[0:11] Speaker 1: Danny Parkins co host breakfast Ball, the winner of the
[0:16] Speaker 1: mythical FS one NFL Picks Championship. It should be noted
[0:22] Speaker 1: it's just like the USA Today High School Basketball Championship.
[0:25] Speaker 1: It's all mythical, so let's not go crazy on this ship.
[0:28] Speaker 1: It is definitely.
[0:30] Speaker 2: True that I only made it a competition between you,
[0:34] Speaker 2: me and Nick once I started to crush it and
[0:37] Speaker 2: distance myself off the field. So you know, going into
[0:41] Speaker 2: next year, if I start four and nine, you know,
[0:45] Speaker 2: it's just luck.
[0:47] Speaker 1: But when I'm crushing it, it's skill. And you guys
[0:51] Speaker 1: are in a competition you didn't even know you had entered.
[0:53] Speaker 1: You know, I said I've had three of my favorite shows.
[0:59] Speaker 1: I would say in the last ten years, I have
[1:02] Speaker 1: had the last three shows in a row. I've had
[1:05] Speaker 1: about as much fun as I can have at this
[1:07] Speaker 1: point of thirty years. WAG So because I love free agency,
[1:12] Speaker 1: I love the movement. I love when stuff breaks on
[1:15] Speaker 1: the show. You know, I just I Sometimes I think,
[1:20] Speaker 1: you know, the audience thinks we love football and football season,
[1:24] Speaker 1: but I actually find it more challenging when the season's
[1:26] Speaker 1: over and we have to sit there for two hours
[1:28] Speaker 1: in the morning and figure out ways to be compelling,
[1:31] Speaker 1: and there's not a lot out there. So this week
[1:34] Speaker 1: it's basically you've got B level players sometimes C plus
[1:38] Speaker 1: players transitioning to bad teams. And yet I had so
[1:42] Speaker 1: much damn fun this week, and I want to start
[1:45] Speaker 1: with the Bears because I honestly, and I don't remember
[1:47] Speaker 1: the last time I thought this. I it's obvious Ben
[1:51] Speaker 1: Johnson now runs the organization because he basically by acquiring
[1:56] Speaker 1: a guard a center, a guard is telling Ryan Pole,
[2:00] Speaker 1: your picks were not good. You know the organization. Well,
[2:05] Speaker 1: that's my take is there are certain coaches. Rabel and
[2:10] Speaker 1: New England is running the show. Belichick for years ran
[2:13] Speaker 1: the show. Mcvay's got a lot of power in Los Angeles,
[2:17] Speaker 1: whereas Brett Veat really runs personnel because Andy Reid doesn't
[2:21] Speaker 1: want to do it. Sean Payton's running Denver. Didn't it
[2:24] Speaker 1: feel like to you this is all Ben Johnson's stamp.
[2:27] Speaker 2: So I've heard you say this, and I think that
[2:29] Speaker 2: you're like eighty five to ninety percent correct. Ben Johnson
[2:36] Speaker 2: clearly now outranks Ryan Poles. And it's not a straight
[2:40] Speaker 2: like who makes more money, but it kind of is.
[2:43] Speaker 2: Ben Johnson makes considerably more money than Ryan Poles, and
[2:46] Speaker 2: obviously Ryan poles Is stock is down and Ben Johnson's
[2:50] Speaker 2: stock could not have been higher. So Ben Johnson has
[2:54] Speaker 2: more say. And the Jonah Jackson move is directly tied
[2:58] Speaker 2: to Ben Johnson. And that was the first move that happened.
[3:01] Speaker 2: They traded a late round pick for a guard from
[3:03] Speaker 2: the Rams who had been a former pro bowler, but
[3:05] Speaker 2: before he was with the Rams, he had been with
[3:07] Speaker 2: the Lions and Ben Johnson. Obviously the Lions have the
[3:11] Speaker 2: best offensive line them and the Eagles in the NFL.
[3:14] Speaker 2: He knows how valuable that is. I think Ryan Poles
[3:21] Speaker 2: has taken a little too much heat in this regard.
[3:25] Speaker 2: He was Matt Ryan's offensive lineman at BC. He is
[3:29] Speaker 2: a former offensive lineman. He was on a practice squad
[3:33] Speaker 2: in the NFL as an offensive lineman. His first ever
[3:36] Speaker 2: first rounds pick because the first year he didn't have
[3:39] Speaker 2: a first round pick because the previous regime had traded
[3:42] Speaker 2: one way to acquire justin fields. So his first year,
[3:46] Speaker 2: his first raft, he had two second round picks, and
[3:48] Speaker 2: he took Kyler Gordon and Jakwan Brisker, who are both
[3:53] Speaker 2: starting players in the secondary and then the next year,
[3:56] Speaker 2: when he had the ninth overall pick, he traded down
[3:59] Speaker 2: one spot, passed up Jalen Carter. I disagreed with it,
[4:02] Speaker 2: but he didn't think the organization was ready for the headache,
[4:05] Speaker 2: and he took Darnell Wright, who looks like he's going
[4:07] Speaker 2: to be the right tackle for the team for ten years.
[4:10] Speaker 2: Maybe not an All Pro, but he looks damn good.
[4:13] Speaker 2: But he yeah going to get us. And some of
[4:17] Speaker 2: the draft people were like, should it have been Broderick Jones,
[4:20] Speaker 2: the guy who went I think seventeen to the Steelers,
[4:23] Speaker 2: who wasn't able to start for a year plus and
[4:26] Speaker 2: definitely is not guaranteed to be a ten year starter
[4:31] Speaker 2: in the NFL.
[4:32] Speaker 1: And then so.
[4:33] Speaker 2: I think first time he had a first round pick,
[4:35] Speaker 2: he drafted a tackle. He gave Nate Davis money. Nate
[4:41] Speaker 2: Davis had a pretty good reputation. Mark Schlereth has told
[4:45] Speaker 2: me that he's like Nate Davis was one of my
[4:46] Speaker 2: favorite guards in the NFL when he was in Tennessee
[4:49] Speaker 2: Atlanta at taper off a little bit, Bear's paid him,
[4:52] Speaker 2: and it looks like Nate Davis got paid and stopped trying. Ye, So,
[4:58] Speaker 2: but it's not like that guy didn't have good tape,
[5:00] Speaker 2: and it's not like people didn't like him, and it's
[5:02] Speaker 2: not like that wasn't a significant investment in the offensive line.
[5:06] Speaker 2: Kevin Jenkins was a former second round pick as a
[5:08] Speaker 2: tackle who he moved to left guard Ryan Poles did,
[5:12] Speaker 2: and he was a better guard than tackle. But then
[5:14] Speaker 2: he got hurt and he can't stay on the field
[5:16] Speaker 2: and he never invested in center, which was has been
[5:19] Speaker 2: a disaster.
[5:20] Speaker 1: That Bears literally haven't had a good center since Olin Kreutz.
[5:23] Speaker 2: And left tackle is Braxton Jones, who I would not
[5:29] Speaker 2: say is good, but I would also not say is bad.
[5:32] Speaker 2: He's a replacement level player that Ryan Poles drafted in
[5:37] Speaker 2: the fifth round out of Southern Utah. That's a draft win.
[5:43] Speaker 2: What happened last year was a mediocre offensive line got
[5:48] Speaker 2: hurt with a rookie quarterback, and you fired your play
[5:53] Speaker 2: caller and your head coach so you couldn't scheme around it.
[5:57] Speaker 2: The offensive line was a disaster. Your quarterback got hit
[5:59] Speaker 2: six eight times, and it became a fire alarm, like
[6:04] Speaker 2: this is we're going to get Kayleb Williams killed. We
[6:06] Speaker 2: are like really flirting with David Carr level of sabotage
[6:11] Speaker 2: here if we don't overhaul it. So that's long winded
[6:14] Speaker 2: and maybe a little bit more in the weeds than
[6:16] Speaker 2: people that don't follow the Bears want to know. But like,
[6:18] Speaker 2: I don't think it's that Ryan Poles doesn't prioritize the
[6:21] Speaker 2: offensive line. I think it's that when he took over,
[6:24] Speaker 2: he had such limited resources with draft capital that it
[6:30] Speaker 2: took a while. And last year was never supposed to
[6:33] Speaker 2: be a good offensive line, but it wasn't supposed to
[6:36] Speaker 2: be that bad. And I think that anybody would have
[6:40] Speaker 2: spent on the offensive line this offseason, but Ben Johnson
[6:43] Speaker 2: kind of turbo charged it, and so he gets credit
[6:46] Speaker 2: for it.
[6:47] Speaker 1: But I can't.
[6:48] Speaker 2: I have a hard time believing that a smart guy
[6:51] Speaker 2: who came up under Brett Vik who by the way,
[6:53] Speaker 2: I'll add one more detail. He was the director of
[6:57] Speaker 2: college personnel in Kansas City when they lost that Super
[7:02] Speaker 2: Bowl to Tampa, And in the off season they signed
[7:07] Speaker 2: Joe Tooney, they drafted Creed Humphrey, and they drafted Tray Smith.
[7:13] Speaker 2: Creed Humphrey now set the market at center, Tray Smith
[7:17] Speaker 2: set the market at guard, and now Joe Tooney's a
[7:19] Speaker 2: Bear and he was an All Pro for a couple
[7:21] Speaker 2: of years in Kansas City. So he was in Kansas
[7:23] Speaker 2: City when Mahomes got killed in a Super Bowl, they
[7:25] Speaker 2: brought in three new offensive linemen. He's the GM in Chicago,
[7:28] Speaker 2: when Kayleb Williams got killed, they brought in three offensive linemen,
[7:32] Speaker 2: one of whom is literally the same guy they brought
[7:34] Speaker 2: in Kansas City. So I think Ryan Pohls knows about
[7:36] Speaker 2: the offensive line, cares about the offensive line, prioritizes the
[7:39] Speaker 2: offensive line. He just made a couple of bad mistakes
[7:43] Speaker 2: Nate Davis most principally not investing in a real center
[7:46] Speaker 2: probably right behind it, and he underestimated how little.
[7:49] Speaker 1: Depth he had to protect Kayleb Williams last year? Is
[7:53] Speaker 1: there anything that I mean? They have the Vikings back
[7:58] Speaker 1: to back in London. I don't like Minnesota like everybody else.
[8:01] Speaker 1: I think they're a fourth place team. Was there anything
[8:03] Speaker 1: about the schedule that jumped out to you?
[8:06] Speaker 3: I think when you look at I lump Minnesota in
[8:09] Speaker 3: Chicago in the same thing, I got thirty years of history.
[8:12] Speaker 3: Green Bay every year, for the most part, is ten
[8:14] Speaker 3: plus wins right right in the Lions. Now, I think
[8:17] Speaker 3: have established themselves. What happens in the playoffs, who knows,
[8:20] Speaker 3: but they're going to be a double digit win team.
[8:22] Speaker 3: When you look at the Bears and you look at
[8:24] Speaker 3: Minnesota because of the divisions that they drew this year
[8:27] Speaker 3: in the rotation, it's hard and the pressure. Listen this
[8:31] Speaker 3: Caleb thing, I'm sure we'll talk about it. A lot
[8:33] Speaker 3: of pressure on him, a lot of pressure on the Bears,
[8:36] Speaker 3: a lot of pressure on McCarthy. And the pressure is
[8:38] Speaker 3: not like on DJ Moore or Justin Jefferson. It's squarely
[8:42] Speaker 3: on the quarterback. And these games, like you said, you open,
[8:47] Speaker 3: you open your your NFL career at Chicago.
[8:51] Speaker 1: That's just that's tough.
[8:52] Speaker 3: And hell, you could argue the same thing on the
[8:54] Speaker 3: flip side about at Caleb Williams, your first game with
[8:56] Speaker 3: his new coach Monday night. For everyone watching, these are
[9:00] Speaker 3: intense environments on these two quarterbacks. Now, Caleb has some
[9:03] Speaker 3: seasoning like he JJ does not in terms of ever
[9:06] Speaker 3: played a regular season game. But I think those two
[9:09] Speaker 3: schedules for those two guys, not every team in this
[9:11] Speaker 3: division can win ten plus games. One of these teams
[9:14] Speaker 3: is going to go eight or nine or worse. Right,
[9:16] Speaker 3: it's gonna be one of those two teams. I don't
[9:18] Speaker 3: know which one. Like, I know Kevin O'Connell can be
[9:21] Speaker 3: a head coach. I love the Vikings roster, but man,
[9:24] Speaker 3: this guy's never started a regular season game. If you
[9:27] Speaker 3: told me right now he's a top fifteen quarterback, I'd
[9:31] Speaker 3: be like, they'll win ten or eleven games, no problem.
[9:33] Speaker 3: But if you tell me it's Rocky, I don't care
[9:36] Speaker 3: how you could have ten justin Jeffersons, if your quarterback
[9:38] Speaker 3: plays overwhelmed, it's hard. I mean we see it every year.
[9:42] Speaker 3: Good teams are the quarterback plays.
[9:44] Speaker 1: Well and screwed, and the Packers drafted a first round
[9:47] Speaker 1: round wide receiver. The Lions are stacked offensively. The Bears
[9:51] Speaker 1: has been a fortunother offensive line. JJ McCarthy's gonna have
[9:54] Speaker 1: to throw the ball thirty five times. This is not
[9:57] Speaker 1: a defensive division. This is not the AFC nor this
[10:01] Speaker 1: is the NFC North and it is going to be
[10:04] Speaker 1: a track meet. And so that's my question with JJ McCarthy.
[10:07] Speaker 1: I would feel differently if you were in a different division.
[10:11] Speaker 1: But Detroit is stacked offensively with the best of line
[10:14] Speaker 1: in the league. You can say what you want about.
[10:16] Speaker 1: Ben Johnson is going to be better with Caleb Williams
[10:19] Speaker 1: than Matti. Everflus and Dolmen and Toney changed the offensive line. Yeah,
[10:23] Speaker 1: and then you know green Bay's Green Bay. They went
[10:26] Speaker 1: and got another wider receiver, which tells you we're going
[10:29] Speaker 1: to make this Jordan love thing work. And it wasn't
[10:32] Speaker 1: terrible last year. There was some bumps. So my thing
[10:35] Speaker 1: is McCarthy, who never threw the ball at Michigan, is
[10:37] Speaker 1: going to be asked to throw the ball forty times
[10:38] Speaker 1: a game a lot because either they'll be trailing or
[10:41] Speaker 1: they'll be in shootouts. This is going to be a
[10:43] Speaker 1: shootout division. So I just don't love them with that
[10:47] Speaker 1: is the marquet of the movie.
[10:49] Speaker 3: But do you feel comfortable? I mean, listen, we have
[10:53] Speaker 3: a strong recent history of these young offensive coordinators hitting
[10:57] Speaker 3: the ground, running and being stars. Some of them get
[11:00] Speaker 3: overwhelmed historically in the league, like Ben Johnson. It is
[11:03] Speaker 3: this is not an easy first job, right. It's like
[11:05] Speaker 3: solid with the Jets. A lot of people are watching.
[11:07] Speaker 3: There's a ton of hype. The Caleb stuff is already
[11:11] Speaker 3: even though it's weird. Right, everything we're talking about today
[11:13] Speaker 3: in this article is based on something eighteen months ago.
[11:16] Speaker 3: It's not like he just said this yesterday. But still,
[11:18] Speaker 3: I mean, this is something that carries with you. I
[11:21] Speaker 3: think there's a ton of pressure on him because I
[11:23] Speaker 3: would say the same thing about Caleb, like he's just
[11:26] Speaker 3: gonna outduel the Lafor's offense and the Lions group. I
[11:31] Speaker 3: mean it's gonna be hard, Like he's gonna get in
[11:32] Speaker 3: some shootouts. You know, he kind of freelanced now he's
[11:35] Speaker 3: more comfortable. He has a history, he is used to.
[11:38] Speaker 3: I've been in shootouts, so I can play like that
[11:40] Speaker 3: JJ was not. I mean JJ was on a team
[11:42] Speaker 3: that I mean was the big Ohio State is always
[11:46] Speaker 3: built like an SEC team, but Hardball built that thing
[11:48] Speaker 3: like an SEC team with unlimited NFL players where they
[11:51] Speaker 3: hand the ball off and they play defense.
[11:53] Speaker 1: So yeah, that's right, one of those two teams.
[11:55] Speaker 3: I gotta give it a little more time, but it's
[11:58] Speaker 3: just not going to go as well is to hype
[12:00] Speaker 3: because the expectations I would say for I mean for Minnesota,
[12:03] Speaker 3: they have a what do you think a top six
[12:06] Speaker 3: to seven roster in the NFL minus the quarterback. I
[12:09] Speaker 3: mean they got one of the better teams in the
[12:10] Speaker 3: NFL top to bottom, and I say the Bears have
[12:12] Speaker 3: a pretty damn good roster too.
[12:14] Speaker 1: Oh, I totally think I think Chicago's offensive you go line,
[12:19] Speaker 1: tight end, receivers and Ben Johnson, I just don't see,
[12:24] Speaker 1: you know. I mean, go look at Hackett to Sean Payton.
[12:27] Speaker 1: It was a touchdown to eight points a game, and
[12:30] Speaker 1: I think eber Flews to Ben Johnson is probably somewhere
[12:34] Speaker 1: between a field goal and six points a game.
[12:36] Speaker 3: But here's the thing, though, Colin, and this is what
[12:39] Speaker 3: I get back to with the coordinator Ben with Detroit,
[12:42] Speaker 3: who was just became like Kyle shanahan or mcpagh or whoever.
[12:45] Speaker 3: All he had to worry about was the place right now.
[12:48] Speaker 3: On Monday. What happens when you're a backup safety got
[12:51] Speaker 3: a DUI on Tuesday. Hey, this guy turns out he
[12:55] Speaker 3: shattered his ankle. Like you have all this other stuff coming.
[12:58] Speaker 3: You can't just sit there and scheme plays NonStop, especially
[13:02] Speaker 3: the first time head coach, and then when the game's
[13:04] Speaker 3: going on, you got to manage the cl You've got
[13:06] Speaker 3: a lot going on for the first time ever, it's
[13:08] Speaker 3: just a tougher transition. And that's where Kevin O'Connell, to me,
[13:12] Speaker 3: has a big advantage. He is used to just being
[13:15] Speaker 3: the play caller slash the boss. Like there is a
[13:17] Speaker 3: learning If you told me, hey, John, you not only
[13:20] Speaker 3: need to get all the content and record a podcast,
[13:23] Speaker 3: we now need you to run the sales and the
[13:25] Speaker 3: graphics and do some cuts you need to do, it'd
[13:29] Speaker 3: be a curve for a couple of months of me
[13:31] Speaker 3: figuring out how to manage everything right. So that's I'm
[13:34] Speaker 3: always just hesitant when it comes to guys first time
[13:37] Speaker 3: head coaches, Like think how much easier Pete Carroll. He's
[13:39] Speaker 3: sitting in that desk he's very comfortable in, you know,
[13:42] Speaker 3: telling who what to do when like he's just done
[13:44] Speaker 3: it before. So that's that's the only thing. And I'm
[13:46] Speaker 3: not anti Ben Johnson. I mean what he did the
[13:49] Speaker 3: last couple of years was awesome. It is just a
[13:51] Speaker 3: lot harder taking on a lot more responsibility and trying
[13:54] Speaker 3: to maintain your boy genius kind of narrative. The way
[13:58] Speaker 3: everyone talks.
[13:58] Speaker 1: About him, like, you know, the Kleeb thing is funny.
[14:00] Speaker 1: So I went on Chicago radio a year ago for
[14:03] Speaker 1: the Draft, and I don't do a lot of local
[14:06] Speaker 1: radio shows because I don't know who the people are,
[14:08] Speaker 1: and you know they you can get burned. But I
[14:12] Speaker 1: knew I was going to move to Chicago. So I
[14:14] Speaker 1: go on the Chicago radio station. I forget which one,
[14:17] Speaker 1: and I say, you know, I'm being told that it's
[14:23] Speaker 1: Caleb Williams. Would ideally his dad would not want him
[14:27] Speaker 1: to go to Chicago, but he's going to bite the
[14:30] Speaker 1: bullet and he loves the city and he wants to
[14:32] Speaker 1: he wants to be the first Great Bears quarterback. Well,
[14:36] Speaker 1: I go off the air and somebody sends me something
[14:38] Speaker 1: or a clip or something. They basically dogged my sources.
[14:41] Speaker 1: Coward doesn't know anything. Well, it comes out Seth Wickersham
[14:44] Speaker 1: basically today came out and said yeah, basically his dad
[14:48] Speaker 1: didn't want him to go there. He's got multiple quotes,
[14:51] Speaker 1: and I'm like, well, may have been that Seth and
[14:54] Speaker 1: I had some of the same sources. He had agents.
[14:58] Speaker 1: Apparently Seth that talked to his dad have been multiple agents.
[15:01] Speaker 1: I didn't get it from Caleb's dad, but I did
[15:03] Speaker 1: get it from people very close to Caleb, and so
[15:07] Speaker 1: I think it was the same station reached out and said, hey,
[15:10] Speaker 1: you want to come back on and spike the football,
[15:11] Speaker 1: and I'm like, yeah, I'm going to pass on that.
[15:13] Speaker 1: You know, I'm not bitter, but it's like, you know,
[15:16] Speaker 1: if I give you that, if you if I give
[15:17] Speaker 1: you the time, don't question my sources. You don't have
[15:19] Speaker 1: to like my opinion. But you know, I wouldn't go
[15:22] Speaker 1: on and make stuff up. So and the truth was,
[15:27] Speaker 1: and I was, didn't.
[15:28] Speaker 3: Caleb kind of come out or like some of his
[15:30] Speaker 3: people right away after you said that and say it's
[15:32] Speaker 3: kind of right.
[15:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, well they said we're good, We're good. Of course
[15:37] Speaker 1: they did. They don't and I and you know, like
[15:41] Speaker 1: I knew the game. That's why I didn't react to that.
[15:43] Speaker 1: I knew what was going on. I knew what I'd
[15:45] Speaker 1: been told. The knew it was the truth. Somebody who
[15:48] Speaker 1: had been good never burned me. It was fourth or
[15:50] Speaker 1: fifth time I've gotten good information from somebody. But the
[15:53] Speaker 1: point was I didn't blame him. I said, yeah, if
[15:56] Speaker 1: my son was a quarterback, I wouldn't want him to
[15:58] Speaker 1: play for the Bears. I've never had a four thousand
[15:59] Speaker 1: yeard passer. That's literally impossible. That's like right, driving a
[16:04] Speaker 1: car for your entire life and never having like a
[16:07] Speaker 1: parking ticket or a speeding ticket. It's just gonna happen.
[16:09] Speaker 1: It's inevitable, right like and so any And when the
[16:12] Speaker 1: story came out today, my take is it just doesn't
[16:16] Speaker 1: bother me. Like they looked into you know, what could
[16:19] Speaker 1: they do legally and they said, yeah, the only way
[16:22] Speaker 1: around it is just to do an L way and
[16:24] Speaker 1: go public and let's just let's just not do it.
[16:27] Speaker 1: But it doesn't bother me. We've got an ELI situation,
[16:30] Speaker 1: We've got an L way, and I think the Bears
[16:32] Speaker 1: are historically unique. It's they've just never done that position, right?
[16:37] Speaker 1: Does it bother you? Now that Seth Wickersham comes out
[16:41] Speaker 1: and says, yeah, they thought about making a stink.
[16:44] Speaker 3: No, I mean, ultimately, I don't really give a shit,
[16:46] Speaker 3: but I would say this. I don't think it helps Kaleb.
[16:50] Speaker 3: And I always take the stance of like, I never
[16:52] Speaker 3: blame you know, wives parents. Their relationship with a player
[17:00] Speaker 3: is so much different than everyone else, right, so they
[17:03] Speaker 3: are so much closer to the sun emotionally. It doesn't
[17:06] Speaker 3: bother me. I know people with Oklahoma. I was hearing
[17:09] Speaker 3: a long time ago that his dad's a lot. That's
[17:12] Speaker 3: part of college sports. You deal a lot with the
[17:15] Speaker 3: parents in the pros. Nobody wants to hear from mom
[17:19] Speaker 3: or dad.
[17:19] Speaker 1: Not a soul.
[17:20] Speaker 3: We're paying Caleb forty million dollars guaranteed, let's throw thirty touchdowns.
[17:25] Speaker 3: And I think his comments sometimes like, you know, he's
[17:30] Speaker 3: trying to be a support of dad. The one has
[17:32] Speaker 3: any issue with that. Jayden Daniels's mom, of course, is
[17:36] Speaker 3: all the floozies to stay away from her son. Well,
[17:38] Speaker 3: guess what her son's playing really well in football. She
[17:41] Speaker 3: doesn't talk anything about his professional life. It's all personal stuff.
[17:44] Speaker 3: This guy comes out and makes comments about the CBA
[17:48] Speaker 3: is unconstitutional, the rookie Wade scale. Well, why do they
[17:52] Speaker 3: create a rookie Wade scale because guys like JaMarcus Russell
[17:55] Speaker 3: were scamming the league where the veterans weren't getting the money. So, Caleb,
[17:59] Speaker 3: you know if that rooks wage scale hadn't been so
[18:01] Speaker 3: when you make comments like that, people kind of look
[18:03] Speaker 3: side eyed.
[18:04] Speaker 1: Listen.
[18:05] Speaker 3: And the other thing that's really comes through is Ryan
[18:07] Speaker 3: Poles is quoted in there like we're taking you, buddy,
[18:09] Speaker 3: so get ready like this you talk about this A lot.
[18:12] Speaker 3: Player empowerment in the NFL doesn't really roll like that.
[18:15] Speaker 3: I would say this if you're Ryan Poles, like you
[18:18] Speaker 3: know Adam Peters. Do you think Adam Peters right now
[18:20] Speaker 3: would trade Jayden Daniels for Caleb Williams in this situation.
[18:24] Speaker 3: And here's the other thing. A lot of Caleb's Caleb
[18:27] Speaker 3: wasn't making these comments about the CBA are going to
[18:29] Speaker 3: the UFL. Is coming from his dad. But all these
[18:32] Speaker 3: comments get aggregated and a lot of the players in
[18:34] Speaker 3: the league see this and they're like, who does this
[18:36] Speaker 3: kid think he is?
[18:37] Speaker 1: And I just think it adds pressure.
[18:39] Speaker 3: And again, this is I would be more worked up
[18:42] Speaker 3: if these comments came last week or two weeks ago.
[18:44] Speaker 3: This was last January February before he got into the NFL.
[18:48] Speaker 3: But I'm sorry, it just does not help his situation.
[18:52] Speaker 3: It adds pressure, It just adds a lot of craziness
[18:55] Speaker 3: to this situation. New coach and they get to start fresh.
[18:58] Speaker 3: But I just think that, like we just need to
[19:01] Speaker 3: calm down and just and just win some games and
[19:03] Speaker 3: throw some touchdowns before you start. Remember last year the
[19:06] Speaker 3: equity talk, we want in on the franchise. You're gonna
[19:09] Speaker 3: go to the UFL and sit out of You're like,
[19:11] Speaker 3: kive me a break, you know, and look again, this
[19:14] Speaker 3: is his dad, not it's Caleb. It's not saying I'm
[19:17] Speaker 3: going to the UFL. And at the end of the day,
[19:18] Speaker 3: all these comments didn't come true. He just allowed he
[19:22] Speaker 3: went to the Bears and what they were not wrong
[19:25] Speaker 3: about the coaching staff. I mean that was a disaster,
[19:27] Speaker 3: which we all knew coming in. But I think sometimes
[19:30] Speaker 3: with a very aggressive parent like this, and I haven't
[19:34] Speaker 3: seen a quote from Caleb's dad since he got in
[19:36] Speaker 3: the league, you gotta be careful about saying some of
[19:38] Speaker 3: this stuff because your son has to cash those checks
[19:41] Speaker 3: on the field. So I just think if you're the Bears,
[19:46] Speaker 3: like you're like, oh my god when you see this
[19:48] Speaker 3: come out, because again, didn't he write a book on
[19:50] Speaker 3: a bunch of quarterbacks And this is the thing that
[19:52] Speaker 3: gets cut and this is you know, the headlines going viral,
[19:57] Speaker 3: getting just sent around. I'm telling you, Adam p goes
[20:00] Speaker 3: to bed like out my cornerbacks just no issues, no problems,
[20:04] Speaker 3: And it's just sometimes it's your family, but man, this
[20:07] Speaker 3: is you just don't want it to deal with any
[20:09] Speaker 3: of this, especially when you're not making place. I mean,
[20:11] Speaker 3: it did not go well.
[20:13] Speaker 1: Yeah, I think he's set up for success now. I
[20:17] Speaker 1: mean we were talking about it in the show today.
[20:19] Speaker 1: Tua and Jared Goff had bad first years in bad
[20:22] Speaker 1: relationships with coaches or at least coach coaches that didn't
[20:25] Speaker 1: get them. I do think there's more good offensive coaching
[20:28] Speaker 1: than ever before in the league, and your second or
[20:30] Speaker 1: third team Gino Smith, Sam Darnold, Baker, Mayfield. You know,
[20:34] Speaker 1: Baker got Liam Cohen and McVeigh after Freddie Kitchens, like
[20:37] Speaker 1: it does sometimes take a while. It used to be
[20:40] Speaker 1: if your first place didn't work, there just weren't that
[20:43] Speaker 1: many great offensive coaches in the league and they weren't
[20:45] Speaker 1: leading places where they were located. Now, guys, it's a
[20:48] Speaker 1: much more mobile society. There's good offensive coaches. If you
[20:53] Speaker 1: have one or two good years at a place, you're
[20:54] Speaker 1: a head coach, if you're an offensive coach, so you
[20:57] Speaker 1: can you can actually have a hiccup in your first
[20:59] Speaker 1: stop and maybe your second and maybe get a third shot.
[21:03] Speaker 1: So I think that bows well for Caleb. Like a
[21:06] Speaker 1: Jared Goff, I didn't think he stood a chance last year.
[21:09] Speaker 1: I think it's much more set up to succeed. Nothing

[22:34] Speaker 1: So I want to end with this, so you you
[22:36] Speaker 1: would and I would admit this too. I've moved around
[22:39] Speaker 1: the country. People know that. Generally when I move around
[22:42] Speaker 1: the country, the only sports team that I tend to.
[22:46] Speaker 1: It's hard because I love football so much. When I
[22:48] Speaker 1: lived in Tampa, that's kind of a Bucks fan. I
[22:51] Speaker 1: grew up in the Northwest. I was a Seahawks fan.
[22:53] Speaker 1: I live in Los Angeles. I'm a Ramn Charger fan.
[22:56] Speaker 1: I try not to be a Homer on the air,
[22:57] Speaker 1: but it's it's I know people in the front office
[23:00] Speaker 1: contacts there. Now I moved to Chicago, I've already got
[23:02] Speaker 1: connections with the Bears, right, so I'm talking to people
[23:05] Speaker 1: and so, and you grew up here. So I under
[23:07] Speaker 1: I've always understood that Bill Simmons loves the Celtics, you're
[23:10] Speaker 1: gonna love your teams. I get it right, like like
[23:12] Speaker 1: in the audience understands that you're still objective. But I
[23:15] Speaker 1: said this this week on the show on f S one,
[23:18] Speaker 1: I said, I'm going to take five quarterbacks that we
[23:23] Speaker 1: that we would We're not going to I'm not going
[23:25] Speaker 1: to take a Justin Herbert overrated, Jalen Hurst underrated. I'm
[23:28] Speaker 1: not going to take guys on their fringe. I'm going
[23:30] Speaker 1: to take Andrew Louck, Jayden Daniels, Joe Burrow. Who else
[23:35] Speaker 1: did I take?
[23:36] Speaker 2: C J?
[23:36] Speaker 1: Stroud? I took somebody else. I took five of them,
[23:39] Speaker 1: And I said, and I didn't take Mahomes. I took
[23:42] Speaker 1: Lamar Jackson. So I said, let's get mahomes Alan out. Okay,
[23:45] Speaker 1: they're like historically great. Like, so I took five guys
[23:48] Speaker 1: that none of us are going to argue they're all great.
[23:51] Speaker 1: How long once they had a competent coach did it
[23:55] Speaker 1: take for you to go, oh shit, there as a
[23:58] Speaker 1: franchise guy? So C J. Stroud did not throw an
[24:02] Speaker 1: interception until week six, pretty obvious he was different. Lamar
[24:07] Speaker 1: Jackson won six of US verst seven and by the
[24:10] Speaker 1: second game you were wondering if he was even faster
[24:13] Speaker 1: than Michael Vick. He was electric. Joe Burrow weeks two
[24:16] Speaker 1: and three is throwing for three hundred and fifty yards
[24:19] Speaker 1: behind an absolutely atrocious offensive line with a coach nobody liked.
[24:24] Speaker 1: Jade Daniels weeks two, three and four, He's completing like
[24:26] Speaker 1: twenty eight of thirty one. You're like, okay, this is
[24:29] Speaker 1: a cheat code. What is going on? And Joe and
[24:32] Speaker 1: so I went down and through all of them. So
[24:37] Speaker 1: now I bring you to Caleb Williams. Yeah, so again
[24:42] Speaker 1: golf with Jeff Fisher, Goff with McVeigh. By week two,
[24:46] Speaker 1: he's throwing for three hundred and fifty yards. You're like, oh,
[24:48] Speaker 1: Jared Goff can play like he's he's beating Mahomes in
[24:51] Speaker 1: a shootout on Monday Night football. You're like, you know,
[24:54] Speaker 1: pretty early in his career, you're like, oh, yeah, this guy,
[24:56] Speaker 1: this dude can play. So first week so my take
[25:02] Speaker 1: is good, not great, is hard to spot, real deal
[25:10] Speaker 1: and sucks jumps off the page. So week one, Caleb
[25:17] Speaker 1: Williams faces Brian floor is at home perfect weather. Let's
[25:22] Speaker 1: say he struggles. Brian Flores has been punitive to young
[25:27] Speaker 1: quarterbacks and cayleb Williams is bad. What is your take.
[25:34] Speaker 1: I won't be handling it well, Colin. I'll tell you
[25:37] Speaker 1: that I won't be handling it well. He needs to
[25:43] Speaker 1: be very good right away. Hey, but here's the thing.
[25:47] Speaker 2: Obviously, I watched every down of the Bears last year
[25:52] Speaker 2: and have for my entire life.
[25:56] Speaker 1: He is good. He's good now.
[26:00] Speaker 3: It was not easy.
[26:02] Speaker 2: It was not always pretty, but I trust my eye
[26:06] Speaker 2: test here. If you get sacked sixty eight times and
[26:11] Speaker 2: still have better than a three to one touchdown the
[26:14] Speaker 2: interception ratio, and your play caller got fired nine games
[26:19] Speaker 2: in to your season, and then you fire your coach,
[26:24] Speaker 2: and you had controversy and you lost on a Hail Mary,
[26:28] Speaker 2: and you had all of that hype and that scrutiny,
[26:30] Speaker 2: and the guy who was drafted behind you is having
[26:32] Speaker 2: a historic rookie year and goes all the way to
[26:34] Speaker 2: the NFC Championship game and you get your ass kicked,
[26:38] Speaker 2: and you play all seventeen games and like you're still
[26:41] Speaker 2: standing at the end of it, you don't suck like bad.
[26:47] Speaker 1: You said like good bad. It's a little He's not bad.
[26:50] Speaker 1: He's not bad. I'm not worried about bad.
[26:54] Speaker 2: It's I still think the guy's ceiling can be MVP
[26:57] Speaker 2: of the league. Like I still think greatness is very
[27:01] Speaker 2: likely an outcome here. But yeah, Week one, Minnesota Monday
[27:07] Speaker 2: Night football. Week two against his old team, Yeah, yeah.
[27:12] Speaker 1: I mean no, I will say this. I will say this.
[27:15] Speaker 2: It seems like forty percent of the years in the
[27:18] Speaker 2: last decade, the Bears have opened with the Packers.
[27:21] Speaker 1: I know that's not.
[27:22] Speaker 2: Actually accurate, but it feels that way. That's the absolute worst.
[27:28] Speaker 2: Any Bears fan will tell you. Bears packers. It's just
[27:32] Speaker 2: as like a different thing. All of our families have
[27:36] Speaker 2: some Packers people in it, like and for me it
[27:38] Speaker 2: was extreme. My dad's entire family was from Wisconsin. You
[27:41] Speaker 2: just you're in weddings with these people, you work with
[27:44] Speaker 2: these people, your neighbors with these people. Like my old
[27:47] Speaker 2: radio station signal like reaches far into Wisconsin, like you
[27:50] Speaker 2: could hear it in Milwaukee. So like it's just like
[27:54] Speaker 2: Bears packers. Week one is too stressful, there's too many
[27:57] Speaker 2: grand Like I can handle Bears Vikings. I can handle
[28:00] Speaker 2: Bears Lions week one, Bears Packers. If Caleb Williams would
[28:05] Speaker 2: come out week one and get out played by Jordan
[28:08] Speaker 2: Love and they would lose and he'd throw like two picks,
[28:12] Speaker 2: that's just like Sky's falling type stuff. So I think
[28:16] Speaker 2: I can handle Bears Vikings on Monday Night Football week one.
[28:19] Speaker 2: But if he's terrible, I'm not gonna be handling you.
[28:25] Speaker 1: Well, I'm not.
[28:28] Speaker 2: It's gonna be tough to be neutral. I'll be I'll
[28:30] Speaker 2: be totally honest with you. That's gonna be unfortunate. But
[28:33] Speaker 2: if he's great, oh deep dish beets on TV for everybody.
[28:36] Speaker 1: No, I saw that first game and I went, oh, god, Flores,
[28:40] Speaker 1: what a nightmare Flora. Yeah, it's not a great spot.
[28:42] Speaker 1: But but again, like, but it can go the other way.
[28:47] Speaker 1: Put up thirty. Put put up thirty.
[28:52] Speaker 2: We never mentioned Shane Waldron's name in Chicago ever again,
[28:56] Speaker 2: you know what I mean.
[28:56] Speaker 1: Like, wasted rookie year? Why did you hire you? Why
[29:00] Speaker 1: didn't you blow it all up?
[29:01] Speaker 2: Start fresh with Kate, like put up thirty week one
[29:05] Speaker 2: and all of your sins are forgiven and we're good.
[29:08] Speaker 1: Yeah, you know the air thing, Danny. That wasn't true
[29:10] Speaker 1: years ago. There's so many good young offensive coaches now
[29:14] Speaker 1: in the NFL. Yeah, it used to be if your
[29:17] Speaker 1: first coach didn't work, you were screwed. But like Gino,
[29:20] Speaker 1: Donald Baker, tu Ahead, Brian Flores then he was a
[29:24] Speaker 1: pro bowler, Goff's first year was not only unremarkable, it
[29:28] Speaker 1: was unrecognizable. So truth is now there are multiple examples.
[29:33] Speaker 1: Sam Darnold's a totally different player. It used to be
[29:37] Speaker 1: there were like four or five offensive guys that were
[29:40] Speaker 1: next level, Like every other staff has the next Ben
[29:44] Speaker 1: Johnson or an offensive coach. So I mean, god, look
[29:48] Speaker 1: at I mean, you go to the AFC alone, it's like, oh,
[29:50] Speaker 1: there's Andy Reid, and oh there's Sean Payton, and there's
[29:53] Speaker 1: Jim Harbaugh in this and Chip Kelly in the same division.
[29:57] Speaker 1: You have those four coaches on staff. So I think
[30:01] Speaker 1: we've gotten to a point where if you have a
[30:04] Speaker 1: Mulligan season, it's just I mean, nobody remembers Goff's first
[30:08] Speaker 1: season he was owing seven.
[30:09] Speaker 2: I think. Yeah, Listen, in Jacksonville, Trevor Lawrence showed enough
[30:14] Speaker 2: through multiple failed coaches, they still gave them a quarter
[30:17] Speaker 2: of a billion dollar contract. They hit on Brian Thomas.
[30:21] Speaker 2: Last year, they draft Travis Hunter. This year they hire
[30:23] Speaker 2: Liam Cohen to be their coach, who was a big
[30:25] Speaker 2: part of Baker Mayfield's success in Tampa, being as consistently
[30:29] Speaker 2: great on.
[30:29] Speaker 1: Offense as they've been. He's in your five.
[30:34] Speaker 2: Like, just Trevor Lawrence enraged me in way too many
[30:39] Speaker 2: fumbles and red zone interceptions, yet no doubt, like I
[30:42] Speaker 2: think that, like selling stock on, Trevor Lawrence has been
[30:45] Speaker 2: totally reasonable. Like his career is not over, right, you know,
[30:50] Speaker 2: it's his career is not over. If Liam Cohen could
[30:54] Speaker 2: do that with Baker, it's definitely on the board that
[30:57] Speaker 2: Trevor Lawrence turns this thing around and rips off five, six,
[31:03] Speaker 2: seven really good years and changes the complete narrative his career.
[31:07] Speaker 2: But now, listen, I think it's still much more likely
[31:09] Speaker 2: than not that Caleb Williams is great than he is mediocre.
[31:13] Speaker 1: Danny Parkins FS one love him on the volume, stops
[31:18] Speaker 1: by about once twice a month, as Oll was this
[31:20] Speaker 1: was great, Thanks buddy, Yeah, this was fun. Thanks go on.
[31:22] Speaker 2: Anytime people, people generally speaking, fear what they don't understand,
[31:27] Speaker 2: you know, maybe you don't. But I think a huge
[31:31] Speaker 2: percentage of people fear what they don't understand, and it's
[31:36] Speaker 2: complicated and you don't know where it's gonna go. It
[31:42] Speaker 2: clearly is the type of thing though that is like
[31:45] Speaker 2: a tool, right, It's gonna make some things worse and
[31:51] Speaker 2: a lot of things better. Your small business owner example
[31:55] Speaker 2: is a great one. It's going to help that guy's business.
[31:58] Speaker 2: How about this the Internet. It has killed retail, but
[32:01] Speaker 2: it took twenty five years, Like it killed malls, but
[32:06] Speaker 2: it didn't do it in two years. And the people
[32:09] Speaker 2: that were investing in malls, that paid attention fifteen years
[32:12] Speaker 2: ago were getting out of malls right like, so they
[32:15] Speaker 2: got out.
[32:15] Speaker 1: Of the business. You're going to have a heads up
[32:18] Speaker 1: on stuff. Nothing happens overnight. Even if it kills consultants,
[32:23] Speaker 1: it will be over a decade that it will kill
[32:25] Speaker 1: consultants because not everybody's going to use AI. Just like
[32:27] Speaker 1: it took our grandpa and our dad's years to figure
[32:29] Speaker 1: out the Internet. So things just everything needs to bake,
[32:33] Speaker 1: you know'll give you an example of this in sports.
[32:36] Speaker 1: So when the college football playoff was announced for twelve
[32:39] Speaker 1: teams eventually fourteen sixteen, it cut right down the middle.
[32:44] Speaker 1: There were the people like myself that are like, oh,
[32:46] Speaker 1: this is awesome. December is going to be awesome. These
[32:48] Speaker 1: bowl games are so dried up, Like we got forty
[32:51] Speaker 1: five bowl games. I watched four. I thought it was obvious,
[32:57] Speaker 1: like December now is going to be even better in
[33:01] Speaker 1: December is great with NFL playoffs, and we saw that
[33:03] Speaker 1: to be true. But there was another group, including a
[33:06] Speaker 1: lot of the media, that said, oh, it's gonna kill rivalries.
[33:09] Speaker 1: And my take is, when Texas played Georgia last year
[33:13] Speaker 1: was the highest rated game, right, I think before the
[33:16] Speaker 1: National Championship. That's not a rivalry. People watch good. When
[33:20] Speaker 1: Texas plays Ohio State on Fox over the Labor Day weekend,
[33:24] Speaker 1: people watch good, and they'll watch it a second time.
[33:27] Speaker 1: You watched Oregon Ohio State the first time, Sure it
[33:30] Speaker 1: was a terrible game, but you'll watch it the second time.
[33:32] Speaker 1: So my take is it doesn't matter. We watched. NFL
[33:35] Speaker 1: football teams can play three times in the season. I
[33:37] Speaker 1: remember years the Steelers and Ravens played three times. I
[33:39] Speaker 1: watched all of them, So that's like to me. I
[33:44] Speaker 1: was shocked by the number of people that were college
[33:47] Speaker 1: football fans like Diehard's or media that were like, this
[33:50] Speaker 1: is bad, it will kill urgency. Well, what it actually
[33:54] Speaker 1: did is it allows teams now like Ohio State and
[33:58] Speaker 1: Texas to play Opening Week and whoever loses is fine.
[34:03] Speaker 1: There'll be more big games in December and more big
[34:07] Speaker 1: games in September. Do you think it makes the week
[34:11] Speaker 1: one game less big? Though I watched great? No, I
[34:18] Speaker 1: know you do.
[34:20] Speaker 2: You are a super fan of college football Michigan Ohio State.
[34:26] Speaker 2: Last year, the loser of the game wins the national championship,
[34:34] Speaker 2: and on some level, not to a Michigan fan and
[34:38] Speaker 2: not to an Ohio State fan, but to a guy
[34:41] Speaker 2: who went to Syracuse, it did take away, and I
[34:45] Speaker 2: watched it and I will still watch it. It did
[34:47] Speaker 2: take away a little bit of the first Michigan Ohio
[34:51] Speaker 2: State game because it objectively matters less.
[34:56] Speaker 1: But it didn't take it away in the moment as
[34:59] Speaker 1: Michig was shocking them as a twenty point dog. It
[35:02] Speaker 1: didn't hurt. Then in retrospect you look back and go, well,
[35:06] Speaker 1: it doesn't feel as big. Well, that's like saying a
[35:08] Speaker 1: year after you got a Christmas present, I don't feel
[35:10] Speaker 1: the same today as I did a year ago when
[35:12] Speaker 1: I got the Christmas present.
[35:13] Speaker 2: No, I know, but I guess you take the lesson
[35:15] Speaker 2: and you go forward with it and you say there's good.
[35:19] Speaker 2: There is some like like the NFL has expanded the
[35:22] Speaker 2: playoffs right, easier to get in. We love the playoffs.
[35:25] Speaker 2: It's more football Week seventeen was terrible because most of
[35:32] Speaker 2: the teams were like, we're sitting guys, and team teams
[35:36] Speaker 2: have been a limitic and it's like, oh, well, what's
[35:38] Speaker 2: the difference between being the five seed and the sixth seed?
[35:41] Speaker 2: Like we're in, it doesn't matter. We're gonna still, we're
[35:44] Speaker 2: gonna sit guys, We're gonna play guys for a quarter.
[35:46] Speaker 2: So I think there is a trade off that comes
[35:50] Speaker 2: with more games and all that. And with college football. Listen,
[35:53] Speaker 2: I understood. I always was like more games I am
[35:56] Speaker 2: going to watch, and more big games, more big games
[36:00] Speaker 2: I am going to watch. But I had a hard
[36:04] Speaker 2: time with the college football. Argument for the expansion of
[36:06] Speaker 2: the playoffs was like, how many times in the BCS
[36:12] Speaker 2: era even did you feel like the fifth best team
[36:16] Speaker 2: in the country deserved a shot at.
[36:19] Speaker 1: Being the national champion. I didn't think that it existed.
[36:24] Speaker 2: And so if your argument is well, expand the tournament,
[36:27] Speaker 2: get them in, and then any given Sunday they can
[36:30] Speaker 2: or any given Saturday they can win it. That's fine,
[36:33] Speaker 2: but then it does take away a little bit of
[36:36] Speaker 2: the regular season to me. And again I will watch,
[36:39] Speaker 2: but I get My guess is as they keep expanding
[36:42] Speaker 2: this playoff, people will come away with it all. It'll
[36:47] Speaker 2: blend together and the Week six game is not going
[36:50] Speaker 2: to feel as big.
[36:52] Speaker 1: But in mid October, double the number of teams to
[36:59] Speaker 1: triple are still in the hunt for a fourteen game
[37:03] Speaker 1: playoff or a twelve game playoff. Where it used to
[37:06] Speaker 1: be if you lost a game in September, you lost
[37:09] Speaker 1: another when you were done, and so the last outs
[37:13] Speaker 1: of the season you're out and going to talk. Now,
[37:16] Speaker 1: Like Ohio State loses to Oregon, then they lose to Michigan,
[37:20] Speaker 1: You're like shit, oh, oh my god, Ryan Day's gonna
[37:24] Speaker 1: get fired if they lose to Tennessee. So the story
[37:27] Speaker 1: went from winning to Ryan Day's getting blought. Oh they
[37:30] Speaker 1: just blew up Tennessee. Well he better beat Oregon. Oh
[37:33] Speaker 1: they blew him out, Well they better beat So the
[37:35] Speaker 1: story changed from just the game to are they gonna
[37:38] Speaker 1: blow up Ryan Day's career, so to me, it pivoted
[37:41] Speaker 1: from Okay, Ohio State still gonna get in, but remember
[37:47] Speaker 1: the story before the Tennessee game, Ryan Day can't lose respired,
[37:50] Speaker 1: so there was a different drama. It wasn't and nobody
[37:54] Speaker 1: thought Ohio State, most people even in Columbus didn't think
[37:56] Speaker 1: they were gonna win on Natty. After losing the Michigan
[37:58] Speaker 1: people were like no, they were like going overboard. Yeah
[38:05] Speaker 1: they were.
[38:06] Speaker 2: It was insane and now you're gonna get games like
[38:10] Speaker 2: like Arizona State's gonna you know, they made it and
[38:13] Speaker 2: it was a nice story. And then the spread in
[38:16] Speaker 2: the game was like twenty points, right for a college
[38:19] Speaker 2: football playoff game. It does like it just it doesn't.
[38:23] Speaker 2: That part of it is gonna feel a little weird
[38:27] Speaker 2: to me because can they win, yes, but like what
[38:32] Speaker 2: was there any part of you that thought that Arizona
[38:35] Speaker 2: State could have gone on a run and won the
[38:38] Speaker 2: next jack No, no, but zero zero part of you.
[38:43] Speaker 2: So it felt a little bit like a waste of time.
[38:45] Speaker 1: Okay, but I think there's only five teams that can
[38:49] Speaker 1: win the Super Bowl next year going into the season. Yeah,
[38:52] Speaker 1: but that's just not true. That's just not true. Well,
[38:55] Speaker 1: Kansas City, Buffalo, Baltimore are just They've just got better players,
[38:59] Speaker 1: better coach. I think we both think Denver and the
[39:02] Speaker 1: Chargers are interesting, but bow Nick's hoisting a trophy seems rare.
[39:06] Speaker 1: We know Philadelphia is really really good, and McVeigh and
[39:09] Speaker 1: the Rams will be there, and then there'll be a
[39:12] Speaker 1: couple of really interesting teams. I don't think brock Kurdy
[39:15] Speaker 1: now with an older team and a shaky old line works.
[39:18] Speaker 1: But I've been arguing this for years. There's way less
[39:21] Speaker 1: parody in the NFL than everybody thinks. And the reason
[39:24] Speaker 1: I know that because for the second year in a row,
[39:26] Speaker 1: I can pick the division winners easily in the AFC,
[39:29] Speaker 1: and it's getting to the point picking division winners in
[39:32] Speaker 1: the NFL six of eight is not that difficult. Okay, but.
[39:38] Speaker 2: Do you think Washington could have won the Super Bowl
[39:40] Speaker 2: last year? No, there's always a shocking team. I had
[39:44] Speaker 2: picked the Rams the year before as the shocking team.
[39:46] Speaker 2: I picked, by the way last year, Washington and Denver
[39:50] Speaker 2: to be the shocking teams.
[39:51] Speaker 1: How did I do that? Well? Because I think they
[39:54] Speaker 1: were so poorly run with Dan Snyder that all the
[39:57] Speaker 1: new guys easy division wins against Dallas and the the Giants.
[40:00] Speaker 1: So I actually picked Washington and Denver to be much
[40:03] Speaker 1: better like this year. I think it's obvious New England
[40:05] Speaker 1: and Tennessee are going to double their win total. So
[40:08] Speaker 1: even the surprises are pretty I've done four years in
[40:12] Speaker 1: a row where I've picked the double your win team.
[40:14] Speaker 1: It's going to be New England this year, and and
[40:19] Speaker 1: Chicago see tennis it. So let's let's go to Chicaggles.
[40:24] Speaker 1: I I I don't I find the division very weird?
[40:32] Speaker 2: Oh listen, I mean we I I we could go,
[40:34] Speaker 2: we could do the.
[40:35] Speaker 1: Listen, we'll We'll do a lot of Bears at some
[40:37] Speaker 1: point before the year. Here's the thing, big advantage of
[40:40] Speaker 1: the Bears. Yeah, they got a lot better. JJ McCarthy,
[40:46] Speaker 1: you're going to see it very quickly. Is not what
[40:49] Speaker 1: people think. And the Lions lost both coordinators. So whereas
[40:54] Speaker 1: we look at the AFC West and go, god, that's
[40:57] Speaker 1: a good division, we say that about then have seen North.
[41:02] Speaker 1: We don't know about Jordan Love, We really don't. JJ
[41:06] Speaker 1: McCarthy is a c quarterback. You ever seen JJ McCarthy's
[41:09] Speaker 1: fourth quarter college stats and playing from behind fourth quarter
[41:13] Speaker 1: stats in college. With Michigan and Harbor on that old line,
[41:15] Speaker 1: they're terrible. Detroit's pulling back because they're O. Line in
[41:20] Speaker 1: the middle is a mess and they lost both coordinators.
[41:24] Speaker 1: That is a is a real bonus. That division, we
[41:28] Speaker 1: think is really well, it's well coached. I think the
[41:32] Speaker 1: Bears have an opportunity to win ten or eleven games.
[41:34] Speaker 1: I don't think it's as good a division as people think. Well,
[41:37] Speaker 1: then they would be a double ye win team.
[41:40] Speaker 2: They if they can, if they can get to double digits,
[41:42] Speaker 2: I mean, I think that having the level of coaching
[41:45] Speaker 2: in that division is just very.
[41:46] Speaker 1: Very very high.
[41:47] Speaker 2: And so I think that that makes the worst team
[41:51] Speaker 2: in that division.
[41:52] Speaker 1: Like, let's say you're right about JJ McCarthy, he still
[41:56] Speaker 1: is Kevin O'Connell, Jordan Addison, and Justin Jefferson.
[42:01] Speaker 2: Like they got Kirk Cousins to be near five thousand yards,
[42:06] Speaker 2: they got Sam Darnold one hundred million dollars. Like JJ
[42:09] Speaker 2: McCarthy doesn't need to be awesome in order for that
[42:12] Speaker 2: offense to be pretty good. And let's say Minnesota is
[42:15] Speaker 2: the worst team in the division this year. They won
[42:17] Speaker 2: fourteen games last year. It's it's it's a pretty good
[42:21] Speaker 2: worst team if that's what they are, or if the
[42:23] Speaker 2: Bears are the worst team in the division, that's a
[42:25] Speaker 2: pretty tough worst team. So like, even if they're not
[42:29] Speaker 2: top heavy dominant, I don't see there being any team
[42:32] Speaker 2: in that division that's just like straight up bad. There's
[42:35] Speaker 2: no Cleveland Browns in that division. You know, There's there's
[42:38] Speaker 2: no there's no Jets, there's no Giants, there's no push
[42:40] Speaker 2: over there. So I think that's what's going to make
[42:43] Speaker 2: it tough is that they each ste have to play
[42:44] Speaker 2: each other six times, and the team that does the
[42:46] Speaker 2: best in that division might go four and two.
[42:49] Speaker 1: You know, they might just beat each other up this year.
