[1:19] Speaker 1: So obviously the trade is historically significant. I do remember
[1:27] Speaker 1: where I was when Powell Gasol was traded from Memphis
[1:31] Speaker 1: to the Lakers, a window seat flying to Mexico on
[1:38] Speaker 1: a plane and thinking, this almost doesn't sound real. How
[1:42] Speaker 1: do you get Powell Gasol for what the Lakers surrendered?
[1:45] Speaker 1: This has even greater significance, But I was trying to
[1:49] Speaker 1: make sense of it this morning. Obviously Dallas initiated the
[1:52] Speaker 1: call because they wanted to move on, or it feels
[1:57] Speaker 1: like if the Lakers initiated it, Dallas would have gotten
[2:01] Speaker 1: more right. One first round pick Anthony Davis. I mean,
[2:06] Speaker 1: that's that's the guts the deal. So why would Dallas
[2:11] Speaker 1: do it? Well, the Addison family, Miriam Addison is the
[2:14] Speaker 1: new owner. They may see the world differently. You have
[2:17] Speaker 1: an NBA with stars load management, You know, like the
[2:23] Speaker 1: guy that shows up every night is Lebron James, right,
[2:26] Speaker 1: that's old school. I mean Lebron's dropping one of his
[2:30] Speaker 1: better games of the year at Madison Square Garden. Hell
[2:33] Speaker 1: is he forty almost? Lebron feels very old school. And
[2:39] Speaker 1: a lot of current stars what you look for. Am
[2:44] Speaker 1: I going to get seventy seventy two games a year?
[2:47] Speaker 1: And you look at Luca who missed all of training
[2:51] Speaker 1: camp this year, I think most of it last year,
[2:53] Speaker 1: hasn't played since Christmas. And the new owners are staring
[2:56] Speaker 1: down the barrel of a three hundred and fifty million
[2:58] Speaker 1: dollar max extension, which is minimum four years, and they're
[3:02] Speaker 1: looking at it thinking, you know, I don't know how
[3:05] Speaker 1: much NBA knowledge the Adamsons have, but the people in
[3:08] Speaker 1: the building are looking around and thinking, I remember three
[3:12] Speaker 1: years ago, and this was said regularly. You know, Embiid
[3:16] Speaker 1: is going to be championships. He's the next Shack, He's
[3:18] Speaker 1: the Shack comp And there were some injuries but nothing
[3:21] Speaker 1: to worry about. And he was kind of gifted at
[3:24] Speaker 1: MVP when Jokic probably deserved his third trade. And Embiid
[3:28] Speaker 1: now won't play back to backs, and so you look
[3:31] Speaker 1: at Lukadanvic, I wouldn't have made the trade. But if
[3:36] Speaker 1: you give me three firsts and Anthony Davis and another player,
[3:40] Speaker 1: it makes more sense to me. He's playing about sixty
[3:44] Speaker 1: five games a year. Is that ever going to become more?
[3:48] Speaker 1: That's what I'm getting now. And he's young, he's in
[3:51] Speaker 1: his prime. Hasn't played since Christmas, been out of the
[3:54] Speaker 1: last two training camps, conditioning concerns. And the Lakers are like,
[4:00] Speaker 1: you know, last two years, Anthony Davis arguably best defender
[4:03] Speaker 1: in the league. You put him with PJ. Washington, Kyrie Irving.
[4:07] Speaker 1: You know, you start looking around at that team and
[4:09] Speaker 1: you're like, for the short term, Dallas won the deal.
[4:12] Speaker 1: Dallas can compete now to me for an NBA championship.
[4:15] Speaker 1: I mean that's I mean, they're a five hundred team.
[4:17] Speaker 1: Now you get eighty percent of Luca's offense when he's playing,
[4:21] Speaker 1: but you get much better defense, a remp protective and
[4:24] Speaker 1: a great scorer. So short term, you know, Dallas has
[4:28] Speaker 1: a roster that can compete with anybody. Short term, the
[4:31] Speaker 1: Lakers don't. They'll be one of the worst defensive teams
[4:34] Speaker 1: in the league. Now they have got to go get
[4:35] Speaker 1: a big, and they won't get a great one. So
[4:39] Speaker 1: I mean, that's the only way I can fathom you'd
[4:41] Speaker 1: make this deal. But clearly it feels like Dallas initiates
[4:45] Speaker 1: the deal. Otherwise you just get more in return. And again,
[4:48] Speaker 1: you know there is no NFL comp for this. I
[4:51] Speaker 1: was thinking this morning. I was thinking about, like, let's
[4:52] Speaker 1: say Joe Burrow, who's great, an offensive machine like Luca,
[4:57] Speaker 1: has had some injuries, more than one. Never a condition issue,
[5:00] Speaker 1: but had some injuries. And let's say you were staring
[5:03] Speaker 1: down the barrel of a three hundred and fifty million
[5:05] Speaker 1: dollar extension, and you say to yourself, well, I can
[5:10] Speaker 1: get a couple of I can get two or three
[5:14] Speaker 1: firsts another great player. That is not a move I
[5:19] Speaker 1: would make either. But I get why the calls are
[5:23] Speaker 1: made on injuries. You know, these windows are short to
[5:28] Speaker 1: get a great player in their prime, even for quarterbacks.
[5:30] Speaker 1: I mean, Brady's the exception. I can see them looking
[5:35] Speaker 1: at Luca and just saying, we have four years minimum.
[5:38] Speaker 1: He's missing training camps, he doesn't come in great shape
[5:41] Speaker 1: to begin with. He doesn't give you even seventy games
[5:47] Speaker 1: in Western Conference finals a couple of years ago. I
[5:50] Speaker 1: think it was twenty twenty two. He missed three games
[5:52] Speaker 1: in that and so you try to rationalize it, and
[5:55] Speaker 1: they just got tired of it. Obviously, this is something
[5:58] Speaker 1: that's been brewing inside the back bricks for a long time.
[6:02] Speaker 1: They didn't do this on a whim. It does feel
[6:05] Speaker 1: with the trade deadline coming, there is a little panicky
[6:08] Speaker 1: feel to it, but that's the only reason that makes sense.
[6:13] Speaker 1: They just looked at injuries, conditioning, new owners. You know,
[6:19] Speaker 1: load management's becoming something. I think a lot of owners.
[6:22] Speaker 1: Mark Cuban sold a big percentage of this. They set
[6:25] Speaker 1: it for real estate, but I think Mark, the smartest
[6:28] Speaker 1: people have ever known or met, tend to sell early
[6:32] Speaker 1: before late. Maybe Cuban didn't like to feel maybe it
[6:36] Speaker 1: was for a state planning, but in real estate, in
[6:40] Speaker 1: terms of the Lakers, you have to make this move.
[6:43] Speaker 1: Haven't we talked about this for years? Is that you know,
[6:47] Speaker 1: Lebron pretty much felt like he ran the franchise and
[6:50] Speaker 1: they're going to draft Brownie. Everything kind of runs through Brownie,
[6:55] Speaker 1: and according to multiple sources this morning, Brian Windhorst, I
[6:59] Speaker 1: trust brown He did not know about the move. Dave
[7:02] Speaker 1: mcmanimun echoed that Lebron James did not know about the move. Now,
[7:06] Speaker 1: is that Lebron posturing? So Anthony Davis doesn't think he
[7:08] Speaker 1: got rid of him. I don't know. I'm just going
[7:12] Speaker 1: to trust NBA reporters who have boots on the ground.
[7:16] Speaker 1: But it does feel like a clear shift. JJ Reddick
[7:18] Speaker 1: and Luca are the future of the franchise. I don't
[7:20] Speaker 1: think the Lakers are going to be a great team
[7:21] Speaker 1: this year. They're playing very well now, but playing well
[7:24] Speaker 1: in the NBA in January and February just does not
[7:27] Speaker 1: resonate later. You know, a lot of teams play hard
[7:30] Speaker 1: and play well now. It's a it's a late April,
[7:34] Speaker 1: May and June league. So I think when I look
[7:38] Speaker 1: at this move, I look at the Lakers, and I
[7:40] Speaker 1: think long term, they got a star in his prime
[7:44] Speaker 1: who's got like six more great years left, and that's
[7:48] Speaker 1: what they need. I mean, it does feel like, you know,
[7:51] Speaker 1: Lebron's sort of been pulling this franchise around, and you know,
[7:55] Speaker 1: Ads like, we need another big. I don't want to
[7:57] Speaker 1: play a five, I want to play a four. He's
[7:59] Speaker 1: allowed to out do that more to Dallas. So it's
[8:01] Speaker 1: a good fit for Ad and it's a good short
[8:03] Speaker 1: term fit. I mean, if you told me right now,
[8:05] Speaker 1: a d give you two more totally healthy years. I
[8:08] Speaker 1: think Dallas can compete for a championship for the next
[8:10] Speaker 1: two years. I think Luca Lebron and a mediocre rim
[8:14] Speaker 1: protector doesn't feel like a championship team to me. Let
[8:17] Speaker 1: me throw this out there though, because I think the
[8:20] Speaker 1: Lakers ended up getting, you know, their future, and I
[8:23] Speaker 1: think Ad is out of his prime maybe a little,
[8:26] Speaker 1: but not far out of it? Is that Anthony Davis
[8:30] Speaker 1: when he came to LA, you know, people used to
[8:32] Speaker 1: joke he was a dad bod. His conditioning was okay,
[8:36] Speaker 1: he wouldn't play through injuries. I mean, I remember talking
[8:40] Speaker 1: to an NBA executive and Jerry West, the late Jerry West,
[8:44] Speaker 1: had voiced concerns about is he going to play through injuries.
[8:46] Speaker 1: It's a long season. He's a big it pounds on
[8:49] Speaker 1: your body. They were concerns brownlike NBA from you know, executives,
[8:54] Speaker 1: about his durability and his willingness to play banged up,
[8:57] Speaker 1: which you have to in pro sports at some point.
[9:00] Speaker 1: And boy, the last couple of years being around Lebron,
[9:05] Speaker 1: the LA lifestyle is different. You know, I'm sorry, but
[9:08] Speaker 1: it just is. You know, I always joke with my
[9:10] Speaker 1: wife when I'm in Chicago or I'm out East, I
[9:12] Speaker 1: eat differently. You know. LA lifestyle is a thing. You're
[9:17] Speaker 1: in the Staples Center, It's glamorous. Lebron is, you know,
[9:23] Speaker 1: uber dedicated, and it felt like Lebron had a real
[9:27] Speaker 1: effect on eighties body conditioning, work, ethic and dedication. Could
[9:32] Speaker 1: Lebron have that with Luca? I think potentially. I think
[9:36] Speaker 1: Lebron's incredibly He's the greatest basketball player many people believe.
[9:40] Speaker 1: Ever Lebron's level of dedication and ability to smartly, not manipulate,
[9:48] Speaker 1: but move things in his direction. He's a convincing player, manager,
[9:56] Speaker 1: slash coach, all those hats he wears. Those would you
[10:00] Speaker 1: get the best of Luca for about a five to
[10:02] Speaker 1: a six game, you know, or however long Lebron plays.
[10:05] Speaker 1: I mean, you watch Lebron against the Knicks. Lebron's got
[10:09] Speaker 1: more good years left. But it does feel like to
[10:12] Speaker 1: me that JJ Reddick and Luca are kind of the future.
[10:16] Speaker 1: You're going to keep Lebron. He'll probably stay around LA.
[10:19] Speaker 1: His business is doing well in Los Angeles. But the
[10:23] Speaker 1: fact that they didn't have to give up a second
[10:25] Speaker 1: first round pick. Feels like a huge win for the Lakers.
[10:28] Speaker 1: Not a win, but a huge win and they get
[10:31] Speaker 1: their superstar for the future, and it never felt like
[10:33] Speaker 1: that with Lebron or a D eighty's a great player.
[10:36] Speaker 1: I don't think he doesn't feel necessarily like a Kobe
[10:40] Speaker 1: or a Magic or a Lebron. He's more in the
[10:43] Speaker 1: Kareem mode where you know he's a big he can
[10:46] Speaker 1: be kind of stoic, nice guy, but you know, the
[10:50] Speaker 1: Lakers stars have always felt big personalities, big or a
[10:55] Speaker 1: kind of iconic. That's Lebron, and Luca has a bit
[10:59] Speaker 1: of that feel because he's a prolific score. So it's strange.
[11:05] Speaker 1: I think Dallas needed to get more. This was clearly
[11:09] Speaker 1: something that had been in the works for a while
[11:11] Speaker 1: and proving once again, if people don't want things out,
[11:15] Speaker 1: it doesn't get out. I've said this for years. Stories
[11:19] Speaker 1: get out to somebody wants them out. When you see
[11:22] Speaker 1: big moves like historic moves Tom Brady to Tampa that
[11:26] Speaker 1: didn't happen in the last hour, right like that thing
[11:29] Speaker 1: had been discussed, it doesn't get out right, it doesn't
[11:33] Speaker 1: get out. This didn't get out, so you know who
[11:38] Speaker 1: won the trade. Short term, I think Dallas is going
[11:40] Speaker 1: to be a really really good basketball team with the
[11:44] Speaker 1: size to match up with anybody, the experience to match
[11:48] Speaker 1: up with anybody, the toughness. Eighty is a tremendous player
[11:52] Speaker 1: and has had a great two years. I thought he
[11:54] Speaker 1: should have won the Defensive Player of the Year last year.
[11:57] Speaker 1: It's just a tremendous player who I think. It has
[12:00] Speaker 1: to be noted Lebron has had a real effect on
[12:03] Speaker 1: his conditioning, his intensity, his toughness, his consistency, no doubt,
[12:08] Speaker 1: and I think Lebron gonna have that same effect on Luca.
[12:12] Speaker 1: I think he can. I mean those last two training camps,
[12:15] Speaker 1: where's Luca? Hasn't played since December? Where's Luca? You know?
[12:20] Speaker 1: And for years I have said that I think Luca
[12:22] Speaker 1: is a much better version of Carmelo Anthony. Conditioning's average
[12:27] Speaker 1: kind of has a style that he's not going to
[12:29] Speaker 1: bend for anybody. Don't know that he necessarily always elevates
[12:34] Speaker 1: other teammates to their highest level. You know, he's just
[12:39] Speaker 1: got his own game. He's like the sun and everything
[12:41] Speaker 1: sort of rotates around it. And I always thought that
[12:45] Speaker 1: was kind of mellow, also mellow, and Luca very poor defensively,
[12:49] Speaker 1: you know, not really engaged like you prefer on the
[12:52] Speaker 1: defensive end. But I think Luca's and both Hall of
[12:56] Speaker 1: Fame first ballot guys, but I think Lucas got a
[12:58] Speaker 1: little bit of that in him. But I just think
[13:01] Speaker 1: Lucas better And I think Los Angeles can change people.
[13:06] Speaker 1: It can change how Luca views his brand. It's just different.
[13:11] Speaker 1: It's different than Dallas. It's different from big cities. It's
[13:13] Speaker 1: different from Philly. It's different from Chicago. The lifestyle, the diet,
[13:18] Speaker 1: being around the bron the Laker image. I mean, Dallas
[13:21] Speaker 1: is a football down. You can argue La is an
[13:25] Speaker 1: MBA in a baseball city, Dodgers Lakers. So long term,
[13:30] Speaker 1: I like it for the Lakers. Short term, I really
[13:32] Speaker 1: like it for Dallas. Dallas is going to be a handful.
[13:35] Speaker 1: They are going to be a handful. I mean, Kyrie
[13:38] Speaker 1: backcourt ad front court, allowed to play the four that
[13:43] Speaker 1: he likes to And it wouldn't shock me at all
[13:46] Speaker 1: of the Mavericks got to the Western Conference finals and
[13:50] Speaker 1: one would it shock you eighties given you twenty eight
[13:54] Speaker 1: dominating the rim. You know, Kyrie's on the outside, Klay
[13:58] Speaker 1: Thompson aasionally from the angle, and you look up and
[14:02] Speaker 1: Dallas is in the finals. Wouldn't surprise me at all.
[14:05] Speaker 1: I mean, okay, see still feels kind of young. I mean,
[14:08] Speaker 1: Denver no longer plays defense. I don't know what's happened
[14:11] Speaker 1: to Denver's defense, but they don't play it much anymore.
[14:14] Speaker 1: So short term, Dallas is going to be really fun
[14:17] Speaker 1: to watch. And I had Adam Silver on the NBA
[14:19] Speaker 1: commissioner on my show, I don't know, it's it three
[14:21] Speaker 1: weeks ago, a month ago, and one of the things
[14:23] Speaker 1: we talked about, as I said, is the NBA feels
[14:27] Speaker 1: a little concerned about trades and about the possibility of
[14:32] Speaker 1: it being uneven in the league. And my take is
[14:36] Speaker 1: trades are great. I mean, I can't wait to watch
[14:38] Speaker 1: Luca as a Laker. I can't wait to watch the
[14:41] Speaker 1: Dallas Mavericks. I'm a huge believer in trades. I mean,
[14:44] Speaker 1: thing about last night. I wake up this morning, I
[14:46] Speaker 1: went to bed pretty early last night. I wake up
[14:49] Speaker 1: this morning and my phone's blown up. I got fifteen tag,
[14:54] Speaker 1: I got people at the volume. Can you come in?
[14:56] Speaker 1: You come on and do twenty thirty minutes. Yes, they
[15:01] Speaker 1: weren't doing that two days ago. So I think trades
[15:04] Speaker 1: are great. It's just amazing. If you'd have told me
[15:09] Speaker 1: a day ago you can get Luca from the Mavericks
[15:12] Speaker 1: for Anthony Davis and a first round pick? What Anthony Davis,
[15:19] Speaker 1: Austin Reeves and three first round picks? I would have bought?
[15:24] Speaker 1: That feels like maybe Austin Reeves is too good a player.
[15:27] Speaker 1: Anthony Davis. Now Anthony Davis, three first round picks and
[15:32] Speaker 1: somebody else of note for the Lakers, although they don't
[15:36] Speaker 1: have a lot of note players, right Dalton connect, maybe
[15:41] Speaker 1: three first rounders Dalton connect Anthony Davis. Then it feels interesting.
[15:47] Speaker 1: But I mean we could be looking up at this
[15:49] Speaker 1: thing in about three years agoing the hell of the Mavericks,
[15:52] Speaker 1: what do they do? But my guess is that Anthony
[15:55] Speaker 1: Davis stays pretty healthy and committed, and you're going to
[15:58] Speaker 1: have a two year run here where Dallas can play
[16:00] Speaker 1: absolutely anybody. I mean, what if the Mavericks get to
[16:03] Speaker 1: the finals, and what if the Lakers are so baded
[16:05] Speaker 1: defensively they face Dallas in the first round and get
[16:09] Speaker 1: washed out. I mean, that's what's so fun about this trade.
[16:12] Speaker 1: There's so many potential finishes, there's so many potential results.
[16:20] Speaker 1: It's just in year one, so I'm fired up for
[16:23] Speaker 1: the
[16:27] Speaker 2: Volume
