Colin’s top takes of the week. First, Colin is joined by Doug Gottlieb, men’s basketball coach at University of Wisconsin Green Bay They start by reacting to UConn’s last second win over Duke in the Elite 8 quarterfinals (3:30), break down the Big Ten’s dominance in the tournament (12:30) and preview a stacked NBA draft class and debate who should be the top 5 lottery picks (16:30) Then he’s joined by Danny Parkins, host of “First Things First” at FS1. They start with Tiger Woods crashing his car in another suspected DUI, and discuss why his value is so high to the PGA and sponsors that they’ll never cut ties with him. They recap Tiger’s history of surgeries and why it’s likely he’s developed a reliance on opioids to deal with chronic pain and that he probably should never be behind the wheel of a car (27:00). They react to the potential of the NFL using replacement referees after contract talks broke down. Colin argues that NFL officials overwhelmingly get calls right and paying full-time officials won’t make the product better, and that the only argument for full-time refs is the NFL has the money. Danny believes HD television with multiple slow-motion replays has been the cause for so much complaining about the refs (33:00). (Timestamps may vary based on advertisements.) [0:01] Speaker 1: The volume.
[0:03] Speaker 2: Today's show is brought to you by are presenting sponsor
[0:06] Speaker 2: American Beverage. If you think about some of the most
[0:08] Speaker 2: iconic drinks in the country, the ones you grab a barbecue,
[0:12] Speaker 2: the ones you raised to celebrate your team, that have
[0:15] Speaker 2: been part of your story for decades, Coke, Doctor Pepper, Pepsi,
[0:18] Speaker 2: there's something people don't always think about. The companies behind
[0:21] Speaker 2: those brands are still making their drinks right here in
[0:23] Speaker 2: the US. While there's a lot of talk about bringing
[0:25] Speaker 2: manufacturing back, America's beverage companies never left their American companies,
[0:29] Speaker 2: making American products with American workers in America's hometown. So
[0:32] Speaker 2: two hundred and seventy five thousand men and women across
[0:35] Speaker 2: all fifty states, real jobs, good paying jobs, the kind
[0:38] Speaker 2: of jobs you can raise a family on. So more
[0:39] Speaker 2: than one hundred years, those brands have been part of
[0:42] Speaker 2: everyday lives and they're still here, still investing, still operating
[0:45] Speaker 2: in communities around the country. So if you care about
[0:47] Speaker 2: strong old economies and companies that walk the walk, check
[0:50] Speaker 2: out the good work and what they're doing it. We
[0:52] Speaker 2: deliver for America dot Org. All right, Well, it's March
[1:02] Speaker 2: and it's madness. There weren't a ton of upsets in
[1:06] Speaker 2: the tournament. I guess Iowa over Florida is the big one.
[1:09] Speaker 2: So I got you know, I Michigan and Arizona are
[1:13] Speaker 2: the two best teams I've seen. And I thought, I'm
[1:15] Speaker 2: gonna call Doug Gottlieb coaching now the Green Bay Phoenix.
[1:18] Speaker 2: Second year they finished third in the Horizon League. His
[1:20] Speaker 2: first years, his top scores all got hurt. Second year,
[1:24] Speaker 2: he builds it back up and they were very viable
[1:27] Speaker 2: to the very end. And I've been keeping in contact
[1:30] Speaker 2: with Doug in his basketball journey, and I thought, let's
[1:33] Speaker 2: get him on here and talk about a lot of
[1:34] Speaker 2: different stuff. I told Doug today, I said, Hey, this
[1:39] Speaker 2: Yukon Duke game, it's getting lobsided. If you want to
[1:41] Speaker 2: if you want to record this early, it's like, hold on.
[1:45] Speaker 2: It's it's it's Dan Early. Let's hold on. And he
[1:48] Speaker 2: was right. So it's good seeing you. We've talked several times,
[1:52] Speaker 2: you know, Doug. It's funny about Yukon. I mean, we
[1:54] Speaker 2: both lived there for a long time. It's really they're
[1:57] Speaker 2: like a pitcher who gets better in the later innings.
[2:00] Speaker 2: They're so good in the second half, they just wear
[2:02] Speaker 2: you down. They're so physical. The Boozer kids had a
[2:06] Speaker 2: couple of bad turnovers. It's just like they're kind of
[2:10] Speaker 2: built for March. The refs let you play a little
[2:12] Speaker 2: bit like the NBA playoffs, the games get physical. Were
[2:16] Speaker 2: you shocked they came back to beat Duke?
[2:20] Speaker 3: Yes, yeah, from this perspective, you know again, like you
[2:24] Speaker 3: watch it, I've always watched it a little bit differently
[2:26] Speaker 3: right in my analyst days. Now as a coach, you
[2:29] Speaker 3: watch it completely differently, And I was so impressed by
[2:32] Speaker 3: Duke's prepperedness for all of what Yukon does you know,
[2:36] Speaker 3: Yukon's post double. They just sliced it and diced it
[2:39] Speaker 3: for the first know, two thirds of the game. And
[2:43] Speaker 3: then Yukon they don't really they don't really have They
[2:47] Speaker 3: have a half court offense, but they run a lot
[2:48] Speaker 3: of sets and pre planned stuff. And when you have
[2:51] Speaker 3: one day to prep you can't really you can't prep
[2:55] Speaker 3: for everything. Somebody does, you know, so so you got it.
[2:59] Speaker 3: You have to You have to have had kind of
[3:01] Speaker 3: the fundamental core. This is what we do when this
[3:05] Speaker 3: type of set, when this type of offense, if it's
[3:07] Speaker 3: a zoom you know, if it's an away action, if
[3:10] Speaker 3: it's a ball screen whatever. Again, like I watch, I'm
[3:13] Speaker 3: watching this game, going, man, how does Duke know everything
[3:17] Speaker 3: that Yukon's doing and they're using it against them? Empty
[3:20] Speaker 3: side ball screens, easy dunk layup. And then something just changed,
[3:25] Speaker 3: you know, where they started to get stops. They got
[3:28] Speaker 3: a couple run throughs, hit a couple of shots. You know,
[3:31] Speaker 3: Mullins hit the big three obviously to win it, but
[3:34] Speaker 3: he missed one right before the TV timeout with like
[3:37] Speaker 3: twelve and change, and I was like, ah, they're not
[3:40] Speaker 3: going to get over that hump, you know, because they
[3:42] Speaker 3: had other opportunities to get to get it back to
[3:45] Speaker 3: where all of a sudden you get some clenching from
[3:48] Speaker 3: from Duke. So I just again, that's it. It's an
[3:51] Speaker 3: incredible staff and Danny's there's no perfect coach, there's no
[3:55] Speaker 3: perfect people. But the one thing Danny is is a fighter.
[3:58] Speaker 3: And you know his whole sideline demeanor which everybody talks about,
[4:04] Speaker 3: it's all directed at the officials and the crowd.
[4:06] Speaker 4: It's not directed at players. Yeah. Now, look, I can't
[4:10] Speaker 4: get away with it. You know, I gotta tea this year,
[4:12] Speaker 4: I didn't say anything like it's crazy, but he he
[4:17] Speaker 4: pushes that.
[4:17] Speaker 3: But but what it does is he fights for his
[4:20] Speaker 3: players to the very last moment, and the players are
[4:24] Speaker 3: The players play above their level.
[4:26] Speaker 4: Of toughness, if that makes any sense.
[4:28] Speaker 3: Like he's got tough he's got tough kids, but they
[4:31] Speaker 3: play even tougher because they got that maniac in there
[4:34] Speaker 3: on the sideline.
[4:35] Speaker 4: I think that's all part of why it works. Yeah. Yeah.
[4:39] Speaker 2: I mean for a while it was terrorist Reid against Doper.
[4:43] Speaker 2: I mean seriously, he was the offense and it was
[4:46] Speaker 2: It was funny because I kept thinking, oh man, they
[4:48] Speaker 2: just need a Stefan Castle. They just they don't.
[4:51] Speaker 4: They don't have to be That's that's what this team
[4:53] Speaker 4: is missing.
[4:54] Speaker 3: They don't have a throw it to the dude, He's
[4:56] Speaker 3: gonna go get you a bucket guy.
[4:57] Speaker 4: What that?
[4:58] Speaker 2: Yeah, you know they were thirtieth in the country. I
[5:02] Speaker 2: mean I watched them get blown out by Marquette. I mean,
[5:04] Speaker 2: they just have nights when they can't hit shots. But
[5:08] Speaker 2: there is a toughness to Yukon. I mean, I've just
[5:10] Speaker 2: always liked the program. And what's interesting you go from Calhoun, who,
[5:15] Speaker 2: like Hurley, just preached toughness, just just grind and it
[5:19] Speaker 2: took him a while. They had Kevin Ollie, they had coaches,
[5:21] Speaker 2: and then they find Hurley. Hurley's a little bit of
[5:23] Speaker 2: an extension of Calhoun where he's just really tough. Yeah,
[5:29] Speaker 2: they kind of found their secret sauce. It's not the
[5:31] Speaker 2: sexiest program, but they always have length, they always have toughness,
[5:35] Speaker 2: They play defense. You know, it's interesting in Michigan Arizona
[5:40] Speaker 2: looks like the Marquee game. But you know, be careful
[5:42] Speaker 2: because Yukon and Illinois are great in your world. It's
[5:47] Speaker 2: fascinating about this. So Illinois has a player that was
[5:51] Speaker 2: the two hundred and sixty first ranked player in high school.
[5:56] Speaker 2: I mean literally, a small town public high school guy,
[6:00] Speaker 2: the Keaton Wagler kid. And he shows up he may
[6:03] Speaker 2: be a lottery pick. And what's fascinating about college basketball
[6:08] Speaker 2: is that. And you're in this world now you have
[6:11] Speaker 2: to project a lot I mean even in an NBA draft. Now,
[6:16] Speaker 2: some of these guys are nineteen twenty years old in
[6:18] Speaker 2: the NFL draft, as you know, a lot of guys's
[6:20] Speaker 2: been in school four years. I got three years of
[6:21] Speaker 2: playing tape. You know, I don't have to project. I
[6:24] Speaker 2: kind of know if you have good feet, bad hands
[6:27] Speaker 2: when you recruit, how much do you know, like with
[6:30] Speaker 2: this kind of kid, and how much are you just
[6:32] Speaker 2: kind of hoping?
[6:34] Speaker 4: Well, here's what I'm gonna do. Let me tell you
[6:35] Speaker 4: a story.
[6:36] Speaker 3: I'm gonna do a storytell with Collins that I call
[6:38] Speaker 3: him do in storytime. So his au coach is a
[6:41] Speaker 3: guy named Victor Williams. Victor Williams was the point guard
[6:45] Speaker 3: after I graduate. He redshirted because he transferred in Familiarly
[6:47] Speaker 3: State my senior year. And so Vic runs his own program.
[6:52] Speaker 3: It's independent in Kansasity, Missouri. And when I tell you,
[6:55] Speaker 3: he called everybody everybody and said, hey, I have a problem.
[7:01] Speaker 3: And now he's on an independent circuit. So some of
[7:04] Speaker 3: this is that he's on it. It's he's on a
[7:07] Speaker 3: circuit called recruit Look. And and you know I was
[7:13] Speaker 3: there this summer. I mean I learned my lesson really
[7:17] Speaker 3: really early, and that you just have to be so
[7:19] Speaker 3: thorough because there's gonna be guys that fall through the cracks.
[7:22] Speaker 3: So remember what's happened since covid is guys are getting
[7:25] Speaker 3: extra years. You know Yaksol Landenberg, you know he he's
[7:30] Speaker 3: been in school since the Beatles were out, you know,
[7:33] Speaker 3: Like I mean, it's so so the trend in college
[7:39] Speaker 3: basketball has been get old staled. That's everybody says, get
[7:42] Speaker 3: old stalled. And after my first year, at the end
[7:44] Speaker 3: of the year, we had eight freshmen, one junior, one sophomore,
[7:48] Speaker 3: and I was like, man, I got it. I told
[7:50] Speaker 3: my staff, I said, look, we're a nightclub. Okay, twenty
[7:54] Speaker 3: one and over. Nobody gets in twenty one and over, right,
[7:58] Speaker 3: But then you saw this year the freshman class has
[8:01] Speaker 3: been outstanding, and he's the one that was most overlooked.
[8:04] Speaker 3: And I think he was most overlooked because he wasn't
[8:06] Speaker 3: on the shoe circuit.
[8:08] Speaker 4: He was how about this one? He was loyal to
[8:12] Speaker 4: his AAU coach, right, he was.
[8:14] Speaker 3: There's one of the best AU programs in the country
[8:20] Speaker 3: is called mocn MO can Elite.
[8:22] Speaker 4: They're out of Kansas City. Now.
[8:24] Speaker 3: They have kids from Oklahoma, they have kids from all
[8:25] Speaker 3: over and they play on the eybl circuit. That's the
[8:28] Speaker 3: Nike circuit. So whether I don't know if I think
[8:31] Speaker 3: they invited him to try out for it and he didn't.
[8:34] Speaker 3: Why because he was actually loyal to Vick Williams, who
[8:37] Speaker 3: he played for since like seventh grade. So all these
[8:41] Speaker 3: things one high school, I mean college head coaches, a
[8:45] Speaker 3: lot of them don't go out, and if they do,
[8:47] Speaker 3: they just go to Peach Jam and watch the Kreme
[8:50] Speaker 3: de la Creme. And then you know, their assistants were
[8:53] Speaker 3: so busy in the portal and recruiting overseas, and Illinois
[8:56] Speaker 3: done a very good job overseas that a lot of
[8:58] Speaker 3: these kids get missed. And then you're You're like, well,
[9:02] Speaker 3: I'd love to have an eighteen nineteen year old, but
[9:05] Speaker 3: if I bring him in he's not gonna play. Then
[9:07] Speaker 3: he's gonna transfer. I'm gonna pay him, and I'm gonna
[9:10] Speaker 3: develop him for somebody else. And so you got a
[9:13] Speaker 3: credit VIC, but you also got a credit Illinois. They
[9:16] Speaker 3: saw him, they recruited, and they took him, and then
[9:19] Speaker 3: when he showed up, they're like, holy cow, we we
[9:21] Speaker 3: didn't even know. There's no chance they knew.
[9:23] Speaker 4: He was this good.
[9:24] Speaker 3: Ever, so they they, yeah, you can do it. And
[9:29] Speaker 3: I Illinois has a lot of money. They don't have
[9:32] Speaker 3: Duke money, they don't have Kansas money. But you can
[9:35] Speaker 3: do it if you're creative and look at their starting
[9:38] Speaker 3: lineup two overseas players who they're well compensated, but not
[9:43] Speaker 3: to the two three four million dollars of some of
[9:46] Speaker 3: these guys, and one freshman right who he didn't cost
[9:51] Speaker 3: them hardly anything, nothing, zero, you know. And when I
[9:55] Speaker 3: say nothing for a high major team, colin, guys that
[9:59] Speaker 3: make two fifty to three hundred thousand dollars a year
[10:02] Speaker 3: don't play. If you make that much money, you can
[10:06] Speaker 3: expect to not play.
[10:07] Speaker 4: I swear to god.
[10:08] Speaker 3: That's that's the that's the scale right now. Okay, so
[10:12] Speaker 3: I'm guessing he's I haven't asked. He's probably on that
[10:14] Speaker 3: two fifty three hundred sort of range whatever, and they
[10:17] Speaker 3: might have bumped him up in the regular season once
[10:18] Speaker 3: he starts humming and playing really really well.
[10:22] Speaker 4: But uh, it's it's difficult. You have to be thorough.
[10:26] Speaker 3: You're gonna miss some guys, but you have to use
[10:29] Speaker 3: all the resources at your disposal and then go eyeball
[10:32] Speaker 3: and see guys. Because what happens with the portal is, yes,
[10:37] Speaker 3: guys have been you have a GM and or you know,
[10:40] Speaker 3: your job as a coach is to research who might
[10:42] Speaker 3: be in the portal.
[10:43] Speaker 4: But it's like speed dating. So if you don't know
[10:46] Speaker 4: who you're recruiting.
[10:47] Speaker 3: If you don't know what you're getting, you're you're taking
[10:50] Speaker 3: somebody else's word for it. So you have to recruit
[10:53] Speaker 3: based upon who they've played for. You have to go
[10:56] Speaker 3: see him with your eyes if you can.
[10:59] Speaker 4: And then you.
[11:00] Speaker 3: Really really got to try and know the kid, know
[11:03] Speaker 3: the person, so you might know what you're getting. Even
[11:05] Speaker 3: then you're gonna miss because recruiting is not an exact science.
[11:09] Speaker 2: The Big Ten schools, those kids, there's not a lot
[11:13] Speaker 2: of jobs in the Midwest outside of Chicago. They flee
[11:15] Speaker 2: to the coasts and they make really good money and
[11:17] Speaker 2: they still love their they love their Big Ten teams
[11:20] Speaker 2: and they'll write checks. And the Big Ten, how I
[11:23] Speaker 2: have three straight national championships in football. This year they
[11:26] Speaker 2: return seven first or second round quarterbacks and they dominated
[11:30] Speaker 2: this tournament. I mean, if I had to guess today,
[11:33] Speaker 2: I would have Michigan against Illinois and the Natty. Although
[11:36] Speaker 2: you know, I mean Arizona's guards are great, Tommy's great,
[11:38] Speaker 2: and you know, Dan Hurley wins in the march, but
[11:42] Speaker 2: it is the Big Tens resurgence and dominance. Is it
[11:45] Speaker 2: just checks, Doug? Is it from my Purview, it's really
[11:49] Speaker 2: good coach.
[11:50] Speaker 3: And checks yes, yes, And I would say there's great
[11:55] Speaker 3: coaches in the Big Twelve. I would say that the
[11:57] Speaker 3: Big Twelve has been an unbelievable conference. Yeah, Kansas a
[12:00] Speaker 3: little down this year, Houston not as good as they
[12:04] Speaker 3: had been this year.
[12:06] Speaker 4: But here's that.
[12:07] Speaker 3: Let's cut the brass tacks you and I know this.
[12:09] Speaker 3: The SEC cheated the brains out for years right in football.
[12:13] Speaker 3: So it's it's a curious thing when everybody can spend.
[12:16] Speaker 4: Money on their roster, right right.
[12:19] Speaker 3: So now now let's see how good you are, right
[12:21] Speaker 3: when everybody's got dudes because they used to. They just
[12:25] Speaker 3: used you go and look, there's still a different caliber
[12:28] Speaker 3: of athlete at times in the SEC than some of
[12:29] Speaker 3: these teams. But I used to when I worked at CBS,
[12:32] Speaker 3: i started covering more SEC and I got to go
[12:35] Speaker 3: to SEC football games as well, just as kind of
[12:38] Speaker 3: a fan and be on the sidelines. And back then,
[12:40] Speaker 3: like there was just a different you look at even
[12:43] Speaker 3: now you look at the Big Twelve, they just look different.
[12:46] Speaker 3: The basketball expression is that guy sneakers squaked different. Right,
[12:51] Speaker 3: And I'm not again, I'm not saying that that the
[12:54] Speaker 3: Big Ten was high and mighty. They had plenty of scandals, right,
[12:57] Speaker 3: Minnesota had one miss you know obviously had a big one.
[13:01] Speaker 3: Ohio State had one. Whatever, Illinois you know, got caught whatever.
[13:06] Speaker 3: But the point is that generally, yes, the SEC was
[13:09] Speaker 3: seen as a cheaters league.
[13:11] Speaker 4: It just was.
[13:13] Speaker 2: To the car dealers and absolutely yes.
[13:17] Speaker 4: Brown paper bags, ye, all of it. Okay.
[13:22] Speaker 3: Now when it's it's it's not equal. And the reason
[13:25] Speaker 3: that you have the sixty OZHO favorites is the rest
[13:29] Speaker 3: of us, the little guys, we got no shot.
[13:31] Speaker 4: We just do.
[13:32] Speaker 3: You can win a game, you can't win two or three.
[13:35] Speaker 3: You just can't. You know, I'll never forget Calin. We
[13:38] Speaker 3: were playing Ohio State last year and I had Anthony
[13:41] Speaker 3: Roy who was leading the country and scoring. He has
[13:43] Speaker 3: thirty and it was eight and all of a sudden
[13:46] Speaker 3: we changed ball screen coverage and it's eighteen. I emptied
[13:49] Speaker 3: my bench and it's thirty and I was just I'm
[13:51] Speaker 3: sitting in there and I'm apoplectic, and I have this,
[13:55] Speaker 3: and I have I have a bit assistant named Eric
[13:58] Speaker 3: Sanders and his nickname eighth grade, and eighth grade puts
[14:01] Speaker 3: his arm around me and I go, dag it I
[14:04] Speaker 3: shouldn't have changed that ball screen coverage.
[14:06] Speaker 4: I screwed up. I messed this up.
[14:08] Speaker 3: And he's like, coach, they got three and a half
[14:11] Speaker 3: million dollars, we got ninety five thousand dollars.
[14:15] Speaker 4: Right, don't beat yourself up. We never had a chance,
[14:18] Speaker 4: you know. So.
[14:19] Speaker 3: So the point is that now there there's the haves
[14:24] Speaker 3: and the have nots. Right, But you give Michigan legal
[14:29] Speaker 3: money cheating, right, you give them elite coaching, right, and yeah,
[14:34] Speaker 3: they're better than all those SEC teams that have always had. Now, look,
[14:38] Speaker 3: the SEC has had some elite coaching as well, obviously,
[14:41] Speaker 3: and they've been really, really good. But I really think
[14:44] Speaker 3: that's what happened in football, that's what happened in basketball, right.
[14:48] Speaker 3: I mean, Kurt Scnetti's a hell of a coach, but
[14:51] Speaker 3: he's made much better when he's got thirty million dollars
[14:53] Speaker 3: to spend.
[14:55] Speaker 2: So I wrote down my NBA mock lottery draft, and
[14:59] Speaker 2: I do think aj Devon said, by you probably today
[15:03] Speaker 2: would go number one. I think one of the things
[15:06] Speaker 2: I said, like, like Cam Boozer is not a super athlete,
[15:08] Speaker 2: but he's gonna go top five. I think Caleb Wilson's
[15:11] Speaker 2: ceiling is insane. He's not polished yet, but god he had.
[15:15] Speaker 2: You can just see There'll be two or three plays
[15:17] Speaker 2: a game and you're like, holy, you know, is he
[15:20] Speaker 2: bam out of by you with a higher ceiling, Like
[15:23] Speaker 2: like what is he? So the Darren Peterson things fascinating
[15:26] Speaker 2: because and you played against him this year, your Green
[15:30] Speaker 2: Bay team played against You're the one that called me
[15:32] Speaker 2: and said you go, you go watch this guy. And
[15:35] Speaker 2: it's very early in the season. It was like, I
[15:37] Speaker 2: watched five possessions. I'm like, well, that's what Kobe probably
[15:39] Speaker 2: looked eighteen years old. He looked like Kobe. I mean,
[15:41] Speaker 2: it's kind of an easy comp Now, he wasn't he
[15:44] Speaker 2: got beat up the calf, the hammyes.
[15:46] Speaker 4: He wasn't.
[15:47] Speaker 2: He wasn't as athletic, he wasn't a durable The two
[15:51] Speaker 2: things that worried me one's obvious, I'll get to in
[15:53] Speaker 2: a second. The first thing that worries me is he
[15:55] Speaker 2: plays in a silo, a little like Kawhi first five
[15:58] Speaker 2: years in the league. No assist has the ball a
[16:01] Speaker 2: ton no assists. He's playing in asilo. He's playing for himself.
[16:03] Speaker 2: Don't love guys like that. As great as Kawhi is.
[16:07] Speaker 2: He is a little bit like Kawhi, not stylistically, but
[16:10] Speaker 2: plays in asilo durability issues. If you're hurt in college,
[16:14] Speaker 2: the rules always been the bigger, stronger dudes than the pros.
[16:17] Speaker 2: It's hard, But I think what really worries me is
[16:20] Speaker 2: when he comes out and says, you know, this thing
[16:23] Speaker 2: got into my head and I start thinking about you know,
[16:27] Speaker 2: and this is not analogous, but oh Ben Simmons, Markel Foltz,
[16:31] Speaker 2: Royce White, and I listen. I feel I have sympathy
[16:33] Speaker 2: for anybody that can struggle with mental health or whatever
[16:37] Speaker 2: it is. But if I'm an NBA in a loaded
[16:41] Speaker 2: draft where I watched Kayleb Williams and I'm like, he's
[16:43] Speaker 2: only fifty percent of the player he's going to be
[16:45] Speaker 2: in three years. I see, you know, aj Demonta, I
[16:49] Speaker 2: see Waggler the Guard of Illinois, and I'm like, is
[16:51] Speaker 2: he the next SGA? Jesus, he's sixty six again, he's
[16:55] Speaker 2: not even halfway home. What do you do with Daron Peterson?
[16:58] Speaker 2: If you're a GM, could you could you draft him
[17:01] Speaker 2: number one?
[17:03] Speaker 4: Well here's the you know, when I used to work
[17:07] Speaker 4: at CBS and ESPN.
[17:08] Speaker 3: They talk about the eye test, right, and the problem
[17:11] Speaker 3: with the eye test is it kind of depends upon
[17:13] Speaker 3: the day when you see a guy. So again, you
[17:16] Speaker 3: have to remember that we watched all the preseason stuff.
[17:18] Speaker 3: We watched and we were like in love with Daron
[17:21] Speaker 3: Peterson and then I mean we had no chance to start.
[17:24] Speaker 4: He was so good. So you know what do I?
[17:27] Speaker 4: And I was one.
[17:28] Speaker 3: I said, like, he's like Kobe in that he can
[17:31] Speaker 3: literally say, like you remember Larry Bird, those old Larry
[17:34] Speaker 3: Bird Living Legend videos, I'm gonna get the ball right
[17:36] Speaker 3: here and I'm gonna drive right there, I'm.
[17:37] Speaker 4: Gonnahoot it, I'm gonna make it. And then he did it.
[17:39] Speaker 3: Yeah, it feels like he gets to his spots and
[17:43] Speaker 3: he plays. He's never sped up. He plays at his
[17:45] Speaker 3: own pace.
[17:46] Speaker 4: He's great.
[17:47] Speaker 3: First thing everybody should know is okay that if the
[17:50] Speaker 3: Utah Jazz have the number one pick, they're taking a
[17:53] Speaker 3: j Devantza.
[17:54] Speaker 4: How do I know?
[17:55] Speaker 3: He went to Utah Prep, which is funded by Ryan Smith.
[17:58] Speaker 3: He went to BYU, which is funded by Ryan Smith.
[18:00] Speaker 3: Ryan Smith owns the Utah Jazz. If you want to
[18:03] Speaker 3: call something tampered, there's never been a person that has
[18:06] Speaker 3: ever been tampered with more than Aj Debonsa to end
[18:08] Speaker 3: up with the Utah Jazz ever ever ever in the
[18:11] Speaker 3: history of anything. Everybody knows it, everybody. So that's the
[18:15] Speaker 3: first thing. It doesn't matter who else Jesus Christ could
[18:19] Speaker 3: be getting ready to walk on water and turn water
[18:22] Speaker 3: into wine. They're drafting AJ Debansa outside of that boy,
[18:26] Speaker 3: it's hard because the Arkansas point guard, he's.
[18:29] Speaker 4: Truck tremendous, tremendous dud.
[18:33] Speaker 2: He's Oh, he's fantastic. And by the way, he's athletic
[18:40] Speaker 2: and can also catch and shoot. A lot of athletic
[18:42] Speaker 2: guards are rhythm scores. He can catch his shoot you
[18:46] Speaker 2: and he's also a great passer, which a lot of
[18:49] Speaker 2: great scores aren't.
[18:51] Speaker 3: Yeah, well he listen, you can. He'll run your offense
[18:54] Speaker 3: tomorrow and he'll be he'll be great at it. Would
[18:58] Speaker 3: I draft him, I'd really have to know what's going
[19:00] Speaker 3: on with the shutting it down at halftime thing. Again,
[19:04] Speaker 3: all my information is second and third hand, so I
[19:06] Speaker 3: don't want especially with medicals, I don't want to. I
[19:09] Speaker 3: can tell you that, you know, we had my point
[19:12] Speaker 3: guard head cramping issues and it does mess with you mentally,
[19:16] Speaker 3: because you might feel one coming on and you're like, okay,
[19:19] Speaker 3: take me out.
[19:19] Speaker 4: I feel one coming on here, and we try pickle juice.
[19:23] Speaker 3: The Packers gave us this medicine they give to NFL
[19:25] Speaker 3: players that didn't work. There is a mental component to
[19:30] Speaker 3: it where your brain triggers the cramping. Again, this is
[19:33] Speaker 3: from from actual experience with one of my with my my,
[19:37] Speaker 3: my leader, my team captain. So I would just have
[19:40] Speaker 3: to know more about the about the medicals. I do agree,
[19:43] Speaker 3: he's not really a creative passer. He is a score.
[19:47] Speaker 3: He is a throwback classic. He's somewhere between Kobe and
[19:52] Speaker 3: DeMar Derozen. But here's the part I do like, unbelievable competitor,
[19:57] Speaker 3: not scared of the big moment, and has a has
[20:01] Speaker 3: a body run you know. He's got just a body
[20:03] Speaker 3: like a Greek god. So he'll assimilate to the NBA
[20:06] Speaker 3: game quite well. Yeah, I would like to pass a
[20:10] Speaker 3: little bit more. But the biggest thing with him is
[20:12] Speaker 3: the medicals. Is he gonna play every night?
[20:14] Speaker 4: Yeah?
[20:14] Speaker 3: And you're right, like, I'll give you the example and
[20:16] Speaker 3: be hurt in college her all the time in the
[20:18] Speaker 3: pros Kyrie hurt in college her all the time. Zion
[20:21] Speaker 3: hurt in college, her all the time in the pros.
[20:23] Speaker 3: So yeah, you have to trust your medical people and
[20:29] Speaker 3: you have to figure out what you need. But the
[20:32] Speaker 3: answer is yes, I would if I was all that
[20:35] Speaker 3: stuff was cleared. He's just again, his sneakers squeak different.
[20:40] Speaker 3: He moves at a different gait, a different pace, a
[20:43] Speaker 3: different rhythm. And I do think that as the NBA
[20:46] Speaker 3: game opens up, he's got even better spacing. And then
[20:49] Speaker 3: you play with great spacing at at at Kansas, but
[20:53] Speaker 3: even better obviously, Like it's just hard to see. How
[20:56] Speaker 3: are you gonna stop him? I know he's going against
[20:58] Speaker 3: college kids, but he's a real college kid. Yeah, I'm
[21:01] Speaker 3: personally a big fan. I think de Bonsa goes one,
[21:04] Speaker 3: he'll he'll probably go two. But it's all gonna be
[21:07] Speaker 3: about the medicals.
[21:08] Speaker 4: And then the.
[21:09] Speaker 3: Question is, and this is this goes to your Kuhi thing?
[21:12] Speaker 3: Was the dad telling him to shut it down at
[21:14] Speaker 3: halftime or was it him his body? Right? Is the
[21:18] Speaker 3: dad to involve, whereas with Kawhi it's the uncle that's
[21:21] Speaker 3: apparently too involved.

[22:28] Speaker 2: conditions apply. Concerned about gambling in Florida, call one eighty
[22:31] Speaker 2: eight eight Admit it. In Indiana. If you are somebody
[22:34] Speaker 2: you know as a problem wants help, call one eight
[22:36] Speaker 2: hundred and nine with it. Gambling problem called one eight
[22:38] Speaker 2: hundred gambler Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia.
[22:47] Speaker 5: There is seemingly some sentiment of like the PGA Tour
[22:51] Speaker 5: should like cut ties with Tiger Woods. I will be
[22:55] Speaker 5: Florida if that happens, right. I have plenty of Tiger
[22:58] Speaker 5: thoughts that we can get to, but like he is
[23:00] Speaker 5: so valuable to them on so many levels. Forget captaining
[23:07] Speaker 5: the Ryder Cup or if he plays on the Senior Tour,
[23:09] Speaker 5: like they are trying to modernize the tournament. Over a
[23:13] Speaker 5: million people watch the Golf League for it's guys playing
[23:18] Speaker 5: golf on a simulator, but they over a million people
[23:21] Speaker 5: watch it when Tiger Woods plays like he is like
[23:23] Speaker 5: a singular force of nature that I do not believe
[23:27] Speaker 5: that Augusta or the PGA Tour or his sponsors are
[23:34] Speaker 5: all of a sudden going to turn their back on
[23:36] Speaker 5: Tiger Woods because of this latest incident. He's too he's
[23:40] Speaker 5: too valuable to the entity. Now, that might also be
[23:43] Speaker 5: part of the problem that enables him to not change
[23:46] Speaker 5: his behavior, But these companies are not going to take
[23:49] Speaker 5: up a moral stand against their bottom line with Tiger Woods.
[23:54] Speaker 2: Well, on my take on him was people osa. When
[23:58] Speaker 2: you know rich men enrich successful men often athletes get
[24:02] Speaker 2: into car wrecks or DUIs how stupid? How do you
[24:07] Speaker 2: not have a driver? Number one? I get in my
[24:09] Speaker 2: car five times a day. You know, it's not like
[24:12] Speaker 2: Tiger's got a nine to five job, drop me off
[24:14] Speaker 2: at work and pick me up. So Tiger doesn't want
[24:17] Speaker 2: to pay a million dollars a half a million dollars
[24:18] Speaker 2: a year for a guy to park outside his Jupiter
[24:20] Speaker 2: floor to home and take him to Vaughn's or Safeway.
[24:25] Speaker 4: Okay.
[24:25] Speaker 2: Secondly, a lot of successful men and athletes are adrenaline junkies.
[24:30] Speaker 2: They got six cars, maybe twelve, they like to drive
[24:33] Speaker 2: them and they think they're bulletproof. So if they got
[24:36] Speaker 2: a cocktail or four, if they smoke a blunt or two,
[24:40] Speaker 2: they like to get into the car and they hey, man,
[24:42] Speaker 2: I'm bulletproof. So when I look at that, do I
[24:45] Speaker 2: feel bad for Tiger? Absolutely? I think his job now
[24:48] Speaker 2: is to be a better dad.
[24:50] Speaker 4: Right.
[24:50] Speaker 2: The golf thing is secondary. But when I hear people
[24:54] Speaker 2: just jump to the how can he not have a driver?
[24:58] Speaker 2: Guys athletes, you know, it's it's it's an outlier to
[25:05] Speaker 2: find a wealthy athlete with fewer than a half dozen cars.
[25:11] Speaker 2: Guys in cars, I mean, it's it's an alpha quality.
[25:15] Speaker 2: It is a testosterone quality. Fast cars, fast driving, and
[25:21] Speaker 2: so you know, I just I'm not defending the actions
[25:25] Speaker 2: of Tiger, but he's clearly got a major problem. There
[25:30] Speaker 2: was a story about opioids found in his body. It's awful.
[25:34] Speaker 5: Well that's what it is. Yeah, yeah, So listen, the
[25:38] Speaker 5: half a million or a million dollars a year Tiger
[25:41] Speaker 5: could afford it chooses not to because of what you
[25:45] Speaker 5: were talking about. Most likely he likes he likes either
[25:49] Speaker 5: driving his cool cars. I mean that car that he
[25:50] Speaker 5: flipped was two hundred and fifty thousand dollars car and
[25:54] Speaker 5: he probably has a lot of them. And also this
[25:59] Speaker 5: is pure speculation, but we have reason to believe it.
[26:04] Speaker 5: I mean, Tiger Woods has done some shady things with relationships,
[26:08] Speaker 5: and he might not want a witness to where he's
[26:11] Speaker 5: going at all times to see who he might want
[26:15] Speaker 5: to see. But the thing that is just so obviously
[26:18] Speaker 5: you talk about having a few drinks or smoking, the
[26:20] Speaker 5: smoking a blunt, you know, he blew a zero point zero.
[26:23] Speaker 5: He had no booze in his system, but they found
[26:25] Speaker 5: too hyper coodone in his pocket. Like he's had a
[26:29] Speaker 5: ton of surgeries. He clearly is Listen, I can't diagnose addiction, right,
[26:41] Speaker 5: it is fair to speculate that he is addicted to
[26:43] Speaker 5: pain pills or at the very least dependent on them,
[26:46] Speaker 5: and is clearly and has just from the last EUI
[26:50] Speaker 5: and the toxicology report that came out, there was a
[26:52] Speaker 5: bunch of it in his system. He represents a lot
[26:55] Speaker 5: of the symptoms of it. Glassy eyed, puffy face, lethargic
[27:02] Speaker 5: a lot. You know, pill opioids are scary because they work,
[27:07] Speaker 5: like you know what I mean, like it's big business.
[27:10] Speaker 5: Someone very close to me has a serious problem with it.
[27:13] Speaker 5: We've tried many different things to get them help. It's
[27:15] Speaker 5: a scary thing. But if you deal with chronic pain
[27:19] Speaker 5: and that little white pill is the only thing that
[27:22] Speaker 5: gives you relief, it's hard to say no to it
[27:24] Speaker 5: because dealing with chronic pain is awful. But the thing
[27:28] Speaker 5: that you can't do, you have to have better judgment
[27:32] Speaker 5: than to get behind the wheel of a car. If
[27:34] Speaker 5: you're taking opioids every day, you just it's it's dangerous.
[27:39] Speaker 5: You are a danger to yourself and society. And if
[27:43] Speaker 5: he had pills in his system, which we again assume
[27:47] Speaker 5: that he did based on his previous history and based
[27:50] Speaker 5: on the reports of the officers at the scene and
[27:54] Speaker 5: the physical evidence of he had more in his pocket,
[27:58] Speaker 5: it's just dangerous, man. It's just it's just straight up
[28:01] Speaker 5: dangerous to like, even if he's not behind the wheel
[28:03] Speaker 5: of a car, taking that being that dependent on that
[28:07] Speaker 5: quantity of opioids is just a very dangerous thing. And
[28:10] Speaker 5: when he's had a couple dozen surgeries at this point,
[28:14] Speaker 5: it's no surprise that that's the situation that he's got
[28:16] Speaker 5: himself into. So you're right about men in cars and adrenaline.
[28:23] Speaker 5: Junkie and all that, but if he's taken a high
[28:26] Speaker 5: dose of pain medicine every day for chronic pain, he's
[28:30] Speaker 5: probably never in condition to drive, if we're being totally honest,
[28:35] Speaker 5: Like he really gets it's a hard thing to manage.
[28:38] Speaker 5: So I I do feel badly for him, But he's
[28:41] Speaker 5: got he's got to stop driving somehow because or he's
[28:45] Speaker 5: got to get the pain situation under control, because it's dangerous.
[28:49] Speaker 4: Man.
[28:49] Speaker 5: It's those things are They are scary with how much
[28:52] Speaker 5: they work. I don't know if you've ever had a
[28:53] Speaker 5: big surgery, but like I've had final fusion surgery, and
[28:57] Speaker 5: which is what Tiger has had.
[28:59] Speaker 4: Yeah.
[29:00] Speaker 5: Yeah, and it's like you could be in the most
[29:02] Speaker 5: pain ever and then you take one of those pills
[29:06] Speaker 5: and you feel like you're floating. This is the greatest
[29:08] Speaker 5: thing in the world. So, yes, he's got a serious,
[29:12] Speaker 5: serious problem in his hands.
[29:14] Speaker 2: Pivot to this. I am on an island, but I
[29:18] Speaker 2: think most officials are great. The NFL, according to NFL ops,
[29:25] Speaker 2: over ninety nine percent of calls are right now. Now
[29:31] Speaker 2: that's NFL ops, but I think that's a fairly reasonable number.
[29:35] Speaker 2: We are watching the ABS system and what we're finding
[29:39] Speaker 2: is homeplate umpiring is difficult, but again, half the time
[29:44] Speaker 2: the umpires are right and there's just not that many challenges,
[29:47] Speaker 2: which is pretty amazing considering batters are different sizes, the
[29:51] Speaker 2: zone is different, the ball's going ninety eight with movement,
[29:56] Speaker 2: and even when you pat your head it's a sillimeter,
[29:59] Speaker 2: it's just outside. So officials are good. So there's this
[30:03] Speaker 2: sense that you can't go with replacement refs, and in
[30:09] Speaker 2: most instances, I think there's very few great of anything,
[30:12] Speaker 2: and I'm sure you can find replacement refs. But if
[30:15] Speaker 2: I'm the NFL, here's my take. All you people do
[30:20] Speaker 2: is complain about baseball umpires and NBA refs, and they're
[30:25] Speaker 2: full time, and our guys get ninety nine percent hit rate.
[30:31] Speaker 2: Our league is growing faster than any other league, so
[30:34] Speaker 2: it's clearly tolerable for television and radio and screaming consumption. Well,
[30:43] Speaker 2: it's working. Well, why do we have to go full
[30:45] Speaker 2: time the other sports? I mean, you can't win an
[30:49] Speaker 2: NBA series without seventy five percent of the fans claiming
[30:52] Speaker 2: it's rigged. It's just an automatic, it's rigged. So my
[30:57] Speaker 2: take is the NFL is like folks, we got part
[30:59] Speaker 2: time guys ninety nine percent. Right, Our games don't take
[31:04] Speaker 2: thirty minutes for the last two and a half like
[31:06] Speaker 2: the NBA. We don't need an ABS system necessarily at
[31:09] Speaker 2: the you know, for our calls and it's working. So
[31:13] Speaker 2: so what's the point of us going full time?
[31:18] Speaker 4: Yeah, the listen.
[31:19] Speaker 5: The argument for going full time is they have the money.
[31:23] Speaker 5: That's probably the only argument. I don't know if ninety
[31:26] Speaker 5: nine figure is correct. I think that officiating has been damaged,
[31:32] Speaker 5: like the public perception of officiating has been damaged by
[31:35] Speaker 5: HD television, Like we have this ability to microscopics slow down,
[31:43] Speaker 5: NBC it zoom, and they can show us three replays
[31:48] Speaker 5: immediately before the next snap is done, and it's just
[31:52] Speaker 5: totally and we're debating it for forty five seconds, for
[31:56] Speaker 5: a minute, for a minute and a half on these replays,
[31:58] Speaker 5: and then the rule analysts will come on TV and
[32:01] Speaker 5: be like that should be overturned, and then the ref
[32:04] Speaker 5: on the field is like call stands, and we're like,
[32:06] Speaker 5: what the hell's going on?
[32:07] Speaker 4: You know.
[32:07] Speaker 5: So, like I think that's why public opinion on refs
[32:13] Speaker 5: is so much, is so out of skewed, with out
[32:17] Speaker 5: of skew with the reality I'll be like, of course,
[32:19] Speaker 5: they're very, very good, and umpiring is virtually impossible. I
[32:24] Speaker 5: had a hard time doing it for like college age
[32:28] Speaker 5: Beer League baseball, when guys are hungover puking in right field.
[32:32] Speaker 5: I was an umpire for a couple of summers, and
[32:34] Speaker 5: I'm like, this is ridiculous, Like I am straight up
[32:38] Speaker 5: guessing as to what is a ball at a strike.
[32:41] Speaker 5: So I can't imagine doing it at that level. But
[32:43] Speaker 5: I just think that the the NFL is in such
[32:48] Speaker 5: a position where they're teflon whether they do it or don't,
[32:53] Speaker 5: replacement refs or not. And they know they're fine, they
[32:56] Speaker 5: know exactly exactly and they and they know it, and
[33:00] Speaker 5: so I think that I think you are probably right
[33:03] Speaker 5: with the direction this goes. They win. They tend to
