Colin Cowherd gives his instant reaction to the Lions on Monday Night Football. He argues that he hasn’t seen a team dominate the Ravens physically like the Lions (4:00), and explains why he’s so impressed by Dan Campbell’s ability to build a winning culture in Detroit (7:30). He highlights Jared Goff’s incredible 11-1 record in primetime games and a massive performance by the Lions D that sacked Lamar Jackson seven times (9:00), and argues that the top NFC teams have built better overall rosters than the QB-centric AFC (12:30). [1:37] Speaker 1: called one eight hundred. Gambler Arizona, Colorado, Illinois, New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia.
[1:46] Speaker 1: All right, it's official. Lions beat the Ravens thirty eight
[1:50] Speaker 1: to thirty. It did not feel like it was thirty
[1:54] Speaker 1: eight to thirty. It felt like it was forty eight
[1:56] Speaker 1: to twenty. Detroit was seven acts. Really mean, you watch
[2:03] Speaker 1: Baltimore and it made you just think less of Baltimore
[2:07] Speaker 1: as a franchise, Like I don't remember the last time
[2:10] Speaker 1: Baltimore at home got pushed around like that, especially by
[2:16] Speaker 1: an NFC team, just completely pushed around, so demoralizing. I mean,
[2:22] Speaker 1: if you take away three or four incredible Lamar Jackson plays,
[2:26] Speaker 1: He's an insane talent. This game was never really competitive.
[2:31] Speaker 1: I mean, at one point the Lions converted seven of
[2:33] Speaker 1: ten third and fourth downs, you know, I mean Lamar Jackson.
[2:39] Speaker 1: Not only did Detroit come in and take command early,
[2:41] Speaker 1: but then at halftime they got more dominant in the
[2:45] Speaker 1: second half. So that's just personnel. And you have to
[2:48] Speaker 1: be careful about first impressions because our first impression of
[2:53] Speaker 1: Detroit with new coordinators was the Hall of Fame game.
[2:56] Speaker 1: They were awful. Then the preseason you're like, oh, they're bad.
[3:00] Speaker 1: The opener at Green Bay and you're like, oh, Detroit,
[3:03] Speaker 1: this this isn't gonna work. They're gonna miss Ben Johnson.
[3:06] Speaker 1: But what they've done since then is they've really gotten
[3:09] Speaker 1: back to basics. With the game against the Bears and
[3:12] Speaker 1: the game against the Ravens. They're gonna run the football,
[3:14] Speaker 1: they're gonna pound it. And once again, if you looked
[3:17] Speaker 1: at the rosters tonight, I mean, obviously Goff and amor On,
[3:20] Speaker 1: Saint Brown and Hutchison the branch. Those are great, great players,
[3:25] Speaker 1: Jamior Gibbs. But one of the things Detroit has done
[3:28] Speaker 1: exceedingly well. You know, you when Sean McVay came to
[3:31] Speaker 1: the Rams, the coach turned around the franchise. You could
[3:36] Speaker 1: say Shanahan turned around the Niners, but he has a
[3:39] Speaker 1: losing record without McCaffrey. Really, Christian McCaffrey is the guy
[3:43] Speaker 1: that took Kyle Shanahan's ability to magically transform quarterbacks and
[3:47] Speaker 1: made it all work. I mean, McCaffrey really has taken
[3:51] Speaker 1: them that offense to a different level. When you look
[3:56] Speaker 1: at Detroit, it's their front office. I mean these rosters.
[4:00] Speaker 1: I mean last year they're falling apart physically. They had
[4:03] Speaker 1: to go heavy into the interior line in this draft,
[4:07] Speaker 1: and they're starting a rookie on the offensive line. Baltimore
[4:11] Speaker 1: was a little dinged up on the d line. But
[4:13] Speaker 1: you just look at that roster, man, they got good players.
[4:16] Speaker 1: I mean, they just have dudes all over that offense.
[4:20] Speaker 1: I mean, when you can have elite tackles in this sport,
[4:25] Speaker 1: you're one of four or five teams in this league
[4:28] Speaker 1: that have elite tackles at bow spots and that's the Lions,
[4:33] Speaker 1: and they put on a clinic tonight. I take all
[4:36] Speaker 1: these notes, and I was taking them in the first
[4:38] Speaker 1: half like it was going to be a really close finish.
[4:41] Speaker 1: But Detroit came in with an I mean they had
[4:43] Speaker 1: ninety eight and ninety six yard drives. Usually, if you
[4:46] Speaker 1: say you're gonna go on the road, you're gonna face
[4:48] Speaker 1: a really good franchise, a Pro Bowl quarterback, and you're
[4:51] Speaker 1: gonna be pinned deep multiple times in the game. That
[4:55] Speaker 1: is really an omen for a tough Monday night football game.
[4:59] Speaker 1: Detroit had ninety eight and ninety six yards scoring drives.
[5:04] Speaker 1: I mean it was crazy. And when they went forward
[5:08] Speaker 1: on fourth and two and gofits that big pass to
[5:11] Speaker 1: Omor on Saint Brown, of course they went for it.
[5:13] Speaker 1: That was an easy one. That just that's part of
[5:15] Speaker 1: their culture. I will say this for Dan Campbell. I
[5:17] Speaker 1: thought he had a kind of a goofy opening press conference.
[5:21] Speaker 1: But I've told this story several times. I was talking
[5:23] Speaker 1: to a general manager in the league who had hired
[5:25] Speaker 1: a couple of coaches, and he said, you're really hiring
[5:27] Speaker 1: a CEO if you can get a great schematic coach
[5:30] Speaker 1: like an Andy Reid or Kyle Shanahan. That's a bonus
[5:33] Speaker 1: what you want as a leader of men, what you want.
[5:37] Speaker 1: You know, if a guy is too much about schemes
[5:39] Speaker 1: and not about leadership, it's not going to work. That's
[5:41] Speaker 1: Mike McDaniel in Miami. It's great that Andy Reid can
[5:44] Speaker 1: do both, but you're hiring a leader of men and
[5:47] Speaker 1: that can build a culture. That's verbel That's Dan Campbell
[5:52] Speaker 1: and he has been steadfast, like he has never wavered
[5:55] Speaker 1: on this. They're going to go for it. They're going
[5:56] Speaker 1: to be super aggressive, they're going to be super physical.
[5:59] Speaker 1: They put a clinic. I mean that. That is the
[6:01] Speaker 1: most impressive game an NFC team has played in Baltimore
[6:06] Speaker 1: in five years, in almost the Lamar Jackson era. That
[6:11] Speaker 1: was a dominating performance. Yeah, I mean third quarter, Lamar
[6:16] Speaker 1: had that drive where he had three connections. Two of
[6:19] Speaker 1: them the Mark Andrews great throw to Mark Andrews in
[6:21] Speaker 1: the end zone, but then goff to amor On Saint
[6:24] Speaker 1: Brown answers, great throw and boom twenty one twenty one.
[6:28] Speaker 1: So every time Baltimore made something happen, the Ravens came
[6:33] Speaker 1: right back I want to look at a couple of
[6:34] Speaker 1: these numbers. By the way, for the record, the Ravens
[6:37] Speaker 1: are one and two for the second straight year. They're
[6:39] Speaker 1: gonna be fine. But the way they got manhandled tonight.
[6:44] Speaker 1: And you know, it's funny everybody talked about Lamar Jackson
[6:48] Speaker 1: being so good on Monday Night Football because he was.
[6:50] Speaker 1: What is interesting is how good Jared Goff has been
[6:54] Speaker 1: in primetime. He's the opposite of Kirk Cousins. Jared Goff
[6:58] Speaker 1: is eleven and one in primetime. And the first big
[7:00] Speaker 1: primetime game I remember about Jared Goff is he faced
[7:04] Speaker 1: Patrick Mahomes. I think it was going to be in
[7:07] Speaker 1: Mexico City. It got postponed, he got moved. They played
[7:10] Speaker 1: in the Coliseum pre Sofi obviously, and he outdueled Patrick Mahomes.
[7:16] Speaker 1: And that's the first one I really remember. He was good.
[7:18] Speaker 1: But you're like, wow, GoF gets on heaters, and when
[7:23] Speaker 1: he does, it's pretty special. I want to look at.
[7:26] Speaker 1: I want to look at right now. Here's the official stats.
[7:30] Speaker 1: Detroit had four hundred and twenty seven yards six point
[7:34] Speaker 1: six yards of play, twenty five first downs, perfect on
[7:38] Speaker 1: fourth down, dominated time of possession. I mean to go
[7:42] Speaker 1: on the road and have eight penalties, and when is
[7:46] Speaker 1: something else? I mean, now again, it wasn't like the
[7:49] Speaker 1: Ravens weren't good on third down. They were six of eleven,
[7:53] Speaker 1: but they allowed seven sacks and the Lions didn't allow
[7:56] Speaker 1: any What a performance. And think about the team has
[8:00] Speaker 1: been so dominant in the AFC for years, Kansas City.
[8:04] Speaker 1: I mean, right now I'm thinking about my Super Bowl bubble.
[8:08] Speaker 1: Do I put Detroit back in it? I mean again,
[8:11] Speaker 1: Hall of Fame game, preseason opener against Green Bay, they
[8:14] Speaker 1: just knew coordinators. They look awful. Johnny Morton tonight, I
[8:18] Speaker 1: don't know if you'll call a better game. I mean,
[8:20] Speaker 1: it was just and you know sometimes coordinators, offensive coordinators
[8:25] Speaker 1: say they want to run the ball, but they get
[8:27] Speaker 1: too clever, they get too cute. Even Sean McVay sometimes
[8:30] Speaker 1: can get a little bit cute. I mean Johnny Morton tonight,
[8:33] Speaker 1: he just kept going back to the run. I mean,
[8:35] Speaker 1: they didn't and it didn't. It didn't look like the
[8:38] Speaker 1: Ben Johnson Lions. There was no cute. I mean, anytime
[8:43] Speaker 1: there was a question what they were going to do,
[8:45] Speaker 1: I mean they did. They did have that double option
[8:47] Speaker 1: on fourth and one. They had one, which I think
[8:50] Speaker 1: they've run that about once a year the last several years.
[8:53] Speaker 1: It feels like maybe more. I don't watch every snap
[8:55] Speaker 1: for the Lions. That's just a great call. And if
[8:57] Speaker 1: you run it twice a year, you know it's it's
[9:00] Speaker 1: hard to defend, really clever. And every time I remember
[9:03] Speaker 1: Detroit running it, they've run it well. I think I've
[9:05] Speaker 1: seen them run at a couple different times. So but
[9:08] Speaker 1: they didn't outthink the room Detroit. It's like we're on
[9:11] Speaker 1: the road. I mean, how fast did the first half go?
[9:14] Speaker 1: Because of both teams were running. The first half just
[9:17] Speaker 1: flew by. It was really good football. Like I love football.
[9:21] Speaker 1: I like quick football. You can get me beginning to
[9:24] Speaker 1: end in three forty. That's good football. Sometimes these college
[9:27] Speaker 1: games go on forever because the team trails, they have
[9:31] Speaker 1: to throw to get back into it. They're not very
[9:32] Speaker 1: good at quarterback. The clockets stopping. It's awful. God, that
[9:38] Speaker 1: was an incredible performance. If you're a Lions fan, you
[9:42] Speaker 1: know you look at this league on a macro level.
[9:45] Speaker 1: As I was saying about Kansas City, look at how
[9:47] Speaker 1: Kansas City is just struggling to get their offensive line
[9:51] Speaker 1: right to get their running game right. You know what
[9:55] Speaker 1: I think we've seen and tonight is a stamp on it.
[9:58] Speaker 1: For about four years, because the afcgms did such a
[10:03] Speaker 1: good job to hit on quarterbacks Herbert Burrow, Lamar, Josh Allen.
[10:09] Speaker 1: They just kept hitting one after another after night. Even
[10:11] Speaker 1: the ones that haven't lived up to the billing, Trevor Lawrence,
[10:14] Speaker 1: you know, are still you know, better than average. And
[10:19] Speaker 1: so I felt like, Okay, the AFC hit on these quarterbacks,
[10:23] Speaker 1: then they had to pay all of them, and the
[10:25] Speaker 1: rosters aren't as good. You're watching the Lions roster tonight,
[10:28] Speaker 1: the Packers, despite losing to Cleveland, great roster. Philadelphia's roster
[10:32] Speaker 1: is the best in football, Seattle's roster, they've had back
[10:35] Speaker 1: to back to back good drafts, the Rams defensive roster.
[10:39] Speaker 1: So what happened is the AFC for about five years
[10:41] Speaker 1: with all these great quarterbacks. You're like, wow, there was
[10:44] Speaker 1: a gap AFC NFC. Then you have to pay all
[10:46] Speaker 1: the quarterbacks in the AFC. Okay, now the rosters aren't
[10:49] Speaker 1: as good. I mean, Buffalo's back into their defense, eh,
[10:53] Speaker 1: I mean Ravens defense tonight, especially in the box. I mean,
[10:56] Speaker 1: come on, they got pushed around. I mean, Kansas City's
[10:59] Speaker 1: defense is playing well, but their offense, the offensive line,
[11:01] Speaker 1: the run game, So now it feels like to me
[11:04] Speaker 1: it has swung back. I mean, I'm thinking, top of my
[11:07] Speaker 1: head of the teams in the top ten, Tampa's the
[11:09] Speaker 1: top ten team, Seattle is San Francisco is, Philadelphia is
[11:12] Speaker 1: Green Bay is. I think Detroit has to be. I mean,
[11:16] Speaker 1: Kansas City's not. I don't know what you do with
[11:17] Speaker 1: Baltimore after tonight. They're gonna be fine. They started one
[11:20] Speaker 1: and two last year. They're gonna be fine. But Denver
[11:23] Speaker 1: hasn't been as good as we thought. Baltimore's off to
[11:25] Speaker 1: one one and two start. Kansas City offensively is sputtering.
[11:30] Speaker 1: Feels like the NFC not saying that because I work
[11:33] Speaker 1: at Fox. It feels like the NFC has had this run.
[11:37] Speaker 1: And in the NFC you have really good quarterbacks on
[11:40] Speaker 1: reasonable deals. Sam Darnold brought pretty, Baker Mayfield, Jalen Hurts
[11:47] Speaker 1: is on a pretty team friendly deal. Dak isn't. But
[11:50] Speaker 1: a lot of the NFC quarterbacks who aren't considered superstars
[11:54] Speaker 1: their stars are on better team friendly deals like Darnald
[12:00] Speaker 1: and like Baker Well that allows you to have better rosters,
[12:03] Speaker 1: and my staff does such a great job. The NFC
[12:07] Speaker 1: is nine and two this season against the AFC, and
[12:11] Speaker 1: boy tonight was an exclamation point. That was not just
[12:14] Speaker 1: a win. That was physical domination. I mean they that
[12:20] Speaker 1: was bully ball. That was pushing the Ravens around man
[12:26] Speaker 1: Aiden Hutchison. They kind of limited Lamar as a runner
[12:30] Speaker 1: for the most part. And I like Derrick Henry for
[12:34] Speaker 1: the record, but since twenty nineteen, and this was an
[12:39] Speaker 1: Adrian Peterson issue. Since twenty nineteen, Derrick Henry tied for
[12:43] Speaker 1: the most fumbles in the league among the running backs.
[12:46] Speaker 1: And I know that it was a bad fumble deep
[12:50] Speaker 1: in their own territory. You know, feel like, oh, that
[12:53] Speaker 1: really hurt the team. That's not what the game was about.
[12:56] Speaker 1: That's not what the game was about. You gotta be
[12:57] Speaker 1: honest if you're a Ravens fan, this was not your
[13:01] Speaker 1: Detroit roster better than Baltimore roster. Detroit game plan better
[13:05] Speaker 1: than Baltimore game plan. So uh, it's official. Lions win
[13:11] Speaker 1: it thirty eight to thirty. It didn't feel like it
[13:14] Speaker 1: was thirty eight to thirty. It did not feel like that.
