Colin is joined by John Middlekauff, host of “3 and Out” to break down the NFL Draft. Colin begins by arguing that GM Brett Veach of the Chiefs drafts predictably & he can’t figure out 49ers GM John Lynch, and John explains that Lynch doesn’t run the 49ers draft… head coach Kyle Shanahan does (3:00). They discuss the backlash to the Bears taking speedster Zayvian Johnson and Colin explains that if any coach picked him, it may not be a great pick…but with Ben Johnson as coach it can work (9:00). They move to the Rams & Colin argues that while their draft won’t grade well… outside of Ty Simpson, the Rams are drafting for the near term while they still have Matt Stafford and John believes Simpson wasn’t talented enough to justify the 13th pick (15:00). Colin believes the Raiders crushed the draft and Fernando Mendoza could change the trajectory of the franchise (25:00), and they discuss the impact of NIL creating less seasoned, older prospects with multiple years of high-end college football experience in the later rounds (28:30). They break down the Chiefs draft and why it made total sense for them to draft 3 defensive players with their three Top 40 picks (31:30), and Colin lauds the Cowboys for focusing on improving their defense as well by getting the steal of the draft in Caleb Downs (37:00). They debate whether Carson Beck will see the field for the Cardinals in his first season (45:00), and they each predict four teams that didn’t make the playoffs last season that will make the playoffs in 2026 (48:00). Finally, they react to the Steelers choosing Penn State quarterback Drew Allar (54:00). (Timestamps may vary based on advertisements.) [0:03] Speaker 2: Today's show is brought to you by our presenting sponsor,
[0:06] Speaker 2: American Beverage. If you think about some of the most
[0:08] Speaker 2: iconic drinks in the country, the ones you grab a barbecue,
[0:12] Speaker 2: the ones you raised to celebrate your team, that have
[0:15] Speaker 2: been part of your story for decades, Coke, Doctor Pepper, Pepsi,
[0:18] Speaker 2: there's something people don't always think about. The companies behind
[0:21] Speaker 2: those brands are still making their drinks right here in
[0:23] Speaker 2: the US. While there's a lot of talk about bringing
[0:25] Speaker 2: manufacturing back, America's beverage companies never left their American companies,
[0:29] Speaker 2: making American products with American workers in America's hometown. So
[0:32] Speaker 2: two hundred and seventy five thousand men and women across
[0:35] Speaker 2: all fifty states, real jobs, good paying jobs, the kind
[0:38] Speaker 2: of jobs you can raise a family on. So more
[0:39] Speaker 2: than one hundred years, those brands have been part of
[0:42] Speaker 2: everyday lives and they're still here, still investing, still operating
[0:45] Speaker 2: in communities around the country. So if you care about
[0:47] Speaker 2: strong old economies and companies that walk the walk, check
[0:50] Speaker 2: out the good work and what they're doing it.
[0:52] Speaker 3: We deliver for America dot Org.
[1:01] Speaker 2: All right, John Middlecoff, former NFL Scout you know him
[1:05] Speaker 2: from the volume. Let's chop it up for about forty
[1:08] Speaker 2: five minutes on the NFL Draft. I'm gonna start with
[1:13] Speaker 2: the one thing that generally like. I think when I
[1:16] Speaker 2: watch Brett Veach of Kansas City, I can see his
[1:19] Speaker 2: game plan. I know what he's trying to do. Same
[1:22] Speaker 2: with John Snyder. John Lynch, to me is a mystery.
[1:26] Speaker 2: I don't really get his draft patterns. They tend to
[1:30] Speaker 2: overdraft wide receivers, and I think what's fair to say
[1:33] Speaker 2: is that if you look at the Rams and the Seahawks' rosters,
[1:36] Speaker 2: they just have more good, young, cheap, deep athletic talent,
[1:41] Speaker 2: and I think that's because they've drafted better. I think
[1:43] Speaker 2: Lynch has had some real misses. Again, sometimes I wonder
[1:47] Speaker 2: if Kyle's pulling the levers there. I got nothing against
[1:50] Speaker 2: the wide receiver they drafted, but I struggle kind of
[1:55] Speaker 2: figuring out their draft. You follow them as closely as
[1:58] Speaker 2: any team in the NFL. You have your finger on
[2:00] Speaker 2: the pulse of what they do over the draft weekend.
[2:03] Speaker 4: Well, you brought up Veach and John Schneider. Veach runs
[2:07] Speaker 4: the draft for Andy. You know when they drafted Woods
[2:10] Speaker 4: at the end of the first round. Andy said, that's
[2:12] Speaker 4: Veach's guy, John Schneider, like Howie Roseman is in charge.
[2:17] Speaker 4: John Lynch is not Kyle is. And there is not
[2:22] Speaker 4: a coach beside McVeigh on Thursday night that looks more
[2:25] Speaker 4: miserable to be there like Kyle. This isn't a root canal.
[2:27] Speaker 4: There is the draft. This is not I don't feel
[2:30] Speaker 4: he enjoys this, and they kind of force needs right
[2:35] Speaker 4: the wide receiver. I texted a lot of people he
[2:40] Speaker 4: was the guy that was a fast riser. I think
[2:41] Speaker 4: a lot of people thought he would go around pick fifty,
[2:44] Speaker 4: not pick thirty three. The Niners don't pick until fifty eight.
[2:47] Speaker 4: They don't think he's gonna be there. The one thing
[2:51] Speaker 4: I will say, as a GM or as a coach,
[2:53] Speaker 4: you're not paid to win free agency or the draft.
[2:57] Speaker 4: You're paid to win games. And Kyle Shanahan went twelve
[2:59] Speaker 4: and five and beat Nick Seer and Howie Roseman in
[3:00] Speaker 4: the first round of the playoffs. So their greatest strength
[3:04] Speaker 4: is Kyle Shanahan, and I think sometimes their greatest weakness
[3:07] Speaker 4: in when it comes to late April in this draft
[3:10] Speaker 4: is they're not gonna pick a wide receiver that does
[3:13] Speaker 4: not block that they simply or has after the catchability.
[3:17] Speaker 4: Those are two non negotiables. So there are guys that
[3:20] Speaker 4: are viewed as higher prospects or more talented, right, but
[3:24] Speaker 4: are non negotiables for Kyle. So it's you don't even
[3:28] Speaker 4: once you get into this process and you start stacking guys.
[3:31] Speaker 4: There are players that you might like or think could
[3:34] Speaker 4: be a really good NFL player that you know, Kyle
[3:36] Speaker 4: is just not gonna mess with. And that's and he's
[3:38] Speaker 4: so he's good enough. You know, this is where you
[3:41] Speaker 4: kind of butt head sometimes, like you're not good enough
[3:43] Speaker 4: to dictate my players, Kyle kind of is this all
[3:47] Speaker 4: this specific draft? I don't have as big of an
[3:51] Speaker 4: issue with reaching in the second and third round. There
[3:53] Speaker 4: were Indiana running back Black. Every time I watch Indiana,
[3:56] Speaker 4: the guy was awesome. Now could he have gone in
[3:57] Speaker 4: the fifth? You take him at the end of the third.
[3:59] Speaker 4: It doesn't bother me as much as long as you
[4:01] Speaker 4: win games.
[4:02] Speaker 3: See.
[4:03] Speaker 2: So I do think that Shanahan in certain coaching matchups
[4:07] Speaker 2: like Nick Siani, it's he has a massive advantage. But
[4:13] Speaker 2: when you put him against McVeigh and Mike McDonald in
[4:16] Speaker 2: division and they have better rosters because they've hit on
[4:19] Speaker 2: more draft picks. That's where I think Kyle can get exposed.
[4:22] Speaker 2: That's where San Francisco at the end of the year.
[4:24] Speaker 2: That's why they have so many old, expensive players. I
[4:27] Speaker 2: mean they they would love to draft one of these
[4:30] Speaker 2: you know, young stars in the fourth round like La
[4:34] Speaker 2: does or or you know John Snyder does, and they
[4:37] Speaker 2: could move off people. So I think Kyle. Remember they've
[4:42] Speaker 2: also had losing seasons with Kyle. They haven't been as
[4:45] Speaker 2: you know, they haven't been as kind of linear or
[4:48] Speaker 2: as consistent as the Rams have. So I think, yeah, Kyle,
[4:52] Speaker 2: in a lot of matchups in this league, wins on schemes,
[4:56] Speaker 2: but it's hard to do against mcveay and Mike McDonald.
[4:58] Speaker 2: And if we're just talking into when I look at
[5:01] Speaker 2: their roster compared to the Hawks and the Rams, it
[5:04] Speaker 2: feels older, more brittle, more expensive, and there's more holes
[5:09] Speaker 2: some of.
[5:10] Speaker 4: That's the one thing is they are Last year, they
[5:13] Speaker 4: were coming off of bad year, so they had the
[5:15] Speaker 4: eleventh pick, so they were drafting high in every round.
[5:18] Speaker 4: Mikel Williams was a twenty one year old six foot five,
[5:21] Speaker 4: two hundred and eighty pound blue chip err out of
[5:23] Speaker 4: Georgia that towards ACL last year. They're really high on him.
[5:26] Speaker 4: They took Collins from Texas in the second round, who
[5:30] Speaker 4: had the game winning strip against the Rams on Thursday
[5:32] Speaker 4: Night Football that forced the fumble on the one yard
[5:34] Speaker 4: line against Kierwin Williams, who was a Robert Soahl of
[5:37] Speaker 4: favorite up in Stout, who they drafted last year was
[5:40] Speaker 4: one of the better young nickels in the entire league.
[5:42] Speaker 4: They're really high on that class where they drafted high.
[5:45] Speaker 4: This class, they're drafting at the end of the first round,
[5:47] Speaker 4: meaning they're drafting at the end of the rounds, and
[5:50] Speaker 4: they won a bunch of games last year, so they
[5:52] Speaker 4: didn't have powerful picks. I'm not as consumed with the
[5:56] Speaker 4: reaching and stuff once you get past fifty in a
[5:59] Speaker 4: draft that this is not your typical market value, you know,
[6:03] Speaker 4: because this draft was viewed as so poor. I mean,
[6:07] Speaker 4: I talk to people in the league. I know you do.
[6:09] Speaker 4: They thought it was pretty embarrassing once you got to
[6:11] Speaker 4: like the fifth round. I mean, if you would have
[6:12] Speaker 4: told everyone to go home, everyone would have been good.
[6:15] Speaker 4: I think the forty nine ers were polarizing. They're the
[6:18] Speaker 4: only team really Colin, you say they've had bad seasons.
[6:21] Speaker 4: They've had one bad season, like the last five they
[6:23] Speaker 4: went to a bunch of NFC championship games, they went
[6:25] Speaker 4: to the super Bowl, and then last year they were
[6:26] Speaker 4: in the second round and they ran out of bodies.
[6:29] Speaker 4: But if they're gonna make a run, they're very dependent
[6:31] Speaker 4: on five or six guys, and they're all Trent Williams,
[6:34] Speaker 4: Christian McCaffrey, George Kittle, Fred Warner, Nick Bosa. I mean
[6:37] Speaker 4: they went into a playoff game last year against the
[6:39] Speaker 4: super Bowl champs without Fred Warner, who's a Hall of
[6:42] Speaker 4: Fame player. Nick Bosa's now pretty is but technically their
[6:46] Speaker 4: highest paid player. McCaffrey was kind of worn down, and
[6:50] Speaker 4: Kittle tours achilles early in that game, or I guess
[6:53] Speaker 4: he tear in the Eagles game. I can't even keep
[6:55] Speaker 4: up with your injuries. You know, it's like they're not
[6:58] Speaker 4: gonna win anything. Just like if I took Seattle, if I,
[7:01] Speaker 4: if I took Witherspoon, if I if I do you
[7:04] Speaker 4: know they were missing cross. If you start taking some
[7:06] Speaker 4: of their players away, it is it is more difficult.
[7:08] Speaker 4: So I to me that they have a much longer
[7:11] Speaker 4: track record like the Jacks one great season and in
[7:14] Speaker 4: this draft, people are like, what are they doing? Yeah,
[7:16] Speaker 4: they don't. Their resume is not long enough because I know,
[7:19] Speaker 4: going into a season, I got Kyle Shanahan, I got
[7:22] Speaker 4: pretty you know if Fred Warner Georgia healthy with Trent
[7:25] Speaker 4: like I'm a double digit wine team, I'm not. I'm
[7:30] Speaker 4: not as worried, I guess as the internet is.
[7:32] Speaker 2: With their So the one team that I'll defend, I
[7:35] Speaker 2: wish they would have drafted an edge rusher higher. The
[7:38] Speaker 2: Chicago Bears went and got in the third round Zavian Thomas.
[7:41] Speaker 2: So Xavian Thomas. Even in the NFL, very few guys
[7:44] Speaker 2: run four two forties. That's just incredibly rare. That maybe
[7:47] Speaker 2: eight guys in the NFL, I'm guessing. But so he
[7:50] Speaker 2: was a not only was he a receiver lsue, he's
[7:52] Speaker 2: a very good return guy. And you know, if you're
[7:55] Speaker 2: a Bears fan, memories of Devin Hester. So people just
[7:59] Speaker 2: thought it was a terrible pick and might take his No.
[8:03] Speaker 2: Not with Ben Johnson, it's not a terrible pick. You
[8:05] Speaker 2: have to consider Mike McDonald is going to take Nick
[8:08] Speaker 2: Am and worry and he's going to be a star
[8:10] Speaker 2: as a rookie Nick am On Morey would be a
[8:13] Speaker 2: good player anywhere. He was a great player with Mike McDonald,
[8:18] Speaker 2: So coaching absolutely matters. Sean mcvays turned, you know, fifth round,
[8:23] Speaker 2: pooka fourth round, Kieran Williams, you know, tight ends from
[8:28] Speaker 2: any round.
[8:28] Speaker 3: He just makes everybody work.
[8:31] Speaker 2: It's so it's interesting Howie Roseman has this theory where
[8:35] Speaker 2: he says, if you landed every position of need, if
[8:39] Speaker 2: you solved every position of need, you probably reached, or
[8:43] Speaker 2: you probably settled, or you probably didn't consider value, Like,
[8:47] Speaker 2: you're not going to solve everything in a draft, because
[8:50] Speaker 2: you know, I think Chicago, you know, we've talked about this.
[8:54] Speaker 2: I think the Rams wanted to draft an offensive tackle
[8:57] Speaker 2: and three of them were off the board, and so
[9:00] Speaker 2: they're like, okay, plan B.
[9:02] Speaker 3: Maybe not.
[9:03] Speaker 2: But so the Chicago draft, it clearly Ben Johnson's got
[9:07] Speaker 2: incredible leverage in that building. Is that how you viewed
[9:10] Speaker 2: that draft, which was heavy offense.
[9:12] Speaker 4: Yeah, But I mean their first pick was the Oregon safeties.
[9:15] Speaker 4: Who's a plug in place?
[9:16] Speaker 3: And that was a position of need. Yeah.
[9:18] Speaker 4: And their second pick, I mean they just had a
[9:20] Speaker 4: center retire out of nowhere. I would imagine if he
[9:23] Speaker 4: hadn't retired. Are they drafting the Iowa center in the
[9:26] Speaker 4: second round. Probably not, but Iowa Kirk Farns long history.
[9:30] Speaker 4: When I see an Iowa offensive lineman go in the
[9:32] Speaker 4: first couple rounds, I go, that's a future starter. So
[9:36] Speaker 4: I judge this draft much more in the top fifty, like,
[9:40] Speaker 4: I think you can get picked. It's harder for me
[9:42] Speaker 4: in the fourth round of a draft that is literally
[9:44] Speaker 4: considered historically poor, historically poor, well, Joseph the NIL because
[9:49] Speaker 4: of the returning like Xavi and Thomas. That's like, if
[9:53] Speaker 4: you're drafting offensive players, Ben Johnson's gonna have a huge
[9:56] Speaker 4: hand in it.
[9:56] Speaker 2: Well, and I think sometimes fans you have to remember
[10:00] Speaker 2: if Ben Johnson with an offensive player is different than
[10:06] Speaker 2: Demiko Ryans. But Demiko Ryans makes everybody every defensive draft work,
[10:13] Speaker 2: every defensive draft. I'll give you an example. The NIL
[10:16] Speaker 2: has clearly hurt the later rounds, like round six and seven.
[10:20] Speaker 3: I didn't watch. I draft tracked it, but I didn't watch.
[10:23] Speaker 2: But the fifth round was interesting because I thought Kamari
[10:25] Speaker 2: Ramsey was the first player taken in the fifth round
[10:28] Speaker 2: by the Texans, and I watched, you know, every big
[10:30] Speaker 2: snap of his career. He can definitely play in the NFL.
[10:33] Speaker 2: He'll be a nice player, but he may be exceptional
[10:36] Speaker 2: because of Demiko Ryans. There was another player drafted in
[10:39] Speaker 2: that fifth round midway through named Justin Jolie, tight end
[10:42] Speaker 2: NZ State. He went to Sean Payton in Denver, and
[10:45] Speaker 2: I looked at the fifth round, watched it and not though, Okay,
[10:47] Speaker 2: those are the two guys in the fifth round. In
[10:49] Speaker 2: the fifth if I had to lay down money the
[10:53] Speaker 2: first pick of the fifth midway through it, they will
[10:55] Speaker 2: contribute pretty early. Those are the two fifth round pick
[11:00] Speaker 2: and overwhelmingly their talented. I watched both of them. It's
[11:02] Speaker 2: because of the coach. Sean Payton's gonna make tight ends work.
[11:06] Speaker 2: So that's where all defend Ben Johnson And to your point,
[11:10] Speaker 2: I look at their draft.
[11:11] Speaker 4: Looks pretty good. Colin I mean Fiaman and a lot
[11:13] Speaker 4: of people liked him. Jones, I mean Iowa offensive linemen
[11:16] Speaker 4: speak for themselves. I think Rausch was kind of the
[11:20] Speaker 4: polarising well the tight end from.
[11:22] Speaker 2: John He lets them do more thirteen personnel because they
[11:25] Speaker 2: have come Matt in Loveland. He wanted another tight end
[11:28] Speaker 2: because he McVeigh and Ben Johnson. You know that's what
[11:31] Speaker 2: The Rams led the league in three tight end stuff.
[11:33] Speaker 2: So I could see Ben doing that simply to diversify
[11:36] Speaker 2: the offense.
[11:38] Speaker 4: Yeah, Malik Muhammad, the Texas corner, was thought if he
[11:41] Speaker 4: loved played well against Ohio States, loved him to me.
[11:45] Speaker 4: The tight ends. I think more tight ends were drafted
[11:47] Speaker 4: in twenty six, the most in the league since like
[11:50] Speaker 4: two thousand and two. And that shows you all these
[11:52] Speaker 4: offensive coaches, what do we say a couple of years
[11:56] Speaker 4: ago when the running backs all hopped on a zoom
[11:58] Speaker 4: and like, we're getting screwed, we're getting factored out of
[12:00] Speaker 4: the league. Well, what's back now the running game? Because
[12:03] Speaker 4: you're using three tight ends to be more physical, some
[12:06] Speaker 4: of those guys are gonna lean in as six offensive
[12:10] Speaker 4: linemen essentially. And even if you're not a great blocker,
[12:12] Speaker 4: if you weigh two hundred and fifty pounds, if you
[12:14] Speaker 4: just put your body in front of the guys, you
[12:16] Speaker 4: gonna you're gonna be somewhat effective. And a lot of
[12:19] Speaker 4: these teams now run more of a zone running scheme.
[12:22] Speaker 4: You ever watch zone blocking, They're not shoving guys back,
[12:24] Speaker 4: they're just position blocking. So I don't know who's crushed.
[12:28] Speaker 4: I like the Bears. The Bears draft for sure. I
[12:31] Speaker 4: mean that that Texas corner when he went I'm like, god,
[12:33] Speaker 4: he's still there in the fourth round. And me he
[12:35] Speaker 4: was really productive the roush one. I just think some
[12:39] Speaker 4: of these tight ends were polarizing picks. All you know,
[12:43] Speaker 4: the rams will get into winners and losers later. You go,
[12:47] Speaker 4: do you really need a tight end? Like that's stuff
[12:50] Speaker 4: like that jumps out. But to me with the Bears
[12:52] Speaker 4: Cole Comet last year when they took Lovelin, I think
[12:56] Speaker 4: most people thought, well, is Cole Comett? Is he long
[12:58] Speaker 4: for this team? He could be the equivalent of Dj
[13:01] Speaker 4: Moore this year, like this could be his last year
[13:04] Speaker 4: on the Bears. And then you utilize him to trade yeah,
[13:06] Speaker 4: you know, get a pick and well the hair defense
[13:08] Speaker 4: or offensive linehill.
[13:09] Speaker 3: So here is something I learned from me now I
[13:11] Speaker 3: Cole Coman.
[13:12] Speaker 4: I got he's an NFL star who's going to play
[13:14] Speaker 4: in the league for twelve years.
[13:15] Speaker 3: You no, I know, Cole. I love Cole. So here's
[13:19] Speaker 3: what I think.
[13:20] Speaker 2: The really good teams also draft. They see the problem
[13:26] Speaker 2: before it exists. In a great example, so Tyler Higbee
[13:31] Speaker 2: is a tight end for the Rams who gets banged
[13:32] Speaker 2: up a lot, and he's now getting more expensive. So
[13:35] Speaker 2: I looked at the Rams taking the Ohio State tight end, thinking, well,
[13:39] Speaker 2: they got Tarren Ferguson, they love Colby Parkinson, they have
[13:42] Speaker 2: Davis Allen at Clemson. Higgby's the one guy that's expensive
[13:46] Speaker 2: and struggles to stay on the field. And with Matt
[13:49] Speaker 2: Stafford getting a new contract, they're looking to shave. If
[13:53] Speaker 2: you can't stay on the field for seventeen weeks, they're
[13:56] Speaker 2: gonna move off you because they're trying to find ways.
[13:59] Speaker 2: I mean, that's with Trent McDuffie's salary, Stafford's now going
[14:03] Speaker 2: to get a deal. My take, John was that tight
[14:06] Speaker 2: end draft was another weapon, and this kid's more of
[14:10] Speaker 2: a pass catcher than a blocker.
[14:11] Speaker 3: He is classic.
[14:13] Speaker 2: You know, he's a great Sean McVay tight end. The
[14:16] Speaker 2: kid from Myles State, he's a Sean McVay tight end.
[14:18] Speaker 2: He's gonna get up the field. But some of this
[14:20] Speaker 2: now is like they went and got another offensive tackle.
[14:24] Speaker 2: And by the way that you noticed the Rams offensive
[14:26] Speaker 2: tackle was like twenty five years old. They don't care
[14:28] Speaker 2: if his ceilings high. They want him to be able
[14:31] Speaker 2: to play now and next year and the following year
[14:34] Speaker 2: to protect Matt Stafford. So I looked at the Rams
[14:37] Speaker 2: draft saving a little money for Stafford's contract, protecting Stafford,
[14:42] Speaker 2: and then getting Stafford's backup. He's thirty eight years old.
[14:45] Speaker 2: It's not going to grade well. But they they're favored
[14:49] Speaker 2: doing the Super Bowl. They're more in protect one. One
[14:52] Speaker 2: pick has helped Matt, the other is Matt's backup. The
[14:55] Speaker 2: other is protect Matt Stafford. That's what the draft felt
[14:58] Speaker 2: like for me.
[14:59] Speaker 4: I think we have to agree though the I mean,
[15:01] Speaker 4: the most polarizing pick of the draft by a mile
[15:04] Speaker 4: was Ty Simpson. Yes, and rightfully so. But who I
[15:09] Speaker 4: don't know. Did you see the clip of John Lynch
[15:11] Speaker 4: on Thursday night when he was asked about it. He
[15:14] Speaker 4: was so he was like overjoyed because imagine it. It's like, well,
[15:17] Speaker 4: they don't need pass rushers. What if I told you
[15:19] Speaker 4: they drafted ruben Bain to rotate with that unit, You'd
[15:22] Speaker 4: be like, holy shit. Ask John Schneider, I would imagine,
[15:26] Speaker 4: would you rather have them got the guard from Penn
[15:29] Speaker 4: State ruben Bain or what they did? They would have
[15:32] Speaker 4: definitely signed up for that and I think my biggest
[15:34] Speaker 4: issue with the whole thing is I hear a lot
[15:37] Speaker 4: about the Packers, right, the Packers have been doing this forever.
[15:41] Speaker 4: Would they have drafted Aaron Rodgers if they were picking
[15:44] Speaker 4: thirteen that year instead of twenty four? I doubt it. Yeah,
[15:47] Speaker 4: they didn't draft Jordan Love at pick thirteen. They took
[15:49] Speaker 4: him twenty seven. And both those guys, I mean, Aaron
[15:52] Speaker 4: Rodgers probably has the greatest combination I don't quite remember
[15:57] Speaker 4: peak l Way besides, like the Netflix documentary, but of athleticism,
[16:01] Speaker 4: arm strength, and accuracy that I've ever seen. And Jordan Love.
[16:05] Speaker 4: You know, he's a people argue over him, but he
[16:07] Speaker 4: clearly is a trait based, big arm guy can move
[16:11] Speaker 4: a little bit. That is not the case here. And
[16:13] Speaker 4: even besides, you know, McVeigh sold it pretty good the
[16:16] Speaker 4: next day about like I was in a bad mood
[16:18] Speaker 4: over something else. He's got a massage that he just saw.
[16:22] Speaker 4: He knows the floors what they went through with Rogers.
[16:26] Speaker 4: Even though Matt's probably less prickly, it's still we're all
[16:29] Speaker 4: human beings. Yeah, you just you just you just want
[16:32] Speaker 4: me to mentor this guy, I just don't think he
[16:35] Speaker 4: was talented enough to pick in that spot is my entire.
[16:38] Speaker 2: I think some people disc I didn't think he was
[16:41] Speaker 2: a first round pick. I didn't think Jackson Dart was, though,
[16:43] Speaker 2: so I have to settle down. I thought Jackson was
[16:46] Speaker 2: more to Jackson Dart went.
[16:47] Speaker 4: In the mid twenties. Like there was a big difference
[16:50] Speaker 4: in a first round, in a good first round, thirteen
[16:53] Speaker 4: and twenty four, twenty five in a bad first round.
[16:56] Speaker 4: I mean that there were multiple elite You know, Reuben
[16:59] Speaker 4: Bain and the Penn's offensive guard are viewed as guys
[17:02] Speaker 4: that can be pro bowlers, right. I would imagine maybe
[17:05] Speaker 4: they won't be, but I would say universally if you
[17:07] Speaker 4: just pulled people around the league, those guys upside as
[17:10] Speaker 4: a player is to be a high end player. It's like, well,
[17:12] Speaker 4: he could be like a version of brock Purty. Well,
[17:15] Speaker 4: part what Charlie you know, Charlie Munger you know? And
[17:17] Speaker 4: the financial people always say that part of hitting big
[17:23] Speaker 4: is to take advantage of the downturns. Right, the fortunes
[17:26] Speaker 4: are made in the downturns and collected in the upturns.
[17:28] Speaker 4: Part of brock Purty is they paid nothing for him.
[17:31] Speaker 4: Russell Wilson or Dak Prescott. They paid this guy went
[17:36] Speaker 4: three spots later than Patrick Mahomes went. So it's like
[17:40] Speaker 4: they paid a premium for a guy who's viewed as
[17:43] Speaker 4: an upside that is never going to be a premium.
[17:45] Speaker 4: And that's that's the argument. And then and then let's
[17:49] Speaker 4: I mean, they had to walk it back the reaction.
[17:53] Speaker 4: We're all human beings, we're seeing it. We're like, God,
[17:55] Speaker 4: is this is a little weird. And I don't even
[17:56] Speaker 4: blame less because there's always a balance of thinking big picture.
[18:01] Speaker 4: But Stafford, wouldn't you say that Stafford Rogers did this
[18:06] Speaker 4: like right when Laflora got there, kind of mastered the position.
[18:09] Speaker 3: Like his his high school.
[18:10] Speaker 4: Gifts aren't quite as great, but now his head is
[18:12] Speaker 4: the equivalent of Manning and Brady. Why would you part
[18:15] Speaker 4: of the reason Brady tapped out he was forty five,
[18:18] Speaker 4: he was tired of getting hit Peyton. Manning's arm stopped working,
[18:20] Speaker 4: Drew Brees's shoulder stopped working. Those guys would not have
[18:23] Speaker 4: quit if they were still playing. Like Matt Stafford's this notion,
[18:26] Speaker 4: Matt Stafford's what job pays you forty five to fifty
[18:29] Speaker 4: million dollars in America, not many so I and especially
[18:32] Speaker 4: if you're succeeding at I don't think Stafford necessarily is
[18:35] Speaker 4: going anywhere. If you can stay healthy.
[18:37] Speaker 2: No, if he says healthy, the hook play at least

[20:05] Speaker 2: Gambling problem called one eight hundred Gambler Arizona, Colorado, Illinois,
[20:08] Speaker 2: New Jersey, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia. Listen to Jets Cleveland, Miami
[20:17] Speaker 2: and the Raiders. Obviously they're bad teams, so they can
[20:20] Speaker 2: get six starters. I thought Cleveland's first five picks will
[20:23] Speaker 2: all start. I thought I thought Andrew Berry. You know
[20:26] Speaker 2: it's I like Stefanski. I like Andrew Berry. I don't
[20:29] Speaker 2: like the owner. I think he's impulsive. I think he
[20:31] Speaker 2: screwed him on Johnny Manziel and Deshaun Watson. But I'll
[20:35] Speaker 2: tell you I thought, if I had to say, what
[20:38] Speaker 2: draft could pop, what team could you look at in
[20:43] Speaker 2: two years and go, holy shit, look at that draft?
[20:46] Speaker 3: I think it's the Raiders.
[20:48] Speaker 2: First of all, Fernando Mendoza is going to change the
[20:52] Speaker 2: trajectory of the franchise. They go take Stukes, the safety
[20:57] Speaker 2: from Arizona, who's in effing baller.
[21:01] Speaker 3: He is a like violent safety.
[21:05] Speaker 2: Now he's had an injury, he can do slot, corner, safety,
[21:10] Speaker 2: trading sis. He's a first day starter. They have a
[21:14] Speaker 2: safety first day starter. Then they get McCoy from Tennessee, who,
[21:19] Speaker 2: if he stays healthy, is the steel of the draft.
[21:22] Speaker 2: They also get Mike Washington, who I watch enough college football,
[21:26] Speaker 2: in the fourth round. Is not a good running back
[21:28] Speaker 2: draft and he's not a juke make you miss guy.
[21:31] Speaker 2: But if you told me the second or third best
[21:33] Speaker 2: running back in this draft went to the Raiders, he'll
[21:37] Speaker 2: be He'll be the opposite of Ashton genty, big physical,
[21:41] Speaker 2: straight line runner, not gonna make people miss. I thought
[21:45] Speaker 2: the Raiders crushed. I think between Mendoza, between those two
[21:49] Speaker 2: defensive backs. Again, if they stay healthy, they're huge talents.
[21:55] Speaker 2: I think Washington out of Arkansas. I like he may
[21:58] Speaker 2: be the second best back in the draft. He'll be
[22:00] Speaker 2: after Gent. He's the off speed pitch, just a big, physical,
[22:04] Speaker 2: fine hole, goes straight downhill. I think spy Tech John
[22:09] Speaker 2: spy Tech the GM of the Raiders.
[22:11] Speaker 3: John.
[22:13] Speaker 2: I thought he did about as well as you can
[22:15] Speaker 2: do because they're unlike Cleveland or maybe the Jets. They
[22:19] Speaker 2: don't have a million holes. They've got a tight end,
[22:21] Speaker 2: They've got a back after the first pick. They have
[22:24] Speaker 2: a quarterback, they have a left tackle, they have some pieces.
[22:28] Speaker 2: I like they have a center, Linderbaum. They have the
[22:30] Speaker 2: kid from Oregon. I think it's Jpp the guard.
[22:33] Speaker 3: They have some piece. Yeah, they're not bereft of talent.
[22:39] Speaker 3: I thought the Raiders draft was amazing.
[22:41] Speaker 4: Why. I think one thing we learned in the Joe
[22:44] Speaker 4: Douglas Sola era is they drafted all these good players
[22:48] Speaker 4: and they never had a quarterback, and it was a nightmare.
[22:51] Speaker 4: And if you look at Cleveland and the Jets. Really
[22:54] Speaker 4: the last Cleveland's draft last year was excellent. Yeah, their
[22:57] Speaker 4: draft this year on paper looks excellent. The Jets now
[23:00] Speaker 4: part of it. Bill Simmons made a good point. He's like,
[23:04] Speaker 4: they're drafting all these good players because they traded good
[23:06] Speaker 4: players to get these first round picks. They don't have
[23:09] Speaker 4: three first round picks out of thin air. But the
[23:12] Speaker 4: Raiders got the most important guy in the draft. For
[23:15] Speaker 4: all these teams that don't have quarterbacks, So even if
[23:17] Speaker 4: they still do have some holes, and they just look
[23:20] Speaker 4: at all the guys they signed in free agency, the
[23:22] Speaker 4: majority of them were on defense, and then Crosby because
[23:25] Speaker 4: of the Box trade comes back. I mean Crosby last
[23:28] Speaker 4: year was good. That was the reason. At the end
[23:30] Speaker 4: of the year, they're like, stay away Max. They pulled
[23:32] Speaker 4: an NBA thing because he almost won the Houston Texans
[23:36] Speaker 4: game late in the season by himself. I texted a
[23:38] Speaker 4: buddy on the Texans staff, He's like, I don't know
[23:39] Speaker 4: if I ever seen a guy play that hard. So
[23:42] Speaker 4: I think the whole key and this is gonna be
[23:44] Speaker 4: the conversation next year with all these quarterbacks. If Mendoza
[23:48] Speaker 4: does become Matt Ryan or Jared Goff the Raider. I mean,
[23:52] Speaker 4: look at what they became somewhat of a stable franchise
[23:54] Speaker 4: with Derek Carr, who was a second round guy. And
[23:58] Speaker 4: so if Mendoza becomes for Matt Ryan, this becomes a
[24:02] Speaker 4: real franchise. Like to me the rest of the draft, Like,
[24:06] Speaker 4: I'm with you on the Stukes kid, he's like six
[24:08] Speaker 4: year walk on. A lot of these guys, you go
[24:11] Speaker 4: to their bio, they'd either been at seven different schools
[24:14] Speaker 4: or they came into school in twenty twenty, like this
[24:16] Speaker 4: was John twenty six.
[24:18] Speaker 2: You know, it's interesting about these older players because the
[24:20] Speaker 2: nil so they stay in college. Some of these guys
[24:23] Speaker 2: take pay cups going to the pros. The downside is
[24:26] Speaker 2: they're not going to be around as long the NFL
[24:28] Speaker 2: guys are like, these guys are beat up. They played
[24:29] Speaker 2: five years college football. The upside is, John, they're ready
[24:32] Speaker 2: to play. When I watched it ready when I watched
[24:35] Speaker 2: the Hoosiers and Hurricanes play in the National Championship, the
[24:38] Speaker 2: offensive game plan by Indiana was it felt almost like
[24:42] Speaker 2: fifty percent pro game plan, multiple sets, motions everywhere. Football
[24:46] Speaker 2: didn't look like that in the seventies eighties, nineties and
[24:48] Speaker 2: I watched Miami's defense. It was split zone, man to man,
[24:51] Speaker 2: nine NFL guys. The quality of college basketball and football,
[24:56] Speaker 2: there's twenty four year olds all over the field.
[24:58] Speaker 3: You can feed him more. Now.
[24:59] Speaker 2: The downside, they come to the NFL older and beat up.
[25:02] Speaker 2: But like the Raiders went and got guys. I mean,
[25:04] Speaker 2: the Rams drafted an offensive tackle. It's like twenty five.
[25:08] Speaker 2: And my take is he has to protect Matt Stafford
[25:11] Speaker 2: this year. They don't care if he plays for thirteen years.
[25:14] Speaker 2: If they got six, they would live with it.
[25:17] Speaker 4: I saw McVeigh joke that the kid had been in
[25:19] Speaker 4: seventeen different schools, and I mean he was kind of joking,
[25:21] Speaker 4: kind of serious because some of these guys, I mean,
[25:23] Speaker 4: the guy the Niners took stribbling at Ole Miss. He
[25:27] Speaker 4: started at Washington State, then went to Oklahoma State and
[25:29] Speaker 4: went to Lane kiffn Yes. I was telling someone this week,
[25:32] Speaker 4: and I can't even imagine, as someone that just attended
[25:35] Speaker 4: one college, how could you keep up with that many
[25:38] Speaker 4: human beings in your life? And I am I and
[25:41] Speaker 4: I get the money's huge for a lot of these guys.
[25:44] Speaker 4: It's you know, it's it's a big move. I know
[25:46] Speaker 4: some people in California that now go to school in
[25:48] Speaker 4: the SEC. It's hard to just you gotta have some
[25:51] Speaker 4: self confidences to pick up and move and meet start over.
[25:54] Speaker 2: Uh.
[25:54] Speaker 4: But back to the Mendoza thing, to me, he's the
[25:58] Speaker 4: whole key to the franchise. If he becomes a top
[26:01] Speaker 4: ten quarterback, they are just off and running. We saw
[26:05] Speaker 4: the Bucks for years with Jason light They clearly had
[26:07] Speaker 4: a bunch of good players on the team, but they
[26:09] Speaker 4: had no quarterback. That's kind of the league. And that's
[26:12] Speaker 4: the thing with the Jets. Honestly, they might be too good.
[26:16] Speaker 4: Now now they're gonna have three picks. You can win
[26:19] Speaker 4: five six games and be drafting tenth. You know, look
[26:23] Speaker 4: at the Chiefs. They had a awful They were drafting ninth.
[26:26] Speaker 4: So in a world where they're just a bad team
[26:28] Speaker 4: with no Patrick Mahomes, they would have been shit out
[26:31] Speaker 4: of luck this year. And we all think and all
[26:34] Speaker 4: these quarterbacks are coming next year. You just never with nil,
[26:38] Speaker 4: I'm never confident in saying year to year what a
[26:40] Speaker 4: draft's gonna look like.
[26:41] Speaker 2: Yep, anymore, you know, John Kansas City, So I thought
[26:46] Speaker 2: the Raiders kind of won the draft. Plus my theory
[26:49] Speaker 2: has always been when I do my Monday show after
[26:51] Speaker 2: the draft, I always take your top two to three
[26:54] Speaker 2: free agent picks in your top three college picks. I
[26:57] Speaker 2: have no idea whose fifth round pick is good. I
[27:00] Speaker 2: thought the Raiders and the Chiefs were great. I thought
[27:03] Speaker 2: Brett Veach. I mean, sometimes you get lucky. So they
[27:06] Speaker 2: needed a running back, they needed a corner, a defensive
[27:10] Speaker 2: tackle on an edge. They got all of them, and
[27:12] Speaker 2: there's an argument they got the best corner, the best
[27:15] Speaker 2: defensive tackle, and then the best free agent running back.
[27:18] Speaker 2: Now they didn't get early a right tackle. So my
[27:23] Speaker 2: take is like the Bears were their defensive ends and
[27:26] Speaker 2: their rush ends. The Bears Ben Johnson said, we have
[27:28] Speaker 2: to coach better. We have some guys in house we like.
[27:31] Speaker 3: They're young.
[27:32] Speaker 2: Kansas City, my take is they liked Jalen Moore because
[27:37] Speaker 2: they went and got the Niner backup behind Trent Williams.
[27:39] Speaker 2: And my take is sometimes we don't know in house
[27:42] Speaker 2: what a team likes, so Kansas City is like, no,
[27:44] Speaker 2: we're good with him.
[27:46] Speaker 3: We need to go running back.
[27:47] Speaker 2: Cornerback Chris Jones had an off year defensive tackle. By
[27:52] Speaker 2: the way, that Clemson guy six months ago, people thought
[27:55] Speaker 2: he was a top ten pick.
[27:57] Speaker 4: Top five. I mean, if he would be one of
[27:59] Speaker 4: the best defensive players in the country.
[28:01] Speaker 2: So I look at the Kansas City Chiefs and I thought,
[28:04] Speaker 2: running back, corner, defensive tackle, edge. If they like Jalen
[28:07] Speaker 2: Moore at right tackle, they're back to me in the
[28:09] Speaker 2: Super Bowl bubble.
[28:11] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean, the corner is viewed as easily one
[28:14] Speaker 4: of the best players in this draft. I mean just
[28:16] Speaker 4: plug and play outside corner. And you and I talked
[28:19] Speaker 4: about this on Thursday. Financially, there was a huge swing
[28:23] Speaker 4: between him and McDuffie. His comps kind of McDuffie, well,
[28:26] Speaker 4: one guy's making five six million, the other guy's making
[28:29] Speaker 4: thirty million dollars a year, so they had to make
[28:30] Speaker 4: a financial decision.
[28:32] Speaker 3: Yeah.
[28:32] Speaker 4: The other thing is a double whaemy with their two
[28:34] Speaker 4: defensive linemen, because our Mason Thomas from Oklahoma, Oklahoma was
[28:38] Speaker 4: arguably the best defense in the country.
[28:39] Speaker 3: No, dude, that dude.
[28:40] Speaker 2: I had a GM text me and he said, Hey,
[28:43] Speaker 2: your buddy Veach just got a starter.
[28:46] Speaker 3: He's like, that guy's a stud.
[28:48] Speaker 4: So they got and Peter Woods, who I think a
[28:51] Speaker 4: lot of people think underachieved. I'd argue the program underachieved,
[28:55] Speaker 4: and I think most guys doing this A long time
[28:57] Speaker 4: ago is I remember talking to Peter's to Washington GM
[29:01] Speaker 4: about who Funga and he said, most times, when you
[29:04] Speaker 4: this is at the time when USC was in shambles,
[29:06] Speaker 4: and if you went into the program when a program
[29:09] Speaker 4: is losing games, and especially a Marque program, everyone kind
[29:12] Speaker 4: of points the finger and everything's negative and most players
[29:16] Speaker 4: are not able to rise above it. He's like, who
[29:18] Speaker 4: Funka did? You couldn't get anyone in the bad It's rare,
[29:20] Speaker 4: like Caleb Downs, if he was on a program that
[29:23] Speaker 4: was awful, you wouldn't find anyone that would say negative
[29:25] Speaker 4: things about it. But most guys are, and I don't
[29:28] Speaker 4: mean this in a negative are followers. Most young people are.
[29:31] Speaker 4: So when you get him in a program, Clemson wasn't
[29:33] Speaker 4: shambles this year. So all these guys look at every
[29:36] Speaker 4: time I looked up third round fit, another Clemson guy,
[29:39] Speaker 4: Another Clemson guy, How did this team win seven games
[29:41] Speaker 4: in the ACC? They should have been total because talent wise,
[29:45] Speaker 4: I bet a lot of NFL people would say, if
[29:48] Speaker 4: they just reach their potential, they should have been there
[29:50] Speaker 4: right there with Miami now club Nick was bad. That
[29:52] Speaker 4: was a huge part of it. But Peter Woods, like,
[29:55] Speaker 4: you get him with Chris Jones, it's a double whimmy.
[29:59] Speaker 4: He gets to walk watch a Hall of Famer and
[30:01] Speaker 4: it kind of motivates the Hall of Famer. Yeah, and
[30:03] Speaker 4: then our Mason Thomas is not really needs much motivation,
[30:08] Speaker 4: So you get these two guys to go with Chris Jones,
[30:11] Speaker 4: with Mason, they get a lot of juice and energy
[30:14] Speaker 4: coming from their defense. And this is where good offensive
[30:18] Speaker 4: coaches like they easily could have pulled the trigger on
[30:22] Speaker 4: an offensive lineman with their high pick and is the
[30:25] Speaker 4: court is the play caller, right, And they just went
[30:28] Speaker 4: their three first picks that were what uh two in
[30:32] Speaker 4: the first round. Obviously one was like forty So you
[30:34] Speaker 4: had three picks in the top forty one in the
[30:36] Speaker 4: top tip all defense. And it doesn't even feel like
[30:39] Speaker 4: they hesitated making those moves. So but that's where you know,
[30:43] Speaker 4: coach read for how many coaches in this modern day
[30:46] Speaker 4: football that are in their mid sixties, who's just an
[30:49] Speaker 4: absolute legend would just be like Beach gets to run it,
[30:53] Speaker 4: you know, And that's that that you know, Pete was
[30:56] Speaker 4: a push and pull with that obviously Belichick wouldn't listen
[30:58] Speaker 4: to a soul. You know, that's a power in Kansas
[31:01] Speaker 4: City that their coach is not this ego maniac when
[31:05] Speaker 4: it comes to personnel acquisition. Because personnel people that they
[31:08] Speaker 4: spend twelve months a year doing this, You just spend
[31:12] Speaker 4: like two months a year doing this.
[31:14] Speaker 2: Well, there's two teams that I thought did well, but
[31:16] Speaker 2: it wasn't as sexy. The Chargers, for their eight picks
[31:19] Speaker 2: were offensive linemen. I love that they just attacked the
[31:22] Speaker 2: big weakness. The Cowboys five of their seven picks were
[31:25] Speaker 2: defensive players. They went and got three edges. And it's
[31:28] Speaker 2: really interesting Cleveland did this where Cleveland picked two receivers,
[31:32] Speaker 2: three offensive linemen, two tight ends in a week draft.
[31:36] Speaker 2: The Cleveland's just like, we're just going to fix our
[31:38] Speaker 2: offense for the next quarterback that comes into this place
[31:41] Speaker 2: that's not named Schitar Sanders. You know, the Chargers are like,
[31:44] Speaker 2: it's not a great draft, but we're going to just
[31:46] Speaker 2: give Justin Herbert. We're going to get the edge. Okay,
[31:49] Speaker 2: We're going to go get an edge that was our
[31:51] Speaker 2: number one need. Then we're just gonna go offensive line.
[31:55] Speaker 2: And I think, you know, the Cowboys were interesting. There
[31:58] Speaker 2: was part of me during the draft that thought they're
[32:02] Speaker 2: almost drafting to prove a point because they got so
[32:05] Speaker 2: much criticism for Micah Parsons. It's almost like they're drafting.
[32:09] Speaker 2: You watch our pass rush this year, we're going to
[32:11] Speaker 2: be just good. I mean they went their second pick.
[32:14] Speaker 3: In the first round.
[32:15] Speaker 2: I mean, let's be honest about it. He's not gonna
[32:17] Speaker 2: he won't play that many snaps this year. Like he's
[32:20] Speaker 2: a second round pick. Everybody in the league knows.
[32:22] Speaker 3: Nick Saban got caught in hot Mike Nick was right,
[32:24] Speaker 3: he's a second round pick. But I will defend it.
[32:26] Speaker 3: When you have overshown rasa Gary, you went and got
[32:31] Speaker 3: another Woundiams, Quinton Williams, Kenny Clark on interior. But to me,
[32:35] Speaker 3: after the Caleb Downs pick, you just do whatever whatever
[32:39] Speaker 3: you want because you found your center fielder. So Dallas,
[32:41] Speaker 3: Chargers Cleveland just went one side of the ball. And
[32:44] Speaker 3: I think in a week draft and you're just like, guys,
[32:47] Speaker 3: we have to solve a primary issue. I thought, Dallas,
[32:52] Speaker 3: I'm gonna defend Dallas after that first I think the
[32:55] Speaker 3: steal of the draft was Caleb Downs. I thought that
[32:58] Speaker 3: was the steal of the draft.
[33:00] Speaker 4: There's last night, I was going around watching some of
[33:03] Speaker 4: the different press conferences that there is not a press
[33:05] Speaker 4: conference in the league around draft time that looks remotely
[33:08] Speaker 4: close to the Cowboys because they got four people up
[33:12] Speaker 4: there on the dais and Jerry, even if it's not
[33:15] Speaker 4: his question, he's chiming in when the other guy ends it.
[33:18] Speaker 4: But he does make some good points, and one of
[33:22] Speaker 4: them simply was because he's very candid, he's very transparent
[33:25] Speaker 4: with his thoughts. He said, we got very lucky. They
[33:28] Speaker 4: got many considered, if not the best player, one of
[33:31] Speaker 4: the top two or three players in this draft, that
[33:33] Speaker 4: pick eleven. You know, there weren't many people when the
[33:35] Speaker 4: draft started that that Caleb Downs wouldn't go in the
[33:38] Speaker 4: top piece.
[33:39] Speaker 3: I mean stational, he'll be a pro bowler, what year, two, three?
[33:43] Speaker 4: Yeah, I mean he could be an immediate pro bowler.
[33:46] Speaker 4: And the other point Jerry had is, obviously, we were
[33:50] Speaker 4: terrible on defense last year. We couldn't even get lined up.
[33:54] Speaker 4: And the one thing this guy does, like John Stockton
[33:57] Speaker 4: or Chris Paul, he's gonna run point guard back there
[34:00] Speaker 4: until everyone what to do. Immediately. I watched some of
[34:03] Speaker 4: his press conference. He starts immediately thanking his family. His
[34:07] Speaker 4: sister's in medical school. So it's like you're getting this
[34:10] Speaker 4: blue chip athlete who comes who clearly comes from an
[34:14] Speaker 4: academic family. Like, no wonder, everyone loves this guy. He's brilliant,
[34:19] Speaker 4: but he's a great player at a position that is
[34:22] Speaker 4: very cerebral. But you also have to have the athletic ability.
[34:26] Speaker 4: I just think the Cowboys, you're just not gonna see
[34:29] Speaker 4: very often. Part of it is placed safety, but they
[34:32] Speaker 4: there's no way when the draft started in a million
[34:34] Speaker 4: years that Caleb Downs would have been on their team
[34:37] Speaker 4: if they only had to trade up one spot. If
[34:39] Speaker 4: you say, hey, the Cowboys got Caleb Downs and be like, oh,
[34:41] Speaker 4: they probably went up to six, you know, or made
[34:44] Speaker 4: a big move so you get that guy. And I
[34:48] Speaker 4: knew a lot of people the UCF defensive lineman was
[34:52] Speaker 4: a guy rising the ranks because physically he met a
[34:55] Speaker 4: lot of the requirements and you put him around a
[34:58] Speaker 4: lot of other you know, they have so many defensive linemen.
[35:01] Speaker 4: Now I'm high on the Cowboys this year. I think
[35:05] Speaker 4: he easily could be a playoff team. If you tell
[35:07] Speaker 4: me Dak play seventeen games. They got a lot John
[35:10] Speaker 4: reinforcements and if Caleb Downs is immediately like rookie of
[35:13] Speaker 4: the Year type guy, to me, they're a ten to
[35:16] Speaker 4: eleven win team.
[35:17] Speaker 2: John the other day on the air on the Herd
[35:19] Speaker 2: on FS one I put, I said, the Cowboys actually
[35:22] Speaker 2: have better high end talent, but they don't have is depth,
[35:26] Speaker 2: Like they don't have anybody anybody behind Jake Ferguson. There's
[35:29] Speaker 2: only two tight ends in the NFL that had eighty
[35:31] Speaker 2: catches and like six touchdowns. Jake Ferguson was one of them.
[35:34] Speaker 2: I put him as their tenth best player, like Dallas
[35:37] Speaker 2: has I didn't even put over shown in their top
[35:40] Speaker 2: ten because he's not available enough. They have really good players,
[35:43] Speaker 2: but they just added the steal of the draft and
[35:47] Speaker 2: multiple edge rushers. So you know, I thought one of
[35:50] Speaker 2: the surprise portions of last season was Brian Schottenheimer. I
[35:55] Speaker 2: mean that literally. He was not on anybody's board to
[35:57] Speaker 2: hire as an OC the Cowboys, even the head coaching job.
[36:01] Speaker 2: John I thought he had. I mean, my bad, I
[36:04] Speaker 2: thought he was pretty competent.
[36:06] Speaker 4: Well, if you just look at that division right Washington,
[36:08] Speaker 4: his new coordinators, their head coach does not call plays Sirianni.
[36:13] Speaker 4: He doesn't have an easy job because they got a
[36:15] Speaker 4: lot of personalities. But he can not call place. And
[36:18] Speaker 4: the Giants head coach is a CEO. I mean, say
[36:20] Speaker 4: what you want about Shot Nimer. He can just call
[36:23] Speaker 4: an offense, right. I mean, I guess it was a
[36:26] Speaker 4: long time ago now, but when he was with the Jets,
[36:28] Speaker 4: he was a very hot names. He's a good offensive
[36:31] Speaker 4: play caller. So I'm high on the and the Chargers.
[36:35] Speaker 4: We talked about on Thursday night. Messador. If he was
[36:38] Speaker 4: a couple of years younger, I think he might have
[36:40] Speaker 4: gone in the top like fifteen. So that's that's an
[36:43] Speaker 4: excellent thing. He put him with Khalil Mack, Derwin James.
[36:47] Speaker 4: I saw the goat kind of viral of Mike McDaniel,
[36:52] Speaker 4: you know, pounding the table for the Mississippi state wide receiver.
[36:55] Speaker 4: They already have Trey Harris. You know they drafted the
[36:58] Speaker 4: UNC running back last year. You get the two tackles back.
[37:01] Speaker 4: I think there's gonna be a lot of pressure on
[37:03] Speaker 4: Harbonn Herbert to be And this is the AFC in general,
[37:07] Speaker 4: like the Bengals. If you tell me their first round pick,
[37:09] Speaker 4: Dexter Lawrence second round pick, cash Is Howell. I watched
[37:11] Speaker 4: a lot of A and M. Their offense was very
[37:14] Speaker 4: hit or missed, but that defense was and he felt
[37:16] Speaker 4: like he was Von Miller, so you put him. Last
[37:19] Speaker 4: year they took Shamar Stewart, who cash Is Howell's you
[37:22] Speaker 4: know text A and M guy. They added Mafe from Seattle, like,
[37:26] Speaker 4: they have some reinforcements on defense as well. If Joe
[37:29] Speaker 4: Burrow plays seventeen games, yeah, they're one my pick to
[37:33] Speaker 4: win that division. Yeah right now because the defense should
[37:35] Speaker 4: be dramatically improved in Their offense could be a top
[37:38] Speaker 4: three or four offense.
[37:39] Speaker 3: In the league. Yeah.
[37:40] Speaker 4: The you know, it's AFC stacked.
[37:45] Speaker 2: Jesus, it is absolutely still. You know it's here in Chicago.
[37:50] Speaker 2: People are like, what did you think of our draft?
[37:52] Speaker 2: And I'm like, listen, you're a really good team. And
[37:55] Speaker 2: I'm sometimes I'm like, I just trust if you go
[37:58] Speaker 2: heavy offense, I trust Ben Jonson And I've said this
[38:00] Speaker 2: for years. Just McVeigh is going to take fourth rounders
[38:03] Speaker 2: and make him play like second rounders.
[38:05] Speaker 3: So I trust you.
[38:15] Speaker 2: You know, one of the players drafted, I'm not a
[38:18] Speaker 2: big Carson Beck guy. I think he's a really good
[38:20] Speaker 2: college player. I don't think he's an NFL quarterback. Arizona
[38:23] Speaker 2: picked him. I didn't love Arizona's draft. I mean, Miami
[38:27] Speaker 2: had so many picks. I think it'll be a good draft.
[38:29] Speaker 2: I just I don't know about a couple of their picks.
[38:32] Speaker 2: I thought Caleb Douglass to me, was overdrafted. Caden Proctor
[38:35] Speaker 2: was overdrafted. But they have so many picks that Miami
[38:38] Speaker 2: probably found five six starters. They went heavy tight end,
[38:42] Speaker 2: wide receiver, offensive line. Like, I totally get it. What
[38:46] Speaker 2: do you think, I mean, because you live in Arizona.
[38:50] Speaker 2: Arizona's got some really good offensive pieces. Is Carson Beck
[38:55] Speaker 2: gonna play for them?
[38:56] Speaker 3: You think?
[38:58] Speaker 4: Well, Jacobe was good to at the end of the season,
[39:01] Speaker 4: and he's currently holding out because he wants his contract guaranteed.
[39:06] Speaker 4: Minshew was a fun story years ago. I mean anymore, No,
[39:10] Speaker 4: and not on a bad team. So it wouldn't shock
[39:15] Speaker 4: me if Carson Beck's gonna play half this season for sure. Now,
[39:19] Speaker 4: there was a report I think Breer put in about
[39:21] Speaker 4: the loner comment. Obviously, this stuff in Georgia got weird.
[39:25] Speaker 4: I did think he played pretty well down the stretch
[39:28] Speaker 4: for Miami and he's really more of a game manager,
[39:32] Speaker 4: like that's kind of his game. And in the Lafleur
[39:35] Speaker 4: McVeigh Shanahan, it's a pretty quarterback friendly operation. Jeremiah Love,
[39:41] Speaker 4: Trey McBride. If Marvin Harrison can ever do anything like
[39:45] Speaker 4: you said that, they do got some firepower. James Connor
[39:49] Speaker 4: still on the team. They signed the Falcons former running back.
[39:54] Speaker 4: But that division, I mean, they are that they got
[39:58] Speaker 4: a long way to go. It wouldn't shock me if
[40:00] Speaker 4: they're a team this year, like the trade deadline is,
[40:04] Speaker 4: you know, the Buddha Baker types like it's and it
[40:06] Speaker 4: just started kind of transitioning the way to kind of
[40:09] Speaker 4: with the Jets in Cleveland kind of went full rebuild
[40:11] Speaker 4: this year.
[40:12] Speaker 2: So there are four new playoff teams minimum every year,
[40:18] Speaker 2: seven potentially. So I think you and I see Cincinnati
[40:23] Speaker 2: as a team that is.
[40:25] Speaker 4: A new I would take them to win the North.
[40:26] Speaker 3: Yeah, I have.
[40:28] Speaker 2: I would say I have the New York Giants. I've
[40:30] Speaker 2: been high on the New York Giants and I thought
[40:32] Speaker 2: they added three starters, So I'm gonna before the New
[40:35] Speaker 2: York Giants. So I would go Cincinnati New York Giants.
[40:47] Speaker 4: It gets tough I'd probably go Cowboys right down instead
[40:50] Speaker 4: of the Giants. The Giants to me might be a
[40:53] Speaker 4: year away. I saw man Jeanie. He had a comment
[40:56] Speaker 4: that's you might be able to sack the quarterback, but
[40:59] Speaker 4: what if the other team he was running at every play?
[41:02] Speaker 4: They don't exactly have you know, part of losing Dexter
[41:05] Speaker 4: Lawrence is he was so important to hold up like
[41:11] Speaker 4: three guys as Brian Burns and Cavaon and those guys
[41:13] Speaker 4: are running around their defensive tackle unit. Now, in theory,
[41:17] Speaker 4: it's should be like guards and centers. You should be
[41:19] Speaker 4: able to find some bodies just to kind of throw
[41:22] Speaker 4: in there. But that's not That's sometimes easier said than done.
[41:26] Speaker 4: I might like them a year from now more than
[41:29] Speaker 4: I do right now, where I think the Cowboys are
[41:31] Speaker 4: a little bit more ready now. Obviously Harbob you know,
[41:35] Speaker 4: knows what he's doing. I just wonder, Yeah, we still
[41:38] Speaker 4: got a lot to learn about Jackson Dart. Like I
[41:41] Speaker 4: I they definitely have a lot of talent on the team.
[41:44] Speaker 4: One team Colin I like is the Saints.
[41:48] Speaker 3: I was gonna say that the Saints team really.
[41:52] Speaker 4: Good offensive line. Shuck. I mean, he's twenty five twenty
[41:57] Speaker 4: six years old, ready to roll. He looked good last
[41:59] Speaker 4: year they at ETN. Like one team I'm kind of
[42:02] Speaker 4: out on this year is the Jags. I think they
[42:05] Speaker 4: come back to earth a little bit. They lose ETN.
[42:07] Speaker 4: You know Jordan Tyson, I know a couple of coaches
[42:10] Speaker 4: with that staff look. I thought it was a little
[42:12] Speaker 4: bit of a risky pick. But if he is something
[42:15] Speaker 4: for them with a lave with ETN, with the quarterback,
[42:18] Speaker 4: with the offensive line. Their big question mark is defense,
[42:22] Speaker 4: like how good can they? But their division is Carolina
[42:27] Speaker 4: is actually not bad.
[42:28] Speaker 2: Dan.
[42:28] Speaker 4: I thought Dan Morgan's drafting pretty well too. But the
[42:31] Speaker 4: thing that I'd like Tyler Schuck more than I do
[42:33] Speaker 4: Bryce Young.
[42:34] Speaker 3: I like Detroit Drew Petsing.
[42:36] Speaker 2: I said this Arizona last year was like top ten
[42:39] Speaker 2: on third down, top ten in scoring with Jacoby Brissett.
[42:42] Speaker 2: I think their offensive coordinators clever. He goes to Detroit
[42:45] Speaker 2: where they went Ben Johnson, Johnny Morton. I think they
[42:48] Speaker 2: kind of rearrange the deck chairs and their coaching staff.
[42:52] Speaker 2: So I would say to me, the four teams we've
[42:54] Speaker 2: talked about that are going to make the Okay, I
[42:56] Speaker 2: like Cincinnati, New York Giants Detroit.
[42:59] Speaker 3: You like that.
[43:02] Speaker 4: I throw the Saints in there, They'll probably mighty and
[43:04] Speaker 4: you're in Europe again on the Saints. Okay, Well, one
[43:07] Speaker 4: team I could see flip flopping a little bit is
[43:12] Speaker 4: I do think this coach is good. It's Shane Steiken
[43:15] Speaker 4: and this team look like a real team. Oh God,
[43:18] Speaker 4: D Jones just solid. CJ. Allen the Georgia linebacker, I
[43:23] Speaker 4: love that guy, immediately great. And your guy Ballard. I
[43:28] Speaker 4: would say the position he's nailed the most over his
[43:30] Speaker 4: decade is linebacker. I mean, how many times has he
[43:33] Speaker 4: taken a linebacker? Passed the first round and that guy
[43:36] Speaker 4: becomes a stut. I think CJ. Allen immediately plug and play.
[43:40] Speaker 4: They have good offensive weapons. It's all gonna come down
[43:43] Speaker 4: to the quarterback, who I think the contract and it's
[43:47] Speaker 4: it's a little funky, but if he's healthy and he plays.
[43:50] Speaker 4: I don't know. Eighty eighty five percent of what we
[43:52] Speaker 4: saw last year they were eight and two, So to me,
[43:56] Speaker 4: the Texans are I mean, our legitimate Super Bowl can tender.
[44:00] Speaker 4: If CS just solid, I think Indy could. It could
[44:04] Speaker 4: supplant Jacksonville. They could flip flop a little bit. I
[44:06] Speaker 4: just think, Yeah, the Travis Hunter thing got weird fast.
[44:10] Speaker 4: You know what position is he gonna play?
[44:12] Speaker 2: Is?
[44:12] Speaker 4: How good is he going to be at corner? Do
[44:14] Speaker 4: they have enough firepower on offense? You lose etn who's
[44:18] Speaker 4: been really Trevor's right hand guy for a long time agoing,
[44:21] Speaker 4: you know, dating back to college. So I think Indy
[44:24] Speaker 4: could be a team that and I know they they
[44:27] Speaker 4: haven't won the division or made the playoffs now for
[44:29] Speaker 4: a while, but uh, that's let me add one.
[44:32] Speaker 2: Let me add one more because there's at least four
[44:34] Speaker 2: new playoff teams. So we have one, two, three, four, five, six,
[44:37] Speaker 2: Let me and seven? Your seven you got you know,
[44:41] Speaker 2: you got seven each conference, fourteen total. Kansas City Chiefs.
[44:45] Speaker 2: So if I had, if I told you you have
[44:47] Speaker 2: to pick four teams to make the playoffs that didn't,
[44:50] Speaker 2: I would go Chiefs, Cincinnati, Detroit, and Giants. So those
[44:56] Speaker 2: would be my four. Yours would be Cults, Saints, Dallas.
[45:01] Speaker 2: Who's your fourth?
[45:04] Speaker 4: I don't, yeah, I I don't to me the Colts,
[45:07] Speaker 4: I wouldn't say. I would feel more confident with Detroit
[45:11] Speaker 4: because Minnesota transitional period, I mean that defensive tackle. I
[45:15] Speaker 4: don't know what your people said. People are like, WHOA,
[45:17] Speaker 4: that's a bold move and that, but that's I text.
[45:22] Speaker 4: A lot of people said, Kevin O'Connell and Flores are
[45:25] Speaker 4: running that room. They don't have a GM, so in
[45:29] Speaker 4: the quarterback position is more. We'll see what Kyler Murray.
[45:31] Speaker 4: JJ's basically phased out Green Bay for a big transitional
[45:36] Speaker 4: period right now. Yeah, just in terms of roster. So
[45:39] Speaker 4: it's it's pretty right for Detroit to get right back
[45:42] Speaker 4: in because they have all their core guys coming back.
[45:44] Speaker 4: They just draft an offensive lineman, plug and play him.
[45:46] Speaker 4: They move sewell over. They do have some good defensive
[45:49] Speaker 4: pieces that you need to stay healthy. But I Cincinnati
[45:53] Speaker 4: is a team that I don't even think could just
[45:54] Speaker 4: make the playoffs. If you told me they won thirteen games.
[45:57] Speaker 4: I think it could be really really good. I think
[45:59] Speaker 4: that vision Pittsburgh, I'm gonna talk about this on my podcast.
[46:03] Speaker 4: Their front offices what they used to be for a
[46:06] Speaker 4: long time. I mean, most of my life is not
[46:08] Speaker 4: viewed that way anymore. No, Baltimore, pretty big roster transition
[46:12] Speaker 4: as well, a bunch of new coaches, you know, trying
[46:15] Speaker 4: to resurrect what we saw last year with Lamore Cleveland
[46:18] Speaker 4: obviously isn't very good, but they're like a sneaky bad
[46:21] Speaker 4: team because they could beat you on a given week.
[46:25] Speaker 4: To me, since he's I feel pretty confident about them winning.
[46:28] Speaker 4: The Saints a little bit more of a flyer just
[46:30] Speaker 4: because Kellen Moore year two, But they're they're a team
[46:33] Speaker 4: under the radar a little bit, I think for sure.
[46:38] Speaker 4: All Right, what did you think of the Drew Aller
[46:42] Speaker 4: Pittsburgh Steeler pick?
[46:44] Speaker 3: So I.
[46:47] Speaker 4: I am.
[46:48] Speaker 2: I've always had this belief John that if you're a
[46:51] Speaker 2: really good coordinator, you're not going to stay any place
[46:54] Speaker 2: for ten years because you're gonna want to run your
[46:57] Speaker 2: own show, right, And so Omar Kahn was like in
[47:01] Speaker 2: the building for a long time. You know, I think
[47:05] Speaker 2: if you're a real go getter, I think you leave
[47:08] Speaker 2: the building. And so I don't look at the Steters
[47:12] Speaker 2: front office as elite.
[47:14] Speaker 3: I just don't.
[47:15] Speaker 2: I think they played it safe with Mike McCarthy as
[47:17] Speaker 2: a higher who I don't think.
[47:18] Speaker 3: Is a disaster, but it's a safe play. They don't.
[47:22] Speaker 3: You know, there's a lot of reports they don't want
[47:24] Speaker 3: to go backwards.
[47:26] Speaker 2: You know. Drew Aller is kind of the classic There
[47:29] Speaker 2: is something to be said about just having instincts. I
[47:32] Speaker 2: remember years ago people like this Christian Hackenberg out of
[47:35] Speaker 2: Penn State, and I said on the air it was
[47:37] Speaker 2: probably the meanest thing I ever said. But I'm like,
[47:41] Speaker 2: he cannot play in the NFL. I watched him play
[47:43] Speaker 2: ten times in college. He is not a professional. He
[47:46] Speaker 2: doesn't have the instincts or the feel for the position. Well,
[47:48] Speaker 2: it was a you know, I don't know what happened
[47:50] Speaker 2: to the kid, but it didn't work. Drew Aller is
[47:53] Speaker 2: one of those guys. I just don't see the instincts.
[47:55] Speaker 2: He's a big kid, he can move a little, He's
[47:57] Speaker 2: got a big arm. Now if he gets the right
[47:59] Speaker 2: coach and it works with Mike McCarthy is a very
[48:02] Speaker 2: good offensive coach, really helps quarterbacks. But I when I
[48:05] Speaker 2: watched him play, I just didn't There's a there's something
[48:08] Speaker 2: about guys that just have a feel. It's like in
[48:11] Speaker 2: our business or you know, it's like you can go
[48:14] Speaker 2: to law school, but if you don't have the confidence,
[48:16] Speaker 2: then stand in front of a jury.
[48:18] Speaker 3: Some people.
[48:19] Speaker 2: My first boss out of college was a legendary Las
[48:22] Speaker 2: Vegas attorney and I asked him once, you know who
[48:25] Speaker 2: was the toughest attorney he went against. And he mentioned
[48:28] Speaker 2: him and he said, you know, he's got charisma, he
[48:30] Speaker 2: can sway people. And I forget the name of the attorney.
[48:34] Speaker 2: Jim Rogers, the late Jim Rodgers was my first boss.
[48:37] Speaker 2: His son, Perry Rodgers is a very successful agent, Shax agent.
[48:41] Speaker 2: He was on ra Agassi's best friend. Very smart guy,
[48:44] Speaker 2: smart family. And Jim Rodgers his dad was just a brilliant,
[48:49] Speaker 2: brilliant man. He owned multiple He was a lawyer, and
[48:53] Speaker 2: that he bought sun Belt Broadcasting. People could look it
[48:55] Speaker 2: up if they cared. But I taught I one time
[48:58] Speaker 2: went into his office and asked him about you know
[49:00] Speaker 2: law and who who are the great lawyers? And he
[49:03] Speaker 2: mentioned this guy and he was a good looking Vegas
[49:05] Speaker 2: guy and he said he could just women loved him.
[49:08] Speaker 2: He could just swear a jury. And there is in
[49:11] Speaker 2: every profession. Steve Jobs, was he the best engineer at Apple? No,
[49:16] Speaker 2: he could sell, he could see his visionary, he could
[49:19] Speaker 2: sell his product. I feel the same way about quarterbacks.
[49:23] Speaker 2: There is an instinctive feel to it. Some guys, just
[49:27] Speaker 2: like like when I watched Mahomes, he just has a
[49:30] Speaker 2: feel when to go. He just knows and and and
[49:36] Speaker 2: then there's other guys who I like, but they I
[49:38] Speaker 2: feel like, you know, we talked about this, certain guys
[49:41] Speaker 2: can't see the damn field. You know, they just can't
[49:44] Speaker 2: see the field. Other guys see the entire.
[49:47] Speaker 3: Field, and I just don't Drew Hollur to me, I
[49:49] Speaker 3: just felt like just something was missing.
[49:52] Speaker 4: Yeah, to me, he's your classic historic It's been happening forever.
[49:56] Speaker 4: You know, he's six four sixty five, he can move,
[49:59] Speaker 4: he's got the huge arm. In the biggest moment of
[50:02] Speaker 4: his career, he threw right to Notre Dame for no
[50:04] Speaker 4: reason in a game that they should have walked right
[50:07] Speaker 4: into the National Championship. And then this year was a
[50:09] Speaker 4: disaster before he got injured. And I just think that
[50:14] Speaker 4: we have a long list of guys because if he
[50:16] Speaker 4: just walked through a room, you'd be like, that guy's
[50:19] Speaker 4: a quarterback, right, that guy looks like a quarterback. But
[50:23] Speaker 4: then when it's a tie game, you know, in the
[50:25] Speaker 4: third quarter against a foe. He played on a team
[50:28] Speaker 4: two years ago that was multiple NFL running back I
[50:33] Speaker 4: mean defense was NFL players, multiple both coordinators, making three
[50:38] Speaker 4: million dollars. It's as good as he got in college
[50:41] Speaker 4: beside a couple of teams, and he lost them their
[50:44] Speaker 4: biggest game by far, in their two playoff games. When
[50:47] Speaker 4: you look back, they played SMU and they played Boise,
[50:49] Speaker 4: So it's not like, you know, it's not like they
[50:51] Speaker 4: were running through some big time teams and then they
[50:54] Speaker 4: finally got a foe with equal talent and he crumbled
[50:57] Speaker 4: in the biggest moment. I'm sure he's a good guy.
[51:00] Speaker 4: I'm with you. You know, when you look at Nussmeyer,
[51:03] Speaker 4: who doesn't nearly have the physical gifts, but when he
[51:07] Speaker 4: was healthy, he just has a much better feel. You know,
[51:09] Speaker 4: it's like it's like a cousin's or a deck. Those
[51:11] Speaker 4: guys have never been as gifted as most guys in
[51:13] Speaker 4: the league, but they're just they understand the position because
[51:17] Speaker 4: the position obviously Josh and Mahomes, but most guys in
[51:22] Speaker 4: the history of the league are not Elway and Rogers.
[51:24] Speaker 4: You get a lot of good quarterbacks. You know, Drew
[51:26] Speaker 4: Brees probably had a bottom ten arm in the league
[51:28] Speaker 4: his entire career. But his understanding is knowledge. Yeah, his
[51:32] Speaker 4: ability to think under pressure. That's the other thing I think,
[51:35] Speaker 4: as you're fatigued, what's Jimmy Johnson's think fatigue makes cowards
[51:38] Speaker 4: of us all in the fourth quarter, a lot of
[51:41] Speaker 4: guys screw up because it's your your sucking wind. The
[51:45] Speaker 4: schematics are going up against are crazy, and I just
[51:49] Speaker 4: I was like, what, why even waste a pick on that?
[51:53] Speaker 4: There's a ton of other quarterbacks I would have taken
[51:55] Speaker 4: if you're gonna go in the third round. Yeah.
[51:57] Speaker 2: The one guy I liked, Cade club Now from Clemson.
[52:00] Speaker 2: He doesn't really push the ball down the field. He
[52:02] Speaker 2: doesn't have a power arm. He moves pretty well.
[52:06] Speaker 3: You know, he's in took.
[52:07] Speaker 2: Yeah, he's another guy that I actually if I had
[52:09] Speaker 2: to take a quarterback in the third, fourth, fifth round,
[52:12] Speaker 2: it would have been k Clubnick. He moves real well,
[52:15] Speaker 2: great high school program. He doesn't have a huge arm.
[52:19] Speaker 2: But I think to your point earlier on this podcast,
[52:22] Speaker 2: I think there's a lot of good players at Clemson.
[52:23] Speaker 2: I think the culture something was wrong last year, like
[52:27] Speaker 2: everybody underachieved. It was almost like a disease within the program.
[52:31] Speaker 2: Something didn't Where I saw them play a half, I
[52:34] Speaker 2: think it was against Syracuse.
[52:35] Speaker 4: They they were a tough watch. They were a tough one.
[52:38] Speaker 2: They just got bulldozed by Syracuse in the half. I
[52:43] Speaker 2: apologize if I'm wrong, but I think it was a Saturday,
[52:45] Speaker 2: early afternoon, and I'm like, what they're getting destroyed by
[52:50] Speaker 2: Syracuse personnel. So I club nick to me is it
[52:53] Speaker 2: may be a career backup spot starter, but I think
[52:55] Speaker 2: there's something there.
[52:57] Speaker 4: One thing that jumped out to me is watching all
[52:59] Speaker 4: these guys I'm off the board from that program is
[53:03] Speaker 4: Dabo has He's getting crushed for the transfer portal, like
[53:07] Speaker 4: he doesn't use it. He's clearly recruiting pretty well. He's
[53:10] Speaker 4: doing a pretty good job. What if his message and
[53:13] Speaker 4: whatever his secret sauce is just gone, and isn't the
[53:17] Speaker 4: time maybe for him to for change. Like if you
[53:19] Speaker 4: told me Florida had hired him or one of these
[53:21] Speaker 4: other big programs, I'd be like, he's gonna just I
[53:25] Speaker 4: would say, light a fire of energy, passion and bring
[53:29] Speaker 4: you talent. Now. Part of it could just be in
[53:32] Speaker 4: a day and age where coordinators bounce around. He had
[53:35] Speaker 4: venables for a decade. Who's obviously one of the best
[53:38] Speaker 4: defensive minds in the sport in Tony Elliott, who I'm
[53:42] Speaker 4: pretty sure Virginia just gave a contract extension to who
[53:46] Speaker 4: I think was also there for basically a decade. Pretty
[53:48] Speaker 4: rare in this day and age, because since those guys
[53:51] Speaker 4: have gone, his program is kind of crumbled. But it's
[53:54] Speaker 4: not because they're going into these games under man. I mean,
[53:57] Speaker 4: if anything, he's going into this team they played probably
[54:01] Speaker 4: on their schedule beside Miami. He has a dramatic talent advantage.
[54:05] Speaker 2: Yeah, yeah, no, I think they're they're listen. This happened
[54:09] Speaker 2: to Bobby Bowden. He lost Mark Rick on his staff,
[54:12] Speaker 2: and he, you know, he lost a couple of coaches
[54:15] Speaker 2: on his staff and for a few years, Chuck a
[54:17] Speaker 2: Motto I think was the other guy.
[54:18] Speaker 4: Lost in his staff was a defensive coordinator.
[54:20] Speaker 2: I think yeah, and he just like he just wasn't
[54:22] Speaker 2: you know. They and he was older in age, and
[54:24] Speaker 2: it's hard. You don't quite have the energy. And back
[54:26] Speaker 2: then there was no nil so you had to go
[54:28] Speaker 2: beat the bushes for players in a high school.
[54:30] Speaker 3: So it happens.
[54:31] Speaker 2: I've seen it my entire life. I mean, I covered
[54:34] Speaker 2: Mike Bolotti forever at Oregon, and he lost Jeff Tedford
[54:36] Speaker 2: and there was a drop, and you know, here comes
[54:39] Speaker 2: Chip Kelly and there's a Serge. So, by the way,
[54:41] Speaker 2: Chip Kelly now is my neighbor again in Manhattan bea,
[54:44] Speaker 2: he was my neighbor.
[54:46] Speaker 3: He lives around the corner. I'm not going to give
[54:48] Speaker 3: the address, but he's right around the corner.
[54:51] Speaker 4: How far away do you live from Northwestern?
[54:53] Speaker 3: Fifteen minute drive beautiful.
[54:55] Speaker 4: I didn't realize Northwestern was that close to you when
[54:57] Speaker 4: I was out there. Is it just north of you?
[54:59] Speaker 3: No, it's south of me toward the city.
[55:02] Speaker 4: Is the city south of you?
[55:04] Speaker 2: Yeah? So I live in one neck. If you go
[55:06] Speaker 2: south of me, it's will Matt Kenilworth. I think Evanston
[55:12] Speaker 2: Rogers Park City.
[55:15] Speaker 4: Yeah, Jerry new Heizel out there too, or he couldn't quite.
[55:18] Speaker 3: Afford that neighborhood. Yeah, I'm not Chip spin around. Chip
[55:20] Speaker 3: has some of that NFL buy out money doing well. Yeah,
[55:26] Speaker 3: good to see anybody see you.
