[1:07] Speaker 3: all right? John Middlecoff former NFL scout has his own podcast,
[1:13] Speaker 3: Three and Out. Can't tell you how many people come
[1:15] Speaker 3: up to me in Chicago GMS. They're like, oh, I
[1:19] Speaker 3: love I love middle Cough so much. They never say
[1:21] Speaker 3: that about me. They love you.
[1:25] Speaker 4: To tell him. I don't know if middle Coff's going
[1:27] Speaker 4: to the Hall of Fame, like like you so congratulations,
[1:30] Speaker 4: by the way, that's that's pretty cool.
[1:33] Speaker 3: I appreciate it. Buffalo twenty eight Kansas City twenty one.
[1:37] Speaker 3: I looked at this number today. To me, this was
[1:40] Speaker 3: this was really the game is that Mahomes was uncomfortable
[1:45] Speaker 3: and Josh Allen was really comfortable. He was sacked three times,
[1:48] Speaker 3: hit fifteen times. And when Mahomes John doesn't trust his
[1:54] Speaker 3: offensive line, it changes, it changes the way he plays,
[1:57] Speaker 3: He presses, takes more risks. And I thought the game
[2:02] Speaker 3: really came down to that is that. I just thought
[2:04] Speaker 3: Josh was really comfortable and Patrick wasn't.
[2:08] Speaker 4: I just know this, if the Bills can find a
[2:11] Speaker 4: way to play like they do against the Kansas City
[2:13] Speaker 4: Chiefs in the regular season in the postseason, they will
[2:16] Speaker 4: win the Super Bowl because they thoroughly outplayed him today,
[2:19] Speaker 4: outgained to by one hundred yards. We're up double digits
[2:22] Speaker 4: in the fourth quarter. I mean it took a fourth
[2:25] Speaker 4: and seventeen, which well, only Andy Reid would have a
[2:28] Speaker 4: fourth and seventeen play that would come wide open. But listen,
[2:31] Speaker 4: that Bills team that we just saw. That team can
[2:34] Speaker 4: win the Super Bowl. Yeah, but we see them on
[2:36] Speaker 4: a weekly basis now look as good on defense, the
[2:38] Speaker 4: pass rush isn't always there. Joey Bosa looked like, I
[2:42] Speaker 4: don't know his third year with the Chargers today, so
[2:46] Speaker 4: I don't know where that version of the Bills is
[2:47] Speaker 4: always because they make a ton of plays when they
[2:50] Speaker 4: have to against the Ravens and in the regular season.
[2:53] Speaker 4: I mean, Colin, this is now kind of a theme
[2:55] Speaker 4: obviously at home and this is why I've been I've
[2:58] Speaker 4: said from the jump, getting a home field for the
[3:00] Speaker 4: Bills is really big, and today was a bigger game
[3:03] Speaker 4: for them because at the end of the day, like
[3:05] Speaker 4: Chiefs have already won Super Bowl, so I think they
[3:07] Speaker 4: will eventually win another one. But if they get bounced
[3:09] Speaker 4: in the first or second round one year, whatever. This
[3:12] Speaker 4: year for the Bills, you just have to hold serve.
[3:14] Speaker 4: With the Patriots, they have an easier schedule than you
[3:16] Speaker 4: they keep taking care of business. If they would have
[3:18] Speaker 4: lost today, they would have been out of one game
[3:20] Speaker 4: Deficis and they've already lost to them, So there was
[3:23] Speaker 4: a lot of pressure. And in fairness, I thought they
[3:25] Speaker 4: answered the bell. Beside a couple of plays in the
[3:27] Speaker 4: second half, right, they were really good going.
[3:29] Speaker 3: Well, I mean, And the other thing that's I mean,
[3:31] Speaker 3: Bosa is healthy. He's thirty, Greg Russo is twenty five.
[3:38] Speaker 3: Aj Epeniza is twenty seven. These guys are in their
[3:41] Speaker 3: athletic prime and they've drafted pretty well in the back end.
[3:44] Speaker 3: So Denver is now on a heater. Denver's nine and
[3:48] Speaker 3: two and now plays Kansas City next, and Kansas City
[3:53] Speaker 3: is five and four, and so now Joe all got
[3:56] Speaker 3: banged up today, but the Chargers are six and three.
[4:00] Speaker 3: So you get into a really weird situation here where
[4:03] Speaker 3: if Denver beats, I mean, it was the worst thing
[4:06] Speaker 3: possible for Denver. I don't know what the line is,
[4:08] Speaker 3: I'm taking Kansas City against Denver when Kansas City loses.
[4:14] Speaker 3: But I think the thing that jumped out to me
[4:15] Speaker 3: today was, you know, we've talked a lot about the
[4:19] Speaker 3: defense at Oliver didn't play, but we talk a lot
[4:23] Speaker 3: about Buffalo's defense all year. So much of defense is
[4:27] Speaker 3: effort right. Like I was talking to somebody the other
[4:32] Speaker 3: day about this, is that you know, offensive players on
[4:36] Speaker 3: a high school they'll follow a coach. Offensive players want
[4:39] Speaker 3: the coach.
[4:40] Speaker 1: You know.
[4:40] Speaker 3: Defensive players, you know they high schoolers, they want to
[4:45] Speaker 3: go to big schools, right they most defensive coaches they
[4:48] Speaker 3: see is the same thing. Defensive players are about wrecking things.
[4:53] Speaker 3: And I do think when you take that Buffalo defensive
[4:57] Speaker 3: front and they play Mahomes, they play differently. It's just
[5:01] Speaker 3: a different It's different than playing Michael Pennix. And I've
[5:05] Speaker 3: always felt offense is about choreography. But I felt like
[5:08] Speaker 3: I felt like the defensive front today for Buffalo knew
[5:14] Speaker 3: the red light was on. That's what it felt like
[5:16] Speaker 3: to me. It felt like they played with way more energy.
[5:20] Speaker 3: Many of the same players played above what they've been
[5:23] Speaker 3: playing at all year. I just I feel like defensive
[5:25] Speaker 3: players can play at a different intensity level depending on
[5:29] Speaker 3: the opponent. Ten times they've played five and five, and
[5:33] Speaker 3: I don't know, I thought that was the difference. I
[5:35] Speaker 3: thought the defensive line for Buffalo was great.
[5:38] Speaker 4: Well, can I piggyback off what you just said about
[5:41] Speaker 4: the defense, I think, and I've said this now for
[5:43] Speaker 4: a while that when you look at the NFL and
[5:47] Speaker 4: they've tried to clean up the game, right, so now
[5:49] Speaker 4: when you watch, you know, guys are much safer. They
[5:52] Speaker 4: take a very conscious effort to officiate dirty calls. And
[5:56] Speaker 4: I think most guys, now, if you're twenty five, you
[5:59] Speaker 4: have gone through college in the NFL being taught how
[6:02] Speaker 4: to hit right and not use your helmet. But I
[6:05] Speaker 4: do think if we miked up defensive coordinators, like if
[6:08] Speaker 4: you got the defensive meeting room on Saturday night and
[6:11] Speaker 4: before the team came out this week and probably all week,
[6:14] Speaker 4: fans would be uncomfortable what's being said in there, especially
[6:17] Speaker 4: from the Buffalo side, And you could go around the league.
[6:20] Speaker 4: I bet if you got Brian Flores micd up this
[6:23] Speaker 4: week on Wednesday night, on Saturday night, it would make
[6:26] Speaker 4: a lot of people uncomfortable with what they want. I
[6:29] Speaker 4: enjoy that, and I know what I'm on, but I
[6:31] Speaker 4: still think that the way they talk and what they
[6:33] Speaker 4: preach is still has similarities going back to the eighties
[6:37] Speaker 4: and the nineties. Yeah, and you know, Buffalo's front is
[6:40] Speaker 4: really talented and they just lost at Oliver the first
[6:44] Speaker 4: round draft pick from Kentucky. I mean Patrick Mahomes. Listen,
[6:47] Speaker 4: I'm with you. His offensive line was at tatters. You
[6:49] Speaker 4: can't throw that interception late in the game because they
[6:51] Speaker 4: never got the ball back, you know, essentially, right, So
[6:55] Speaker 4: it's like that was killer and they just need some
[6:59] Speaker 4: more impact plays on defense. We'll talk about the Steelers, well,
[7:02] Speaker 4: what happened today. Their high priced guys, especially upfront, made
[7:05] Speaker 4: huge play huge. So when you're playing in playoff games,
[7:09] Speaker 4: I'm sure we'll talk about the baseball game too. Sometimes
[7:11] Speaker 4: you just need a random guy to make a big
[7:13] Speaker 4: ass play, whether that's a tip ball for a pick,
[7:15] Speaker 4: whether that's a fumble, and obviously your stars to make
[7:18] Speaker 4: big plays. So you know, Buffalo in coach Reid and
[7:21] Speaker 4: all the Bret Veetz, all those guys will tell you
[7:23] Speaker 4: Josh Allen is the best player they play, Yeah, and
[7:25] Speaker 4: has been for now five years. I mean he because
[7:28] Speaker 4: not only he matches his play against the other randoms
[7:31] Speaker 4: against them, and he's one of the rare ones, if
[7:33] Speaker 4: not the only guy who has consistently done that now
[7:35] Speaker 4: for four or five years.
[7:36] Speaker 3: Well, they were sixty percent on third down. They had
[7:39] Speaker 3: one hundred forty yards rushing. I thought, you know, and
[7:43] Speaker 3: I thought it was going to be high scoring, and
[7:46] Speaker 3: I said, I'll take Kansas City. But when these two
[7:50] Speaker 3: teams play, you know, you never count Kansas City out.
[7:53] Speaker 3: But I felt like today this was this was Buffalo's
[7:56] Speaker 3: day because Buffalo had lost at home to New England.
[7:58] Speaker 3: So again I watched that game. The intensity felt different today.
[8:03] Speaker 3: It feels different in the stadium when Kansas City plays there,
[8:06] Speaker 3: you get NaNs, get Romo. It just feels different. And
[8:10] Speaker 3: you know, Josh Allen, they said this during the game,
[8:15] Speaker 3: seventy nine rushing touchdowns in eight years.
[8:17] Speaker 2: Jesus, that's just insane.
[8:20] Speaker 3: He is one of the things when I watch, and
[8:24] Speaker 3: I feel this way to a lesser degree with Lamar Jackson,
[8:28] Speaker 3: but I do think there are certain things I guess
[8:31] Speaker 3: I would say this. I feel generally Kansas City has
[8:35] Speaker 3: slightly better personnel than Buffalo, But right now, does Buffalo
[8:41] Speaker 3: have the right ingredients star running back Mahomes doesn't better
[8:48] Speaker 3: defensive front with more high level guys. Right Chris Jones
[8:53] Speaker 3: has not had a great year. So we know Buffalo
[8:55] Speaker 3: and Kansas City have good gms and great quarterbacks and
[8:58] Speaker 3: We know Andy's very clever in these games, but a
[9:01] Speaker 3: lot of times John it's units. You know, the two
[9:04] Speaker 3: times Mahomes has been blown out in Super Bowls, he
[9:07] Speaker 3: had a bad old line. The old lines are both fine.
[9:10] Speaker 3: Although Kansas City's got overwhelmed today, but that defensive front
[9:13] Speaker 3: right now for Buffalo, it reminds me. It just there's
[9:17] Speaker 3: just a lot of guys. I feel like there's just
[9:20] Speaker 3: a lot of guys that play. I must throw Milano
[9:23] Speaker 3: in there when he's healthy. I mean, Josh is only
[9:28] Speaker 3: twenty nine. He's going to have six more cracks at
[9:29] Speaker 3: the super Bowl minimum. But I felt today watching him,
[9:33] Speaker 3: I'm like, that's they've got it. They've had it before.
[9:37] Speaker 3: But Cook playing at this level, Buffalo's got all the ingredients.
[9:41] Speaker 4: I would say this too. If Kincaid is going to
[9:43] Speaker 4: look like that, SHA's what they drafted him high, to
[9:45] Speaker 4: look like a Laporta, to look like a Tucker Craft, Yes,
[9:48] Speaker 4: a Kittle, a Kelsey. So if he's going to play
[9:51] Speaker 4: like that, I mean Cook, If you had to look
[9:53] Speaker 4: at twenty twenty five, you would say Jonathan Taylor's had
[9:56] Speaker 4: the best year at running back. McCaffrey is just week
[9:59] Speaker 4: in week out bringing, and you would put Cook. I mean,
[10:01] Speaker 4: he's been one of the best running backs in the
[10:03] Speaker 4: NFL this year and you watch him on a weekly
[10:05] Speaker 4: basis not really debatable. So you get high level tight
[10:08] Speaker 4: end play, you get high level running back play. I
[10:10] Speaker 4: would say since Cook has become a high end starter,
[10:14] Speaker 4: it's really changed the Bills offense and it's made Joe
[10:16] Speaker 4: Brady look a lot better. The other thing is if
[10:20] Speaker 4: you have a good defensive line. The Chiefs are missing
[10:22] Speaker 4: their star rookie left tackle who's been gone now for
[10:25] Speaker 4: several weeks. Today they had multiple injuries at right guard,
[10:28] Speaker 4: at right or at left guard, and at right tackle. Well,
[10:31] Speaker 4: if that means your backup left tackle is starting because
[10:34] Speaker 4: Simmons is gone, so you actually are going to like
[10:37] Speaker 4: a backups backup. The Domino effect was pretty big, and
[10:41] Speaker 4: you just saw him kind of under duress, and the
[10:44] Speaker 4: reality is sometimes when he's under duress, he will make
[10:47] Speaker 4: decisions like you know, other run of the mill quarterbacks
[10:50] Speaker 4: and not one of the great players we've ever seen.
[10:52] Speaker 4: And he did today all.
[10:54] Speaker 3: Right, Minnesota twenty seven, Detroit twenty four. Before we get
[10:57] Speaker 3: to JJ McCarthy, golf got sacked five times, hit eleven
[11:01] Speaker 3: ten tackles for loss. Brian Flores was on his game today.
[11:04] Speaker 3: They couldn't run the football at all, so it was
[11:07] Speaker 3: amor on. Saint Brown and Sam Laporta were excellent, but
[11:10] Speaker 3: Detroit could not run the ball. And that's kind of
[11:12] Speaker 3: the engine that makes everything slick and click there. JJ
[11:16] Speaker 3: McCarthy was after the first couple of drives, he was
[11:20] Speaker 3: about fifty percent again, but I got two touchdowns, ran
[11:23] Speaker 3: for another okay on third down. I thought he was
[11:27] Speaker 3: very good in the script and stuff early. Overall, he
[11:30] Speaker 3: moves well.
[11:32] Speaker 1: He looks.
[11:32] Speaker 3: It's funny about size. He looks a little small to me.
[11:35] Speaker 3: It's so funny. Mahomes is six one and a half.
[11:38] Speaker 3: He feels huge to me, I don't Aaron Rodgers is
[11:40] Speaker 3: six one and a half. He feels six to four. McCarthy,
[11:44] Speaker 3: it sometimes feels like he gets engulfed. But overall, I
[11:47] Speaker 3: thought he moved well and played pretty well. Did you
[11:49] Speaker 3: have a strong take on him?
[11:51] Speaker 4: I think your take on the waight, I think it's
[11:52] Speaker 4: a girth thing, you know, the side of the thickness,
[11:55] Speaker 4: because Russell Wilson never felt like he was small, right,
[11:58] Speaker 4: even though he's five ten yearl because he's two hundred
[12:00] Speaker 4: twenty pounds. Yeah, Caleb's a good example. Yeah, shorter, but
[12:03] Speaker 4: feels like he's two sixteen.
[12:04] Speaker 3: And Caleb's six feet to I'm taller than Caleb by
[12:06] Speaker 3: like an inch.
[12:07] Speaker 4: One thing we said about JJ last year during the injury,
[12:11] Speaker 4: and I think Albert Breer and a bunch of guys,
[12:12] Speaker 4: he lost a bunch of weight and was like one
[12:14] Speaker 4: hundred and eighty five pounds, So I think it's harder
[12:16] Speaker 4: for Mahomes probably wised to earn thirty pounds. So I
[12:19] Speaker 4: think that factors in the number one thing with JJ
[12:22] Speaker 4: today were the good plays were touchdowns. So if you're
[12:25] Speaker 4: gonna count for three touchdowns, you could have twenty in
[12:29] Speaker 4: completions and have some terrible plays. It's when you're not
[12:32] Speaker 4: scoring and bringing none to that to the table, it's
[12:35] Speaker 4: just a complete disaster. Flora, As I thought, if you're
[12:38] Speaker 4: gonna give one game ball to a coach, same it'd
[12:41] Speaker 4: probably have to go to him because you're on the
[12:44] Speaker 4: road in Detroit. That was that was excellent. I mean,
[12:49] Speaker 4: his guys were flying around. Gof's good against the blitz
[12:52] Speaker 4: and early on I think they had blitzed like five
[12:54] Speaker 4: or six times it sacked them. On two of them,
[12:56] Speaker 4: Gough was all out of sink where offense was out
[12:59] Speaker 4: of sink, and it felt like he gave the speech,
[13:04] Speaker 4: we're going to have to win this thing because in
[13:06] Speaker 4: fairness coming into that game and they kept hitting on it.
[13:09] Speaker 4: On the broadcast of I thought Tom did a good job.
[13:13] Speaker 4: He said, there's no one disputing his arm strength. But
[13:17] Speaker 4: you know, Burkhardt must have come in late from the
[13:19] Speaker 4: baseball game last night. Was there talking about a guy grinding,
[13:23] Speaker 4: And Brady's big thing was clearly he knows Kevin pretty well.
[13:28] Speaker 4: It's like, sometimes you need to do a change up.
[13:30] Speaker 4: Sometimes we need to get some off speed. Sometimes you
[13:32] Speaker 4: need touch balls. Yes, because you watch the arm strength
[13:36] Speaker 4: is fine, but on some of these balls over the
[13:38] Speaker 4: middle on third and eight, and even at his interception
[13:41] Speaker 4: was a little behind. His accuracy like some of these
[13:44] Speaker 4: guys is a work in progress.
[13:45] Speaker 3: Yeah, JJ's interception was low and down it and the
[13:49] Speaker 3: Lions player came over it. No, that's that's Matt Stafford
[13:53] Speaker 3: is the master of tempo. Like he can sling it
[13:55] Speaker 3: side arm, he can throw a heat and I think
[13:58] Speaker 3: of it. It's just it is a little bit like
[14:00] Speaker 3: being a baseball pitcher. I what I worry about what
[14:04] Speaker 3: JJ McCarthy is, And I felt like this was Brock Purtty.
[14:07] Speaker 3: You know, when the Niners, Christian McCaffrey is upright, I
[14:10] Speaker 3: don't even care who the quarterback is. I mean like,
[14:13] Speaker 3: if Christian McCaffrey plays today at half their yards, it
[14:16] Speaker 3: doesn't matter if it's Mac Jones or Brock pretty. I
[14:19] Speaker 3: do feel with Kevin O'Connell justin Jefferson good left tackle.
[14:24] Speaker 3: I kind of feel like it's hard to evaluate JJ
[14:28] Speaker 3: because the coach, the left tackle, and the receiver are
[14:31] Speaker 3: so good. It's like San Francisco with Kyle and Christian McCaffrey.
[14:34] Speaker 3: And then when Kittle is healthy and Jennings can be,
[14:38] Speaker 3: you know, highly productive, how valuable is the quarterback? So
[14:43] Speaker 3: this is an anti J McCarthy. I just think I
[14:47] Speaker 3: think again, I think I just need more of him.
[14:50] Speaker 3: I just have to see more games. I thought Brian
[14:52] Speaker 3: Flores was game ball Brian Flores.
[14:55] Speaker 4: That's why I think it's fair for JJ McCarthy. The
[14:58] Speaker 4: bar of how he's being judged should be higher than
[15:01] Speaker 4: a lot of random young quarterbacks on bad teams. When
[15:04] Speaker 4: you play for crappy franchises and you lose. I expect that,
[15:07] Speaker 4: Like whoever the Carolina Panthers draft, I don't expect it
[15:12] Speaker 4: to look great. But when you get Justin Jefferson in
[15:15] Speaker 4: his prime, Howkinson, Jordan Addison, Kevin o'connoff. We had a
[15:19] Speaker 4: coaching draft, where would Kevin o' he'd go in the
[15:21] Speaker 4: top five? Yes, so everything, And this was Trey Lance's thing.
[15:26] Speaker 4: When you get drafted to a team whose expectations are, yeah,
[15:29] Speaker 4: let's win fourteen games and compete for the conference championship, you.
[15:32] Speaker 3: Just get judged a lot differently.
[15:34] Speaker 4: And I'll give JJ credit in the Bears game, he
[15:37] Speaker 4: had huge moments in a big time today. At the
[15:40] Speaker 4: end of the game, with the game on the line,
[15:43] Speaker 4: his coach put in his hands and he delivered. And
[15:45] Speaker 4: that's where I think a lot of his defenders go
[15:47] Speaker 4: with the quote unquote he's a winner. There is some
[15:50] Speaker 4: winning characteristics when you're comfortable in big moments. You go
[15:53] Speaker 4: back to that moment against Alabama where it looked like
[15:56] Speaker 4: Harbaugh had this all time great roster and he was
[15:59] Speaker 4: gonna lose in the in the playoffs. To Nick saban
[16:01] Speaker 4: On probably, I bet Nick would say one of his
[16:03] Speaker 4: worst ever playoff teams. JJ made some great plays. You
[16:06] Speaker 4: watched his first start against the Bears, Big Spot made
[16:09] Speaker 4: some great plays. And today on I thought they were
[16:13] Speaker 4: just gonna run it and just hey, lean it on floors.
[16:15] Speaker 4: They put in his hands. Great throw, Colin, not a
[16:17] Speaker 4: good throw, a great deal.
[16:19] Speaker 3: Yeah, Well, when I watched him at Michigan, that was
[16:22] Speaker 3: always my take. Moves, Well, gritty kid didn't make a
[16:25] Speaker 3: ton of big throws, but he'd make one or two
[16:28] Speaker 3: NFL Sunday throws. He can make the big throws. So
[16:32] Speaker 3: I just don't have a ton you know. I mean, like,
[16:34] Speaker 3: say what you want about bow knicks. I've got like
[16:36] Speaker 3: a six game winning streak and he's got a one
[16:39] Speaker 3: nineteen passer rating, nine touchdowns, no pick in the fourth quarter.
[16:42] Speaker 3: I've got a lot of samples of bow knicks. He
[16:45] Speaker 3: can have gaps, but late he's really good. So I
[16:49] Speaker 3: with JJ, I've never been a huge believer, but I thought,
[16:54] Speaker 3: you know what, to go to Detroit, you got the deal. Well,
[16:56] Speaker 3: you know, you win in a lot of different ways.
[17:00] Speaker 3: Every Sunday for Brady was great. That Teddy Bruski crew.
[17:04] Speaker 3: There were days that Tom didn't do a lot of
[17:06] Speaker 3: heavy lifting. He was twenty at twenty eight with a
[17:09] Speaker 3: lot of underneath stuff.
[17:10] Speaker 4: So yeah, if I was going to defend, you know,
[17:15] Speaker 4: JJ hasn't been playing, Carson has or but definitely Caleb Williams.
[17:19] Speaker 4: They're i mean Caleb's defense. Sometimes you watch the Bears
[17:22] Speaker 4: on defense and they just look atrocious in Minnesota till today.
[17:26] Speaker 4: They had been pretty bad this season, Colin, I mean
[17:29] Speaker 4: today was and even today they gave it. It's not
[17:30] Speaker 4: like they gave up ten points. I mean, and they
[17:33] Speaker 4: had some drop balls. I mean there were plays to
[17:35] Speaker 4: be made. Like the defense is on those two teams,
[17:38] Speaker 4: I mean, bow Knicks. We might have just watched the
[17:41] Speaker 4: two best defense in the league play each other today, right,
[17:43] Speaker 4: The physicality of Denver and Houston and how good their
[17:45] Speaker 4: defensive lines are. So anytime you have a defense that
[17:48] Speaker 4: is that good does back you up when you're not
[17:52] Speaker 4: making plays. But I'd say all three of these guys
[17:55] Speaker 4: have one thing going for him, JJ McCarthy. Now, obviously
[17:58] Speaker 4: Caleb and bow Knicks making plays in big spots. And
[18:01] Speaker 4: I think when you look at Caleb and Bonnicks, they've
[18:04] Speaker 4: had a lot of snaps now in their career.
[18:05] Speaker 3: Well, they also have Sean Payton. I mean, look at
[18:08] Speaker 3: the coaches.
[18:09] Speaker 4: Kevin O'Connell, Ben Johnson, Ben Johnson.

[19:49] Speaker 3: You know what's remarkable to me, and maybe it's I
[19:52] Speaker 3: was thinking about this today. So the Rams beat the
[19:54] Speaker 3: Saints thirty four to ten. Time of possession was forty
[19:57] Speaker 3: three minutes to seventeen. I mean it was it almost
[20:00] Speaker 3: felt like a practice. Is that whereas Philadelphia and Green
[20:05] Speaker 3: Bay kind of struggle to figure out what they are
[20:09] Speaker 3: because the Dodgers are taking so much glare in Los
[20:13] Speaker 3: Angeles away from football and should.
[20:18] Speaker 1: The Rams are really good.
[20:20] Speaker 3: I mean we forget they went in London and they
[20:24] Speaker 3: blow out Jacksonville like thirty five to seven.
[20:28] Speaker 2: Rams.
[20:28] Speaker 3: Right now, john are really really good. Pooka came back today,
[20:34] Speaker 3: Korum played okay. They have a two headed run game. Now,
[20:38] Speaker 3: they have four healthy tight ends, Jordan Winningham that sixth
[20:44] Speaker 3: round draft pick. They have a sixth and a seventh
[20:46] Speaker 3: round wide receiver that can play a little bit. The
[20:48] Speaker 3: defense is excellent up front, I think quietly. I mean,
[20:53] Speaker 3: if you took and I really believe this, I think
[20:56] Speaker 3: the Rams are the most consistent, best coached right now,
[21:02] Speaker 3: healthiest team. I don't think the old line is great.
[21:05] Speaker 3: I think it's very good. I think they have a
[21:07] Speaker 3: great guard tandem. But I you know, and I had
[21:12] Speaker 3: this was a lower right hand corner game as I
[21:15] Speaker 3: was watching Kansas City and Buffalo. But Jesus, I mean
[21:18] Speaker 3: it was. I mean, we've seen a lot of upsets
[21:21] Speaker 3: this year and a lot of weird shit. That thing
[21:24] Speaker 3: today was a practice. It was just it was just
[21:28] Speaker 3: easy peasy, and I mean it's Stafford. At one point,
[21:32] Speaker 3: I don't know what he finished. He had four touchdowns,
[21:34] Speaker 3: no picks, Jesus, they were getting seven yards of carry.
[21:39] Speaker 3: The rams are really good.
[21:41] Speaker 4: He was thirty four to thirty two for two hundred
[21:43] Speaker 4: eighty yards and four touchdowns.
[21:44] Speaker 3: Thirty four to forty two.
[21:46] Speaker 4: Yeah, the other or no, twenty four to thirty two,
[21:50] Speaker 4: oh for two eighty so he had eight incompletions. I'd
[21:53] Speaker 4: say the scary thing these last couple of games is
[21:56] Speaker 4: DeVante has five touchdowns. So when that you figure out
[21:59] Speaker 4: that report to go along with Puka. Now Pook at
[22:01] Speaker 4: any moment, you know, take some vicious hits. He runs
[22:04] Speaker 4: guys over. You know, can this guy stay healthy? But
[22:09] Speaker 4: those two guys are on the field right now. They're
[22:11] Speaker 4: as good of a one to two combos like in
[22:14] Speaker 4: terms of production and what they bring to the tables,
[22:16] Speaker 4: like chasing Higgins. They're on kind of unstoppable. And the
[22:20] Speaker 4: one thing with DeVante, he's very comfortable with the high
[22:23] Speaker 4: end veteran quarterback in his prime with Aaron it's kind
[22:27] Speaker 4: of starting to feel like that those guys cohesion, especially
[22:29] Speaker 4: in the in the red zone, has Matt Stafford kind
[22:33] Speaker 4: of quietly because you know, today I don't think a
[22:36] Speaker 4: lot of people are dialed into the Saints game, right,
[22:39] Speaker 4: But four touchdowns five touchdowns Jack, I think he threw
[22:42] Speaker 4: three in that loss against the Niners. He's got to
[22:45] Speaker 4: be directly in the mix.
[22:46] Speaker 3: So I have said this before. This sounds crazy. So
[22:50] Speaker 3: he was better than Aaron Rodgers in high school, and
[22:53] Speaker 3: he was better than Aaron in college, and he was
[22:55] Speaker 3: better than Aaron for the first four years of his
[22:57] Speaker 3: NFL career. He's been better than Aaron for the last
[23:00] Speaker 3: four years of his NFL career. Aaron had a ten
[23:02] Speaker 3: eleven year stratch at Green Bay, where Matt Stafford was.
[23:07] Speaker 3: You know, he was with a losing organization and Aaron
[23:10] Speaker 3: had the well run outfit. What if Matt Stafford wins
[23:15] Speaker 3: another Super Bowl, now, think about that. He's got a
[23:18] Speaker 3: better playoff record. He was better early, better late. If
[23:25] Speaker 3: Matt Stafford win, well, he's already a hall I think
[23:28] Speaker 3: he's a Hall of Famer now right, Matt Stafford's a
[23:30] Speaker 3: Hall of Fame right now.
[23:31] Speaker 4: I put him.
[23:32] Speaker 3: Yeah, what if Matt Stafford wins a second Super Bowl?
[23:36] Speaker 3: He's always been considered one of the best arm talents
[23:39] Speaker 3: of our generation. That's indisputable. You could ask anybody the
[23:44] Speaker 3: Brady's ask Aaron asked Far they all go, yeah, Stafford's it.
[23:49] Speaker 3: Where do you put him all the time? Serious question?
[23:51] Speaker 3: Matt Stafford wins a second Super Bowl? I'm telling you
[23:55] Speaker 3: there's not a lot of guys I'd put above him.
[23:57] Speaker 3: I mean, he didn't have he didn't have quite the
[24:00] Speaker 3: gravitas of your Brady, Montana, Manning, and Elway. But Marino's
[24:05] Speaker 3: got no super Bowls. He's got two. I don't know
[24:10] Speaker 3: Stafford is watching him this season? Shit, man, he is.
[24:14] Speaker 3: He is dialed in, He's comfortable.
[24:18] Speaker 1: I don't know.
[24:18] Speaker 3: What do you do with him all time? If he
[24:19] Speaker 3: wins a second Well.
[24:21] Speaker 4: To me, it's hard. I mean you could make the argument,
[24:23] Speaker 4: Aaron's a top five guy, you know, with Manning, Montana,
[24:27] Speaker 4: Brady Elway, pretty short list to me, I don't think
[24:31] Speaker 4: most people would include Stafford in the top ten of quarterbacks. Now,
[24:35] Speaker 4: granted he played for the Lions, not the Dan Campbellions.
[24:37] Speaker 3: Would you have put him by if he has a
[24:38] Speaker 3: second Super Bowl. He's a better arm talent than Drew Brees.
[24:42] Speaker 1: Matt.
[24:43] Speaker 4: Yeah, to me, there is not if I could get here,
[24:46] Speaker 4: here's the argument. If you could get twenty three year
[24:49] Speaker 4: old Matt Stafford or and start listing out quarterbacks, he
[24:53] Speaker 4: would go ahead of a lot of guys because he's
[24:56] Speaker 4: showing that. What if Matt Stafford had been drafted by
[24:58] Speaker 4: a hardball brother an Andy Reid a Sean Payton right
[25:02] Speaker 4: when he was twenty three, instead of going to the Lions,
[25:05] Speaker 4: who always drafted high right and they're two best players
[25:08] Speaker 4: beside him quit at thirty years old. I mean, it's
[25:12] Speaker 4: a pretty the Lions that if you're a twelve year
[25:14] Speaker 4: old kid right now, you can't even comprehend this conversation.
[25:17] Speaker 4: But I do think that the time with the Lions,
[25:21] Speaker 4: he has had years where he's thrown a lot of picks,
[25:23] Speaker 4: he can be a little reckless. The way he's playing
[25:26] Speaker 4: right now, though, like his ceiling. One thing I will
[25:28] Speaker 4: say about this, His ceiling is as high as any player.
[25:32] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[25:33] Speaker 4: Ever, like he can go toe to toe when he's on.
[25:36] Speaker 4: I say this about Camp. Camp can have individual games
[25:39] Speaker 4: where he can outplay any guy in the league and
[25:41] Speaker 4: that was prime Brady, prime Manning. Now Stafford's a better
[25:44] Speaker 4: player than Camp but in that same vein of like,
[25:46] Speaker 4: if you get Stafford in the right day or the
[25:48] Speaker 4: right month, he can just be the best player in
[25:50] Speaker 4: the league now. And I do think this second kind
[25:54] Speaker 4: of iteration of his career with Sean is going to
[25:57] Speaker 4: be a really powerful moment for his career, and he'll
[26:00] Speaker 4: have like the Kurt Warner type the individual seasons. I
[26:03] Speaker 4: just think it's hard to shake that that lion stretch,
[26:06] Speaker 4: because well, winning and losing isn't a quarterback statistic. Most
[26:09] Speaker 4: good quarterbacks win a lot. Not all his fault, but
[26:12] Speaker 4: I do think he probably developed some bad habits there.
[26:16] Speaker 3: Let's talk some World series. So that's about as good
[26:20] Speaker 3: a World Series, especially Game six and seven as I've
[26:23] Speaker 3: ever seen in my life. So I, you know, I
[26:26] Speaker 3: thought it was really interesting. You know, Dave Roberts pulled
[26:29] Speaker 3: all these levers, you know, like he just pulled all
[26:33] Speaker 3: these levers, and to win a World Series where you know,
[26:37] Speaker 3: he puts in Rojas and then the out the defensive
[26:41] Speaker 3: outfielder in the ninth and he goes with Yoshi again.
[26:46] Speaker 3: Everything worked.
[26:47] Speaker 2: But I think, you know, as I was.
[26:49] Speaker 3: I was talking to a friend about this, is that Otani,
[26:53] Speaker 3: Roki and Yoshi, and right now Yoshi is arguably the
[26:57] Speaker 3: best pitcher, and Otani is the best player. He's been
[27:00] Speaker 3: moved to the pen. But these Japanese stars and Japanese
[27:03] Speaker 3: baseball is like really high high Triple A. It's not
[27:06] Speaker 3: quite the Bigs, but it's there's great players and it's
[27:10] Speaker 3: a The Dodgers have so separated financially from everybody else
[27:17] Speaker 3: on I mean on the West coast that I mean,
[27:21] Speaker 3: they always had money. But the gap now between the
[27:23] Speaker 3: Dodgers and the Giants and everybody else, the Angels and
[27:27] Speaker 3: the Mariners, is that these Japanese stars, between weather and
[27:32] Speaker 3: proximity and how well run the organization is. And the
[27:36] Speaker 3: Dodgers are smart, so they said, listen. The only downside
[27:38] Speaker 3: the taxes just to fer the payment, so you can
[27:40] Speaker 3: get paid when you've retired and lived somewhere else.
[27:44] Speaker 2: Is that.
[27:45] Speaker 3: A friend of mine in New York was saying, God,
[27:46] Speaker 3: our teams are bad, but I said, New York is cold,
[27:50] Speaker 3: it's intense, a much harsher media. The city tax La
[27:54] Speaker 3: has spread out. You can hide. I mean, I never
[27:57] Speaker 3: see I was in La nine years. I'm here right now.
[28:01] Speaker 3: You never see pro athletes in LA. You can just hot.
[28:03] Speaker 3: You never see celebrities in LA, and they're everywhere. There's writers, directors.
[28:08] Speaker 3: I mean, look how many pro teams were in LA.
[28:09] Speaker 3: You never see athletes ever.
[28:12] Speaker 1: It's just so spread out.
[28:13] Speaker 3: There's so many gated communities. Calabasa's Hidden Hills, Malibu. You know,
[28:19] Speaker 3: everybody's got these enclaves, Beverly Hills, bel Air, Windy Roads,
[28:23] Speaker 3: you can hide thousand oaks. And I think I think
[28:27] Speaker 3: they I think the Dodgers right now. Steve Cohen's got
[28:31] Speaker 3: money with the Mets, the Yankees have money. They just
[28:35] Speaker 3: feel like with these Japanese stars. And you know the
[28:38] Speaker 3: other thing, John, those guys don't listen to our media.
[28:42] Speaker 3: It's like international NBA players. They come here, they play,
[28:45] Speaker 3: and then they go home. They don't get caught up.
[28:48] Speaker 3: They play. So I mean, Yoshi plays so loose in
[28:53] Speaker 3: these big spots. He's so unaffected by the intensity and
[28:57] Speaker 3: the chaos of the World Series. I don't know. I
[29:01] Speaker 3: just look at the Dodgers and I'm not sure there's
[29:03] Speaker 3: another organization in North America that's run like they are.
[29:07] Speaker 4: One of my best friends played college baseball, and one
[29:09] Speaker 4: of his teammates, you know, was like a fringe big leaguer,
[29:12] Speaker 4: triple A guy, and signed a deal with the Japanese
[29:15] Speaker 4: team when Otani right before he came over, when he
[29:18] Speaker 4: was alleged over there, and they went over and visited
[29:21] Speaker 4: and went to the games, and they were at the
[29:23] Speaker 4: highest level, and they said that it felt like an
[29:26] Speaker 4: SEC football game. The intensity in the environment in Japan,
[29:30] Speaker 4: the way these Yamamoto and Otani grew up playing, I
[29:34] Speaker 4: mean they make it right. When they're sixteen, seventeen, eighteen
[29:37] Speaker 4: years old started playing in that league and they just
[29:39] Speaker 4: said the intensity of the crowd would be like going
[29:41] Speaker 4: to Alabama Auburn. How much these people know about baseball
[29:44] Speaker 4: and how much they care. So these guys the bright
[29:46] Speaker 4: light's completely unfazed. When Otani was like one of twenty
[29:50] Speaker 4: five through the first whatever of the playoffs, it wasn't
[29:53] Speaker 4: because he was overwhelmed. He couldn't see the baseball right.
[29:57] Speaker 4: But the difference I would say of baseball, the Warriors
[30:00] Speaker 4: can't win unless Steph is incredible during the playoffs. Right
[30:03] Speaker 4: in the NFL, you could have a random guy make
[30:06] Speaker 4: a big play in a Super Bowl or an NFC championship.
[30:09] Speaker 4: But your stars, your star quarterback, your star pass rusher
[30:11] Speaker 4: have to come through or you will lose. In baseball,
[30:14] Speaker 4: that's not really how it works. Yeah, I mean I
[30:16] Speaker 4: was a Giants fan. Cody Ross in twenty ten hit
[30:19] Speaker 4: home runs off Roy Halliday that no one saw coming
[30:21] Speaker 4: in Philadelphia. The Dodgers won the World Series last night.
[30:24] Speaker 4: You could argue because they rolled out four guys they're
[30:26] Speaker 4: paying a combined one point five billion dollars two or
[30:29] Speaker 4: because their ninth hitter in the in the ninth inning
[30:32] Speaker 4: hits a game tying home run where they were going
[30:35] Speaker 4: to lose the World Series, and then that same guy
[30:38] Speaker 4: almost falls throws home and then their backup center fielder
[30:43] Speaker 4: who had been benched. I'm watching with my wife. She
[30:46] Speaker 4: falls out of her chair.
[30:48] Speaker 1: She's like, what just happened?
[30:49] Speaker 4: That had to be one of the crazier plays in
[30:52] Speaker 4: World Series because it looked like he was going to
[30:54] Speaker 4: basket catch it, and this random center fielder tackles him
[30:57] Speaker 4: like he's Ed Reid across the middle and saves the game.
[31:00] Speaker 4: But that's baseball, it's not. It wasn't no tany hitting.
[31:03] Speaker 4: The walk up Will Smith, Will Smith Rojas and that
[31:07] Speaker 4: big guy in center field.
[31:09] Speaker 3: Yeah, it's and that's.
[31:11] Speaker 4: What makes baseball pretty unique in the playoffs. It's not
[31:14] Speaker 4: just your stars.
[31:15] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[31:15] Speaker 3: And I think and again, even when if you go
[31:18] Speaker 3: back and look at the great Yankee teams with Jeter
[31:20] Speaker 3: and Bernie and Posada, you know it was Scott Brocious
[31:24] Speaker 3: from mcmnville, Oregon coming up big. So like nobody had
[31:28] Speaker 3: a problem when the Yankees were buying the best players
[31:32] Speaker 3: because people understood that Posada and Jeter, that was part
[31:36] Speaker 3: of the Yankee farm system. Well go look at the Dodgers.
[31:42] Speaker 3: They haven't missed. I mean they they draft I mean
[31:44] Speaker 3: Max Munsey was released from Oakland. They I think they
[31:47] Speaker 3: traded for Blake Snell. I mean, these guys are available
[31:49] Speaker 3: on the market. The Steinbrenners could have afforded to buy Yoshi.
[31:55] Speaker 3: They spent three hundred million. The Dodgers said three thirty five.
[31:58] Speaker 3: They don't win the series without him, so they identify
[32:02] Speaker 3: who they want. They are aggressive. I think we're the
[32:05] Speaker 3: Dodgers where I see their money being an advantage because
[32:09] Speaker 3: Mookie Betts did not outside of September, just didn't hit
[32:12] Speaker 3: this year, played a very good short stuff, didn't hit.
[32:15] Speaker 3: Freddie Freeman's more offensive the defensive player, and Otani had
[32:19] Speaker 3: real struggles at the plate throughout the playoffs where the
[32:22] Speaker 3: Dodgers have an advantage a the Asian Stars, obviously, but
[32:26] Speaker 3: it's to get to get a glass Now or a
[32:29] Speaker 3: Snell who may not give you a ton of starts
[32:31] Speaker 3: during the regular season. Most teams cannot afford to pay
[32:35] Speaker 3: a guy if he's not giving you twenty five. I mean,
[32:37] Speaker 3: Yoshi's the only guy that he never misses a start,
[32:41] Speaker 3: like he's a true bona fide ace like Verlin or
[32:44] Speaker 3: in his prime, you're getting thirty starts. They can go
[32:46] Speaker 3: get a Snell and a Glass now remarkably talented guys
[32:50] Speaker 3: and get ten twelve starts in the regular season and
[32:53] Speaker 3: just push them off to September. That's the advantage they have.
[32:56] Speaker 3: But you can also lots of teams could defer payments
[32:59] Speaker 3: and they don't. The Dodgers do. So. Yes, money is
[33:02] Speaker 3: clearly an ex but I think to your point, Yoshi
[33:07] Speaker 3: was great, but there were a lot of guys slumping.
[33:09] Speaker 3: I mean, if you go back to this World Series,
[33:11] Speaker 3: the Blue Jays out hit the Dodgers, I mean the
[33:13] Speaker 3: Dodgers in game six to one. I think they had
[33:16] Speaker 3: four hits. I mean they struggled the whole series to hit.
[33:20] Speaker 4: I actually think baseball is much closer to football in
[33:23] Speaker 4: terms of in the Dodgers was two years ago. I
[33:26] Speaker 4: mean almost got beat by the Padres in the play.
[33:28] Speaker 4: It's the baseball. I don't care how good your team
[33:30] Speaker 4: is in basketball. When I got the Kevin Durant Warriors,
[33:33] Speaker 4: I'm gonna need Achilles tears and ACL tears to loose.
[33:35] Speaker 4: Other than that, I'm a lock to win. Shaq, Kobe Laker,
[33:38] Speaker 4: some of these teams, it's gonna be ninety percent chance
[33:41] Speaker 4: I win. The Dodgers roster can't get much better, and
[33:44] Speaker 4: it was really difficult for them to win. I was
[33:47] Speaker 4: just say they probably should have lost. You know, that's
[33:49] Speaker 4: that's baseball.
[33:50] Speaker 3: Though they won a World Series last year with really
[33:53] Speaker 3: average starting pitching, and they won a World Series this
[33:56] Speaker 3: year with a really average bullpen, which is verse impossible
[34:00] Speaker 3: to do if you're leaking in the back end. I mean,
[34:03] Speaker 3: Yoshi basically is why they won the World Series. But
[34:06] Speaker 3: I will say, having spent nine years a full time
[34:08] Speaker 3: in Los Angeles, they just don't make a lot of mistakes.
[34:12] Speaker 1: They don't.
[34:12] Speaker 3: I mean, they let Zach Grinkey go. They could have
[34:16] Speaker 3: made a big bid for him. He went to Arizona.
[34:18] Speaker 3: They let Manny Machado go. They don't make a lot
[34:22] Speaker 3: of mistakes. And they've also let Cody Bellinger go. They've
[34:27] Speaker 3: let good players, you know, leave. So money's obviously apart,
[34:35] Speaker 3: but you know, I mean the truth is in the
[34:39] Speaker 3: NBA during the David Stern years, money was a part,
[34:42] Speaker 3: but the New York Knicks weren't winning. Some people don't
[34:44] Speaker 3: spend the money as wisely. I mean, we know game
[34:46] Speaker 3: day revenue, the Giants and the Jets have much greater
[34:48] Speaker 3: game day revenue than green Bay. Green Bay spends their
[34:52] Speaker 3: money more wisely.
[34:54] Speaker 4: When I was working in radio, I got to go
[34:56] Speaker 4: to a lot of the A's were really good then,
[34:58] Speaker 4: kind of in Billy Bean's prime in thes were winning
[35:00] Speaker 4: a bunch of World Series. And I think sometimes with baseball,
[35:04] Speaker 4: especially probably over the last decade, it gets overlooked because
[35:06] Speaker 4: we spend so much time talking about these kind of
[35:09] Speaker 4: the quote unquote nerds running the sport. I do think
[35:12] Speaker 4: the best kind of nerds understand character and cohesion, and
[35:16] Speaker 4: one thing you watch with the Dodgers. Like feels like
[35:18] Speaker 4: all these guys like each other and they had a
[35:19] Speaker 4: good I would say with the Blue Jays, it jumped
[35:22] Speaker 4: off the screen. It was like this team looks like
[35:24] Speaker 4: a college team all playing together. The San Francsco Giants,
[35:27] Speaker 4: you always had that Billy Bean always did a really
[35:29] Speaker 4: good job of finding the right mix of guys. Baseball
[35:32] Speaker 4: is about more and you watch the Yankees, it seems
[35:34] Speaker 4: like missing a little something that's the knock, Like at
[35:37] Speaker 4: the end of the day in baseball, you still got
[35:39] Speaker 4: to have some fast guys.
[35:39] Speaker 1: That can run.
[35:40] Speaker 4: And you watch the Dodgers. Definitely the Blue Jays, they
[35:43] Speaker 4: got their best players are athletes. The Yankees are a
[35:45] Speaker 4: good example. Their best players all look like, you know,
[35:48] Speaker 4: move like defensive tackles. It's like you doesn't need a
[35:50] Speaker 4: little speech.
[35:51] Speaker 3: Well, the Yankees strike out too much. They don't play
[35:53] Speaker 3: small ball. The Dodgers have the ability to. I mean, listen,
[35:57] Speaker 3: Toronto hit the ball more consistently. The Dodgers had the
[36:01] Speaker 3: better starting pitching. I mean, if you go back to
[36:04] Speaker 3: the last year's World Series, the only time the Yankees
[36:07] Speaker 3: competed with the Dodgers is when Garrett Cole pitched, the
[36:09] Speaker 3: Yankees didn't look athletic enough, didn't run the bases. Well,
[36:12] Speaker 3: they're not a very good defensive team. The Yankees strikeout
[36:15] Speaker 3: too much, and they have tons of money, so you know,
[36:19] Speaker 3: I mean, I think.
[36:20] Speaker 4: That's one of the most thrilling endings to a World
[36:22] Speaker 4: Series all.
[36:24] Speaker 3: I think Game six, in Game seven, the final innings
[36:29] Speaker 3: are the greatest, most drama field. You have to go
[36:32] Speaker 3: back to the seventy five I think it was seventy
[36:34] Speaker 3: five World Series. It was Reds against the Red Sox.
[36:36] Speaker 3: It's that Carlton fiskomer at Fenway where he's you know, yeah,
[36:40] Speaker 3: waving at it, and I remember watching that as a kid.
[36:43] Speaker 3: I mean, that's the first baseball memory I have is
[36:46] Speaker 3: like the seventy four, seventy five, seventy six Cincinnati Reds
[36:48] Speaker 3: because I was in Seattle, we didn't have the Mariners yet,
[36:51] Speaker 3: and that's when I fell in love with football over baseball.
[36:54] Speaker 3: But the mid seventies, the big Red Machine, I fell
[36:56] Speaker 3: in love with it, and that had I mean, I
[36:58] Speaker 3: can go back to that series. Names that you guys
[37:01] Speaker 3: you've never heard, but I thought the magnitude it was
[37:04] Speaker 3: just so I mean, you had Dave Roberts had to
[37:07] Speaker 3: pull so many damn levers, you know, going with Rojas
[37:13] Speaker 3: like old guy. I'm not even sure when his last
[37:16] Speaker 3: home run was. Dave Roberts said after his wife kept
[37:19] Speaker 3: telling Rojas the whole series, you're going to hit a
[37:22] Speaker 3: home run in this series. You are, And he's like,
[37:24] Speaker 3: I'm not playing, I'm not kidding up. She's like, you're
[37:27] Speaker 3: going to hit a home run tonight. So I just
[37:30] Speaker 3: thought it was It was just everything. The announcing the
[37:33] Speaker 3: imagery Fox the Blue Jays, I mean Blue Jays over
[37:37] Speaker 3: under was like seventy eight and a half. Talk about
[37:40] Speaker 3: a team that just mashed and overachieved.
[37:42] Speaker 2: Good for them.
[37:52] Speaker 3: Let's pivot now to the Bears. Sure they got the
[37:56] Speaker 3: coach in the quarterback, the defense stinks. We still don't
[37:59] Speaker 3: like the owner, the front office. I doubt I love
[38:03] Speaker 3: the coach. The quarterbacks super talented. There's a lot that they're
[38:06] Speaker 3: not doing right, like a political party. The Bears now
[38:10] Speaker 3: lead the NFL in big plays. That's good for me,
[38:13] Speaker 3: and isn't it. They're a flawed team from ownership down.
[38:18] Speaker 3: But they got the two things that appears right.
[38:21] Speaker 1: Absolutely, there's no question. I mean the one I always
[38:24] Speaker 1: say is it's a fun turn of phrase. Is like
[38:27] Speaker 1: the Bengals were the Bungles until they got Joe Burrow.
[38:30] Speaker 1: You know, the Chiefs didn't win a single game with
[38:33] Speaker 1: the quarterback they drafted since Todd Blackledge and then it
[38:36] Speaker 1: was Patrick Mahomes, you know, So like it can change
[38:40] Speaker 1: on a dime. And I find it to be amazing
[38:45] Speaker 1: that the Bears are fourth and rushing fourth in yards,
[38:49] Speaker 1: sixth and scoring crazy back in and explosive plays, and
[38:52] Speaker 1: everyone's like, is Caleb good? I'm like, listen, and by
[38:58] Speaker 1: the way, to be fair, to be fair as someone
[39:00] Speaker 1: who's watched every snap of every game closer than any
[39:03] Speaker 1: team in the NFL, like they got some of those
[39:07] Speaker 1: numbers got fat against Dallas and Cincinnati, objectively true. And
[39:11] Speaker 1: some of the explosive play stuff is running game based,
[39:15] Speaker 1: and they've been much better running out of the by Washington,
[39:18] Speaker 1: New Orleans, Baltimore and then the game last week. But
[39:24] Speaker 1: so it's not all because of Caleb. Caleb's not playing
[39:26] Speaker 1: as well as Drake Many. Caleb's not playing as well
[39:28] Speaker 1: as Josh Allen or Patrick Mahomes. But if you told
[39:31] Speaker 1: me twenty five games into his career, on his third
[39:37] Speaker 1: play caller and second head coach, that they would have,
[39:40] Speaker 1: by the numbers, a top ten offense and a winning
[39:43] Speaker 1: record in year two. One hundred percent of Bears fans
[39:48] Speaker 1: would have signed up for it.
[39:49] Speaker 3: That's what I always tell whenever my wife's, you know,
[39:52] Speaker 3: getting a little concerned about our kids. I'm like, if
[39:56] Speaker 3: i'd have told you twenty years ago when we met,
[39:59] Speaker 3: none of them would be in jail, none would have
[40:01] Speaker 3: a drug problem, We'd have a vacation home and a
[40:03] Speaker 3: nice house, and our kids would still call us. Would
[40:05] Speaker 3: you have signed up for it? Yes, then don't worry
[40:07] Speaker 3: about tomorrow. It's all good. Think about this. So my
[40:12] Speaker 3: take is every NFL offense as a whole. Let me
[40:16] Speaker 3: give an example. I'm gonna give you the best offenses
[40:19] Speaker 3: in the NFL two weeks ago. What you thought Green
[40:23] Speaker 3: Bay today? They have no offensive identity. These are the
[40:27] Speaker 3: better offenses the Rams Pukazoa was hurt and Stafford has
[40:31] Speaker 3: no mobility. Philadelphia depends on the game in the half.
[40:36] Speaker 3: Denver terrible offense for three quarters every single game. San
[40:43] Speaker 3: Francisco battle line totally Christian McCaffrey dependent. Indianapolis. Does anybody
[40:48] Speaker 3: like Daniel Jones. I just named the good offenses in
[40:52] Speaker 3: the NFL, right right. So the truth is, we pay
[40:55] Speaker 3: so much attention to offense, Danny, and I'm guilty of this.
[40:59] Speaker 3: We nitpick the Bears, big plays, run the ball, well coached, taken, no.
[41:07] Speaker 1: Doubt, no doubt, and and I have I came into
[41:12] Speaker 1: the year with optimism, but with zero percent like they're
[41:16] Speaker 1: a contender or they're gonna win the Super Bowl. So
[41:21] Speaker 1: to me, this season has been it's been a little
[41:23] Speaker 1: bit of a heart attack inducing. I might say some
[41:26] Speaker 1: things during these Bear games that if like anyone other
[41:30] Speaker 1: than like Nick right was next to me, I'd be like,
[41:32] Speaker 1: that might get me canceled. Uh you know what I mean.
[41:35] Speaker 1: Like it's a stressful watch. But I have no illusions
[41:39] Speaker 1: that this is a great team. Like the defense is flawed,
[41:43] Speaker 1: the quarterback is young, it's a new system that they've got.
[41:47] Speaker 1: They've had serious left tackle questions. Their two best cornerbacks
[41:50] Speaker 1: are hurt. We don't know if Jalen Johnson is coming
[41:53] Speaker 1: back like this year, he'll come back eventually, obviously, Like
[41:56] Speaker 1: they're not gonna win the Super Bowl. They probably won't
[41:58] Speaker 1: make the playoffs, though they might we'll see because weird
[42:00] Speaker 1: things happen in the NFL. But again, like, do you
[42:04] Speaker 1: have the coaching quarterback? I can work with that. Yeah.
[42:08] Speaker 1: Because they also it's not just like they got a
[42:11] Speaker 1: lot of talent. I hear this all the time, like, oh,
[42:14] Speaker 1: Doonsay is talented? Loveland is talented. They're right. Tackle Darnell
[42:18] Speaker 1: right looks like a stud for you.
[42:20] Speaker 3: Andre Swift is an excellent top twelve back.
[42:23] Speaker 1: Yeah, manung guy who has been has been great the
[42:26] Speaker 1: last you know, game and a half since Swift has
[42:28] Speaker 1: been hurt. Looks looks good that they they have pieces,
[42:32] Speaker 1: they have talent, and they are clearly on the up
[42:35] Speaker 1: and up. And Caleb he gives them a ceiling that
[42:41] Speaker 1: feels kind of limitless because of how crazy the physical
[42:44] Speaker 1: talent is. Like if Ben Johnson can actually get him
[42:47] Speaker 1: to be ninety percent of what his talent suggests that
[42:51] Speaker 1: he should be, the Bears are going to be good
[42:53] Speaker 1: for the next decade. Darnald's an amazing story. We were
[42:57] Speaker 1: talking about this in the show today.
[42:58] Speaker 3: I said, you see all the time where a great actor,
[43:01] Speaker 3: Tom Hanks takes a bad movie the Terminal, and you're like, oh,
[43:05] Speaker 3: Marlon Brando did that. You'd have you know, on the
[43:07] Speaker 3: waterfront and he had six bombs. You see great restaurants
[43:11] Speaker 3: lose a chef, they go from Michelin star to just
[43:14] Speaker 3: a really good restaurant. You never see terrible hot dog
[43:18] Speaker 3: and a stick becomes zaggat rated. Like, that's not the
[43:21] Speaker 3: way it works. There is no terrible to great from actors.
[43:24] Speaker 3: You're either like straight to video. Lindsay Lohan doesn't become
[43:28] Speaker 3: Meryl Streep. It doesn't work that way. Except Sam Darnald,
[43:33] Speaker 3: it's not. Denny was terrible, then he became pretty good
[43:35] Speaker 3: because Baker won a playoff game and in that year
[43:38] Speaker 3: had a ninety six passer writing. He was never terrible, right.
[43:42] Speaker 1: I mean, Daniel Jones got a second contract. D Daniel
[43:45] Speaker 1: Jones won a playoff game. Sam Darnald was terrible, but
[43:49] Speaker 1: he also like what did he have forty starts? Thirty
[43:54] Speaker 1: thirty five, thirty eight starts? Like it wasn't like that
[43:57] Speaker 1: large of a body of work. He came into the
[43:59] Speaker 1: league at t one. He was so young to think
[44:02] Speaker 1: about that. He came into the league. Yeah, four years
[44:05] Speaker 1: into the league.
[44:06] Speaker 3: He was younger than guys that were getting drafted, right, Yeah.
[44:10] Speaker 1: And that's I mean that's like, like I think Trevor
[44:13] Speaker 1: Lawrence and Michael Pennox are the same age. Like right now,
[44:17] Speaker 1: it's just like a weird It's like a weird thing
[44:19] Speaker 1: to have to deal with. And so yeah, like, to me,
[44:23] Speaker 1: the most interesting part of this is, I mean, obviously
[44:25] Speaker 1: the Donald story is incredible, and I think, yeah, Seattle
[44:28] Speaker 1: is the only team in the NFL right now top
[44:29] Speaker 1: five in offense and top five in defense, Like we
[44:31] Speaker 1: have to treat them as real. I did not believe
[44:34] Speaker 1: in that Vikings team last year. I'm just not gonna
[44:36] Speaker 1: I do believe in this Seahawks team. But I want
[44:40] Speaker 1: to know what teams are gonna do, Like are the
[44:44] Speaker 1: Colts not gonna give up on Anthony Richardson, Like obviously
[44:48] Speaker 1: Daniel Jones is working. They just traded for Sauce Gardner.
[44:51] Speaker 1: They're all in. They'll probably franchise tag Daniel Jones, I
[44:54] Speaker 1: would imagine. But is the lesson that these teams are
[44:57] Speaker 1: gonna take from Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield and Daniel
[45:02] Speaker 1: Jones being like we can't give up on guys like
[45:05] Speaker 1: we don't have to play them, but we cannot give
[45:08] Speaker 1: up on talent, Like if we truly believe that there
[45:11] Speaker 1: is a franchise quarterback in here. It would be it
[45:14] Speaker 1: would haunt me if I'm a Browns fan to see
[45:18] Speaker 1: Baker Mayfield doing this, or if I'm a Panther fan
[45:22] Speaker 1: to see Baker Mayfield and Sam and Sam Darnold doing this.
[45:25] Speaker 1: I don't know how how you go to sleep, go
[45:27] Speaker 1: to sleep at night?
[45:28] Speaker 3: Okay, so what a what a Baker and Sam have
[45:31] Speaker 3: in common? Baker went to Cleveland and then Carolina poorly
[45:35] Speaker 3: run teams, and then McVeigh said, I like him. Okay, okay,
[45:41] Speaker 3: Sam jets Carolina. Then Kyle Shanahan's like I like him
[45:45] Speaker 3: is that it could be in venture capitalism, it can
[45:48] Speaker 3: be on Wall Street, it can be in sports. The
[45:51] Speaker 3: smart take from the less skilled and the less smart
[45:57] Speaker 3: is that the smartest people in the NFL. Dan Neil
[46:00] Speaker 3: Jones goes from the shipwreck known as the New York
[46:04] Speaker 3: Giants and Kevin O'Connell in season Vulture circles all take him,
[46:10] Speaker 3: and then from there Shane Steiken goes, no, all take him.
[46:13] Speaker 3: Is that there's a handful of super smart offensive guys
[46:17] Speaker 3: and they look at all these the smart people figure
[46:20] Speaker 3: out who can play and who can't. And by the way,
[46:23] Speaker 3: Kyle Shanahan looked at Mac Jones, shocker, Belichick didn't get him.
[46:28] Speaker 3: Jacksonville stumbled, oh, what a shock. Shanahan's like, actually, throws
[46:33] Speaker 3: are really good ball. I think we'll take him. There's
[46:35] Speaker 3: about eight guys in this league now, maybe ten, but eight,
[46:39] Speaker 3: and they're really smart. They're with winning organizations. And this
[46:41] Speaker 3: happens in every walk of life. They go to the
[46:44] Speaker 3: bad organizations with worst gms, bad scouts, lousy coaches, lousy coordinators,
[46:51] Speaker 3: scouting directors that are suboptimal, and they just raid them.
[46:54] Speaker 3: Almost all of these reclamation projects started with bad franchises
[46:58] Speaker 3: and get picked up by the artist gms in the league.
[47:01] Speaker 1: Yeah, but the bad franchises don't believe that they're bad,
[47:04] Speaker 1: like you know, it's delusional. Like so you're right, But
[47:09] Speaker 1: Sean McVay can't sign everybody, Kyle Shanahan can't sign everybody,
[47:13] Speaker 1: like it's some I just I don't know what I think.
[47:17] Speaker 1: Anthony Richardson's a decent example. And listen, Shane Steiken might
[47:20] Speaker 1: just be an awesome coach, like won eight games and
[47:22] Speaker 1: nine games with Gardner Minshew and Anthony Richardson and has
[47:25] Speaker 1: a shot at the one seed with Daniel Jones, right,
[47:27] Speaker 1: like Shane Steiken might just be the next name that
[47:31] Speaker 1: we need to include with Andy Reid and McVeigh and
[47:34] Speaker 1: Shannan is right, it's it's that is that is certainly
[47:38] Speaker 1: on the board. But then my guess is two years
[47:43] Speaker 1: from now, Anthony Richardson is still a cult. They'll just
[47:46] Speaker 1: be like, why I give up on him, Like, well,
[47:49] Speaker 1: we'll just we'll keep him, We'll keep developing him. We're
[47:51] Speaker 1: gonna we drafted him fourth overall. He can run like
[47:54] Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson, but he's built like Cam Newton, like he's
[47:57] Speaker 1: got an arm like Herbert, Like, we're gonna just see
[48:00] Speaker 1: if we can develop him between the years and slow
[48:03] Speaker 1: the game down for him. So it'll just be interesting
[48:05] Speaker 1: to me to see if teams, instead of like cutting
[48:09] Speaker 1: guys loose, be like we'll just we'll sit you for
[48:12] Speaker 1: a little while, like we're not gonna We're not gonna
[48:15] Speaker 1: let the Baker Mayfield story happen to us, because it's
[48:18] Speaker 1: just a painful thing for an organization to go through
[48:20] Speaker 1: to like to see you you drafted the right guy,
[48:24] Speaker 1: so it's not and then he's awesome elsewhere so like
[48:27] Speaker 1: the only It's on you. It's just got to be
[48:29] Speaker 1: such a shameful feeling for those organizations. The volume
