Colin reacts to the Eagles beating the Cowboys 24-20 to open the 2025 NFL season. He highlights the brutal drops from Ceedee Lamb and argues that missing Micah Parson didn’t make the difference for Dallas. He explains how Saquon Barkley managed to make positive plays even in bad situations, and why it’s hard to make sweeping predictions after only one game but was pleasantly surprised by the Cowboys. Finally, he rips Jalen Carter for his stupid decision to spit at Dak Prescott resulting in his ejection. (Timestamps may vary based on advertisements.) [0:56] Speaker 1: All right? Uh. In a pretty surprising outcome, Ladelphia beats
[1:00] Speaker 1: Dallas twenty four to twenty. I would argue that if
[1:03] Speaker 1: Cede Lamb makes that catch, Dallas wins the football game.
[1:07] Speaker 1: Ced Lamb was CD lame. He had a really really
[1:11] Speaker 1: bad night. But I thought Philadelphia did a better job
[1:17] Speaker 1: with second half adjustments. And that's the ball game I
[1:20] Speaker 1: thought overall. I was pretty blown away. Now, Jalen Hurts
[1:25] Speaker 1: comes into this game, He's got the better offensive line,
[1:28] Speaker 1: he's got Saquon Barkley, and he has a at least
[1:31] Speaker 1: a head coach that he's very familiar with. They have
[1:34] Speaker 1: a new oc Kellen Morris gone. And it was kind
[1:38] Speaker 1: of an unimpressive kind of second half adjustment for the Eagles. Offensively,
[1:45] Speaker 1: I have they make great defensive adjustments to get pressure,
[1:48] Speaker 1: but there's a big advantage Jalen Hurts O line, Saquon
[1:51] Speaker 1: Barkley at home, and they looked unbelievable in the first half.
[1:56] Speaker 1: Three drives, two hundred plus yards, three tds. Eagles were flawless.
[2:01] Speaker 1: And everybody points to, well, what about what about Micah? Well,
[2:05] Speaker 1: the Cowboys could not stop the Eagles twice last year
[2:08] Speaker 1: with Micah so and I'll give you an example. I saw.
[2:12] Speaker 1: I saw this last year today, the Cowboys versus the
[2:17] Speaker 1: Eagles without Micah, without Micah one sack in five quarterback hits.
[2:22] Speaker 1: The Cowboys last game with the Eagles with Micah one sack,
[2:27] Speaker 1: and one quarterback hit. Micah wasn't the difference. Okay, So
[2:31] Speaker 1: in the first half, I mean, Philadelphia did this twice
[2:35] Speaker 1: the Dallas last year, and they did it to Kansas
[2:37] Speaker 1: City and the Super Bowl. That offensive line gets rolling
[2:40] Speaker 1: Saquon Barkley, those receivers, they didn't even use aj Brown,
[2:43] Speaker 1: barely looked at him in the first half and were
[2:45] Speaker 1: up and down the field whether or without Micah. At
[2:48] Speaker 1: one point Chris Collins were said, this is the Micah effect. Yeah,
[2:51] Speaker 1: I mean, it's Mike's re literally talented. But I didn't
[2:55] Speaker 1: think that was the ballgame. I think that what blew
[2:59] Speaker 1: me away with Dallas, especially in the first half. DAK
[3:02] Speaker 1: got excellent protection. They don't have a great running back room,
[3:05] Speaker 1: They're not going to be a great run team, but
[3:08] Speaker 1: they opened some rush lanes. And yes, Jalen Carter's absence
[3:13] Speaker 1: changes Philadelphia's interior defense. I mean, it's just no question.
[3:18] Speaker 1: He is the dominant interior defensive lineman along with Chris
[3:21] Speaker 1: Jones in the NFL of the Chiefs. So, but I
[3:24] Speaker 1: thought Dallas in the first half, Dak had time, the
[3:28] Speaker 1: wide receivers got excellent separation. George Pickens looks like he's
[3:33] Speaker 1: a real asset. Although he had a really really bad penalty.
[3:39] Speaker 1: It ended up the Cowboys fumble the first turnover of
[3:42] Speaker 1: the season, but it pushed Dallas back, and who knows
[3:46] Speaker 1: how that drive transpires if they don't get pushed back
[3:50] Speaker 1: on the Pickens penalty. But George Pickens is going to
[3:53] Speaker 1: be an asset that length, his ability to keep the
[3:56] Speaker 1: ball away, the way he stretches out from defensive backs,
[3:59] Speaker 1: because philadelph he's got a great secondary. But I thought
[4:02] Speaker 1: dallas Is o line held up very well. Dak had
[4:04] Speaker 1: a lot of time. I thought Dak played really, really well.
[4:07] Speaker 1: They didn't move him much. He sat in the pocket
[4:10] Speaker 1: at this point in his career, he's a pocket quarterback.
[4:12] Speaker 1: But I thought he was very very effective and Ceedee
[4:15] Speaker 1: Lamb had three drops and the brutal drop back to
[4:19] Speaker 1: back drops on that last drive, and that deep ball
[4:23] Speaker 1: was a beautiful throw by Dak. So I think, if
[4:27] Speaker 1: you're Philadelphia, you made excellent second half defensive adjustments to
[4:33] Speaker 1: get pressure, and you know that ends up being crucial
[4:37] Speaker 1: because Dak was way too comfortable in the first half. Meanwhile,
[4:41] Speaker 1: he threw under duress in the second half. There were
[4:44] Speaker 1: a lot of bang bang plays in the secondary. A
[4:46] Speaker 1: couple of balls could have been picked, but Ceedee Lamb
[4:49] Speaker 1: dropped three balls. A couple of balls could have been caught.
[4:51] Speaker 1: So I came away impressed with Dallas. Philadelphia won back
[4:58] Speaker 1: to back push pushes. I think if you put Saquon
[5:01] Speaker 1: Barkley on the Cowboys and took away Saquon Barkley for
[5:04] Speaker 1: the Eagles, you'd have a different outcome. I thought Saquon's
[5:06] Speaker 1: ability to you know, that one handed catch on the
[5:10] Speaker 1: crucial drive, his just ability to escape a lot of times,
[5:14] Speaker 1: Saquon doesn't even get credit just for picking up three
[5:19] Speaker 1: yards on a play that should should lose a yard.
[5:22] Speaker 1: It's not as long runs that mak him exceptional. It's
[5:26] Speaker 1: the catches out of the backfield. It's taking you know,
[5:29] Speaker 1: these one yard games and making it a three to
[5:31] Speaker 1: a four yard game. He is just a sensational talent
[5:35] Speaker 1: and he got you know, Philadelphia out of little jams
[5:39] Speaker 1: throughout the course of the game. Wiggle here, drop his
[5:42] Speaker 1: shoulder here, make a one hand catch there. Saquon was
[5:44] Speaker 1: voted the best player in the league by players in
[5:47] Speaker 1: a recent poll. He's just a sensational talent and he
[5:51] Speaker 1: does all the little things. Well, he can pick up
[5:54] Speaker 1: a blitz one handed catch. But overall, I think if
[5:58] Speaker 1: you're Dallas, you have to feel great. I mean they've
[6:01] Speaker 1: got one of the best kickers in the league. Their
[6:02] Speaker 1: offensive line in the first half held up. I like
[6:04] Speaker 1: the game plan, Dak look comfortable. Their receivers created separation. Again,
[6:10] Speaker 1: they're the road team, They're the team of the new
[6:12] Speaker 1: coaching staff, George Pickens, the new player. Mike is not there,
[6:15] Speaker 1: Trayvon Diggs didn't practice much, and Dallas had a very
[6:18] Speaker 1: good performance. Ceedee Lamb catches the ball. They win the game,
[6:21] Speaker 1: so listen. It's game one. For a variety of reasons.
[6:27] Speaker 1: Is hard to make any sweeping A general comment about
[6:32] Speaker 1: a Jalen Carter out changes Philadelphia's rush defense. Secondly, you're
[6:38] Speaker 1: tired in the second half, I thought Dallas is. I
[6:42] Speaker 1: thought Dallas looked a little fatigue their defensive front. You know,
[6:48] Speaker 1: you got that O line leaning on you. Longer drives
[6:51] Speaker 1: by Philadelphia. But overall, I mean Dallas's d line. You know,
[6:59] Speaker 1: Mazie Smith was a I wrote this down inactive, so
[7:03] Speaker 1: he's a bust. You know, Mike is no longer there.
[7:08] Speaker 1: Kenny Clarkman in nice play. He's a nice addition. But
[7:12] Speaker 1: you know, considering Mike has gone and Massie Smith is
[7:14] Speaker 1: a bust, they have a little bit of depth up front.
[7:16] Speaker 1: That's encouraging for Dallas. You know, I'm looking at some
[7:21] Speaker 1: of the numbers here. Philadelphia's second half offensive game plan
[7:26] Speaker 1: kind of uninspiring. Again, it's week one, new coordinator. I
[7:30] Speaker 1: don't quite know how to feel about it. Philadelphia was
[7:35] Speaker 1: I mean, Jalen Carter spitting. They had four very early penalties,
[7:40] Speaker 1: four early penalties in the first half. Personal fouls of
[7:45] Speaker 1: Philadelphia wasn't tight and it almost cost him. Yeah, I mean,
[7:51] Speaker 1: in the end, Philadelphia had one hundred and fifty eight
[7:54] Speaker 1: yards rushing. You don't lose a lot of games in
[7:57] Speaker 1: this league with one hundred and fifty eight yards rushing.
[8:00] Speaker 1: But Dallas, you know, Dallas has twenty four first downs.
[8:05] Speaker 1: Dallas averaged five and a half yards of play. I mean,
[8:09] Speaker 1: you got to feel pretty good about that. Dallas had
[8:11] Speaker 1: more total yards, more passing yards themselves, rushed for one
[8:15] Speaker 1: hundred and nineteen yards, had more yards per play, more
[8:19] Speaker 1: first downs, were very effective seven for eleven on third down,
[8:24] Speaker 1: had only four penalties. I mean Mike McCarthy's teams were
[8:28] Speaker 1: penalty plagued, only one turnover in the game. Now Philadelphia
[8:33] Speaker 1: again more rushing yards total, and in the second half
[8:37] Speaker 1: they pulled away in time of possession. They were flawless
[8:40] Speaker 1: in the first half offensively, but overall, I would give
[8:46] Speaker 1: the Eagles a B plus because they won. I would
[8:48] Speaker 1: give Dallas a solid B to B plus. New coaching
[8:52] Speaker 1: staff on the road first game. I mean last year,
[8:55] Speaker 1: I just didn't like Dallas's offensive line. I thought there
[8:58] Speaker 1: was real growth. I thought you had to be encouraged
[9:01] Speaker 1: with the protection Dak Prescott got, especially in the first half,
[9:06] Speaker 1: and Dak hung in there in the second half. I
[9:09] Speaker 1: mean he was under dress in that second half after
[9:11] Speaker 1: the adjustments. I know, I'm going on and on about Dallas.
[9:15] Speaker 1: Maybe you know, if I had come into this game
[9:17] Speaker 1: with a clean slate mentally and not feeling like Dallas
[9:21] Speaker 1: is just going to be a mess, I'm gonna have
[9:24] Speaker 1: to revisit the Dallas schedule tomorrow. On FS one, I
[9:29] Speaker 1: was really impressed, you know. And it's not like Ceedee
[9:32] Speaker 1: Lamb didn't have a bunch of catches. I mean, he
[9:35] Speaker 1: had great separation all night, and those are excellent corners
[9:38] Speaker 1: for the Eagles. So Philadelphia sloppy, maintained a lead at home,
[9:46] Speaker 1: won a game. But I feel I feel differently about
[9:49] Speaker 1: the Cowboys now than I did four hours ago. Let's
[9:54] Speaker 1: address before we go the Jalen Carter spitting moment. First
[10:01] Speaker 1: of all, it's idiotic. Dak did spit first, but was
[10:05] Speaker 1: further away and spit to the ground. Don't get either,
[10:11] Speaker 1: but Jalen Carter has to know better. And that's the
[10:14] Speaker 1: way it always works. It's always the second guy that
[10:16] Speaker 1: gets caught. I mean NBC didn't catch Dak spitting until
[10:21] Speaker 1: later in the game, and they didn't even address it
[10:24] Speaker 1: until later in the game, and they saw it, so
[10:27] Speaker 1: you know, Dak spit more down, Jalen Carter gets closer,
[10:31] Speaker 1: spits at Dak, and you're gonna get ejected. I just
[10:35] Speaker 1: thought overall Philadelphia was loose. But we talked about this
[10:39] Speaker 1: today on the Herd. It's such an emotional team. I mean,
[10:45] Speaker 1: they've got their bodyguard and Sirianni. There was some personal fouls.
[10:51] Speaker 1: That's Philadelphia, their talk radio, of their fans, the intensity
[10:57] Speaker 1: opening the season in Philadelphia, it's just and here's Jalen
[11:01] Speaker 1: Hurts that reservoir of stoicism, calm, mature. I'll tell you
[11:08] Speaker 1: Jalen hurts On that, you know, final drive to seal
[11:11] Speaker 1: the game. I didn't love Dallas, not having like a
[11:14] Speaker 1: spy on him. He's such an effective runner. I overall,
[11:20] Speaker 1: I thought the Eagles' second half coaching adjustments were better
[11:24] Speaker 1: than Dallas, and that falls on Brian Schottenheimer. But I
[11:28] Speaker 1: came into this game with such a low sense of
[11:31] Speaker 1: what the Schottenheimer staff could pull off. I was just
[11:34] Speaker 1: almost blown away that they played a really strong first half.
[11:38] Speaker 1: But I it just there was a lot, it was
[11:42] Speaker 1: just it was Philadelphia. It was a lot of emotions.
[11:44] Speaker 1: They're super Bowl champs. They're feeling themselves. They're spitting, there's ejections,
[11:48] Speaker 1: there's a ton of all these That nine in the
[11:51] Speaker 1: game four very quickly. It was an unpolished, unrefined effort.
[11:56] Speaker 1: But this is why Philadelphia. This is what the Eagles do.
[11:59] Speaker 1: I talked about it today. They do things that bad
[12:01] Speaker 1: teams do. I mean they literally have to restrain the coach.
[12:05] Speaker 1: You know, they're firing a super Bowl winning coach. You
[12:09] Speaker 1: know they they spent money on a running back who
[12:12] Speaker 1: had a history, Saquon Barkley of injuries. They signed Carson Wentz,
[12:16] Speaker 1: they get rid of him. I mean, they do things
[12:18] Speaker 1: bad teams do, but they're so obsessed with winning, and
[12:21] Speaker 1: they're so willing to put it out there and take
[12:24] Speaker 1: big swings, and they draft so extraordinarily well they just
[12:27] Speaker 1: overcompensate for it. But again tonight, in a very emotional
[12:31] Speaker 1: Philadelphia team, here is the highest EQ in the league.
[12:36] Speaker 1: Jalen Hurts head down, Stoic Mature wraps it up in
[12:41] Speaker 1: the end, the final drive, the first down, the win,
[12:45] Speaker 1: and that's what that's what Hurts and the Eagles do.
