Colin is joined by college football guru Josh Pate to talk ball. They start with UCLA being over their skis in the Big Ten and why it’s not a good job for a head coach (3:45), and debate which schools are truly the best five college football programs (9:00). Colin argues that Michigan is viewed as a better program than it actually is, believes the program will decline in the coming years, and they preview their upcoming game against Nebraska (12:15). They debate whether Lincoln Riley at USC and Brent Venables at Oklahoma will work long term (27:30), and Colin expresses his surprise that Texas A&M beat Notre Dame (33:30). Finally, they discuss whether Brian Kelly is the right coach for LSU (44:00). All lines provided by hardrock.bet (Timestamps may vary based on advertisements.) [0:58] Speaker 2: Pate joining us. He cuts through like nobody else with
[1:02] Speaker 2: college football. Obviously, host of Josh Page's College Football Show,
[1:07] Speaker 2: which is fantastic. So I got into this discussion the
[1:11] Speaker 2: other day. I'm known as a USC Homer so and
[1:14] Speaker 2: I lean into it because I think it's obnoxious and funny.
[1:16] Speaker 2: But whatever, we all have our team or our region
[1:20] Speaker 2: or whatever. And I was talking to a friend the
[1:22] Speaker 2: other day who's a UCLA Bruin, and I said, I
[1:26] Speaker 2: just don't think. I don't think UCLA is a good job.
[1:30] Speaker 2: I think it's one of those where it sounds like
[1:32] Speaker 2: it should be good. You're like, oh, there's a lot
[1:35] Speaker 2: of money in bel Air, but it's an international university.
[1:40] Speaker 2: NIL punishes college football programs. You can make. You can
[1:45] Speaker 2: be a top ten college basketball program with about four
[1:48] Speaker 2: million a year in college basketball if you're not at
[1:51] Speaker 2: sixteen to eighteen, which is where USC's at now. I mean,
[1:55] Speaker 2: there's a reason USC's defensive front looks better. Bought a
[2:00] Speaker 2: lot of it. So my take with UCLA is they
[2:04] Speaker 2: are bottom half of the Big ten in NIL because
[2:08] Speaker 2: it's in bel Air, Josh, you can't really and it's
[2:11] Speaker 2: a public university. Your coaches have to drive forty five
[2:14] Speaker 2: minutes or an hour to work. I don't think it's
[2:18] Speaker 2: a good job. I do not think it's a good job.
[2:21] Speaker 2: I would if I was an agent, I would not
[2:23] Speaker 2: send my best clients there. I don't think it has
[2:26] Speaker 2: a huge brand. You tell me you live in Nashville.
[2:30] Speaker 2: I spent eight nine years in Los Angeles. I don't
[2:34] Speaker 2: think it's a good I don't think it's a good
[2:36] Speaker 2: I don't think it's a top thirty college football job.
[2:40] Speaker 1: I would go further. I don't think it's top forty five.
[2:43] Speaker 1: Like you're talking about multiple G five jobs that are
[2:46] Speaker 1: better than UCLA and I. When we say that, by
[2:50] Speaker 1: the way, I know people who don't live in this
[2:52] Speaker 1: world and who don't immerse themselves in it, they almost
[2:55] Speaker 1: think you have an ax to grind, like you just
[2:56] Speaker 1: talked about, Oh, that's USCO morism. Well, dude, I grew
[2:59] Speaker 1: up in Harris County, Georgia, so I got no dog
[3:01] Speaker 1: in this fight. I'm just telling you what I perceive.
[3:04] Speaker 1: But I could be wrong. So then you ask around
[3:06] Speaker 1: and you ask forget agents. Yet of course agents are
[3:10] Speaker 1: echoing that to me, Colin. I just go to coaches.
[3:12] Speaker 1: When I see a coach's name in the running for
[3:15] Speaker 1: these jobs, I'll just go to the coach and I'll
[3:17] Speaker 1: ask him, and they'll usually shoot straight with you. And
[3:20] Speaker 1: I just think, probably even I've been a little taken
[3:23] Speaker 1: back by how many people who in a previous lifetime,
[3:29] Speaker 1: we would look at it the job they're at, and
[3:30] Speaker 1: you would think, oh, it's a slam dunk. Yeh, he
[3:32] Speaker 1: can get the UCLA job. He's going to take it.
[3:35] Speaker 1: That in the modern day look at it and say, dude,
[3:38] Speaker 1: there's no way. And we're not just talking about head coaches,
[3:41] Speaker 1: like I'm telling you, there are coordinators out there. There
[3:44] Speaker 1: are pretty high level coordinators out there that would not
[3:47] Speaker 1: leave where they are right now for the UCLA job.
[3:50] Speaker 1: And you mentioned it's bottom half of the big ten.
[3:53] Speaker 1: Well that's in a vacuum. So yes, it's bottom half
[3:56] Speaker 1: of big ten in vacuum. But then like you said,
[3:58] Speaker 1: when you factor in, hey, if you take the Indiana job,
[4:01] Speaker 1: I mean you could do like Signity and blow it up.
[4:03] Speaker 1: But even if it's not what Signitti has made it,
[4:06] Speaker 1: you're going to live in Bloomington, Indiana very affordable. So
[4:09] Speaker 1: you're asking me to go take a bottom half job.
[4:11] Speaker 1: You're going asking me to be distant second in my
[4:14] Speaker 1: own town. You're asking me to be second on my
[4:16] Speaker 1: own campus. When it comes to the athletic department, You're
[4:19] Speaker 1: asking me to take over a place where the nil
[4:21] Speaker 1: infrastructure is really discombobulated. They're not fractionally as put together
[4:26] Speaker 1: in football as they are for basketball. There and you're
[4:29] Speaker 1: asking me, by the way, to compete with superpower programs
[4:33] Speaker 1: like Oregon and Ohio State and Penn State and Michigan.
[4:36] Speaker 1: There's just I don't have much good to say about it.
[4:39] Speaker 1: I wish I was wrong. I wish you were wrong.
[4:41] Speaker 1: We're not.
[4:42] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean I and the football stadium's forty five
[4:46] Speaker 2: minutes off campus. I think there was a time when
[4:49] Speaker 2: you could you could get away. There was a time
[4:54] Speaker 2: when it was Terry Donahue and then Dick for Meal
[4:57] Speaker 2: and it would get on ABC and it was part
[4:59] Speaker 2: of the Pack twelve, and there was something to be
[5:01] Speaker 2: said about you're playing in the Rose Bowl and the
[5:04] Speaker 2: weather was cold everywhere else, and now you're like, oh,
[5:07] Speaker 2: it's warm in UCLA. Like I could see a quarterback
[5:10] Speaker 2: or wide receivers, and they do put guys in the NFL.
[5:13] Speaker 2: But I think there was a moment when Chip Kelly
[5:15] Speaker 2: said I'd rather go be a coordinator in a Big
[5:19] Speaker 2: Ten school than the coach of UCLA. And to me,
[5:22] Speaker 2: it's like, oh, that's the tipping point, because Chip knows
[5:26] Speaker 2: you know Chip, Chip's coached at Oregon, He's coached at
[5:29] Speaker 2: the NFL. He's like, no, yeah, I'm and I know Chip.
[5:32] Speaker 2: Chip was at my sixtieth birthday party. Chip likes La.
[5:36] Speaker 2: Chip and his wife love La. It's not that he's
[5:40] Speaker 2: not an outsider. So you know, it's funny. I said
[5:46] Speaker 2: years ago, I felt this. I don't feel it anymore.
[5:48] Speaker 2: I said years ago, I thought the Texas job, I said,
[5:54] Speaker 2: take away the top three quarterbacks in the NFL, whoever
[5:57] Speaker 2: has those, and they're in their prime. Those are the
[5:59] Speaker 2: best football jobs America. Kansas City, Buffalo, Baltimore. You know,
[6:05] Speaker 2: those are the best jobs. You have an NFL pension,
[6:08] Speaker 2: your coaches don't leave, you don't have to recruit players.
[6:11] Speaker 2: But I always said fourth is Texas and and I
[6:18] Speaker 2: as we talk about what kind of job it is,
[6:19] Speaker 2: I always think, like Texas is the best college job
[6:22] Speaker 2: Ohio State, Georgia. Then we can argue, like Notre Dame.
[6:27] Speaker 2: There's an academic umbrella. It's kind of you know, it's
[6:30] Speaker 2: it's in the middle of nowhere, it's you know, it's small,
[6:33] Speaker 2: it's private, bad weather. I mean, my wife wouldn't be
[6:37] Speaker 2: overjoyed to move to South and Indiana. Like all things considered.
[6:41] Speaker 2: If I said to you top five jobs, I want
[6:45] Speaker 2: you to consider pressure, pay conference, geographic location. Remember Oregon.
[6:51] Speaker 2: You know, as an outsider, if you don't have a
[6:52] Speaker 2: lot of players in your state, you generally don't have
[6:55] Speaker 2: a good program. Phil Knight changes that. California changes it.
[6:59] Speaker 2: If I said to you five programs, all things considered,
[7:03] Speaker 2: where are you?
[7:04] Speaker 1: You are going to think I'm joking with you. But
[7:06] Speaker 1: Kentucky football would be the job that I would want
[7:08] Speaker 1: to take. Mark Stoops makes close to ten million dollars
[7:12] Speaker 1: a year. The goal there is to win seven games.
[7:16] Speaker 1: Rural Kentucky, you can be there forever. He's got a
[7:19] Speaker 1: massive buyout, and unlike a lot of these other guys,
[7:22] Speaker 1: he is the only place where you blend SEC payscale
[7:27] Speaker 1: without SEC pressure. I can't believe people don't look at
[7:31] Speaker 1: Mark Stoops and say that guy figured it out. Now,
[7:35] Speaker 1: if you do want to compete for a national championship,
[7:37] Speaker 1: the answer is the University of Georgia. Georgia has long
[7:40] Speaker 1: been that. And I remember when Saban was at Alabama
[7:44] Speaker 1: and everyone would look at Saban and is he going
[7:46] Speaker 1: to go to Texas? But I remember someone saying, no,
[7:50] Speaker 1: forget Saban to Texas, like, yeah, if he were to
[7:53] Speaker 1: take that job, it would suck for Alabama, but Hit'd
[7:55] Speaker 1: do probably the same thing at Texas. He's I don't
[7:57] Speaker 1: think you could dominate much more than Saban did at Alabama.
[8:00] Speaker 1: But what people kept saying was you need to be
[8:03] Speaker 1: paying attention to what happens with Georgia. This was like
[8:06] Speaker 1: the Mark Rick Georgia era. Yeah, Georgia for a long time.
[8:10] Speaker 1: I grew up there. For a long time. Georgia, like
[8:13] Speaker 1: good was the enemy of great, and they were just good.
[8:15] Speaker 1: It was pretty good, it was kind of good. And
[8:17] Speaker 1: there was this like nether region. There were never bad
[8:21] Speaker 1: enough for a firing to happen, they were never good
[8:23] Speaker 1: enough to win a title. And the rest of the
[8:26] Speaker 1: SEC was so happy with Georgia being like that. And
[8:29] Speaker 1: finally it got to a tipping point. I really think
[8:31] Speaker 1: Saban and to an extent, Urban Meyer, turned the heat
[8:34] Speaker 1: up in the SEC enough to where Georgia made a move.
[8:37] Speaker 1: And then Georgia went and got Nick Saban's guy and
[8:39] Speaker 1: Kirby Smart, and the day they hired Smart, there's no
[8:43] Speaker 1: guarantees in this world. But I thought to myself if
[8:46] Speaker 1: that is the guy that can replicate Saban's model or
[8:48] Speaker 1: come roughly close to it, if you take those ingredients
[8:51] Speaker 1: and you throw them in Athens, Georgia, I just thought
[8:54] Speaker 1: it was a powder keg, the lights of which in
[8:56] Speaker 1: a generation prior to me being born, they used to
[8:58] Speaker 1: talk about Florida. You read the books, you listen to
[9:01] Speaker 1: the interviews, you read the Paul bear Bryant quotes when
[9:04] Speaker 1: he was at Bama of hoping no one ever figures
[9:07] Speaker 1: out Florida, because if anyone ever figured out the University
[9:10] Speaker 1: of Florida, then they'd be a monster to deal with.
[9:12] Speaker 1: So Kentucky, if I don't want to win a title, Georgia,
[9:15] Speaker 1: if I do want to win a title, would be
[9:16] Speaker 1: my two answers.
[9:18] Speaker 2: Michigan sounds like a greater program than it is. So
[9:23] Speaker 2: Ohio State is essentially the SEC. Just northep the obsession,
[9:28] Speaker 2: the passion, the relentlessness. I mean, Luke Fickle gets an hour,
[9:32] Speaker 2: you're out, that's the SEC. Michigan's patient. Michigan's got the
[9:36] Speaker 2: medical school, the business school. And the truth is, if
[9:39] Speaker 2: you take Harbaugh out, they'd havemn't egged it for a
[9:43] Speaker 2: lot of years where it's like, well they're okay, they're
[9:46] Speaker 2: not special. When they hired somebody on staff, my first
[9:52] Speaker 2: take was, Oh, that's Michigan. That's not going to work.
[9:54] Speaker 2: That's not going to work. That as much as I
[10:00] Speaker 2: loved harbaughn Michigan is that Michigan is a program that
[10:05] Speaker 2: people instinctively helmet fight song, Harbaugh Brady think of a
[10:11] Speaker 2: top five or six program, but I don't think it is.
[10:15] Speaker 2: I don't think Michigan is a top ten. Now I'm
[10:18] Speaker 2: saying this, you take the job. Okay, you take the job.
[10:22] Speaker 2: Oregon has Phil Knight, Ohio State has historically been more obsessed.
[10:27] Speaker 2: Penn State's got even athletes. Oh damn. Now Washington and
[10:31] Speaker 2: USC are in it. That I would not be surprised
[10:33] Speaker 2: if Michigan went ten years and was kind of an
[10:37] Speaker 2: eight win program. I would not be shocked.
[10:41] Speaker 1: That's a lot. Let me break this down. Okay, So
[10:44] Speaker 1: my perception, my perception was kind of with an asterisk
[10:48] Speaker 1: next to it. When when Jim Harball left and they
[10:51] Speaker 1: give Sharon the job. Because I could never prove this,
[10:54] Speaker 1: but you could. You'd be tough for you to convince me.
[10:57] Speaker 1: There weren't some conversations in that building up of we've
[11:00] Speaker 1: got this looming in Cuba thing, don't really know which
[11:03] Speaker 1: way it's going to go. Let's just build a bridge
[11:07] Speaker 1: right now, and who knows. Maybe Shrine's the perfect guy
[11:09] Speaker 1: and it's a moot point, but at the very least,
[11:11] Speaker 1: let's just give ourselves an ability to have this conversation
[11:14] Speaker 1: again two or three years down the road. And if
[11:16] Speaker 1: he's great, it's a moot point, and if he's not,
[11:17] Speaker 1: it'll give us an open door. I still think there's
[11:20] Speaker 1: a little bit of that, and there's a lot of
[11:22] Speaker 1: remains to be seen on that. Here's what I wonder,
[11:25] Speaker 1: all right, So the malaise that was Michigan, which was
[11:29] Speaker 1: basically my upbringing, Like I came up, I'm in high school,
[11:32] Speaker 1: mid two thousands, my college years. That's the area you're
[11:36] Speaker 1: talking about with Michigan. I'm sort of on the back
[11:38] Speaker 1: part of Lloyd car and so I hear about when
[11:41] Speaker 1: Michigan was great more than I'm watching them great Texas
[11:44] Speaker 1: kind of the same way Mac Brown towards the end,
[11:46] Speaker 1: and then Texas is the same way. I wonder if
[11:50] Speaker 1: you're allowed to have that for an extended period of
[11:53] Speaker 1: time anymore. With the way money is in the sport
[11:55] Speaker 1: right now, and so also how volatile ross turn is.
[12:01] Speaker 1: Because if it's going to be real, here's what it's
[12:04] Speaker 1: going to do. It's gonna be really hard to gauge
[12:06] Speaker 1: a coach because it used to be like I would
[12:09] Speaker 1: define program as a four year rolling blend of staff
[12:13] Speaker 1: grades and recruiting rankings and development and NFL draft production. Well,
[12:18] Speaker 1: how am I even doing that if we've thrown it
[12:20] Speaker 1: all in a blender in thirty eight percent of your
[12:23] Speaker 1: roster year over year is coming from someone else's program.
[12:25] Speaker 1: So I don't really know how to grade a coach
[12:28] Speaker 1: so much as I know how to create a talent acquirer.
[12:30] Speaker 1: I just wonder if they don't look at it and say,
[12:34] Speaker 1: what used to be okay here is not okay anymore.
[12:37] Speaker 1: That's why it always helps when your rivals are winning.
[12:40] Speaker 1: It helped Auburn down in the South when Alabama was winning.
[12:43] Speaker 1: There's no way Auburn goes in with a title in
[12:44] Speaker 1: twenty ten if you don't have the reverse reaction to
[12:48] Speaker 1: the saving thing. And likewise, at Michigan you've got Ohio State,
[12:52] Speaker 1: which will always turn the heat up on you. But
[12:54] Speaker 1: I'm more interested in what you're talking about the new
[12:56] Speaker 1: additions to the conference. What is Oregon long term? I've
[13:00] Speaker 1: actually got some my high expectations for Washington long term.
[13:03] Speaker 1: Probably Hi, same country. Yeah, I just I see where
[13:08] Speaker 1: you're coming from. Okay, I feel the same way about
[13:10] Speaker 1: the profile of the program. I feel the same way.
[13:13] Speaker 1: I just don't know if they if you've got big
[13:15] Speaker 1: enough money that walks around and does what it took
[13:18] Speaker 1: for them to get Bryce Underwood, I'm not sure that
[13:21] Speaker 1: they just sit there and say, I guess we're good
[13:23] Speaker 1: enough with eight wins. Like if that happened, I just
[13:26] Speaker 1: think they'd be overly aggressive and keep hiring and keep
[13:28] Speaker 1: hiring and keep hiring until they hire their way out
[13:32] Speaker 1: of it, which is a horrific strategy in college sports.
[13:34] Speaker 1: But that means they wouldn't try it.
[13:36] Speaker 2: Think about this. Hardball won instantly in San Diego, instantly
[13:40] Speaker 2: with the Niners. He won instantly with the Chargers, turn
[13:44] Speaker 2: them around. Stanford he didn't win instantly, but he was
[13:49] Speaker 2: a forty point dog went to the coliseum and beat
[13:52] Speaker 2: USC so instantly. He changed the culture. Michigan took a while.
[13:56] Speaker 1: Yo, dude, that's its own documentary.
[13:59] Speaker 2: Yeah, Michigan took a while for Jim Harball because I
[14:04] Speaker 2: always said this, if you're too worried. One of the
[14:08] Speaker 2: advantages the SEC has, like culturally they really don't care
[14:12] Speaker 2: about the swim team. There are certain universities the West
[14:16] Speaker 2: Coast really cares about it. There's some ACC schools that do.
[14:19] Speaker 2: Michigan has always looked at Ohio State is like, well,
[14:23] Speaker 2: academically there are junior college We wouldn't do what they
[14:27] Speaker 2: would do. And my take is Oregon just entered the conference.
[14:31] Speaker 2: Oregon has no effect on Ohio State, either does USC
[14:35] Speaker 2: or Washington. But I think Oregon, Washington and USC can
[14:40] Speaker 2: beat Michigan regularly. I don't think they can beat Ohio
[14:43] Speaker 2: State regularly. And that's my take is that when the
[14:48] Speaker 2: Pac twelve came to the Big Ten, there was this
[14:51] Speaker 2: sense that woh those West Coast schools, it's big boy football.
[14:55] Speaker 2: And my take is, oh, Jim Harbaugh leaves Michigan in
[14:59] Speaker 2: five years, were going to look up and go they're
[15:01] Speaker 2: the school in trouble. That USC's hummon, Oregon's gonna hum
[15:06] Speaker 2: Washington whenever they get the right coach is a top
[15:08] Speaker 2: ten program. Let's be honest. James Franklin is one of
[15:12] Speaker 2: the top five recruiters in the sport. They're gonna be fine.
[15:15] Speaker 2: I mean they have they have dudes. I just think
[15:18] Speaker 2: Michigan and I and I know everybody loves Underwood, myself included,
[15:22] Speaker 2: but I look at it and I think Hired within
[15:25] Speaker 2: conference is much stronger. They care about stuff that a
[15:30] Speaker 2: lot of football powers don't. I have a weird vibe
[15:33] Speaker 2: about Michigan and Ohio State now is playing. I mean,
[15:38] Speaker 2: they are rolling right now, they are. They feel like
[15:41] Speaker 2: Georgia four years ago.
[15:43] Speaker 1: I remember when I was I used to work in
[15:45] Speaker 1: a warehouse and listen to you all the time describe
[15:48] Speaker 1: fan bases, and you would talk about sweater vest fan bases,
[15:51] Speaker 1: and you're kind of describing the sweater vest ish miss
[15:55] Speaker 1: of Michigan. So another layer of that theory to test
[16:00] Speaker 1: out here is I noticed a different vibe off of
[16:03] Speaker 1: them over the past twenty four to thirty six months
[16:05] Speaker 1: with the whole Stallion's thing, with the whole NCA investigation,
[16:08] Speaker 1: there was there was this there was this sort of
[16:11] Speaker 1: throwing back in Michigan's face, the hypocrisy water balloon of
[16:15] Speaker 1: do you guys have looked down your nose at the
[16:18] Speaker 1: rest of college football for so long, and it's you
[16:21] Speaker 1: that's wrapped up in this, and instead of looking and
[16:24] Speaker 1: kind of defending themselves or you know, apologizing for it,
[16:27] Speaker 1: they just kind of said, you know, like, if we
[16:29] Speaker 1: got to get the sweat of us dirty, if we
[16:31] Speaker 1: got to get some dirt under our fingernails, then so
[16:33] Speaker 1: be it. And I don't know long term what kind
[16:36] Speaker 1: of ramification that has. There are always these inflection points
[16:40] Speaker 1: in the trajectory of programs or businesses or whatever, and
[16:44] Speaker 1: you look back on it when you're, you know, doing
[16:46] Speaker 1: the documentary, you're writing a book twenty years down the road,
[16:48] Speaker 1: and this moment in time affected this this and this downstream.
[16:53] Speaker 1: I still don't think we know fully how much that
[16:58] Speaker 1: right there, that past twenty twenty four, we're thirty six,
[17:00] Speaker 1: forty eight months, was an inflection point that changes the
[17:03] Speaker 1: attitude around there. And it could be nothing, by the way,
[17:05] Speaker 1: but it could be something that makes them a little
[17:08] Speaker 1: less apologetic about being a little more serious about football.
[17:11] Speaker 1: It's not that they weren't, but your point's well taken.
[17:14] Speaker 1: Some places, they will literally do whatever it takes to win.
[17:18] Speaker 1: I grew up there, that's right. I grew up in
[17:20] Speaker 1: the South.
[17:21] Speaker 2: There's about eight of them.
[17:22] Speaker 1: Yeah, we never perceived Michigan that way down south. We
[17:25] Speaker 1: perceived Ohio State like that. We always thought Penn State
[17:29] Speaker 1: maybe like that. We never thought that about Michigan. And
[17:33] Speaker 1: recently there's a little more of that vibe coming off
[17:36] Speaker 1: Michigan to where I still question if they would let
[17:39] Speaker 1: it sink back to that eight or nine win degree
[17:42] Speaker 1: without getting the ultra aggressive in the hiring. Hiring doesn't
[17:45] Speaker 1: guarantee anything. I just don't know that they would sit
[17:48] Speaker 1: back and you know, cross the legs and you know,
[17:51] Speaker 1: sit back in the rocking chair and say, oh, well,
[17:53] Speaker 1: at least the GPA is high like they used to. Yeah.
[17:56] Speaker 2: So, by the way, Michigan faces Nebraska this and it's
[18:00] Speaker 2: probably going to be a field goal game. It's at Nebraska.
[18:05] Speaker 2: I don't know. I probably would take I would probably
[18:08] Speaker 2: take Underwood making a play and winning the game late.
[18:12] Speaker 2: If I had to bet, I would just say two
[18:15] Speaker 2: really talented quarterbacks. I would probably take Michigan again. Underwood
[18:20] Speaker 2: close game twenty seven, twenty four, makes a play late,
[18:23] Speaker 2: What say you?
[18:24] Speaker 1: I am going to this one? Never been to a
[18:26] Speaker 1: Nebraska game before looking forward to it. I believe in
[18:30] Speaker 1: a lot of that rule year three stuff, at least
[18:32] Speaker 1: at the college level. If that's right, and he's there
[18:36] Speaker 1: year three and they scratched out of winning its Cincy
[18:39] Speaker 1: early on, and Cincey's quarterback ran for over one hundred
[18:42] Speaker 1: against him, by the way, which is something underwould absolutely
[18:45] Speaker 1: could do in this game. I just if a lot
[18:47] Speaker 1: of what I believe about them, if their wide receiver
[18:51] Speaker 1: core is one of the more underrated position rooms in
[18:53] Speaker 1: the Big Ten, which I believe, if I believe that
[18:56] Speaker 1: they've got the kind of guys that can stand up
[18:58] Speaker 1: at the line of scrimmage, at least they all made
[19:00] Speaker 1: team like Michigan, if that's right. This is kind of
[19:02] Speaker 1: the way that you prove it's the stage you prove
[19:04] Speaker 1: it on. So I don't have a strong feel on it. Actually,
[19:08] Speaker 1: later in the week we've gotten I kind of do
[19:10] Speaker 1: have a stronger feel on it. I think it's going
[19:11] Speaker 1: to be a Nebraska day. I think they're gonna win
[19:13] Speaker 1: that game, and I think the talk around them becomes
[19:16] Speaker 1: a little different. Like I thought this is a fringe
[19:18] Speaker 1: playoff team at the outset, because I thought they'd get
[19:21] Speaker 1: one or two of these key wins could afford to
[19:23] Speaker 1: drop to and be a ten and two non Big
[19:26] Speaker 1: Ten Championship type playoff team.

[19:34] Speaker 2: Green River Whiskey. Whether a dry whiskey or single barrel bourbon.
[19:39] Speaker 2: You're getting over a century of craftsmanship packed into every bottle.
[19:43] Speaker 2: Hop on over to Greenriver Whiskey dot com and discover
[19:47] Speaker 2: a legend in a bottle today.
[19:54] Speaker 1: Yeah.
[19:54] Speaker 2: No, I mean they have to go to u SC
[19:57] Speaker 2: if they lose this game. Oklahoma was clearly the side,
[20:01] Speaker 2: clearly the better team, more juniors than seniors, and I
[20:04] Speaker 2: think Oklahoma finally has their quarterback, and I think it's interesting.
[20:08] Speaker 2: I didn't think brtt Venables would have been my choice,
[20:13] Speaker 2: but I do think when a defensive coach gets his
[20:18] Speaker 2: star quarterback, there's a magic that happens. That's what's hurt
[20:21] Speaker 2: Mike Tomlin with the Steelers, he just big bend, got old,
[20:24] Speaker 2: just can't find the quarterback. And Belichick even proved like
[20:29] Speaker 2: defensive coaches wants the star quarterback. If you miss on
[20:32] Speaker 2: Cam and Mac Jones like, you get fired. So I
[20:35] Speaker 2: think BRTT Venables has found his quarterback for the time being,
[20:38] Speaker 2: and it's like, okay, So he's got a bunch of
[20:39] Speaker 2: juniors and seniors on defense. He knows defense, he can
[20:42] Speaker 2: build culture. He's a tough guy. He wasn't Clemson. It'll work.
[20:46] Speaker 2: It's interesting with Lincoln Riley. He's the offensive guy. He
[20:50] Speaker 2: had his quarterback, he found his defensive coordinator. So last
[20:54] Speaker 2: week I had my questions about USC but I watched
[20:58] Speaker 2: them last week and I thought because when I watched
[21:02] Speaker 2: Oklahoma beat Michigan, I thought, Okay, this coach is gonna work.
[21:05] Speaker 2: It's gonna work. And you can't just fire coaches, Josh
[21:09] Speaker 2: like you used to, because the nil you got to
[21:11] Speaker 2: raise twenty million dollars before you buy out the coach.
[21:14] Speaker 2: So this I've said, the NIL is a coach's best friend.
[21:20] Speaker 2: So Lincoln Riley's an eighty million dollar buyout. They just
[21:22] Speaker 2: built three hundred million in facilities. They raised eighteen million
[21:25] Speaker 2: a year. Lincoln Ronny is not going anywhere. But when
[21:28] Speaker 2: I watched Michigan Oklahoma, I thought, Okay, he's gonna survive here.
[21:32] Speaker 2: They're not buying him out. He's gonna survive. And I
[21:35] Speaker 2: watched I know it was Purdue, but I watched their
[21:39] Speaker 2: defensive front and I'm like, oh shit, you at this
[21:42] Speaker 2: is a Big ten team. USC is controlling the line
[21:45] Speaker 2: of scrimmage. They mean they are pushing up now Michigan
[21:48] Speaker 2: State's offense is better than after that, it's Illinois as
[21:51] Speaker 2: a real test. Albeit that one in of Champagne a
[21:56] Speaker 2: glorious Champagne, the champagn aans better than the town. But
[22:01] Speaker 2: my take was My take was, Oh, I think Venables
[22:05] Speaker 2: and Lincoln Riley found their way. I think the NIL
[22:09] Speaker 2: looks like a magic elixir, but I think both of
[22:12] Speaker 2: those coaches experimented with it, maybe over used it, and
[22:16] Speaker 2: now they feel like they've kind of figured out the
[22:19] Speaker 2: portal and figured out the NIL. My take is Venables
[22:23] Speaker 2: and Lincoln are going to work. I know it's early
[22:26] Speaker 2: in year three, but I feel it strongly.
[22:30] Speaker 1: Do you? Yeah, you are describing something I agree with,
[22:34] Speaker 1: something I have begged Daboswenty to explore at Clemson to
[22:39] Speaker 1: no success. You're describing what Brian Kelly has figured out
[22:43] Speaker 1: in the last year or so at LS. Yes. I
[22:46] Speaker 1: mean he walked in that building and almost from an
[22:48] Speaker 1: egotistical standpoint, tried to prove a point by flushing the
[22:52] Speaker 1: building of Louisiana people and a huge mistake, and he
[22:57] Speaker 1: course corrected on that from a personnel side, and of
[22:59] Speaker 1: course on defensive hiring, and now voila, they can win
[23:03] Speaker 1: a game twenty to ten last week. And it's hideous,
[23:05] Speaker 1: but it's a win. I fully believe what you're saying
[23:09] Speaker 1: about Lincoln at USC. Here's the shame of it. The
[23:12] Speaker 1: shame of it is he didn't do it when he
[23:14] Speaker 1: first got hired, like he brought a guy with him
[23:17] Speaker 1: that was very inferior as his defensive coordinator. I've got
[23:20] Speaker 1: my own theories about why that happened, but it happened,
[23:23] Speaker 1: all right. So he makes the right move. He made
[23:25] Speaker 1: the wrong decision at the outset, he course corrects properly
[23:29] Speaker 1: the problem as we I think you and I talked
[23:31] Speaker 1: about this a couple of weeks ago. Okay, then you
[23:32] Speaker 1: find yourself at a major job three years in asking
[23:37] Speaker 1: for patients and no one wants to give you patients.
[23:40] Speaker 1: But if they will get it to him, I do
[23:42] Speaker 1: believe it'll work out. I've always believed that about Lincoln Riley.
[23:45] Speaker 1: I just hate that it took this long to figure
[23:48] Speaker 1: it out. And you know, we're still in the the
[23:51] Speaker 1: stage of that. But I do think he figured it out.
[23:54] Speaker 2: You know, Josh, what happens is and Saban found this
[23:57] Speaker 2: out when he left Michigan State to LSU. So when
[23:59] Speaker 2: you take a job and you're kind of scooting out
[24:02] Speaker 2: of town, this is Lane Kiffin at Tennessee. So what
[24:06] Speaker 2: you basically tell your staff is, guys, the private jet
[24:10] Speaker 2: leads in six hours. If you get on it, you're hired. Well,
[24:15] Speaker 2: the truth is, with Lincoln at Oklahoma or with Lane
[24:19] Speaker 2: at Tennessee, there's a couple of guys on your staff
[24:22] Speaker 2: you're probably not or hoping don't get on the plane.
[24:27] Speaker 2: But when they do get on the plane and move
[24:29] Speaker 2: their families cross country, then you owe them two years
[24:33] Speaker 2: of employment for their kids and their family. So Alex
[24:36] Speaker 2: Grinch got on the plane. I think he knew halfway
[24:40] Speaker 2: through year one. I can't fire him. It wasn't working.
[24:45] Speaker 2: And so I think, and this happens especially in college.
[24:48] Speaker 2: In the NFL, guys don't jump team to team very often.
[24:51] Speaker 2: You know, Andy reads out of a job then people
[24:54] Speaker 2: go bit on him. But in college you sometimes lead
[24:57] Speaker 2: big program to big program and you have to get
[24:59] Speaker 2: in a private jet and out of dodge and I
[25:02] Speaker 2: think what happened to Lincoln and this wasn't the Brett
[25:04] Speaker 2: venimal experience. This was not him because remember Lincoln left
[25:08] Speaker 2: in the middle of the night and everybody's like, oh,
[25:10] Speaker 2: we need a coach, and there was some discussion for
[25:12] Speaker 2: a couple of weeks. But I think Lincoln had guys
[25:14] Speaker 2: get on the jet and you have to be loyal
[25:17] Speaker 2: to him. I think this version of the staff, the
[25:20] Speaker 2: GM from Notre Dame Lynn the defensive coordinator, it's a
[25:25] Speaker 2: grown up staff. It's a really good staff. By the way,
[25:28] Speaker 2: Nick Saban, near the end of his tenure at Alabama,
[25:31] Speaker 2: I thought had a bad staff.
[25:33] Speaker 1: Yeah, you were right.
[25:35] Speaker 2: I thought he had a really bad I watched him
[25:36] Speaker 2: a couple of big games, and I'm like, there's something
[25:38] Speaker 2: missing here. The defense is not as good. Nick's the CEO,
[25:42] Speaker 2: you know, and there's nothing you could do at his age,
[25:44] Speaker 2: he can't be up twenty three hours a day. But
[25:48] Speaker 2: I think the US I just think the USC thing's
[25:51] Speaker 2: gonna work. I don't know if it works this year,
[25:54] Speaker 2: but if you doubt if he can coach, watch Jaden Mayava.
[25:58] Speaker 2: He is a completely different player than last year. Last
[26:01] Speaker 2: year he was sloppy, he was almost immature. Boy he
[26:06] Speaker 2: is on he is a grown up now.
[26:10] Speaker 1: I'm telling you what else to watch. He plays within
[26:13] Speaker 1: Lincoln's system and that sounds common sensical. There's a guy
[26:18] Speaker 1: starting at quarterback for the Chicago Bears right now and
[26:21] Speaker 1: sometimes failed to do that and his talent just bailed
[26:25] Speaker 1: him out and he could do circus things. But also
[26:27] Speaker 1: it will drive you crazy as a coordinator, play caller,
[26:31] Speaker 1: head coach. But what are you gonna do? I mean,
[26:34] Speaker 1: you got a guy out there and he's got top
[26:36] Speaker 1: top half of first round NFL potential, and yet he's
[26:39] Speaker 1: just sort of winging it, not playing within your system.
[26:42] Speaker 1: And I've thought for a while, and I guarantee if
[26:44] Speaker 1: you got truth Seeruim in that staff, they're probably a
[26:47] Speaker 1: lot more comfortable with their quarterback situation right now because
[26:49] Speaker 1: they got a guy they developed, but they got a
[26:51] Speaker 1: guy that plays within their system because you can coach
[26:54] Speaker 1: around that, like you can game plan around that. The
[26:56] Speaker 1: other same thing with Milroe at Alabama last year. Game
[27:00] Speaker 1: plan around this. Right, that's right here we can deal
[27:04] Speaker 1: with right.
[27:06] Speaker 2: Finally, A and M beats Notre Dame. I was surprised,
[27:09] Speaker 2: were you?
[27:11] Speaker 1: I was in a boat where I wasn't shot. I
[27:14] Speaker 1: was mildly surprised. I was surprised at the game script
[27:17] Speaker 1: more so than anything. Two games last week Georgia Tennessee
[27:21] Speaker 1: A and m Notre Dame, both of them get into
[27:23] Speaker 1: the forties and I didn't really see that coming. I
[27:26] Speaker 1: just thought to myself, you know, I went to college
[27:29] Speaker 1: station in the spring, and all they're talking about is, boy,
[27:32] Speaker 1: we got that Notre Dame game early in the season
[27:34] Speaker 1: and this right here, and we know they're that, and
[27:38] Speaker 1: we think we can be that. That's when we'll go
[27:41] Speaker 1: prove it. And we got a three headed monster tailback.
[27:44] Speaker 1: Look at this offensive line. So I'm thinking to myself,
[27:47] Speaker 1: nineteen seventy four style football, and it did not unfold
[27:50] Speaker 1: that way. And so what you end up having to do.
[27:53] Speaker 1: Colin Kleines, the offensive coordinator there no I remember sitting
[27:56] Speaker 1: there talking to him in the spring and he said,
[27:57] Speaker 1: I'll tell you one thing we're going to have. We're
[27:59] Speaker 1: going to have an increased vertical element in our passing
[28:02] Speaker 1: game if our quarterback can execute it. Because they knew
[28:06] Speaker 1: they hit hit on those transfer portal receivers. Those guys
[28:08] Speaker 1: are monsters. One of them was kind of hurt last
[28:10] Speaker 1: year Conceptciance, Well, he's back craver as a monster. He said,
[28:14] Speaker 1: if we if we got a guy that can pull
[28:15] Speaker 1: the trigger, we'll have that. Well, they turns out they
[28:18] Speaker 1: needed it in week three and they need to trade
[28:21] Speaker 1: points and they need to come from behind, and that
[28:24] Speaker 1: was what surprised me that they were able to sort
[28:26] Speaker 1: of on the fly. It's the same way with Kirby
[28:29] Speaker 1: at Georgia. But Kirby's been there a long time. So
[28:31] Speaker 1: when that game got uncomfortable for Georgia fans last week
[28:34] Speaker 1: and the other guys scoring an uncomfortable amount of points,
[28:37] Speaker 1: they're totally comfortable being uncomfortable as a team. A and
[28:40] Speaker 1: M hasn't proven that, so they don't have that equity.
[28:42] Speaker 1: They don't have that benefit of the doubt in my mind,
[28:44] Speaker 1: and they totally earned it the other night. But that
[28:47] Speaker 1: is such a huge feather in the cap because there's
[28:50] Speaker 1: always been this crowd anytime I talk about Texas A
[28:53] Speaker 1: and M.
[28:54] Speaker 2: Oh it's the great underachiever in the sport.
[28:57] Speaker 1: It's the yes, it's it's yes bar none. But people
[29:01] Speaker 1: say Arizona State, let me counter with Texas A and M.
[29:04] Speaker 1: Because I always ask the people that tell me they
[29:06] Speaker 1: cannot cannot, cannot, which I believe is just have not
[29:10] Speaker 1: disguised as cannot. I ask, what is it you need
[29:13] Speaker 1: to win big time in this sport that they don't have.
[29:16] Speaker 1: I already know the answer. Nothing. They just don't have
[29:18] Speaker 1: the Wikipedia page because they have fantastically fumbled higher after
[29:23] Speaker 1: hire after hire, and they don't really know what greatness
[29:26] Speaker 1: looks like. So they sometimes get confused into thinking they've
[29:29] Speaker 1: got it and they don't have it. Mike Elko, though,
[29:32] Speaker 1: I will tell you this now, when he came there
[29:34] Speaker 1: from Duke, a lot of the personnel people hit me
[29:36] Speaker 1: up from around college football and they said, don't know
[29:39] Speaker 1: if it's going to work. Personalities could clash all this,
[29:42] Speaker 1: and that A and M just hired the best evaluator
[29:45] Speaker 1: and developer that we've seen in quite a while. And
[29:48] Speaker 1: these are guys who cover the entire sport. And so
[29:51] Speaker 1: you know, you get there and you get all that money,
[29:53] Speaker 1: and you have the apparatus to go sign top ten classes,
[29:56] Speaker 1: go get guys out of the portal. But notice, unlike Jimbo, notice,
[30:01] Speaker 1: over the next couple of years, the progression and the
[30:04] Speaker 1: development of guys on A and m's roster, the ones
[30:07] Speaker 1: who get better. There's some notable exceptions out there right
[30:10] Speaker 1: now of teams that returned to a bunch of starters
[30:13] Speaker 1: and they're no different than they were last year. The
[30:15] Speaker 1: mark of a program that's got big time upward mobility
[30:19] Speaker 1: is their returning starters are actually better than they were
[30:21] Speaker 1: last year, which sounds like it's easy to do. It's
[30:24] Speaker 1: not easy to do. That I think will be a
[30:27] Speaker 1: hallmark of their program. Like, I don't think they're going anywhere.
[30:29] Speaker 1: I think they're going to be in the mix for
[30:31] Speaker 1: quite a while.

[32:31] Speaker 2: and I've seen it. College basketball coaches do it. And
[32:34] Speaker 2: I've said, you know, you don't see it in the
[32:36] Speaker 2: NFL much because you're in a big city. The media
[32:38] Speaker 2: is tough everywhere, and you also have an owner above
[32:42] Speaker 2: you that you don't want to embarrass the franchise. But
[32:44] Speaker 2: in college football, the coach is often the highest paid
[32:47] Speaker 2: state employee you can really control practice. The media is
[32:50] Speaker 2: small town, so you get into kind of this kind
[32:53] Speaker 2: of power vacuum where you kind of are the biggest
[32:55] Speaker 2: guy in the state and you kind of get into
[32:57] Speaker 2: your ego and Brian was got very tribal and protective
[33:02] Speaker 2: and it you know, he doesn't have a natty. It
[33:07] Speaker 2: took him a while to get it rolling. There was
[33:08] Speaker 2: the incident where the student died on campus. Like there's
[33:11] Speaker 2: there's a lot of stuff here with Brian Kelly. He's
[33:13] Speaker 2: not always the most likable. There was the fake Southern
[33:16] Speaker 2: accent or whatever it is. But I still contend that
[33:23] Speaker 2: I don't know if he has the relentless recruiting energy
[33:27] Speaker 2: he used to do. I like Brian Kelly, but I
[33:31] Speaker 2: but I found the media historically plays favorites. For years
[33:35] Speaker 2: they were tough on hardball, and I'd be like, guys,
[33:38] Speaker 2: he got the Super Bowl, I know how bad Stanford was.
[33:42] Speaker 2: He can coach. Take a deep breath. I think Brian
[33:45] Speaker 2: Kelly's a top twelve coach. Am I misguided? Is nobody
[33:50] Speaker 2: yet buys him in the SEC because LSU has been
[33:53] Speaker 2: when they have the right coach, they're great. I don't know,
[33:55] Speaker 2: how what do you if you had to grade him
[33:58] Speaker 2: at LSU?
[33:59] Speaker 1: Where would you be about a bus B minus to be?
[34:04] Speaker 1: I think look first off, I love BK as well,
[34:07] Speaker 1: so he's never rubbed me the wrong way. I mean,
[34:09] Speaker 1: I've gotten along great with him. I think that he
[34:12] Speaker 1: walked in there, like I told you twenty minutes ago,
[34:15] Speaker 1: and there has always been a very very unique connection culturally,
[34:20] Speaker 1: just the fabric of Louisiana and LSU football that I
[34:24] Speaker 1: don't think you can fully appreciate it unless you've been
[34:26] Speaker 1: down there for.
[34:26] Speaker 2: A long That's right, I totally agree.
[34:28] Speaker 1: And he walked in and his attitude, Frankly, I can't
[34:32] Speaker 1: blame him for having because I think I would have
[34:34] Speaker 1: been the same way if I were him, I would
[34:35] Speaker 1: have walked in and said, basically, I'm Brian Kelly. I
[34:38] Speaker 1: know what I'm doing. I know what the formula to
[34:41] Speaker 1: win is. And contrary to what you people think, the
[34:43] Speaker 1: formula to win in South Bend is the same as
[34:45] Speaker 1: it is here. Get good players, develop them by into
[34:48] Speaker 1: the process we define around here, and we'll win. And
[34:52] Speaker 1: I think he heard about Louisiana, this Louisiana that to
[34:54] Speaker 1: the point where he almost wanted to prove a point.
[34:57] Speaker 1: And when I tell you, he flushed Louisiana out of
[34:59] Speaker 1: that buil. I mean some people that it wouldn't have
[35:02] Speaker 1: mattered whether they stayed or went desk receptionist. No, you're
[35:05] Speaker 1: from thibodeau By, So he flushed that place of Louisiana. Now,
[35:09] Speaker 1: it wouldn't have mattered if they won immediately, right, they didn't,
[35:14] Speaker 1: And because they didn't, internally and culturally down there, that's
[35:18] Speaker 1: been held over his head. Now on Saturdays, they're fully
[35:21] Speaker 1: behind him, all right, In recruiting weekends, they're fully behind him.
[35:24] Speaker 1: But there are a lot of people that haven't. I
[35:25] Speaker 1: told you so attitude towards Brian Kelly his own state
[35:29] Speaker 1: because he did that well organizationally, university wise, they course
[35:35] Speaker 1: corrected collectively. I don't really think that decision was entirely
[35:38] Speaker 1: on his plate. If you get what I'm saying right,
[35:40] Speaker 1: you know, you bring Blake Baker down there as your
[35:42] Speaker 1: defensive coordinator, you bring Austin Thomas in as your GM.
[35:45] Speaker 1: These are people you cut them open and it's purple
[35:47] Speaker 1: and goal. And not only that, they're the best in
[35:50] Speaker 1: the world, some of the best in the world at
[35:51] Speaker 1: what they do. And it's no coincidence that LSU you
[35:55] Speaker 1: all of a sudden feel it, you can sense it.
[35:58] Speaker 2: You could have since their defense their defense looks like
[36:02] Speaker 2: big boy defense, like like, I mean, that was the
[36:04] Speaker 2: thing last year. They were atrocious. So to me, I
[36:08] Speaker 2: never worried about Brian's offenses, like I think he'll always
[36:11] Speaker 2: figure those that he's rough on quarterbacks. But I Lasu's
[36:14] Speaker 2: defense is like Georgia when you got the right coach.
[36:18] Speaker 2: It's just all NFL players. It's eleven guys who will
[36:22] Speaker 2: eventually plan on Sunday.
[36:24] Speaker 1: Yeah, which was shocking that you have Jaden Daniels there
[36:27] Speaker 1: a couple of years ago, and if you told me
[36:29] Speaker 1: LSU was gonna have a Heisman Trophy caliber quarterback come through,
[36:32] Speaker 1: I just blindly say national championship. Tell me who the
[36:36] Speaker 1: coach is. I mean, I'm rolling out a top twenty
[36:38] Speaker 1: five defense if my mom's the DC there as long
[36:41] Speaker 1: as you're keeping in state kids in state. So for
[36:43] Speaker 1: that to have failed them was mind boggling. It's just
[36:47] Speaker 1: like Mario not being able to stop anything last year
[36:51] Speaker 1: at Miami with Cam Moore. It's crazy. So it's funny
[36:54] Speaker 1: that we've talked about this because I feel there's a
[36:56] Speaker 1: very very closely correlated story that's been told over the
[37:01] Speaker 1: past few years in college football about Brian Kelly and
[37:04] Speaker 1: Lincoln Riley. Ironically, the whispers were initially, oh, Lincoln may
[37:07] Speaker 1: take the LSU job. Well, then he winds up at USC.
[37:10] Speaker 1: So then LSU goes and gets Brian Kelly, and they
[37:13] Speaker 1: both had the wrong defensive coordinators at the outset, and
[37:17] Speaker 1: then they both corrected and now they're both massively improved defensively.
[37:21] Speaker 1: I just feel like the story arc is headed for
[37:24] Speaker 1: a playoff matchup one day. I just feel like, get
[37:26] Speaker 1: USCLSU one day. But I do agree with you, and
[37:31] Speaker 1: it's I don't think it's something that'll really be appreciated
[37:34] Speaker 1: by them unless he wins the national championship there because
[37:37] Speaker 1: everybody else this millennium has who's been the head coach
[37:39] Speaker 1: at LSU.
[37:40] Speaker 2: Yeah, I mean listen Ed Orgeron, who's a very funny guy.
[37:44] Speaker 2: I love. Ed does not consider a schematic, you know,
[37:48] Speaker 2: kingpin of the sport. He's a recruiter. I mean for
[37:52] Speaker 2: years I thought he was more of a position coach,
[37:54] Speaker 2: like a line coach than even a coordinator. Broke his
[37:57] Speaker 2: heart when he didn't get the USC job. And I
[38:00] Speaker 2: would argue today that LSU team with Burrows the most
[38:02] Speaker 2: talented I've ever seen period end of story. So I
[38:06] Speaker 2: mean they had the hardest schedule, won every game, So
[38:10] Speaker 2: if Ed can do it, and that's not a knock
[38:12] Speaker 2: like he's I mean Ed would be the first to
[38:15] Speaker 2: admit ed Ed never scheduled a bad time. Ed Ed
[38:18] Speaker 2: was a distracted, funny, great guy. But I think Brian's
[38:23] Speaker 2: too good of a coach. The older I get, I
[38:26] Speaker 2: tend to just look at people and if I have
[38:29] Speaker 2: to hire somebody or something at the volume, hire smart people.
[38:33] Speaker 2: They'll figure it out, as my rule, and I think
[38:35] Speaker 2: Brian it took him a while. I mean it just
[38:39] Speaker 2: it took a while. He couldn't get the accent down.
[38:41] Speaker 2: But eventually I think three years in, like, I feel
[38:43] Speaker 2: like they figured it out.
[38:45] Speaker 1: Yeah, they're one of the teams I'm looking most forward
[38:48] Speaker 1: to watching here. The SEC is just going to be
[38:50] Speaker 1: a bloodbath by the end of this thing, and they're
[38:53] Speaker 1: one that you know the Clemson game goes the way
[38:55] Speaker 1: it does. I was actually glad this week he publicized
[38:59] Speaker 1: the Garrett nuss injury because it's kind of been whispered
[39:02] Speaker 1: about in the South that nus Meyer had injury leading
[39:05] Speaker 1: up to that Week one game against Clemson. Like an
[39:07] Speaker 1: abdominal thing never got publicized, and they go and win
[39:12] Speaker 1: on the road, and then they were very lackluster in
[39:15] Speaker 1: Week two against an inferior opponent, and then week three,
[39:18] Speaker 1: Lagway turns the ball over five times and LSU wins
[39:20] Speaker 1: twenty to ten, and you can clearly tell, hey, we're undefeated.
[39:23] Speaker 1: Something feels a little off offensively right Way. Quarterback's been hurt,
[39:27] Speaker 1: that's what's been off. Here's the thing, though, there are
[39:31] Speaker 1: teams with healthy quarterbacks that are one and two right
[39:33] Speaker 1: now and you're three to zero. That's the surest sign
[39:36] Speaker 1: the defense is fixed.
[39:38] Speaker 2: Yep, Josh Pate as always great stuff.
[39:41] Speaker 1: Man appreciate it.
