Colin’s joined by Danny Parkins, host of “First Things First” on FS1. Colin kicks it off by explaining that his best indicator for the health of the economy is how full airline flights and how expensive the seats are, and Danny counters that if groceries or rent feel overly expensive that it’s a pretty sure sign of a rougher economy (2:30). They pivot to Bam Adebayo’s historical 83 point game for the Heat, and Colin argues that the fan blowback wouldn’t be nearly as pronounced if he was more of a flashy type of star player, but Danny argues HOW Bam got the record matters and how he got it didn’t sit right because the game stopped becoming basketball to get him extra chances (13:15). They dive into how LeBron has been typecast as the guy that makes everything work regardless of his teammates… until now that he’s playing with Luka Doncic and they don’t gel (26:00). They discuss the Bears 9.5 win total and whether taking the over is easy money (32:00). Finally, they recap watching the movie “One Battle After Another” and Colin argues that Sean Penn is the best American actor and Danny counters with Leonardo DiCaprio (34:00). [0:03] Speaker 2: Today's show is brought to you by are presenting sponsor
[0:06] Speaker 2: American Beverage. If you think about some of the most
[0:08] Speaker 2: iconic drinks in the country, the ones you grab a barbecue,
[0:12] Speaker 2: the ones you raised to celebrate your team, that have
[0:15] Speaker 2: been part of your story for decades, Coke, Doctor Pepper, Pepsi,
[0:18] Speaker 2: There's something people don't always think about. The companies behind
[0:21] Speaker 2: those brands are still making their drinks right here in
[0:23] Speaker 2: the US. While there's a lot of talk about bringing
[0:25] Speaker 2: manufacturing back, America's beverage companies never left their American companies,
[0:29] Speaker 2: making American products with American workers in America's hometown. So
[0:32] Speaker 2: two hundred and seventy five thousand men and women across
[0:35] Speaker 2: all fifty states, real jobs, good paying jobs, the kind
[0:38] Speaker 2: of jobs you can raise a family on. So more
[0:39] Speaker 2: than one hundred years, those brands have been part of
[0:42] Speaker 2: everyday lives and they're still here, still investing, still operating
[0:45] Speaker 2: in communities around the country. So if you care about
[0:47] Speaker 2: strong old economies and companies that walk the walk, check
[0:50] Speaker 2: out the good work and what they're doing it. We
[0:52] Speaker 2: deliver for America dot Org. All right, Danny Parkins, you
[1:03] Speaker 2: know him, You love him, I'm going to start because
[1:07] Speaker 2: I'm making my summer vacation plans and stuff, you know.
[1:13] Speaker 2: And you know, because both of us, we can't take
[1:17] Speaker 2: any time off during the football season, so you got
[1:19] Speaker 2: to take all your vacation time in the summer, which
[1:21] Speaker 2: is harder because that's when most people take time off,
[1:23] Speaker 2: so it's harder to find good flights. So you know
[1:26] Speaker 2: how I always I always talked about this, like with
[1:29] Speaker 2: my wife. You know, there's always this debate. Is the
[1:32] Speaker 2: economy good?
[1:33] Speaker 1: Is it bad? How?
[1:34] Speaker 2: What's the indicators? Is it an inflation? Is it the
[1:36] Speaker 2: stock market? Is the housing market? And I've always kind
[1:40] Speaker 2: of I remember years and years ago when I would
[1:43] Speaker 2: come to Chicago, somebody at ESPN gave me a driver,
[1:48] Speaker 2: gave me a number for a driver. It was Bernie Mack,
[1:51] Speaker 2: the Lake Comedians driver. So he used to tell me
[1:54] Speaker 2: just hilarious Bernie Mack stories. Who I love Bernie Mac. Wow,
[1:58] Speaker 2: that's awesome. Yeah, he was just he just told because
[2:02] Speaker 2: I loved Bernie and Ocean's eleven at the time had
[2:04] Speaker 2: come out, and I just I couldn't get enough Bernie
[2:06] Speaker 2: Mac stories. And I remember talking to him one time
[2:11] Speaker 2: and I said, how are things in Chicago. And he said, well,
[2:14] Speaker 2: the traffic's getting bad again. That means the economy is good.
[2:18] Speaker 2: And I was like, oh, that's interesting. He goes, yeah, yeah,
[2:21] Speaker 2: yeah in Chicago. He goes, I can tell you what
[2:23] Speaker 2: the economy is when the traffic's lousy. People are going
[2:27] Speaker 2: and coming home from work right coming. And so I thought, oh,
[2:31] Speaker 2: so I have always thought about that, and I tend
[2:33] Speaker 2: to use airlines. If the airlines are full, I don't
[2:37] Speaker 2: care what the economic indicators tell me. If people are
[2:40] Speaker 2: flying and there's kids on the plane, that means you're
[2:43] Speaker 2: like literally talking your wife into let's fly the kids
[2:46] Speaker 2: down to see Grandma. That's expensive. That costs a lot
[2:49] Speaker 2: of a lot of money. So I'm making some travel
[2:53] Speaker 2: plans this summer, and so I want to take my
[2:58] Speaker 2: son just doing some schooling in he every year he
[3:02] Speaker 2: goes in the summer or late spring, he goes to
[3:04] Speaker 2: Europe and does a couple of weeks of you know,
[3:07] Speaker 2: classes through his school. So he's in Madrid, and I said, hey,
[3:12] Speaker 2: why don't I Why don't we go a week early
[3:14] Speaker 2: and you and I can hang out and then I'll
[3:16] Speaker 2: leave and you just stay and do your classes for
[3:18] Speaker 2: a couple of weeks, so you have a long Spanish
[3:20] Speaker 2: you know, summer. Just Dad will just hop on early
[3:23] Speaker 2: and we'll hang out together. And so I'm booking because
[3:26] Speaker 2: he's gonna go with me. He's going to fly to
[3:27] Speaker 2: Chicago and go with me. And here's my test of
[3:30] Speaker 2: the economy. So I said, let's go. Yeah, let's do
[3:35] Speaker 2: business class one way just to Madrid, because I'm going
[3:38] Speaker 2: to get my own way home. He's going to come
[3:40] Speaker 2: home with his class late night, sleeping most of it.
[3:45] Speaker 2: Business class one way, two people, seventeen thousand, and I went,
[3:52] Speaker 2: I went, okay, the economy's good. So I said, Jack,
[3:57] Speaker 2: I'm gonna buy some gummies. We're gonna sit an economy
[4:01] Speaker 2: and either get stoned or something, but we're going to sleep,
[4:06] Speaker 2: and we're gonna sit in the back of the plane
[4:08] Speaker 2: because Dad's not going to spend it. Seventeen thousand dollars.
[4:12] Speaker 2: Economy is like twenty three hundred. Business is seventeen grand.
[4:17] Speaker 2: And I said, I like sleep. I don't like it
[4:20] Speaker 2: fifteen thousand dollars worth for seven and a half hours
[4:24] Speaker 2: to Madrid. So as I'm doing this, I'm thinking to myself.
[4:28] Speaker 2: And there were only two seats left in business class.
[4:31] Speaker 2: Who are these people? It's a huge plane. They're sixty
[4:34] Speaker 2: business seats, they're all full. The first class are double that.
[4:39] Speaker 2: They're all full. And I'm like, this is just one
[4:43] Speaker 2: flight out of Chicago to Madrid and at night. And
[4:48] Speaker 2: so my takeaway is, how do you judge the economy?
[4:52] Speaker 2: I just I said to my son, I said, and
[4:54] Speaker 2: we would laugh about it. I'm like, you can't tell
[4:57] Speaker 2: me the economy is not rolling for somebody because the
[5:00] Speaker 2: whole damn plane. What so if that flight's full, how
[5:03] Speaker 2: many of New York, Philly, Boston or full first?
[5:08] Speaker 1: So, first of all, can we do gummies together? I
[5:13] Speaker 1: didn't know that was I didn't I didn't know that
[5:16] Speaker 1: was on the table. And how so that opens up
[5:21] Speaker 1: a whole new world of possibilities for Danny and Uncle Colin. Uh.
[5:26] Speaker 1: Second of all, uh, it would it'll be hilarious for
[5:31] Speaker 1: anyone to see Colin Cowhard in thirty one c all
[5:36] Speaker 1: zonked out on a milligrams like so that they're gonna
[5:39] Speaker 1: be like, is that Colin Coward he's riding in coach? Yeah,
[5:42] Speaker 1: you know, he saw it was the sign of the economy.
[5:45] Speaker 1: So that's phenomenal, and Madrid's great, and Spain's great. You
[5:48] Speaker 1: guys will have an amazing time. How do I judge
[5:51] Speaker 1: in the economy, Well, I will say, like, I don't
[5:58] Speaker 1: think it's the stock market. That's not a good that's
[6:01] Speaker 1: not a good indicator, because you know, there's the Fortune
[6:03] Speaker 1: five hundred companies, but then there's like the Big seven,
[6:06] Speaker 1: and like are the Big seven carrying everything else in
[6:09] Speaker 1: the AI boom? And like all these docks just go up, up,
[6:13] Speaker 1: up up up, So it's not to me, it's not
[6:15] Speaker 1: the stock market. Groceries feeling expensive is something for me
[6:23] Speaker 1: that like if I'm noticing that our grocery bill feels expensive,
[6:29] Speaker 1: and we definitely you know, it's not all organic, but
[6:33] Speaker 1: we shop at a nicer grocery store, try to eat healthy.
[6:36] Speaker 1: We have what fruit do you want today? For the kids,
[6:40] Speaker 1: they have multiple options in the house, you know what
[6:42] Speaker 1: I mean. So if I feel like groceries are not
[6:48] Speaker 1: something like, I'm very fortunate, not something that I have
[6:50] Speaker 1: to budget for. But if I am noticing that, it's
[6:54] Speaker 1: like that sure that we spend how much on groceries
[6:59] Speaker 1: this week? If it does, if even if I'm noticing it,
[7:04] Speaker 1: I'm thinking that someone who is significantly less privileged than
[7:07] Speaker 1: me must be hurting from it, and so like, yeah,
[7:10] Speaker 1: so like when people say the economy's ripping, I'm not
[7:14] Speaker 1: positive that, Like because if you're going to fly to Europe,
[7:18] Speaker 1: it's flying overnight. It's not a bad way to do
[7:20] Speaker 1: it because you can sleep on the plane, not have
[7:21] Speaker 1: jet lag, and go and between two major hubs and
[7:25] Speaker 1: business class it's like company travel. It's business travel like, so,
[7:29] Speaker 1: you know, I do get the sense that like inflation
[7:33] Speaker 1: is hurting people who make normal money. Like if you're
[7:36] Speaker 1: if you're if you're right, if you're the breadwinner of
[7:39] Speaker 1: your home and you're making sixty thousand dollars, life is
[7:44] Speaker 1: hard right now and expensive. I think that there is
[7:47] Speaker 1: just a spread between you know, the wealth gap is grew,
[7:53] Speaker 1: the number of billionaires is growing, and so like wealth
[7:56] Speaker 1: inequality is growing. And so in terms of like a
[8:00] Speaker 1: single indicator, I don't think that they're the I think
[8:03] Speaker 1: you have to go a little smaller than business class
[8:06] Speaker 1: to Europe because I just think that like there's a
[8:09] Speaker 1: lot of people. I know someone who just got she
[8:13] Speaker 1: makes pretty good money, not not six feet but like
[8:17] Speaker 1: she's in her mid twenties, lives in New York and
[8:22] Speaker 1: makes nearly six figures. We'll say, So, you know a
[8:26] Speaker 1: salary that a lot of people would be happy to
[8:27] Speaker 1: make it twenty six years old, but when you're in
[8:29] Speaker 1: the most expensive city in the world, it's a lot.
[8:32] Speaker 1: She she just won what they call the housing lottery
[8:36] Speaker 1: out here where she gets to they have they have
[8:39] Speaker 1: every building that comes up, and I don't know all
[8:41] Speaker 1: the details of it, but every building that comes up
[8:43] Speaker 1: every place where you they have to have a certain
[8:45] Speaker 1: number of like rent controlled apartments, And she gets to
[8:49] Speaker 1: move into a one bedroom for twenty three hundred bucks,
[8:53] Speaker 1: but like in an amenities building, in a building that
[8:55] Speaker 1: has a pool and a gym and an elevator and so.
[8:59] Speaker 1: And she used to talking about it about it like
[9:02] Speaker 1: it's like winning the actual lottery because of the relief
[9:06] Speaker 1: of she will be spending less money on a nicer
[9:09] Speaker 1: place than she spends on her current studio apartment to
[9:14] Speaker 1: grind it out making whatever ninety grand a year in
[9:17] Speaker 1: New York. So I think that the economy like doing well.
[9:22] Speaker 1: I think you just have to I think you have
[9:24] Speaker 1: to scale it down a little bit more in terms
[9:26] Speaker 1: of like the thing that you look at on whether
[9:28] Speaker 1: or not people are spending the money on things like that.
[9:32] Speaker 2: I have my steps on and his fiance are moving
[9:35] Speaker 2: to Brooklyn. They're at our house tonight and then they
[9:37] Speaker 2: tomorrow they drive the rest of the way. They've moved
[9:41] Speaker 2: from la to Brooklyn and they're paying forty six hundred
[9:46] Speaker 2: for a two bedroom in Brooklyn. It's a beautiful, cool
[9:50] Speaker 2: building with a beautiful gym, like a real gym, and
[9:55] Speaker 2: a rooftop like bar for young pa. It's very young,
[9:58] Speaker 2: hipster place. And I actually told him, I said, for
[10:02] Speaker 2: the quality here, you're not going to get anything in
[10:05] Speaker 2: California that nice. And like they can. It's Brooklyn, so
[10:08] Speaker 2: they next to a park, they can walk everywhere. And
[10:10] Speaker 2: I'm like, god, I said, I Economically, I'm maybe in
[10:14] Speaker 2: a bubble, but god, that feels reasonable to me.
[10:16] Speaker 1: Yeah. Well, I mean, yeah, Brooklyn is super popular and
[10:19] Speaker 1: it's the thing that I need to like explore more
[10:21] Speaker 1: in New York. It's just I'm in the northern I'm
[10:23] Speaker 1: in the burbs north of New York, so I never
[10:25] Speaker 1: get down there. But like all the people like the
[10:27] Speaker 1: foodies here and the restaurant Seene. Everyone says, like all
[10:30] Speaker 1: the best spots are are opening up in Brooklyn, and yeah,
[10:34] Speaker 1: it's it's obviously all relative. Sometimes, word, you're detached from
[10:38] Speaker 1: my level of earning. I'm detached from some other levels
[10:41] Speaker 1: of learning.
[10:41] Speaker 2: Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, I know I'm living in a bubble.
[10:44] Speaker 2: I so I live through my kids. I ask my
[10:46] Speaker 2: kids all the time, what I look at them? What's rent?
[10:49] Speaker 2: You know? I asked my studies in college, how's the
[10:51] Speaker 2: money situation. He's like, I'm getting by. He likes to cook.
[10:54] Speaker 2: That helps so he you know, that helps him out.
[10:56] Speaker 2: And but it's I just when I heard that business class,
[11:00] Speaker 2: I was just like and they're like, there's and there's
[11:03] Speaker 2: like four flights a day, and I'm like, well, I'm
[11:06] Speaker 2: going on the least desirable one and that's the price.
[11:09] Speaker 1: I was just floor, yeah, yeah, no, I mean Nixon
[11:13] Speaker 1: Japan right now. And I was like, so you flying
[11:16] Speaker 1: first class. It's a long flight. He's like, not for
[11:19] Speaker 1: thirty k I'm like, thirty thousand dollars to Japan.
[11:24] Speaker 2: It's like, it's kind you could.
[11:28] Speaker 1: Buy my car.
[11:30] Speaker 2: What are you?
[11:31] Speaker 1: What are you?
[11:32] Speaker 2: What are you talking about? So I defended BAM out
[11:40] Speaker 2: of buyo. And here here's what My two things is,
[11:45] Speaker 2: first of all, if Jah Morant scored eighty three, far
[11:50] Speaker 2: less of a player than Bam out of buy you
[11:52] Speaker 2: not even the same stratus fare. Bam is just bigger,
[11:55] Speaker 2: more mature, more reliable, two time Olympian, five time All Defense.
[12:02] Speaker 2: But if John Morant scored eighty three, people would celebrate
[12:05] Speaker 2: it because he's cool. Aesthetically, he's appealing. It would look cool.
[12:11] Speaker 2: There'd be at least like four unbelievable spinning plays. Bam
[12:15] Speaker 2: scores eighty three, and it's like, what my neighbor in
[12:19] Speaker 2: waste management has a nicer house than I do this.
[12:22] Speaker 2: I don't like this at all. It'd be one thing
[12:24] Speaker 2: if it was Ben Affleck. It's like, you know, I
[12:28] Speaker 2: tend to think in the NBA style matters, and I
[12:31] Speaker 2: think it's off putting for Bam to shoot forty three
[12:35] Speaker 2: free throws when he averages five. And I mean Kobe
[12:39] Speaker 2: Bryant stayed in a game against an awful Raptors team
[12:45] Speaker 2: and scored in the last four and a half minutes
[12:47] Speaker 2: eleven points in a route. He was in the seventies,
[12:51] Speaker 2: he was high sixties, seventies, and he just kept going
[12:55] Speaker 2: and people celebrated it. There was no pushback. I mean
[12:58] Speaker 2: in the fourth quarter, he's one of only the one
[13:00] Speaker 2: of the only Lakers that took a shot. He was like,
[13:02] Speaker 2: he shot like fourteen to the seventeen shot, and nobody
[13:05] Speaker 2: batter an I. But Bam does it, and I think
[13:10] Speaker 2: I just don't think stylistically, we feel like he's the
[13:12] Speaker 2: guy that should do it. So that's why I defended it.
[13:15] Speaker 1: Could not disagree more. I don't personally think it has
[13:20] Speaker 1: much to do with Bam or his style. I definitely
[13:23] Speaker 1: think it has some to do with Kobe. But you
[13:25] Speaker 1: brought up Kobe. Let's just go back to the eighty one.
[13:28] Speaker 1: It became a blowout, but I just pulled it up,
[13:32] Speaker 1: so I have it exactly correct. They were down seven
[13:36] Speaker 1: after the first, they were down fourteen at half, and
[13:41] Speaker 1: they were up six going into the fourth quarter. That game,
[13:45] Speaker 1: that game was a real game. Now, was Kobe going
[13:48] Speaker 1: for the record? Yes? Did Kobe take all of the
[13:53] Speaker 1: shots late, no doubt about it. But Kobe did that
[13:57] Speaker 1: all the time, like kobebe could be a bit of
[14:00] Speaker 1: a ballhog. I mean that was literally, at one point
[14:04] Speaker 1: in the fourth quarter a six point game. I think
[14:08] Speaker 1: that Bam is a great story. A very very very
[14:13] Speaker 1: good player, All Star Olympian. He worships Kobe Bryant. He
[14:17] Speaker 1: clearly has friends in the league, respecting the league. I mean,
[14:20] Speaker 1: Durant came out and supported him immediately. Jannis Lebron, He's
[14:24] Speaker 1: a well liked pros pro who's one of the best
[14:26] Speaker 1: defensive players of his era. I thought it was cool
[14:29] Speaker 1: that Asia Wilson was there. I have a group chat
[14:32] Speaker 1: of people who really care about the NBA, and BAM
[14:36] Speaker 1: having forty three at halftime hit the group chat. My
[14:39] Speaker 1: wife was out to dinner. I was watching Wemby against
[14:43] Speaker 1: the Celtics. So when BAM has forty three at halftime,
[14:46] Speaker 1: I'm like, oh, that's interesting. I'll throw it on the
[14:49] Speaker 1: second TV on the league pass. Then BAM has over
[14:53] Speaker 1: sixty through three, and I'm like, Okay, something's clearly happening here.
[15:00] Speaker 1: Main TV it with volume. Jalen Brown had been ejected
[15:03] Speaker 1: by this point from the Celtics. Let's flip the screen situation.
[15:06] Speaker 1: I'm gonna lock in on this. So I did not
[15:09] Speaker 1: watch like highlights of it or box score it. I
[15:12] Speaker 1: watched the second half of that basketball game. Sometimes the
[15:18] Speaker 1: story is the record, and I know it's not the
[15:20] Speaker 1: Wilts is the record, but it's the modern scoring record.
[15:24] Speaker 1: Sometimes the story is the record. Other times the story
[15:27] Speaker 1: is how you got the record, how Michael Strahan got
[15:32] Speaker 1: the single season sack record. It became more about how
[15:36] Speaker 1: we got it than the record. Doesn't mean he wasn't
[15:38] Speaker 1: a great player, doesn't mean it wasn't a great season.
[15:42] Speaker 1: But getting the last one against Farv. When Farv laid down,
[15:45] Speaker 1: We're like, Eh, that doesn't sit right, doesn't look right.
[15:48] Speaker 1: Don't love it. When David Robinson won the scoring title
[15:52] Speaker 1: over Shack, the Clippers sat all the starters after five minutes.
[15:56] Speaker 1: He was clearly gunning for it. He got seventy one.
[15:59] Speaker 1: Don't talk about it as an all time great scoring accomplishment.
[16:02] Speaker 1: We talk about it as kind of game the system
[16:05] Speaker 1: a little bit, but okay, he's the scoring champion. The
[16:09] Speaker 1: last six or seven minutes of that basketball game last night,
[16:12] Speaker 1: it was just not basketball. They are intentionally fouling to
[16:16] Speaker 1: maximize possessions. Up twenty five in the fourth quarter against
[16:20] Speaker 1: the Wizards. Yeah s, Spolster is challenging offensive fouls on
[16:26] Speaker 1: Bam on a charge with four minutes left in a
[16:29] Speaker 1: twenty point game to try to get him extra free throws.
[16:32] Speaker 1: His teammates are intentionally missing free throws to try to
[16:36] Speaker 1: get him extra possessions. Like I have. It was a
[16:39] Speaker 1: great game. I have no problem with them going for
[16:42] Speaker 1: the record. I have no problem, but when you are
[16:46] Speaker 1: manipulating possessions in order to do it, and Kobe's Yes,
[16:53] Speaker 1: he shot all the shots, but it was at least
[16:55] Speaker 1: a competitive game. Minutes into the fourth quarter, it became
[17:01] Speaker 1: a blowout because of his dominance.
[17:04] Speaker 2: I just.
[17:07] Speaker 1: I didn't like how he got the record. It doesn't
[17:10] Speaker 1: mean it wasn't an all time great performance. When Klay
[17:12] Speaker 1: Thompson scored sixty two on twenty nine minutes, he sat
[17:16] Speaker 1: the fourth. When Kobe had sixty five, I think against
[17:19] Speaker 1: the Mavericks and they were blowing him out, he sat
[17:22] Speaker 1: the fourth. There's just like there was something about it
[17:25] Speaker 1: that just didn't sit right if you were watching it,
[17:29] Speaker 1: because he didn't get it by playing real basketball.
[17:33] Speaker 2: If he'd ha scored he had sixty two at the
[17:35] Speaker 2: end of three, if he just ended with seventy one
[17:39] Speaker 2: and they didn't do that, you're saying if he has
[17:42] Speaker 2: scored sixty eight and didn't do that, it sits much better.
[17:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, of course. I mean we've Booker, Lillard, Luca, they
[17:49] Speaker 1: all have seventy point games. Like it's scoring is going up.
[17:53] Speaker 1: Teams are tanking, teams are bad like all of those.
[17:57] Speaker 1: When David Robinson did it, it hadn't happened since David Thompson,
[18:01] Speaker 1: and there were three guys ever to do it. Then
[18:03] Speaker 1: after David Robinson did it, there was a long gap
[18:05] Speaker 1: until Kobe did it. Then there's it's happening more regularly.
[18:09] Speaker 1: Like I was going back and forth on sound Tariico
[18:12] Speaker 1: and Reggie during the Celtics game are talking about what
[18:17] Speaker 1: Bam did and Reggie's like openly opening that someone's gonna
[18:20] Speaker 1: get a hundred, and he's I mean, he's he's right
[18:23] Speaker 1: if what happened last night is immediately celebrated when it's
[18:28] Speaker 1: not basketball, like someone's gonna get hot, a team is
[18:32] Speaker 1: going to decide to game it and go for it,
[18:35] Speaker 1: and that guy will be hot from three. Bam took
[18:37] Speaker 1: a bunch of threes. He only hit like seven of
[18:39] Speaker 1: them he shot. He shot less than fifty percent from
[18:42] Speaker 1: the floor. So like, and I know people have been
[18:46] Speaker 1: in my mentions and comments all day, like all you do,
[18:49] Speaker 1: all you guys, do is you just want to complain
[18:51] Speaker 1: about basketball? Like I promise. I love basketball. I was
[18:54] Speaker 1: watching two games by myself on a weeknight in the
[18:59] Speaker 1: regular season. I love the sport. I just don't like
[19:02] Speaker 1: how he got it. And here's a take or a
[19:06] Speaker 1: theory that I haven't said publicly. I wanted to save
[19:08] Speaker 1: it for you. I think because he Kobe was his
[19:12] Speaker 1: favorite player. I think if he would have tied him
[19:16] Speaker 1: at eighty one, no complaints. I think if he would
[19:22] Speaker 1: have I think if he would have done it as
[19:24] Speaker 1: a tribute to Kobe, it would have been like, oh
[19:28] Speaker 1: my god, how cool, and like, yeah the Wizards, and
[19:33] Speaker 1: yeah they were gunning for it. But there is something
[19:36] Speaker 1: about Kobe's eighty one in the flow of a game
[19:41] Speaker 1: and BAM's eighty three when he is being triple teamed
[19:45] Speaker 1: and his teammates are passing up layups and they're intentionally
[19:48] Speaker 1: following guys and challenging calls and missing free throws. It
[19:53] Speaker 1: wasn't basketball. I have no other way to describe it
[19:55] Speaker 1: other than it wasn't basketball. And so I just I
[19:59] Speaker 1: don't I wanted to take away from Bam because it
[20:02] Speaker 1: was cool, But I can't sit here and celebrate it
[20:05] Speaker 1: in the same way as Kobe Bryant's I can't I
[20:08] Speaker 1: can't do it. Reasonable vinds can disagree.

[21:22] Speaker 2: called one eight hundred gambler Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia.
[21:33] Speaker 2: Here's another take I had. I said, through Lebron's career,
[21:43] Speaker 2: you know, it's almost like I used the example of
[21:47] Speaker 2: David Schwimmer on Friends. He could be a mobster in
[21:51] Speaker 2: his next ten roles. To me, he's ross on Friends.
[21:55] Speaker 2: He's been typing, yeah, kind of the white whiny kind of.
[22:01] Speaker 2: He was such a strong character on Friends, and he
[22:03] Speaker 2: played it for so long. That's what and who he is.
[22:08] Speaker 2: And so similarly, Lebron has been typecast is that Lebron
[22:12] Speaker 2: makes everything work. He and Dwayne Wade were not a
[22:15] Speaker 2: perfect fit. Neither was really a great catch and shoot guy.
[22:20] Speaker 2: The team had no center or no true point but
[22:23] Speaker 2: they worked because of sheer athleticism. He and Kyrie Irving
[22:27] Speaker 2: shouldn't have worked. Kyrie needs the ball, Kyrie plays no defense,
[22:32] Speaker 2: and yet Lebron made that work. Lebron made Ilguni z
[22:37] Speaker 2: Alguscis work in Cleveland, got him to a finals. He
[22:39] Speaker 2: made him suddenly. We talked about this guy as this
[22:42] Speaker 2: energy guy without much touch. Is just unbelievable. Anthony Davis
[22:47] Speaker 2: had a label as a soft player, didn't fight through injuries,
[22:51] Speaker 2: not in great shape. No, he wins with him too,
[22:54] Speaker 2: and it's perfect. So every Matthew Delavandova Jr. Smith was
[22:58] Speaker 2: a broken player everything for twenty years, Lebron had been
[23:02] Speaker 2: tighte cast. It just works. So then when he plays
[23:06] Speaker 2: with Luca, it's like, of course, this is the easy one,
[23:10] Speaker 2: and it's it's the one that doesn't because neither wants
[23:16] Speaker 2: to be off ball. Lucas so much better at this
[23:19] Speaker 2: point than Lebron is, so Lebron has to play off ball.
[23:22] Speaker 2: He's having a bad jump shooting season, and if you
[23:25] Speaker 2: play with Luca, you have to be good defensively to
[23:29] Speaker 2: cover up his flaws. That's why the one time he
[23:32] Speaker 2: went to the finals with Dallas, Big athletic. They acquire
[23:36] Speaker 2: that trade deadline PJ Washington Rim protectors suddenly are like, oh,
[23:41] Speaker 2: Lucas stinks on defense, It doesn't matter. He just pushes
[23:43] Speaker 2: people to this, then takes off, pushes people, runs him
[23:47] Speaker 2: off the three point line. So there's a way to
[23:50] Speaker 2: build around bad defensive players Steph Kyrie. Well, Lebron never
[23:55] Speaker 2: was that, and so there's this belief that Lebron and
[23:59] Speaker 2: Luca it will eventually work. It's over a year in
[24:04] Speaker 2: the net rating, the defensive rating, it's atrocious when Lebron
[24:09] Speaker 2: and Luca are together. In fact, when Luca and Austin
[24:13] Speaker 2: are together, it's fantastic, and nobody wants to hear this.
[24:17] Speaker 2: Luca and Austin are great Luca without Austin, and no,
[24:23] Speaker 2: Lebron's great Austin. Just take Lebron out of all the
[24:29] Speaker 2: plus minuses. Everything works unless you put Lebron in it
[24:34] Speaker 2: on the Lakers, and nobody quite knows what to make
[24:37] Speaker 2: of it because he's still a very good player. Yeah,
[24:40] Speaker 2: Lebron is still a very good player. It's the Laker's
[24:46] Speaker 2: fault in terms of the roster construction because to your point,
[24:50] Speaker 2: they were together last year and we've watched Lebron and
[24:53] Speaker 2: Luca long enough we should know. But I think there's
[24:58] Speaker 2: a time when Lebron and Luca could have worked, but
[25:02] Speaker 2: not when Lebron's forty one, because I mean, Lebron was
[25:06] Speaker 2: first Team All Defense I think two thousand and nine
[25:11] Speaker 2: to twenty thirteen. Like, he's not he doesn't have as
[25:13] Speaker 2: many he doesn't have as many as sortative yeah six
[25:17] Speaker 2: times all in his twenties. But there are no great
[25:19] Speaker 2: defensive players in the NBA in their mid thirties on.
[25:23] Speaker 2: They're just not.
[25:24] Speaker 1: And so that's the thing, Like there was a point
[25:26] Speaker 1: in time when Lebron and Luca obviously could have worked,
[25:30] Speaker 1: but it is not when Lebron is in his forties,
[25:33] Speaker 1: and everybody should know that. So, you know, they haven't
[25:39] Speaker 1: played a ton of minutes together this year, relatively speaking,
[25:43] Speaker 1: But we want to make them a story because they're
[25:48] Speaker 1: good for ratings. It's the Lakers, it's celebrity, Lebron matters
[25:52] Speaker 1: a lot to the league, and like.
[25:55] Speaker 2: It's a good offensive team.
[25:56] Speaker 1: They're fine, Yeah, exactly right, and you and you like
[26:00] Speaker 1: and they walk onto the court feel bad. Yeah, it
[26:04] Speaker 1: feels big, and it's like and I'll admit, like I'm like, damn,
[26:08] Speaker 1: that's an impressive five. Like you know, like when you
[26:11] Speaker 1: like when they when they walk onto the cart, You're like,
[26:13] Speaker 1: why any given night it feels like they could score
[26:15] Speaker 1: one and twenty five points and just and just outscore you.
[26:20] Speaker 1: But the West is too good and like the thunder
[26:22] Speaker 1: are too good defensively, and the Rockets are too good defensively,
[26:26] Speaker 1: and the Spurs are way too good defensively, and the
[26:28] Speaker 1: Wolves are too athletic. Like they're drawing dead. They're they're
[26:32] Speaker 1: they are, they are they'll make the playoffs and they
[26:35] Speaker 1: are drawing dead. But they have so much star power
[26:38] Speaker 1: and brand power that people like us almost feel compelled
[26:42] Speaker 1: frankly to talk about them because it's good for business.
[26:46] Speaker 1: But like, I can't tell you how many times I've
[26:48] Speaker 1: seen like Lakers contender or pretender. I've been on shows
[26:51] Speaker 1: or the questions like Lakers. They are not a contender.
[26:55] Speaker 1: They're not a contender. No, It's it's very obvious. And
[26:59] Speaker 1: like it's like they're worse with Lebron. Is that Lebron's fault?
[27:04] Speaker 1: If he is still very good and he's forty one
[27:07] Speaker 1: and he's like, well, you guys want me to be
[27:09] Speaker 1: Scottie Pippen, like I'm not that anymore. Like so, I
[27:12] Speaker 1: just I guess it's a criticism of Lebron, But at
[27:16] Speaker 1: forty one years old, I don't expect him to be
[27:19] Speaker 1: a lockdown defensive player, given that that's never happened in the
[27:22] Speaker 1: history of the Sport.
[27:25] Speaker 2: Bears. Nine and a half is that the easiest bet
[27:29] Speaker 2: of the offseason. Bears have added Kobe Bryant, Devin Bush,
[27:36] Speaker 2: Bradley the center, Caleb's gonna get better second year. They
[27:40] Speaker 2: by the way, they play the NFC South and the
[27:44] Speaker 2: AFC East, so you know they're beating the Dolphins in
[27:48] Speaker 2: the Jets. Bears at least.
[27:53] Speaker 1: I love it. The The regression case is simple. They
[27:57] Speaker 1: had seven comeback wins, they led the league in takeaways,
[28:02] Speaker 1: and left guard, center, right guard, right tackle all played
[28:07] Speaker 1: over ninety percent of your snaps. So you're gonna have
[28:10] Speaker 1: some offensive line injuries, and obviously the Dolmin injury, you
[28:13] Speaker 1: already you've already lost your center out out of that equation.
[28:16] Speaker 1: So there's gonna be it's gonna be a different offensive line,
[28:19] Speaker 1: even if they're bringing the other you know, three pieces back.
[28:21] Speaker 1: You know, that's that's the three prongs. Case for regression
[28:26] Speaker 1: is what I just said. Offensive line won't be as
[28:28] Speaker 1: healthy as it was, you won't lead the league in takeaways,
[28:30] Speaker 1: and you're not gonna have seven fourth quarter comebacks. But
[28:35] Speaker 1: Caleb is gonna be better. He's just he is going
[28:38] Speaker 1: to be better. And the well Colston loved on Luther
[28:41] Speaker 1: Burden at the end of the year were accelerating. They
[28:44] Speaker 1: became like like like Colston Lovelin became is he like
[28:47] Speaker 1: the second best tight end? Correct? And I think so. Yeah.
[28:49] Speaker 1: I think the Bears have an incredibly high offensive ceiling
[28:54] Speaker 1: this year. Like, I think they're going into the year
[28:56] Speaker 1: thinking that they can be the best offense in football. Now,
[28:59] Speaker 1: probably a third of the league believes that. Dallas believes it,
[29:03] Speaker 1: the Rams believe it, the Jaguars believe it, the you know,
[29:07] Speaker 1: the Niners believe it. So I'm not saying I'm not
[29:09] Speaker 1: saying I'm picking them to be the number one offense
[29:11] Speaker 1: in football, but like, they absolutely are going to go
[29:13] Speaker 1: into the year thinking that they can be. The schedule
[29:16] Speaker 1: point that you made is a good one, and that's
[29:18] Speaker 1: the like Caleb's improvement in year two under Ben Johnson,
[29:22] Speaker 1: year three in the league, like it's the year for
[29:24] Speaker 1: the leap, and he got better every month during the
[29:28] Speaker 1: season last year as he was learning the system. So
[29:31] Speaker 1: I cannot even imagine how big of a leap he
[29:33] Speaker 1: can take from year two to year three. So yeah,
[29:36] Speaker 1: you're not gonna hear me coming on here and being like,
[29:38] Speaker 1: I think the Bears are an eight win team, no shot.
[29:41] Speaker 2: Okay, So I just watched one Battle after another twice
[29:46] Speaker 2: I watched, watched it, and then I flew back from
[29:49] Speaker 2: Florida and I watched it again. I think it's an
[29:50] Speaker 2: exceptional movie. I've always seen it once, but yeah, I
[29:53] Speaker 2: thought in theaters it was great. I just watched Marty
[29:55] Speaker 2: Supreme the other night, but go ahead, how's that?
[30:00] Speaker 1: Uh Shlomo was incredible? Incredible? But sorry, go ahead.
[30:07] Speaker 2: So I watched that movie and after it was done,
[30:12] Speaker 2: I said to my wife, I said, I think Christian
[30:17] Speaker 2: Bale is the best European actor. Russell Crowe is the
[30:23] Speaker 2: best actor in Australia. And I said, I think Sean
[30:28] Speaker 2: Penn is our greatest domestic actor. I think he is
[30:32] Speaker 2: our greatest I think he is the greatest actor in
[30:35] Speaker 2: our country. And I watched that movie. First of all,
[30:41] Speaker 2: part of being a great actor is I cannot take
[30:44] Speaker 2: my eyes off you when you enter a scene. It
[30:46] Speaker 2: doesn't matter who else is in the scene. If you're
[30:49] Speaker 2: in the scene, my eyes go right to you. The
[30:52] Speaker 2: second thing I judge is if you don't talk a
[30:55] Speaker 2: lot and you still have power. Anthony Hopkins in Silence,
[30:59] Speaker 2: wuld He's only on screen eleven minutes. He has very
[31:04] Speaker 2: little dialogue. Literally dominates, dominates the movie. It's one of
[31:08] Speaker 2: the greatest performances in the history of acting. Eleven minutes dominates.
[31:14] Speaker 2: And also that movie was released very early in the year,
[31:17] Speaker 2: so which is like not a recipe to win Oscars,
[31:21] Speaker 2: Like you usually wanted to be released right before the Oscars.
[31:24] Speaker 2: That was came out long before. But I'm watching that
[31:27] Speaker 2: movie and Leonardo DiCaprio is obviously brilliant, and yet Sean
[31:34] Speaker 2: Penn when you juxtaposed him, when you put him on
[31:37] Speaker 2: the screen together, I'm like, No, Sean Penn dwarfs Leonardo
[31:41] Speaker 2: DiCaprio and I I just came out of that movie
[31:45] Speaker 2: and I'm like, I'm not sure. There's a lot of
[31:47] Speaker 2: great actors and I'm not It's not a short list,
[31:50] Speaker 2: it's a lot.
[31:51] Speaker 1: Right, There's an there's a Denzel argument, there's a Tom
[31:54] Speaker 1: Hanks argument, there's a Leo.
[31:55] Speaker 2: Argument, there's a yeah, there's there's this brilliant people. Yeah,
[32:00] Speaker 2: everywhere you know in my lifetime, Meryl Streep, Dustin Hoffman, like,
[32:06] Speaker 2: there are people that I mean, Meryl Streep just doesn't
[32:09] Speaker 2: make I. I can't get over the performance God in
[32:16] Speaker 2: the in fact before I won't you know, I won't
[32:19] Speaker 2: give too much away, but before the demise of Colonel
[32:22] Speaker 2: Lockjaw Sean Penn, even the last two scenes, You're like,
[32:27] Speaker 2: I don't know how they did it. It's the greatest
[32:29] Speaker 2: makeup artist in the history of the industry. I I
[32:35] Speaker 2: and and by the way, I want my artists. I
[32:39] Speaker 2: don't want them to look like John Hamm. I don't.
[32:42] Speaker 2: I don't want my artists to look like Denzel. I
[32:45] Speaker 2: want them to look like artists and be off and
[32:47] Speaker 2: different and unique. And that's why I think it's so
[32:51] Speaker 2: effective when you get like, you know, it's it's Robin
[32:55] Speaker 2: Williams could play he just he was just Different's brain
[33:00] Speaker 2: was functioning in a MILLI you could do Missus, doubtfire,
[33:03] Speaker 2: he could do Goodwill hunting. He was just he was
[33:05] Speaker 2: a different human being from stand up to his humanity,
[33:10] Speaker 2: to his I mean just this cavernous ability to do
[33:16] Speaker 2: reservoir of different characters and voices. I think Sean Penn's
[33:21] Speaker 2: the best actor in this country. Well, listen, it's a
[33:23] Speaker 2: great it's a great take. It's obviously super subjective. He's
[33:29] Speaker 2: got a real good shot at winning Best Supporting Actor.
[33:33] Speaker 2: Oh you know, but like Benisio was incredible too in
[33:37] Speaker 2: that movie also as a nominated Best Supporting Actor, he
[33:40] Speaker 2: was funnier, right.
[33:41] Speaker 1: I think Sean Penn's character stole so many scenes in
[33:45] Speaker 1: that movie. Because I think it's the best movie I've seen.
[33:52] Speaker 1: I think it was my favorite movie I've seen. When
[33:54] Speaker 1: I watched it a second time, I liked it more.
[33:56] Speaker 1: I think it's my favorite movie I've probably seen in
[33:59] Speaker 1: twelve months. Yeah, I mean, listen, it's it's a really
[34:02] Speaker 1: good year. Uh, Sinners was great, One Battle after another,
[34:07] Speaker 1: Marty Supreme like those. It's it's a it's a fun
[34:09] Speaker 1: Best Actor and a fun Best Picture race this year
[34:14] Speaker 1: in the odds seem to suggest that it's pretty wide
[34:16] Speaker 1: open and the I don't remember which one one it what,
[34:20] Speaker 1: but I know that like Sag after a Golden globes,
[34:23] Speaker 1: the bath that's like it's been kind of split, like
[34:26] Speaker 1: it had like one person hasn't won all of the
[34:28] Speaker 1: awards leading up to it, so there's a lot of
[34:30] Speaker 1: debate and who's gonna you know, take home take home
[34:34] Speaker 1: the hardware at the at the Academy Awards. And what
[34:37] Speaker 1: a spot for Conan. I know you and I have
[34:38] Speaker 1: talked about Conan, but like what a hosting spot for
[34:42] Speaker 1: for Conan next week? With the Rob Reiner tribute and
[34:46] Speaker 1: trying to balance everything that's going on with like the
[34:49] Speaker 1: industry and that and that's just an. I can't wait
[34:53] Speaker 1: to see how he handles it because I know it's
[34:56] Speaker 1: more of my generation than your. I think he's brilliant.
[35:02] Speaker 1: What I would say about DiCaprio's case that I like
[35:06] Speaker 1: for the best for the Best Actor, and I guess
[35:09] Speaker 1: maybe it's more of a chock opinion than Sean penn
[35:12] Speaker 1: Is has never done a franchise and has been crushing
[35:18] Speaker 1: it since he was little, and like he won the
[35:22] Speaker 1: Best Actor for the for the Revenant, and I'm like,
[35:24] Speaker 1: is that even one of his five best performances? Yeah? Yeah,
[35:30] Speaker 1: Like it was just you know, like Gilbert great, incredible,
[35:37] Speaker 1: a scene stealer and a huge ensemble cast in The Departed,
[35:41] Speaker 1: you know, going blow for blow with Jack Nicholson obviously,
[35:47] Speaker 1: you know, uh.
[35:50] Speaker 2: He's a very good he plays a great strained human.
[35:54] Speaker 1: Yeah, but it's it's just they're all you know, they're
[35:57] Speaker 1: all singular characters, and they're like they said, no franchises,
[36:01] Speaker 1: a lot of original ideas, big movies, small movie. Like
[36:05] Speaker 1: he's just he's spectacular. Hank's doing all the biopic work
[36:11] Speaker 1: that he can do is pretty incredible. Like he actually
[36:14] Speaker 1: plays people, you know what I mean. And then he's like, oh, wow,
[36:18] Speaker 1: you're you're now Sully, Like okay, yeah, I believe that,
[36:22] Speaker 1: you know what I mean, I believe it. But I
[36:25] Speaker 1: think Sean Penn why he stole the scenes in that movie.
[36:27] Speaker 1: It was like it was like the most it felt
[36:30] Speaker 1: like he was the most unlike Sean Penn because he
[36:33] Speaker 1: was like such an evil, vile person.
[36:36] Speaker 2: And he was such an inappropriate what I'm saying, he
[36:39] Speaker 2: was so.
[36:41] Speaker 1: Oh Leonardo, Leonardo DiCaprio was kind of a weird stoner,
[36:46] Speaker 1: like I buy it, like you know, like how much
[36:51] Speaker 1: how much work did you do? Like what he would
[36:53] Speaker 1: tell the story, it's a great story of how he
[36:56] Speaker 1: like prepped for the Quailude scene in Wolf of Wall
[37:00] Speaker 1: Street and he's like, I watched a video of a
[37:02] Speaker 1: guy who was really messed up on YouTube. It's like, okay, yeah,
[37:06] Speaker 1: you've also done a lot of drugs, uh so so
[37:09] Speaker 1: you can you can get it together. Like yeah, that
[37:11] Speaker 1: was a pretty incredible performance by Sean Penn. And I listen,
[37:15] Speaker 1: I'm not like a death of Hollywood, like totally fatalistic
[37:18] Speaker 1: person about it, but I see why every actor is
[37:21] Speaker 1: like I.
[37:21] Speaker 2: Want to work with Paul Thomas Anderson.
[37:24] Speaker 1: Because like that is such a Yes, there's a source
[37:27] Speaker 1: material of a book, but like you've been working on
[37:30] Speaker 1: it for decades.
[37:31] Speaker 2: It's a huge.
[37:33] Speaker 1: Epic piece that it's shot in all these different locations.
[37:36] Speaker 1: It's like a totally origin it's a totally original take.
[37:40] Speaker 1: Like I would just imagine all these actors that are
[37:42] Speaker 1: getting like, oh, I could be the fourth person to
[37:45] Speaker 1: be the Hulk or the sixth person to be Batman
[37:48] Speaker 1: or Spider Man. Like it's just like you get a
[37:49] Speaker 1: script like that, it has to just be so refreshing
[37:51] Speaker 1: because like what a singular movie like like that might
[37:55] Speaker 1: be a defining Shawn He's done he didn't misstic river
[37:58] Speaker 1: like he's on all these unbelievable things, and it's like, oh,
[38:01] Speaker 1: that's the defining thing for Sean Penn. It's pretty cool.
[38:05] Speaker 2: I thought it was fascinating. The road scene that lasted
[38:08] Speaker 2: about fifteen minutes. Then you could write that down in
[38:13] Speaker 2: a script and it's not captivating. But when you watched
[38:16] Speaker 2: it and the movie and the music they used under that,
[38:20] Speaker 2: that intense music that went like twelve minutes of watching
[38:23] Speaker 2: cars drive up and down a desert road, could not
[38:27] Speaker 2: take your eyes off it.
[38:28] Speaker 1: The second time, I'm like, god, it was great and like,
[38:32] Speaker 1: you know, it's a longer movie, but it didn't feel
[38:35] Speaker 1: long at all. Like that. That is a great test
[38:38] Speaker 1: of a movie, like did you think it should be shorter?
[38:41] Speaker 1: If you thought it should be shorter, it's not a
[38:44] Speaker 1: great movie. It can be a good movie. It could
[38:46] Speaker 1: be a movie that you would like and recommend to somebody,
[38:48] Speaker 1: but it's not a great movie. Like if you have
[38:51] Speaker 1: a long movie that you're like, it's great and I
[38:54] Speaker 1: wouldn't cut a thing, it's like that's that's a great film.
[38:57] Speaker 1: Because that movie was a it was an epic, it
[39:01] Speaker 1: was it was an it was just like, and there's
[39:03] Speaker 1: not there's not that many anymore that like you were,
[39:05] Speaker 1: you were like, I have to see it in the theater.
[39:07] Speaker 1: I have to see it how the filmmaker intended. You know,
[39:10] Speaker 1: the Tom Cruise movies are like that because of the
[39:12] Speaker 1: special effects. Yeah, I want Christopher Nolan movies are like
[39:17] Speaker 1: that because of the skull. You had to see Oppenheimer
[39:19] Speaker 1: in a theater. I can't wait to see Odyssey, uh
[39:22] Speaker 1: in a theater. But yeah, Paul Thomas Anderson doing a
[39:26] Speaker 1: movie with with that cast, it was I was. I
[39:30] Speaker 1: was happy to fork over the money for the popcorn.
[39:32] Speaker 1: Oh my god, this is a great podcast. I was
[39:35] Speaker 1: all over the mat you were, But it was fun.
