First, he’s joined by Jason Timpf, host of “Hoops Tonight”. They begin by evaluating Luka Doncic’s first year as a Laker and debate whether his volatility and lack of effort on defense makes him a poor emotional leader for the team (2:00). Jason argues Luka really ISN’T the leader of the team, but his high ceiling, lower floor style of play makes for more unpredictable results on a night-to-night basis. Colin dives into the massive stylistic differences between regular season & playoff basketball and they agree that the Lakers are really only built for the regular season (11:30). They pivot to the Celtic’s “shoot 3’s and play your ass off defensively” strategy and debate how viable they’ll be in the playoffs and what to expect from the return of Jayson Tatum (17:30). Then, he’s joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out”. They start with the NFL Draft Combine & discuss the behind the scenes wheeling & dealing nature of the coaches and executives at the combine, and John’s experience speaking with legendary Seahawks GM John Schneider and what the defending champs will do with Super Bowl MVP running back Kenneth Walker (26:00). They debate whether there’s a market for Kyler Murray to have a second act and what teams may be interested (31:15), and what positions the Bears will look to solidify in the draft (34:00). [0:01] Speaker 1: The volume, all right, Jason timf and I all things
[0:13] Speaker 1: basketball for about the next thirty thirty five minutes. And
[0:16] Speaker 1: I was thinking about this today. So basketball has a
[0:21] Speaker 1: very unique place in our sports.
[0:27] Speaker 2: Consumption.
[0:28] Speaker 1: We wear a lot of people wear their favorite basketball
[0:32] Speaker 1: player because of shoes and a parent. We don't wear
[0:34] Speaker 1: our favorite hockey player unless you buy a stick or something.
[0:38] Speaker 1: We don't wear our favorite baseball player or favorite football player.
[0:41] Speaker 1: We're not around wearing cleats to work, or at least
[0:44] Speaker 1: shouldn't be. But in basketball, it's different. There's a loyalty
[0:47] Speaker 1: to your favorite basketball player because it's part of your beam.
[0:52] Speaker 1: And because of that, I think people are it's just
[0:57] Speaker 1: hard to let go. If you're a nick fan with
[0:59] Speaker 1: all his flaw, it's hard to let go of Carmelo.
[1:02] Speaker 1: He's your guy. It's not about like a baseball card.
[1:05] Speaker 1: It's like I got his shoes, you know, I've got
[1:08] Speaker 1: his apparel. And so I've always thought like basketball fans
[1:14] Speaker 1: are more loyal to their stars. I'm not talking teams.
[1:17] Speaker 1: Fans are all loyal to their teams, They're more loyal
[1:19] Speaker 1: to their stars. And I do wonder because as much
[1:24] Speaker 1: as you love the NBA, when somebody's on your team,
[1:27] Speaker 1: you see all the works and the flaws that you
[1:29] Speaker 1: don't see on the highlights or YouTube or when they
[1:32] Speaker 1: play your team. And now we're a year into Luca
[1:36] Speaker 1: and he's got more technicals than he does defensive stops.
[1:40] Speaker 1: I think he's at thirteen. I think he's at thirteen.
[1:43] Speaker 1: And I was saying this today on the show at
[1:44] Speaker 1: FS one is that of the twenty two Laker losses,
[1:49] Speaker 1: nineteen or blowouts and the team doesn't have a ton
[1:53] Speaker 1: of resilience when the going gets tough. Sometimes they just foold.
[1:58] Speaker 1: And I said, I'm not blaming Luca for everything, because
[2:01] Speaker 1: he's a gifted offensive player, but you do kind of
[2:05] Speaker 1: follow the lead of your guy. And even if Lebron
[2:11] Speaker 1: had a bad night, he played his ass off. I mean,
[2:13] Speaker 1: now is different. For fifteen years, Kobe MJ THEA had
[2:18] Speaker 1: bad shooting knights. They didn't have bad effort nights, or
[2:22] Speaker 1: bad commitment nights or bad focus nights. And when you
[2:25] Speaker 1: watch Luke on a nightly basis, do you think sometimes
[2:30] Speaker 1: when he kind of mails it into the wrong word,
[2:34] Speaker 1: he becomes a little dispassionate. They're down eleven, he gets
[2:37] Speaker 1: a bad call, he's barking at the ref the Celtics
[2:41] Speaker 1: are racing down to the other end of the floor.
[2:43] Speaker 1: Do you think part of that makes it hard for
[2:45] Speaker 1: him to be a true emotional leader, not talent, an
[2:50] Speaker 1: emotional bedrock player like a Duncan or an MJ for
[2:54] Speaker 1: a franchise or a d Wade.
[2:56] Speaker 3: Well, to put it very simply, I think if you
[2:57] Speaker 3: talk to anybody who covers the Lakers, who roots for
[3:00] Speaker 3: them or watches them very closely, Luca's not the emotional
[3:05] Speaker 3: leader of the team. It's never been really something that
[3:08] Speaker 3: he's particularly gifted at. He's very much a I lead
[3:11] Speaker 3: by snatching the other team's heart and hopefully everyone just
[3:14] Speaker 3: gets in line behind me kind of thing. And you know,
[3:17] Speaker 3: it's funny you mentioned the dynamic when you're rooting for somebody,
[3:20] Speaker 3: because I've experienced this directly. I mean, I cover the
[3:22] Speaker 3: league at large. I watched tons and tons of Luca
[3:25] Speaker 3: over the course of previous years. I'd almost deified him
[3:28] Speaker 3: in my head after those playoff performances in twenty twenty
[3:31] Speaker 3: four and in twenty twenty two, and then when he
[3:33] Speaker 3: came to the Lakers. It's not just watching him every day,
[3:37] Speaker 3: but also seeing as he's headed into this phase of
[3:39] Speaker 3: his career where he's declined a little bit physically, which
[3:42] Speaker 3: has kind of accentuated some of these awards. Doesn't have
[3:44] Speaker 3: as much burst going to the basket as he used
[3:47] Speaker 3: as he used to It's crazy you look back with
[3:49] Speaker 3: Luca towards his early career. He used to get a
[3:53] Speaker 3: dunk every couple weeks. Like now it's like he might
[3:55] Speaker 3: get one a season, you know what I mean, Like
[3:57] Speaker 3: there's a difference in the level of explosiveness.
[4:00] Speaker 1: He's twenty seven, isn't he.
[4:02] Speaker 3: I know, this should theoretically be the time when he's
[4:04] Speaker 3: peaking athletically, This should be when it's all kind of
[4:07] Speaker 3: coming together for him, and he has made some improvements
[4:09] Speaker 3: over last season when he was downright completely out of
[4:12] Speaker 3: shape for most of the season. But you know, the
[4:15] Speaker 3: big thing that stood out to me after covering him
[4:17] Speaker 3: very very closely over the last couple of seasons is
[4:19] Speaker 3: how different his floor is compared to the other stars
[4:22] Speaker 3: around the league.
[4:23] Speaker 2: I would actually.
[4:24] Speaker 3: Argue Luca's ceiling is the highest in the NBA, specifically
[4:30] Speaker 3: because he's got that step back three at his size,
[4:34] Speaker 3: which is basically unguardable and so you know, Nicole Jokic,
[4:38] Speaker 3: there's a certain like, you know, he's not a guy
[4:40] Speaker 3: that's gonna break you down off the dribble a ton.
[4:42] Speaker 3: You know, He's a guy that runs a lot of
[4:43] Speaker 3: two man game and works out of the post for
[4:45] Speaker 3: the most part. Shake yoss Alexander doesn't take a ton
[4:48] Speaker 3: of threes, and so those two guys are much more
[4:51] Speaker 3: reliable night tonight. But Luca has this like, oh, but
[4:54] Speaker 3: what if he goes eight for twelve on step back
[4:56] Speaker 3: threes kind of thing going on where he just becomes
[4:59] Speaker 3: borderline impossible to guard because it's got the efficiency of
[5:02] Speaker 3: step steph Curry with the unguardable step back three that
[5:05] Speaker 3: Luca has. Plus he's the short range shot maker that
[5:09] Speaker 3: Shay and Nikola Jokic are, and he's this unbelievable playmaker.
[5:13] Speaker 3: But when the step back three is not going in
[5:16] Speaker 3: for him, it just become a lot more dicey and
[5:20] Speaker 3: like to put it very frank, the difference between him
[5:24] Speaker 3: and Shae and him and Jokic at this point is
[5:27] Speaker 3: Luca is way more prone to bad games. And when
[5:31] Speaker 3: he has a bad game like last night, and last
[5:32] Speaker 3: night he was actually four for seven from three, but
[5:34] Speaker 3: on twos that were away from the rim but inside
[5:37] Speaker 3: the three point line, so the mid range stuff. He
[5:40] Speaker 3: was one for eleven, which he's typically very good at,
[5:43] Speaker 3: but wasn't going in last night. He doesn't have like
[5:46] Speaker 3: an alternative method to impact the game, and that makes
[5:48] Speaker 3: it really tough. Like Shae has this rim pressure element.
[5:52] Speaker 3: He's so good at beating people off the dribble that
[5:55] Speaker 3: raises his floor on a night to night basis nicolea
[5:57] Speaker 3: jokicch He operates within seven or feet from the basket,
[6:01] Speaker 3: so he just doesn't deal with the jump shooting variants
[6:03] Speaker 3: that a guy like Nikola Jokic does or that Luka
[6:06] Speaker 3: Dancic does. And then among all of the stars at
[6:08] Speaker 3: the top of the league, you can throw Ant in there,
[6:10] Speaker 3: you can throw Wemby in there, Jannis, Luka, Shay Jokic.
[6:14] Speaker 3: He's by far the worst defensive player in that group.
[6:17] Speaker 3: And so he's so dependent on his ceiling, and his
[6:21] Speaker 3: ceiling has such a high variance element to it that
[6:24] Speaker 3: it just makes him prone to bad nights. And you know,
[6:26] Speaker 3: I've been asked us a bunch like why is Luca Luca?
[6:28] Speaker 3: There was the big straw pole that came out with
[6:30] Speaker 3: ESPN where they go around and they ask all the
[6:32] Speaker 3: people have votes, and he came back fifth and MVP voting.
[6:35] Speaker 3: And so, to put it very simply, this is gonna
[6:38] Speaker 3: be like the fourth consecutive year where we went into
[6:40] Speaker 3: training camp and we're like, Luca's gonna get MVP. This
[6:42] Speaker 3: is the year, and it's like, actually, no shot, like
[6:46] Speaker 3: literally no shot. And until he fixes his floor, until
[6:49] Speaker 3: he becomes a player that does enough things consistently well
[6:52] Speaker 3: night tonight that he doesn't have those kinds of bad games,
[6:55] Speaker 3: he's never gonna be able to compete with the guys
[6:57] Speaker 3: at the very top.
[6:58] Speaker 2: Of the league. Yeah.
[7:00] Speaker 1: Yeah, it's just I like him, and I think he's
[7:03] Speaker 1: a remarkable player. But I do think the first thing
[7:08] Speaker 1: you said is he is now a more academic player
[7:14] Speaker 1: than athletic player, and he is twenty seven. Lebron slowed
[7:19] Speaker 1: down at thirty nine and a half. I mean, honestly,
[7:24] Speaker 1: Brady could have still played last year. Like at twenty seven,
[7:29] Speaker 1: he's starting to break down. And that goes to my
[7:32] Speaker 1: mellow comp which is Carmelo's last all NBA season was
[7:36] Speaker 1: twenty eight.
[7:37] Speaker 2: That's like, that's it, that's.
[7:40] Speaker 1: It, And That's why I always said, like Dwayne Wade
[7:43] Speaker 1: doesn't have nearly the offensive elegance or ceiling of Luca,
[7:49] Speaker 1: but man did he squeeze every ounceide of that He
[7:51] Speaker 1: looked like a running back. Like he just there was
[7:55] Speaker 1: like they always say, like alcohol ages you, and in
[7:57] Speaker 1: the NBA getting in the weight room and really grinding
[8:03] Speaker 1: ext extension. Jordan was great every morning. I mean, Lebron
[8:08] Speaker 1: James to this day is a weight room warrior. I
[8:11] Speaker 1: covered Rashid Wallace. He would pay the fine before the season,
[8:15] Speaker 1: like I'm not gonna go to the weight room. Rashid
[8:18] Speaker 1: was great, good over. And so you know, I was
[8:24] Speaker 1: watching Oklahoma City yesterday. They were missing four starters, four
[8:29] Speaker 1: really high end players, and they still beat Cleveland, a
[8:32] Speaker 1: top seed in the East. And I say this about
[8:37] Speaker 1: the Lakers, and I don't want to go all Lakers here.
[8:40] Speaker 2: But.
[8:43] Speaker 1: Regular season football and postseason football is largely the same.
[8:47] Speaker 1: The weather gets worse, but you have to be able
[8:50] Speaker 1: to run the football. You have to be a fishing
[8:53] Speaker 1: in the red zone, win the turnover battle. Coaching matters
[8:56] Speaker 1: postseason baseball. Regular season baseball need good star charting, pitching,
[9:00] Speaker 1: one good closer situational hitting, can't be bad. Defensively, don't
[9:04] Speaker 1: have to be great, can't be bad. NBA is different
[9:08] Speaker 1: the NBA. The regular season is not the postseason. First
[9:13] Speaker 1: of all, the postseason becomes much more situational and getting
[9:16] Speaker 1: baskets and buckets matters more than the high volume of threes.
[9:20] Speaker 1: Right Like in the regular season, the math is shoot threes, defend,
[9:24] Speaker 1: You're gonna win a lot of games. And so I
[9:26] Speaker 1: think the Lakers are a little bit of fools gold.
[9:29] Speaker 1: I think they're built for the regular season. I think
[9:31] Speaker 1: if they walk into town, you're not rested. Austin, Lebron,
[9:34] Speaker 1: Luca can really be a handful, especially if like Austin's hitting.
[9:38] Speaker 1: It's like, oh shit, okay, now we have our hands full.
[9:43] Speaker 1: But if I can play you five times, we're equally arrested,
[9:46] Speaker 1: and I can hunt Luca or Harden or Austin. It's
[9:51] Speaker 1: a different it's a different team. Last year Minnesota did this.
[9:54] Speaker 1: Remember we went into that series thinking it's gonna be
[9:56] Speaker 1: a six game series and you watch it and you're like,
[9:59] Speaker 1: this the match, do you see this where this Laker team?
[10:06] Speaker 1: It can be elegant and beautiful. The spacing's good, I
[10:10] Speaker 1: think Reddick's a really good offensive coach in close games.
[10:13] Speaker 1: The clutch numbers, I think are still remain very good.
[10:16] Speaker 1: But they are not built for the playoffs.
[10:19] Speaker 2: They are they are.
[10:20] Speaker 1: They have no bench, I mean not that bench is everything.
[10:23] Speaker 1: They don't have a great bench. They don't protect the rim,
[10:26] Speaker 1: they don't have This as well documented athletic Wings, is
[10:30] Speaker 1: that we're people in Los Angeles. They're gonna get a
[10:34] Speaker 1: They're gonna be a four seed in the West, but
[10:36] Speaker 1: they're not really a true four seed. They're like the
[10:38] Speaker 1: Miami Dolphins when they made the playoffs with TUA. Nobody
[10:41] Speaker 1: thought they're gonna go up north in the cold and
[10:43] Speaker 1: win a playoff game. It's like they have no chance
[10:45] Speaker 1: to do that. The Lakers really have no chance for
[10:47] Speaker 1: the depth of OKC, the defense of Oklahoma City facing Jokics,
[10:52] Speaker 1: they really have no chance against those teams in a
[10:54] Speaker 1: long series or am I totally off?
[10:56] Speaker 3: No, you're I mean, did you're You're in line with
[10:59] Speaker 3: the consensus. I think like the metrics that come out
[11:02] Speaker 3: from this Lakers team make them stick out like a
[11:05] Speaker 3: sore thumb among the other good teams in the league.
[11:08] Speaker 3: And it really comes down to that dynamic you're talking about.
[11:11] Speaker 3: The Lakers are great at one thing, half court offense.
[11:16] Speaker 2: They're the third.
[11:16] Speaker 3: Best in the league, behind Denver and Oklahoma City, and
[11:19] Speaker 3: it's because they have these unbelievable shot creators that can
[11:23] Speaker 3: go nuclear in any given night. But that is a
[11:25] Speaker 3: large sample size trend. It is an issue like the
[11:30] Speaker 3: offense did not look good last night against Boston, And
[11:32] Speaker 3: really the problem when you look at this Lakers team
[11:35] Speaker 3: is they have chewed up and spit out every bad
[11:38] Speaker 3: team in the league and that has carried their record.
[11:40] Speaker 3: So here are some crazy stats free con the Lakers
[11:43] Speaker 3: this season. When they play teams in the bottom ten
[11:45] Speaker 3: in point differential, they're eighteen and two, which is tied
[11:49] Speaker 3: with Oklahoma City for the best in the entire NBA.
[11:52] Speaker 3: That means they're sixteen and twenty against the rest of
[11:54] Speaker 3: the league, So they are below five hundred against anybody
[11:58] Speaker 3: that's not in the bottom third of the NBA. Even
[12:01] Speaker 3: as you zoom individually in on it, just against the
[12:04] Speaker 3: top ten teams in point differential, they are getting outscored
[12:08] Speaker 3: by thirteen points per game, which ranks twenty eighth in
[12:11] Speaker 3: the NBA only the Wizards, and that Brooklyn Nets team
[12:15] Speaker 3: have been worse when they're playing the good teams. It's
[12:17] Speaker 3: funny if you look at all the teams just in
[12:20] Speaker 3: their games against the top ten teams in the league.
[12:23] Speaker 3: So just erase all the filler games in the schedule
[12:25] Speaker 3: and just look at the benchmarks, test just the measuring sticks.
[12:30] Speaker 3: The top nine teams are all the teams you'd expect
[12:34] Speaker 3: to see among contenders. Detroit's number one, Minnesota's number two,
[12:37] Speaker 3: they're always They've been my sneaky championship contender this season.
[12:40] Speaker 3: I love them. Oklahoma City, Houston, San Antonio, Boston, Cleveland,
[12:45] Speaker 3: New York, and Denver. That's the top nine, that's what
[12:47] Speaker 3: you would expect to see. And then it's all the
[12:50] Speaker 3: way down to number twenty eight is the Lakers. Like
[12:52] Speaker 3: that's literally what you're talking about with this team. They
[12:54] Speaker 3: have been consistently outclassed in these matchups. And the reason
[12:58] Speaker 3: why is there is a clear game plan for how
[13:01] Speaker 3: to beat the Lakers, and all of the good teams
[13:04] Speaker 3: understand this game plan and they execute it well. Number One,
[13:08] Speaker 3: ball pressure. If you pick the Lakers up full court,
[13:11] Speaker 3: you'll wear them down. Boston did this all night last night,
[13:13] Speaker 3: even on every possession. They didn't pick up Luca. You
[13:16] Speaker 3: see Missoula yelling and screaming and pointing like pick them up,
[13:19] Speaker 3: pick them up, like they just they want to pick
[13:21] Speaker 3: up full court the entire game. Why the Lakers allowed
[13:24] Speaker 3: nineteen points off of turnovers per game. That's the seventh
[13:26] Speaker 3: most in the entire NBA. If you pick them up
[13:28] Speaker 3: full court, you'll turn them over, you'll get out in
[13:30] Speaker 3: transition two deep drop coverage. Boston did this last night.
[13:33] Speaker 3: Just have Vucevic, Animi Kata sit way back at the basket,
[13:37] Speaker 3: chase Luca and Austin off the three point line, and
[13:39] Speaker 3: funnel them into the rim. It allows you to stay
[13:41] Speaker 3: home off the ball and force them to take all
[13:43] Speaker 3: of those tough contested twos. That's where Luca is always
[13:46] Speaker 3: trying to draw foulsand stuff. Their offense can fall apart
[13:50] Speaker 3: in that sense. That's a big part of why the
[13:52] Speaker 3: Lakers can't get quality three point shots up that specific
[13:54] Speaker 3: defensive look and then lastly run on them like crazy
[13:57] Speaker 3: cleaning the glass. Has this catch all metric they for
[14:00] Speaker 3: transition defense. They call it transition points added per one
[14:03] Speaker 3: hundred possessions. The Lakers literally rank dead last in that
[14:07] Speaker 3: stat against their against teams in the top ten and
[14:11] Speaker 3: point differential. So pick them up full court, run on
[14:13] Speaker 3: them all day, run that deep drop coverage. You're not
[14:16] Speaker 3: just gonna beat the Lakers. You're gonna make them quit
[14:18] Speaker 3: and blow them out by twenty. It is a consistent
[14:21] Speaker 3: game plan that we have seen all season long from
[14:24] Speaker 3: the good teams against the Lakers, and they just fall
[14:26] Speaker 3: apart in that play style. And so honestly, like when
[14:29] Speaker 3: you see something over and over and over and over again,
[14:31] Speaker 3: and like last night was another chance they could have
[14:33] Speaker 3: beat Boston and changed the narrative a little bit. Nope,
[14:36] Speaker 3: the exact same damn thing happened again, and that just
[14:39] Speaker 3: keeps happening all season. And when you're that bad against
[14:42] Speaker 3: the good teams, when all of the other good teams
[14:44] Speaker 3: are good against the good teams, that's a giant red
[14:47] Speaker 3: flag for your hopes in this case.
[14:49] Speaker 1: You know, it's interesting. I'm watching the Celtics, and when
[14:53] Speaker 1: you watch the Celtic, I mean they got three guys
[14:55] Speaker 1: that ninety percent of the league. You know, they got
[14:57] Speaker 1: some Sam hawsers now playing big minutes. They got three
[15:00] Speaker 1: eyes that like don't have NBA resumes that anybody outside
[15:02] Speaker 1: of Boston knows. But I will tell you that I
[15:06] Speaker 1: thought they'd be fine without Jason Tatum. I did not
[15:09] Speaker 1: think they'd be this good defensively without him, and they're
[15:12] Speaker 1: not quite as good offensively without him, which makes sense.
[15:16] Speaker 1: But when I said I don't think he's face of
[15:18] Speaker 1: the league, it was mostly an aura thing. It wasn't
[15:20] Speaker 1: a game thing. I think it's games good. I mean,
[15:21] Speaker 1: he's a really, really high end player. Are you surprised
[15:24] Speaker 1: though they're eight and two in their last ten, their
[15:27] Speaker 1: defensive metrics are excellent. I mean, basically, Chris bru Sarge
[15:31] Speaker 1: said at the end of my show, they have two rules,
[15:33] Speaker 1: shoot threes and player ass off defensively. Like that's it.
[15:36] Speaker 1: It's very simple, like play hard on the defensive end
[15:39] Speaker 1: and shoot threes. Are you surprised they are still a
[15:43] Speaker 1: I think Detroit probably wins the East, but they're still viable.
[15:47] Speaker 1: They're playing well. They haven't dropped off a ton offensively.
[15:51] Speaker 1: I mean Porzingis has gone to trade, Drew Holliday's gone,
[15:53] Speaker 1: Tatum's out, and you're like, no, they're okay, They're fine.
[15:57] Speaker 1: It's the same kind of team. They're not quite as athletic.
[16:00] Speaker 3: Are you surprised, I think everyone's surprised that they're as
[16:03] Speaker 3: good as they have been. I think that I think
[16:07] Speaker 3: most of us expected them to be just kind of
[16:09] Speaker 3: a middle team in the East, like in that five
[16:11] Speaker 3: to eight range, like win more games than you'd think.
[16:13] Speaker 3: But like, I think both Indiana and Boston have been
[16:17] Speaker 3: shocking in opposite directions. Like we all thought Boston and
[16:20] Speaker 3: Indiana would be kind of in the middle. Indiana went
[16:22] Speaker 3: completely into the tank and Boston is still competing for
[16:25] Speaker 3: a championship. And honestly, if it wasn't for JB. Bickerstaff
[16:28] Speaker 3: having a really clear Coach of the Year case just
[16:30] Speaker 3: because of how good the Pistons would have been, Joe
[16:33] Speaker 3: Miszula is an awesome Coach of the Year candidate because
[16:35] Speaker 3: I think this season has been a testament to the
[16:37] Speaker 3: basketball culture that he's built. Again, you're in the mid
[16:41] Speaker 3: second quarter, you're beating up on the Lakers like you're
[16:44] Speaker 3: dominating the game. You've been doing your job all night long.
[16:47] Speaker 3: In one time, someone didn't pick up Lucas He's dribbling
[16:50] Speaker 3: in front of the Celtics beench and you could see
[16:52] Speaker 3: Joe demonstratively like yelling at his guys to get over
[16:55] Speaker 3: there and pick him up. There is an accountability that
[16:59] Speaker 3: he has established with this group. Yes, where this is
[17:01] Speaker 3: the expectation. If you're gonna play for me, this is
[17:04] Speaker 3: what you've got to do. And it goes even deeper
[17:06] Speaker 3: than the ball pressure, Like they crash out of the
[17:07] Speaker 3: corners so well, this is a team that you would
[17:09] Speaker 3: have thought would have tanked as a rebounding team because
[17:12] Speaker 3: you lose Tatum and you lose your entire center rotation. No,
[17:15] Speaker 3: they win the rebound battle. They win the second chance
[17:17] Speaker 3: points battle every night because their guards are so scrappy
[17:21] Speaker 3: coming out of the corners getting offensive rebounds. And then
[17:24] Speaker 3: the last thing that I think is super impressive with
[17:26] Speaker 3: Boston Colin they lost Drew Holliday, Jason Tatum, Al Horford,
[17:30] Speaker 3: and Christops Porzingish and they have a one to twenty
[17:33] Speaker 3: offensive rating, their second best offense in the NBA. And
[17:36] Speaker 3: I think that's where, like, honestly for all to talk
[17:38] Speaker 3: about Joe Mizula's offense, and then like hunting threes, Joe
[17:42] Speaker 3: Mizzoula never said take bad threes. He wanted to run
[17:45] Speaker 3: quality offense for good looks from three and what's happening
[17:49] Speaker 3: is over the years they've gotten better and better at
[17:52] Speaker 3: running his system. And even though those guys are all
[17:55] Speaker 3: out of the lineup, Howsard's been there a long time,
[17:57] Speaker 3: Pritchard's been there a long time, Derek White's been there
[18:00] Speaker 3: a long time, Jalen Brown's been there a long time.
[18:02] Speaker 3: Even Kid has been there for a few years now,
[18:04] Speaker 3: and so there's some continuity in this system. They know
[18:08] Speaker 3: how they want to play, and so honestly, like if
[18:10] Speaker 3: you look at the strongest basketball cultures in the NBA,
[18:14] Speaker 3: Boston has clearly demonstrated this year that they are one
[18:16] Speaker 3: of those teams. And as far as their chances this
[18:19] Speaker 3: year goes, I viewed Detroit, New York, Boston, and Cleveland
[18:23] Speaker 3: all kind of in the same tier. I lean very
[18:26] Speaker 3: slightly Cleveland because I just think they're a very complete
[18:28] Speaker 3: team after the trades they made, not just Harden but
[18:31] Speaker 3: the other deals they made at the deadline. But Boston
[18:33] Speaker 3: absolutely has a shot to come out of the East.
[18:35] Speaker 3: And I mean it really just comes down how good
[18:37] Speaker 3: Tatum is when he comes back. If he comes back
[18:39] Speaker 3: and he's all NBA Tatum, they have a big experience advantage.
[18:43] Speaker 3: They have a big continuity advantage. Those guys have been
[18:45] Speaker 3: in so many big games.
[18:46] Speaker 1: Do we know exactly when he's coming back?
[18:48] Speaker 2: Do we know for sure?
[18:50] Speaker 3: The rumor is like early March, so I would assume,
[18:53] Speaker 3: like I mean, I mean, he was photographed practicing with
[18:56] Speaker 3: the team literally just a couple of days ago. He's
[18:58] Speaker 3: already been doing five on five for I think a
[19:01] Speaker 3: couple of weeks now, So I think we're like a
[19:03] Speaker 3: week or two out from him coming back, and like
[19:05] Speaker 3: he addresses a very specific need because the one thing
[19:08] Speaker 3: they don't really have is a big forward because Jalen
[19:11] Speaker 3: Brown is very much a three. And then they have
[19:14] Speaker 3: these like role player forwards, you know, guys like Jordan
[19:16] Speaker 3: Walsh that can play a little bit, but it's like
[19:18] Speaker 3: they don't have like a big, strong forward that's really
[19:22] Speaker 3: switchy and can defensive rebound and stuff. Like if you
[19:24] Speaker 3: remember when Boston won the title, the way they won
[19:26] Speaker 3: the title is Tatum guarded the other team center every
[19:29] Speaker 3: single game. They don't really have that right now. If
[19:31] Speaker 3: Tatum can come back and provide all of those elements,
[19:34] Speaker 3: and really just the big thing I'd worry about is
[19:37] Speaker 3: him janking up the offense just because it's a weird
[19:39] Speaker 3: rhythm thing to add a new player like that, but
[19:41] Speaker 3: as yeah, if he can fit in.

[21:26] Speaker 1: All Right, I thought i'd bring in former NFL scout
[21:29] Speaker 1: John Middlecoff three and out, who spent a couple of
[21:31] Speaker 1: days at the Combine, and it's real deal making for
[21:37] Speaker 1: the three days people are in the executives are in Indianapolis.
[21:42] Speaker 1: It is a lot of nate late nights, John, can
[21:45] Speaker 1: you confirm that it's late nights and early mornings?
[21:48] Speaker 2: Yeah, it was. It was a lot Colin. These guys
[21:53] Speaker 2: are letting it rip. You know, in fairness, it's not
[21:56] Speaker 2: a normal life day lead, especially the coaches. The six
[21:59] Speaker 2: months you get to the combine, which by all accounts
[22:02] Speaker 2: is tamed down dramatically from where it was. I think,
[22:05] Speaker 2: free cell phones, it's nothing too crazy, but I mean
[22:08] Speaker 2: it's it's an event, unlike I mean, you have every
[22:12] Speaker 2: NFL head coach out to dinner, out to cocktails, out
[22:16] Speaker 2: with each other, every GM, every assistant GM. Think about
[22:20] Speaker 2: all the coordinators now that used to be head coaches
[22:23] Speaker 2: that are pretty famous. Walking around Indianapolis isn't exactly London.
[22:27] Speaker 2: I mean there's not that many places to go, so
[22:30] Speaker 2: safe to say that JW. Marriott is is ripping every night.
[22:36] Speaker 2: So I had to get out of their colum because
[22:38] Speaker 2: I couldn't last more than forty eight hours.
[22:40] Speaker 1: Let's talk first, John Snyder. I saw you sat down
[22:43] Speaker 1: with him the Seattle GM. I think he's being now
[22:47] Speaker 1: fairly regarded as maybe the best drafting GM in the league.
[22:51] Speaker 1: There's a lot of different skills. There's free agency, there's trading.
[22:54] Speaker 1: Howie Rosen's probably the most aggressive. I don't think you
[22:58] Speaker 1: can deny that John Snyder's the best draft GM. If
[23:00] Speaker 1: you look at his track record or really since Pete
[23:02] Speaker 1: left and he completely absolutely took over the entire draft.
[23:07] Speaker 1: But he's got some tough decisions to make. Kenneth Walker
[23:11] Speaker 1: is you know there's going to be a market for
[23:13] Speaker 1: Kenneth Walker. Teams like Kansas City in the AFC need
[23:16] Speaker 1: a running back and it's a bad running back draft.
[23:18] Speaker 1: But give me your kind of sense of how John's
[23:21] Speaker 1: feeling and the kind of the crest he's kind of
[23:23] Speaker 1: riding now.
[23:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think his personality feels the same whether he
[23:29] Speaker 2: won the Super Bowl or whether you would see him
[23:32] Speaker 2: when they would get bounced in the first round. Yeah,
[23:34] Speaker 2: obviously he's pretty a lady. He'd come into this to
[23:37] Speaker 2: this combine. One thing he mentioned is he's because they
[23:40] Speaker 2: just went I mean they were playing two weeks ago.
[23:42] Speaker 2: He's behind on the draft. He's spent all of his
[23:44] Speaker 2: energy getting ready for free agency. They have a ton
[23:47] Speaker 2: of money. I personally would probably let Kenneth Walker walk. Yeah,
[23:52] Speaker 2: unless it's a relatively i mean two years, fifteen million
[23:55] Speaker 2: dollars or something. But when you start bidding for a
[23:57] Speaker 2: running back. They drafted him in the second round, but
[24:00] Speaker 2: up until the second half of this year, he's kind
[24:02] Speaker 2: of had an underwhelming career, and you bring in Flurry
[24:06] Speaker 2: from the Niners, who the Kubiak Shanahan system, you can
[24:09] Speaker 2: kind of find running backs. So my guess would be
[24:13] Speaker 2: they're definitely not franchise tagging him. Like whenever I see
[24:16] Speaker 2: the Jets are going to franchise tag Breise Hall, it's
[24:19] Speaker 2: like the Jets are going to franchise tag a running back.
[24:21] Speaker 2: Not even the Jets would do that. Come on, guys, right,
[24:25] Speaker 2: let's use some common sense here. So Seattle's riding high.
[24:28] Speaker 2: I got to meet Mike McDonald and talk to him.
[24:31] Speaker 2: He's really really impressive. I mean, they got they got
[24:35] Speaker 2: something pretty special going in Seattle because they have a
[24:38] Speaker 2: ton of caps base, they have a ton of young
[24:40] Speaker 2: players under contract that there. I would say they're confidence
[24:44] Speaker 2: in Sam the person. I mean, you've talked about this.
[24:47] Speaker 2: You know clearly the player, like most players not named
[24:51] Speaker 2: John Elway or Peyton Manning aren't going to be great
[24:53] Speaker 2: ninety nine percent of games. But I think they are
[24:56] Speaker 2: all in on the human being. And I think what
[24:59] Speaker 2: they learned down that's wretch that Thursday night game against
[25:01] Speaker 2: the Rams when he flipped it, and then up until
[25:03] Speaker 2: the Super Bowl. They're doing pretty confident in their quarterback.
[25:08] Speaker 1: What's also interesting now is because there's so many good
[25:14] Speaker 1: offensive coaches that you are seeing quarterbacks like Baker and
[25:18] Speaker 1: Donald have a second life if you can land your
[25:22] Speaker 1: Liam Cohen.
[25:22] Speaker 2: I mean, Trevor.
[25:23] Speaker 1: Lawrence made a big leap this year. And I think
[25:26] Speaker 1: you know, these guys off the Sean McVay tree, the
[25:29] Speaker 1: Kyle Shanahan tree. You know, they go places and they
[25:33] Speaker 1: change the arc of quarterbacks careers. Sam Darnold bust to
[25:37] Speaker 1: star to Super Bowl champion. Baker Mayfield, you know, resurrected
[25:42] Speaker 1: his dip. Kyler Murray and two are different to it.
[25:46] Speaker 1: Can't stay healthy and is really limited physically. Kyler as
[25:50] Speaker 1: a story out this week, he hasn't talked to the GMS.
[25:53] Speaker 1: It's the end of the season, so he's not terribly verbal.
[25:56] Speaker 1: Their commission, commitment issues, their health issues. And even though
[26:00] Speaker 1: we're in a league now where you do get second
[26:04] Speaker 1: teams and second runs, you know Arizona, Well, does Kyler
[26:10] Speaker 1: have a market? I mean, there is such bad p R.
[26:15] Speaker 2: Someone told me this week that Kyler Murray in his
[26:18] Speaker 2: camp they want to go to Minnesota. Well, Aaron Rodgers
[26:22] Speaker 2: wanted to go to Minnesota too. Most quarterbacks do. I
[26:26] Speaker 2: can't imagine Kevin O'Connell wanting Kyler Murray. Kyler Murray is
[26:30] Speaker 2: at the point if he truly wants to resurrect his career.
[26:34] Speaker 2: He's made a ton of money at this point, right
[26:36] Speaker 2: number one overall pick got this huge deal that is
[26:39] Speaker 2: now in Albatross. Makes him untradable if he gets cut,
[26:43] Speaker 2: which he's going to, why not surely you know the Ravens,
[26:47] Speaker 2: the chief one of those type teams would be like, hey,
[26:49] Speaker 2: we'll take you for the veteran minimum. If Andy Reid
[26:52] Speaker 2: calls or something, you would be crazy not to make
[26:56] Speaker 2: a decision to go there and potentially maybe rehab your
[27:00] Speaker 2: image because he does have a branding problem right now.
[27:03] Speaker 2: I would say throughout the league he's not viewed very
[27:05] Speaker 2: highly as a player on or off the field. Not
[27:08] Speaker 2: like bad like some of these guys to get in trouble,
[27:10] Speaker 2: but just yeah, we don't want to deal with that.
[27:12] Speaker 2: That's I would say the number one thing you hear
[27:15] Speaker 2: talking to these guys, Yeah, we got to deal with
[27:17] Speaker 2: this with our defensive lineman. You've talked about this forever.
[27:19] Speaker 2: When we white they do not want to deal with
[27:21] Speaker 2: the quarterback room. I mean the quarterback room. Better be
[27:24] Speaker 2: like your coaches, better be like your executives, just high
[27:27] Speaker 2: level professionals. I never even think about you. I have
[27:30] Speaker 2: to deal with immaturity in some other positions, not to
[27:33] Speaker 2: quarterback position. Imagine if you just go to Andy Reid
[27:35] Speaker 2: for a year. You know, Kevin Sam Darnold did this,
[27:39] Speaker 2: Daniel Jones kind of did this when he got cut
[27:41] Speaker 2: by the Giants and just rehab his image and then
[27:44] Speaker 2: by the end of the year, maybe a play. Maybe
[27:46] Speaker 2: you don't. But you have an Andy Reid type guy,
[27:48] Speaker 2: and I'm just using him as example. You could see
[27:50] Speaker 2: Sean Payne, he could use whoever would be interested. That's
[27:52] Speaker 2: established and go, we love that guy. That was a
[27:55] Speaker 2: great experience being around him. Then that changes the arc
[27:58] Speaker 2: of the way the league thinks about you, because being
[28:01] Speaker 2: there that the league is one. It's like a high school.
[28:04] Speaker 2: Everyone knows everybody, and everybody talks to everybody, and you
[28:08] Speaker 2: could probably play one degree of separation. You just put
[28:10] Speaker 2: Mike Silver in the middle. He he knows everything. They
[28:13] Speaker 2: all know each other and all the information on what
[28:15] Speaker 2: a guy is and isn't as a person you know,
[28:19] Speaker 2: one thing, one of my big takeaways is we can
[28:22] Speaker 2: get into draft. Why this pick makes it, Why this
[28:25] Speaker 2: free agency or you know, guy didn't work this. This
[28:30] Speaker 2: is a people business, and the teams that are good
[28:33] Speaker 2: have just really high level people right on the coaching staff.
[28:37] Speaker 2: I mean, I hear some stories colin about position coaches
[28:41] Speaker 2: making millions of dollars that get titles stripped in the
[28:44] Speaker 2: middle of the season and throw a hissy fit and
[28:47] Speaker 2: won't go to meetings. It's not just the players. These
[28:49] Speaker 2: assistant coaches egos are enormous. Now You've got a lot
[28:54] Speaker 2: of personalities, and the best teams are just I hear
[28:58] Speaker 2: stories about Kellen Moore or Kooby You're like, I see
[29:01] Speaker 2: why these guys are having success. Just easy to deal with.
[29:03] Speaker 2: High level guys, get along, high eques, you know, and
[29:07] Speaker 2: clearly you know the league has kind of been defined
[29:11] Speaker 2: of you need a few crazies on your team, but
[29:13] Speaker 2: you better have a high character operation from a football
[29:16] Speaker 2: character standpoint, or you got no shot.
[29:19] Speaker 1: Ben Johnson and Mike Vrabel turned it around in one year.
[29:24] Speaker 1: I saw that you ran into Ben Johnson. I mean,
[29:27] Speaker 1: he's got to be They have a really interesting situation
[29:30] Speaker 1: where they know exactly what they need. They need some
[29:33] Speaker 1: help in the linebacker corp. They're not fast enough and
[29:36] Speaker 1: they need a rush end. But I mean they've really
[29:38] Speaker 1: john They could literally use every draft pick on defense.
[29:41] Speaker 1: They don't have a whole offensively, maybe another tackle in
[29:44] Speaker 1: the building, but receiver, tight end, back, quarterback, interior, old line,
[29:49] Speaker 1: they're really good. I mean, was Ben walking on Cloud
[29:53] Speaker 1: nine in a pretty pretty good mood.
[29:55] Speaker 2: Well, I use you because sometimes you know, it's easy
[29:57] Speaker 2: if you know the guy to start a conversation. When
[30:00] Speaker 2: you don't, you got you gotta come with a little material.
[30:02] Speaker 2: So I had you in my back pocket. I dropped
[30:05] Speaker 2: your name early and he said that he'd seen you,
[30:07] Speaker 2: he thought at a restaurant. And I said, Ben, I
[30:11] Speaker 2: can't believe you didn't go talk to him. You guys
[30:13] Speaker 2: would have been breaking down offensive football. He started laughing,
[30:16] Speaker 2: and people are like, I'd never see Ben Johnson smile.
[30:18] Speaker 2: I'm like, well, I got that magic touch because I
[30:20] Speaker 2: used you, and uh left to link you up the Bears.
[30:25] Speaker 2: I talked to Ryot Poles. You know, they feel like
[30:27] Speaker 2: they got a pretty good those two guys. You know,
[30:32] Speaker 2: Ryan had some bumps early.
[30:33] Speaker 1: He did in personnel moviell thing didn't work, But receivers
[30:37] Speaker 1: are a hard acquisition. It's just a tough position. Then
[30:41] Speaker 1: he redeemed himself with a DJ More deal.
[30:44] Speaker 2: And as a GM, you look way better with a
[30:48] Speaker 2: good coach, I mean, you just do. So now you
[30:51] Speaker 2: get a guy who I mean, I think one thing
[30:54] Speaker 2: you beat at this Combine the the status of Ben
[30:58] Speaker 2: Johnson and Mike mcdonn Ronald in a twelve month span,
[31:02] Speaker 2: Like if you would have been there last year to
[31:03] Speaker 2: where they are this year, it just couldn't be any higher.
[31:06] Speaker 2: The way they're thought of in terms of coaching on
[31:08] Speaker 2: the field is extremely high. And I would expect DJ
[31:14] Speaker 2: Moore is going to be a name that we're going
[31:15] Speaker 2: to see over the next week potent because they're going
[31:17] Speaker 2: to have to move an offensive piece. They don't have
[31:19] Speaker 2: many draft picks, you know, to kind of retool this thing.
[31:23] Speaker 2: And that they're letting one of their linebackers I saw
[31:26] Speaker 2: seek a trade. The other thing is that division. You know,
[31:30] Speaker 2: I make fun of the Vikings because of their quarterback situation,
[31:32] Speaker 2: as most people do. We talk about the Lions taking
[31:35] Speaker 2: a big step back. Both those teams went nine to eight.
[31:38] Speaker 2: I mean both those teams, the Vikings and the Lions
[31:41] Speaker 2: are pretty well established culture with really good players. Their
[31:45] Speaker 2: floor is extremely high. And if the Packers just can
[31:49] Speaker 2: keep some guys healthy, clearly they're one of the best
[31:52] Speaker 2: teams in the league. So that division from the Bear
[31:54] Speaker 2: standpoint is really really difficult. And the Bears, who have
[31:57] Speaker 2: been atrocious, now we're going to get a first play schedule.
[31:59] Speaker 2: It is going to be more challenging and they're gonna
[32:03] Speaker 2: sneak up on nobody, which when you see Ben, he's
[32:06] Speaker 2: wired for that. Like, I don't think he's He's not
[32:08] Speaker 2: resting on his laurels. He is. You could just tell
[32:12] Speaker 2: a lot by the way guys carry themselves, you know,
[32:14] Speaker 2: the Hardball brothers or very Bowl like they're so comfortable
[32:17] Speaker 2: in their own skin. But some of these new guys,
[32:19] Speaker 2: the new found fame, like might when Ben Johnson walks
[32:23] Speaker 2: in somewhere, he's really famous now, and to me, he
[32:26] Speaker 2: just carries himself like he looks exact same as he
[32:29] Speaker 2: carried himself a year ago. And I would say the
[32:32] Speaker 2: same thing with Mike McDonald. Their personality like this, the
[32:35] Speaker 2: no ego. I was talking to him last night and
[32:37] Speaker 2: just going this guy won a Super Bowl like three
[32:39] Speaker 2: weeks ago, and you would you would never know if
[32:43] Speaker 2: you brought some guy off the street. They didn't know football.
[32:45] Speaker 2: You just met this guy, you would have no clue
[32:47] Speaker 2: that this guy is the Super Bowl champion and the
[32:50] Speaker 2: toast of the town right now in the NFL. So
[32:53] Speaker 2: I would feel pretty confident if I'm the Bears. But
[32:55] Speaker 2: they do like there are a lot of because the
[32:58] Speaker 2: cap is so big right now. Yeah, there are so
[33:01] Speaker 2: many options with trades. And I talked to Howie about
[33:03] Speaker 2: this when I first started working for Howie in twenty ten.
[33:07] Speaker 2: He was on the forefront of the NFL forever. Wasn't
[33:10] Speaker 2: that trade heavy? Oh?
[33:12] Speaker 1: God, No, Before the Jimmy Johnson trade, the herschel Walker
[33:15] Speaker 1: teams didn't trade.
[33:17] Speaker 2: Yeah, the historic trades stand out so much like the
[33:21] Speaker 2: eighties and nineties because they didn't happen that much. Howie
[33:24] Speaker 2: was ready to trade like an NBA Major League Baseball GM,
[33:28] Speaker 2: but the rest of the league wasn't. And then now
[33:32] Speaker 2: you fast forward fifteen plus years in the mid twenty twenties,
[33:36] Speaker 2: all these gms or the majority of them are kind
[33:38] Speaker 2: of like him. They're ready to trade. So people are
[33:41] Speaker 2: willing to Hey, you want this guy, you want to
[33:42] Speaker 2: trade draft picks, you want to do this. So there
[33:44] Speaker 2: is just a lot of action, which I think stalls
[33:47] Speaker 2: some deals because it gets so expensive. It's like a house.
[33:50] Speaker 2: If you only have one guy bitten on the house,
[33:53] Speaker 2: you know you probably can dictate the terms a little bit.
[33:55] Speaker 2: You got seven people waiting out on the front of
[33:58] Speaker 2: the street to buy the house, that that price is
[34:01] Speaker 2: gonna skyrocket, And I think that happens with some of
[34:03] Speaker 2: these deals. I've been saying this about Max Crosby, Like, uh,
[34:06] Speaker 2: Breer told me, He's like, I don't think they're gonna
[34:08] Speaker 2: get two ones. I'm like, well, he's under contract, and
[34:11] Speaker 2: there would be minimum five high level playoff teams who
[34:16] Speaker 2: would be bidding on them. So yeah, in theory, you'd
[34:18] Speaker 2: be like a one to a two. Well, if five
[34:20] Speaker 2: teams are bidding against each other, Like the reason the
[34:23] Speaker 2: McCaffrey went for a two to three and a four
[34:26] Speaker 2: is because the Rams also wanted them, so the Niners
[34:28] Speaker 2: had to put it in a little bit more just the
[34:29] Speaker 2: way it works. So that's where I think that historically
[34:32] Speaker 2: twenty years ago, Yeah, Max Crosby probably just goes for
[34:34] Speaker 2: a one. Yeah, but Now you have all these gms
[34:37] Speaker 2: so good teams that are lined up to wheel and
[34:40] Speaker 2: deal and that's cool. Like you're there. This is a
[34:42] Speaker 2: wheeler and a dealer league. This is a This is
[34:44] Speaker 2: a league where you know these the John Schneider types
[34:48] Speaker 2: that you gotta be great at identifying personnel. You gotta
[34:52] Speaker 2: be dynamic wheeling the deal. You gotta be willing to
[34:54] Speaker 2: make moves. It is much more I would say complicated.
[34:57] Speaker 2: Now you got all the money, you gotta be lean
[34:59] Speaker 2: on your se callery cap guy. It's a pretty intense environment.
[35:02] Speaker 2: When you're there, you just realize the pressure cooker of
[35:05] Speaker 2: this thing. I mean, I'm watching Aaron Glenn do a
[35:07] Speaker 2: press conference. I'm like, God, I wouldn't want to be
[35:09] Speaker 2: that guy right now he's got anythink it, Like, get
[35:12] Speaker 2: me out of here. I mean, this is even beach.
[35:15] Speaker 2: You know you can just say there's just a wait
[35:17] Speaker 2: to all this stuff. I mean, this is this is
[35:19] Speaker 2: a long, intense week because it lays the foundation for
[35:21] Speaker 2: next week where that you know that tampering period. It's
[35:25] Speaker 2: just full go and these durozenhouse. These guys around, just
[35:28] Speaker 2: do a deal and get moving.
