[0:01] Speaker 1: The volume.
[0:04] Speaker 2: This week's Crunch Time performer, brought to you by McDonald's
[0:07] Speaker 2: new Buffalo Ranch Sauce, is Josh Allen best football player
[0:10] Speaker 2: in the world, second time in his career. Three passing touchdowns,
[0:13] Speaker 2: three rushing touchdowns in one game. It's like that junior
[0:18] Speaker 2: high football player that's got a mustache and nobody else
[0:20] Speaker 2: does right. No other player has ever done it once.
[0:23] Speaker 2: So Josh's performance was satisfying, just like the first bite
[0:26] Speaker 2: of the bakon creamy Buffalo Ma Crispy Ah was good.
[0:39] Speaker 2: He's a regular host of the Josh Pates College Football Show.
[0:43] Speaker 2: Totally tied into college football West Coast to East. So
[0:47] Speaker 2: years ago, I worked in Portland, Oregon for a spell
[0:51] Speaker 2: and Mike Belotti was the coach, Jeff Tedford was the coordinator.
[0:55] Speaker 2: They finished number two in the nation. One year they
[0:58] Speaker 2: got lucky not having to face Miami. They faced Colorado
[1:01] Speaker 2: and they matched up really well with Colorado and not
[1:03] Speaker 2: with Miami at all. And I think Nebraska played Miami
[1:06] Speaker 2: and got you know, there was like ninety eight percent
[1:09] Speaker 2: fans of the Rose Bulller Nebraska, but Miami kicked the
[1:11] Speaker 2: you know what out of them. So Oregon has used
[1:15] Speaker 2: two things to become a power. One was Phil Knight's
[1:20] Speaker 2: creativity and money to build facilities. When there used to
[1:23] Speaker 2: be the facilities war, right, that would used to be
[1:26] Speaker 2: a big deal pre NIL, Like, there was about a
[1:28] Speaker 2: ten year period it was an arms race for facilities
[1:30] Speaker 2: and Oregon was the forefront. They've actually used three things ingenuity,
[1:36] Speaker 2: one hundred different uniforms to impress Southern col kids to
[1:40] Speaker 2: be the cool place. USC has one uniform, Penn State's
[1:43] Speaker 2: got one. Oregon had a thousand, So they used phil
[1:46] Speaker 2: Knight's ingenuity, then phil Knight's money with facilities, and then
[1:50] Speaker 2: third phil Knight's money with nil where they are the
[1:53] Speaker 2: big bidder on the West coast. Most of my life,
[1:59] Speaker 2: when I grew up in the Northwest, you would think
[2:01] Speaker 2: you were going to land the number three running back.
[2:04] Speaker 2: In southern California, USC would get number one, UCLA two,
[2:07] Speaker 2: you'd get three, and then at the last moment he
[2:10] Speaker 2: would decide to just go to USC and be a backup.
[2:13] Speaker 1: But that changed.
[2:14] Speaker 2: Oregon now mostly gets as good as players as anybody
[2:17] Speaker 2: in the West Coast. I think this is an awful.
[2:21] Speaker 1: Matchup for USC.
[2:23] Speaker 2: The teams that beat USC Northwestern actually ran the ball
[2:28] Speaker 2: to them. Iowa can run the ball at you Michigan
[2:34] Speaker 2: last year. I think Oregon's going to be hard to block.
[2:39] Speaker 2: I think Oregon USC's O line young. I think Oregon's
[2:42] Speaker 2: gonna run on them. I think Oregon's a big playoffense
[2:46] Speaker 2: in USC on the back end. At corners week, if
[2:51] Speaker 2: Oregon and there are a nine and a half point
[2:53] Speaker 2: favorite wins Josh thirty three twenty one wins by two touchdowns,
[3:01] Speaker 2: how do you think we view I know how we
[3:03] Speaker 2: view Oregon, that's been established, that's an elite program. How
[3:06] Speaker 2: are we going to view USC? Because I think it's
[3:08] Speaker 2: a terrible matchup the same way people have been viewing them.
[3:12] Speaker 2: I largely see your way.
[3:14] Speaker 1: The one thing I would say is, you know, coming
[3:17] Speaker 1: into last week, if you and I were to have
[3:19] Speaker 1: talked about Pitt Notre Dame, you know, you could have
[3:21] Speaker 1: held up a piece of paper and said, Pitt's got
[3:23] Speaker 1: the number three run defense in the country, and I
[3:25] Speaker 1: would have looked at you and said, Okay, Notre Dame's
[3:27] Speaker 1: going to run right through them. I don't really care
[3:29] Speaker 1: what paper says. It's lying to me a little bit.
[3:31] Speaker 1: So with this, like Oregon statistically top three pass defense
[3:35] Speaker 1: in the country. But I can tell you that staff
[3:37] Speaker 1: up there supremely respects that Indiana had a combo of
[3:41] Speaker 1: wide receivers come in there and work them a little bit.
[3:44] Speaker 1: USC's got the same combo receivers that could come in there.
[3:48] Speaker 1: And if USC were to win this game and we
[3:50] Speaker 1: look back, that's probably the reason why. But if that
[3:53] Speaker 1: doesn't happen, and if it goes Oregon's way, it's probably
[3:57] Speaker 1: just more the same. Colum this probably you were. You
[4:00] Speaker 1: were a head coach that left the Big twelve to
[4:02] Speaker 1: go to the Pac twelve that became the Big ten,
[4:05] Speaker 1: and you really were never going to be a fit
[4:07] Speaker 1: in the Big ten. They hurled these accusations at Lincoln
[4:10] Speaker 1: as to why he didn't take the LSU job, and
[4:13] Speaker 1: he was scared of this, scared of playing that kind
[4:15] Speaker 1: of ball. I don't even care if there's validity to it,
[4:17] Speaker 1: because you didn't ask me what valid is. You asked me,
[4:20] Speaker 1: what are people going to say? What are people going
[4:22] Speaker 1: to think? They're going to throw around the same accusations,
[4:24] Speaker 1: the same pejorative connotations, And the beauty of competitive sport
[4:30] Speaker 1: is you control that. But yet it is that way
[4:33] Speaker 1: until you change that. So I see the matchup the
[4:35] Speaker 1: same way you do. But that's cool because if we
[4:39] Speaker 1: both see it that way and then they go up
[4:41] Speaker 1: there and win stylistically more a rock fight kind of game,
[4:45] Speaker 1: then that's how you change narratives. That's the only way
[4:47] Speaker 1: you change narratives. Yeah, no, there is.
[4:50] Speaker 2: I mean I was joking with Lincoln off the air
[4:52] Speaker 2: the other day before we did our interview. I said, literally,
[4:56] Speaker 2: you are being led by a walk on running back
[5:00] Speaker 2: from Calabasas. And yes, he said, he said, only at
[5:05] Speaker 2: USC you find a kid in your backyard who's almost
[5:09] Speaker 2: as good as any running back you faced all year.
[5:12] Speaker 1: You know. There the.
[5:14] Speaker 2: Thing I always go back to, like Pete Carroll takes
[5:18] Speaker 2: over the Raiders and their defense is bad. That always
[5:20] Speaker 2: worries me, like you can't get your side of the
[5:22] Speaker 2: ball right. Lincoln's offenses have been money and the fact
[5:28] Speaker 2: that he's doing with a walk on running back, and
[5:30] Speaker 2: for some of the year, one receiver Lemon's been the
[5:33] Speaker 2: really good key receiver that's always been healthy. Deuce Robinson
[5:36] Speaker 2: left went to Florida State. You know, guys have transferred out.
[5:40] Speaker 2: It's kind of been a one receiver offense for a
[5:42] Speaker 2: lot of the seats. They don't have a supreme tight
[5:46] Speaker 2: end talent. Lake mccree's okay, three star kid. He's fine,
[5:49] Speaker 2: not a pro so, but it is. I will say
[5:53] Speaker 2: this USC's I'll give Jen Cohen the eighty credit. It's
[6:00] Speaker 2: a really distracted market and money gets splintered into movies
[6:04] Speaker 2: and second homes and tech companies and pro sports season
[6:10] Speaker 2: ticket It's hard to galvanize Los Angeles like the Dodgers do,
[6:15] Speaker 2: the Lakers do, and yet there's the Angels and the Clippers.
[6:19] Speaker 2: It it's just it's hard. It's hard to stay to yourself.
[6:23] Speaker 2: It's the biggest economy in the country and Baton Rouge isn't.
[6:27] Speaker 2: But everybody knows in Baton Rouge, if you have money,
[6:30] Speaker 2: if you have two nickels drub together, you're giving them
[6:32] Speaker 2: to LSU football. I think it's much harder than people think.
[6:35] Speaker 2: In Los Angeles, it's an incredibly distracted market. And more so,
[6:39] Speaker 2: remember when Pete Carroll was there, Josh, there was no
[6:42] Speaker 2: NFL in the city.
[6:43] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, there was just media either man. So like
[6:46] Speaker 1: it's the whole New World.
[6:47] Speaker 2: And the Dodgers weren't the best organization in North America.
[6:52] Speaker 2: Like Pete was there, and when Pete was there, if
[6:54] Speaker 2: you won your regular season games, yeah, there was no semifinal,
[6:58] Speaker 2: you won the Pac twelve, you went to the Roles.
[7:00] Speaker 1: So I don't know.
[7:01] Speaker 2: I think I said today, there's four or five programs
[7:04] Speaker 2: in the country that have an advantage for national championships. Georgia,
[7:10] Speaker 2: Ohio State, University of Florida, I don't love the governor,
[7:14] Speaker 2: but probably LSU. And I mean, and I said, I
[7:21] Speaker 2: would say Oregon, but there's no players in the state.
[7:23] Speaker 2: And then I think there's six of them Bama in
[7:26] Speaker 2: the new anil world. They don't have a lot of money,
[7:29] Speaker 2: and that changes things. They don't look like like Oregon
[7:32] Speaker 2: can go buy players from the state of Bama. Bama's
[7:35] Speaker 2: going to have a hard time getting them out of Oregon.
[7:36] Speaker 2: That for Oregan wants them. That wasn't the case four
[7:38] Speaker 2: years ago. So I mean, I I've said this to friends.
[7:43] Speaker 2: They don't want to hear it. I said, USC is
[7:45] Speaker 2: not Ohio State in this new world, and they're not Georgia,
[7:49] Speaker 2: and they're not Florida's. It's another thing. Josh costs three
[7:54] Speaker 2: million dollars minimum to my home and a nice neighborhood
[7:57] Speaker 2: with good schools. The assistant, the linebacker, coach is making
[8:01] Speaker 2: five fifty. You can't afford to buy a home. How
[8:05] Speaker 2: do you view USC as an elite?
[8:07] Speaker 1: Are you?
[8:07] Speaker 2: What is your Mount Rushmore for best jobs, money commitment,
[8:12] Speaker 2: state with players donors control their history.
[8:18] Speaker 1: Georgia has always been They've been to my number one
[8:22] Speaker 1: for a while. If you were to promise me alignment
[8:24] Speaker 1: at LSU, I put LSU right up there. Ohio State's
[8:28] Speaker 1: way up there for me. Ohio State. Whatever you think
[8:31] Speaker 1: about Ohio athletes, I mean, there's like a proud tradition
[8:34] Speaker 1: of high school athletes. Ohio State has zero problem going
[8:38] Speaker 1: into South Florida, I mean, zero problem whatsoever. So I
[8:41] Speaker 1: put Ohio State up there. You'd have to check, like
[8:45] Speaker 1: which period of time it is. But Texas conditionally is
[8:48] Speaker 1: up there.
[8:49] Speaker 2: Same.
[8:50] Speaker 1: But what's changed over the past, just like what's evolving
[8:55] Speaker 1: right now in front of us is Texas A and M.
[8:58] Speaker 1: Because Texas A and M has just been and it's
[9:00] Speaker 1: been like this stack of wood, but it's been wet historically,
[9:04] Speaker 1: meaning they well post Johnny manziel A and M is
[9:07] Speaker 1: a totally different world. If you went on that campus
[9:10] Speaker 1: pre Manzel and then you went back. Now you don't
[9:12] Speaker 1: even recognize it. So they they leveraged one play. They
[9:16] Speaker 1: leveraged Manziel better than Auburn leveraged Cam Newton, like they
[9:19] Speaker 1: leveraged him so hard, so effectively. So I'd say them
[9:22] Speaker 1: as well, but with USC. So to go back to
[9:25] Speaker 1: what you were talking about for a second, I remember
[9:28] Speaker 1: I was way younger. I was like in school when
[9:31] Speaker 1: the Pete Carroll era happens out there, and we were
[9:33] Speaker 1: enamored with them. We hated them in the South, but
[9:36] Speaker 1: like we were enamored with them. You remember that trip
[9:38] Speaker 1: they made to Auburn and they shut Auburn out to
[9:41] Speaker 1: start a season. The entire South, even people who hated
[9:45] Speaker 1: Auburn in the South, they like waited for that date.
[9:47] Speaker 1: They circled that date because it was going to be
[9:49] Speaker 1: like a culture clash and the South's culture was going
[9:53] Speaker 1: to rise. You can't come into Southern eat and do that.
[9:56] Speaker 1: And then of course they did. But I remember thinking
[9:59] Speaker 1: back then that I always it never made sense to
[10:02] Speaker 1: me as a kid growing up in the South, immersed
[10:05] Speaker 1: in college football and that being the culture. When people
[10:07] Speaker 1: would say what you just said about LA I had
[10:10] Speaker 1: never left the South. So to me, I just assumed
[10:13] Speaker 1: that all the big time college football programs and the
[10:15] Speaker 1: towns slash cities they were in were like Athens, Georgia, Auburn, Alabama, Tuscaloose, Alabama, Knoxville, Tennessee.
[10:21] Speaker 1: That's just the way I thought it worked. And I
[10:23] Speaker 1: thought when people said, boy, there's a lot to distract
[10:26] Speaker 1: you out there, there's a lot more going on in LA,
[10:28] Speaker 1: I thought it was excuse making. So you know, since then,
[10:32] Speaker 1: I've been able to travel, I've been able to go
[10:34] Speaker 1: out there, and it just it slaps you in the
[10:36] Speaker 1: face when you go out there. If I feel the
[10:38] Speaker 1: same about Miami to a certain extent when I go
[10:41] Speaker 1: to Miami, when I go to LA. If you just
[10:43] Speaker 1: drive around for a day, be in town for seventy
[10:46] Speaker 1: two or ninety six hours, and ask yourself, does this
[10:50] Speaker 1: feel different? It feels way different. And you just asked, like,
[10:54] Speaker 1: how much more difficult must it be to capture this
[10:57] Speaker 1: place's imagination? Therefore, to capture the wallet, to capture the
[11:01] Speaker 1: emotional and financial investment, then it must be in Baton
[11:05] Speaker 1: Rouge or in college station. And that's that's the challenge. Now,
[11:09] Speaker 1: the trade off is if you've got it, you've got it.
[11:12] Speaker 1: But if you don't have it, they're not going to
[11:14] Speaker 1: help you get it. So you got to go in
[11:15] Speaker 1: there and you got to do it on your own.
[11:17] Speaker 1: Whoever is about to take the Florida Gator job, they'll
[11:20] Speaker 1: have the full weight and oh yeah, support of that community.
[11:23] Speaker 1: Lincoln took the LA job, and it's like, this is great,
[11:27] Speaker 1: we'll check back in a little while. If he's winning,
[11:29] Speaker 1: we may show up and if they're really winning, we
[11:31] Speaker 1: may even give a dollar or two.
[11:33] Speaker 2: I'll give you an example. They went looking for an
[11:36] Speaker 2: athletic director. They contacted me and said, Colin Rick Crusoe said, hey,
[11:39] Speaker 2: give me a list of about five people.
[11:41] Speaker 1: I did.
[11:41] Speaker 2: I gave the athletic director at Northwestern Auburn, Florida, the
[11:47] Speaker 2: guy at Texas. Those people weren't interested. Yeah, they're like, yeah,
[11:52] Speaker 2: it's takes about eight million dollars to buy the home
[11:56] Speaker 2: that I want to buy, seven or eight. It's like
[11:59] Speaker 2: it cush at nine hundred thousand in Tuscaloosa. Like people
[12:02] Speaker 2: don't understand it. Ucla, if you went to the big
[12:06] Speaker 2: ten nil right now, I bet you Ucla is below Rutgers.
[12:10] Speaker 1: Yes, they are yeah people.
[12:13] Speaker 2: And by the way, UCLA is in bell Air. It's
[12:17] Speaker 2: the richest college campus in America, bell Air next to
[12:22] Speaker 2: Beverly Hills. They have the lowest nil because it's a
[12:25] Speaker 2: basketball school, it's an international university, it's an intellectual hub,
[12:29] Speaker 2: eighteen languages on campus. Football is not that big of
[12:32] Speaker 2: a deal. You got to drive to the rose ball,
[12:34] Speaker 2: it doesn't matter.
[12:35] Speaker 1: It's in. This is what I've tried to explain to
[12:37] Speaker 1: someone in my social circle the other day. They were like,
[12:40] Speaker 1: all that money around UCLA, why is it a struggle?
[12:44] Speaker 1: Like why did they struggle to tap into it? Wouldn't
[12:46] Speaker 1: the right athletic director be able to do this? And
[12:48] Speaker 1: I said, I guess there is this magic formula where
[12:52] Speaker 1: you could tap into it, but you're never really tapping
[12:54] Speaker 1: into that. Because I'm not faulting these people, I'm just explaining,
[12:58] Speaker 1: as a matter of fact, those people's way of life,
[13:01] Speaker 1: the way they acquired their means, the way they their
[13:04] Speaker 1: mind works, the way they were it would be an insult.
[13:07] Speaker 1: It would be beneath them to allocate their personal financial
[13:12] Speaker 1: towards something like football. They just view it as bet them.
[13:16] Speaker 1: That's that's exactly right.
[13:17] Speaker 2: They would view, they would view it as beneath them,
[13:20] Speaker 2: and so I guess my whole point is the world's
[13:25] Speaker 2: changed with nil and transfer portal. But it's also changed
[13:28] Speaker 2: when the NFL came to Los Angeles and the Dodgers
[13:32] Speaker 2: became the richest franchise in the history of Major League Baseball.
[13:35] Speaker 2: People are distracted. Tickets cost more, it's hard to commit
[13:39] Speaker 2: to Saturday and Sunday. The minute USC loses a game
[13:43] Speaker 2: they should win, you know, twelve thousand people disappear. So
[13:47] Speaker 2: I try to explain that to people and they say, oh,
[13:48] Speaker 2: it's an excuse, and it's like, no, it's I've lived
[13:51] Speaker 2: in LA there's just so much those thirty seven music venues,
[13:56] Speaker 2: eight pro teams, Like, sorry, guys, it's it's not an excuse.
[14:00] Speaker 2: It's like you go on a two game losing street,
[14:01] Speaker 2: the whole town and moves off you. So it's interesting
[14:07] Speaker 2: the Lane Kiffen story. We all know Jimmy Sexton controls
[14:10] Speaker 2: college football coaches. Jimmy Trace, Armstrong, Jimmy Sexton, they control it.
[14:16] Speaker 2: So Sark snapped at people today when they asked him
[14:18] Speaker 2: about the job rumors. He's like, I'm not going anywhere,
[14:23] Speaker 2: nor would you. I mean's to me, Texas has always
[14:26] Speaker 2: been arguably the best college football job, top ten fifteen
[14:29] Speaker 2: job in America sports, Like you know, Yankee manager, you
[14:33] Speaker 2: know it's up the Philadelphia Eagle coach. Whatever. What if
[14:43] Speaker 2: Texas hammers Texas A and M. They can go and
[14:47] Speaker 2: say this over three and two against top ten teams
[14:50] Speaker 2: went to Columbus. Only team that's been competitive against them
[14:55] Speaker 2: is US hammered Texas A and M. Hey, we don't
[14:59] Speaker 2: match up with Joe. We could be on three times
[15:01] Speaker 2: in a row. They've slapped us around. What if they
[15:05] Speaker 2: bought Texas A and M. What are we to do
[15:07] Speaker 2: with a logmorns. I was wondering that yesterday. I thought
[15:11] Speaker 2: they weren't going to drop them as low as they did.
[15:12] Speaker 1: The AP dropped Texas to seventeen, and I thought, surely
[15:17] Speaker 1: the committee will have them thirteen, fourteen, fifteen, something like that. Yeah. Same,
[15:21] Speaker 1: They dropped them to seventeen. And you know, they did
[15:23] Speaker 1: that to Miami a couple of weeks ago, and then
[15:25] Speaker 1: almost it felt like they course corrected in the following weeks.
[15:29] Speaker 1: I think with ANM, or I think with Texas rather
[15:31] Speaker 1: if they go in there and do that to Texas
[15:33] Speaker 1: A and M. But it would be a strong talking
[15:36] Speaker 1: point going into that Sunday. You'd have to see how
[15:39] Speaker 1: the rest of the country played out, but yeah, they
[15:41] Speaker 1: would have an argument. To be honest with you, there
[15:43] Speaker 1: are a couple of arguments SEC schools could be making
[15:48] Speaker 1: right now about anything from strength of schedule to you know,
[15:52] Speaker 1: scheduling up out of conference, which is admirable. I mean,
[15:54] Speaker 1: that's what everybody should do. But there's gonna be a
[15:57] Speaker 1: lot of anecdotal debates and arguments right now if your
[16:00] Speaker 1: three lost Texas in that scenario gets left out, or
[16:03] Speaker 1: like you got Alabama dropping down behind Notre Dame last night,
[16:07] Speaker 1: which confused a lot of people, and they're going to
[16:10] Speaker 1: look at it and they're going to say, we're really
[16:12] Speaker 1: about to add a ninth conference game. Why would we
[16:15] Speaker 1: do that to ourselves? Why would we put that on ourselves?
[16:19] Speaker 1: The simple math there. If you've got, what do they have,
[16:21] Speaker 1: sixteen teams, you're adding eight more losses across your conference
[16:25] Speaker 1: slate that you are voluntarily adding. But you're doing it
[16:28] Speaker 1: because you want to increase revenue. You want to play
[16:30] Speaker 1: the toughest schedules in the country. You want to have
[16:33] Speaker 1: a great TV product, and they're going to succeed in
[16:35] Speaker 1: all that. But if the committee kind of short changed
[16:38] Speaker 1: you on their logic and short changed you on their criteria,
[16:41] Speaker 1: and they really weren't as serious as you thought they
[16:43] Speaker 1: were about rewarding scheduling, which is going to be reflected
[16:47] Speaker 1: in these next two weeks rankings, then maybe a little
[16:50] Speaker 1: catch twenty two and the one you mentioned Texas, but
[16:53] Speaker 1: like the one I'm dovetailing off of with that is, yeah,
[16:56] Speaker 1: what if Texas is in if they win, or what
[16:58] Speaker 1: if they're not in if they win? But I'm also
[17:00] Speaker 1: looking at the SEC Championship game because there's this weird
[17:03] Speaker 1: scenario that started to get floated. You and I are
[17:06] Speaker 1: recording the night after the rankings got released, where Bama's
[17:10] Speaker 1: at ten. Yeah, but they still control their own destiny
[17:13] Speaker 1: and whatnot. So they beat Auburn. If they do, they
[17:16] Speaker 1: go to Atlanta and they win the SEC Championship. I
[17:20] Speaker 1: had assumed it was a foregone conclusion. The SEC Champ's
[17:23] Speaker 1: going to have a first round by they're certainly going
[17:25] Speaker 1: to get one of those top four spots. Now, I
[17:27] Speaker 1: assumed that was like ninety nine to one logic. It
[17:30] Speaker 1: feels like about seventy thirty still on the side that
[17:33] Speaker 1: we're agreeing there with. But it feels like there's this
[17:36] Speaker 1: sentiment out there that, no, you can't jump them up
[17:38] Speaker 1: all the way to the top four just because they
[17:40] Speaker 1: won their conference, And I'm like, no, you can't afford
[17:42] Speaker 1: not to because I was just in Athens, Georgia last week.
[17:45] Speaker 1: Those people have little interest in playing in the SEC
[17:48] Speaker 1: championship game. They're totally happy where they are. They're totally
[17:51] Speaker 1: happy with a five or six. They feel the same
[17:52] Speaker 1: way at all miss. They're totally happy not going. So
[17:55] Speaker 1: you've already got people openly questioning what's the value in
[17:59] Speaker 1: playing for the comment ference title. If your champion does
[18:03] Speaker 1: not secure a first round by you have essentially invalidated
[18:07] Speaker 1: the entire existence of conference championships within this overall playoff framework.
[18:11] Speaker 1: So there are a couple of them in the SEC.
[18:13] Speaker 1: I'm watching right now, all right.

[19:36] Speaker 2: You know I talked today. I was talking to Joel
[19:41] Speaker 2: Clatt about this. I said, the best defenses I've ever
[19:46] Speaker 2: seen in college football. The Huskies with Steve Etman in
[19:49] Speaker 2: the early nineties just bulldozed people. They brought in the
[19:53] Speaker 2: four to six and nobody knew how they brought it
[19:55] Speaker 2: from the Bears, and the whole college football for a
[19:58] Speaker 2: year did not know how to attack Washington. I mean
[20:01] Speaker 2: they literally every game just it was over in the box.
[20:03] Speaker 2: You couldn't get downfield, and they had NFL safeties and corners.
[20:07] Speaker 2: So for about a year. Then there's the USC defense
[20:10] Speaker 2: was really good with Pete Carroll where Clay Matthews didn't
[20:13] Speaker 2: start at linebacker, and then it was NF NFC Rookie
[20:16] Speaker 2: of the Year defensively it couldn't start for USC. Then
[20:20] Speaker 2: there was there were a couple of I always loved.
[20:23] Speaker 1: There was at.
[20:23] Speaker 2: The Rolando McLain, the linebacker for Bama.
[20:27] Speaker 1: It was the one that beat Texas.
[20:29] Speaker 2: I was like, man, they they hit different. There were
[20:31] Speaker 2: a couple of Saban defenses that were and there was
[20:34] Speaker 2: a Georgia defense, a couple with the Jalen Carter.
[20:36] Speaker 1: So there's been about four.
[20:37] Speaker 2: Or five that I've watched and gone, oh, that doesn't
[20:40] Speaker 2: look like that's somewhere between Saturday and Sunday football. It's
[20:43] Speaker 2: not Sunday, but it's close. Ohio State has an advantage
[20:47] Speaker 2: none of those had. It used to be, even Nick Saban,
[20:52] Speaker 2: you'd have a hole in your defense and you'd go
[20:53] Speaker 2: to junior college and he was never quite as good
[20:56] Speaker 2: as the ranking. You have the number two corner in
[20:59] Speaker 2: junior college and you're like, probably their best corner. But
[21:01] Speaker 2: he solves a dilemma. Well, now you just go buy
[21:04] Speaker 2: the best corner. If you're Ohio State and you're like,
[21:07] Speaker 2: we need to be better at corner, we're just going
[21:09] Speaker 2: to go buy the number one guy who're already in
[21:12] Speaker 2: the sport and crushing. And I look at this Ohio
[21:14] Speaker 2: State defense and again I want to see him play
[21:17] Speaker 2: out and.
[21:17] Speaker 1: Who they play Josh.
[21:20] Speaker 2: The windows to complete passes are Sunday windows, like they're
[21:24] Speaker 2: when even when Knicks teams were great, you'd have a
[21:27] Speaker 2: corner like d Milner, who wasn't really a great corner,
[21:31] Speaker 2: he was great with a Nick's system. They got two
[21:34] Speaker 2: players that could go top five. They have another two
[21:36] Speaker 2: that could go fifteen. Between the fifteenth pick and the
[21:41] Speaker 2: third and the second round, what do you make of
[21:46] Speaker 2: just forget Ohio State, just what you've seen from their defense.
[21:51] Speaker 1: It really boggles your mind a little bit because of
[21:54] Speaker 1: what conventional wisdom would have told you. Conventional wisdom, like
[21:57] Speaker 1: we all watched twenty twenty for Ohio State in that
[22:01] Speaker 1: stretch of time, and you know in the back of
[22:04] Speaker 1: your mind or you think you know they're making this
[22:07] Speaker 1: run because of all this senior veteran talent, Like they're
[22:10] Speaker 1: going to lose all these guys. Their entire defensive front's
[22:13] Speaker 1: going to be gone, and we didn't even know Jim
[22:16] Speaker 1: Knowles was going to be gone. But they also lose
[22:18] Speaker 1: the coordinator. And so like, just say that out loud,
[22:22] Speaker 1: you had had anybody, I don't care who it is,
[22:24] Speaker 1: Ohio State or anyone else. They are powered by their
[22:27] Speaker 1: defensive front. Entire defensive fronts wiped out and coordinator's gone
[22:31] Speaker 1: as well. Not to mention you're just coming off a
[22:33] Speaker 1: national championship. So there's that natural propensity to get a
[22:36] Speaker 1: little complacent, maybe come back to earth a little bit.
[22:38] Speaker 1: Everyone's gunning for you the next year. The bet I
[22:41] Speaker 1: don't know if the team overall is better, the defense
[22:43] Speaker 1: looks better, I don't know how that even happens. Matt
[22:47] Speaker 1: Patricia came in and here's one of the early warning signs.
[22:50] Speaker 1: I remember when Ryan Day got elevated there, and I remember,
[22:54] Speaker 1: you know, Ohio State is Ohio State, so they could
[22:57] Speaker 1: do a national search if they want to. They can
[22:58] Speaker 1: go land most any head coach they want. And they said, no,
[23:02] Speaker 1: the guy we need is already here. And I remember
[23:05] Speaker 1: some people looked at it and said, that's crazy. They're
[23:08] Speaker 1: cheating themselves by not doing this. Not do it. And
[23:11] Speaker 1: I looked at it and I said, they're not stupid.
[23:13] Speaker 1: They know what they have in the building. Just because
[23:15] Speaker 1: you don't know who Ryan Day is doesn't mean they don't. Well,
[23:17] Speaker 1: it's the same way when Ryan Day needed to fill
[23:21] Speaker 1: that defensive coordinator role. There are guys who would leave
[23:24] Speaker 1: really good jobs to be the DC at Ohio State.
[23:28] Speaker 1: And he went and got Matt Patricia. That's not a
[23:29] Speaker 1: name that would have been on anyone's radar. You take
[23:32] Speaker 1: the biggest industry insider, give me your top ten. Matt
[23:35] Speaker 1: Patricia's not on it, and Ryan goes and hires him.
[23:39] Speaker 1: And you see why like hiring. I mean, it comes
[23:42] Speaker 1: down the players making plays. But if you can staff
[23:45] Speaker 1: properly in college football and you have top fifteen talent,
[23:48] Speaker 1: let alone what they have, you're going to be really
[23:51] Speaker 1: hard to beat. Now that doesn't make him invincible, but
[23:53] Speaker 1: what you're talking about is there's going to have to
[23:56] Speaker 1: be a team if Ohio State gets eliminated that puts
[23:58] Speaker 1: together such an air tight like tight rope walk performance, precision, poise, accuracy,
[24:05] Speaker 1: no turnovers. That's what it's gonna take. That's what it
[24:08] Speaker 1: used to take to beat those Saban teams. It took
[24:10] Speaker 1: some insane performance. Somebody just plays out of his mind,
[24:13] Speaker 1: and if that happens, you tip your cat to the
[24:15] Speaker 1: other side. Short of that happening, Ohio State's gonna win
[24:18] Speaker 1: the national championship.
[24:20] Speaker 2: Well, the other thing is the way to beat Saban
[24:22] Speaker 2: was Manzell or cam It was generally somebody that could
[24:26] Speaker 2: go off script that Nick couldn't prepare for. He just
[24:29] Speaker 2: there'd nothing you could do. I Nick knew you were
[24:33] Speaker 2: in the pocket. You could go back and look at this.
[24:35] Speaker 2: I'm not sure he lost three times if he knew
[24:37] Speaker 2: we're going to be That's why I think Ohio State
[24:40] Speaker 2: beats Indiana because you know where Mendoz is gonna be.
[24:42] Speaker 2: The way to beat Ohio State or a great defense
[24:45] Speaker 2: is oh shit, Josh Allen. I mean, never forget what
[24:48] Speaker 2: Josh Allen did to Belichick when Belichick was in New England.
[24:51] Speaker 1: Bill couldn't do anything.
[24:52] Speaker 2: So the only quarterback that Bill's ever faced, even Peyton Manning,
[24:55] Speaker 2: he gave some trouble to He could do nothing with
[24:58] Speaker 2: Josh Allen because Josh actually when he was young, about
[25:01] Speaker 2: sixty percent of his game was off script. That was Manzel,
[25:04] Speaker 2: that was Camp. Those are the kind of guys that
[25:11] Speaker 2: just off script guys gave Saban trouble. And Mendoza is
[25:18] Speaker 2: a classic big arm pocket guy. And the other thing
[25:23] Speaker 2: is you could beat Nick if you got to lead
[25:25] Speaker 2: in the second half and his defense had to cheat
[25:28] Speaker 2: a little or guess right, like if if they could
[25:32] Speaker 2: dictate terms, Saban squeezed.
[25:35] Speaker 1: You out like a towel.
[25:36] Speaker 2: But if you made Nick trailed, Nick now was taking
[25:40] Speaker 2: some risk defensively, I've got to get the ball back.
[25:43] Speaker 2: We've got to generate pressure with extra people. I think
[25:46] Speaker 2: if Ohio State leads in the second half, you're in
[25:49] Speaker 2: big trouble if you have to throw against that. I
[25:51] Speaker 2: think you can the way to beat great defensive teams
[25:53] Speaker 2: in college off script and you force them to take
[25:57] Speaker 2: risks they normally wouldn't take because you lead.
[26:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think another thing that happened, like with Deshaun
[26:03] Speaker 1: Watson Clemson teams when they played another one. Yeah, it's
[26:08] Speaker 1: just that was that the I'm not saying it's the
[26:10] Speaker 1: first time you ever saw anyone run tempo, but it
[26:13] Speaker 1: was still that early period. Like Malzon comes into this
[26:16] Speaker 1: to the picture and like, guys are running tempo as
[26:19] Speaker 1: the foundational aspect of their offense for the first time.
[26:22] Speaker 1: So the game, like the rules hadn't shortened the game
[26:25] Speaker 1: yet either with the clock rules. Clemson ran over one
[26:27] Speaker 1: hundred offensive plays in one of those National Pantheonship games.
[26:31] Speaker 1: So I'd rarely seen Bama defense on the field. Trevor Lawrence. Yes, yeah, so.
[26:37] Speaker 2: Ran down the sideline against Alabama. I think it was
[26:39] Speaker 2: Alabama ran down the side again, Trevor and DeShawn It
[26:43] Speaker 2: was off script plays that beat Bama, not just the
[26:46] Speaker 2: pocket stuff.
[26:47] Speaker 1: That's why like that, Just you don't run that many
[26:50] Speaker 1: plays anymore. So that's another thing that's taken out of
[26:53] Speaker 1: the toolbox. See what you're saying is why I'm really
[26:56] Speaker 1: interested how Marcel Reed would play against them. Marcell, we're
[27:00] Speaker 1: coming off the worst half of football we'll ever see
[27:02] Speaker 1: him play in his life, follow him by one of
[27:05] Speaker 1: the best. So it's a little weird timing. But you know,
[27:09] Speaker 1: when you talk about matchups, people always misunderstand you intentionally.
[27:12] Speaker 1: There was, oh, you think A and M is better
[27:13] Speaker 1: than Ohio State? No one said that, dude. What I
[27:16] Speaker 1: did say is, out of all the matchups they could
[27:18] Speaker 1: draw in the postseason, yeah, that's the one that would
[27:21] Speaker 1: get my attention the most because that's the one that
[27:23] Speaker 1: would probably keep them up the night at night the longest.
[27:26] Speaker 2: Yeah, No, I really feel like that. That's interesting you
[27:29] Speaker 2: bring that up. Deshaun Watson, Trevor Lawrence, Johnny Manziel. Guys,
[27:33] Speaker 2: off script, they get a lead, Bama's got to create
[27:36] Speaker 2: a turnover.
[27:37] Speaker 1: They take a big risk.
[27:39] Speaker 2: I think the Ohio State's kind of that level, you know,
[27:42] Speaker 2: I I said this. I have been very much a
[27:47] Speaker 2: proponent of the college Football Playoff and il on the
[27:50] Speaker 2: transfer portal, and I'm a Packed twelve guy. But I
[27:53] Speaker 2: told friends three years before it disbanded, I said, the
[27:55] Speaker 2: conference is in big trouble. There's no money here. The
[27:58] Speaker 2: USC's getting thirty million a year. I said, they can
[28:01] Speaker 2: make that going independent and pick their schedule and have
[28:04] Speaker 2: a better TV deal. At one point, Fox Sports, I
[28:08] Speaker 2: think went to USC and asked about buying all their
[28:10] Speaker 2: home games, buying a TV package. So, and I don't
[28:14] Speaker 2: want to speak above my pay grade, but I do
[28:17] Speaker 2: remember hearing a little bit of that in the building.
[28:20] Speaker 2: USC was grumbling for years about splitting revenue with CAL
[28:24] Speaker 2: and Washington State. I just didn't like it. So but
[28:29] Speaker 2: I think we both agree. I'll give you an example
[28:32] Speaker 2: of why Texas Oklahoma to the SEC and the four
[28:36] Speaker 2: PAC twelve schools to the Big Ten is great. I've
[28:39] Speaker 2: watched back to back Iowa games that were thrilling, that
[28:44] Speaker 2: were thrilling, Iowa Oregon thrilling game. I love seeing big
[28:51] Speaker 2: traditional schools never play each other, and this is the
[28:53] Speaker 2: one I remember. And then Iowa goes to LA in
[28:56] Speaker 2: another sloppy Weather game and plays USC and I'm like,
[29:00] Speaker 2: I have not watched back to back Iowa games start
[29:03] Speaker 2: to finish ever, maybe ever, ever ever in my life,
[29:07] Speaker 2: start to finish back to back Iowa games. I don't,
[29:11] Speaker 2: and I know I'm not alone on that. I saw
[29:12] Speaker 2: the ratings for both. So anybody that pushes back on this,
[29:17] Speaker 2: the convergence of the sec in Texas, Oklahoma, Oklahoma, Alabama,
[29:24] Speaker 2: you can't turn it off.
[29:25] Speaker 1: No, it's fantastic.
[29:28] Speaker 2: Otherwise you get Oklahoma and Texas Tech.
[29:30] Speaker 1: I don't give a shit, right they. I mean you,
[29:33] Speaker 1: you were sitting there looking at a situation Saturday where
[29:36] Speaker 1: you've got oh you Bama, Texas Georgia sandwiched on top
[29:40] Speaker 1: of each other. Both of them popped to ten plus rating,
[29:43] Speaker 1: and it's just like you're, you're you want to look
[29:46] Speaker 1: at it, and you want to say, I told you
[29:48] Speaker 1: this last week because I was going to the Texas
[29:50] Speaker 1: Georgia game. I said, can you believe we get this
[29:52] Speaker 1: in the regular season? Just look at the helmets on
[29:55] Speaker 1: the field. At the same time, you don't have to
[29:56] Speaker 1: know a player's name, it's written. The spectacle of that
[29:59] Speaker 1: is amazing, And I think here's what people struggle with. So,
[30:03] Speaker 1: you know, we were talking about plaoff rankings a second ago,
[30:06] Speaker 1: and you're talking about the PAC twelve dissolving as a conference,
[30:09] Speaker 1: and like there's some romanticism in it, Like there's a
[30:12] Speaker 1: part of you that hates to see it happen. It's
[30:14] Speaker 1: like your childhood being ripped away. There's another part of
[30:16] Speaker 1: you that understands the business side of it, and you
[30:19] Speaker 1: understand this is the way the college football world's going,
[30:22] Speaker 1: it's the way that the athletic world's going, the sporting
[30:24] Speaker 1: world's going. True, So there is still something we try
[30:28] Speaker 1: and cling to in the playoff model. All the conference
[30:32] Speaker 1: champs are going to be in there, so you're going
[30:34] Speaker 1: to have representation at the table. At least you're gonna
[30:37] Speaker 1: have a G five team in there. And I'm always
[30:40] Speaker 1: conflicted on this because I know it's not an accident
[30:42] Speaker 1: that ten plus million people are watching the games they're watching.
[30:45] Speaker 1: They're watching it because that's where the best football is largely.
[30:49] Speaker 1: And yet we've also got this construct where we are
[30:52] Speaker 1: headed towards a mess. On selection Sunday, there's going to
[30:55] Speaker 1: be this glut of two loss teams and we're gonna
[30:58] Speaker 1: have to maybe make room for a second Big twelve
[31:01] Speaker 1: team if Brigham Young's inside that bubble on the Saturday
[31:05] Speaker 1: before and they lose against Texas Tech, and you got
[31:08] Speaker 1: that unwritten rule where you can't drop someone out of
[31:10] Speaker 1: the bubble for losing the conference title game, and you're
[31:13] Speaker 1: just gonna have You're gonna have Oklahoma knocking on the door.
[31:15] Speaker 1: You're gonna have organ or usc maybe knocking on the door.
[31:17] Speaker 1: You can have Miami knocking on the door. So there's
[31:21] Speaker 1: that constant back and forth of we just want the
[31:23] Speaker 1: best TV product for the playoff versus no, we want fair,
[31:27] Speaker 1: maybe even somewhat equitable rules for the playoff. And I'm
[31:30] Speaker 1: always torn because I could make either argument. I could
[31:32] Speaker 1: debate myself on a stage because I can make both
[31:35] Speaker 1: sets of points so seamlessly. But I think we're very
[31:38] Speaker 1: much in a transition period on that front right now,
[31:41] Speaker 1: of we're in an era right now where yeah, we're
[31:43] Speaker 1: gonna have a G five team that's a three touchdown
[31:45] Speaker 1: dog in the first round and we're all just supposed
[31:48] Speaker 1: to pretend one hundred and thirty six teams are playing
[31:51] Speaker 1: the same sport. Therefore, we have to have representation, and
[31:54] Speaker 1: everyone knows it's not real, but we're kind of winking
[31:57] Speaker 1: and nodding. You know, we got to be fair. I
[32:00] Speaker 1: wonder how long that lasts.
[32:02] Speaker 2: Yeah, I will say of all the teams that joined
[32:07] Speaker 2: the conferences, so Oregon, UCLA, Washington, sc Texas, Oklahoma, you
[32:15] Speaker 2: could not have convinced me that Oklahoma. I thought Oregon
[32:21] Speaker 2: would do well. My take was they playing crappy weather already.
[32:25] Speaker 2: They'll be fine, and they're gonna be able to buy
[32:27] Speaker 2: the player. Oregon's gonna be fine. Uscu CLA warmed cold
[32:31] Speaker 2: weather and it's a little finesse. Washington, I knew you
[32:34] Speaker 2: didn't have a ton of nil money. I thought Texas
[32:36] Speaker 2: would be fine. And if you really look at Texas
[32:38] Speaker 2: since they joined the SEC, take out the Georgia games.
[32:40] Speaker 2: They're doing just great. It's just Georgia. I am shocked
[32:44] Speaker 2: at how good Oklahoma's doing. One I didn't know if
[32:46] Speaker 2: Vnables was a head coach. Two, the state doesn't produce
[32:50] Speaker 2: a lot of players. Three Lincoln Riley left. It's become
[32:54] Speaker 2: an offensive sport. I look up at Oklahoma and I'm like,
[32:57] Speaker 2: I've watched them play Bama back to back years. They've
[33:00] Speaker 2: disassembled them. I'm sorry, Alabama's just mistake prone. Of all
[33:06] Speaker 2: the teams that join conferences, my bad, Oklahoma looks and
[33:11] Speaker 2: plays Josh like an SEC team if you didn't know
[33:15] Speaker 2: where they play. Texas still feels pretty, Texas still doesn't
[33:19] Speaker 2: like to get punched in the mouth. Oklahoma to me
[33:22] Speaker 2: feels like LSU. Georgia feels like an SEC team. Like
[33:26] Speaker 2: if you didn't know, you'd think they've been there for
[33:28] Speaker 2: twenty years.
[33:29] Speaker 1: I think where their position benefits them. A lot of
[33:31] Speaker 1: people look at where their position geographically and they thought
[33:34] Speaker 1: it was going to be a hindrance. If the moves
[33:37] Speaker 1: would have been made fifteen years ago, it would have
[33:40] Speaker 1: been a hindrance to them because they would have been
[33:42] Speaker 1: cut off from a lot of the talent. The world
[33:44] Speaker 1: had shrunk so much. For an eighteen year old, the
[33:47] Speaker 1: state lines don't matter if you're gaming every night with
[33:53] Speaker 1: a headset on and you're talking to someone in Virginia
[33:55] Speaker 1: and Washington State and southern California. The world is so
[33:58] Speaker 1: small it means to go from Charlotte, North Carolina to
[34:02] Speaker 1: play football in Norman, Oklahoma. Now half their NIL packages
[34:06] Speaker 1: involve private aviation for family to come watch and play,
[34:09] Speaker 1: so it's so much easier to go into Houston, or
[34:12] Speaker 1: go into Orlando, or go into Charlotte or Atlanta and
[34:15] Speaker 1: get talent out there. The one thing they had to
[34:17] Speaker 1: do is they had to nail the coaching higher. And yeah, look,
[34:19] Speaker 1: I'm not even ready to say that Brenton Vnables is
[34:22] Speaker 1: just a total nail of a hire, but he's been
[34:24] Speaker 1: very good. And the one compliment you've got to give
[34:27] Speaker 1: him is that team reflects his attitude. So the identity
[34:31] Speaker 1: of the team reflects that of Brent Vinnables, and you
[34:33] Speaker 1: can't say that about every team out there. So in retrospect,
[34:36] Speaker 1: two things happen. Okay, the SEC brought him in at
[34:39] Speaker 1: the very time when the talent acquisition game was totally transforming,
[34:44] Speaker 1: so some barriers fell down for him right there that
[34:46] Speaker 1: they didn't really control. And then number two Lincoln left
[34:50] Speaker 1: at the right time. We just didn't know it. But
[34:52] Speaker 1: his style of ball was not gonna fit nearly as
[34:55] Speaker 1: well as the style they're playing right now. Look, they've
[34:59] Speaker 1: had a quarterback hurt this year, or else they may
[35:01] Speaker 1: be making more noise than they currently are.
[35:04] Speaker 2: Yeah, no, I just I missed on Oklahoma. They when
[35:07] Speaker 2: I watched Oklahoma SEC games. That's just an old school
[35:11] Speaker 2: SEC game, physical linebackers, standing guys up, and SEC teams
[35:18] Speaker 2: increasingly always have a Sunday quarterback or he looks like
[35:21] Speaker 2: one in college. Like I don't know if Trinidad Chamblis
[35:23] Speaker 2: is going to play in the pros. It looks like
[35:25] Speaker 2: dak to me. But it looks like that's a competent.
[35:28] Speaker 2: That's a that's a Sunday athlete. Josh, you're selling me
[35:32] Speaker 2: on this. Your your latest quick trip experience.
[35:36] Speaker 1: Went down to Athens, Georgia. So the drive if you
[35:39] Speaker 1: go Nashville to Athens is going to take you past
[35:41] Speaker 1: several quick trips. So I like to drive at night.
[35:44] Speaker 1: I don't know how you travel when you do it,
[35:45] Speaker 1: but I like to travel at night. If I'm going
[35:48] Speaker 1: to drive and there is I can, I can consume
[35:51] Speaker 1: caffeine now and go to sleep. So I'm totally immunized
[35:53] Speaker 1: from it, but it does help what I'm driving. So
[35:56] Speaker 1: I am the psychopath who I'm going to stop there
[35:58] Speaker 1: for gas? Yes, I'm gonna go in there though, And
[36:00] Speaker 1: that quick trip like cole brew on tap, that entire station, Yeah,
[36:04] Speaker 1: that is a lifesaver. Maybe literally a lifesaver for me
[36:08] Speaker 1: with how late at night I drive. So it's been
[36:10] Speaker 1: good man, It's it's been a real good partnership too.
