Colin reacts to the Monday Night Football double header! He starts with the Bears, and calls them a “broken franchise” and has the perfect coach in mind to fix them (3:30). He weighs in on his rough year of picking football games in “Blazing 5” (14:00) and looks at the terrific 2024 class of rookie quarterbacks and why the quarterback talent entering the league has closed the gap between the “haves” and “have not’s” (16:00). [0:51] Speaker 1: What time is it? Game time? All right? Little Monday
[0:58] Speaker 1: night football reaction Welkins beat the Raiders. Not much to say.
[1:02] Speaker 1: Kirk Cousins is really struggling. Not sure why they don't
[1:05] Speaker 1: put Michael Pennix in he was a highly experienced college
[1:09] Speaker 1: quarterback from Indiana to Washington, played with NFL receivers and
[1:12] Speaker 1: offensive linemen with an NFL level head coach, Kaitlin de Boor,
[1:16] Speaker 1: who I think is really really good. He'll get Alabama
[1:18] Speaker 1: Hammond by next year. I don't get it. Raheem Morris
[1:22] Speaker 1: defensive coach. Maybe he doesn't sense the urgency. I don't
[1:26] Speaker 1: know if there were promises to Kirk Cousins, but if
[1:28] Speaker 1: Michael Pennix isn't better than Kirk Cousins, then that's a
[1:32] Speaker 1: wasted or miss on a first round pick because right
[1:35] Speaker 1: now Kirk Cousins does not have his fastball. Let's talk
[1:40] Speaker 1: about the Chicago Bears. So they lost to the Vikings.
[1:43] Speaker 1: I didn't think Sam Darnold played particularly well, but he's
[1:45] Speaker 1: getting the ball to TJ. Hawkinson, Jordan Addison, and Justin Jefferson,
[1:50] Speaker 1: so he's getting the ball to the right people. I
[1:52] Speaker 1: thought he was a little high, missed some throws, but overall,
[1:56] Speaker 1: Minnesota was picked for third or fourth. I mean, it's
[1:59] Speaker 1: all gravy at this point. First, let's start with the
[2:03] Speaker 1: Chicago Bears. There are a couple franchises in this league
[2:06] Speaker 1: that are just broken, and I think the Chicago Bears
[2:10] Speaker 1: are top of the list. It's a broken franchise. The
[2:14] Speaker 1: mccaskeys are arguably the worst owners in the league, oldest
[2:17] Speaker 1: and among the poorest. Really out of touch. Kevin Warrens
[2:22] Speaker 1: the president. I've been told for years, highly political. Charles
[2:28] Speaker 1: Robinson of Yahoo reporting today that you know somebody that
[2:32] Speaker 1: seeks power and to retain power. That's a little what
[2:37] Speaker 1: I was told years ago. Don't know him personally, but
[2:39] Speaker 1: that's what I've been told from two sources. I trust
[2:43] Speaker 1: Ryan Poles is young. You know, I'm hit and miss
[2:47] Speaker 1: on polls. I love the Monte Montes sweat deal, the
[2:51] Speaker 1: DJ More deal. I don't think he's the problem in
[2:54] Speaker 1: the organization. I think Ryan Poles is struggling with the
[2:59] Speaker 1: people above him. But a great example of the dysfunction,
[3:04] Speaker 1: so Matt Eberflues, a defensive coach, was fired. Well, defensive
[3:09] Speaker 1: coaches don't have the offensive connections that offensive coaches do.
[3:16] Speaker 1: I mean, there is a reason Andy Reid keeps hiring
[3:19] Speaker 1: really good offensive coaches right like their offense. Now, Reid
[3:23] Speaker 1: does most of the play calling, but Doug Peterson got
[3:26] Speaker 1: a head coaching job. Matt Naggy got a head coaching
[3:29] Speaker 1: job and by the way, got Mitt Trubisky to the
[3:32] Speaker 1: playoffs twice. So you can say all you want about
[3:34] Speaker 1: Matt Naggy. You die for Matt Naggy now in Chicago.
[3:38] Speaker 1: And then there's a reason that Belichick had to rely
[3:41] Speaker 1: on Josh McDaniels. When Josh left. You know, Bill was
[3:45] Speaker 1: scrambling to find an offensive coordinator. But Sean McVay can
[3:48] Speaker 1: find one every two years. So Thomas Brown was under
[3:54] Speaker 1: Shane waldron Well. Ibra Flues doesn't have a lot of
[3:57] Speaker 1: great offensive connections, clearly because when Shane waldron Lef left
[4:00] Speaker 1: Chicago of Seattle, he was criticized. They rolled their eyes
[4:04] Speaker 1: at him. He went to Chicago, it was a mess
[4:06] Speaker 1: with Caleb Williams. Then Thomas Brown, who's a bright young guy.
[4:10] Speaker 1: He coached with the Rams, but you know he is
[4:13] Speaker 1: an interim head coach. He's had. This is his third
[4:16] Speaker 1: different job this season with the Bears. I mean, hr
[4:20] Speaker 1: is probably asking him to slow down so they can
[4:22] Speaker 1: get his paycheck, right, I'm not going to blame him,
[4:26] Speaker 1: but eber flu selected this staff and it's not very good.
[4:29] Speaker 1: I think it's a broken franchise. And you know, my
[4:33] Speaker 1: take is, if you're really honest about it, you know
[4:35] Speaker 1: what they remind me of. I was thinking about it tonight.
[4:38] Speaker 1: They remind me a lot. The Bears are the Chargers
[4:42] Speaker 1: last season where they had a talented young quarterback, some
[4:46] Speaker 1: really nice pieces, but major cultural issues and what did
[4:51] Speaker 1: they do. They went and got Jim Harbaugh to fix it.
[4:54] Speaker 1: And that's why Mike Rabel's the higher Vrabel is Dan Campbell,
[4:59] Speaker 1: less reckles. He's Jim Harbaugh, but to this point hasn't
[5:04] Speaker 1: been as successful. He's a really smart guy. He's a
[5:07] Speaker 1: culture changer. There's no bullshit with him. He's very honest
[5:12] Speaker 1: and very upfront, and he got to an AFC championship,
[5:16] Speaker 1: you know, with Tennessee. So I just think Vrabel's the
[5:21] Speaker 1: call here. Vrabel, you know, and I've talked to Mike
[5:24] Speaker 1: about this. Vrabel is the kind of guy that will
[5:28] Speaker 1: come in and the only thing that would get in
[5:31] Speaker 1: his way is a Kevin Warren level executive that was
[5:36] Speaker 1: trying to retain power. If Frabel has some saying personnel,
[5:40] Speaker 1: he's pretty good at that and has a great relationship
[5:43] Speaker 1: with the general manager who he can answer to. And
[5:47] Speaker 1: trust I think Rabel could win immediately. I think, you
[5:51] Speaker 1: know again, I'll say this, the Bears have a Chargers
[5:53] Speaker 1: feel now. The Chargers are not going to go from
[5:57] Speaker 1: what they were last year to a Super Bowl. Need
[6:00] Speaker 1: another draft. They have to hit on another receiver, maybe
[6:03] Speaker 1: another tight end, another running back. They need more pieces offensively,
[6:08] Speaker 1: and the Bears with Rabel are not winning a super Bowl,
[6:11] Speaker 1: especially out of that division. And I think the Bears
[6:14] Speaker 1: need to shore up the offensive line, but more than that,
[6:17] Speaker 1: you know, maybe another edge rusher. More than that, I
[6:20] Speaker 1: think it's just a cultural modification is what they need.
[6:23] Speaker 1: But it's rough. I mean, you can say what you
[6:26] Speaker 1: want about the Jets and Woody Johnson and I think
[6:28] Speaker 1: he's one of the weaker owners, but they have a
[6:30] Speaker 1: good roster. Aaron's played well in the last three to
[6:33] Speaker 1: four weeks. He's had one hundred plus passer rating I
[6:35] Speaker 1: think on average over the last four weeks. The Giants
[6:38] Speaker 1: have issues, but you know, there's some pieces there that
[6:42] Speaker 1: defensive front and l Mars don't want to fire Brian
[6:46] Speaker 1: Dable because they've run through coaches, but the team looks
[6:49] Speaker 1: like they've quit. But with Chicago, there's just I mean,
[6:52] Speaker 1: there's just not much to like. I like Montes Sweat
[6:54] Speaker 1: and Jalen Johnson. I like Caleb Williams. You know DJ
[6:59] Speaker 1: Moore if the running back. There's some Pete Cole comment,
[7:02] Speaker 1: there's some pieces I like, But I don't know what
[7:04] Speaker 1: you do other than hire Mike Rabel. This is not
[7:08] Speaker 1: a job for a coordinator. Give me a break. You're
[7:10] Speaker 1: not going to get a Ben Johnson here, Bobby Slowick.
[7:13] Speaker 1: It's not going to turn this thing around. You're a
[7:15] Speaker 1: mile from that. And I'll make this argument, I think,
[7:19] Speaker 1: And I talked to Mike Vrabel about this, and my
[7:22] Speaker 1: suggestion to him is, I'm not sure if I take
[7:24] Speaker 1: a job this year, I think next year you could
[7:27] Speaker 1: have much more attractive openings. If Joe Burrow is getting
[7:31] Speaker 1: really tired of Zach Taylor, the coach of Cincinnati, they
[7:35] Speaker 1: won't fire him at the end of this year, But
[7:38] Speaker 1: if Joe Burrow makes demands, Zach Taylor's in trouble next
[7:42] Speaker 1: year for Joe Burrow to ream Zach Taylor out, knowing
[7:45] Speaker 1: he's on TV the way he reamed him out. Burrow's
[7:48] Speaker 1: got no time for this nonsense in Cincinnati, So that
[7:52] Speaker 1: job could be open next year. I think Mike McCarthy
[7:55] Speaker 1: in Dallas, I think he's probably saved his job, right,
[7:58] Speaker 1: he's probably saved it. And if Dallas can move Michael
[8:01] Speaker 1: Parsons get a couple of first round picks, hit on
[8:03] Speaker 1: those you know, who knows. But also I think that
[8:07] Speaker 1: could be open. So, you know, seven different coaches get
[8:11] Speaker 1: whacked every year. I just don't like the job openings.
[8:15] Speaker 1: I love Caleb Williams Chicago. To me, is it feels
[8:20] Speaker 1: like quicksand for a coach. You know, Jacksonville's got an opening.
[8:26] Speaker 1: There's a reason everybody fails here in Jacksonville. It just
[8:30] Speaker 1: since Tom Coughlin left, it's just dead coach walking. Nobody
[8:35] Speaker 1: works there. So there's got to be something systemic within
[8:38] Speaker 1: the organization. And I think what you're really seeing now.
[8:44] Speaker 1: And I was having this discussion this weekend with somebody
[8:49] Speaker 1: I respect a lot, and he said, you know, you
[8:52] Speaker 1: just you start looking around this league and it's just
[8:55] Speaker 1: the power of ten. There's about ten good gms, ted
[8:58] Speaker 1: good oders, ten good quarterbacks, ten good left tackles, and
[9:03] Speaker 1: I just don't like. If you're Mike Vrabel, I don't
[9:05] Speaker 1: like what's out there. I love Chicago. It's a great city.
[9:09] Speaker 1: They're good pieces. But man, anybody watching this show, watching
[9:14] Speaker 1: this podcast, or listening, it does not matter how good
[9:17] Speaker 1: the employees are. If ownership and management is sideways, it
[9:22] Speaker 1: doesn't matter. I've said this before. I've been really fortunate.
[9:27] Speaker 1: I had a really good ownership in Las Vegas my
[9:30] Speaker 1: first job. Obviously, ESPN and Fox are well run companies.
[9:37] Speaker 1: At Portland, I thought we had good ownership, good management.
[9:41] Speaker 1: I worked in Tampa for a couple of years and
[9:45] Speaker 1: really really talented people in the newsroom, photo journalists, producers, reporters, anchors.
[9:52] Speaker 1: It was not the employees. I thought management was a
[9:56] Speaker 1: circus and I'll just it at that, and you couldn't
[10:02] Speaker 1: overcome it. And it was a real learning moment for me,
[10:06] Speaker 1: is that the employee base was the best I'd ever
[10:09] Speaker 1: worked with. At the time, I thought there was just
[10:11] Speaker 1: so many talented people. Our sports department was just really fun, clever,
[10:16] Speaker 1: smart people. But you can't you can't, like in Chicago,
[10:19] Speaker 1: it doesn't matter if Rabel's the coach and he's trying
[10:23] Speaker 1: to change things eventually, if people are political upstairs, I
[10:27] Speaker 1: mean it's it's like, look at the Jets, they fire
[10:30] Speaker 1: Robert Sali the best coach on the staff. I mean,
[10:33] Speaker 1: going into a game against Buffalo, if they won it,
[10:35] Speaker 1: there they were in first place. I mean they fired
[10:37] Speaker 1: Joe Douglas. Well, Douglas got Devonte Adams, who's playing great now.
[10:42] Speaker 1: Joe Douglas missed on a quarterback. But Joe Douglass. That
[10:47] Speaker 1: Jets roster they've got, dudes, I mean they really do.
[10:51] Speaker 1: They're going to get another very good first round pick
[10:53] Speaker 1: this year. They've got a left tackle for the future,
[10:56] Speaker 1: they've got their corner, they've got weapons. I mean, they
[10:59] Speaker 1: can really be selected. The Jets could move down in
[11:02] Speaker 1: the first round and get four or five. You know,
[11:06] Speaker 1: if they moved down and got another second round pick
[11:09] Speaker 1: or a second and a fourth round pick, you could
[11:11] Speaker 1: have five new starters on the team next year. And
[11:13] Speaker 1: I think the Jets, I mean, they really have their weapons.
[11:16] Speaker 1: They have their left tackle, the Penn State kid, a
[11:18] Speaker 1: couple of good receivers, good corners, pass rushers. So I mean,
[11:22] Speaker 1: I I mean I thought saw when Joe Douglas were capable.
[11:26] Speaker 1: They're both out. So there's nothing you can do if
[11:29] Speaker 1: upstairs is messed up. There's just in my experience in life,
[11:33] Speaker 1: there's nothing you can do, you know. It's I make
[11:37] Speaker 1: picks blazing five, and I had another terrible week. Generally,
[11:41] Speaker 1: I've been doing this blazing five thing for like twenty years,
[11:44] Speaker 1: and on average I hit about fifty six percent, fifty
[11:47] Speaker 1: five fifty seven percent. This is my worst year easily.
[11:49] Speaker 1: I don't know why. I've just struggled all year long,
[11:53] Speaker 1: but I'm actually it's funny because on the bigger preseason
[11:56] Speaker 1: predictions for division champions, I've actually had the best year
[12:00] Speaker 1: I've ever had. I had Buffalo, Kansas City, Baltimore and
[12:04] Speaker 1: the Texans winning their division. If Baltimore beats the Steelers Saturday,
[12:08] Speaker 1: I'll be four for four. Heading to the last couple
[12:10] Speaker 1: of weeks, I had Philly, the Rams, Green Bay, and
[12:13] Speaker 1: the Falcons winning their divisions. Philly and the Rams du lead.
[12:16] Speaker 1: Green Bay and the Falcons still have a shot, although
[12:20] Speaker 1: Atlanta right now they'll beating the Raiders tonight. They got
[12:23] Speaker 1: to get quarterbacks solved. My two dark horse teams were
[12:27] Speaker 1: Washington and Denver. They'll both make the playoffs. So I
[12:32] Speaker 1: actually have in terms of predictions, I think I've had
[12:35] Speaker 1: a really good year. I don't know why I'm struggling
[12:37] Speaker 1: so much. I've just been out of rhythm. You know.
[12:40] Speaker 1: The weekends I take favorites, they go belly up. The
[12:44] Speaker 1: weekends I take dogs. I have the wrong ones. But
[12:47] Speaker 1: I love doing it, and I always feel bad. I
[12:49] Speaker 1: don't mind losing money. I don't like anybody else to
[12:51] Speaker 1: lose it. But I'm'm picking football games for so long.
[12:56] Speaker 1: An old story. When I first moved to Las Vegas,
[12:59] Speaker 1: I had no money, I was out of college, and
[13:02] Speaker 1: I drove down to Vegas in a blue AMC Pacer
[13:07] Speaker 1: that later caught fire. A couple of years later, on
[13:09] Speaker 1: Charleston and Oak Streets in Las Vegas, I had Texaco
[13:13] Speaker 1: station I pulled in my car was on fire. And
[13:16] Speaker 1: I remember when I first moved to Vegas, I'd never
[13:18] Speaker 1: met football games, and so I was a huge Pack
[13:21] Speaker 1: ten fan, and so I really started hitting on a
[13:26] Speaker 1: lot of Pac ten picks because all the games weren't televised.
[13:30] Speaker 1: I knew the Pacific Northwest teams really well because I
[13:32] Speaker 1: was from there. I remember one year I think I
[13:35] Speaker 1: was like ten and one on Oregon State games. I
[13:38] Speaker 1: just could not miss on the Beavers. And I just
[13:41] Speaker 1: love picking football games. But I have stunk this year.
[13:46] Speaker 1: And what's interesting is that Nick Wright and Danny Parkins
[13:49] Speaker 1: at FS one have both been on fire, hitting like
[13:52] Speaker 1: sixty five percent. So congrats to those guys. But you know,
[13:56] Speaker 1: my overall takeaway really on the playoffs this year is
[14:00] Speaker 1: there's not a lot of surprises. I mean, right now,
[14:03] Speaker 1: I have If Baltimore beats the Steelers Saturday, i'll have
[14:07] Speaker 1: six of the eight teams I picked to win the
[14:09] Speaker 1: division winning and Green Band and the Falcons close. What
[14:13] Speaker 1: is pretty clear, and the reason I picked those teams
[14:16] Speaker 1: to win the division was like head coach and quarterback.
[14:19] Speaker 1: And so I think the one thing I look at
[14:22] Speaker 1: this year is a real positive. I think Caleb can play.
[14:25] Speaker 1: I think Jayden Daniels can play. I think Boon Nicks
[14:27] Speaker 1: can play. My guess is JJ McCarthy can play. I
[14:30] Speaker 1: don't know what the hell's going on with Michael Pennix,
[14:32] Speaker 1: because I really liked him out of college. I thought
[14:34] Speaker 1: he was a bigger, stronger, better deep ball to and
[14:37] Speaker 1: TWOA is more than capable, but he just can't throw
[14:39] Speaker 1: the ball deep down field. He's not good against pressure
[14:43] Speaker 1: or really elite defenses are in cold weather, you have
[14:46] Speaker 1: to qualify everything with Tua. I think Panicstows a much
[14:49] Speaker 1: better sharper deep ball, stronger, longer, just a bigger athlete.
[14:56] Speaker 1: But I think we have a chance to go five
[14:58] Speaker 1: for five with quarterback. And this is not a great
[15:02] Speaker 1: quarterback year in college. But if the quarterbacks go four
[15:06] Speaker 1: for five or five for five this group of quarterbacks,
[15:08] Speaker 1: it will be the third draft since around twenty eighteen
[15:13] Speaker 1: where you've had multiple first round quarterbacks hit. And I
[15:18] Speaker 1: don't think we'll ever get to a saturation point where
[15:21] Speaker 1: you know everybody's got their quarterback. But I don't remember
[15:25] Speaker 1: a time where there were this many good quarterbacks. I mean,
[15:30] Speaker 1: I mean, even Aaron Rodgers in the last month has
[15:33] Speaker 1: been unbelievable. Jordan Love, Jaylen Hurts. This weekend was sensational.
[15:39] Speaker 1: You know, bo Nicks makes mistakes, but he's clearly a
[15:42] Speaker 1: franchise guy. His toughness, his athletic ability. He's got a
[15:46] Speaker 1: better arm I think in the pros and I thought
[15:48] Speaker 1: he had in college. So I think, big picture, as
[15:51] Speaker 1: the league's become more have and have nots, I think
[15:54] Speaker 1: we had another bumper quarterback draft class. I only saw
[15:58] Speaker 1: JJ McCarthy in the preseason, but in the couple appearances,
[16:02] Speaker 1: I thought he was really quick, really nimble, and he
[16:07] Speaker 1: reminded me a little bit of Sam Darnold that he
[16:10] Speaker 1: was really aggressive. And I think Kevin O'Connell's proven the
[16:14] Speaker 1: Vikings head coach, he can coach a lot of that
[16:16] Speaker 1: out of you. And another part of this quarterback journey
[16:20] Speaker 1: is there's better quarterback coaches. I mean this, so I
[16:23] Speaker 1: think the guy down in Tampa, Liam Cohen under Baker Mayfield,
[16:27] Speaker 1: who was briefly in Los Angeles, I think he's going
[16:29] Speaker 1: to get looks. I think the quality of offensive coaching
[16:33] Speaker 1: has really improved. That's why you're seeing Donald and Baker
[16:36] Speaker 1: Mayfield a rebirth. I think there's sensational coaching offensively. I
[16:41] Speaker 1: didn't feel that fifteen years ago in the NFL. I
[16:44] Speaker 1: think it's everywhere, and I think the talent's everywhere. So
[16:49] Speaker 1: I mean, yesterday we had a really ugly one o'clock window.
[16:52] Speaker 1: It was the first time all year I was bored
[16:55] Speaker 1: watching the NFL where I thought, man, this is just
[16:58] Speaker 1: a batterly window. But I mean this weekend, the college
[17:02] Speaker 1: and the pro games this weekend, starting Friday night in
[17:04] Speaker 1: the en at Notre Dame. The next Friday, Saturday Sunday
[17:07] Speaker 1: could be the most sensational three day stretch of football
[17:11] Speaker 1: any year, and a lot of it is because of
[17:14] Speaker 1: quarterback play and very sharp offensive coaching. The volume well,
[17:21] Speaker 1: it's the most wonderful time of the year for getting
[17:23] Speaker 1: in on all the basketball, football hockey action at DraftKings
[17:26] Speaker 1: sports Book. It's the season of giving, so we're being
[17:28] Speaker 1: gifted college football and basketball, pro football, basketball, pro hockey
[17:32] Speaker 1: to almost twenty four to seven. It's an absolutely great
