Colin is joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” to break down the NFL conference championship games. They start with the Seahawks beating the Rams in a heavyweight fight style shootout and Colin highlights the special teams lapses by the Rams as the reasons Seattle won the game (2:00). They give huge credit to Sam Darnold for two outstanding back-to-back seasons resulting in a Super Bowl appearance and being the winningest quarterback in the league since he took over for the Vikings (8:45). Colin argues that the NFC was the superior conference all year and points to the Rams roster that lost as evidence (28:45). They move to the Patriots beating the Broncos 10-7 in a blizzard and Colin argues the game was useless once the weather started (32:45). They agree that Sean Payton made a huge mistake not kicking a chip shot field goal in the first half to go up 10-0. Colin argues that if Bo Nix plays, Denver wins the game (41:00). Finally, they discuss the hire of Mike McCarthy as the head coach of the Pittsburgh Steelers (47:00). (Timestamps may vary based on advertisements.) [0:01] Speaker 1: The volume. Christian Gonzalez is the Louisiana Hot Sauce player
[0:07] Speaker 1: of the week. He had a sack and a pick
[0:09] Speaker 1: in the Patriots ten to seven. Ugly went over the
[0:11] Speaker 1: Broncos Christians interception ice the game for New England. The
[0:14] Speaker 1: original Louisiana Hot Sauce is the perfect balance of peppers
[0:17] Speaker 1: and vinegar and salt. I love it on your wings,
[0:20] Speaker 1: your nachos, your burgers, hit any tailgate food with a bold,
[0:23] Speaker 1: handcrafted flavor of the original Louisiana Hot Sauce. That's Louisiana Hot.
[0:27] Speaker 1: Buy you some, all right. Welcome in Sunday Night. Two
[0:36] Speaker 1: games one a top fiver of all time I think
[0:39] Speaker 1: I've seen in the NFL. And there are just so
[0:42] Speaker 1: many storylines. Sam Darnold, Doubters, not much left. He was sensational.
[0:50] Speaker 1: So was Matt Stafford. Seattle beats the Rams thirty one
[0:53] Speaker 1: twenty seven. Listen all year long for the Rams specialtymes.
[1:01] Speaker 1: They had the fumble, their corners were a problem again.
[1:07] Speaker 1: They got down into the red zone fourth and four,
[1:09] Speaker 1: couldn't convert. And when you when you talk about a
[1:11] Speaker 1: game of this magnitude, John and we were watching a
[1:15] Speaker 1: heavyweight fight I mean, I mean, I grew up with
[1:17] Speaker 1: a lean Fraser. You know, some grew up with the
[1:21] Speaker 1: Diaz and Connor McGregor, like whatever you grew up with.
[1:25] Speaker 1: This thing was just like bombs away. But there's just
[1:29] Speaker 1: these moments and that fourth and four I thought that.
[1:32] Speaker 1: I thought the Matt Stafford drive where they didn't get anything,
[1:35] Speaker 1: where he one time he ran for a first down,
[1:38] Speaker 1: I think the first time all year he ran for
[1:39] Speaker 1: a first time. Then he did the pitch to Pooka.
[1:41] Speaker 1: I thought it was one of the best Sam, one
[1:43] Speaker 1: of the best Matt Stafford drives I've seen this year.
[1:46] Speaker 1: I thought he. I mean, Seattle's defense is one thing.
[1:49] Speaker 1: Seattle's defense in Seattle when you can't hear yourself, I
[1:53] Speaker 1: can't hear myself think through the television. So I feel
[1:58] Speaker 1: bad that anybody law I know, Oh it's a cliche.
[2:00] Speaker 1: I feel bad for the Rams. They just we knew
[2:03] Speaker 1: it going in.
[2:04] Speaker 2: John.
[2:04] Speaker 1: We had talked about it last week. Seattle special teams
[2:08] Speaker 1: are excellent. The Rams about every other game, the special
[2:13] Speaker 1: teams cost the Rams. And that that fumble was it.
[2:18] Speaker 2: To me if you told me at the beginning of
[2:20] Speaker 2: the day that Sam Darnold is gonna throw three touchdowns
[2:24] Speaker 2: and almost throw for three hundred and fifty yards. I
[2:26] Speaker 2: would have said Seattle won this game by fifteen points. So,
[2:29] Speaker 2: I mean, that is not the formula typically they play.
[2:32] Speaker 2: So if you're gonna give up that many yards to
[2:34] Speaker 2: Sam who obviously had one of the best games of
[2:36] Speaker 2: his career, if not, I mean it might be the
[2:37] Speaker 2: best game of his career when you factor in the
[2:39] Speaker 2: importance of it. Seattle's is not going to lose when
[2:42] Speaker 2: he's going to be that efficient and that good. Like
[2:46] Speaker 2: you said, I mean, if you look at those two plays,
[2:48] Speaker 2: I think the third and four and then the fourth
[2:50] Speaker 2: and four of that Stafford drive, they want to go
[2:53] Speaker 2: to DeVante, he doesn't pull the trigger. I think he
[2:56] Speaker 2: just got to go down swinging and give the guy
[2:58] Speaker 2: a chance. He had been awesome game. I bet if
[3:00] Speaker 2: Stafford could say, I wish I just would have thrown
[3:03] Speaker 2: in his way and just gave him a fifty to
[3:04] Speaker 2: fifty ball because he ends up holding onto the ball,
[3:06] Speaker 2: throws in the back of the end zone. Then obviously
[3:08] Speaker 2: the fourth down play. But yeah, I mean it's just Seattle.
[3:12] Speaker 2: Seattle's defense wasn't as dominant. I mean, yeah, they're not
[3:15] Speaker 2: playing the banged up Niners. So this is the best
[3:18] Speaker 2: offense in the league. Statistically, it's Stafford's Hall of Fame
[3:21] Speaker 2: guy looks fantastic. Pooka obviously plays really well against the Rams.
[3:27] Speaker 2: DeVante was making plays, those two guys humming like they
[3:30] Speaker 2: were then backs making plays. I mean, it was, like
[3:33] Speaker 2: you said, it was just a really really high level
[3:37] Speaker 2: game by both the offenses.
[3:39] Speaker 1: Well, you have arguably the best pocket passer in the league,
[3:43] Speaker 1: probably the best pure pocket passer without Mobiley Stafford, arguably
[3:47] Speaker 1: the best coach, the deepest tight end group, two excellent
[3:50] Speaker 1: running backs, both by the way, can catch. The best
[3:55] Speaker 1: receiver right now is either JSN or Pooka. Certainly in
[4:00] Speaker 1: the postseason the Ram.
[4:01] Speaker 2: Who combined for those two combined for three hundred yards
[4:04] Speaker 2: and a touchdown each. Jackson Smith and Puka. I mean,
[4:08] Speaker 2: that's like Jerry Rice meets Michael Irvin.
[4:10] Speaker 1: Like, I hope the Seahawks understand tell people this, and
[4:15] Speaker 1: I thought the Rams and the Patriots would win. I mean,
[4:18] Speaker 1: the Patriots game the second half is just I've never
[4:20] Speaker 1: seen anything like that. But the Rams defensive front between
[4:26] Speaker 1: Young and Verse and Kobe Turner and Ford and Landman
[4:33] Speaker 1: in the box like they have. They have no weakness
[4:35] Speaker 1: of the kid from Florida State, Brandon Fisk like that.
[4:38] Speaker 1: Six guys can all play at an a level. And
[4:42] Speaker 1: I thought that was going to be the undoing. I
[4:44] Speaker 1: thought they were going to pressure Sam into a mistake
[4:46] Speaker 1: because Seattle's oh lines the weakness of the team. But
[4:49] Speaker 1: you know what, they held up well the utter. The
[4:52] Speaker 1: other thing that needs to be said about Seattle. I
[4:54] Speaker 1: thought Walker was sensational today. John Greg co Celos calls
[5:00] Speaker 1: him a little bit of a jazz player. He's kind
[5:02] Speaker 1: of doing his own thing. How many rams missed the day?
[5:07] Speaker 1: If you went back and watched every carry by Walker
[5:11] Speaker 1: or catch and counted the number of Seahawks that not
[5:15] Speaker 1: only missed that he spun off of it they didn't
[5:17] Speaker 1: get a hand on him, could have been twenty from
[5:20] Speaker 1: the very first drive. I thought Walker was sensational today.
[5:24] Speaker 2: Yeah. He's been playing well really the last the two
[5:27] Speaker 2: Niner games he dominated and then today, I mean his
[5:30] Speaker 2: stats aren't as good as he looked like you said.
[5:33] Speaker 2: He you know, Sharboney out. They become very dependent on him.
[5:35] Speaker 2: They're a running team. Yeah, I know. They throw him
[5:38] Speaker 2: for three hundred and fifty yards, but that's not how
[5:40] Speaker 2: they want to play. I also think Sam Darnold the
[5:43] Speaker 2: Shanahan Kubiak play where you fake the handoff and boot.
[5:47] Speaker 2: If you blitz or get pressure on that side where
[5:50] Speaker 2: he's booted the play, it's the worst play in the NFL.
[5:52] Speaker 2: He ate it a couple of times. Yeah, you know,
[5:55] Speaker 2: you can do the CJ. Stroud where you try to
[5:57] Speaker 2: make a miraculous play and he has the season right.
[6:01] Speaker 2: He had a stretch where fourteen interceptions I think six fumbles.
[6:05] Speaker 2: He was smart, just hit the ground, lived to fight
[6:07] Speaker 2: another day. You would rather be second and eighteen. Then
[6:11] Speaker 2: they got the ball, or you throw a pick six,
[6:13] Speaker 2: or you fumble it. So he had three sacks, which
[6:15] Speaker 2: I would imagine he lost twenty five yards. So I
[6:17] Speaker 2: mean he's averaging eight yards of loss, way better than
[6:21] Speaker 2: a turnover. So you're not gonna fumble it. You're not
[6:23] Speaker 2: gonna throw a pick this game. You couldn't afford it.
[6:25] Speaker 2: I mean, really, the difference in the game, like you said,
[6:27] Speaker 2: was the punt play, and really the Seattle kind of
[6:32] Speaker 2: got a turnover when the guy got the taunting penalty
[6:34] Speaker 2: because they were gonna punt and then the next play
[6:37] Speaker 2: they score a touchdown. So those two plays were fumble, taunt, touchdown, touchdown, right,
[6:42] Speaker 2: So a mistake. These offenses were gonna make you pay.
[6:45] Speaker 2: Darnle to me gets credit on the sacks because sometimes
[6:48] Speaker 2: on that boot when you turn around all the time,
[6:51] Speaker 2: all these teams run this offense, quarterbacks freak, they throw
[6:54] Speaker 2: it as they're getting hit. He just hit the ground
[6:57] Speaker 2: and that was you know, we talked about Sam the
[7:00] Speaker 2: seeing ghost. He goes forever playing smart, even last year
[7:05] Speaker 2: right at Minnesota playing the Rams today was a smart
[7:09] Speaker 2: game by him. And I don't think he's gonna no
[7:11] Speaker 2: one's gonna talk about the sacks, but that those plays
[7:14] Speaker 2: saved the ground or saved the game when you just
[7:16] Speaker 2: hit the ground.
[7:17] Speaker 1: Think about this. Sam Darnald left the Jets, he went
[7:20] Speaker 1: to Carolina and for the first time in his pro career,
[7:22] Speaker 1: he sat, and then Carolina with six games left November
[7:27] Speaker 1: twenty seventh of that year, start Sam Donald. From that
[7:30] Speaker 1: November twenty seventh dog he goes four and two with Carolina,
[7:36] Speaker 1: one to oh with San Francisco, wins fourteen games with Minnesota,
[7:41] Speaker 1: and this year he is in that span since starting
[7:44] Speaker 1: in Carolina after sitting the winningest quarterback in the league,
[7:49] Speaker 1: malomes a second, and he has the most one hundred
[7:52] Speaker 1: plus passer rating games. And I don't know what his
[7:55] Speaker 1: passer rating was today. I imagine because he has so
[7:58] Speaker 1: many throws down the field that's over one hundred. You made. Yeah,
[8:02] Speaker 1: So I think when you think about this John, four
[8:06] Speaker 1: different teams, four different coaches, four different coordinators, four different rosters.
[8:11] Speaker 1: Sam Donald's the winningest quarterback in the league since that
[8:13] Speaker 1: November twenty seventh in Carolina when he got the start,
[8:17] Speaker 1: starting job back, So do it. And I thought Brady
[8:21] Speaker 1: and Burkhart were so good today. You know, listen, Fox
[8:24] Speaker 1: does the NFL really well. Burkhart is sensational, and Brady
[8:29] Speaker 1: said it at the end of the game. He goes,
[8:31] Speaker 1: Sam is more explosive than surgical, like like that's what
[8:35] Speaker 1: he is. Some guys are search Cam Newton was more
[8:38] Speaker 1: explosive than surgical. That's Sam. Andrew Luck, by the way,
[8:43] Speaker 1: to me, and as much as I like Luck, he
[8:45] Speaker 1: wasn't surgical. He liked to let it rip. And I've
[8:48] Speaker 1: always said Donald's a slightly less talented Andrew Luck. He's
[8:52] Speaker 1: not Andrew Luck. L Luck's like Elway to me, like
[8:54] Speaker 1: coming out of college. But I think if you look
[8:58] Speaker 1: at this game today, they'll be favored by it least
[9:00] Speaker 1: a field goal over New England. I don't know how
[9:04] Speaker 1: New England blocks Seattle's defensive front. I don't know how
[9:08] Speaker 1: they would have blocked the Rams defensive front because I
[9:12] Speaker 1: thought Drake may today snow or not. They couldn't move
[9:15] Speaker 1: that ball in the first half they were getting dominated
[9:18] Speaker 1: up front, and so I really think New England will
[9:22] Speaker 1: struggle to consistently move the ball.
[9:24] Speaker 2: Now.
[9:24] Speaker 1: They've played Houston, they've played Denver, so they're used to
[9:26] Speaker 1: playing these high end defenses. But it just feels like
[9:29] Speaker 1: Seattle's energy defensively, John is just it's different.
[9:34] Speaker 2: Well, Sam's gonna play like he just played for three hours,
[9:38] Speaker 2: Seattle's winning the Super Bowl like this, this thing's over.
[9:40] Speaker 2: If Sam Darnold is gonna play like that, they've proven
[9:42] Speaker 2: they could win games where he throws for one hundred
[9:44] Speaker 2: and twenty yards and win the game by thirty Like
[9:47] Speaker 2: if he's gonna throw for three to fifty, I see,
[9:49] Speaker 2: under no circumstance they lose because their defense won. The
[9:53] Speaker 2: Rams offense is dramatically better off than the New England
[9:58] Speaker 2: right and to me, I had to Buddy text me
[10:02] Speaker 2: this week He's like, how does JSN lead the league
[10:05] Speaker 2: in receiving? When I watch a lot of the Seattle
[10:07] Speaker 2: games and the quarterback throws for one hundred and fifty yards, Like, well,
[10:10] Speaker 2: the first half they were more explosive offensively the first
[10:13] Speaker 2: what eight games? But he has this in him. He
[10:17] Speaker 2: did this in Minnesota, he did this early in the season.
[10:19] Speaker 2: The offense just kind of hit a rut. But again,
[10:22] Speaker 2: what are great teams Like Brady didn't have to throw
[10:24] Speaker 2: for three hundred yards every day? Right A good team
[10:28] Speaker 2: is not. You know, Peyton Manning played on a lot
[10:29] Speaker 2: of teams that were very dependent on him and if
[10:31] Speaker 2: he played bad, they would get smoked. That's why last
[10:34] Speaker 2: week he played at Jimmy GAROPPOLOI Game three, one hundred
[10:37] Speaker 2: and twenty yards. They won forty one to six. And
[10:39] Speaker 2: then today they had to match him like he you
[10:42] Speaker 2: know a lot of people, he's a polarizing player. Rightfully,
[10:44] Speaker 2: so there is noe you do this in the NFC
[10:46] Speaker 2: Championship game, throw for three hundred and forty yards, Colin
[10:50] Speaker 2: he only had nine income Am I doing eleven? Twenty
[10:53] Speaker 2: five or thirty six three touchdowns. No it or said
[10:55] Speaker 2: he didn't even throw the ball really into Harm's way.
[10:57] Speaker 2: How many balls were like woll that was a bad pass.
[11:00] Speaker 2: He's not the most accurate. I wouldn't call him Peyton
[11:03] Speaker 2: is prime, Like even that Cooper Cup pass. Little behind,
[11:06] Speaker 2: yeah no, but it's not the end of the world.
[11:09] Speaker 2: It's not so behind he can't catch it. He's not
[11:11] Speaker 2: a pinpoint accurate guy. But he was more pinpoint or
[11:15] Speaker 2: more accurate today, I thought than he has been a
[11:17] Speaker 2: lot down the stretch. He was really good.
[11:20] Speaker 1: Two things. He's still dealing with an oblique injury. They
[11:23] Speaker 1: took a shot of him on the sideline and he
[11:25] Speaker 1: was wincing. So Darnold's doing this got to the super
[11:29] Speaker 1: Bowl with an oblique injury, which I've never had one had.
[11:32] Speaker 1: I've known athletes who have had him. They're brutal, you know,
[11:35] Speaker 1: there's especially for a quarterback. You're torquing. You can't you
[11:38] Speaker 1: can't quite tork as well. The other thing is with
[11:41] Speaker 1: Sharbonnet out for the season, Sam had to deliver today.
[11:45] Speaker 1: That's what was most impressive to me is that Stafford
[11:48] Speaker 1: was on fire, and let's face it, the Rams offense
[11:51] Speaker 1: matches up well with Seattle. Here's how good the Rams
[11:54] Speaker 1: offense is. They go after Witherspoon, who Davon Witherspoon's arguably
[11:58] Speaker 1: the best corner after Patrick Startan in the league. They
[12:01] Speaker 1: go after him. They beat him down field with Kuka.
[12:04] Speaker 1: The ball got out in the flat with I think
[12:06] Speaker 1: it was Coren, but it may have been Kyra and Williams,
[12:08] Speaker 1: and he joked him and got it first down. Like
[12:10] Speaker 1: with her Spoon is in almost every game. He plays
[12:13] Speaker 1: as good as any athlete on the field offensive defense,
[12:16] Speaker 1: her Rams go after him. So, I mean, you know,
[12:19] Speaker 1: it was interesting.
[12:20] Speaker 2: Seattle can't cover They definitely can't cover Puku at two
[12:23] Speaker 2: hundred plus yards last game he had one hundred and sixty.
[12:25] Speaker 2: You had DeVante back in the mix, had four catches
[12:28] Speaker 2: for ninety yards, So I mean they can't cover these
[12:30] Speaker 2: two guys.
[12:31] Speaker 1: Think about how many still one think how close it
[12:33] Speaker 1: is if the tight end Colby Parkinson catches that ball.
[12:38] Speaker 1: And by the way, I did think it was tipped
[12:42] Speaker 1: slightly by the linebacker. The Seattle linebacker, the former USC kid,
[12:47] Speaker 1: I think he played for the Chargers and then the
[12:49] Speaker 1: Seahawks picked him up. About four years ago. He I
[12:53] Speaker 1: think he just tipped it and it You know, that's
[12:57] Speaker 1: the difference. If it moves an inch to your hands.
[13:00] Speaker 1: If that ball's caught, Seattle probably could lose the football game.
[13:04] Speaker 1: I mean, that's how close the game was. The other
[13:06] Speaker 1: thing that jumped out to me, you know that Buffalo
[13:09] Speaker 1: Denver interception catch controversial play Cooper Cup on that first down.
[13:18] Speaker 1: Remember in the Denver Buffalo game, they allowed the interception
[13:21] Speaker 1: because they said the ground you have to catch the
[13:24] Speaker 1: ball through the ground. That was the ruling. That's why
[13:28] Speaker 1: they allowed the interception. Cooper Cup did not catch that
[13:30] Speaker 1: ball through the ground. He fumbled the ball when the
[13:35] Speaker 1: ball hit the ground, And I don't think that changed
[13:40] Speaker 1: the outcome. But my point is that's what everybody's screaming about.
[13:43] Speaker 1: You have to define what a catch is. So when
[13:45] Speaker 1: Cooper bobbled it, I'm going wait time out. So if
[13:48] Speaker 1: that player would have just picked it up off that,
[13:51] Speaker 1: it's an interception, like he hit the ground, bobbled it.
[13:54] Speaker 1: And it's like, you have to go through the process.
[13:56] Speaker 1: I've been hearing this in our head for two weeks,
[13:58] Speaker 1: the process of the catch. You have to go through
[14:00] Speaker 1: the process. So there were a couple of calls either way.
[14:03] Speaker 1: In the end, I felt that the entire game. I
[14:06] Speaker 1: really did feel like in the first half, I thought
[14:08] Speaker 1: there was a moment after that. No, it was after
[14:11] Speaker 1: the fumbled punt. I thought, oh, Rams are in big trouble.
[14:13] Speaker 1: Then they drove down. Stafford went boom, boom, boom, three
[14:16] Speaker 1: big completions, touchdown. I'm like, Okay, this is.
[14:21] Speaker 2: God.
[14:22] Speaker 1: It's just incredible. You know, even though the Seahawks have
[14:29] Speaker 1: totally committed to Darnald, ask yourself if he would have
[14:34] Speaker 1: lost to d ann had a couple of interceptions, there
[14:37] Speaker 1: would be people saying John Snyder has to draft the
[14:40] Speaker 1: quarterback in a year. Honestly, give up one of these
[14:43] Speaker 1: guys and get because the funny thing is, you can
[14:46] Speaker 1: do a lot of things as a quarterback. It's funny
[14:48] Speaker 1: John we let Farv throw picks l way through a
[14:52] Speaker 1: bunch of picks. You can go to name it through
[14:54] Speaker 1: a bunch of picks. Josh Allen throws a bunch of
[14:57] Speaker 1: picks lock through a bunch of picks. Stafford gets in
[15:00] Speaker 1: these stretches right through those picks. But until you start
[15:03] Speaker 1: adding playoff wins to your resume, you're not really allowed
[15:07] Speaker 1: to be reckless. So I think this game today for
[15:10] Speaker 1: Donald where he had to carry the team, I think
[15:14] Speaker 1: you said this when we started. It really pushed him
[15:17] Speaker 1: past like a rubicon, Like there's there's always been this.
[15:20] Speaker 1: Let's see Sam, not the running backs, Let's see Sam
[15:24] Speaker 1: carry it, And today he did and had to because
[15:26] Speaker 1: they couldn't stop Stafford for a great portion of the game.
[15:29] Speaker 2: Well think how many guys you know, the Mahomes, the
[15:32] Speaker 2: Josh Allen, the Burrow kind of Lamar, the MVP level guys,
[15:36] Speaker 2: and then there's this group of probably seven eight guys
[15:39] Speaker 2: from Purdy to Jalen Hurts to Cousins forever Dak, Yeah
[15:44] Speaker 2: they have How many of those guys have ever had
[15:46] Speaker 2: a game like this in this spot? I mean Dak
[15:48] Speaker 2: has been historically awful in the playoffs. Yeah, Pty, Perty's
[15:52] Speaker 2: had some moments. He's been to a super Bowl. You know,
[15:54] Speaker 2: Jalen has had big suit But it's that's a defining
[15:57] Speaker 2: to like move you to the top of the list. Sam.
[16:00] Speaker 2: People waffled when he'd play well, people would be on him.
[16:03] Speaker 2: When he played bad, they'd write him off. You do
[16:06] Speaker 2: this in an NFC Championship game. I mean, I think
[16:09] Speaker 2: about John Schneider to sign that contract to get him
[16:13] Speaker 2: on such a team friendly deal. Cooper Cup has a
[16:16] Speaker 2: massive touchdown in this game. Think about the moment for him.
[16:20] Speaker 2: McVeigh looked at him and said, you're not good enough.
[16:22] Speaker 2: We want your money to go to Devonte, which Shawn's
[16:24] Speaker 2: not even wrong, Like any GM would rather have DeVante
[16:27] Speaker 2: than this version of Cooper Cup. But Cooper Cup the
[16:30] Speaker 2: last couple weeks makes his place and today a big touchdown,
[16:33] Speaker 2: even the play that ended up standing on the first down,
[16:35] Speaker 2: which I even thought he was short of it besides
[16:38] Speaker 2: it wasn't a catch. But McVeigh was in a tough spot.
[16:41] Speaker 2: If you throw the red flag, you lose all your timeouts.
[16:43] Speaker 2: But today from Ernest Jones making plays, I mean this team.
[16:48] Speaker 2: One thing that really put Howie Roseman to a different
[16:51] Speaker 2: level is he won two Super Bowls with two coaches
[16:54] Speaker 2: and two quarterbacks. Like that's pretty hard to do most guys.
[16:57] Speaker 2: If you know Bill Pollian did all his winning with
[17:00] Speaker 2: Jim Kelly and Peyton Manning, you know, the best GMS
[17:03] Speaker 2: usually have like one or two, like Hall of Fame
[17:05] Speaker 2: quarterbacks Russell we all thought was gonna be a Hall
[17:08] Speaker 2: of Fame Locke. I don't think these last five years
[17:10] Speaker 2: have not been kind to him. And now he's built
[17:13] Speaker 2: this team with Mike McDonald that is just completely loaded
[17:15] Speaker 2: with players everywhere. That's the other thing they got. They
[17:18] Speaker 2: got good players at every position, starting with the quarterback
[17:21] Speaker 2: who's not on some obscene contract, and a coaching staff.
[17:26] Speaker 2: It does kind of feel like the court the offensive
[17:28] Speaker 2: coordinator might be the next head coach of the Raiders. Kubiak,
[17:31] Speaker 2: he's pretty good, you know. He obviously kind of looks
[17:34] Speaker 2: like his dad Gary. But what a moment for John
[17:37] Speaker 2: Schneyder to build this that Seattle have this home playoff
[17:39] Speaker 2: game and get the job done there. So yeah, that
[17:42] Speaker 2: was from Sam to the coaching staff. What a year
[17:45] Speaker 2: for Seattle. I mean, one colin coming into the season,
[17:49] Speaker 2: they were five to one to win their own division,
[17:51] Speaker 2: the forty nine Ers and Rams were heavy favors to
[17:54] Speaker 2: win the division. And then Seattle not only wins the division,
[17:57] Speaker 2: they're the number one seed. What an accomplishment, and now
[18:01] Speaker 2: they're not only favor in the Super Bowl. Do you
[18:04] Speaker 2: think a lot of people are gonna pick New England
[18:06] Speaker 2: in this game? I'm not saying they can't. This is
[18:09] Speaker 2: the only where it feels like the Joe Montana Niners
[18:12] Speaker 2: against death.
[18:13] Speaker 1: The only unit in the game that to me is
[18:16] Speaker 1: below average is New England's offensive line, which speaks very
[18:20] Speaker 1: well of Drake May and Mike Frable because they have
[18:24] Speaker 1: a below average O line and yet they beat Denver,
[18:29] Speaker 1: they beat Houston, they beat the Chargers. Those are, you know,
[18:35] Speaker 1: three of the top five defenses in the league and
[18:38] Speaker 1: great pass rushes, and so they're going to get another
[18:41] Speaker 1: great pass rush now they got. The blizzard helped a
[18:44] Speaker 1: little bit obviously in the second half of h I mean,
[18:47] Speaker 1: it was ridiculous that we're deciding super Bowls based on
[18:50] Speaker 1: that kind of weather. But when I look at the
[18:54] Speaker 1: Super Bowl between Seattle and I wouldn't make Seattle about
[18:57] Speaker 1: a four point three and a half point favorite. I
[18:59] Speaker 1: guess is what I'd make. The only unit where you
[19:04] Speaker 1: look at it and Mike McDonald will see it instantly,
[19:07] Speaker 1: where you think, oh, that's below average is the offensive line.
[19:10] Speaker 1: Will Campbell, the rookie left tackle, is good, but he's
[19:13] Speaker 1: not he gets beat. So I mean, just what's remarkable
[19:19] Speaker 1: about what happened today? And I keep using that word,
[19:21] Speaker 1: But if I said to you, what are the ten
[19:24] Speaker 1: think about this? The ten best La Ram players? Stafford, Pooka,
[19:30] Speaker 1: Kien Williams, Jared Verse, Young, Poona Ford, Kobe Turner, DeVante Adams,
[19:41] Speaker 1: Nate Landman. And I'm just naming players off the top
[19:44] Speaker 1: of my head. I'm at eight or nine guys. Now,
[19:47] Speaker 1: that team I just named lost. I mean just because
[19:51] Speaker 1: the NFC was the superior conference all year. Think about
[19:55] Speaker 1: how talented the Rams are and they lost, and and
[20:00] Speaker 1: by the way, played well except for a punt on
[20:04] Speaker 1: special teams. I mean like the Rams played poorly. They played.
[20:08] Speaker 1: All those Pro Bowl level players played well today. Stafford
[20:13] Speaker 1: was amazing, Pooka was amazing, Davonte was amazing. The pass
[20:17] Speaker 1: rush was good, and they still lost. That gives you
[20:19] Speaker 1: a sense of how good Seattle is.
[20:22] Speaker 2: When the running backs were good. I mean, both of
[20:25] Speaker 2: them made play whole game long.
[20:28] Speaker 1: Jesus it is.
[20:30] Speaker 2: I think this is just one of those that you know,
[20:33] Speaker 2: mcveigh's had these moments and today it just didn't quite
[20:36] Speaker 2: go his way. It wasn't because you know, the special
[20:40] Speaker 2: teams thing is one of those that I think we
[20:44] Speaker 2: blame and McVeigh literally did. He fired the special teams coach,
[20:47] Speaker 2: he the special team like the coach has nothing to
[20:51] Speaker 2: do with your punter and your kicker. This is like
[20:53] Speaker 2: they're not like a golf swing coach to those guys.
[20:56] Speaker 2: And you're really defined by your depth, which to me,
[20:59] Speaker 2: it's more on does your coach emphasize it and the
[21:02] Speaker 2: depth that your general manager has produced. And in fairness,
[21:05] Speaker 2: they haven't had first round picks over the years, so
[21:08] Speaker 2: their depth they're not as deep as Seattle, who's had
[21:11] Speaker 2: more picks, especially high end picks, who have a deeper team.
[21:14] Speaker 2: And what are they great on special teams? So to me,
[21:18] Speaker 2: and part of it is they made the trade for
[21:19] Speaker 2: Shaheed who is a fantastic returner. What did the Rams
[21:23] Speaker 2: have to do bens the return man because he fumbled
[21:25] Speaker 2: it and put a running back in there that had
[21:27] Speaker 2: six career punt returns just because they just wanted him
[21:30] Speaker 2: to catch it. The forty nine ers have done this
[21:32] Speaker 2: before with like use check, just catch the ball. We
[21:34] Speaker 2: don't even want to gain a yard, We just don't
[21:36] Speaker 2: want a problem. So when I saw Sean go to
[21:39] Speaker 2: Kierwan Williams, he got on the headset and said get
[21:41] Speaker 2: him out of there. And he's not allowed back in
[21:42] Speaker 2: the game. It wasn't because they thought Kierwan Williams was
[21:45] Speaker 2: going to give him fifty yards. But they're so rattled
[21:48] Speaker 2: by that unit. And let's face it, you could argue
[21:50] Speaker 2: that unit cost them the super Bowl, cost them the
[21:53] Speaker 2: one seed, cost McVeagh another ring, because offensive and defensively,
[21:57] Speaker 2: this team could have won a Super Bowl. It's just
[21:59] Speaker 2: the special teams unit. And you didn't know could be
[22:01] Speaker 2: a kickoff return. It could be. Remember the field goal
[22:04] Speaker 2: block early this season against the Eagles. Today, the punt return.
[22:08] Speaker 2: It could happen in any one of their units at
[22:10] Speaker 2: any moment. You had no clue who was Isaiah Simmons
[22:14] Speaker 2: blocked the punt. He barely touched them. You just had
[22:17] Speaker 2: no clue when it was going to come, but you
[22:19] Speaker 2: knew it was gonna come. It was basically a lock
[22:21] Speaker 2: for the Rams, for all their greatness, and they got
[22:23] Speaker 2: like you said, you just listed all their players, and
[22:26] Speaker 2: all those players you just named played a high level
[22:29] Speaker 2: NFC championship game, but especially just a free seven points,
[22:32] Speaker 2: and they had to lose by four points.

[23:37] Speaker 1: or Virginia to play. Terms and conditions apply. Concerned about
[23:40] Speaker 1: gambling in Florida, call one eighty and eight. Admit it.
[23:43] Speaker 1: In Indiana. If you are somebody you know as a
[23:44] Speaker 1: problem wants help, call one eight hundred and nine with it.
[23:47] Speaker 1: Gambling problem called one eight hundred gambler Arizona, Colorado, Illinois,
[23:50] Speaker 1: New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia. Yeah, I didn't mention both
[23:59] Speaker 1: their guards. I mean, Dotson has been like the top
[24:03] Speaker 1: three rated guard. They have two elite they probably have
[24:05] Speaker 1: the best guard tandem in the league. I didn't mention
[24:07] Speaker 1: those two when I mentioned they're eight best players. So
[24:10] Speaker 1: and that team lost Seattle. You know, Seattle plays with
[24:13] Speaker 1: almost a college energy, and they are the second youngest
[24:16] Speaker 1: team in the league. And I thought the Rams did
[24:19] Speaker 1: a good job to match it today because Seattle just
[24:23] Speaker 1: is I mean they come out swinging, I mean they're
[24:26] Speaker 1: they're not a conservative fighter. I mean they come out
[24:29] Speaker 1: playing one hundred miles an hour. That's why I think
[24:31] Speaker 1: John Donald Sam Darnald matches the Seahawks roster. Whereas if
[24:36] Speaker 1: you look at the Rams. It's very surgical. What they
[24:40] Speaker 1: do is surgical. So that's Stafford. Donald is more dynamic
[24:44] Speaker 1: and more explosive, less surgical, but that's the Seahawks. I
[24:48] Speaker 1: mean they may they have some penalties, they have some turnovers.
[24:52] Speaker 1: I mean that you see the Tarique Wooden stuff today
[24:54] Speaker 1: is just nonsense. You're just like pulling your hair out.
[24:56] Speaker 1: But that's what Seattle does. They make those mistakes, those
[24:59] Speaker 1: youth full, immature mistakes of young players, and they're barking
[25:03] Speaker 1: at each other on the sideline, the safety in the corner.
[25:06] Speaker 1: But it's part of I think what why Darnald fits.
[25:11] Speaker 1: He's one of them. Like the team is a risk
[25:15] Speaker 1: taking team. Rams are surgical. The Seahawks are like you know,
[25:19] Speaker 1: they're they're they've got a good strong chin, but they
[25:21] Speaker 1: leave themselves open, you know. They they open themselves up
[25:25] Speaker 1: to getting tagged. And the Rams had to match and
[25:29] Speaker 1: almost didn't. Early the Rams had to match their energy
[25:32] Speaker 1: did But in the end, I think both of us
[25:35] Speaker 1: felt like I thought the Rams would win today because
[25:38] Speaker 1: you know, I just thought it would come down to
[25:39] Speaker 1: you like make May and Stafford. But we said this
[25:43] Speaker 1: multiple times this year. When you watch the Seahawks and
[25:45] Speaker 1: turn the sound down. They don't look like anybody else.
[25:49] Speaker 1: They're just just explosive and fast and long and powerful.
[25:52] Speaker 1: And they have a defensive line rotation. Dude, everybody runs well.
[25:56] Speaker 1: Everybody in the team runs well.
[25:59] Speaker 2: So yeah, I mean they probably have the best they
[26:01] Speaker 2: I mean, they have, if not the best looking defensive line.
[26:04] Speaker 2: I don't know, top two or three, best defensive line
[26:06] Speaker 2: looking team in the league. Me. So when that's your
[26:09] Speaker 2: point of difference, is your defensive line. I mean, look
[26:11] Speaker 2: at the Texans. Their offense was horrendous and they still
[26:13] Speaker 2: had a chance because their defensive line was that good.
[26:15] Speaker 2: So I just think Seattle, you know, to do this
[26:18] Speaker 2: with this team that to start the season. I just
[26:21] Speaker 2: don't feel a lot of people were picking them. And
[26:25] Speaker 2: this is also you know, Buffalo, who has gone through
[26:28] Speaker 2: a lot these last Cup having home field advantage unless
[26:32] Speaker 2: it turns into a blizzard and then it becomes a
[26:33] Speaker 2: coin is a really big deal. Yes, Stafford has to
[26:36] Speaker 2: kneel down to communicate with his teammates. McVeigh was talking
[26:41] Speaker 2: clearly to Brady and Burkhard about how important the communication was.
[26:44] Speaker 2: He thought it was terrible last week in Chicago, He's like,
[26:46] Speaker 2: it's gonna be even louder. It is a huge point
[26:49] Speaker 2: of difference in football because unlike baseball or basketball, this
[26:52] Speaker 2: isn't two three to two. You know this, You don't
[26:54] Speaker 2: get to go back and forth. You get one game.
[26:56] Speaker 2: And this is not that the Rams have a home
[26:59] Speaker 2: field advantage. Just having the home game just neutralizes what
[27:03] Speaker 2: happens to Seattle, even if it's a fifty to fifty
[27:06] Speaker 2: split of.
[27:06] Speaker 1: Fans and Seattle. A young team feeds off that energy.
[27:10] Speaker 2: Oh no, they were up twenty four unless they fumbled
[27:13] Speaker 2: that punt, twenty four to three. The way they started
[27:16] Speaker 2: the game, scored a touchdown, like they came out ready
[27:19] Speaker 2: and being as like you said, being aggressive. They were
[27:22] Speaker 2: gonna lean being aggressive. Even a couple of times I
[27:23] Speaker 2: thought that I could see Kobak running the ball like Pops.
[27:26] Speaker 1: Well, how about they threw the ball.
[27:27] Speaker 2: They were throwing constantly.
[27:29] Speaker 1: How About when they got down to under like two
[27:31] Speaker 1: minutes and Brady and Burkhart were like, and they threw
[27:35] Speaker 1: a flag. They're like, well they're throwing I mean they said, okay,
[27:39] Speaker 1: all you have to do is run here and the
[27:40] Speaker 1: game is over. And they threw they got a flag. So,
[27:42] Speaker 1: I mean that's just that defined Seattle. Like, guys, we're
[27:45] Speaker 1: not doing what everybody else does. And so I don't
[27:48] Speaker 1: think they'll go in even as a favorite against New England,
[27:50] Speaker 1: they'll play aggressive. I just think Seattle's identity is the
[27:56] Speaker 1: dark Side, you know, the Legion of the Boom and
[27:57] Speaker 1: the dark Side are this This franchise is very similar
[28:00] Speaker 1: to that where you have a defensive coach, an athletic
[28:03] Speaker 1: quarterback who's not that surgical, more elusive. You have a
[28:07] Speaker 1: defense that is young, fast, you lean on the run game,
[28:10] Speaker 1: but you have a receiver or two that can burn
[28:12] Speaker 1: you all time. Stuff. Okay, New England beat Denver ten
[28:16] Speaker 1: to seven, so I think snow or not. I think
[28:21] Speaker 1: New England was a better team. But I will say
[28:25] Speaker 1: the second half was useless. I mean it was just survival.
[28:27] Speaker 1: It was like a man versus Wild you know, one
[28:30] Speaker 1: of those TV shows Like so, I almost thought they
[28:35] Speaker 1: should have if they had the weather forecast shut it
[28:39] Speaker 1: down for an hour. I'm like, this is brutal, CBS.
[28:41] Speaker 1: I felt bad for you couldn't see anything, you know,
[28:45] Speaker 1: there was a.
[28:46] Speaker 2: Yard they were on. I mean, how would you look
[28:48] Speaker 2: up like, I don't know, where they are on the field.
[28:50] Speaker 1: So there was a moment when they could have gone
[28:52] Speaker 1: up ten nothing and Sean Payton elected with a backup
[28:55] Speaker 1: quarterback to go for it. I would not have. I
[28:58] Speaker 1: would have kicked the field goal to go up ten.
[29:00] Speaker 1: Thing Now, I did not know. I looked up the weather.
[29:02] Speaker 1: I didn't think there was a blizzard in the forecast.
[29:04] Speaker 1: I thought it. You know, they were saying Tony Romo
[29:08] Speaker 1: at one point said the weather is getting really bad
[29:10] Speaker 1: and it's way worse than you see on TV, meaning
[29:13] Speaker 1: you can't tell wind necessarily when you're looking at field
[29:16] Speaker 1: in players unless you see a flag, so you know it.
[29:19] Speaker 1: Obviously you couldn't throw the ball. So what did you make?
[29:23] Speaker 1: First of all, I would have kicked the field goal.
[29:26] Speaker 1: This is analytically. I just disagree with this. I've said
[29:30] Speaker 1: it in the NBA. I think the mid range game,
[29:32] Speaker 1: especially in the playoffs, matters. So I need a bucket,
[29:35] Speaker 1: not a three. I don't care about math. Get me
[29:37] Speaker 1: a bucket, get me a stop, and I'm sorry when
[29:39] Speaker 1: you get to the playoffs, I want points, especially with
[29:42] Speaker 1: Jarrett Stidham, I want points. I mean, that's what's your
[29:46] Speaker 1: take on that.
[29:47] Speaker 2: I don't know when it became so in vogue, I
[29:50] Speaker 2: mean obviously the last several years, to go for it
[29:54] Speaker 2: early in these games, like late in the game of
[29:56] Speaker 2: that Ram Seattle game, it's a four point game. No
[29:59] Speaker 2: one has any problem with McVeigh going forward on fourth
[30:02] Speaker 2: and four because it was essentially fourth and goal you're
[30:04] Speaker 2: down for it felt like the game right there. Totally understandable.
[30:08] Speaker 2: In these first half of NFL playoff games. Most of
[30:12] Speaker 2: these do not play out to high scoring events, especially
[30:15] Speaker 2: in the AFC where the weather plays a big factor. So,
[30:18] Speaker 2: like you said, even if you don't know the crazy
[30:22] Speaker 2: blizzard is coming down the street. Here, you have a
[30:26] Speaker 2: backup quarterback playing. You are a defensive team. I mean
[30:30] Speaker 2: over the last couple of years, their defense it hasn't
[30:33] Speaker 2: played as well, but has definitely been one of the
[30:35] Speaker 2: better units in the league. You have a chance to
[30:38] Speaker 2: go up two scores against a quarterback who's what played
[30:41] Speaker 2: and this is his third playoff game of his career
[30:43] Speaker 2: and is how he's coming from bam Ohio State hasn't
[30:45] Speaker 2: played in that many big games the last five years.
[30:47] Speaker 2: So you go up multiple scores and Sean Payton and
[30:51] Speaker 2: Dan Campbell said this, he got his aggressiveness from watching Sean.
[30:54] Speaker 2: I'm never anti being aggressive, but in the first half
[30:58] Speaker 2: of a game when they have zero points, I never
[31:02] Speaker 2: understand not going for a field goal when you're opponent
[31:04] Speaker 2: at zero points. It's become an epidemic of teams going
[31:07] Speaker 2: Ben Johnson's the worst at this. In zero zero games.
[31:10] Speaker 2: It's like, you know, field goal, you get the lead.
[31:12] Speaker 2: Here I second half of games when both teams are
[31:16] Speaker 2: in the thirties, I get you, right, if it's the
[31:18] Speaker 2: Bears Niner game, that's Sunday night or Monday night game,
[31:20] Speaker 2: it's like, yeah, no one's stopping anybody. Five minutes into
[31:23] Speaker 2: a game or ten minutes into you have no clue
[31:25] Speaker 2: how it's gonna play out. And look how this thing
[31:27] Speaker 2: played out. But the points were literally the game. I
[31:30] Speaker 2: mean that decided the game. Now they ended up forcing
[31:33] Speaker 2: a punt, but then George Stidham had that fumble play
[31:36] Speaker 2: that that's a backup quarterback. I mean, that's at any
[31:40] Speaker 2: moment I know Sean tried to speak it into existence.
[31:44] Speaker 2: This guy hadn't played, So to think that you could
[31:46] Speaker 2: come out and running the scout team for five straight
[31:49] Speaker 2: months and then just play well, especially in a game.
[31:52] Speaker 2: Even if the wins and the snow hadn't come, it
[31:54] Speaker 2: was still twenty five degrees. So that's a big difference
[31:59] Speaker 2: than what we just witnessed in the NIKE Well yeah,
[32:02] Speaker 2: I mean, I listen. I Denver only had four first
[32:05] Speaker 2: downs in the first half, but New England wasn't exactly
[32:09] Speaker 2: moving it up and down the field.
[32:10] Speaker 1: My take was, if you.
[32:11] Speaker 2: Watched dominated getting dominated in that game.
[32:14] Speaker 1: Yeah, So my take was, if you watched, if Sean
[32:17] Speaker 1: was watching the offensive line, his d line, Zach Allen, Benito,
[32:21] Speaker 1: we're dominating New England up front. So my take is
[32:24] Speaker 1: just take the ten nothing lead. Dude, they are they
[32:27] Speaker 1: may beat you instead of May throw a pick six
[32:29] Speaker 1: and make a huge mistake. But there they are struggling
[32:33] Speaker 1: up front to block great May was on the run
[32:36] Speaker 1: every play. In fact, it was interesting because I thought
[32:38] Speaker 1: the Seahawks O line, I mean, they had a couple
[32:42] Speaker 1: of blitz sacks. The Rams did, but the Seahawks O
[32:45] Speaker 1: line is the weakness of that team. I thought they
[32:47] Speaker 1: played pretty well. Left side of it's pretty good. But
[32:51] Speaker 1: I think somebody said four teams have never made the
[32:53] Speaker 1: Super Bowl. Robert Kraft has made eleven.
[32:59] Speaker 2: I mean, he's made more Super Bowls than the Steelers
[33:02] Speaker 2: and the Niners. Think about that. They didn't what they
[33:05] Speaker 2: had been to two super Bowls up till two thousand
[33:07] Speaker 2: and one. The league had been rolling then for what
[33:09] Speaker 2: thirty plus years? They've been to two? How many they've
[33:12] Speaker 2: been to?
[33:13] Speaker 1: What?
[33:14] Speaker 2: Bill went to nine? Now Verbel they've been to ten
[33:16] Speaker 2: with in the last twenty Can you imagine, you know who?
[33:18] Speaker 2: Today was a bad day for being a Bills fan.
[33:22] Speaker 2: You've had the best player in the sport, or one
[33:24] Speaker 2: of them now for in his prime of his career
[33:25] Speaker 2: the last five years, and the Patriots just bottomed out
[33:29] Speaker 2: and then a couple of years later they got Verbel
[33:30] Speaker 2: May and Josh McDaniels.
[33:32] Speaker 1: And how about the Super Bowl? How about this? The
[33:35] Speaker 1: Patriots first dynasty started with a tuck rule game in
[33:38] Speaker 1: the blizzard. Their second dynasty maybe did it start with this?
[33:42] Speaker 1: Because I'm I'm serious, John, I've never seen a half
[33:47] Speaker 1: of football that washed out by weather. I mean, it
[33:50] Speaker 1: was insane. If you were going against I mean, if
[33:54] Speaker 1: you were going against the snow, there was nothing you
[33:56] Speaker 1: could do. You couldn't see, which I just I'm not
[34:00] Speaker 1: a snow game guy. I'm really not. It's like anything else.
[34:04] Speaker 1: I don't think anybody My dad was a pud foreman,
[34:07] Speaker 1: my stepdad, so he got hit by lightning one time,
[34:10] Speaker 1: or the poll did he was at. So it's like
[34:14] Speaker 1: nobody performs at their best in bad weather. I don't
[34:17] Speaker 1: care if it's a pilot, I don't care if it's
[34:19] Speaker 1: a pud forman, I don't care if it's a quarterback.
[34:22] Speaker 1: I'm just I like to see these great athletes. You know, again,
[34:25] Speaker 1: I don't I don't mind. You know, sometimes you play
[34:28] Speaker 1: in a rain game and nobody's got there. It's kind
[34:30] Speaker 1: of fun. Rain games are kind of fun. Guys are
[34:32] Speaker 1: slipping around. But I don't know. I just I looked
[34:37] Speaker 1: at that game and I was I just thought it
[34:39] Speaker 1: was a huge disappointment for the league that were deciding
[34:42] Speaker 1: Super Bowls and blizzards. I don't know, it just didn't
[34:45] Speaker 1: sit with me.
[34:45] Speaker 2: Well, one big advantage for the Patriots during that game
[34:49] Speaker 2: was May's legs and he kept plays live in Joe Sidham,
[34:52] Speaker 2: who I was told was this athlete. I mean, I
[34:54] Speaker 2: don't know. I didn't really see it, and I'm not
[34:56] Speaker 2: blaming him. He's a backup quarterback. Likes. I had no
[35:00] Speaker 2: expectations for him. The first drive he had of the game,
[35:03] Speaker 2: I was like, damn, he's clearly that's a pretty big
[35:05] Speaker 2: army through a nice touchdown, passing the back of the
[35:07] Speaker 2: end zone, through the bomb earlier on that drive. But
[35:10] Speaker 2: as a game goes on, you and I have talked
[35:13] Speaker 2: about this all year. You gotta be careful about that
[35:14] Speaker 2: first drive.
[35:15] Speaker 1: In the NFL, Yeah it is.
[35:16] Speaker 2: It's a fake. It's a it's not quite a fugazi,
[35:19] Speaker 2: but it's kind of It's been mapped out in the
[35:21] Speaker 2: top coaches. Their first drives usually look pretty good. You
[35:25] Speaker 2: see Kubiaka, see McVeigh, you see Shanahan, see Andy, you
[35:28] Speaker 2: see Peyton. Like if they if they they usually go
[35:31] Speaker 2: down the field they're disappointed with three typically, So as
[35:36] Speaker 2: the game started, you saw him. He started getting raped
[35:38] Speaker 2: a little bit. He started scrambling when he might not
[35:40] Speaker 2: need to. And then by the time they get to
[35:43] Speaker 2: the second there was one play in the second half
[35:45] Speaker 2: where May through an out route and it probably missed
[35:48] Speaker 2: him by like seven yards. And then they throw a
[35:50] Speaker 2: back view of the wind and the snow. You're like,
[35:54] Speaker 2: you would hit a driver one hundred yards into this wind.
[35:56] Speaker 2: You know it's the wind, and that's why Romo said it.
[36:01] Speaker 2: You couldn't feel it. There was a time like how
[36:03] Speaker 2: bad is it? And then it started. It was so
[36:05] Speaker 2: clear that it was like you can't even function. But
[36:09] Speaker 2: that's kind of a that was always a Belichick thing,
[36:12] Speaker 2: no matter what you kind of felt they had the advantage.
[36:14] Speaker 2: You know, Vrabel takes this thing over. They had probably
[36:17] Speaker 2: better players than a lot of four win teams, that's
[36:19] Speaker 2: how bad their coach was. But they were not very good.
[36:22] Speaker 2: And last year Drake May and the offense was an embarrassment.
[36:25] Speaker 2: And this year we can talk about their schedule all
[36:28] Speaker 2: we want. They did beat the Bills in the regular season.
[36:30] Speaker 2: Then they beat Jim Harbaughs, Sean Payton and the best
[36:33] Speaker 2: defense in the league. Like, they've had a pretty good
[36:35] Speaker 2: little run here.
[36:35] Speaker 1: From a lot, I would have taken Denver to win.
[36:38] Speaker 1: If if bow Knicks would have played today, My feeling is, boy,
[36:42] Speaker 1: that would be hard not to take Denver. Bow just
[36:44] Speaker 1: played the best game of his career. It's interesting nobody
[36:46] Speaker 1: likes Bo Nicks or Sam Darnold. I mean that Donald
[36:50] Speaker 1: was great today and bow Knicks I think I probably
[36:52] Speaker 1: would have probably would have taken Denver if bow Knicks plays.
[36:58] Speaker 1: But yeah, I mean, let's and I think it's a
[37:00] Speaker 1: good super Bowl. I think you have you have the
[37:02] Speaker 1: Robert Kraft returns, Vrabel and Drake May story is at
[37:06] Speaker 1: the next Tom Brady. So I think that's a great play.
[37:09] Speaker 1: And I think you have a seah Ok team. I
[37:10] Speaker 1: think the Sam Darnold redemption story is a real thing.
[37:13] Speaker 1: And listen, these are two really well run organizations, Seattle
[37:18] Speaker 1: trying to win a second Super Bowl with a new coach,
[37:20] Speaker 1: a new quarterback. I mean it's it's I think you
[37:24] Speaker 1: and I have talked about this, and I think the
[37:26] Speaker 1: audience has heard us say this is Seattle's GM. He
[37:30] Speaker 1: may not make as many deals as Howie Rose, but
[37:33] Speaker 1: there's an argument John Snyder in terms of just drafting
[37:36] Speaker 1: college athletes is the best we have in the sport.
[37:39] Speaker 1: He does not miss much at all.
[37:43] Speaker 2: I mean, well, I mean, look at the guys making
[37:45] Speaker 2: plays for him today. You saw, you know, the guard
[37:48] Speaker 2: from North Dakota State. You see are you making plays
[37:51] Speaker 2: left and right? You see? I mean Cooper Club as
[37:54] Speaker 2: an acquisition, well, I'd even say Jackson Smith when people
[37:58] Speaker 2: took him, he was good. But no one thought he
[38:00] Speaker 2: was going to be this and they pivoted off DK Metcalf.
[38:03] Speaker 2: They're like, we need him out of here so we
[38:04] Speaker 2: can feature that, which I don't blame them for trading DK,
[38:07] Speaker 2: but they thought highly more highly of Jackson Smith, and
[38:10] Speaker 2: I think I definitely I did. I mean they should
[38:12] Speaker 2: he led the league in receiving. I mean he was
[38:14] Speaker 2: basically Jerry Rice for like eighty percent of the first
[38:16] Speaker 2: half of the season. And to me, the thing with
[38:19] Speaker 2: Vrabel is how often it probably happened more in like
[38:24] Speaker 2: the seventies and eighties, former big time players would become coaches. Now,
[38:29] Speaker 2: with the money that these coach did, these players had made,
[38:32] Speaker 2: they're less likely to become into the grind of coaching
[38:35] Speaker 2: and nice Demiko's obviously kind of rare. But Vrabel he'd
[38:38] Speaker 2: be the first guy to ever win a Super Bowl
[38:40] Speaker 2: as a player with the team and then coach that
[38:42] Speaker 2: same team and win a Super Bowl. So they didn't
[38:45] Speaker 2: lose a road game. I think Kraft gave him the
[38:47] Speaker 2: ball after the game. I mean, this team has been
[38:51] Speaker 2: I thought they would be good and make the playoffs
[38:53] Speaker 2: because of their schedule, but being the Super Bowl, you
[38:56] Speaker 2: can't you can't luck your win to the super Bowl,
[38:59] Speaker 2: especially when you're the one seed that means you gotta
[39:01] Speaker 2: win three games. So it's you'd be like, well, this
[39:03] Speaker 2: wasn't a great Charger team. They still got Jim Harbond
[39:05] Speaker 2: and Justin Herbert and Jesse Minter just became the Ravens coach,
[39:09] Speaker 2: like they got a pretty that's that's a pretty buttoned
[39:11] Speaker 2: up operation, right, and then Demiko Ryans to beat that
[39:14] Speaker 2: defense and then today to win a game in these
[39:18] Speaker 2: conditions on the road. I mean, Rabel.
[39:22] Speaker 1: When it comes to you, I don't know.
[39:23] Speaker 2: It's fantastic.
[39:24] Speaker 1: Yeah, clock management, it's he's the opposite of Mike McCarthy,
[39:30] Speaker 1: where his clock management is maybe the best ever. His
[39:34] Speaker 1: use of timeouts are sensational. Vrabel is so good it's
[39:38] Speaker 1: squeezing all these situational plays in his favor. Let's end
[39:48] Speaker 1: it with this. Mike McCarthy got hired by the Pittsburgh Steelers,
[39:53] Speaker 1: and as we talk about the Patriots Seahawks, let's just
[39:56] Speaker 1: give this five minutes. So McCarthy to me is an
[40:02] Speaker 1: offensive Mike Tomlin. He feels like Pittsburgh he'll win games.
[40:09] Speaker 1: He'll be loose when they face a really well coached
[40:14] Speaker 1: team with a good quarterback, you'll feel like you have
[40:16] Speaker 1: the second best coach. But he's a good motivator like Tomlin.
[40:21] Speaker 1: In defense, he does no offense. His teams play with
[40:26] Speaker 1: great enthusiasm. But to me, Pittsburgh once again is always
[40:31] Speaker 1: reminding us how important Pittsburgh is and how they really
[40:35] Speaker 1: love Pittsburgh. They love to hire Pittsburgh guys. They you know,
[40:39] Speaker 1: they draft Kenny Pickett, they hire Mike McCarthy. It's kind
[40:42] Speaker 1: of a Pittsburgh thing. They're the inserts. They're very proud.
[40:46] Speaker 1: I thought they could have done better. I mean, I probably,
[40:50] Speaker 1: I don't know if Chris Schule is the answer. You
[40:51] Speaker 1: could hire him tomorrow.
[40:53] Speaker 2: What did you make of the higher I feel like
[40:56] Speaker 2: the reaction was shocked, people like they really hired Mike McCarthy.
[41:00] Speaker 2: I honestly, when John Harbaugh got fired, my jaw hit
[41:04] Speaker 2: the floor just because I didn't expect him to get fired.
[41:08] Speaker 2: This was a situation where I went, of course, they
[41:10] Speaker 2: hired him, the owner whatever.
[41:12] Speaker 1: It was.
[41:12] Speaker 2: Two weeks ago when Tomlin steps down said I'm not
[41:15] Speaker 2: into throwing a season away. We do not plan on
[41:19] Speaker 2: tanking losing. We plan on competing every year. That showed
[41:23] Speaker 2: me when everyone in the Pittsburgh fan base was tired
[41:26] Speaker 2: of Tomlin, the Roonies were not. They like going nine
[41:31] Speaker 2: or ten wins. If that is there, you know the floor.
[41:34] Speaker 2: They want no part of the tanking teams. They don't
[41:36] Speaker 2: ever want to have a season like the Jets. So
[41:38] Speaker 2: Mike McCarthy represents at minimum stability of competing and at
[41:43] Speaker 2: least giving us a chance to maintain what Tomlin has done.
[41:47] Speaker 2: And he can say I can coach quarterbacks and call
[41:50] Speaker 2: the offense because in fairness he's right now. I was
[41:53] Speaker 2: thinking about this. This is going to be his first situation.
[41:56] Speaker 2: When he got hired with the Green Bay Packers, Brett
[41:59] Speaker 2: Farv was on the roster and the year before they
[42:01] Speaker 2: had drafted Aaron Rodgers. He was the offensive coordinator of
[42:04] Speaker 2: the Niners who took Alex Smith. Aaron Rodgers talked about
[42:08] Speaker 2: this like he had to get over it a little bit.
[42:10] Speaker 2: Then when he went to the Cowboys, they had an
[42:11] Speaker 2: established Dak Prescott. He's now going to a team where
[42:15] Speaker 2: they don't have a quarterback, right, so he's got to
[42:19] Speaker 2: be involved in which you and I watched a lot
[42:22] Speaker 2: of college football. This ain't a great quarterback draft, and
[42:25] Speaker 2: I don't know who's really on the open mar you know,
[42:27] Speaker 2: the Davis Mills and Mac Jones type. There's not a
[42:30] Speaker 2: lot of There's no Dak Prescott's or Aaron Rodgers walking
[42:32] Speaker 2: through that door this job. I don't know if you
[42:35] Speaker 2: watched the Dolphins, guys, they're two really at the press conference,
[42:39] Speaker 2: it was like, I see why Troy Aikman likes these
[42:41] Speaker 2: two guys. They're impressive. But Stephen Ross clearly we're gonna
[42:44] Speaker 2: need a little bit of a reset and be bad
[42:47] Speaker 2: before we get good because we're in shambles. It's kind
[42:49] Speaker 2: of the Steelers, a lot of old guys, a lot
[42:51] Speaker 2: of bad money. Why not once upon a time you
[42:54] Speaker 2: did this with Mike Tomlin at thirty four. Now the
[42:56] Speaker 2: difference is that team was equipped to if Tomlin was good,
[43:00] Speaker 2: they were going to be good than they were, But like,
[43:03] Speaker 2: why not just go a little younger, do a reset?
[43:05] Speaker 2: And it's like, well, the Rooneyes don't believe in that,
[43:07] Speaker 2: Like they're at like that's a core value of that family,
[43:10] Speaker 2: which in a weird way I can respect, but I
[43:13] Speaker 2: think this thing is not You know, when he got
[43:14] Speaker 2: to the Cowboys twenty twenty was a fake football year, right, right, remember,
[43:19] Speaker 2: But once he kind of settled down, got dan Quinn,
[43:22] Speaker 2: they were a real team there for four years. Google
[43:25] Speaker 2: who was on that team? Like they had young in
[43:27] Speaker 2: his peak, like a twenty three, twenty four Michael Parsons,
[43:29] Speaker 2: they had Dak Prescott in his prime. They get ceedee
[43:32] Speaker 2: Lamb like that. This is this is not the Steelers
[43:36] Speaker 2: And how are they equipped to acquire any of these players? TJ.
[43:40] Speaker 2: Watt is making a ton of money, he's a lot
[43:43] Speaker 2: of respect for his career, but it's trending the wrong way.
[43:46] Speaker 1: The good news for McCarthy, I think he realizes that.
[43:48] Speaker 1: I think the first thing they have to do to
[43:51] Speaker 1: me is and they're not going to be able to
[43:53] Speaker 1: find their quarterback unless they go get TYS. Simpson. But
[43:56] Speaker 1: let's say they.
[43:57] Speaker 2: Can't get it and in the weather in that that
[44:00] Speaker 2: that division, I don't know.
[44:04] Speaker 1: They have to switch the money from the defense to
[44:06] Speaker 1: the offensive side. So they've had the highest paid defense
[44:08] Speaker 1: four years in a row. So you just in the
[44:11] Speaker 1: way to do that is They've got some very good
[44:13] Speaker 1: young offensive player. Fraser the center, Warren Friar Moose not young,
[44:18] Speaker 1: but he's a good player. They need another wide receiver obviously,
[44:23] Speaker 1: but in the quarterback. But my take is they've got
[44:25] Speaker 1: their offensive lines got some youth in it. The running
[44:28] Speaker 1: back room's got some youth in it. They're dynamic. I
[44:31] Speaker 1: think Friar Moose really good in Washington. Broke his arm,
[44:34] Speaker 1: but you know those are two big bodies, good players.
[44:38] Speaker 1: So and DK Metcalf still athletically in his prime. It's
[44:41] Speaker 1: one of those things where they have to do is
[44:43] Speaker 1: they have to take about six different defensive players and
[44:46] Speaker 1: just get young defensively. If you look at the Seahawks
[44:49] Speaker 1: in the Rams, if you really look at the secret
[44:52] Speaker 1: of it is the Seahawks and the Rams are not
[44:54] Speaker 1: paying a lot of their defensive players. They're not They're
[44:57] Speaker 1: paying their quarterbacks. They're paying like maybe a left tackle
[45:00] Speaker 1: or somebody on the offensive line. They're paying one of
[45:03] Speaker 1: their weapons. But I mean they're if you really look
[45:06] Speaker 1: at what the Kansas City Chiefs have done, as they've
[45:09] Speaker 1: paid Mahomes and Travis Kelcey and a Joe Tooney, they've
[45:13] Speaker 1: kept that defense really really young. So you know, I've
[45:17] Speaker 1: talked to GMS about this going forward. The recipe for
[45:21] Speaker 1: success is you pay for offense. You just keep drafting defense,
[45:25] Speaker 1: stay young and the Rams, who are they paying on
[45:28] Speaker 1: a defense? I mean, nobody's getting paid yet. Same with Seattle.
[45:32] Speaker 1: Murphy will get a lot of money. Leonard Williams probably
[45:35] Speaker 1: makes it pretty some coin. But I think Pittsburgh's got
[45:39] Speaker 1: it all backwards. Pittsburgh paying everybody on defense, so they've
[45:42] Speaker 1: just got They've got a draft about six to seven
[45:44] Speaker 1: different guys. I don't know what their draft picks look like. Whatever,
[45:48] Speaker 1: Just draft defense. Let about four guys walk trade another
[45:52] Speaker 1: and just switch where the money's at. And once they
[45:55] Speaker 1: can do that, then you can go find your quarterback.
[45:57] Speaker 2: If I want to defend McCarthy like he has a
[45:59] Speaker 2: brain issue, because I saw people putting his resume next
[46:03] Speaker 2: to John Harbass looks pretty similar, And google John Harbaugh
[46:06] Speaker 2: the last several years with some of these big leads
[46:08] Speaker 2: a lot of l's. Yeah, google Mike McCarthy's resume next
[46:12] Speaker 2: to Tomlin's resume pretty similar. Not a lot of playoff success.
[46:16] Speaker 2: Recently made the playoffs a bunch people. His branding is bad.
[46:20] Speaker 2: You know, John Harbull gets fired, ten teams are calling
[46:23] Speaker 2: his agent. McCarthy's begging for a job. Last year, no
[46:25] Speaker 2: one will hire him. So this is not McCarthy's better
[46:29] Speaker 2: than the way we speak about him, right, Yeah, because
[46:33] Speaker 2: he can coached. The other thing he's got going for him,
[46:35] Speaker 2: Jesse meant a really impressive defensive coordinator, first time head
[46:38] Speaker 2: coach in a in a pressure pack job. That's not
[46:41] Speaker 2: going to be easy. You know, Zach Taylor is going
[46:43] Speaker 2: to be coaching for his job. Surely this year that
[46:45] Speaker 2: coaching staff there.
[46:46] Speaker 1: Cleveland doesn't have a coach.
[46:47] Speaker 2: I mean, Colin, did you see the story that Cleveland
[46:49] Speaker 2: makes you write an essay to try to get the
[46:52] Speaker 2: this It'd be like you telling me, hey want you
[46:55] Speaker 2: to do a podcast for us, can you write us
[46:56] Speaker 2: a three page essay. It's like, Colin, this is a
[46:58] Speaker 2: verbal medium. You're like, I don't care the coaching is.
[47:01] Speaker 2: It's a verbal job. You don't. You would never write
[47:03] Speaker 2: an essay ever, even your the things the team puts out.
[47:06] Speaker 2: The pr staff does that for you. It's really I
[47:09] Speaker 2: don't want to go talk about the Browns much, but
[47:11] Speaker 2: that's I googled. I couldn't figure it out, but I
[47:13] Speaker 2: would imagine Barry's parents were in academia because I couldn't
[47:18] Speaker 2: even grasp how someone would go the personality test. I
[47:21] Speaker 2: understand it's a big job. I don't know, but doing
[47:24] Speaker 2: homework in essays. So McCarthy and the Steelers have an
[47:27] Speaker 2: advantage on the Browns, but it's I think it's going
[47:30] Speaker 2: to be a little more difficult than his Cowboys stint.
[47:34] Speaker 2: But he also he's been the head coach of the Packers,
[47:37] Speaker 2: the Dallas Cowboys, and the Pittsburgh Steelers. It'd be like
[47:41] Speaker 2: I've been the head coach of the Knicks, the Lakers.
[47:44] Speaker 2: Like Pat Riley's career, he doesn't get any better than
[47:46] Speaker 2: that football wise, going.
[47:47] Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think, and I'll say it about Tomlin
[47:49] Speaker 1: and I'll say it about Mike McCarthy. They are above
[47:51] Speaker 1: average NFL head coaches, and John Harball's not far off.
[47:56] Speaker 1: I think that's fair. Mike McCarthy will you'll win games
[48:00] Speaker 1: with Mike, and he's going to switch a defensive culture
[48:03] Speaker 1: to an offensive culture. So there are some positives. But
[48:05] Speaker 1: I've always thought Tomlin and big games, his teams were
[48:08] Speaker 1: a little loose. Aaron helped slow down the penalty problem
[48:13] Speaker 1: in Pittsburgh. Their offense had been had penalty problems for years.
[48:16] Speaker 1: On offense, Aaron brings in you know his iq EQ.
[48:19] Speaker 1: Their penalties went down, their turnovers went down because of
[48:22] Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers. So it was it was better this year
[48:26] Speaker 1: as forty two year old Aaron Rodgers took control of
[48:28] Speaker 1: the offensive ship, and I think.
[48:31] Speaker 2: He entertains coming back now with Mike.
[48:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, I could see that Aaron's you know, Aaron always
[48:42] Speaker 1: feels a little bit like a grudge holder, but Aaron
[48:46] Speaker 1: also cares what people think. And for him to just retire,
[48:51] Speaker 1: that would feel weird sort of to just retire because
[48:54] Speaker 1: he played so well at the end of the year,
[48:56] Speaker 1: and he'd be like wow, as he retiring because of
[48:58] Speaker 1: McCarthy and the record. I think McCarthy will be better
[49:02] Speaker 1: for Aaron. I think. I think, I mean by and large,
[49:07] Speaker 1: Seattle and maybe New England. The Super Bowl teams are
[49:10] Speaker 1: a little bit of an exception, but usually the offensive
[49:12] Speaker 1: coach helps the quarterback, you know, Vrabel hands the offense
[49:16] Speaker 1: over to Josh McDaniels. But yeah, I could see Aaron
[49:21] Speaker 1: coming back. And I don't think my knock on McCarthy
[49:25] Speaker 1: isn't that he's bad. My knock is it feels like
[49:27] Speaker 1: an offensive Mike Tomlin. I was just looking for a
[49:30] Speaker 1: more dynamic young guy. But Pittsburgh loves Pittsburgh, and I
[49:36] Speaker 1: respect that. I mean, it's you know, there are certain
[49:38] Speaker 1: cities in this country, Saint Louis, Pittsburgh where if you
[49:41] Speaker 1: go to a party and people ask you, oh, where'd
[49:43] Speaker 1: you go to high school? Like, people don't a lot
[49:46] Speaker 1: of people. How many people in your life who are
[49:49] Speaker 1: go getters and have moved to Pittsburgh. It's very much
[49:53] Speaker 1: about Pittsburgh. People love Pittsburgh. People from Saint Louis love
[49:56] Speaker 1: Saint Louis. Not a lot of people moving to Saint
[49:59] Speaker 1: Louis or Hartford. So Pittsburgh's very proud of its history.
[50:04] Speaker 1: A lot of good people they I mean, it's just
[50:08] Speaker 1: it's just it felt like, yeah, that's kind of what
[50:11] Speaker 1: Pittsburgh's gonna do. I was hoping for a bigger swing,
[50:14] Speaker 1: but I don't think they have it in their their makeup,
[50:17] Speaker 1: their DNA.
[50:18] Speaker 2: Rudy's just they can't even fathom. When they see the Jets,
[50:23] Speaker 2: the Titans, the Cardinals and they see that, they can't
[50:25] Speaker 2: even they refuse. Which you know, we talk a lot
[50:29] Speaker 2: about tanking and some of these other sports. It's respectable,
[50:32] Speaker 2: but also in football, you know, the way you guys
[50:35] Speaker 2: got Roethlisberger once upon a time, didn't you draft like
[50:37] Speaker 2: eleventh that wasn't one. But you're not gonna land you know,
[50:40] Speaker 2: most of these starting quarterback You're not gonna find Purtier
[50:44] Speaker 2: or Tom Brady. Typically, right, most of these starting quarterbacks
[50:47] Speaker 2: that are good in the NFL are drafted. Where's Drake
[50:50] Speaker 2: May drafted second? Where sam Donolds drafted third? I mean,
[50:52] Speaker 2: typically you gotta it's okay. The Steeler fans that they've
[50:56] Speaker 2: had enough good times and respectable seasons, they would understand
[51:00] Speaker 2: a five and twelve season to kind of reset the
[51:03] Speaker 2: first course. But the owners refuse. And that's why I
[51:07] Speaker 2: think they did this instead of hiring Davis. Wait, you
[51:10] Speaker 2: know some thirty two year old guy that was like, okay,
[51:14] Speaker 2: we'll have some growing pains with you. McCarthy could sell
[51:17] Speaker 2: them look at my resume. More than likely we will
[51:20] Speaker 2: compete for a playoff spot. And that was probably sold
[51:22] Speaker 2: the Rooneys.
[51:25] Speaker 1: Good stuff, the volume
