Saving money matters, but at some point, keeping too much cash in the bank can work against your financial goals. In this episode of The Table, Anthony O’Neal breaks down how much you really need in emergency savings, why inflation quietly eats away at idle cash, and what to do with the money you have above that number. He explains his three-tier emergency fund strategy, the difference between saving and building wealth, and why fear can sometimes disguise itself as financial wisdom. Anthony also opens up about his own experience hoarding cash instead of investing and why building wealth today is ultimately about creating freedom, security and a stronger legacy for your family. [0:00] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The generation before us use always tell us growing up, save your money son, save your money daughter.
[0:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But cannot tell you to true where that generation failed us, they never taught us what happens after we've saved enough.
[0:20] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And that gap is costing us my generation thousands of dollars a year.
[0:27] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And I believe it's about to cost you thousands as well if nobody tells you the number.
[0:35] \[SPEAKER_00\]: If you have, let's say 5,010,015,000, and even some of you all may have six figures.
[0:41] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It's sitting in your checking account right now, filling proud about that cushion.
[0:46] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Well, today's episode, I'm gonna show you why that pride might be costing you some money.
[0:54] \[SPEAKER_00\]: There's a number where safe turns into unwise, safe turns into stuck.
[0:59] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And by the end of today's episode, you'll know what that number is for your life, and exactly what to do with everything that is above it.
[1:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Being back in school that's taught me to make sure that I properly do the research, and that what I was doing my research.
[1:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: At 2025, bank report found that 60% of individuals in America
[1:24] \[SPEAKER_00\]: but there's another group.
[1:27] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And if your watching is, it might be you.
[1:29] \[SPEAKER_00\]: There's another group of people who did the opposite.
[1:32] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They did save.
[1:33] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They built the balance of 2005, 2010, or maybe even more, right?
[1:39] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And that's not a problem.
[1:41] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I would say that could be a win.
[1:44] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But here's what nobody taught us.
[1:47] \[SPEAKER_00\]: We learned save your money, nobody taught us what to do once we've saved enough.
[1:53] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So people just kept stacking cash that's doing nothing while life is getting more expensive around us.
[2:03] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I'm going to give you five reasons today.
[2:05] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Very first reason we should come up on a screen so your cash is sitting idle.
[2:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The really emergency fund number.
[2:13] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I would say the insurer's limit almost nobody checks and confirms.
[2:19] \[SPEAKER_00\]: What a big balance does to your decisions and the real difference between saving and building.
[2:27] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Listen, if you have not subscribed to today's, or not to today's, but to the channel, this is exactly the kind of conversation we have here at the table.
[2:37] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So do me a favor, hit that subscribe button, share today's episode, and let's get into
[2:45] \[SPEAKER_00\]: inflation is averaging right about two to four percent this year.
[2:50] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Okay, I'm going to use three percent.
[2:53] \[SPEAKER_00\]: If $10,000 sits in a regular account, a regular account earning close to nothing, it loses roughly $300 of real value in a year.
[3:02] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Listen, nobody stole it.
[3:04] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Nobody took it from your back account.
[3:06] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Everything around it just got more expensive while it stayed still.
[3:11] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You wouldn't hire someone, pay them full salary, and let them sit in the break room doing nothing.
[3:18] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But that's what a lot of us are doing with our cash today when it's just sitting in a regular account.
[3:26] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I have one condition first though.
[3:28] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This only applies once you are, I will say, consumer debt free.
[3:33] \[SPEAKER_00\]: No investment is going to beat or no investment beats guaranteed 25% credit card entries working against you.
[3:41] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So debt-free consumer specifically debt-free is always going to come first over here which a boy Anthony O'Neill.
[3:49] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But let's just say you are consumer debt-free and you're letting a large balance sleep out of habit.
[3:57] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That lazy employee is causing you more than you think.
[4:02] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And when I say lazy employee, I'm talking about your money because remember this, your money should be working for you and harder than you for more money.
[4:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So I want to give you some things on what I believe you should actually do about it.
[4:20] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Number four, we get there.
[4:22] \[SPEAKER_00\]: If your money is sitting in a regular savings account right now, earning, let's say, 0.01%, that's not saving.
[4:29] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That's slowly losing to inflation with a false sense of security.
[4:34] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I need you to get a high-year saves account that can pay 10 to 15 times more, same FDIC and short protection plan.
[4:43] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This is exactly the fix for lazy employee,
[4:47] \[SPEAKER_00\]: quote-unquote, called money.
[4:50] \[SPEAKER_00\]: All right, so a matter of fact, take out this quick commercial.
[4:53] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This is family.
[4:55] \[SPEAKER_00\]: If your savings account is earning less than 1%, you're literally donating money back to the bank.
[5:00] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You see, traditional savings accounts are paying pennies, while high-year savings accounts are paying dollars.
[5:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And the gap is costing you real wealth every single year.
[5:12] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I want to get real with you here real quick.
[5:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: When $10,000 a regular bank might pay you $40 a year, but a top high yield savings account that's $400 to $500 a year just for moving your money.
[5:25] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That's hundreds of extra dollars in your pocket.
[5:28] \[SPEAKER_00\]: No extra work, no risk, and your money stay safe and FDIC and short.
[5:33] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Nearly 1 in 4 Americans have zero emergency savings, and most who do are missing out on free money.
[5:41] \[SPEAKER_00\]: By leaving their cash and lazy accounts, the highest savings account is the fastest simplest upgrade you can make to hit your emergency fund and short-term goals faster.
[5:53] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So, listen, stop letting your heart earn dollars say lazy.
[5:57] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Visit anthonyonil.com for SaaS savings, compare the best high-year savings accounts and open yours in literally two minutes.
[6:05] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Every extra dollar interest gets you closer to financial freedom, so please do not wait.
[6:11] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Don't let another year go by earning pennies.
[6:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Go to anthonyonil.com for SaaS savings.
[6:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Let your money start working for you today.
[6:21] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Alright, let's get back to the show.
[6:23] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So there's three tiers.
[6:25] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The remuts of NetPay if you've got a stable income and no dependence relying on you, all right?
[6:33] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Then I would say go to six months if you're the sole income or you have some children at your eight dependents.
[6:43] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Now for me and for a small group of us, nine to 12 months if you're self-employed or your income goes up and down.
[6:53] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Three tiers, you see that?
[6:55] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You see that?
[6:56] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Three months if it's just you, six months if you have a family or some are depending on you, nine to 12 months, set aside in a high-year saves account if you are self-employed or your income flux shoelaces.
[7:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And watch this, let me say this too, bigger isn't automatically better.
[7:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I've talked to people sitting on 18 months of expenses.
[7:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Their real number was closer to six.
[7:19] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That extra cash wasn't wisdom.
[7:23] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It was fear wearing a disguise, but wisdom prepares and fear hoards.
[7:31] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So, what you need to do is pretty much, I always say, the remasable net pay, six months of your net pay, nine to 12 months of your net pay.
[7:44] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That's your line.
[7:46] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Everything under it stays untouched.
[7:49] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Everything above it is what the rest of this video was going to be about.
[7:55] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Say this one more time, so it's super clear.
[7:58] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Yes, I am repeating myself for y'all jokers in the comments because I want it to be clear.
[8:03] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The read must of your net pay.
[8:05] \[SPEAKER_00\]: If you are single, you have no one depending on you.
[8:09] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Six months of your net pay of your household net income if you're married with children and someone depends on you.
[8:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Nine to 12 months if you are self-employed or entrepreneur and your income fluctuates.
[8:25] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Anything above those numbers depending on the three tier, one of the tiers that you're in, that's what we're about to talk about.
[8:35] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That's exactly what we're about to talk about.
[8:39] \[SPEAKER_00\]: For those of you who do not know this, this is going to be very, very basic.
[8:45] \[SPEAKER_00\]: FDIC insurance covers $250,000 per depositor, per bank.
[8:52] \[SPEAKER_00\]: If this, say for an example, you have $300,000 sitting in one account.
[8:54] \[SPEAKER_00\]: 60,000 or 50,000 of it is sitting exposed.
[9:02] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Not because your bank is in trouble, but because nobody told you there was a ceiling.
[9:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: On the majority of you all watching this, do not have that, but I really want you to understand, right?
[9:13] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But I do believe we have some who are watching, and they do have that.
[9:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So here's the fix.
[9:19] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Once you approach that limit at one institution, split it across a second high-year account or move the excess into investing once your foundation is solid.
[9:30] \[SPEAKER_00\]: insurance limits only matter from money sitting steel, money sitting steel.
[9:43] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Remember, wealth is about strategy and systems.
[9:49] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And this is exactly why I tell people not to stop at one account, splitting your emergency fund across two high yield accounts, doesn't just protect you from insurance ceiling, it means more of your money is earning real interest instead of sitting exposed in one place.
[10:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This is family.
[10:11] \[SPEAKER_00\]: If your savings account is earning less than 1% you're literally donating money back to the bank.
[10:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You see, traditional savings accounts are paying pennies while high yield savings accounts are paying dollars and the gap is costing you real wealth every single year.
[10:29] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I want to get real with you here real quick.
[10:31] \[SPEAKER_00\]: When $10,000 a regular bank might pay you $40 a year, but a top high yield savings account that's $400 to $500 a year just for moving your money.
[10:41] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That's hundreds of extra dollars in your pocket.
[10:45] \[SPEAKER_00\]: No extra work, no risk, and your money stay safe and FDIC and short.
[10:50] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Nearly one in four Americans have zero emergency savings, and most who do are missing out on free money.
[10:58] \[SPEAKER_00\]: By leaving their cash and lazy accounts, a high-o-saving account is the fastest, simplest upgrade you can make to hit your emergency fund and short-term goals faster.
[11:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So, listen, stop letting your heart earn dollars say lazy.
[11:13] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Visit anthonyonil.com for SaaS savings, compare the best high-year savings accounts and open yours in literally two minutes.
[11:21] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Every extra dollar interest gets you closer to financial freedom, so please do not wait.
[11:27] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Don't let another year go by earning pennies.
[11:30] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Go to anthonyonil.com for SaaS savings.
[11:34] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Let your money start working for you today.
[11:37] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Alright, let's get back to the show.
[11:40] \[SPEAKER_00\]: a visible balance, changes behavior, even without a conscious decision.
[11:48] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Twenty-two thousand dollars in the app starts filling like spending money.
[11:52] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Not because you decide to spend it, but because no stops filling necessary.
[11:57] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I'm saying one more time.
[11:59] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I'm saying one more time.
[12:00] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So I'm going to get this.
[12:01] \[SPEAKER_00\]: a visible balance, changes behavior even without a conscious decision.
[12:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So say you got $22,000 in the app and the app starts to feel like it's spending money.
[12:12] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Not because you decide to spend it, but because, quote unquote, no stops filling necessary.
[12:19] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Six months later, now you've got $4,000 left in your account and you can't explain what you did with the rest of the money.
[12:31] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It also changes what other people expect from you.
[12:35] \[SPEAKER_00\]: If that's hitting close to home, I've got a full video on money boundaries with family.
[12:41] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And I'm a, I'm a see if I could link that I got to find it, right?
[12:44] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But I'm a see if I can link that in today's episode.
[12:48] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Here's the fix.
[12:50] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Automate, I want you to automate the extra, right?
[12:55] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And you should automate the extra out before it ever feels like spending money.
[13:00] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Never let, never rely on your own willpower.
[13:03] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You don't need to test yourself.
[13:05] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You know, this is not a sin, but I'm reminded of what the Bible says.
[13:09] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It says, flee the very appearance of sin.
[13:13] \[SPEAKER_00\]: meaning run, leave, get away from it.
[13:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: All right, don't even test yourself.
[13:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Don't, don't, don't, I'm strong enough, nah, man.
[13:20] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I know my weakness is as a man.
[13:22] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I know, I know where the enemy can get me at.
[13:24] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And so sometimes, I'm gonna even put myself in an environment to be tested.
[13:29] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And if you know one of your weaknesses, because remember, this is not a sin thing.
[13:33] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This is just a weakness thing.
[13:35] \[SPEAKER_00\]: If you know you're not strong in this area financially, don't even test yourself.
[13:39] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Just automatically get this thing deposited into the account.
[13:44] \[SPEAKER_00\]: But now I need you to understand this and I want to be clear about this, saving protects you and your family, building grows you and your family.
[13:54] \[SPEAKER_00\]: These are not the same things.
[13:57] \[SPEAKER_00\]: A savings account will protect you and your family today, a building account will grow your money to eventually one day protect you and your family down the road.
[14:12] \[SPEAKER_00\]: What's not a word about this?
[14:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Saving is the floor.
[14:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It keeps your family safe when life throws something unexpected.
[14:22] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Building an A investing after your consumer debt free and your real number is saved is different.
[14:30] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You see, that's not about surviving the next surprise.
[14:33] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That's about your money, your money compounding for decades and decades and buying back your time.
[14:41] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Can you imagine what happens when your son of your daughter turns 25 in?
[14:46] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Because you did everything right.
[14:48] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They don't necessarily have to start off working, I'm saying I don't pull like this.
[14:54] \[SPEAKER_00\]: They don't have to start their adult life by working a job or career they do not like, because the mom and dad put them in position to start where they want to start.
[15:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Sorry, I got quiet because it's like, man, I'm thinking about that now with my two adopted daughters, my blood cousins.
[15:29] \[SPEAKER_00\]: My man, I was so would've got them earlier.
[15:34] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Man, I wish I would've invested in them earlier.
[15:45] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Sorry, I'm getting a little emotional over here myself because it's like, man.
[15:50] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This is how I know I'm getting older and just getting more mature because the decisions I'm making today are no longer just about Anthony O'Neill.
[16:02] \[SPEAKER_00\]: The reason why I'm investing so much is because of them is because of my children.
[16:06] \[SPEAKER_00\]: It's because of the legacy that I want to leave behind when I'm no longer here.
[16:12] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Let me get back to the episode.
[16:16] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Consumer Death Refers, using a decimal ball, real number saved second, both done, cool.
[16:25] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Everything above that line moves into investing.
[16:28] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I'm talking about your retirement accounts, index funds, ETFs, these are assets that grow over decades.
[16:36] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Your money isn't just a number and app, a stewardship.
[16:41] \[SPEAKER_00\]: What you do with the surplus says whether you're building towards financial freedom or you're building towards true freedom or just building a bigger pal of fear.
[16:50] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I'm starting getting a little emotional because I remember being there.
[16:57] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Let me save, save, save.
[16:58] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And I remember my, one of my, I believe my closest friend,
[17:04] \[SPEAKER_00\]: He kind of checked me one day when he gave me Gucci shoes.
[17:07] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I said, man, I can't spend this, man.
[17:09] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Just gave me the money.
[17:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Let me put it in my savings account.
[17:12] \[SPEAKER_00\]: He said, Anthony, what are you, what are you afraid of?
[17:19] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I said, what?
[17:21] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Why are you afraid to enjoy a little bit, not all, a little bit of the fruit of your labor?
[17:36] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I got out the phone with them, and I quickly realized that my childhood trauma and what I saw growing up and what I experienced in my younger adult life made me fearful to make the right decisions and the fun decisions with my money that I was just putting everything up because I felt good seeing that I had six figures in my savings account, but y'all
[18:10] \[SPEAKER_00\]: because fear, because the enemy was trying to distract me.
[18:14] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Because the enemy didn't want me to get compound interest because he knew if I invested the way that I could, that my children would not start off the way that I started, that my family would not experience some of the trauma that I experienced.
[18:33] \[SPEAKER_00\]: because the enemy knew that if I can keep him in fear, he won't die, he won't give, he won't be generous because he wants to keep the money for himself so he doesn't feel like he's going backwards.
[18:48] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So when I got the 12 months inside of my high-year savings, I don't keep no more money in there.
[18:53] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I invest that money, man.
[18:54] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I throw that money away into real estate into index funds, ETS, my 401K here, my separate account,
[19:04] \[SPEAKER_00\]: because I am determined to make sure that when I get to 60, I don't have to do nothing.
[19:13] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I am determined to make sure that when I get married, I was talking to one of my friends just the other day and she was telling me how stressed she is and how tired she is.
[19:22] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And I said, well, says, you need to get married.
[19:25] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You've dated some good men in the past.
[19:26] \[SPEAKER_00\]: You are a beautiful and gorgeous woman.
[19:30] \[SPEAKER_00\]: If you can partner with a healthy man, he should take some of that burden off of you.
[19:34] \[SPEAKER_00\]: And I want to be that person from my spouse.
[19:39] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I want to be that person from my children that I carried all the weight that before God gave me them, I was thinking about them.
[19:52] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That I wasn't operating in fear before I met them.
[19:57] \[SPEAKER_00\]: that I was operating in wisdom and was sound counsel.
[20:03] \[SPEAKER_00\]: That I was operating with then strategy and just trust in this strategy that God has given me.
[20:11] \[SPEAKER_00\]: So remember, there's five things.
[20:17] \[SPEAKER_00\]: I'd okay as to lose his to inflation.
[20:21] \[SPEAKER_00\]: Your real number is three months, six months or nine to 12 months of your net pay.
[20:27] \[SPEAKER_00\]: This is caculated, this is not guessed.
