When you were a child you lived in bursts of remarkable imaginativeness. Your eyes sparkled and clouds looked like lions. You wished to be an astronaut and a superhero. I pray you get that gleam back. Robots don’t have it. I'm truly super excited over the upcoming release of my new book The Robot and the Gardener: Being Fully Human in an Artificial Age (Penguin Random House). It's a parable and it's different (by far!) from any book I've ever written. You can join the list here if you'd like to be among the first to receive any updates. I wanted to just sort of off the cuff, share some of the lessons I've learned over all these
years on our tiny planet, and there's no script here. I'm just going to speak whatever
seems most truthful in whatever feels most helpful to you. And the first thing I'd say is,
remember your magic. When we were little kids, we knew our magic and we would pay
ten. We would sing and we would dance, and we would write or scribble. And as we
navigate a human life with its wings and with its sorrows, we, we forget the magic. And I
think this is a great time of year for you to go for a long walk alone. Maybe in the woods
or in the mountains. Maybe in the desert. Leave your devices at home and just bring
yourself and ask yourself, what do you want this year to stand for? What do you want
your good name to stand for? What do you want your life to stand for? It sounds simple,
but your values are the things you value. And do you live your values or do you live the
crowd's values? Second thing I would say it's most important, which is remember that
you can have wonderful ethical ambitions, but action also has magic. And when you take
magic around, the things you believe are most important. Universe does encourage you
and support you and bring synchronicity into your life. So do your best and then let life to
the rest. But we have a part and that's April. Absolute personal responsibility. We need to
show up. We need to do the work. Maybe even get up early like at 5 a.m. and then let go
and trust whatever happens is for your best. Third thing I would say life has taught me is
wonder is everywhere, wonders everywhere. Once you continue to develop the eyes to
see it. And so don't be so busy on your device. And don't be so busy working. And don't
be so busy striving that you don't see the wonder that's more priceless than all the gold in
the world. And this is a habit. The more you practice being what I call a great notice, or
the more you're going to notice wonder everywhere. And wouldn't that be great?
Everywhere you go, whether it's in a grocery store or a forest, whether it's in a cubicle or
on the street where everyone else is looking down at the ground, you're seeing the stars.
Fourth thing I'd say what makes me think of what Rumi said break your heart over and
over until it opens up. And so we all suffer pain and you have a choice. Are you going to
let the pain close you, or will you allow it to purify you? Fifth thing I'd say fitness is the
game changer. We all know it, but I was journaling very early this morning in the dark,
and I was just deconstructing how beautiful and powerful fitness is. It allows you to sleep
better, it allows you to live longer. It allows you to be more productive, which grows
your income as well as your impact. When you're as fit as you possibly can be, you'll
have more energy. Your moods will be elevated, which increases your positivity, which
in turn cascades into your creativity. So this year, get fit. Start walking. Hire a trainer, go
to a yoga class, do burpees on the floor. Do push ups while your coffee is being made.
Move move move move. My dad once shared the term with me be a perpetual motion
machine. Sixth idea. All labor has dignity and work is your chance to build intimacy with
your talents. Work is not just work. Work is a chance for you to discover how strong you
are and how brilliant you are, and to go to the jagged edges of your limits so your limits
expand. Yes, to hard and dangerous work. The work that you know you must do to bring
your light to the world. Life is really short, and before you know it, you'll be old. Or
maybe not even old. I'm not trying to be morbid. I'm trying to be inspiring. But the
Longest life really is a short ride. And so do beautiful work. And don't hold back your
love and go see or even make beautiful art and remember what's most important.
