[0:00] Speaker 1: We would like to acknowledge the traditional custodians of the
[0:03] Speaker 1: land that this podcast is recorded.
[0:08] Speaker 2: Hey, I love this podcast. I don't have titoo this week.
[0:21] Speaker 2: Thank you Deals. Before we get into this juicy dilemonade.
[0:25] Speaker 2: This Friday, we have a bit of a surprise announcement
[0:27] Speaker 2: that came across our desk unexpectedly and we thought we've
[0:30] Speaker 2: got to share this with specifically Brisbane, Gold Coast and
[0:34] Speaker 2: Northern Rivers Queensland based d L. Yeah, we're talking to you,
[0:37] Speaker 2: Queen's ladies. We have a PSA. There is a sale
[0:41] Speaker 2: on at the venue that we are putting Know Thyself
[0:44] Speaker 2: on next weekend. That's right next Friday, the twenty first
[0:47] Speaker 2: and Saturday the twenty second of August. We will be
[0:50] Speaker 2: in Brisbane performing Know Thyself and there is an afterpay
[0:53] Speaker 2: sale happening at the venue twenty percent off tickets. It's
[0:56] Speaker 2: a one off. It will not happen again at any
[0:58] Speaker 2: other shows. This is just for you Brismon girlies. Yeah,
[1:01] Speaker 2: just a treat for you guys to manage the expectations
[1:04] Speaker 2: of all other dls in other states like we wish
[1:07] Speaker 2: we could offer this to you, but it's unfortunately it's
[1:09] Speaker 2: got nothing to do with us. It's to do with
[1:11] Speaker 2: the venues. So if you're feeling yolo, if you don't
[1:14] Speaker 2: have plans this Friday or Saturday matinee, that's right. We
[1:17] Speaker 2: have a Matt name Brisbane for the first time DLS.
[1:19] Speaker 2: For those mammas who are perhaps breastfeeding and need to
[1:22] Speaker 2: do bad time with their kids, this is for you.
[1:24] Speaker 2: This is your last opportunity to see us live intour
[1:28] Speaker 2: in Brisbane DLS because REVS and I, as we've announced,
[1:31] Speaker 2: we're not going to be touring again anytime soon. So
[1:33] Speaker 2: we hope that you can join us, and we hope
[1:35] Speaker 2: that you can make the most of this sale opportunity. Yeah,
[1:39] Speaker 2: grab your besties.
[1:40] Speaker 1: And come along.
[1:40] Speaker 2: We can't wait to see you. There link in the
[1:42] Speaker 2: show notes. Well, let's get into the episode.
[1:44] Speaker 1: Hello, Welcome to Bestie Hotline.
[1:46] Speaker 2: Bring ring guys. We open our live show tomorrow, introducing yourself.
[1:50] Speaker 2: I'm Hayrie's a peanut. Towurs the night before Christmas and
[1:53] Speaker 2: all through the night and we don't.
[1:55] Speaker 1: Have time for introductions.
[1:56] Speaker 2: We've got a shirt today tomorrow. I can't believe it
[1:58] Speaker 2: is the day before. We're in Canberra and tomorrow we'll
[2:01] Speaker 2: be taking over the Canberra Playhouse to open our twenty
[2:04] Speaker 2: twenty six live show. Know thyself, Gee, you guys can Baron's.
[2:09] Speaker 2: You're going to be the first to feast your eyes
[2:11] Speaker 2: on this unhanded show.
[2:13] Speaker 1: Maybe the best fucking night.
[2:14] Speaker 2: We're gonna have so much fun. I feel so ready
[2:17] Speaker 2: yeah to put you know, we've been living in it
[2:20] Speaker 2: with it rehearsing, chaufam have obviously seen it and experienced it,
[2:24] Speaker 2: but we're ready for the DLS to have a freaking
[2:28] Speaker 2: fun night with us and the group chat, the backstage
[2:30] Speaker 2: past group chat is going off.
[2:32] Speaker 1: Everyone is just like excitement, be peeking.
[2:35] Speaker 2: Sure is also DLS. Even though it's the night before,
[2:39] Speaker 2: it's not too late to upgrade to viddle.
[2:41] Speaker 1: Oh yeah, oh.
[2:42] Speaker 2: My gosh, get your merch pack and come and hang
[2:44] Speaker 2: with us, get a photo and upgrade your evening. Yeah,
[2:47] Speaker 2: we've done it differently to previous years DLS. You can
[2:50] Speaker 2: sit wherever you want, but you can still get the goods.
[2:53] Speaker 2: A lot of people are surprising their best us upgrades
[2:56] Speaker 2: and it's warming our hearts. If you do that, please
[2:59] Speaker 2: let us know because we we just fucking love it
[3:01] Speaker 2: and we love to like know about who's doing that.
[3:03] Speaker 2: So we can say a special hello at the show.
[3:05] Speaker 2: Absolutely so who called the Bestie hotline today? Jim, we
[3:08] Speaker 2: have a write in. Kate revs our dl says, I
[3:12] Speaker 2: need to vent. My kid came home with a school project,
[3:15] Speaker 2: so we spent the weekend making a perfectly acceptable cardboard model.
[3:20] Speaker 2: Fast forward to presentation day, and apparently every other child
[3:24] Speaker 2: has been secretly sponsored by an engineering firm. One project
[3:27] Speaker 2: had lights, one had moving parts. One volcano was producing
[3:32] Speaker 2: actual smoke. Meanwhile our project was being held together by glue,
[3:36] Speaker 2: tape and honesty. At what point did help your child
[3:41] Speaker 2: in inverted commas? Become build it yourself and bring your resume.
[3:45] Speaker 2: I want to make sure the teachers know and then
[3:48] Speaker 2: rage in the class. WhatsApp? What do you think? I
[3:52] Speaker 2: mean the teachers know?
[3:54] Speaker 1: They not teachers know when they hate it?
[3:57] Speaker 2: Do they they hate it? Talk to me? Do you
[4:00] Speaker 2: know a teacher who's divulged. They know a couple of
[4:03] Speaker 2: teachers and they hate it when it's obvious that a
[4:07] Speaker 2: parent has done something someone they're about. That's not why
[4:10] Speaker 2: they got into teaching. And how's your kid gonna land?
[4:13] Speaker 2: So lame? Sorry, but you're lame if you do your
[4:17] Speaker 2: kids projects for them. Yeah. I do think a lot
[4:19] Speaker 2: of parents live vicariously through their kids. I do think
[4:23] Speaker 2: there are a lot of competitive parents out there. I've
[4:26] Speaker 2: experienced them myself. I've seen them in the world, and
[4:29] Speaker 2: I'm like, you care a lot. Yeah, But it's like
[4:33] Speaker 2: what doctor Becky would say, you are robbing your kid
[4:36] Speaker 2: of an opportunity for self esteem, actually robbing them of
[4:41] Speaker 2: that feeling of like I did this and it's mine
[4:44] Speaker 2: and I am proud of myself if you go and
[4:46] Speaker 2: do it for them. And also what year you in
[4:49] Speaker 2: if there's volcanoes and shit, I'm gonna guess it's like
[4:51] Speaker 2: year two or three? Oh really? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, I'm
[4:53] Speaker 2: not there. Yeah, well hey you three then okay. And
[4:56] Speaker 2: because it's not like has Teddy done models to this scale?
[5:00] Speaker 1: Yes, but we don't make smoken lights happen.
[5:03] Speaker 2: He would be the one that was perfectly adequate cardboard
[5:05] Speaker 2: and he would do it his fucking self. But he
[5:08] Speaker 2: takes it in and he's proud of it or is not.
[5:10] Speaker 2: And that's the lesson, you know. But does it also
[5:14] Speaker 2: not only rob your kid from self esteem? But is
[5:17] Speaker 2: it hurting other kids? Yeah, because they're kind of seeing
[5:20] Speaker 2: other kids projects and thinking that there's this shit when
[5:23] Speaker 2: actually they've had a whole army support them in building this. Yeah,
[5:27] Speaker 2: or just one parent who is seriously experienced at engineering. Look,
[5:31] Speaker 2: it's realistic to think that school, if it's good, education
[5:35] Speaker 2: will cover all bases and there will be some subjects
[5:38] Speaker 2: in some lanes that.
[5:40] Speaker 1: Your parent can help you with.
[5:41] Speaker 2: I was about to say, because most parents have a
[5:44] Speaker 2: specialty and there's got to be some perks. And like,
[5:46] Speaker 2: you know Eiler does public speaking, does she get notes
[5:49] Speaker 2: from a trained director? Yes? You know your child does dance?
[5:54] Speaker 2: Does she get I know you try not to, but
[5:55] Speaker 2: if she would have wanted to, she has a trained
[5:58] Speaker 2: as a biographer in her house who can help her. Hey,
[6:01] Speaker 2: if we're doing science and someone is a trained engineer,
[6:05] Speaker 2: and like maybe they're mucky in a little more than
[6:07] Speaker 2: they would on the music project. Okay, but it's just
[6:10] Speaker 2: one like everything has to be such a high level.
[6:13] Speaker 1: It's just boring for everyone involved.
[6:16] Speaker 2: I agree. You know, I used to be jealous of
[6:18] Speaker 2: the kids whose parents were a doctor and they could
[6:21] Speaker 2: get written a sick note. And I remember thinking what
[6:24] Speaker 2: a flex And I remember like have like an oath
[6:27] Speaker 2: about now do they? I think it's like unethical to
[6:30] Speaker 2: write a fake sick note. I don't think so. Well,
[6:33] Speaker 2: they think plenty of our friends did it. I feel
[6:36] Speaker 2: like medical professionals have, like, you know, an ethical standard
[6:40] Speaker 2: that they don't. I just think them and their mates
[6:43] Speaker 2: is what I would do. If you and I were doctors,
[6:47] Speaker 2: we'd have different letterheads, right, and we would just switch
[6:51] Speaker 2: a pad and be like, hey, keep my pad at
[6:53] Speaker 2: your house, King, And if you need to write a
[6:55] Speaker 2: sick note, you know, it's what we'd do. Would we
[6:57] Speaker 2: would exploit the system? Would we? I think? So okay,
[7:00] Speaker 2: And this is me who loves receipts, but when it
[7:02] Speaker 2: comes to bay, I know off brand. But I feel
[7:04] Speaker 2: like with sick notes, it's like sick note, schmick note.
[7:06] Speaker 2: You know. Anyway, no one hundred percent for you. Look,
[7:10] Speaker 2: we did go into this in quite a bit of depth,
[7:13] Speaker 2: this exact topic on a recent More Time episode, and
[7:16] Speaker 2: we did say, and I just want to lightly reiterate, like, look,
[7:19] Speaker 2: some kids need help, like oh, they just simply won't
[7:22] Speaker 2: do it. And some kids are self motivated, and some
[7:24] Speaker 2: don't give a fuck, you know what I mean. There's
[7:25] Speaker 2: a spectrum of how much a parent has to sit
[7:29] Speaker 2: down with a particular kid. But you know when someone's just.
[7:32] Speaker 1: Like made this their whole weekend, and.
[7:35] Speaker 2: Frankly, I feel sorry for you. That's what you have
[7:38] Speaker 2: to do, and I feel sorry for your kid because
[7:40] Speaker 2: it doesn't reflect well. Okay, but what if your kid
[7:42] Speaker 2: is genuinely asking for help and it's like a bonding
[7:45] Speaker 2: exercise that you can do together. I think the key
[7:48] Speaker 2: is to kind of you at some point have to
[7:50] Speaker 2: go We're not going to go and buy a lighting kit,
[7:53] Speaker 2: you know what I mean. We're not going to set
[7:55] Speaker 2: up a circuit for this, like it's just going to
[7:58] Speaker 2: be cardboard and paint. Okay, right, I agree. Okay. We
[8:02] Speaker 2: have a very dear friend who is a costume designer
[8:04] Speaker 2: and her kids crush Book Week every year. In fact,
[8:08] Speaker 2: it's the thing I look forward.
[8:09] Speaker 1: But it's like Hamish Blake's cake night.
[8:11] Speaker 2: I look forward to her instagram on book Week because
[8:14] Speaker 2: I know her girls are going to have the most
[8:16] Speaker 2: incredible costumes, as they fucking should. Because there is a
[8:19] Speaker 2: bit of a like, well, your mom's a costume designer.
[8:22] Speaker 2: You can't come in a fucking camarts, you know what
[8:25] Speaker 2: her reputations on the line, Except you know, and you know,
[8:28] Speaker 2: and if you can and if it's a bonding and
[8:30] Speaker 2: it's a joy space and all that stuff. So maybe
[8:32] Speaker 2: I don't know. Maybe for the engineers, this is all
[8:34] Speaker 2: they've got. Yes, this is the time to shine. What
[8:37] Speaker 2: else can they do.
[8:38] Speaker 1: With their kid?
[8:39] Speaker 2: Maybe? Have we done a one ady? Have we done
[8:41] Speaker 2: a reverse? Who? No? Card? Are we now go eating
[8:43] Speaker 2: our words and being like you know what, I don't
[8:45] Speaker 2: want to let the engineer's engineer. Yeah, let them have
[8:48] Speaker 2: their moment in the sun. I will say, though, I'm
[8:50] Speaker 2: telling you right now. The teachers aren't like that's impressive.
[8:53] Speaker 2: I love all this.
[8:54] Speaker 1: They're like this is they know?
[8:56] Speaker 2: I know, and they like we know, no, I know
[9:00] Speaker 2: when speeches are written by parents or like you know
[9:03] Speaker 2: they Yeah. At my kid's school, they had this art
[9:05] Speaker 2: show and there were kids who were putting in entries
[9:08] Speaker 2: from the school holiday workshop that they did that. My
[9:11] Speaker 2: kids also went to where they brought home paintings that
[9:14] Speaker 2: were insanely impressive, and I was like, you didn't paint that,
[9:19] Speaker 2: or you did, but under heavy guidance, you know, where
[9:23] Speaker 2: it wasn't their own creative. I think they were just
[9:25] Speaker 2: learning that. Like Rafa came home from this art camp
[9:28] Speaker 2: with like the most beautiful lama head with like a
[9:32] Speaker 2: party hat with like detailed brushstrokes, and I was like,
[9:35] Speaker 2: you fucking didn't paint that, but it was impressive, Like
[9:38] Speaker 2: it sold the art camp to me. I was like, wow,
[9:40] Speaker 2: you actually bring your kid. Actually, so who painted it? Well,
[9:43] Speaker 2: I don't know if it's a paint by numbers okay situation,
[9:47] Speaker 2: but you know, Rafa came home with it and I
[9:49] Speaker 2: was like, you didn't do that by yourself. You know,
[9:52] Speaker 2: you were heavily supported, And I thought, cool, but it's
[9:55] Speaker 2: not an artwork I want to chuck because it's genuinely
[9:58] Speaker 2: and they frame it like this art camp puts this
[10:00] Speaker 2: beautiful black cardboard frame. And so I think the whole
[10:03] Speaker 2: experience is for you to go here is are ready
[10:06] Speaker 2: to hang peace from your child that you'd be proud
[10:08] Speaker 2: to share in your house. Right, But at Rafa's art show,
[10:13] Speaker 2: heaps of kids submitted their school holiday artwork because I
[10:16] Speaker 2: was like, yeah, my kid did that camp, okay, you know,
[10:19] Speaker 2: and some of them won, like, which is fine, but
[10:22] Speaker 2: I think it's important to let them do it and
[10:25] Speaker 2: to end to also learn a bit of self motivation.
[10:28] Speaker 2: You don't have to fucking win everything everything and crush everything.
[10:33] Speaker 2: Sometimes I don't know, science ain't your thing. Maybe you're
[10:37] Speaker 2: better at rugby or choir or maths, you know what
[10:40] Speaker 2: I mean. You don't have to like absolutely ten out
[10:44] Speaker 2: of ten everything all the time. Yeah, totally. And look,
[10:46] Speaker 2: I've got a son who's not like super motivated, especially
[10:49] Speaker 2: with art things because he has struggles with fine motor
[10:52] Speaker 2: and often he will ask me for my help. But
[10:55] Speaker 2: I'm not going to come up with the idea for him,
[10:58] Speaker 2: you know, like I'm not going to sit there and go, oh,
[11:00] Speaker 2: I know, let's do this. Yeah, I'm like, what do
[11:02] Speaker 2: you feel like? You almost use the bonding experience to,
[11:05] Speaker 2: if anything, guide ideas out of them. That's how I
[11:09] Speaker 2: would use that time, is like, that's a great idea, buddy,
[11:12] Speaker 2: to build that self esteem. Let's do your idea. And
[11:16] Speaker 2: then if he's like, oh, can go totally. And if
[11:19] Speaker 2: he's like, hey, can you help me sticky take this
[11:21] Speaker 2: bear or I'm strung, you know, I would help with that,
[11:23] Speaker 2: but certainly not take over. It's the leading with your
[11:26] Speaker 2: ideas where I think it's actually a Slason. Smoke is hilarious,
[11:30] Speaker 2: Lights and smoke a full circuit that's hilarious or hang
[11:36] Speaker 2: on Devil's advocate for a second. I do have a
[11:39] Speaker 2: friend who has a son who does robotics and engineering
[11:44] Speaker 2: and he's a whiz at it. And on her Instagram
[11:47] Speaker 2: she shared this amazing video where he made out of
[11:50] Speaker 2: lego technique a claw machine to pick up their marshmallows.
[11:56] Speaker 2: I think they had like movie night and he put like,
[11:58] Speaker 2: you know, those really big fat marshmallows in it, and
[12:01] Speaker 2: the claw like picked it up, and then it maneuvers
[12:03] Speaker 2: and then it drops in this little bit and it
[12:05] Speaker 2: slides down a sliding.
[12:07] Speaker 1: Comes out the anphone.
[12:07] Speaker 2: Now I know this friend, she doesn't have an engineering
[12:11] Speaker 2: bone in her body. She definitely did not help with
[12:14] Speaker 2: this at all. And her son is extremely clever. But
[12:17] Speaker 2: I also know he goes to fairs outside of school time,
[12:20] Speaker 2: so it's his thing. So yeah, I think it's important
[12:23] Speaker 2: to recognize that as well. Some kids who will like
[12:25] Speaker 2: this is what I love about school for our kids
[12:28] Speaker 2: is the kid who came last in the swimming race
[12:30] Speaker 2: will crush it at dance, or like the kid who
[12:33] Speaker 2: I don't know doesn't do that well academically has a
[12:36] Speaker 2: solo in band, and everyone has their moment, and it
[12:38] Speaker 2: doesn't have to be the same people killing it all
[12:41] Speaker 2: the time. You know. I think it's lovely to see
[12:44] Speaker 2: some people sow in one area and then their average
[12:47] Speaker 2: in another, because that's human beings and that's life, And personally,
[12:51] Speaker 2: that's what I search for in a school one hundred percent.
[12:53] Speaker 2: All that platform, everybody, everybody in the lane or area
[12:58] Speaker 2: of their interest rather than just academics. That is me personally.
[13:03] Speaker 2: If you want to send your kid to a school
[13:04] Speaker 2: that is academic focused so that they're with their people,
[13:07] Speaker 2: and maybe that said, think that's fine. It's like our
[13:09] Speaker 2: schools are sports heavy, but I love diversity. Yeah, me too,
[13:13] Speaker 2: and I do you kids projects? Who's got the fucking time? Yeah?
[13:18] Speaker 2: All mental space thinking about I like, can't fit what
[13:22] Speaker 2: I have to do into the day, let alone sheep
[13:25] Speaker 2: building a fucking volcano with lights and smoke. I can't
[13:28] Speaker 2: sim and I will not and I will not because
[13:30] Speaker 2: you know what I'm going to do, gems and fucking cory.
[13:32] Speaker 2: It is singing, lotty, yapping and many glorious costumes because
[13:36] Speaker 2: our live show opens tomorrow. Well, I love the segway there, Resie.
[13:40] Speaker 2: I see what you did, and you know what. I'm
[13:42] Speaker 2: proud of you for stepping out of your comfort zone
[13:45] Speaker 2: and learning new dance moves that you didn't think you
[13:47] Speaker 2: were capable of doing, and now you're nailing dissociating. She's
[13:51] Speaker 2: got this deal.
[13:51] Speaker 1: I'm doing it for the lolls.
[13:53] Speaker 2: No one's coming to see me dance this out.
[13:55] Speaker 1: They're not gem Yes, sale de Lulu.
[13:58] Speaker 2: I'm not loving you, but don't worry you. Guys. You'll
[14:00] Speaker 2: have a good laugh at me shaking margroove. No, they're
[14:02] Speaker 2: laughing at you while watching you dance. Okay, two things
[14:06] Speaker 2: can be true. We laugh together. I'm laughing at you,
[14:09] Speaker 2: though they will be they'd better be all right. Love
[14:13] Speaker 2: you to see that. Have a good weekend, and as always,
[14:16] Speaker 2: we'll be back in your ears bright nearly on Tuesday
[14:18] Speaker 2: with a regular episode Toulu to Laru, No, not too
[14:23] Speaker 2: Laru to Huru? Can I posit something? Toodles tootles
