all over America that are really expensive that have
[15:19] Speaker 2: no rules. And to me, the thing in Augusta is
[15:22] Speaker 2: the reverence that every single golfer has for it, that
[15:25] Speaker 2: would gladly follow the rules. I don't even think they're
[15:27] Speaker 2: that hard. Right, don't you gotta wear pants? Right? You
[15:31] Speaker 2: can't the ping in the creek, to me, that was
[15:34] Speaker 2: more funny, But I would. They have very strict rules
[15:37] Speaker 2: about cell phones on property, and you can argue they're
[15:41] Speaker 2: a little archaic, and I agree. I mean, you and
[15:45] Speaker 2: I were talking about last week on TV, like a
[15:47] Speaker 2: lot of people run businesses, you get phone calls, you
[15:49] Speaker 2: gotta you know you, I don't know, you got things
[15:51] Speaker 2: going on in life, like it is what it is.
[15:54] Speaker 2: But it doesn't feel like any of these are changing.
[15:57] Speaker 2: The Masters is the one place where it feels like
[15:59] Speaker 2: everyone just embraces it. Yeah, I mean think about this
[16:02] Speaker 2: when you and I were at Live and most PGA
[16:05] Speaker 2: events are like this. If you go to a driving range,
[16:08] Speaker 2: and most guys, when these golfers talk, they say, we
[16:11] Speaker 2: had a great week. I owe it to my team.
[16:13] Speaker 2: When they say their team, they're not just that's not
[16:15] Speaker 2: the catty, that's their physio, that's their putting coach. They're
[16:18] Speaker 2: chipping coach, their swing coach, their manager, their agent. These
[16:21] Speaker 2: guys all I mean, they're these guys are fifteen twenty
[16:24] Speaker 2: minimum million dollars a year businesses, some of them, like Rory,
[16:27] Speaker 2: probably one hundred million dollars a year business And at
[16:29] Speaker 2: Augusta you're allowed one person, non caddy, to come with
[16:33] Speaker 2: you when you're hitting balls. One person. It's not like
[16:36] Speaker 2: that at any of these other tournaments, any of the
[16:38] Speaker 2: other majors. So those are their rules. And you know what,
[16:42] Speaker 2: every single person, to a man that I always see
[16:44] Speaker 2: these pro golfers. They can't wait for this event. It's
[16:47] Speaker 2: why you notice, like early on when guys are struggling,
[16:51] Speaker 2: you build yourself up so much for it. You know,
[16:54] Speaker 2: Bryce to just imployes. You can feel it on his
[16:56] Speaker 2: body language, like you got to wait another year to
[16:58] Speaker 2: come back here, and like you get these opportunities and
[17:03] Speaker 2: they just lose it. Especially on Friday when you see
[17:05] Speaker 2: a guy that's going to miss the cut. Their body
[17:07] Speaker 2: language to me, is different than any other tournament because
[17:10] Speaker 2: of the gravity and the importance of this event. I
[17:14] Speaker 2: actually think this event's popularity feels like it's grown. Maybe
[17:17] Speaker 2: I think the way we consume sports now, I agree,
[17:20] Speaker 2: it feels really I mean I always just at a
[17:22] Speaker 2: family event. I'm back home, we had I had aunts, uncles.
[17:26] Speaker 2: I mean, everyone's watched it talking Rory Rory, Rory just
[17:30] Speaker 2: blocked in on the course. I don't know if that's
[17:32] Speaker 2: happening non Tiger five year, ten years ago.
[17:35] Speaker 1: I mean, even the wn WNBA, even the WNBA is
[17:39] Speaker 1: on like six networks. I mean, it's everywhere, all the strange.
[17:42] Speaker 1: Everything is getting broader and wider, and there's very few
[17:45] Speaker 1: things that I know are always going to be there
[17:48] Speaker 1: NFL games at ten am Pacific and one pm Pacific,
[17:52] Speaker 1: and the Masters on CBS on Saturday. On Sunday, there's
[17:56] Speaker 1: very few things that aren't up for grabs. Else is
[18:00] Speaker 1: I mean even second tier leagues. The WNBA is certainly
[18:03] Speaker 1: not wildly profitable pre Caitlin Clark, it wasn't. It's on,
[18:07] Speaker 1: It's got all multiple platforms, it's on, everything's spread around everywhere.
[18:11] Speaker 1: I thought Amazon did a pretty good job on coverage,
[18:15] Speaker 1: but overall, it's uh, you know, I'm just ready I
[18:20] Speaker 1: find myself. I I remember the Masters where special players won.
[18:28] Speaker 1: You know, the Rory's the Tigers last win was really
[18:32] Speaker 1: super emotional when he was out of his prime, Phil
[18:35] Speaker 1: winning three. Today's show is brought to you by our

[20:05] Speaker 1: Gambling problem called one eight hundred Gambler Arizona, Colorado, Illinois,
[20:09] Speaker 1: New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia. So, I one of the
[20:17] Speaker 1: things I want to pivot to, and I'm not gonna
[20:19] Speaker 1: I don't know how much. One of the great things
[20:20] Speaker 1: about being on a podcast I can talk about what
[20:22] Speaker 1: I want and I don't have time restrictions. But one
[20:26] Speaker 1: of the things I've noticed about the Mike Vrabel Diana
[20:29] Speaker 1: Russini story is and I haven't discussed it yet, and
[20:35] Speaker 1: I think sometimes consumers are like, well, why isn't mainstream
[20:40] Speaker 1: media discussing it. Well, it's interesting because in my world
[20:46] Speaker 1: there's moral and then there's ethical morals personal. You know,
[20:52] Speaker 1: if you lie to me, or I lie to you
[20:54] Speaker 1: about something, or you lie to your wife about something.
[20:56] Speaker 1: I lied to my kids about something, that's a moral
[20:59] Speaker 1: that's a person. No issue. Ethical is about it's on
[21:02] Speaker 1: the outside. It's standards. Fox and iHeart have standards. The
[21:05] Speaker 1: New York Times has ethical standards. I've never had a
[21:09] Speaker 1: moral clause. I've had fifteen contract I've never had a
[21:13] Speaker 1: moral clause.
[21:15] Speaker 2: I have one in the volume. I I didn't check
[21:17] Speaker 2: the contract. No, you do not.
[21:19] Speaker 1: I don't think you have an ethical one at the
[21:21] Speaker 1: volume either. And football coaches don't have ethical clauses. Journalists
[21:26] Speaker 1: have ethical clauses. Broadcasters have ethical clauses. People tend to
[21:30] Speaker 1: some people think moral ethical, it's the same. Ethical is
[21:34] Speaker 1: is external. You know it's a company. It's a code
[21:37] Speaker 1: of conduct, morals personal. Football coaches don't you know if
[21:41] Speaker 1: you're winning in the NFL as a football coach, and
[21:43] Speaker 1: Raybel took a team to the Super Bowl who had
[21:45] Speaker 1: no business, that had no business being the Super Bowl.
[21:48] Speaker 1: If these allegations, all we have is pictures, I have
[21:52] Speaker 1: two subjects. I don't have two sources. And the more
[21:54] Speaker 1: serious the story is, I need two sources, just pictures. Right,
[21:59] Speaker 1: So it's just a moral issue. If the allegations are true.
[22:05] Speaker 1: With Diana, it's moral and ethical because she has in
[22:08] Speaker 1: her contract there are standards and procedures from the New
[22:12] Speaker 1: York Times. I mean they fired Jason Blair was a reporter.
[22:15] Speaker 1: I remember that fifteen twenty years ago. Whenever that was so,
[22:18] Speaker 1: I think the audience is like, well, why don't you
[22:20] Speaker 1: why don't you talk about I don't talk about moral stuff.
[22:22] Speaker 1: I've said this for thirty three years. On the end,
[22:25] Speaker 1: I'm not a moralist. What you do in your personal
[22:27] Speaker 1: life is and people come up to me, I'm not
[22:32] Speaker 1: a Christian. I'm more agnostic. Your morals aren't mine, by
[22:35] Speaker 1: the way, my morals aren't yours. But we both live
[22:38] Speaker 1: by the same ethical standards if we work at a
[22:41] Speaker 1: journalism you know, the Times and so. And I've just
[22:45] Speaker 1: never I've made it a practice in my life is
[22:47] Speaker 1: I don't talk about the moral stuff. I mean, by
[22:49] Speaker 1: the way TMZH, which covers a much broader spectrum of
[22:55] Speaker 1: stories than I do. They don't do They will tell
[22:58] Speaker 1: you they don't do marriage policing. They stay out of affairs.
[23:03] Speaker 1: They just stay And that's TMZ. That's Hollywood because everybody's
[23:06] Speaker 1: having them, so they stay out of them. So I
[23:09] Speaker 1: guess what I'm trying to tell people is, don't confuse
[23:13] Speaker 1: moral and ethical. Diana's in a space where it's moral
[23:17] Speaker 1: and ethical. Mike's is moral, and again these are allegations.
[23:20] Speaker 1: That's the other reason I don't talk about it, but
[23:22] Speaker 1: I do want to create or provide clarity on that.
[23:25] Speaker 1: When you say, well, why doesn't the mainstream I don't
[23:27] Speaker 1: think mainstream broadcasters writers talk about moral stuff. If it
[23:32] Speaker 1: becomes ethical, if a reporter gets fired for this, then
[23:38] Speaker 1: that means the New York Times discovered ethical breaches. Therefore,
[23:44] Speaker 1: the mainstream media comes in to discuss they have evidence
[23:49] Speaker 1: therefore of an ethical lapse. So I'm supporting the mainstream media.
[23:54] Speaker 1: That's one thing. If you're a podcaster with you know,
[23:56] Speaker 1: a small following, a blogger, you know you're latitude on
[24:00] Speaker 1: this stuff. You talk about what you want when you want.
[24:02] Speaker 1: But for the main for the major media players, mostly
[24:07] Speaker 1: we wait for an ethical breach which is confirmed by
[24:11] Speaker 1: an employer to discuss.
[24:15] Speaker 2: Well, I would say by this point, every single person
[24:19] Speaker 2: agrees the pictures that we saw. Once you figure out
[24:23] Speaker 2: the resort, I've never I've lived in Arizona now five
[24:25] Speaker 2: you've never been to Sedona. It is a place that
[24:27] Speaker 2: resort honeymoons, baby moons, aniversaries. It's a couple's it looks bad.
[24:32] Speaker 2: You're holding hands, everyone assumes, especially if you show that
[24:35] Speaker 2: to your wife. I show that to my wife. My
[24:37] Speaker 2: wife wouldn't have been able to point Diana Orsini out
[24:39] Speaker 2: of a lineup. If I say, hey, this is the
[24:40] Speaker 2: Patriot coach and I show her the pictures sho out
[24:43] Speaker 2: They're probably sleeping together on a date or whatever. We
[24:46] Speaker 2: all agree there one thing. I get a lot, and
[24:49] Speaker 2: I get a lot of dms of like you know,
[24:50] Speaker 2: and you see this on the internet. I got one
[24:53] Speaker 2: today like, well, he's not being covered like Sharon Moore. Well,
[24:57] Speaker 2: Sharon Moore was having sex with anim eployee that worked
[25:01] Speaker 2: for him. This they don't work together. But you just
[25:04] Speaker 2: see all these different takes of why aren't this right?
[25:06] Speaker 2: Mike Rabel's job. Robert Kraft went into a massage parlor
[25:12] Speaker 2: the day of the AFC Championship game in Palm Beach
[25:15] Speaker 2: and had to fly to Kansas City and got caught.
[25:18] Speaker 2: The Patriot look at Belichick's off the field anti They
[25:21] Speaker 2: do not care. His job is to win games. If
[25:23] Speaker 2: he didn't need to be fired. If he does, he
[25:25] Speaker 2: keeps his job. Her job, like you said, is more,
[25:28] Speaker 2: you know, tied around to getting these sources, and if
[25:31] Speaker 2: you're sleeping with the sorts. I'm not a journalist. I
[25:33] Speaker 2: don't know the rules. But clearly the New York Times
[25:35] Speaker 2: feels like she's gonna get fired now.
[25:36] Speaker 1: Right, Okay? Well, and also the Boston Celtics fire a
[25:39] Speaker 1: coach because of lapses moral slash ethical with somebody a
[25:46] Speaker 1: partner in the building. So that's that's that's that's that's
[25:50] Speaker 1: that's like the Michigan situation. That that that's what got
[25:55] Speaker 1: the Celtics coach fired. The it's not if you come
[25:57] Speaker 1: into it with a clear mind and without a j
[26:00] Speaker 1: to because even my wife asked why does he get
[26:02] Speaker 1: a pass and why doesn't she? And I said, well,
[26:04] Speaker 1: there are standards and practices ethically that you in your
[26:07] Speaker 1: contract as a journalist. Football coaches you win. There's there's
[26:12] Speaker 1: no it's a moral issue and there's no moral clause
[26:15] Speaker 1: in contracts.
[26:16] Speaker 2: Well, I know the other thing. I always say this
[26:18] Speaker 2: about relationships and the older I've gotten. You know, I've
[26:22] Speaker 2: had friends get divorced. I see friends in relationships. I
[26:25] Speaker 2: my marriage. Like most people, we have unwritten rules. Like baseball,
[26:29] Speaker 2: you gotta know what's allowed, you know what's not allowed.
[26:32] Speaker 2: But I've and you're you've been around longer in me
[26:34] Speaker 2: and seen different relationships. There are a lot of people
[26:37] Speaker 2: in relationships that would not fly in my home. I
[26:40] Speaker 2: never assume other people are in whatever their marriage is
[26:45] Speaker 2: allowed to do. You never know, and I and I
[26:48] Speaker 2: I don't care and I don't want to know, and
[26:51] Speaker 2: it's none of my business.
[26:52] Speaker 1: And I just I'm not into that stuff, like I
[26:55] Speaker 1: just I've always been one of those guys. There's I
[26:57] Speaker 1: don't talk about media much. Some hosts and podcast I
[27:00] Speaker 1: don't they that some people specialize in it. I don't.
[27:03] Speaker 1: I also don't talk about moral obligations. I don't talk
[27:07] Speaker 1: about that either. I think there is you know I
[27:11] Speaker 1: and if people want to do it, go for it.
[27:13] Speaker 1: But I'm just I got pictures. I don't have sourcing
[27:19] Speaker 1: on this.
[27:19] Speaker 2: Why. I think why? And I don't know. I was
[27:21] Speaker 2: at a family event trying to watch the Masters. I
[27:24] Speaker 2: did see something come across like pop up on my phone,
[27:27] Speaker 2: Mike Vrabel. Because every coach or GM, A lot of
[27:31] Speaker 2: teams have the coach in GM. The NFL is great
[27:34] Speaker 2: about this, right. They make us speak of the combine
[27:35] Speaker 2: they make a speak at the owners meetings, then you're
[27:37] Speaker 2: mandatory to speak again before the draft, and then during
[27:39] Speaker 2: the draft and after the draft, keep that cycle going.
[27:42] Speaker 2: He is not going to speak. I think they're gonna
[27:45] Speaker 2: put Elliott Wolf. Typically, I would imagine Mike and Elliott
[27:48] Speaker 2: would both speak before the draft. Clearly, they're not putting
[27:51] Speaker 2: him out there in this situation because no one would
[27:54] Speaker 2: ask them what they're gonna do with the thirty first
[27:56] Speaker 2: pick in the draft. He would just get inundated. Wolf
[28:00] Speaker 2: is gonna get asked about this question, right, It's gonna
[28:03] Speaker 2: be a story. It's it's not gonna go away, especially
[28:06] Speaker 2: if you know by all accounts, she's been sidelined and listen,
[28:09] Speaker 2: I said this on my podcast because I like this
[28:12] Speaker 2: stuff probably more than you do. But also like listen,
[28:15] Speaker 2: she's always been cool to me. I like her, like
[28:17] Speaker 2: I don't know or it's not like I listen, I
[28:20] Speaker 2: don't know Vrabel, But it's all I think we all
[28:22] Speaker 2: agree what we're seeing, what's going down. Probably, but like
[28:26] Speaker 2: you said, like what they're not what's the outcome of this? Okay,
[28:30] Speaker 2: they're cheating on their husbands and wives? Like okay, what
[28:33] Speaker 2: what's what? Do you like? Yeah, but and she's breaking
[28:36] Speaker 2: stories that what that he's gonna cut some guy? That
[28:40] Speaker 2: story comes out anyway. Edi Trauss has been on this forever,
[28:42] Speaker 2: these newsbreakers, This news exists no matter whether they exist
[28:46] Speaker 2: or not. Right if I trade tomorrow Patrick Mahomes and
[28:50] Speaker 2: I break the story or nobody breaks the story and
[28:53] Speaker 2: the Kandissy just post, we just trade pat the events
[28:56] Speaker 2: happening no matter what. So a lot of stuff that
[28:59] Speaker 2: these insiders now get, you know, do beside the news
[29:03] Speaker 2: is well, they're weighing these options. Then it becomes newsworthy,
[29:07] Speaker 2: but it's not. Actually it's just kind of getting leaked
[29:09] Speaker 2: to see.
[29:10] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[29:10] Speaker 2: I always think that's kind of stupid. You know when
[29:14] Speaker 2: teams use the media to do stuff and put stuff
[29:17] Speaker 2: out there. And we talked about this with the Jets
[29:19] Speaker 2: with David Bailey. It's like you're either going to get
[29:21] Speaker 2: it right or wrong, and that's where you're going to
[29:23] Speaker 2: be judged on playing the media game. You know who
[29:25] Speaker 2: doesn't do that, Sean McVay, Andy Reid, Kyle Shanahan. They
[29:28] Speaker 2: don't waste time on that. So I think we make
[29:30] Speaker 2: a big deal of it. But I just think her role,
[29:33] Speaker 2: like I get where women are like, what the hell
[29:37] Speaker 2: you make If I'm doing it the right way is
[29:39] Speaker 2: this would be pissed off. But this notion that Mike Rabel,
[29:43] Speaker 2: Mike Rabel's job is look at the guy he has.
[29:46] Speaker 2: I guess he technically didn't replace Belichick, but he kind
[29:48] Speaker 2: of did. Yeah, moral ethically, Belichick no standards. His job
[29:52] Speaker 2: was to win and win big, and that's all that
[29:53] Speaker 2: matters in the end. That's what they're employed to do.
[29:55] Speaker 1: And people could say, well, what about Spygate, that's an
[29:57] Speaker 1: ethical lapse their standards in pursuit that you can't tape
[30:01] Speaker 1: deflate gate ethical not moral? Moral is personal? Ethical?
[30:06] Speaker 2: Outy Gate with Sean Payton ethical, right.
[30:09] Speaker 1: That's ethical. So and well, they're the same, They're not
[30:13] Speaker 1: the same. I stay out of I'm not I don't
[30:16] Speaker 1: do moral morality police it's it's and you can criticize
[30:20] Speaker 1: me for that. And I I have two things on
[30:22] Speaker 1: the top of my head right now that I know
[30:25] Speaker 1: morally about high profile people. They're not elected officials. I
[30:33] Speaker 1: just consider it no in my business. And I just
[30:36] Speaker 1: saw I'm not going to talk about it. I'll go
[30:37] Speaker 1: to my gray with it. I don't care. I'm not
[30:39] Speaker 1: real nosy that way. I don't care. So there you go.
[30:43] Speaker 2: All right.
[30:43] Speaker 1: So the NFL Draft, we're about ten eleven days out,
[30:49] Speaker 1: came up fast, it did. The big question in the
[30:55] Speaker 1: draft is what do the Jets do with number two.
[30:58] Speaker 1: I think they're far more int things because it doesn't
[31:01] Speaker 1: matter who the Jets are gonna draft, they're gonna be awful.
[31:04] Speaker 1: I'm fascinated to see if the Raiders trade up to
[31:07] Speaker 1: get Omar Cooper at the top of the second or
[31:09] Speaker 1: does he fall to them. Because if I was the
[31:11] Speaker 1: Raiders and I could get Omar Cooper, the hoo's your
[31:13] Speaker 1: wide receiver, the favorite target of Fernando Mendoza, that would
[31:18] Speaker 1: be my pick quarterback wide receiver. This is what like
[31:22] Speaker 1: a McVeigh does, or you know, I mean when Shanahan
[31:26] Speaker 1: gets Brock Purty. They do everything they can to add
[31:28] Speaker 1: more offensive elements. I think they overdraft wide receivers, but
[31:31] Speaker 1: they're doing it for a point. Let's help. Let's help
[31:34] Speaker 1: our young quarterback Ben Johnson. Let's get Drew Dolman, Let's
[31:37] Speaker 1: get Jonah Jackson, Let's get Joe Toney. Let's draft Luther Burden.
[31:42] Speaker 1: That's the way to do it, and so I think
[31:43] Speaker 1: John's Bytech the GM and Clint Kubiak. My take is
[31:47] Speaker 1: they're going to go get a tackle. They need to
[31:49] Speaker 1: right tackle. They drafted a kid a couple of years ago,
[31:51] Speaker 1: third round. He can play in or out. He's okay.
[31:55] Speaker 1: My take is I would just go quarterback, receiver, tackle.
[31:58] Speaker 1: Then if you have defensive needs, go for it. Just
[32:01] Speaker 1: make sure you get the quarterback right. That's fascinating. I think.
[32:03] Speaker 1: I think what the Dolphins have with four third round picks.
[32:06] Speaker 1: Do they move up in the first round, give up
[32:08] Speaker 1: a third round pick because a lot of teams want
[32:09] Speaker 1: to move down. John, I could see the Dolphins saying, hey, man,
[32:13] Speaker 1: we got you know, if Jeremiah loves available at the
[32:16] Speaker 1: sixth pick, and they're like, well, okay, we don't need
[32:18] Speaker 1: a running back. Let's say let's say you know they
[32:22] Speaker 1: have a defensive coach, Jeff Hafley, and they're worried about
[32:25] Speaker 1: Caleb Downs. I can see them saying it, like number nine,
[32:28] Speaker 1: we're gonna get the best safety in the draft. Move
[32:30] Speaker 1: I don't know, if you move up for a safety,
[32:32] Speaker 1: is there a team in particular that you that that
[32:34] Speaker 1: really interest you on draft Day?
[32:36] Speaker 2: I think the Chiefs because all these teams with two
[32:38] Speaker 2: first round picks are bad teams, right. The Browns are
[32:42] Speaker 2: not going to win any games next year, The Jets
[32:44] Speaker 2: are going to be bad. The Dolphins are literally trying
[32:46] Speaker 2: to reset this thing, and ideally like they would sign
[32:49] Speaker 2: up right now to be have the number one pick
[32:51] Speaker 2: next year, even though they might like this quarterback is
[32:54] Speaker 2: being Malik Willis. I think the Chiefs could do a
[32:56] Speaker 2: lot of different things. I think if they love Sonny Stock,
[33:00] Speaker 2: they could trade on it, or you know, pick a
[33:02] Speaker 2: player that they like. It's not going to be here
[33:04] Speaker 2: at nine, but we could move up. The Giants, Hey,
[33:07] Speaker 2: you need a lot, John, you want to keep, you know,
[33:10] Speaker 2: build around your own guys. You want to go from
[33:12] Speaker 2: five to nine, We'll throw in a second round pick
[33:14] Speaker 2: we got to first, right or whatever it would cost.
[33:19] Speaker 2: And they are a team that if they come out
[33:20] Speaker 2: of the first round, like, there's a decent chance to
[33:22] Speaker 2: me they could stick at nine, trade up from twenty nine, because,
[33:26] Speaker 2: like you said, a lot of teams want to go back,
[33:28] Speaker 2: but not a lot of teams want to come up.
[33:30] Speaker 2: But how many teams, like the Chiefs are kind of
[33:33] Speaker 2: truly every year kind of put all their chips in
[33:35] Speaker 2: the middle of the table right now because coach Reeve's
[33:37] Speaker 2: getting older. Like, to me, you get from twenty nine
[33:40] Speaker 2: into the teams because all these teams would love to
[33:42] Speaker 2: come down. You know, this draft is pretty polarizing in
[33:45] Speaker 2: the sense that it's not viewed as great right there.
[33:49] Speaker 2: There are a lot of players, like the best wide receiver.
[33:52] Speaker 2: It's not exactly Jamar Chase.
[33:54] Speaker 1: No, it's like like at running back, a tight end,
[33:57] Speaker 1: it's week. It's a week.
[33:59] Speaker 2: Draft told me it's the worst they've been in the
[34:01] Speaker 2: league almost eighteen twenty years. The worst running back class
[34:04] Speaker 2: they've ever seen. Yeah, by far. And they say centers
[34:08] Speaker 2: and guards now are very hit or miss because all
[34:10] Speaker 2: these guys are transferring that centers and guards. When I
[34:13] Speaker 2: was gotten football, even I remember in high school recruiting
[34:17] Speaker 2: you could find those guys, develop them. In the NFL.
[34:20] Speaker 2: You'd be like, oh, just wait to the fourth, fifth,
[34:21] Speaker 2: sixth round, We'll draft a guard and a center, and
[34:23] Speaker 2: one of those two guys will eventually become a pro bowler.
[34:26] Speaker 2: Now you're terrified. You get to the third day, You're like,
[34:28] Speaker 2: there's not even a guy on our board that we
[34:30] Speaker 2: think is draft worthy. So I think the thing has
[34:33] Speaker 2: the nil has reshaped college football. I think for the better.
[34:37] Speaker 2: It's made it more interesting. It's really impacted the depth
[34:40] Speaker 2: of draft, you know, because top end guys. If I'm
[34:44] Speaker 2: on the fence, right, it's like I could be a
[34:46] Speaker 2: first rounder. Well, sometimes those guys as the combine happens
[34:49] Speaker 2: as the draft, pro Day and pre draft workouts, that
[34:52] Speaker 2: guy goes from pick thirty two to fifteen, right, he
[34:55] Speaker 2: kind of rises. Well, that guy stayed at Ohio State.
[34:57] Speaker 2: That guy state at Oregon for a lot of money.
[35:00] Speaker 2: Dante Moore ten years ago, it's like you could you
[35:03] Speaker 2: can't pass being the second overall pick. You might get injured.
[35:06] Speaker 2: Now it's like, well, I'll just go back to school
[35:08] Speaker 2: for five six million dollars. I've made five six million
[35:10] Speaker 2: dollars last couple of years and having a blast, like
[35:13] Speaker 2: I don't need to come out. So there's been this
[35:15] Speaker 2: huge trick, you know, kind of domino effect from the
[35:18] Speaker 2: first round to me through the third day. And I
[35:21] Speaker 2: think all these teams are still kind of there's a
[35:23] Speaker 2: feeling out process of how do we handle big picture
[35:28] Speaker 2: next year? Like, dude, are some of the top players
[35:30] Speaker 2: getting pushed back next year. But can you ever rely
[35:34] Speaker 2: on that because our guy's going to keep going back
[35:37] Speaker 2: to school. I think teams are still there's like these
[35:40] Speaker 2: last couple of years that they're really feeling out the
[35:43] Speaker 2: nil landscape. The good part for him is I know
[35:46] Speaker 2: how the guy handles money, because if you tell me, right, yeah,
[35:49] Speaker 2: this guy was just making you know, the last two years,
[35:52] Speaker 2: he made about two million dollars total, didn't miss a workout.
[35:55] Speaker 2: First guy there treats everyone exactly the same as when
[35:59] Speaker 2: we met him inhigh school. You're like, that's a high character.
[36:01] Speaker 2: You feel good about it. Were the number one question
[36:03] Speaker 2: I remember when I got in the NFL and up
[36:05] Speaker 2: through like the last four or five years, like how
[36:07] Speaker 2: will this guy handle money? Because it's one thing to
[36:09] Speaker 2: get a bag with ten k cash in it, it's
[36:11] Speaker 2: another thing to get direct deposits every two weeks at
[36:16] Speaker 2: enormous numbers. When you're just like the starting right tackle,
[36:19] Speaker 2: you know, the guy I would make nine hundred grant.
[36:22] Speaker 2: You know the money these football players, I mean the roster.
[36:24] Speaker 2: I think some fans you're telling me this roster's forty
[36:27] Speaker 2: million dollars, Like, yeah, this roster's forty million. This is
[36:30] Speaker 2: Ohio State. They are paying twenty two stars. They say,
[36:33] Speaker 2: some of these backups because they're five stars.
[36:35] Speaker 1: Jermaine Smith, the wide receiver next year at Ohio State.
[36:37] Speaker 1: I saw a story over the weekend. Is he going
[36:40] Speaker 1: to get ten million dollars?
[36:41] Speaker 2: Now?
[36:41] Speaker 1: I Ohio State's got so much depth at that position.
[36:44] Speaker 1: I'd never pay a wide receiver over like three. Like
[36:47] Speaker 1: I thought three was the number, the big number that
[36:50] Speaker 1: a couple top receivers could get. But yeah, an Ohio
[36:55] Speaker 1: State recruits that position so well, I doubt they'd pay that.
[36:57] Speaker 2: But but even like this, this drafts good exis sample
[37:00] Speaker 2: the top tackles all played right tackle in college interview
[37:04] Speaker 2: is like solid players and they'd be starters historically. I
[37:06] Speaker 2: think those guys grow in the twenties. But in this draft,
[37:09] Speaker 2: it's like I think Bane Well, I mean it's probably
[37:12] Speaker 2: on tape is the best pass rusher, but he's six'
[37:15] Speaker 2: to one with short arms right just on tape like
[37:18] Speaker 2: he was the most dominant.
[37:19] Speaker 1: Guy you, Know, JOHN I i Think i've talked about,
[37:22] Speaker 1: THIS i think before another. PODCAST i don't think there's
[37:25] Speaker 1: as much football talent In. AMERICA i think the quality
[37:28] Speaker 1: of college football because the teams are older is, better
[37:31] Speaker 1: but the depth in terms of. TALENT i, mean we
[37:33] Speaker 1: were talking about this during THE cte. Discussions a lot
[37:37] Speaker 1: of moms didn't want their sons to play. FOOTBALL i,
[37:40] Speaker 1: MEAN i have a friend IN, la big football. Fan
[37:43] Speaker 1: his son played quarterback in you, Know west of the
[37:46] Speaker 1: FOUR h five as they say In. La and like he,
[37:49] Speaker 1: said everybody in my community is, like you let your
[37:51] Speaker 1: kids play. Football you, know you go you go to
[37:54] Speaker 1: some of these blue states and blue, cities like we
[37:56] Speaker 1: don't let our kids play. Football AND i was like,
[37:58] Speaker 1: really and he's, like oh, Yeah he's, like you, know
[38:01] Speaker 1: it's just. There it's, harder fewer kids are trying out for,
[38:07] Speaker 1: it and it'll always be big in The south And
[38:10] Speaker 1: texas and parts of the. Country BUT i do Think
[38:14] Speaker 1: i've noticed it this year is a great. EXAMPLE i
[38:16] Speaker 1: talked about this four or five years. AGO i noticed
[38:18] Speaker 1: it in Southern. California the whole state Of. California if
[38:22] Speaker 1: you looked at high school football, recruiting the state Of
[38:24] Speaker 1: california would have like there's thirty eight million, people it
[38:28] Speaker 1: would have two elite running, backs two like four star.
[38:31] Speaker 1: Guys sometimes you wouldn't have and there'd be a few
[38:34] Speaker 1: other good, backs but like wide, receiver you'd have seventeen
[38:39] Speaker 1: guys that were five or four star. Gucks running, back
[38:42] Speaker 1: you'd have like, one maybe, two like in the state
[38:46] Speaker 1: Of california if you went on three year, rivals you,
[38:49] Speaker 1: know the recruiting. Sites AND i was noticing this and the,
[38:52] Speaker 1: kids they know where the money's. At it's at, quarterback
[38:55] Speaker 1: it's at star wide, receiver it's at pass, rusher it's
[38:58] Speaker 1: at great, corner it's it's not at running. Back so
[39:02] Speaker 1: young people have always determined like trends and whether whether
[39:06] Speaker 1: it's you, know the revival Of, puma you, know you,
[39:10] Speaker 1: know the shoe. Brand, yeah and so kids like you,
[39:13] Speaker 1: know they're not, dopes they don't want to play running.
[39:15] Speaker 1: Back SO i think it's a and increasingly in THE, nfl,
[39:19] Speaker 1: you'll you'll it's hard to get that second contract if
[39:22] Speaker 1: you're a running. Back so it's a you, know football
[39:24] Speaker 1: is getting more three out and four out and that's
[39:28] Speaker 1: just the reality of the.
[39:28] Speaker 2: Sport well that's WHY i, think you, know in this,
[39:32] Speaker 2: draft one guy did is just you, Know, historically, linebackers
[39:38] Speaker 2: middle linebackers were not viewed as left. Tackles pass rushers
[39:42] Speaker 2: obviously quarterbacks or even wide. Receivers if you told, ME
[39:46] Speaker 2: i could Get Fred warner on my, theme Or brian
[39:49] Speaker 2: Er lacker Or Justin. JEFFERSON i Think Justin. Jefferson you,
[39:54] Speaker 2: know if your quarterback g's, hurt it's hard for him
[39:56] Speaker 2: to get five touches a. Game we saw WITH jj,
[39:58] Speaker 2: McCarthy and even if he is, humming he's touching the
[40:01] Speaker 2: ball ten times a, game eleven times a. Game you
[40:04] Speaker 2: get a top linebacker in this league that's spread, out
[40:07] Speaker 2: it's sidelined to, sideline and they cover the tight ends
[40:11] Speaker 2: and the running. Backs all the running backs now can,
[40:13] Speaker 2: catch and look how good most team's tight ends. Are
[40:16] Speaker 2: so the value of a middle linebacker is not just
[40:19] Speaker 2: stuffing the a gap making a. Tackle, now it's playing
[40:22] Speaker 2: sideline to sideline and getting fifteen plus tackles and covering
[40:27] Speaker 2: sometimes the best weapon on the other team all the
[40:30] Speaker 2: time in the Bat like to, me A Sunny styles.
[40:32] Speaker 2: Hits his impact is immense at you, know stand up
[40:37] Speaker 2: linebacker and the versatility that. Brings AND i think sometimes
[40:41] Speaker 2: we don't value that, position AND i think it's stupid
[40:44] Speaker 2: in this day and age where everyone's Running Kyle shanahan's. Offense,
[40:47] Speaker 2: well What's Kyle shannan's. Offense you tell the running back
[40:50] Speaker 2: to just run at the right or left tackle and
[40:53] Speaker 2: then just pick a. Lane, well who's the guy figuring
[40:55] Speaker 2: out how to tackle the middle? Linebacker you, know he's
[40:58] Speaker 2: the guy making all the tackles in The shanahan and
[41:00] Speaker 2: against The shanahan running. Scheme that literally it feels like
[41:04] Speaker 2: eighty percent of the team's run. Now SO i Think
[41:07] Speaker 2: Sonny styles is a guy that six by four. Four
[41:11] Speaker 2: he's only been playing the position now for a couple of.
[41:13] Speaker 2: Years he was just taught by AN nfl. COORDINATOR i
[41:17] Speaker 2: think his impact could be just immense by whoever gets
[41:21] Speaker 2: him and go down is, like, damn how did that
[41:23] Speaker 2: guy fall to? Seven you, know if he's the he
[41:25] Speaker 2: could be the best player in the.
