Colin is joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” to break down all the week 12 NFL action. They start with the Cowboys overcoming a 21-0 deficit to beat the Eagles on a walk off field goal and they highlight the Eagles inability to run the ball as a massive problem for the defending champs. They argue that Jerry Jones HAS to extend the contract for George Pickens after another dominant performance and credit Dak Prescott’s leadership (3:00). They move to Shedeur Sanders making his first start in a game where the Browns dominated the Raiders, and believe he showed enough to get the next start at quarterback (25:00). Colin puts the blame on Daniel Jones for the Colts blowing a late game lead to the Chiefs and Patrick Mahomes, and believes the Chiefs will still make the playoffs despite their 6-5 record (30:45). They move to the Bears beating the Aaron Rodgers-less Steelers and Colin argues that Caleb Williams isn’t a great fit for Ben Johnson’s system, but they’re finding ways to make it work and have cleaned up a lot of the mistakes (38:30). They recap the Packers win over the Vikings and they declare that J.J. McCarthy has proven he is NOT an NFL caliber starting quarterback and made a huge mistake moving off of Sam Darnold (54:00). They break down the Seahawks win over the Titans and highlight the incredible play of JSN at wide receiver for Seattle (1:00:30), and Colin calls the Lions victory over the Giants a “bad win” and that the Lions defense will sink them despite a great offense (1:05:00). Finally, they pivot to college football and Colin explains why USC can’t ever win big games and why Lincoln Riley deserves the blame (1:17:45). They also speculate on the future of Ole Miss coach Lane Kiffin (1:27:45). All lines provided by hardrock.bet (Timestamps may vary based on advertisements.) [0:56] Speaker 1: to pick your fantasy team. All right, let's start. It
[1:04] Speaker 1: is a Sunday. John Middlecoff, former NFL scout three and out.
[1:10] Speaker 1: We got a lot to talk about. We are starting
[1:13] Speaker 1: with the Cowboys wild come from behind twenty four twenty
[1:19] Speaker 1: one win over the Eagles. It was so lobsided in
[1:24] Speaker 1: the first half it had a collegiate feel in the
[1:27] Speaker 1: second half, leading twenty one to nothing with no ability
[1:31] Speaker 1: to run the ball. The second half possessions for the
[1:34] Speaker 1: Eagles John were punt, punt, punt, punt, miss field goal, fumble,
[1:40] Speaker 1: punt return, fumble punt. It really comes down to it.
[1:45] Speaker 1: It's not a Jalen Hurts thing necessarily. They can't run
[1:50] Speaker 1: the ball at all, is my first takeaway.
[1:54] Speaker 2: I don't see how the game starts and he is
[1:56] Speaker 2: just slinging that thing to aj Brown and you're like, Okay, Lacks.
[2:00] Speaker 2: The Cowboys short week about to melt down. It's gonna
[2:04] Speaker 2: be weird. Eagles win this thing. What thirty one to
[2:07] Speaker 2: ten or something? Yeah, yeah, it just and then all
[2:10] Speaker 2: of a sudden, the Cowboys scored at the end of
[2:12] Speaker 2: the first half. But even at twenty one to seven,
[2:14] Speaker 2: I had no imagination to go, you know what, the
[2:18] Speaker 2: Eagles are gonna do nothing in the second half because
[2:20] Speaker 2: they had looked so good throwing the ball, yes, And
[2:23] Speaker 2: it's one thing, like you know, you've talked about this,
[2:25] Speaker 2: forcing the ball to aj it just in the flow
[2:27] Speaker 2: a just look, it just looked natural. It looked like
[2:30] Speaker 2: you did at times over the course of the last
[2:32] Speaker 2: couple of years. But then to have that stretch, I mean,
[2:35] Speaker 2: if you're the Eagles, they've had a lot of these
[2:38] Speaker 2: where they start the game like that and then it
[2:40] Speaker 2: kind of gets a little bit better as the game
[2:42] Speaker 2: when you start the game as well as they did,
[2:44] Speaker 2: scoring a bunch of touchdowns, and then all of a sudden,
[2:46] Speaker 2: the second half is as anemic as that. On the
[2:49] Speaker 2: to the Cowboys, that one's tough, Colin. That's a devastating
[2:53] Speaker 2: meltdown for the Eagles, I mean devastating. Here's the thing
[2:56] Speaker 2: with the Cowboys. Dak is confident against Philadelphia history, right,
[3:00] Speaker 2: and they have some fire. I mean George Pickens massive day,
[3:04] Speaker 2: CD's playing like crap and they're still coming back on you.
[3:06] Speaker 2: That's the one thing. It's not like both those guys
[3:08] Speaker 2: are going for one hundred and fifty yards. He's seeds
[3:11] Speaker 2: dropping balls left and right. That this is gonna test
[3:13] Speaker 2: Nick Sirianni. These next couple nights, Colin. They got a
[3:16] Speaker 2: big game.
[3:16] Speaker 1: On Friday, the Chicago Bears. Yeah, right, and they're coming
[3:21] Speaker 1: off now. It's almost feels like because this game is
[3:24] Speaker 1: so late, it's like a short week Friday, and the
[3:27] Speaker 1: Bears are feeling great about themselves. Yeah. I mean they
[3:30] Speaker 1: had they had two fourth corner journal version, they missed
[3:33] Speaker 1: the field goal. So George Pickens, by the way, we
[3:36] Speaker 1: can say what we want about Jerry Jones. Demarvin over
[3:39] Speaker 1: shown that Texas linebacker who is now healthy. He's a
[3:42] Speaker 1: really good player. I think he was a third round pick,
[3:45] Speaker 1: second or third round pick. I think it was second second.
[3:48] Speaker 1: He is a really good player now. He tore his
[3:51] Speaker 1: ACL a couple of years ago. He was the kid
[3:53] Speaker 1: out of Texas. Tons of talent. Quentin Williams. Nice pickup.
[3:57] Speaker 1: Didn't do a ton today. George Pickens and absolute that's
[4:01] Speaker 1: the fourth game for Pickens this year with Dallas. The
[4:04] Speaker 1: fourth game with one hundred and I remember you got
[4:06] Speaker 1: Ceedee Lamb on the other side, and they're running the
[4:09] Speaker 1: ball this year. Fourth game with one hundred and thirty
[4:11] Speaker 1: plus receiving yards. Steelers have done that zero times this
[4:14] Speaker 1: season with Aaron Rodgers so I think it is easy
[4:19] Speaker 1: to lampoon Jerry. But they have hit. They have hit
[4:24] Speaker 1: on some draft picks. This offensive line doesn't pass block
[4:28] Speaker 1: as well as they run block. To this point, they're young,
[4:31] Speaker 1: they're inexpensive. But Pickens, I mean, I think we felt
[4:34] Speaker 1: this going into the game. Didn't Pickens just earn himself
[4:37] Speaker 1: a three year deal in Dallas?
[4:39] Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean if I was Jerry, I try to
[4:41] Speaker 2: extend him right now. You know, Jerry likes to wait
[4:43] Speaker 2: till the last second.
[4:44] Speaker 1: Though.
[4:44] Speaker 2: That is Jerry likes to hold that money in that
[4:46] Speaker 2: money market fund or wherever he's keeping this cash because
[4:49] Speaker 2: he does not like to pay guys early. But there
[4:51] Speaker 2: is no way at this point in time you can
[4:54] Speaker 2: let George go. I would say this Colin who in
[4:56] Speaker 2: a million years. At the start of the season, the
[4:59] Speaker 2: negative they got not the two to our own horn.
[5:02] Speaker 2: But I would say universally everyone was like, how could
[5:04] Speaker 2: you get rid of Micah Parsons? Like you guys were
[5:06] Speaker 2: winning nothing with Micah. They get a couple first round
[5:09] Speaker 2: picks and then people are like, wow, you're trading for
[5:11] Speaker 2: Quinn Williams. What are you guys doing? He has their
[5:14] Speaker 2: defensive tackle play looks dramatically better. Oh, I mean totally different.
[5:18] Speaker 2: It just split like the Red Seed before. These two guys,
[5:21] Speaker 2: especially once you put Quinn with Kenny Clark. Listen, Yeah,
[5:24] Speaker 2: could they use you know, some edge rush power. Well,
[5:27] Speaker 2: they got two first round picks. They're gonna have some
[5:29] Speaker 2: extra cap space because of getting rid of Mica. Now
[5:32] Speaker 2: they might have to use that on George Pickens, but
[5:34] Speaker 2: they really these last two games, right, they've played two
[5:37] Speaker 2: games now and what six nights he has twenty catches
[5:41] Speaker 2: for one hundred or two hundred and ninety yards and
[5:43] Speaker 2: two touch. George Pickens has been as good as any
[5:46] Speaker 2: player in the NFL at skill you know, at wide receiver,
[5:49] Speaker 2: tied end or running back.
[5:50] Speaker 1: And Logan Wilson, who they brought now is getting tackles
[5:53] Speaker 1: because Quinn Williams and Kenny Clark are eating up their men.
[5:56] Speaker 1: So Quinn didn't have a ton of prediction Kenny and
[5:58] Speaker 1: Quinnen didn't have a ton ofduceuction today. But what they
[6:01] Speaker 1: do is they force you to use multiple players to
[6:05] Speaker 1: block Quinn Williams, freeing up Logan Wilson and overshown. So
[6:10] Speaker 1: what you're watching with Dallas and your eyes aren't deceiving you.
[6:14] Speaker 1: They're athletic. Without my caparsons, this is a very athletic
[6:18] Speaker 1: defense now that it's healthy. And I said this the
[6:21] Speaker 1: brilliance of Jerry giving up a first round pick, but
[6:24] Speaker 1: not next year, the following year, as he knows this
[6:27] Speaker 1: is supposed to be the big quarterback year and doesn't
[6:30] Speaker 1: he doesn't need one. So the Rams don't necessarily have
[6:34] Speaker 1: to draft it with their two firsts, but they probably
[6:37] Speaker 1: should because of Stafford's age. They'll probably use the second
[6:40] Speaker 1: pick to get like a Seller's out of South Carolina,
[6:43] Speaker 1: a late first. They move into the second. Dallas doesn't
[6:46] Speaker 1: need quarterback what they I mean they could. I've looked
[6:48] Speaker 1: at mock drafts edge rusher Caleb Downs. I mean, can
[6:52] Speaker 1: you imagine that? So when everybody crushed, sometimes trades work
[6:59] Speaker 1: for both people. Green Bay's a team that was leading
[7:01] Speaker 1: games in the fourth quarter. They needed their Mariano Rivera.
[7:06] Speaker 1: They needed a closer. That's Micah and green Bay and Halfley.
[7:09] Speaker 1: They're generating a real pass rush. JJ McCarthy saw today.
[7:12] Speaker 1: Dallas wasn't leading games. Dallas was struggling. Dallas could not
[7:16] Speaker 1: defend the run. At the start of the season, so
[7:19] Speaker 1: since the start of the season, Kenny Clark, Quinton Williams.
[7:21] Speaker 1: You watched them today against Phladelphia. Philadelphia couldn't do anything.
[7:23] Speaker 2: On the ground. I also think, you know, by twenty
[7:26] Speaker 2: twenty seven, Jerry's going to be like ninety years old.
[7:29] Speaker 2: So by the time that first rounder becomes a good player,
[7:31] Speaker 2: I mean, Jerry's like I might not even be around.
[7:33] Speaker 2: I think Jerry deserves a lot of some credit now
[7:36] Speaker 2: because I'd even go to the head coach when he
[7:38] Speaker 2: made the move, which, let's face it, I think he
[7:40] Speaker 2: kind of looked around. He didn't want to pay premiums
[7:43] Speaker 2: for Ben Johnson to Mike Vrabel, so he went a
[7:45] Speaker 2: little cheaper. But this is it's not like he hired
[7:47] Speaker 2: Brandon Staley. I mean, this guy in his thirties was
[7:50] Speaker 2: a guy turning down head coaching offers. His career got
[7:53] Speaker 2: derailed the guy with the wrong head coaches. But I
[7:56] Speaker 2: would say, Brian Schottenheimer, listen, what do you do well
[7:59] Speaker 2: if you're coach, Well, I'm an offensive coach. I call
[8:02] Speaker 2: the offensive plays and my quarterback and my wide receiver.
[8:05] Speaker 2: Who listen. George Pickens was pretty toxic. Jerry took a
[8:08] Speaker 2: lot of shit for that, because like, I don't think
[8:10] Speaker 2: you're gonna be able to handle this. I even thought
[8:12] Speaker 2: putting this on Brian Schottenheimer. Jerry's pretty risky. Well, Brian
[8:16] Speaker 2: Schottenheimer Dak Prescott have handled George and kind of made
[8:20] Speaker 2: him a star. I mean, Colin, he's a pro bowler.
[8:24] Speaker 2: Like if you go, well, who's gonna go to the
[8:26] Speaker 2: Pro Bowl at wide receiver, It's not Ceedee Lamb, It's
[8:28] Speaker 2: George Pickens, Javonte Williams. Again, Jerry takes a lot of
[8:32] Speaker 2: heat because he talks a lot. But like just from
[8:34] Speaker 2: a pure GM standpoint, I think we got to say,
[8:37] Speaker 2: over the course, going from the McCarthy era, that stretch
[8:40] Speaker 2: of twelve twelve twelve, a lot of good players on
[8:42] Speaker 2: those rosters. Yeah, Jerry's the one picking them all, and
[8:45] Speaker 2: now he's five to five and one. Who would have
[8:47] Speaker 2: thought a month ago like this Kansas City Dallas game
[8:50] Speaker 2: on Turkey Day, there's a lot on the line. I mean,
[8:52] Speaker 2: the Cowboys are not dead by any means in terms
[8:55] Speaker 2: of like the wild card. If if they win that
[8:57] Speaker 2: all of a sudden, you're six five and one, you
[8:59] Speaker 2: still got the Giants, And I would imagine the commanders
[9:02] Speaker 2: on the schedule like this are some winnable games.
[9:04] Speaker 1: Collen, Yeah no. And the other thing is twenty four
[9:07] Speaker 1: unentered points. That says leadership. I mean to me, you
[9:12] Speaker 1: trail twenty one nothing you got to I mean, there
[9:16] Speaker 1: are teams that quit in this league. We've seen it.
[9:18] Speaker 1: There are teams that quit, you know, Jerry Jones said
[9:21] Speaker 1: last week, and I've always felt this about Dak is
[9:24] Speaker 1: that his intangibles are better than the tangibles. He's okay
[9:28] Speaker 1: in terms of just a pure passer, he's okay. But
[9:32] Speaker 1: his leadership, his toughness, his respect in the locker room.
[9:36] Speaker 1: And the other thing is, think about this, John Zeke,
[9:40] Speaker 1: Circus des circus, Jerry can sometimes be a circus. There
[9:45] Speaker 1: was the cultural the Black Lives Matter, which was you know,
[9:47] Speaker 1: it was for about a year of people like Dak
[9:51] Speaker 1: took stands and not always popular stands, and you know,
[9:55] Speaker 1: we had it was a very tumultuous like year or two,
[9:58] Speaker 1: we had COVID. There was just a a lot of
[10:00] Speaker 1: stuff happening in our country. And you know, and I
[10:03] Speaker 1: remember Dak getting a lot of heat standing behind Jerry Jones.
[10:07] Speaker 1: But leadership is not a popular position and Dak sometimes
[10:12] Speaker 1: has always been the most popular teammate. You know a
[10:14] Speaker 1: lot of guys in that locker room love Zeke, they
[10:16] Speaker 1: love Dez their young locker rooms. He's dealt with a
[10:20] Speaker 1: lot of noise. George Pickens was trouble in Pittsburgh. George
[10:25] Speaker 1: Pickens has been great. He's been absolutely great. I mean,
[10:28] Speaker 1: in fact, today the disappointment was Ceedee Lamb dropping them
[10:31] Speaker 1: all the end zone. Like it's not just that Pickens
[10:33] Speaker 1: production has been great, but it's been George has been
[10:36] Speaker 1: like like a big game performer. He's often played better
[10:40] Speaker 1: at the biggest moments.
[10:41] Speaker 2: Well, I also think one of the knocks on the
[10:43] Speaker 2: on the flip side of the team they were playing
[10:46] Speaker 2: is like Jalen's not that outspoken. He's not the you know,
[10:50] Speaker 2: the leader of maybe by his actions, but it's like, Jalen,
[10:53] Speaker 2: we're in your six or seven. Now you're the highest
[10:55] Speaker 2: paid guy on the team. Like there's no question when
[10:57] Speaker 2: it comes to Dallas or most good teams. Patrick Mahomes,
[11:00] Speaker 2: Josh Allen, Lamar Jackson, like these guys are very vocal
[11:03] Speaker 2: leading in the front. It feels like Jalen hurts and
[11:06] Speaker 2: that's where the Eagles kind of get weird, and that's
[11:08] Speaker 2: a moment. Like listen, Sirianni's record speaks for itself. Coming
[11:11] Speaker 2: in this game, I think he was like fifty five
[11:13] Speaker 2: and twenty two, so anyone could be critical of him,
[11:16] Speaker 2: but this is a bottom line league and he wins
[11:18] Speaker 2: a lot. But as a coach, like your star quarterback,
[11:21] Speaker 2: you sometimes need that guy right there with you, screaming
[11:23] Speaker 2: at guys, getting on guys. And they have this AJ
[11:26] Speaker 2: Brown thing. It's just it won't go away. And I
[11:29] Speaker 2: think AJ he's not intimidated by Jalen. He's like, well
[11:32] Speaker 2: Dallen's are just say anything. So it's just gotten weird.
[11:35] Speaker 2: And you saw a moment today like they kind of fractured.
[11:38] Speaker 2: Now you could freak things happen. They fumble a couple
[11:41] Speaker 2: of times, but the offense like they have had now
[11:44] Speaker 2: stretches throughout this season. When you have DeVante Smith, who
[11:48] Speaker 2: is I mean, I don't know if he's an elite player,
[11:50] Speaker 2: but he's a high highs AJ Today, I mean, I
[11:53] Speaker 2: don't know how many catches he had down the stretch,
[11:55] Speaker 2: but he had eight catches one hundred yards. Looked like
[11:57] Speaker 2: the version of the guy that they trade a first
[11:59] Speaker 2: round pick for and trade on this money. They got
[12:00] Speaker 2: Dallas Goddard, they got Saquon Barkley, they got multiple other
[12:03] Speaker 2: running backs they can roll in, and they just do
[12:05] Speaker 2: nothing on offense. It's it's a bizarre experience watching this
[12:09] Speaker 2: Eagles team. It really is, because defensively, up until the
[12:11] Speaker 2: second half, like Fanjo had really had them, they'd become
[12:14] Speaker 2: a defensive team. Yeah.
[12:16] Speaker 1: They If you took the ten worst offensive halfs in
[12:20] Speaker 1: the NFL this year, I made the Eagles have four
[12:22] Speaker 1: to five of them. That's a couple of weeks ago.
[12:24] Speaker 2: They led the league in three and outs. I don't
[12:26] Speaker 2: know where they stand at today, but they if that's
[12:28] Speaker 2: a stat that you lead the league that's usually reserved
[12:32] Speaker 2: for like the Raiders, that you know, a team that's
[12:34] Speaker 2: gonna be drafting in the top two or three, right,
[12:36] Speaker 2: not a team that up until they lost this game,
[12:38] Speaker 2: I was like, Oh, the Eagles is gonna have the
[12:40] Speaker 2: number one seed. It's gonna be weird, but it's gonna
[12:42] Speaker 2: be hard to beat them on the road. And now
[12:44] Speaker 2: you go, I don't know, I mean this today. That
[12:46] Speaker 2: was an enlightening experience watching up twenty one nothing even
[12:49] Speaker 2: twenty one seven and a half, you're playing a rival.
[12:52] Speaker 2: I would have bet a decent amount of money the
[12:54] Speaker 2: final score would have been like thirty one to fourteen
[12:56] Speaker 2: or something. At the halftime to lose twenty I would
[13:00] Speaker 2: imagine if we looked at the halftime odds, the Cowboys
[13:03] Speaker 2: would have been what five to one underdog to win
[13:06] Speaker 2: the game out right, they would have been a massive underdog.
[13:09] Speaker 2: So I that's that's one of the crazier outcomes I
[13:12] Speaker 2: think we've had this season, Collin, what we just witnessed
[13:14] Speaker 2: dak Is.
[13:15] Speaker 1: I bet if you went and looked at Dak's career splits,
[13:19] Speaker 1: he is just damn good at home.
[13:21] Speaker 2: He really is, you know.
[13:23] Speaker 1: So it's it's I found I have found Dak over
[13:28] Speaker 1: the course of my you know, career covering Dak Is,
[13:32] Speaker 1: I've I think I like him more now than I've
[13:34] Speaker 1: ever liked him. And it's probably one of the weaker
[13:36] Speaker 1: teams he's ever been on. But his ability to take
[13:39] Speaker 1: kind of a temperamental player, his ability from COVID through
[13:44] Speaker 1: it and all the stuff that was happening to just
[13:47] Speaker 1: twelve wins, twelve wins, twelve wins with Mike McCarthy, who
[13:50] Speaker 1: was criticized. He's had Jason Garrett, Mike McCarthy, Brian Schottenheimer.
[13:54] Speaker 1: Most people have been very critical of those coaches. Every
[13:58] Speaker 1: time he's been upright and healthy with all three of them,
[14:00] Speaker 1: he wins double digit games. And you start looking at
[14:02] Speaker 1: their schedule this year, Dallas. Dallas is not that much
[14:07] Speaker 1: fun to play. I mean, let's let's be honest about Dallas.
[14:11] Speaker 1: It's hard to find one great corner in this league.
[14:14] Speaker 1: Dallas has two elite wide receivers. It's just really hard
[14:18] Speaker 1: to defend him. George Pickens isn't a burner, but he's
[14:21] Speaker 1: got incredible catching radius. Ceedee Lamb is a separator. So
[14:24] Speaker 1: Dallas is hard to play. And Javonte Williams now they're
[14:27] Speaker 1: run games better because this offensive line is a better
[14:30] Speaker 1: run blocking than pass blocking line like Dallas is a handful.
[14:33] Speaker 1: If you get into track meets with Dallas and they're
[14:36] Speaker 1: they're tough to defend, but.
[14:37] Speaker 2: And their tight end could catch four or five six
[14:39] Speaker 2: balls a game. Ferguson today had five catches for sixty yards.
[14:42] Speaker 2: I mean, think about that story. Wasn't last year that
[14:44] Speaker 2: Jerry would take people on tours throughout the facility. You know,
[14:47] Speaker 2: guys are lifting weights, watching film and Dak has to
[14:50] Speaker 2: wave and take pictures. It's not an easy place to operate.
[14:54] Speaker 2: You talk about the home splits. Dak doesn't have a
[14:56] Speaker 2: big arm, so if you put him outside in Pittsburgh
[14:59] Speaker 2: in December, side in Baltimore, it's not gonna look as good. Well,
[15:02] Speaker 2: who else falls into that category? Jared Goff Tierre Goff
[15:04] Speaker 2: doesn't have a huge arm, so he looks better in
[15:07] Speaker 2: southern California, the Bay Area, a dome, a controlled environment.
[15:11] Speaker 2: You know, Drew Brees was the best version of this.
[15:13] Speaker 2: Drew never had a big arm. Well, where could he
[15:15] Speaker 2: dominate in a controlled Peyton Manning? Peyton Manning and Tom
[15:18] Speaker 2: Brady had polar opposite arms. Peyton had I would say,
[15:21] Speaker 2: an average arm at best. Now he had accuracy like
[15:23] Speaker 2: Drew Brees, at an elite level. But in terms of
[15:25] Speaker 2: like piercing through the wind like Dak's even Dak today
[15:28] Speaker 2: through a couple of balls, one went right through Zach
[15:30] Speaker 2: Bond's hands, could have been an interception. I would say
[15:34] Speaker 2: from an arm strength standpoint, yeah, it's pretty average. But
[15:37] Speaker 2: when he gets into a rhythm, timing, understanding of the offense,
[15:40] Speaker 2: all that type stuff. This is why I think and
[15:43] Speaker 2: I'm with you players like this. They earned my respect
[15:46] Speaker 2: over time because I'm like, you know what, you see
[15:48] Speaker 2: so many guys ebb and flow and then wash out
[15:51] Speaker 2: of the league like Dak Prescott when it's all said
[15:53] Speaker 2: and done. Yeah, is he Josh Allen or Patrick mahomes
[15:56] Speaker 2: Lamar Jackson? Of course not. But I think his career
[15:59] Speaker 2: he's maximized. He's an overachiever, you know. And when you're
[16:04] Speaker 2: an overachiever and you're Tom Brady or Peyton Manning, you
[16:07] Speaker 2: have the talent, you're Hall of famer. When you're Dak Prescott,
[16:10] Speaker 2: a mid round pick that if he wasn't overachiever, Dak
[16:13] Speaker 2: Prescott would have been a backup years ago. So I
[16:15] Speaker 2: respect the hell out of him because and today's a
[16:18] Speaker 2: great example of I think most people would have just
[16:20] Speaker 2: punted that game. You just one Monday night, you're playing
[16:22] Speaker 2: again on Turkey Day, and I don't they win. I
[16:25] Speaker 2: still can't believe they won Collin twenty four to twenty one.
[16:27] Speaker 2: That's insane.
[16:28] Speaker 1: I don't miss doing local radio, although I listen to it.

[19:05] Speaker 1: the second biggest game, but it's notable. Shaduur Sanders debuted
[19:10] Speaker 1: his Cleveland Browns beat the hapless, listless Raiders twenty four
[19:15] Speaker 1: to ten. Listen, I know it's two two and eight teams,
[19:18] Speaker 1: but there's a tebow effect here with Shadur Sanders. Let's
[19:21] Speaker 1: just get it right out of the way. So Cleveland
[19:24] Speaker 1: hammered the worst coach team in the league, the Raiders,
[19:27] Speaker 1: twenty four to three. Pete Carroll left Seattle, they immediately
[19:31] Speaker 1: got better. He arrived in Vegas. They're immediately noticeably worse
[19:35] Speaker 1: than Antonio Peers. Nothing against Pete, but they don't do
[19:38] Speaker 1: anything well. Okay, So I'll just first of all, I
[19:41] Speaker 1: thought Kevin Stefanski was really smart. I loved they used
[19:45] Speaker 1: the wildcat when they got down to the goal line,
[19:48] Speaker 1: so take that out of Shadur's hands. Congested area. Judkins
[19:51] Speaker 1: is an emerging stud out of Ohio State. He and
[19:54] Speaker 1: Treyvon Henderson both excellent. He is a big, strong power back.
[19:59] Speaker 1: Shadur was seven for eleven and a half. They moved
[20:01] Speaker 1: the pocket a lot. He deserves credit. He didn't have
[20:04] Speaker 1: a lot of running backwards, not a lot of negative plays.
[20:07] Speaker 1: You can tell they worked on timing. He got screwed
[20:11] Speaker 1: by Jerry Judy, who has zero self aware in the
[20:16] Speaker 1: first half. Overall, he was okay. I wrote it down.
[20:21] Speaker 1: If Gino Smith is a franchise quarterback, Shadur deserves to be,
[20:24] Speaker 1: at least for a year, a franchise quarterback. I thought
[20:27] Speaker 1: it was a smart game plan. I thought he was fine.
[20:30] Speaker 1: He had one awful pick. I predicted he would go
[20:33] Speaker 1: thirteen of eighteen one TV and one bad pick. It
[20:36] Speaker 1: was pretty close to it.
[20:38] Speaker 2: Your thoughts well, to me, he brought an explosive element
[20:41] Speaker 2: to the offense, He had a big play that probably
[20:44] Speaker 2: easily could have been a touchdown. The guy was tackled
[20:46] Speaker 2: at the one yard line. The play to Judy was
[20:48] Speaker 2: an explosive play. Dylan Gabriel did not bring him that
[20:52] Speaker 2: to me, just with those two passes alone. Now you're
[20:54] Speaker 2: playing the Raiders. He's starting next week, and clearly they
[20:57] Speaker 2: talked about it these articles coming out the last couple
[20:59] Speaker 2: of weeks. He felt the pressure of you have to
[21:03] Speaker 2: show something or we will go back to the other guy.
[21:05] Speaker 2: He knew it. He knows. It does feel like the organization,
[21:09] Speaker 2: in a weird way, is a little more pro Dylan Gabriel. Right,
[21:12] Speaker 2: they drafted them higher, which makes sense. And to me,
[21:15] Speaker 2: he showed enough to get another start for sure. Yes,
[21:18] Speaker 2: so to me, Dylan Gabriel isn't very good, So it's
[21:22] Speaker 2: not really a conversation of like going back and forth
[21:25] Speaker 2: now should or just get starts for the foreseeable future?
[21:28] Speaker 2: And god, the Raiders are terrible. I mean, that is
[21:30] Speaker 2: an organization. You know. People make fun of the Browns,
[21:33] Speaker 2: and rightfully so, they're in a different universe than the Raiders.
[21:38] Speaker 1: Listen, the Jets and the Giants have fight. Yeah, the
[21:41] Speaker 1: Raiders have no fight. I mean they don't even play hard.
[21:45] Speaker 1: They don't do anything. Well, you say what you want
[21:47] Speaker 1: about the New York Giants. That was one of the
[21:49] Speaker 1: more entertaining games today. It was great. For sure. The
[21:52] Speaker 1: Jets fight their ass off. They just don't have a
[21:55] Speaker 1: good coach of many good players. Raiders have nothing. And
[21:58] Speaker 1: Pete's got to look in the mirror. Pete left Seattle
[22:02] Speaker 1: and they got really good, really fast, and Pete Antonio Pierce.
[22:06] Speaker 1: I talked to Tom Telesco about this. Both got let go.
[22:09] Speaker 1: Tom's thing was, those guys played hard. He got that
[22:14] Speaker 1: locker room unified because Josh McDaniels had separate, couldn't galvanize
[22:19] Speaker 1: the locker room. So like, Pete's got to look himself
[22:21] Speaker 1: in the mirror, like he's no longer, like he's not current,
[22:24] Speaker 1: Like his defense isn't current.
[22:27] Speaker 2: Why I think, you know, almost like a draft pick,
[22:30] Speaker 2: where you go, this guy's floors high. I just assume,
[22:32] Speaker 2: you know, Pete would get the train back on the
[22:34] Speaker 2: tracks and get them going, And it's been the opposite.
[22:37] Speaker 2: It feels like they're not only regressing. They've had a
[22:40] Speaker 2: lot of bad teams over the last what twenty plus years.
[22:43] Speaker 2: This is as ugly as it gets. Collin This I
[22:46] Speaker 2: mean lifeless. But you remove Max Crosby, the one guy
[22:49] Speaker 2: who a lot of respect for him, playing his ass
[22:51] Speaker 2: off in given the situation their offensive line. I mean
[22:55] Speaker 2: it felt like every play Miles Garrett, Miles Garrett could
[22:57] Speaker 2: have broke the single sack record in the game. So yeah,
[23:01] Speaker 2: I'm with you. I know they don't want to do this.
[23:04] Speaker 2: They have some new Brady venture capital money. I think
[23:07] Speaker 2: you have to think about this is not the answer,
[23:10] Speaker 2: and especially this offseason. You know that the Browns they
[23:13] Speaker 2: do have some young pieces. It looks like they got
[23:14] Speaker 2: a good young draft.
[23:16] Speaker 1: Draft, Lias got players.
[23:17] Speaker 2: I think if you're spy tech, you got to go
[23:20] Speaker 2: to Mark and Tom and go listen. We had the
[23:23] Speaker 2: right logic, but this blew up in our face. Do
[23:26] Speaker 2: we just need to get a young coach? Trade Max
[23:29] Speaker 2: Crosby this offseason and kind of think to the future
[23:32] Speaker 2: because what they're doing right now he has no value
[23:34] Speaker 2: on their team, you know. I mean they're headed toward
[23:36] Speaker 2: three wins, so yeah, I mean, props the Shador and
[23:39] Speaker 2: look like Dean was having a good time. Yeah.
[23:41] Speaker 1: No, I mean I I the final numbers. I think
[23:45] Speaker 1: it's realistic to think he was going to have one
[23:47] Speaker 1: bad pick. But last time I checked in ten to
[23:50] Speaker 1: seventeen hundred and forty three yards one TV one pick
[23:53] Speaker 1: passer ratings about sixty. Because it is a.
[23:55] Speaker 2: Pretty easy opponent, you know. I mean, we'll see him
[23:58] Speaker 2: when he plays some more credible opponents. But yeah, it
[24:01] Speaker 2: is what it is.
[24:03] Speaker 1: Yeah, And to your point, I always pushed back on
[24:06] Speaker 1: the he's a pocket quarterback. He moves fine. He moves
[24:09] Speaker 1: better than go for a Stafford kirk cousin. He moves fine.
[24:15] Speaker 1: And by the way, he tends to a couple of
[24:16] Speaker 1: times today he just moved in the pocket. He just
[24:19] Speaker 1: glided left or right. And Stefanski, who I think is excellent,
[24:22] Speaker 1: they moved the pocket a lot for him. They baked
[24:25] Speaker 1: in some easy completions and he had two big throws
[24:27] Speaker 1: down the field. Jerry Judy. When Jerry Judy made that
[24:30] Speaker 1: play trying to high step people at midfield, Sean Payton,
[24:34] Speaker 1: Denver is a bye week, I guarantee you sees that,
[24:36] Speaker 1: and just rolls his eyes. He couldn't get Judy out
[24:39] Speaker 1: of Denver fast enough. So Cleveland goes on. They hammer
[24:43] Speaker 1: the Raiders, who right now are absolutely lifeless. Okay, Well,
[24:50] Speaker 1: Kansas City in overtime beats the Colts twenty three to twenty.
[24:52] Speaker 1: And it really came down to this is that when
[24:55] Speaker 1: the Colts made the sauce gardener move and they gave
[24:57] Speaker 1: up a couple of first people said, well, where do
[25:00] Speaker 1: you get your quarterback? And I think the Colts felt
[25:03] Speaker 1: like we have Daniel Jones. Here's some pretty stark numbers.
[25:07] Speaker 1: So Indy led twenty to nine, started the fourth quarter
[25:12] Speaker 1: and recovered to Kansas City fumble. The game was theirs.
[25:15] Speaker 1: The game was in the Colts, and we know they
[25:18] Speaker 1: have a star running back and an above average offensive
[25:20] Speaker 1: line and good receivers Pittman Pierce, Daniel Jones, four consecutive
[25:27] Speaker 1: three and ounce eighteen total fourth quarter yards now Mahomes
[25:32] Speaker 1: fourth quarter and overtime, thirteen first downs the Colts zero,
[25:37] Speaker 1: Kansas City two hundred and thirty six yards in that time,
[25:40] Speaker 1: fourth quarter and overtime the Colts eighteen. So again you're
[25:46] Speaker 1: in the AFC, you're in the Mahomes Conference, and the
[25:51] Speaker 1: Kansas City now maybe on life support. But they get Denver,
[25:54] Speaker 1: the Chargers and the Texans three of their toughest games,
[25:56] Speaker 1: all at home. So this wasn't just a win. They
[26:00] Speaker 1: went from life support to a It looks like this
[26:03] Speaker 1: was one of the tougher Ones Colts on a bye.
[26:08] Speaker 1: Daniel Jones was so bad, so limited fourth quarter in overtime.
[26:14] Speaker 1: I mean it's you say what you want about Kansas City,
[26:18] Speaker 1: look at their schedule. I'm gonna take him to win
[26:20] Speaker 1: playoff games and make the playoffs.
[26:22] Speaker 2: You yeah, I mean, I Mahomes had a stretch in
[26:25] Speaker 2: that game where he was like, I don't think he's
[26:27] Speaker 2: playing that well. This is you know, I'm talking like
[26:29] Speaker 2: the second and third quarter when Kansas City was pretty lifeless.
[26:33] Speaker 2: It's not like Indy was running away with the game.
[26:35] Speaker 2: I walked out of the room right when the game
[26:37] Speaker 2: early on, and I come back. I'm like, Kansas City
[26:39] Speaker 2: just had the ball and Indy had the ball in
[26:41] Speaker 2: like the five yard line. They just gifted them, you
[26:42] Speaker 2: know that interception he threw, So Daniel Jones was gifted
[26:46] Speaker 2: a touchdown, right. They went up seven to nothing, and
[26:48] Speaker 2: then they had a good drive after Kansas City punts
[26:51] Speaker 2: and I think it's fourteen or it's fourteen to three.
[26:53] Speaker 2: So once it's fourteen to three. They don't even come
[26:56] Speaker 2: remotely close to score in a touchdown. And I actually
[26:58] Speaker 2: think a lot of his co copletion throughout the game
[27:01] Speaker 2: or on Shane side can scheme in the ball or
[27:03] Speaker 2: scheming guys wide open. I mean, they do a great
[27:05] Speaker 2: job with the tight end, who's a really good player,
[27:07] Speaker 2: but they scheme him. I mean, to me, he is
[27:10] Speaker 2: a game plan specific quarterback.
[27:12] Speaker 1: Right now, Daniel Jones did not have a single attempt
[27:17] Speaker 1: over twenty yards, not a single attempt. And again, this
[27:22] Speaker 1: is an above average offensive line, and Pittman and Pierce
[27:26] Speaker 1: both get downfield, as does the tight end. So I
[27:29] Speaker 1: think it's what they said, what Kansas City said with
[27:31] Speaker 1: that game plan is don't give him anything cheap over
[27:34] Speaker 1: the top, make him beat us on sixteen play thirteen
[27:39] Speaker 1: play drives. We don't trust Daniel Jonathan in the second half.
[27:42] Speaker 1: He didn't do anything in the fourth quarter.
[27:44] Speaker 2: Yeah, to me, they have no chance to win the
[27:46] Speaker 2: AFC with that quarterback the way he's playing right now,
[27:49] Speaker 2: especially if they're going to have to be in situations
[27:50] Speaker 2: where they have to go outside on the road to Denver.
[27:54] Speaker 2: What if it's a two seven, it's against Kansas City
[27:57] Speaker 2: in the first round. Who are you taking? I mean
[27:59] Speaker 2: Kansas City was try to give them the game. And
[28:01] Speaker 2: when I say Kansas City, I mean Mahomes missing guys,
[28:04] Speaker 2: I mean how many He still misses a lot of
[28:06] Speaker 2: guys down the field. But when he had to have it,
[28:08] Speaker 2: he settled down. He made some big plays where she
[28:10] Speaker 2: Rice was fantastic. I mean he was. He was an Elitala. Yeah,
[28:15] Speaker 2: Kareem Hunt was running his ass off, and listen, Andy
[28:18] Speaker 2: is not the the run is not the go to
[28:22] Speaker 2: thing with Andy Reid, and today he didn't have a choice.
[28:24] Speaker 2: They leaned on Kareem Hunt. I think they had over
[28:25] Speaker 2: forty carries a day. Obviously in short yardage. Kareem Hunt's fantastic,
[28:29] Speaker 2: but that Mahomes they just could not pull away. And
[28:33] Speaker 2: whenever you do that, you know, to the great players
[28:35] Speaker 2: in my lifetime, you give them an opportunity at the end,
[28:38] Speaker 2: then you lost it. So to me, it just comes
[28:40] Speaker 2: back to Daniel Jones when you hit him in big spots.
[28:44] Speaker 2: I have no faith sitting on the couch watching him
[28:47] Speaker 2: on a third and seven late in the game that
[28:49] Speaker 2: he's going to complete the pass and listen, he's He's
[28:51] Speaker 2: better than the guy who saw low points in New York. Right,
[28:55] Speaker 2: clearly he's an okay player. Yes, but I think we
[28:58] Speaker 2: got a little and I'm guilty of this, we got
[29:00] Speaker 2: a little over excited early on in the season and
[29:04] Speaker 2: we you know, I think people would say, well, that
[29:05] Speaker 2: happened with Sam Donald last year. Sam Donald's a way
[29:08] Speaker 2: better player than Daniel Jones.
[29:10] Speaker 1: Yeah, yeah, yeah, no, And Sam's also a better athlete.
[29:13] Speaker 1: Sam throws deep ball, bigger arm, throws a better deep ball. Sam.
[29:18] Speaker 1: I don't think his confidence doesn't dip much with Danniel Jones.
[29:23] Speaker 1: You can feel if he throws a pick, you can
[29:25] Speaker 1: see if he's getting pressure. Yeah, I mean it's I
[29:30] Speaker 1: just look at those fourth quarter numbers. I mean it's
[29:36] Speaker 1: just incredible. Mahomes in Kansas City. Between the fumble and
[29:39] Speaker 1: the red zone pick, there's no way in a twenty
[29:43] Speaker 1: to nine fourth quarter league, there's no way the Colts
[29:47] Speaker 1: should lose that football game.
[29:48] Speaker 2: Yes, score eleven unanswered to go to overtime and then
[29:50] Speaker 2: lose on any I think it was eighteen yards to
[29:52] Speaker 2: colin all of the fourth quarter in overtime, so it
[29:57] Speaker 2: was for the Colts. Yeah, we're talking twenty five minutes
[29:59] Speaker 2: of game play. Or game of actual on the field
[30:02] Speaker 2: game and they got the ball first, right, they won
[30:05] Speaker 2: the coin toss and they accepted and they put it
[30:08] Speaker 2: on him and didn't go anywhere. Then Kansas City Boom
[30:11] Speaker 2: hit some big plays and all of a sudden, I mean,
[30:13] Speaker 2: they truly saved their season because at one time. One
[30:17] Speaker 2: thing we've learned this year is you can never be
[30:19] Speaker 2: too safe for the league. But you're looking, you're going
[30:21] Speaker 2: twenty to nine, Mahomes was a little off. You're like,
[30:24] Speaker 2: this is really how this little dynasty's gonna come to
[30:27] Speaker 2: an end this season? And the answer was, no, that's
[30:30] Speaker 2: not on the.
[30:30] Speaker 1: Colts watch no. And I mean, if you look at
[30:33] Speaker 1: the AFC, Trevor Lawrence, oh he's terrible. Oh god, he's
[30:38] Speaker 1: just it's over like it's just he's had a college coach,
[30:44] Speaker 1: offensive coach. Now he's got another offensive coach. Trevor just
[30:48] Speaker 1: makes too many bad throws. It's just and by the way,
[30:51] Speaker 1: Jacoby Myers, Brian Thomas, he has a couple of nice backs,
[30:55] Speaker 1: he's got an offensive coach. Trevor Lawrence just you know
[30:58] Speaker 1: what I mean, he was just never it never worked.
[31:02] Speaker 1: And so and then you have Daniel Jones, so you
[31:04] Speaker 1: start looking around. Right now you have Josh Allen, but
[31:06] Speaker 1: Josh Allen didn't have a defense, So you can sell
[31:09] Speaker 1: all your stock you want. They get the Denver Broncos,
[31:12] Speaker 1: the Chargers and Texans at home Kansas City at six
[31:15] Speaker 1: and five. My money, they make the playoffs and win games.
[31:18] Speaker 2: I'd even throw. I mean, clearly Lamar is banged up
[31:21] Speaker 2: this year.
[31:21] Speaker 1: He does not look this He's not nearly as elusive.
[31:25] Speaker 2: And the Steelers are in a complete free fall right now,
[31:28] Speaker 2: and I mean they're starting quarterback can't even play. So
[31:31] Speaker 2: I think when you look at that division, which over
[31:33] Speaker 2: the last three or four years, you know it's produced
[31:36] Speaker 2: Burrow obviously, Pete Lamar, even the Steelers have been feisty.
[31:39] Speaker 2: I'm selling my stock on that division. You look at
[31:42] Speaker 2: the you know, the AFC South, you go not taking
[31:44] Speaker 2: the Jags, definitely not the Colts. So to me, it's
[31:47] Speaker 2: just it's back to the Chargers would have a chance.
[31:49] Speaker 2: They didn't have a million injuries. I just think the
[31:52] Speaker 2: the AFC West. But the Chiefs, I mean, they did
[31:55] Speaker 2: lose to the Jags. It's why today, I mean their
[31:57] Speaker 2: season was kind of on the line, but they've got
[32:00] Speaker 2: some work to do, Colin. It's not quite over yet. Now.
[32:02] Speaker 2: They played Dallas this upcoming week, which is obviously going
[32:05] Speaker 2: to be huge.
[32:07] Speaker 1: Yeah, and the Jacksonville lost. In fairness, it was a
[32:09] Speaker 1: standalone game, probably the biggest regular season game in Jacksonville
[32:13] Speaker 1: in a decade. I mean, it felt like one of
[32:15] Speaker 1: those rare games where you know Jacksonville could have a
[32:18] Speaker 1: national imprint.
[32:20] Speaker 2: So freaky play too, when he throws the pick in
[32:23] Speaker 2: the end zone and they taken one hundred yards for
[32:25] Speaker 2: a touchdown. I mean, that's that happens to a Mahomes
[32:28] Speaker 2: of Brady, a paid manny what once every five years,
[32:31] Speaker 2: something like that.
[32:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, Okay, Chicago holds on to beat Pittsburgh thirty one
[32:38] Speaker 1: to twenty eight. The Bears are eight and three in
[32:40] Speaker 1: first place. Now, if you don't follow the Bears, to
[32:43] Speaker 1: give them credit, Montes Sweat was very good defensively today.
[32:47] Speaker 1: They were missing five starters, so there were band aids
[32:50] Speaker 1: in Bondo. That was not a Chicago Bears defense. So
[32:53] Speaker 1: Aaron Rodgers didn't start and TJ. Watt and Pittsburgh had
[32:57] Speaker 1: the one thing I'd said all week on FS one
[33:00] Speaker 1: was just play clean football, don't tease TJ. Watt, Well,
[33:04] Speaker 1: what did they do? He didn't let go of the
[33:06] Speaker 1: ball early. It's a strip sack. They trail fourteen to
[33:10] Speaker 1: seven to Pittsburgh and then come back. But Chicago was
[33:13] Speaker 1: missing a lot of defensive starters, so it just be fair.
[33:19] Speaker 1: I wrote some notes down. Now, again, this is something
[33:22] Speaker 1: John I've been on since he was at USC. Caleb
[33:26] Speaker 1: three touchdowns, no picks. He doesn't throw picks, one hundred
[33:31] Speaker 1: four passer rating two hundred and forty yards. He was
[33:34] Speaker 1: solid to above average on third down. Also, Colston Loveland
[33:39] Speaker 1: the tight end for Michigan, the rookie. That connection now
[33:42] Speaker 1: over the last two to three weeks is a real connection.
[33:45] Speaker 1: So he had that really bad strip sack.
[33:47] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[33:48] Speaker 1: I also wrote down he missed three throws in the
[33:50] Speaker 1: first half. I've come to the conclusion that you just
[33:55] Speaker 1: you get the playmaking. This guy's going to complete sixty one,
[34:00] Speaker 1: son of his throats. I mean, if he can't do
[34:01] Speaker 1: sixty four sixty five, I wrote this down, John, this
[34:05] Speaker 1: is the I think it's the seventh time this season
[34:11] Speaker 1: Caleb's under sixty percent, and that's again with pretty damn
[34:15] Speaker 1: good protection. I've my take is Ben and Caleb it's winning.
[34:21] Speaker 1: It's not a great fit necessarily, but I think he
[34:25] Speaker 1: just deal with some inaccuracies because you get the upside
[34:28] Speaker 1: the ceiling so high.
[34:29] Speaker 2: I thought today was the best game he's played it
[34:31] Speaker 2: probably as a pro, you know. I mean, obviously his
[34:34] Speaker 2: rookie season kind of throw away, but this year once
[34:37] Speaker 2: he got sacked by TJ. Watt and he kind of
[34:39] Speaker 2: felt like, oh when the Steelers did that to Daniel
[34:42] Speaker 2: Jones and the Colts right TJ Watt made the play,
[34:45] Speaker 2: It flipped that entire game, and then they kind of
[34:48] Speaker 2: just bull rushed them, and I was like, is this
[34:50] Speaker 2: gonna happen? Is he going to go into a shell?
[34:52] Speaker 2: He got. He was awesome in the second half. He
[34:55] Speaker 2: was really good, and to me, the mental toughness after
[34:58] Speaker 2: that play, I mean, that was a disaster risk play.
[35:01] Speaker 2: You know, even JJ Watts like that cannot happen holding
[35:04] Speaker 2: the ball when you're backed up in your own end zone.
[35:06] Speaker 2: So I thought like, oh, this thing could now kind
[35:08] Speaker 2: of unravel if anything. He went the opposite way. He
[35:12] Speaker 2: made a ton of plays in the second half. He's
[35:14] Speaker 2: not accurate. He's not you know, Steve Young or Drew Brees.
[35:17] Speaker 2: That's not his style. I saw stat today that he
[35:20] Speaker 2: was under two point seven seconds getting rid of the ball,
[35:23] Speaker 2: which is second fastest so far this year. Like, he
[35:25] Speaker 2: was getting rid of the football quickly, and to me,
[35:28] Speaker 2: that's gonna work with Ben Johnson, So listen, I've been
[35:31] Speaker 2: critical of him over the course of this season. Today
[35:35] Speaker 2: is not one of those days for me. I was
[35:37] Speaker 2: impressed in the second half, especially that TJ. Watt moment.
[35:41] Speaker 2: I can imagine when he's running over He's like, oh
[35:43] Speaker 2: my god, Ben's gonna want to kill me because that
[35:45] Speaker 2: is a no no with an offensive coach, right, And
[35:48] Speaker 2: he was lights out in the second half. I mean,
[35:51] Speaker 2: getting rid of the ball, fast, explosive plays Him and
[35:53] Speaker 2: DJ Moore were excellent today that you know they have
[35:57] Speaker 2: I think coming into this game, obviously they didn't run
[35:59] Speaker 2: the ball well today. I mean they're one of the
[36:01] Speaker 2: best running teams, I think second best in the league.
[36:03] Speaker 2: Today they couldn't really do it. So if you told me, hey,
[36:05] Speaker 2: they're not really going to run the ball, He's going
[36:07] Speaker 2: to have a fumble six to the Steelers on TJ. Wad,
[36:11] Speaker 2: I'd be like, oh, this might not be a good
[36:12] Speaker 2: day for him. If anything, it was the opposite. So
[36:15] Speaker 2: I think if you're a Bears fan, I'm feeling pretty good. Now.
[36:18] Speaker 2: We got a long way to go to win the division. Still,
[36:20] Speaker 2: you know, the Lions kept alive, and obviously the Packers
[36:23] Speaker 2: defense is elite, but you're eight and three. It is
[36:26] Speaker 2: pretty incredible little stretch here for Caleb and definitely the
[36:29] Speaker 2: head coach Ben Johnson. That was a massive and a
[36:32] Speaker 2: devastating loss for the Steelers.
[36:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, so they were three and seven and one score games.
[36:37] Speaker 1: If you want to see coaching three and seven last
[36:40] Speaker 1: year in one score games and they look disorganized in
[36:43] Speaker 1: close games. They're now six and one, and that's coaching.
[36:47] Speaker 1: That's the touchdown swing you get. Caleb's a touchdown and
[36:50] Speaker 1: a half, like like seven and a half points better,
[36:54] Speaker 1: at least he was a couple of weeks ago when
[36:56] Speaker 1: I checked in. They score about seven and a half
[36:57] Speaker 1: points more a game, and again they probably update after today.
[37:01] Speaker 1: But I also think what Caleb's showing you. I remember
[37:06] Speaker 1: before the season started, you and I both talked about this.
[37:09] Speaker 1: You and I didn't care about wins. It was like,
[37:11] Speaker 1: cut the sacks in half and that'll be fine, which
[37:14] Speaker 1: he's john They've cut like seventy five percent of the
[37:16] Speaker 1: snack sacks. They don't get sacked at home. I mean,
[37:20] Speaker 1: so there's two or three things you just have to say, Wow,
[37:22] Speaker 1: he doesn't get hurt. The kid doesn't throw picks high
[37:26] Speaker 1: school college bro, he doesn't throw picks today three touchdowns,
[37:30] Speaker 1: no picks, and he's coachable anything that you and I
[37:34] Speaker 1: his college issue. I remember talking to two gms about this.
[37:37] Speaker 1: They were like, he's really a erradic throwing it, they called.
[37:40] Speaker 1: One guy said, he's like a streaky NBA shooter. He
[37:43] Speaker 1: gets into these streaks where he'll go eight for eight
[37:45] Speaker 1: and you're like, oh, you'll come out the next series
[37:47] Speaker 1: and you're like, he just misses. This guy's badly. He
[37:49] Speaker 1: skips balls. He's a streaky passer. And I don't think
[37:52] Speaker 1: it's based on confidence. I just don't think he has
[37:54] Speaker 1: the world's best mechanics. You know, like he had a
[37:57] Speaker 1: couple today where you know, it's just it's the Steelers,
[38:01] Speaker 1: it's Soldier Field, it's a big game, he's coming back
[38:04] Speaker 1: and he just sailed it. You know, it's like a
[38:06] Speaker 1: roll as Chapman. Everything's one hundred and four miles an hour.
[38:08] Speaker 1: Even tho it was absolute gas. But he is clearly coachable,
[38:14] Speaker 1: and I mean it's you know, and I'll say it.
[38:17] Speaker 1: Chicago's a pretty young team. This is a new staff.
[38:21] Speaker 1: It's a growth model. They're ascending, and I mean, I'm
[38:25] Speaker 1: looking at it all my notes right now. I think
[38:29] Speaker 1: Rogers flip flipping off a cameraman before the game.
[38:32] Speaker 2: That made me laugh. I think one thing that's been
[38:35] Speaker 2: big for Chicago to these last couple of weeks. I
[38:37] Speaker 2: saw Ben Johnson say going into this game, Luther Burdens
[38:40] Speaker 2: earned a bigger role. He had a bigger role today.
[38:43] Speaker 2: I think he had three or four catches. He had,
[38:45] Speaker 2: you know, an end around for a big first down. Loveland,
[38:48] Speaker 2: who I think early on you're looking at Tyler Warren,
[38:50] Speaker 2: You're going, this guy looks like the next George Kittle
[38:53] Speaker 2: or something. There's gonna be added pressure. Well, Loveland's really
[38:56] Speaker 2: come on this last month. So you're getting a massive
[38:58] Speaker 2: impact from the tenth over pick. I forget what number
[39:01] Speaker 2: he was, but mid second round pick with Luther from Missouri.
[39:05] Speaker 2: So you're getting those impact guys to go along with
[39:07] Speaker 2: DJ in Rome and a head coach who is I
[39:11] Speaker 2: think he's like the Midwest version of Kyle Shanahan loves
[39:13] Speaker 2: to run. It wants the scheme runs. It's all kind
[39:15] Speaker 2: of coming together. And like you said, if you're not
[39:17] Speaker 2: turned over the ball. I can live with some inaccuracies.
[39:20] Speaker 2: If you're scoring touchdowns, you said, I live with interceptions.
[39:24] Speaker 2: If you throw four touchdowns and one interception, who cares?
[39:27] Speaker 2: It doesn't matter. Right, It's where it's like you have
[39:29] Speaker 2: no touchdowns, one interception. It's like, well, you threw seventy
[39:32] Speaker 2: percent completion percentage. Great job. You want to cookie. I mean,
[39:35] Speaker 2: so he's scoring points, he's moving the ball. And again,
[39:38] Speaker 2: to me, the mental kind of fortitude of after that sack.
[39:42] Speaker 2: Some guys get rattled by that moment. I mean that
[39:45] Speaker 2: you're at home. TJ. Watt slams you to the ground.
[39:49] Speaker 2: I was like, god, I was kind of expecting it
[39:51] Speaker 2: to go the other way, and he battled and he
[39:53] Speaker 2: was good. I'm telling you, I was. That's that's the
[39:56] Speaker 2: most impressive second half for the Bay and the quarterback
[40:02] Speaker 2: and for the Steelers. I mean, you talk about a
[40:04] Speaker 2: team just in a free fall right now. They are.
[40:06] Speaker 2: They got a lot of issues and who knows, it's
[40:07] Speaker 2: not like Rogers's bone's gonna heal overnight. I mean, they
[40:10] Speaker 2: got Mason Rudolph wasn't the biggest issue. I mean, he was,
[40:14] Speaker 2: oh fine, But they are. They're just not that good.
[40:17] Speaker 2: I mean, let's just call it space.
[40:18] Speaker 1: And they did an average they did. Yeah, they had
[40:21] Speaker 1: some ingenuity, which is rare for the Steelers. They did
[40:23] Speaker 1: that push push counter, which was their play of the game.
[40:26] Speaker 1: But basically, you know, all they did was dink and dump.
[40:29] Speaker 1: They didn't throw anything down the field big. So I
[40:32] Speaker 1: mean when you were watching that game, I don't know
[40:33] Speaker 1: how you felt, but Chicago was a better team. Chicago
[40:36] Speaker 1: was more explosive. Chicago had a better offensive, like symmetry, rhythm.
[40:41] Speaker 1: Chicago's a big play offense, you know. And I said
[40:45] Speaker 1: this when it comes to Caleb Williams and bow Knicks,
[40:47] Speaker 1: they're uneven, but they're really good second half quarterbacks. And
[40:51] Speaker 1: it's like, if you could choose something, you choose a
[40:53] Speaker 1: great second half quarterback. That was Mahomes. Remember his first
[40:56] Speaker 1: two years in the league. He'd fall behind twenty seven
[40:58] Speaker 1: to ten and come roaring back. So yeah, I mean
[41:02] Speaker 1: that's the one thing. Drake may is much more even
[41:06] Speaker 1: like he's good first drive, he's good last he's separated
[41:08] Speaker 1: a little bit. But Caleb and bow Nick say whatever
[41:10] Speaker 1: you want. They're both exceptional quarterbacks when they have to
[41:15] Speaker 1: be great. When they have to do it, it drives
[41:17] Speaker 1: you nuts. But overall, I would say it was a
[41:21] Speaker 1: performance for Caleb. This week's Crnstein Performer, brought to you
[41:27] Speaker 1: by McDonald's new Buffalo Ranch Sauce, is Jamir Gibbs. Whole man.
[41:31] Speaker 1: Was he good? He bailed the Lions out from losing
[41:34] Speaker 1: to the pesky New York Giants. Jamir Gibbs career high
[41:38] Speaker 1: two hundred nineteen rushing yards. His performance was satisfying, just
[41:42] Speaker 1: like the first bite at bacon Crispy Buffalo m crispy
[41:49] Speaker 1: all right. Green Bay twenty three, Minnesota six. It's official.
[41:58] Speaker 1: JJ McCarthy just not work in this league. So Minnesota
[42:04] Speaker 1: had four yards and three turnovers in the second half,
[42:07] Speaker 1: four yards and three turnovers. JJ McCarthy sacked five times,
[42:12] Speaker 1: no confidence, two picks. The Vikings had one hundred and
[42:16] Speaker 1: forty five total yards. This is with an elite offensive coach,
[42:20] Speaker 1: Justin Jefferson, above average O line. I mean I watched today,
[42:26] Speaker 1: green Bay coached this game. This is what the film
[42:30] Speaker 1: told you Emmanuel Wilson. I lost track after about twenty
[42:36] Speaker 1: seven carries. Twenty six carries, Green Bay told you because
[42:40] Speaker 1: Jordan Love had a bruised left shoulder, so they were
[42:42] Speaker 1: gonna protect him. They told you in this game as
[42:45] Speaker 1: they settled for field goals, you wouldn't do that if
[42:48] Speaker 1: you played if you're playing Detroit or you're playing Caleb Williams,
[42:52] Speaker 1: you wouldn't do that or Sam Darnold in the NFC.
[42:55] Speaker 1: They were telling you, we're dominating time of possession. We
[42:58] Speaker 1: don't think JJ McCarthy can get into the end zone
[43:01] Speaker 1: with our defense. We don't think he can get in there.
[43:03] Speaker 1: My takeaway in this whole game was they were protecting
[43:05] Speaker 1: Jordan Love. His left is just non throwing shoulder. But
[43:10] Speaker 1: their commitment to the run game I think was also
[43:13] Speaker 1: a nod because they're not a great running team, although
[43:15] Speaker 1: they had over one hundred yards today as they committed
[43:18] Speaker 1: to it, but their game plan told me a Jordan Love,
[43:22] Speaker 1: we don't want them throwing forty times b we can
[43:25] Speaker 1: win this game on field goals. Because it was beyond
[43:29] Speaker 1: conservative by Green.
[43:30] Speaker 2: Bay, I thought my favorite game on the board coming
[43:34] Speaker 2: into this weekend. I don't even know what that number
[43:36] Speaker 2: would have had to be for me to take the
[43:38] Speaker 2: Vikings against the Packers on the road with what we've
[43:41] Speaker 2: seen out JJ McCarthy. I you know, a lot of
[43:46] Speaker 2: talk about JJ McCarthy changing his mechanics and then working
[43:50] Speaker 2: through it. That is impossible when you are actually playing
[43:53] Speaker 2: in games right when they if you go back to
[43:56] Speaker 2: Aaron Rodgers when they drafted him from Jeff Tedford and
[43:58] Speaker 2: he used to hold the ball up, they spent years
[44:01] Speaker 2: changing his mechanics in practice and wiring that muscle memory.
[44:06] Speaker 2: They're trying to do this on the fly with a
[44:08] Speaker 2: team full of veterans. It's an epic disaster because this
[44:12] Speaker 2: guy's getting worse by the game. I mean he looked
[44:15] Speaker 2: by the game. It was pretty embarrassing today. And if
[44:18] Speaker 2: you're I always defend like there's a big difference of
[44:21] Speaker 2: acting like you know, Terrell Owens or Antonio Brown's being
[44:24] Speaker 2: a full malecontent and just being a wide receiver who's
[44:27] Speaker 2: kind of angry like AJ Brown's. Some of his arguments
[44:30] Speaker 2: have had some validity behind him. You know, I don't
[44:33] Speaker 2: think he's always wrong. Now we can argue how he's
[44:35] Speaker 2: handling it, but what he's saying is not incorrect. So
[44:38] Speaker 2: when I see Justin Jefferson sometimes get a little Poudy
[44:42] Speaker 2: like kind of understandable. He's the best player at his
[44:44] Speaker 2: position in the sport, and he's playing with a quarterback
[44:47] Speaker 2: who probably wouldn't be a backup on a lot of teams. Colin.
[44:50] Speaker 2: I mean, I'm watching the NFL this year because so
[44:53] Speaker 2: many I mean everyone is, but the amount of backups
[44:56] Speaker 2: that play that are just from Mac Jones, did Jacobey
[44:58] Speaker 2: Wessett he it would be one of the worst back
[45:01] Speaker 2: even Mason Rudolph today, like JJ McCarthy can't function, Colin,
[45:05] Speaker 2: they can't function.
[45:07] Speaker 1: Davis Mills beat Josh Allen. Davis Mills, Mac Jones. These
[45:11] Speaker 1: guys are more Shador Sanders today. They're functional. They can
[45:15] Speaker 1: move the ball down the field.
[45:16] Speaker 2: So listen, this thing is it feels over before it
[45:20] Speaker 2: even started. Because you're like, well, we gotta have patience.
[45:24] Speaker 2: It's like, well, this team's not gonna have patients because
[45:26] Speaker 2: this offseason they're gonna have to be aggressive to find
[45:29] Speaker 2: some sort of veteran. And how is JJ McCarthy beating
[45:32] Speaker 2: that guy out. We've seen this time and time again.
[45:34] Speaker 2: They will bring in whoever and they'll claim it's a
[45:37] Speaker 2: competition and that guy will be the start of the
[45:39] Speaker 2: week one. You can see this coming from a mile away.
[45:42] Speaker 2: They made a bold move and it didn't work. I mean,
[45:45] Speaker 2: it just simply didn't work. It backfired in their face
[45:48] Speaker 2: and Sam Darnold, every time I look up, there was
[45:50] Speaker 2: another bomb to Jackson Smith. It's like that, there's just
[45:53] Speaker 2: no way. If you're justin Jefferson. When you get home,
[45:57] Speaker 2: you put your feet up after the game and you
[45:58] Speaker 2: turn on some highlights and you see that you're not
[46:02] Speaker 2: really disappointed because, listen, you try to be a team guy.
[46:06] Speaker 2: He tried to be a company guy. But when you
[46:08] Speaker 2: screw up the quarterback position for a un no, I
[46:10] Speaker 2: mean just because you drafted them high. We've seen a
[46:12] Speaker 2: lot of guys. I mean we know for a fact
[46:14] Speaker 2: that half the guys that are drafted fail, right. Yeah,
[46:18] Speaker 2: So I just think that JJ McCarthy today that was
[46:23] Speaker 2: the score doesn't even reflect what we witnessed. I mean,
[46:25] Speaker 2: half of that is just like you said, the Packers
[46:27] Speaker 2: are conservative slash. They're not that explosive of an offense.
[46:30] Speaker 2: They weren't even trying. They were like, we're not even
[46:31] Speaker 2: gonna put anyone in position. It felt like half the
[46:34] Speaker 2: balls could have been interception.
[46:36] Speaker 1: Yeah, I mean Jeff Halfley, the Boston College coach who
[46:39] Speaker 1: took the DC job. It's a very solid game plan.
[46:43] Speaker 1: They don't allow anything over the top, so they didn't
[46:47] Speaker 1: they didn't give They were going to force JJ McCarthy
[46:49] Speaker 1: to throw the ball somewhere between eight yards and eighteen
[46:52] Speaker 1: and he can't. It's you know, he actually moves pretty well,
[46:57] Speaker 1: Like I thought, Stefanski did a good job to really
[46:59] Speaker 1: utilize Shador's mobility, and I think JJ McCarthy is has
[47:05] Speaker 1: better mobility. But there's just there's nothing about JJ. Nothing works.
[47:10] Speaker 2: I think with a lot of guys, Like in baseball,
[47:13] Speaker 2: if you need to work through things, you go to
[47:16] Speaker 2: the minor leagues and they work on mechanics. That happens
[47:19] Speaker 2: with pitchers all the time, right, they work their way
[47:21] Speaker 2: through the minor leagues working on mechanics and getting something
[47:25] Speaker 2: right so when they get to the big leagues they
[47:26] Speaker 2: can just play. You see it in football at the time,
[47:28] Speaker 2: guys on practice squads. That's how they developed, just in practice,
[47:32] Speaker 2: so we can change something that we didn't like from college.
[47:35] Speaker 2: They didn't get a chance to do this last year
[47:37] Speaker 2: because he was hurt, he couldn't practice, and then this
[47:39] Speaker 2: year he just becomes the starter. It's hard to develop
[47:43] Speaker 2: a guy when he's starting, when your expectation is to
[47:46] Speaker 2: win immediately, and it is just backfiring in their face.
[47:49] Speaker 2: I mean you see it on Kevin O'Connell's face. I
[47:51] Speaker 2: mean he knows it because of injuries that you know,
[47:54] Speaker 2: Carson Wentz is you know, his whole body fell apart.
[47:57] Speaker 2: They have no one to go to. So it's the
[48:00] Speaker 2: other player in his situation that was a second you know,
[48:03] Speaker 2: a second year player that was just drafted would be benched, right,
[48:06] Speaker 2: But they're kind of screwed that he's going to continue
[48:10] Speaker 2: to start. And I do think it's in one of
[48:12] Speaker 2: those spots where it could get worse, like this thing
[48:16] Speaker 2: could keep unraveling, you know, because you are playing, you know,
[48:20] Speaker 2: is Caleb's kind of getting better. Obviously the Packers defense
[48:22] Speaker 2: is awesome. How are you gonna get into a scoring
[48:25] Speaker 2: contest with the Lions. So it's just it's a tough spot.
[48:28] Speaker 2: I don't this year, they're just it is what it is.
[48:31] Speaker 2: You're just stuck with them, and you just got to
[48:32] Speaker 2: ride it out and You're gonna take a lot of
[48:34] Speaker 2: heat because it's gonna it's gonna get uglier. Colin.
[48:36] Speaker 1: It just is speaking of Sam Darnold. Seattle eight and three.
[48:41] Speaker 1: Their defense took the day off. They beat Tennessee thirty
[48:44] Speaker 1: to twenty four. Jackson Smith and Jigba broke Seattle's season
[48:50] Speaker 1: record thirteen hundred and thirteen yards. He's on pace for
[48:54] Speaker 1: two thousand yards as a receiver. It's never been done before.
[48:57] Speaker 1: Eight catches today, two touchdowns, one hundred and sixty seven
[48:59] Speaker 1: year yards. Basically, Donald played clean football one hundred and
[49:03] Speaker 1: eighteen passer rating. So this is why Seattle and John
[49:07] Speaker 1: Snyder elected to let DK Metcalf walk out the door.
[49:11] Speaker 1: We don't see practice footage, right, You and I don't.
[49:14] Speaker 1: We don't see it, Seattle did. Seattle knew in the
[49:17] Speaker 1: off season that JSN was a more complete wide receiver
[49:21] Speaker 1: than Metcalf, less moody, more productive, better route tree. Maybe
[49:26] Speaker 1: not the home run potential, although it looks like he
[49:28] Speaker 1: has it. I love JSN. He's another one of these
[49:31] Speaker 1: Ohio state receivers They've got, I mean two more coming out,
[49:35] Speaker 1: Carnell Tates coming out this year. He's unbelievable than a
[49:38] Speaker 1: year after that. It's Jeremiah Smith. Seattle clearly off that
[49:43] Speaker 1: wild Rams loss. The defense just didn't. I thought cam
[49:46] Speaker 1: Ward and they dominated a time of possession. But my
[49:51] Speaker 1: take on JSN and Donald is the thing I'll give
[49:55] Speaker 1: Sam Darnold.
[49:55] Speaker 2: Credit for is.
[49:56] Speaker 1: I went and looked up his passer rating today. His
[49:58] Speaker 1: passer ratings still top six in the league. Like the
[50:01] Speaker 1: reality what Sam Donald is. He has these Andrew look
[50:05] Speaker 1: stink bombs. But when I watched today, he really is
[50:10] Speaker 1: hard to defend because Sam is one of those guys
[50:13] Speaker 1: where he runs looking to throw. Mahomes does this. Some
[50:17] Speaker 1: guys run to run justin fields. He's running to run.
[50:20] Speaker 1: Sam's running to throw, and I don't think he used
[50:23] Speaker 1: to do that years ago. But Sam Donald today is
[50:26] Speaker 1: running to throw. His eyes are downfield. He did a
[50:29] Speaker 1: couple times today against the Titans. He'd run, he'd pull back,
[50:32] Speaker 1: he'd throw it. Seattle's a handful. Are you shocked at
[50:38] Speaker 1: JSN is this dominant?
[50:40] Speaker 2: Yeah? I mean I couldn't even imagined that he'd have
[50:43] Speaker 2: a two thousand yard season. I mean, every time you
[50:45] Speaker 2: look up, he looks like a mixture of Jerry Rice
[50:47] Speaker 2: meets Randy Moss because you think this guy was more
[50:51] Speaker 2: of a slot receiver. I think that was the knock
[50:53] Speaker 2: why he didn't go that high. Typically, guys that are
[50:55] Speaker 2: more outside Jimar Chase, Justin Jefferson went in the twenties.
[50:59] Speaker 2: But like that's a AJ Green Julio Jones, like your
[51:03] Speaker 2: blue chip outside guy can go in the top five.
[51:06] Speaker 2: This guy looks like how did this guy fall so
[51:09] Speaker 2: far in the draft and no one knew he was
[51:11] Speaker 2: this good? I mean, but John Snider did, and I
[51:14] Speaker 2: think he gets credit as he should for some all
[51:18] Speaker 2: time great moves this offseason, punting on Geno Smith to
[51:22] Speaker 2: acquire Sam Darnald and punting on DK Metcalf to just
[51:26] Speaker 2: kind of feature this guy. I mean, it was a
[51:28] Speaker 2: double whammie. The money that he saved. I mean, Gino
[51:32] Speaker 2: costs more than Sam Donald and DK Metcalf the Steelers,
[51:35] Speaker 2: which honestly to me, have made no sense, Like, hey, guys,
[51:38] Speaker 2: you're not a wide receiver away, let alone a guy
[51:41] Speaker 2: this is his third contract, right, This is not Jamar
[51:45] Speaker 2: Chase or Jefferson or Ceede Lamb. What are these guys
[51:47] Speaker 2: twenty five twenty six going into their second contract you're
[51:50] Speaker 2: trading this guy. I mean most players this is gonna
[51:53] Speaker 2: have four contracts, Like, it's pretty risky for you guys
[51:56] Speaker 2: to make this move with a second round pick, where
[51:58] Speaker 2: you can just find guys like Luther Burden George Pickens.
[52:01] Speaker 2: And that's the other thing they get rid of George Pickens.
[52:03] Speaker 2: Every time I look at the Cowboys, George Pickens is
[52:05] Speaker 2: making place. So you look at the Steelers some terrible
[52:08] Speaker 2: personnel moves, and you look at John Schneider. You know
[52:11] Speaker 2: it goes back to hiring Mike McDonald which it's not
[52:14] Speaker 2: the sexiest thing to hire defensive coaches anymore. Everyone wants
[52:17] Speaker 2: the Kevin O'Connell's, the Sean mcvaz and rightfully so. But
[52:20] Speaker 2: he hired it looks like the right guy, and then
[52:23] Speaker 2: he made incredible personnel moves this offseason. And I anytime
[52:27] Speaker 2: you go on the road against a terrible team, it
[52:30] Speaker 2: didn't really shock me that it was three to three
[52:32] Speaker 2: kind of lifeless environment. It's just it's a tough spot
[52:35] Speaker 2: for any good team. Once you get November December and
[52:38] Speaker 2: you're playing a two to three win team, Like, I
[52:40] Speaker 2: give you a little grace if you're down seven to nothing,
[52:42] Speaker 2: after the first quarter. But then they flip that switch
[52:45] Speaker 2: in the team's speed. It was like, this thing's over
[52:47] Speaker 2: once they score thirteen on answer, You're like, this is
[52:49] Speaker 2: the Titans. Titans are really bad. Like that's that's one
[52:52] Speaker 2: of those jobs that I don't know if I would
[52:55] Speaker 2: leave if I was a coordinator. Yeah, that's pretty risky.
[52:58] Speaker 2: It's that's a place where I know you get more
[53:00] Speaker 2: money to be a head coach, but feels like where
[53:02] Speaker 2: you get your career kind of goes to get derailed.
[53:04] Speaker 1: Okay, Detroit thirty four New York Giants twenty seven in
[53:09] Speaker 1: overtime over one thousand yards of offense. John, I'm gonna
[53:14] Speaker 1: I'm gonna describe this as a bad win for Detroit.
[53:17] Speaker 1: Now Jamiir Gibbs had two hundred and sixty yards of
[53:20] Speaker 1: scrimmage yards saved. He was, I mean he literally he was.
[53:24] Speaker 1: He saved them, but nine penalties surrendered five hundred and
[53:28] Speaker 1: twenty yards. New York dominated time of possession. Jamis Winston
[53:34] Speaker 1: had three hundred and sixty passing yards with no number
[53:36] Speaker 1: one wide receiver. The Lions now Chicago's eight and three,
[53:42] Speaker 1: Green Bay seven and three, Detroit seven and four, and
[53:45] Speaker 1: they still have to face the Bears in Chicago and
[53:47] Speaker 1: the Rams in LA. They are not. The Lions do
[53:51] Speaker 1: not feel as sharp to me, They just don't. They
[53:55] Speaker 1: had to be saved by Jamiir Gibbs. Amaran Saint Brown
[53:58] Speaker 1: had a drop today that never happened. There is a listen.
[54:02] Speaker 1: I love their personnel and I love the culture that
[54:05] Speaker 1: Dan Campbell has created. But the New York Giants multiple
[54:10] Speaker 1: times today, if they had any kind they've got to
[54:13] Speaker 1: make some changes on that staff. Defensively, they couldn't make
[54:18] Speaker 1: any stops today, big holes all through their defense. I
[54:22] Speaker 1: didn't love this for Detroit. I thought it was a
[54:24] Speaker 1: bad win.
[54:25] Speaker 2: Yeah, I think defensively they are a team that you
[54:28] Speaker 2: can't bet on to win. You win the NFC, to
[54:31] Speaker 2: compete for Super Bowl. They're falling apart. I mean for
[54:35] Speaker 2: Jamis Winston, who again, honestly, if he had been the
[54:38] Speaker 2: backup insaid of Russell Wilson, maybe Brian dabol is still
[54:40] Speaker 2: employed by the Giants. I mean they are a functional
[54:43] Speaker 2: offense with him now. Granted he's throwing it to Wan
[54:46] Speaker 2: Dale Robinson, who looks like Odell Beckham in his prime
[54:49] Speaker 2: out there against the Lions, which is really concerning because offensively, obviously,
[54:54] Speaker 2: you know, Gibbs is an elite player at any moment,
[54:56] Speaker 2: a lot like Saquon last year. He can take one
[54:58] Speaker 2: fifty sixty seventy yards. You know, am In Ross Saint
[55:01] Speaker 2: Brown is just he's an exception. He had a huge day,
[55:03] Speaker 2: nine cats from fifty yards. Offense is not gonna be
[55:06] Speaker 2: their issue because he just have too much talent. But
[55:08] Speaker 2: even offensive line today they were kind of they were
[55:10] Speaker 2: getting after golf a little bit. The problem is is,
[55:13] Speaker 2: I don't think they're gonna win the division. So do
[55:16] Speaker 2: you like Jared Goff to go on the road to Philly,
[55:19] Speaker 2: to Green Bay to whoever in the first round. You
[55:22] Speaker 2: can't because outside you talk about Dak Prescott being in
[55:25] Speaker 2: a controlled environment. Jared Goff is even more because Dak
[55:29] Speaker 2: is not the athlete that he once was, but he
[55:30] Speaker 2: still can move a little bit. Jared Goff can't move
[55:32] Speaker 2: at all. So we saw a couple weeks ago. I'm
[55:35] Speaker 2: getting my weeks whenever he played in Philly. I guess
[55:37] Speaker 2: that was last Sunday night. You know it gets cold,
[55:39] Speaker 2: he's got those two gloves on. You're like, this is
[55:42] Speaker 2: not gonna go. Well, he is not comfortable in the cold.
[55:45] Speaker 2: He just isn't that The numbers speak for themselves. So
[55:49] Speaker 2: like you're not gonna be playing the big playoff games
[55:51] Speaker 2: in the Dome like you your chances really were the
[55:54] Speaker 2: last two years. You know, it looked like the Ravens
[55:56] Speaker 2: their windows close, the bills their windows close. The Lions
[55:59] Speaker 2: had a twenty four to seven lead against the forty
[56:01] Speaker 2: nine ers two years ago. Last year they had a
[56:03] Speaker 2: home game against Washington who didn't have that. Now, granted
[56:06] Speaker 2: they had a bunch of injuries, but those two teams
[56:09] Speaker 2: were Taylor made. You know, given their record, what is
[56:13] Speaker 2: this an eleven win team? Like last year they won
[56:16] Speaker 2: what fifteen games? Like this is probably eleven win team.
[56:19] Speaker 1: John We know that Dan Campbell's not a scheme guy.
[56:25] Speaker 1: So when he had a great scheme guy in Ben
[56:28] Speaker 1: Johnson and was been there three years or three or.
[56:32] Speaker 2: He was there the whole time, but he didn't call
[56:33] Speaker 2: plays the whole time.
[56:35] Speaker 1: So when Ben started calling plays, that that's your zenith.
[56:40] Speaker 1: That's when you are at your best, where a culture
[56:43] Speaker 1: creator with a great GM has a brilliant play designer
[56:47] Speaker 1: and play caller. And they had two to three years
[56:49] Speaker 1: of that and they were the talk of the league.
[56:51] Speaker 2: We talked.
[56:51] Speaker 1: I mean, Ben Johnson was off of the Washington job
[56:54] Speaker 1: or the Indie job, and he decided on the plane,
[56:55] Speaker 1: I don't want to take it. And then he goes
[56:57] Speaker 1: and gets the Bears job because he likes Caleb. He
[56:59] Speaker 1: knows that they and so here was a This was
[57:03] Speaker 1: a team that was romanticized. We loved this team. We
[57:07] Speaker 1: loved Ben Johnson. And it does feel like they're not
[57:10] Speaker 1: as sharp offensively. They had to be saved today. They're
[57:14] Speaker 1: not as good defensively. I mean, Aaron Glenn may not
[57:16] Speaker 1: be a great head coach, but fifty top coordinators don't
[57:20] Speaker 1: make it as head coaches. So when I when I
[57:22] Speaker 1: watch them right now, I feel like I'm getting if
[57:26] Speaker 1: last year the fastball, two years ago, the fastball was
[57:30] Speaker 1: ninety nine. Last year it was ninety seven. Now it's
[57:32] Speaker 1: about ninety three. I just think it's hittable. I don't
[57:35] Speaker 1: think they just I mean, listen, they're just too talented
[57:40] Speaker 1: on the offensive side to not score points. Somebody's oh
[57:44] Speaker 1: as hot. But when I watched that game today, I
[57:48] Speaker 1: was like, I thought the Giants had it won.
[57:51] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean the line should have lost, like you said,
[57:54] Speaker 2: I mean gives bailed them out, give save their season,
[57:57] Speaker 2: gives save their season. Now he's an exceptional player, just
[58:00] Speaker 2: save any single game. But it felt like the Lions
[58:02] Speaker 2: were gonna lose that game all of a sudden. Would
[58:04] Speaker 2: they not be a lock to be in the playoffs,
[58:06] Speaker 2: I mean they would be in major, major trouble. I
[58:09] Speaker 2: just think sometimes you have the perfect combination, you know,
[58:12] Speaker 2: to be like having like a General Patton having sealed
[58:15] Speaker 2: team six, like good luck against them. And I think
[58:18] Speaker 2: you know, a couple of years ago, Lamar Jackson had
[58:21] Speaker 2: Mike McDonald as his defensive coordinator with John Harbaugh leading
[58:24] Speaker 2: the troops. It doesn't get any better than that. And
[58:27] Speaker 2: now you look back, it's like, well it's not the same.
[58:29] Speaker 2: You know. Dan Quinn once had Kyle Shanahan his offensive coordinators,
[58:32] Speaker 2: like and they had a lead in the Super Bowl,
[58:34] Speaker 2: like these windows. Most people are not Andy Reid mahomes
[58:38] Speaker 2: where you get time and time again you're in the
[58:40] Speaker 2: Super Bowl. Sometimes you look back and you go, God,
[58:42] Speaker 2: that was our one shot. And it does feel like
[58:45] Speaker 2: the Lions, cause again, Aiden Hutchinson is gonna need a massive,
[58:48] Speaker 2: massive contract. They are paying these guys a lot of money, right,
[58:52] Speaker 2: Jared Goff makes a lot of money. Saint Brown makes
[58:54] Speaker 2: a lot of money. Panee Sewell makes a lot of money.
[58:58] Speaker 2: Jamiir Gibbs is going to need a contract. You know. Laporta, now,
[59:02] Speaker 2: who was an exceptional player, just had back surgery. I
[59:05] Speaker 2: love watching the guy. I keep my fingers crossed. But
[59:07] Speaker 2: you never know how guys respond to back surgery. You
[59:10] Speaker 2: just things change really really fast. So I as a
[59:14] Speaker 2: fan of the Lions and kind of what they stood for,
[59:16] Speaker 2: it feels dramatically different this year, he said, personnel wise,
[59:20] Speaker 2: and definitely coaching wise.
[59:21] Speaker 1: No Jackson Dart, no Scataboo, no Molik Neighbors. The Giants
[59:26] Speaker 1: had five hundred and seventeen yards, dominate time of possession,
[59:31] Speaker 1: twenty five first downs, fifty percent on third down. Like,
[59:35] Speaker 1: I'm sorry, that's that's awful. And Jamis is weird. I
[59:40] Speaker 1: mean he's just such a bizarre I mean he really
[59:42] Speaker 1: he made a couple throws. I mean he's always been
[59:45] Speaker 1: one of those guys. He and Marcus Mariota came out.
[59:48] Speaker 1: They were the top two quarterbacks. Mariota more of a
[59:50] Speaker 1: runner than a thrower. Jamis was a pure thrower, but
[59:53] Speaker 1: he was an interception machine. He's always been productive nobody
[59:56] Speaker 1: and he's got kind of a spirit and a joyfulness
[59:58] Speaker 1: that he's like easy to root for. I watched games.
[1:00:00] Speaker 1: I'm wildly entertaining.
[1:00:01] Speaker 2: Same. Can those guys be any more polar Opsit either
[1:00:04] Speaker 2: Marks Barry Otis says nothing. He's a dink and dunk quarterback.
[1:00:07] Speaker 2: Jamis never stops talking and flings it fifty yards down
[1:00:10] Speaker 2: the field every play.
[1:00:12] Speaker 1: Just just a wild But I Detroit just feels like
[1:00:15] Speaker 1: it's a very hittable fastball. And that's what I feel
[1:00:18] Speaker 1: like now, and that's what I Listen, John, this was
[1:00:20] Speaker 1: this was my off season.
[1:00:22] Speaker 2: Bitch.
[1:00:23] Speaker 1: When you lose two elite coordinators, they had coaching jobs,
[1:00:27] Speaker 1: you have to leave the building. You can't hire both
[1:00:31] Speaker 1: guys in the building. It's one thing, by the way,
[1:00:34] Speaker 1: if you had the next McVeigh behind Ben Johnson, but
[1:00:37] Speaker 1: you lose Ben, you just go to a guy in
[1:00:39] Speaker 1: the building. And I say this because I've worked in
[1:00:41] Speaker 1: newsrooms for years and years and we would lose a
[1:00:43] Speaker 1: news director and it was like, we'll go get the
[1:00:46] Speaker 1: best news director. The assistant news director who's been the
[1:00:49] Speaker 1: nine years is the news director. If he was that ambitious,
[1:00:52] Speaker 1: he would have left us and gotten a news director job.
[1:00:54] Speaker 1: Like so, just always like giving it to the guy
[1:00:56] Speaker 1: in the building. I'm not a fan of that. I've
[1:00:58] Speaker 1: seen too many college football programs do the same, where
[1:01:01] Speaker 1: they hire the popular assistant or coordinator. Ninety percent of
[1:01:03] Speaker 1: the time, it never works.
[1:01:05] Speaker 2: You know, you look at these three teams, the Lions,
[1:01:07] Speaker 2: the Bears, and the Packers, you know, looking at their schedules.
[1:01:10] Speaker 2: The Bear still they got to play the Eagles, they
[1:01:12] Speaker 2: got to play the forty nine Ers, they got to
[1:01:13] Speaker 2: play the Packers twice. The Lions play the Packers this week,
[1:01:16] Speaker 2: and then the Packers obviously the Bears twice. I can
[1:01:19] Speaker 2: see this thing going any all three directions. I think
[1:01:22] Speaker 2: the most pressure given that they made that trade and
[1:01:24] Speaker 2: they paid Micah. I think you'd be hard pressed to
[1:01:28] Speaker 2: feel good about yourself if you're the Packers and you know,
[1:01:29] Speaker 2: win this division. I think the pressure solely on them.
[1:01:32] Speaker 2: The Bears, You're kind of like they're in the casino
[1:01:35] Speaker 2: right now and they've won a lot of hands of
[1:01:37] Speaker 2: blackjack and they only came in with one hundred dollars
[1:01:39] Speaker 2: and they look down. They got a five k next
[1:01:40] Speaker 2: on them they're playing with a little house money, right, Yeah,
[1:01:43] Speaker 2: they have the least amount of pressure on them, right,
[1:01:45] Speaker 2: But you go eight and three, you know, you can't
[1:01:48] Speaker 2: just end the season nine and eight. So there's the
[1:01:50] Speaker 2: pressure of okay that you get a wild card. But
[1:01:54] Speaker 2: the pressure is squarely on the Lions Dan Campbell, this
[1:01:57] Speaker 2: high price roster, and the Packers. One of those two
[1:01:59] Speaker 2: teams has to win the division. If the Bears do,
[1:02:02] Speaker 2: something's gonna happen somewhere.
[1:02:04] Speaker 1: Well, and also the Bears, as you and I watched today,
[1:02:08] Speaker 1: the Bears are getting better and that's CALO's best game.
[1:02:11] Speaker 1: Detroit's going the opposite direction, you know, like if you
[1:02:13] Speaker 1: have an average boss, you get worse over time.
[1:02:16] Speaker 2: Yeah.
[1:02:16] Speaker 1: Like I feel like Detroit had a couple of really
[1:02:19] Speaker 1: good weeks, but I don't feel like consistently I get
[1:02:21] Speaker 1: a good effort from Detroit. I always feel one side
[1:02:23] Speaker 1: of the ball or the other disappoints me. I think
[1:02:25] Speaker 1: Chicago's feeling different.
[1:02:27] Speaker 2: Well, the other two teams have it, you know, the
[1:02:28] Speaker 2: Packers Half Lee calling the defense, La floors the offense, right,
[1:02:32] Speaker 2: the Bears, Ben Johnson the offense's baby Dennis. He doesn't
[1:02:35] Speaker 2: even mess with Dennis Allen and listen, their defensive personnel
[1:02:37] Speaker 2: is not great. They create a lot of turnovers. You
[1:02:40] Speaker 2: got Campbell who was yanking to play calling back. I
[1:02:44] Speaker 2: look today, you know he didn't have the glasses on,
[1:02:46] Speaker 2: so it's like, is he letting the other guy call plays?
[1:02:48] Speaker 2: It didn't necessarily matter because the offense was humming. But
[1:02:51] Speaker 2: obviously defensively, you know, Aaron Glenn could just kind of rout.
[1:02:55] Speaker 2: He just had a lot more experience than the young
[1:02:57] Speaker 2: guy Kelvin Sheppard this year, who like, they just have
[1:02:59] Speaker 2: a lot of injuries. And I've kind of theorized I
[1:03:02] Speaker 2: think that the forty nine ers, I think that the Bears,
[1:03:06] Speaker 2: I think the Lions. Those programs like to run the ball.
[1:03:10] Speaker 2: I think it wears on you in practice. You know,
[1:03:12] Speaker 2: back in the eighties and nineties, guys were much more callous.
[1:03:15] Speaker 2: Do you had double days? I think now in the NFL,
[1:03:17] Speaker 2: some of these teams that practice hard throughout the season,
[1:03:19] Speaker 2: the players, there's not like a build up over time.
[1:03:22] Speaker 2: And I think there might be a little correlation because
[1:03:24] Speaker 2: the Lions and the forty nine ers, two teams that
[1:03:26] Speaker 2: want to run the ball, they have a ton of
[1:03:28] Speaker 2: injuries every single year, and I just wonder if they
[1:03:30] Speaker 2: practice like pretty physical. And I don't know that there's
[1:03:33] Speaker 2: not a right or wrong way to do it, but man,
[1:03:36] Speaker 2: these teams have a lot of injuries every single year
[1:03:38] Speaker 2: coming down the stretch.
[1:03:47] Speaker 1: All right, two college topics to finish, this will take
[1:03:50] Speaker 1: ten to fifteen minutes. Number one USC in another big game.
[1:03:56] Speaker 1: We all knew the three biggest games for USC this year.
[1:03:59] Speaker 1: At Illinois they surrendered over five hundred yards. At Notre
[1:04:03] Speaker 1: Dame they gave up four hundred and forty two yards,
[1:04:06] Speaker 1: and at Oregon they gave up forty two points four
[1:04:09] Speaker 1: hundred and thirty six yards, and the Ducks were missing
[1:04:11] Speaker 1: their top three receivers. So once again, here we are
[1:04:16] Speaker 1: in year four, and every time USC is in one
[1:04:20] Speaker 1: of these big games, those three are all on the road.
[1:04:24] Speaker 1: They're a very mediocre defense, they're special teams in big games.
[1:04:29] Speaker 1: A wrack, totally inconsistent. And it was interesting I saw
[1:04:33] Speaker 1: a quote after this loss and Lincoln Riley once again
[1:04:37] Speaker 1: really kind of snippy with media, very kind of snarky,
[1:04:42] Speaker 1: and you know, just not able to get through a
[1:04:48] Speaker 1: press conference with any pointed criticism or anybody questioning anything.
[1:04:53] Speaker 1: His quote was we're very, very close. So they carry
[1:04:56] Speaker 1: them all twenty seven times for fifty two yards. What
[1:04:59] Speaker 1: do you think Smart would say four years in if
[1:05:03] Speaker 1: his Bulldogs had twenty seven carries for fifty two yards
[1:05:05] Speaker 1: in a big game, he would be embarrassed to say
[1:05:09] Speaker 1: we're close. He would be freaking on fire. He would
[1:05:15] Speaker 1: be lamenting the physicality he would call on his team.
[1:05:19] Speaker 1: I just think four years in, I know Lincoln's smart.
[1:05:24] Speaker 1: I know he's a good offensive coach. I know he's
[1:05:26] Speaker 1: taken Jade and myav from a reckless UNLV player to
[1:05:29] Speaker 1: like a second round, third round quarterback draft pick. But
[1:05:33] Speaker 1: I'm watching another big game with USC and they're not close. Defensively,
[1:05:38] Speaker 1: they're not close. First three years, he didn't recruit Southern
[1:05:41] Speaker 1: California efficiently. I mean, he's not gonna They're not letting
[1:05:46] Speaker 1: him go. But it's frustrating to hear right now their
[1:05:50] Speaker 1: ball proposition, the projection is BYU. Now what USC fan
[1:05:57] Speaker 1: wants to play BYU in a ballgame and be satisfied
[1:06:00] Speaker 1: with that?
[1:06:01] Speaker 2: I think the hard thing, too, is that Bred venables
[1:06:03] Speaker 2: and the Oklahoma is sixty minutes away from being in
[1:06:07] Speaker 2: the College Football Playoff and Bred Venables is a good example. Right,
[1:06:11] Speaker 2: He's a defensive guy. His defense dominates and there's a
[1:06:14] Speaker 2: toughness to his team, and they have a clear identity
[1:06:17] Speaker 2: if usc and that was I mean, did you think
[1:06:20] Speaker 2: they had any chance on the road at Oregon? Because not.
[1:06:23] Speaker 2: I feel if they played Let's take Oregon and Notre Dame,
[1:06:25] Speaker 2: two playoff teams. Oregon's obviously had some injuries. Notre Dame
[1:06:29] Speaker 2: looks fantastic. If they play those two teams ten times,
[1:06:32] Speaker 2: I think they lose nine times to both teams. It's football.
[1:06:35] Speaker 2: It's a one game scenario. Maybe you fumble a couple
[1:06:38] Speaker 2: of times, get a pick. Weird things happen, but they
[1:06:41] Speaker 2: aren't even remotely close to those two teams that when
[1:06:44] Speaker 2: you hired Lincoln Riley and the Hoopla and I bought it.
[1:06:46] Speaker 2: I said, hey, that's a coup. Like what you got
[1:06:49] Speaker 2: this guy to come, It's going to be awesome. You're
[1:06:52] Speaker 2: four years in and you're watching these playoff teams. Okay,
[1:06:56] Speaker 2: they have a great recruiting class in twenty twenty six,
[1:06:58] Speaker 2: Well what took so long? Yeah, So going into the
[1:07:01] Speaker 2: fifth year, we finally have the number one or two
[1:07:03] Speaker 2: recruiting class. I heard something maybe with Bruce Feldman mentioned
[1:07:08] Speaker 2: this that Oregon now, granted they have been a better
[1:07:11] Speaker 2: program for a while, but part of bringing Lincoln back.
[1:07:14] Speaker 2: And this is what you know. USC fans like yourself
[1:07:17] Speaker 2: want the Pete Carroll days. Well, Oregon looks like that
[1:07:20] Speaker 2: version in USC just looks like an average, you know,
[1:07:23] Speaker 2: eight nine win college football team. They look you could
[1:07:26] Speaker 2: replace USC with just Arizona or you know, just a
[1:07:30] Speaker 2: random program. That's what a random program looks like, not
[1:07:33] Speaker 2: someone that you gave one hundred and twenty million dollars
[1:07:35] Speaker 2: to and have unlimited in il Now.
[1:07:37] Speaker 1: John, they didn't have to play Indiana this year, they
[1:07:40] Speaker 1: didn't have to play Indiana last year. They didn't have
[1:07:43] Speaker 1: to play Ohio State this year or last year. And
[1:07:46] Speaker 1: they got Harbaugh out of the conference before they joined.
[1:07:49] Speaker 1: This could be so much worse. They've gotten complete breaks.
[1:07:53] Speaker 1: They got Penn State once at home. They got Harbaugh's replacement.
[1:07:59] Speaker 1: We don't know if he's the guy. They didn't face
[1:08:01] Speaker 1: the buck guys of the Hoosiers. So next year they
[1:08:04] Speaker 1: face Ohio State and Oregon and Washington and Penn State
[1:08:09] Speaker 1: and Indiana and Notre Dame. So now they get several
[1:08:13] Speaker 1: at home. But it's just four years in. When they
[1:08:19] Speaker 1: play elite teams, especially on the road, special teams are
[1:08:25] Speaker 1: often a disaster and the defense is completely mediocre. That
[1:08:30] Speaker 1: is the reality. They're pretty good at home. I mean
[1:08:33] Speaker 1: they played really different football at home because they're comfortable.
[1:08:37] Speaker 1: Well that's the Big Ten. The SEC road games are
[1:08:43] Speaker 1: discomfort That's how you win in the SEC and the
[1:08:47] Speaker 1: Big Ten. Ohio State can go into Penn State and win.
[1:08:52] Speaker 1: It's not about winning the comfortable games. So I you know,
[1:08:58] Speaker 1: and I'm I am surprised at how efficient and how
[1:09:03] Speaker 1: successful Oklahoma's been because Brett Venables had never been a
[1:09:07] Speaker 1: head coach, and he was a defensive coach. And the
[1:09:08] Speaker 1: whole world now moves. The rules are all helping offense.
[1:09:12] Speaker 1: But I think at this point, four years in with
[1:09:14] Speaker 1: USC to say we're close, if you face the Buckeyes
[1:09:21] Speaker 1: both years, you'd have two more devastating blowout losses. You're
[1:09:24] Speaker 1: not close.
[1:09:26] Speaker 2: I like Dan Lanning. He seems like a really impressive guy.
[1:09:29] Speaker 2: He took over kind of a ready made operation. I'd
[1:09:33] Speaker 2: say the same thing. I would imagine Chip would admit
[1:09:35] Speaker 2: to this too. Now Dan took him to another level.
[1:09:38] Speaker 2: The Mario just like Chip took him to another level
[1:09:40] Speaker 2: from Blotti. But those things Okay, they went from the
[1:09:44] Speaker 2: seventeenth ranked team to the fourth ranked team. Right, it's
[1:09:46] Speaker 2: a lot different. Lincoln Riley took over Oklahoma, it was
[1:09:50] Speaker 2: a lot like Dan Lanning kind of Taylor made now
[1:09:52] Speaker 2: he took it to another level than Stoops had had him.
[1:09:55] Speaker 2: But that's it's a good landing spot for a job, right,
[1:09:58] Speaker 2: take over Arkansas tomorrow. If I'm Dan Lanning in four years,
[1:10:02] Speaker 2: would he be? I don't know. You know, Lincoln came
[1:10:05] Speaker 2: to USC like that was a very challenging job, right,
[1:10:09] Speaker 2: and a small percentage of guys right in the if
[1:10:13] Speaker 2: you I don't know if Kirby fits the LA kind
[1:10:15] Speaker 2: of ethos, but any good code urban nick, like a
[1:10:19] Speaker 2: high level coach would be able to handle it. But
[1:10:21] Speaker 2: not everyone can. And there's a level of to me,
[1:10:24] Speaker 2: it's there's a craziness to you. You can't just be like, oh,
[1:10:27] Speaker 2: I have a lot of offensive ingenuity, create plays. Okay,
[1:10:30] Speaker 2: there's a lot more to that. You'd be able to
[1:10:33] Speaker 2: score points any college you're coaching. What about the culture
[1:10:37] Speaker 2: you set in practice of physicality, because that's how it's
[1:10:39] Speaker 2: going to translate in this conference. In a lot of
[1:10:42] Speaker 2: places that come October, let alone November, the weather's not
[1:10:45] Speaker 2: gonna be great and it might not be freezing cold,
[1:10:48] Speaker 2: but you're gonna have to play kind of tough bully ball.
[1:10:49] Speaker 2: Well that's not really how Lincoln wants to play. Why, Well,
[1:10:52] Speaker 2: who taught Lincoln Riley how to coach football? Mike Leach
[1:10:54] Speaker 2: once upon a time. That's like his roots and what
[1:10:57] Speaker 2: was Mike Leach who got to higher highs or as
[1:11:00] Speaker 2: equal Like one thing he struggled with that Lincoln struggles
[1:11:03] Speaker 2: with is just defensive guys because the style of offense
[1:11:06] Speaker 2: it doesn't really create a physical element or what Dan
[1:11:09] Speaker 2: Lanning knows. He knows Nick Saban and he knows Kirby
[1:11:12] Speaker 2: Smart what their ethos is. That there's a toughness to
[1:11:14] Speaker 2: their team. You see it when you watch them play.
[1:11:17] Speaker 2: It's why they've transitioned and will transition perfectly with Ohio State.
[1:11:21] Speaker 2: Indie like their culture is that Michigan like they are
[1:11:25] Speaker 2: the same. So when I watch Lincoln Riley, you know
[1:11:28] Speaker 2: Pete Carroll's greatness was physicality and defense. Now, I think
[1:11:32] Speaker 2: when most people just know Matt Lioner, Reggie Bush but
[1:11:34] Speaker 2: they were defined by their defensive draft picks pros.
[1:11:39] Speaker 1: They had four linebacker Clay Matthews couldn't start. I mean,
[1:11:42] Speaker 1: they were just rivers of mal Luga and everybody was.
[1:11:46] Speaker 1: They were just so good within the front seven.
[1:11:49] Speaker 2: Yeah, I just I just think it's going to be very,
[1:11:51] Speaker 2: very challenging. He's lucky Jim's gone because Michigan wouldn't have
[1:11:55] Speaker 2: and who knows, maybe they upset on how State can,
[1:11:57] Speaker 2: but how do they match? Like Signetti clearly listen, I
[1:12:01] Speaker 2: know he rubbed me wrong at first with it, but
[1:12:03] Speaker 2: he's backed it up. He's clearly a tough guy. You know,
[1:12:06] Speaker 2: he's he's he's a tough guy. Like you can't. I've
[1:12:09] Speaker 2: always said that you can't fake it. You either are
[1:12:11] Speaker 2: you aren't. And some offensive guys just aren't, you know.
[1:12:15] Speaker 2: But like I don't think Sean McVeigh would be known
[1:12:17] Speaker 2: as like the toughest guy in the block. But he
[1:12:20] Speaker 2: really values defense, drafting those guys, investing in those guys,
[1:12:25] Speaker 2: and it's something that he emphasizes, right, And it just
[1:12:27] Speaker 2: feels like when you watch Lincoln Riley's teams, like you
[1:12:30] Speaker 2: can't convince me that they emphasize that that part of
[1:12:32] Speaker 2: the ball. You can't just because you pay a defensive
[1:12:34] Speaker 2: coordinator a lot of money, that doesn't solve your problems.
[1:12:38] Speaker 1: Yeah, and I think they went heavy into the NIL,
[1:12:42] Speaker 1: spent their money poorly in some instances outside of Jade
[1:12:45] Speaker 1: Mayava and Caleb Williams and Jordan Addison, and they neglected
[1:12:49] Speaker 1: Southern California recruiting in that big pursuit of NIL players.
[1:12:53] Speaker 1: And they have kind of a I mean, I mean
[1:12:56] Speaker 1: their defense, they were missing Kamari Ramsey this weekend. They
[1:13:00] Speaker 1: just don't have They don't have any high level pros.
[1:13:03] Speaker 1: I mean it's at their offense is Makay Lemon and
[1:13:05] Speaker 1: Jade Myovitz a two man offense. So they just don't
[1:13:08] Speaker 1: have enough talent. And that is over spending in NIL
[1:13:12] Speaker 1: and spending poorly and under recruiting Southern California. Former USC
[1:13:17] Speaker 1: coach briefly Lane Kiffen this and nobody exits quite like Lane.
[1:13:22] Speaker 1: You know, the Tennessee situation like they wanted to burn
[1:13:27] Speaker 1: his house down. The Raiders was messy. USC got fired
[1:13:31] Speaker 1: in a tarmac. I was listening to Rick Neuheisel joke
[1:13:34] Speaker 1: about it this week. He nobody leaves and exits worse
[1:13:38] Speaker 1: than Lane. Kiffen to me, stay at ol MISS or
[1:13:41] Speaker 1: go pro. I just think for me, I don't want
[1:13:44] Speaker 1: to bounce around a conference. If you can make twelve million,
[1:13:47] Speaker 1: old Miss, I'll take that over the sixteen million at LSU.
[1:13:50] Speaker 1: The governor's involved in LSU. The pressure is much greater
[1:13:53] Speaker 1: at LSU. Here's what I believe to be true. Lane
[1:13:57] Speaker 1: knows that high school players IL recruits will follow an
[1:14:02] Speaker 1: offensive coach. He'll go to the whiteboard and he'll sit
[1:14:05] Speaker 1: down with quarterbacks, tight ends, tackles and receivers, backs and
[1:14:10] Speaker 1: draw up plays. Offensive players follow the coach. Defensive players
[1:14:15] Speaker 1: go to the five or six Clemson, Georgia, Notre Dame,
[1:14:20] Speaker 1: Ohio State. Defensive players aren't as likely to follow coaches
[1:14:23] Speaker 1: in schemes. They want to go get paid at Texas
[1:14:26] Speaker 1: right or at Georgia. Here Clemson, that's right. Lane can
[1:14:30] Speaker 1: get those players there. Lane doesn't think consistently, I believe
[1:14:34] Speaker 1: that he can get elite five star defensive in the
[1:14:39] Speaker 1: box players. He knows he can get them offensively. Where
[1:14:42] Speaker 1: he go back to USC and get him it doesn't matter.
[1:14:45] Speaker 1: And so to me, I think Lane's certainly good enough
[1:14:48] Speaker 1: to do NFL but I think the Lane has proven
[1:14:50] Speaker 1: over time that when you put him in pressure situations,
[1:14:54] Speaker 1: he's he doesn't have a filter, he didn't have a governor.
[1:14:57] Speaker 1: He can be a little bit snarky and off putting
[1:15:01] Speaker 1: and needs to put his phone down probably more often.
[1:15:04] Speaker 1: In the end, I think Ole Miss is a great fit,
[1:15:06] Speaker 1: and I think he'd be excellent in certain NFL cities
[1:15:08] Speaker 1: like Arizona where he could go back west, not high pressure.
[1:15:12] Speaker 1: They'd be, you know, an offensive coach with McVeigh and Shanahan.
[1:15:17] Speaker 1: What do you think happens, Well.
[1:15:18] Speaker 2: I think he feels, you know, he's mastered this college
[1:15:21] Speaker 2: thing because he goes We just had the greatest three
[1:15:23] Speaker 2: years in the history of the program at Old Miss,
[1:15:25] Speaker 2: and it's because of me. Like Lane's feeling himself right
[1:15:28] Speaker 2: now pretty big so and I don't blame him. I
[1:15:31] Speaker 2: mean what he's done at Ole Miss is pretty remarkable.
[1:15:33] Speaker 2: But when I see a lot of people saying he
[1:15:35] Speaker 2: can't leave because they're not going to let him coach
[1:15:36] Speaker 2: the playoffs by all accounts in all reports, right, So
[1:15:39] Speaker 2: if they win against Missippi State, he's gonna leave, Like
[1:15:42] Speaker 2: that will be it. Now. If he loses and leaves
[1:15:45] Speaker 2: Ole Miss misses the playoffs, it would get as ugly
[1:15:49] Speaker 2: of an ending as he had in Tennessee. I mean,
[1:15:51] Speaker 2: it would be pretty Remember Nick Savid told him to
[1:15:54] Speaker 2: pack his bags and get the hell out of there
[1:15:55] Speaker 2: going into the National Championship game. But by all reports,
[1:16:00] Speaker 2: and it looks like he's going to LSU. And I
[1:16:02] Speaker 2: understand because I think he goes, this is not a
[1:16:05] Speaker 2: sustainable thing at ole Miss, because they're changing the nil
[1:16:08] Speaker 2: at least, you know, we'll see if it holds. But
[1:16:11] Speaker 2: you're not just gonna be able to buy players like
[1:16:13] Speaker 2: ole Miss has been doing. They have been the leader
[1:16:16] Speaker 2: on the front of just buying guys and lanes on
[1:16:18] Speaker 2: the right guys. Lane's talent acquisition and I would say
[1:16:22] Speaker 2: talent evaluation has been pretty lights out. I mean, from
[1:16:26] Speaker 2: Walter Nolan last year to this Division two quarterback he is,
[1:16:30] Speaker 2: so he goes, you put me at LSU. You put
[1:16:33] Speaker 2: me you know, if Kaylin Dubore were to go to
[1:16:35] Speaker 2: Penn State, you know's some rumors out there on that one.
[1:16:37] Speaker 2: He's just going I will have the best roster. I'll
[1:16:40] Speaker 2: just have Ohio State two point zero in the South.
[1:16:43] Speaker 2: And so to me, it does feel like he's gonna leave.
[1:16:45] Speaker 2: I do think this thing is gonna be ugly. Don't
[1:16:48] Speaker 2: necessarily blame him. I understand people in the South, you know,
[1:16:54] Speaker 2: kind of especially if you're an old misfan, think you're
[1:16:56] Speaker 2: getting screwed. But up until three years ago before Nil, well,
[1:17:00] Speaker 2: there's not a coach alive that would a state at
[1:17:02] Speaker 2: Old Miss over going to LSU or Florida. Right, So
[1:17:05] Speaker 2: this has changed recently, and maybe he knows that this
[1:17:08] Speaker 2: is not a sustainable model the way it is, but
[1:17:11] Speaker 2: only Lane Kiffen can create this type drama. I also
[1:17:14] Speaker 2: will defend. You know, people go, well, how are you
[1:17:17] Speaker 2: leaving a team that has a chance to win the
[1:17:19] Speaker 2: national championship? My pushback would be Ole Miss has no chance.
[1:17:22] Speaker 2: Their defense isn't good. No team in college or the
[1:17:25] Speaker 2: NFL can win and win a championship with a bad defense.
[1:17:28] Speaker 2: Now can they win a playoff game? Absolutely, But are
[1:17:31] Speaker 2: they going to win four straight games? I mean, look
[1:17:33] Speaker 2: at the two teams last year in the night where
[1:17:34] Speaker 2: Ohio State and Notre Dame defense matters Texas Georgia. Look
[1:17:38] Speaker 2: look at the teams making Penn State runs last year. Defense.
[1:17:41] Speaker 2: His defense isn't good, so he knows that like this
[1:17:44] Speaker 2: might be as good as it gets. Now listen the
[1:17:48] Speaker 2: timing and I this thing is going to be a
[1:17:50] Speaker 2: shit show here come Friday, because they play the Egg
[1:17:53] Speaker 2: Bowl on Friday. You know all this stuff. I mean,
[1:17:55] Speaker 2: is there an announcement the moment that game ends if
[1:17:58] Speaker 2: they win that Lane Kiffin has agreed to a ded
[1:18:00] Speaker 2: with LSU feels like Jimmy Sexton's kind of being the
[1:18:02] Speaker 2: puppet master here the SEC, the O, the other thing
[1:18:06] Speaker 2: Colin all these schools like the NFL, right, the SEC,
[1:18:10] Speaker 2: they're all in business together and they have a historic
[1:18:13] Speaker 2: television deal making seventy five eighty million dollars a year.
[1:18:16] Speaker 2: Say no different in the NFL, right, the Rams and
[1:18:19] Speaker 2: the Niners and the Steelers and the Ravens, they're all
[1:18:21] Speaker 2: in business together. Yet they all work together like you
[1:18:24] Speaker 2: can't the Giants just because they have Jackson Dark can't
[1:18:27] Speaker 2: just go steal McVeigh or Kyle right because they're all
[1:18:29] Speaker 2: under the same umbrella. Yet in college athletics, the SEC,
[1:18:34] Speaker 2: the two other SEC schools that look down upon Ole
[1:18:37] Speaker 2: miss are trying to steal their coach. So you know,
[1:18:40] Speaker 2: I hear all this stuff about the business model. You
[1:18:42] Speaker 2: could argue, it's all out of whack. You can just
[1:18:44] Speaker 2: steal coordinators. When USC needed a coordinator, what did they do?
[1:18:47] Speaker 2: They just took UCLAs. If I just need a defensive coordinator,
[1:18:50] Speaker 2: I just can't steal Robert Sala from the forty nine ers.
[1:18:53] Speaker 2: It doesn't work that way. So whenever I hear about
[1:18:56] Speaker 2: the business one thing college athletics, whenever they do get
[1:18:58] Speaker 2: to kind of the NFL version of wherever they end up,
[1:19:01] Speaker 2: there has to be some sort of if you're under
[1:19:03] Speaker 2: contract with me, right, you can't just steal go to
[1:19:07] Speaker 2: That's not the way it works. There's a you know,
[1:19:10] Speaker 2: another broadcast network can't just steal Colin Coward. If I'm
[1:19:14] Speaker 2: under contract with you, I can't just go to someone else,
[1:19:16] Speaker 2: a podcast network steal me. That's not the way business works.
[1:19:19] Speaker 2: Yet in college it's like, yeah, I'm LSU, I plan
[1:19:23] Speaker 2: on stealing you before the playoffs even start. Like that's
[1:19:26] Speaker 2: just their own business models a little out of whack.
[1:19:28] Speaker 2: Given the numbers in which they're now generating, they got
[1:19:31] Speaker 2: to figure that out.
[1:19:32] Speaker 1: Yeah, well, I mean they listen. It's they didn't play
[1:19:35] Speaker 1: the same number of I mean SEC for years didn't
[1:19:38] Speaker 1: play the same number of conference games as other conferences,
[1:19:40] Speaker 1: so they can't get their schedule. You know, that's a
[1:19:44] Speaker 1: podcast all onto itself. So all right, hard rock bet.
[1:19:50] Speaker 1: I like Carolina plus seven. The two dogs I like
[1:19:54] Speaker 1: this week were Dallas that was the one blazing five
[1:19:57] Speaker 1: pick that I left on the edit room floor, or
[1:20:00] Speaker 1: I like Carolina plus seven. First of all, they've been
[1:20:04] Speaker 1: a pretty good road team. Second of all, offensively, t
[1:20:08] Speaker 1: mac is a star. He is a bona fide number one.
[1:20:11] Speaker 1: Bryce Young has played well at home and on the road.
[1:20:14] Speaker 1: The team is playing well, and I think if you
[1:20:17] Speaker 1: go look at the Niners this year after wins, they've
[1:20:20] Speaker 1: been wildly uneven. They've played some of their worst games
[1:20:25] Speaker 1: this year. At just the moment, you feel they're focused
[1:20:29] Speaker 1: in getting it back together. So everybody now is all
[1:20:32] Speaker 1: in on the Niners. But now they're healthier. But seven points,
[1:20:37] Speaker 1: I mean, look around the league today. That Pittsburgh Chicago
[1:20:41] Speaker 1: game went down to the end, there were very few
[1:20:43] Speaker 1: Seattle Tennessee was tight touchdowns, a lot of points. Carolina
[1:20:48] Speaker 1: fighting for a playoff spot. I'm taking the Panthers to
[1:20:53] Speaker 1: keep it within a field goal though the Niners win
[1:20:56] Speaker 1: at home.
[1:20:57] Speaker 2: Yeah, I'm with you with the Panthers and the points.
[1:21:00] Speaker 2: I do like the Niners to win this game. They're
[1:21:01] Speaker 2: a bright light primetime team. Kyle Shanahan usually does his
[1:21:05] Speaker 2: best work on primetime. But Nick Bosa, Fred Warner, they're
[1:21:09] Speaker 2: missing a lot of bodies that they can't stop a soul.
[1:21:12] Speaker 2: I like the Niners to win this thing. About thirty
[1:21:14] Speaker 2: five to thirty.
[1:21:15] Speaker 1: Well, we discussed a lot wild win for the Cowboys
[1:21:18] Speaker 1: and the Bears. The Vikings are in trouble. We're not
[1:21:22] Speaker 1: sure what to make of the Lions, the Packers. Shudure
[1:21:25] Speaker 1: probably better than most thought. Good for him, John Izolis,
[1:21:29] Speaker 1: what a crush. Let's go watch the Rams and Bucks.
[1:21:31] Speaker 2: See you con
