[0:08] Speaker 1: No playoffs in twenty twenty five led to changes entering
[0:11] Speaker 1: the twenty six season. Four Detroit Lions quarterback Jerry Goff
[0:14] Speaker 1: joined us to explain how they plan to get their
[0:17] Speaker 1: groove back in Motown. Oh, and we can't stop talking
[0:20] Speaker 1: about quarterbacks or the teams that haven't settled on theirs.
[0:24] Speaker 2: With the true.
[0:25] Speaker 1: Competition set to begin as camp's open, our experts break
[0:29] Speaker 1: down the battles. That's right, we're going head over heels
[0:35] Speaker 1: as we get ready for the insiders or are.
[0:38] Speaker 2: We welcome the Monday?
[0:39] Speaker 1: Here on the insiders, we moved one day closer to
[0:42] Speaker 1: the trainee camp. I have joined by our insiders, Ian
[0:45] Speaker 1: Rappidboard and Julia Bautista, who can't get enough of watching
[0:48] Speaker 1: Cam Scataboo do his thing. We'll get to him later
[0:52] Speaker 1: because new today, the Packers in defensive end Devonte Wide
[0:55] Speaker 1: have agreed the terms on a new three year, fifty
[0:58] Speaker 1: seven million dollar contract. According to Ian Rappaport, Whyott was
[1:02] Speaker 1: dunching the final.
[1:03] Speaker 2: Year of his rookie deal and the Packers' rookies.
[1:06] Speaker 1: They report to camp a week from today on July
[1:08] Speaker 1: twenty seventh, with the veterans arriving on the twenty eighth
[1:12] Speaker 1: and news.
[1:12] Speaker 2: Out of Seattle Seahawks.
[1:14] Speaker 1: Second year of safety Nick Eman war one of the
[1:16] Speaker 1: top young defenders in the NFL, will enter training camp
[1:19] Speaker 1: on the physically unable to perform lists a team and
[1:22] Speaker 1: outs today. Per rules, Eman Warry can be activated at
[1:26] Speaker 1: any point during camp when he is medically cleared.
[1:30] Speaker 2: All right, let's take a look.
[1:31] Speaker 1: At the teams that are going to be reporting to
[1:33] Speaker 1: training camp. Is he the Seahawks and Niners rookies already
[1:36] Speaker 1: getting to work, and a little bit later on the
[1:38] Speaker 1: full rosters for the Panthers and the Cardinals, we'll be
[1:43] Speaker 1: getting it going. Is they are the first teams to
[1:45] Speaker 1: kick off our preseason on the Pro Football Hall.
[1:48] Speaker 2: Of Fame Game.
[1:48] Speaker 1: And let's get back with Judy Batista and Ian Rappaport. Judy,
[1:52] Speaker 1: let's start with you and some of the training camp
[1:54] Speaker 1: storylines you're most interested in.
[1:58] Speaker 3: I'm actually interested in three two teams. One of them
[2:00] Speaker 3: was on that list of the teams that are opening soon.
[2:03] Speaker 3: Bill's Steelers, Ravens, all highly successful teams that have moved
[2:08] Speaker 3: on from longtime head coaches who'd had a ton of success.
[2:12] Speaker 4: At those places.
[2:13] Speaker 3: Two of them, of course, won Super Bowls for those teams,
[2:16] Speaker 3: Mike Tomlin and John Harbaugh, all three moving on two
[2:20] Speaker 3: of the teams going with rookie head coaches. I am
[2:24] Speaker 3: fascinated to see, first of all, how they put their
[2:27] Speaker 3: fingerprints on these teams, all of whom are built to
[2:30] Speaker 3: win right now. We're showing you the Pittsburgh Steelers, obviously
[2:32] Speaker 3: with a forty something quarterback in Aaron Rodgers, they are
[2:35] Speaker 3: trying to win right now. But the other two teams,
[2:38] Speaker 3: of course have League MVP level quarterbacks.
[2:41] Speaker 4: They are built to win right now.
[2:43] Speaker 3: These moves were made to get a new voice in
[2:46] Speaker 3: maybe to get some energy and to get them over
[2:48] Speaker 3: the hump.
[2:49] Speaker 4: They haven't been able to get.
[2:50] Speaker 3: Back to the super Bowl in Pittsburgh, and in Baltimore,
[2:53] Speaker 3: and of course in Buffalo, they haven't gotten to the
[2:56] Speaker 3: Super Bowl in the Sean mcdonought eres. So it's going
[2:59] Speaker 3: to be interesting to see how they put their fingerprints
[3:02] Speaker 3: on these franchises. It's a big roll of the dice
[3:05] Speaker 3: by ownership to break up with longtime head coaches who
[3:08] Speaker 3: were consistently getting you to the playoffs. But we've seen
[3:11] Speaker 3: it before. New coaches bring new energy and new messages.
[3:15] Speaker 3: Is that going to be enough to get these three
[3:17] Speaker 3: teams over the top?
[3:20] Speaker 5: So many fascinating storylines. Is we get into training camp
[3:23] Speaker 5: and I want to focus here, Judy on the quarterbacks,
[3:26] Speaker 5: no surprise, and I'll start with the team that is
[3:29] Speaker 5: having their players report first. That is the Arizona Cardinals
[3:32] Speaker 5: on the twenty second veterans and rookies both reported. As
[3:36] Speaker 5: of right now, the Arizona Cardinals do not have their
[3:39] Speaker 5: starting quarterback under a contract that he would want to
[3:43] Speaker 5: play under. Jacoby Brissette has been over the course of
[3:45] Speaker 5: the last several months of rolling in contract negotiations with
[3:48] Speaker 5: the team, trying to get a little more money considering
[3:51] Speaker 5: he is going into the season as the starter. Sutainly
[3:54] Speaker 5: some drama there because if he is not there to
[3:56] Speaker 5: take the first team reps, is Carson Becks who could
[4:00] Speaker 5: possibly challenge him? And how much do those reps help? Meanwhile,
[4:04] Speaker 5: for the Minnesota Vikings, no doubt one of the biggest
[4:07] Speaker 5: storylines of all of training camp. They have their quarterback
[4:10] Speaker 5: battle as well as Kyler Murray is a JJ McCarthy
[4:14] Speaker 5: that is going to be going on throughout camp, through
[4:16] Speaker 5: the preseason games, right up to the start of the
[4:19] Speaker 5: season obviously has wide ranging ramifications for the organization, but
[4:24] Speaker 5: who ends up being their starter will go a long
[4:26] Speaker 5: way determining just how these Minnesota Vikings end up doing.
[4:30] Speaker 1: Yeah, that's gonna be one of the top story lines
[4:32] Speaker 1: all through training camp all bet we see the games
[4:34] Speaker 1: being played in week one. I want to bring things
[4:37] Speaker 1: back closer to Los Angeles because they are two high
[4:41] Speaker 1: level young pass rushers who are up for contract extensions.
[4:45] Speaker 2: And let's start with the Chargers. And that's as Tully
[4:47] Speaker 2: twea Polo to who is.
[4:49] Speaker 1: Just coming off a thirteen and a half sack season. Yes,
[4:53] Speaker 1: he's playing alongside Khalil Mack, but he is eligible for.
[4:56] Speaker 2: A contract extension.
[4:57] Speaker 1: There have been conversations, we're getting closer to the opening
[5:01] Speaker 1: of training camp, nothing has been finalized.
[5:04] Speaker 2: Tua Polo too, only twenty three years old.
[5:07] Speaker 1: Seems like he's of the age and of the ascension
[5:10] Speaker 1: to be a defensive pillar the Chargers.
[5:12] Speaker 2: Would like to build around. Now let's go over to
[5:15] Speaker 2: the Rams.
[5:16] Speaker 1: Yes, the offseason conversation deservedly has been around their acquisition
[5:20] Speaker 1: of Miles Garrett, but Byron Young, another third year player,
[5:24] Speaker 1: is coming off of a twelve sacks season. He is
[5:27] Speaker 1: somebody in three years who has twenty seven and a
[5:29] Speaker 1: half sacks, and with Garrett on the other side, those
[5:32] Speaker 1: numbers could continue to go up because.
[5:34] Speaker 2: The attention that's paid to Garrett.
[5:36] Speaker 1: One thing that could really hamper young and a big
[5:38] Speaker 1: deal is he's twenty eight years old.
[5:41] Speaker 2: That's kind of old for a third year player.
[5:44] Speaker 1: But that is going to be something to watch going
[5:46] Speaker 1: into camp and through camp because these are two ascending players,
[5:50] Speaker 1: Judy and Ian. We will be back with you a
[5:53] Speaker 1: little bit later, and let's go to Detroit where their
[5:56] Speaker 1: rookies report to training camp Saturday, and the Veterans court
[6:00] Speaker 1: on July twenty eighth, and their quarterback Jared Goff, has
[6:05] Speaker 1: something to say about how things could go as camp
[6:08] Speaker 1: gets going.
[6:10] Speaker 2: It's be great.
[6:10] Speaker 6: Let's go, buddy, it'll be great.
[6:11] Speaker 2: Let's go. Let's go to work today. Fellows back on track,
[6:14] Speaker 2: let's go.
[6:14] Speaker 7: What was that?
[6:19] Speaker 6: Big?
[6:19] Speaker 2: And no one's coming up? Tell us make some plays.
[6:22] Speaker 2: Let's go. This is the one here. Golf turns gives
[6:24] Speaker 2: to Gibbs, Bill, Gilly big, what do you got?
[6:27] Speaker 5: Gets lit school little still little still blue, Lil score,
[6:32] Speaker 5: LIBI still goody.
[6:33] Speaker 2: That is one of my favorite wins of all time?
[6:38] Speaker 1: All right, Jared here joining me in Stacey Dales and Jared,
[6:41] Speaker 1: I just want to get kind of right to it.
[6:43] Speaker 1: How did not making the postseason last year impact the
[6:46] Speaker 1: approach heading into training camp?
[6:49] Speaker 7: Yeah, I think it made us really hungry, really, it
[6:51] Speaker 7: really did. And even though we had a winning record
[6:53] Speaker 7: and we were nine and eight, it wasn't good enough.
[6:56] Speaker 7: We came in fourth place in our division, and it's
[6:58] Speaker 7: it's really you know, we came up in a lot
[7:00] Speaker 7: of ways, and finding a way to win our division
[7:02] Speaker 7: first again, get back on top of our division we
[7:04] Speaker 7: had won it two years prior, and finding a way
[7:07] Speaker 7: to win that division and then see what happens when
[7:09] Speaker 7: you get to the playoffs. But yeah, we're hungry, man,
[7:11] Speaker 7: we really are, and certainly excited to get after it.
[7:16] Speaker 8: Jared, The relationship between the play caller and the quarterback,
[7:19] Speaker 8: as you know firsthand, is so essential. What is that
[7:22] Speaker 8: relationship like with Drew Petson, your new offensive coordinator, and
[7:27] Speaker 8: how you share ideas and create concepts within this offense.
[7:31] Speaker 6: Yeah, he's been awesome.
[7:32] Speaker 7: He really has been great to work with and I
[7:34] Speaker 7: really want to try to be an extension of him
[7:38] Speaker 7: on the field, and then hopefully he's an extension of
[7:39] Speaker 7: me when coming up with plays throughout the week and
[7:42] Speaker 7: having ideas. So it's trying to be on the same
[7:44] Speaker 7: page at all times and constant communication. That's what I
[7:47] Speaker 7: try to do with him is just talk with him
[7:49] Speaker 7: as much as possible, and I know he's doing the
[7:50] Speaker 7: same with me, but making sure we're on the same
[7:52] Speaker 7: page and understanding each other to the fullest extent. And
[7:55] Speaker 7: there will be growing pains, there always is, But up
[7:58] Speaker 7: to this point, man, it's been really, really good and I've.
[8:00] Speaker 6: Had a lot of fun working with him.
[8:04] Speaker 8: You have so many weapons on this offense. We know
[8:06] Speaker 8: the dual threat powerhouse that Jamira Gibbs is'm and Ross
[8:10] Speaker 8: Saint Brown three straight all pro seasons. What is it like,
[8:15] Speaker 8: Jared working with him as your go to guy and
[8:19] Speaker 8: understanding he's just always there for you, and the daily
[8:22] Speaker 8: experience of training with him.
[8:24] Speaker 7: Yeah, he's the best, he really is. And you know,
[8:27] Speaker 7: for I think he's the best wide receiver in the league.
[8:30] Speaker 7: I think he's the only guy who catches with it,
[8:32] Speaker 7: runs with it, blocks does everything. He can do it
[8:35] Speaker 7: all and it's it's a lot of fun to work
[8:37] Speaker 7: with him and to play with him and the way he.
[8:39] Speaker 6: Works in practice, he makes he makes me want to
[8:42] Speaker 6: get him the ball.
[8:42] Speaker 7: He makes me want to reward him for all his
[8:45] Speaker 7: hard work, and you know it makes everyone around him
[8:48] Speaker 7: work harder. And he's just such a great teammate, great player,
[8:51] Speaker 7: great person, and I love playing with him.
[8:54] Speaker 1: Like you said, the numbers back up the fact that
[8:56] Speaker 1: he's one of, if not the best wide.
[8:57] Speaker 2: Receivers in the NFL.
[8:58] Speaker 1: Why don't you think he gets more acclaim when people
[9:01] Speaker 1: talk about the best wide receivers.
[9:05] Speaker 2: I don't know, man, that's your guys' show. Okay, Yeah,
[9:09] Speaker 2: it's on our lab. Well done, Jerry, I'm doing my part. Yeah, exactly.
[9:12] Speaker 2: We do what we can do.
[9:13] Speaker 1: Hey, but Jared, also, you know we see the pizza
[9:16] Speaker 1: boxes behind you for little seizures.
[9:17] Speaker 2: Is what can you tell us about that?
[9:19] Speaker 6: Yeah?
[9:19] Speaker 7: I'm honored I was chosen to kind of represent Detroit
[9:22] Speaker 7: in that way and to be with the Little Caesars now.
[9:24] Speaker 7: I've been seeing them across Detroit for so long and
[9:28] Speaker 7: being able to partner with them today and do this
[9:30] Speaker 7: campaign will be a lot of fun and I'm excited
[9:32] Speaker 7: about it.
[9:33] Speaker 1: All right, man, Well, good luck we'll talk to you soon, Jered, congratulation.
[9:37] Speaker 6: Thank you. I'll get you some pizza soon.
[9:39] Speaker 2: Okay, excellent, I'm down all right.
[9:42] Speaker 1: I think Jared pipluats pineapple on his pizza too. Another
[9:45] Speaker 1: storyline to watch heading into the twenty twenty six NFL
[9:48] Speaker 1: season is whether the World Cup reignites the debate over
[9:52] Speaker 1: playing surfaces. Spain's one zere A victory over Argentina in
[9:56] Speaker 1: the FIFA World Cup Final at Metlive Stadium yesterday once
[9:59] Speaker 1: again and put the spotlight on natural grass for the tournament.
[10:03] Speaker 1: Fever required MetLife and several other NFL stadiums with artificial
[10:08] Speaker 1: turf to install temporary natural grass fields, reinforcing its long
[10:12] Speaker 1: standing mandate the world the World Cup matches be played
[10:15] Speaker 1: on grass. Some NFL players have voiced their opinions on
[10:20] Speaker 1: social media. Here's George Kittle, grass still looks great. Let's
[10:23] Speaker 1: use grass instead of turf, Jonathan Taylor natural grass is
[10:27] Speaker 1: an out of reach prioritizing players shouldn't be either. We
[10:31] Speaker 1: are worth the cost. There's NFL Field director Nick Pappis
[10:36] Speaker 1: back in April with Judy Batista at the league meeting,
[10:39] Speaker 1: addressing this matter specifically, We've got the.
[10:43] Speaker 3: World Cup coming to the United States this summer, they're
[10:45] Speaker 3: obviously using a bunch of NFL stadiums, so there are
[10:49] Speaker 3: grass fields in those stadiums, and.
[10:51] Speaker 4: Of course everybody wants to know, why can't we just
[10:53] Speaker 4: keep those grass fields?
[10:54] Speaker 2: Nick?
[10:54] Speaker 9: Yeah, if ever it was so simple, I think, you know,
[10:57] Speaker 9: the biggest thing you can to remember about the World
[10:59] Speaker 9: Cup tournament is that it's got exclusivity in these buildings, right,
[11:02] Speaker 9: And I think that's one of the big pieces. The
[11:04] Speaker 9: only thing that's going to see those playing services is
[11:06] Speaker 9: going to be World Cup matches, and that's not a
[11:10] Speaker 9: normal usage of our venues. The other thing you got
[11:13] Speaker 9: to consider is the duration of time. It's only going
[11:16] Speaker 9: to be what June and July, and then we'll see
[11:17] Speaker 9: those those fields exit our stadium. So it's a short
[11:20] Speaker 9: term option. It may work well for the World Cup,
[11:24] Speaker 9: it may work well for their athletes, who are very
[11:26] Speaker 9: different than our athletes. The demands of the game are
[11:28] Speaker 9: also very different, and I think just making sure that
[11:31] Speaker 9: that is even a viable option for an NFL venue.
[11:34] Speaker 2: Is something that still needs to be determined.
[11:37] Speaker 1: Yeah, don't look like anything's going to be changing soon,
[11:39] Speaker 1: but look at some of the MetLife Stadium.
[11:41] Speaker 2: Notable injuries on the artificial surface.
[11:44] Speaker 1: You're saying Aaron Rodgers, Malik Neighbors ACL and the Bosa ACL,
[11:48] Speaker 1: Jimmy Garoppolo Ankle Sterling Shepherd had two injuries on that
[11:53] Speaker 1: MetLife Stadium field. So let's bring back Judy Batista and
[11:57] Speaker 1: Ian Rapid for wrap, Ian Rappaport for the Sorry about that.
[12:00] Speaker 1: I but Judy, this really has reignited the conversation. But
[12:05] Speaker 1: will it reignite any changes?
[12:09] Speaker 4: I don't think so.
[12:10] Speaker 3: You heard Nick Pappas explain, like NFL stadiums are not
[12:14] Speaker 3: like what FIFA was demanding. FIFA demanded nothing else go
[12:19] Speaker 3: on in those stadiums for weeks ahead of time. The
[12:21] Speaker 3: grass was laid down like ten weeks before the World
[12:25] Speaker 3: Cup even began, and then, of course the World Cup
[12:27] Speaker 3: has been going on for five or six weeks with
[12:29] Speaker 3: nothing else happening at that stadium. Well, like MetLife Stadium,
[12:32] Speaker 3: for example, has stuff going on constantly, not just giants
[12:35] Speaker 3: and jets, games, big concerts, tractor polls, all kinds of events.
[12:40] Speaker 3: So it's hard to imagine that that grass field would
[12:43] Speaker 3: hold up very well under all of those conditions. And
[12:46] Speaker 3: that's the case in most NFL stadiums. Now, there are
[12:49] Speaker 3: NFL stadiums that have grass, some better than others.
[12:53] Speaker 6: Right.
[12:53] Speaker 3: There have been complaints about the grass in Pittsburgh and Chicago,
[12:56] Speaker 3: not surprisingly their climates are tough like New York is.
[13:00] Speaker 3: But in Florida, for example, the Miami Dolphins own their
[13:03] Speaker 3: own sub farm and they replace the natural grass regularly
[13:07] Speaker 3: because that stadium hard rock does host a whole variety
[13:11] Speaker 3: of events, So you.
[13:13] Speaker 4: Could go that route. Certainly, there is an economic consideration
[13:16] Speaker 4: here for a lot of teams.
[13:18] Speaker 3: The question is are you better off with bad grass
[13:21] Speaker 3: than a good artificial turf. The other thing to keep
[13:24] Speaker 3: in mind is this conversation is going to.
[13:26] Speaker 4: Continue to go on.
[13:27] Speaker 3: There are eventually going to be CBA negotiations between the
[13:30] Speaker 3: Players Association and the league, and the Players Association could
[13:35] Speaker 3: certainly make a decision to press this issue during those
[13:38] Speaker 3: negotiations and then you see if those two sides can
[13:41] Speaker 3: come to a deal.
[13:43] Speaker 5: And that's really going to be fascinating, Judy, because it's
[13:45] Speaker 5: one thing to have a grassroots social media push, which
[13:47] Speaker 5: seems to be going on now from the NFLP now
[13:50] Speaker 5: that their leader JC Tretterer is in charge. And really
[13:54] Speaker 5: kind of the first grassroo movements we've.
[13:56] Speaker 2: Seen under the new leadership.
[13:57] Speaker 5: It's another thing to say during CBA negotiations that we're
[14:01] Speaker 5: going to put our foot down on grass versus turf,
[14:03] Speaker 5: when really there are other issues, monetary issues that generally
[14:08] Speaker 5: kind of come to the forefront and generate much more
[14:11] Speaker 5: of the spotlight. This issue is not going away. The
[14:14] Speaker 5: turf is getting much better. I think that's one of
[14:16] Speaker 5: the things that the NFL has talked about part of
[14:19] Speaker 5: the problem here, Judy, You know this as well as anyone.
[14:22] Speaker 5: The NFL has presented the evidence that turf is really
[14:25] Speaker 5: not worse than grass on any sort of noticeable level.
[14:30] Speaker 5: For whatever reason, people and especially players don't seem to
[14:34] Speaker 5: believe it. Getting everyone to understand the real actual evidence
[14:38] Speaker 5: will certainly help in this matter.
[14:40] Speaker 2: Yeah, you know, there's that evidence right there.
[14:42] Speaker 1: But again, with the players are saying the grass actually
[14:45] Speaker 1: feels better on their bodies, that's something that should be
[14:48] Speaker 1: held into account. And we do know a lot of
[14:50] Speaker 1: teams have added grass practice facilities even if they play
[14:54] Speaker 1: in their games on turf.
[14:56] Speaker 2: All right, Judy and Ian, thank you so much.
[15:00] Speaker 1: Kamara down with the Saints back for another season, Another
[15:04] Speaker 1: former Saints legend running back is going to be here
[15:07] Speaker 1: to talk a little bit more about Camara and his
[15:10] Speaker 1: impact in New Orleans. I know, yeah, Cam'scattaboo. Over the weekend,
[15:16] Speaker 1: you had to flipping out.
[15:17] Speaker 2: Oops. I think hopefully we stick the landing a little
[15:20] Speaker 2: bit better than that.
[15:21] Speaker 1: We come back here on the Insiders a little bit
[15:25] Speaker 1: more discussion.
[15:32] Speaker 2: Welcome back to the Insider's role.
[15:34] Speaker 1: Over the weekend, Giants running back Cam Scattaboo gave the
[15:37] Speaker 1: fans a bit of a scare when he attempted to
[15:40] Speaker 1: backflip and fell at fanatics Fest.
[15:43] Speaker 2: Didn't quite stick to landing, but no need to worry here.
[15:45] Speaker 1: Scatabou made sure to let everyone know afterwards that he's
[15:49] Speaker 1: just fine.
[15:51] Speaker 2: So when I took off, I was in mid air, like,
[15:53] Speaker 2: holy cow, I'm not going to land this. I'm way
[15:55] Speaker 2: too high landed. But it had too much cushion.
[15:59] Speaker 3: It wasn't a stiff, firm ground, so it's wind of
[16:01] Speaker 3: kind of like went back safely.
[16:03] Speaker 6: Landed, got back up, it was good to go.
[16:06] Speaker 2: So nothing came out from that.
[16:07] Speaker 5: I'm perfectly fine, nothing happened, We're.
[16:10] Speaker 2: Good, okay.
[16:12] Speaker 1: And Jueyt of course he had to reassure he was
[16:15] Speaker 1: reassures he was good because he's coming off of a
[16:17] Speaker 1: broken tibia and an ankle injury that cost him a
[16:20] Speaker 1: big part of his rookie season last year.
[16:24] Speaker 2: Judy, I saw your reaction on social media.
[16:28] Speaker 1: How do you think the Giants themselves felt about Skataboo
[16:31] Speaker 1: saying being not quite risk averse.
[16:36] Speaker 3: I think the Giants probably realized this is part of
[16:39] Speaker 3: the Cam Stataboo package. If you remember, he actually stuck
[16:43] Speaker 3: the landing on a back flip during a charity softball
[16:47] Speaker 3: event with his teammates a few months ago, and John
[16:49] Speaker 3: Harbaugh joke during mini camp like he told him they
[16:52] Speaker 3: maybe not do the backflip so much anymore.
[16:54] Speaker 4: So maybe that message needs to be delivered. Listen, Cam
[16:57] Speaker 4: Scataboo is a.
[16:58] Speaker 3: Big part of this Team's going to be a big
[17:01] Speaker 3: part of this offense, assuming that he is fully healthy
[17:04] Speaker 3: coming out of training camp. They want to run the ball,
[17:07] Speaker 3: they want to be bullies, they want to dominate the
[17:09] Speaker 3: line of scrimmage. They've got a pretty good running back room.
[17:12] Speaker 3: It's him Tyrone, Tracy Singletary is still there. They got
[17:15] Speaker 3: a bunch of good running backs. They need him to
[17:18] Speaker 3: be healthy. They need him to be to bring the
[17:21] Speaker 3: electricity that he brings. I thought his relationship with Jackson
[17:25] Speaker 3: Dart really powered the movement last year where you saw
[17:28] Speaker 3: sparks for the future. Jackson Dart, by the way, is
[17:31] Speaker 3: a really good friend and teammate. He said, Wow, that
[17:34] Speaker 3: was really great burst that he saw a good explosion.
[17:36] Speaker 3: So this is part of what you get with Camp Scataby.
[17:39] Speaker 3: You just have to hope he can stay in one
[17:41] Speaker 3: piece and he can bring that energy and intensity to
[17:44] Speaker 3: the field.
[17:46] Speaker 5: Yeah, this is really the nine Missionnario in so so
[17:49] Speaker 5: so many ways. Jude I was spending time with the
[17:50] Speaker 5: general manager earlier this summer. You got a call from
[17:53] Speaker 5: someone very high up at his organization, and the first
[17:57] Speaker 5: thought that this person had seeing the phone call was like,
[17:59] Speaker 5: oh my god, because really there's no reason to call
[18:03] Speaker 5: a general manager during the summer. Ever, if there's something
[18:07] Speaker 5: like cool happening, just text, because any phone call you
[18:10] Speaker 5: know it's bad, right, And so if Joe Shane is
[18:14] Speaker 5: getting a call about Camps Scattabou hurting himself doing a
[18:17] Speaker 5: backflip at some Fanatics event, that is all bad. The
[18:21] Speaker 5: other part of this is so much of what teams
[18:24] Speaker 5: want to do during the summer is literally just get
[18:26] Speaker 5: to training him. Don't anything stupid happen, keep everyone clear
[18:30] Speaker 5: out of trouble, no issues, keep everyone healthy.
[18:34] Speaker 2: Just get them through training camp.
[18:35] Speaker 5: And in an unforced era, almost camp Scattaboo nearly made
[18:40] Speaker 5: that a complete disaster. Everyone just stay on your feet.
[18:43] Speaker 5: We got like a week to go that you could.
[18:44] Speaker 6: Just go back to football and do whatever you want.
[18:46] Speaker 1: Guys the window guys who suffered big injuries while they
[18:49] Speaker 1: are jet skiing, while they're all playing basketball, things like
[18:52] Speaker 1: that that have enabled them not to get to training camp.
[18:55] Speaker 1: Had he stuck the landing, I think we would have
[18:57] Speaker 1: been okay. But he did cause a little bit bit
[19:00] Speaker 1: of a start.
[19:00] Speaker 5: All right, a week or so to go intil the
[19:04] Speaker 5: Green Bay Packers reports to training camp and they are
[19:06] Speaker 5: doing some work, as they have done really for much
[19:09] Speaker 5: of this offseason. They're making sure that some of their
[19:11] Speaker 5: young stars get paid. The latest defensive lineman, Devonte Wide,
[19:17] Speaker 5: gets a three year, fifty seven million dollar contract extension,
[19:21] Speaker 5: twenty million dollars in a signing bonus, and a deal
[19:24] Speaker 5: done by Win Sports. Devonte White is coming off the
[19:27] Speaker 5: best season of his career, overcoming a broken leg at
[19:31] Speaker 5: the end, but still, I mean really looks like the
[19:33] Speaker 5: butting star that the Packers hoped he would be, which
[19:36] Speaker 5: now means, Judy, there is one more star for the
[19:39] Speaker 5: green Bay Packers that still is doing a contract extension.
[19:42] Speaker 5: Tucker Craft coming up a touring ACL surely now the
[19:45] Speaker 5: target for Green Bay. The hope is at some point
[19:48] Speaker 5: before the season he will be the latest Packer to
[19:51] Speaker 5: cash in on a huge deal, Judy.
[19:56] Speaker 3: Another team getting ready to report Cleveland. Brown's veterans are
[19:58] Speaker 3: reporting July twenty and one of the biggest storylines of
[20:01] Speaker 3: the summer is their quarterback competition and now healthy Deshaun
[20:05] Speaker 3: Watson versus the incumbent second year quarterback Shador Sanders. Back
[20:09] Speaker 3: in the spring, Watson didn't seem to take an early league.
[20:12] Speaker 3: Then Shador made.
[20:13] Speaker 2: Up some ground.
[20:14] Speaker 3: Coach Todd Munkinhead originally wanted to name a starter coming
[20:17] Speaker 3: out of the spring.
[20:19] Speaker 4: He ended up not doing that.
[20:20] Speaker 3: He wanted to see more work, so training camp starts
[20:23] Speaker 3: with a true competition. Keep an eye on those joint
[20:25] Speaker 3: practices and preseason games. Here's Shador on the state of
[20:29] Speaker 3: play in Cleveland.
[20:31] Speaker 10: Yeah, I would say it's the same thing that we've
[20:33] Speaker 10: been saying from day one. You know, we're both trying
[20:35] Speaker 10: to be the best version of ourselves we could be,
[20:38] Speaker 10: so we're not going to let anything get in between
[20:40] Speaker 10: of that. So it's a level of respect you know
[20:43] Speaker 10: that we all in the quarterback room have for each other,
[20:47] Speaker 10: and we're not really emotional when it comes to things
[20:49] Speaker 10: that we can't control. We mainly focus on and thrive
[20:52] Speaker 10: on getting better and the work every day.
[20:55] Speaker 2: So if I.
[20:56] Speaker 10: Like something doing, I ask if he looks up like
[20:58] Speaker 10: some I do it, and I asked, like is conversation
[21:01] Speaker 10: and that's what's most effective.
[21:04] Speaker 2: All right, let's bring in Mark Rowson.
[21:06] Speaker 1: Stacy dials for more on the quarterback battles to watch
[21:09] Speaker 1: heading into.
[21:10] Speaker 2: Camp, and Mark, let's start right there in Cleveland. What
[21:12] Speaker 2: about that competition.
[21:15] Speaker 11: Well, look, as a personnel apartment, you always want the
[21:18] Speaker 11: best player to win the job, to give you the
[21:20] Speaker 11: best chance to win, but you also have to take
[21:22] Speaker 11: in effect what you have invested in these players. And
[21:25] Speaker 11: for the Browns That'sted a fifth round pick in Shador Sanders,
[21:30] Speaker 11: and they have invested Stacy two hundred and thirty three
[21:33] Speaker 11: million and counting for Deshaun Watson. So if all things
[21:37] Speaker 11: are equal throughout training camp. If it is a true
[21:40] Speaker 11: open competition, or if they haven't already know that Deshaun's
[21:44] Speaker 11: going to be the guy, then I would think they
[21:46] Speaker 11: have to lean to Deshaun Watson to be the guy,
[21:49] Speaker 11: just because of how much they have invested. Shador a
[21:51] Speaker 11: lot younger, of course, has time, so at his best.
[21:55] Speaker 11: Of course, DeShawn Watson was a top five pick. We
[21:57] Speaker 11: haven't seen that in a long long time. Shaudor showed
[22:00] Speaker 11: the flashes last year. Stacey needs more consistency. But if
[22:03] Speaker 11: all else is equal, I gotta figure they got to
[22:06] Speaker 11: go with the Shan is the guy.
[22:09] Speaker 8: Yeah, and I think he's a hair ahead right now.
[22:11] Speaker 8: If you talk to people there in Cleveland, listen, Todd
[22:13] Speaker 8: Munkin was brought in to fix a problem. He was
[22:15] Speaker 8: a former quarterback and he was brought in to fix
[22:18] Speaker 8: not only this offense, but this quarterback issue.
[22:20] Speaker 4: It's a carousel.
[22:21] Speaker 8: It's been one there in Cleveland since twenty twenty thirteen,
[22:25] Speaker 8: different starting quarterbacks, and so here he comes to fix
[22:29] Speaker 8: the thirtieth rank total offense in terms of yards, thirty
[22:32] Speaker 8: first in scoring, they were worst in yards per play,
[22:36] Speaker 8: and Shador Sanders has had a very good offseason. Remember
[22:39] Speaker 8: back to back achilles injuries, those ruptures. Hasn't played essentially
[22:43] Speaker 8: game football since January of twenty five, but he's been
[22:46] Speaker 8: really sound through the course of OTA's He's driving the ball,
[22:51] Speaker 8: as Todd Munkin has talked about, and he's shown signs
[22:53] Speaker 8: of that mobility that we became so accustomed to. Perhaps
[22:57] Speaker 8: this could be a potential comeback a Player of the
[23:00] Speaker 8: Year should.
[23:01] Speaker 2: He be the guy.
[23:02] Speaker 8: And again, by all reports out of Cleveland, he seems
[23:05] Speaker 8: to be a hairhead of Shador who also has shown
[23:08] Speaker 8: signs of improvement. He was their best passer last season, Steve,
[23:12] Speaker 8: and he has shown better decision making up the line
[23:14] Speaker 8: of scrimmage. But nonetheless, it'll be a quarterback competition. They
[23:17] Speaker 8: are splitting reps starting in training camp.
[23:20] Speaker 2: Whoever wins a job.
[23:21] Speaker 1: Let's not forget the Browns heavily invest in their offensive
[23:24] Speaker 1: line in free agency and in the draft, and they
[23:27] Speaker 1: got him two young wide receivers.
[23:29] Speaker 2: In the draft.
[23:30] Speaker 1: So whoever comes in is going to come in with
[23:33] Speaker 1: with an offensive staff to help support them. All right, Mark,
[23:35] Speaker 1: back to you, Minnesota. Another storyline with that quarterback battle,
[23:39] Speaker 1: give us some insight.
[23:42] Speaker 2: Yeah, well this is two guys in two different directions.
[23:44] Speaker 2: Kyler Murray trying to resurrect his career.
[23:47] Speaker 11: You know, people forget how well he played offensive Rookie
[23:49] Speaker 11: of the Year, a couple of Pro Bowls, and JJ
[23:52] Speaker 11: McCarthy just trying to prove he can be the guy.
[23:55] Speaker 2: And of course, again when I talked about the.
[23:57] Speaker 11: Investment in these players, if you try right up to
[24:01] Speaker 11: draft the quarterback with a tenth pick in the draft,
[24:03] Speaker 11: as the Vikings did for JJ McCarthy, you want him
[24:05] Speaker 11: to be your guy, not just for this year, but
[24:07] Speaker 11: for the long term. Of course, only playing paying Kyler
[24:10] Speaker 11: Murray one point three million just because of the past contract,
[24:14] Speaker 11: but they would want Jada to perform and looked well.
[24:17] Speaker 11: But I think Kyler Murray definitely gives them the best chance,
[24:19] Speaker 11: especially how nasty that defense is. Kyler, with still some playmaking,
[24:23] Speaker 11: just has to get a little bit more comfortable consistent
[24:25] Speaker 11: in what he does.
[24:26] Speaker 8: Stacy, Yeah, and it's an unusual situation for Kyler Murray.
[24:31] Speaker 8: He's always been the starter in his career and now
[24:33] Speaker 8: he's having to share fifty to fifty reps with JJ McCarthy.
[24:37] Speaker 8: And what does that mean, Well, you're getting less reps.
[24:39] Speaker 8: So if you were room for error, less room for
[24:42] Speaker 8: error what I'm looking for in training camp? A couple things. Shockingly,
[24:46] Speaker 8: the Minnesota Vikings finished dead last with thirty giveaways offensively
[24:51] Speaker 8: last season.
[24:51] Speaker 2: They went through a carousel of quarterback.
[24:53] Speaker 8: Speaking of carousel, JJ McCarthy, Carson Wentz, Max Brosmer, And
[24:59] Speaker 8: so you're looking that stability from the position. But who
[25:02] Speaker 8: values the football through training camp? Which is hard to
[25:05] Speaker 8: do because if you're Kyler Murray, you're learning a new offense.
[25:08] Speaker 8: There will be mistakes. But ultimately I have one player
[25:12] Speaker 8: circled that is Justin Jefferson. Mark you mentioned him career lows.
[25:16] Speaker 8: He's still at over one thousand receiving yards, but twelve
[25:19] Speaker 8: and a half yards per catch, two touchdowns receiving the football.
[25:25] Speaker 4: He was frustrated.
[25:26] Speaker 8: It was frustrating to watch which guy has the most
[25:30] Speaker 8: chemistry starting with Justin Jefferson. Those are things KOC is
[25:33] Speaker 8: going to be looking at.
[25:34] Speaker 1: Yeah, Bingos, Stacy, you nailed it right there. And look,
[25:36] Speaker 1: I don't think they brought Kyler Murray in there to
[25:38] Speaker 1: be a backup. If they had that much faith in
[25:41] Speaker 1: JJ McCarthy, they wouldn't have gone with a veteran like that,
[25:44] Speaker 1: as you said, someone who is used to being the guy.
[25:47] Speaker 1: Now one of the most intriguing quarterback battles down in Atlanta,
[25:51] Speaker 1: Mark Ross. Two lefties battling for the job and the
[25:55] Speaker 1: same type of scenario though, as you just explained in Minnesota.
[26:00] Speaker 11: Yeah, for sure, as I talked about in Minnesota, the
[26:03] Speaker 11: Atlanta Falcons took Michael Pennick with the eighth pick. In TUA,
[26:06] Speaker 11: they're basically have the bargain rate for him and for
[26:09] Speaker 11: Kevin Stefanski. You know, you talked about Stacey talked about
[26:12] Speaker 11: Cleveland the quarterback Caarra, so Kevin Stefanski was a part
[26:15] Speaker 11: of that. Now he comes down to Atlanta and still
[26:17] Speaker 11: doesn't have that quarterback stability.
[26:19] Speaker 2: And to me, this is going to come down to
[26:21] Speaker 2: who can stay out of the training room.
[26:23] Speaker 11: You know, Pennix is coming off the injury off, injured
[26:26] Speaker 11: in college, banged up here and now Tua. Of course
[26:29] Speaker 11: we know his long injury history as well, So who
[26:32] Speaker 11: can stay on the field is going to.
[26:34] Speaker 2: Win the job.
[26:35] Speaker 11: Of course, Pennix showed a lot of promise in his
[26:38] Speaker 11: short time there. Short stand especially that connection with Drake
[26:41] Speaker 11: London and the rejuvenated Kyle Pitts. You know, Tua at
[26:45] Speaker 11: his best, the timing throws, the throws in the middle,
[26:48] Speaker 11: getting the ball out, quick, quick decisions, and you just
[26:50] Speaker 11: didn't see that last year where he looked almost like
[26:53] Speaker 11: a shot fighter, and he just didn't have that same
[26:55] Speaker 11: sort of quick minding, quick release that he showed in
[26:58] Speaker 11: the past. So we'll see if he can regain the
[27:01] Speaker 11: early career or two.
[27:02] Speaker 2: Of at his best. But Penix, to me, definitely gives
[27:05] Speaker 2: him the best chance.
[27:06] Speaker 11: And of course the people here the front office will
[27:10] Speaker 11: want him to win the job because we've.
[27:14] Speaker 2: Spent the eighth pick of the draft on this guy. Stacey.
[27:18] Speaker 8: Yeah, and unfortunately, so coming back from that ACL that
[27:21] Speaker 8: left ACL the third mark of his career, he is
[27:24] Speaker 8: roughly by training camp, nine months into the rehabilitation process,
[27:29] Speaker 8: cleared to throw the football in March, but kind of
[27:31] Speaker 8: liking it to Patrick Mahomes right, got to ease him
[27:34] Speaker 8: back into this thing, which you would assume, regardless of
[27:37] Speaker 8: our opinions, that Tua is out there throwing the football
[27:40] Speaker 8: and in this sort of quick game screens play action
[27:42] Speaker 8: with Kevin Stefanski, moved the chains. He's got a quick
[27:46] Speaker 8: trigger now, I just want to give a shout out
[27:48] Speaker 8: to our research guy Lawan Jones.
[27:51] Speaker 2: Just a little nugget for our viewers.
[27:53] Speaker 8: Last time we had two lefties on a team in
[27:55] Speaker 8: the National Football League per la Quan nineteen ninety seven
[27:59] Speaker 8: with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Mark Brunell was the starter. Steve
[28:03] Speaker 8: Matthews was the third stringer. So cool storyline there. Whatever
[28:07] Speaker 8: man takes this job, ultimately this season, the backup will
[28:10] Speaker 8: be essential.
[28:11] Speaker 2: Mark.
[28:11] Speaker 8: You talked about it and alluded to the injury history.
[28:14] Speaker 8: This is a very important quarterback situation in Atlanta because
[28:18] Speaker 8: of that injury history, and the backup will matter regardless
[28:21] Speaker 8: of who the starter is.
[28:22] Speaker 2: That's right, guys.
[28:23] Speaker 1: I mean it might not matter who starts, might matters
[28:26] Speaker 1: who finishes. All right, Now, let's say you to Las Vegas.
[28:28] Speaker 2: Mark.
[28:29] Speaker 1: We know Clint Kubiak, new head coach of the Raiders
[28:31] Speaker 1: say the first not to start a rookie that he
[28:33] Speaker 1: needs to learn behind a veteran. You've got Kirk Cousins,
[28:36] Speaker 1: but you also got the top pick in Fernando Mendoza.
[28:41] Speaker 1: Change his mind for me. Why should Fernando be the guy? Yeah,
[28:45] Speaker 1: he has to be the guy.
[28:46] Speaker 11: Clint Kubeck took that job for Bernando Mendoza, not for
[28:48] Speaker 11: Kirk Cousins. And Fernando Mendoza with so much success and
[28:52] Speaker 11: so much playtime that he had in college, I.
[28:54] Speaker 2: Think he's ready, He's mature to do it.
[28:56] Speaker 11: And when you really look, the old school thinking was
[28:58] Speaker 11: let the guys sit, But the last few years, just
[29:00] Speaker 11: look at last year, even though cam Ward and Jackson
[29:03] Speaker 11: Dark and Tyler Shuck struggled some, that you showed the
[29:06] Speaker 11: promise and now going in a year two you feel
[29:08] Speaker 11: so much better about them having And then going two
[29:10] Speaker 11: years ago with Caleb Williams and Jaydon Daniels and Bo
[29:14] Speaker 11: Nix and Drake May who struggled year one, but then
[29:17] Speaker 11: year two went to the Super Bowl because he put
[29:19] Speaker 11: together and took those lumps.
[29:21] Speaker 2: And now they're ready to go.
[29:24] Speaker 8: Yeah, and Fernando will eventually be the guy, Mark and Steve,
[29:28] Speaker 8: but for now, Clint Kubiak, let's be clear, he's told
[29:31] Speaker 8: us Kirk Cousins is the guy, and maybe until his
[29:33] Speaker 8: performance and play deems otherwise. But hey, Kubiak was with
[29:37] Speaker 8: him in Minnesota a few years ago, helped coach him
[29:41] Speaker 8: to a Pro Bowl. Kirk Cousins and I want to
[29:44] Speaker 8: leave one thought overarching all of this. Tom Brady is
[29:48] Speaker 8: looking at this whole darn thing, and guess who he
[29:51] Speaker 8: had to sit behind there in New England, a guy
[29:53] Speaker 8: named Drew Bledsoe. So he's telling Fernando Mendoza, you better
[29:58] Speaker 8: be careful, you better retain, you better learn how to
[30:00] Speaker 8: not make the same mistake twice. And you've got a
[30:03] Speaker 8: leader in Kirk Cousins that you should be learning from.
[30:05] Speaker 8: And Kubiak has stated, Stephen Mark, we're counting on Kirk
[30:08] Speaker 8: Cousins to teach him, show him how it's done, show
[30:12] Speaker 8: him the ropes. But you still have Tom Brady over
[30:14] Speaker 8: there helping this young man too. He is surrounded by
[30:17] Speaker 8: brilliance in the game and will eventually be brilliant, you'd
[30:21] Speaker 8: think because of that.
[30:22] Speaker 1: Speaking of brilliant, Station Mark, you brought it to this segment,
[30:26] Speaker 1: we will be done talking about this again. That's gonna
[30:28] Speaker 1: be a theme all through training camp and we come back,
[30:31] Speaker 1: we're going to talk about another quarterback, Tyler Shupp down
[30:34] Speaker 1: in New Orleans as former Sage running back in their
[30:37] Speaker 1: current radio color analyst Duce McCallister.
[30:40] Speaker 2: Joins the show next.
[30:51] Speaker 1: Well, we've got a lot of excitement around the New
[30:53] Speaker 1: Orleans Saints heading into training camp, in part because our
[30:56] Speaker 1: ian Rappaport reported Alvin, the veteran.
[31:00] Speaker 2: Running back whose status was a little up in the air, has.
[31:03] Speaker 1: Reworked his contract to be back in the Saints backfield
[31:08] Speaker 1: in twenty twenty six. He'll be joined by newcomer Travis
[31:11] Speaker 1: atn So. For more on that backfield and more Saints talk,
[31:15] Speaker 1: let's bring in former Saints running back Deuce McCallister, who
[31:18] Speaker 1: also does radio for the Saints.
[31:20] Speaker 2: Deuce, always good seeing you, And let's start.
[31:23] Speaker 1: Right there about the potential of this backfield. Alvin Kamara.
[31:27] Speaker 1: We know the versatility he brings, but now they pair
[31:30] Speaker 1: him with Travis Hen what can those two do in tandem.
[31:36] Speaker 6: Well, you're really pleased that Alvin was able to get
[31:38] Speaker 6: the deal done. And you know with the organization, anytime
[31:41] Speaker 6: that you have a player and a team trying to
[31:44] Speaker 6: work through a contract, that's always a source spot. But
[31:48] Speaker 6: you're happy to have that kind of out of the way.
[31:50] Speaker 6: And now you look, you want to get back to football,
[31:53] Speaker 6: and so Alvin will tell you that, hey, look he
[31:55] Speaker 6: still has something left in the tank. And being able
[31:58] Speaker 6: to partner with a you know, hopefully that gives him
[32:01] Speaker 6: that one to two duo that this offense has really
[32:05] Speaker 6: missed the last couple of years. I mean when you
[32:07] Speaker 6: go and looking up, you haven't had a ton of explosives.
[32:10] Speaker 6: As something that Travis can add to that mix and
[32:14] Speaker 6: take some of that pressure off from just having to
[32:17] Speaker 6: be the league guy. I think that definitely him as well.
[32:21] Speaker 9: Well.
[32:21] Speaker 1: Again, I met a lot of excitement around the Saints.
[32:23] Speaker 1: I think part of it's with this offense because of
[32:26] Speaker 1: quarterback Tyler Shuck Duce. You were there, you saw him
[32:28] Speaker 1: the last two thirds of the season last year. He
[32:31] Speaker 1: added a complete new element to this offense, completed a
[32:35] Speaker 1: high number of his passes, especially in that intermediate range.
[32:39] Speaker 1: What are the expectations for Shock going into the season.
[32:43] Speaker 6: Well, I think when you talk about Tyler, you just
[32:45] Speaker 6: want to see some growth. I think that's probably the
[32:47] Speaker 6: most important part when you talk about not only from
[32:49] Speaker 6: a leadership standpoint, but you have to be able to
[32:52] Speaker 6: do it on the field. And you can talk about
[32:53] Speaker 6: the last half of that season how they were able
[32:56] Speaker 6: to put some wins together. Him go out there get
[32:59] Speaker 6: some experience. But now I see some growth from that
[33:01] Speaker 6: stage and from that standpoint, they the Saints have done
[33:05] Speaker 6: a really good job. You've added to the offensive line
[33:07] Speaker 6: with Edward gi We're able to get some speed on
[33:09] Speaker 6: the outside, and I think that was probably the most
[33:11] Speaker 6: critical thing for this offense. You know, one being able
[33:13] Speaker 6: to run the football, take some pressure off of that
[33:16] Speaker 6: young quarterback, but then be able to add to that
[33:18] Speaker 6: not only tight end room offensive line, but on the
[33:21] Speaker 6: outside as far as receiver being able to have some
[33:23] Speaker 6: explosive plays. That's what this offense needs. It's always hard
[33:27] Speaker 6: to grind out a ten to twelve play drive in
[33:29] Speaker 6: the NFL. If you can have a couple of guys
[33:32] Speaker 6: that can take the top off of that defense, that
[33:34] Speaker 6: definitely helps you.
[33:35] Speaker 1: Yeah, drafted Jordan Tyson in the first round, the wide
[33:37] Speaker 1: receiver to go with Chris Alave. You got two guys
[33:40] Speaker 1: who can really go. Let's go also go revisit a
[33:43] Speaker 1: little bit of retaining a veteran cam. Jordan decided to
[33:47] Speaker 1: sign the one year deal to come back. How important
[33:50] Speaker 1: is that coming off a ten and a half sack
[33:52] Speaker 1: season to get him back in the mix of a
[33:54] Speaker 1: defense that was much better than people give it credit for.
[33:59] Speaker 6: Yeah, rich better and I think you know, for Cam
[34:01] Speaker 6: it was an opportunity to kind of finish some things
[34:03] Speaker 6: that he had started. You know, he had some opportunities
[34:05] Speaker 6: to go to some other places, but for him just
[34:08] Speaker 6: being able to talk to him, you know, not only
[34:10] Speaker 6: wanting to finish finish his career in New Orleans, but
[34:13] Speaker 6: I think the aspect of the wife and kids, you know,
[34:16] Speaker 6: just missing some of that home feeling for them and
[34:19] Speaker 6: just being able to say, Okay, you know, I have
[34:22] Speaker 6: a good situation here. I know, and I understand the defense.
[34:25] Speaker 6: I know, and I understand, you know, kind of my
[34:27] Speaker 6: playing situation. It was something that he felt good about,
[34:30] Speaker 6: and so to be able to get him not only
[34:32] Speaker 6: from a leadership standpoint, but just to be able to say, hey,
[34:35] Speaker 6: look can you produce those type of numbers that you
[34:38] Speaker 6: did the year before? And so if he can come
[34:39] Speaker 6: close to that, I think it's a win win situation
[34:42] Speaker 6: for both groups. I mean, because you're going to have
[34:44] Speaker 6: some leadership, so avoid there not having Tomorrio Davis who
[34:48] Speaker 6: was able to go to New York with the Jetsons.
[34:50] Speaker 6: So I know that you signed some other guys to
[34:52] Speaker 6: be able to fill that void. As far as Okay,
[34:54] Speaker 6: nellis is a guy that you know really well over
[34:56] Speaker 6: from Atlanta. He comes back to New Orleans, he tries
[34:59] Speaker 6: to play that role of to Mario, but having Cam
[35:02] Speaker 6: there and just being able to go out there and produce.
[35:04] Speaker 6: I think that that will help that Saints defense, you know,
[35:06] Speaker 6: to be able to play at an elite level, you know,
[35:09] Speaker 6: kind of like they did most of the year last year.
[35:11] Speaker 1: Yeah, especially with Chase hung on that other edge really
[35:14] Speaker 1: coming into his own last season, the big things expected
[35:17] Speaker 1: out of him.
[35:18] Speaker 2: I want to take you to a little bit.
[35:20] Speaker 1: Of your career as it comes back on the twenty
[35:23] Speaker 1: year milestone this year, Week four of Monday Night Football,
[35:26] Speaker 1: the NFL season, twentieth anniversary of that first game back
[35:29] Speaker 1: in the Superdome after Hurricane Katrina, A game you played in,
[35:33] Speaker 1: a game the Saints won.
[35:35] Speaker 2: We know how big of a game that was.
[35:38] Speaker 1: What was it like when you look back twenty years ago,
[35:41] Speaker 1: not only the impact and magnitude of that game itself,
[35:44] Speaker 1: but what it has meant for Saints football.
[35:46] Speaker 2: In that city.
[35:49] Speaker 6: Just thinking about it, you know, it's hard to bath
[35:51] Speaker 6: on that it's been twenty years, you know, when you
[35:52] Speaker 6: think about Hurricane Katrina and being being able to continue
[35:56] Speaker 6: to play in duals. You know that was even in
[35:58] Speaker 6: doubt itself, and you see the block there by Steve Gleason,
[36:02] Speaker 6: and just to be able to have that moment, not
[36:04] Speaker 6: only as a return as a player, but you know,
[36:08] Speaker 6: a team, a city, just to be able to bring
[36:10] Speaker 6: some hope, you know. I think that was probably the
[36:12] Speaker 6: most important thing for us, just because you were vagabonds
[36:15] Speaker 6: the year before, the unknown whether you would return to
[36:18] Speaker 6: New Orleans, whether the city of New Orleans would be
[36:21] Speaker 6: viable you know long term, and you've seen some of
[36:23] Speaker 6: the growth you've seen, you know, not only the organization
[36:25] Speaker 6: be able to step up and be a better team
[36:28] Speaker 6: than it kind of was, you know, or at least
[36:30] Speaker 6: was thought of prior to that time. And so you know,
[36:34] Speaker 6: there's a lot of work that still has to be
[36:36] Speaker 6: done for an organization to be able to get back
[36:39] Speaker 6: to the least status. I think it starts with the quarterback.
[36:42] Speaker 6: I think that you may have that in place now,
[36:44] Speaker 6: you know, you around him so soon, But when you
[36:47] Speaker 6: think about that game, that moment, it meant a lot,
[36:50] Speaker 6: not only to the organization but to the city, to
[36:53] Speaker 6: the region, and just brought a lot of hope, and
[36:55] Speaker 6: you know, the team was able to kind of reward
[36:59] Speaker 6: the city and the safe with the Super Bowl in
[37:01] Speaker 6: two thousand and nine. You know, a couple of years
[37:03] Speaker 6: after treaming talk.
[37:04] Speaker 1: About meaning a lot to the city in the organization,
[37:06] Speaker 1: your quarterback, Drew Brees going to the Pro Football Hall
[37:09] Speaker 1: of Fame at ken Ohio in a couple of weeks.
[37:11] Speaker 1: What can you tell us about Drew to some of
[37:13] Speaker 1: the memories and how deserving he is of this honor.
[37:17] Speaker 6: Well, it's definitely deserving, and you know, just you know,
[37:20] Speaker 6: just a small part that I was able to play
[37:22] Speaker 6: in that picture. You're definitely you're thankful for it. And
[37:26] Speaker 6: so you know, for Drew and his kids, his wife Brittany,
[37:29] Speaker 6: all the things that they meant to this city in
[37:31] Speaker 6: New Orleans and the things that they still mean to
[37:33] Speaker 6: this city and to this organization. You know, you're you're proud,
[37:36] Speaker 6: You're happy for him, you know, because we saw the work.
[37:39] Speaker 6: You know a lot of people, you hear the stories,
[37:40] Speaker 6: you know about some of the things from a preparation standpoint.
[37:44] Speaker 6: You know, you see Drew and you think, man, he's
[37:46] Speaker 6: not that big. You know, he doesn't fit the typical
[37:48] Speaker 6: sixty four you know, two twenty type of quarterback. But
[37:53] Speaker 6: maybe from a physical standpoint, he didn't beat you. He
[37:55] Speaker 6: beat you up top, and so he still had a
[37:57] Speaker 6: strong enough arm. He was still a good enough at
[38:00] Speaker 6: league where he could move into pocket and manipulate it,
[38:02] Speaker 6: be able to see things kind of before they happen,
[38:05] Speaker 6: and just his preparation. And so you know, he's definitely
[38:09] Speaker 6: deserving of the Hall of Fame. And you know, like
[38:11] Speaker 6: I said, just for myself and some of the other
[38:13] Speaker 6: guys that were able to play a small part in
[38:15] Speaker 6: you know, that that time that he had here in
[38:18] Speaker 6: New Orleans. Man, we're so proud of him. You know
[38:20] Speaker 6: who can't wait to celebrate with it?
[38:23] Speaker 1: All right, dude, don't tell yourself short man, you play
[38:25] Speaker 1: a little bit more of a small part.
[38:26] Speaker 2: You were a baller.
[38:27] Speaker 1: People go back and google up for twenty six Duce
[38:29] Speaker 1: mccallis are doing his thing.
[38:30] Speaker 2: Hey, brother, appreciate you taking some time. All the best,
[38:34] Speaker 2: no problem, Thank you so much.
[38:37] Speaker 3: Welcome back to the Insiders. Here is the full list
[38:40] Speaker 3: of first time head coaches to win the Super Bowl.
[38:42] Speaker 3: That's right, there are two of them. Don McCafferty with
[38:45] Speaker 3: the nineteen seventy Baltimore Colts and of course George Seaffert
[38:49] Speaker 3: with the eighty nine San Francisco forty nine ers.
[38:52] Speaker 4: There's a chance we could have a coach to do
[38:54] Speaker 4: that this year.
[38:55] Speaker 3: We're going to talk about that now with Ian Rappaport,
[38:58] Speaker 3: Mark Ross, and Stacy Elsall returning with me.
[39:01] Speaker 4: Judy Batista.
[39:02] Speaker 3: All right, Stacey, I want to start with you, because
[39:04] Speaker 3: Joe Brady takes the helm with the Buffalo Bills. They
[39:07] Speaker 3: have been a Super Bowl contender for the last few years.
[39:10] Speaker 3: Can he get them over the top?
[39:15] Speaker 8: Why can't he right the relationship that he has built
[39:18] Speaker 8: with his quarterback since twenty twenty two when he was
[39:20] Speaker 8: the quarterbacks coach, morphed into the OC and called the
[39:23] Speaker 8: plays there to the tune of the fourth best offense
[39:26] Speaker 8: last year in football. They were number one against the rush.
[39:29] Speaker 8: Josh Allen a huge part of that. Thirty nine total
[39:32] Speaker 8: touchdowns for the quarterback, twenty five through the air, fourteen
[39:35] Speaker 8: on the ground, and then of course James Cook led
[39:39] Speaker 8: the league with over sixteen hundred rushing yards. He was
[39:42] Speaker 8: sensational again, number one rushing attack in football. So Brandon Bean,
[39:46] Speaker 8: this organization brought back Joe Brady through the interview process
[39:50] Speaker 8: because they wanted to keep that continuity. Yes, they have
[39:53] Speaker 8: a new defensive coordinator in Jim Leonard by way of
[39:55] Speaker 8: the Denver Broncos, but maintaining that continuity, that foundation of
[40:00] Speaker 8: thus between the play caller and the quarterback. And the
[40:03] Speaker 8: quarterback is an MVP level quarterback. Why not with the energy.
[40:07] Speaker 8: One of my favorite pregame conversations in the league is
[40:11] Speaker 8: with Joe Brady when I have one of their games.
[40:13] Speaker 8: He's innovative, the players love him, and we'll see what
[40:16] Speaker 8: happens on the defensive side of the ball. As you
[40:18] Speaker 8: guys know, it's going to come down to clock management,
[40:20] Speaker 8: fourth down for brady teams, situations, situational football, those will
[40:25] Speaker 8: be the areas we'll see how he impacts as the
[40:27] Speaker 8: head coach.
[40:29] Speaker 5: Yeah, Joe Brady can get this team a couple plays better,
[40:32] Speaker 5: one or two plays better, No doubt. He can become
[40:36] Speaker 5: a rare, rare for year head coach to go deep
[40:39] Speaker 5: into the playoffs, and we will see obviously plenty talented
[40:43] Speaker 5: and off our mark. What about Jesse Mintter with the
[40:46] Speaker 5: Baltimore Ravens.
[40:47] Speaker 2: Take me through that one. Well, so eerily similar.
[40:51] Speaker 11: I mean, these situations are almost the same with Jesse
[40:54] Speaker 11: Mintzer there and Joe Brady where you've got the franchise quarterback.
[40:57] Speaker 11: You've been on the doorstep of being the best team
[41:00] Speaker 11: in the league making it to the super Bowl. Joe
[41:03] Speaker 11: Brady's the offensive side of the ball, but jesse Minter
[41:06] Speaker 11: is on the defensive side, and he has to entrust
[41:09] Speaker 11: a new young offensive coordinator there in Decklan Doyle to
[41:12] Speaker 11: take Lamar Jackson's game to another level, you know. And
[41:16] Speaker 11: for jesse Minner, we saw the Baltimore defense struggle last season,
[41:19] Speaker 11: you know, his charges to get those guys right, with
[41:22] Speaker 11: Trey Henkerson and Kalaias Campbell, Jalen Hawkins coming in there,
[41:25] Speaker 11: Zion Young.
[41:26] Speaker 2: The rookie there in the second round. So so similar.
[41:29] Speaker 11: I can't imagine in history there's been two coaches that
[41:31] Speaker 11: got put into better situations at the same time than
[41:33] Speaker 11: these two guys.
[41:34] Speaker 3: Judy, you know, the AFC felt so wide open last year.
[41:40] Speaker 3: No Burrough, no Lamar, no Mahomes in the playoffs, Josh
[41:43] Speaker 3: Allen out early. That set of circumstances is probably not
[41:47] Speaker 3: going to repeat itself. Let's hope it doesn't repeat itself.
[41:49] Speaker 3: Going to be really interesting to see if Joe Brady
[41:52] Speaker 3: and Jesse Mentor can break through that very crowded field.
[41:56] Speaker 4: Guys, thank you very much.
[41:58] Speaker 1: It's gonna be a hood a part in Cincinnati on
[42:01] Speaker 1: New Year's Eve against the Ravens.
[42:04] Speaker 2: As the Bengals are having a white stripe.
[42:07] Speaker 1: Out, so to speak, as they're asking fans in certain
[42:10] Speaker 1: sections to wear white tops, others wear black tops so
[42:12] Speaker 1: it can resemble the Bengal tiger stripes.
[42:16] Speaker 2: Can be a really cool event. Hey, how'd they get
[42:19] Speaker 2: my workout video from this morning?
[42:21] Speaker 1: I mean, oh wait, wait, that's trips in wherfs of
[42:24] Speaker 1: the Tampa Bay Buccaneers just ripping up about oh I'm
[42:27] Speaker 1: guessing about four hundred.
[42:29] Speaker 2: That is an awful lot. And teams reporting to camp tomorrow.
[42:32] Speaker 2: You see them right there.
[42:33] Speaker 1: The Patriots, the Dolphins, the Panthers, the Bills, the Texans,
[42:38] Speaker 1: all their rookies will.
[42:39] Speaker 2: Be showing up. You know, we'll also be showing up tomorrow.
[42:42] Speaker 2: Right here, we will be showing up on the Insiders.
[42:45] Speaker 1: I am Steve White and also signing off for Jumiy Batista,
[42:48] Speaker 1: Ian Rappaport, Stacy Deals and Mark Ross for the Insiders.
[42:52] Speaker 2: Thanks a ton, have a good night. We'll see you
[42:54] Speaker 2: on Tuesday.
[43:12] Speaker 7: Before
